PRIME MINISTER SANCHEZ has outlined the measures involved in Spain’s de-escalation phase, this entire process has been divided into four separate phases and will last at least a month and a half. This plan will be gradual and moving to the next phase is dependent on the progress of the coronavirus epidemic. To keep control of the virus’s rate of infection each phase lasts a minimum of two weeks, as this is how long it takes to incubate the coronavirus. The de-escalation phases will be applied asymmetrically amongst autonomous communities, however they will all be coordinated by the same central government rules. We currently find ourselves in Phase 0, the preparation stage, which has included some relief measures such as the recent change allowing children out for walks. This will also allow some businesses that operate by appointment to begin to offer services from Mon-
INTERNATIONAL WORKERS’ DAY is celebrated across the world on May 1 and therefore is more commonly known as May Day. The event was first acknowledged in the 19th century, with the labour movements and trade union growing, several days were selected by the trade unionists as a day for celebrating labour. May 1 was chosen to be International Workers’ Day to commemorate the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago when there was a general strike for the eight-hour workday. The strike turned into riots that led to the deaths of workers and policemen and the execution of four labour leaders. New normality THE plan for the transition to the new normality that the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, has presented this Tuesday, contemplates a deescalation of confinement and an economic revival with a different pace in each province, depending on the health and epidemiological situation. Although the Executive has not set specific dates for each phase, it has advanced that the intention is to extend it at most until the end of June, just before the strong summer season begins. Although no specific dates have been set, there is an approximate calendar. The four phases of the transition to the new normal plan will run until the end of June. A minimum period of two weeks will pass between each phase, which will be extended if the markers indicate so. On May 4, all the territories will enter Phase 0 except the Balearics and Canaries, which will enter Phase 1.

Preparing for face-to-face attention RINCON DE LA VICTORIA Town Hall is working on ways that will allow personnel to return to work in safety. “We intend to guarantee the safety of both employees and the pub-
lic,” said Human Resources councillor Josefa Carnero. Protection measures will be applied to all municipal buildings, while complying with official procedures and proto-
cols set out by the health authorities, Carnero announced. The town hall is going to “enormous” lengths to avoid Covid-19 risks, said Rincon de la Victoria mayor Francisco Salado, once lockdown regulations are relaxed and staff can return to their posts. This includes making provision for flexible working hours and shifts, Salado revealed. Even before the State of Alarm announcement the town hall had introduced these measures to protect employees while still providing a service to the public with teleworking, he pointed out. A Citizens’ Attention Service (SAC) will be located at the entrance to the town hall building to inform and assist the public. Where necessary, requests can be processed without having to go from one department to another, Carnero said.

ROAD CHECKS: Have increased in recent weeks. POLICE are stepping up checks on Almuñecar and La Herradura traffic over the May 1 long weekend. They will be controlling all accesses to both areas, including the motorway and the N-340 main road, together with Carretera de Suspiro and Carretera de La Cabra, announced Almuñecar mayor, Trinidad Herrera Lorente. “We are doing this to prevent unnecessary journeys, especially those to second homes during the Covid-19 State of
Alarm,” she warned. The additional vigilance begins today, Thursday April 30, and continues until this coming Sunday, May 3, with “exhaustive controls,” Herrera said. “Checks have increased on these roads in recent weeks but although few people were trying to reach second residences, we cannot let our guard down and must continue checking traffic on Almuñecar and La Herradura roads,” the mayor declared.

Drugs missing Boys and girls come out to play from narco-launch LAST Sunday, as children descended on Nerja’s Burriana beach, an empty dinghy was found abandoned at the water’s edge. One of the ultra-rapid inflatables that are known as ‘narco-launches’ and are equipped with powerful outboard motors, the boat was empty although Guardia Civil sources revealed that it was big enough to have brought more than 2,000 kilos of cannabis from Morocco.
Early birds amongst parents taking children to the beach for the first time since lockdown began six weeks earlier, later commented on the social media that they were able to watch as a tractor hauled the boat to the promenade where it was loaded onto a waiting tow-truck. Despite the absence of the drugs, the Guardia Civil have now arrested one person of Moroccan nationality in connection with the find.

AFTER six weeks indoors, Axarquia children could once more go outside without breaking the law on April 26. Spain’s under-14’s were the first to benefit as the national government took tentative steps towards relaxing some of the State of Alarm measures halting the spread of the Covid19 pandemic. Axarquia town halls removed barriers to the beaches so that children living within a one-kilometre radius could play on
the sand once more. Their newly-restored freedom to walk in the open air once more was not entirely unrestricted, however. Climbing frames and play areas on beaches were still vetoed and festooned with police tape while paddling, let alone swimming, must wait. “You simply don’t realise how much you have until something like this happens,” one Nerja mother told the local Spanish media as she enjoyed Nerja’s Burriana beach.
Those living too far from the beach were out with skateboards, scooters and bikes although, perhaps hardest of all for the children both on beaches and town centre streets was the obligation to keep away from other children, even when they saw their best friends in the distance. To make up for this, Local Police officers handed out diplomas in Rincon de la Victoria, praising them for their exemplary behaviour during quarantine.

FORTY-ONE Alcaucin residents are cooperating in a wide-ranging study to estimate the extension of Covid-19 in Spain. The national government is carrying out a nationwide survey to establish the Spanish population’s degree of immunity to the coronavirus while at the same time monitoring the evolution of the contagion. The 41 Alcaucin residents, who were selected at random by Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE), will be visited in their homes to give blood samples. These can then be analysed to estimate precisely the frequency of past and present contagion at provincial level, providing the national government with information reALMUÑECAR’S fire brigade took to the streets on Sunday evening, thanking residents for their solidarity and good conduct during lockdown. “We have received so many demonstrations of solidarity from members of the public and local business that we wanted to say thank you,” said Almuñecar’s fire chief Jose Luis Varela. LA VIÑUELA: Levels restored thanks to heavy rain and lower consumption. RESTRICTIONS on Axarquia’s irrigation water have now been lifted. As agricultural growers had hoped, this month’s rainfall of 78.6 millilitres restored levels at the La Viñuela reservoir on which they depend. With an additional 11 cubic hectometres entering the dam since the end of March, capacity has now reached 65.7 cubic hectometres. At the start of the last hydrological year which began on October 1, growers learnt that
the Junta’s Agriculture department was cutting their irrigation water, owing to the drought. Now the department has announced that the reduction has been cancelled, and the growers are to receive the same amount that they received in the previous 2018-2019 water year. The Demarcacion Hidrografica de las Cuencas Mediterraneas (DHCM), which controls the region’s reservoirs and waterways, announced that it will release 21.7 cubic hectometres be-
tween October and September. Reservoir levels are so improved that the La Concepcion dam has had to release two cubic hectometres to maintain its safety levels. Although much-needed rainfall in the Rio Verde basin has improved the situation, reservoir levels are unusually high at present owing to the Covid-19 virus. With hotels, bars and restaurants closed, the Costa del Sol is using far less water than usual, easing the usual pressure on the area’s reservoirs.

Nasty injury ONE person was seriously injured and four people arrested during a fight between Romanians in Almuñecar’s Plaza Doctor Alvarez. The investigation remains open although police believe that the group, who were from from Salobreña and Motril, appear to have travelled to Almuñecar for a possible settling of accounts. At around 9.30pm, members of the public alerted the police after an argument between a group of men deteriorated into a brawl. On arriving at Plaza Doctor Alvarez, the Local Police found that one of the men had been wounded in the back with pruning shears. Initially taken by ambulance to Motril hospital, he was later transferred to Granada City. The remaining men were arrested although one was released and another, who managed to escape, later handed himself in to the Guardia Civil in Sabobreña. All were taken to the Almuñecar Guardia Civil station before appearing in court.
It’s raining frying pans A 60-YEAR-OLD Nerja man was taken into custody for hurling assorted objects from his fifth-floor apartment to the street below. Pieces of furniture, beer cans, a frying pan filled with oil and glasses crashed to the ground prompting the Local Police and the Guardia Civil to call twice at his home in Nerja’s Calle Antonio Ferrandis Chanquete. The man, who has an extensive police record, reacted “aggressively and
defiantly” on both occasions, according to the local Spanish media. He resisted arrest, grappling with several officers when he was finally detained and charged with causing a public disturbance and failing to obey authority. Through traffic was briefly halted, only a parked moped was damaged by the rain of household items as the street was empty of people owing to lockdown.

BEACHES TENDER: Contractor’s boats will clean surface waters throughout the day. AS summer approaches Rincon de la Victoria has reactivated the tender to clean the surface waters along its coastline. The contract will require boats to locate and remove floating and semi-submerged rubbish, litter, plastics, dead fish and jellyfish. The contractor’s boats will also be expected to skim off and deal with sea foam, said the town hall’s Environment coun-
cillor Sergio Diaz. This service will be carried out from June 15 until September 15, from Monday to Sunday between 10am and 6pm, from the La Cala del Moral beaches as far as Los Rubios. “Cleaning the water is essential for the efficient running of the beaches as well as the health and safety of swimmers, especially in the present circumstances,” said the town hall’s Environment
councillor Sergio Diaz. Rincon de la Victoria’s mayor Francisco Salado stressed the local administration’s efforts to return to nor mal by setting in motion basic services like cleaning the seashore. Like Dias, Salada pointed out that the country was living through exceptional times: “We have to prepare for the coming months by ensuring that everything is functioning correctly.”
MORE than 100 Almuñecar children are receiving material to help them continue their lessons while they are quarantined. “We are delivering them in stages to the pupils whom the Granada’s Schools Inspection Service considers need help to enable them to study at home,” said Almuñecar’s Education councillor Alberto

schools in Almuñecar or La Herradura, the councillor said, and thanks to this initiative families now know that pupils can study as normal. He was grateful, Gilabert said, to the schools’ headteachers and for the efficiency and willingness of the Proteccion Civil members: “As ever, they are always ready to collaborate.”
No more stairs VELEZ-MALAGA Town Hall recently gave the go-ahead to install an exterior lift in Calle Princesa in Torre del Mar. “In 2018 we modified bylaws to allow outside lifts, which until then were not permitted in public areas,” explained Velez-Malaga mayor Antonio Moreno Ferrer.
“We are responding to a longstanding request from residents as we did in the case of the San Valentin apartment blocks in Torre del Mar,” Moreno Ferrer said. “This means that residents who, because of their age or through mobility problems, can now have an improved quality of life.”

Twenty-two years under false colours A FOREIGN resident, aged 53, was arrested in Torrox after a police officer noticed flaws in his identity papers. He was stopped during a routine lockdown check on drivers but unluckily for him, Angel Lopez, the Local Police officer who examined his ID, is an expert in forged documentation. The man in question, who has lived in Spain for 22 years, presented an authentic SAS health card and state-issued foreign resident’s identity document but Officer Lopez noticed imperfections in his Lithuanian passport. Further investigation revealed that he was in fact Latvian and he admitted to the police that he had been arrested some 30 times in Latvia, but later changed his identity and way of life. Since then he has written three autobiographical books and told the police investigators that he would add a postscript to the third, mentioning Officer Lopez’s expertise in detecting forgeries. He was later released with charges, and police sources revealed that possibly the charges against him in Latvia have expired. There were no charges against him under his false identity, whilst in Spain he can only be accused of using a forged ID.
Courts back kindergarten dismissal appeals FIVE out of 73 former employees at Costa del Sol kindergartens who launched unfair dismissal proceedings are from Torrox. All were sacked on September 1 last year when the regional government’s Education took direct control of the kindergartens whose running was formerly outsourced to contractors. Some of the 73 have started court cases against the Junta, and a Malaga court recently admitted an appeal by an employee of the El Faro nursery school in Torrox, ruling that she was wrongfully dismissed because the Junta made no attempt to re-employ her. The Education department has been ordered to readmit her on the same terms as before, reimbursing her lost earnings since last September or paying her off with €14,651 compensation. Another employee at the same school who was not on a permanent contract must also be readmitted or receive €10,626 another Malaga court ruled. Meanwhile, this opens the door to further unfair dismissals and more orders to readmit the workers or pay compensation, sources close to the case revealed.

A WOMAN was found stabbed to death at her home in Madrid at the weekend and police have arrested her son in connection with her murder. Ryanair Rapped HOME WITH FAMILY: Chloe, 22 months old, has had a successful heart transplant during pandemic. A TODDLER returned home with a healthy new heart last week. Chloe, 22 months old, was admitted to the Gregorio Marañón Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on December 9, before coronavirus had consumed hospital resources, and now, months later she is back with her family in the town of Pinto. Chloe’s heart transplant is one of 65 organ transplants performed in hospitals in the Community of Madrid since the State of Alarm was declared.
From a ward at the Gregorio Marañón ICU, where Chloe has been since December, her mother told El Mundo she had seen first hand how the coronavirus evolved ‘practically overnight.’ Aside from complications from the transplant itself, she admitted she feared the virus ‘very much’ adding: “We’ve been through a lot of fear. When the new heart arrived from Barcelona, they tested it... otherwise it wouldn’t have been possible.”

THREE PHASES: Focus on security and prevention measures. CORREOS has presented its plan for de-escalation and return to normal activity. This strategy is based primarily on scrupulous compliance with security and prevention measures and on guaranteeing the provision of sufficient protective material for all staff, according to the public company. Correos’ return to normality plan contemplates three phases. The first involves expanding customer service from 9.30am to 12.30pm to 8.30am to 2.30pm. The second phase will mean that the main offices will extend their hours to the usual morning and afternoon hours, that is, from Monday to Friday from 8.00am to
9.00pm, with customer service from 8.30am to 2.30pm and 3.30pm to 8.30pm, and the possibility of also opening on a Saturday. In the third phase, the network of offices will already be governed with their usual hours, always guaranteeing all the security measures and protocols implemented. The post company indicates that this plan is “under constant review, its implementation will depend on the evolution of the pandemic, the indications and protocols of the health authorities, and the evolution of the company’s operations and activities.”
AIR carrier Ryanair has been ordered to reverse a series of redundancies by the High Court in Madrid. The company were told to reinstate 224 workers collectively dismissed from four bases in the country. The High Court said the reasons given by the airline for the closures were not good enough. WHILE Spain’s coronavirus crisis lockdown has kept people indoors and traffic off the roads, wildlife has been venturing out of its usual habitat and into the country’s towns and cities. In one of the latest examples, Catalan police found a snake wrapped round a moped in in the Sant Marti district of Barcelona.
A DAD, who dumped his young son on the hard shoulder, has been arrested after weeks of trying to locate him. The man was driving along the A-44 in Granada on March 19 when he came across a routine State of Alarm police check. But rather than stopping,

Dad caught Surprise find he sped off in a ‘reckless and dangerous manner,’ forcing a traffic officer to move out of the way to avoid being run over. Police jumped into a patrol car and chased the
suspect, who reportedly stopped briefly on the hard shoulder to let a child out, and made off at ‘a crazy speed.’ This bought him a little time as officers immediately went to the aid of the child, left alone on the motorway, while the father pulled off in the direction of the town of Peligros. The Traffic Offences Investigation Group of the Granada Guardia Civil managed to identify the suspect and his address, returning his son to the family home. But they were then forced to spend weeks watching the man’s house every day until he returned and they were able to arrest him. The man has been reported for ‘abandonment of his minor child’ to the Granada Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office.
A SUPERMARKET shopper in Avila got a huge surprise on Monday when they found an abandoned newborn baby in a trolley. The baby boy, which is no more than a couple of days old, had been wrapped up in a sheet and placed inside a shopping bag, then left in a trolley in the supermarket car-park. A woman overheard the little one’s cries and alerted the staff, who in turn called the emergency services. The baby has now been checked out by paediatricians at a local hospital and National Police posted on Twitter that the baby is in good health. Also, that they have opened an investigation to get to the bottom of the matter.
Domestic Violence THE Minister of Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska assures that Spain has intensified prevention and protection actions for potential victims of domestic violence during lockdown. Since the beginning of the State of Alarm police forces have arrested 4,142 people accused of gender-based violence. Furthermore, calls concerning domestic violence to the emergency number, 061, have almost doubled in the month of April. “We have not lowered our intensity in the fight against gendered violence,” claimed Marlaska as he clarified that officers had already processed 153,730 cases of all kinds and arrested 4,142 individuals for domestic abuse. Marlaska has also highlighted the reinforcement and success of the Alertcops mobile application which allows victims to communicate and send alerts to the police when they are in danger.
Conning health workers out of cash A FRAUDSTER who passed himself off as a doctor to con cash out of medical staff at a Madrid hospital is under arrest. Officers intercepted the suspect during a police control. At the time he was carrying a medical uniform and an ID card in the name of a supposed immunology service specialist at the hospital in the national capital. Investigations revealed he had
been seen on several occasions at the hospital and had allegedly tried to collect money from health workers, which he said was to buy personal protection materials. Investigators also discovered he has a record for scams. It emerged that on this occasion he had been operating with another young man, who also pretended to be a doctor, and who police said they have still not identified.

EX-FOOTBALL player and sports commentator Michael Robinson, who revolutionised the way of analysing football in Spain during the 1990s with his live broadcasts, died on Tuesday April 28 at his home in Marbella. Since being diagnosed with myeloma in the autumn of 2018, Michael Robinson wanted to make use of his own best therapy to fight the disease: his sense of humour. However, when giving his last interview in quarantine, his humour had disappeared: “I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but they have not given me hope,” he said a few days before he died. BUDGET airline easyJet is facing a warning that it could go bust, as flights to Spain remain grounded. As the budget carrier has no services to offer, the focus for easyJet has switched to a massive battle to oust the company’s chairman John Barton and chief executive Johan Lundgren. The shareholder move is being spearheaded by easyJet founder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou over the company ordering a new fleet of aircraft from Airbus. The cost of the order is £4.5 billion, and Haji-Ioannou claims that it will bankrupt
easyJet, especially with what’s happening over the coronavirus crisis. He’s the largest shareholder in the company and the showdown vote will take place at a meeting on May 22. Sir Stelios described the current easyJet bosses as “scoundrels.” Not surprisingly, the company wants shareholders to vote against his resolution, and they said that any changes would be damaging. John Barton said: “This is not in the best interests of the company or its shareholders as a whole.”

THE coronavirus pandemic has altered many normal occurrences in our reality, now migrants are trying to flee from a Covid-ridden Spain back to their home countries. Returning home in the midst of a global pandemic has become an almost impossible mission which is fueling human trafficking networks. For example, at the end of March, a group of about 100 Moroccans embarked on two inflatable boats to return illegally to their country and bypass the restrictions decreed to stop the virus from spreading both in Spain and in Morocco. Each passenger paid around €5,400 for the trip, which ended on a beach in Larache, in northwestern Morocco. According to police sources, the price of a place on a boat from the Moroccan coast to Spain, that is, the opposite route, ranges between €400 and €1,000. An internal report of the European Commission illustrates the flexibility of the mafias: “Migrant smugglers show extreme flexibility and adaptability of their criminal businesses, and are now also organising irregular trips of Moroccan migrants fleeing from the Covid-19 in the opposite direction, that is, from Spain to Morocco,” the document cites. The closure of Morocco’s borders on March 13, has not allowed the return of its nationals, despite the efforts of the Spanish Foreign Ministry, which has left hundreds of Moroccans stranded far from their homes and their families.

Among the group officers found camping out at the premises in the San Blas district of the city were two babies less than a year old. When officers went in they found Spaniards, Bangladeshis, Colombians, Filipinos, Peruvians, Portuguese, Venezuelans and Hondurans living in tiny areas not fit for human habitation. The business owner was trying to make up for being forced to close by making a buck out of
people with few financial resources. The victims were made to pay some €400 a month for an area no more than a metre and half long. If they couldn’t come up with the money they were denied access to basic services and made to sleep in even smaller spaces, like the toilet or a freezer chamber. There were even threats to infect them with coronavirus, police said. The owner claimed he was a Covid-19 carrier and coughed and sneezed over the plates and other items if he found them eating. Both the restaurant boss and the owner of the property, who police said was aware of what was going on, are under arrest. They face charges for abetting irregular im-
migration, coercion and crimes against public health. Police also said the in-
vestigation remains open and have not ruled out there being others involved.

Colour change TWO doctors in China have woken after battling coronavirus to find that their skin has changed colour. Dr Yi Fan and Dr Hu Weifeng, both 42, were infected with Covid-19 while treating patients at the Wuhan Central Hospital in January. Doctors treating them said they both needed to be put on life support, but as a result of treatment to bring them back from near death their skin turned dark Chinese media reports that the skin colour change was caused by a hormonal imbalance that took place, as the doctors’ livers were damaged by the virus. Dr Li Shusheng - who is treating both health workers - said the two doctors’ skin turned dark due to a

type of medicine they were given during the early stages of their treatment. He added that one of the drug’s side effects is the darkening of skin colour.
Although he did not identify the drug, Dr Li said both doctors’ skin colour is expected to return to normal once their livers start functioning properly.
Wolves spotted WHILE the nation is confined to their homes since State of Alarm was declared, wild animals are making the most of t h e f re e d o m a s o n e resident found out when she saw two wolves strolling down the street of a village in Galicia.

According to La Voz de Galicia, these animals usually roam the area between the municipalities of Trabada, Barreiros and Ribadeo, as well as Lourenza. The resident who photographed the two wolves contacted the Guardia Civil, which together with other au-
thorities, will try to locate them. They have reminded the public that these are wild animals who, among others, are venturing into more ur-
ban areas as there are ‘fewer humans to flee from.’ They add that ‘caution is recommended’ should anybody come across them.
THE actor and Bollywood icon Irrfan Khan has died at the age of 53. Khan had been admitted to a hospital in Mumbai on Tuesday April 28 after suffering a kidney infection. Following a period of deteriorating health, he died Wednesday April 29 Khan previously announced in 2018 that he had been diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour. Over the years, he crossed over into Hollywood and earned roles in Slumdog Millionaire, also starring Dev Patel and Frieda Pinto, Jurassic World alongside Chris Pratt, The Life of Pi, The Amazing Spider-Man
and The Darjeeling Limited. In a statement, a spokesperson said: “‘I trust, I have surrendered’; These were some of the many words that Irr fan expressed in a heartfelt note he wrote in 2018 opening up about his fight with cancer. And a man of few words and an actor of silent expressions with his deep eyes and his memorable actions on screen. “It’s saddening that this day, we have to bring forward the news of him passing away. Irr fan was a strong soul, someone who fought till the very end and always inspired everyone who came close to him."
Olympics unsure THE Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games will be difficult to hold in summer 2021 without a vaccine against coronavirus, the head of Japan’s medical association has warned. “My opinion is that it will be hard to host them unless an effective vaccine is developed,” Yoshitake Yokokura, said at an online press briefing on Tuesday. “I am not saying that Japan should or shouldn’t host the Olympics,” he commented, but made the point that even if coronanvirus is under control in the host nation by 2021, “it will still be difficult to hold the games unless the pandemic is over in the rest of the world.” Yokokura urged developers to “step up the pace in (producing) treatments and vaccine.” But he did not specify whether the association would oppose hosting the games if there is still no vaccine. Tokyo 2020 was postponed in March due to the Covid-19 pandemic and as it stands is scheduled to get underway in July next year. In an interview with Nikkan Sports head of the Tokyo Olympics organising committee Yoshiro Mori said the
2020 OLYMPICS: May not even go ahead in 2021. Games in the Japanese capital could not be further postponed and would be “scrapped” if they cannot take place in 2021. But he also made it clear the organisers are working towards staging the event as currently planned.

It told shareholders only that it was ineligible but declined to explain why, although it also advised that it has settled a €674 million dispute with the Belgian tax authority appar ently making a modest payment on ly. A SPANISH nonexecutive director of the Bank of East Asia (BEA), Isidro Fainé Casas, has resigned from his position due to the coronavirus pan demic and the distance between Spain and Hong Kong. The validity of Spanish YOU AND THE driving permits LAW IN SPAIN that expire during the State of Alarm has been extended through the State of Alarm and for 60 days after the lockdown ends. This means that, if the lockdown is extended into May or even until June, you will have 60 days from the end of the period to renew your driving licence. This comes as part of a relief package passed by the government that includes extension for vehicle inspections, visas for for eigners, mortgage extensions and foreclosures, rental contracts, and many other administrative deadlines. Even so, it is wise to check on these measures regularly because they are modified from time to time.

BUSINESS EXTRA UK bailout TATA STEEL which employs 12,000 people in the UK has appealed for a £500 million (€575 million) bailout from the British government so that it can stay in business. The matter is under consideration by the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Zoe Parsons AS a strong, business owner, how have you got through the health crisis? “As a Counsellor who helps people who have experienced narcissist or domestic abuse, unfortunately, the need for my services has increased. Therefore, I have made myself more available to help people, and provide resources where they can go to get help.” When isolation is over what do you plan to do? “As a survivor of domestic violence, I know how important it is to not feel alone when you have experienced abuse, so I will continue to provide that safe emotional place for anyone who needs it.”
“PERHAPS it’s fortunate that I have an inbuilt preservation reserve, having spent three years in a hospital cot and learning to walk again aged seven,” muses PAWS-PATAS animal charity PR and fundraising coordinator Chrissie Cremore on why she’s doing alright under the health crisis restrictions. “Keep positive with a sense of humour,” is Chrissie’s lockdown survival tip.

We’ve created a restaurant WhatsApp group for our staff, which is great... all offering support to each other, helping through bad days and having lots of giggles.
HOLLIE NEWELL moved to Turre when she was just 18 and qualified as a Zumba teacher a year later. Hollie, who has a dance and fitness background, points out that “our bodies aren’t on lockdown, so we can still keep ourselves fit during quarantine. “It’s hard not having a normal everyday routine,” Hollie admits, “but some way we have to make the most of it. “Always try to find the positive in every-
thing.” Thanks to social media Hollie is able to share her love of movement and exercise with others. “I have been recording Zumba videos for people to work out at home whenever they like: no obligations, nice, casual and fun. “The aim is to keep the body and mind working while we are not allowed out.”
Kelly Jordan, Teacher AS a strong woman living in Spain how have you been wearing your crown during the crisis? “I haven’t really stopped, I am a teacher in an English school so have been doing online classes for my students as this crisis can’t allow them to get behind. I also have an Instagram food page so have
been making new creations with the limited fresh produce I can find.” What are you looking forward to after the lockdown is lifted? “When I get out of lockdown I want to make a meal for my friends with all the new recipes I have tried and am looking forward to seeing the school kids.”

MARIA WILSON is a passionate fundraiser for local cancer charities through her group Maria and the Pink Ladies. As a cancer survivor herself, Maria has been in the vanguard to get people to take up early cancer screening tests, which is also promoted through her involvement in the AACC charity based in Playa Flamenca. Maria says on Facebook: “One thing this whole Covid-19 situation has taught me is that we have one life to live. This is not a practice run for the future, this is it! The material things we invest in, are left behind only to be discarded.” She added that she’s enjoying spending more time with her husband Carl, as their busy commitments meant that going on holiday was the best way to fully concentrate on each other.

IN a battle to save his presidency this November, Trump is busy scapegoating the World Health Organisation to mask his own deadly inaction in the USA. Similarly, in an attempt to perk up the flagging economy, he’s accused by US governors of making “delusional” and “dangerous” statements to roll-back safe, stay-at-home restrictions without a robust and widespread system of testing in place. How to make an election drama out of a crisis: Trump has never met a crisis he couldn’t turn into a campaign opportunity. His thin skin, his constant personal attacks, his ability to drive divisions between people and promote infighting to deflect criticism from himself, his willingness to blame others for his failures, but to take credit for their achievements... are all typical exam-
ples of Trumpism. His playground tactic of redirecting accusations of misconduct back at his accuser is especially childish, petty… and surprisingly effective. You’d think pseudo-reality shows such as ‘The Apprentice’ were unscripted, but I’m beginning to wonder. Given The Donald’s less than masterly way with words, how could he ever have got the job? Why was everyone taken in by it all? His signature policy was he’d build ‘The Wall’ and Mexico would pay for it. Right! He’s all hat and no cattle, as they say in Texas. Twenty-three years after it last aired, ‘Spitting Image’ is reportedly set to return to television screens - featuring an S&M-clad Vladimir Putin, Zuckerberg (regrettably, not S&M-clad!) and Trump whose tweets are composed by his, err, rear. I was wistfully thinking that these times are made for ‘Spitting Image.’ Some countries seem ruled by puppets, and most look like they’ve spent a while mouldering away in a storage unit. I happily await the opportunity to be offended and entertained whilst the pompous and powerful at least give us all a good laugh in these chal-

SUZANNE MANNERS IT has always struck me as bizarre that close friends, once online, mutate into something altogether malign, in some cases downright psychotic. Mild mannered professionals become snarling trolls. Intelligent academics become mumbling spores of mediocrity on the click of a key. It’s as if a personality change has taken place and the witty freewheeling friend you know so well becomes an aficionado of fake news and the purveyor fascisistic utterances racist invective and in some cases devil worship (or is that just my family?). The person who you gladly spend an evening with shooting the breeze and sharing a glass or two, online becomes a person you would rather just shoot. I call this phenomena the Facebook Paradox. In truth we all have an alternate online persona, in some cases radically different from the one we present to the physical world. It is one of the temptations in joining social media, the ability to reinvent oneself or in the case of some to crow smugly about your partner, child and working day without having to fact check or temper a prideful demeanour. You know the sort I mean, those who constantly post inane challenges such as ‘Share a picture of your husband/dog/child/gynaecologist. Copy and paste. I bet 90 per cent of you will not click like

But I digress. When Friends Reunited first became available... we Boomers began obsessively checking on the lives of old school friends... rejoicing in the popular girl gone to fat and the floppy haired Simon Le Bon double gone to Prison. Hoping against hope that their lives were not better than our own. Enter Facebook... the opportunity to reinvent, readjust and resent. Post those wonderful photos of far flung holidays with far flung abandon. Look closely you will see the beaming smile is actually a grimace because the holiday was a bloody nightmare. I myself love a bit of Facebook. I have an aversion to the telephone, so for me it is a fabulous way to keep in touch with people... but beware the drunken Facebook post!
Remember this is how future employers reference potential employees and whatever you post remains forever in the ether like a bad smell… or plastic bags on a landfill. So no selfies of your boobs or photos snogging the Woodwork teacher behind the bins at the staff party. These past few weeks schools in Spain have been closed and we teachers have been giving lessons online... not an easy task when your subject is Art but it has been interesting to say the least. I have the most wonder ful sixth form students who all decided to confront me one morning with a variety of soft toys and objects positioned in front of their cameras instead of themselves. It was the most I have laughed in a long while and a good example of the good that the internet can do. Imagine how empty our lives would have been these past weeks without that contact, no matter how remote. So Toodle pip and stay inside and if you can’t then don’t post it on Facebook!

Looking at others posting their smiling photos, made me smile. It wasn’t so long ago, that people posted happy photos of them lunching with friends at beach clubs, or dancing at glamorous events. These days, my feed is filled with angry posts from people who are clearly struggling with being trapped at home. People I had assumed were light-hearted, and above resorting to online arguments over who claims to know more about Covid-19, politics, or religion. It’s as if suddenly, everyone is an expert on all things Chinese, having sourced their knowledge on Wikipedia. I drew the line and ended the call, when one FaceTime caller told me that my beloved Jack Russell, Henry, would be seen as a canapé in China. It’s as if ‘wine-o’clock’ starts earlier each day, and the rants too. Normal people, shouting at their phones, in an argument with themselves, as nobody really cares about what you’re saying. At numerous points during the week, I was almost ready to hit delete profile, just to escape. On the subject of escape, I stare at my diary, filled with endless cancelled plans. Cannes Film Festival - No. Monaco Grand Prix - No. Royal Ascot - No. The list of my usual summer, goes on, and each event has a red line through
BASE CAMP: Today my bed is my world. it. Over the years, these dates have given some structure, to a season otherwise filled with little more than the beach. Luckily, my house is right on the beach, so I won’t have far to go this year. Summer 2020 will be a very localised situation. As the week rolled on, I found myself setting up base camp from my bed. It’s as if everything I need is now located by my bed. If I’m downstairs and can’t find my, phone, glasses, diary, lighter, dog... chances are they’re at, or in my bed. I had to conduct a conference call on Thursday afternoon, and of course as the stressful work call went on, I found myself saying things like “I won’t leave my desk until we find a solution.” Leave my desk? I hadn’t even got any trousers on. I was in bed! I now rise early, swim, work out, make coffee and it’s back to bed. Some days, when I feel like it, I even take lunch in bed. I binge watch Netflix in bed. I write newspaper articles in bed. Bed is now Caput Mundi, and just like Marco Anneo Lucano who claimed it to be Rome in 61AD, for me, bed is now my great empire, from which I oversee work, banking, dining, and the greatest lockdown past time of all, sleep. Over the coming days, before getting into a heated row on Facebook, with people who don’t deserve your time, stop. Ask yourself, is there something else I could be doing? Read a book, tend to the garden, clean your pool. Anything is better than bad energy. Stay safe / stay sane x

INTRUSIVE thoughts are thoughts that pop in to your head which are beyond your control and can become obsessive. They are thoughts that you do not want, and obsessions that you certainly would rather not have! It is something I have learned to deal with over the years, it can be anything from an unwanted image or a scenario that plays in your mind that can cause so much upset and can be very hard to manage or eliminate. The hardest one I feel like I have had to deal with to date is ‘losing the closest person to me,’ it’s a thought that creeps in, can be very graphic and very upsetting. It can pop up out of nowhere. I haven’t found a way to get rid intrusive thoughts, however there are ways I have been shown through therapy to cope with the unwanted thoughts: 1) You need to recognise if the thought is truly intrusive. Are you obsessing over something you don’t want to? Is the thought popping up at times when it
doesn’t make any sense? Is it upsetting you? 2) Acknowledge these thoughts when they happen. Tell yourself it is your mind producing these thoughts and try to distract yourself. 3) Take a deep breath. If you practise meditation, this a brilliant time to take 10 minutes out to practise it. Give yourself time. 4) Don’t judge your thoughts. Understand that these thoughts are part of your illness, so there isn’t any need to feel guilty, they aren’t wanted thoughts! 5) Try and replace the thought. This is the tricky part, try and think of a ‘happy’ or ‘positive’ thought. It’s easier said than done! But remember that these thoughts are created in your mind, they are not truly what you think or are not truly a part of you. Intrusive thoughts can happen to everyone. It’s how you cope with them that defines how much they’ll rule your life. In the end, it’s absolutely crucial that you work with a professional to find out how to help you cope with intrusive thoughts if you are finding it is having a negative affect on your day to day life. THE onset of spring means the beginning of the dreaded hay fever season, bringing symptoms including watery eyes, an itchy throat and frequent sneezing. Here are some natural options to combat the effects. 1. Quercetin reduces inflammation and inhibits the release of histamine. To up the
quercetin in your diet, opt for foods including berries, parsley, onions, and peppers. 2. Biotin is a B vitamin which helps to maintain the healthy function of mucous membranes. Try consuming more fish, egg yolks, avocados, green leafy vegetables and nuts to get your dose. 3. Green tea, chamo-
mile, elderflower, ginger, peppermint and anise limit the effects of hay fever. They will also help to keep you hydrated. 4. There is strong evidence to show that consuming local honey can help limit the effects of hay fever as it exposes you to the same pollen, helping your body to naturally form a tolerance.
It’s not a case of one size fits all MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man BECAUSE of the situation at the moment I don’t switch my phone off at night as I have children and grandchildren in the UK and, in case of emergencies, they can get hold of me 24/7. What I don’t have it on for is so Vodafone send me messages at 4am in the morning on a regular basis. Surely a communications company this size can work out that I’m not going to be interested in getting a free phone, unlimited roaming, which, at the moment is as useful as a chocolate teapot or, in fact, any offers at that hour of the day! There are so many rules at the moment and I appreciate that the government is doing its best, but unfortunately it’s not a case of one size fits all. I wonder why in the UK you can do some exercise, but here you can’t? It would make such a difference if you could get out for 30 minutes and just stretch your legs. It seems a little strange that if you don’t have a dog or
a young child you can’t go out except to do essential shopping. I happen to live up in the hills and am able to walk my dog once a day. Mrs S does the other walk. When I’m out I see maybe one other person walking their dog. But to be honest I don’t understand that they aren’t taking into consideration that everyone needs to exercise, not just dogs and children. Is it just me or do you all feel that we have stepped out of reality and into another dimension? I feel like we are all now starring in a sci-fi movie. You know the one - the disaster movie that always starts with an expert or scientist being ignored by the government with some ulterior motive usually motivated by power or money or both. So what did I do to just give myself a boost? I decided to watch a movie and my choice was, wait for it, a 2011 film called Contagion which is about a pandemic that starts in Asia. The reason I watched it is I remember watching it when it came out and thinking it was all a bit far-fetched but after watching it again I couldn’t believe that if shown now it would be a documentary and not sci-fi. So now I’m going to watch Outbreak with Dustin Hoffman just to cheer myself up again.

DIONE LOCKYER IT’S not enough that we are in lockdown, but now us mums have to be teachers too! I hear you mumma’s. The first day, I was completely organised. The alarm was set, the laptop and books were neatly on the table, the timetable was neatly written using different colours, and everything was going to be fine. My son woke up on time, sat at the table, completed his work with only a few questions he needed help with and before i knew it, the day was complete! Wow! I can really do this, home schooling is a doddle, or so I thought!!! Fast forward to the end of the first week and things weren’t so dandy. My son was less motivated, the snooze button was pressed, the work got harder and OH MY GOD

THE STRESS OF HOME SCHOOLING - MUMS, YOU’RE DOING JUST FINE!
HOME SCHOOLING: Take it one day at a time. WHERE’S THE WINE!!! We had arguments, we had strops, we had complete meltdowns. What the hell am I doing, I’m no teacher, i hated algebra when i was at school
so how on earth can I teach it to my son? I’m not even fluent in Spanish, he attends a Spanish school I don’t understand, I can’t, i cant... I JUST CANT!!! The tears started to roll, i felt
as if i was failing as a parent, was my son going to be left behind? Was my son going to struggle when the schools reopen? Then it hit me, like a saucepan to the face Mums, WE ARE NOT TRAINED TEACHERS! We haven’t been to college or university to study how to teach our kids so why on earth are we putting so much pressure on ourselves? Secondly, this is new to our children too! They’re not used to the situation we are in, they look at their homes as a place to feel safe, a place to have fun, a place of calm. They have spent six long weeks stuck at home with a mum or dad who picks up the wine every time they hear the words... SCHOOL WORK. Give them and yourselves a break! Take it one day at a time. Whether your child completes
five hours or one hour’s worth of work, celebrate it. If your child is feeling overwhelmed and simply cannot face a day of home schooling, teach them something fun. Teach them life skills. Cooking, reading, home exercise, anything to put a smile on their beautiful faces. The reality is, the lack of workload will not affect their adult life, it will not stop them from getting their dream job. It will not stop them from living a successful life. They will catch up, they will succeed, they will be happy! The lockdown and pandemic will be talked about for years; don’t let your children or yourself look back on it with dread, hurt or frustration. Create wonderful memories and look back on this moment with nothing but love and a smile. I raise a glass to all parents. We’ve got this!

LAST week I ranted about antivaxxers and the Corona virus. It was followed by me discussing my Autism/Asperger’s, briefly. It’s not something I tend to talk about in detail normally. But as I’m writing a column. Perhaps it’s about time I did. So here goes… I was diagnosed late 30’s. I’d already guessed so a year or so before. What lead me to suspect I had Asperger’s Syndrome was someone on a reality TV show, of all things. He described himself as almost identical in the way he thought and acted. The penny dropped. I’d always felt ‘different.’ In primary school this wasn’t a bad thing. I was the daft kid and popular. I had obsessions, but they manifested themselves in silly TV shows or toys. I wouldn’t have stood out as Autistic, because I wasn’t the stereotypical introvert. I was shy out of my comfort zone, but I had many friends. I was happy and laughed my way through most of childhood. It felt safe. Then high school. Straight away I felt out of my depth. I was completely over-
FEELING DIFFERENT: You’re not alone. whelmed with the size of the place and all the new faces. The sounds - like the crowds of students moving down the corridors seemed deafening. There was no structure - a different classroom for each lesson, different faces every time. I still had
my small group of quirky friends I was comfortable with. But you do spend your majority of the time in the classrooms. Hitting teens was hard. I wasn’t ready to grow up. I still felt like the daft kid in primary school. So, I faked it. Not uncommon in Autistic girls, they call it ‘masking’ and it’s exhausting. I also developed an eating disorder at around 15. Again, not uncommon in Autistic girls. I lost a little weight to be told how good I looked. Well, I didn’t stop there! Because typical of someone with Autism, I became obsessed. I left school after achieving very little. I missed most of the final year because I’d fallen behind. By this time I was experiencing what I now recognise as anxiety. A panicky feeling which forced me to protect myself by zoning out, what is known
as ‘shutdowns.’ Lessons were too stressful. Further education and work were up and down. I tended to excel in jobs where I worked on my own initiative. The eating disorder dissipated towards my early 20’s. Life generally from then on was good. But I still felt like an alien. There were still situations I couldn’t handle too. Shopping centres for, example. The panicky feeling would come back. If I couldn’t leave straight away, I’d start to feel frightened. I couldn’t identify with the way other females thought either. But I got married and started a family. I did all the normal things that are expected of us, but still felt very detached from the human race. Then came that realisation. My new obsession became Autism! The diagnosis wasn’t a shock, because I’d already become a mini expert in the topic. So there you go. It’s not something I want to define me. But it’s part of me. Apparently, there’s many undiagnosed adults out there. So even if just one person identifies with this and that penny drops for them too, I’m glad I wrote it. Because once you realise why you’re not ‘normal’ you feel more normal. You’re not alone. Next week it’s back to ranting!

A CAFFEINE DREAM DEAR Euro Weekly, Thanks for keeping me going. I can’t wait to get back outside, I am genuinely missing random human contact. Before the lockdown I would be moaning about too many people in the street, the Spaniards congregating in the middle of small pavements for a family chat, nobody covering the tills on Mercadona when it’s busy, you know the regular moany old man stuff. Now I just can’t wait to see people in the street, children playing in the parks again, angry rushes along the high street to get home to my dog after work. It’s funny the things you take for granted that you miss. Hopefully, it will continue to make me feel differently. OUR VIEW Wild love FEW are lucky enough to go into the wild these days. Under lockdown, our horizons have shrunk. Beloved nature reserves and glorious national parks must wait until the quarantine is lifted. Yet it seems the wild is coming to us. In Barcelona, a snake is wrapped around a parked motorbike engine. In Puerto Banus, dolphins swim among the boats in the port. In Alhaurin, even wolves have been spotted and large jellyfish float through Venice’s now clear canals. Animals are moving into the spaces that humans have vacated, and we are unusually receptive to their arrival. When days seem so indistinct, the appearance of a new bird outside the window suddenly seizes our attention. Birdsong is clearer now that the traffic has hushed. With quieter roads, the death toll of furry creatures is guaranteed to fall. Grass verges, left uncut, will provide a home for wildflowers and a breeding ground for bugs and insects. Heavy machinery is parked up, leaving nests undisturbed. Animal appearances seem to bring such joy to human hearts that some tales of returning wildlife have been exaggerated or confected. However, much work to protect wildlife has slowed or stopped due to social distancing measures, and the dog shelters and horse sanctuaries, often strapped for cash, are under increased pressure. In developing countries, the absence of tourism and monitoring groups may give free rein to poachers who will see no more need to obey quarantine rules. People already living close to the edge may be forced to exploit nature to survive as their work disappears. When the pandemic is finally over, wildlife may vanish as fast as it emerged, we may not really notice so we should enjoy it while we can.

I’ve never responded to any article in any media even though I’ve become increasingly infuriated by the sensationalism, fake news, hysteria, and unbalanced minority driven reporting by so many mainstream journalists in the last three years. But the above article did it for me, so I’m addressing my concerns to yourself as one of the only sane voices in an increasingly insane media, maybe you could spread some sanity. When we embed the media in a military conflict it places risk and burden on the units and soldiers involved, but it’s justified as it’s essential for the public to know what is happening on the front line and for the military to know the public understands their role and hardship. Covid-19 is a war and no different, when we emerge from the far side of this crisis the authorities and the public will be desperate to analyse and learn from every aspect of what happened. The health service will be desperate to show the world the warlike conditions they worked under, the hardships they faced, and the superhuman effort it took from everyone to manage an impossible situation and save lives. The average human brain has 40,000 times more (a mere 10 billion out of 37 trillion cells in the entire body). The human heart beats 100,000 times each day which is 36.5 million in a year. There are three trillion trees on our planet - 400 for every human being. Not a lot of people know that! There are also 17 million flies for every human. This means there are almost 120 quadrillion of them (120,000,000,000,000,000). Don’t ask me how they discover this - or who worked it out.

Obviously, these are rough estimates by various institutions and in some cases estimates vary quite widely, but some of the statistics are mind-blowing, nevertheless. The black hole is three million times the size of the Earth and is 54 million light years away. As the speed of light is about 300,000 kilometres per second, this means one light

trillion fish left in our oceans (half as many as in 1970). This is about 500 for every human. Peru is the second largest fishing nation and has the world’s biggest commercial fishing fleet. Its port of Chimbote lands more fish than Spain. Almost the entire catch is anchovies which are mashed and exported as fishmeal to China and Europe, earning €1 billion per annum. This is in turn fed to factory farmed pigs, chickens and fish. The disappearance of anchovies as a source of food for birds and larger fish has resulted in a 95 per cent depletion of birds off the Peruvian coast and an estimated 90 per cent of fish. In the late 19th century, Peru’s biggest export was bird droppings for fertiliser. One million tons a year were shipped overseas - half of it to the UK. Most of the birds have now disappeared.

Touching letter HOLLYWOOD star and allround good guy Tom Hanks has sent a touching letter and a very meaningful gift to a young Australian lad, who wrote to tell him he was being bullied because of his name - Corona. Eight-year-old Gold Coast schoolboy Corona De Vries penned a letter to the actor after he and his wife Rita Wilson both went down with Covid-19 while in Queensland and spent several weeks recovering in hospital. Corona asked if the couple were OK and told the Oscar winner he liked his name, but that kids at his school were calling him “coronavirus” and it made him feel “sad and angry.” Hanks replied with a letter beginning “Dear Friend Corona” and words of en-
couragement he bashed out on a typewriter. “Your letter made my wife and I feel so wonderful! Thank you for being such a good friend friends make friends feel good when they are down,” he told him. “You know, you are the only person I’ve ever known to have the name Corona - like the ring around the sun, a crown,” he added. “You’ve got a friend in me!” Hanks hand wrote at the end in a reference to his role as Woody in the Toy Story films. The star also sent the lad a Corona-branded typewriter he had used during his quarantine in Australia, saying: “I thought this typewriter would suit you. “Ask a grown-up how it works. And use it to write me back.”
