M O S T re a d e r s w i l l n o w h a v e h e a rd o f Captain Tom Moore, a 99-year- old army veteran who has raised more than £27.5 million to help the NHS in the fight against Covid-19 by completing laps of his Bedfordshire garden walking with the aid of a frame. The veteran, who served in the Second World War, initially set out to raise £1,000 by challenging himself to walk 100 times around his Bedfordshire garden before his 100th birthday on April 30. He finished his final four laps last Thursday mor ning and has now vowed to keep on walking as long as donations keep coming in. NHS Charities Together, which will benefit from the funds, said it

was “truly inspired and humbled.” More than a million donors have contributed to his JustGiving page since it was set up. Mr Moore began raising funds to thank the “magnificent” NHS staff who helped him with treatment for cancer and a broken hip. Prince William and the Duchess of Cor nwall have now both written and donated an undisclosed figure to the JustGiving appeal. A caring hand

VELEZ-RUBIO resident Andrea Lowe has been doing her bit to show the community’s appreciation for the medical and cleaning teams doing such an incredible job on the frontline of the fight against the spread of Covid-19. Andrea donated her entire stock of Oriflame hand cream to the area’s medical centres and hospitals, and then launched an appeal for others to make donations too, as have reps in other regions. “The response has been amazing, and is being supported by all nationalities,” Andrea told the Euro Weekly News. This week she presented 54 tubes to the health centre in Velez-Rubio. More tubes are on their way to care for the hardworking hands of staff at the Velez-Blanco centre and for the hospital in Huercal-Overa. Andrea stresses further donations are very welcome, and can be made via PayPal or bank transfer.

Moors & Christians event postponed MOJACAR’S Moors & Christians festival has become the latest event in Almeria’s cultural calendar to be suspended due to the coronavirus crisis. The council has announced that it has, with the backing of the AlMosaquer Moors & Christians Association, decided to postpone the festivities which were due to be held over the weekend of June 12, 13 and 14 given the health emergency situation. The plan is to put back the celebrations to later in the year at a date yet to be determined, and depending on the pandemic situation. All the activities planned for the run-up to the Moors & Christians have also been postponed. This means the fiesta poster competition, the

Wage donation to those in need THE Huercal-Overa Council members are donating half their salaries to help local families hardest hit by the coronavirus crisis. Mayor Francisca Fernandez announced 50 per cent of the wages of both the full-time and part-time councillors would go to the Municipal Social Emergency Programme. The mayor said the local authority members wanted to help “meet the needs which are coming up every day in our municipality because of the health crisis which is creating situations of need in many homes.” Fernandez stressed that the council is implementing various measures under the programme and that more measures “to reactivate the local economy,” with particular focus on businesses and the self-employed, would follow with the approval of the municipal budget for the current financial year. She described the councillors’ pay donation as a “necessary, supportive and fair measure to help, albeit in a small way, those social groups which are the most affected by this difficult situation in which

APPEAL: The mayor called on residents “not to believe or forward misleading information.” THE mayor of Turre has revealed that a Turre resident has tested positive for coronavirus and has called on residents to remain calm and not listen to unfounded rumours. Speaking in English in a video posted on social media, Martin Morales explained the infected person has been hospitalised, adding that it was likely “the contagion occurred in the same hospital a few days earlier.” The confirmation of the municipality’s first Covid-19 infection has meant that three homes in the town have been quarantined in accordance with

Adra farmers fumigating streets LOCAL farmers in Adra have once again been giving the local council a helping hand in thoroughly disinfecting the town in a bid to halt the spread of coronavirus. The farmers have under Local Police and Civil Protection supervision been carrying out nighttime fumigations of the street. The council stressed the farmers have been duly kitted out with personal protection systems and have followed mu-

came into force and people have had to be at home, our supply of electric is disrupted constantly throughout the day. “We can easily lose lighting at any time, and with our age, this makes it dangerous.” And they suspect foul play is responsible. “We believe that someone who has been working (before lockdown), and is now at home, is either using unmetered electric or the wrong type of equipment which is causing our supply to trip. “We can almost say when whoever starts or stops for lunch or a cup of tea, by the switch tripping. “I need an electricity supply as I have been looking after my wife who has been ill for the last six years. I have tried to contact Endesa to no avail, they do not seem interested or have English speakers. Can anyone help?” Mr Smith says he has had his supply checked and has been assured there are no problems.

Kidnapped woman rescued POLICE rescued a woman being held captive in a drug house in Almeria after she called the emergency services for help. Firefighters broke open the front door to the property in the Quemadero district of the provincial capital so police could free the woman. She told officers she had gone there to pay off a debt to the house owner, but when they disagreed over the amount she owed him he shut her in. The house where she was being held her against her will was being used to grow marihuana, and police seized 461 plants, along with the usual paraphernalia for indoor plantations. They also arrested a 56-year-old man whose job it was to look after the illegal cultivation. Subsequent investigations to identify the owner of the property led to 32-year A R C. He has been charged with a public health crime, defrauding the power supply and kidnapping and threatening behaviour.

A MAN who violated the lockdown restrictions five times has become the first person in the province to be sent to prison for breaking State of Alarm laws. A court in Roquetas has sentenced

the defendant to six months behind bars at the El Acebuche provincial jail for serious resistance of authority with the aggravating factor of repeat offences. According to Spanish press, the sentence states that the man had

acted with “complete disregard for the imposed state obligations” to fight the spread of coronavirus. The court found that he was award of the restrictions, but repeatedly ignored them.

No choice

FACE MASKS supplied by the national and Almeria governments are being distributed to local councils and to workers using public transport across the province last week, but on top of that, the association of Levante region municipalities has also made an important contribution. The association provided 60,000 surgical masks for localities including Antas, Carboneras, Cuevas del Almanzora, Los Gallardos, Garrucha, Mojacar, Pulpi, Sorbas and Turre. “We are grateful for the help of each administration which provides our villages with material, but the needs are so important that we have had no choice but to turn to the market to order a consignment in order to relieve the situation of the local authorities in our area,” commented association president Garrucha mayor Maria Lopez Cervantes. The association said the aim was to make it easier for the Levante region of the province to follow Spanish government and European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control recommendations on basic protection materials for zones where people gather, on public transport, or for people working. The association stressed that it shopped around among suppliers to ensure the

Deaths from Flu may be confused with Covid-19 By John Smith IT will be some time, if ever, before the truth will be revealed about how and why the Coronavirus Covid19 appeared and whether it was a natural event or a man-made atrocity, but in the meantime countries all over the world are trying to c o m b a t t h e e ff e c t s w i t h mixed success. At the time of writing, latest figures suggest that 165,000 people have died and their death certificates list Covid-19 as the reason, but it is possible that this figure is wildly inaccurate because the number of deaths attributable solely to the pandemic may be greatly inflated. According to World Health Organisation figures up to 650,000 people die of flu each year and in an early study by the UK Office of National Statistics, deaths in March supposedly from the virus showed that 90 per cent of those who died had evidence of underlying health

problems such as heart disease, upper respiratory tract infection, dementia or diabetes. Looking at Spain, the number of deaths from flu seem to have been increasing annually with a massive upsurge in 2018 and then a drop (although deaths were still high) in 2019. Figures suggest that from 2015 to 2017, deaths in Spain had varied from around 500 to just over 1,000 but then in 2018, it shot up to almost 15,000 due to a number of factors which saw more than one strain appear, a longer than usual duration of the flu circulating and an unexpected rise in the number of those over 65 who succumbed to the virus. The following year 2019, the number to die was 6,300 so it is clear that flu has become stronger and has greatly increased the number of deaths over the last two years. Things are now confused because the symptoms of coronavirus and Covid-19 are

more interested in trying to save lives than identifying the

strain so it is almost a natural assumption that Covid-19 is the culprit. It is believed that there are 2.5 million confirmed cases of the virus around the world and with a population of 7.8 billion which equates to a tiny percentage of those still alive. The figure for Spain with a population of around 46 million is 200,000 diagnosed with 21,000 deaths and British research suggests many who would have been likely to die during the year from one form of illness or another have had their deaths brought forward by six months thanks to the pandemic. Some psychologists believe that the longer the lockdown lasts the greater the risk that death rates will increase due to the fact that some people are unable or unwilling to attend hospitals for cancer and heart checks, others will start to become mentally unstable due to the boredom, especially if living alone and many will suffer from economic hardship, which will in turn affect their mental state.

OUTSPOKEN Ryanair boss, Michael O’Leary has attacked easyJet and other rival carriers over plans for social distancing on flights to Spain and the UK, when passenger serv i c e s e v e n t u a l l y re turn. easyJet have come out in favour of removing the middle seat to give customers a protective buffer-zone to persuade them to return to air travel once the coronavirus

pandemic has subsided. A number of carriers seem set to go along with the idea that was first mooted by air regulator IATA, but Michael O’Leary has branded the innovation as “nonsense.” The controversial chief says that getting rid of the middle seat will do absolutely nothing to boost the confidence of customers or anything to stop the spread of Covid-19. “It would have no beneficial effect whatsoever.

“People would travel to an airport without social distancing. You can’t do social distancing in the airport either at check-in, at security, at shops and restaurants. Even the airports admit that, and so the seat idea will not work.” O’Leary suggested that some lessons should be learnt from Asia, where travellers have a compulsory temperature check and must wear a face mask.

Firstly, anyone who is not resident in Spain should not fly to Gibraltar with a view to entering Spain via the land frontier. In order to enter Spain, travellers will be required to show proof of nationality or evidence that they are resident there, such as a residency certificate/card, together with valid travel documents. A pair of them tried to hide among rocks when they realised the helicopter was hovering above, but a ground patrol found them and issued the corresponding sanction. A fourth person who was also on the beach in violation of the lockdown managed to slip away.

Toilet Paper Hoarder A MAN in the Australian city of Adelaide has tried to return thousands of dollarsworth of supplies he stockpiled in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, such as toilet paper and disinfectant gel, to a local supermarket. The director of the Drakes Supermarket, John-Paul Drake, claims that he bought all of the supplies in order to turn a profit by selling them online. Unable to do so, as supermarkets have been adequately stocked, the man has tried to return the 132 packages of toilet paper and the 150 onelitre bottles of disinfectant gel that he had previously purchased. According to Drake, the customer even needed a team of warehouse workers to

A MAN in Las Galletas in Tenerife resorted to a somewhat extreme measure to avoid being nicked by Guardia Civil, leaping into the sea to get away from officers. According to the Guardia a patrol based at Playa de las Americas came across the man on a public street. When they approached him to find out why he was not at home he shot off in the direction of the coast clutching a bag in his hand. He ignored the officers’ orders to stop and instead hurled himself into a rocky area of the water. It immediately became obvious the escapee was having trouble staying afloat.

Eventually he managed to cling to a rock, and then officers lost sight of him. A rescue operation involving Guardia Civil, mountain and sea rescue, a helicopter, Local Police and Civil Protection was launched, but after a day’s search there was still no trace of the man. The hunt for the missing man resumed the following day. But at midday he walked into the Playa de las Americas Guardia station. He told officers he had hidden in a cave until late at night and then gone home. The escapade led to his arrest on charges of serious disobedience of authority.

Factories To Restart GERMANY’S carmaker Volkswagen is planning the staggered reopening of its SEAT car factories in Spain, beginning from April 27. That date would mark nearly six weeks after it stopped all production at some of the country’s biggest manufacturing plants. The swindle, which it is feared could rip off thousands if taken seriously, is one of the lastest ‘phishing’ crimes aimed solely at getting hold of people’s personal and bank details. And Mercadona has denied any knowledge of the so-called voucher. “Consumers should beware of a message offering a €500 Mercadona voucher. It is phishing and the company has denied having any such offer,” warn the police.

Guardia Civil loses eighth officer SPAIN’S Guardia Civil lost its eighth police officer to coronavirus on Saturday, April 19. Corporal Major, Francisco Castro Monje, assigned to the Ciudad Real headquarters, died early in the morning, according to the Ministry of the Interior and the Guardia Civil. Castro was a highly decorated officer and was one of the founders of the Special Intervention Unit (SIU). His colleagues have described him as a ‘simple, loyal and noble’ person. He had been in ICU for a

Sue Parmenter-Phillips on a mission to get fit COASTAL CLEANERS ANDALUCIA founder Sue Parmenter-Phillips is on a mission under lockdown. She is working out daily in her basement gym to get as fit and healthy as possible for scuba diving, as this will be the first year she will be leading dives and helping to train other divers. In the first four weeks of the State of Alarm she did 60 kilometres on her cross trainer, having not done any running before. Unsurprisingly Sue will be aiming to get back in the water to explore the underwater world and to encourage others to take up scuba diving as soon as it’s possible.

Havovi Rabadi getting fit HAVOVI RABADI admits she was initially worried when the State of Alarm came into force and about being stuck inside, but she soon found she could connect with other people at her Mojacar Playa complex and stay fit and active at the same time. Neighbour Sandra Brown came up with the idea of a daily keep-fit routine, and thanks to Sandra’s encouragement, every day Havovi and other ladies get out on their terraces at the same time for an hour’s session of dance and exercise together, albeit from a distance. Havovi is looking forward to being able to go out and meet up with the friends she is missing so much and enjoy a drink together, but not a hug or a kiss for some while, she adds regretfully.

Communities sometimes get around this by raising the fees and then offering a discount to all those who pay on time. The late payers must pay the full amount. This has the same effect and is legal as well. Cutting off access to the pool is another dubious area. The way to change anything in a community is to as­ semble enough votes and proxies to vote the change at the AGM. This exercise in basic democracy requires ef­ fort and determination. Olive tree devastation A SHOCKING report from Holland’s University of Wageningen suggests that over the next 50 years, Spain’s olive trees could be deci­ mated by Xylella fastidiosa, a bac­ terial pest which could cost the country just under €17 billion if left unchecked. The effects of the bacteria means that the trees develop burned leaves, dry branches and the eventual death of the tree and since 2016, trees on more than 130,000 hectares in Spain have been affected. Telephone numbers required WITH effect from last Monday (April 20) train operator Renfe introduced personalised tickets for users of its AVE, Alvia and Euromed rail services as well as trains with reserved seats.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT OBSERVING the Labour party, as they endeavour to turn this whole virus disaster into a political issue, really is quite pathetic. With their usual arrogant attitude, they continue to insult the intelligence of the public by insisting their efforts are merely to ‘assist the government’ and that they ‘only have the country’s wellbeing at heart.’ Utter bull. They and their new leader (who also needs to answer a few questions when this is all over!) are taking every opportunity to gain Brownie points by nit picking every single piddling fault they can find. Of course mistakes have been made. Of course, in hindsight, different decisions may have been more beneficial, but overall I believe that in this completely unprecedented event in our history, the government (minus its leader for most of the time) has done a magnificent job. This has been one of the UK’s

most challenging periods ever. The logistical problems have been a nightmare. The economic and health issues something no government could ever envisage and I for one think they have risen to the oc-

casion most admirably; particularly in managing to strike the delicate balance between keeping a cool head and the creation of total panic! For the leftie whingers to keep trying to score political points is

a positive disgrace. Almost beyond belief they are now calling for the government to publish their plans for the country’s recovery when the nightmare is all over. Give us a break. I’m sure that post pandemic exit plans have been give serious reflection, but at this time the present problems must obviously take overwhelming priority. Endeavouring to deflect the government’s concentration by asking it to prematurely declare its future intentions is frankly beyond contempt. Just as predictable as the left trying to gain political points, up pop the usual suspects trying to turn it all into a racial issue. ‘Why’, they bleat, ‘are there more ethnic communities falling victim to the Corona virus than the indigenous population’? Well, let’s think… er, maybe it’s a racist virus? Well you never know do you? Give us a break. I suppose that

the situation wouldn’t have anything to do with the fact that most of the ethnic communities totally ignored the isolation and social distancing rules at the outset? Or that a number of Mosques stayed open. Or that some of the Imams were preaching that the disease was the wrath of Allah over the infidels and not an Islamic problem at all? Sometimes I really do despair of it all. I also think Trump had a point in suspending funds to the WHO. They did pander to China. The have ‘praised’ its efforts to control the virus. They did fail to admonish the Chinese hierarchy for withholding the facts of the plague for weeks before they had no choice. In my opinion both the WHO and the Chinese have great deal to answer for. Medication : Finding the right cocktail for you! MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED FINDING the right medication or combination of meds can be a long and tiring journey. The journey begins with making the decision to saying YES to trying medication and sticking to them! Then it can be a long process of finding what works and what really doesn’t. Bipolar disorder varies greatly from person to person, and so does the right medication. What works for one person may not work for another. My GP decided to start with what medication to prescribe based on the symptoms I reported to him and then make adjustments from there. It’s very important to be open and honest with your doctor so they are really able to help you. You should tell them about any side effects you experience, and whether or not you really did take your meds and if you think they working and why!! From my GP I was passed on to the Mental Heath support team, where I was assessed by a psychiatrist and psychologist twice a week to start with. I went through all three stages when I got my bipolar diagnosis… • DENIAL > I’m not ill, there is nothing wrong with me, I’m fine. I don’t need medication. I used to flush them down the toilet!! I was angry and hurt. • ACCEPTANCE > Nobody chooses to have bipolar. Nobody is to blame. Maybe this is why I have always been different? What if these pills will help me live a relatively normal life? • RECOVERY > Knowing that I do need medication to be ‘well’ along with certain lifestyle changes means I have not been sentenced this lifetime of suffering. So yes, medication can help but its no magical cure, self care, meditation, therapy and sleep are also so impor-

tant. Tracking your self care and moods will help you notice the earliest signs of a possible relapse. I have been on medication now for eight years yet I still have a problem with it, I tend to hide the fact that I have to take medication to be well. I’m actually scared of what I would be like, who would I be, if I wasn’t on them. But I have come to terms that I would rather take medication and feel ‘okay’ than to be riddled with pain, dark and suicidal thoughts and anxiety every day. My point is , NO I don’t believe in pushing someone into taking medication is the right way, but to say, that it’s important to be open to treatment, there’s no need to suffer in silence or to be proud. Just because you take medication it is not a sign of weakness. The bottom line is the right treatment can help restore some of your quality of life and allow you to feel healthy once again. I would like to say a massive THANK YOU to all of you who email in, I do love reading your letters. Just remember that you are not alone in this! IT’S RAINING, IT’S POURING GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY AS if by Lambe-Murphy’s Law, it seems, not even the weather will let up. Since lockdown began, the sky has been grey and the rain abundant. Perhaps a reflection of the global mood. Then, I look at social media, and the sun is shining in Ireland and the UK. Friends post photos, wearing shorts and polo shirts, quaffing Pimm’s, as they lunch al fresco, on roof terraces, overlooking empty streets. Meanwhile, in Marbella, the weekly trip to the supermarket has almost become an occasion. As if we may meet the love our life, whilst choosing tomatoes. Or more likely, in the wine section. As the rain poured and temperatures remained humid, trying to select the right outfit for such an outing, took more than a few attempts. In the end, I found my late grandfather’s Barbour, an oddlooking rain hat, a fresh mask and gloves, and I was good-to-go. A simple jacket from the late 50’s, that I’m pretty sure, has seen many fun times. I know it has, since I started wearing it, many years ago. My grandfather was a wonderful man. Always wise, confident and happy. Always with a great sense of style. He lived a full life, was known to enjoy a proper lunch, and despite surviving the Second World War, also went on to survive my grandmother. Sadly, not in age, as he passed before her, but he survived life with a strong lady. Don’t get me wrong, she was a pretty fabulous lady, but she was very demanding, in that, she expected perfection at all times. I guess the apple didn’t fall far from the tree. As I queued, in a slow-moving line at the local Supersol, I felt the rain and it bothered me. Then, I thought of the great man who once wore the jacket. What would he do in challenging times like these? Without realising, I removed my shades and hat, looked to the sky, and let the rain run down my face. Feeling the rain, was a joy. It made me realise, I was outside! After a long week at home, I was lucky to be in line at the store. While we may believe we know best, we

Those who have survived experiences, we may never have to endure. Recently, my heart pounded, as I saw Captain Tom Moore on the news, raising millions for the NHS. Such an amazingly positive 100-year-old gent. Such an honourable man. His manner made me remember, to stop complaining and get on with it. Smile and be extra polite, to everyone we meet. Remembering my grandmother, I know that these days I care less about perfection, and more about my sanity. I’m sure she would disagree. You know what I mean, I tend to load the dishwasher, the morning after. I attempted to cut my hair, it looks bad. So, I wear a hat. Then again, I am just like my grandmother - as even if I must wear a silly hat, it has to be Prada.
