HERO MOST readers will now have heard of Captain Tom Moore, a 99-year-old army veteran who has raised more than £27.5 million to help the NHS in the fight against Covid-19 by completing laps of his Bedfordshire garden walking with the aid of a frame. The veteran, who served in the Second World War, initially set out to raise £1,000 by challenging himself to walk 100 times around his Bedfordshire garden before his 100th birthday on April 30.
He finished his final four laps last Thursday mor ning and has now vowed to keep on walking as long as donations keep coming in. NHS Charities Togethe r, w h i c h w i l l b e n e f i t from the funds, said it was “truly inspired and humbled.” More than a million donors have contributed to his JustGiving page since it was set up. Mr Moore began raising funds to thank the “magnificent” NHS staff who helped him with treatment for cancer
and a broken hip. Prince William and the Duchess of Cornwall have now both written and donated an undisclosed figure to the JustGiving appeal. In a video filmed from his home, the future king said: “He’s a one-man fundraising machine and god knows what the final total will be, but good on him, I hope he keeps going.” It’s not just his walking that has caught people’s attention, Captain Moore’s NHS charity single, a rendition of

BIRTHDAY SHES WI HAPPY Birthday to us! We have managed to reach 21 years old, now we can fly a helicopter, adopt a child and start to drink if we were in the USA. We weren’t going to let any virus stop our celebrations here at HQ and tucked into a feast of cakes and treats at our office party. Albeit at arm’s length and with our face masks on. Two of our longest serving team members Jose and Marcos blew the candles out on our fantastic birthday cake. Our fearless leaders Michel and Steven Euesden rejoiced in reaching this landmark with some positive words: “As we come into six weeks of lockdown the communities have
come together better than we could have ever imagined. The people’s paper is delivering your message every single week, in print and online. You say it, we communicate it,” exclaimed Michel. Virtual alternatives OLIVA U3A has come up with virtual ways to support members through an unsettling time. As always, efforts include both mind and body support, both serious and fun. Through regular email newsletters, members receive updates on the latest government decisions, urging them to follow these guidelines. These updates also include information on where to get help if anyone can’t get to the shops or collect medication. Some members have stepped forward to help other members liaising with authorities or to help in Spanish. There’s even a chat line for members on their own who need to hear a friendly voice. And some groups are embracing this new virtual world to great effect. For instance, the Line Dancing group posts step-by-step videos and zumba classes are held online, there are ideas for keeping busy and exercising the mind, a regular photography competition, short stories, brain teasers and quizzes. To say the years at times have been challenging would be an understatement, through two recessions, the last being one of the worst ever, then the Brexit saga as it became and now

Waiting for the stork A PAIR of storks being cared for in two recovery centres in Cáceres and Madrid managed to nest and have four chicks in the aviary area of the Terra Natura Benidorm nature and animal park. The veterinarians of this centre dedicated to animal conservation, so far, have not carried out any veterinary examination of small birds to avoid possible rejection by their parents. As soon as they get a little older, they proceed to conduct an in-depth review and determine their gender. The parents arrived at Terra Natura Benidorm in 2006 and 2008, from recovery centres. They are very attentive and protective of their four chicks. Both have spent time incubating the eggs until hatching. Now they are in charge of feeding the young and protecting them. Despite the fact conservation of this species is not a concern, it should be noted that a few years ago its populations were reduced due to the use of pesticides. However, thanks to conservation efforts and better use of land and wetlands, their populations have recovered with a slight increase. Currently, Terra Natura Benidorm has a group of four common storks, plus the four new chicks.

Half a million masks THE Valencian Business Association (AVE) has donated half a million surgical masks to 25 hospitals in the Community to help combat the spread of Covid-19. In a statement, AVE said that
“given the current health crisis caused by coronavirus we want to reiterate appreciation, consideration and recognition of all staff of the health system with this gesture.”
The organisation added: “We are sure that with common sense, discipline, rationalising fear and the collaboration of all of our society, we will be able to overcome this health crisis.”
Kids get out AT the time of going to press the Spanish government had proposed allowing children up to 14 years of age to leave the house accompanied by an adult to go to the shops, pharmacy or bank as of next Monday, April 27. “We are talking about outings for children accompanied by an adult who obviously will take care so that they do not go to public parks where they can touch things that are contaminated,” said Minister of Education, Isabel Celaá. The government appeals to the responsibility of the parents and stresses that “the measures are not being relaxed” and the
children should not be going out for walks or to play. When asked about the age up to which minors will be allowed to go out, the minister specified that the legislation estimates that children are those minors up to 14 years old. At the meeting held on Monday by the Minister of Health, Salvador Illa, with the councillors of the autonomous communities, three ages were put on the table: children up to 12 years old, as the Prime Minister said last Saturday; up to 14, as proposed in some autonomous communities; or 17, as stated in Catalonia or the committee of experts that has advised the government.

Fugitive caught A BRITISH fugitive and suspected paedophile has been arrested in Benidorm during a State of Alarm patrol, after a European and extradition warrant was issued. The 26-year-old fled the UK after being charged with the exploitation of minors and child pornography. The hunt began after UK officials issued a European arrest and extradition warrant, and Benidorm's National Police was "informed of his possible presence" near Benidorm. It’s not yet known exactly when he fled the UK. They carried out street searches and it was during a routine State of Alarm check, they captured the suspect. International authorities were notified and he was immediately arrested, without any resistance. The detainee has been placed at the disposition of the Central Court of Instruction of the Audiencia Nacional, where his extradition to the UK will be processed.

In memory
THREE minutes’ silence was held in Benidorm on Sunday afternoon, April 19, in memory of all those who have died of coronavirus and frontline workers fighting the virus. At 12 noon, in the Plaza de Sus Majestades los Reyes de España, official flags were at half mast on the balcony of the town hall. On behalf of the town, the council and the police forces, Mayor Toni Perez expressed his condolences to those who have died and their families, and gratitude to “the citizens of Benidorm who have participated from their windows and balconies during this moment of emotion, breaking into ap-

Safer shopping ALICANTE has launched an ‘online market’ to promote safe shopping without leaving the home during the State of Alarm, with more than 150 businesses already on board. Mayor Lidia Lopez said the City Council’s Department of Commerce initiative is part of an ambitious project to “publicise our local products and shops, not only locally but as a national and international showcase, and is open to all establishments that are interested.” Included on the site are the names, contact details and exactly what the company offers. The website allows users to filter from your home page a section divided by type of activity and commercial groups. From there, customers can contact the individual businesses, and place orders by phone for home delivery. Plan Resiste brings lockdown help CALPE’S local government presented its Plan Resiste at the last council meeting, held by videolink. Councillors approved the Budget modification making €1 million available to Social Services to alleviate the effects of lockdown on Calpe families and businesses. An initial €100,000 has already been allocated to immediate help for families unable to pay for food, medication and
other basics. The town hall also proposed a Budget modification releasing €830,000 to help local business with direct aid as well as indirect help by subsidising municipal taxes. Backed by all parties, the motion was left in suspense pending the regional government’s response. Councillors voted to lower IBI rates on their habitual residence for pensioners and long-term un-

Shop manager held TIP OFFS from members of the public in Alicante led to the arrest of a 24-hour shop manager for allegedly selling drugs over the counter. The 40-year-old Congolese man is suspected of dealing hashish from the shop and has been charged with drug trafficking and
a crime against public health. In a statement, Alicante National Police said “due to the limitations of mobility established by the State of Alarm, drug traffickers, in order to continue their illicit activity, look for other sales opportiunities.”
In his case, the shop manager is suspected of selling drugs in “a camouflaged way,” as though “he was selling food.” During the arrest, initiated following information from the public, officers found quantities of hashish “prepared for sale.”

EWN has done it again, hitting the nationals with the Daily Mirror, Daily Star and the Daily Mail among British press crediting Spain’s largest expat newspaper, Euro Weekly News, for the hottest stories on the Costa Blanca and the Costa del Sol. We revealed how holidaymakers to Spain’s Benidorm on the Costa Blanca could see a pint as low as 64 cents shortly to entice business back. And within hours, the Mirror, the Sun, Daily Mail, the Scottish Sun and Daily Star had all picked up the news, linking their own online stories back to our original article. The message spread and Costa del Sol bar owners took notice, responding with what appears could break out as a beer trade war in the fight to attract back customers. EWN broke the news and once again, the British press ran with the breaking piece, crediting the top English speaking newspaper in Spain, Euro Weekly News.

Deaths from Flu may be confused with Covid-19 By John Smith IT will be some time, if ever, before the truth will be revealed about how and why the Coronavirus Covid19 appeared and whether it was a natural event or a man-made atrocity, but in the meantime countries all over the world are trying to c o m b a t t h e e ff e c t s w i t h mixed success. At the time of writing, latest figures suggest that 165,000 people have died and their death certificates list Covid-19 as the reason, but it is possible that this figure is wildly inaccurate because the number of deaths attributable solely to the pandemic may be greatly inflated. According to World Health Organisation figures up to 650,000 people die of flu each year and in an early study by the UK Office of National Statistics, deaths in March supposedly from the virus showed that 90 per cent of those who died had evidence of underlying health
problems such as heart disease, upper respiratory tract infection, dementia or diabetes. Looking at Spain, the number of deaths from flu seem to have been increasing annually with a massive upsurge in 2018 and then a drop (although deaths were still high) in 2019. Figures suggest that from 2015 to 2017, deaths in Spain had varied from around 500 to just over 1,000 but then in 2018, it shot up to almost 15,000 due to a number of factors which saw more than one strain appear, a longer than usual duration of the flu circulating and an unexpected rise in the number of those over 65 who succumbed to the virus. The following year 2019, the number to die was 6,300 so it is clear that flu has become stronger and has greatly increased the number of deaths over the last two years. Things are now confused because the symptoms of coronavirus and Covid-19 are

strain so it is almost a natural assumption that Covid-19 is the culprit. It is believed that there are 2.5 million confirmed cases of the virus around the world and with a population of 7.8 billion which equates to a tiny percentage of those still alive. The figure for Spain with a population of around 46 million is 200,000 diagnosed with 21,000 deaths and British research suggests many who would have been likely to die during the year from one form of illness or another have had their deaths brought forward by six months thanks to the pandemic. Some psychologists believe that the longer the lockdown lasts the greater the risk that death rates will increase due to the fact that some people are unable or unwilling to attend hospitals for cancer and heart checks, others will start to become mentally unstable due to the boredom, especially if living alone and many will suffer from economic hardship, which will in turn affect their mental state.

Mobile World stays put
ANNUAL MEETING: The contract with Barcelona has been extended for a further year. THE Mobile World Congress (MWC), the telecoms industry’s biggest annual meeting will continue in Barcelona until 2024. It’s good news for Spain and the Catalan capital, after this year’s event was scrapped in February as major exhibitors pulled out over the growing early concer ns over the coronavirus. The GSMA association that hosts the congress said that the contract with Barcelona had been extended for a further year. “By extending through 2024, we are demonstrating our commitment to our ecosystem as well as what the host city is doing,” GSMA’s CEO John Hoffman said in a statement.
“We are pleased to report that we have had tremendous support and an early commitment with many exhibitors for future years,” he added. The MWC attracts over 100,000 people to Barcelona every winter, and the one-year extension is related to the 2020 cancellation. It is not linked to talks over a new contract for the MWC to be held in the city beyond 2024. After the cancellation, the Catalan finance minister, Pere Aragones, called for a stronger alliance between the GSMA and the region, adding that a way to do it would be for the organisers to extend the MWC presence in Barcelona beyond 2023, when the contract ended.

Body found A MURDER inquiry was launched in Valladolid on the morning of Thursday April 16, after the body of a young male was found in a park having suffered a fatal blow to the head. The victim, believed to be a minor, was discovered shortly before 7.45am in Calle Salinas park near the sports centre in the town of Laguna de Duero, police sources have confirmed. A passer-by discovered the body, still unidentified and called 112. The Judicial Police is investigating the case, but no further details have been released as yet.

Supermarket scam NATIONAL POLICE are war ning shoppers in the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca to IGNORE a supermarket scam offering €500, via WhatsApp and social media, to spend in Mercadona - claiming it’s a lie. The swindle, which it is feared could rip off thousands if taken seriously, is one of the lastest ‘phishing’ crimes aimed solely at getting hold of people’s personal and bank details. And Mercadona has denied any knowledge of the so-called voucher. “Consumers should beware of a message offering a €500 Mercadona voucher. It is phishing and the company has denied having any such offer,” war n the police. Netflix is another of the major company’s
fraudsters are latching onto to try to get hold of people’s details, promising three months free viewing. This particular message reads: “Hello, due
to the current Covid-19 crisis, Netflix and WhatsApp (by Facebook) have decided to help users around the world get over the boredom of not going out and
enjoying life to the fullest.” Recipients are invited to “three full months free from Netflix with no strings attached” by clicking on a link in the
text. The police have asked that this information not be shared if it is not verified, and advise against clicking on suspicious links.

Lockdown breaker sea escape A MAN in Las Galletas in Tenerife resorted to a somewhat extreme measure to avoid being nicked by Guardia Civil, leaping into the sea to get away from officers. According to the Guardia a patrol based at Playa de las Americas came across the man on a public street. When they approached him to find out why he was not at home he shot off in the direction of the coast clutching a bag in his hand. He ignored the officers’ orders to stop and instead hurled himself into a rocky
area of the water. It immediately became obvious the escapee was having trouble staying afloat. Eventually he managed to cling to a rock, and then officers lost sight of him. A rescue operation involving Guardia Civil, mountain and sea rescue, a helicopter, Local Police and Civil Protection was launched, but after a day’s search there was still no trace of the man. The hunt for the missing man resumed the following day. But at midday he walked into the Playa de las

Safety First For Tourism ONE of Spain’s top ministers has said that holiday travel from countries like the UK will only return, if the area is “extraordinarily” safe. Finance Minister, María Jesús Montero said: “Our country will not pick up the tourist industry until it is safe, both for people living here and our visitors.” Jesús Montero was speaking in a Madrid video conference with journalists, and emphasised that the return of foreign tourists would depend on when the borders between the European Union countries would be reopened. She added that such moves would need major coordination to be done by the EU, but she

Big Crowds To Wait MADRID’S mayor has said that Spain’s La Liga football season will finish behind closed doors, with other sporting events set to be held in empty venues until at least the end of summer. José Luis Martínez-Almeida said the coronavirus pandemic “won’t be under control” for events with big crowds to re-
sume soon, if even this year. In spring and summer there won’t be any events with crowds in Spain, and possibly not in the autumn either,” Martínez-Almeida said. “Since we will still not be fully in control of the pandemic, we will have to change all of our old habits before we are even allowed to go back onto the streets.”

Spanish Mortgages and the IRPH clause What and how much can you claim? gage loans signed in Spain because of the possible lack of t r a n s p a re n c y i n t h e documents. In today’s article, we
want to focus on what can be claimed and what are the possible consequences of the declaration of nullity of the IRPH clause. In this sense, it must be taken into account that: The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has pointed out on numerous occasions that an abusive clause should not be applied and should be removed in full from the contract, without the judges being able to modify it. But it clarifies this by saying that only when the elimination of the abusive clause means that the contract cannot survive and the consequences are more damaging to the consumer, in accordance with article 6, section 1 of directive 93/13, then the judges could modify or re-
place it with another one. Thus, we understand this to mean that the Spanish courts must decide whether the IRPH clause (fixing of the variable interest of the mortgage loan) is abusive, is not transparent and whether the mortgage loan contract can survive without that said clause and if not, whether the consequences could be more harmful to the consumer, if so, they should replace the nullified clause with another one according to Spanish law. The ECJ said in its judgment of March 3, 2020 in relation to the IRPH clauses: “In that context, were the referring court to find that (i) the term at issue is unfair, (ii) the mortgage loan agreement at issue in the main proceedings is not capable of continuing
in existence without that term and (iii) the annulment of that agreement would expose the applicant in the main proceedings to particularly unfavourable consequences, it could replace that term …” As lawyers specialising in the area of banking law in Spain, we understand that it is absolutely possible that a mortgage loan contract could survive even if the variable interest clause IRPH is eliminated, for being insufficiently transparent, since legally nothing prevents a loan from having NO interest and is what is known as a free or interestfree loan. In fact, the Spanish Civil Code itself states in article 1740 that the loan can be free of interest and in article 1755 says interest
should not be owed unless expressly agreed, therefore, not only could a loan exist without interest, but legally all loans (with or without mortgage) have no interest, unless the parties agree it. For all the aforementioned, we understand that it could be requested that the IRPH be declared null and void, as well as the variable interest clause of the mortgage loan and that the bank should return all interest paid. Anti-body testing already underway POLICE and employees in essential services have had rapid tests to detect for antibodies indicating Covid-19 immunity. ‘Patti Recovery’ is a joint project by Benidorm Town Hall, the IMED Levante private hospital and the Visit
Benidorm tourist board, Mayor Toni Perez announced. This will serve to verify the real situation of the local population regarding coronavirus, explained Perez. “Our findings will be passed on to the Public
Health authorities,” the mayor added. IMED Levante provided 500 rapid tests for the initial phase involving police officers and the Proteccion Civil members who attend to the homeless shelter at the Raul Mesa sports centre. The second phase of testing will extend to Collective Help Network (RAC) volunteers and municipal employees providing essential on-site services. Finally, the remainder of municipal personnel will be tested, together with firms catalogued as essential services authorised to operate during the State of Alarm.

Ready for a return to normality LIKE everybody during lockdown, Benidorm Town Hall is doing jobs that would otherwise be complicated. Now that the ban on all non-urgent work has been lifted, Calle Sol can be repaved while pedestrians are absent. Deteriorated by lorries
delivering to the Edificio Abril market and adjoining Calle Gambo, the central street badly needed repairs, explained Benidorm mayor, Toni Perez. “We are prioritising work in busy areas so they are ready once the State of Alarm is lifted and the town returns to normal,” he said. “We are also working where Ruzafa meets Herrerias and Emilio Ortuño, which probably has more pedestrian traffic than any-
where else in Benidorm,” the mayor added. “We concentrated on the pavements in early March, but now we are asphalting the road and installing embedded traffic lights.” Perez explained that the town hall is installing eight of these units, which are synchronised with existing vertical traffic lights, to alert pedestrians who, amongst other things, are distracted by the mobile phones. Albir - Alfaz NEWS An anniversary with a slight difference APRIL 16 was the 184th anniversary of Alfaz’s independence from the Polop. Its full name of Alfaz de Polop was changed to Alfaz del Pi and the town no longer belonged to the Barony of Polop, which had controlled the Marina Baja since mediaeval times. Alfaz Town Hall usually organises events celebrating “our roots, our culture and our heritage,” Arques wrote in an open letter to residents. “Circumstances are different this year. An unexpected health crisis has changed the world and our municipality. We are facing an invisible and unknown enemy but we aren’t giving in,” the mayor declared.

Keeping in touch via video link THE town hall’s Other Nationalities department opened a direct telematic link with representatives from Alfaz’s foreign residents’ associations and groups. This maintained the department’s habitual monthly contact with these collectives, providing swift and personalised attention that at the same time cleared up doubts arising from the Covid-19 pandemic. During the present crisis Alfaz has been monitoring vulnerable cases in collaboration with the associations, Other Nationalities councillor Martine Mertens announced. More than half of Alfaz’s registered residents are from other countries, Mertens pointed out, and many are elderly. “Our international character marks us out as different, identifying Alfaz as an integrated municipality that has set an example of harmonious coexistence for many years,” said the councillor, who is Belgian and has lived in Alfaz since 1989. “We are making every effort to keep in touch with all our residents - including those from almost 100 different countries - to answer their doubts as rapidly as possible.”

AS employees in non-essential services returned to work after Easter, passengers using public transport received free face masks. The lockdown regulations were tightened up before and over Easter to prevent all unnecessary travel and discourage citydwellers from visiting second residence. These have now been relaxed although the State of Alarm continues as before and insistence on social distancing remains in place. Coordinated by the town hall’s Public Safety and Social Welfare departments, Alfaz’s Local Police, Guard Civil and Proteccion Civil distributed the masks each morning and after-

Once the State of Alarm was imposed on March 15 SAV - with daily support from the USAR 13 non-government organisation and input from Proteccion Civil volunteers - has worked on all fronts to clean and disinfect the town to halt the spread of Covid-19 with lorries, as well as operatives on foot in the street. “We are convinced this is having an effect and counts for a lot in the overall work to defeat this virus,” said councillor Oscar Perez. Cleaning schedules were stepped up some time back because they were a key factor in preventing Covid-19, he added. “The town hall isn’t going to drop its guard in this respect,” Perez declared.
ALFAZ is one of 72 Spanish municipalities promoting innovation via the Spanish government’s Innpulso initiative. Alfaz councillor Dolores Albero recently attended Innpulso’s latest telematic forum, discussing how to bring the internet, social media and information services closer to the general public. Afterwards, Albero reported with satisfaction that Alfaz stood out for teleworking and online accessibility to the public together with its internet offers for entertainment, culture and leisure.
ALFAZ’S Culture department has published a five-page online history of the pine that gives the town its full name. The account by municipal archaeologist Carolina Frias Castillejo explains that according to the historian Francisco Figueras Pacheco the pine in Alfaz’s Plaza Mayor was first mentioned in 1786, although possibly this was planted when the parish church was built in the mid-18th century. Each tree has lasted between 60 and 70 years, and the seventh, which survived for 70 years was replaced just over a year ago in April 2019. It was an emotional moment for many of Alfaz’s older residents.

More than €15,000 emergency funding for 98 families CALPE’S Social Services department allocated over €15,000 in emergency help for residents whose finances were hit by the Covid-19 lockdown. Staff began processing applications on April 3 and in the first four days received 358 phone calls and 349 emails, assigning €15,770 after reviewing 98 cases. Social Services anticipates allocating another €15,000 after receiving more requests on April 14, 15 and 16 following the Easter break. This funding, approved at the last
council meeting, is direct assistance to cover the cost of food, personal hygiene products and chemist’s bills for residents without resources. Two employees from other municipal departments have been transferred to Social Services to provide backup and push through Covid-19 assistance, with two more due to arrive shortly. Four more staff have been assigned to the town hall’s Home Care service while Social Services are also attending to gender violence cases.

Elderly woman saved in house fire GUARDIA CIVIL officers rescued an 80-year-old woman after fire broke out inside her Moraira home. Alerted to the fire by neighbours, the officers reached the scene almost immediately as they were only 300 metres away at the time. On arriving, the woman, the villa’s only occupant, explained that she was afraid the fire could spread to the garage where her car was parked and cause an explosion. They controlled the blaze with garden hoses until the fire brigade arrived, but had to take it in turns to train the water on the fire as they were wearing only surgical masks and could withstand the fumes and smoke for only a few minutes at a time.

An App to get things moving THE local PSPV set up a website to help Javea’s commerce get back on its feet when lockdown ends. The municipality’s 11 PSPV councillors used €3,900 of their own money to design and launch the App which allows users to make - and pay for - advance orders or buy vouchers for when lockdown ends. This should provide some much-needed liquidity for Javea businesses, many of which have closed or now work with restrictions, resulting in ze-
ro turnover and nothing with which to pay overheads, the party explained. The app is 100 per cent local and will be free for all Javea-based firms, shops, bars and business-owners regardless of whether they belong to one of the town’s three business associations. The website will also provide details of businesses that remain open and whether they accept telephone orders and deliver. The project has been well-received by the local
business community and should launch within days, said Jose Chulvi, Javea mayor and president of the local branch of the PSPV.

Craftlover Ceri has also been busy making old-fashioned aprons and mop caps for a traditional English tea room she plans to run at the Lions’ Party in the Park fundraiser now due to be held later in the year, as well as crocheting blankets, baking, and walking round her garden in Arboleas for exercise. When lockdown is lifted a walk by the sea is top of Ceri’s list.
Claire Andrews, dog owner CLAIRE ANDREWS says she feels that she is lucky to be a dog owner, as she at least can have some outdoor exercise with her four-legged friend Jack during the lockdown. Claire became a widow four years ago, but says that she has still enjoyed her life on the Orihuela Costa and has made a lot of new friends. “Since losing my husband, getting involved in so many local groups has been brilliant for me, and one of the sad things of what has happened right now is that I can’t meet up with them.” “It’s the same for everybody, I suppose.”
Kate Kelly, Fuengirola HOW have you been coping with the lockdown? “I have been working from home which has been harder than usual as I also have to entertain my lively son. So, we have been doing lots of baking like chocolate cupcakes then we have been counteracting that by doing Joe Wicks exercises and yoga every day.” What is the first thing you will do when the lockdown is lifted? “Well... I would love to go to a chiringuito and have some nice seafood and a glass of Cava, but I would probably settle for a pint and a pork pie!”

DOG breeder Suzanne Mansell has a second home near Alicante. “I had booked to fly out for the whole of March, but changed my flight until the middle of month, which was obviously cancelled, “I would now be spending quarantine there (Spain) if I hadn’t. I don’t think it matters where you are, everyone is facing the same challenges. I have got my dogs to keep me busy, and my family. “Netflix is a saviour, and I love reading. “First thing I will do when this is over is catch up with friends and book a flight.”

“I think about what’s going on in the outside world and it makes me anxious, but I bounce back to keep the family together making sure fitness classes, set meal times are scheduled and routine is in place ... they love routine it’s been the key to keeping them focused.” Catching up with her parents and elderly nannies in the UK will be one of the things Jody will do after the State of Alarm.
LILLY VAN TONGEREN WAS born in Holland and spent most of her life there before moving full time to Elviria in 2012. She is retired and happy that with a pension she is able to live a comfortable life and things haven’t changed that much for her personally with the lockdown. Sue Parmenter-Phillips on a mission to get fit COASTAL CLEANERS ANDALUCIA founder Sue Parmenter-Phillips is on a mission under lockdown. She is working out daily in her basement gym to get as fit and healthy as possible for scuba diving, as this will be the first year she will be leading dives and helping to train other divers. In the first four weeks of the State of Alarm she did 60 kilometres on her cross trainer, having not done any running before. Unsurprisingly Sue will be aiming to get back in the water to explore the underwater world and to encourage others to take up scuba diving as soon as it’s possible.
Havovi Rabadi getting fit HAVOVI RABADI admits she was initially worried when the State of Alarm came into force and about being stuck inside, but she soon found she could connect with other people at her Mojacar Playa complex and stay fit and active at the same time. Neighbour Sandra Brown came up with the idea of a daily keep-fit routine, and thanks to Sandra’s encouragement, every day Havovi and other ladies get out on their terraces at the same time for an hour’s session of dance and exercise together, albeit from a distance. Havovi is looking forward to being able to go out and meet up with the friends she is missing so much and enjoy a drink together, but not a hug or a kiss for some while, she adds regretfully.

When the weather permits, a bit of gardening. And I’m on my 11th book. “One of the first things I’ll do after lockdown, if my passport is here, is sign on with a new agency and get back to work.”

Nissan fights Covid-19 THE Hospital de Sant Pau, QEV Technologies, along with Nissan and the technology centre Eurecat have developed the QVent respi rator, to be used in hospitals throughout the world. WHILST there are in theory strict controls imposed on member states by the EU with regards to support of local businesses it has decided as a ‘measure of last resort’ this may be overlooked if all governments agree. The intention is that with the drop in value of shares, wealthy foreign governments may attempt to take over weaker companies and this is something that the European Union wants to block. It therefore wants to allow tem porary state control by injecting funds into vital companies.
LEGALLY SPEAKING Can they issue fines? We live in a community where we have penalties for paying our fees late. Twenty per cent is added for late payment and access to the pool and garden area denied. These areas are enclosed and owners are is sued an electronic key. This key is blocked for late payers. As we have not ed here before, YOU AND THE Spanish community LAW IN SPAIN law prohibits com munities from imposing fines and surcharges on commu nity fees. Communities sometimes get around this by raising the fees and then offering a discount to all those who pay on time. The late payers must pay the full amount. This has the same effect and is legal as well. Cutting off access to the pool is another dubious area. The way to change anything in a community is to as semble enough votes and proxies to vote the change at the AGM. This exercise in basic democracy requires ef fort and determination. Spending down A NEW study by the University of Cambridge based on results of 1.4 billion credit card sales shows that spending in Spain has dropped by 49 per cent compared to the first quarter of 2019 and this is blamed on the lockdown.

More repayments frozen THE Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in the UK is looking to extend the assistance being given to those who are having dif ficulty in paying back loans.
It has already arranged a three month freeze on loan and credit card pay ments and is now looking to extend this to include car loans, renttoown and buynowpaylater
schemes as well as loans made by pawnbrokers. In addition it wants to see those giving pay day loans to allow a one month freeze for their borrowers.

Olive tree devastation A SHOCKING report from Holland’s University of Wageningen suggests that over the next 50 years, Spain’s olive trees could be deci mated by Xylella fastidiosa, a bac terial pest which could cost the country just under €17 billion if left unchecked. The effects of the bacteria means that the trees develop burned leaves, dry branches and the eventual death of the tree and since 2016, trees on more than 130,000 hectares in Spain have been affected. Telephone numbers required WITH effect from last Monday (April 20) train operator Renfe introduced personalised tickets for users of its AVE, Alvia and Euromed rail services as well as trains with reserved seats.
The intention is that passengers will be required to give telephone numbers when making reser vations so that the company is able to contact them in the event of a health alert or
any other problem with the service. Initially it will operate for passengers booking online directly with Renfe or through its App as well as station ticket offices.

The potential cost of replanting depleted areas with new trees is high and there will be a long wait for them to become fruitful with no guarantee that they won’t be come diseased again.

BUSINESS EXTRA Flying squad FARM workers from Eastern Europe will be flown into the UK over the next few weeks in order to help harvest fruit and vegetables as there are simply insufficient workers available in Britain. Six flights have been chartered so far.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT OBSERVING the Labour party, as they endeavour to turn this whole virus disaster into a political issue, really is quite pathetic. With their usual arrogant attitude, they continue to insult the intelligence of the public by insisting their efforts are merely to ‘assist the government’ and that they ‘only have the country’s wellbeing at heart.’ Utter bull. They and their new leader (who also needs to answer a few questions when this is all over!) are taking every opportunity to gain Brownie points by nit picking every single piddling fault they can find. Of course mistakes have been made. Of course, in hindsight, different decisions may have been more beneficial, but overall I believe that in this completely unprecedented event in our history, the government (minus its leader for most of the time) has done a magnificent job. This has been one of the UK’s

most challenging periods ever. The logistical problems have been a nightmare. The economic and health issues something no government could ever envisage and I for one think they have risen to the oc-
casion most admirably; particularly in managing to strike the delicate balance between keeping a cool head and the creation of total panic! For the leftie whingers to keep trying to score political points is
a positive disgrace. Almost beyond belief they are now calling for the government to publish their plans for the country’s recovery when the nightmare is all over. Give us a break. I’m sure that post pandemic exit plans have been give serious reflection, but at this time the present problems must obviously take overwhelming priority. Endeavouring to deflect the government’s concentration by asking it to prematurely declare its future intentions is frankly beyond contempt. Just as predictable as the left trying to gain political points, up pop the usual suspects trying to turn it all into a racial issue. ‘Why’, they bleat, ‘are there more ethnic communities falling victim to the Corona virus than the indigenous population’? Well, let’s think… er, maybe it’s a racist virus? Well you never know do you? Give us a break. I suppose that
the situation wouldn’t have anything to do with the fact that most of the ethnic communities totally ignored the isolation and social distancing rules at the outset? Or that a number of Mosques stayed open. Or that some of the Imams were preaching that the disease was the wrath of Allah over the infidels and not an Islamic problem at all? Sometimes I really do despair of it all. I also think Trump had a point in suspending funds to the WHO. They did pander to China. The have ‘praised’ its efforts to control the virus. They did fail to admonish the Chinese hierarchy for withholding the facts of the plague for weeks before they had no choice. In my opinion both the WHO and the Chinese have great deal to answer for. Out of the mouths of babes
BARRY DUKE SHORTLY after legislation was passed in 2002 that allowed same-sex couples in England and Wales to adopt kids, a friend asked me whether I had ever considered adopting. ‘No,’ I replied, ‘I don’t have a paternal bone in my body, and, to be honest, I’d be a terrible dad.’ Pressed further, I explained that, having been a dreadfully unruly child and a delinquent in adolescence, I simply didn’t possess the skills to raise a kid. If I tried, the result would be a troublesome mini me. I then recalled several instances of how I proved an embarrassment to my parents. One occurred during a family Sunday lunch, with grandma and grandad and several uncles and aunts. I was around five. The radio was playing softly in the background, and when Eddie Fisher came on with his 1952 hit Lady of Spain I started to sing along loudly, but with words that were never recorded.

‘Lady of Spain I adore you, let me lift up your frock and explore you,’ I let loose in a loud falsetto. Everyone round the table froze, and mum ordered me into the kitchen to finish my meal. I refused to budge, demanding to know what I’d done wrong. When she said that I’d sung something ‘filthy’ I pointed at dad and said ‘well, he sings that all the

time.’ Father turned beetroot red when everyone turned to fix him with looks that could kill. But if medals were awarded for embarrassing outbursts, my cousin Russell would have won gold for his observation at a zoo. He and I and my uncle Gerald were gazing into a cage of chimps when one became visibly aroused. ‘Look, Barry,’ shrieked Russell, that
monkey’s got a ding-dong just like daddy’s!’ Russell was also an incurable prankster who once emptied an entire container of Eno’s effervescent fruit salt in my baby sister’s potty. When she shot off the fizzing pot with an ear-piercing scream, both he and I rolled around on the floor with tears of laughter running down our cheeks.
For years, parents have posted examples on various Internet sites and in chatrooms of their kids saying funny or embarrassing things. But since Covid-19 lockdowns were introduced - forcing parents to spend more time with their little angels than ever before - the number of posts has skyrocketed. One site, Bored Panda, has some wonderful examples: • Four-year-old to daddy ‘can we get a kitten.’ Dad: ‘I’m allergic. We can’t be in the same house.’ Kid replies: ‘You could sleep outside.’ • ‘Yesterday my three-year-old told his grandma that he wasn’t in an old photo because he was still swimming in his daddy’s balls.’ • My seven-year-old just said ‘I’d like to go to heaven, but you can’t smoke weed there.’ Recently Bored Panda took things in a new direction by inviting readers to submit photos showing what quarantined life is like for parents having to work at home with their kids. DEAR Euro Weekly News, Should Spain ease lockdown restrictions? On my phone this morning was a survey to this effect. My view is proceed with great caution as we have come this far and it would be very much worse if we relaxed too soon. I have always regarded the volume of tourism in recent times to be one of the major threats to the planet and I feel this dreadful virus was spread globally in the main, due to this factor. Here in Spain, I commend the police diligence and the Spanish people for taking every step possible to heed the safety measures necessary and if, now, there is a glimmer of light ahead, please be sure. Nobody has died from being locked in, or up, or down... although like everybody it is a very lonely time and I am with the government and our town hall all the way in maintaining the present course of action. To those who choose to blame one man, Boris Johnson, name-calling and bigotry are not the way forward and certainly, the UK Prime Minister is hailed by all parties as having done all he could... it’s easy to sit back and criticise. OUR VIEW Deeper understanding IN theory, all of us are vulnerable to coronavirus, but in practice how well we fare has to do with pre-existing conditions that are not only medical but economic, social and political. Age was the first factor most of us heard about in the unequal impact of this virus. It seemed to affect older people the most and children hardly at all, with a lot of younger adults having mild cases. Then, March was full of stories of desperately ill and dying young people as cautionary tales warning that no one was guaranteed an exemption from this. The shutdowns that are meant to prevent its spread have wildly varying economic impacts. Some suddenly lost jobs. Some whose work was deemed necessary had to continue in the face of the danger of contagion - medical workers, firefighters, transport workers and food workers, from those on farms to supermarket stockers and cashiers. As schools were closed, the digital divide meant that more affluent families with computers, iPads and good internet connections had a very different home educational situation than families without these amenities. Some who live alone have been reporting devastating loneliness; people who live with others have reported everything from exasperation to fear. Warnings are emerging about a likely wave of mental health problems from these new situations. Domestic violence has risen dramatically in many places. Nearly everyone on Earth is, or will be, affected by this pandemic, but each of us is affected differently. Some of us are financially devastated, some are gravely or fatally ill or have already died. The pandemic is a spotlight that illuminates underlying problems. Taking care of each other begins with understanding the differences.

Naughty neighbours Dear Euro Weekly News, For weeks now, my Spanish neighbours have ignored the lockdown. It started when each day they invited in a man walking his two dogs. I hung a huge notice out of my bedroom window stating, in Spanish, “man with two dogs, two-metre distancing is the law.” Next day he arrived without his dogs. I resorted to taking photos. He hurled abuse at me as did the neighbours. Now, the son goes out aged about 50, unemployed, every day for about two hours. Easter Sunday the two granddaughters and their mother, visited, obviously to see their grandmother, their uncle and their father. Yes, I have photos. These people are endangering lives. Every day I hang out my notice, plus I now hang out a sign, draped with a black scarf stating the total deaths in Spain, this I obviously have to change daily. I cannot get through, on the phone to the Guardia, we are all helpless in this tragedy, especially when people like this do not self isolate. Every night I clap the carers, those Spanish neighbours never do. I am 75 years old, I have been out once shopping. I am in lockdown as required by this emergency Spanish law. I am proud to be a resident of Spain, Spain is saving my life, and I will survive, but will others with neighbours like mine? How many more will have to die because of this appalling attitude? A sour taste Dear EWN, Please allow me to share my nightmare experience with Orange the mobile and internet supplier. It started when I noticed I did not have an internet connection. I telephoned the English-speaking helpline (laughs out loud) and the agent said a technician would call me back, little did I know this would lead to a total of 25 telephone calls and speaking to 22 different people between Monday and Friday. From excuses of the Fraud Department cancelling my account to ‘the system’ doing it by itself, many dropped phone calls and even a trip into Fuengirola to an Orange shop and received a fine from the police for being out. I then spoke to a young Orange operator who called to arrange an appointment with the Tecnicos. As if by magic they arrived 30 minutes later and fitted a new router and explained at some point my landline number was changed as was the password to access wifi with my mobile. Orange cut my internet package completely without warning and without reason and appear to be useless at rectifying the problem causing days of stress and anger. Their efforts to solve the problem stemming from their huge blunder have been nothing short of a disgrace. Ronnie Waugh

The journey begins with making the decision to saying YES to trying medication and sticking to them! Then it can be a long process of finding what works and what really doesn’t. Bipolar disorder varies greatly from person to person, and so does the right medication. What works for one person may not work for another. My GP decided to start with what medication to prescribe based on the symptoms I reported to him and then make adjustments from there. It’s very important to be open and honest with your doctor so they are really able to help you. You should tell them about any side effects you experience, and whether or not you really did take your meds and if you think they working and why!! From my GP I was passed on to the Mental Heath support team, where I was assessed by a psychiatrist and psychologist twice a week to start with. I went through all three stages when I got my bipolar diagnosis… • DENIAL > I’m not ill, there is nothing wrong with me, I’m fine. I don’t need medication. I used to flush them down the toilet!! I was angry and hurt. • ACCEPTANCE > Nobody chooses to have bipolar. Nobody is to blame. Maybe this is why I have always been different? What if these pills will help me live a relatively normal life? • RECOVERY > Knowing that I do need medication to be ‘well’ along with certain lifestyle changes means I have not been sentenced this lifetime of suffering. So yes, medication can help but its no magical cure, self care, meditation, therapy and
sleep are also so important. Tracking your self care and moods will help you notice the earliest signs of a possible relapse. I have been on medication now for eight years yet I still have a problem with it, I tend to hide the fact that I have to take medication to be well. I’m actually scared of what I would be like, who would I be, if I wasn’t on them. But I have come to terms that I would rather take medication and feel ‘okay’ than to be riddled with pain, dark and suicidal thoughts and anxiety every day. My point is , NO I don’t believe in pushing someone into taking medication is the right way, but to say, that it’s important to be open to treatment, there’s no need to suffer in silence or to be proud. Just because you take medication it is not a sign of weakness. The bottom line is the right treatment can help restore some of your quality of life and allow you to feel healthy once again. I would like to say a massive THANK YOU to all of you who email in, I do love reading your letters. Just remember that you are not alone in this! I write on personal experiences I have come across over the years, I am by no means a professional or a doctor, but if I can help and make just ONE person not feel so alone with this uphill battle, then I will of course carry on writing.
