MOST readers will now have heard of Captain Tom Moore, a 99-year-old army veteran who has raised over £28 million (at the time of going to print) to help the NHS in the fight against Covid-19 by completing laps of his Bedfordshire garden walking with the aid of a frame. The veteran, who served in the Second World War, initially set out to raise £1,000 by challenging himself to walk 100 times around his Bedfordshire garden before his 100th birthday on April 30. He finished his final four laps last Thursday mor ning and has now vowed to keep on walking as long as donations keep coming in. NHS Charities Togeth-

BIRTHDAY SHES WI HAPPY Birthday to us! We have managed to reach 21 years old, now we can fly a helicopter, adopt a child and start to drink if we were in the USA. We weren’t going to let any virus stop our celebrations here at HQ and tucked into a feast of cakes and treats at our office party. Albeit at arm’s length and with our face masks on. Two of our longest serving team members Jose and Marcos blew the candles out on our fantastic birthday cake. Our fearless leaders Michel and Steven Euesden rejoiced in reaching this landmark with some positive words: “As we come into six weeks of lockdown the communities have

come together better than we could have ever imagined. The people’s paper is delivering your message every single week, in print and online. You say it, we communicate it,” exclaimed Michel. A fine situation in Nerja OVER the last week Nerja’s Local Police issued 43 fines, one resulting in an arrest, for flouting lockdown requirements. Five people were fined for using the communal areas of apartment buildings and residential communities and six who, when stopped, could not account for their presence there. Since the State of Alarm announcement on March 14, the Local Police issued a total of 155 fines and made three arrests. Public Safety councillor Francisco Arce revealed that soldiers from the Spanish army’s UME emergency unit were present on April 11, providing backup for the Local Police and Guardia Civil.

TORROX mayor Oscar Medina asked the central government to waive beach bar charges this year. Those bars that occupy the publicly-owned maritime strip must pay fees to Costas, the

coastal authority attached to the national government’s Environment department. Medina has written to the Ministry, asking Costas to study the possibility of the payments, pointing out that as the

chiringuitos had to close owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, Torrox is seeking ways to alleviate their current financial situation. “Tourism is one of the principal sectors driving our municipality’s economy,” Medina wrote. “Many families depend on the chiringuitos, not only their owners, but the waiters, cooks, kitchen hands and even the people who hire out beach beds,” the mayor rea-

Velez-Malaga zooms in to meetings VELEZ-MALAGA Town Hall has arranged for all councillors to take part in committee meetings and plenary sessions. Mayor Antonio Moreno Ferrer announced that the town hall’s New Technologies department headed by Juan Carlos Muñoz had taken rapid and efficient action to solve the difficulties posed by the nationwide State of Alarm and lockdown. The town hall has also made a wide range of online services available to residents who can now obtain digital and Padron certificates,

Moreno said. They can also contact Town Planning or Social Services without any problem. Even before the State of Alarm was announced, New Technologies was already taking preventive measures in anticipation of what was coming Muñoz said. Programmes and procedures for teleworking were updated and many of the town hall’s services to the public adapted so they could be carried out electronically.

Kids get out ON Tuesday evening Spain’s government made a sharp U-turn and relaxed lockdown restrictions even further for parents, improving on measures announced earlier that generated huge criticism from regional heads. Earlier on Tuesday the government announced that children under the age of 14 would be allowed to accompany parents on essential outings such as banks, supermarkets and pharmacies from Monday April 27. However, after a backlash from various regional presidents, the Health Minister Salvador Illa announced an amendment to the new rule, which now allows parents to take short walks with children near their homes. “As a father, I feel a little bit disappointed,” tweeted Andalucia’s President Juanma Moreno. “It seems more reasonable

MasterChef star FRIGILIANA is proud to have the only working molasses plant in southern Europe. This claim to fame attracted Spain’s MasterChef programme, whose eighth season has just begun. The second programme which aired last Monday and was recorded in February, showed the MasterChef contestants and jury in Frigiliana and featured the local molasses and avocados. The MasterChef hopefuls were set the task of preparing food for 100 diners who included Frigiliana mayor Alejandro Herrero and Juan Carlos Maldonado, vice-president of the provincial council, the Diputacion.

The municipality had once again been chosen as an exceptional setting, and had been promoted at the highest possible level, Herrero declared beforehand. The MasterChef visit also highlighted Frigiliano’s gastronomy, he added, not least because the local chef, two Michelin-starred Benito Gomez, was invited to join the jury in last Monday’s episode. A record number of 30,000 hopefuls applied to compete in this eighth series, whose theme of sustainability and protecting the marine environment is reflected in the recycled, biodegradable décor and equipment of the MasterChef kitchen.

Landslip damages four Almuñecar homes A LANDSLIP wrecked properties and a water deposit in Almuñecar’s El Rescate area. Luis Aragon and Javier Garcia, the town hall’s respective Environment and Urban Development councillors, visited El Rescate to inspect first-hand the 150-metre section of affected land where a

metre-wide fissure has appeared. Residents first noticed slight movement 10 days before the landslip damaged four properties, most of which are now “total ruins” according to Garcia. “We’ve also seen how the downward movement continues to advance,” the councillor said

The affected houses - none of which are habitual residences and the approach road are now cordoned off, he said. “There is no danger to anyone as this is a rural area without residents where no other homes are affected,” the councillor explained.

MOTRIL’S fishing fleet is again going out to sea each day. Three of the 26 boats remain in port owing to the biological shutdown to replenish fish stocks but following the State of Alarm lockdown only seven boats initially went out. “We have been through some very bad weeks with prices for some catches falling through the

European residents appreciate ‘safe and peaceful’ ALMUÑECAR Town Hall is distributing online posters in different languages with lockdown information and details of services that are now available. “Many British, Nordic, French and German residents are living here with us during the Covid-19 crisis and we decided to reach them with information in their own language,” explained Almuñecar’s Social Services councillor

Maria del Carmen Reinoso. “We are also grateful for input from members of the communities that the posters are targeting,” the councillor said. The posters have been uploaded to social media sites popular with European residents and are displayed in shops, supermarkets, chemists and newspaper kiosks still open during lockdown.

Although many foreign residents would normally have returned to their own countries by now, a considerable number preferred to be quarantined in Almuñecar and La Herradura, representatives from the local European community, told the town hall. “Amongst other things they are enjoying a community that has become safer and more peaceful,” they explained.

use La Concepcion water to alleviate La Viñuela’s situation. The La Concepcion reservoir is at 90 per cent capacity following recent rainfall and it could soon be necessary to release water, Asaja pointed out. It would be preferable to use this for Axarquia crops, the association said. The area will receive 25 per cent less water from the La Viñuela reservior than during the previous

October-September hydrological year, putting many growers in a ‘very complicated’ situation. La Concepcion reservoir is essential for the Costa del Sol’s domestic supply, admitted Asaja which would prefer a transfer to La Viñuela rather than lose water that Axarquia growers badly need. “This year, exceptionally, water consumption is going down owing to closed hotels and re-

duced tourism. We fear an un-dam and the loss of a scarce resource like water.” Just over 10 cubic hectometres have entered La Viñuela since March 31, although this increase was “absolutely necessary” according to Asaja. “Some irrigation communities have already used their April-June allocation already and it is still April,” the association said.

Couple arrested in Nerja for seizing son THE parents of a sevenyear-old in care were arrested in Nerja after removing him from the Children’s Protection Service. The couple, aged 27 and 39, no longer had custody of the child but were allowed an unsupervised visit at the end of December last year. Police began looking for them when they failed to return the boy to the Asociacion Hogar Abierto centre where he lived. The father’s extended family and their constant changes of address made it difficult to locate the couple and the child, the regional authorities admitted afterwards. While the child was missing neither he nor the parents received medical treatment, no attempt was made to enrol him at a school and there was no contact with Social Service, leaving no official paper trail to track them down. Finally, police found the parents and child in an isolated house in Nerja that the couple had rented months before they took the child, leading investigators to suspect they had been planning his disappearance for some time. The boy has now been returned to the care of the Children’s Protection Service.

We revealed how holidaymakers to Spain’s Benidorm on the Costa Blanca could see a pint as low as 64 cents shortly to entice business back. And within hours, the Mirror, the Sun, Daily Mail, the Scottish Sun and Daily Star had all picked up the news, linking their own online stories back to our original article. The message spread and Costa del Sol bar owners took notice, responding with what appears could break out as a beer trade war in the fight to attract back customers. EWN broke the news and once again, the British press ran with the breaking piece, crediting the top English speaking newspaper in Spain, Euro Weekly News.

The Friends of Asociacion Girasol

WE are all living in difficult times. This affects everyone from the nowunemployed village dweller, who must stay isolated, to the business-owner and employer forced to close. Charities have been obliged to cease their normal fundraising activities while their workload remains the same. There is no government help for them. Asociacion Girasol is no exception. It is a registered palliative care charity (Asociaciones de Andalucia 9341) dedicated to supporting and improving the quality of life of patients with advanced, incurable illnesses, their families and carers in the Antequera region. “We cannot simply shut down,” the Friends of Asociacion Girasol said. “These people still need our help and our small professional team is continuing to carry out certain duties.” All normal fundraising activities have

ceased. There can be no fun fundraising events to bring in a regular income. No weekly markets to add immeasurably to their income and thus no funds coming in to continue aid work. Searching for alternative ways to raise funds from locked-down life, the Friends of Asociacion Girasol hit upon a scheme to produce a cookery book from their supporters’ favourite recipes. They were invited them to send them in, along with a small donation and collated into an e-book dedicated to all whose lives have been affected by Covid-19. This special book is now available to purchase online for €9, all of which will go directly to the charity. Deaths from Flu may be confused with Covid-19 By John Smith IT will be some time, if ever, before the truth will be revealed about how and why the Coronavirus Covid19 appeared and whether it was a natural event or a man-made atrocity, but in the meantime countries all over the world are trying to c o m b a t t h e e ff e c t s w i t h mixed success. At the time of writing, latest figures suggest that 165,000 people have died and their death certificates list Covid-19 as the reason, but it is possible that this figure is wildly inaccurate because the number of deaths attributable solely to the pandemic may be greatly inflated. According to World Health Organisation figures up to 650,000 people die of flu each year and in an early study by the UK Office of National Statistics, deaths in March supposedly from the virus showed that 90 per cent of those who died had evidence of underlying health

problems such as heart disease, upper respiratory tract infection, dementia or diabetes. Looking at Spain, the number of deaths from flu seem to have been increasing annually with a massive upsurge in 2018 and then a drop (although deaths were still high) in 2019. Figures suggest that from 2015 to 2017, deaths in Spain had varied from around 500 to just over 1,000 but then in 2018, it shot up to almost 15,000 due to a number of factors which saw more than one strain appear, a longer than usual duration of the flu circulating and an unexpected rise in the number of those over 65 who succumbed to the virus. The following year 2019, the number to die was 6,300 so it is clear that flu has become stronger and has greatly increased the number of deaths over the last two years. Things are now confused because the symptoms of coronavirus and Covid-19 are

It is believed that there are 2.5 million confirmed cases of the virus around the world and with a population of 7.8 billion which equates to a tiny percentage of those still alive. The figure for Spain with a population of around 46 million is 200,000 diagnosed with 21,000 deaths and British research suggests many who would have been likely to die during the year from one form of illness or another have had their deaths brought forward by six months thanks to the pandemic. Some psychologists believe that the longer the lockdown lasts the greater the risk that death rates will increase due to the fact that some people are unable or unwilling to attend hospitals for cancer and heart checks, others will start to become mentally unstable due to the boredom, especially if living alone and many will suffer from economic hardship, which will in turn affect their mental state.

Objections to Maro develoment dismissed as ‘lies’ NERJA’S Town Planning councillor Nieves Atencia responded to what she termed “lies” regarding the Salsa (Sociedad Azucarera Larios SA) project. “This is not a new agreement, since negotiations began in 2015,” the councillor declared regarding plans for an 18-hole golf course with 680 properties and several hotels in Maro. The document published in the Official Provincial Bulletin (BOP) was dated March 23 but the 20 days allowed for appeals do not begin until the State of Alarm is lifted, Atencia said. Nor was the project rushed through under cover of the coronavirus crisis she insisted as the project submitted to the BOP in Malaga on March 13, predating the State of Alarm decree. The councillor also claimed that a video on the social media was “a lie.” This, Atencia maintained, was a presentation submitted by Larios in 2017 to Andalucia’s former three-party coalition. “It was a dream on Larios’ part which cannot be considered a reconstruction project,” Atencia declared. “It is lamentable that some bodies and political parties are creating social alarm based on lies,” she said, reassuring Nerja and Maro residents. “This isn’t the moment to discuss the agreement. There will be time to debate its terms once we are back to normal,” the councillor promised.

TORRE DEL MAR Town Hall in collaboration with EDUCAN, is offering a free online workshop to assist dogowners. “Torre del Mar is an animal-friendly town, particularly regarding dogs,” said Jesus Perez Atencia, the Teniente de Alcalde, who heads the local council. “Some years ago we were the first town with a dogs-allowed beach awarded a ‘Q for Quality’ certificate,” Atencia pointed out The council had always worked towards making people aware of the responsibilities of dog ownership, he added: “That’s why

during this lockdown situation we thought that this would be an excellent initiative for all the people who are living with their dogs.” The online course, which will continue throughout the State of Alarm’s enforced confinement, is aimed at improving the well-being of the dogs at a time when they could be affected by stress, anxiety and hyperactivity, Atencia said. 41 Club Nerja hold their AGM DESPITE lockdown, 41 Club Nerja held its Annual General Meeting in the middle of the fourth week of restrictions. A new chairman and committee were elected and they made plans for the coming year. The 41 Club is for past members of the Round Table, which has an upper age limit of 40. There are several 41 Clubs along the Costas and all exTablers are welcome to join or just drop in. Members support the activities and charitable efforts of their home Table but also enjoy meetings and the fellowship of like-minded people from other clubs. How did they hold their AGM without being arrested or denounced? Very simply, as they held a video conference in their own homes with the free computer programme Zoom. The virtual AGM ended with a toast when several glasses of beer were handed through the cloud, some miraculously turning into wine on the way. “Lockdown and life in general can be fun if you choose to make it so,” declared 41 Club Nerja’s new chairman Peter MacLeod. Homeless shelter closes

MOTRIL Town Hall has closed the homeless shelter at the municipal sports centre which opened when lockdown began. Approximately 30 people were living there when the shelter first

opened on March 19 but since then Social Services explained that some have been helped to return to their original places of residence where they can count on family or social support. Thanks to the coopera-

tion of the Asociacion Benefico Social Virgen de la Cabeza, those remaining were transferred to the Jesus Abandonado shelter where they will continue receiving assistance from Motril’s Social Action department.

Big build-up for Mercovelez project W O R K h a s re s t a r t e d o n c o m pletely remodelling Velez-Malag a ’s e m b l e m a t i c M e rc o v e l e z building. Local mayor Antonio Moreno Ferrer explained that the rehabilitated building will serve multiple roles and house very different kinds of activities for a capacity of 2,000. The finished building will even be big enough for band rehearsals, he revealed. “Now that State of Alarm restrictions on construction have been lifted, we can continue municipal activity, reactivate the local economy and guarantee

that this important and much-needed project can go ahead,” Ferrer said. The Mercovelez modernisation scheme is now in its first phase, which is the most complicated and expensive. The building is to have a new roof, woodwork, lighting and ventilation as well as a solar energy system that will need a total investment of €1.6 million, of which €1.1 million is coming from the provincial council, the Diputacion. “Rehabilitating Mercovelez and its future role will boost the municipal economy, generate employment and provide a social meeting place in the town centre,” Moreno declared.

Town hall helps to cut red tape

MOTRIL Town Hall is smoothing the way for local firms wishing to make online sales. They must first apply for an obligatory licence, and the town hall hopes this will help them to continue trading and make home deliveries, explained Motril’s Commerce department.

The State of Alarm’s requirements forced many non-essential businesses to close, but trading is still possible online, by phone or in writing with no limitation regarding products so long as establishments possess the necessary licence and respect social distancing regulations when making deliveries.

Permits can be obtained via Motril Town Hall’s website, by using a digital certificate and clicking on Medio Ambiente, followed by Licencias de Apertura and Solicitud comunicacion previa. Applicants will then find an online form which should be filled in and resent.

Lockdown breaker sea escape A MAN in Las Galletas in Tenerife resorted to a somewhat extreme measure to avoid being nicked by Guardia Civil, leaping into the sea to get away from officers. According to the Guardia a patrol based at Playa de las Americas came across the man on a public street. When they approached him to find out why he was not at home he shot off in the direction of the coast clutching a bag in his hand. He ignored the officers’ orders to stop and instead

NATIONAL POLICE are warning shoppers in the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca to IGNORE a supermarket scam offering €500, via WhatsApp and social media, to spend in Mercadona - claiming it’s a lie. The swindle, which it is feared could rip off thousands if taken seriously, is one of the lastest ‘phishing’ crimes aimed solely at getting hold of people’s personal and bank details. Toilet Paper Hoarder A MAN in the Australian city of Adelaide has tried to return thousands of dollarsworth of supplies he stockpiled in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, such as toilet paper and disinfectant gel, to a local supermarket. The director of the Drakes Supermarket, John-Paul Drake, claims that he bought all of the supplies in order to turn a profit by selling them online. Unable to do so, as supermarkets have been adequately stocked, the man has tried to return the 132 packages of toilet paper and the 150 onelitre bottles of disinfectant gel that he had previously purchased. According to Drake, the customer even needed a team of warehouse workers to help him load everything he bought, which cost almost AUS$10,000. When asking for the refund, he admitted that his eBay account had been suspended due to suspicions on his activity. The supermarket then refused to give him a refund and the director has taken the opportunity to make a video and send a public message regarding this issue. Drake says he “never thought that [he] would be in a situation like” this and that his customer’s behaviour has caused them to place new limits on refunds.

WHILST there are in theory strict controls imposed on member states by the EU with regards to support of local businesses it has decided as a ‘measure of last resort’ this may be overlooked if all governments agree. The intention is that with the drop in value of shares, wealthy foreign governments may attempt to take over weaker companies and this is something that the European Union wants to block. It therefore wants to allow tem­ porary state control by injecting funds into vital companies.

LEGALLY SPEAKING Can they issue fines? We live in a community where we have penalties for paying our fees late. Twenty per cent is added for late payment and access to the pool and garden area denied. These areas are enclosed and owners are is­ sued an electronic key. This key is blocked for late payers. As we have not­ ed here before, YOU AND THE Spanish community LAW IN SPAIN law prohibits com­ munities from imposing fines and surcharges on commu­ nity fees. Communities sometimes get around this by raising the fees and then offering a discount to all those who pay on time. The late payers must pay the full amount. This has the same effect and is legal as well. Cutting off access to the pool is another dubious area. The way to change anything in a community is to as­ semble enough votes and proxies to vote the change at the AGM. This exercise in basic democracy requires ef­ fort and determination. Spending down A NEW study by the University of Cambridge based on results of 1.4 billion credit card sales shows that spending in Spain has dropped by 49 per cent compared to the first quarter of 2019 and this is blamed on the lockdown.

Olive tree devastation A SHOCKING report from Holland’s University of Wageningen suggests that over the next 50 years, Spain’s olive trees could be deci­ mated by Xylella fastidiosa, a bac­ terial pest which could cost the country just under €17 billion if left unchecked. The effects of the bacteria means that the trees develop burned leaves, dry branches and the eventual death of the tree and since 2016, trees on more than 130,000 hectares in Spain have been affected. Telephone numbers required WITH effect from last Monday (April 20) train operator Renfe introduced personalised tickets for users of its AVE, Alvia and Euromed rail services as well as trains with reserved seats.

The intention is that passengers will be required to give telephone numbers when making reser vations so that the company is able to contact them in the event of a health alert or

any other problem with the service. Initially it will operate for passengers booking online directly with Renfe or through its App as well as station ticket offices.

Ceri Norman is crafty VERA and District Lions’ joint press officer Ceri Norman is using her time to make future plans for the club and to keep people informed about what it does and the wide area of the province it covers. Craftlover Ceri has also been busy making old-fashioned aprons and mop caps for a traditional English tea room she plans to run at the Lions’ Party in the Park fundraiser now due to be held later in the year, as well as crocheting blankets, baking, and walking round her garden in Arboleas for exercise. When lockdown is lifted a walk by the sea is top of Ceri’s list.

Claire Andrews, dog owner CLAIRE ANDREWS says she feels that she is lucky to be a dog owner, as she at least can have some outdoor exercise with her four-legged friend Jack during the lockdown. Claire became a widow four years ago, but says that she has still enjoyed her life on the Orihuela Costa and has made a lot of new friends. “Since losing my husband, getting involved in so many local groups has been brilliant for me, and one of the sad things of what has happened right now is that I can’t meet up with them.” “It’s the same for everybody, I suppose.”

Kate Kelly, Fuengirola HOW have you been coping with the lockdown? “I have been working from home which has been harder than usual as I also have to entertain my lively son. So, we have been doing lots of baking like chocolate cupcakes then we have been counteracting that by doing Joe Wicks exercises and yoga every day.” What is the first thing you will do when the lockdown is lifted? “Well... I would love to go to a chiringuito and have some nice seafood and a glass of Cava, but I would probably settle for a pint and a pork pie!”

I have got my dogs to keep me busy, and my family. “Netflix is a saviour, and I love reading. “First thing I will do when this is over is catch up with friends and book a flight.”

JITKA FAULL WAS born in the Czech Republic and came to Benahavis via London and Florida in 2014 having spent most of her life as an estate agent. Last year she took the plunge and set up her own agency Centrum Marbella catering for Czech clients thinking of moving to Spain. All was going well until the pandemic and business ground to a halt but she gets up at 8.20 every morning, exercises on her rowing machine, spends at least two hours emailing potential clients, she has discovered online quizzing and is currently reading three books at once as well as annoying her husband.

LUCY ROWAT GRANDE lives in Calpe, where she runs her business, The Bed Centre and a project called ‘Make A Smile.’ “Some of the things keeping me sane during lockdown are family WhatsApp groups, sharing old photos, getting old household jobs done, clearing and sorting for charity shops, making bread and marmalade, planting vegetable seeds, sewing masks and diong online workouts. “Online shopping has been a life-saver, but when lockdown finishes we all need to think about supporting our local businesses and charities.”

HOW have you been coping with the lockdown? “I still keep to a structured day but I have been hand-rearing three kittens a friend’s daughter found near the river. I have been keeping active by following exercise videos online and I have been studying to recertify my Addictions Therapy certificate.” What is the first thing you will do when the lockdown is lifted? “More than anything I miss human contact so I cannot wait to go for coffee and a chat with my friends. Also, I play Walking Football and am looking forward to training again.”

HOW have you been coping with the lockdown? “Normally I am home most of the time because of my husband Davey’s Lupus. I made some masks and gave them out and have been spending time on the roof terrace with our dog and kitten. I also started a WhatsApp

Lockdown group with my friends, it’s been really helpful to have support and a laugh.” What is the first thing you will do when the lockdown is lifted? “I think what I miss more than anything is going for a proper walk with our dog, Lola, and that is what I will do when we can.”

JODY SMART BUSINESSWOMAN and fundraisier, Jody Smart is spending lockdown with her family in the Costa Blanca. “We’ve lived in pyjamas and lounge wear, we’ve played family games, watched family movies and gone all out keeping fit. Oh yes and have eaten far too much. “I don’t think we’ve ever been in the house together ever for this long so it is most definitely a privilege.

“I think about what’s going on in the outside world and it makes me anxious, but I bounce back to keep the family together making sure fitness classes, set meal times are scheduled and routine is in place ... they love routine it’s been the key to keeping them focused.” Catching up with her parents and elderly nannies in the UK will be one of the things Jody will do after the State of Alarm.

LILLY VAN TONGEREN WAS born in Holland and spent most of her life there before moving full time to Elviria in 2012. She is retired and happy that with a pension she is able to live a comfortable life and things haven’t changed that much for her personally with the lockdown. She either owns or fosters a number of dogs and has a large garden for them to enjoy and apart from some shopping, she spends her time promoting the Triple

Sue Parmenter-Phillips on a mission to get fit COASTAL CLEANERS ANDALUCIA founder Sue Parmenter-Phillips is on a mission under lockdown. She is working out daily in her basement gym to get as fit and healthy as possible for scuba diving, as this will be the first year she will be leading dives and helping to train other divers. In the first four weeks of the State of Alarm she did 60 kilometres on her cross trainer, having not done any running before. Unsurprisingly Sue will be aiming to get back in the water to explore the underwater world and to encourage others to take up scuba diving as soon as it’s possible.

Havovi Rabadi getting fit HAVOVI RABADI admits she was initially worried when the State of Alarm came into force and about being stuck inside, but she soon found she could connect with other people at her Mojacar Playa complex and stay fit and active at the same time. Neighbour Sandra Brown came up with the idea of a daily keep-fit routine, and thanks to Sandra’s encouragement, every day Havovi and other ladies get out on their terraces at the same time for an hour’s session of dance and exercise together, albeit from a distance. Havovi is looking forward to being able to go out and meet up with the friends she is missing so much and enjoy a drink together, but not a hug or a kiss for some while, she adds regretfully.

WAS born in Gibraltar but spent most of her working life in London in media and retired to Estepona about five years ago. She likes the area and it is within easy driving distance to visit her 96-yearold mother on the Rock. She is bilingual and has been helping some expatriate children keep up their Spanish on FaceTime and after stocking up with Easter Eggs delivered 10 anonymously to local children, ringing on doorbells and walking off. Ophelia has just started cooking hot meals for a local charity and is looking forward to the freedom of being able to go out when she wants.

I had renewed my passport, which I'm still waiting for. “It’s difficult at the moment because my partner can’t work as he needs to apply to an HGV agency in England to start driving, but obviously

can’t get there at the moment, so we don’t have an income at all. I’m sure many are in the same position. “I've been making cards, candles, bath bombs and painting designs on roof tiles. When the weather permits, a bit of gardening. And I’m on my 11th book. “One of the first things I’ll do after lockdown, if my passport is here, is sign on with a new agency and get back to work.”

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT OBSERVING the Labour party, as they endeavour to turn this whole virus disaster into a political issue, really is quite pathetic. With their usual arrogant attitude, they continue to insult the intelligence of the public by insisting their efforts are merely to ‘assist the government’ and that they ‘only have the country’s wellbeing at heart.’ Utter bull. They and their new leader (who also needs to answer a few questions when this is all over!) are taking every opportunity to gain Brownie points by nit picking every single piddling fault they can find. Of course mistakes have been made. Of course, in hindsight, different decisions may have been more beneficial, but overall I believe that in this completely unprecedented event in our history, the government (minus its leader for most of the time) has done a magnificent job. most challenging periods ever. The logistical problems have been a nightmare. The economic and health issues something no government could ever envisage and I for one think they have risen to the oc-

casion most admirably; particularly in managing to strike the delicate balance between keeping a cool head and the creation of total panic! For the leftie whingers to keep trying to score political points is

a positive disgrace. Almost beyond belief they are now calling for the government to publish their plans for the country’s recovery when the nightmare is all over. Give us a break. I’m sure that post pandemic exit plans have been give serious reflection, but at this time the present problems must obviously take overwhelming priority. Endeavouring to deflect the government’s concentration by asking it to prematurely declare its future intentions is frankly beyond contempt. Just as predictable as the left trying to gain political points, up pop the usual suspects trying to turn it all into a racial issue. ‘Why’, they bleat, ‘are there more ethnic communities falling victim to the Corona virus than the indigenous population’? Well, let’s think… er, maybe it’s a racist virus? Well you never know do you? Give us a break. I suppose that

the situation wouldn’t have anything to do with the fact that most of the ethnic communities totally ignored the isolation and social distancing rules at the outset? Or that a number of Mosques stayed open. Or that some of the Imams were preaching that the disease was the wrath of Allah over the infidels and not an Islamic problem at all? Sometimes I really do despair of it all. I also think Trump had a point in suspending funds to the WHO. They did pander to China. The have ‘praised’ its efforts to control the virus. They did fail to admonish the Chinese hierarchy for withholding the facts of the plague for weeks before they had no choice. In my opinion both the WHO and the Chinese have great deal to answer for. HAVING THE TIME OF THEIR LIVES DACHSHUND: Is happy to have owners at home.

LAMBE-MURPHY AS if by Lambe-Murphy’s Law, it seems, not even the weather will let up. Since lockdown began, the sky has been grey and the rain abundant. Perhaps a reflection of the global mood. Then, I look at social media, and the sun is shining in Ireland and the UK. Friends post photos, wearing shorts and polo shirts, quaffing Pimm’s, as they lunch al fresco, on roof terraces, overlooking empty streets. Meanwhile, in Marbella, the weekly trip to the supermarket has almost become an occasion. As if we may meet the love our life, whilst choosing tomatoes. Or more likely, in the wine section. As the rain poured and temperatures remained humid, trying to select the right outfit for such an outing, took more than a few attempts. In the end, I found my late grandfather’s Barbour, an oddlooking rain hat, a fresh mask and gloves, and I was good-to-go. A simple jacket from the late 50’s, that I’m pretty sure, has seen many fun times. I know it has, since I started wearing it, many years ago. My grandfather was a wonderful man. Always wise, confident and happy. Always with a great sense of style. He lived a full life, was known to enjoy a proper lunch, and despite surviving the Second World War, also went on to survive my grandmother. Sadly, not in age, as he passed before her, but he survived life with a strong lady. Don’t get me wrong, she was a pretty fabulous lady, but she was very demanding, in that, she expected perfection at all times. I guess the apple didn’t fall far from the tree. As I queued, in a slow-moving line at the local Supersol, I felt the rain and it bothered me. Then, I thought of the great man who once wore the jacket. What would he do in challenging times like these? Without realising, I removed my shades and hat, looked to the sky, and let the rain run down my face. Feeling the rain, was a joy. It made me realise, I was outside! After a long week at home, I was lucky to be in line at the store. While we may believe we know best, we

ALL DRESSED UP: For the rainy weather. should remember those who know more. Not people who claim to know it all, but rather, those who have lived. Those who have survived experiences, we may never have to endure. Recently, my heart pounded, as I saw Captain Tom Moore on the news, raising millions for the NHS. Such an amazingly positive 100-year-old gent. Such an honourable man. His manner made me remember, to stop complaining and get on with it. Smile and be extra polite, to everyone we meet. Remembering my grandmother, I know that these days I care less about perfection, and more about my sanity. I’m sure she would disagree. You know what I mean, I tend to load the dishwasher, the morning after. I attempted to cut my hair, it looks bad. So, I wear a hat. Then again, I am just like my grandmother - as even if I must wear a silly hat, it has to be Prada.

NOT so long ago, I wrote about podcasts and playlists l a u n c h e d b y S p o t i f y, t h e w o r l d ’s l a r g e s t a u d i o s t re a m i n g c o m p a n y, t o a l l e v i a t e stress for dogs while their o w n e r s w e re a t w o r k . An owner of a dachshund in the UK recently posted on Twitter: “My dog has been so happy that everyone is home for quarantine that his tail has stopped working. The vet said he had sprained his tail from excessively wagging it!” An Instagram account has been set up so fans can follow her pet’s progress. Here in Spain, you can’t go out except to walk the dog. A friend has a dog; the neighbours don’t. The dog is exhausted. As for my parents’ dogs in the UK, they’ve just got used to a run in the back garden to do their early morning business and one big walk a day without the two shorter ones they’re used to. Though they’re disappointed at the reduction in passing ca-

nine traffic to bark at out of the front window, they’re lucky being in the country with its open spaces to run in, unlike pets in urban areas. Basically, they know only a few commands: stop that bloody racket (invariably ignored); come here (obeyed, unless there’s something much more interesting going on elsewhere); and NO (the ultimate tail-between-the-legs belly crawling fake apology). Everything else is a monologue ( ie my parents talking to themselves). Experts advising on home-schooling children and maintaining fitness levels recommend getting into strict routines during lockdown. Here again, my parents’ dogs love the new regime, apart from the stricter rules on eating ALL the food in their bowls and the 8pm clapping which wakes them up. But they’ll get used to it. I can imagine dog therapists will be kept quite busy with separationanxiety issues once owners are back at work and normality returns! ‘real-life’ conditions. They examined the effect of triclosan, the active antiseptic ingredient commonly used and tested 20 strains on how well it killed bacteria. They found triclosan had killed significantly more bacteria after nine hours or more, but not

during the short time required for hand washing. Then, they compared the ability of antibacterial and non-antibacterial soap to remove bacteria from human hands using 16 healthy adult volunteers and found ‘no significant difference’ between the two.

Monday April 13 saw one of the most chaotic White House coronavirus press briefings yet, with President Trump playing a campaign style montage to White House reporters and getting into a shouting match with a woman reporter from CBS after she asked him why he wasted a month before the pandemic exploded. I was absolutely gobsmacked by the President’s meltdown. President Donald Trump has led the way as a champion of hydroxychloroquine, branding the drug a ‘gamechanger’ without any proof whatsoever except saying he has spoken to some

unnamed person that it has helped. Many doctors have said that this drug can do more harm than good because of its side effects of damage to heart and vision. Yet every day he bangs on about it actually saying ‘what harm can it do?’ Eric Topol, director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute, said the promotion was ‘reckless, feckless and deplorable.’ Even his beloved and devoted follower Pies Morgan said Donald had gone too far. Everything Trump does, according to him, is ‘tremendous.’ I do not know how many times he uses that word in a press conference but it’s a lot! Everything he does, according to him, is bigger, better and greater than anyone else in the history of the world and he is not to blame for anything. The truth is he is to blame, not for everything, but sometimes you just have to put your hands up and say ‘you know what, I got a couple of things wrong. But I promise you I will learn from them and will make sure I learn from them.’ The chances of this happening with this narcissistic egomaniac is somewhere between slim and none. I can’t wait to see tonight’s episode of the Emperor’s New Clothes starring Donny Trump.

FINDING the right medication or combination of meds can be a long and tiring journey. The journey begins with making the decision to saying YES to trying medication and sticking to them! Then it can be a long process of finding what works and what really doesn’t. Bipolar disorder varies greatly from person to person, and so does the right medication. What works for one person may not work for another. My GP decided to start with what medication to prescribe based on the symptoms I reported to him and then make adjustments from there. It’s very important to be open and honest with your doctor so they are really able to help you. You should tell them about any side effects you experience, and whether or not you really did take your meds and if you think they working and why!! From my GP I was passed on to the Mental Heath support team, where I was assessed by a psychiatrist and psychologist twice a week to start with. I went through all three stages when I got my bipolar diagnosis… • DENIAL > I’m not ill, there is nothing wrong with me, I’m fine. I don’t need medication. I used to flush them down the toilet!! I was angry and hurt. • ACCEPTANCE > Nobody chooses to have bipolar. Nobody is to blame. Maybe this is why I have always been different? What if these pills will help me live a relatively normal life? • RECOVERY > Knowing that I do need medication to be ‘well’ along with certain lifestyle changes means I have not been sentenced this lifetime of suffering. So yes, medication can help but its no magical cure, self care, meditation, therapy and sleep are also so impor-

tant. Tracking your self care and moods will help you notice the earliest signs of a possible relapse. I have been on medication now for eight years yet I still have a problem with it, I tend to hide the fact that I have to take medication to be well. I’m actually scared of what I would be like, who would I be, if I wasn’t on them. But I have come to terms that I would rather take medication and feel ‘okay’ than to be riddled with pain, dark and suicidal thoughts and anxiety every day. My point is , NO I don’t believe in pushing someone into taking medication is the right way, but to say, that it’s important to be open to treatment, there’s no need to suffer in silence or to be proud. Just because you take medication it is not a sign of weakness. The bottom line is the right treatment can help restore some of your quality of life and allow you to feel healthy once again. I would like to say a massive THANK YOU to all of you who email in, I do love reading your letters. Just remember that you are not alone in this! A FEW weeks ago, I wrote about conspiracies. Blimey, the tin foil hat brigade have come out in force since lockdown - it’s never ending! T h e re h a v e b e e n s o m a n y m o re ‘theories’ since. Gives me plenty of fodder for another rant though! The latest ridiculous claim I’ve noticed doing the rounds is that Bill Gates predicted and planned the corona virus outbreak. Mainly because Gates did a talk in 2015 explaining that a highly infectious virus could be more deadly than war. I mean, come on, it’s not much to base a conspiracy on! It’s not like it hasn’t happened before! They say that Gates engineered the virus as a form of controlling the population. Also, that he’s profiting from a vaccine, which hasn’t even been developed yet! Firstly, why would he want to reduce the world’s population? It would be mean less customers for Microsoft! I’m yet to come across a viable motive for this. Then there’s vaccines, here we go again! More fuel for the anti-vaxxers. I don’t understand these people. There’s a

through fear of becoming Autistic. As I have mentioned before, I have Autism. I’m on the high-functioning end of the spectrum with Asperger’s. I don’t see it as a disability. In fact, if a ‘cure’ was offered to me, I wouldn’t take it. I love that I’m a different from most females. I wouldn’t want to change how I view the world with my eyes - it’s fascinating! To be told by anti-vaxxers that they’d rather have their children die of a preventable disease than be like me is, Quite Frankly, appalling. You can lead a wonderful life with Autism with the right understanding and support, especially if you find your right path. You cannot lead a wonderful life with death! I find these parents disgraceful and insulting. If you check out a list of famous people who have or are thought to have had Autism, they range from Einstein to Marilyn Monroe - hardly undesirables! I honestly think that isolation is giving people too much time to think. It was bad enough before! These people need to find something more constructive to do learn a new language, reorganise the house, write a book. There’s so many more constructive things to do than annoy the rest of us with conspiracies! Stop it. It’s silly.

Having time to change ROBERT SHALLIS DURING such unprecedented times, we are all undoubtedly experiencing some drastic changes in how we live. None of us could have predicted that only a few weeks ago, our everyday lives would be impacted in so many ways; physically, mentally and financially. Martin Luther King once said “If you can’t fly, then run. If you can’t run, then walk. If you can’t walk, then crawl. But whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.” That statement is certainly worth some thought. It is all too easy to bury one’s head in the sand and let the emotions of fear and worry render us stationary. It’s all too easy to buy into the drama of conspiracy theories and fake news, which in turn only adds to the negative energy around us.

TIME: An important thing to appreciate and focus on. So, to move forward, interestingly enough, we actually first need to take a small step back and be grateful for what many of us still have right now; health, family, friends. Acknowledging the good that’s still in your life, hard as it may seem at the moment, can

be uplifting. One important thing to appreciate and focus on, which so many of us have never had before, is ‘time.’ Time is the most valuable and precious asset you can acquire and it is our choice to do with it

Every day we hear of people stepping up with acts of kindness and of course the amazing heroic efforts of key workers and those in the health service, caring for others on a daily basis. Although, we are not all in a position to do this, but what we can do, is make the most of the time we have. We can take this time to reflect on our lives and make the changes we feel necessary. With accessibility to materialism taken away from us so suddenly, we could question if we really needed it in the first place, was it making us happy or did we just simply take for granted what we had before the world stopped? With every change, there also brings opportunity. Time being the opportunity in this case, enabling us to look at ourselves and ask; what have we learnt and what would we do differently next time. We could even ask ourselves honestly whether we are proud of how we have been living our lives. We have a chance to revaluate what really matters and to

make a fresh start once we are able to commence with getting back on track. It’s a window of opportunity to spend time with ourselves and decipher what is important in life and is it bringing a degree of happiness. We may not be able to change the current situation but we can certainly change our attitude around it and begin to focus on the positive. If not for ourselves we can hold that positive space for others who may need some encouragement and hope. Happiness has many factors, one of which is contributing to others which many of us have the time to do so at present. There are only so many tomorrows, so now is an ideal time to make a decision, to take action, make the change, move forward and become a better version of yourself. Once these challenging times have passed, it will be about the person you decided to become that will define you and make a difference not just to you but to those around you. DEAR Euro Weekly News, Should Spain ease lockdown restrictions? On my phone this morning was a survey to this effect. My view is proceed with great caution as we have come this far and it would be very much worse if we relaxed too soon. I have always regarded the volume of tourism in recent times to be one of the major threats to the planet and I feel this dreadful virus was spread globally in the main, due to this factor. Here in Spain, I commend the police diligence and the Spanish people for taking every step possible to heed the safety measures necessary and if, now, there is a glimmer of light ahead, please be sure. Nobody has died from being locked in, or up, or down... although like everybody it is a very lonely time and I am with the government and our town hall all the way in maintaining the present course of action. To those who choose to blame one man, Boris Johnson, name-calling and bigotry are not the way forward and certainly, the UK Prime Minister is hailed by all parties as having done all he could... it’s easy to sit back and criticise. OUR VIEW Deeper understanding IN theory, all of us are vulnerable to coronavirus, but in practice how well we fare has to do with pre-existing conditions that are not only medical but economic, social and political. Age was the first factor most of us heard about in the unequal impact of this virus. It seemed to affect older people the most and children hardly at all, with a lot of younger adults having mild cases. Then, March was full of stories of desperately ill and dying young people as cautionary tales warning that no one was guaranteed an exemption from this. The shutdowns that are meant to prevent its spread have wildly varying economic impacts. Some suddenly lost jobs. Some whose work was deemed necessary had to continue in the face of the danger of contagion - medical workers, firefighters, transport workers and food workers, from those on farms to supermarket stockers and cashiers. As schools were closed, the digital divide meant that more affluent families with computers, iPads and good internet connections had a very different home educational situation than families without these amenities. Some who live alone have been reporting devastating loneliness; people who live with others have reported everything from exasperation to fear. Warnings are emerging about a likely wave of mental health problems from these new situations. Domestic violence has risen dramatically in many places. Nearly everyone on Earth is, or will be, affected by this pandemic, but each of us is affected differently. Some of us are financially devastated, some are gravely or fatally ill or have already died. The pandemic is a spotlight that illuminates underlying problems. Taking care of each other begins with understanding the differences.

Naughty neighbours Dear Euro Weekly News, For weeks now, my Spanish neighbours have ignored the lockdown. It started when each day they invited in a man walking his two dogs. I hung a huge notice out of my bedroom window stating, in Spanish, “man with two dogs, two-metre distancing is the law.” Next day he arrived without his dogs. I resorted to taking photos. He hurled abuse at me as did the neighbours. Now, the son goes out aged about 50, unemployed, every day for about two hours. Easter Sunday the two granddaughters and their mother, visited, obviously to see their grandmother, their uncle and their father. Yes, I have photos. These people are endangering lives. Every day I hang out my notice, plus I now hang out a sign, draped with a black scarf stating the total deaths in Spain, this I obviously have to change daily. I cannot get through, on the phone to the Guardia, we are all helpless in this tragedy, especially when people like this do not self isolate. Every night I clap the carers, those Spanish neighbours never do. I am 75 years old, I have been out once shopping. I am in lockdown as required by this emergency Spanish law. I am proud to be a resident of Spain, Spain is saving my life, and I will survive, but will others with neighbours like mine? How many more will have to die because of this appalling attitude? A sour taste Dear EWN, Please allow me to share my nightmare experience with Orange the mobile and internet supplier. It started when I noticed I did not have an internet connection. I telephoned the English-speaking helpline (laughs out loud) and the agent said a technician would call me back, little did I know this would lead to a total of 25 telephone calls and speaking to 22 different people between Monday and Friday. From excuses of the Fraud Department cancelling my account to ‘the system’ doing it by itself, many dropped phone calls and even a trip into Fuengirola to an Orange shop and received a fine from the police for being out. I then spoke to a young Orange operator who called to arrange an appointment with the Tecnicos. As if by magic they arrived 30 minutes later and fitted a new router and explained at some point my landline number was changed as was the password to access wifi with my mobile. Orange cut my internet package completely without warning and without reason and appear to be useless at rectifying the problem causing days of stress and anger. Their efforts to solve the problem stemming from their huge blunder have been nothing short of a disgrace. Ronnie Waugh
