CORONAVIRUS has turned the world upside down. In Spain, as around the globe, governments and citizens are fighting a battle of the like they have never had to face before. This is an unprecedented public health, and also economic, crisis, which is having a major impact on all of our lives. One of the few positives to come out of these dark times is that regional, political and individual differences have been put to one side as the nation and its people unite and pull together for the common good. Even at such a significant time as Easter, where loved ones would normally be coming together, but are willing to put celebrations aside and enjoy the time in the best way possible, safe in the knowledge that we are doing it for the benefit of good health and for the safety of our friends and family. There is no pre-established rulebook on the best way to defeat Covid19, and the Euro Weekly News wants to thank the
respecting the lockdown restrictions we are all helping to stop the virus from spreading, to keep ourselves and others well, and to make the return to normality something we can all see on a near horizon. DIGITAL EASTER DIFFERENT: Spaniards cannot get out onto the streets to celebrate Easter the way they want to, but they can celebrate it online.
WITH everything going on in the coronavirus-ravaged world at present, Easter has got somewhat pushed to one side this year. All the normal excitement about the spectacular ‘Semana Santa’ processions through the streets of towns and cities across Spain is absent because they cannot happen, and there are no hordes of beach-hungry city dwellers heading for the coast for the long weekend. But the State of Alarm enforced confinement does not mean Spain is not celebrating Easter at all. It’s just that this year it is different: it is more of a digital version.
In many areas there are various initiatives to bring people together online at this important time of year. Local TV stations are broadcasting processions from previous years at the times this year’s events had been scheduled to take place. And in many areas the religious services are being streamed live, albeit services held behind churches’ and cathedrals’ locked doors. Coronavirus has stopped Spain from going out onto the street to celebrate Easter the way it does so spectacularly and uniquely. But the crisis has not done away with the spirit of Easter.

Sole service ON Sunday Pope Francis was the sole celebrant at Palm Sunday Mass in St Peter’s Basilica at the commencement of Holy Week, and the service took place without a congregation, which the Vatican press office said was a historical first for the Roman Catholic Church. The mass and Pope Francis was live streamed from the near-empty basilica. Only the Pope’s aides and a handful of invited religious guests were present. The invitees sat in the front pews of St Peter'’ keeping a safe distance apart.

In his homily, the Pope asked worshipers to devote themselves to service in this time of Covid-19. “May we reach out to those who are suffering and those most in need. RELIGIOUS CELEBRATIONS ALTHOUGH people in Spain will not be able to celebrate Semana Santa in their traditional manner, this is not to say they will lose their Easter spirit! Some neighbourhoods have resorted to their most social gatherings – balconies. This year religious
thrones and processions have had to be injected with a little originality and creativity. A group of flats in Cordoba played the traditional procession music as they paraded a makeshift throne across the flats over a washing-up line. Residents will have to conform to watching old processions on
their TV and take part in the broadcasted mass from the comfort of their homes. Other devout Spaniards have shown their support by hanging tapestries from their balconies. These banners depict religious imagery of the saints and virgins who will not be paraded on the streets this Easter.

The Masked Monarch Highway birth KING FELIPE VI visited an operational centre in the Madrid area that is coordinating the work of Spain’s armed forces during the State of Alarm. The monarch went to the Retamares base in Pozuelo de Alarcón, and he donned army clothing in addition to wearing a protective mask and gloves. The Armed Forces have named Operation Balmis as their deployment to various parts of Spain to reinforce the home confinement rules. Francisco Javier de Balmis y Berenguer was a military doctor born in Alicante in 1753, who then studied medicine locally. He was famous for bringing the smallpox vaccine to the Spanish empire at the start of the 19th century, and is credited in some quarters as saving millions of lives.

Digital dog show LOCAL charity Last Chance animal Rescue have come up with a novel idea to raise much-needed funds. Even during the lockdown, they have had no choice but to take on some desperate cases, and without being able to get adopted dogs and pups to their owners, the purse is empty. ON April 2, two Guardia Civil officers from Lugo assisted a woman who had gone into labour when she was travelling with her husband on the AG-64 close to Xermade. At around 7.30pm, the Guardia Civil observed the presence of a car parked on the side of the road and stopped to check if everything was okay and enquire about their parking. When the officers approached the vehicle, the partner of the woman was ‘visibly nervous’ and explained that his wife was inside the vehicle about to give birth. When informed, the officers immediately went over to help the mother who at this moment already had the baby in her arms. An ambulance arrived at the scene and immediately took care of the mother as they transported her to a medical centre. The officers escorted both the ambulance and the father’s vehicle as they went towards the hospital. The Guardia Civil has informed that the mother and daughter were taken to the Arquictecto Marquide de Ferrol Hospital in A Coruña and are both in good health. The Guardia Civil wanted to give thanks to the little Lara for ‘the smile’ which she provoked on the faces of public service officers, medical staff and more during these tough days.

Fire now out Birthday surprise UNDER CONTROL: Firefighters contained the blaze by mid-afternoon and was completely out before midnight. A FIRE which broke out in Adra’s Las Albuferas Natural Reserve on Sunday lunchtime was extinguished by last thing at night. Civil Protection volunteers were the first to get to the scene of the blaze, the local council reported, shortly followed by Poniente fire
brigade and Infoca firefighting teams. They had the flames under control by about 4pm and completely out by around 11pm. The fire affected around four hectares of undergrowth. The causes of the blaze are under investigation.
KINDHEARTED firefighters gave a young leukaemia survivor in Almeria City a birthday surprise he is not likely to forget. The team quite literally rose to the occasion, going up on the fire engine ladder to the window of the family’s fourth floor apartment to personally deliver Miguel a toy fire truck to celebrate turning four. It was a lovely gesture to soften the blow that the big party the little lad’s parents had been planning for their son could not go ahead because of the State of Alarm restrictions. Almeria Mayor Ramon FernandezPacheco explained on social media that Miguel’s mum and dad had wanted to make a big deal out of the little boy’s special day this year because he had spent his third birthday in hospital fighting leukaemia. Sadly coronavirus got in the way of the celebration plans, so mum and dad got in touch with the Almeria firefighters to see if they could arrange a birthday congratulations for the young fire service fan. LIKE everywhere else in Spain, Mojacar cannot stage Easter processions on the streets this year, but the local authority’s Culture department and Tourist office are running a campaign to encourage people to celebrate as best they can under
the lockdown restrictions. Culture councillor Raquel Belmonte is encouraging locals to send in videos of their homestyle Semana Santas so they can be posted on social media and shared by the municipal Guadalinfo computer centre.
Videos should be no more than a minute long, and can be either fun or serious, but must have an Easter theme. Anyone who records a video they want to share should send them to culturamojácar@ gmail.com.

Reasons for hope IN the most encouraging news for days in Almeria, there have been zero reports of new coronavirus infections or deaths in the province over the last 24 hours. VERA Council has set up a dedicated coronavirus crisis commission to oversee security in the municipality. The Covid-19 Security Coordination Committee is aimed at facilitating cooperation and coordination between the municipality’s Local Police and State law enforcement bodies during the health emergency. The move complies with the Interior Ministry’s Operative Coordination Centre’s order to create the commissions in localities with Lo-
cal Police forces for as long as the State of Alarm continues. Vera Mayor Jose Carmelo Jorge Blanco is coordinating the committee, and is responsible for organising meetings at least once a day so a report can be sent to the provincial Government delegation. The reports give information on the number of officers testing positive for Covid-19 and action take, such as quarantine. Also included will be details of specific actions taken to
guarantee the functioning of essential services. This refers to issues like protecting health centres and centres for the supply of essential goods, as well as the transport and distribution of products, and guarding public service infrastructure. The committee must also report on actions to ensure compliance with the State of Alarm, providing information on matters like the number of sanctions or arrests for restrictions violations.

MAYHOOLA, the parent company of fashion brands Valentino and Balmain, is donating €1 million to Madrid’s IFEMA, the makeshift hospital built to treat coronavirus (Covid-19) patients. “The objective of this temporary healthcare facility is to accommodate 1,300 patients suffering from Covid-19,” said Mayhoola, in a

Message of hope SEVEN-HUNDRED children across the world have come together to form a virtual choir in a bid to spread hope and solidarity amid the coronavirus emergency. The choir sang Nessun Dorma, the famous aria from Puccini’s opera Turandot. The initiative was directed by the association Europa InCanto, who invited children from Italy, Europe and across the world to participate in the virtual event. As the group Europa In-

Jobless increases THE coronavirus crisis added 8,685 people to Almeria’s jobless total in March, figures from the Employment Ministry reveal. The provincial unemployment rate shot up by a massive 15.48 per cent last month to 64,796. All sectors were hit, but its services suffered the most, with an additional 6,583 people out of work. The CSIF Almeria trade union said the province had been put back three years. Union president Juan Cabezas commented that when adding in the workers affected by ERTE temporary employment regulations, a mecha-
nism which allows companies to suspend job contracts or to reduce employee working hours due to force majeure in order to relieve financial tension, Almeria had gone back a decade. CSIF pointed out that employees on temporary contracts or in an uncertain work situation were most affected. “Unfortunately Covid-19 has also infected the province’s economic flows and the figures will be worse in April, hence we have to be prepared to have one of the worst productive crisis in recent years in Almeria,” Cabezas warned.
Fountain closed off THE coronavirus crisis has now forced the closure of Mojacar’s public fountain, traditionally the very heart of village life. “Due to the Covid-19 situation, for reasons of public safety and in regard to the declared State of Alarm, the au-
thorities have been forced to close off access to the public fountain to prevent the gathering and movement of people in public places,” the local council has posted on Facebook, adding, “We are sorry for the inconvenience this will cause.”

Easing pressure MOJACAR Council has announced it is aiming to ease the financial pressure on residents and businesses to help them cope financially with the negative impact of the State of Alarm lockdown on the local economy. Mayor Rosa Maria Cano has suspended the payment of certain municipal taxes and fees. The local authority said in view of the current situation, and with the aim of “avoiding harming the rights and interests of municipal citizens,” there would be an ongoing plan to implement further measures which will have to be agreed at a council plenary meeting. Champ polices the streets WORLD canoe champion Saul Craviotto has returned to his former job as a policeman to help out during the coronavirus pandemic. With the Tokyo Olympics
on hold, Craviotto, 35, asked if he could return to his career in the National Police force, and is now carrying out duties in Gijón, commending members of the public for showing “a
good degree of responsibility with the confinement.” Speaking to El Comercio, Craviotto said he is very comfortable doing his job as a police officer and thanked his colleagues for the warm welcome. “I can’t ask for more,” he said. A kid’s life under lockdown CHILDREN in Tijola are being encouraged to write about their lives under lockdown in a council-organised initiative to mark World Book Day. The idea is to give children and teenagers an
opportunity to explain how they are using their time during the weeks of enforced confinement and to express how it is making them feel. The council said the project is also designed at making youngsters aware of what it means to go outside, to be able to go to school and to spend time with friends and family. Participants have until April 23 to send in their entries, which should be no more than two pages long. They can also send in drawings to go with their work.
Entries should be photographed, the images clearly showing the name and age of the young author and the text, and sent to the Tijola Guadalinfo centre at guadalinfo.tijo la@guadalinfo.es, or via a message on the centre’s Facebook page. The local authority has promised a gift for every youngster who sends in an entry, to be handed out “when everything goes back to normal.” The council also explained that all the entries will go into a book for the municipal library.

Forced to move WHAT Vera Council described as the “risk of collapse” of the municipal Guardia Civil station means the force has had to move in with Local Police, a shift which has not gone down well with everyone. It has, the local authority admitted, caused a certain level of “unease” among Local Police officers given it coincides with the health crisis. But the council insists it was an unavoidable decision. The administration said there is “serious structural damage” to the 60-year-old Guardia station building and that remaining there would have represented “an imminent threat” to officers. The Guardia’s plan is to build a new station on a plot ceded by the local authority. In the meantime the force has set itself up at the Local Police base, because, Vera Public Safety councillor Alfonso Garcia maintained, the facilities are “the most suitable due to space and safety and communications equipment.” He appealed to officers to demonstrate the “solidarity and comradeship which the Local Police has always shown in an exceptional situation,” stressing the move is “provisional.” According to the council the nineyear-old Local Police station building is “currently underused.”

Eggscellent EASTER is coming, and although the majority of us will be stuck in the house during isolation, it can give us hours of fun to enjoy with the children. Painting Easter eggs is fun and easy to do, lots of people buy egg decorating kits, but you can make beautiful Easter eggs with supplies out of your own cupboard. Once your eggs are hard-boiled place them in cups filled halfway with hot water, add 1 teaspoon of vinegar and one teaspoon of food colouring. Now simply place the egg in the colour you want, leave it for five minutes and when you lift it out you will have a perfectly dyed egg. Before you start dipping, there are lots of ways to create different patterns
on your eggs. Using a white crayon, write a message or draw a design on the egg before you dip it - when it comes out of the dye the wax will remain white, highlighting the design. Or you can create stripey designs on your egg by placing rubber bands or tape around your egg before dipping, when you raise it from the dye and remove the bands your egg will have stripes where the bands were. Once you've lifted your eggs from the dye, place them gently in the empty egg carton to dry. Once they're dry you can keep the fun going by hiding them around the house for a hunt.

Family time ENFORCED family time may seem a little daunting but by putting it to good use you may manage to encourage some life values within your children you may not have previously had the time to. Take time to do something like cooking, colouring or even listening to music with your children. These are fantastic things to be doing together and will go such a long way. Art can be so powerful because it makes you escape for a little bit, it puts you in that mindfulness zone, and time passes so quickly. As adults, if we are doing this ourselves, then we are showing good habits to our children. One really positive thing that will come out of this is that young people can become more independent in choosing when and what to learn. If we create children that love learning, they will automatically find new things to occupy their time with and to be inspired by. What is extremely important is to carve out family time. Why not set a time in the day when everyone’s devices go away, try playing a board game or watching something appropriate on Netflix together.

Weekend jail Success Story release denied
CORONAVIRUS patients are beginning to leave the ICU and return to the normal wards. Each patient is a small victory for the medical staff and a reminder to keep up morale. An extraordinary case is 23-year-old Adrian. This young man arrived at the Costa del Sol Hospital, Marbella on March 18 and he spent 10 days in the ICU. He left on Sunday 29 and his mother, Isabel, admitted “She was very scared” for her son. Adrian is without voice because of the inflammation caused by the ventilator as he is not fully recovered. Isabel recalls crying heavily when medical professionals video-called her to show her son no longer needed a ventilator to breathe. He was finally able to take a clear breath and so did she.

Spain holidays pushed back BRITISH tour operator Jet2 Holidays has announced it has pushed back the sale of packages to Spain until midJune in the face of the situation created by the coronavirus crisis. “We have taken the decision, against our will, that it would be reasonable not to plan operations until June 17,” it said. Although they have not ruled out bringing forward the sale of Spanish package holidays if the restrictions on flights are removed.
Morale booster A SWEET letter from a schoolkid “to all the policemen” putting themselves out there on the frontline of the battle against coronavirus has given the force a welcome morale boost. Third grade Alejandra tells the police how brave they are for being out on the street, writing, “I want to be like you when I’m older.”

Alternative Easter processions ADRA local council has come up with an idea to ensure there is something of the essence of Easter on the town’s streets. A line of Local Police, Guardia Civil, Civil Protection and municipal service vehicles, along with ambulances from the health centre, are doing a nightly drive to the ‘Semana Santa’ stations of penance. The local authority said the idea was to express solidarity with the municipal brotherhoods and to thank residents for staying at home. The vehicle proces-
sions set off from the entrance to the parish church to the corresponding station of penance every evening at 8.15pm, along with the sounds of Easter playing from a megaphone. The council is also emitting by megaphone at certain times in the morning and evening recordings of some of the most typical Easter band music which in normal events would accompany the brotherhoods’ processions of religious figures mounted on elaborately decorated platforms.

Military on patrol THE military have been out on the streets of Mojacar to help ensure full compliance with the lockdown restrictions. Military personnel have been working in collaboration with Local Police officers to check vehicles at strategic points, including the main roundabout where the road from the village connects to the main coastal strip. The Guardia Civil and police have also stepped up controls day and night on key access roads to coastal municipalities to make sure people are not tempted to try and get to their Costa Almeria holiday homes for Easter. Helping hand on household bills MACAEL Council will pay half the electricity bills of elderly people on low incomes during the State of Alarm, Mayor Raul Martinez told Spanish radio. Explaining the aim is to help the municipality’s senior citizens get through the coronavirus crisis confinement in the home, Martinez said the greatest possible flexibility would be applied in terms of accessing the assistance. The mayor pointed out that the enforced confinement is particularly hard on elderly people living on small incomes given it has been on the chilly side in recent weeks and they have had to have on their heating.

the truth. Of course, as businesses each thinks (although we know) that it is better than the other but at the end of the day, if you value a free press then we want to see all in our sector successful and we certainly don’t wish to see those working at Olive Press losing their jobs or being placed in difficult financial situations. We all take a different view of our priorities and at EWN we have a long track record of being part of an expatriate community here in Spain which is why we have run fundraising campaigns for charities (not ourselves) and try to promote life here rather than simply looking to point fingers and cause controversy. Our income is down considerably, but the proprietors are determined to do their best to keep our family of workers employed, our suppliers paid and our readers entertained by putting their house on the line, not begging for charity

THE Ritz Hotel has become a sur vivor of the coronavirus crisis as the day it closed under the lock down it was sold for an undis closed sum to a Qatari invest ment fund which has indicated that it will pay all of the existing staff in full until the hotel can re open. The previous owners, the reclusive Barclay Brothers are thought to have expected to sell the historic property for far more than the £80 (€88) million they paid for it in 1995.

Double Taxation Agreement THE Government of Gibraltar has entered into a double tax agree ment (DTA) with the United King dom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and is looking to extend such agreements further with other coun tries. DTAs are treaties between two or more countries to avoid internation al double taxation of income and property. The main purpose of any DTA is to divide the right of taxation between the contracting countries, to avoid differences, to ensure taxpayers’ equal rights and security, and to pre vent evasion of taxation.

IN an attempt to ensure that all of its suppliers are not financially af fected by the State of Alarm, su permarket chain Mercadona has obtained credit lines of €2 billion (€500 million from each of four main Spanish banks). Although income for most su permarkets is up during the cur rent crisis, Mercadona wants to pay its suppliers immediately, rather than in the normal 40 or so days following receipt of invoices. The banks are content as they know that Mercadona sales will come in to underwrite the loans.

No dividend SPANISH bank Santander has cancelled payment of its 2019 and 2020 dividends which it says will release €90 billion which may be used for loans for companies and individuals in financial distress. In the meantime, the bank is also reviewing future strategies.

irrelevant. The postings on social media, which they try so hard to suppress, has more than proved to the free thinking world that they knew about this virus long before the knowledge was finally made public. We know of at least two young medical practitioner
whistle blowers, which were suppressed and later ‘conveniently’ died of the virus. They also must have known more than the rest of us when they hastily erected two hospitals containing 4,000 beds all those weeks ago. No, I’m afraid these arrogant officials would rather put millions of lives in jeopardy than lose face, and have now proved to the world just how dangerous they actually are. Not only have they had the gall to try and shift the blame onto others, but have set their zombie like workforce the task of manufacturing millions of protective and medical testing apparatus - to actually sell to people suffering and dying from the very malady they have inflicted. Plus, to make matters even worse, the first huge batches of these materials are actually of dubious quality. Bit like most of the rubbish they have been foisting on us through the utter-
ly substandard tacky shops, that have sprouted like bean shoots over the last few years. Well, when it’s all over, I for one would like to see them issue an acceptance of responsibility along with an unmitigated public apology. Right now, once they’ve got it right, they are morally obliged to manufacture and export vast quantities of medical equipment, free to the world they have blighted with their horrifying virus. It has just come to my attention they have, almost beyond belief, actually reopened a number of the live animal market. You really couldn’t make it up. WHAT’S THE FIRST THING YOU’LL DO? GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY IT’S a question that arose again, and again lately. While these days of isolation make us q u es t i on l i f e o n m a n y l e v e l s . S u d d e n l y, w e a re f o rc e d to rethink what we value, and urged to think of life after the current sadness. As the days went on, I noticed my life change totally. Used to sleeping early and waking, really early, to run on the beach. Days were busy, filled with engagements. Now, I rise by 10am, go to bed around midnight, to read and stare at my phone, until around 3am. Followed by a day trying to tame my hair. I have no desire to work-out, even though, I know I'm lucky, having a house on the beach, with a pool. I should be making the most of my time. The guilt of this alone, consumes me. I look at online fitness videos and resent the trainers. Life sure has changed. Then again, we are all in the same boat, and again I am lucky, as my family are healthy at the time of writing this. Honestly, the days have blurred into one, and I find myself almost surprised, when I realise it’s Friday. As if the weekend is upon us. All I seem to do is watch BBC News on loop, and wonder if another martini, is one too many. Which makes me wonder, why are we watching country, after country, roll out a delayed lockdown? Why not watch Italy, watch Spain, and act immediately? Which in turn, makes me angry. As much as I love my dog Henry, he has now somehow attached himself to me, with no signs of backing off. We sleep together. He sits on my knee, as I sip my first espresso. I go upstairs, he’s behind me. Of course, he eats most of my meals. Mornings, are spent drinking endless coffee, and gardening. Lunch remains, as always - long
HENRY: Has now attached himself to me. and fun. Mid-afternoon, I light the fires, close the shutters and somehow it feels like January. All very hum-drum, yet somehow, lovely. It’s as if we’ve been thrust back in time to a simpler life, when spending more time at home was the norm. Yet still, my mind kept questioning what I wanted to do, once I was free to do so, and then it came to me. Now, I can’t be sure if it was the wine, or laziness, but I’ve decided that what I want, is more of this quiet life. We race around so much, in the ‘real world,’ per haps it’s time to slow down on many levels. One thing is for sure, I want my fitness back. For my sanity, if nothing else. Stay safe, until we meet again. x

OUR VIEW Long-lasting actions WITHOUT a doubt 2020 will be a recession year in every advanced economy. Most affected countries have already adopted strict lockdown measures. The economic statistics already coming in are abysmal and it is almost impossible for most people to work or spend as much as they used to. Understandably, the first economic policy response was: do something, do it big and do it fast. The first priority of these policies should be to support the health sector, quickly increasing the capacity of beds, staff and ventilators, mobilising the production of the valuable equipment and nurturing innovation in treatments and vaccines. Secondly, to preserve well-being, facing a disaster that affects everyone, governments must provide social insurance to help the most vulnerable make it through. Another goal is to have the economy ready to go back to work with a minimal shortfall in productivity when the lockdown period loosens. The fear is that companies that cannot make payments during the freeze will close their doors for good. Some workers who are laid off now will later have trouble finding the same job that suits them and pays well. To keep businesses afloat, almost every country has deferred some, or most, tax payments. That is an effective and simple way for the government to give credit. Finally, policymakers must stimulate the economy as soon as we can get back to work. For all countries, the disruption in the production and supply chains might lead to large increases in prices. This biggest trade-off that moderate policymakers face today is to separate the temporary exceptional measures from permanent long-lasting revolutions.

Troubled mind Hi Leapy, As you know, here, in Spain, we are in a lockdown which is severely upheld by the army and the police and has just been extended to the middle of April, possibly, beyond. My mind is very confused by this virus. We know for sure that it began in China where we are told, it arose from a market where cats, dogs, snakes and bats are slaughtered and sold in appalling conditions. The virus was identified in December last year, or earlier, but not announced to the rest of the world for at least two months or more. Around the world where it has spread, there is now a desperate shortage of relevant medical equipment, drugs, sanitisers, masks, gloves and clothing. The reason there is such a shortage of those items worldwide is due to the virus which began in China, and because most countries get their supplies of these products from guess where - China! This is because stricken countries that are now desperate for such products ceased manufacturing them a while ago because China does it cheaper. Desperate countries are now buying masses of those products from China again, where, according to today’s news, their lockdowns are being eased and the Ground Zero markets where the virus began are now back in business as usual and booming! Meanwhile, many countries, including the world’s economic leaders, will take 10 to 20 years to fully recover from the effects of the virus and the massive cost of the support they have had to give to businesses and their citizens. If you follow my thoughts on this subject you may also feel that this entire economic and political merry-go-round needs serious investigation and a major rethink on how we and other countries handle the production of such critical products in future, which, in my opinion, the NHS should play a significant role in that. This is my troubled mind talking while trapped in this unprecedented, worldwide lockdown. Keep well, keep washing your hands and always look on the bright side of life. (Monty Python). Funnily enough, the Bible teaches nothing about abortion other than how to do it (‘Life begins at birth’ etc), and marriage equality harms no-one (nor is this a Biblical issue, either). This is just another individual using his personal interpretation of his religion to suit his own bigotry.
Keir Starmer accuses the government of making ‘serious mistakes’ over the Coronavirus crisis in the UK Ian Billing Well he is right. Johnson had known what was coming since January and did absolutely nothing. Whether you agree with Starmer’s timing is another matter, but what he says is true. The PPE and testing fiasco is down to the government. They even ‘war gamed’ it in 2016 and then suppressed the report and ignored all its findings. Maybe ‘being nice’ about it, even at a time of crisis, is the wrong thing to do. You don’t escape scrutiny, even in hard times.

SINCE the start of the pandemic, we haven’t heard much from the FarRight. The usual loud-mouthed media names like rent-a-gob, Katie Hopkins and professional millionaire bigot, Tommy Robinson, have been very quiet too. Maybe they’re still blabbering on, but perhaps there’s more important things for the media to focus on right now? Who knows? But their absence from the UK media spotlight has been a welcome change. Then Vox, the far-right Spanish political party, pop up. They recently proposed that Spain should end universal healthcare. Meaning all non-residents will have to pay for healthcare if they get ill with the Corona Virus! That’s not only inhu-
mane, but also dangerous. If those people can’t pay, they would be left out in society to infect many others! Quite Frankly, it’s a ridiculous suggestion. But hardly surprising from the FarRight! We’ve also been warned by the Italian Premier, Giuseppe Conte, about the possible rise in Nationalism in the country. As anger at the EU’s response to the crisis grows, whatever problems Italy have getting extra EU funding right now, turning to Nationalism isn’t the answer. Nationalism does have a habit of rearing its ugly head after times of crisis and
‘The weirdest thing he’s ever seen’ MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man WELL here we are - day gawd knows what of the lockdown - and I’d like to tell you all the amazing things I have achieved during my confinement. I’d like to, but I can’t because I have done sweet Fanny Adams. I’ve watched all these inspirational people on TV doing yoga, dancing, making incredible stuff out of, well mostly, insides of 200 toilet rolls. As I’m writing this some geezer is about to show me how to make gardening stuff out of some recyclable plastic bottles and other assorted bits and bobs that I don’t actually have. I live in an apartment and I’m not even allowed in the garden! I’m going to share a secret with you. On March 22 the clocks went forward. I have a clock by the side of my bed and I haven’t been arsed to change it yet. I’m waiting till I’m really bored and that will become the highlight of my day, maybe my week, who knows. Every day my phone is busy with jokes and pictures
all my good friends want to share with me. Some are great, some are absolute nonsense. Anything over a minute I probably won’t watch. Oh and please stop with the 5G conspiracy theories which, on one video I watched, turned out to be someone trying to sell crypto currency. On the plus side I’ve checked the mileage on my car and I’m now getting four weeks to the gallon on my fuel consumption. I went through my man drawer and found lots of wires and chargers. Some of the leads were still in the original plastic. How can you possibly dispose of something that’s never been opened? The four odd flat battery things might be useful and for some insane reason I found myself seeing if I could charge my Nokia 3120. Oh and the spare key for a car I sold in 1997 that must be useful I’m sure. Here’s something that is going to put everything into some kind of perspective. Willie Nelson, who is 86, has had four wives, seven children, 350 albums and his own line in marihuana. On a show the other day he said this is the weirdest thing he’s ever seen and, believe me, he’s done some weird stuff. I have to go now because I have lots of things I’m nearly going to do today. Or I might just find another box set to watch.

By the time Hitler came to power in January 1933, one in three Germans were unemployed. Jews were portrayed as sub-human and a threat to the economic future of the country. We all know what happened after that. So many say, ‘Never again.’ Yet the
same patterns of blame have repeated themselves over the last century. Experts believe this will be the biggest financial disaster since the Great Depression. It will be testing times. There are dark forces out there that will try and exploit this situation for their own agendas. No matter how tough things get, blaming minorities isn’t the answer. Most of us reading this newspaper are immigrants ourselves. We could find that we’re the ones being blamed for hardship. It’s not hard to imagine that there will be resentment if we’re financially stable. I believe we should treat others how we’d wish to be treated, as we could easily end up the refugees. I think now is the time we drop the hatred and resentment of immigrants and refugees, that we’ve seen so much of in recent times. We all need to work together as a globe to get through this. From a safe two metres’ distance apart though!

Writers like me are used to sitting for hours alone at a computer so isolation isn’t such a problem. AN UNBALANCED LIFE AND TALKING BADLY TO YOURSELF your life seems to be filled with chaos therefore you start to tell yourself what you dislike about yourself. Focus on the here and now - You cannot control what will happen tomorrow, nor can you change what happened yesterday! The more you focus on the here and now, the fewer thoughts you will have on the past or the future. 3. Let go on control One of the hardest yet one of the best things to do. Understand that you can only control you. You
can’t only control your own thoughts and feelings but you also have the ability to change it! If you have a negative thought, ask yourself, what physical evidence do I have that makes this thought true? Follow this up with, how do I want to feel right now? 4. Break old habits - You have to stop doing what you have always been doing. If it doesn’t serve you, it needs to be removed. By simply breaking rigid or thoughtless habits one by one, you will begin to erode those negative patterns and beliefs. Most importantly, be kind and patient with yourself. You were put here for a reason. Love every inch of you, including your flaws.

Reality of Bipolar MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED WHO I am and what I have are two very different things. Who I am is a survivor. I battle this ‘something’ and strongly, I battle something that lives in me and pretends to be me in moments of vulnerability. It can creep up on me at any time, I can be having dinner with the family, laughing and joking and suddenly this dark cloud comes over me. I can be enjoying a film and all of a sudden I can’t watch it any more. I can be in a restaurant having dinner and have the sudden urge that I need to get out of there and go back home. But the truth that I realised which keeps me going is that it DOES NOT make me who I am. Sure, it tries to claim itself to be me every now and again, trying to pull me further down in to the depths of despair. But over time, that only did one thing - it began to reveal itself for what it was. I see it now. A shapeless dark shadow ‘thing’ that dwells in a place I hold sacred trying to take over, MY HAPPINNESS. I asked myself once, who am I if I cannot trust my own mind…? Who is the person asking this question, in this moment, if not something separate from that vile thing? Who is the person that wants to and does fight it every day, to find any
amount of happiness and purpose in living? And the answer to those questions is … Me! Not bipolar. And that is truth behind it all. Keep fighting it, and the more you fight the more you separate yourself from it. You are not bipolar, you have bipolar. Yes, there will be days you lose the fight and fall hard. But every day you try to fight it inside, you claim back a little piece of your identity from the clutches of the nasty illness. A place within where we feel real, a place within that we can call home… no matter how small it is, and no matter what the threats are. This crazy ride that bipolar disorder takes me on, is like picking a side which by then you’re long lost. It breaks your life into a million pieces. Struck by a knife, thrown at me like darts, most of the time I feel like am actually drowning . How do I survive this roller coaster ride when most of the time I don’t feel in control of the drive… Make peace with the night and hold on tight to the ride, away from the ride breaks a new dawn and a new day to fight again. It is not about winning the fight every day. The point is to keep fighting it. You are not the illness, the illness is a part of you. It’s okay to not be okay. Advertising Feature I WAS driving to work last week, and I looked around me to see nothing but a ghost town in front of me. I got to wondering is this what the world wars would have been like, isolation. Rations, lockdowns, strict guidelines of how to conduct your life, a complete sense of loneliness ? That evening I called my 97-year-old Nana who has witnessed most things during her time. This is what she told me: “I have never been through or endured anything like this in my lifetime. I am 97 years old; I live alone, I am in isolation as I am high risk, I am not allowed to go outside or let anyone into my apartment, I have limited funds and resources. I normally rely on my family and care workers to get my shopping, call around and help with my exercise, prepare my meals, help with cleaning and washing. Now all of this interaction has been stripped back to the bare minimum. I used to go down to the recreation room to socialise with the tenants here most evenings, in fact it was one of the things that kept me sane, having that human contact. It was something to look for-

ward to. Recently someone I have been friends with for over 50 years has been taken into hospital with, what is, I believe to be, this virus. I cannot tell you how frightened and alone I feel. I worry about dying. Who will find me? Who will even know I have gone? Will anybody be able to attend my funeral? Can I be cremated? If I wasn’t doolally before all this began, I certainly will be after it has all passed.” I reassured my 97-year-old Nana that this is hard for everyone, but that isolation is for the best and working for Golden Leaves I was able to ease her concerns, by putting contingences in to place for finding her, one call to us and everything is taken care of as per her wishes, a small group of family members could attend her service and as she met the cri-
teria she could indeed be cremated. Her worry for her family burden and financial cost taken care of there and then by putting a plan into place. I went on to say: “Nana, you need to keep in isolation to keep safe so you can reach that 100-year mark and get your letter from the Queen.” She laughed and told me that she had been putting off making her funeral arrangements for years as she believed it to be bad luck. “Now for my own peace of mind I need to sort out my affairs. Please can we sort out my funeral arrangements? Just so that if anything does happen, I will know that you do not have to worry about finding the money, especially, in the current climate and I will know that I will be taken

They now, more than ever, have a genuine fear of passing away and not having all their affairs in order and uncertainty of what will happen to them during this State of Alarm. It is so important to take that pressure and financial burden away from your family who, at this time, cannot even get to you or your remaining partner/spouse to support them if they are in a different country.

BARRY DUKE IN A bid to distance myself from ever-more-alarming Covid-19 news, I went in search of a vintage music channel and found Montreal’s ABC 50’s on the Internet. The first song I heard played was a massively popular number dating back to 1944 called Accentuate the Positive. So I took on board its core message - ‘You've got to accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative’ - and started a list of things that have brought some measure of pleasure into my tiny quarantined world over the past week. Top of the short list was the disappearance of a bloody great box that was partially blocking the entrance to our apartment. I’d accepted it on behalf of the concierge of our apartment block because he

No, came the reply. But they promised to deliver the order the next day. And they did. My joy knew no bounds, as I was down to my last teaspoonful. Third on my list was Brexit. Wow, I thought, something has finally come along to stifle the incessant noise about the UK’s departure from the EU. This pleased me so much that I posted a message on a Facebook page called Brexpats In Spain saying ‘One good thing about Covid-19. No-one’s talking about Brexit any more ... until yesterday.’ That referred to a Business Insider report that said ‘The UK logistics sector has demanded that Prime Minister Boris Johnson extends the Brexit transition period, due to end in Decem-
ber, warning that the ‘once in a lifetime’ Coronavirus pandemic must be dealt with first.’ With luck Brexit won’t ‘be done’ by the end of the year as Bojo promised. Fourth is work. For more than 20 years, being self-employed, I have worked from home. So being confined, and having to work eight or more hours a day means that I’m not lumbered with long, tedious hours of doing nothing. Fifth is cash. I’m not spending money on anything but essentials, so I’m better off to the tune of about €200. And as I’m not a great one for boozing at home, my alcohol intake has dropped by about 90 per cent, and I’ve managed to shed a few surplus kilos. And if I were to abide by a Covid-19 directive issued on March 31 by the mayor of Benidorm to avoid lifts and only use the stairs, I’ll be down many more kilos as I live on the 31st floor!

AFTER 18 years trying for a baby through IVF, a couple is spending lockdown with their ‘miracle’ identical twins after becoming a family at long last on Mother’s Day. Mick, 53, and Ruth O’Malley, 39, from Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, underwent the IVF process five times before the joyous arrival of their boys at Scunthorpe General Hospital. Ruth said “we feel truly blessed to have met them after waiting for such a long time,” reports Daily Mail UK. “If you had told me that 18 years after I was told I couldn’t conceive children naturally, I would be back in Scunthorpe General Hospital having twins - on Mother’s Day, no less, I wouldn’t have believed you.” Ruth and Mick, one of 10 children, met on the Golden Wonder factory floor in 1999 and were married three years later. They were eager to have children, but soon after tying the knot, they were told it would only be possible
