Even at such a significant time as Easter, where loved ones would normally be coming together, but are willing to put celebrations aside and enjoy the time in the best way possible, safe in the knowledge that we are doing it for the benefit of good health and
for the safety of our friends and family. There is no pre-established rulebook on the best way to defeat Covid-19, and the Euro Weekly News wants to thank the President of the Spanish government Señor Pedro Sanchez for everything he and his administration are doing to keep up us all safe. We appreciate that his
priority is public health and taking the right steps to enable Spain to tackle this emergency situation and move forward again as soon as possible. EWN also wants to thank each and every person in Spain for playing their own vital role in this completely changed society. By staying indoors and respecting the lock-

DIGITAL EASTER DIFFERENT: Spaniards cannot get out onto the streets to celebrate Easter the way they want to, but they can celebrate it online.
WITH everything going on in the coronavirus-ravaged world at present, Easter has got somewhat pushed to one side this year. All the normal excitement about the spectacular ‘Semana Santa’ processions through the streets of towns and cities across Spain is absent because they cannot happen, and there are no hordes of beach-hungry city dwellers heading for the coast for the long weekend. But the State of Alarm enforced confinement does not mean Spain is not celebrating Easter at all. It’s just that this year it is different: it is more of a digital version.
In many areas there are various initiatives to bring people together online at this important time of year. Local TV stations are broadcasting processions from previous years at the times this year’s events had been scheduled to take place. And in many areas the religious services are being streamed live, albeit services held behind churches’ and cathedrals’ locked doors. Coronavirus has stopped Spain from going out onto the street to celebrate Easter the way it does so spectacularly and uniquely. But the crisis has not done away with the spirit of Easter.

Sole service ON Sunday Pope Francis was the sole celebrant at Palm Sunday Mass in St Peter’s Basilica at the commencement of Holy Week, and the service took place without a congregation, which the Vatican press office said was a historical first for the Roman Catholic Church. The mass and Pope Francis was live streamed from the near-empty basilica. Only the Pope’s aides and a handful of invited religious guests were present. The invitees sat in the front pews of St Peter'’ keeping a safe distance apart.

In his homily, the Pope asked worshipers to devote themselves to service in this time of Covid-19. “May we reach out to those who are suffering and those most in need. May we not be concerned about what we lack, but what good we can do for others,” said the Pope.
RELIGIOUS CELEBRATIONS ALTHOUGH people in Spain will not be able to celebrate Semana Santa in their traditional manner, this is not to say they will lose their Easter spirit! Some neighbourhoods have resorted to their most social gatherings – balconies. This year religious
thrones and processions have had to be injected with a little originality and creativity. A group of flats in Cordoba played the traditional procession music as they paraded a makeshift throne across the flats over a washing-up line. Residents will have to conform to watching old processions on
their TV and take part in the broadcasted mass from the comfort of their homes. Other devout Spaniards have shown their support by hanging tapestries from their balconies. These banners depict religious imagery of the saints and virgins who will not be paraded on the streets this Easter.

The Masked Monarch Highway birth KING FELIPE VI visited an operational centre in the Madrid area that is coordinating the work of Spain’s armed forces during the State of Alarm. The monarch went to the Retamares base in Pozuelo de Alarcón, and he donned army clothing in addition to wearing a protective mask and gloves. The Armed Forces have named Operation Balmis as their deployment to various parts of Spain to reinforce the home confinement rules. Francisco Javier de Balmis y Berenguer was a military doctor born in Alicante in 1753, who then studied medicine locally. He was famous for bringing the smallpox vaccine to the Spanish empire at the start of the 19th century, and is credited in some quarters as saving millions of lives.

Digital dog show LOCAL charity Last Chance animal Rescue have come up with a novel idea to raise much-needed funds. Even during the lockdown, they have had no choice but to take on some desperate cases, and without being able to get adopted dogs and pups to their owners, the purse is empty. ON April 2, two Guardia Civil officers from Lugo assisted a woman who had gone into labour when she was travelling with her husband on the AG-64 close to Xermade. At around 7.30pm, the Guardia Civil observed the presence of a car parked on the side of the road and stopped to check if everything was okay and enquire about their parking. When the officers approached the vehicle, the partner of the woman was ‘visibly nervous’ and explained that his wife was inside the vehicle about to give birth. When informed, the officers immediately went over to help the mother who at this moment already had the baby in her arms. An ambulance arrived at the scene and immediately took care of the mother as they transported her to a medical centre. The officers escorted both the ambulance and the father’s vehicle as they went towards the hospital. The Guardia Civil has informed that the mother and daughter were taken to the Arquictecto Marquide de Ferrol Hospital in A Coruña and are both in good health. The Guardia Civil wanted to give thanks to the little Lara for ‘the smile’ which she provoked on the faces of public service officers, medical staff and more during these tough days.

SELF-EMPLOYED APPEAL SANTA POLA Council wants the Madrid gove r n m e n t a n d t h e re gional Valencia administration to give ‘serious’ help to selfemployed people and businesses in the area. The council met with local business representatives, and they agreed to join forces to lobby for greater assistance to be given once the State of Alarm period finishes.

Virus Flight Alert A BRITISH woman has made an appeal for passengers on a flight to the UK to get themselves checked out for Covid19, after three members of her family contracted the virus. Alex Twidal took to social media to ask for anybody who flew home to Leeds-Bradford Airport from Alicante-Elche airport on Friday, March 20, to seek medical help. The flight number was
FR9078 and it took off at 7.55pm. Alex’s post on Facebook revealed the seriousness of her family situation: “They have come back with coronavirus, which two of them are in hospital trying to fight. I honestly cannot tell you how heartbreaking this is for me and the family. If you were on that flight PLEASE get checked out.”
The strong view from business owners was that self-employed people who cannot ply their trade at the moment, should get a three-month break on paying taxes they owe for the first quarter of this year. They also called for a tax moratorium in the autumn for the self-employed that are still working, and a payment delay for all local business taxes until the summer.

Police Concerns ALICANTE police union representatives have called for a better shift system to minimise the exposure of their members to possible coronavirus infections. Unions have been talking with Alicante City Council after four officers tested positive for Covid-19, whilst at least two dozen of the force had to go into self isolation. The authority proposed a work pattern where officers were to work 12 hours a day for seven consecutive days, and than take a fortnight off. Unions rejected the idea, meaning that officers are still working seven days on and seven days off in eight-hour shifts, or five days on and two days off.
Gowns Get Escorted A RELAY of Guardia Civil officers criss-crossing over Spain escorted a supply of hospital gowns from the Portuguese border all the way to Elche. The lorry carrying 150,000 disposable gowns was accompanied by Guardia vehicles, as it went through several provinces. The journey started at Verin in Ourense Province, and stopped off at a hospital in the Madrid region to offload a small part of the consignment. The final part of the journey saw Guardia officers based in Alicante take over the escorting duties at Albacete all the way through to the Vinapolo Hospital in Elche. One hundred and forty thousand robes were unloaded with some of the supplies going to Torrevieja Hospital.
Masking Up HUNDREDS of face visors that offer protection against the coronavirus have been bought by San Miguel de Salinas Council. Eight-hundred units have been distributed amongst different groups of people in the municipality that have direct contact with the public. The cost of the visors has been reduced thanks to a sponsorship deal with a local telecommunications company. Councillor Nerea Gracia said: “We’ve distributed the visors to Local Police, civil pro-

Prison For Lockdown Breaker A TORREVIEJA man has been jailed after breaking the State of Alarm confinement rules on six separate occasions. The 22-year-old had already been fined four times, and arrested once by the Guardia Civil for being out of his house for no good reason. He was charged with an alleged crime of serious disobedience.

A judge granted him bail, but the man did not seem to learn from his experience. Just hours later, Guardia officers spotted him outdoors, and chased him for 10 minutes on foot and in a patrol car. Another serious disobedience charge was slapped on the man again, and his second court visit saw him denied bail.
Doorstep Deliveries THE Vega Baja Hospital Pharmacy service is now delivering prescription medicines to the homes of patients with serious ongoing conditions. The Orihuela Health Department says that the Outpatient Pharmaceutical Care Unit (UFPE) is phoning people whose prescriptions are coming up for renewal. In normal times, they would
have either had to go to their local health centre or even to the Vega Baja Hospital in Orihuela. The calls that are being made explain the way that the new home service will work, and to arrange a time for the medication to be delivered. The aim is to reduce the possibility of the coronavirus being spread at health facilities in the Orihuela area.

WADDLING AROUND: The ducks were returned to the river. A FEMALE duck and her children took advantage of Orihuela s quieter roads during the State of Alarm to go for a waddle around parts of the area. The ducks left their usual home of the River Segura, and even went into a store during their sojourn. The family went through Duque de Tamames and up Avenida Marques de Molins before deciding to say hello to a few surprised shoppers. The Local Police were called and officers returned the ducks to the river at a spot close to the Ociopia shopping centre.

Empty Fridge attack A MAN has been given a restraining order after he attacked his mother for not stocking up the refrigerator. The 49-year-old lives with his mother and sister in El Palmar, Murcia. The woman told the Guardia Civil that her son had an alcohol problem and that she wanted him to get medical treatment. She was punched several times after her son had opened up the fridge and found nothing in it. Her daughter arrived back home after going out to the supermarket

ATM Crooks Caught TWO men have been arrested in Alicante on suspicion of carrying out 60 cashpoint scams across the country. The two men, aged 43 and 44 of Algerian and French nationalities, are said to have netted €50,000. The National Police said that the men would watch their victims, predominantly elderly, as they withdrew cash from ATMs making a note of their PIN number, before ‘getting hold of the card’ by distraction or violence. They would then make cash withdrawals.

Better Disposal Call ORIHUELA Council has appealed for people not to throw disposable gloves onto local streets and pavements. The authority has reported a significant rise in gloves having to be scooped up by council workers in their cleaning rounds, especially close to supermarkets. Exercising Lockdown EL CAMPELLO Council is keeping people fit with an online fitness regime during the State of Alarm, which got over 30,000 people logging in during the first 10 days. Yoga and Pilates sessions are so far proving to be the most popular. The daily exercises, led by the Municipal Sports Schools, are held at 11.00am and at 7.00pm (Monday to Friday), simultaneously through the Facebook pages of the town hall of El Campello and El Campello Fitness. A council spokesman said: “The best way to overcome confinement is to get involved in the sessions, which are also a great way to start and end the day.”

Extra Service THE Guardia Civil arrested an 18-year-old shop assistant for selling a lot more than food at a Torrevieja grocery store. The Dominican national was detained during a routine inspection during the
State of Alarm. Officers noticed that she was nervous and they searched the kitchen where they found quantities of cocaine and viagra pills. There was even a ledger with a list of deposits made by clients.

No Stopping A 31-YEAR-OLD Spaniard led Local Police on a merry dance around
Mazarrón after refusing to stop for them. The driver skipped a checkpoint on the D-4 highway in the La Cañadica urbanisation area, and a chase over several kilometres started involving three police cars. Officers caught up with him and he was charged with breaking State of Alarm rules, as well as being found in possession of an imitation firearm.

A 40-year-old Spaniard is being investigated over an alleged crime of serious disobedience after he continued to run his facility behind closed doors. Neighbours tipped off the authorities that people were coming and going from the premises in breach of the lockdown law. Guardia officers staked out the building and spotted a stream of visitors entering it after they

Almost Ready WORK on an emergency field hospital for Alicante Province is scheduled to finish this Friday (April 10). The structure has been erected next to Alicante General Hospital and will accommodate around 400 patients during the coronavirus crisis.
The temporary facility has been fully equipped with isolation units, as well as separate reception and triage areas. Two other field hospitals have been built at Valencia and Castellon, at a total cost of just under €5 million.

Angry With Life A MAN who threatened dog walkers with a BB-gun has been arrested in Valencia City. Passers-by, especially those exercising their pets, had verbal abuse hurled at them from the 53-year-old man’s balcony. The irate resident also took pot shots with his gun at pigeons and road signs. The bizarre behaviour continued for several days until neighbours called the National Police and said they they saw the man “shooting at people.” Besides arresting the man, officers seized two BB-guns and some pellets.

RNA Torrevieja Donations THE Royal Naval Association (RNA) Torrevieja branch were recently able to make a series of donation presentations to local charities, before the State of Alarm rules took effect. Individual cheque handovers took place to MABS Cancer Support in San Javier as well as the Torrevieja homeless charity Reach Out, and AFA Torrevieja Alzheimer’s. IN TROUBLE: Bar owner is still doing business.
A TORREVIEJA bar owner is in trouble for continuing to do business in breach of the State of Alarm rules. The man literally operated behind closed doors, as customers got in by kicking the front shutters twice as a code to gain access. Guardia Civil officers decided to check out the bar for themselves, after getting complaints that illegal serving was continuing. They even took a video of an elderly man walking his dog who used the kicking code to quickly get into the premises, with the shutters being pulled
up in response. Primed with the evidence, officers went into the bar and found that a coffee maker was on, as well as spotting a bottle of alcohol on the bar. The owner and customer were detained by the Guardia, and face charges over breaking the confinement laws under the current State of Alarm. It’s the first incident reported in Torrevieja of a bar trying to continue operating during the crisis, with the vast majority of offences in the area relating to people being out of their homes for no good reason.

Eggscelle EASTER is coming, and although the majority of us will be stuck in the house during isolation, it can give us hours of fun to enjoy with the children. Painting Easter eggs is fun and easy to do, lots of people buy egg decorating kits, but you can make beautiful Easter eggs with supplies out of your own cupboard. Once your eggs are hard-boiled place them in cups filled halfway with hot water, add 1 teaspoon of vinegar and one teaspoon of food colouring. Family time ENFORCED family time may seem a little daunting but by putting it to good use you may manage to encourage some life values within your children you may not have previously had the time to. Take time to do something like cooking, colouring or even listening to music with your children. These are fantastic things to be doing together and will go such a long way. Art can be so powerful because it makes you escape for a little bit, it puts you in that mindfulness zone, and time passes so quickly. As adults, if we are doing this ourselves, then we are showing good habits to our children. One really positive thing that will come out of this is that young people can become more independent in choosing when and what to learn. If we create children that love learning, they will automatically find new things to occupy their time with and to be inspired by. What is extremely important is to carve out family time. Why not set a time in the day when everyone’s devices go away, try playing a board game or watching something appropriate on Netflix together.

La Liga Hope For May
JAVIER TEBAS: Is hopeful La Liga will finish the current season. TOP flight football could return to Spain on May 28 under the best possible circumstances, according to La Liga president, Javier Tebas. All Spanish football has been postponed indefinitely due to the pandemic, but Tevas has held up some hope that matches might be picked up at the end of May, if progress in fighting the spread of the coronavirus goes well. Last week, a senior Spanish TV executive suggested that July might see the resumption of La Liga, with games played
behind closed doors. Tebas said that clubs could lose up to a billion euros, mainly from television rights, if the season is scrapped. He added that the earliest possible resumption date could be May 28, which has been discussed with Europe’s football governing body, UEFA. Spanish clubs are still heavily involved in the financially lucrative Champions and Europa Leagues, which are run by UEFA. Tebas said that he is not contemplating the worst case position of La Liga not finishing the current season.

Recycling Replacements ORIHUELA Council has taken delivery of 80 new high capacity rubbish containers to replace those that were damaged in last September’s storms. They will be used for the disposal of paper and cardboard, which will be recycled. The containers will be placed on local roads in areas where there is the greatest demand and where previous units were damaged. The 80 new bins add to the total of almost a thousand containers that Orihuela’s refuse department has bought as replacements since the autumn. He was released on bail and faces a possible charge of disobedience or resistance. The incident happened at the supermarket branch on Plaza Circular. National Police officers arrived to see him scrapping it out with a security guard on the floor.
The customer had been asked to put some gloves on by shop staff to help reduce the chance of spreading the coronavirus, but re-
sponded by saying “that he did not feel like it.” The irate man refused to calm down and he was promptly arrested.

JOBLESS figures for the Vega Baja region rose by almost 2,000 people in March. with the spike caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The area’s official unemployment total stands at 27,800, according to the Valencian Employment Service. The biggest rise in the Vega Baja area was caused by 1,061 workers signing-on from the service sector, with 574 people being laid-off from the construction industry.

Champ polices the streets WORLD canoe champion Saul Craviotto has returned to his former job as a policeman to help out during the coronavirus pandemic. With the Tokyo Olympics on hold, Craviotto, 35, asked if he could return to his career in the National Police force, and is now carrying out duties in Gijón, commending members of the public for showing “a good degree of responsibility with the confinement.” Speaking to El Comercio, Craviotto said he is very comfortable doing his job as a police officer and thanked his colleagues for the warm welcome. “I can’t ask for more,” he said. Success Story CORONAVIRUS patients are beginning to leave the ICU and return to the normal wards. Each patient is a small victory for the medical staff and a reminder to keep up morale. An extraordinary case is 23-year-old Adrian. This young man arrived at the Costa del Sol Hospital, Marbella on March 18 and he spent 10 days in the ICU. He left on Sunday 29 and his mother, Isabel, admitted “She was very scared” for her son. Adrian is without voice because of the inflammation caused by the ventilator as he is not fully recovered. Isabel recalls crying heavily when medical professionals video-called her to show her son no longer needed a ventilator to breathe. He was finally able to take a clear breath and so did she.
Spain holidays pushed back BRITISH tour operator Jet2 Holidays has announced it has pushed back the sale of packages to Spain until midJune in the face of the situation created by the coronavirus crisis. “We have taken the decision, against our will, that it would be reasonable not to plan operations until June 17,” it said. Although they have not ruled out bringing forward the sale of Spanish package holidays if the restrictions on flights are removed.
Morale booster A SWEET letter from a schoolkid “to all the policemen” putting themselves out there on the frontline of the battle against coronavirus has given the force a welcome morale boost. Third grade Alejandra tells the police how brave they are for being out on the street, writing, “I want to be like you when I’m older.”
She adds, “thank you so much for all the great work you are doing and for putting yourselves at risk in this way,” explaining that when she goes out on her balcony to take part in the tribute to essential service workers “I am clapping for you too.” The police posted a thank you to Alejandra for her letter on social media.

Giving Thanks A VIDEO has been made by Orihuela Council’s commerce department to show support for local businesses that have been badly hit by the State of Alarm restrictions. The video has been posted on the commerce department’s social networks like Facebook, and features food, stationery, and home delivery businesses adapting to the situation, and showing their backing for colleagues who have not been that fortunate. Commerce councillor, Víctor Bernabéu, said: “We value local traders and we want to remind everybody in the area that when restrictions are lifted, all businesses will reopen for people to use.”

Surplus Boost ORIHUELA Council says that it will spend some of its €19.1 million budget surplus on helping people in the area hit by the coronavirus. Mayor Emilo Bascunana said that the national government allowed councils to spend up to 20 per cent of any surpluses to deal with the crisis. It means that Orihuela has a maximum of €3.8 million available, but the mayor did not commit to a specific amount.

Of course, as businesses each thinks (although we know) that it is better than the other but at the end of the day, if you value a free press then we want to see all in our sector successful and we certainly don’t wish to see those working at Olive Press losing their jobs or being placed in difficult financial situations. We all take a different view of our priorities and at EWN we have a long track record of being part of an expatriate community here in Spain which is why we have run fundraising campaigns for charities (not ourselves) and try to promote life here rather than simply looking to point fingers and
cause controversy. Our income is down considerably, but the proprietors are determined to do their best to keep our family of workers employed, our suppliers paid and our readers entertained by putting their house on the line, not begging for charity from the community that they attack on a regular basis! At the same time we will continue to try to assist all of those who are raising money for those in poverty or need as well as supporting our friends in the animal charities so that those who are in desperate straits are taken care off one way or another. THE Ritz Hotel has become a sur vivor of the coronavirus crisis as the day it closed under the lock down it was sold for an undis closed sum to a Qatari invest ment fund which has indicated that it will pay all of the existing staff in full until the hotel can re open. The previous owners, the reclusive Barclay Brothers are thought to have expected to sell the historic property for far more than the £80 (€88) million they paid for it in 1995.

Double Taxation Agreement THE Government of Gibraltar has entered into a double tax agree ment (DTA) with the United King dom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and is looking to extend such agreements further with other coun tries. DTAs are treaties between two or more countries to avoid internation al double taxation of income and property. The main purpose of any DTA is to divide the right of taxation between the contracting countries, to avoid differences, to ensure taxpayers’ equal rights and security, and to pre vent evasion of taxation.

Global organisations such as the OECD and G20 continue to hold tax transparency, administrative coop eration and good governance as im portant agendas in the field of taxa tion and vital characteristics of any mainstream tax jurisdiction. As Spain in particular has in the past accused Gibraltar of being a tax haven this is an example of the sig
nificant progress made in the last 12 months in repositioning Gibraltar’s international tax presence. A government release declared that ‘the strategy to cement our po sition as a credible finance centre avoiding both the pitfalls identified with blacklisted jurisdictions in addi tion to the associated consequences and sanctions is continuing. ‘Resources have already been de ployed for the necessary preliminary studies on how best to expand Gibraltar’s network of treaty part ners in the future; something that this agreement has definitively paved the way for.’
IN an attempt to ensure that all of its suppliers are not financially af fected by the State of Alarm, su permarket chain Mercadona has obtained credit lines of €2 billion (€500 million from each of four main Spanish banks). Although income for most su permarkets is up during the cur rent crisis, Mercadona wants to pay its suppliers immediately, rather than in the normal 40 or so days following receipt of invoices. The banks are content as they know that Mercadona sales will come in to underwrite the loans.

No dividend SPANISH bank Santander has cancelled payment of its 2019 and 2020 dividends which it says will release €90 billion which may be used for loans for companies and individuals in financial distress. In the meantime, the bank is also reviewing future strategies.

blame others for this vicious pandemic of death - which undoubtedly began in the Wuhan area of their country. Whether it was from one of their despicable, cruel and utterly repulsive ‘live animal markets,’ or leaked from some experimental laboratory, is
irrelevant. The postings on social media, which they try so hard to suppress, has more than proved to the free thinking world that they knew about this virus long before the knowledge was finally made public. We know of at least two young medical practitioner
whistle blowers, which were suppressed and later ‘conveniently’ died of the virus. They also must have known more than the rest of us when they hastily erected two hospitals containing 4,000 beds all those weeks ago. No, I’m afraid these arrogant officials would rather put millions of lives in jeopardy than lose face, and have now proved to the world just how dangerous they actually are. Not only have they had the gall to try and shift the blame onto others, but have set their zombie like workforce the task of manufacturing millions of protective and medical testing apparatus - to actually sell to people suffering and dying from the very malady they have inflicted. Plus, to make matters even worse, the first huge batches of these materials are actually of dubious quality. Bit like most of the rubbish they have been foisting on us through the utter-
ly substandard tacky shops, that have sprouted like bean shoots over the last few years. Well, when it’s all over, I for one would like to see them issue an acceptance of responsibility along with an unmitigated public apology. Right now, once they’ve got it right, they are morally obliged to manufacture and export vast quantities of medical equipment, free to the world they have blighted with their horrifying virus. It has just come to my attention they have, almost beyond belief, actually reopened a number of the live animal market. You really couldn’t make it up. Advertising Feature I WAS driving to work last week, and I looked around me to see nothing but a ghost town in front of me. I got to wondering is this what the world wars would have been like, isolation. Rations, lockdowns, strict guidelines of how to conduct your life, a complete sense of loneliness ? That evening I called my 97-year-old Nana who has witnessed most things during her time. This is what she told me: “I have never been through or endured anything like this in my lifetime. I am 97 years old; I live alone, I am in isolation as I am high risk, I am not allowed to go outside or let anyone into my apartment, I have limited funds and resources. I normally rely on my family and care workers to get my shopping, call around and help with my exercise, prepare my meals, help with cleaning and washing. Now all of this interaction has been stripped back to the bare minimum. I used to go down to the recreation room to socialise with the tenants here most evenings, in fact it was one of the things that kept me sane, having that human contact. It was something to look for-

ward to. Recently someone I have been friends with for over 50 years has been taken into hospital with, what is, I believe to be, this virus. I cannot tell you how frightened and alone I feel. I worry about dying. Who will find me? Who will even know I have gone? Will anybody be able to attend my funeral? Can I be cremated? If I wasn’t doolally before all this began, I certainly will be after it has all passed.” I reassured my 97-year-old Nana that this is hard for everyone, but that isolation is for the best and working for Golden Leaves I was able to ease her concerns, by putting contingences in to place for finding her, one call to us and everything is taken care of as per her wishes, a small group of family members could attend her service and as she met the cri-
teria she could indeed be cremated. Her worry for her family burden and financial cost taken care of there and then by putting a plan into place. I went on to say: “Nana, you need to keep in isolation to keep safe so you can reach that 100-year mark and get your letter from the Queen.” She laughed and told me that she had been putting off making her funeral arrangements for years as she believed it to be bad luck. “Now for my own peace of mind I need to sort out my affairs. Please can we sort out my funeral arrangements? Just so that if anything does happen, I will know that you do not have to worry about finding the money, especially, in the current climate and I will know that I will be taken

They now, more than ever, have a genuine fear of passing away and not having all their affairs in order and uncertainty of what will happen to them during this State of Alarm. It is so important to take that pressure and financial burden away from your family who, at this time, cannot even get to you or your remaining partner/spouse to support them if they are in a different country.

OUR VIEW Long-lasting actions WITHOUT a doubt 2020 will be a recession year in every advanced economy. Most affected countries have already adopted strict lockdown measures. The economic statistics already coming in are abysmal and it is almost impossible for most people to work or spend as much as they used to. Understandably, the first economic policy response was: do something, do it big and do it fast. The first priority of these policies should be to support the health sector, quickly increasing the capacity of beds, staff and ventilators, mobilising the production of the valuable equipment and nurturing innovation in treatments and vaccines. Secondly, to preserve well-being, facing a disaster that affects everyone, governments must provide social insurance to help the most vulnerable make it through. Another goal is to have the economy ready to go back to work with a minimal shortfall in productivity when the lockdown period loosens. The fear is that companies that cannot make payments during the freeze will close their doors for good. Some workers who are laid off now will later have trouble finding the same job that suits them and pays well. To keep businesses afloat, almost every country has deferred some, or most, tax payments. That is an effective and simple way for the government to give credit. Finally, policymakers must stimulate the economy as soon as we can get back to work. For all countries, the disruption in the production and supply chains might lead to large increases in prices. This biggest trade-off that moderate policymakers face today is to separate the temporary exceptional measures from permanent long-lasting revolutions.

Troubled mind Hi Leapy, As you know, here, in Spain, we are in a lockdown which is severely upheld by the army and the police and has just been extended to the middle of April, possibly, beyond. My mind is very confused by this virus. We know for sure that it began in China where we are told, it arose from a market where cats, dogs, snakes and bats are slaughtered and sold in appalling conditions. The virus was identified in December last year, or earlier, but not announced to the rest of the world for at least two months or more. Around the world where it has spread, there is now a desperate shortage of relevant medical equipment, drugs, sanitisers, masks, gloves and clothing. The reason there is such a shortage of those items worldwide is due to the virus which began in China, and because most countries get their supplies of these products from guess where - China! This is because stricken countries that are now desperate for such products ceased manufacturing them a while ago because China does it cheaper. Desperate countries are now buying masses of those products from China again, where, according to today’s news, their lockdowns are being eased and the Ground Zero markets where the virus began are now back in business as usual and booming! Meanwhile, many countries, including the world’s economic leaders, will take 10 to 20 years to fully recover from the effects of the virus and the massive cost of the support they have had to give to businesses and their citizens. If you follow my thoughts on this subject you may also feel that this entire economic and political merry-go-round needs serious investigation and a major rethink on how we and other countries handle the production of such critical products in future, which, in my opinion, the NHS should play a significant role in that. This is my troubled mind talking while trapped in this unprecedented, worldwide lockdown. Keep well, keep washing your hands and always look on the bright side of life. (Monty Python). Funnily enough, the Bible teaches nothing about abortion other than how to do it (‘Life begins at birth’ etc), and marriage equality harms no-one (nor is this a Biblical issue, either). This is just another individual using his personal interpretation of his religion to suit his own bigotry.
Keir Starmer accuses the government of making ‘serious mistakes’ over the Coronavirus crisis in the UK Ian Billing Well he is right. Johnson had known what was coming since January and did absolutely nothing. Whether you agree with Starmer’s timing is another matter, but what he says is true. The PPE and testing fiasco is down to the government. They even ‘war gamed’ it in 2016 and then suppressed the report and ignored all its findings. Maybe ‘being nice’ about it, even at a time of crisis, is the wrong thing to do. You don’t escape scrutiny, even in hard times.

speak these words to your best friend? Would you tell your best friend they’re ugly or fat or worthless? I bet the answer is no! So why do you speak so badly of yourself?? The answer is... UNBALANCE!! When you are unbalanced in life, you begin to feel overwhelmed, your life seems to be filled with chaos therefore you start to tell yourself what you dislike about yourself.
Here are six signs that confirm that your life is unbalanced: 1. You react or even over react to people or situations that are out of your control. 2. You feel that you have ongoing health issues such as, fatigue, headaches, anxiety. 3. You feel that life is just ‘happening to you’ and everything is at the mercy of chance.
4. Everything in your life feels impossible to achieve and you lack any motivation. 5. You attract all of the wrong people to you (negativity breeds negativity). 6. You’re too tired to recognise or enforce your own personal and emotional boundaries. How can you restore your inner balance? Here are some tips and techniques to help you: 1. Slow down - Re-establish that sense of control by slowing down. Whilst it may feel as though you are not being productive when there’s so much to do,
you’ll actually accomplish much more in less time and in a more pleasant way. 2. Focus on the here and now - You cannot control what will happen tomorrow, nor can you change what happened yesterday! The more you focus on the here and now, the fewer thoughts you will have on the past or the future. 3. Let go on control One of the hardest yet one of the best things to do. Understand that you can only control you. You can’t only control your own thoughts and feelings but you also have the ability to change it! If you have a
negative thought, ask yourself, what physical evidence do I have that makes this thought true? Follow this up with, how do I want to feel right now? 4. Break old habits - You have to stop doing what you have always been doing. If it doesn’t serve you, it needs to be removed. By simply breaking rigid or thoughtless habits one by one, you will begin to erode those negative patterns and beliefs. Most importantly, be kind and patient with yourself. You were put here for a reason. Love every inch of you, including your flaws.

FOR THE CHOP: Make sure that you cut in clean lines. WITH salons closed during the Coronavirus crisis, many of us are wondering when we’ll be able to get our next haircut. While the chop isn’t urgent for many of us, some are reaching for the scissors to do it ourselves. However, before you do get stuck into athome cutting, it’s helpful to know what the experts suggest. After your hair is washed and towel dried, section your hair from the front and the back and then split your back sections into two new sections - the split needs to be from ear to ear. As the sections are created,
less hair is involved, making it easier to manage. Make sure that you cut in clean lines and that you cut the same amount on each section. For a trim we recommend cutting 1cm to 2cm. This will ensure that split ends are removed and that your hair will look cleaner and fresh. Repeat the same section by section until you reach the top of the head. You then need to section the front into two new sections each and cut it one by one. Make sure that you again cut the same amount as you did at the back.

SINCE the start of the pandemic, we haven’t heard much from the Far-Right. The usual loud-mouthed media names like rent-a-gob, Katie Hopkins and professional millionaire bigot, Tommy Robinson, have been very quiet too. Maybe they’re still blabbering on, but perhaps there’s more important things for the media to focus on right now? Who knows? But their absence from the UK media spotlight has been a welcome change. Then Vox, the far-right Spanish political party, pop up. They recently proposed that Spain should end universal healthcare. Meaning all non-residents will have to pay for healthcare if they get ill
with the Corona Virus! That’s not only inhumane, but also dangerous. If those people can’t pay, they would be left out in society to infect many others! Quite Frankly, it’s a ridiculous suggestion. But hardly surprising from the FarRight! We’ve also been warned by the Italian Premier, Giuseppe Conte, about the possible rise in Nationalism in the country. As anger at the EU’s response to the crisis grows, whatever problems Italy have getting extra EU funding right now, turning to Nationalism isn’t the answer. Nationalism does have a habit of rear-

Also, in mainland Europe after the Great Depression. By the time Hitler came to power in January 1933, one in three Germans were unemployed. Jews were portrayed as sub-human and a threat to the economic future of the country. We all know what happened after that.
So many say, ‘Never again.’ Yet the same patterns of blame have repeated themselves over the last century. Experts believe this will be the biggest financial disaster since the Great Depression. It will be testing times. There are dark forces out there that will try and exploit this situation for their own agendas. No matter how tough things get, blaming minorities isn’t the answer. Most of us reading this newspaper are immigrants ourselves. We could find that we’re the ones being blamed for hardship. It’s not hard to imagine that there will be resentment if we’re financially stable. I believe we should treat others how we’d wish to be treated, as we could easily end up the refugees. I think now is the time we drop the hatred and resentment of immigrants and refugees, that we’ve seen so much of in recent times. We all need to work together as a globe to get through this. From a safe two metres’ distance apart though!

AFTER 18 years trying for a baby through IVF, a couple is spending lockdown with their ‘miracle’ identical twins after becoming a family at long last on Mother’s Day. Mick, 53, and Ruth O’Malley, 39, from Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, underwent the IVF process five times before the joyous arrival of their boys at Scunthorpe General Hospital.
