Those who have worked long difficult shifts or have even come out of retirement to lend a hand and have been able to continue through panic and tragedy. We would also like to extend our thanks to the police offocers who are not only patrolling the streets with the uncertainty of what they might face, but displaying such bravery in continuing to serve the public by keeping them safe, off the streets and in their homes. Many people may go unnoticed behind the scenes but are certainly not taken for granted. These could be anybody from the cleaning and sanitation services, technicians, electricians and engineers helping to set up makeshift hospital spaces, to the charities and volunteers delivering food to the elderly and those in need or the people in pharmacies and supermarkets putting themselves in danger by being available to provide us with life’s necessities which will help us get through this unprecedented situation. From the moment the State of Alarm was put into play Euro Weekly News has been astonished at how individuals, communities and even large businesses have done their utmost to help with acts of kindness rarely seen in a normal day to day situation. The togetherness and selflessness are absolutely awe-inspiring and has shone fresh light on the grace of humanity and our fellow man. We must also thank you, the patient and brave public, for staying in your homes, comforting and supporting your family and showing such strength to get through this together. To watch you manage to stand on your balcony or at your window and exude positivity and community spirit every night at 8pm in a joint act of gratitude is uplifting.Finally, and by no means least, we are devoted to our loyal readers who have stuck by us through thick and thin. Please stay positive EURO WEEKLY NEWS CEO, Michel Euesden, urged everybody to “please stay positive” during an interview on Marbella TV, where she discussed the unprecedented challenges facing the nation during the coronavirus pandemic, and the duty the newspaper has to keep people informed. Donning protective gloves, only removing her mask to talk to host Nicole King, Michel said: “We have a duty of care to all of our readers to let them know what is going on in these difficult times as things are changing day by STICK TOGETHER: EWN Publishers, day and hour by hour. Steven and Michel Euesden. “We are still able to distribute our newspapers to supermarkets, which are still open, but we have Euro Weekly News online www.euroweeklynews.com and our Facebook: Euro Weekly Newspaper, which is getting more and more popular every day, bringing our readers the most up-todate news.” When asked what were the largest concerns facing the public, Michel replied: “I think the largest concerns are fundamental as we do not know how long this will last... the State of Alarm can be extended indefinitely. We need to make that clear to people. “But at the moment, we need to think about the basics, making sure our community has got shelter and food. That is our responsibility as people in the media. “What we have at the moment is ‘me’ becoming ‘we.’ WE have to take care of those around us, this is a great leveller. None of us are going to come out the other side free of damage, but together we can give each other peace of mind, I really believe that. We are all going to come out of this together, please stay positive.”

Top Marks for British School THE El Limonar International School in Villamartin has made a large donation of personal safety gear to be used by San Miguel Council staff, including the Local Police, during the pandemic. The safety clothing was going to be used by kitchen and cleaning staff, but after it had to close its doors due to the State of Alarm, it made the donation to the local authority. The gift came as the British school was once again rated as one of the best 12 international schools in the Valencia region in a survey conducted by the El Mundo newspaper. It’s the only British school in the Vega Baja region to get the prestigious honour.
One for the kids AS more people stay home to selfisolate, people with young children may have the added strain of trying to keep the kids entertained. Edinburgh Zoo has revealed that they have seen a surge in the amount of people watching their animal webcams. Viewers are particularly enjoying watching the popular Edinburgh penguins, but they may get a bit more than they bargained for as March and April is when penguins are known to mate. The live cameras allow visual access to Edinburgh Zoo’s panda, penguins, koalas and tigers. Delighted animal fans took to social media to talk about how much they are enjoying watching the animals live. TWO of the largest councils in the Vega Baja region have launched new online services in the light of the coronavirus outbreak. Orihuela Council’s website now has a dedicated section featuring the latest Covid-19 news from the Spanish government and the regional Valencian administration, along with what is happening locally. The site, which offers an English translation, is www.orihuela.es/infocoronavirus/. Torrevieja Council has used the University of Alicante to create a special site called Torrevieja Resiliente, which will keep residents in touch with all the local services that are being provided and make direct contact with council departments. A local newsfeed is also part of the site which includes a message board for people to make appeals and requests on. Salty Success AN ill wind has blown some good into Torrevieja’s salt mines, with the crisis boosting demand from food industry buyers. Despite the fact that the bulk of the city’s salt production is destined for export, increased home sales mean that the famous Salinas site is busier than ever. Three shifts of eight hours each ensures that work continues around the clock, with extra disinfection and social distancing protocols introduced.

ELCHE IN CRISIS APPEAL A HOSPITALITY association has written to Elche’s mayor, Carlos González, calling for urgent help for hotels, bars and restaurants which have been closed down under the State of Alarm. They say that many businesses in the area will go bankrupt if positive action is not taken by Elche Council. María del Mar Valera, president of the Provincial Association of Hospitality Entrepreneurs of Alicante (APEHA) has asked the authority to produce a package of measures to help her members during and after the shutdown. APEHA has asked for a variety of taxes to be refunded that many businesses would have paid already and for the next period of payments to be extended or put aside. The group also wants non-refundable subsidies to cover certain bills like water and for any building

Medical Staff Rise TORREVIEJA health department has hired 97 medical workers to help deal with the extra workload by the Covid-19 crisis. Ribera Salud, who operate the service, has a total of 1,100 permanent staff members in the Torrevieja region, with the majority of them based at Torrevieja Hospital. Further north, Ribera also added 37
people to the team at Elche’s Vinalopó Hospital, which it also manages. The company says it is also paying for all staff meals during the day, even if people are off-shift. They say they are trying to arrange work schedules that can balance up the seriousness of the situation, along with their employees spending time with their families.

THE Ministry of Health has updated the figures for coronavirus in Spain and the number of total cases has now reached 94,417 nation-wide. Reporting the number of fatalities is an important part of tracking the progression of this pandemic but we cannot forget how essential it is to report the number of patients who have recovered from this virus. On a brighter note, the number of patients who have recovered from the coronavirus in Spain is at the time going to print currently 19,259 and counting. Flattening the curve of infection is a collective effort. This crisis has highlighted the true meaning of solidarity between residents. This solidarity has also been witnessed between the different regions in Spain, as autonomous communities like Andalucia, Galicia, Extremadura and Murcia have all donated ventila-

The strict quarantine measures put in place by Spain’s State of Alarm are already beginning to positively translate into recorded data. These numbers are only expected to rise as an average stay in hospital due to the coronavirus can take around two weeks until patients are given the all clear, in ICUs the length of
the stay is even longer, between 15 and 20 days. Applauding the survivors is just as important as mourning those who have unfortunately passed. Each day new videos are uploaded onto social media which feature patients leaving the ICU and returning home to their families. Hopefully this is a trend we continue to see, as together we beat coronavirus.

Callosa Gets Booted A FOOTWEAR company in Callosa de Segura has donated over 1,300 pairs of boots to the Military Emergency Unit (UME) to be used during the coronavirus emergency. Panter has given its special anti-bacterial boots to UME staff which are being used during their cleaning and disinfection work of public areas in the Vega Baja region during the crisis. The company has also donated 432 pairs of rubber boots to health workers, in addition to manufacturing protective masks that are going to local medical centres and Orihuela’s Vega Baja Hospital.

Zig-Zag Drunk MURCIA’S Local Police said that “seeing is believing” after they arrested a drunk man on a Segway scooter in the city centre. The man, who was breaking the confinement rules, immediately caught the eyes of a patrol as they spotted him zig-zagging around the streets. He was found to be four-times over the permitted alcohol rate, with the police taking to their Twitter site to lament his behaviour.
Lorry Overturns A LORRY driver had a lucky escape after his vehicle overturned in the Albatera area on the road to Crevillente. The 55-year-old man was taken to Elche’s Vinalopó Hospital with minor injuries.

TWO women broke ‘stay at home’ rules to steal a television set belonging to one of their former partners. They’re alleged to have forced through the front door to gain access to the man’s house in Barrio del Progreso in Murcia City. The women were detained by the police, and one of them said that it was her TV and retorted that her ex-partner had stolen her three children. She now faces a charge of breaking a restraining order, which prohibited her from seeing the man. Both women also face prosecution over breaking lockdown rules and of committing a robbery.

Over And Out Now TORREVIEJA’S Local Police force has eventually gone digital age with a new set of walkie-talkies costing €60,000. Contracts for a new communications system were being sorted out by Torrevieja Council, but 50 TETRA units have arrived as a matter or urgency, after the authority got the Valencian government to speed
things up due to the current crisis. The force was one of the last in Spain to use old-style analogue units, which could easily be monitored by unwelcome listeners using scanners. The poor quality also frustrated officers with many of them using their own mobile phones for communications.

Smoking Ban Call AN Elche-based campaign group has called for smoking at home to be banned during the current emergency lockdown. ‘Los Derechos se Respten’ (Respect Rights) has written to health minister, Salvador Illa, asking for an immediate ban on using tobacco and vaping products indoors, because of the risks to non-smokers, including children. Group coordinator, Joaquín Marcos, said: “Health experts recently called on people to quit smoking, due to the damage caused to the respiratory system, which is vulnerable to the coronavirus.” They added that a home smoking ban would also reduce some of the massive pressure on hospitals.
Greater coronavirus testing has been promised for residence home staff and health professionals by Valencian health minister, Ana Barceló, but the massive issue is the lack of test kits.

RUBBISH BINS: Offenders will now be penalised.
ORIHUELA Council has appealed for residents to stop leaving bags of rubbish next to waste collection bins, because they are worried that the dumpsters could give them coronavirus. “The containers are being cleaned and disin-
fected on a daily basis, and there should be no reason to worry about putting any bags into them,” said Orihuela’s street cleaning and waste disposal councillor, Dámaso Aparicio. He added that the practice could actually expose council workers to
a greater risk of Covid-19 exposure because they have to pick up the bags by hand. The whole area, including the Orihuela Costa, will now see the Local Police and Guardia Civil penalising offenders who put trash outside the containers.
More Patrols THE Guardia Civil have increased rural patrols in Murcia to stop property robberies rising during the lockdown. The State of Alarm period has seen re-
sources initially targetted on urban areas to police the new rules, leading to concerns that burglars might move to strike at more isolated homes.

Pilar Man Crushed THE owner of a Pilar de la Horadada area restaurant died after his car rolled on top of him, after he got out to lift an entrance barrier to his business.
Fifty-four-year-old Raul Felipe had arrived at the Club NĂĄutico la Torre restaurant, accessed by a steep downward track. Mr Felipe exited his vehicle to raise the security
barrier, but then spotted that his car had started to move down the slope. He instinctively got in front of the car to try to stop it from crashing, but was fatally run over.

AN Alicante pensioner died from a heart attack whilst he was driving on the Divina Pastora industrial estate in the city. The car crashed into a street lamp on Calle Rubens and attempts to revive him failed. Paramedics treated his passenger who suffered an anxiety attack at the scene on Calle Rubens.
ORIHUELA Council has stopped the weekly pick-up of discarded furniture and electrical appliances during the current State of Alarm period. The authority says that it is totally focusing on basic bin collection and cleaning services in the area, with no time available for workers to deal with non-essential items.

Orihuela Stops Charging ORIHUELA has become the last council in the Vega Baja region to scrap parking meter charges in all zones of the city. The authority had been criticised that it had not lifted the surcharge when the State of Alarm came into force. Neighbouring areas have already dispensed with charges, but blue zone payments continued in Orihuela City with the exception of weekends. The justification from Mayor Emilio Bascunana was that people from
rural parts of the municipality needed parking spaces to conduct important business at banks and chemists. “We are here to deal with the whole community and just the few,” the mayor said at the time. The authority’s change of mind came after the news that non-essential workers were told to stay at home under the latest update to the State of Alarm. “With that major change, the parking charges can now be lifted,” said Orihuela Council in a statement.
Drone Patrols Launched DRONE: Comes with a loudspeaker in English and Spanish. ELCHE’S Local Police have followed other parts of Spain in starting to use drones to spot people who break the State of Alarm rules. The drone comes with a loudspeaker to put out in English, Spanish, and Valenciano to warn people to obey the law.
The patrols will take in areas like the Clot de Galvany and the beaches around La Marina village. The Elche force has started using the aerial equipment after the council began the first official steps in February to use drones for policing.

Carnival Masks Anger A DOCTOR working at a Murcia City hospital has savaged the quality of personal protection equipment being offered to health workers during the coronavirus outbreak. The unnamed medic is based at the Reina Sofia hospital and said that the masks that are made available were of the same quality that would be worn at a carnival parade. He added that the standard of personal equipment could not prevent his colleagues getting infected with Covid-19. “We want to do our work under adequate conditions,” the doctor said. “As we treat coronavirus sufferers, we use protection that will not stop us getting it as well, as some of the masks are decades old.”

Guardia Attacked In Home Row TWO people were jailed after a punch was thrown at a Guardia Civil officer at an illegal gathering in Torrevieja. Neighbours in an undisclosed area of the city phoned the Guardia to report excessive noise coming from a property
during the State of Alarm. Officers arrived to find two men and two women aged between 22 and 36 years at the address. The foursome refused to tell Guardia who they were, and then one of the men attacked an officer. His friends joined in the
assault, which ended when reinforcements arrived. All four were arrested and a judge refused to grant bail to two of them as he believed they could reoffend and also fail to appear at a future court date.

Homeless Meals Stop TORREVIEJA charity, Reach Out, has been forced to stop feeding homeless people in the city for the first time since they started in 2011, due to the State of Alarm measures. Reach Out president, David Young, said: “After a lot of soul searching and discussions, we have sadly decided to suspend providing meals as a temporary measure, until things return to normal.”
Food charity, Alimentos Solidarios, will continue to supply food to the homeless, whilst Reach Out will maintain their fortnightly family pack distribution. The suspension is a fresh blow for Reach Out, as it has had to close down their charity shops, which are their main source of income. Food Scheme Expanded TORREVIEJA Council has agreed to spend €70,000 for at least two months on daily meals for poverty-stricken residents. The city’s mayor, Eduardo Dolon, has authorised the money, after the local charity food provider, Alimentos Solidarios, said that demand had spiked up by over 30 per cent. Torrevieja’s El Huertano restaurant has the
contract to provide the meals, which will either be delivered directly to homes, or can be picked up from the Alimentos Solidarios headquarters in the San Roque area of the city. Approximately 300 people will benefit, though users will have to be vetted by Torrevieja social services to make sure that they qualify.

CLOSURE MOVE: Ana Martínez Vidal rebuffed by Madrid.
UNIONS in the Murcia region have slammed a national government decision to overturn a local ban on supermarkets opening up in tourist areas on Sundays. The CC OO and UGT unions described the move as “reckless.” Murcia’s business minister, Ana Martínez Vidal, said that many of the municipalities wanted to keep supermarkets closed on Sunday during the State of Alarm. Her government made the closure move, but Madrid reversed it on the grounds that Murcia politicians had no right to do it. The change means that supermarkets
in designated tourist zones like Los Alcázares and San Javier are again open for business on a Sunday .
Stranger Danger ELDERLY residents have been warned about unexpected people knocking at their door during Spain’s State of Alarm. The National Police say they are worried that criminals may take advantage of older people by calling on them and pretend to be calling in an official capacity. They are also concerned about random phone calls that seek personal details.
Cyclist Pursued A CYCLIST gave the National Police the runaround in a chase round the streets of Murcia City, as he broke the home confinement rules. The 56-year-old Murcia resident was spotted cycling on a pavement and failed to stop for officers who waved him down. A pursuit then started that took in a dozen or so streets, as the nimble cyclist led the police a merry dance over several kilometres. The chase only ended when he fell off his bike, by which time one of the police cars had also crashed into a tree.
CANCELLED: The 23rd jazz festival will not go ahead.
Jazz Silenced SAN JAVIER’S prestigious International Jazz Festival, scheduled for July, has been cancelled. Culture councillor, David Martínez, said that it was a painful decision to scrap what would have been the 23rd year of the event in the Mar Menor town. San Javier Council said they would assess soon whether August’s International Festival of Theatre, Music, and Dance has any change of date going ahead. Mayor José Miguel Luengo added if there was a big improvement in the coronavirus situation, the possibility of special events would be considered to boost the local economy.

Drone Takes The Heat A MURCIA region council has successfully tried out a drone that uses a thermal camera to measure the temperature of people walking outdoors. The authority in Mazarron volunteered its Civil Protection department to be the first group in Spain to try out the heat-measuring drone, which had only previously been used in China. The innovative equipment was supplied by the Approcess company in Alhama de Murcia, and besides the special onboard camera, it also carries a loudspeaker to broadcast messages in Spanish and English during the current State of Alarm.

House Fire
A 73-YEAR-OLD woman suffered smoke inhalation after her home caught fire in the Espinardo area of Murcia City. Emergency services were called after residents spotted smoke coming out of a property on Calle Practicante JosĂŠ MoĂąino. An ambulance team attended to her, but fortunately she did not need any further treatment at a medical centre.

CONTROVERSIAL French microbiologist Didier Raoult has managed to convince thousands, including US President Donald Trump, that a common antimalarial drug can save people infected by Covid-19. In just a short time Raoult has become France’s best-known doctor after announcing the Coronavirus ‘endgame’ on YouTube. The antimalarial chloroquine and its related compound, hydroxychloroquine, have been the focus of intense debate in France since Raoult, the head of a university hospital institute in Marseille, announced what he said were promising results on a small sample of patients. Since then, people

Police Get Fired Up ORIHUELA Council has backed a new statute that gives Orihuela Local Police legal permission to use a shooting range at their headquarters. Deputy spokesman for the Government Team, Rafael Almagro, said that official approval had been granted for the practice facility, which had to be closed because it did not have the legal authority to be used. Orihuela’s councillor for Citizen Security, Ramón López Cabrera, said that officers would no longer have to travel in the future to Elche for their mandatory gun training. HUNDREDS of late-night party revellers were arrested on an industrial estate in Malaga last night who ignored the State of Alarm law to stage an all-night rave. Working on a tip-off, the Guardia Civil burst into the complete surprise of the guests who were by now ‘off their heads’ as one officer described it. When they entered a separate room on the premises they realised why. Police seized a large amount of ‘party’ drugs at the event, arrests followed. Apart from closing the event down thousands of euros of fines were issued to the organisers and the mainly teenage audience. Many were in tears as they called their parents for help, some even frightened of the outcome.
A STUPID challenge which began on a new social media platform, TikTok, has spurred on a string of idiotic videos. Thankfully, social media is monitoring these videos and taking them down; however, there have been some cases of selfish individuals joining the bandwagon. This vile challenge began after an American ‘influencer’ named Ava Louise went viral after recording a video of herself licking a toilet bowl on a plane and with the caption ‘Coronavirus Challenge.’ She later admitted that her video was taken in a clean private jet and that she only took the video to go viral. However, this did not stop others around the world from recreating this ‘challenge’ to gain their five seconds of online fame. Some have even gone as far as dunking their whole head into a toilet bowl.

Rojales Launches Special Hotline RESIDENTS in Rojales are now able to call a special hotline telephone number to make any inquiries or to report incidents during the current State of Alarm. The initiative was launched by Rojales mayor, Antonio Pérez, on behalf of the local operational coordination centre(CECOR). The CECOR committee includes councillors, Rojales medical centre representatives, and members of the Local Police, Guardia Civil, and Civil Protection. Modest Returns A 47-YEAR-OLD man was arrested by the National Police in Cartagena for robbing two petrol stations. The cost of the damage was far in excess of what he took, after he hit both stations when they were closed. His first target saw him break a dispens-

Kids Plan Foiled PLANS for two members of Torrevieja’s Civil Protection team to dress up as cartoon characters were scuppered by the central government’s regional representative. Posters had appeared on Torrevieja Council social media sites promoting the fact that Mickey Mouse and Spongebob Squarepants would be driving around the city and saying hello to youngsters via a public address system. The characters would have been accompanied by Civil Protection colleagues and Guardia Civil members to deliver messages to youngsters watching from balconies as a show of appreciation during the State of Alarm. But Torrevieja mayor, Eduardo Dolon, was rung by the government representative and told to scrap the idea.

Jacarilla Horse Rescue GUARDIA CIVIL officers found themselves with an unusual assignment in the Jacarilla area after getting reports of a horse that could not get out of a water drainage channel. The incident was at Paraje Pinormehoso next to the CV-920 highway, with the horse having been in the ditch for some time. Two hours later, with the use of a special harness and a tractor, the horse was successfully removed to safety.

WHILE new cases of coronavirus continue to hit the headlines, a hospital in Asturias in northwest Spain is celebrating the birth of a healthy baby whose mother is being treated for Covid-19. The Ministry of Health of the Principality of Asturias reported the first birth of a patient affected by Covid-19. It was feared the baby would be born with the disease, but health bosses are delighted to confirm the baby is completely healthy. The mother gave birth on Wednesday March 25 to a baby boy at the Central University Hospital of Asturias (HUCA), by caesarean section in the 33rd week of gestation and the regional government said “mother and child are well.”

With white robes billowing in the breeze, and equipped with camera and microphone to broadcast live, Father Juan Manuel Garcia stood aloft and blessed his town of Arroyo de la Luz, which has been severely hit by the coronavirus crisis. Dozens of local residents have tested positive for Covid-19 and there have been a number of deaths. The priest said it had been easy to get up on the roof and he hadn’t been at all frightened. Father Juan is offering daily live online masses for the faithful.

DRUNK MAN Police find dead carers
Removing the cyclist from the ditch. OFFICERS of the Guardia Civil received information that a man was injured and unable to get out of a ditch in a rural road in a remote part of Mallen in Zaragoza. When they arrived they discovered a cycle on the road and after hearing moans and grunts coming from a ditch they found the cyclist lying in water and mud. They then realised that the reason for his incapacity was that he was completely drunk and was almost incoherent as well as possibly suffering from the first stages of hypothermia. Three officers managed to pull him out of the ditch and wrapped him in a ‘space blanket’ whilst calling for an am-
bulance to take him to hospital. About 20 minutes after helping load him onto the ambulance, the officers received a call from the paramedics asking for help as the man didn’t want to stay in the ambulance and was trying to escape. By the time they arrived at the ambulance it was agreed that there was no visible injury and rather than take him on to hospital, the officers decided to take him home to get him into a place of safety and to sleep it off. When he woke later, the 57-year-old discovered that he had received a ‘ticket’ for failing to comply with the containment measures established in the Royal Decree due to the State of Alarm.

Balcony Bingo BALCONY BINGO! While Ireland, like the UK, looks to Italy and Spain for the emerging Covid19 pattern, it seems the Irish have a unique way to keep spirits up and pass the time. The Italians take to their balconies to sing, and the Spanish applaud the hard work of the medical and emergency staff, but in Dublin’s fair city, the residents of one block of flats decided to play balcony bingo. The social distancing
game was hosted by a resident, who set up a microphone and speakers in front of the building, to entertain those at the doors of their homes. The mood was high during the game, as one family on a second floor balcony, called house. The residents of Canon Mooney Gardens, in the Ringsend area of the capital, came out in force, but remained apart, to enjoy the fun. The man behind the plan is local, Michael Larkin, who has admitted that he has never even played a game before, but wanted to get his neighbours together in the safest, most fun way possible. Dressed in a white disposal boiler suit, mask and gloves, he set up his calling station on top of the sheds, in the middle of the courtyard at the front of the complex. While things
were being set up and the bingo cards distributed to the balconies, his daughter Hollie acted as DJ, opting for Tina Turner and Whitney Houston to set the tone. Despite extremely cold weather, the game went on for over two hours, with prizes such as Easter Eggs for the children, as well as highly sought after loo roll for the adults. Due to the success of the game, it looks set to become a regular thing during the ongoing crisis.

Employee bonus THE Alcampo, Carrefour and Intermarche supermarket chains in France are paying a €1,000 bonus to employees working in the stores during the coronavirus crisis in line with a French government recommendation for big companies. There are no fiscal charges for the businesses, and the payments can be made up until the end of June. Alcampo said it was giving the bonus to all cashiers, shop workers, warehouse staff and employees doing home deliveries. According to French press 65,000 Al Campo workers will benefit. The move was welcomed by the union representing Alcam-

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT AT the time of writing, almost unbelievably, with the world facing an unprecedented holocaust some of the UK mosques are still refusing to close their doors! Consequently, those that are deciding to ignore the directives and common sense advice of the authorities are completely packed with worshippers. It is a known fact that Malaya’s source of Covid-19 began in a mosque. The disease not only engulfed Malaya but then spread to at least SIX more countries. Today I received a recent video from someone who filmed a car journey through London’s East end. The streets were packed with unmasked ethnic residents, queuing, shopping and completely ignoring the government’s directive to stay indoors and self-isolate. ‘So what’? I hear some of the more cynical among you observe. ‘If they want to take chances with their lives so be it.’

But it doesn’t end there does it? When these people start dropping like flies, it is the unbiased emergency services that will suffer the most. It will also result in thousands of hospital places being occupied by a self-centered populace who did nothing to assist the country
in its battle to survive this horror. It will also subsequently deny beds and respirators to thousands of the indigenous population, many of whom have already fought in two world wars and have now had to endure even more hardship and depravation in their efforts to fight
yet another enemy that threatens the UK and its citizens. And what happens when the women refuse to be touched by male emergency workers or doctors!? I truly do despair of this section of the UK; large numbers of the public who have no intention of ever integrating with their fellow citizens. I also sympathise with the victims of physical abusers that must be rampant during this close down emergency, particularly in households that consider women second class citizens! In its time honoured way I also anticipate a positive tsunami of ‘claims’ and legal shenanigans from people citing violations of human rights or PC biased decisions when all this nightmare is at an end. I can almost hear the lawyers and legal sharks rubbing their hands from here! There should most certainly be legislation introduced to create some form of legal immunity from all deci-
sions taken during this crisis. The idea of droves of court cases dragging on for years, achieving nothing but a very healthy lining to the pockets of a section of our professional leech brigade truly does stick in the craw of human decency and needs to be avoided at all cost. Finally to all readers of our great publication, and indeed to all at the EWN who are managing to keep the ‘wheels’ in motion, I wish you all health, strength and a positive deluge of love and good wishes as we continue to seek that elusive light at the end of this dark disease ridden tunnel. One thing you can be totally sure of is, that given time and with the resourcefulness of the human spirit we will undoubtedly prevail. God bless us all. CONSULAR WORK DURING DIFFICULT TIMES CONSULAR MATTERS UNTIL a few weeks ago most of us lived our lives around our daily affairs with more or less stress levels, for example, climate change, consequences of Brexit, Easter holiday plans or projects typical of the comfortable society we live in. However, that sense of security and control over our own lives has now blown up in an unprecedented global crisis, despite the fact that scientists had been warning of the very real threat of a pandemic; no country in the world paid much attention… until the coronavirus slipped through under the very doors of our homes. Our planet, as if it had its own conscious, has said
‘enough’ and, just like when we subject ourselves to extreme effort either physical, mental or emotional, our bodies stop and we become ill, our planet has made us stop in our tracks; and maybe we should now all take a moment to think about what and just how well we are doing things. This crisis has now confined us to our homes, with our families and pets, and at the same time seems to have placed before us our own inner reflections of our loneliness and fears. But this situation is even more distressing if it happens when you are away from your own family and country; this is the time when consulate services must carry out the most important of duties and for which we are prepared and trained: to help citizens return to their home countries, keep them informed as much as
possible, and also help those who are in a weak or vulnerable situation. And this is exactly what we have been doing, each one of the members of the Consular Corps of Malaga, to the best of possibilities and circumstances, we have continually been helping each other, sharing information and in direct contact with the authorities to offer our citizens as much details as we can. The fact that I am also a practising lawyer, has helped me to understand and observe all the particulars of the State of Alarm, and as such I have implemented them in my position as Consul of Denmark in Andalucia and Extremadura; keeping up to date with government decrees and regulations that apply to our Danish residents and non-residents within our consular jurisdiction during this crisis.

CORONA BABIES GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY FIRSTLY, I wish to extend my sincere condolences to the families and friends of all who have lost loved ones across the planet. My household has experienced sadness too, learning this week that a close family friend died in Milan, due to the virus. Living in Spain, a wonderful country that’s currently going through hell, I've witnessed, first hand, the amazing effort by the Spanish frontline services, as well as the majority of the citizens. For years, I've admired the Spanish, always strong, always polite, and always putting family first. The people of Marbella adapted quickly to the current regime, and essential trips to the grocery store, something very new for me, have been an uplifting experience in many ways. Seeing humans exude kindness and support for each other, gives us great hope, at a time when we need it most. Okay, so we may no longer be able to go to lunch at our favourite restaurants every day, and cocktail hour may now take place at home, but life keeps going, and so must we. In a long list of family traditions, martini time is one rule we’ve strictly adhered to for generations. Always at home, always at five o’clock, and always requiring correct attire. While it may feel as if old rules have gone out the window, making way for the new, this is one rule I insist must continue. As we sat by the fire discussing the news of the day, all of which Covid-19 related, my friend Paolo asked our thoughts on Corona Babies. “Imagine in nine or 10 months, there’ll be a baby boom like never before!” he said in his strong Italian accent, as he puffed on a Monte Cristo. “All those couples trapped at home, killing time making babies,” he laughed. I guess he made a good point. Does that mean, in nine months’ time, nappies will replace loo roll as the hot new commodity? Should we invest in Pampers now? What will the ‘hot’ names be for these new-born boys and girls? At dinner, we used FaceTime to invite others to help fill our usually full table. Somehow, we
DRESS CODE: Now is surgical gloves. cooked enough pasta to feed an army, and we managed to eat it all. “A Corona baby? Are you mad?” screeched our good friend Cristina, who joined us via the small screen from Rome. “You must remember, darlings, being trapped at home with our partners, may result in divorces over babies!” She laughed, although I could sense that on day 19 of lockdown with her husband, she may not be joking. The following morning, I took my dog Henry up the street for a walk, happy to see that the streets of Los Monteros were completely isolated. As someone used to lunching every day, hence my nickname being Sir Lunchalot, I now have a very different daily dress-code. My old routine required numerous outfit changes - gym, lunch, dinner. These days I find myself surviving in sportswear, complimented by a face mask and surgical gloves. So, you can understand why, even though the house feels empty, it feels good to dress for martini time. Making it a sense of occasion, and I know my mother would be proud, as would my late grandmother. Another thing, to avoid the chance of divorce or singledom, we should all try to make an effort. Trust me, life in quarantine, feels and looks much better when you dress up.

As everybody else in the country and maybe soon the world, I am isolated in my house. It’s just me and the dog and though she is great company lack of human contact is getting me down. I have exhausted all the TV series I had in mind and have eaten all my goodies and really need to start exercising. However, the most exciting part of the day is at 8pm when I can stand on my balcony and celebrate with my neighbours. Although they are mostly Spanish and I don’t speak the language perfectly, I feel included, I feel part of the world. This social occasion, though only for 10 minutes is enough to get me through my day. My neighbour puts on ‘I

Signs of hope FOR many of the least secure newspaper titles, the virus could sound the death knell after years of struggle. The question is whether the pandemic could lead to the death of print itself? That this is even being contemplated at a time when the need and demand for news and information are at an alltime high is absurd. Traffic to online news sites is up across the board while viewing figures for TV public service broadcasters are at levels not seen since the financial crisis. Many companies have suspended publication of a physical edition until it becomes viable to print again. One look at the largest advertisers in print media points to how potentially catastrophic coronavirus is for the industry in general. However, there are signs of hope amid the warnings for local newspapers as the world needs good journalism more than ever and people also urgently need verified information in the face of not only an unprecedented health emergency, but technology’s ability to spread fake news. What’s more, the social distancing measure being brought in to fight coronavirus makes local news even more important to strengthen and build on community spirit. No one knows how long this pandemic will last or exactly how much damage it will cause. At the end of it, it is to be hoped that some local papers at least are still available to help rebuild and reassure.

Ignorance is bliss DEAR Euro Weekly, As a long-time resident in Spain, it is a relief to see the government here acting so decisively. Of course, there are constraints to our freedom of movement but that is a temporary inconvenience. In contrast, I witness the dithering and delay of Boris Johnson when he should be decisive. From pictures in the national press, it seems a lot of people in the UK have chosen to ignore his advice. No doubt he will assure the population that he is doing his best - but if this is his best it’s just not good enough. We have family and friends who are being placed at risk because the British PM seems woefully unprepared. A sad day indeed for our ‘home country.’ Steve Marshall

And in Spain? As for me, I haven’t previously written about the virus because, rightly or wrongly, I felt read-

ers had enough information elsewhere and might prefer reading something a bit different. I also personally miss the opportunity to do voluntary work under the current lockdown. As for the Spanish, every night at 8pm everyone takes to their balconies to applaud the efforts of the nurses and doctors who, just like NHS staff, are going way beyond the call of duty. But the wider emergency is touching everyone - those who fall sick, doctors, nurses and families trying to adapt to this strange new abnormal. And it is in these abnormal times that we really see who is run-
ning the show: not the usual business leaders in the news, but the key workers who are the absolute backbone of every country. The coronavirus is radically changing everything and the fallout will be considerable for some time. It’s a Hollywood drama unfolding in real life. Sadly, there will be many losers, both people and businesses. Bottom line is that we all need to pull together, be mindful, caring and sensitively considerate. So far, that has proven to be the case, with optimistic caution as the watchword. Fingers crossed that we can turn the corner as soon as everyone everywhere prays for an early scientific breakthrough to stop this thing in its tracks. WHEN we discuss health and advice we’re given by experts, you always get the internet/armchair ‘doctors’ popping up. These people have no medical training whatsoever but think it’s fine to shove false information and conspiracies down our throats. I’ve seen it many times. ‘Educate yourself,’ they say… Which means watch YouTube conspiracy videos. Whilst so high on pot, it’s to the point of paranoia! Anti-vaxxers are the worst. In my experience, they are some of the most egotistical people I have ever come across. Their desire to be right completely overrides everything. Logic, expertise, even lives. They pray on the desperate, vulnerable and naive. Money is usually their motivation. You have a look at their social media pages and more than often they’re flogging snake oil rubbish. Quite ironic they then accuse the ‘Big Pharma’ of being money orientated! Recently, I’ve come across the Corona conspiracists. One man spent quite a lot of time on social media today telling me I’m wrong because I think the UK s h o u l d have a proper policed lockdown, like
here in Spain. He, like a few other idiots think the virus is man-made and a conspiracy to control us all. He said he refuses to social distance himself. Used boring cliché phrases like ‘I’m not a sheep.’ So, while Spain are using ice rinks to store the dead, you have idiots like him roaming the streets of the UK, without any consideration for others’ lives. Their own egos and desire to be an individual override everything, as always. I’m all for free speech - I mouth off a lot online myself. I just wonder - where do you draw the line? Pages like Natural News and Info Wars were taken down by Facebook. Conspiracies may seem harmless. But quite frankly, they aren’t. Info Wars, for example - because of their conspiracies, teachers from Sandy Hook Primary School had to move house several times due to death threats. Personally, I think the best way to deal with conspiracies is to laugh at them. But sadly, a lot of people do believe fake news. They leave their children unvaccinated. Pass the Corona Virus to innocent people. Even try and murder schoolteachers. Because of the internet, we have access to so much valuable information. But also, false and potentially dangerous information. Where do you draw the line? Anyway. It’s so disappointing all the flights out of Malaga are cancelled. Because next week I was due to visit my friend Elvis on his little island again. Hope he’s doing ok out there with Diana and Lord Lucan.

Bumbling around the Internet MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I GOT a message from my daughter asking me what was I doing on Bumble? What? What’s Bumble? Well my ‘trapped at home friends’ I’ll tell you what Bumble is. It’s a dating app and someone had decided to put a picture of me, in my wheelchair, on there as their profile picture. They didn’t use my name - just my picture. Now why would you use a picture of a 70-year-old man, in a wheelchair, as a profile picture on a dating app? What sort of date are you looking for? Didn’t make any sense. My daughter responded saying I looked nice, to see if there was any response, but I decided it was best to report it and get it removed. In fairness to Bumble it was removed immediately. Now surprisingly all that didn’t make me grumpy. In fact, I thought it was quite amusing. What did make me grumpy was my conversation with Bumble. I asked them why they just accepted profiles without verifying
them by sending real time photos and they said they ‘don’t require it but strongly encourage it.’ I also said I wanted the contact details they had on file for that bogus account. Of course they refused stating that their guidelines are in place for the safety of all their users and the decision to keep this information private is not one they made lightly. I told them it was ridiculous that they protected the fraudsters. Why did they have any rights? And that they could do what they like with no redress except having the account blocked if someone notices. This company is valued at over a billion dollars so, of course, they don’t give a crap about anything except revenue. How can it be that the only person that suffers is the person whose picture is used? Bumble say you can report it to the police but can you imagine how interested the UK police are going to be about you having your picture put on a USA owned dating app? We had a few more to and fros but I went as far as I could be bothered with. It’s a very simple fix - anyone who joins any type of dating app only has to verify the picture they put on the site with a passport or driving licence or any other photo ID. It would stop the problem instantly.

Create Healthy Boundaries In this current situation, it is easy to ‘get under each other’s feet’ therefore, it is important to respect each other’s space. If you like reading, take yourself into another room for a while and read a book whilst your partner watches their favourite TV show.
Take a hot soak in the bath whilst your partner does something they enjoy. Ask your partner, what is it you would like to do today? Remember to respect each other’s individual likes and needs. Sex Is Important Too. Sex isn’t just about intercourse. It is a way two people can connect, maintaining a level of intimacy. As a parent myself, I understand that life can get in the way. Taking care of the children, cooking, cleaning and now home schooling. By the time you’ve finished your daily chores, all you want to do is either collapse in front of the TV or go to bed and sleep, however, maintaining intimacy between you and your partner is not only scientifically proven to reduce stress levels, it is also associated with life satisfaction and positive emotions.

So, having celebrated last week, here are some aspects of bipolar disorder that are important to understand, so you can help combat social stigma: • Bipolar affects every part of your life: It may be difficult to fully understand the strain bipolar disorder can take on someone because it is an invisible illness. You look perfectly fine but it can be crippling - from intense relationships, working, and all aspects of everyday life - from sleeping to showering. • Bipolar disorder has many causes, from genetics to life events: There is no single genetic change, life event, or chemical brain imbalance that could be the root cause of bipolar disorder. Most of the time it is either a hormonal imbalance or a traumatic life event can trigger bipolar disorder. • Bipolar disorder rarely exists alone: As if a mood disorder that involves deep low depression and manic episodes wasn’t enough to deal with, bipolar disorder can also come hand in hand with mental health illness, like OCD and Anxiety. • Everyone’s bipolar disorder is different: no two people have the exact same symptoms and each diagnosis can be very different. The same medication or therapies do not work for all of us. However, there are two main types of bipolar disorder: Bipolar I which is characterised by one or more manic episodes that last at least a week; and Bipolar II, which is characterised by more depressive episodes. • There are many celebrities that live with bipolar disorder: Celebrities including Demi Lovato, Mariah Carey, Mel Gibson, Russell Brand , amongst so many others are using their voice to beat bipolar disorder stigma. • There may be a creativity connection: Did you

Van Gogh, considered one of the most greatest artists of all time, was diagnosed as having bipolar disorder. • It is life-threatening, and support is so important : An estimated one in five people diagnosed with bipolar disorder die by suicide. World Bipolar Day is an opportunity to show those living with the day-to-day challenges of this condition they are not alone, they have your support, and there is always hope. Stigma usually stems from ignorance or fear. For example, when a person tells a friend or an acquaintance that he or she has bipolar disorder, the response might be: • “Oh, everybody’s a little bipolar, why are you so special?” • “Oh, man, you’re one of them? Gosh, that's tough.” • “You mean you might flip out and start shooting people?” Unfortunately, for some individuals with bipolar, stigma can cause them to hide their diagnosis or it creates a great deal of shame. As a consequence, many people with bipolar don’t get the right treatment or the support they need to manage their illness. How to massage: Always start from the centre of your face and move outwards and upwards, don’t be afraid to be firm. Drop a small amount of face oil into the palms of your hands and rub lightly together. Place the palms of your hands against either side of your nose and sweep outwards and upwards. Try arranging your index and middle fingers into peace signs, join into a diamond shape and place your chin in the hollow. Sweep outwards along and up your jaw. Place your peace signs upright with each finger hugging the sides of your cheekbones in a V shape. Push up and repeat.
BE FIRM: A good massage has a wealth of benefits. Now place your index finger on the outer corner of your eye pulling it taut. Use your middle finger from the same hand to sweep underneath your eye in an arch, pressing along the top of your cheekbone. Repeat the above move but taking your middle finger along the top of your eyebrows instead of underneath your eye. Firmly press in an arch from the beginning of your eyebrow outwards, working along the brow bone.

BARRY DUKE DID I really sleep until 2.30pm? Ridiculous! But that’s what happened when I pitted myself against my computer’s Scrabble board. When I glanced up at the clock it was 5.00am, and the stats showed I was losing many more games than winning. This, I reckon, is because the software recently updated itself, and in so doing began using words that aren’t English. ‘Nkosi,’ the Zulu word for king, is one, but when I use the same word in Spanish - ‘rey’ - the computer says no. In normal times I’d never spend five hours playing computer games, but there’s nothing remotely normal about being quarantined. So days and nights seem to have more hours in them than I know what to do with. The recently-opened convenience store near our apartment offers some relief, but at the same

CONTAGION: I never imagined how prescient it would turn out to be. time it’s doing my waistline no favours. Never have I bought so many chocolate biscuits to nibble while staring at the TV screen. Last night I got through two packets watching people panic
buying in supermarkets while trying hard to keep their distance from one another. Grave voices were saying ‘wash your hands frequently, don’t touch your face, don’t go out unless you really
have to and we’re working as hard as possible to find a cure for a virus that we think originated from bats in China.’ Was I watching the news? No! On the screen was a movie made in 2011. The plot of ‘Contagion’ is uncannily like the current situation. When I first saw it I rated it highly but never imagined how prescient it would turn out to be. The plot departs from the reality of Covid-19 in only one respect: the people advising social distancing and speaking about the efforts to find effective treatments and a vaccine are eminent scientists, not politicians. In the movie the President of the US is not seen; he’s holed up in a bunker. If only the same could be said of the muppet Donald Trump. In a few sentences in a recent White House briefing he succeeded in flatly contradicting Anthony S Fauci, Director of the National

Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and insulting an NBC News correspondent, Peter Alexander, calling him a ‘very bad reporter.’ Worst, Trump suggested that, because he’s ‘a very smart guy’, he had a ‘good feeling’ that a malaria drug would cure Coronavirus. This, said Fauci, was baloney. Much as I detest Boris Johnson, to his credit he hands over the microphone at his briefings to people who actually know what they are talking about. Why, in the midst of a pandemic, would I want to watch a movie about a pandemic? I’d forgotten I had ‘Contagion’ until I read an article saying Covid-19 had greatly boosted demand for virus movies. And the Techradar website published a list of the 10 best pandemic movies ever made. ‘Contagion’ tops the list and I own three others – ‘Twelve Monkeys’ (1995), ’28 Weeks Later’ (2007), and ‘Outbreak’ (1995). I intend watching the last three again. But without the chocolate biccies. Fear of adding inches to my waistline exceeds my fear of Covid-19.

Pet protection THE General Directorate of Animal Rights has issued guidelines on the permitted actions related to domestic animals, feeding of stray cats and animal protection centres during the term of the State of Alarm. With regards to dog walking, walks should be only for a short distance, as close to home as possible, and for exercise and physiological needs. They ask that you please keep your dog from coming into contact with other dogs or people in the street. Dog owners should carry a bottle of water mixed with detergent to clean urine and stool bags and they should sanitise their hands after placing bags in the bin. If you should need to walk your pet you
should prioritise these walks for a time when there are likely to be less people in the street. For example, early in the morning or late at night. Regarding animal feeding, if there are groups of feral cats, again the town hall ask that residents prioritise times of less influx and try to space it over as many days as possible. Those who feed and care for animals on farms and animal protection centres may continue to do so as long as they adhere to the above guidelines. The Consistory calls for resident collaboration and compliance with these rules, the sole purpose of which is to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
