These valiant heroes include first and foremost the health care professionals who continue to work tirelessly to treat those affected under such challenging and exceptional circumstances. Those who have worked long difficult shifts or have even come out of retirement to lend a hand and have been able to continue through panic and tragedy. We would also like to extend our thanks to the police offocers who are not only patrolling the streets with the uncertainty of what they might face, but displaying such bravery in continuing to serve the public by keeping them safe, off the streets and in their homes. Many people may go unnoticed behind the scenes but are certainly not taken for granted. These could be anybody from the cleaning and sanitation services, technicians, electricians and engineers helping to set up makeshift hospital spaces, to the charities and volunteers delivering food to the elderly and those in need or the people in pharmacies and supermarkets putting themselves in danger by being available to provide us with life’s necessities which will help us get through this unprecedented situation. From the moment the State of Alarm was put into play Euro Weekly News has been astonished at how individuals, communities and even large businesses have done their utmost to help with acts of kindness rarely seen in a normal day to day situation. The togetherness and selflessness are absolutely awe-inspiring and has shone fresh light on the grace of humanity and our fellow man. We must also thank you, the patient and brave public, for staying in your homes, comforting and supporting your family and showing such strength to get through this together. To watch you manage to stand on your balcony or at your window and exude positivity and community spirit every night at 8pm in a joint act of gratitude is uplifting.Finally, and by no means least, we are devoted to our loyal readers who have stuck by us through thick and thin. Please stay positive EURO WEEKLY NEWS CEO, Michel Euesden, urged everybody to “please stay positive” during an interview on Marbella TV, where she discussed the unprecedented challenges facing the nation during the coronavirus pandemic, and the duty the newspaper has to keep people informed. Donning protective gloves, only removing her mask to talk to host Nicole King, Michel said: “We have a duty of care to all of our readers to let them know what is going on in these difficult times as things are changing day by STICK TOGETHER: EWN Publishers, day and hour by hour. Steven and Michel Euesden. “We are still able to distribute our newspapers to supermarkets, which are still open, but we have Euro Weekly News online www.euroweeklynews.com and our Facebook: Euro Weekly Newspaper, which is getting more and more popular every day, bringing our readers the most up-todate news.” When asked what were the largest concerns facing the public, Michel replied: “I think the largest concerns are fundamental as we do not know how long this will last... the State of Alarm can be extended indefinitely. We need to make that clear to people. “But at the moment, we need to think about the basics, making sure our community has got shelter and food. That is our responsibility as people in the media. “What we have at the moment is ‘me’ becoming ‘we.’ WE have to take care of those around us, this is a great leveller. None of us are going to come out the other side free of damage, but together we can give each other peace of mind, I really believe that. We are all going to come out of this together, please stay positive.”

Support in a crisis PETRER Red Cross cares for 75 people every day during the coronavirus pandemic, with the NGO’s volunteers buying essentials and continually monitoring elderly and dependent people at risk. Maria Teresa Poveda, technical director of the humanitarian organisation said it has “expanded the Red Cross Response operation to help groups at risk so that they can have their basic needs guaranteed without being exposed to infection.” Every day, a team of 20 people carries out an average of 75 interventions in the Shelter and Immediate Response programmes to provide basic needs (non-perishable and fresh food, hygiene, nappies, medication, etc), manage on-site deliveries with State of Alarm security measures; do shopping for elderly people who

Back home SEVENTY Spaniards arrived at Alicante Airport having been repatriated amid a coronavirus pandemic and an uncertain period in Lithuania, Bali and Australia. The first 39 arrivals flew in from Bali, a 32-hour flight with Air Express which stopped off in Thailand, India, Russia and Lithuania. A further group of 31 who had been studying in Lithuania, also touched down on Tuesday, March 25, having flown with Avion Express. Among the passengers was the daughter of the former airport manager, Tomás Melgar, who is a medical student abroad, and a young waitress from La Nucia on the Costa Blanca who had been working in Australia. One for the kids AS more people stay home to selfisolate, people with young children may have the added strain of trying to keep the kids entertained. Edinburgh Zoo has revealed that they have seen a surge in the amount of people watching their animal webcams. Viewers are particularly enjoying watching the popular Edinburgh penguins, but they may get a bit more than they bargained for as March and April is when penguins are known to mate. The live cameras allow visual access to Edinburgh Zoo’s panda, penguins, koalas and tigers. Delighted animal fans took to social media to talk about how much they are enjoying watching the animals live. A HUGE gesture of solidarity saw 18 motorcyclists deliver more than 70 free pizzas to staff at Sant Joan Hospital in Alicante and several pharmacies last week. But this is just the latest show of support from Pizza Express in El Campello and Muchamiel, which has been distributing the takeaway favourite to workers on the frontline since the nationwide State of Alarm was declared. Employee Esteban García said: “We have distributed more than 1,000 free orders to the Local Police, Civil Protection, Guardia Civil and health centres in these municipalities.”

HAIR RAISING EFFORT WHERE there’s a will t h e re ’s a w a y, a n d Jody and Franco of Oceana Club in Benissa on the Costa Blanca, have found a hair raising way to help those in need during the nationwide ‘State of Alarm’ lockdown. Jody, founder of Grant A Wish charity, last week organised 25 food and hygiene packages which were distributed to those supported by Red Cross. But determined to do more, Jody, Franco, and her teenage sons Max and Ted, organised a sponsored head shave which raised almost €600 in less 24 hours, and more
than €1,000 to date. Jody told Euro Weekly News: “I got in touch with Red Cross and asked them how I could help.” Red Cross was delighted at the offer and asked if Jody could prepare emergency boxes of hygiene products and basic food essentials for the 25 people and families on their books. Jody did this, and now she and her family have raised enough money to prepare 50 more than boxes. Relief and bonus EL CAMPELLO Town Hall is proposing to freeze tax payments for businesses forced to close due to State of Alarm measures, and considering a ‘bonus’ incentive for those which reopen after the crisis with the same number of staff as before. The measure will affect the Property Tax (IBI), rubbish collection fees and any other fees regularly charged by the local administration. This measure would be applied generally to all businesses, but also on the table is a ‘double bonus’ for firms ‘that reopen with the same number of workers as they had before the shutters were lowered.’ This is likely to be a reduction in fees and taxes. The idea is to promote economic measures to ‘alleviate as much as possible the tax burden on local businesses and industries during the coronavirus crisis, which the authority believes is fair and necessary.’

SURVIVORS THE Ministry of Health has updated the figures for coronavirus in Spain and the number of total cases has now reached 94,417 nationwide. Reporting the number of fatalities is an important part of tracking the progression of this pandemic but we cannot forget how essential it is to report the number of patients who have recovered from this virus. On a brighter note, the number of patients who have recovered from the coronavirus in Spain is at the time going to print currently 19,259 and counting. Flattening the curve of infection is a collective effort. This crisis has highlighted the true meaning of solidarity between residents. This solidarity has al-

Applauding the survivors is just as important as mourning those who have unfortunately passed. Each day new videos are uploaded onto social media which feature patients leaving the ICU and returning home to their families. Hopefully
this is a trend we continue to see, as together we beat coronavirus.

Benidorm bar THE writer of hit TV show Benidorm teased Twitter fans with a ‘big announcement’ over the weekend before revealing he is quitting writing ‘for now’ to open a bar in the popular Spanish resort. Three year recovery AS the Costa Blanca lockdown period continues, the region is likely to hit a recession period due to the area being heavily reliant on tourism. Financial expert, millionaire Martyn James is the former owner of Stan James bookmakers before selling out for millions to Ladbroke. The heavy property and commodities investor warns: “I love the Costa Blanca and am always looking for more investments there but it’s going to be a bleak period ahead and I’m holding back right now as the prices will probably crash, I do though see a boom after a shortish recession with a full recovery by three years, the summer is now over trade wise I’m afraid. “It’s going to be a matter once lockdown finishes of grafting hard and fighting for survival and the toughest will survive,” James told the Euro Weekly News. He further added “Traders though shouldn’t despair, the business will return, with a burst of a boom period, clever business strategy and clever marketing will see many people fully recover the current losses, it’s all about hanging in there.”

NATURAL HERITAGE THE Department of the Environment has decided to bring the natural heritage of El Campello closer to all its residents through an initiative whereby,

€1 million aid
CALPE has prepared a package of measures to deal with the consequences of coronavirus and the State of Alarm, and will make a budget amendment of €1 million to make sure they are put in place. Mayor, Ana Sala, today announced that several lines of action are being established, on the one hand emergency social aid measures that will be activated immediately to make it possible to attend to the most vulnerable people, families at risk of exclusion and those whose situation has been aggravated by the State of Alarm. Another line of action is aid for commerce and the self-employed, the driving force behind the economy, to promote economic activity as soon as the State of Alarm ends. In addition to this, a series of fiscal measures have been taken, such as the elimination or reduction of certain taxes, such as the occupation of public roads or markets, or the extension of the payment of IBI.

Attack on disabled woman CRIME has halved in the Valencia region during the State of Alarm, but some criminals are still active, committing crime in broad daylight. On Friday, March 27, a court in Picassent remanded in prison a man who allegedly attacked and robbed a disabled woman who needed medical attention after a blow to the head. The assault occurred around midday Monday, March 23, in a residential area of Picassent. The offender, reportedly a drug addict with a police record, is accused of hitting the victim on the head with the handle of a knife and using threatening behaviour to get her credit card and pin number. The detainee then stole her car and went to a bank to withdraw money from the ATM. The Guardia Civil quickly managed to identify the suspect and arrested him the next day near his home in the district of Picassent. They also recovered the victim’s car. A Criminal Investigation Police team is now trying to establish if he is involved in any other similar incidents. The detained is accused of the crimes of robbery with violence and causing injury.

LA NUCIA Council has requested SUMA extend the deadline for payment of refuse and mechanical traction vehicles (IVTM) in line with the ‘State of Alarm’ extension. Fake test gang SCAM: The gang are using the ruse to gain entry to people’s homes.
POLICE in Valencia are warning of a ‘fake test gang,’ a group of criminals preying on the public’s Covid1 9 f e a r s t o g e t i n t o p e o p l e ’s homes. The Guardia and National Police say they have received reports of the criminals claiming they have tests for the coronavirus as an excuse to enter
homes to steal, commit fraud and even sexually abuse. In a post, La Sexta’s Manuel Marlasca of Más Vale Tarde said the gang reportedly “assures residents they have quick tests that, in a few minutes, would give a diagnosis of Covid19,” a ruse to access homes with criminal intentions.

Gym shut down A GYM owner in Alicante was arrested on Tuesday morning for opening up during the coronavirus lockdown and operating with the shutters down. Just before 9am, Alicante Local Police received a call to say the sports facility was still being used, with members using ‘a previously agreed code’ to get in. Officers arrested the Spanish owner for ‘crimes of resistance and disobedience to the Royal Decree of the State of Alarm.’

A MOTHER has hit out at the private education sector in Marina Baixa claiming schools are continuing to collect fees during the State of Alarm, ‘the worst world crisis since the Second World War.’ The woman, whose

CONTROVERSIAL French microbiologist Didier Raoult has managed to convince thousands, including US President Donald Trump, that a common antimalarial drug can save people infected by Covid-19. In just a short time Raoult has become France’s best-known doctor after announcing the Coronavirus ‘endgame’ on YouTube. The antimalarial chloroquine and its related compound, hydroxychloroquine, have been the focus of intense debate in France since Raoult, the head of a university hospital institute in Marseille, announced what he said were promising results on a small sample of patients. Since then, people

AN online 'stop smoking' campaign has been relaunched in El Campello amid the coronavirus crisis which causes critical respiratory problems. The council’s Social Welfare Department launched the ‘Get Away From Tobacco’ initiative in February, in conjunction with the Community Prevention Unit of Addictive Conducts (UPCCA). Sessions were held at El Barranquet Social Centre, but had to suspended under the ‘State of Alarm’ measures. But the council has announced it is relaunching the scheme via video conference.

DRUNK MAN Police find dead carers
Removing the cyclist from the ditch. OFFICERS of the Guardia Civil received information that a man was injured and unable to get out of a ditch in a rural road in a remote part of Mallen in Zaragoza. When they arrived they discovered a cycle on the road and after hearing moans and grunts coming from a ditch they found the cyclist lying in water and mud. They then realised that the reason for his incapacity was that he was completely drunk and was almost incoherent as well as possibly suffering from the first stages of hypothermia. Three officers managed to pull him out of the ditch and wrapped him in a ‘space blanket’ whilst calling for an am-
bulance to take him to hospital. About 20 minutes after helping load him onto the ambulance, the officers received a call from the paramedics asking for help as the man didn’t want to stay in the ambulance and was trying to escape. By the time they arrived at the ambulance it was agreed that there was no visible injury and rather than take him on to hospital, the officers decided to take him home to get him into a place of safety and to sleep it off. When he woke later, the 57-year-old discovered that he had received a ‘ticket’ for failing to comply with the containment measures established in the Royal Decree due to the State of Alarm.

HUNDREDS of late-night party revellers were arrested on an industrial estate in Malaga last night who ignored the State of Alarm law to stage an all-night rave. Working on a tip-off, the Guardia Civil burst into the complete surprise of the guests who were by now ‘off their heads’ as one officer described it. When they entered a separate room on the premises they realised why. Police seized a large amount of ‘party’ drugs at the event, arrests followed. Apart from closing the event down thousands of euros of fines were issued to the organisers and the mainly teenage audience. Many were in tears as they called their parents for help, some even frightened of the outcome.
A STUPID challenge which began on a new social media platform, TikTok, has spurred on a string of idiotic videos. Thankfully, social media is monitoring these videos and taking them down; however, there have been some cases of selfish individuals joining the bandwagon. This vile challenge began after an American ‘influencer’ named Ava Louise went viral after recording a video of herself licking a toilet bowl on a plane and with the caption ‘Coronavirus Challenge.’ She later admitted that her video was taken in a clean private jet and that she only took the video to go viral. However, this did not stop others around the world from recreating this ‘challenge’ to gain their five seconds of online fame. Some have even gone as far as dunking their whole head into a toilet bowl.

Dozens of local residents have tested positive for Covid-19 and there have been a number of deaths. The priest said it had been easy to get up on the roof and he hadn’t been at all frightened. Father Juan is offering daily live online masses for the faithful.
BABY BORN: Both mother and child are well. WHILE new cases of coronavirus continue to hit the headlines, a hospital in Asturias in northwest Spain is celebrating the birth of a healthy baby whose mother is being treated for Covid-19. The Ministry of Health of the Principality of Asturias reported the first birth of a patient affected by Covid-19. It was feared the baby would be born with the disease, but health bosses are delighted to confirm the baby is completely healthy. The mother gave birth on Wednesday March 25 to a baby boy at the Central University Hospital of Asturias (HUCA), by caesarean section in the 33rd week of gestation and the regional government said “mother and child are well.”

Drones watching out
VIGILANCE: Drones (inset) free police for urban patrols. DRONES used by Benidorm’s Local Police are flying over outlying and rural areas to ensure lockdown rules are being observed. “This drone vigilance will allow us to check that directives are being complied with in the open spaces and communal zones on urbanisations and also campsites,” said Lorenzo Martinez, Benidorm’s councillor responsible for Public Safety. “These must be closed to the public as they are other types of accommodation.” Martinez went on to explain that using the drones to remotely control these areas will free up the Local Police for other tasks.
“We can concentrate on patrolling Benidorm’s urban areas where there is a larger population and more movement of vehicles,” Martinez added. “This is also where the health centres and Social Services, which may need help from the Local Police, are located.” It was essential to step up vigilance to guarantee that the local population complied with the lockdown regulations to halt the advance of the virus, the councillor stressed. Local Police shifts have also been modified so that officers now work an entire week of 12-hour days with 14 days at home.
Cash in hand not necessary LOCAL banks contacted Benidorm Town Hall regarding the elderly and their pensions. They recommended online banking to avoid unnecessary journeys but recognised that not everybody is able to do this, while many like to go to the bank to withdraw money in person. “This is totally inadvisable at present,” Benidorm Town Hall stressed. “We should remind our older family members that it is not necessary to visit the bank and if they do need cash, they should use the cash machine.” It is anyway preferable for a family to go out on their behalf, the statement added. “At the present time we must help to protect
society, particularly the most vulnerable by enabling them to comply with the government’s
recommendations of avoiding journeys and queues in banks or other establishments.”

Albir - Alfaz NEWS New Albir road in the pipeline ALFAZ Town Hall has now accepted a tender to construct the new road that will give access to Albir. The decision was made on March 20, five days after the State of Alarm came into force. Six tenders for the €832,991 contract were received but only the chosen company, Pavasal, undertook to include improvements in its €761,999 offer. According to sources quoted in the local Spanish media, Pavasal has yet to present all the necessary documentation prior to the definitive allocation of the contract. The time limit for doing this will be counted seven days from the date when the State of Alarm is suspended. This new connection between the N-332 and the CV-753 will solve traffic holdups on the only existing link to Albir from the main road, especially during the high season. The project has been made possible by the closure of the Trinquet (Valencian handball stadium) and the turnoff on the N-332 will be level with the Castillo Conde de Alfaz on the Old Altea road.

HEALTH CENTRE: Prepared and ready to act if necessary.
ALBIR’S primary care health centre has now merged with Alfaz’s on the orders of the regional government. This was necessary to comply with a State of Alarm protocol requiring that an isolated facility should available if necessary. All patients should now use the health centre in Alfaz although the town hall’s Health councillor Marisa Cortes reminded residents that during the Covid-19 crisis they are asked to go only in cases that are absolutely necessary and cannot be postponed.
The Generalitat’s Health department has also recommended that the public should avoid using local primary care centres unless requiring immediate medical attention. In case of doubt they should first call either 966 870 080 or 966 870 082. The Albir health centre has now been cleaned, disinfected and repaired where necessary, Cortes announced. “Now we are prepared and if the need were to arise, we would have an adequately equipped facility attended by health professionals,” she said.
Ticket returns WITH lockdown extended until April 11, reimbursing tickets for the Mostra de Teatre cycle will begin on April 13. It will be impossible to make re-

Social distancing at sea FOR some months now an Environment department patrol boat has been keeping watch off the Sierra Helada coast. This service has been shared between Alfaz and Benidorm, as the national park lies within their boundaries, as well as Altea whose waters are included in the park’s maritime reserve. Altea’s Club Nautico also assists with the coastal patrols. The Guardia Civil, the Army’s UME unit, Proteccion Civil and the Policia Local are also patrolling the coast, Alfaz town hall announced, to ensure that govern-
ment restrictions on movement and self-isolation to limit the spread of Covid-19 are not flouted. Only fishing boats, boats attending to the local fish farms and boats belonging to public bodies may go to sea during the State of Alarm. The crew of the Environment department’s local boat are obliged to inform the Guardia Civil of any breach of the current regulations by any sailboats, motorboats and jet-skis. Anglers fishing from the land or from boats will also be under the control of the Environment department boat.

New players’ benches were recently installed at the municipal football ground to replace those that were badly damaged when Storm Gloria hit the Costa Blanca last January. “The new LED lighting enabling the stadium to be used at night will also bring savings of more than 70 per

Public Safety councillor Miguel De la Hoz also took part in the meeting with the Lieutenant and Warrant Officer from Altea’s Guardia Civil post, Local Police chief Miguel Perez, the head of the local branch of Proteccion Civil and the town clerk. Checking up on the elderly CALPE Town Hall is making regular calls to 3,000 elderly residents, asking how they are and if they need help. All are registered at the Mare de Deu de les Neus civic centre, which is coordinating
the initiative with a network of volunteers. The town hall intends that these periodic telephone calls will ensure that none of Calpe’s senior citizens, many of whom live alone, are ever in need of assis-
tance during the Covid19 lockdown. When a caller detects that someone requires help, they will coordinate with other municipal services to find a solution. Proteccion Civil volunteers, for instance, are already shopping for food and picking up prescriptions from the pharmacy for the elderly or those with mobility problems. If required, psychological help will be available over the phone or via Skype. Contact is also being made with Calpe’s many non-Spanish groups and associations, seeking volunteers who are willing to join the town hall initiative. “One of the main problems in helping elderly members of the foreign community is the language barrier,” municipal sources explained.

Calpe builds it up THE construction sector has been one of the few that continued to function during Spain’s nationwide lockdown. The Cost Blanca was hit hard by the 2008 economic crisis that followed the ‘boom and bust’ of the preceding years, but Calpe has gradually recovered from the former meltdown. Imposing developments have been completed in recent years and with others in the pipeline, construction on various sites has been going ahead
despite lockdown restrictions. Prior to the government’s announcement last Saturday that all non-essential work was to stop on March 28 until after Easter, Calpe’s mayor Ana Sala issued an edict reminding developers that although building was still allowed, it could only continue if all safety protocols were observed. The health of both the local population and construction personnel was an “absolute priority,” Sala said.

A new role for tractors LOCAL farmers and growers have provided
Teulada-Moraira Town Hall with three tractors
for street cleaning and disinfection.
Municipally-owned TEUMO Serveis, which cleans Teulada-Moraira’s streets, has added high-pressure hosing down with water and disinfectant to the usual manual and mechanical sweeping. This is carried out by two teams each morning and one at night throughout Teulada and Moraira. Meanwhile, the three tractors operated by TEUMO staff, are helping to clean and disinfect roads and surfaces in urbanisations as well as the communal rubbish containers.
Police deal with queries THE Local Police in Teulada-Moriara answered 260 calls from residents during the first week of the coronavirus lockdown. They also asked for the identification of 99 people who were out on the street and stopped 334 vehicles. They will answer queries on 965 740 158 (ext 1224) from 11am to 1pm and 5pm to 7pm each day.

Javea NEWS Builders won’t get shifts JAVEA Town Hall initially backtracked on its 8am3pm timetable for construction work. Javea Alicante Province’s Association of Property Developers appealed against the restriction, prompted by a complaint from an out-of-town firm, Javea’s mayor Jose Chulvi revealed. The order was ‘arbitrary’ and could lead to ‘financial liability,’ the association claimed. The town hall’s legal advisers upheld the objection and Chulvi had to withdraw the edict and allow builders to resume work each afternoon. This came before the national government’s announcement that non-essential work, including construction, would cease between March 28 and April 9. This decision was taken to avoid unnecessary journeys and movement during the present emergency situation, said Pedro Sanchez, the president of Spain.
We are sailing (still) WITH pleasure craft unable to sail at present, Javea’s Club Nautico is organising a series of virtual regattas. Two have already been held but a third regatta with 40 entries is scheduled to take place today, Thursday April 2, until Saturday. The virtual regatta is organised with strict and demanding rules as though participants were at sea, explained the Club Nautico’s sporting director Javier Momparler. The top 18 to emerge from three rounds will compete for a virtual trophy on April 9 and April 10, receiving their prizes during Sailing Week.

Foiled robbery in the port area THE Duanes estanco was the object of an attempted break-in, the second incident in three days. The licensed tobacco shops are increasingly targeted during the national lockdown as they are amongst the few shops that may continue trading during the coronavirus restrictions. The would-be thief attempted to break the window with a stone, but the safety glass only shattered, and he was unable to get inside. Three days earlier, another individual did manage to enter the same Duanes shop and make off with the cash register and takings after breaking down the door.

ARRESTS: Four people were arrested after officer was run over during patrol. A TRAFFIC police officer was run over and seriously hurt while carrying out a State of Alarm patrol on the A-42 on Wednesday March 25. The 40-year-old officer from the Leganes detachment suffered brain trauma and a fractured tibia after be-
ing struck by a vehicle at Casarrubuelos, Toledo. SUMMA 112 transferred the wounded man to Doce de Octubre Hospital in a ‘serious condition.’ Guardia Civil arrested four people travelling in the car.
Uni exams postponed UNIVERSITY entrance exams in Spain will be held between June 22 and July 10, or in worst case scenario before September 10. In addition, all primary and secondary exams have been suspended.
Minister of Education, Isabel Celaá, met with regional ministers, where it was agreed the university exam model ‘will be adjusted in accordance with the exceptional nature’ of the current ‘State of Alarm’ to
safeguard students’ health. The first phase of entry tests are normally carried out before June 16, with a second chance to pass available before July 10 or September 16, depending on the region.

UK ventilator order CONSPIRACY theories are by definition exactly that, but there may be some credence in the criticism of the UK gov ernment for its actions in placing a 10,000 unit order with Dyson for the production of much needed ventila tors. The Nantwich News, reported that the “Cabinet Office have confirmed and apologised for being slow to respond to all offers made via the BEIS registration page, but this has been due to the huge amounts of offers they have received.” Another company MEC Medical told BBC Newsnight that it was a leading manufacturer of appropriate equip ment but it had difficulty in receiving any initial interest to its offer of assis tance.
SPANISH airports operator AENA has been seriously affected by the cancellation of so many flights in and out of airports which it man ages and income has been re duced dramatically. It is taking measures to cut costs by €95 million per month, has access to €2 billion in emer gency loans if needed and will continue to charge airlines for leaving their planes at its airports (although they will not have to pay this immediately). Like other companies it is also suspending its dividend in order to protect liquidity.
LEGALLY SPEAKING Can they evict tenant? We recently rented out an apartment to people we know. They agreed to pay €400 per month and contribute to electric, gas, and water. The house is up for sale and they promised to move out and to show the apartment to prospective buyers. All this was agreed ver bally with nothing in writing. Then they demanded we buy them a new washing machine. When we refused, the peo ple stopped paying rent and utilities. Now their behaviour is turning to threats and intimidation. My questions are: A) Can we legally stop giving him electricity and hot water? B) What is the best way to get him out? Can I just lock him out? To evict them you will need a lawyer to apply for an eviction order from the court. This is called desahucio in Spanish. If you do not have a written contract, the pro cedure is basically the same. It will take six months or more and cost you at least €500.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT AT the time of writing, almost unbelievably, with the world facing an unprecedented holocaust some of the UK mosques are still refusing to close their doors! Consequently, those that are deciding to ignore the directives and common sense advice of the authorities are completely packed with worshippers. It is a known fact that Malaya’s source of Covid-19 began in a mosque. The disease not only engulfed Malaya but then spread to at least SIX more countries. Today I received a recent video from someone who filmed a car journey through London’s East end. The streets were packed with unmasked ethnic residents, queuing, shopping and completely ignoring the government’s directive to stay indoors and self-isolate. ‘So what’? I hear some of the more cynical among you observe. ‘If they want to take chances with their lives so be it.’

But it doesn’t end there does it? When these people start dropping like flies, it is the unbiased emergency services that will suffer the most. It will also result in thousands of hospital places being occupied by a self-centered populace who did nothing to assist the country
in its battle to survive this horror. It will also subsequently deny beds and respirators to thousands of the indigenous population, many of whom have already fought in two world wars and have now had to endure even more hardship and depravation in their efforts to fight
yet another enemy that threatens the UK and its citizens. And what happens when the women refuse to be touched by male emergency workers or doctors!? I truly do despair of this section of the UK; large numbers of the public who have no intention of ever integrating with their fellow citizens. I also sympathise with the victims of physical abusers that must be rampant during this close down emergency, particularly in households that consider women second class citizens! In its time honoured way I also anticipate a positive tsunami of ‘claims’ and legal shenanigans from people citing violations of human rights or PC biased decisions when all this nightmare is at an end. I can almost hear the lawyers and legal sharks rubbing their hands from here! There should most certainly be legislation introduced to create some form of legal immunity from all deci-
sions taken during this crisis. The idea of droves of court cases dragging on for years, achieving nothing but a very healthy lining to the pockets of a section of our professional leech brigade truly does stick in the craw of human decency and needs to be avoided at all cost. Finally to all readers of our great publication, and indeed to all at the EWN who are managing to keep the ‘wheels’ in motion, I wish you all health, strength and a positive deluge of love and good wishes as we continue to seek that elusive light at the end of this dark disease ridden tunnel. One thing you can be totally sure of is, that given time and with the resourcefulness of the human spirit we will undoubtedly prevail. God bless us all. CORONA BABIES GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY FIRSTLY, I wish to extend my sincere condolences to the families and friends of all who have lost loved ones across the planet. My household has experienced sadness too, learning this week that a close family friend died in Milan, due to the virus. Living in Spain, a wonderful country that’s currently going through hell, I've witnessed, first hand, the amazing effort by the Spanish frontline services, as well as the majority of the citizens. For years, I've admired the Spanish, always strong, always polite, and always putting family first. The people of Marbella adapted quickly to the current regime, and essential trips to the grocery store, something very new for me, have been an uplifting experience in many ways. Seeing humans exude kindness and support for each other, gives us great hope, at a time when we need it most. Okay, so we may no longer be able to go to lunch at our favourite restaurants every day, and cocktail hour may now take place at home, but life keeps going, and so must we. In a long list of family traditions, martini time is one rule we’ve strictly adhered to for generations. Always at home, always at five o’clock, and always requiring correct attire. While it may feel as if old rules have gone out the window, making way for the new, this is one rule I insist must continue. As we sat by the fire discussing the news of the day, all of which Covid-19 related, my friend Paolo asked our thoughts on Corona Babies. “Imagine in nine or 10 months, there’ll be a baby boom like never before!” he said in his strong Italian accent, as he puffed on a Monte Cristo. “All those couples trapped at home, killing time making babies,” he laughed. I guess he made a good point. Does that mean, in nine months’ time, nappies will replace loo roll as the hot new commodity? Should we invest in Pampers now? What will the ‘hot’ names be for these new-born boys and girls? At dinner, we used FaceTime to invite others to help fill our usually full table. Somehow, we
DRESS CODE: Now is surgical gloves. cooked enough pasta to feed an army, and we managed to eat it all. “A Corona baby? Are you mad?” screeched our good friend Cristina, who joined us via the small screen from Rome. “You must remember, darlings, being trapped at home with our partners, may result in divorces over babies!” She laughed, although I could sense that on day 19 of lockdown with her husband, she may not be joking. The following morning, I took my dog Henry up the street for a walk, happy to see that the streets of Los Monteros were completely isolated. As someone used to lunching every day, hence my nickname being Sir Lunchalot, I now have a very different daily dress-code. My old routine required numerous outfit changes - gym, lunch, dinner. These days I find myself surviving in sportswear, complimented by a face mask and surgical gloves. So, you can understand why, even though the house feels empty, it feels good to dress for martini time. Making it a sense of occasion, and I know my mother would be proud, as would my late grandmother. Another thing, to avoid the chance of divorce or singledom, we should all try to make an effort. Trust me, life in quarantine, feels and looks much better when you dress up.

As everybody else in the country and maybe soon the world, I am isolated in my house. It’s just me and the dog and though she is great company lack of human contact is getting me down. I have exhausted all the TV series I had in mind and have eaten all my goodies and really need to start exercising. However, the most exciting part of the day is at 8pm when I can stand on my balcony and celebrate with my neighbours. Although they are mostly Spanish and I don’t speak the language perfectly, I feel included, I feel part of the world. This social occasion, though only for 10 minutes is enough to get me through my day. My neighbour puts on ‘I

Signs of hope FOR many of the least secure newspaper titles, the virus could sound the death knell after years of struggle. The question is whether the pandemic could lead to the death of print itself? That this is even being contemplated at a time when the need and demand for news and information are at an alltime high is absurd. Traffic to online news sites is up across the board while viewing figures for TV public service broadcasters are at levels not seen since the financial crisis. Many companies have suspended publication of a physical edition until it becomes viable to print again. One look at the largest advertisers in print media points to how potentially catastrophic coronavirus is for the industry in general. However, there are signs of hope amid the warnings for local newspapers as the world needs good journalism more than ever and people also urgently need verified information in the face of not only an unprecedented health emergency, but technology’s ability to spread fake news. What’s more, the social distancing measure being brought in to fight coronavirus makes local news even more important to strengthen and build on community spirit. No one knows how long this pandemic will last or exactly how much damage it will cause. At the end of it, it is to be hoped that some local papers at least are still available to help rebuild and reassure.

Ignorance is bliss DEAR Euro Weekly, As a long-time resident in Spain, it is a relief to see the government here acting so decisively. Of course, there are constraints to our freedom of movement but that is a temporary inconvenience. In contrast, I witness the dithering and delay of Boris Johnson when he should be decisive. From pictures in the national press, it seems a lot of people in the UK have chosen to ignore his advice. No doubt he will assure the population that he is doing his best - but if this is his best it’s just not good enough. We have family and friends who are being placed at risk because the British PM seems woefully unprepared. A sad day indeed for our ‘home country.’ Steve Marshall

WHEN we discuss health and advice we’re given by experts, you always get the internet/armchair ‘doctors’ popping up. These people have no medical training whatsoever but think it’s fine to shove false information and conspiracies down our throats. I’ve seen it many times. ‘Educate yourself,’ they say… Which means watch YouTube conspiracy videos. Whilst so high on pot, it’s to the point of paranoia! Anti-vaxxers are the worst. In my experience, they are some of the most egotistical people I have ever come across. Their desire to be right completely overrides everything. Logic, expertise, even lives. They pray on the desperate, vulnerable and naive. Money is usually their motivation. You have a look at their social media pages and more than often they’re flogging snake oil rubbish. Quite ironic they then accuse the ‘Big Pharma’ of being money orientated! Recently, I’ve come across the Corona conspiracists. One man spent quite a lot of time on social media today telling me I’m wrong because I think the UK s h o u l d have a proper policed lockdown, like
here in Spain. He, like a few other idiots think the virus is man-made and a conspiracy to control us all. He said he refuses to social distance himself. Used boring cliché phrases like ‘I’m not a sheep.’ So, while Spain are using ice rinks to store the dead, you have idiots like him roaming the streets of the UK, without any consideration for others’ lives. Their own egos and desire to be an individual override everything, as always. I’m all for free speech - I mouth off a lot online myself. I just wonder - where do you draw the line? Pages like Natural News and Info Wars were taken down by Facebook. Conspiracies may seem harmless. But quite frankly, they aren’t. Info Wars, for example - because of their conspiracies, teachers from Sandy Hook Primary School had to move house several times due to death threats. Personally, I think the best way to deal with conspiracies is to laugh at them. But sadly, a lot of people do believe fake news. They leave their children unvaccinated. Pass the Corona Virus to innocent people. Even try and murder schoolteachers. Because of the internet, we have access to so much valuable information. But also, false and potentially dangerous information. Where do you draw the line? Anyway. It’s so disappointing all the flights out of Malaga are cancelled. Because next week I was due to visit my friend Elvis on his little island again. Hope he’s doing ok out there with Diana and Lord Lucan.

Bumbling around the Internet MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I GOT a message from my daughter asking me what was I doing on Bumble? What? What’s Bumble? Well my ‘trapped at home friends’ I’ll tell you what Bumble is. It’s a dating app and someone had decided to put a picture of me, in my wheelchair, on there as their profile picture. They didn’t use my name - just my picture. Now why would you use a picture of a 70-year-old man, in a wheelchair, as a profile picture on a dating app? What sort of date are you looking for? Didn’t make any sense. My daughter responded saying I looked nice, to see if there was any response, but I decided it was best to report it and get it removed. In fairness to Bumble it was removed immediately. Now surprisingly all that didn’t make me grumpy. In fact, I thought it was quite amusing. What did make me grumpy was my conversation with Bumble. I asked them why they just accepted profiles without verifying
them by sending real time photos and they said they ‘don’t require it but strongly encourage it.’ I also said I wanted the contact details they had on file for that bogus account. Of course they refused stating that their guidelines are in place for the safety of all their users and the decision to keep this information private is not one they made lightly. I told them it was ridiculous that they protected the fraudsters. Why did they have any rights? And that they could do what they like with no redress except having the account blocked if someone notices. This company is valued at over a billion dollars so, of course, they don’t give a crap about anything except revenue. How can it be that the only person that suffers is the person whose picture is used? Bumble say you can report it to the police but can you imagine how interested the UK police are going to be about you having your picture put on a USA owned dating app? We had a few more to and fros but I went as far as I could be bothered with. It’s a very simple fix - anyone who joins any type of dating app only has to verify the picture they put on the site with a passport or driving licence or any other photo ID. It would stop the problem instantly.

Try arranging your index and middle fingers into peace signs, join into a diamond shape and place your chin in the hollow. Sweep outw a rd s a l o n g a n d u p your jaw. Place your peace signs upright with each finger hugging the sides of your cheekbones in a V shape. Push up and repeat. Now place your index finger on the outer corner of your eye pulling it taut. Use your middle finger from the same hand to sweep underneath your eye in an a rc h , p r e s s i n g a l o n g the top of your cheekbone. Repeat the above move but taking your middle finger along the top of your eyebrows instead of underneath your eye. Firmly press in an arch from the beginning of your eyebrow o u t w a rd s , working along the brow bone.

LAST week on March 30 we celebrated World Bipolar Day, It’s a day the world comes together to raise awareness for this mental health disorder that affects 46 million people around the world. So, having celebrated last week, here are some aspects of bipolar disorder that are important to understand, so you can help combat social stigma: • Bipolar affects every part of your life: It may be difficult to fully understand the strain bipolar disorder can take on someone because it is an invisible illness. You look perfectly fine but it can be crippling - from intense relationships, working, and all aspects of everyday life - from sleeping to showering. • Bipolar disorder has many causes, from genetics to life events: There is no single genetic change, life event, or chemical brain imbalance that could be the root cause of bipolar disorder. Most of the time it is either a hormonal imbalance or a traumatic life event can trigger bipolar disorder. • Bipolar disorder rarely exists alone: As if a mood disorder that involves deep low depression and manic episodes wasn’t enough to deal with, bipolar disorder can also come hand in hand with mental health illness, like OCD and Anxiety. • Everyone’s bipolar disorder is different: no two people have the exact same symptoms and each diagnosis can be very different. The same medication or therapies do not work for all of us. However, there are two main types of bipolar disorder: Bipolar I which is characterised by one or more manic episodes that last at least a week; and Bipolar II, which is characterised by more depressive episodes. • There are many celebrities that live with bipolar disorder: Celebrities including Demi Lovato, Mariah Carey, Mel Gibson, Russell Brand , amongst so many others are using their voice to beat bipolar disorder stigma. • There may be a creativity
connection: Did you know that World Bipolar Day occurs on Vincent van Gogh’s birthday? Van Gogh, considered one of the most greatest artists of all time, was diagnosed as having bipolar disorder. • It is life-threatening, and support is so important : An estimated one in five people diagnosed with bipolar disorder die by suicide. World Bipolar Day is an opportunity to show those living with the day-to-day challenges of this condition they are not alone, they have your support, and there is always hope. Stigma usually stems from ignorance or fear. For example, when a person tells a friend or an acquaintance that he or she has bipolar disorder, the response might be: • “Oh, everybody’s a little bipolar, why are you so special?” • “Oh, man, you’re one of them? Gosh, that's tough.” • “You mean you might flip out and start shooting people?” Unfortunately, for some individuals with bipolar, stigma can cause them to hide their diagnosis or it creates a great deal of shame. As a consequence, many people with bipolar don’t get the right treatment or the support they need to manage their illness. BARRY DUKE D I D I re a l l y s l e e p u n t i l 2.30pm? Ridiculous! But that’s what happened when I pitted myself against my computer’s Scrabble board. When I glanced up at the clock it was 5.00am, and the stats showed I was losing many more games than winning. This, I reckon, is because the software recently updated itself, and in so doing began using words that aren’t English. ‘Nkosi,’ the Zulu word for king, is one, but when I use the same word in Spanish - ‘rey’ - the computer says no. In normal times I’d never spend five hours playing computer games, but there’s nothing remotely normal about being quarantined. So days and nights seem to have more hours in them than I know what to do with. The recently-opened convenience store near our apartment

CONTAGION: I never imagined how prescient it would turn out to be. offers some relief, but at the same time it’s doing my waistline no favours. Never have I bought so many chocolate biscuits to nibble while staring at the TV screen. Last night I got through two
packets watching people panic buying in supermarkets while trying hard to keep their distance from one another. Grave voices were saying ‘wash your hands frequently, don’t touch your face, don’t go out unless you re-
ally have to and we’re working as hard as possible to find a cure for a virus that we think originated from bats in China.’ Was I watching the news? No! On the screen was a movie made in 2011. The plot of ‘Contagion’ is uncannily like the current situation. When I first saw it I rated it highly but never imagined how prescient it would turn out to be. The plot departs from the reality of Covid-19 in only one respect: the people advising social distancing and speaking about the efforts to find effective treatments and a vaccine are eminent scientists, not politicians. In the movie the President of the US is not seen; he’s holed up in a bunker. If only the same could be said of the muppet Donald Trump. In a few sentences in a recent White House briefing he succeeded in flatly contradicting Anthony S Fauci, Director of the
National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and insulting an NBC News correspondent, Peter Alexander, calling him a ‘very bad reporter.’ Worst, Trump suggested that, because he’s ‘a very smart guy’, he had a ‘good feeling’ that a malaria drug would cure Coronavirus. This, said Fauci, was baloney. Much as I detest Boris Johnson, to his credit he hands over the microphone at his briefings to people who actually know what they are talking about. Why, in the midst of a pandemic, would I want to watch a movie about a pandemic? I’d forgotten I had ‘Contagion’ until I read an article saying Covid-19 had greatly boosted demand for virus movies. And the Techradar website published a list of the 10 best pandemic movies ever made. ‘Contagion’ tops the list and I own three others – ‘Twelve Monkeys’ (1995), ’28 Weeks Later’ (2007), and ‘Outbreak’ (1995). I intend watching the last three again. But without the chocolate biccies. Fear of adding inches to my waistline exceeds my fear of Covid-19.

Balcony Bingo BALCONY BINGO! While Ireland, like the UK, looks to Italy and Spain for the emerging Covid19 pattern, it seems the Irish have a unique way to keep spirits up and pass the time. The Italians take to their balconies to sing, and the Spanish applaud the hard work of the medical and emergency staff, but in Dublin’s fair city, the residents of one block of flats decided to play balcony bingo. The social distancing game was hosted by a resident, who set up a microphone and speakers in front of the building, to entertain those at the doors of their homes. The mood was high during the game, as one family on a second floor balcony, called

The man behind the plan is local, Michael Larkin, who has admitted that he has never even played a game before, but wanted to get his neighbours together in the safest, most fun way possible. Dressed in a white disposal boiler suit, mask and gloves, he set up his calling station on top of the sheds, in the middle of the courtyard at the front of the complex. While things were being set up and the bingo cards distributed to the balconies, his daughter Hollie acted as DJ, opting for Tina Turner and Whitney Houston to set the tone. Despite extremely cold weather, the game went on for over two hours, with prizes such as Easter Eggs for the children, as well as highly sought after loo roll for the adults. Due to the success of the game, it looks set to become a regular thing during the ongoing crisis.
Employee bonus THE Alcampo, Carrefour and Intermarche supermarket chains in France are paying a €1,000 bonus to employees working in the stores during the coronavirus crisis in line with a French government recommendation for big companies. There are no fiscal charges for the businesses, and the payments can be made up until the end of June. Alcampo said it was giving the bonus to all cashiers, shop workers, warehouse staff and employees doing home deliveries. According to French press 65,000 Al Campo workers will benefit. The move was welcomed by the union
