THE Balearic Islands have blocked the entry and departure of people with just a few exceptions and closed airports and ports in a bid to try and contain the spread of the coronavirus crisis. Balearic Island government President Francina Armengol announced the drastic move of imposing “maximum restriction” on Tuesday following a telematic meeting with the management of the region’s ports and airports. By then the islands had registered 92 coronavirus cases. Armengol explained the measures affect all private national and international flights and maritime transport, apart from the transport of goods. This means that commercial flights, air taxis and private jets cannot operate in and out of the islands, with just a handful of exceptions on national routes. Only one flight a day per company from
TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia to Palma and one from Barcelona and Madrid to Menorca and Ibiza is permitted. There will also be a flight per day per company in each direction between Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca. These flights cannot be full, but must fly at a third of capacity in order to allow for a safe distance between passengers. The disembarkation of boat passengers from regular ships, pleasure boats, private and rented, is also blocked. Only the drivers of lorries carrying goods are allowed to disembark. Balearic residents are permitted to return to the islands and tourists are allowed to leave.
As of Tuesday there were some 25,000 tourists left on the islands. Armengol said the plan was to organise an organised repatriation. Other exceptions are cases of urgent medical treatment and workers in essential services. The Transport Ministry order also allows the Balearic Government to carry out health controls on travellers at ports and airports, and which everyone arriving from the exterior has to go through. In addition, passengers on the few planes and ships which are allowed to function have to fill out a Balearic Public Healthy Directorate General questionnaire which will be used for screening purposes by health professionals.

Outburst of hope RESIDENTS of Spain have been showing their resilience amid national coronavirus emergency lockdown by expressing their gratitude for the hard work of health workers, currently battling the pandemic by applauding and cheering from their balconies. These acts of appreciation are being carried out at 8pm or 9pm depending on the area. This nationwide event is being coordinated through social media and it will continue to happen every evening until the lockdown is over. This simple act of gratitude has quickly turned into a ray of hope amongst residents nationally and inspired those facing lockdown abroad. Spain will continue to stand behind its health workers following the challenging times ahead.
State of Alarm arrest A 48-YEAR-OLD man in Palma became the first person in the Balearic Islands to be arrested for violating the state of alarm restrictions. Police came across him sitting on a bench in the city’s Plaza de Sa Feixina on Tuesday morning. They asked him several times to leave and go back home, but he refused, reportedly telling the officers he would do what he felt like. The police subsequently detained him on a charge of serious disobedience. On the same day, National and Local Police reported a further 30 people in Palma and seven in Manacor for being out on the street without a justifiable reason and ignoring police instructions.

Health centre plan THE Balearic Island Government’s Health and Consumer department has reorganised medical centres into two circuits, respiratory and general, due to the coronavirus situation, Mallorca Primary Attention general director Miquel Caldentey has announced. Speaking to press on Monday, Caldentey remarked that it was a “complicated day for patients due to the new organisation.” He explained that before people go to health centres they should call first to find out whether they should go to respiratory or general. “Normally an appointment is requested by internet or in person at the health centre with the doctor, paediatrician, midwife… but

SPAIN’S 15-day official state of alert due to the major coronavirus crisis means the government has imposed extraordinary restrictions countrywide on movement and daily life to protect public health and safety, contain the spread of Covid-19 and to reinforce the public health system.
• Staying at home and exceptions
Everyone is expected to stay inside their homes unless they have a valid reason for going out. People are allowed to circulate on public streets to buy food, pharmaceuticals and essential goods, for assistance at medical centres and to get to and from their workplace. The circulation of private vehicles for the above and to fill up at service stations is allowed. Activities have to be carried out individually, with the exception of accompanying people with a disability or for another justifiable reason.
• Education
All public and private schools, universities and education centres have been closed, but online educational activities or distance learning continue where possible.
• Open and shut
All businesses have had to close with the exception of those selling food and drink and essential items, pharmaceuticals, medication, and hygiene products, the press, vehicle fuel, technological and telecommunications equipment, animal food, and launderettes. The doors are closed to all museums, libraries, monuments, entertainment venues, sports facilities and leisure outlets.
• Civil and religious ceremonies
Any civil or religious ceremony has to be in accordance with the measures on avoiding gatherings of people, and with the guarantee, people are at least one-metre apart from each other.
• Public transport
Public transport is still running to enable people to get to work if they have to and to access basic services. Operators are required to take measures to ensure passengers are well separated and to clean vehicles daily in accordance with Health Ministry recommendations.
• Enforcement and fines
Law enforcement and State Security forces are ensuring compliance with extraordinary restrictions. People who do not obey the rules could face fines of up to €600,000 or even a one-year prison sentence in the most serious of cases.

TRAVEL ADVICE UPDATE THE FCO has updated its Travel Advice to state that from Tuesday March 17 until the end of the State of Alarm, Spain is closing its borders to those who wish to enter the country, with some exceptions. The land borders remain open for those leaving Spain. At present, air and maritime borders will remain open following the restrictions put in place by the Spanish government in response to the outbreak of coronavirus (Covid-19). On March 14, the Spanish government introduced a State of Alarm, which imposes significant restrictions on movement throughout Spain in response to the coronavirus outbreak. Transport services will be operating at reduced levels. Public gatherings are banned, most shops, many businesses and all schools and universities are closed, and residents have been instructed to remain at home as much as possible. There are limited, specific exceptions to the requirement to remain at home, in particular
in order to buy food or other essential items, to return home to the primary residence, to go to work if unable to work from home and to carry out caring or similar duties. We keep our travel advice under constant review and recommend that British nationals sign up for alerts, so they know when it has been updated. Urgent measures A NUMBER of urgent measures have been adopted by the Spanish government in a bid to protect the public after coronavirus plunged the country into an official ‘state of alarm.’ The moves are aimed at preventing the spread of the virus, maintaining social protection for employees and the self-employed and ensuring the supply and best distribution of medicines and health products. As such, workers who are infected with COVID-19 or forced into periods of isolation for their own protection, will be eligible for temporary incapacity benefit. The European Council held an extraordinary meeting on March 10, during which Heads of States identified four priorities. Firstly, to limit the spread of the virus. Members reiterated ‘as a maximum priority’ the health of citizens must be protected, and that all actions be based on scientific and health authority recommendations, with proportionate measures. Secondly, the consistent
supply of medication. It was agreed to entrust the Commission with the analysis of the public’s needs and the implementation of initiatives to avoid a shortage, in collaboration with industry representatives. Thirdly, the promotion of research, in particular for the development of a vaccine. And fourthly, deal with the socio-economic consequences. The Union and its members pledged to make use of all resources to support workers and small businesses. To respond to these priorities, the European Commission is working on two fronts sanitary and economic. On the health front, a number of actions have been announced. These include the coordination of measures through daily conferences with the Ministers of Health and Interior and the organisation of a team of epidemiologists and virologists from different Member States to propose guidelines at European level. An inventory of protective equipment and available
breathing apparatus is being drawn up, together with an assessment of production and distribution capabilities. And there will be a strengthening of a European initiative to fund specific research on coronavirus, with €140 million of public and private funding for vaccine research, diagnosis and treatment. The Spanish government approved measures on Saturday which means self-employed workers infected with coronavirus, or in forced quarantine will be eligible for financial aid. The pledge of support is reportedly ‘unlimited’ and will mean that self-employed workers who are forced to stay at home will be considered in the same way as employees on official sick leave by the Department of Social Security. Employers and people who work on a freelance basis will be able to postpone their Social Security payments for three consecutive months in areas and sectors which will be outlined by the health authorities. The contributions will be deferred for 12 months.

PROTECTION WITH PETS NOW we are all obliged to self-quarantine in our homes, some of you may be wondering what rules apply to our furry fourlegged friends. For those with pets at home, this is the article for you. Firstly, it is important to note that neither dogs nor cats are carriers of the COVID-19. Maria Van Kerkhove, from the World Health Organisation, has confirmed that “there has been no evidence to suggest that this virus can be transmitted from humans to pets nor from pets to humans.” Social media is littered with fake information so stick to reliable news sources; pets cannot trans-
mit the virus to humans so please do not abandon them. However, there are still some guidelines on how to care for your pet during this difficult time. Although the quarantine requires all residents to restrict their freedom of movement, the government has taken into account that almost 50 per cent of households in Spain live with a pet. Therefore, the government has allowed for petowners to take their dog(s) for a walk, as long as they do not take advantage of the circumstances. This means avoiding all social contact, no walking with friends or large groups. You
must walk your pet alone, as going for a stroll with a partner or child may incur sanctions from the police. This is because walking your pet is a necessity and exception to the quarantine rules, it is not meant to be a leisurely activity. Some hygiene guidance to take into consideration when caring for your furry companion is to always wash your hands after petting your animal, and to avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Clean their paws and tail before getting home just as an extra precaution. If you do test positive for coronavirus, find someone to take care of your pet. If this is impossible, make sure you regularly wash your hands, avoid physical contact and wear a mask in the animal’s presence. If you do test positive with coronavirus, you may no longer leave the house to walk your pet, you must stay indoors at all times. Although they cannot transmit or catch coronavirus, it’s important to maintain the correct hygiene measures with your pets. It is always better to be safe than sorry. Amongst the other vital businesses, such as supermarkets of pharmacies, veterinary clinics and pet stores will remain open. Call in advance to confirm that your local business is open. Please treat your pets with love and kindness.

POLICE arrested a woman in Palma on Sunday after she tested positive for coronavirus and walked out of the Son Espases hospital without authorisation. The police action came at the request of the Balearic Island Health Department Directorate General of Public Health to locate the patient and transfer her to hospital. Officers found the woman at the hotel in which she was staying and taken back to the hospital, where she was admitted as a matter of obligation.

Unique coins THE Mallorca government’s Heritage department has acquired two coins dating back to the island’s Muslim period which were auctioned off last week in Barcelona. Coin expert Antoni Calero has described the coins as “unique and of great value,” and had warned that the items of great importance to Mallorcan heritage could have ended up in foreign hands. The Heritage department headed by Kika Coll therefore decided to buy the coins for some €35,000. One of the coins is a 12th century 3.3 gramme gold dinar minted by Ishaq Ibn Muhammad from the Banu Ganya dy-
nasty. They ruled in Mallorca before the island was conquered by King Jaume I. According to Calero there is only one similar example, which is in the Madrid National Archaeological Museum. In fact the coin was listed as among the museum’s best 100 monetary pieces. The starting price for the coin was €30,000 and it was sold for €31,500. The other coin is a 3.6 gramme silver dirhem from the same era, which is also in very good condition, and which was described as “extremely rare.” Its starting price was €3,000, and it was sold for €3,800. Both coins will form part of the Museu de Mallorca collection.

Racers stopped in their tracks LOCAL POLICE stopped illegal racers in their tracks in the Son Oms district of Palma. More than 350 people had gathered with more than 100 vehicles at around midnight at an industrial estate with the intention of running high-speed races, Spanish press reported. Police got wind of the plans however. A team of officers was dispatched which prevented the racing from going ahead. They identified 109 people altogther, 109 of them drivers of the vehicles. They also carried out an exhaustive check on the car documentation to verify whether everything was in order. Police immobilised two of the vehicles due to significant irregularities and issued sanctions for around 30 traffic violations. Nearly 20 of the vehicles had altered exhaust pipes which meant they made a huge racket when the driver put their foot on the accelerator. Four of the cars had not been MOTed and three lacked insurance. Officers could not detain anyone for reckless driving though as none of the vehicles were moving at the time of the intervention.

Wave of support FOLLOWING the national Government declaration of a ‘state of alarm’ for at least 15 days to combat the spread of coronavirus, residents and holidaymakers in Benidorm have pledged their support to local businesses, health care professionals and all those affected. Ed Cullen said: “Our thoughts are with the people who live and work in Benidorm at this time. Yes, we have been inconvenienced by losing our holidays, yes, we have lost money... but this is a short term issue for us. “For the businesses in Benidorm, this could have long term repercussions. Think about others at this time. Good luck to all the ‘locals’ in Benidorm." Cat Sanders added: “Here’s hoping that when all this confusion is over and the virus is contained, that we can all go back to Benidorm. We will be celebrating by going to pubs, restaurants and the beach. Spending money, being kind and tipping the waiters and cleaning staff who will be really struggling the next few weeks. Benidorm is our second home, a place we all love. Will rise again.” Adele Saunders has lived in Benidorm for four years, and said it isn’t really important whether or not the public is happy with the government restrictions or not. “It’s a reality, and we have to do everything we are asked to do to protect ourselves and others. I’ve never seen the streets the way they are today, completely empty barring a few people, but we must follow the guidelines to get through this.” Yolanda Freeman said: “I’m here with friends and we have an apartment until

It’s true that we need to take this virus seriously. It’s capable of causing severe illness, death, and drastic long-term changes to how we live and work. It could even cripple the economy. It’s easy to stay focused on those calamities as they seem to be the only topics covered on the news. But those thoughts would be counterproductive. Obviously, there are things you need to know about the coronavirus outbreak to protect yourself and those around you, but you do not need to become a COVID19 expert, nor do you need to hear about every unpleasant detail from dawn until bedtime. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF FREE TIME: Negative thoughts are counter productive.

WITH shops, beaches and bars closing down as Spain’s Costa del Sol begins to get ready for an emergency lockdown will the residents of the region struggle to cope during a period of isolation? As we have reported there have been long supermarket queues and bare shelves. Can the expat community rally together and push through such a confusing time and go back to normal at the other side? Walking through the streets of Fuengirola it seems that some residents are blatantly ignoring the suggestion to stay indoors and bars like La Sureña next to the train station were quite busy, patrons had even brought their toilet rolls supplies. However, some were very conscious of the risks, such as

Take a daily inventory. Close your day, every day, with a positive acknowledgement of something you accomplished, learned or are grateful for. It will help dilute some of the negativity you’ve absorbed and remind you that not everything that’s happening right now is bad or depressing.

COVID19 self test SPAIN’S Ministry of Health has created a coronavirus ‘self test’ online. Concerned members of the public can check symptoms and there is a questions and answers section related to COVID19. The interactive test has been developed by health personnel, and ‘provides the population with an agile and immediate system in which to find updated information on issues related to the coronavirus.’ A Conselleria Sanidade health spokesperson said: “The fact that the test customises answers through specific questions, makes it possible to offer recommendations adapted to the particular situation of each person.” There are four options, depending on the scenario - the option for people with possible symptoms, another for those in isolation offering advice, a third with recommendations for people who have tested positive and a fourth offers general information. It will run alongside other Ministry of Health initiatives, such as the freephone 900 400 166. Coronavirus crisis impact THE Euro Weekly News spoke to Costa Almeria residents, visitors and business owners in Mojacar to get their views on the coronavirus crisis. “I think the whole world has gone completely mad and it’s all just media hype. The beach ban just seems completely ridiculous,” visitor Tammy Sebire told EWN. Her friend Paula Jeeps agrees. Paula and her husband, who are renting in Mojacar while house hunting, are staying upbeat though. She said they plan to enjoy themselves and “just carry on with the G&Ts! “Knowing what’s happened in Italy they should have done it sooner. I think it’s the only way to stop it,” commented ‘swallow’ Carol Fisher on the drastic restrictions under the state of alarm, despite question marks about whether she and husband Allan can get back to the UK from Santander next month. Carol is not daunted by the “enforced staying in” as long as she has access to basic necessities as she has plenty of hobbies, although bird watching enthusiast Allan is less happy. One issue Carol and Allan did raise was dog walking, and whether that was going to be difficult. Geraldine and Brian Jones are in their 80’s and like the Fishers spend winter in Costa Almeria and summer in the UK. Geraldine’s main concern is not knowing how long the coronavirus crisis is going to last and whether they’ll be “trapped” in Spain
RESIGNED: Mojacar Playa restaurant owner Jenna Mincheva believes the lockdown is the only option. Louise Pallett, who has lived in Mojacar for 18 years, is another who believes the restrictions are necessary, especially for the elderly. “I’m in my 60’s, so I don’t feel I’m at risk, but obviously we’ve got to obey the rules.” One of Louise’s main worries is the PAWS-PATAS animal charity shop which she runs in Las Buganvillas in Vera, telling EWN, “We don’t know whether we’re going to be allowed to stay open, because our money keeps the animal shelter going.” The owner of Mojacar Playa eatery Badger’s Jenna Mincheva is resigned to having to close the doors to her business, even though some of the produce she had bought will inevitably have to be thrown away. “There’s no other option: I totally agree with what is being done,” she said.
BRIGHT IDEA ELECTRICITY supplier Endesa has decided not to enforce any power outage due to non-payment of electricity bills due to the exceptional situation caused by the coronavirus pandemic. With this measure, the company reassures its customers of the difficulties that may be caused by this crisis when processing the receipt payment on a daily basis. The energy company has implemented mea-
sures to minimise the risk of contagion from ‘Covid-19’ in order to guarantee the continuity and quality of its services and protect the health of its employees. These include the implementation of additional measures to guarantee supply, the establishment of telework or the restriction of travel and the promotion of digital communication, among others. fuel leaks. According to reports there was no-one on board the yacht when the fire started. The only reported injury was a Guardia Civil officer who twisted his ankle during the emergency operation.

Windsurfers’ coronavirus concerns CONCERNS over the coronavirus crisis are growing among Mallorca windsurfers battling for a place to compete in the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Sergi Escandell and Joan Carles Cardona from the Club Nautic S’Arenal, who compete in the RS-X Olympic Class, are worried both about their health situation and whether their Olympic hopes will be dashed following the suspension of the 51st edition of the SAR Princesa Sofia Trophy.
“The current situation in Spain due to Covid-19 is worrying, which is why I consider that our obligation is to stay at home and leave only in cases of need, avoiding crowds and following hygiene guidelines to avoid increasing the number of infections,” commented Sergi from his home in Formentera. “The sooner we become aware of our social responsibility in this circumstance, the sooner we can get out of it. The most important thing is to remain calm, pay attention to the authorities so as not to collapse the health services and thus facilitate the work for doctors and nurses,” he added. At the same time Sergi is, like many other windsurfers, concerned about his sporting situation. He is, he said, “in a situation of instability and anxiety,”
explaining, “the coronavirus has caught us in the middle of the selection process to decide who will representing our country in the Olympics. “We don’t know what will happen from now on; whether only the last championship will be evaluated or if it will be extended and there will be a wait until there is a new competition, but mainly whether the celebration of the Olympic Games will be postponed.” Sergi’s intention for the moment is to continue training, “as no sportsperson can allow themselves to lose their physical fitness, but following the State’s recommendations of training at home. “It will be key to keep a positive attitude during these days of confinement with a lot of psychological work,” he concluded.

Operations and consultations limited MALLORCA’S hospitals have decided to limit or postpone programmed operations and visits to medical specialists due to the expansion of the coronavirus, Spanish press reported. Face-to-face consultations with patients will, where possible, be carried out by telephone. External consultations which are not urgent will be put back to a later date. In the event the consultations cannot wait, they will take place, but patients will be given a series of instructions in order that they follow a different assistance circuit from that to be followed by anyone with a respiratory issue, and therefore possibly infected with coronavirus. Drunk driver fined €1,200 A MOTORIST has been given a €1,200 fine for going into a teenager on a pedestrian crossing in Marratxi while driving under the influence of alcohol. The driver was going along the Ma-2040 close to the Festival Park commercial centre in January last year when he hit the 16year-old on the zebra crossing. The youngster suffered injuries to his back, head and legs in the incident, and was in hospital for several months. A Guardia Civil patrol did a breathalyser at the accident scene, which showed the driver had alcohol levels at double the per mitted amount.

Last week the public prosecution office reduced the request to the fine and to the loss of his licence for two years after reaching an agreement with the defendant and his lawyer.
POINTS BASED DRIVING LICENCE VALID DRIVING LICENCE You can legally drive in Spain with your existing driving licence for the first two years of residence, but after six months you must register your details with the provincial traffic authorities. After two years, you must obtain a Spanish driving licence or face a €200 fine. At the time of publishing this article, UK nationals can exchange their UK driving licence for a Spanish driving licence. However with the Brexit process, we recommend you stay up to date via the gov.uk website. Driving licences need to be renewed every 10 years up to the age of 65, and then every five years. POINTS BASED SYSTEM Spain has a driving licence points system. Drivers start with 12 points and can loose points for fines depending on the severity of the offence. Once you loose all 12 points, you loose your licence for six months. A
traffic offence can be between two to six points, with a maximum of eight points in one day. If an offence is severe, it may result in the temporary loss of licence. Keeping all your points will help reduce your vehicle insurance premiums. Some of the offences where points are lost; driving while using a mobile phone or over the legal alcohol limit is six points. Whilst driving without a seatbelt is three points. FULL LOSS OF POINTS If you lose all your points, you will need to complete a road awareness course of a total of 24 hours that can be attended over your six to12 month ban period. And sit a driving theory test. You can check how many points you have by going to the Direccion General de Trafico (DGT) website, and create a password.

Two week review IN the last two weeks, Brexit fears were put on the backburner and all eyes turned to the threat of the coronavirus. The ecostats were largely ignored, despite positive PMIs for manufacturing and services. The market did pay attention to the emergency rate cut from the Bank of England, which pushed the pound lower before investors decided it was perhaps a positive. The announcement of the budget, including significant gover nment spending and measures to support businesses and the NHS through the pandemic also gave the pound a boost. News that the UK would not be introducing ‘lock down’ measures put pressure on the pound at the end of the week - while the approach may help businesses in the short term, there appeared to be little confidence in the strategy to delay, rather than put
a halt to the spread of the virus. Italy, France and Germany took part in a G7 call to address the pandemic, but the EU is not following the rest of the world in its approach. The US decision to curtail travel to Europe did the euro no harm, but the ECB received criticism for not following other central banks in cutting interest rates and the central currency paid the price. Only time will tell if the plans will be enough, or if European governments will heed Christine Lagarde’s call to take action and in the meantime the euro is likely to struggle due to market volatility. The Federal Reserve did choose to cut interest rates in the first emergency move since the global financial crisis in March 2008, which put pressure on the US dollar. rates, which predictably pushed the Canadian dollar lower. As elsewhere, ecostats were largely ignored, despite Markit reports showing a ‘modest rebound’ in manufacturing in February, because of the larger context of the economic impact of the coronavirus. While GDP expanded by an annualised 0.3% in Q4, putting growth for 2019 at 1.9%, there are fears that significant impact on trade and the Canadian economy, particularly due to falls in oil prices, may mean that this year’s first quarter will show that the year has got into a difficult start. The Australian and New Zealand dollars followed a similar pattern both central banks cut interest rates. The Australian dollar had a counterintuitive reaction, rising after the cut, but in general both currencies have shown that they are under pressure due to the spread of the coronavirus. As commodity-based currencies with close trade links with China, they may continue to struggle, but with all countries and currencies facing the same challenge, the market is particularly volatile and difficult to forecast.

If people are worried about contracting infectious diseases there are more effective measures to be taken including good personal, respiratory and hand hygiene. It is advised that people frequently wash their hands with an alcoholbased hand rub or warm water and soap, cover their mouth and nose with a flexed elbow or tissue when sneezing or coughing and avoid close contact with anyone who has a fever or cough. It also says to seek early medical help if they have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, and share their travel history with healthcare providers.

Anyone who has lived continuously in the UK between 1980 and 1996 (a minimum of one year) will not be able to donate blood in Spain due to the risk of transmitting mad cow disease. INVESTIGATION: The Guardia Civil are looking into the cause of the accident.
Two injured in collision on highway TWO people were injured, one of them seriously, when a couple of vehicles went into each other on the Andratx highway late on Saturday evening. According to reports the two cars collided between Bendinant and Genova on a section of the road with several curves just before 11pm. The impact was such that one of the vehicles went out of control, shot off the
road and went into a tree. Several 061 ambulances, Guardia Civil and Calvia and Palma Local Police attended the accident scene. Firefighters were also called out as initially it was thought there could be people trapped in the vehicles. The most seriously injured driver was rushed to the Son Espases hospital. The Guardia Civil are investigating the cause of the accident.

Short selling restricted
REGULATORS around the world are banning the short selling of shares in vulnerable companies due to the coronavirus. In Spain a list of 69 companies listed on the Ibex Stock Exchange have been given this protection in order to ensure that the compa nies don’t suffer such a huge crisis in confidence that they go under. The decision is also to ensure that if share prices drop dramati cally that the companies cannot be bought up by foreign interests which could be to the disadvan tage of the Spanish economy.

The company learnt a great deal from the flu epidemic more than 10 years ago, but that did not compare with what is happening today.
Spanish banks care THE Spanish Banking Association (AEB) believes that the government should not impose a moratorium on the payment of interest by busi ness affected by the coronavirus, as Italy has done. There is a code of good conduct which Spanish banks follow and many are restructuring debts with mortgage guarantees on housing and they are looking at other sectors that are suffering. It says that the financial institu tions are demonstrating their sup port for the selfemployed and small businesses by introducing new credit lines worth hundreds of millions of euros.

am able to voice my opinions without fear of ‘disappearing’ as so many that live in the country you work from actually have, ok? In the UK the present situation is being compared to the
emergency circumstances we found ourselves in during the Second World War. Unfortunately, by the reports coming in, the indigenous population has been infiltrated and is nothing like it was in those dangerous times. Back then the citizens of the UK looked out for each other. People stood shoulder to shoulder and assisted those more vulnerable. The disgraceful images of screaming individuals shoving others, including the elderly, out of the way and grabbing goods off the shelves like marauding animals is I’m afraid merely a reflection on how British culture and values have been dragged down over the last generation or so. If I am able to build a mansion in a town of cardboard houses, I don’t invite all those inhabitants to come and live with me. This could apply both in Spain and the UK. I can only say that if this does occur the decent and caring members of society must do all they can to aid and assist those who are in need and unable to help themselves. Let’s just show by example that the despicable actions of many who have been given succour in Western communities are a primitive disgrace and in no way acceptable in any civilised and caring society. HOW MRS HINCH IS CLEANING UP NORA JOHNSON

NEWS that ‘cleanfluencer’ Mrs Hinch’s third book, ‘The Little Book Of Lists,’ received twice as many orders as double-Booker winner Hilar y Mantel’s latest acclaimed publication, ‘The Mirror and the Light,’ maybe isn’t so surprising. What is surprising is that Mrs Hinch’s tome isn’t available until April 2! With 3.2 million Instagram followers and her last two books coining in £5 million combined, Mrs Hinch is the nom de plume of former Essex hairdresser Sophie Hinchliffe. As for Hilary Mantel, some critics have suggested her new novel which is longer than the two preceding books (nearly 900 pages) is just too huge. Ominously prefaced by a five-and-a-half-page list of characters and two five-generation royal family trees, it’s been described as overpopulated and overloaded.

One critic declared ‘bloat has set in,’ another that it came ‘clogged with research data’ that one reader compared to wading through a Sargasso Sea of Tudor haberdashery, 16th-century foodstuffs, aristocratic genealogies and dynastic matrimonial entanglements. Well, I bet Dame Hilary’s gutted at this news: someone may even lose their head over it! So if Mrs Hinch is going to clean up, maybe she should add some tips on how to get blood stains off the chopping block? Seriously though, what is the point of comparing two entirely different books aimed at entirely different fanbases? Does ‘Thomas the Tank Engine’ outsell ‘The Unabridged History
of North Korean Dictatorship’? Similarly, does The Financial Times outsell The Sun, or does University Challenge have more viewers than Love Island (though maybe if the Love Island teams appeared on University Challenge...?) Frankly, neither type of book grabs me. What I like reading is exactly what I like writing - psychological, suspense and crime thrillers - the grittier the better. And what makes me happy? Seeing them sell well around the world (as you know, all profits to Costa del Sol Cudeca cancer charity). A Right Royal Split KING FELIPE VI has said no to inheriting any money from his father, Juan Carlos, who abdicated six years ago. Mired in scandals, the former Spanish monarch has also been told that he would stop getting an annual state handout of €194,000. The 82-year-old former king, who reigned for 39 years, is also being investigated by Swiss financial authorities over allegations that he got 100 million American dollars from Saudi Arabia in 2008 from via an offshore bank account. Last year it was announced that Juan Carlos was stepping down from any official public duties, with his health being used as one of the key factors. Insiders suggested though that Felipe had had enough of various media reports about his father´s social and business activities. Juan Carlos became Spain's first crowned head of state for 44 years and ushered in a new system of parliamentary monarchy following the death of the dictator, General Franco. As the years went on the king involved himself less in day-to-day politics, and became more of a figurehead. His reputation was tarnished during his last year on the throne due to a lavish elephant hunting trip to Botswana in 2012, when he was the Spanish president of the World Wildlife Fund. Then corruption allegations involving his youngest daughter, Cristina, and her husband Iñaki Urdangarin, led to calls for him to step aside, which he did in 2014.

I refuse to use the word ‘suffer’ because I don’t. I just have it. There are a few things I struggle with. But I’m generally happy and perfectly able. Apart from my odd sense of humour and becoming engrossed in certain subjects, you wouldn’t know there’s anything ‘wrong’ with me. Greta Thunberg famously also has Asperger’s. I do get annoyed when people call her disabled. Or say her parents are exploiting a
mentally ill child. I really don’t consider it a m e n t a l i l l n e s s . Ye s , a few things are challenging. But we can excel in our chosen spec i a l i s e d subjects/obsessions. Her’s is the planet. Whether you agree or not with her views. We should all agree that it is great she has found her purpose and confidence, so young. Because for many of us girls, teenage years can be the most difficult and confusing. The social norms that are expected of us don’t come easy. So, we tend to ‘fake it.’ Which is exhausting to keep up. That causes a lot of anxiety. This got me thinking about other social norms I find odd be-
cause of my condition. Small talk is one, it seems so pointless. British etiquette too. Why are their unwritten rules about how you should eat and talk at a dinner table? It doesn’t make the food taste any better! Also, people invading my personal space. One of the things that the Coronavirus has f o rc e d u s a l l t o d o i s ‘social distancing.’ Standing apart from each other. I think it’s great! I’ve never understood why random strangers feel the need to invade your personal space if they’re not forced to. People who walk too close behind me really irritate me. It’s not that I think they will do something bad to me. I just
don’t want them there! It’s just a shame the virus isn’t forcing people not to tailgate on the roads here too! That’s another thing that winds me up. It’s so rude and dangero u s , r e g a rd l e s s o f m y Asperger’s! Because of my condition, I also have a few sensory issues. Smells and sounds can be heightened. Another silver lining of the virus is that people are wearing masks. Bad breath is one of the things I hate the most! Anyway, Coronavirus, o r n o t . We s h o u l d r e spect each other’s boundaries and health. Don’t cough and s n e e z e i n t o t h e a i r, ever. Wash your hands regularly too. Brush your teeth too! We shouldn’t
have needed a pandemic to remind of these simple things!
Quite frankly, people seem to have lost their manners!

A FOND FAREWELL DEAR Barry Duke, Thank you for writing the article ‘Heart breaking, the final farewell.’ I am in a similar situation with a rescue dog, as I do not know his true age. I have had him for six years and was told when I took him that he was ‘about five.’ He is about 80 per cent Labrador and suffers with his hips. He is on medication but finding it increasingly difficult to move far. I know I will have to decide soon when to have his life ended and reading your story has been a great help. We owe it to our canine companies to reward their faithfulness and constant friendship by giving them the dignity they deserve. I am a recent widow and also I feel too old to have another dog so this one is very special; although I have had many. I always read EWN and enjoy your input, keep up the good work. My partner and I travelled 12,000 miles and passed through Almeria airport to Madrid, we then flew to Heathrow for a flight to Bangkok, we were not tested in any of these airports either going or on our return? So don’t believe a word, the political people tell you nothing is getting sorted, don’t be fooled. Your money or your life CORONAVIRUS is a threat to the global economy as well as to public health. The government must surely now extend the Brexit transition period and take a long-term approach to this crisis. Britain must agree with the EU to extend the Brexit transition period. Businesses and our communities will not cope with any more uncertainty during this outbreak. British companies who trade with the EU do not know what terms they’ll be trading on in less than a year. Add to this the disruption created by Coronavirus and it is reasonable to expect many businesses will not survive. Without decisive action, the government risks leaving us wholly unprepared Today, a large number of people are self-employed, part-time or on zero-hours contracts. That is why we need to think beyond the impact on employers and extend statutory sick pay to the self-employed and those who do not qualify from day one; otherwise many people will simply not be able to afford to self-isolate. This is a public health disaster waiting to happen. Something has to be done to ensure workers are not under pressure to turn up to work when sick, do not lose their jobs if they self-isolate, and receive the sick pay they are entitled to.

Eating Clean Having a balanced and healthy diet is one of the most important requirements to staying fit. HOWEVER, what kind of foods you ingest, before and after workouts, should vary accordingly to the different kind of activities you are doing. It wouldn’t make sense to fuel your body with the same meals before a yoga class as you would before a High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). Follow this nutritional guide to elevate your fitness regime. Yoga Try to keep your stomach fairly empty before a yoga class, as flexibility and difficult positions are harder to achieve on a full belly. Make sure you are full of electrolytes, as this is what is most lost dur-
ing a good sweat session. Coconut water is a good replenishing drink before yoga. After, stick to a wholesome snack, hummus and veggies, or a green smoothie with banana, celery, and pear. This is loaded with the antioxidants your body yearns for post-yoga. HIIT This intensity workout is sure to tire you out, therefore you need as much energy and nutritional fuel as you can get without feeling bloated or full. Before this workout try eating high fibre foods, such as nuts and seeds, these are full of carbs, proteins, and
fats which will keep you energised. Cereal bars high in fruit and nuts are also an easy way to pack in those essential fibres. After HIIT, make sure to reward your body with enough protein and carbohydrates. Quinoa is a superfood which will help you restore glycogen and is packed with protein. Eggs will also do the trick; add some veggies to balance out your meal. Running This meal plan also applies to spinning fanatics, as both activities are cardio intensive. Try giving yourself a few hours to fully digest any large meals before running. If you’re hungry before your run, avocado on toast is the ideal pre-workout snack. Avocados contain valuable fats to boost your energy levels. After your run, replenish those lost nutrients with a balanced, fool-proof meal like salmon with veggies; add some complex carbs to restore those glycogen levels.
THE uncertainty of recent world events has really sparked my anxiety more than usual as I am sure it has for everyone. I have driven myself to the edge, by overthinking, the entire world is talking about coronavirus. Facebook blazes with shared articles, the WhatsApp groups ping-ing off constantly, the talk amongst the parents at school last week, you find yourself working yourself up and the feeling of being overwhelmed starts to creep up on you. If you already have mental health problems it’s highly likely that the worries of coronavirus may be affecting how you are coping. I have spent the last two weeks obsessing over watching news, reading all kind of articles, listening to rumours. I have been told over and over again ‘Don’t worry, it’s just a cold,’ ‘You’re panicking for no reason,’ ‘Calm down.’ The sudden uncontrollable fear and anxiety caused me to obsess that I had been infected with the virus, all of a sudden at 11pm at night, I felt my throat swelling up, my chest closing in and I had a killer headache… I could feel my heart racing faster and faster. I got in the shower and scrubbed my
skin raw, convinced I was infected, I next remember the water going cold. Spending the following two days, hardly being able to walk, sit down, wear deodorant or simply cuddle my daughter without being in pain. This was not me wanting to purposely hurt myself, but I couldn’t seem to control my anxiety, the emotional fever spiralled into panic. Overwhelmed by the uncertainty and the future, the rational parts of my mind went offline. The only advice I can offer to anyone feeling like this at the moment is: * Maintain your routine as much as possible. * Self-isolate but keep in contact with loved ones. Don’t feel alone! * Read and listen to the news from reliable sources. * Play a game, do a puzzle, read a book, watch a film. All of those things are practically useful but most importantly voice your fears and thoughts, don’t let anyone tell you that you are panicking for no reason, if you are feeling it, it’s real to you. GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY AS Tom Ford famously said, “People will stare, make it worth their while.” Something I remind myself of on a daily basis. This may sound vain, or contrived, but I am very aware that people stare at me. In fact, I imagine I’m not alone. Surely you’ve found yourself being watched, as you go about your business. For me, I began to notice it as a teenager, and it made me feel nervous. What were they looking at? Why was I receiving this attention? In my early 20’s, I became a well-known face within the media, so friends would often say that people were staring, as they recognised me. I wasn’t convinced. Travelling to Rome, New York, Paris, people still stared. After a while, I began to feel paranoid. It took a little longer to leave the house, as I found myself checking and rechecking, to ensure that I looked ‘normal.’ Eventually, I realised that no matter how I dress - be it a Gucci tuxe-

do, or simple sportswear, the eyes followed me. Some going as far as to point and tell their friends to turn and look. Yes, I’m over six-foot tall, with a mop of blonde hair, and, as it’s been noted, by certain journalists ‘permatanned.’ As if having a tan - real or fake, is something to be ashamed of. I guess I stand out for my general appearance, even on the streets of cosmopolitan Marbella, but I find myself attracting more attention due to how I dress. I have never been one to stare, or comment on the appearance of others. Don’t get me wrong, I look, I see, I think, ‘oh man, why did you wear that?’ But not once have I smirked, stared or commented. Why would I? It goes back to basic kindness. In fact, over the years I’ve done the opposite, and told complete strangers they look great, when they do. So as those people continue to stare, I continue to act as if I don’t see them, but I do. At a recent cocktail party, I was chatting with a pretty nondescript sort
of chap, who suddenly burst out laughing and drew attention to my choice of shoes - red suede loafers, by the aforementioned Tom Ford. “What were you thinking? How much did you pay for those things?” he almost passed out laughing. I paused a moment, before staring him in the eyes, “€2,000!” Suddenly his mood changed, as if the price tag instantly made the shoes more important than they were. I glanced at his footwear, to see scuffed, basic, square-toed black lace ups, with plastic soles. I smiled and walked away. The following morning as I dressed for breakfast, I decided to adapt a new mantra - dress up, show up, always and all ways. If they’re going to stare, what do I care? I shall act as if I can’t see them from behind my shades. So just imagine, if you’re staring at me, I may well be staring back at you, in horror!

With her mum’s help, Carla managed to replicate one of Rosalía’s most memorable looks, the one she wore during her performance at Coachella last year alongside J Balvin. In the photo, Carla wears two high pigtails à la Rosalía, in addition to large crystal-studded hoops with gaudy rings and acrylic nails with all kinds of rhinestones, which have become a distinctive stamp of the ‘Yo x Ti, Tú x Mi’ singer.

Clams with Serrano Ham THIS week’s dish could hardly be called a recipe. It’s really just chucking a few ingredients in a pan. The only skill involved is keeping an eye on the clams and serving as soon as they’re open. Leave too long and they will become tough. Although this tapas bar staple is very easy it looks impressive and will have your guests thinking you’re a master in the kitchen! Clams (almejas) are readily available on the fish counters of the local supermarkets. I paid €3.85 for a bag with enough to serve four decent sized tapas. So, not only tasty, but thrifty! In a pan that has a lid gently soften four finely chopped shallots. This is the longest part of the recipe.
Soften slowly over a low heat for about 10 minutes. While doing this rinse the clams in a colander under cold running water… discard any that are open and refuse to shut when you tap them. Pat dry with a tea towel. Once the shallots are softened turn the heat up, put in some torn up serrano ham. After a minute add two crushed garlic cloves, after another 30 seconds put in the clams and a glass of dry sherry (a bottle of Fino sherry in the kitchen is very useful). Put the lid on. The clams will start to open after a couple of minutes. Check after three minutes to see if they’re all open. Scatter with finely chopped parsley. Enjoy with crusty bread!

or to avoid missing the deadline, if Spanish is not your first language you may have some trouble filling this in. Give yourself plenty of time to avoid any penalties. The Modelo 720 is in no way related to tax collection, it is a merely informative form which Hacienda demands. It should be noted that the EU considers Spain to be infringing EU law by imposing penalties for late submissions of the Modelo 720. The penalties will still apply; however, the EU Commission is currently debating the legality of these fines.
Residency Registration
THE PADRON: Registration is necessary.
REGISTERING your residency in Spain is commonly known as empadronamiento, or padron for short, which is the Spanish government’s way of registering your name and address into the local census. This is a requirement for all legal residents, Spanish natives and expatriates alike. This is important as your empadronamiento is required for various administrative tasks in Spain, such as getting your social security number, getting married, buying or selling a vehicle, and using the public health care system. To successfully register with your local council, you will first need to fill in a form called Solicitud de Empadronamiento (a Registration Request Form), this must then be handed over to your Oficina de Empadronamiento (Registration Office), which is typically found at your local town hall (ayuntamiento).
Forms vary in accordance with the region you reside in and some offices will require you to book an appointment in advance. More likely than not you are expected to book an appointment in advance, this can be done online on the local council’s website. However, to make sure you have the right information for your region, simply consult your local council’s website. Apart from your filled-out form, you will need to take some other vital documents with you. The first is any official proof of identity, such as a passport, and secondly, you will need to bring a proof of residence, this can be either a rental contract or utility bill. This registration process is not only necessary when you first move to Spain, but also when you move house.

Every picture tells a story BARRY DUKE MY workspace at home is dominated by a large and very peculiar canvas that I b o u g h t i n 1 9 7 5 f ro m a Spanish painter well known in art circles in Sitges and nearby Barcelona. Gonçal Sobré was a true eccentric, and he and I became great friends when I visited a hotel he owned in Sitges, the gorgeous Hotel Romàntic, built in 1897. I’d always had a taste for wacky art and the moment I saw Gonçal’s painting I knew I had to have it. Since then, each time I glance at it memories come flooding back of the best and most surreal holiday I’ve ever had. The first is the recollection of being woken up early one morning by Gonçal. He was standing outside my door in a state of high ex-
PECULIAR PAINTING: But the memories are priceless. citement. ‘Get dressed, grab your camera and come with me now,’ he trumpeted. Hungover, and still half asleep I got into his beat-up old jalopy and demanded to know where he was taking me.
He replied ‘You’ll see when we get there.’ Half an hour later I found myself in a small village, the central square of which was dominated by a statue of General Franco. Attached to it were chains, and within minutes of us
arriving, a tractor brought the statue crashing to the ground and an enormous cheer echoed round village. It happened immediately after the news spread throughout the world that the vicious dictator had died of a heart attack, and similar statues were destroyed in the wake of his death. The second abiding memory I have of that holiday was when a posse of pilgrims on their way back from Lourdes arrived at the hotel at around midnight, each carrying a six-litre bottle of ‘holy’ water. These were not nice people. They rudely demanded that the water be taken up to their rooms by the concierge, a man in his late 80s who had to use the stairs to lug the bottles and luggage up to their rooms (the hotel did not have a lift). He wasn’t thanked. Nor did he receive a single tip. The next morning Gonçal was at the reception desk when the pilgrims’ leader stormed up to him and insisted that bottled wa-
ter be sent up to each of their rooms. The pious party had discovered that the tap water was salty, and they couldn’t make tea. A fiery atheist, Gonçal thundered: ‘Use your bloody holy water to make tea, or go to my café and buy some.’ Ten minutes later the pilgrims stormed out of the hotel in a fury. During the 45 years that I’ve owned the painting, it never once crossed my mind to have it valued. So this week I contacted Balclis, a leading auction house in Barcelona, and sent them a link to a website detailing Gonçal’s history. To my astonishment I received a reply from Balclis within an hour of my sending them an email with a photo of the painting attached. The good news was that they knew Sobré’s work. The bad news was that, were I to put it up for auction, I’d be lucky to get €4.00! Ah well, the memories it conjures up are priceless.
