Now is a time to think; about the elderly, the medical staff who sacrifice their time and health, people with chronic illnesses, and the people who cannot stockpile goods. Take this time to better yourself and, more importantly, the community you know and love.

Caught In The Act A MURCIA man surprised a burglar that was trying to steal his car, after the thief had been inside the owner’s property to get some implements to force his way into the vehicle. A 38-year-old Spaniard was arrested
by the National Police after they arrived on the scene. The thief had scampered over a wall to get into the victim’s patio, and then forced his way through a door to get inside the property, where he helped himself to some tools.

The Big Mask Rip-Off
FACE MASK:-The Miller N-95 is one of the world’s biggest brands. A MAN has been arrested for defrauding companies of at least €726,000 after he failed to supply them with face masks as a protection against viruses like Covid-19. The 44-year-old was detained in Alicante City by the National Police who managed to stop €350,000 going into some of his bank accounts. The con man went round selling the Miller N-
95 masks to a variety of customers, including one firm that acts as a supplier to pharmacies. The fraudster got in touch with potential clients by having access to a contact list from a company that he used to work for. The National Police launched an investigation after receiving several complaints that the face masks had not been sent, despite payments being put into a
bank account. The biggest sting was on an unnamed public company that supplied chemists with masks. They paid the arrested man close to €300,000, whilst another victim paid an advance of €180,000 for the purchase of half-a-million masks. Inquiries are still continuing over the possibility that other people had fallen foul of the fraudster’s deceit.

SPAIN’S 15-day official state of alert due to the major coronavirus crisis means the government has imposed extraordinary restrictions countrywide on movement and daily life to protect public health and safety, contain the spread of Covid-19 and to reinforce the public health system.
• Staying at home and exceptions
Everyone is expected to stay inside their homes unless they have a valid reason for going out. People are allowed to circulate on public streets to buy food, pharmaceuticals and essential goods, for assistance at medical centres and to get to and from their workplace. The circulation of private vehicles for the above and to fill up at service stations is allowed. Activities have to be carried out individually, with the exception of accompanying people with a disability or for another justifiable reason.
• Education
All public and private schools, universities and education centres have been closed, but online educational activities or distance learning continue where possible.
• Open and shut
All businesses have had to close with the exception of those selling food and drink and essential items, pharmaceuticals, medication, and hygiene products, the press, vehicle fuel, technological and telecommunications equipment, animal food, and launderettes. The doors are closed to all museums, libraries, monuments, entertainment venues, sports facilities and leisure outlets.
• Civil and religious ceremonies
Any civil or religious ceremony has to be in accordance with the measures on avoiding gatherings of people, and with the guarantee, people are at least one-metre apart from each other.
• Public transport
Public transport is still running to enable people to get to work if they have to and to access basic services. Operators are required to take measures to ensure passengers are well separated and to clean vehicles daily in accordance with Health Ministry recommendations.
• Enforcement and fines
Law enforcement and State Security forces are ensuring compliance with extraordinary restrictions. People who do not obey the rules could face fines of up to €600,000 or even a one-year prison sentence in the most serious of cases.

TRAVEL ADVICE UPDATE THE FCO has updated its Travel Advice to state that from Tuesday March 17 until the end of the State of Alarm, Spain is closing its borders to those who wish to enter the country, with some exceptions. The land borders remain open for those leaving Spain. At present, air and maritime borders will remain open following the restrictions put in place by the Spanish government in response to the outbreak of coronavirus (Covid-19). On March 14, the Spanish government introduced a State of Alarm, which imposes significant restrictions on movement throughout Spain in response to the coronavirus outbreak. Transport services will be operating at reduced levels. Public gatherings are banned, most shops, many businesses and all schools and universities are closed, and residents have been instructed to remain at home as much as possible. There are limited, specific exceptions to the requirement to remain at home, in particular
in order to buy food or other essential items, to return home to the primary residence, to go to work if unable to work from home and to carry out caring or similar duties. We keep our travel advice under constant review and recommend that British nationals sign up for alerts, so they know when it has been updated. Anyone with upcoming journeys planned, should check with their airlines and tour operators for the latest information. Urgent measures A NUMBER of urgent measures have been adopted by the Spanish government in a bid to protect the public after coronavirus plunged the country into an official ‘state of alarm.’ The moves are aimed at preventing the spread of the virus, maintaining social protection for employees and the self-employed and ensuring the supply and best distribution of medicines and health products. As such, workers who are infected with COVID-19 or forced into periods of isolation for their own protection, will be eligible for temporary incapacity benefit. The European Council held an extraordinary meeting on March 10, during which Heads of States identified four priorities. Firstly, to limit the spread of the virus. Members reiterated ‘as a maximum priority’ the health of citizens must be protected, and that all actions be based on scientific and health authority recommendations, with proportionate measures. Secondly, the consistent
supply of medication. It was agreed to entrust the Commission with the analysis of the public’s needs and the implementation of initiatives to avoid a shortage, in collaboration with industry representatives. Thirdly, the promotion of research, in particular for the development of a vaccine. And fourthly, deal with the socio-economic consequences. The Union and its members pledged to make use of all resources to support workers and small businesses. To respond to these priorities, the European Commission is working on two fronts sanitary and economic. On the health front, a number of actions have been announced. These include the coordination of measures through daily conferences with the Ministers of Health and Interior and the organisation of a team of epidemiologists and virologists from different Member States to propose guidelines at European level. An inventory of protective equipment and available
breathing apparatus is being drawn up, together with an assessment of production and distribution capabilities. And there will be a strengthening of a European initiative to fund specific research on coronavirus, with €140 million of public and private funding for vaccine research, diagnosis and treatment. The Spanish government approved measures on Saturday which means self-employed workers infected with coronavirus, or in forced quarantine will be eligible for financial aid. The pledge of support is reportedly ‘unlimited’ and will mean that self-employed workers who are forced to stay at home will be considered in the same way as employees on official sick leave by the Department of Social Security. Employers and people who work on a freelance basis will be able to postpone their Social Security payments for three consecutive months in areas and sectors which will be outlined by the health authorities. The contributions will be deferred for 12 months.

Rubbish Tender Hitch PLANS to advertise a multi-million euro tender for Torrevieja’s refuse collection and street cleaning contract has still not seen the light of day, despite the council saying in mid-December that the tender would be published within a fortnight. Torrevieja Council has allocated a budget of up €25 million a year for contracting out the service, which is currently done by the Acciona company without a contract. Government team spokesman, Federico Alarcón, said that they wanted changes to the tender document that was being drawn up for the authority by Almoradi-based firm, Mediurb, and that has caused the delay. The council paid €5,000 to Mediurb, rather than using internal municipal ex-

The proposed tender document has now had changes to costings, as well as plans for technological and environment improvements that would be made by any contract winner. It’s the latest hitch in permanently sorting out Torrevieja’s rubbish collection service, which includes beach cleaning, after a previous contract was voided by the National
Court last autumn over irregularities. That deal was drawn up by the former coalition that ran the council until they lost to the Partido Popular in last May’s local elections. Objections were made by trade unions and the current service provider, Acciona, which led to the new council starting the process again under a new set of conditions. Acciona have now been working in Torrevieja without a contract since June 2016.

Instant Grab A MAN hit a woman and stole some coffee after she refused to give him some money, as she was loading up her car in a Murcia City supermarket car park. The unnamed man noticed the shopper putting her goods into the car boot last Saturday, and asked for some money. She refused and the man assaulted her before running away with a jar of coffee. Unfortunately for the begging robber, his escape was quickly stopped by police officers in the area, and he faces a charge of robbery with violence.

Millions For Sports City repairs TORREVIEJA’S Sports City area is get a boost of over €5 million for repair work to the Sports Palace, and for the building of a new 25-metre indoor swimming pool. The Palace venue is the centrepiece of Sports City and Torrevieja Council’s draft budget for 2020 shows a major investment of €3.3 million in the facility. The building opened in September 2000, but it now needs a big overhaul to deal with issues like water leaks during heavy rain and complaints about the
poor state of the changing rooms. The plan in effect sees a complete change to the centre’s infrastructure with the replacement of all electrical, heating and natural gas installations in addition to all of the plumbing and air conditioning. There is an additional time pressure on the work, which will start this year, as the Palace will be one of Spain’s venues for the World Women’s Handball Championships in December 2020.. Improvements will al-
so be carried out to the current Olympic heated pool, which has caused all kinds of problems from virtually the day it opened. The pool was closed for almost a year in 2017 as repairs were done to combat leakage issues, which were still not totally solved. The other major investment will be in a new 25-metre indoor pool which will be built between the Sports Palace and the blue pavilion on around 1,000 square metres of land. T wo million euros

A BOOST: Torrevieja’s Sports Palace. have been allocated for the project and the building will be linked to the Sports Palace. The pool itself will be more of a leisure and educational facility compared to the main Olympic pool. For example, it will focus on elderly swimmers or users who need to swim as part of their health rehabilitation. Lessons for children will also be held at the new pool, which will use new technology to control the temperature at varying levels between 30 and 34 degrees.

Wave of support FOLLOWING the national Government declaration of a ‘state of alarm’ for at least 15 days to combat the spread of coronavirus, residents and holidaymakers in Benidorm have pledged their support to local businesses, health care professionals and all those affected. Ed Cullen said: “Our thoughts are with the people who live and work in Benidorm at this time. Yes, we have been inconvenienced by losing our holidays, yes, we have lost money... but this is a short term issue for us. “For the businesses in Benidorm, this could have long term repercussions. Think about others at this time. Good luck to all the ‘locals’ in Benidorm." Cat Sanders added: “Here’s hoping that when all this confusion is over and the virus is contained, that we can all go back to Benidorm. We will be celebrating by going to pubs, restaurants and the beach. Spending money, being kind and tipping the waiters and cleaning staff who will be really struggling the next few weeks. Benidorm is our second home, a place we all love. Will rise again.” Adele Saunders has lived in Benidorm for four years, and said it isn’t really important whether or not the public is happy with the government restrictions or not. “It’s a reality, and we have to do everything we are asked to do to protect ourselves and others. I’ve never seen the streets the way they are today, completely empty barring a few people, but we must follow the guidelines to get through this.” Yolanda Freeman said: “I’m here with friends and we have an apartment until

It’s true that we need to take this virus seriously. It’s capable of causing severe illness, death, and drastic long-term changes to how we live and work. It could even cripple the economy. It’s easy to stay focused on those calamities as they seem to be the only topics covered on the news. But those thoughts would be counterproductive. Obviously, there are things you need to know about the coronavirus outbreak to protect yourself and those around you, but you do not need to become a COVID19 expert, nor do you need to hear about every unpleasant detail from dawn until bedtime. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF FREE TIME: Negative thoughts are counter productive.

WITH shops, beaches and bars closing down as Spain’s Costa del Sol begins to get ready for an emergency lockdown will the residents of the region struggle to cope during a period of isolation? As we have reported there have been long supermarket queues and bare shelves. Can the expat community rally together and push through such a confusing time and go back to normal at the other side? Walking through the streets of Fuengirola it seems that some residents are blatantly ignoring the suggestion to stay indoors and bars like La Sureña next to the train station were quite busy, patrons had even brought their toilet rolls supplies. However, some were very conscious of the risks, such as

COVID19 self test SPAIN’S Ministry of Health has created a coronavirus ‘self test’ online. Concerned members of the public can check symptoms and there is a questions and answers section related to COVID19. The interactive test has been developed by health personnel, and ‘provides the population with an agile and immediate system in which to find updated information on issues related to the coronavirus.’ A Conselleria Sanidade health spokesperson said: “The fact that the test customises answers through specific questions, makes it possible to offer recommendations adapted to the particular situation of each person.” There are four options, depending on the scenario - the option for people with possible symptoms, another for those in isolation offering advice, a third with recommendations for people who have tested positive and a fourth offers general information. It will run alongside other Ministry of Health initiatives, such as the freephone 900 400 166. Coronavirus crisis impact THE Euro Weekly News spoke to Costa Almeria residents, visitors and business owners in Mojacar to get their views on the coronavirus crisis. “I think the whole world has gone completely mad and it’s all just media hype. The beach ban just seems completely ridiculous,” visitor Tammy Sebire told EWN. Her friend Paula Jeeps agrees. Paula and her husband, who are renting in Mojacar while house hunting, are staying upbeat though. She said they plan to enjoy themselves and “just carry on with the G&Ts! “Knowing what’s happened in Italy they should have done it sooner. I think it’s the only way to stop it,” commented ‘swallow’ Carol Fisher on the drastic restrictions under the state of alarm, despite question marks about whether she and husband Allan can get back to the UK from Santander next month. Carol is not daunted by the “enforced staying in” as long as she has access to basic necessities as she has plenty of hobbies, although bird watching enthusiast Allan is less happy. One issue Carol and Allan did raise was dog walking, and whether that was going to be difficult. Geraldine and Brian Jones are in their 80’s and like the Fishers spend winter in Costa Almeria and summer in the UK. Geraldine’s main concern is not knowing how long the coronavirus crisis is going to last and whether they’ll be “trapped” in Spain
RESIGNED: Mojacar Playa restaurant owner Jenna Mincheva believes the lockdown is the only option. Louise Pallett, who has lived in Mojacar for 18 years, is another who believes the restrictions are necessary, especially for the elderly. “I’m in my 60’s, so I don’t feel I’m at risk, but obviously we’ve got to obey the rules.” One of Louise’s main worries is the PAWS-PATAS animal charity shop which she runs in Las Buganvillas in Vera, telling EWN, “We don’t know whether we’re going to be allowed to stay open, because our money keeps the animal shelter going.” The owner of Mojacar Playa eatery Badger’s Jenna Mincheva is resigned to having to close the doors to her business, even though some of the produce she had bought will inevitably have to be thrown away. “There’s no other option: I totally agree with what is being done,” she said.

Contingency plan CRUZ ROJA Spain (Red Cross) is calling on all of its volunteers to concentrate on the most vulnerable members of society as COVID19 grips the nation. The non-profit organisation has more than 200,000 volunteers in more than 1,400 towns and cities throughout Spain. And it has launched a campaign to ‘reinforce the intervention with the most vulnerable people’ during the coronavirus pandemic. Cruz Roja’s General Contingency Plan for COVID-19 aims to in-
crease the care provided to 400,000 people throughout the country
who it has identified as being particularly vulnerable to the coronavirus: older people, people with disabilities, people with chronic diseases and those who participate in its health programmes. It also intends to increase calls to the vulnerable to inform and detect specific needs, as well as up the distribution of food, hygiene kits and medication.

Salinas, where they ‘piped aboard’ their family and friends for an enjoyable occasion. Mustered within the members and guest visi-
tors were ex-military personnel from other UK branches and services, including Dave and Liz visiting from the UK RNA Purley branch, and there was a healthy contingent present from the Torrevieja branch of the Royal Marines Association. There was plenty of nostalgia with many a tale told about time spent in the services, which rose to a crescendo inbetween the various courses that were served up by the restaurant waiting staff. Second Time Lucky
THE Rojales Pantomime Group are looking for new members to join them for their production of Treasure Island next January, after this year’s show had to be postponed. The panto will be performed at San Fulgencio’s Cardenal Belluga theatre, but as some of the group members are unable to carry on for a variety of reasons, the group is looking for new people to join them. You can be part of the cast, or join in the chorus, or help backstage. The group also gets involved in social events before rehearsals get going in September. Make a date in May Also taking to the stage will be the popular soprano Verity Hall, as well as the youngsters from San Miguel’s Gloria Fuertes primary school choir. There will be plenty of free seating in the square for this free event, as well as a promised selection of some tasty nibbles for everybody who comes along. All of the proceeds from the concert will go to San Miguel Social Services to help to support younger people in the area. The Costa Singers have thanked the local council for helping to make what promises to be a fine musical treat possible.

THE Costa Singers have organised a big concert in the centre of San Miguel de Salinas to celebrate 75 years of peace in Europe. The three-hour event will start at 6.00pm on Saturday May 9, which is the annual Europe Day, with the entertainment being staged opposite the theatre in Plaza Jaime I, which is also known to many local people as La Concha. A variety of well-known local groups and performers will be joining the Costa Singers, including the Phoenix International Concert Band; the Spangles Ladies’ Harmony Choir; and the Blue Desert country band.

Beaches In Need OPPOSITION politicians have slammed Elche Council over allegedly not doing enough over the last two months to make sure that local beaches have returned to their nor-
mal state after Storm Gloria. With the Easter holidays looming, PP and Ciudadanos members criticised Elche’s Tourism councillor, Carles Molina, over the lack of essential maintenance at Arenales del Sol and El Carabassi following January’s bad weather. They say that rubbish on the beaches, along with broken walkways and damaged observation points have still not been sorted out. Molina responded that the removal of algae from the beaches started a few

Brit In Trouble A BRITISH motorist was arrested in Torrevieja after he tried to avoid a Guardia Civil checkpoint. His attempt to speed past the officers came to nothing, as the Guardia caught up with the 23-year-old man, who looked distinctly nervous. That prompted a full-scale check, and the driver’s first problem was that he could not produce a valid driving licence. That led officers to investigate further, as the anxious Brit was found to have £4,000 in cash on him, and two packages of marihuana weighing 566 grams stashed away in the car boot. Plastic vacuum packaging for storing drugs was also discovered plus some small quantities of narcotics. The unnamed man was hauled up before a Torrevieja judge on road safety and drug trafficking charges. The Guardia Civil impounded his car, which was said to be worth in the region of £50,000 and had British number plates.

Sperm Bank Shock A MAN has won over €10,000 in compensation after the Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital in Murcia City didn’t tell him that they threw away his semen sample. The patient gave the sample which the hospital would keep as backup in case the testicular disease that he suffered from got worse, which meant he would be infertile. Four years later he returned to the facility with his girlfriend to talk about insemination using his sample. To his surprise he found out that his
semen had not been kept because of the low quality of sperm, but nobody had let him know. Murcia’s regional health ministry offered the man €3,000 in compensation, but the Murcia Supreme Court ruled that the sum was far too low and increased it to €10,250. The argument from the judges was that the hospital by not telling him what happened in the first place, denied him the option to provide another sample, even though the chance of having the appropriate sperm count would have been low.

ROAD WORKS: Councillors take a stroll on the Vereda de Crevillent. A MAJOR road resurfacing operation in both the rural and urban areas of Elche has seen work completed on the Vereda de Crevillent. Seventy thousand euros was spent on the latest section of local roads to get a makeover, with the local council promising a total spend of €5 million
being promised across the whole municipality. Elche’s maintenance councillor, Héctor Díez, checked out the Vereda de Crevillent improvements along with the councillor for the Rural Districts, Vicente Alberola. Díez listed a whole set of finished works in March including those in the
Toscar area, and the Pantano camino road between Avenida del Ferrocarril and Ronda Norte. Alberola said the new surface for the Vereda de Crevillent was excellent news as it is a busy road that’s used by local residents as a link between the León and Dolores highways.

VANS GALORE: Unofficial motorhome park in Torrevieja.
TORREVIEJA’S Environment Association (AMAT) says that the local council ought to create a dedicated motorhome site to stop the big vehicles pitching up at environmentally sensitive areas next to the coast. As an example, undeveloped land between Cala de La Higuera and Playa Los Locos has seen a big influx of motorhomes in recent weeks, with numbers said to be
around a hundred. AMAT claims that the vehicles don’t fit in with the area, and have suggested
that Torrevieja Council find an officially designated motorhome park to stop adhoc sites appearing.
Home Fall THE number of new properties built in the Vega Baja region last year fell for the first time since 2012. Five hundred and twenty seven fewer homes were constructed in 2019 compared to the previous year, which is a 15 per cent drop in new builds.

trum. But high funct i o n i n g . I re f u s e t o use the word ‘suffer’ because I don’t. I just h a v e i t . T h e re a re a few things I struggle with. But I’m generally happy and perfectly able. Apart from my odd sense of humour and becoming eng ro s s e d i n c e r t a i n subjects, you wouldn’t know there’s anything ‘wrong’ with me. Greta Thunberg famously also has Asperger’s. I do get annoyed when people call her disabled. Or say her parents are exploiting a mentally ill child. I really don’t consider it a mental illness. Yes, a few things are challenging. But we can excel in our chosen specialised subjects/obsessions.
Her’s is the planet. Whether you agree or not with her views. We should all agree that it is great she has found her purpose and confidence, so young. Because for many of us girls, teenage years can be the most difficult and confusing. The social norms that are expected of us don’t come easy. So, we tend to ‘fake it.’ Which is exhausting to keep up. That causes a lot of anxiety. This got me thinking about other social nor ms I find odd because of my condition. Small talk is one, it seems so pointless. British etiquette too. Why are their unwritten rules about how you should eat and talk at a
dinner table? It doesn’t make the food taste any better! Also, people invading my personal space. One of the things that the Coronavirus has forced us all to do is ‘social distancing.’ Standing apart from each other. I think it’s great! I’ve never understood why random strangers feel the need to invade your personal space if they’re not forced to. People who walk too close behind me really irritate me. It’s not that I think they will do something bad to me. I just don’t want them there! It’s just a shame the virus isn’t forcing people not to tailgate on the roads here too! That’s another thing that winds me up. It’s so
rude and dangerous, regardless of my Asperger’s! Because of my condition, I also have a few sensory issues. Smells and sounds can be heightened. Another silver lining of the virus is that people are wearing masks. Bad breath is one of the things I hate the most! Anyway, Coronavirus, or not. We should respect each other’s boundaries and health. Don’t cough and sneeze into the air, ever. Wash your hands regularly too. Brush your teeth too! We shouldn’t have needed a pandemic to remind of these simple things! Quite frankly, people seem to have lost their manners!

TALKING POINT: ADAPT members hear about Plumbum.
Plumbum Briefing THE local environment was very much the talking point at the March meeting of ADAPT (the Association of English Speakers of San Pedro del Pinatar) held at the Pensionista Centre in Lo Pagan JosĂŠ Luis Alcaide from the Plumbum Project and Juan Diego LĂłpez, secretary of the Hippocampus association, gave a presentation on the project that started in 2017. Juan Diego explained that the main purpose of Plumbum is to remove lead
from coastal waters, including the Mar Menor, to reduce its toxic effect on the eco-system. He also thanked the ADAPT Metal Detecting group which coordinates its efforts with Plumbum, and which so far has collected 888 separate pieces of lead from local beaches weighing in at 73 kilos. All ADAPT activities have now been suspended until at least the end of the month because of the coronavirus situation.

Cop Cars Leased TORREVIEJA Council has leased 12 vehicles for the Local Police force due to the current poor state of their patrol fleet. The authority is spending €55,000 as an emergency measure until July, when the new budget kicks-in for the purchase of 17 new vehicles. Six Nissan Qashqai and four Opel Mokka cars have been hired by the council, along with a Renault van for the Operational Reinforcement Group (GRO) and a Citroën van for general use. The vehicles were registered in 2017 and are fully equipped with all

Watch What You Flush! PEOPLE who flush hygienic wipes down the toilet are costing Torrevieja’s water company, Agamed, thousands of euros each year by causing blockages in sewage pipes and problems at water treatment plants. Rough mathematics show that the wipe flushing costs up to €6 per year for each user in the city. Agamed’s sanitation network chief, Dina González, was joined by her colleague Gemma Cruz, and Torrevieja’s Citizen Participation councillor, Inmaculada Montesinos, in a joint appeal to get wipe users to dispose of them in a different way. Five hundred cardboard boxes have been given the name, ‘Monster of the
Wipes’ and have been distributed amongst local groups, so that used wipes can be thrown into them, rather than down the loo with the potential to reduce the effectiveness of local treatment plants. González said that the labelling on most wipes describing them as biodegradable and disposable was simply not true. Agamed and Torrevieja Council have asked for all citizens and various homeowners’ associations to be totally aware of the consequences of what is flushed down the toilet. One of those they said could be breakages and leaks that lead to sewage ending up in the sea.

Green Message MOBILE ecoparks and educational roadshows will hit the road again this year after plans were backed at a recent meeting of the Vega Baja Sustainable Consortium. Consortium chiefs approved money to fund a new round of the service that will see the ecoparks visiting 26 municipalities. Besides encouraging the environmentallyfriendly use of the right containers for rubbish disposal, the ecoparks will also offer their popular roadshow for local schoolchildren of all ages to learn about big green issues like recycling. The Consortium is also planning to help munici-

POINTS BASED DRIVING LICENCE VALID DRIVING LICENCE You can legally drive in Spain with your existing driving licence for the first two years of residence, but after six months you must register your details with the provincial traffic authorities. However with the Brexit process, we recommend you stay up to date via the gov.uk website. Driving licences need to be renewed every 10 years up to the age of 65, and then every five years. POINTS BASED SYSTEM Spain has a driving licence points system. Drivers start with 12 points and can loose points for fines depending on the severity of the offence. Once you loose all 12 points, you loose your licence for six months. A
traffic offence can be between two to six points, with a maximum of eight points in one day. If an offence is severe, it may result in the temporary loss of licence. Keeping all your points will help reduce your vehicle insurance premiums. Some of the offences where points are lost; driving while using a mobile phone or over the legal alcohol limit is six points. Whilst driving without a seatbelt is three points. FULL LOSS OF POINTS If you lose all your points, you will need to complete a road awareness course of a total of 24 hours that can be attended over your six to12 month ban period. And sit a driving theory test. You can check how many points you have by going to the Direccion General de Trafico (DGT) website, and create a password.

Donating blood in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. Despite their autonomous operations management, every regional service is fully incorporated into a unique and common Public National Health System, supplying a cohesive blood transfusion care to all citizens, residents, and visitors in Spain based on 100 per cent voluntary and non-remunerated blood donation. Anyone who has lived continuously in the UK between 1980 and 1996 (a minimum of one year) will not be able to donate blood in Spain due to the risk of transmitting mad cow disease. Similarly, there are restrictions if you have received a blood transfer in the UK. However, each region may have different rules about donation. Call the donation helpline on 935 573 500. Alternatively, visit www.donorsang.gencat.cat to find out if you are eligible. If you are eligible, you can give blood at your local hospital, or via the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja) at one of their clinics, or in one of their mobile units. Despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain blood is through the generosity of the public. The blood is carefully screened for disease to make sure it is safe. After a tattoo, you must wait four months to be eligible to donate. After surgery, the exclusion period will depend on the type of intervention. After minor surgical procedures, you cannot donate blood for seven days or until you are fully recovered. After undergoing major surgery, you will not be able to donate blood for four months. Mayor In Lorry Swipe THE rancour between Orihuela and Rafal councils over boundaries has flared up again, this time over the El Mudamiento district, which is in the Orihuela area, despite it adjoining Rafal. Orihuela mayor Emilio Bascuñana has asked for the Valencian government to stop heavy vehicles being diverted from Rafal onto El Mudamiento roads in a clear swipe at the neighbouring authority. The call came as Bascuñana went to the hamlet to announce a 195 thousand euro package of improvements which include resurfaced pavements, a better drinking water supply, and enhanced sewers and drainage. There´s no love lost between the Rafal and Orihuela authorities over territorial matters, and last May, a pot of paint and a brush were produced by Rafal mayor Manuel Pine-
da to put down street markings in another row:this time over the status of Calle Infanta Elena, which marks the boundary between the two council areas. Pineda´s move attracted a lot of publicity, as Orihuela local police watched with interest from a pavement that belonged to their municipality. As for El Mudamiento, around 400 residents live there and nearly all of them regard themselves as part of Rafal, which is just over three kilometres away, They get most of their services from Rafal council, but the community comes under the aegis of Orihuela council, who get the local property tax paid into their coffers. Residents also have to make a 17 kilometre journey to Orihuela City itself to conduct essential business, which proved to be difficult last September after some of them were hit by
severe flooding. After a few days though, they were allowed to file claims for assistance locally in Rafal. Orihuela has consistently refused demands for El Mudamiento to switch affiliation to the Rafal council area, which last year voted to support a change. The matter is now left in the hands of the Valencian government and probably the courts.. For the new investment package announcement, which is funded by the Alicante Provincial Council, mayor Bascuñana went to El Mudamiento himself with two councillors to announce the details, and also to complain about the heavy lorries using local roads. “These lorries are making life unpleasant for local residents and are causing damage to the road surfaces”, said Bascuñana. The tender for the work was announced last week.

The Great Sausage Scam A GANG that ran a scam ordering sausages that they did not pay for, but then sold them on from a storage area in Crevillente, has been smashed by the Guardia Civil in Alicante. Seven people across Alicante and Valencia provinces and the Murcia region were arrested for their part in the sausage scam, which defrauded banks and nine meat producers of a total figure of just under €900,000. Six Spaniards and a woman have been charged with fraud, misappropriation, and belonging to a criminal organisation. The crooks, led by a man from Murcia, created three shell companies for their ruse. They then secured loans from banks that they never repaid and they reeled in their victims from around the country from their ‘of-

The ‘offices’ would firstly ask for and get several loans from the banks, which they would then use to make small orders of around 300 sausages from the meat producers. The orders were duly paid for in order to prove that they were a legal organisation. Once the trust of the producers had been
gained, the gang then upped their game by substantially increasing their orders (up to 5,000 sausages in one case), which they did not pay for. A refrigerated warehouse was rented in Crevillente to store their unpaid purchases, before they sold the sausages on for a big profit on the black market. An extensive investigation started last summer, and the Guardia Civil
found that nine businesses in the Alicante and Murcia area had been hoodwinked, along with outlets in Sevilla, Albacete, Girona, Barcelona, Lugo and Madrid. Six hundred thousand euros of products had been supplied without payment, though the Guardia did manage to recover one delivery worth €32,000. The banks ended up being ripped off to the tune of €296,000.

The initiative was launched by Bigastro’s Environment councillor, Antonio Meseguer, a few months ago, and he joined association members and students from the San José de Calasanz college to see the first boxes erected on the Ruta Alquibla Meseguer said he hoped that the boxes
would attract certain breeds of birds that are natural predators of certain pests. “We hope to create a permanent area for the birds to live and this will stop the creation of colonies of mosquitoes or processionary caterpillars.” The councillor added that the natural method to control the pests was being used as a way to improve the biodiversity
of the local environment. After all of the boxes have been put up, the long-term aspect of the project will kick in, as the bird arrivals who use the boxes will start to be monitored from June. Next year will also see a full census carried out to check out the different species that have been attracted to the Ruta Alquibia area because of the boxes.

Spanish banks care THE Spanish Banking Association (AEB) believes that the government should not impose a moratorium on the payment of interest by busi ness affected by the coronavirus, as Italy has done. There is a code of good conduct which Spanish banks follow and many are restructuring debts with mortgage guarantees on housing and they are looking at other sectors that are suffering. It says that the financial institu tions are demonstrating their sup port for the selfemployed and small businesses by introducing new credit lines worth hundreds of millions of euros.

The in crease from five to seven YOU AND THE years duration for LAW IN SPAIN rental contracts made with compa nies applies to contracts made from March 6, 2019, when the modifications to the LAU, the Spanish land law, went into effect. So it does not apply to your con tract. It appears that your landlord is doing things right when he makes sure that you are informed well in ad vance of the date and by a letter that you acknowledge. Of course he wants to find a new tenant who can pay to day’s higher rents.

Helping small business BRITISH supermarket chain Morrisons has announced that it will pay its small suppliers immediately to help them during the cur rent coronavirus uncertain ty. The supermarket relies
on a backbone of small suppliers and currently for those with an annual turnover of £100,000 (€112,000) or less payment is 14 days and for firms with a turnover between £100,000 and £1 (€1.12)
million, payment is from 30 to 60 days. All suppliers with a turnover of up to £1 mil lion will be paid immedi ately, but those with larger turnovers will have to wait 60 days.

By the end of 2019, turnover had grown by just over 6 per cent and profits were declared at €21 million (compared to 2018 loss of €36 mil lion). Debt is being reduced and aug mented by the issue of short term bonds which reduce interest pay ments, so it does look as if Mango is back.

Consequently I decided to take this opportunity to wish you all strength, luck and a healthy conclusion to this unprecedented threat to our existence. I would also like to add that when the emergency passes, as it surely will, the Chinese authorities will have a great deal of questions to answer. Irrespective of exactly how it came into existence, this virus has most certainly originated in China and the world deserves some explanation and possibly huge amounts of compensation from a country that has, by one way or another, become one of the wealthiest on the planet. am able to voice my opinions without fear of ‘disappearing’ as so many that live in the country you work from actually have, ok? In the UK the present situation is being compared to the
emergency circumstances we found ourselves in during the Second World War. Unfortunately, by the reports coming in, the indigenous population has been infiltrated and is nothing like it was in those dangerous times. Back then the citizens of the UK looked out for each other. People stood shoulder to shoulder and assisted those more vulnerable. The disgraceful images of screaming individuals shoving others, including the elderly, out of the way and grabbing goods off the shelves like marauding animals is I’m afraid merely a reflection on how British culture and values have been dragged down over the last generation or so. If I am able to build a mansion in a town of cardboard houses, I don’t invite all those inhabitants to come and live with me. If they have made no contribution in the creation of my existence they will have no pride, respect or even understanding of my home and will ul-
timately tear it down. Digressing slightly it has just been announced that all those over 70 years of age may be restricted to their homes for up to four months! This could apply both in Spain and the UK. I can only say that if this does occur the decent and caring members of society must do all they can to aid and assist those who are in need and unable to help themselves. Let’s just show by example that the despicable actions of many who have been given succour in Western communities are a primitive disgrace and in no way acceptable in any civilised and caring society. NEWS that ‘cleanfluencer’ Mrs Hinch’s third book, ‘The Little Book Of Lists,’ received twice as many orders as double-Booker winner Hilary M a n t e l ’s l a t e s t a c c l a i m e d publication, ‘The Mirror and the Light,’ maybe isn’t so surprising. What is surprising is that Mrs Hinch’s tome isn’t available until April 2! With 3.2 million Instagram followers and her last two books coining in £5 million combined, Mrs Hinch is the nom de plume of former Essex hairdresser Sophie Hinchliffe. As for Hilary Mantel, some critics have suggested her new novel which is longer than the two preceding books (nearly 900 pages) is just too huge. Ominously prefaced by a five-and-a-half-page list of characters and two five-generation royal family trees, it’s been described as overpopulated and overloaded.

One critic declared ‘bloat has set in,’ another that it came ‘clogged with research data’ that one reader compared to wading through a Sargasso Sea of Tudor haberdashery, 16th-century foodstuffs, aristocratic genealogies and dynastic matrimonial entanglements. Well, I bet Dame Hilary’s gutted at this news: someone may even lose their head over it! So if Mrs Hinch is going to clean up, maybe she should add some tips on how to get blood stains off the chopping block? Seriously though, what is the point of comparing two entirely different books aimed at entirely different fanbases? Does ‘Thomas the Tank Engine’ outsell ‘The Unabridged History
of North Korean Dictatorship’? Similarly, does The Financial Times outsell The Sun, or does University Challenge have more viewers than Love Island (though maybe if the Love Island teams appeared on University Challenge...?) Frankly, neither type of book grabs me. What I like reading is exactly what I like writing - psychological, suspense and crime thrillers - the grittier the better. And what makes me happy? Seeing them sell well around the world (as you know, all profits to Costa del Sol Cudeca cancer charity). GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY AS Tom Ford famously said, “People will stare, make it worth their while.” Something I remind myself of on a daily basis. This may sound vain, or contrived, but I am very aware that people stare at me. In fact, I imagine I’m not alone. Surely you’ve found yourself being watched, as you go about your business. For me, I began to notice it as a teenager, and it made me feel nervous. What were they looking at? Why was I receiving this attention? In my early 20’s, I became a well-known face within the media, so friends would often say that people were staring, as they recognised me. I wasn’t convinced. Travelling to Rome, New York, Paris, people still stared. After a while, I began to feel paranoid. It took a little longer to leave the house, as I found myself checking and rechecking, to ensure that I looked ‘normal.’ Eventually, I realised that no matter how I dress - be it a Gucci tuxe-

do, or simple sportswear, the eyes followed me. Some going as far as to point and tell their friends to turn and look. Yes, I’m over six-foot tall, with a mop of blonde hair, and, as it’s been noted, by certain journalists ‘permatanned.’ As if having a tan - real or fake, is something to be ashamed of. I guess I stand out for my general appearance, even on the streets of cosmopolitan Marbella, but I find myself attracting more attention due to how I dress. I have never been one to stare, or comment on the appearance of others. Don’t get me wrong, I look, I see, I think, ‘oh man, why did you wear that?’ But not once have I smirked, stared or commented. Why would I? It goes back to basic kindness. In fact, over the years I’ve done the opposite, and told complete strangers they look great, when they do. So as those people continue to stare, I continue to act as if I don’t see them, but I do. At a recent cocktail party, I was chatting with a pretty nondescript sort
of chap, who suddenly burst out laughing and drew attention to my choice of shoes - red suede loafers, by the aforementioned Tom Ford. “What were you thinking? How much did you pay for those things?” he almost passed out laughing. I paused a moment, before staring him in the eyes, “€2,000!” Suddenly his mood changed, as if the price tag instantly made the shoes more important than they were. I glanced at his footwear, to see scuffed, basic, square-toed black lace ups, with plastic soles. I smiled and walked away. The following morning as I dressed for breakfast, I decided to adapt a new mantra - dress up, show up, always and all ways. If they’re going to stare, what do I care? I shall act as if I can’t see them from behind my shades. So just imagine, if you’re staring at me, I may well be staring back at you, in horror!

A FOND FAREWELL DEAR Barry Duke, Thank you for writing the article ‘Heart breaking, the final farewell.’ I am in a similar situation with a rescue dog, as I do not know his true age. I have had him for six years and was told when I took him that he was ‘about five.’ He is about 80 per cent Labrador and suffers with his hips. He is on medication but finding it increasingly difficult to move far. I know I will have to decide soon when to have his life ended and reading your story has been a great help. We owe it to our canine companies to reward their faithfulness and constant friendship by giving them the dignity they deserve. I am a recent widow and also I feel too old to have another dog so this one is very special; although I have had many. I always read EWN and enjoy your input, keep up the good work. My partner and I travelled 12,000 miles and passed through Almeria airport to Madrid, we then flew to Heathrow for a flight to Bangkok, we were not tested in any of these airports either going or on our return? Your money or your life CORONAVIRUS is a threat to the global economy as well as to public health. The government must surely now extend the Brexit transition period and take a long-term approach to this crisis. Britain must agree with the EU to extend the Brexit transition period. Businesses and our communities will not cope with any more uncertainty during this outbreak. British companies who trade with the EU do not know what terms they’ll be trading on in less than a year. Add to this the disruption created by Coronavirus and it is reasonable to expect many businesses will not survive. Without decisive action, the government risks leaving us wholly unprepared Today, a large number of people are self-employed, part-time or on zero-hours contracts. That is why we need to think beyond the impact on employers and extend statutory sick pay to the self-employed and those who do not qualify from day one; otherwise many people will simply not be able to afford to self-isolate. This is a public health disaster waiting to happen. Something has to be done to ensure workers are not under pressure to turn up to work when sick, do not lose their jobs if they self-isolate, and receive the sick pay they are entitled to.

Running This meal plan also applies to spinning fanatics, as both activities are cardio intensive. Try giving yourself a few hours to fully digest any large meals before running. If you’re hungry before your run, avocado on toast is the ideal preworkout snack. Avocados contain valuable fats to boost your energy levels. Coronavirus insanity! (TRIGGER WARNING) MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED THE uncertainty of recent world events has really sparked my anxiety more than usual as I am sure it has for everyone. I have driven myself to the edge, by overthinking, the entire world is talking about coronavirus. Facebook blazes with shared articles, the WhatsApp groups ping-ing off constantly, the talk amongst the parents at school last week, you find yourself working yourself up and the feeling of being overwhelmed starts to creep up on you. If you already have mental health problems it’s highly likely that the worries of coronavirus may be affecting how you are coping. I have spent the last two weeks obsessing over watching news, reading all kind of articles, listening to rumours. I have been told over and over again ‘Don’t worry, it’s just a cold,’ ‘You’re panicking for no reason,’ ‘Calm down.’ The sudden uncontrollable fear and anxiety caused me to obsess that I had been infected with the virus, all of a sudden at 11pm at night, I felt my throat swelling up, my chest closing in and I had a killer headache… I could feel my heart racing faster and faster. I got in the shower and scrubbed
my skin raw, convinced I was infected, I next remember the water going cold. Spending the following two days, hardly being able to walk, sit down, wear deodorant or simply cuddle my daughter without being in pain. This was not me wanting to purposely hurt myself, but I couldn’t seem to control my anxiety, the emotional fever spiralled into panic. Overwhelmed by the uncertainty and the future, the rational parts of my mind went offline. The only advice I can offer to anyone feeling like this at the moment is: * Maintain your routine as much as possible. * Self-isolate but keep in contact with loved ones. Don’t feel alone! * Read and listen to the news from reliable sources. * Play a game, do a puzzle, read a book, watch a film. All of those things are practically useful but most importantly voice your fears and thoughts, don’t let anyone tell you that you are panicking for no reason, if you are feeling it, it’s real to you. It means you have to discover the best version of yourself, discovering your true passions and learning to polish them. You have to discover your patience, compassion, your integrity. Learn how to use your own mind and connect it to your heart. Only you can decide the life that you want to live, only you can decide the steps that you are willing to take and sometimes that includes taking the unpopular roads. Of course work is essential! We all have bills to pay and no physical items come for free. We all need a roof over our
head, clothes to wear and food on the table, but we need to learn when to clock off and spend time for ourselves and our family. Work is not our enemy! It only becomes our enemy when we allow it to take over our whole lives. As the saying goes ‘Energy flows where our attention goes.’ The question is, where are you allowing your attention to go? In today’s society, it appears success is measured on status, wealth and fame. We become so trapped and focused on how we believe that working hard and making money means we will be successful but is that really the case? The answer is no! How many of you think success should be measured by happiness, health, being at peace with yourself and surrounded by love and passion? Don’t get me wrong, if your work is something that you truly
enjoy and have a passion for then you are in a win, win situation but if you’re not, then it will always feel like it’s a chore. Do not give up on yourself, please do not think that making a living is all that we are set out to do. There are things that you can do that will enable you to make a living whilst also making a life! You have the power of choice and you can start to live rather than exist! Firstly you have to understand that starting the change is going to be hard work. It is so easy to fall back into old habits as that is what you have trained your mind to believe. Once you accept that you need to be consistent and committed to the change, you will be on the right road. Here are a few steps to help you with your work/life balance: 1. Schedule one thing that you look forward to each day-
This could be anything from 15 minutes meditation, listening to your favourite song, creating a new plan. Whatever works for you! 2. Ask for support - Asking for support doesn’t mean you are weak; in fact it takes great strength. Delegation is the key to success. 3. Concentrate on one thing at a time - whilst it’s great to multi-task, it’s also very exhausting. When you are working, work! When you have family time, focus purely on family time. 4. Set your priorities - Look at what you want your priorities to be, not what you think they should be. As yourself, If I could focus on one thing today, what would it be? Set that answer as your top priority then work on your second, third and so forth.

If the onset of deafness to anybody is a terrible affliction, imagine the repercussions for a musician and composer. And in Beethoven’s case music went way beyond a means to earn a living or to make a name for himself. It was the very reason for his existence and he felt in his soul he had so much he wanted to understand about humanity, the spirit and the universe through the creation of music. He wanted to share this with mankind and he sensed that he could communicate his discoveries through his compositions in a way that transcended speech. He became lonely and his love affairs were unhappy; he never married nor had children. But, despite this, he could transmit love and joy through his music. Such was his refusal to be defeated that, in his last 10 years, totally
deaf, he produced much of the greatest music of all time. By this time, he had become deeply spiritual and produced the mass, ‘Missa Solemnis.’ There followed two more of the greatest of their genres; the Opus 131 String Quartet and of course, the monumental Ninth symphony. At its premiere, Beethoven was unable to hear the thunderous applause behind him. He was motioned to turn round to face the rapturous audience. His only opera, Fidelio, is believed, in many respects, to be the greatest of all operas, because the depth of its story of triumph over adversity could only have been conceived and expressed by somebody who has faced and overcome so much suffering. The courage, resilience and ultimate glory of Beethoven is hugely uplifting.

MITSUBISHI’S ASX model has been revised with a tougher look, more powerful engine and an upgraded interior to help give it a distinctive edge in the hard-fought SUV sector. The ASX is a roomy and capable contender offering very good value for money, with prices starting at €23,457 (£20,295) for the entry-level Dynamic model which is well-equipped with
standard features including alloy wheels LED headlights, privacy glass, heated front seats, cruise control, air-conditioning, and reversing camera. It also has a digital radio, Bluetooth and smartphone link. The ASX uses a 150 hp petrol engine with manual or CVT automatic transmission and four-wheel-drive is available on the top-range Exceed model which I tested recently. This version, with CVT auto gearbox, costs €29.998 (£25,945) and adds extra features including panoramic glass sunroof, leather interior, sat-nav and additional safety kit including lanechange assist, blind-spot

Spacious, practical, versatile and with arresting visual impact, the new ASX is a strong challenger in the SUV sector and has the advantage of being more keenly priced than many of its rivals while still offering a generous level of equipment.
