Now is a time to think; about the elderly, the medical staff who sacrifice their time and health, people with chronic illnesses, and the people who cannot stockpile goods. Take this time to better yourself and, more importantly, the community you know and love.

TOURISTS TAUNT POLICE FOOTAGE of British tourists apparently taunting police in Benidorm, chanting ‘we’ve all got the flu, na na na na!’ in the midst of a coronavirus lockdown, has gone viral. At least 50 Brits can be seen defying the country’s lockdown during the coronavirus crisis, drinking in the streets and shouting as police try to get them back inside.
The clip, filmed from a hotel balcony, was posted on Twitter on Saturday, March 16, with the caption: '’The police clearing away English tourists, already cooked the terraces of Benidorm.’ The footage was met with comments from viewers such as ‘get them back to the UK!’ and ‘what unconsciousness, irresponsibility and stupidity.’ Another shot, of what is believed to be the same in-
cident, shows Brits drinking out of one-litre lager bottles and cans. When asked to move on, they can apparently be heard telling a police officer: ‘We’re not causing any trouble, we’re just walking away.’ Reinforcements were called as two officers struggled to get the British tourists to move, and reportedly used force and pushed several people away.

ALFAZ DEL PI Council has announced a novel way for the public to stay fit while confined to the house to control the spread of coronavirus. Videos with various exercise routines and advice on healthy nutrition have been uploaded to YouTube and live exercise classes will be streamed. The initiative is the brainchild of the Department for Sports, led by Oscar Perez, who thanked the municipal gymnasium, sports centres and all clubs for their involvement. Exercises which can be done at home, compiled by the Alfaz Fitness Club, will be up-

Miguel Ángel Palacios, from the Moviment Albir Personalised Training Centre, will be giving live classes, which can be followed on his Facebook page Moviment Entrenamiento Saludable, at the link https://www.face book.com/pg/Moviment111140750243968/community/. A C A M PA I G N t o f re e Villajoyosa of singleuse plastics is being proposed by the town council. Initially, the aim is to promote the use of reusable products in the council building and other public facilities. But the local authority also wants to launch a major awareness campaign to tackle the problem of the dumping of plastics in
the Mediterranean Sea. Incentives are also being considered for businesses that set up a system of deposit and return of reusable containers, baskets and bags, or offer tap water served in glass bottles or jugs. Councillor for the Environment, Jose Carlos Gil, said: “This is an issue which seriously affects us all. Public institutions must begin by setting an example to the public through
responsible consumption, accompanied by campaigns to raise awareness and inform members of the public about the ecological crisis and the management of plastic waste for single use, while offering an environmentallyfriendly alternative.” The council also plans to develop a waste prevention plan for future fairs, concerts and other events held in the town.

• Staying at home and exceptions
Everyone is expected to stay inside their homes unless they have a valid reason for going out. People are allowed to circulate on public streets to buy food, pharmaceuticals and essential goods, for assistance at medical centres and to get to and from their workplace. The circulation of private vehicles for the above and to fill up at service stations is allowed. Activities have to be carried out individually, with the exception of accompanying people with a disability or for another justifiable reason.
• Education
All public and private schools, universities and education centres have been closed, but online educational activities or distance learning continue where possible.
• Open and shut
All businesses have had to close with the exception of those selling food and drink and essential items, pharmaceuticals, medication, and hygiene products, the press, vehicle fuel, technological and telecommunications equipment, animal food, and launderettes. The doors are closed to all museums, libraries, monuments, entertainment venues, sports facilities and leisure outlets.
• Civil and religious ceremonies
Any civil or religious ceremony has to be in accordance with the measures on avoiding gatherings of people, and with the guarantee, people are at least one-metre apart from each other.
• Public transport
Public transport is still running to enable people to get to work if they have to and to access basic services. Operators are required to take measures to ensure passengers are well separated and to clean vehicles daily in accordance with Health Ministry recommendations.
• Enforcement and fines
Law enforcement and State Security forces are ensuring compliance with extraordinary restrictions. People who do not obey the rules could face fines of up to €600,000 or even a one-year prison sentence in the most serious of cases.

TRAVEL ADVICE UPDATE THE FCO has updated its Travel Advice to state that from Tuesday March 17 until the end of the State of Alarm, Spain is closing its borders to those who wish to enter the country, with some exceptions. The land borders remain open for those leaving Spain. At present, air and maritime borders will remain open following the restrictions put in place by the Spanish government in response to the outbreak of coronavirus (Covid-19). On March 14, the Spanish government introduced a State of Alarm, which imposes significant restrictions on movement throughout Spain in response to the coronavirus outbreak. Transport services will be operating at reduced levels. Public gatherings are banned, most shops, many businesses and all schools and universities are closed, and residents have been instructed to remain at home as much as possible. There are limited, specific exceptions to the requirement to remain at home, in particular
in order to buy food or other essential items, to return home to the primary residence, to go to work if unable to work from home and to carry out caring or similar duties. We keep our travel advice under constant review and recommend that British nationals sign up for alerts, so they know when it has been updated. Anyone with upcoming journeys planned, should check with their airlines and tour operators for the latest information. Urgent measures A NUMBER of urgent measures have been adopted by the Spanish government in a bid to protect the public after coronavirus plunged the country into an official ‘state of alarm.’ The moves are aimed at preventing the spread of the virus, maintaining social protection for employees and the self-employed and ensuring the supply and best distribution of medicines and health products. As such, workers who are infected with COVID-19 or forced into periods of isolation for their own protection, will be eligible for temporary incapacity benefit. The European Council held an extraordinary meeting on March 10, during which Heads of States identified four priorities. Firstly, to limit the spread of the virus. Members reiterated ‘as a maximum priority’ the health of citizens must be protected, and that all actions be based on scientific and health authority recommendations, with proportionate measures. Secondly, the consistent
supply of medication. It was agreed to entrust the Commission with the analysis of the public’s needs and the implementation of initiatives to avoid a shortage, in collaboration with industry representatives. Thirdly, the promotion of research, in particular for the development of a vaccine. And fourthly, deal with the socio-economic consequences. The Union and its members pledged to make use of all resources to support workers and small businesses. To respond to these priorities, the European Commission is working on two fronts sanitary and economic. On the health front, a number of actions have been announced. These include the coordination of measures through daily conferences with the Ministers of Health and Interior and the organisation of a team of epidemiologists and virologists from different Member States to propose guidelines at European level. An inventory of protective equipment and available
breathing apparatus is being drawn up, together with an assessment of production and distribution capabilities. And there will be a strengthening of a European initiative to fund specific research on coronavirus, with €140 million of public and private funding for vaccine research, diagnosis and treatment. The Spanish government approved measures on Saturday which means self-employed workers infected with coronavirus, or in forced quarantine will be eligible for financial aid. The pledge of support is reportedly ‘unlimited’ and will mean that self-employed workers who are forced to stay at home will be considered in the same way as employees on official sick leave by the Department of Social Security. Employers and people who work on a freelance basis will be able to postpone their Social Security payments for three consecutive months in areas and sectors which will be outlined by the health authorities. The contributions will be deferred for 12 months.

Benidor m dog shelter has been forced to close to the public due to the coronavirus crisis, meaning the majority of its 100 dogs will be confined to their kennels as the pound relies on volunteers to exercise the animals. They are still being cared for and their kennels cleaned by two groundsmen. The Benidorm Dog Homing team is already planning the next event, due to take place at the end of the year. Novel approach THE Spanish police deployed all methods in Benidorm on Sunday to ensure residents and holidaymakers obeyed the lockdown ruling. Tactics of road blocks, fining people on the spot, and arrests all worked well, but the most inventive was the use of the beaches’ sun beds. Locals were amazed to see the police gathering hundreds of destitute sun beds and positioning them on the beach to read ‘STAY AT HOME.’ Maggie Wilson told the Euro Weekly News: “I saw lots of policemen heading to the beach from

Wave of support FOLLOWING the national Government declaration of a ‘state of alarm’ for at least 15 days to combat the spread of coronavirus, residents and holidaymakers in Benidorm have pledged their support to local businesses, health care professionals and all those affected. Ed Cullen said: “Our thoughts are with the people who live and work in Benidorm at this time. Yes, we have been inconvenienced by losing our holidays, yes, we have lost money... but this is a short term issue for us. “For the businesses in Benidorm, this could have long term repercussions. Think about others at this time. Good luck to all the ‘locals’ in Benidorm." Cat Sanders added: “Here’s hoping that when all this confusion is over and the virus is contained, that we can all go back to Benidorm. We will be celebrating by going to pubs, restaurants and the beach. Spending money, being kind and tipping the waiters and cleaning staff who will be really struggling the next few weeks. Benidorm is our second home, a place we all love. Will rise again.” Adele Saunders has lived in Benidorm for four years, and said it isn’t really important whether or not the public is happy with the government restrictions or not. “It’s a reality, and we have to do everything we are asked to do to protect ourselves and others. I’ve never seen the streets the way they are today, completely empty barring a few people, but we must follow the guidelines to get through this.” Yolanda Freeman said: “I’m here with friends and we have an apartment until

It’s true that we need to take this virus seriously. It’s capable of causing severe illness, death, and drastic long-term changes to how we live and work. It could even cripple the economy. It’s easy to stay focused on those calamities as they seem to be the only topics covered on the news. But those thoughts would be counterproductive. Obviously, there are things you need to know about the coronavirus outbreak to protect yourself and those around you, but you do not need to become a COVID19 expert, nor do you need to hear about every unpleasant detail from dawn until bedtime.

Life changing WITH shops, beaches and bars closing down as Spain’s Costa del Sol begins to get ready for an emergency lockdown will the residents of the region struggle to cope during a period of isolation? As we have reported there have been long supermarket queues and bare shelves. Can the expat community rally together and push through such a confusing time and go back to normal at the other side? Walking through the streets of Fuengirola it seems that some residents are blatantly ignoring the suggestion to stay indoors and bars like La Sureña next to the train station were quite busy, patrons had even brought their toilet rolls supplies. However, some were very conscious of the risks, such as

COVID19 self test SPAIN’S Ministry of Health has created a coronavirus ‘self test’ online. Concerned members of the public can check symptoms and there is a questions and answers section related to COVID19. The interactive test has been developed by health personnel, and ‘provides the population with an agile and immediate system in which to find updated information on issues related to the coronavirus.’ A Conselleria Sanidade health spokesperson said: “The fact that the test customises answers through specific questions, makes it possible to offer recommendations adapted to the particular situation of each person.” There are four options, depending on the scenario - the option for people with possible symptoms, another for those in isolation offering advice, a third with recommendations for people who have tested positive and a fourth offers general information. It will run alongside other Ministry of Health initiatives, such as the freephone 900 400 166. Coronavirus crisis impact THE Euro Weekly News spoke to Costa Almeria residents, visitors and business owners in Mojacar to get their views on the coronavirus crisis. “I think the whole world has gone completely mad and it’s all just media hype. The beach ban just seems completely ridiculous,” visitor Tammy Sebire told EWN. Her friend Paula Jeeps agrees. Paula and her husband, who are renting in Mojacar while house hunting, are staying upbeat though. She said they plan to enjoy themselves and “just carry on with the G&Ts! “Knowing what’s happened in Italy they should have done it sooner. I think it’s the only way to stop it,” commented ‘swallow’ Carol Fisher on the drastic restrictions under the state of alarm, despite question marks about whether she and husband Allan can get back to the UK from Santander next month. Carol is not daunted by the “enforced staying in” as long as she has access to basic necessities as she has plenty of hobbies, although bird watching enthusiast Allan is less happy. One issue Carol and Allan did raise was dog walking, and whether that was going to be difficult. Geraldine and Brian Jones are in their 80’s and like the Fishers spend winter in Costa Almeria and summer in the UK. Geraldine’s main concern is not knowing how long the coronavirus crisis is going to last and whether they’ll be “trapped” in Spain
RESIGNED: Mojacar Playa restaurant owner Jenna Mincheva believes the lockdown is the only option. Louise Pallett, who has lived in Mojacar for 18 years, is another who believes the restrictions are necessary, especially for the elderly. “I’m in my 60’s, so I don’t feel I’m at risk, but obviously we’ve got to obey the rules.” One of Louise’s main worries is the PAWS-PATAS animal charity shop which she runs in Las Buganvillas in Vera, telling EWN, “We don’t know whether we’re going to be allowed to stay open, because our money keeps the animal shelter going.” The owner of Mojacar Playa eatery Badger’s Jenna Mincheva is resigned to having to close the doors to her business, even though some of the produce she had bought will inevitably have to be thrown away. “There’s no other option: I totally agree with what is being done,” she said.

Owing to the Covid-19 virus, only employees, boat owners and buyers will be allowed inside the harbourside fish market, the guild’s secretary Joan Mulet announced. Newly wed’s pledge of support A NEW bride whose Benidorm honeymoon was cancelled on Saturday (March 14) - an hour before departure - sent messages of support to the resort’s businesses, holidaymakers and residents caught up in the coronavirus lockdown. Helen Kissane and Frank Wood tied the knot in Barnsley on Friday, March 13, and together with six friends, were looking forward to flying to sunny Benidorm. Helen told Euro Weekly News: “We found out an hour before that Jet 2 were cancelling our flights, the day after our wedding. But I knew we weren’t going because the taxi driver told me in the car that they were turning planes around mid air. Jet 2 has been ok so far, to be fair. “I’m glad we didn’t fly into a ghost town, but we feel for all of the businesses, St Patrick’s Day celebrations are such a big event for them.” Helen, who also celebrated her birthday yesterday, added: “Our honeymoon is cancelled, but we will find something else to do. Cooperative attempts SANITISING to soldier on THE CITY
MORE than 65 per cent of the Altea Agricultural Cooperat i v e ’s 3 9 7 a s s o c i a t e s c a n celled their 2020 subscriptions. The cooperative, founded in 1948 when agriculture was the town’s principal source of employment and income, announced last month that it had accumulated debts of almost €8 million and had begun insolvency proceedings. Following a tense general meeting last Friday, the majority of the cooperative’s remaining 136 members voted to continue operating. Between them, they expect to produce just over one million kilos of citrus fruit and nisperos in 2020, although this falls far short of 2015’s 20 million kilos and 553 associates. Local fruit will now be marketed by Safirfruits based in Alginet (Valencia) to ensure that growers are paid directly for their produce and are not affected

A STREET disinfection plan has been rolled out in Alicante City with more than 500 workers assigned to sanitise the roads, pavements, public areas and shopping centres with high pressure equipment. The mayor, Luis Barcala, has also ordered the concessionary company for the cleaning, collection and management of waste, UTE Alicante, to ensure all containers and litter bins are disinfected ‘with the aim of achieving the best conditions of hygiene and sanitation in the streets of Alicante.’ Barcala has suspended the collection of bulky items at the request of residents, the cleaning of beaches and bathing areas and mobile ecopoint services. But he has ensured that normal waste collection and cleaning services will continue to operate on a daily basis, and has called on members of the public to do their bit to help by disposing of waste responsibly and avoiding dumping bags on public roads. For its part, UTE has taken special measures to disinfect all vehicles, tools and equipment, and introduced a staggered shift pattern so that employees are not working in crowds.

BENIDORM’S lockdown has had a direct impact on more than 100 dogs at the town’s shelter which rely on volunteers to get them out of their kennels. On Sunday, March 15, Benidorm Dog Homing, which last week raised an incredible €18,000 to give these animals a second chance at life, announced the shelter is closed until further notice. “All dogs are safe and fed, and kennels cleaned daily still by Tito and Andreas, the groundsmen,” said a spokesperson. Perfectly able - By Julie Frank I HAVE a condition called Asperger’s. As most people know, it’s on the Autistic
spectrum. But high functioning. I refuse to use the word ‘suffer’ because I don’t. I just have it. There are a few things I struggle with. But I’m generally happy and perfectly able. Apart from my odd sense of humour and becoming engrossed in certain subjects, you wouldn’t know there’s anything ‘wrong’ with me. Greta Thunberg famously also has Asperger’s. I do get annoyed when people call her disabled. Or say her parents are exploiting a mentally ill child. I really don’t consider it a mental illness. Yes, a few things are challenging. But we can excel in our chosen specialised subjects/obsessions. Her’s is the planet. Whether you agree or not with her views. We should all agree that it is great she has found her purpose and confidence, so young. Because for many of us girls, teenage years can
be the most difficult and cofusing. The social norms that are expected of us don’t come easy. So, we tend to ‘fake it.’ Which is exhausting to keep up. That causes a lot of anxiety. This got me thinking about other social norms I find odd because of my condition. Small talk is one, it seems so pointless. British etiquette too. Why are their unwritten rules about how you should eat and talk at a dinner table? It doesn’t make the food taste any better! Also, people invading my personal space. One of the things that the Coronavirus has forced us all to do is ‘social distancing.’ Standing apart from each other. I think it’s great! I’ve never understood why random strangers feel the need to invade your personal space if they’re not forced to. People who walk too close behind me really irritate me.
It’s not that I think they will do something bad to me. I just don’t want them there! It’s just a shame the virus isn’t forcing people not to tailgate on the roads here too! That’s another thing that winds me up. It’s so rude and dangerous, regardless of my Asperger’s! Because of my condition, I also have a few sensory issues. Smells and sounds can be heightened. Another silver lining of the virus is that people are wearing masks. Bad breath is one of the things I hate the most! Anyway, Coronavirus, or not. We should respect each other’s boundaries and health. Don’t cough and sneeze into the air, ever. Wash your hands regularly too. Brush your teeth too! We shouldn’t have needed a pandemic to remind of these simple things! Quite frankly, people seem to have lost their manners!

€6 million school project A €6 MILLION project to completely reconstruct a primary school in Villajoyosa has been put out to tender, though the town hall has stressed a deadline for bids has not yet been confirmed in light of the coronavirus crisis. Plans for the Dr Alvaro Esquerdo Primary School were approved in January. Councillor for Education, Xente Sebastià, said: “The estimated construction time contemplated is between 450 days at least and 548 at the most. “Unfortunately, with the state of alert in place, the deadlines for submission are suspended. When this alarm state is lifted, the tendering deadlines will start to run.” He added that he hopes “this situation will end as soon as possible for the sake of citizens,” and so that the project can be completed as soon as possible. “With the conclusion of this contract, the aim is to satisfy the need to provide the Dr Alvaro Esquerdo School with decent and adequate facilities,” said Andreu Verdú, mayor of Villajoyosa.

CATASTROPHY: Rescue scenarios recreated at La Nucia Training Camp for Rescue Dogs. RESCUE dogs and their guides from across Spain visited La Nucia last weekend to take part in a three-day training exercise. The town’s Municipal Training Camp for Rescue Dogs staged a variety of scenarios to put the dogs through their paces, including a series of collapsed structures. The idea is to recreate the aftermath of a catastrophic event, with ‘victims’ hidden in difficult to access locations. And on Saturday morning, a television report was made for CECOVA, Nursing Council of the Community of Valencia,
demonstrating how a rescue is carried out and how a USAR 13 health team locate a victim following an earthquake. La Nucia Rescue Dog Training Camp is used for training and practice in rescue techniques by USAR 13 as well as other official entities and NGOs. Last month, the camp hosted an international search and rescue event, in which canine units from the Fire Department and the Army from Bolivia, Guatemala, Portugal, Colombia and Spain took part. The training session was organised by the NGO USA 13 in collaboration with La Nucia Council.

Severely stretched AN Alicante police force is severely stretched with a dozen officers down after one of their colleagues tested positive for coronavirus. As a result, all 12 San Vicente del Raspeig Local Police officers are in quarantine with their families as a precaution. Mayor, Jesus Villar, confirmed the situation, and said the council is now waiting for the Health Department to advise on how to proceed and when the officers can return to work.
Pensioners stranded A GROUP of 40 elderly holidaymakers, some with health issues, are reportedly stranded in Alicante. They travelled to Benidorm with Imserso, but what should have been a relaxing break soon turned into a nightmare, according to Diario de Avisos. All 40 of the pensioners had planned to return to Tenerife, but the Spanish government’s announcement that the coun-
try is in a ‘state of alarm’ saw their flight cancelled. They were offered an alternative flight on Wednesday, and had to spend the night in a hotel in Alicante, but then they were on their own - causing anguish and panic attacks, it was reported. Some have health problems and need medication while others don’t have the funds to find accommodation.

CELEBRATION: Club members remember much-loved friend Jim Fry. MEMBERS of Benidorm Friendship Club paid a touching tribute to Jim Fry during a celebration of his life at Camping Villasol. Jim, was a long term member of the club and is sadly missed by all his friends, having passed away in December 2019. Poignantly, the celebration was held on March 8, which would have been
Jim’s 90th birthday. Jim’s nephew, Al Griffin with his wife Kaye and niece Kathy, travelled from Colorado USA, where Jim was from, to be a part of the tribute. Jim was a much travelled man and took part enthusiastically in all of the club’s activities. A spokesperson said: WHe was well loved and will be sadly missed by all who came to know him.”

Costa Blanca hotels to close It was ordered to be carried out ‘in an orderly manner’ over the next 72 hours a Hosbec statement began, after members agreed that establishments should re-
main closed while the State of Alarm lasts. Hosbec had informed tour operators and travel agents of its members’ decision, asking them to ensure that their
clients left within 72 hours of the notification, vacating their accommodation before midnight today, Thursday, March 19. “This is a clear situation of force majeure to safeguard our employees, our clients and the population in general while complying scrupulously with the March 14 decree occasioned by the Covid-19 virus,” the statement continued. Hotel and tourist activities were clearly incompatible with confining the population, Hosbec reasoned, and if hotels remained open it would be impossible to maintain the isolation required to control the
coronavirus pandemic. “We would have liked the order to come from the government, but in the absence of a political decision, hoteliers decided to self-regulate by applying a minimum of good sense and responsibility at this grave time.” Hundreds of businesses have already decided to close, and many others are accepting this as an overriding necessity in controlling the health crisis that is precipitating a grave economic crisis, Hosbec said. Seventy-two hours gave visitors sufficient time to leave, the statement continued, as many had already
planned to leave following the first government decree on Friday, March 13. Long-term residents in holiday accommodation as well as those living on campsites would not be expected to leave as they will be able to comply with selfisolation regulations, Hosbec added. The association also recognised that it was possible some hotels would remain open, but emphasised that for the common good guests should be obliged to remain in their rooms, leaving them only for the justified reasons stipulated in the government decree of March 15.

Important ECJ Court Decision on IRPH

AS anticipated, on March 3, 2020 the Superior Court of Justice of the European Union (ECJ) issued its final decision with regards to the Mortgage Loan Interest Index IRPH; used by many Spanish lenders to establish the interest rate on numerous mortgage loans.
THIS judgement allows us to point out some relevant aspects that must be taken into account before presenting any claim to try
to recover part of the money paid to the bank by way of interest in such IRPH cases. Firstly, the Spanish courts
asked the European Court if the effects of European directive 93/13 for consumer protection are applicable in the case of IRPH, as it is an official index published in the official Spanish bulletins. And the answer was in the affirmative, so any claim must be checked to see whether it was a transparent clause. Secondly, the Court has indicated the importance of consumers being made fully aware of the consequences of the IRPH clauses. The Court has indicated that the Spanish courts are obliged to analyse whether the consumer obtained sufficient information to understand and evaluate with all guarantees the conditions of the loan and it is essential to es-
tablish whether the lending banks informed the client of the evolution of IRPH compared to other indices, like EURIBOR, etc. Finally, it is worth highlighting the court’s interpretation of the effects that a possible nullification of the IRPH clause must have. In this sense, the court contends that it is the Spanish courts that must decide whether, as an essential element of the contract, the abolishment of the IRPH clause would allow the contract to continue existing or it could mean the full revocation of the contract. In the event the Spanish courts confirms that the loan agreement can continue to exist if the IRPH clause is declared null and void, we would be in a scenario in which con-
sumers could claim all the interest paid up to date. We understand a mortgage loan contract without interest is totally possible, so the cancellation of the IRPH clause does not imply the nullity of the whole contract and therefore we believe all the interest paid should be refunded. Otherwise, if the courts decide that the contract could not continue to exist, the complete nullity of the contract would imply very harmful effects for the consumer and the Spanish judges have the power to set a substitute interest rate, which we understand should be the one set as a substitute in the mortgage loan deed itself, normally the EURIBOR. In summary, the ECJ has
declared that the Spanish courts must make sure that the IRPH clause was included with all the necessary information and if otherwise, urges the Spanish judges to declare it null and void; or exchange it for another interest rate, which would mean significant refunds of money. POINTS BASED DRIVING LICENCE VALID DRIVING LICENCE You can legally drive in Spain with your existing driving licence for the first two years of residence, but after six months you must register your details with the provincial traffic authorities. After two years, you must obtain a Spanish driving licence or face a €200 fine. At the time of publishing this article, UK nationals can exchange their UK driving licence for a Spanish driving licence. However with the Brexit process, we recommend you stay up to date via the gov.uk website. Driving licences need to be renewed every 10 years up to the age of 65, and then every five years. POINTS BASED SYSTEM Spain has a driving licence points system. Drivers start with 12 points and can loose points for fines depending on the severity of the offence. Once you loose all 12 points, you loose your licence for six months. A
traffic offence can be between two to six points, with a maximum of eight points in one day. If an offence is severe, it may result in the temporary loss of licence. Keeping all your points will help reduce your vehicle insurance premiums. Some of the offences where points are lost; driving while using a mobile phone or over the legal alcohol limit is six points. Whilst driving without a seatbelt is three points. FULL LOSS OF POINTS If you lose all your points, you will need to complete a road awareness course of a total of 24 hours that can be attended over your six to12 month ban period. And sit a driving theory test. You can check how many points you have by going to the Direccion General de Trafico (DGT) website, and create a password.

CRUZ ROJA Spain (Red Cross) is calling on all of its volunteers to concentrate on the most vulnerable members of society as COVID19 grips the nation. The non-profit organisation has more than 200,000 volunteers in more than 1,400 towns and cities throughout Spain.
And it has launched a campaign to ‘reinforce the intervention with the most vulnerable people’ during the coronavirus pandemic. Cruz Roja’s General Contingency Plan for COVID-19 aims to increase the care provided to 400,000 people throughout the country who it has identified as being particularly vulnerable
to the coronavirus: older people, people with disabilities, people with chronic diseases and those who participate in its health programmes. It also intends to increase calls to the vulnerable to inform and detect specific needs, as well as up the distribution of food, hygiene kits and medication.

More holiday lets legalised BENIDORM Town Hall has issued approximately 300 compatibility certificates for tourist accommodation so far this year. “Before the first quarter has even finished we processed 400 compatibility certificates, almost 300 of them for accommodation,” said Benidorm mayor Toni Perez. He was speaking at the fifth National Tourist Apartments and Villas held last week at Benidorm Town Hall’s function room before coronavirus regulations put the town in shutdown. More than 1,000 certificates legalising holiday apartments were issued in 2019, pointed out Perez, describing the resort’s tourist accommodation offer as “one its greatest allies in offering happiness to the world.”
Rise in victims FOR the second time in a week, Benidorm condemned more gender violence, this time in the Basque region. A 60-year-old man in Abanto-Zierbena (Vizcaya) has been accused of killing his wife, aged 54, and their daughter, aged 24, who were found dead from stab wounds in the family home. Local mayor Toni Perez, Equality councillor Angela Zaragozi, the municipal Corporation and
members of public protested with a minute’s silence outside the town hall. Sixteen women have died this year in gender-related killings and Benidorm’s Equality department announced that its services and specialised personnel are available to all women in threatening situations. The department also reminded potential victims the 016 telephone helpline operates 24 hours a day in 52 languages.

ALL of Benidorm’s beaches and coves were closed last Sunday on the orders of the town hall. This followed the previous day’s veto on swimming and sunbathing but was extended to a total ban encompassing the entire seafront in order to stop the spread of the Covid-19 virus. “Barring the public from the sea, beaches and promenades is one of the hardest decisions for any mayor to take,” declared Benidorm’s mayor Toni Perez. “I am sure that I can count on the understanding and responsibility of all of us in Benidorm in these moments,” he said. Perez called for “responsibility, prudence, public spiritedness and solidarity” on the part of the local population in complying down to the last detail with the protection measures announced by the health authorities and public administrations.

Town hall shutdown BENIDORM Town Hall closed its doors on Monday evening after an employee tested positive for Covid-19. “From today and until further notice all municipal activity is suspended in the central building,” Benidorm’s mayor Toni Perez announced. “All municipal employees as well as any person who habitually works in these installations will be carrying out the self-protection and self-isolation procedures required in mild cases.” Quoting national and regional requirements during the State of Emergency, the mayor’s communique explained that the situation was one of “sporadic contact in the workplace” and did not require more stringent measures.
This is Benidor m’s first confir med case of Covid-19 and closing the principal town building on health grounds follows other measures that have included closing all beaches, promenades, sports centres and public buildings. During the time that Benidor m’s central town hall building is closed, the public will be able to contact municipal services via its www.sede. benidorm.org website or the Administrative Extension offices located elsewhere in Benidorm. Benidorm is not the only Marina Baja town hall to close as Altea, La Nucia and Finestrat all issued decrees from their mayors, closing their buildings but still providing telephone attention.

All events on hold COMPLYING with national and regional directives to prevent the spread of Covid-19, all forthcoming cultural and sporting events have been suspended. The 18th edition of Alfaz’s Mostra de Teatre cycle of plays will now be held next October, the town hall announced. Selecting the queens who will preside the town fiestas that are held in November each year has also been postponed. So too has the X Millas Costa Blanca race that would have been held on Sunday, March 29 as well as all teaching sessions at the La Lira Music School and band rehearsals. The Festival Canino adopt-a-dog event will be held at a later date, while all gatherings involving large numbers of people including the open-air market next Sunday, March 20, will not now take place. In accordance with the decree issued by the regional government’s Education department, all schools must close until further notice. This applies to all Alfaz schools from kindergartens to university and includes the conservatoire, language schools, the adult learning centre, occupational centre and the employment workshop.

Like most other Costa Blanca beaches, the red flag is flying and the bathing areas and children’s games area are cordoned off to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Before the regional lockdown, levelling was carried out as always when winter ends, beach furniture was restored, the children’s play areas spruced up and wooden walkways put in place. Keeping the beach in optimum condition is always a priority as the Raco de l’Albir has received a Blue Flag for more than three decades. This certifies that the Albir beach meets the stringent standards set by the Foundation for Environmental Education.
THE new road connecting Calle San Miguel and Avenida Sant Pere will improve communications and mobility in Albir. The €80,000 project has been financed by Mercadona, which is carrying out improvements to its Albir centre, Alfaz Town Hall explained. Work is also due to recommence on a bridge over the Soler streambed which at present splits Calle San Miguel into two sections. Houses and public buildings are located on
the northern side of the road, which connects with Avenida de l’Albir while the Centro Social Platja Albir is located on the southern side, together with the football pitch and shops, ending at Avenida de Sant Pere. Once these two sections are linked the new road will ease traffic flow at two problematic intersections by providing an alternative route for vehicles that have left the N-332 main road and are driving towards Benidorm on the Cami Vell d’Altea,
Senior citizens’ MEMBERS of Alfaz’s Hogar del Pensionista donated €1,000 raised through charity events, to the Red Cross. The cheque was presented to Mara Martinez, president of Benidorm’s Red Cross branch, at an informal get-together attended by Alfaz’s mayor Vicente Arques, Health and Social Welfare councillor Marisa Cortes. Members of the Hogar del Pensionista raise funds each year with a programme of charity events and in 2019 donated a total of €5,000 to different groups.

Altea NEWS JAUME LLINARES, Altea’s mayor, accompanied by councillors and town hall officials, recently visited revamped Villa Gadea. The €200,000 cost of rehabilitating the mansion, once a private house but now municipal property, was subsidised by the regional government’s Culture department. Work involved repairs to the roof, renovating woodwork and restoring the stucco on exterior walls. The toilets were modernised and made accessible. “Restoring Villa Gadea was completed by the end of January, but all the pertinent certificates have now arrived from the Generalitat,” Llinares explained. “It is already being used for classes for the Beatik Altea Festival but it’s spectacular to see the villa now and the grounds are marvellous,” Llinares said. “The house still doesn’t have all the improvements it deserves,” the mayor admitted. “There is no lift and the problem of the skylight needs resolving to make it more energy-efficient.” Despite these minor drawbacks, Llinares stressed that Villa Gadea was now stunning and would house Alicante University’s Enric Valor Chair and Miguel Hernandez University’s Anetta Nicoli Chair. “We shall also have the Carmelina Sanchez Cutillas informal museum and master classes for the Altea Beatik Festival are currently held here,” he said.
Six-year plan ALTEA’S Environment department is pruning and thinning trees on 9.20 hectares of Pinar de Calces in Sierra Bernia. Protected as an Asset of Local Relevance, the pinewoods are the object of a six-year comprehensive forestry management programme (POI) to improve the trees’ condition. The entire €33,403 cost has been met by Alicante’s provincial council, the Diputacion. Referring to regional and national directives, a town hall statement declared that it was necessary to take into consideration that health measures
introduced to combat the spread of Covid-19 required additional municipal reorganisation. In order to preserve and guarantee public services and to protect the health of public sector employees, the town hall said, by limiting nonessential meetings and encouraging the use of videoconferences.
ALTEA’S Plat de Calent (Warming Food) gastronomy event was won by the Ca Toni restaurant in Altea la Vieja. Sixteen Altea restaurants took part in last February’s scheme to promote Altea’s classic winter dishes made with locally-sourced produce in menus which cost between €20 and €30 each, said Altea’s Commerce councillor Miguel de la Hoz. More than 600 clients cast votes after their meals, placing El Mallol and El Pescador in second and third place. The winning restaurant received a year’s free publicity in the Gastroeventos online publication as well as two months of advertisements in the El Escaparate magazine and spots on Radio Altea. The two first prizes of €100 vouchers to spend in Altea shops went to Jaime Lloret and Pere Lloret while the prize of a meal in the winning restaurant was won by Vicent Escortell.

Too hot for comfort CALPE Town Hall announced last week that it was suspending all gatherings linked to the March 19 Fallas fire fiestas. The decision followed the regional government and national governments’ restrictions on large-scale public gatherings to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 virus. Like all Costa Blanca towns with a Fallas tradition, Calpe will postpone the celebrations until the risk of passing on the coronavirus has passed. Favourable vote for family meeting ALL Calpe councillors backed a family meeting point for children in conflictive home situations. These supervised meeting points can be used by
parents with shared custody to meet and collect their children, particularly those involved in hostile separation proceedings or situations where the mother
is a victim of gender violence. An earlier proposal for Calpe’s own family meeting point was previously rejected by the regional government’s Equality department, pointed out the town hall’s Social Welfare councillor Noelia Ciscar. The latest proposal was put forward by Compromis councillors Carlos Ortin and Ximo Perles, prompting Ciscar to comment that their party, which heads the Generalitat’s Equality department, could “have taken a little more interest” originally. The Compromis councillors then reminded Ciscar that the regional government had also rejected the meeting point because the premises offered by Calpe’s Social Welfare installation were inadequate. “It was a real rat-trap,” Perles said.

TOWN CALL: ‘Only believe official sources’ call.
Discouraging rumours CALPE was obliged recently to call on the local population not to spread or believe rumours of local Covid-19 cases. Last Friday Calpe’s local government issued a municipal decree shutting down all but essential services, but at the time of writing no cases had been reported and the town hall asked residents to trust official sources only.
Town hall let off the hook CALPE Town Hall will pay €116,280 for compulsorily-purchased land instead of the €2.3 million that the owners demanded. The Upper Court of Justice (TSJ) considered that land in Calpe’s Rafol area was rural, not urban. The TSJ’s verdict was “very positive,” Calpe’s mayor Ana Sala declared. “This is a very satisfactory ruling. We have defended municipal interests and saved more than €2 million.” The 15,000 square metres of land, now municipal property, could be used for future infrastructure, she said, bringing to an end 10 years of legal tussling. Between 2005 and 2007, during Javier Morato’s time as mayor, the town hall occupied the land for fairs and events, including the Oktoberfest beer festival. This came to an end in 2008 when the

town hall had to pay the owners €1.1 million compensation for illegally occupying their land. This was followed by the compulsory purchase proceedings, with both parties attaching a vastly different value to the land, which the town hall estimated was worth €53,000 compared to the owners’ €2.9 million. Alicante’s Provincial Expropriation Board valued the land at €95,000 which, with interest, amounted to €121,000. The town hall paid this amount to the owners who appealed against the decision but lowered their claim to €2.3 million. Neither party is in the right, ruled the TSJ, which fixed a compulsory purchase value of €116,280 on the land, plus interest, meaning that the town hall will now need to pay only €21,000 more.
IN the midst of the Covid-19 crisis, Local Police officers announced that they were prepared to work overtime once more. Earlier conflict and disagreements regarding work conditions and shifts were put to one side as officers agreed to inform the town hall that they would carry out any extra duties that were necessary. In a statement addressed to the town
Police put the public first hall’s Traffic and Public Safety c o u n c i l l o r, Domingo Sanchez, and to the local population in general, union officials representing Local Police officers declared that they had decided to temporarily suspend their earlier ban on overtime or extra duties.
This was due to the health emergency that the country was currently experiencing, the communique continued, explaining that officers wanted to be able to guarantee an effective service to the public ‘facing possible events caused by the coronavirus.’

TEULADA-MORAIRA was one of eight Valencian Community towns to receive a Generalitat certificate of sustainability and energy efficiency. All took part in the EU-funded Sherpa Project and Ruben Martinez Dalmau, a regional vice-president and head of the Generalitat’s Housing and Bioclimatic Architecture department, stressed the important role of town halls in achieving sustainability. Sherpa is a transnational cooperation project in the Interreg Med programme that involves 13 European countries from the norther n shores of the Mediterranean. All members work together for sustainable growth and the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the construction industry while reinforcing the regional and local capacity of public administrations. Sherpa Project, which provides help in reforming and rehabilitating housing and urban regeneration within the 2018-2021 State Housing Plan, specifically addresses the need to decarbonise the construction sector and, in the town halls’ case, public buildings, Martinez Dalmau said.
Pensioner speared in nasty fall A MAN of 70 was injured while pruning a tree on his land in Teulada’s Cami del Ponent de la Via. Sources from Emergency Services explained later that he fell from a ladder and was speared by a metal rod, which pierced his side. The Teulada-Moraira Local Police, Guardia Civil and the fire brigade came to the rescue of the elderly man who was transferred to hospital, still with the metal in his side. The same sources also revealed that at the time of writing the injured man was in a stable condition.

A HELICOPTER will deliver the materials needed to restore the otherwise inaccessible Cap d’Or tower in Moraira. “The helicopter will fly along the coast to avoid disturbing residents as much as possible,” municipal sources said. Rehabilitating the tower, built in the 16th century to protect the coast from pirate attacks, is included in a €453,992 project that will also restore an adjoining Moorish water deposit and carry out a study of the Iberian settlement known to have existed near the spot where the tower now stands. Javea NEWS Police are planning ahead JAVEA’S Local Police are modifying traffic regulations to incorporate personal mobility vehicles (PMVs). Despite empty streets and the self-isolation regulations currently imposed by the Covid-19 State of Alarm, once these are lifted the PMVs will be out in force once more, particularly electric scooters. Neighbouring Denia has already modified by-laws with fines of up to €80 while Benidorm is imposing much stiffer fines starting at €80 and in some cases reaching €500. Since last summer, electric-scooter riders in the Marina Baja town must use a crash helmet and be covered by third party insurance. They are also barred from pavements, pedestrian streets and bicycle lanes that are marked on pavements. Javea’s Local Police are still working on modifications to existing by-laws but complaints from residents make it abundantly clear that they wish to see them banned from pavements. Once completed the new regulations will be announced publicly, police sources said.

JAVEA Town Hall is preparing to charge for parking at the Granadella and Portitxol beaches next summer. “The location of both beaches, the absence of public transport and the scarcity of parking spaces have caused huge traffic problems as well as safey issues in recent years,” the town hall said. “Since 2017 we have been limiting access to both beaches with a barrier to prevent more cars from driving down once the beaches’ parking spaces are full,” municipal sources explained. In Granadella’s case beachgoers were provided with public transport once there was no room at the beach, but the town hall is considering charging private vehicles to park at the beach to offset this cost. Despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain blood is through the generosity of the public. The blood is carefully screened for disease to make sure it is safe. After a tattoo, you must wait four months to be eligible to donate. After surgery, the exclusion period will depend on the type of intervention. DAVID WHYBROW: Was a popular member of the U3A.
Sudden death of Javea U3A Groups Coordinator MEMBERS of Javea U3A joined friends and family at Javea Crematorium on Saturday to celebrate the life of Groups Coordinator David Whybrow, who died suddenly in Denia Hospital four days earlier. He and his wife Helen moved to Spain four years ago and quickly became popular members of the U3A, joining in several groups and activities before David was elected to the executive committee. Together they organised last year’s successful Glitter Ball at Salones Carrasco in Javea.
David and Helen were also members of the Teulada/Moraira U3A, where they enjoyed a number of activities including the Wine Tasting group. David’s many friends were joined at the service by his family, including daughter Tracey and son Simon. His other daughter, Lucinda, who lives in Australia, listened to the service via a video link. Helen requested any donations to be given to the U3A Javea nominated charity of the year, Make A Smile.

Short selling restricted
REGULATORS around the world are banning the short selling of shares in vulnerable companies due to the coronavirus. In Spain a list of 69 companies listed on the Ibex Stock Exchange have been given this protection in order to ensure that the compa nies don’t suffer such a huge crisis in confidence that they go under. The decision is also to ensure that if share prices drop dramati cally that the companies cannot be bought up by foreign interests which could be to the disadvan tage of the Spanish economy.

Spanish banks care THE Spanish Banking Association (AEB) believes that the government should not impose a moratorium on the payment of interest by busi ness affected by the coronavirus, as Italy has done. There is a code of good conduct which Spanish banks follow and many are restructuring debts with mortgage guarantees on housing and they are looking at other sectors that are suffering. It says that the financial institu tions are demonstrating their sup port for the selfemployed and small businesses by introducing new credit lines worth hundreds of millions of euros.

Consequently I decided to take this opportunity to wish you all strength, luck and a healthy conclusion to this unprecedented threat to our existence. I would also like to add that when the emergency passes, as it surely will, the Chinese authorities will have a great deal of questions to answer. Irrespective of exactly how it came into existence, this virus has most certainly originated in China and the world deserves some explanation and possibly huge amounts of compensation from a country that has, by one way or another, become one of the wealthiest on the planet. am able to voice my opinions without fear of ‘disappearing’ as so many that live in the country you work from actually have, ok? In the UK the present situation is being compared to the
emergency circumstances we found ourselves in during the Second World War. Unfortunately, by the reports coming in, the indigenous population has been infiltrated and is nothing like it was in those dangerous times. Back then the citizens of the UK looked out for each other. People stood shoulder to shoulder and assisted those more vulnerable. The disgraceful images of screaming individuals shoving others, including the elderly, out of the way and grabbing goods off the shelves like marauding animals is I’m afraid merely a reflection on how British culture and values have been dragged down over the last generation or so. If I am able to build a mansion in a town of cardboard houses, I don’t invite all those inhabitants to come and live with me. If they have made no contribution in the creation of my existence they will have no pride, respect or even understanding of my home and will ul-
timately tear it down. Digressing slightly it has just been announced that all those over 70 years of age may be restricted to their homes for up to four months! This could apply both in Spain and the UK. I can only say that if this does occur the decent and caring members of society must do all they can to aid and assist those who are in need and unable to help themselves. Let’s just show by example that the despicable actions of many who have been given succour in Western communities are a primitive disgrace and in no way acceptable in any civilised and caring society. NEWS that ‘cleanfluencer’ Mrs Hinch’s third book, ‘The Little Book Of Lists,’ received twice as many orders as double-Booker winner Hilary M a n t e l ’s l a t e s t a c c l a i m e d publication, ‘The Mirror and the Light,’ maybe isn’t so surprising. What is surprising is that Mrs Hinch’s tome isn’t available until April 2! With 3.2 million Instagram followers and her last two books coining in £5 million combined, Mrs Hinch is the nom de plume of former Essex hairdresser Sophie Hinchliffe. As for Hilary Mantel, some critics have suggested her new novel which is longer than the two preceding books (nearly 900 pages) is just too huge. Ominously prefaced by a five-and-a-half-page list of characters and two five-generation royal family trees, it’s been described as overpopulated and overloaded.
MOPPING UP: Books can’t be compared.
One critic declared ‘bloat has set in,’ another that it came ‘clogged with research data’ that one reader compared to wading through a Sargasso Sea of Tudor haberdashery, 16th-century foodstuffs, aristocratic genealogies and dynastic matrimonial entanglements. Well, I bet Dame Hilary’s gutted at this news: someone may even lose their head over it! So if Mrs Hinch is going to clean up, maybe she should add some tips on how to get blood stains off the chopping block? Seriously though, what is the point of comparing two entirely different books aimed at entirely different fanbases? Does ‘Thomas the Tank Engine’ outsell ‘The Unabridged History
of North Korean Dictatorship’? Similarly, does The Financial Times outsell The Sun, or does University Challenge have more viewers than Love Island (though maybe if the Love Island teams appeared on University Challenge...?) Frankly, neither type of book grabs me. What I like reading is exactly what I like writing - psychological, suspense and crime thrillers - the grittier the better. And what makes me happy? Seeing them sell well around the world (as you know, all profits to Costa del Sol Cudeca cancer charity). Every picture tells a story BARRY DUKE MY workspace at home is dominated by a large and very peculiar canvas that I b o u g h t i n 1 9 7 5 f ro m a Spanish painter well known in art circles in Sitges and nearby Barcelona. Gonçal Sobré was a true eccentric, and he and I became great friends when I visited a hotel he owned in Sitges, the gorgeous Hotel Romàntic, built in 1897. I’d always had a taste for wacky art and the moment I saw Gonçal’s painting I knew I had to have it. Since then, each time I glance at it memories come flooding back of the best and most surreal holiday I’ve ever had. The first is the recollection of being woken up early one morning by Gonçal. PECULIAR PAINTING: But the memories are priceless. citement. ‘Get dressed, grab your camera and come with me now,’ he trumpeted. Hungover, and still half asleep I got into his beat-up old jalopy and demanded to know where he was taking me.
He replied ‘You’ll see when we get there.’ Half an hour later I found myself in a small village, the central square of which was dominated by a statue of General Franco. Attached to it were chains, and within minutes of us
arriving, a tractor brought the statue crashing to the ground and an enormous cheer echoed round village. It happened immediately after the news spread throughout the world that the vicious dictator had died of a heart attack, and similar statues were destroyed in the wake of his death. The second abiding memory I have of that holiday was when a posse of pilgrims on their way back from Lourdes arrived at the hotel at around midnight, each carrying a six-litre bottle of ‘holy’ water. These were not nice people. They rudely demanded that the water be taken up to their rooms by the concierge, a man in his late 80s who had to use the stairs to lug the bottles and luggage up to their rooms (the hotel did not have a lift). He wasn’t thanked. Nor did he receive a single tip. The next morning Gonçal was at the reception desk when the pilgrims’ leader stormed up to him and insisted that bottled wa-
ter be sent up to each of their rooms. The pious party had discovered that the tap water was salty, and they couldn’t make tea. A fiery atheist, Gonçal thundered: ‘Use your bloody holy water to make tea, or go to my café and buy some.’ Ten minutes later the pilgrims stormed out of the hotel in a fury. During the 45 years that I’ve owned the painting, it never once crossed my mind to have it valued. So this week I contacted Balclis, a leading auction house in Barcelona, and sent them a link to a website detailing Gonçal’s history. To my astonishment I received a reply from Balclis within an hour of my sending them an email with a photo of the painting attached. The good news was that they knew Sobré’s work. The bad news was that, were I to put it up for auction, I’d be lucky to get €4.00! Ah well, the memories it conjures up are priceless.

GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY AS Tom Ford famously said, “People will stare, make it worth their while.” Something I remind myself of on a daily basis. This may sound vain, or contrived, but I am very aware that people stare at me. In fact, I imagine I’m not alone. Surely you’ve found yourself being watched, as you go about your business. For me, I began to notice it as a teenager, and it made me feel nervous. What were they looking at? Why was I receiving this attention? In my early 20’s, I became a well-known face within the media, so friends would often say that people were staring, as they recognised me. I wasn’t convinced. Travelling to Rome, New York, Paris, people still stared. After a while, I began to feel paranoid. It took a little longer to leave the house, as I found myself checking and rechecking, to ensure that I looked ‘normal.’ Eventually, I realised that no matter how I dress - be it a Gucci tuxe-

do, or simple sportswear, the eyes followed me. Some going as far as to point and tell their friends to turn and look. Yes, I’m over six-foot tall, with a mop of blonde hair, and, as it’s been noted, by certain journalists ‘permatanned.’ As if having a tan - real or fake, is something to be ashamed of. I guess I stand out for my general appearance, even on the streets of cosmopolitan Marbella, but I find myself attracting more attention due to how I dress. I have never been one to stare, or comment on the appearance of others. Don’t get me wrong, I look, I see, I think, ‘oh man, why did you wear that?’ But not once have I smirked, stared or commented. Why would I? It goes back to basic kindness. In fact, over the years I’ve done the opposite, and told complete strangers they look great, when they do. So as those people continue to stare, I continue to act as if I don’t see them, but I do. At a recent cocktail party, I was chatting with a pretty nondescript sort
of chap, who suddenly burst out laughing and drew attention to my choice of shoes - red suede loafers, by the aforementioned Tom Ford. “What were you thinking? How much did you pay for those things?” he almost passed out laughing. I paused a moment, before staring him in the eyes, “€2,000!” Suddenly his mood changed, as if the price tag instantly made the shoes more important than they were. I glanced at his footwear, to see scuffed, basic, square-toed black lace ups, with plastic soles. I smiled and walked away. The following morning as I dressed for breakfast, I decided to adapt a new mantra - dress up, show up, always and all ways. If they’re going to stare, what do I care? I shall act as if I can’t see them from behind my shades. So just imagine, if you’re staring at me, I may well be staring back at you, in horror!

A FOND FAREWELL DEAR Barry Duke, Thank you for writing the article ‘Heart breaking, the final farewell.’ I am in a similar situation with a rescue dog, as I do not know his true age. I have had him for six years and was told when I took him that he was ‘about five.’ He is about 80 per cent Labrador and suffers with his hips. He is on medication but finding it increasingly difficult to move far. I know I will have to decide soon when to have his life ended and reading your story has been a great help. We owe it to our canine companies to reward their faithfulness and constant friendship by giving them the dignity they deserve. I am a recent widow and also I feel too old to have another dog so this one is very special; although I have had many. I always read EWN and enjoy your input, keep up the good work. My partner and I travelled 12,000 miles and passed through Almeria airport to Madrid, we then flew to Heathrow for a flight to Bangkok, we were not tested in any of these airports either going or on our return? Your money or your life CORONAVIRUS is a threat to the global economy as well as to public health. The government must surely now extend the Brexit transition period and take a long-term approach to this crisis. Britain must agree with the EU to extend the Brexit transition period. Businesses and our communities will not cope with any more uncertainty during this outbreak. British companies who trade with the EU do not know what terms they’ll be trading on in less than a year. Add to this the disruption created by Coronavirus and it is reasonable to expect many businesses will not survive. Without decisive action, the government risks leaving us wholly unprepared Today, a large number of people are self-employed, part-time or on zero-hours contracts. That is why we need to think beyond the impact on employers and extend statutory sick pay to the self-employed and those who do not qualify from day one; otherwise many people will simply not be able to afford to self-isolate. This is a public health disaster waiting to happen. Something has to be done to ensure workers are not under pressure to turn up to work when sick, do not lose their jobs if they self-isolate, and receive the sick pay they are entitled to.

As the saying goes ‘Energy flows where our attention goes.’ The question is, where are you allowing your attention to go? In today’s society, it appears success is measured on status, wealth and fame. We become so trapped and focused on how we believe that working hard and making money means we will be successful but is that really the case? The answer is no! How many of you think success should be measured by happiness, health, being at peace with yourself and surrounded by love and passion? Don’t get me wrong, if your work is something that you truly enjoy and have a passion for then you are in a win,
win situation but if you’re not, then it will always feel like it’s a chore. Do not give up on yourself, please do not think that making a living is all that we are set out to do. There are things that you can do that will enable you to make a living whilst also making a life! You have the power of choice and you can start to live rather than exist! Firstly you have to understand that starting the change is going to be hard work. It is so easy to fall back into old habits as that is what you have trained your mind to believe. Once you accept that you need to be consistent and committed to the change, you will be on the right road. Here are a few steps to help you with your work/life balance: 1. Schedule one thing that you look forward to each day- This
could be anything from 15 minutes meditation, listening to your favourite song, creating a new plan. Whatever works for you!
2. Ask for support - Asking for support doesn’t mean you are weak; in fact it takes great strength. Delegation is the key to success. 3. Concentrate on one thing at a time - whilst it’s great to multitask, it’s also very exhausting. When you are working, work! When you have family time, focus purely on family time. 4. Set your priorities - Look at what you want your priorities to be, not what you think they should be. As yourself, If I could focus on one thing today, what would it be? Set that answer as your top priority then work on your second, third and so forth.

ness regime. Yoga Try to keep your stomach fairly empty before a yoga class, as flexibility and difficult positions are harder to achieve on a full belly. Make sure you are full of electrolytes, as this is what is most lost during a good sweat session. Coconut water is a good replenishing drink before yoga. Gazza as he’s known to his adoring fans, was his normal ‘daft as a brush’ character and full of spirit as he rested in the gorgeous weather currently on the Costa del Sol choosing only to sip on soft drinks for refreshment. The Euro Weekly News caught up with the iconic ex-footballer as he strolled past the Las Arenas hotel. THIS week’s dish could hardly be called a recipe. It’s really just chucking a few ingredients in a pan. The only skill involved is keeping an eye on the clams and serving as soon as they’re open. Leave too long and they will become tough. Although this tapas bar staple is very easy it looks impressive and will have your guests thinking you’re a master in the kitchen! Clams (almejas) are readily available on the fish counters of the local supermarkets. I paid €3.85 for a bag with enough to serve four decent sized tapas. So, not only tasty, but thrifty! In a pan that has a lid

over a low heat for about 10 minutes. While doing this rinse the clams in a colander
under cold running water… discard any that are open and refuse to shut when you tap them. Pat dry with a tea towel. Once the shallots are softened turn the heat up, put in some torn up serrano ham. After a minute add two crushed garlic cloves, after another 30 seconds put in the clams and a glass of dry sherry (a bottle of Fino sherry in the kitchen is very useful). Put the lid on. The clams will start to open after a couple of minutes. Check after three minutes to see if they’re all open. Scatter with finely chopped parsley. Enjoy with crusty bread!

Stuffed pork loin with feta and spinach - serves 6–8 Ingredients 2 lb boneless pork loin Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste ¼ cup olive oil 1 tsp diced red chilli (optional) 6 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 onion, finely chopped 8 cups baby spinach 3 oz feta cheese, crumbled 12 oz sliced bacon Method Slice pork loin lengthwise ¾ of the way through the middle. Lay open and season with salt and pepper. Heat oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Add chilli, garlic and onion and cook until golden. Add spinach and cook until wilted. Leave to cool, squeeze out excess water from spinach, and finely chop; transfer to a bowl. Stir in feta, salt, and pepper. Spread mixture evenly over the pork fold and wrap with bacon. This will keep the pork moist. You can chargrill on the BBQ or heat a grill set on 190° turning often for about 45 minutes and until bacon is crisp. You can serve with salad or new potatoes.

THE Aston Martin V12 Speedster has made its global debut this week. Created by luxury British marque’s bespoke customisation service ‘Q by Aston Martin,’ the Speedster draws inspiration from both the brand’s rich racing history and aeronautical design. Conceived a little over 12 months ago, it has undergone an intensive development programme, going from drawing board to production reality within that short period. Demonstrating the skills and meticulous planning of ‘Q by Aston Martin’ and Aston Martin Design, the V12 Speedster is a living show car, underlining the company’s commitment to delivering customers a stunning driver’s car, using the engineering ingenuity and advanced materials evident throughout the entire range. Powering the Speedster is a scintillating 5.2-litre, Twin-Turbo V12 engine, with a peak output of 700hp1 and 753Nm1 of torque. Front mid-mounted, the all-alloy, quadcam 48-valve engine is mated to a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission with a limited-slip differential driving the rear wheels.
The Aston is able to accelerate to 62mph (100km/h) in 3.5 seconds on the way to a limited top speed of 186mph (300km/h)1. The iconic V12 engine promises scintillating performance, but further underlining the abundant character and unparalleled commitment to a thrilling drive is an even more invigorating aural signature. To create this, Aston Martin’s engineers have created a bespoke stainless-steel exhaust system exiting centrally into the diffuser surface at the rear of the car for an even more rousing, characterful sound from the drivetrain. With the new model, every element of the drive is experiential, most obviously the removal of the windscreen adding to the visceral engagement, heightening the driving experience to new levels. Matt Becker, Aston Martin Chief Engineer, said: “for raw, driving thrills the V12 Speedster is unparalleled, the fully open element of the car adding a new dimension to the experience.
