4 break-ins POLICE arrested a 38-year-old suspected of breaking into four launderettes in Palma last month. They reported that the thief broke into establishments at night between February 9 and 27, using a crowbar and screwdriver to force open the self-service machine cash deposits.

Bike thief POLICE in Manacor arrested a 25-year-old Moroccan on suspicion of stealing a bicycle and trying to sell it on online for a sum below its actual value. The thief had got away with the bike after jumping over the terrace wall of the owner’s property.

A 42-YEAR-OLD German runner died while taking part in the Spartan Race Mallorca on Saturday after suffering a cardiac arrest, Spanish press reported. The emergency services did what they could to resuscitate the runner, but sadly were unable to save his life.

THE Mallorca firefighting service dealt with 5,754 incidents in 2019, 8.5 per cent more than in the previous year. Of these, 2,229 were fires, 1,015 rescues, 1,864 technical assistance and 646 prevention services. The service also went out to what turned out to be 1,253 false alarms.

THE coronavirus situation is under control on the Balearic Islands, according to the regional government. Speaking to press on Monday following the first Balearic inter-institutional meeting on coronavirus, the government president Francina Armengol said there is a situation of “containment,” pointing out the islands account for only 1 per cent of the cases in Spain. She did recognise however that there could be a significant impact on the island economy, and said her administration is working on that. Armengol underlined the need for “coordination,” and called on residents and institutions to act responsibly, but at the same gave out a message of “calm.” The Balearic president also took the opportunity to “congratulate” the islands’ health professionals “who work non-stop on the prevention and treatment of the virus.”

POLICE arrested a 61-year-old man for attempted robbery after he was caught trying to break open the metal shutter on a Palma business in the early hours of Saturday morning. A patrol went to investigate following a call to 091 alerting the authorities to the possible break-in in the Camp d’en Serralta neighbourhood. They came across the 61-year-old attempting to force the blind open. When the would-be thief realised the police had arrived he tried to get away in a 4x4, but officers got to him before the vehicle started off and detained him. They found metal cutters, a hammer, a chisel and gloves on the passenger seat. The officers also seized a screwdriver in a bag he was carrying. It transpired there was an outstanding arrest warrant for the man issued by a Palma court for breaking and entering.

Branson hotel RICHARD BRANSON’S plans to open an exclusive five-star hotel in Banyalbufar look to be moving forward. Spanish media reported that the latest version of the multi-millionaire business magnate’s hotel project has now got the nod from the Balearic Island Environment Commission. Branson wants to open a hotel with capacity for 58 guests on the 275hectare Son Bunyola estate, the main building dating back to 1880. According to reports the hotel will have 29 super luxury rooms and two swimming pools, while the conditions set out by the Environment Commission allow for necessary works to be carried out, as long as there are no enlargements or construction of new access roads to the property.

to June. Two of the hotel’s parking spaces will have

to be for emission-free vehicles and there should be two electric vehicle recharging points. In addition, invasive exotic plants species will have to be eliminated and the trees planted will have to be native species. Branson bought the space included in the Natura 2000 Network in 2015. The land is classified as rustic and as an Area of Special Interest. Until now the hotel project has not been able to move forward. The principal obstacle had been the fact the Son Bunyola main building and the defence tower have Cultural Interest classification.

Burglars cuffed FOUR men are under arrest on suspicion of breaking into eight homes in Son Servera, Porreres, Petra, Montuiri and Villafranca. The Guardia Civil reported one member of the gang would stay inside a vehicle to keep watch while the others forced open doors or windows to search for any cash, jewellery or drugs they could find in the properties. The authorities have managed to recover some of the stolen items and return them to their rightful owners.

Tree planting effort MORE than 100 people took part in a tree planting initiative at a Palma park on Saturday morning. Local residents and members of various associations rolled up their sleeves and got dug in alongside Palma mayor Jose Hila, Infrastructure and Accessibility councillor Angelica Pastor and Levante District councillor Daniel Oliveira to get 250 trees into the ground in the Krecovic park. This was the second day of planting in the park as part of an initiative which aims to plant 10,000 trees in the city altogether. Since last October the Parks and Gardens service has planted nearly 2,000 trees in different locations around Palma, including the Son Fuster football ground, the Orson Welles plaza, the seafront, and the Son Gibert, Isaac Albeniz Nuevo and the Ses Estacions parks.

Waterway clean-up PALMA Council has started on cleaning up the city’s waterways. The Infrastructure department has organised the removal of waste materials from a total of 26,000 metres of 10 waterways where they go through Palma for what Infrastructure councillor Angelica Pastor said were reasons of safety and environmental sustainability. The aim of the €170,000 investment the councillor said, is to ensure rubbish does not end up being pushed out to sea. The councillor explained that the cleanup works include some subterranean stretches which go under houses and buildings.

UK GOVERNMENT ALLOCATES £3 MILLION TO SUPPORT UK NATIONALS IN THE EU • CHARITIES and organisations that support UK nationals living in the EU have been awarded a share of the funding • The £3 million fund will assist UK nationals to apply to protect their residency rights • Residents in Spain, France, Germany, Cyprus, Italy, and several other EU countries will benefit Charities and organisations will receive government funding to provide practical support for UK nationals living in the EU with their residency applications. This includes potentially atrisk groups such as pensioners and disabled people. The organisations will each receive government funding to support those who may find it harder to complete all the paperwork required for residency applications. This includes pensioners, disabled people, those living in remote areas or who have mobility difficulties, and those who require help with language translation or interpretation. One of the beneficiaries of the fund

is Age in Spain - a charity that helps older British expatriates. They will be working across Cataluña and the Balearic Islands, while Asociación Babelia will be providing support in Alicante.

Now that the UK has left the EU, some UK nationals living in certain EU member states will need to take actions to secure their residency rights, so that they can continue to live and work in their host country as now.

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said: “These organisations are doing vital work to support UK Nationals in the EU and this funding will help secure their rights under the Withdrawal Agreement, so that they are given the security and stability they need.”

Over one million UK nationals live in EU and EFTA countries; more than 350,000 of them here in Spain. Charities and organisations based in Spain, who are receiving funding from the ‘UK Nationals Support Fund’ include: • Age in Spain • Asociación Babelia • International Organisation for Migration

British Ambassador to Spain Hugh Elliott said: “This fund will be a valuable complement to the extensive work that our consulates have been doing over the past three years to prepare UK nationals for our departure from the EU. The chosen organisations will be able to provide one-to-one, specialist support to those citizens that need it most; helping them to register as a resident and secure their rights under the Withdrawal Agreement.”

This extra assistance will build on the information and support that British Embassies are already providing.

Under the terms of the Withdrawal Agreement, UK nationals living in the EU at the end of the transition period can continue to live and work in their host country. Anyone who is legally residing in Spain by December 31, 2020 will be covered by the Withdrawal Agreement. As part of the ongoing information campaign, the government is encouraging all UK nationals in the EU to visit the Living in Guide on gov.uk for the country they live in and sign up for tailored alerts to receive the latest information about what actions they may need to take. URBAN ART WITH DESIGN: 10 artists will be chosen by the committee.

A New Approach THE proposal for the fourth edition of the Market Aftersun in Port Adriano aims at bringing fresh excitement to Mallorca by combining urban art with design, all with a Mediterranean twist and takes it one step further by using 20 shipping containers as an artistic canvas. Aftersun will act as a gallery for urban artists and from the total amount of containers 10 will be chosen as winners by a committee. The theme is free and can be presented by all visual artists, of legal age. Designs will be exhibited in the Aftersun De-

sign Market, which will take place from May 1 to 24, 2020. Each of the 10 artists selected by the committee,will receive €300 from the organisation as an endowment to cover the expenses. Fake copper A MAN who passed himself off as a Palma policeman and tried to get into the house of a woman who lives on her own in the early hours of the morning is under arrest. National Police detained the 40-year old on charges of impersonation of a public officer. According to reports the man fake copper presented himself at the woman’s home close to the island capital’s Ses Estacions Park and via the building video intercom system showed her what looked like a police badge. In fact, it turned out to be a photo of a police ID which he had on his mobile phone. Press also reported that he had appeared very edgy, saying over and over again there had been a situation of abuse. The woman got suspicious and decided to call 091 to check it out. There not being any report of officers operating in the area, the

091 centre decided to send out a patrol car. When the patrol arrived they found the man in the same street and proceeded to identify him. At that point a number of local residents informed the officer he had tried to get into their homes too, again trying the ruse of showing them the image of a police badge on his phone. Investigators discovered that the same individual tried something similar in a bar in Coll d'en Rabassa on February 19. On that occasion he was accompanied by another man and a woman, all of them wearing what looked like police badges on their chests. They reportedly went to a number of establishments, where they frisked customers, waiters and bar owners, pocketing any marijuana they found. The investigation remains open as police try to locate the other suspects.

AIM: Palma council hopes to keep the beach area calm and peaceful this holiday season

Drunken tourist PALMA city council is planning to step up controls to prevent drunken or excessive behaviour in the socalled ‘Dutch zone’ of the beach this holiday season. The city authority has approved the extension of the times for special surveillance of the area to between 1am and 8am, rather than starting at 5am. The declaration of this part of the coast as a zone of special tourist interest will be effective from Abril 1 to September 30. In the area identified as potentially attracting drunken tourism there will be a ban on allowing the consumption of alcohol outside establishments and businesses will be obliged to inform customers to have respect for local residents.

MALLORCA farmers took to the streets of Palma in tractors on S a t u rd a y t o d e m a n d fairer prices for their produce and to highlight the importance of the agriculture sector. Some 500 protestors and 250 tractors made their way through the centre of the city, going from Calle Manuel Azaña to the Borne and the government delegation offices where a manifesto detailing their claims was read out. They were received by Government Subdelegate Aina Calvo. The sub-delegate told them they could trust in her “collaboration” in transferring to Madrid farmers’ concerns about the aggravating factor of insularity in relation to costs.

What to do in the event of an emergency in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. In Spain there are in effect two groups which most people would understand as being ‘the police.’ The National Police (Policía Nacional) who have jurisdiction in the towns and cities and the Guardia Civil outside the towns and cities. The Local Police are employed by town halls; they basically deal with property found, and enforce local laws. Whilst they have a power of arrest, when exercised they must take the arrested person to the National Police or Guardia Civil according to where the crime took place. National Police and the Guardia Civil deal with all crimes, missing persons etc in their jurisdiction. The National Police also deal with all applications for immigration paperwork, NIEs, EU Citizens Registration and for non EU nationals, Residencia, etc. Throughput Europe the general number for all emergencies is 112. In Spain the operators speak English, French, German and Italian, in addition to Spanish and will liaise with the emergency services when the caller does not speak Spanish. No area code is needed and the number can be called from any phone, including mobiles even those without a Spanish SIM

card or any credit. You can also fax or SMS 112. The 24 hours national emergency numbers for Spanish speakers are: 091 police, 061 - health emergencies 080 firefighters. By calling 902 102 112, but only when the perpetrator is unknown, one can give details of certain crimes, including:- burglaries, car theft, theft or loss of documents or belongings. The service is available in English from 9am to 9pm seven days a week, and from 9am to 3pm in French, German and Italian. Having given details of the crime, you must go to the National Police station which you nominate, within 48 hours to make the report using the information supplied on the telephone. In the case of robbery, where threat or force has been used, victims should call 112 at the time for police attendance, or go directly to the police station which covers that area to make a report. Other useful number are:016, specifically to report instances of gender violence. For problems at sea, the Maritime Rescue Service (Salvamento Seguridad Maritmo) can be contacted by calling 900 202 202, and the Red Cross (Cruz Rojo) on 902 222 292. There is also a Red Cross 24-hour helpline 900 100 333.

Specsavers Launches Campaign SPECSAVERS Ópticas has launched a national fundraising campaign in aid of ONCE Foundation for Guide Dogs (FOPG), to help support vulnerable people with severe vision loss. Naming ONCE as its official charity, the opticians has pledged to raise more than €5,000 over the next year, to support the important work of the FOPG and the services it provides. The foundation runs the only centre which breeds and trains guide dogs for blind people, or those with serious vision loss, to help them gain better mobility and more independence. Jorge Martínez de Lizarduy Araico, of Specsavers Opticas, says: ‘As an opticians, we’re passionate about improving the lives of people with sight loss, so we’ll be doing all we can throughout the year to raise funds for the foundation. ‘Vision loss can be incredibly isolating, leading to feelings of loneliness and depression. However, thanks to the foundation and the work they do, people can gain a new sense of independence and confidence. ‘It’s equally important that people take a proactive approach to their eye health. tection, followed by timely intervention and management of eye health conditions, could help save your sight.’ Funds will be raised across the nine Specsavers Ópticas stores in Spain throughout 2020 in many different ways. The stores will also be sharing information with their customers about FOPG and the support they offer blind people in Spain, by providing more than 130 guide dogs to those in need each year. For her part, the Managing Director of FOPG, Maria Jesús Varela, highlighted the importance of this collaboration with Specsavers Ópticas, an international company committed to eye health, which is showing its support to those people who require the help of a guide dog to improve their mobility, by launching this fundraising campaign. She says it is an excellent example of corporate social responsibility in action and shows the way for many other

companies who want to support their communities and those less fortunate than themselves. For FOPG, the agreement is not only important in terms of fundraising to support their important work, but also the chance to shine a light on the service they are offering, the role of guide dogs and the importance of offering the same rights of access for all people in society. About FOPG Fundación ONCE del Perro Guía (FOPG) is a welfare foundation created by ONCE in 1990 with the purpose of breeding and training guide dogs for people with severe blindness or visual impairment. It provides its services to people with visual disabilities throughout Spain, by virtue of the collaboration with ONCE itself, which offers the guide dog as a free social service for people affiliated with that organisation who request it and are eligible. The FOPG is a permanent member of the International Guide Dog Federation (IGDF), the European Guide Dog Federation (EGDF) and the European Breed-

ing Network, a working group specialised in breeding and genetic improvement of guide dogs in Europe and the USA. The foundation breeds its own dogs and takes responsibility for the entire process of training the guide dog and pairing it with the most suitable applicant. They also train the new owner how to make best use of this mobility aid and supports both the owner and the dog throughout its life as a guide dog. The work of this foundation is essential to increase the autonomy of blind people or those with a serious visual disability. Changing from walking with a cane to doing it with a guide dog represents a huge improvement in their mobility, speed and security of their movements and allows them to integrate with society in a much more meaningful way. Crude Oil Prices Drop

RUSSIA has managed to catch the leaders of the oil exporting coun­ tries known as OPEC by complete surprise by refusing to cut oil pro­ duction by 1.5 million barrels a day. OPEC was looking to have huge cuts in order to keep prices high as demand has reduced due to the Coronavirus crisis, but crude prices dropped below $50 (€44) per barrel for the first time since 2017. It could be a Russian ploy but petrol and diesel prices at the pump should reduce for a while.

Flybe failure hits Ferrovial IT is not just travellers to Spain who will lose out by regional airline Flybe going into administration, but Span­ ish multinational group Ferrovial will also suffer financial losses by this decision. Whilst Administrators are trying to find buyers for either the entire Flybe business or liquidate its assets, all flights have been grounded and both passengers and its 2,400 staff have been ‘left in the air.’ Ferrovial some time ago entered into a joint venture with Australian financial group Macquarie to form a company known as AGS Airports

The two companies paid Heathrow Airport Holdings (which is itself owned 25 per cent by Fer­ rovial) more than £1 (€1.15) billion in 2014 to take over the manage­ ment of Aberdeen, Glasgow and Southampton airports. Although Flybe didn’t operate many flights out of Glasgow, in 2019 according to Cirium data, it account­ ed for 36 per cent of the capacity of Aberdeen airport and a huge 95 per cent of Southampton airport depar­

tures and arrivals with flights target­ ing Alicante, Malaga and Mallorca. These airports had already taken a hit with the loss of Thomas Cook airlines and traffic had fallen by nearly 8 per cent along with rev­ enue, so this latest news is not en­ couraging. At the end of 2019, AGS reported that it had debts of £693 (€796) mil­ lion and an operating profit of £94 (€108 million) so it is now impera­ tive that it tries to attract new air­ lines to Southampton in particular or there could be serious financial implications.

The ear­ lier EWN piece to which you refer pointed out that vot­ ing by e­mail does not meet this legal requirement. A vote is not the same as a proxy. Even if the community agrees to accept e­mail votes and no problems arise, they are not really legal.

Former partner in Prestige Mo­ tors, Italian Group Investindustrial has also signified its support for the sale of additional shares but there is even a potential knock on effect from the Coronavirus as currently China accounts for some 9 per cent of the vehicle manufacturer’s sales. It would appear that with all of this support that Aston Martin will be saved in the immediate future but it is recognised that it needs to invest significant amounts in updat­ ing machinery and launching at least one new model.

Elections just a ‘glitch’

WHAT the UK society truly needs to do is man up, or woman up, or ‘It’ up whatever is acceptable in this age of minority appeasing lunacy. I’m sure we are all in complete sympathy and utterly commiserate with the victims of the horrendous flooding that has occurred in the UK of late. However, early on in the crisis, would it really have helped the situation to have Boris and his entourage disrupting the whole emergency proceedings by sailing up the high street in the bows of a boat like some fortuitous figurehead - merely to appease some of the residents, who I’m sure actually had far better things to do than wring out their problems to someone who could do far more good directing emergency operations elsewhere? Personally I think the Prime Minister was quite correct to postpone his visit till more recently, when he was able to access the whole situation across the board. Having a political leader waste valuable time by physically visiting a disaster area to offer nothing more than a damp handshake is an utter nonproductive nonsense. I do of course not include moral lifting visits by Royalty in these situa-

tions. What about Civil servant Phillip Rutland? Last week this wimp resigned because he was being ‘bullied’ by Home Secretary Priti Patel. ‘Aw diddums.’ Apparently, among other things, she accused her whole department of being ‘F……g useless’! Well, in my experience of these Government civil servants, she’s probably not far wrong. This arrogant bunch of limp wristed egotists, actually do think they run the country - and in many cases they could be right. These shadowy public servants are immensely powerful and manipulative, and consequently suffer from delusions of grandeur that are quite extraordinary. If you wonder what these unelected lot actually do, I can refer you to the highly successful TV series ‘Yes Prime Minister.’ The two who attended the PM were civil

servants and the hysterically funny way they could manipulate their boss was actually not a long way from the truth. It also doesn’t matter what party is in power. Civil servants observe elections as a mere ‘glitch’ - a short period of disruption before they simply carry on in the ‘same ol’ ‘same ol’! One of

them did in fact gloatingly once inform me that many new MPs have no idea how to proceed and actually come to them for advice! What about that for - a very disturbing - arrogance? Well, all power to Ms Patel, who is also being accused of creating a ’climate of fear’ and apparently could ‘show unprovoked levels of aggression.’ Good, exactly what this bunch of unelected desk wallahs need. Time to learn that they are not in fact a government within a government, but servants of the people who were actually elected by constituents to run the country. So, if Preta Patel is wielding the whip, I for one wish all power to her elbow. Actually I’m surprised some of these disgruntled namby pambys don’t enjoy it! Ah well. FRANKLY SPEAKING I’M a British national living in an urbanisation on the Costa del Sol, and like in many other areas around here, there are a few wild boars about. They plod around, mainly at night, and are quite docile. I will admit, however, I was terrified when I first saw them. But after talking to my neighbours, I learned not to be afraid. They are only looking for food, and certainly aren’t here to harm us. They aren’t carnivores, but the Junta has now given hunters authorisation to cull them. And they gave the job to archers, how lovely! People are horrified, not only for the animals, but they have big concerns for the safety of people and pets. What if one got hit? It has happened before. Most people agree that hunting shouldn’t happen on urbanisations, and a recent petition to save a tamed family has gained almost 5,000 signatures, so far. People say Spanish are

cruel to animals. But, ironically, this is mainly the fault of the busy body expats in upmarket urbanisations. They’re the ones who’ve been moaning for months. Not because someone was hurt, but because their immaculate lawns get ruined. Aesthetics are clearly their priority. Or did they not realise the constant complaining would make authorities take drastic action?! For months, people have posted photos on social media with captions like ‘OMG someone is going to get hurt’ too. I’ve not heard of one person being attacked. But a man was shot dead by a stupid hunter only a few weeks ago.

He mistook him for a boar! As in most cases, humans end up being more dangerous than animals. Why can’t people work together as communities instead? They could take waste food from restaurants inland to tempt the animals back up. Instead it goes in the bin! Also, why can’t councils educate people? Give them practical advice? The boar only attack if they feel under attack. If people in Australia can live in har mony with their wildlife, why can’t we? We did move to their land after all. And we are the invaders, not them! But then, perhaps complaining is easier! We’re quick to criticise the Spanish when it comes to animal welfare. But we are part of the problem! Animals will now die a horrible slow death, all because people are too lazy to try and come up with a kind solution. The damage is done now though. Let’s just hope our kids don’t see the carnage.

In fact, somehow I blame social media and such for allowing me to believe that the relationship still had a future, or even a present. The world we inhabit today means we spend much time living online, rather than the real world. Lines become blurred, and when situations are bad, we search for any sign of light, in the endless late night text messages. Sadly, it transpired, I was searching for light, he was searching for guys to sleep with. Over time, more important plans were cancelled, always with sim-

now I was heading into the unkown. Having learned of my exe’s constant infidelities, I clearly now have trust issues. At lunch, my date sure was handsome, in fact more so than online. Tanned, fit, and showing an in-yourface sort of wealth and confidence. This made me nervous, only soon to be followed by bored. After telling me about his fabulous life and boasting about his watch, car, travel plans and... Sorry, I can’t recall, I’d zoned out by this point. Within minutes, he was asking if I would like to see some properties he was selling on the far side of Marbella. Before I could answer, an iPad was produced, complete with a video demonstration for each. This was a sales pitch, and I was trapped. I smiled as I viewed property after property, each one a ‘great investment opportunity.’ Once I explained that I already had a wonder ful home, he made some stupid excuse about his sister needing his help. Before I knew what was going on, he had gathered his things and exited sharply. As I sipped the wine, I realised that he had invited me to a lunch I didn’t really want, and subsequently landed me with the bill. This was a first, but what can you do, but laugh. And order more wine.

COGNITIVE BEHAVIOURAL THERAPY, HOW IT HELPS rent situation such as, I will be happy when if I am slimmer, I will be happy with more money, I will be happy in a different job. Do these statements ring true to any of you? This may surprise you but richer people are not always happier, slimmer people are not always happier and neither are those who have more money. In fact, physical and material objects have no impact on how happy it makes an individual. So what is the difference? It all comes down to perspective or thoughts in our own situations! There is an over used expression that is used yet is extremely important and actually gets to the heart of CBT. Is your glass half full or half empty? This is the difference between happy and unhappy people. The glass of water is seen as the person’s situation or their life’s circumstances. We tend to think that by filling the glass with materialistic objects such as a new job, a new house or more money will sufficiently fill the glass but physical objects actually have no impact at all. It is all about the

thoughts, feelings and behaviours you have. Here is an example by Dr Michael Sinclair to give you a full understanding of how this works. Two friends, Emma and Sarah both have job interviews on the same day. Emma is feeling very nervous and can feel her heart in her throat. In contrast Sarah whilst slightly nervous, is actually a little excited. Although she is aware of the unusual feeling in her chest, she refers to it as butterflies rather than the pounding of her heart. These two women are in identical situations but are experiencing very different physical and emotional reactions. This is down to one fundamental difference... THEIR PERSPECTIVE! Whether one is more qualified than the other is irrelevant, as is all of the external factors. It all comes down to how we view the situation. CBT refers to two core aspects of psychology; 1. Thinking Cognition refers to all of our thoughts, which include memories, images and

words etc. Everything that goes through our heads fall into this category. 2. Action Behaviour refers to whatever we are doing with our body at any particular moment. Quite often, when people ask what we are doing, we respond with ‘nothing’. This is actually impossible! We are ALWAYS doing something, even sitting down staring out of the window is considered an action. Here is an exercise for all of my wonderful readers. Sit in a quiet comfortable place with no distractions. Answer the following questions without too much thought. 1. How would you like to feel? 2. What do you like best about yourself? 3. What changes are you willing to make? 4. How do you feel physically? 5. How do you feel emotionally? 6. How do you behave? 7. Can you see the connection between the last three questions?

Hair type, care type NOW there’s no universally correct answer for ‘How often should I wash my hair?’ because ever y single scalp and hair type is unique. So even though you’ve probably heard that it’s best to wash your hair as infrequently as possible, that may not exactly be true. Your ultra-fine, grease-prone hair won’t follow the same rules as someone with combination curls because depending on your hair type, not washing your hair enough can cause dandruff, irritation and even hair loss. Also, washing too frequently can lead to stripped, straw-like hair

and scalp inflammation. So, although it’ll still require some testing to figure out how often to wash your hair, here is a basic starting frequency for some hair types to help you wash your hair with less stress. Fine hair shows grease and oil more than other hair types do. It may be tempting to shampoo every day, but you’ll just end up stripping your hair and potentially leading to even more oil. Instead, wash your hair every other day with a gentle, volumising formula and blast your roots with dry shampoo to curb day-two grease. Thick, dense hair follicles tend to disguise oil better than thinner hair, which

means that if your hair isn’t very oily, try to wash it only once or twice a week. If you’re prone to buildup or itchiness, try a shampoo filled with the pore-clearing and inflammation-zapping tea tree oil to will your roots clean without feeling stripped. Waves and looser curls can get weighed down by the butters and oils in curl-specific shampoos, especially if your hair is fine. To keep them voluminous and defined - without the straw-like dryness - wash every other day or every two days (with a sulfatefree cleanser that’s formulated with lightweight moisturisers. When you damage your hair it roughs up the cuticles, leaving your strands dry, dull, and brittle. To help counteract the damage, try sulphate-free, coloursafe shampoo that uses plant-based proteins and lightweight oils to gently cleanse and hydrate. Then, once a week, douse your hair in a treatment that uses keratin to repair the broken bonds in your fried hair.

If you can laugh at the matter; you gain the power to control bipolar rather than let it control you, which automatically makes you feel better. Don’t get me wrong, a mental illness is not a joking matter but it can be a laughing matter. When we laugh, our brain is stimulated, we take ourselves less seriously and we are better equipped to overcome future challenges. Part of my recovery is lear ning to look back and laugh at past situations. There was this one time, I had gone for a routine check-up with my psychiatrist, and Dad was waiting outside in the car. I had been quiet all the

way there, appointments always made me very angsty and Drs running late would only make my anxiety worse! The Doctor called me in, I told her how I was feeling at the time, no alterations to my medication this time -wohooo!! I came out and got in the car, and Dad asked me “How did it go, still a fruit loop?” To w h i c h w e b o t h l a u g h e d a t all the way home. Being able to laugh at yourself can have such a positive effect on your mental health, knowing from experience it can make life a little easier and a little brighter. The only times I take offence at someone joking about mental illness, or generally anything, is when it’s disrespectful. Other than that, it’s healing and the best therapy. Laughing can tur n a negative experience into a positive one. It’s also contagious, so reach out and try and make someone laugh! I hate bipolar - it’s awesome! HIGH PRAISE DEAR Euro Weekly, Yesterday I read the first piece by your new columnist Miss Bipolar and I have to say thank you so very much. As a long-term sufferer of depression and anxiety it really made a difference to my day reading about somebody here in Spain who has similar feelings and how they cope. She wrote about things that are constantly on my mind and made me feel at ease and took a little bit of weight off my shoulders that day. As a Brit abroad, I often find it hard to discuss my feelings with health care professionals here as my Spanish is not perfect and some things can be lost in translation, important things. A while back, I contacted the Race and Equality Board or whatever they now call themselves? The cost of free speech FREEDOM of expression is facing an unprecedented threat in the UK. The government published its latest plans for new laws against ‘online harms’ in February 2020. The proposals are set to be a disaster for freedom of expression and privacy online that would make the internet an aggressively monitored, controlled speech zone. Speech that is lawful offline will be regulated online, stifling free expression and influencing online censorship internationally. Online speech regulations inscribe limitations on the everyday communications of billions of people. Government has designed the plans not only to deal with crime online, but to explicitly target lawful speech. Internet and social media companies are the public squares or the town criers of the modern day. They allow people to communicate, politically organise, expose corruption and build new communities on a scale never seen before. Social media platforms are censoring views and deleting accounts haphazardly, often in response to political tides rather than rule breaches, effectively playing judge and jury with our rights.

Affleck hones Spanish skills RUMOUR has it that Hollywood superstar Ben Affleck is heading back to school to polish up on his Spanish after realising his 14-year-old daughter, Violet, has a better command of the language. The Batman star perfected his Spanish skills while living and working as a child actor in Mexico and has always taken pride in being able to help her with her homework - until recently. “She’s right at the point where I think she might be passing me,” he said during a recent TV appearance. “I was like, ‘Nope, this is not happening! Belgian beer stew I WAS doing some research into Belgian bar food (as you do!) and as well as the moules-frites, I found a very appealing dish called Carbonnades Flamandes. It’s a slow cooked stew of large chunks of stewing beef braised in Belgian Trappist dark beer. After successfully getting the butcher to cut me some large chunks of stewing beef I had more trouble obtaining the Trappist beer. In the end I settled for Guinness. So my Belgian dish had become a Belgian / Irish affair. Marinate the beef in the beer along with four crushed garlic cloves and a couple of bay leaves for 24 hours. When ready to cook take the beef out of the marinade and pat dry

with some kitchen towel. Dust with some seasoned flour and brown in some olive oil in a deep pan. Remove the beef and set to one side. Fry some lardons of pancetta in the same pan (add a little more oil if necessary) and then remove with a slotted spoon and put with the beef. Add chopped onion, carrots and leek. Soften for a few minutes then pour in the marinade through a sieve. Top up with about 300ml of beef stock. Stir in a couple of squeezes of tomato puree, some thyme and stir. Bring to a boil then turn down to a low simmer and leave for two or three hours. It’s done when the beef is completely tender. Scatter with fresh parsley. Enjoy.

BARRY DUKE FOR the last few years I’ve been receiving spam emails contain links to all manner of ‘miracle’ cures. But since the outbreak of the Coronavirus, ads exhorting me to buy stuff ‘guaranteed’ to protect me from the pandemic have arrived in droves. These go straight into the trash folder, but this week one seized my attention. It was for Silver Solution which ‘works faster, longer and more efficiently than other silvers to support your immune system.’ For a ‘donation’ of just $200 I would get 12 16-ounce bottles and protection from the virus. Years ago, health authorities in the US began warning of the dangers of ingesting colloidal silver, and last month, Ed Cara, writing for the Gizmodo website, said ‘there’s absolutely no evidence that taking colloidal silver will keep you safe from the new Coronavirus, nor ‘boost’ your immune system. I certainly didn’t until I read the following on the UK Science Museum website: ‘The

word ‘quack’ comes from the old Dutch word quacksalver - ‘one who quacks (boasts) about the virtue of his salves.’ Medical professionals regularly used the word ‘quack’ to discredit anyone whom they disagreed with, especially unqualified healers. But a genuine ‘quack’ is someone who sells medicine for treatment while knowing that it doesn’t work. At this point I have to confess to having once been conned by a

quack who briefly ran newspaper ads for a ‘miracle’ hair growth lotion. After spotting one of these ads, I went along to a grubby office in central Johannesburg where I met a woman who, in exchange for the equivalent of around £100, handed me a bottle of gunk to smear on a bald patch that appeared when I was in my early 20s. I was to rub the stuff into my scalp every night, and put on a shower cap. After the first application, I experienced a burning sensation that became so painful I rushed to the shower to wash it off. To my horror, clumps of hair fell out, along with strips of skin. I legged it back to the woman’s office the next day to complain, but it was shuttered and she’d done a runner. To add insult to injury when I reported the matter to the police, a copper chuckled and said, ‘there’s one born every day.’ He pointed at his bald head and declared ‘learn to live with it. I did.’

MARCEL SABITZER was at the double as a pair of Hugo Lloris errors condemned Tottenham to defeat at RB Leipzig and a Champions League exit. Tottenham’s hopes of repeating last season’s run to the Champions League final came to an end as RB Leipzig eased into the quarter-finals with a 3-0 second-leg win. Spurs could be considered fortunate to only lose 1-0 in the first leg in London after being outplayed by the Bundesliga title chasers and Jose Mourinho’s men were very much on the back foot again at Red Bull Arena. A comeback akin to Tottenham’s incredible turnaround in the semi-final against Ajax in Amsterdam last term was never on the cards, with captain Hugo Lloris enduring a nightmare evening as Leipzig skipper Marcel Sabitzer scored twice. Lloris made contact with each of Sabitzer’s efforts but failed to keep them out, Leipzig’s last-eight place booked in routine fashion as Spurs limped to a 4-0 aggregate defeat sealed by substitute Emil Forsberg’s late goal. Tottenham’s task became a more arduous one in the 10th minute as, after Timo Werner’s initial shot was blocked, the forward laid the ball off for Sabitzer, whose well-struck effort

On his return from injury, Vardy double marked his first strikes since December, and he wasn’t the only one in rampant mood as Harvey Barnes also registered twice for Brendan Rodgers’ side. Leicester City were wasteful in the first half-hour as the Foxes wasted free headers on three occasions, but with half time approaching, Barnes finally made Villa pay. The visiting defence had looked shaky and it was then compounded by Pepe Reina’s rash decision. He came charging out, Barnes nicked the ball around him before slotting into the empty net. That's how it stayed at the interval and it was one-way traffic thereafter. It was just a matter of time before Leicester got their second of the night. It came from a familiar source. VAR reviewed the referee’s original decision, Tyrone Mings was adjudged to have handled Barnes’ cross and Vardy confidently dispatched the resulting penalty. But the Foxes weren’t done there,

Vardy smashed in his second with just over 10 minutes remaining before Barnes helped himself to another after tidy work from Marc Albrighton. The key talking point was the return of Jamie Vardy. He was on the pitch a matter of minutes before he had the per fect opportunity to end his goal drought. Stepping up to the spot, the ex-England striker dispatched his penalty to register his first goal of 2020. It wasn’t the penalty of a man who had been drawing blanks recently, coolly put away, Vardy was back and he could smell blood. Sure enough, having waited 644 minutes for a goal, the Leicester hitman bagged another 17 minutes later to well and truly put his doubters to bed. A smartly taken goal, the forward rode a couple of challenges before smashing the ball past Reina at the near post. It was a welcome sight for Foxes fans who were left exasperated by Kelechi Iheaneacho during the first hour as the Nigerian yet again flattered to deceive. Tottenham may have been without Kane and Son, but there was fallibility elsewhere on the pitch that was laid bare as Leipzig ran riot on the counter-attack. The hosts could have won by a greater margin and Tottenham now face an uphill battle to contest next season’s Champions League. They are seven points behind fourth-placed Chelsea with nine Premier League games to play. Leipzig signed Angelino on loan from Manchester City in January and that move is looking ever more astute. Angelino ran Serge Aurier ragged down the left and had a hand in two goals. Lloris has previously received criticism for making too many errors for a goalkeeper of his ability and reputation, and he can expect to come under scrutiny again after his mistakes allowed Sabitzer to put the tie beyond Tottenham.
