TAKING A STAND
COSTA ALMERIA took a firm stand to mark International Women’s Day. All over the province there were events and actions leading up to and on the actual day itself on Sunday March 8 to celebrate women and their contribution to society, but also to call for greater rights and gender equality. In Huercal-Overa women, and men, of all ages turned out for the March for Equality on Sunday. It was a similar story in Vera, where locals hiked from the Plaza Mayor to the Espiritu Santo hill in a show of solidarity with the gender equality cause. In Almeria City some 5,000 people took to the streets waving placards with clear anti-inequality messages for a Coordinadora Movimiento Feminista de Almeria-organised protest. “We’re not princesses, we’re warriors,” the marchers declared. On the same day in the provincial capital, a record 1,700 runners took part in the Race of the Women under the banner ‘today and every day, equality is our goal.’

Under the slogan ‘On equality, not one step back,’ Cuevas del Almanzora Council was just one
of the many local authorities and institutions commemorating International Women’s Day with the
reading out of a manifesto. “Fighting for equality” and “empowering women in all areas of society must
be a priority objective on political agendas at all levels,” argued Equality councillor Melchora Caparros. They were sentiments echoed by Almeria City mayor Ramon FernandezPacheco. He called for “true equality” and “a fairer society” in an act at the City Hall during which he presented recognitions to eight women from different fields of Almerian society for being an example of the fight for equality. Fernandez-Pacheco said men and women need to advance together “to continue reaching goals, overcoming obsta-
cles and breaking glass ceilings. “There will be no true equality while men and women do not have the same opportunities in access to the labour market, while they earn less for the same job, while female unemployment is greater than masculine, while women have higher rates of temporary employment or while they continue to die at the hands of their partners or ex-partners.” See page 5 to find out how EWN marked International Women’s Day with the Dames in Spain (Mojacar).

POOR PUP: The Guardia Civil issued a reminder to the public to report any suspected cases of animal abuse.

did not have the relevant health card for their animal. Nor had it been micro-chipped or registered on the council census. The Guardia said the owner had violated the 2003 Andalucia Animal Protection law. The Guardia also asked the public to report any suspected cases of animal abuse.
ROCK FALL THE section of the N-340 coast road between Aguadulce and Almeria City which has been closed to traffic since a nearly four-tonne rock crashed down onto the highway on New Year’s Eve started reopening intermittently to traffic on Friday. The stretch of the ‘El Cañarete,’ as the road is more commonly known, was immediately cut off to vehicles in both directions following the giant rock incident and the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda is currently carrying out repair works so it can be safely reopened. Last week the Sub-delegate of the Government in Almeria, Manuel de la Fuente, announced the first phase of the repairs has now been completed, and the second phase is due to start. CUT OFF: The road has been closed to traffic since a giant rock crashed down on New Year’s Eve. month would be possible, now that rocks have been cleared from the roadside embankment it can be opened at certain times to traffic. Vehicles are allowed to use the road from 7pm on Fridays to 9am on Mondays. It is closed off again to traffic from 9am to 7pm Monday to Friday while the works are being carried out, and open again at the weekends without restrictions. In the second phase of the nearly €640,000 road
repair project holes will be created in the embankment and steel cables will be introduced plus a cement filling to keep them in place with a view to ensuring large rocks remain anchored. In the third phase antilandslide barriers will be installed to intercept any rocks which do come down and a ‘curtain guide’ to prevent falling rocks away from the barriers. The job is expected to be completed by mid-May.

Siberia triumph GARRUCHA resident Carlos Garcia has become the first ever Spaniard to walk alone across Lake Baikal in Siberia. The 672-kilometre arduous trek took him 14 days and seven hours, during which he suffered the beginnings of frostbite in nine fingers, Spanish press reported.

Pay gap ALMERIA has the lowest gender pay gap in Andalucia. The average provincial annual salary for men is €15,488, 14.1 per cent more than the typical salary for women of €13,258, according to a Comisiones Obreras report. The Andalucia average is 23.1 cent higher earnings for men.
Least elderly ALMERIA has the lowest percentage of elderly relative to youngsters of any province in Andalucia. Figures from the Andalucia Institute of Statistics and Cartography put the proportion in Almeria at 88 over-65’s for every 100 under15’s, compared to a regional average of 105.08 per cent.

45-48 HEALTH & PROMOTION: The provincial government wants to boost Almeria as a holiday destination among European markets. THE provincial government’s tourism service has launched a competition to find a company to take charge of a campaign aimed at luring more than 100,000 visitors from 11 European countries. The campaign will run from May to November and is aimed at breaking the seasonal nature of tourism in the province and at consolidating markets in the UK, Scandinavia, Iceland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, the Netherlands
and Portugal. This is the Diputacion de Almeria’s eighth European initiative of this kind to increase visitor numbers and extend the tourism season. Among the conditions for the company chosen this time are that each visitor’s stay should be for a minimum of five nights. The company will have have to organise excursions, routes and guided visits around the province with a view to tourists visiting different areas. There will also be promotional ac-
FUGITIVE ARREST A ROMANIAN facing a prison sentence in the UK for causing an accident in Staffordshire which left a driver seriously injured has been arrested in El Ejido. The British authorities issued a European arrest warrant for 32-year-old Romanian MA on February 15. The document registered with INTERPOL Central National Offices orders his detention and return to the UK to serve five years behind bars for dangerous driving which put the lives of others at risk in relation to an incident in December 2018. He is accused of driving the wrong way down a street and colliding head-on with another vehicle. The driver of the second car suffered internal bleeding, bowel rupture and a broken knee and breastbone. A police patrol detained the fugitive earlier this month in the hours of the morning when he was driving on Calle Manuel Fernandez Arriola.

Jobless drop
UNEMPLOYMENT in Almeria has dipped over the last year. Government figures reveal there were 1,595 less people registered as out of work in provincial Public Service Employment offices in February than in the same month of 2019. This represented a 2.76 per cent decrease and put the jobless total at 56,111. Unemployment in the province last month was also down on January, by 152 people, or 0.27 per cent. The number of men out of work fell by 185 between the first month of the year and February, while the number of women looking for employment went up by 33; 56 per cent of Almeria’s jobless are women. By sector, the biggest drop was in services (-163), followed by agriculture and fishing (-72), construction (-42), and industry (-19). Of the total 23,452 work contracts formalised in February, 2,372 were indefinite, representing 10.1 per cent of the total.

Fostering appeal THE Almeria Red Cross took the provincial ‘Mojate’ child fostering campaign to Adra this week. The humanitarian organisation set up a marquee at the entrance to the town hall in order to raise awareness about the campaign. The aim is to get the 22 new foster families Almeria needs “with the idea of being able to offer a temporary home to boys and girls of different ages who are staying in reception centres,” explained programme expert Maria Leticia Cabello. She said the aim was to provide the children with “a normal life, like any other child,” and for them to receive “all the care and affection they need while their personal situations are being sorted out.” Visiting the Red Cross marquee with several other council members, Adra mayor Manuel Cortes pledged to publicise the fostering campaign and to help “in every possible way so that no child lacks the warmth of a home.”

AIM: The idea is to provide children staying in reception centres with a normal life and for the care and affection they need. He called on Adra residents and Almerians in general to get informed about the campaign and “to help the Red Cross in any way possible to find these 22 foster families they are looking for.” Foster families take children temporarily into their homes to avoid youngsters separated from their parents under difficult circumstances from being stuck in reception centres until matters improve. During the children’s stay the families have the support of a specialised team.
Fostering is seen as an alternative form of care as laid out in the Infancy Protection System based on public solidarity, which allows children taken away from their parents for one reason or another to be in a stable family environment. SAD FIND: Equinac said it was possible the dolphin had been unable to keep up with its pod.
A DEAD dolphin with a broken jaw washed up on a beach in the Cabo de Gata natural park last week. The Andalucia 112 emergency service alerted the Equinac marine life rescue association after a young man contacted the authorities about the sad find.
Equinac said the creature was extremely thin with clear signs of weakness. The association put forward the theory it had been unable to keep up with its pod, the signs indicating it had an interaction with a group of bottlenosed dolphins.

Canteen coming HUERCAL-OVERA’S Virgen del Rio infant and primary school will have a canteen starting from the next school year. The local council reported the service will be possible thanks to its commitment to the Junta de Andalucia Education department to adapt the necessary infrastructure. The municipal authority said it had been working with the Education department on getting the canteen up and running since the beginning of the legislature given that providing the service was a request from the school’s parents’ association. The council included the proposal in a July report for the Junta department’s Almeria delegation on the municipality’s education centre needs, and in January the local administration informed the delegation of its commitment to the infrastructure works to allow for a canteen in the Virgen del Rio, and also in the Tierno Galvan school. The council pledged it would include the works to be carried out in accordance with APAE Andalucia Education Agency’s criteria in this year’s municipal budget. The idea is for the local authority to do the works over the summer. Huercal-Overa mayor Francisca Lourdes Fernandez said her administration would be meeting parents’ demands in its contribution to the provision of a service which allows for a family and work life balance, “even though it is not an obligatory responsibility for the council.” The mayor also revealed that the 2020 municipal budget will allocate significantly more to municipal school conservation and maintenance than the €14,000 last year. She further said the council has told the regional government’s Education department that providing a canteen for the Tierno Galvan and Principe Felipe schools is an urgent need.

EWN was proud to be invited to the special Dames in Spain (Mojacar) lunch at the Lua restaurant in Vera Playa alongside fellow guests Mojacar mayor Rosemari Cano and councillor Maria Luisa Perez to celebrate sisterhood and women’s achievements and contribution to society. Dames Chairman Carol Threlfall welcomed the ladies by noting the origins of International Women’s Day go back over a century and continue to go from strength to strength, as demonstrated by the number of women attending the lunch. As well as superb food and great company, guest speaker singer Ellen Turner, who performs under the name ‘Lady Ellen,’ gave a very personal insight into her ‘life in a man’s world’ and how she stood up for what she wanted to do. In a particularly moving moment Ellen gave a special thank you to all her women friends for

UK GOVERNMENT ALLOCATES £3 MILLION TO SUPPORT UK NATIONALS IN THE EU • CHARITIES and organisations that support UK nationals living in the EU have been awarded a share of the funding • The £3 million fund will assist UK nationals to apply to protect their residency rights • Residents in Spain, France, Germany, Cyprus, Italy, and several other EU countries will benefit Charities and organisations will receive government funding to provide practical support for UK nationals living in the EU with their residency applications. This includes potentially atrisk groups such as pensioners and disabled people. The organisations will each receive government funding to support those who may find it harder to complete all the paperwork required for residency applications. This includes pensioners, disabled people, those living in remote areas or who have mobility difficulties, and those who require help with language translation or interpretation. One of the beneficiaries of the fund
is Age in Spain - a charity that helps older British expatriates. They will be working across Cataluña and the Balearic Islands, while Asociación Babelia will be providing support in Alicante.
Now that the UK has left the EU, some UK nationals living in certain EU member states will need to take actions to secure their residency rights, so that they can continue to live and work in their host country as now.
Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said: “These organisations are doing vital work to support UK Nationals in the EU and this funding will help secure their rights under the Withdrawal Agreement, so that they are given the security and stability they need.”
Over one million UK nationals live in EU and EFTA countries; more than 350,000 of them here in Spain. Charities and organisations based in Spain, who are receiving funding from the ‘UK Nationals Support Fund’ include: • Age in Spain • Asociación Babelia • International Organisation for Migration
British Ambassador to Spain Hugh Elliott said: “This fund will be a valuable complement to the extensive work that our consulates have been doing over the past three years to prepare UK nationals for our departure from the EU. The chosen organisations will be able to provide one-to-one, specialist support to those citizens that need it most; helping them to register as a resident and secure their rights under the Withdrawal Agreement.”
This extra assistance will build on the information and support that British Embassies are already providing.
Under the terms of the Withdrawal Agreement, UK nationals living in the EU at the end of the transition period can continue to live and work in their host country. Anyone who is legally residing in Spain by December 31, 2020 will be covered by the Withdrawal Agreement. As part of the ongoing information campaign, the government is encouraging all UK nationals in the EU to visit the Living in Guide on gov.uk for the country they live in and sign up for tailored alerts to receive the latest information about what actions they may need to take. Record turnout A RECORD number of El Bandido Runners met on the Mojacar seafront promenade on Saturday to celebrate International Women’s Day. There were 70 runners, joggers and walkers covering the five kilometres, along with several dogs! This broke the group’s previous turnout record of 43 on New Year’s Day. A collection after the run raised €45 for PAWS-PATAS animal charity, the cause currently benefiting from the voluntary donations made at the weekly runs. Saturday’s meet was a ‘reverse’ run, starting at
the Red Cross roundabout end of the promenade followed by post-run refreshments at a local cafe. Ultimately, El Bandido Runners would like to gain official ‘parkrun’ status; at the moment there are no parkruns in Spain. El Bandido Runners is a local group, set up by Ironman Kevin Rowe in June 2018. It started with a small number of regulars and has grown with runners, joggers and walkers, some permanent residents, other regular visitors and holidaymakers, covering the five-kilometre prom. The group welcomes all
ages, nationalities and speeds. Anyone interested in joining can go along on Wednesday and/or Saturday at 9am from October to April and at 8am from May to September. The meeting point is opposite the Best Indalo Hotel, apart from on the first Saturday of each month when they meet at the Red Cross roundabout to be nearer to the monthly post-run breakfast cafe. AMATEUR dramatics company Shoestring Productions is currently in rehearsals for the fourth play in the Hotel la Resistance series. Titled ‘The Meeting That Never Was,’ writer Jim Grey has surpassed himself with this latest farce. It will be staged over the evenings of April 2, 3, 4 and 5 at a Mojacar Playa restaurant, the profits from all the performances going to local PAWS-PATAS animal charity. Hunter well rescue THE emergency services went to the rescue of a 42-year-old hunter after he fell down a 20-metre deep well in the Gador mountains in Laujar de Andarax early on Saturday morning. Guardia Civil, Poniente service firefighters, a health emergency team, Local Police and Laujar Civil Protection rushed to the location in the Paraje Caparidan area following an alert called through to 112 just after 7am. Despite his injuries the 42-yearold had managed to clamber up a few metres, but was exhausted and on the point of falling, the Guardia reported. The rescue team managed to

Computer helping hand A CHARITABLE workshop in Albox is giving a helping hand to local worthy causes. PIRdA, which is run by several members of the Albox Computing Cub, offers repaired and upgraded donated computers free of charge to charities and non-profit organisations. The workshop operates on Monday and Wednesday mornings. A small team give up their time to work on the donated computers and other equipment so they can serve a useful purpose for deserving causes. Naturally they are always keen to take any old IT equipment people no longer want off their hands. They also welcome assistance from anyone who

CURRENTLY Britain benefits considerably from membership of the EU Erasmus+ exchange group which sees students from the UK spend time in European universities and vice versa and it seems that there are no concrete plans in the Brexit negotiations to extend membership after withdrawal. Currently it costs Britain around £200 (€230) million annually to belong to the scheme, but it is estimated that EU students who come to the UK spend £430 (€495) million on living expenses alone. Some 85 per cent of all British colleges and universities are currently ALWAYS ready to re-invent himself, now that the Brexit Party has become something of a successful ‘one trick pony,’ it appears that Nigel Farage will be moving on to create the Reform Party. ‘Plastic beating’ explained AS part of its work with Costa Almeria bars, restaurants and other local businesses to help reduce their environmental impact and ‘be part of the solution not the pollution,’ Coastal Cleaners Andalu-
cia (CAA), will be staging a meeting later this month about its ‘plastic beating’ scheme. Now in its second year, the CCA Approved Venue Award scheme provides a checklist of 10 ideas and
practices, including returnable glass water bottles, finger bowls not wet wipes, bunting and reusable decorations rather than balloons, and separating packaging for recycling. Venues achieving seven out of 10 and above are awarded Approved Venue status and are presented with a logo to display for the year to promote their commitment to greener practices. Handbag thief copped A MIDDLE-AGED handbag thief targeting women in bars and re s t a u r a n t s i n A l m e r i a C i t y h a s been copped. Police said the 57-year-old had pinched the bags from a seafront bar, two eateries in the Torrecardenas shopping centre and an establishment in the Cortijo Grande district. She honed in on bags slung over the back of chairs, or in one case placed in a child’s pram. Taking advantage of the victims’ attention being elsewhere, she would discreetly take the bag, hide it under her jacket and walk out. In all she got her
hands on more than €800 in cash, a mobile phone and other items of value. Reports to the police about the incidents all described the suspected robber as a thin woman with brown hair worn in a bun, and always wearing sunglasses. Police arrested the suspected robber five days after the first reported theft. Officers also recovered some of the stolen personal documents and belongings. Identified as PPP, it turned out the 57year-old has a lengthy criminal record; she had been arrested on no less than 41 previous occasions.

Road resurfacing works going well RESURFACING works on the Añorica road connecting Huercal-Overa districts San Francisco and Las Norias are going well. Mayor Francisca Lourdes Fernandez and Public Works Services councillor Jose Lopez have been to take a look for themselves. The mayor said the improvements will benefit local residents and farmers, “facilitating traffic flow and improving road safety.” The project is being financed by a subsidy from the Junta de Andalucia’s Agriculture, Farming, Fishing and Sustainable De-
velopment department, with support from the European Rural Development Fund, the local authority contributing 40 per cent of the €150,000 cost. Fernandez promised the council will “continue working on future projects which cover residents’ demands in regard to improvements in the municipal road network.” She also made the point Huercal-Overa is a large municipality with nearly 30 outlying districts, and that “actions are gradually being taken so that all residents have the same services, wherever they live.”

THE central government has boosted the budget for the Food Assistance Programme for people at risk of social exclusion in Almeria by 23 per cent to nearly €3.5 million. Government Sub-delegate in Almeria Manuel de la Fuente said the increase “confirms the Spanish government’s particular sensitivity to the most vulnerable.” The food programme is a European Commission initiative dating back to the 1980s. The aim is not just to supply food to the needy, but also to promote cohesion and contribute to the social and labour inclusion of the people who receive the help. QUESTION OVER HOTEL DEMOLITION THE Junta de Andalucia is looking at how to go about demolishing the El Algarrobico hotel standing on a beach in Carboneras, the Finance, Industry and Energy regional minister Juan Bravo told press during a trip to Brussels last week. According to Bravo the regional government is “working to see” how to carry out and fund the cost of the demolition operation and actions for the environmental recovery of the zone. “There is a sentence which will have to be tackled,” he commented, while admitting that the issue is a “problem,” but one which the administration inherited. He pointed out the cost of the demolition will be high, and will have to be met by the Junta, but also repeated the administration’s commitment to try and return the beach to its natural state. The El Algarrobico is located within the border of the Cabo de Gata National park.

Mayor Francisca Lourdes Fernandez, along with Social Well-being councillor Maria del Mar Meca, Virgen del Rio president Mariana Jimenez, and FAAM Almeria Disabled Persons Association Federation president Isabel Valdes, did the honours of officially inaugurating the facilities, which have been provided by the local council. The mayor highlighted the important work of the association in the municipality since 1982 in assisting the disabled and on “integration and inclusion at all levels.” Fernandez said the new facilities provided the association with a decent,

200sqm space includes an administration area and a large multi-uses hall. First set up 28 years ago, the Virgen del Rio Association for the Disabled began as an initiative set up by a small group of people with a disability, prompted by the demands and problems for this group of society. They believed there was a need to channel these demands through a legal framework, with a platform to defend their interests, so they set up an entity for people in Huercal-Overa and its outlying areas. The aim was to contribute to integration in all areas, including the workplace, social and cultural, and to improving disabled persons’ quality of life. Today the association has more than 360 members.

Landmark works WORKS are now underway to create a pedestrian walkway for Almeria City’s iconic ‘Cable Ingles’ mineral loading platform. The early 20th century landmark is undergoing a major €2.2 million restoration. Works have already been carried out to reinforce and protect the metal structure. The project will see the Cable Ingles opened up to the public next year with a raised walkway connected it to the Parque de la Estacion and the old railway station, and turning it into a viewing point offering outstanding views of the provincial capital and the bay. Almeria Port Authority President Jesus Caicedo said he is confident the Cable Ingles “will finally open up to the public for their use and enjoyment in spring 2021, and will become one of the best viewing points in Almeria.”
Pensioner trapped in snow GUARDIA CIVIL had to go to the rescue of a 75-yearold motorist who walked for 20 kilometres in freezing temperatures after his vehicle got stuck on a forest road covered in snow and ice in Calar Alto. It was the pensioner’s
son who alerted the Guardia that his father had disappeared between Calar Alto and Bacares. He reported that his dad did not have a mobile phone with him, but that a passing hiker had got in touch to let him know the
vehicle was trapped in an area known as Paraje Venta Luisa. They said they had lent the elderly driver their mobile so he could call a tow truck. Guardia officers set about combing the area to try and locate the 75year-old. It proved heavy going, given that the amount of accumulated snow and ice had made pretty much all roads impassable. The conditions made the officers extremely doubtful a tow truck would have been able to get through, and the hypothesis the pensioner would have set off on foot to try and get help. It took the Guardia two hours to find the car, which was completely stuck in the snow. A short time later they finally came across the motorist, by this time in quite a state and with symptoms of hypothermia having tramped for miles in the icy conditions.

Award for dig work THE second Valparaiso Foundation CH Study Scholarship has been awarded to student Noelia Aguado for her study and research on ceramic remains found at the site of the original Mojacar settlement, ‘Mojacar La Vieja.’ The award ceremony took place at the foundation’s Mojacar centre, which was attended by local Tourism councillor and dig project promoter Emmanuel Agüero, Project Director and professor of History and Medieval Archaeology at Granada University, Jose Maria Martin Civantos, and his colleague Julio Roman, a researcher at the Medieval History and Historiographic Technical Sciences Department. It is under the direction of these academics that Noelia will continue her studies at Granada’s Medieval History Department. Foundation President Beatrice Beckett, accompanied by members Chispa Lopez Casas and Javier Almagro, presented Noelia with her scholarship. The foundation’s purpose is to support cultural creation and research and, through the CH Scholarships and collaboration agreements with Mojacar Council and the Granada University, it has given Noelia €3,600 to assist with her postgraduate studies. The archaeological investigations into the old Mojacar began in 2018 thanks to the local authority’s promotion of the initia-

Granada University’s MEMOLAB Biocultural Archaeology Laboratory has an expert excavation team with new information technology, teaching and analysis methods and an extensive international network to share their findings. Given the dimensions and potential of the site, following the first two excavation campaigns the meticulous investigation, dating and cataloguing of the ceramic materials found is needed. Hence the team of archaeologists required a postgraduate graduate student under the supervision of Dr Roman, which they now have. On the day of the award, the project director led a guided visit of the site, during which he revealed the latest findings stemming from the university’s work over recent months. It was also an opportunity for the Valparaiso Foundation Board, councillor Agüero and the university excavations directors to put together new work strategies for this year’s Mojacar la Vieja campaign and plans for the future in view of the great relevance of the remains found. The studies so far, and the possible new discoveries yet to be unearthed, could be key in understanding an important period of Almeria Province’s history.

LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. In Spain there are in effect two groups which most people would understand as being ‘the police.’ The National Police (Policía Nacional) who have jurisdiction in the towns and cities and the Guardia Civil outside the towns and cities. The Local Police are employed by town halls; they basically deal with property found, and enforce local laws. Whilst they have a power of arrest, when exercised they must take the arrested person to the National Police or Guardia Civil according to where the crime took place. National Police and the Guardia Civil deal with all crimes, missing persons etc in their jurisdiction. The National Police also deal with all applications for immigration paperwork, NIEs, EU Citizens Registration and for non EU nationals, Residencia, etc. Throughput Europe the general number for all emergencies is 112. In Spain the operators speak English, French, German and Italian, in addition to Spanish and will liaise with the emergency services when the caller does not speak Spanish. No area code is needed and the number can be called from any phone, including mobiles even those without a Spanish SIM
card or any credit. You can also fax or SMS 112. The 24 hours national emergency numbers for Spanish speakers are: 091 police, 061 - health emergencies 080 firefighters. By calling 902 102 112, but only when the perpetrator is unknown, one can give details of certain crimes, including:- burglaries, car theft, theft or loss of documents or belongings. The service is available in English from 9am to 9pm seven days a week, and from 9am to 3pm in French, German and Italian. Having given details of the crime, you must go to the National Police station which you nominate, within 48 hours to make the report using the information supplied on the telephone. In the case of robbery, where threat or force has been used, victims should call 112 at the time for police attendance, or go directly to the police station which covers that area to make a report. Other useful number are:016, specifically to report instances of gender violence. For problems at sea, the Maritime Rescue Service (Salvamento Seguridad Maritmo) can be contacted by calling 900 202 202, and the Red Cross (Cruz Rojo) on 902 222 292. There is also a Red Cross 24-hour helpline 900 100 333.

ADRA is gearing up for what will be the 13th edition of its ‘Urban R a c e ’ t h ro u g h t h e streets of the town. Participants in the event on Sunday March 22 have the choice of running in the 10-kilometre main race or doing the five-kilometre option. There will also be a race for young runners aged up to 15, which is free to enter. The Pago del Lugar seafront promenade will be the start and finishing line, the race getting going at 10am. “One of the maxims of this government team is to develop sport among local residents, and this event is the perfect occasion to practise sport as a family,” commented Adra mayor Manuel Cortes at the race presentation. RUSSIA has managed to catch the leaders of the oil exporting coun tries known as OPEC by complete surprise by refusing to cut oil pro duction by 1.5 million barrels a day. OPEC was looking to have huge cuts in order to keep prices high as demand has reduced due to the Coronavirus crisis, but crude prices dropped below $50 (€44) per barrel for the first time since 2017. It could be a Russian ploy but petrol and diesel prices at the pump should reduce for a while.

Whilst Administrators are trying to find buyers for either the entire Flybe business or liquidate its assets, all flights have been grounded and both passengers and its 2,400 staff have been ‘left in the air.’ Ferrovial some time ago entered into a joint venture with Australian financial group Macquarie to form a company known as AGS Airports

The two companies paid Heathrow Airport Holdings (which is itself owned 25 per cent by Fer rovial) more than £1 (€1.15) billion in 2014 to take over the manage ment of Aberdeen, Glasgow and Southampton airports. Although Flybe didn’t operate many flights out of Glasgow, in 2019 according to Cirium data, it account ed for 36 per cent of the capacity of Aberdeen airport and a huge 95 per cent of Southampton airport depar
tures and arrivals with flights target ing Alicante, Malaga and Mallorca. These airports had already taken a hit with the loss of Thomas Cook airlines and traffic had fallen by nearly 8 per cent along with rev enue, so this latest news is not en couraging. At the end of 2019, AGS reported that it had debts of £693 (€796) mil lion and an operating profit of £94 (€108 million) so it is now impera tive that it tries to attract new air lines to Southampton in particular or there could be serious financial implications.

Former partner in Prestige Mo tors, Italian Group Investindustrial has also signified its support for the sale of additional shares but there is even a potential knock on effect from the Coronavirus as currently China accounts for some 9 per cent of the vehicle manufacturer’s sales. It would appear that with all of this support that Aston Martin will be saved in the immediate future but it is recognised that it needs to invest significant amounts in updat ing machinery and launching at least one new model.

Elections just a ‘glitch’
WHAT the UK society truly needs to do is man up, or woman up, or ‘It’ up whatever is acceptable in this age of minority appeasing lunacy. I’m sure we are all in complete sympathy and utterly commiserate with the victims of the horrendous flooding that has occurred in the UK of late. However, early on in the crisis, would it really have helped the situation to have Boris and his entourage disrupting the whole emergency proceedings by sailing up the high street in the bows of a boat like some fortuitous figurehead - merely to appease some of the residents, who I’m sure actually had far better things to do than wring out their problems to someone who could do far more good directing emergency operations elsewhere? Personally I think the Prime Minister was quite correct to postpone his visit till more recently, when he was able to access the whole situation across the board. Having a political leader waste valuable time by physically visiting a disaster area to offer nothing more than a damp handshake is an utter nonproductive nonsense. I do of course not include moral lifting visits by Royalty in these situa-
tions. What about Civil servant Phillip Rutland? Last week this wimp resigned because he was being ‘bullied’ by Home Secretary Priti Patel. ‘Aw diddums.’ Apparently, among other things, she accused her whole department of being ‘F……g useless’! Well, in my experience of these Government civil servants, she’s probably not far wrong. This arrogant bunch of limp wristed egotists, actually do think they run the country - and in many cases they could be right. These shadowy public servants are immensely powerful and manipulative, and consequently suffer from delusions of grandeur that are quite extraordinary. If you wonder what these unelected lot actually do, I can refer you to the highly successful TV series ‘Yes Prime Minister.’ The two who attended the PM were civil

servants and the hysterically funny way they could manipulate their boss was actually not a long way from the truth. It also doesn’t matter what party is in power. Civil servants observe elections as a mere ‘glitch’ - a short period of disruption before they simply carry on in the ‘same ol’ ‘same ol’! One of
them did in fact gloatingly once inform me that many new MPs have no idea how to proceed and actually come to them for advice! What about that for - a very disturbing - arrogance? Well, all power to Ms Patel, who is also being accused of creating a ’climate of fear’ and apparently could ‘show unprovoked levels of aggression.’ Good, exactly what this bunch of unelected desk wallahs need. Time to learn that they are not in fact a government within a government, but servants of the people who were actually elected by constituents to run the country. So, if Preta Patel is wielding the whip, I for one wish all power to her elbow. Actually I’m surprised some of these disgruntled namby pambys don’t enjoy it! Ah well. GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY AT midnight on New Year’s Eve, I found myself very much single. After months of realising that the relationship was over, the Eureka moment hit me. Having been asked to spend New Year’s Eve with one special person, only to have plans cancelled last minute, was all I needed to finally wake up. I’d listened to so many excuses and lies for too long. Myself and my ex, who is based in Italy, had drifted far apart. In fact, somehow I blame social media and such for allowing me to believe that the relationship still had a future, or even a present. The world we inhabit today means we spend much time living online, rather than the real world. Lines become blurred, and when situations are bad, we search for any sign of light, in the endless late night text messages. Sadly, it transpired, I was searching for light, he was searching for guys to sleep with. Over time, more important plans were cancelled, always with sim-

now I was heading into the unkown. Having learned of my exe’s constant infidelities, I clearly now have trust issues. At lunch, my date sure was handsome, in fact more so than online. Tanned, fit, and showing an in-yourface sort of wealth and confidence. This made me nervous, only soon to be followed by bored. After telling me about his fabulous life and boasting about his watch, car, travel plans and... Sorry, I can’t recall, I’d zoned out by this point. Within minutes, he was asking if I would like to see some properties he was selling on the far side of Marbella. Before I could answer, an iPad was produced, complete with a video demonstration for each. This was a sales pitch, and I was trapped. I smiled as I viewed property after property, each one a ‘great investment opportunity.’ Once I explained that I already had a wonder ful home, he made some stupid excuse about his sister needing his help. Before I knew what was going on, he had gathered his things and exited sharply. As I sipped the wine, I realised that he had invited me to a lunch I didn’t really want, and subsequently landed me with the bill. This was a first, but what can you do, but laugh. And order more wine.

Let’s sing happy birthday twice! MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man

FRANKLY SPEAKING I’M a British national living in an urbanisation on the Costa del Sol, and like in many other areas around here, there are a few wild boars about. They plod around, mainly at night, and are quite docile. I will admit, however, I was terrified when I first saw them. But after talking to my neighbours, I learned not to be afraid. They are only looking for food, and certainly aren’t here to harm us. They aren’t carnivores, but the Junta has now given hunters authorisation to cull them. And they gave the job to archers, how lovely! People are horrified, not only for the animals, but they have big concerns for the safety of people and pets. What if one got hit? It has happened before. Most people agree that hunting shouldn’t happen on urbanisations, and a recent petition to save a tamed family has gained almost 5,000 signatures, so far. People say Spanish are

cruel to animals. But, ironically, this is mainly the fault of the busy body expats in upmarket urbanisations. They’re the ones who’ve been moaning for months. Not because someone was hurt, but because their immaculate lawns get ruined. Aesthetics are clearly their priority. Or did they not realise the constant complaining would make authorities take drastic action?! For months, people have posted photos on social media with captions like ‘OMG someone is going to get hurt’ too. I’ve not heard of one person being attacked. But a man was shot dead by a stupid hunter only a few weeks ago.
He mistook him for a boar! As in most cases, humans end up being more dangerous than animals. Why can’t people work together as communities instead? They could take waste food from restaurants inland to tempt the animals back up. Instead it goes in the bin! Also, why can’t councils educate people? Give them practical advice? The boar only attack if they feel under attack. If people in Australia can live in har mony with their wildlife, why can’t we? We did move to their land after all. And we are the invaders, not them! But then, perhaps complaining is easier! We’re quick to criticise the Spanish when it comes to animal welfare. But we are part of the problem! Animals will now die a horrible slow death, all because people are too lazy to try and come up with a kind solution. The damage is done now though. Let’s just hope our kids don’t see the carnage.
WELL if you haven’t already noticed there is a new virus called 2019 novel coronavirus, or 2019-nCoV. It is, of course, very serious and obviously there are lots of things being said about what precautions one should take so as not to catch it. The problem is that there is also a ridiculous amount of misinformation too. So, where should you turn for the latest information on a minute by minute changing situation? We know there’s a lot of useful and reliable information online, but there’s also a lot of rubbish, so which is which. Firstly read the stuff issued by the WHO - not the rock band - the World Health Organisation and other accredited medical sources. Definitely not the red tops or other gutter press. Just as the number of people and countries affected by this new virus has spread, so have conspiracy theories and unfounded claims about it. Already social media sites, including Facebook,
Twitter, YouTube, and Tik Tok, have seen a number of false and misleading posts about the virus. This is what causes the panic - people stockpiling food and supplies. Then there are the con merchants who are trying to sell ‘non-medical immune boosters’ which are totally useless. There is always some that want to profit out of misery and vulnerable people. I don’t know how the virus started. The conspiracy theorists say it’s man-made which, of course, is possible. All I know is apart from the damage it can do to people; the damage to businesses is really going to be catastrophic. Movie premieres, flights, meetings, shows and concerts are all being cancelled. The Chinese Grand Prix has been postponed and sporting events cancelled. I’ve seen people in Spain wearing face masks which, if it’s just a regular surgical face mask doesn’t help at all. What I’m saying is panic can be more dangerous than anything else. I am now going to wash my hands. Even that advice has contradictions. I read somewhere you have to do it whilst singing happy birthday twice but somewhere else said sing God Save the Queen. I’m sticking to happy birthday as I don’t know all of God Save the Queen.

I can think of four names that stand out from the rest. Alphabetically they are Beethoven, Einstein, Leonardo and Shakespeare. We forget that Einstein was more than the most brilliant
mathematician and physician. He was also a spiritualist, philosopher and humorist. He declared: “Only two things are infinite; the universe and human stupidity. And I’m not sure about the former.” He had deep insights into human nature and, with his understanding of the reality of time and space, he expounded on Henri Bergson’s theories of time.
The other three are artists. Beethoven and Shakespeare are frequently compared with each other as each took his art form to its summit. This is not merely because of their understanding of the human spirit and human thought, but also with their ability to express it. They each presented it in sublime language, while providing enduring entertainment. Beethoven transmits human emotions such as love, despair and joy through the Violin Romances, Fuer Elise and the Ninth. One of the ‘minor’ symphonies, the Sixth (Pastoral), depicts the countryside so that a blind person can see and enjoy it. The listener can picture the landscape on arrival, imagine the fresh babbling brook and share the gratitude of the shepherds after surviving the storm. Each listener will have a different perception, different images.
Shakespeare created living characters in numerous different periods and settings, showing the effect on them of tragedy, comedy, romance and history. All of us can identify with the insanity and suffering of King Lear and the torment of Othello, for example. Leonardo died 500 years ago. He excelled in most of what he attempted. There are arguably greater renaissance and classical painters, but he is right up there. And he was much more. He was inventor, engineer, scientist, mathematician, anatomist, musician and poet. In a pre-industrial and pre-technological age his inventions foresaw the motor car, air travel, the machine gun, the armoured tank, the suspension bridge and the robot. As he knew that, one day, we should be enjoying air travel as he invented the parachute! His genius is surely the greatest in human history.

HIGH PRAISE DEAR Euro Weekly, Yesterday I read the first piece by your new columnist Miss Bipolar and I have to say thank you so very much. As a long-term sufferer of depression and anxiety it really made a difference to my day reading about somebody here in Spain who has similar feelings and how they cope. She wrote about things that are constantly on my mind and made me feel at ease and took a little bit of weight off my shoulders that day. As a Brit abroad, I often find it hard to discuss my feelings with health care professionals here as my Spanish is not perfect and some things can be lost in translation, important things. The cost of free speech FREEDOM of expression is facing an unprecedented threat in the UK. The government published its latest plans for new laws against ‘online harms’ in February 2020. The proposals are set to be a disaster for freedom of expression and privacy online that would make the internet an aggressively monitored, controlled speech zone. Speech that is lawful offline will be regulated online, stifling free expression and influencing online censorship internationally. Online speech regulations inscribe limitations on the everyday communications of billions of people. Government has designed the plans not only to deal with crime online, but to explicitly target lawful speech. Internet and social media companies are the public squares or the town criers of the modern day. They allow people to communicate, politically organise, expose corruption and build new communities on a scale never seen before. Social media platforms are censoring views and deleting accounts haphazardly, often in response to political tides rather than rule breaches, effectively playing judge and jury with our rights.

Yes I would say there are enough indicators to take precau tions, mind you if China and US solve their trade deal and if Corona gets contained two of the big three will be gone, that leaves Iran. This may surprise you but richer people are not always happier, slimmer people are not always happier and neither are those who have more money. In fact, physical and material objects have no impact on how happy it makes an individual. So what is the difference? It all comes down to perspective or thoughts in our own situations! There is an over used expression that is used yet is extremely important and actually gets to the heart of CBT. Is your glass half full or half empty? This is the difference between happy and unhappy people. The glass of water is seen as the person’s situation or their life’s circumstances. We tend to think that by filling the glass with materialistic objects such as a new job, a new house or more money will sufficiently fill the glass but physical objects actually have no impact at all. It is all about the thoughts, feelings and be-
haviours you have. Here is an example by Dr Michael Sinclair to give you a full understanding of how this works. Two friends, Emma and Sarah both have job interviews on the same day. Emma is feeling very nervous and can feel her heart in her throat. In contrast Sarah whilst slightly nervous, is actually a little excited. Although she is aware of the unusual feeling in her chest, she refers to it as butterflies rather than the pounding of her heart. These two women are in identical situations but are experiencing very different physical and emotional reactions. This is down to one fundamental difference... THEIR PERSPECTIVE! Whether one is more qualified than the other is irrelevant, as is all of the external factors. It all comes down to how we view the situation. CBT refers to two core aspects of psychology; 1. Thinking Cognition refers to all of our thoughts, which include memories, images and words etc. Everything that goes through
our heads fall into this category. 2. Action Behaviour refers to whatever we are doing with our body at any particular moment. Quite often, when people ask what we are doing, we respond with ‘nothing’. This is actually impossible! We are ALWAYS doing something, even sitting down staring out of the window is considered an action. Here is an exercise for all of my wonderful readers. Sit in a quiet comfortable place with no distractions. Answer the following questions without too much thought. 1. How would you like to feel? 2. What do you like best about yourself? 3. What changes are you willing to make? 4. How do you feel physically? 5. How do you feel emotionally? 6. How do you behave? 7. Can you see the connection between the last three questions?

So even though you’ve probably heard that it’s best to wash your hair as infrequently as possible, that may not exactly be true. Your ultra-fine, greaseprone hair won’t follow the same rules as someone with combination curls because depending on your hair type, not washing your hair enough can cause dandruff, irritation and even hair loss. Also, washing too frequently can lead to stripped, straw-like hair and scalp inflammation. So, although it’ll still require some testing to figure out how often to wash your hair, here is a basic starting fre-
quency for some hair types to help you wash your hair with less stress. Fine hair shows grease and oil more than other hair types do. It may be tempting to shampoo every day, but you’ll just end up stripping your hair and potentially leading to even more oil. Instead, wash your hair every other day with a gentle, volumising formula and blast your roots with dry shampoo to curb day-two grease. Thick, dense hair follicles tend to disguise oil better than thinner hair, which means that if your hair isn’t very oily, try to wash it only once or twice a week. If you’re prone to buildup or itchiness, try a shampoo filled with the pore-clearing and inflammation-zapping tea tree oil to will your roots clean without feeling stripped.

It can be used as a healthy defence tactic to master an unpleasant situation... If you can laugh at the matter; you gain the power to control bipolar rather than let it control you, which automatically makes you feel better. Don’t get me wrong, a mental illness is not a joking matter but it can be a laughing matter. When we laugh, our brain is stimulated, we take ourselves less seriously and we are better equipped to overcome future challenges. Part of my recovery is learning to look back and laugh at past situations. There was this one time, I had gone for a routine check-up with my psychiatrist, and Dad was waiting outside in the car. I had been quiet all the way there, appointments always made me very angsty and Drs running late would only make my anxiety worse! The Doctor called me in, I told her how I
was feeling at the time, no alterations to my medication this time wohooo!! I came out and got in the car, and Dad asked me “How did it go, still a fruit loop?” To which we both laughed at all the way home. Being able to laugh at yourself can have such a positive effect on your mental health, knowing from experience it can make life a little easier and a little brighter. The only times I take offence at someone joking about mental illness, or generally anything, is when it’s disrespectful. Other than that, it’s healing and the best therapy. Laughing can turn a negative experience into a positive one. It’s also contagious, so reach out and try and make someone laugh! I hate bipolar - it’s awesome! Committed couple SPANISH actress and model, Elsa Pataky and her husband, Australian actor Chris Hemsworth, have always been very environmentally conscious. So, it comes as no surprise that the couple feels very strongly about recent fires that ravaged the land where they live with their three children, Australia. The couple’s commitment to helping with the cause is so strong that they have donated almost a million euros to help different organisations. Such as the NSW Rural Fire Service, County Fire Service in South Australia and to the County Fire Authority in the State of Victoria. “We have a position that allows us to contribute to

Affleck hones Spanish skills RUMOUR has it that Hollywood superstar Ben Affleck is heading back to school to polish up on his Spanish after realising his 14-year-old daughter, Violet, has a better command of the language. The Batman star perfected his Spanish skills while living and working as a child actor in Mexico and has always taken pride in being able to help her with her homework - until recently. “She’s right at the point where I think she might be passing me,” he said during a recent TV appearance. “I was like, ‘Nope, this is not happening! Rock on to Queen A SPECTACULAR new show will be bringing the rocking sounds of Queen’s greatest hits to Roquetas de Mar later this month. Belgian beer stew I WAS doing some research into Belgian bar food (as you do!) and as well as the moules-frites, I found a very appealing dish called Carbonnades Flamandes. It’s a slow cooked stew of large chunks of stewing beef braised in Belgian Trappist dark beer. After successfully getting the butcher to cut me some large chunks of stewing beef I had more trouble obtaining the Trappist beer. In the end I settled for Guinness. So my Belgian dish had now become a Belgian / Irish affair. Marinate the beef in the beer along with four
APPEALING: A slow cooked beef stew using dark beer. crushed garlic cloves and a couple of bay leaves for 24 hours. When ready to cook take the beef out of the
marinade and pat dry with some kitchen towel. Dust with some seasoned flour and brown in some olive oil in a deep
pan. Remove the beef and set to one side. Fry some lardons of pancetta in the same pan (add a little more oil if necessary) and then remove with a slotted spoon and put with the beef. Add chopped onion, carrots and leek. Soften for a few minutes then pour in the marinade through a sieve. Top up with about 300ml of beef stock. Stir in a couple of squeezes of tomato puree, some thyme and stir. Bring to a boil then turn down to a low simmer and leave for two or three hours. It’s done when the beef is completely tender. Scatter with fresh parsley. Enjoy.

Cultural spring THERE is a spring of culture in Albox as this year’s national and international arts festival gets underway. Between now and the end of May there are a series of classical music, poetry and theatre competitions and performances as part of ‘Albox-Primavera 2020,’ which over the last 50 years has grown to become one of the most important annual cultural events in the Almanzora Valley The festival got underway on Saturday with the first event, the National Chamber Music Competition. Musicians from all over Spain playing different kinds of instruments offered a free concert at the Federico Garcia Lorca hall. On the evening of Saturday March 21 the Federico Garcia Lorca hall will be the venue for the National Recital Competition, in which more than 40 participants have registered to take part. Again the event is free to the public. The following Saturday March 28 there is the sixth international competition of ‘Lied’ (poetry set to classical music) and concert song. Sopranos, mezzosopranos, tenors, counter tenors and baritones will be performing accompanied by a pianist. The gala for the 19th edition of the Martin Garcia Ramos International Young Poetry competition will be staged on the evening of Saturday April 25 at the Agua y Salud municipal centre. The judges have to decide on the best from more than 200 original and unpublished poems from Spanish-speaking countries around the world. The poet of the winning poem will will €6,000 and have their work published. The competition is considered one of the most important for under-30’s in the Spanish-speaking world. In the second fortnight of May, the festival focus will be on theatre for the 50th anniversary of the National Amateur Dramatics competition. The best theatre companies in Spain will be chosen from among more than 50 taking part.

Fun walk fundraiser for MACS charity THE Piedra Amarilla Walkers and Talkers group is holding a fun walk to raise funds for Mojacar Area Cancer Support (MACS). The event is billed as an easy, level nine-kilometre walk from La Hoya to Cantoria, which is dog, wheelchair and buggy friendly, and open to all. There will be a refreshment stop along the way. The group asks everyone taking part to dress in pink, ‘the zanier the better,’ dogs included.
There will be fun prizes for the best or worst dressed people and pooches. There will also be a raffle to win a whole host of cleaning products, all pink, and all donated by members of the group. Entry is €3 per person, all of which goes to MACS. The walk will take place on Thursday April 2, meeting at Lorena’s Bar, Piedra Amarilla, and setting off at 1pm. FINES will host the 21st edition of the Music Band Provincial Festival, Diputacion de Almeria, Culture and Cinema deputy Manuel Guzman has announced. The event will take place this summer, and will, the deputy said, make the municipality the “epicentre of municipal music.” Guzman made the announcement during a recent visit to Fines to inaugurate a new 300sqm base for the local Music Band Cultural Association’s meetings and rehearsals and a 600sqm multi-purpose space. The projects were carried out under the PFEA Rural Employment Development Plan with a €155,000 investment, creating 1,283 working days for Fines residents. The deputy referred to the provincial government-managed plan as “an effective tool for the

A new legend is born
THE Alfa Romeo brand renews its myth with a retur n to its origins, resurrecting one of the legends of motor racing and a milestone in its history: the Giulia GTA. BMW has revealed the Concept i4 an allelectric saloon, which previews the German brand’s forthcoming i4 rival for the Tesla Model 3 due to enter production in 2021. Underneath, the Concept i4 (and the upcoming production-ready i4) shares its body-in-white with the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe. A handful of styling tweaks, such as a larger radiator grille, updated headlamps, a tweaked rear end and a range of blue styling elements feature, in a bid to distance this electric saloon from BMW’s conventionally powered line-up. BMW has also fitted a range of aerodynamically conscious design revisions, such as a set of widespoked alloy wheels and blanked-off ducting for the front bumper. The lowered side skirts also conceal the battery pack, while the reworked rear diffuser masks the space that would normally be occupied by an exhaust system. Arsenal started with Eddie Nketiah as a lone striker but his secondhalf replacement Alexandre Lacazette scored the winner against West Ham. CABRERA Lawn Bowls Club dominated the podium places at the recent Barry Woods Open Mixed Pairs competition, which it also hosted. As the title of the competition suggests it is open to all other clubs to enter. The competition was played on a round-robin basis with two groups of 10 teams. Each team played nine matches over the weekend and the winners of each group played in the final. Each match was over eight ends and played against a timer. Three points were awarded for a win, one point for a draw and also a point for every end won.

and Janet making them the winners. Barry Woods, a founder member of Cabrera, who was for many years club president, sponsored the competition. Cabrera LBC put out a big thank you to all the organisers and spectators who made this event the great success it was. The weather also played an important part as it was absolutely fabulous.

Mojacar Bowls’ 6th anniversary MOJACAR Bowls Club celebrated its sixth anniversary on Friday with a ‘friendly’ competition against other clubs. The Mojacar club was joined at its green at the Hotel Servigroup Marina Playa by teams from Zurgena and Indalo Bowling: in all there were 18 teams of three players. For the first time ever both teams in the final were from Mojacar BC. Izzy McKay, Donnie Rosie and Chris Gill emerged the winners, and were presented with the trophy by Servigroup Hotel Marina Mar Sub Director, Marta Astilleros. Tony Freeman, Graham Downing and Hazel Pearson were the runners-up. This means that for only the second time since its inception, the trophy will be kept at Mojacar Bowls club.
