ALMERIA (at the time of going to press) has its first case of Coronavirus, the Junta de Andalucia Health Department confirmed. The news broke last Friday that a 28-year-old architect who lives in Milan and who had decided to return to his home in Almeria had been admitted to the Mediterraneo Hospital in the provincial capital after being diagnosed with the virus. He went to the hospital’s emergencies department on Tuesday when he started a cough and experienced muscular pains in his neck. It was decided he should stay at home under active monitoring and return if the symptoms got worse or he started running a fever. By the Wednesday he had a temperature. He went back to

Coronavirus confirmed the hospital and was tested for Coronavirus. The following day the result came back positive and he was put into isolation. The Junta Health department reported the young man was making a steady recovery and by Sunday afternoon he had been allowed to return home. He told Spanish press on Saturday he had nothing worse than cold-like symptoms and had had just one day of a high temperature “I think it is important to avoid alarm and stay calm,” he commented. “At all times I have had very minor symptoms, I’m absolutely

fine. This is not ebola,” he added The architect described the situation in Milan as “chaotic” and said it had even been difficult to find food in supermarkets. Originally he had planned to selfquarantine in his flat in the Italian city, but in the end decided to come back to Almeria as at that time he had not experienced any symptoms of the virus. “I took all possible precautions, although I could not buy a mask as just like in Spain they had sold out,” he said. “I tried to not have contact with anyone and I constantly washed my hands.” He told press he believed he could have picked up the virus

Action on mozzies ACTION aimed at preventing the proliferation of mosquitos in Roquetas de Mar is producing results but the public need to do their bit too, the local council said. Speaking at a presentation of a mosquito prevention campaign, Roquetas mayor Gabriel Amat praised the work of the municipal Urban Cleaning and Parks and Gardens department and the company employed since last May to fumigate and keep the pesky flying nuisances under control. Amat maintained this year had been much better on the mosquito front after going through some “difficult moments.” He also said he believed “we are going to manage to resolve this problem in a municipality in which it is not easy as we have 1,600,000sqm of green areas, as well as natural landscapes.” Urban Cleaning and

mented Fernandez-Pacheco. “The union of tourism and cinema is a successful pairing when it comes to attracting tourists,” he added. House burglars cuffed Residency scam uncovered THREE men suspected of breaking into four properties in Roquetas de Mar are under arrest. Guardia Civil launched an investigation following reports from the owners of three homes located in the same area of the municipality. A patrol arrested one of the suspects when they were checking out a fourth property on the back of a call to the force’s 062 line. Officers spotted an individual hiding between vehicles and detained him before he managed to get away. The Guardia said he admitted breaking into the home and he had two accomplices. Investigations put the trio at the scene of the crimes and one of the suspects in different second-hand shops offloading stolen items. Among the items the thieves took were folding bikes, cameras, tools, a television, fishing equipment, homeware, a vacuum cleaner and an electric toothbrush.

ALMERIA police arrested 14 suspected members of a network getting foreign women Spanish residency through false gender violence claims. The network charged each woman up to €10,000 on the promise of the fake claim gaining them residency status and social benefits on the basis of exceptional circumstances. Once they handed over the cash, the gang provided a man, also of foreign origin, who was prepared to pretend he and the woman were romantically involved. They had to meet up in a public place, and in front of witnesses play act an argument involving physical aggression against the woman. The witnesses alerted the police and reported the insults and words uttered in Spanish to ensure they were understood by everyone. The false victim backed up the statements in court, and as a result gained the benefits established by the authorities for genuine victims of mistreatment.

Getting involved GETTING involved in the Vera and District Lions Club has been a great experience for British expats Chris and Ceri Norman. Not only are they making a valuable contribution to the Lion’s work helping local charities and deserving causes, their responsibilities as the club’s press officers “keep our brains active,” they told the Euro Weekly News. Chris and Ceri joined the Lions after selling their home in the UK, packing most of their belongings into storage and setting out in a fully loaded car to start a new life in Spain. They eventually settled in Arboleas, bought a house and set about making alterations, including the kitchen. That was how they first found out about the Lions and what they do. Explained Ceri, “We tried to sell the old kitchen and were about to scrap it, when the lady who was helping us design the new layout suggested she sell it for us on behalf of Vera and District Lions, of which she is a member. The Lions would then use the money to support local causes. “She also mentioned that the Lions would be happy for us, as they are for any guest, to come to meetings to see if it was something we wanted to join.” Busy getting their house the way they wanted and settling into their new environment, it was a few months before the couple went along to their first meeting.

A few further meetings along they decided to join, and are now active members and the club’s press officers. Vera and District Lions Club was formed in 2011 and received its charter in November 2012. There are Lions clubs throughout Spain and in over 200 countries all over the world. While the Lions Clubs International reaches out across the

globe with offers of help, it is the role of Vera and District Lions Club to help local charities and other deserving causes. No member of the Vera and District Lions Club receives payment: they are all volunteers. The next big fundraising event will be Party in the Park on Sunday April 26 at the El Palmeral Park in Vera. Save the Children recognition

RECOGNITION: The ONG named the school as an ambassador centre for all its efforts. SAVE THE CHILDREN has rewarded a Cuevas del Almanzora school for its work on children’s rights. A representative from Save the Children visited the Nuestra Señora del Rosario school in Guazamara to present a plaque recognising the centre as an ambassador for the ONG for defending and promoting the rights of the child and for taking part in solidarity races for the last 13 years. Also last week the school marked the 40th anniversary of the 1980 referendum which paved the way for Andalucia becoming an autonomous community. Cuevas mayor Antonio Fernandez and Sport, Youth and Citizen Participation councillor Miriam Quintana went along to watch performances by the pupils and to join in with a lunch created from typical local produce. The mayor praised the school for continually organising activities “to defend important values like caring for the environment, inclusion, team spirit, helping others and peace.” He told them, “you do a great job, which without you realising, keeps alive the spirit of union and of fighting for progress which our kinsmen and women had 40 years ago.”

Workplace accident arrests AN accident at a Lucainena de las Torres greenhouse construction site which put an employee in intensive care led to the arrest of the company owner on charges of violating workers’ rights and an undocumented worker for imprudence causing serious injuries. Piecing together the sequence of events from witness statements the Guardia Civil established that one of the workers got onto an agricultural tractor and despite not having any knowledge of how to manoeuvre this kind of vehicle moved a lever which caused it to shoot backwards, going over the victim and colliding with a greenhouse entrance. The injured man was taken to the Nijar health centre in the company van, then he was rushed by ambulance to the Torrecardenas hospital in Almeria City. Investigations centred on the individuals who had been working at the time of accident. It

The Guardia said the company boss had exploited workers’ situations of extreme need or promised to regularise their situation, violating their labour rights. They also uncovered several other irregularities in the company’s operations and in the vehicle involved in the accident: the tractor was not registered and lacked

the corresponding administrative authorisation, civil responsibility insurance and MOT. The Guardia further determined that several of the workers had not done any kind of workplace accident prevention course, while the individual who got onto the tractors did not have the necessary driving licence. The Guardia also found out the company owner had tried to blackmail and made threatening calls to the hurt worker’s family.

VERA is building up to this year’s Easter week celebrations. Mayor Jose Carmelo Jorge Blanco and Festivities councillor Amparo Garcia have unveiled the official poster. In the act staged at the Nuestra Señora de la Encarnacion parish church the council also distributed copies of Vera’s Easter Week guide. It includes details of the programmed acts and processions, as well as photographs and information about each brotherhood. The Festivities councillor took the opportunity to thank all Vera’s Easter association

for their “great effort and dedication every year to organise Easter Week, highlighting the value of Vera’s rich culture and heritage.” The councillor described it as “a very important tourist attraction for our municipality as many visitors come to Vera at this time of year for Easter Week.” Jorge Blanco underlines the collaboration of the local authority to ensure “Easter Week retains its splendour and continues to be a tourist attraction, a time of year of marked religious meaning which unites the whole Christian community.”

RESIDENTS of the El Faz district of Cantoria are set to have improved access to their properties thanks to a provincial infrastructure project requested by the council. The local administration said it had asked the Diputacion de Almeria in 2018 to carry out surfacing and public lighting works on an area of nearly 5,000sqm of roads. The council contributed 30 per cent to the initial €70,000 project budget, but has added a further €40,000 to allow for what the local authority described as “a more definitive solution to the structural deficiencies.” The council referred to El Faz as one of the areas of the municipality with a particular issue in terms of “irregular urban development which gave rise to the illegal property crisis”, and pointed out that

The infrastructure investment is aimed at addressing the lack of road surfaces and installing LED energy efficient technology public lighting in the area, which she said “in the preliminary works for the new general urban land-use plan is noted as a natural growth zone.”

SORBAS has shown off its new football-seven artificial grass pitch, which was funded by a Diputacion de Almeria investment. The provincial government President Javier A Garcia joined Sorbas mayor Jose Fernandez to uncover the inaugural plaque of the newly updated facilities. Also there for the event were Public Works deputy Oscar Liria and Sports deputy Maria Luisa Cruz, along with members of Sorbas Council. The Diputacion provided €160,000 under its Sports Facilities Plan for the upgrades at the San Roque football ground. As well as replacing the pitch’s natural grass with an artificial turf surface, the upgrades included improvements to areas for spectators and players and modifications to the entrances to make them more accessible and safer. Garcia remarked on the huge popularity

of football in Sorbas and said the football ground project was a reflection of his administration’s aim to create equality of services across the province. He also said the new pitch would mean an important saving for the local authority on maintenance and irrigation expenses. The Diputacion launched the €2.6 million Sports Facilities plan for 64 municipalities in 2018. The administration identifies a series of objectives with the initiative. In addition to improving sports facilities across the province and making sport easily accessible, the Diputacion said it is aimed at generating employment, promoting the local economy through hiking and active tourism, addressing the issue of depopulation in inland areas, backing minority sports and promoting a healthy lifestyle and the practice of sport in families.

CUEVAS DEL ALMANZORA has approved the 2020 municipal budget, which Finance councillor Maribel Alarcon said is aimed at improving residents’ lives. The budget puts income for the year at €11.2 million and expenses at €10.8 million, meaning a €400,000 surplus. A council statement mentioned the “shadow of the Monsora case sentence,” which means it will have to meet the €12 million plus interest cost of the compensation with a bank loan. This refers to the award of a works licence for a residential development, which the Junta de Andalucia annulled when the properties were half built. Explaining details of the budget, the Finance councillor said the numbers were “adapted to the social reality of the municipality, remaining faithful to the financial reality of the council and its limitations.” The objective, Alarcon said, is to “improve residents’ lives as a whole and in all areas.” In all €2.5 million will go on daily expenses and services, which include maintenance and social, cultural, tourist and equality programmes and initiatives for local trade.

Budget green light

SENSIBLE: The Finance councillor said the budget plans were adapted to social reality and the financial reality of the local authority. The councillor specifically highlighted a section for improving accessibility to the town hall for people with reduced mobility. A further €1.2 million has been allocated to investments in important projects in Cuevas town and in outlying areas like improving road surfaces, public lighting, schools, the market and sports facilities.

Some of this year’s budget is for projects already underway, among them the restoration of the Marques de Los Velez castle, which includes moving the Local Police station to a new location. Among the other important initiatives are the construction of cycle lanes to connect the whole municipality, the reform of the archaeological museum,

and creating a new hiking route named after archaeologist and illustrator Luis Siret, which is being 70 per cent funded by the Junta de Andalucia. “The investments which will be made in Cuevas this year are not only found featured in the investment section, but are added to the fruit of the work of other years to achieve projects, which shows once again the effort of this government team to make Cuevas del Almanzora a town of reference in the area and in the province,” Alarcon affirmed. She underlined the importance of making the most of assistance and subsidies from other public administrations to ensure the limits of the council budget do not stifle the municipality’s capacity for growth and to meet the new challenges which arise from advances in society. She referred specifically to projects like new schools in Las Herrerias and Burjulo, the enlargement of the Palomares school, the Jaroso institute and the health centre, the excavation of the Phoenician necropolis in Villaricos and improvements in municipal communications.

Waste dumping controls C U E VA S C o u n c i l i s planning to introduce n e w c o n t ro l s o n t h e dumping of agricultural waste aimed at prot e c t i n g t h e e n v i ro n ment and public health. The Environment department is working on a by-law which will establish a legal framework for the regulation of the production and management of residues generated by the productive processes of agricultural exploitations and the municipality’s secondary and complementary agriculture businesses. The by-law will ban producing, generating, depositing and dumping agricultural residue and waste of any kind in areas around agricultural exploitations, in water courses, on boundaries, on roads, in ditches, on unused land or any public or private areas.

WORRYING SITUATION: Cuevas Council says uncontrolled dumping represents a risk to the environment and to public health. Fines for violating the by-law could be as high as €30,000. “With this preventative measure we aim to bring to an end a worrying situation in our municipality, with the proliferation of uncontrolled dumps, specifically on the side of the River Almanzora,”

explained Cuevas mayor Antonio Fernandez. The mayor also called for citizen collaboration, “because it is essential to report these kinds of facts with the aim of preventing damage to the environment and the health of our residents. “The council is going

to control and penalise these kinds of situations,” Fernandez promised. “Caring for the environment is a matter for everyone,” he added. “As our cleaning campaign says, ‘Cuevas is everyone’s. Cuevas is your home. Look after it’.”

Bridge project go-ahead THE provincial government has given the go-ahead to a project to transform the old bridge in Turre connecting the village with the sports ground. Diputacion de Almeria Vice-President and Public Works Deputy Oscar Liria has announced that the administration has approved allocating the €250,000 works which will upgrade and make good the Avenida de Garrucha and the ‘Puente Viejo.’ The bridge was cut off to traffic more than 10 years ago. It is still used as a walkway, but it is in a pretty poor state of repair. The idea is to improve access to the sports grounds close to the bridge, the bridge itself and the surrounding area. Works will include repairs, new pave-

ments, resurfacing, and creating a pedestrian walkway leading to the sports facilities complete with benches, lighting, rubbish bins and plant pots. There will also be improvements to access to the last properties on the Garrucha highway with a lane divided from the pedestrian area by a slope and a cement block wall. “These are among the most important works which are going to be carried out in the municipality under the Provincial Plans,” Liria commented. “It is going to mean the transformation of this area of the municipality and highlight the value of the bridge as a sport and tourism resource,” he added. “We want it to become a meeting point for the municipality.”

Archaeological route riches CUEVAS DEL ALMANZORA has presented the locality’s architectural riches at the fourth Phoenicians’ Route Spanish Network event staged in Granada. Cuevas archaeologist and guide Laura Larios explained to the participants that Cuevas boasts more than 30 documented archaeological sites - Paleolithic, Copper Age, Bronze Age, Argaric, Iberian, Phoenician, Roman, Arab, Visigoth and Byzantine and there has been no less than 15 centuries of continued occupation in Villaricos. Key places featured in the Cuevas presentation included the Phoenician necropolis in Villaricos and the augmented reality app

PROMOTION: The Culture and Tourism councillor said the event helped put Cuevas’ heritage and history on the map. which allows for ‘visits’ to an ancient burial chamber. Also featuring were the Almizaraque and Fuente Alamo archaeological sites, the 19th century industrial architecture, and the municipality’s monuments, museums and tourism resources. There was mention too of

current projects like the 19th century mining tunnel in Villaricos, the Luis Siret walking route, as well as plans for the future archaeological excavation in the area of the old Villaricos salting factory. Culture and Tourism councillor Maria Isabel Ponce Sabiote stressed the

importance of taking part in events like the Phoenician Route gathering as a means of promoting the municipality. The councillor said they also served as an opportunity to network with other areas “with which we have things in common, to exchange impressions and to be proactive when it comes to developing projects which put our important heritage on the national and international map.” Cuevas joined the Phoenicians’ Route Spanish Network in 2017. Marking Andalucia Day THERE were a series of celebrations in Mojacar to celebrate Andalucia Day. On the day itself there was the traditional raising of the Andalucian flag at the Plaza del Ayuntamiento by Mayor Rosmari Cano, accompanied by councillors and members of the public. The Town Band performed the Andalucian anthem as the flag rose, followed by a medley of Spanish music which soon had locals and visitors on their feet for a dance to celebrate the day. The council’s programme of events continued with the release of green and white biodegradable balloons in the Plaza Nueva, followed by a giant paella offered free to everyone going along to the Plaza de Parterre. Later that day there was a concert at the multi-uses centre showcasing the skills of local guitar and

Extra bins ADRA Council has increased the municipality’s paper and carton recycling capacity by 20 per cent. The local authority has acquired additional recycling bins and replaced skips which were in a poor condition, upping the total number from 85 to 110. This has allowed the council to install paper recycling bins in areas where they were previously lacking. Adra mayor Manuel Cortes went to take a look at some of new bins in situ. “They have been distributed around different areas of the town and outlying areas, meeting the needs of each zone,” he commented. He explained they had started with “substituting those containers we considered had deteriorated with the passage of time or due to vandalism with new

DOCKED: The Black Watch brought 700 British tourists to Almeria.

Cruise ship season underway THE Almeria cruise ship season has got underway with the docking of the Black Watch at the provincial capital port last week with 700 British tourists on board. The ship remained docked in Almeria until 6pm, when it set sail for Lisbon. The ship, which has already visited the province in 2011, is doing a 13-night cruise starting and ending in Southampton, and making ports of call in Cadiz, Malaga, Almeria, Lisbon and Vigo in Galicia. There are currently 20 cruise ship moor-

ings at Almeria port lined up until November 23. The Almeria Port Authority revealed that the biggest cruise liner due to dock in the province this year is the 262-metre long Marella Explorer, which will visit in early November. It has capacity for 1,900 passengers and crew. Five ships are confirmed as coming to Almeria in April, most of them arriving from Malaga. In 2019 25 cruise liners carrying a total of 7,717 passengers visited the province.

Adra project recognition ADRA has received one of 10 Bandera Andaluza awards for human values for its ‘KMCERO’ project aimed at promoting local produce and cuisine. The Junta de Andalucia’s delegation in Almeria

organised the recognitions to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the referendum on the autonomy of the community of Andalucia with the idea of highlighting the value of individuals or collectives “which

promote the development and growth of Almeria and our community.” Mayor Manuel Cortes attended the ceremony in Vera to receive the award from Junta Agriculture, Farming, Fishing and Sustainable Development regional minister Carmen Crespo, who is an Adra native. “This is an honour awarded in the category of human values, values which represent our municipality’s hospitality sector. Because this is the main pillar which cements this ambitious project”, Cortes told the audience.

He dedicated the recognition to Adra’s wining and dining business owners, describing them as “professionals proud of their roots, who without forgetting the thousand-yearold culinary tradition which characterises our town enjoy innovation in their dishes.” The mayor explained KMCERO stemmed from the objective of “helping this sector to promote itself, to continue advancing in professionalisation and training, as well as to promote Adra cooking and the products of our land.”

Young muggers nicked TWO young muggers accused of robbing at least six people in Almeria of their mobile phones and valuables are under arrest. Police said the 18- and 20-year-old approached their targets, usually people around their own age, on the pretext of asking them for a euro. One would then grab the victim round the neck while the other searched among their clothing for anything worth stealing and grabbed any bags they were carrying. The managed to get their hands on six smartphones, more than €100 in cash, and gold and silver jewellery. Police identified the pair as NLL and AEB, both of Moroccan origin. They are being held in prison awaiting trial.

GUARDIA CIVIL are investigating a Roquetas de Mar resident suspected of smuggling protected species into the province from Africa. Officers found two dead and decomposing pangolins, or scaly anteaters in a suitcase which had been kept in an airline lost baggage storage area, and which the owner was claiming back. Identified as 25-year-old AAE, she had checked in the case in Malabo in Equatorial Guinea for a flight to Madrid and with a stopover in Casablanca in Morocco, which is where it got misplaced. Hence she did not check it in for the flight to Almeria. Once the case had been located the 25-year-old claimed she had nothing to declare, but when officers opened it they found the dead anteaters minus their entrails and scales, wrapped in plastic and concealed among clothing.

Protected species smuggling suspect

EXTINCTION RISK: There is high demand for pangolin scales on the black market. Animal Health and the SOIVRE external trade inspection, surveillance and regulation service identified the two creatures as pangolins, an animal covered by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES). It is in fact catalogued as in serious danger of extinction due to

the high demand for its scales on the black market. Given the decomposition of the anteaters and risk of disease, they were handed over to Customs under a 2016 European regulation. AAE faces charges for a crime related to flora and fauna and for the illegal trafficking of a protected or in danger of extinction species.

Pepper thieves pinched THREE individuals are under arrest for stealing kilos of Italian green peppers from a Vicar greenhouse. Local Police and Guardia Civil officers surprised the three after they were called out by the property owner. When officers arrived they found the owner at the greenhouse entrance watching three cheeky burglars cutting down his peppers and shoving them into plastic bags. When the pepper robbers realised the police had turned up they tried to make a run for it, but did not get very far. It turned out they had seven crates filled with the vegetable, each weighing some 40 kilos each, all set to be loaded onto a vehicle. What’s more, officers discovered the vehicle had no insurance and the MOT was out of date Further investigations revealed that the trio had already stolen a box of peppers and two boxes of tomatoes from another property which they had then sold. Identified as 39-year-old JANR, 40-year-old JARE and 50-year-old FGP, all from Roquetas de Mar, they face charges of theft.

He is touring his show Larks in Transit around Europe and has just three performances in Spain, Barcelona, Madrid and Torremolinos and when asked why Torremolinos he explained, “The British public first discovered overseas holidays in southern Spain and Torremolinos was one of the earliest towns to embrace tourism. “My first foreign holiday was there when I was 10

with my family and I thought that it would be fun to go back all these years later to perform.” He is now a past master at dealing with foreign audiences having toured all over the world and said that when he first started in countries where English wasn’t the first language he mainly performed to expatriates, but now there is a mix of different nationalities who seem to understand and enjoy his brand of humour. “Unlike many comedians, I’m very gentle so that I appeal to a family audience and I have fans ranging from children to pensioners,” he told me. “I love Spain, in fact I have just been on holiday with my son Dax doing a

Yes he does smoke a pipe occasionally but likes to have a prop pipe on stage as it “makes me look intelligent” he chuckled. Finally, when asked to name his favourite album, he said without hesitation ‘Remain in Light by Talking Heads.’ A charming man with a unique blend of quirky and clever humour.

INVESTMENT: The local council spent €48,000 on the works.

Traffic hub VERA Council has carried out a series of works designed to improve safety and accessibility at one of the town’s traffic hubs. The local authority has invested just over €48,000 in the area close to the Reyes Catolicos school, where there is access to the El Palmeral fairground and sports grounds. Measures have included creating a roundabout, resurfacing roads, updating pavements and creating pavements where they were lacking, and new street signs.

“The main problem of this intersection is that at the same crossroads there were four roads with scarce visibility to be able to cross correctly, causing a high level of danger for both vehicles and pedestrians, with an intense volume of traffic which as a result was very indecisive and dangerous, and on top of this there was the poor state of the surface due to opening up a number of trenches for works on different networks,” pointed out Vera Infrastructure councillor Alfonso Garcia.”

Anyone who has lived continuously in the UK between 1980 and 1996 (a minimum of one year) will not be able to donate blood in Spain due to the risk of transmitting mad cow disease. Similarly, there are restrictions if you have received a blood transfer in the UK. However, each region may have different rules about donation. Call the donation helpline on 935 573 500. If you are eligible, you can give blood at your local hospital, or via the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja) at one of their clinics, or in one of their mobile units. Despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain blood is through the generosity of the public. The blood is carefully screened for disease to make sure it is safe. After a tattoo, you must wait four months to be eligible to donate. After surgery, the exclusion period will depend on the type of intervention. After minor surgical procedures, you cannot donate blood for seven days or until you are fully recovered. After undergoing major surgery, you will not be able to donate blood for four months. According to her, a pro­ gressive government should not increase a tax that hits everyone no matter how poor they may be and should look for selective tar­ geted tax increases although

she hasn’t completely ruled out a review of IVA in the fu­ ture. Tobacco and gambling are however likely to see some increases to combat addic­ tion.

Pound GBP/EUR: Steady at €1.18 GBP/USD: Down from $1.30 to $1.29 The pound has traded in a wide range over the past four weeks, most­ ly as a result of renewed uncertainty surrounding Brexit. This was mostly centred on con­ cerns that trade negotiations between the UK and EU are likely to be chal­ lenging due to the conflicting goals of both sides. While the EU is pushing for the UK to maintain alignment in order to en­ sure a ‘level playing field,’ Boris John­ son has been clear that the UK will not abide by any EU regulations from next year. These concerns over Brexit proved to be a major drag on GBP ex­ change rates in February, preventing the pound from benefiting from some

Despite the Brexit gloom, Sterling was still able to find fleeting support in mid­February following a Cabinet reshuffle. Looking ahead to March, the pound is likely to become increasingly sensi­ tive to Brexit developments as UK­EU

trade talks officially get underway. Ex­ pect this to inject fresh volatility into Sterling if negotiations prove difficult. GBP investors will also be focused on the publication of the UK govern­ ment’s Budget on March 11, with the pound poised to surge if the new Chancellor signals a willingness to loosen the purse strings. Euro EUR/GBP: Steady at £0.84 EUR/USD: Down from $1.10 to $1.09

The euro struggled in February as investors grew increasingly concerned about the health of the Eurozone economy. Much of the concern has been fo­ cused around Germany, which (in ad­ dition to some gloomy manufacturing figures) now faces increased political uncertainty following the shock resig­ nation of Angela Merkel’s heir appar­ ent, Annegret Kramp­Karrenbauer as leader of the ruling CDU party. Further limiting the appeal of the single currency was the serious coron­ avirus outbreak in Italy, which spurred fears the country’s already weak econ­ omy could slip into a recession this year. Going forward, the attention of EUR investors is likely to be split be­ tween the start of UK­EU trade negoti­ ations and Eurozone data as they look for any signs that the Eurozone’s re­ cent slowdown may be bottoming out. US Dollar USD/GBP: Up from £0.76 to £0.77 USD/EUR: Up from €0.90 to €0.91 The US dollar climbed steadily high­ er through much of February as grow­ ing panic over the Coronavirus crisis

IN a past life, when this ol’ boy was riding the crest, I would often enjoy showing guests around my brand new Berkshire home. Many famous folk came to visit in those far off heady ‘60’s’ days and on one occasion I was entertaining an extremely well known musician and his new fiancée. He was obviously besotted with his partner, a beautiful, ambitious and well-travelled young lady who, although relatively unknown at the time, in the next few years would become one of biggest stars on the planet. The pop musician, a lovely lad who hailed from a small town in the north of England, had shot to stardom almost ‘overnight’ and, although quite charming, was not at all street wise and still somewhat naïve in the ways of the world. During the ‘tour’ I showed them one of the somewhat lavish en suite bathrooms. Peering around his eyes alighted on the toilet bowl. ‘Ee Leapy’ he exclaimed. ‘What’s all that blue stuff in the water?’ How I replied to this innocent and innocuous enquiry is not important. What was important was the look of utter

And you know something, I experienced exactly the same misgiving when I heard Prince Harry enthusiastically inform the head of Walt Disney that his wife could do ‘voice overs.’ In the main voice overs in the acting profession are about one step up from a ‘walk on.’ Although it’s possible for recognisable

voices to earn quite a substantial income from this branch of the entertainment industry, participants don’t exactly ever find themselves on the red carpet! You certainly don’t take the opportunity to very publicly inform one of the biggest tycoons of the film industry that your (TV star!) wife does voice overs! I can imagine the grimace of horrified embarrassment on Meghan’s face from here! To me this conveyed exactly the same message as did the bathroom incident I witnessed all those years ago - incompatibility. And the end result will be exactly the same. In short, this self-centered woman will be ready to move on from her Canadian stopover and drag poor old Harry down to California’s Glitter Town, where he’ll be used as her golden ticket to the ‘A’ list chocolate factory. As love’s young dream begins to fade and their incompatibilities begin to tear them apart, this pathetically naïve young man will eventually become so fed up and disillusioned he will either turn to drink, have a nervous breakdown or come running back to Granny! Humans by their nature are pretty volatile, anger fuelled, tantrum tickling creatures who strut and strop their hour upon the stage in paroxysms of both sound and fury. My own father had a tendency to erupt at the least provocation bellowing and cursing all and sundry and sometimes hurling clocks (a story for another time) and random unsecured objects unfortunate enough to be in his path. men... who were a little sensitive at this time (check out Tudor codpieces!). Throughout history wars, conflicts and all manner of nasty events have been caused by one person’s anger (or indeed group’s... anger is after all highly contagious) against another, some imagined slur or lack of respect induces a tantrum in the mighty and then all hell breaks loose. Henry the Eighth, the least chilled monarch, was famous for his propensity to huffily send friends and family to the block (imagine how stressful a place the English court must have been… you really wouldn’t want to break those eggshells). Wrath, or anger if you prefer, boils the blood and shuts down the reasoning part of the brain. The red mist really does descend and blind with rage is an actual human condition blocking all thought and care. Many foul deeds have been committed in anger the lashing out both momentary and unthinking; a Cobra strike with no

antidote or redress. Those quick to anger, the bad tempered, the volatile, suffer from that shutting down of reason that prevents them from making good choices. Anger is debilitating and all consuming in a way that no other human emotion is (apart from grief). A quick temper is a terrible affliction. Hurtful words flung in anger burn deeply, the embers glowing forever. Fortunately I am not an angry person. I have been bad tempered at times but with age, along with wrinkles and the need to pee every five minutes, comes a couldn’t care less attitude. I really do not give a flying fig what anyone thinks of me and life is too short to stoke the coals of an adult tantrum. Injustice, Poverty, Discrimination are the only states that deservedly engender a burning rage in the human psyche, yet none of these is even considered a sin. Now that makes me angry. Toodle Pip!

Has this happened to you before? MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man LAST year for my birthday I was very kindly given some gift cards for my favourite large store El Corte Ingles. As I didn’t really need to buy anything immediately I put them away and then when I decided to have a little shop I took them out and went off to treat myself. I had a look round, found a few bits and went off to pay for them. I had seven of these gift cards but didn’t actually know how much they were for so I asked the assistant to check for me. She swiped them and told me four didn’t work. So I asked why? And she said it was to do with the magnetic strip and asked if they had been in my pocket. Well of course they had been in my pocket. This was now becoming reminiscent of my other nightmare scenario of getting my hotel key card then going to my room which is located about 12 miles from reception and finding that my key card won’t work. No matter how slowly I swipe it or

how fast I try and insert it in and out of the cavity provided, the light will not turn green. I, of course, do all the checks like making sure it’s the right room number before trekking back to reception, dragging my suitcase don’t forget, and asking for a new key. By now there is a different person at the desk who decides that she needs to see my ID again before she can give me a new key. I’m told not to put it in my pocket near my credit cards or telephone! Back to the store and I am now being told the same thing by the sales assistant. OK, no problem, just re-activate the cards. No, you have to go to customer services and get it sorted. Of course, there is a massive queue but eventually get it sorted. But what I did do was get them all merged so I only had one card. The point is if they know what causes the problem and it’s happening all day every day, as I was told by the hotel and the store, why don’t they fix it? It can’t be that difficult surely in this day and age when everybody has a mobile phone and credit cards. I’d love to know how many of you this has happened to.

Pause for Humility I RARELY get much feedback to these items in Euro Weekly News, but a few weeks back I received comment that I wasn’t doing much to advertise our Church; that I should instead present a far more upbeat description of all the successes and wonderful services of praise and worship, particularly over the Christmas period. I appreciate the comment and could indeed satisfy such wishes, with many illustrations of what a great Church I attend. But to me, that would be wrong; far more illustrative of self-aggrandisement and boastfulness than Jesus Christ, the unassuming essence of humility and understatement that his Church should endeavour to portray. And now, as we enter the period known as Lent, when we Christians traditionally reflect on the temptations Jesus endured over a six-week period following his baptism, these concerns seem particularly relevant. For each of the three temptations recorded considers an easy, dramatic approach to convince folk to follow him rather than the hard, painful and unpopular path he’d been called to pursue. The first was to satisfy his natural hunger by using his powers to change

stones into bread. The second was to perform an incredible stunt, jumping off the top of the highest building around, to survive and walk away unscathed. The third was to sacrifice his moral principles and use devious means to guarantee himself untold wealth and power. Can you imagine the publicity and adulation he could have won from any of these antics? Face-manuscript of the day would have gone wild, and I-pipe would have crashed the outernet as these events would have been the absolute must-watch for everyone! But Jesus rejected such cheap publicity stunts, responding with ‘Get away, Satan! Remember: ‘You must worship the Lord your God and no-one else.’’ And in rejecting these temptations, Jesus recognised such options were tantamount to worshipping humanity rather than God, the ultimate feeding of egotism, which so often characterises modern marketing and publicity in glorifying individuals and human values rather than those of the Divine. So I’ll not be promoting our Church on Facebook, but will endeavour to defend in every way possible, the integrity and humility of Jesus Christ.

What cost kindness..? GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY RECENTLY I was a guest on Talk Radio Europe, to discuss bullying and online trolling. The sudden death of TV personality Caroline Flack, was enough for people to sit up and take notice of a situation that has been out of control for quite some time. For years, I’ve been on the receiving end of online trolls, as well as certain mainstream journalists, who felt it was okay to write negative, and sometimes very personal things about me. People I have never met, with such serious dislike for me. How can it be that someone can bother you so much, having never met them in the real world? To read these articles online, can bring you down. Especially when complete lies appear, and others can comment as they see fit. So, for years I have opted to ignore it all, even when people made it their

business to draw my attention to the hatred out there. In the days following the radio interview, I saw many people change their social media profiles to include a ‘Be kind’ logo or message. While all awareness is good, it made me think, we need kindness much closer to home, than online. Start by being kind to those we encounter on a daily basis. Be kind to the man you pass on the street, smile. Be kind by simply holding a door for someone. Be kind by biting your tongue, when someone does something to annoy you. We never know what’s going on in anyone’s life, so why add to the stress? As the week unfolded, I found myself lunching at the Marbella Club Hotel, a place that’s been a firm favourite for many years. I was due to meet a lady who wanted to ask my advice on curating a serious art collection. She arrived, and let’s say, was noticed by the other diners, who turned as she walked through the room. Head-to-toe in Hermes, with enough sparkle to make Harry Winston jealous, on paper she was typically Marbella.

GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY: Start by being kind to those we encounter on a daily basis. While she wanted to collect art, it was clear she already collected compliments. However, within moments of saying hello, I realised that there was a prob-

lem. Something that I was unable to handle. As the waiter approached the table, she was blatantly rude towards him. Cold, dismissive and snobbish. Why do certain types of people feel it’s okay to treat waiters, or anyone, in such a way? As if by putting them down, they’re building themselves up? I watched for as long as I could bare, as she spoke at the charming, smiling waiter. Her tone, as if he’d asked if her Birkin was real! After the first course of lunch was complete, I whispered across the table “this isn’t going to work.” Bewildered, coldly she asked what I was talking about, her rudeness now directed at me. Calling for the bill, I explained that I couldn’t stand to remain in her company, and how I wouldn’t feel right about helping her source an art collection. Yes, my words were harsh and final, but I felt that sometimes there are situations, where one must be less kind to certain people, in order to offer kindness to those who deserve it most. Even if that kindness costs you a tidy commission fee.

‘Flag of Andalucia’ Award to the Consular Corps of Malaga CONSULAR MATTERS FEBRUARY 28 is the official celebration of the Day of Andalucia, and this year also marks the 40th anniversary of the Andalucian Autonomy, as part of the festive celebrations, every year awards are given by the Andalucian Parliament in recognition to personalities and groups within the province for their admirable work and contribution to the dynamics, development and general enrichment of Malaga and regions. This year, the Flag of Andalucia to the Projection of the Province has been awarded to the Malaga Consular Corps for its contribution to international relations of Malaga City, fundamental for its projection and support to the resident international

community in the province. The Consular Corps of Malaga, an institution which I am honoured to belong to, in my position as Consul of Denmark for Andalucia and Extremadura, represents 43 countries in Malaga, creates consulates in Malaga on a successful and extensive projection level. Over the years, issues like security, climate, tourism, profitable investments and the friendliness of its people have been the main attractions of Malaga to foreigners. Some Consulates have been present in Malaga for centuries, such as the Danish Consulate that was inaugurated in 1641, and in later years came the German, The Netherlands and the United Kingdom Consulates. As early as the 19th century, 21 Consulates or Vice-Consulates were registered in Malaga; and increased in numbers when American nations were added. The historical origins of Andalucian self-government, go

back to the revolutionary uprising in Cadiz, in the 19th century, when greater democracy and government decentralisation were demanded. And as early as in the 20th century, highlights of the political profile of Blas Infante, ‘Father of the Andalucian Land’ are found, who, along with members of several Andalucian Centres, signed in 1919, the Andalucian Manifesto of Cordoba that described Andalucia as a national reality. A Notary by profession, Blas Infante was also a great thinker, politician, writer, historian and musicologist, who recovered the original green and white Andalucian flag, designed the Andalucian coat of arms, and composed the lyrics of the Andalucian anthem, before being shot in 1936. DEAR Euro Weekly, Over the weekend I read a story on your Facebook page regarding a lady being removed from the beach in Carvajal as she had her dog with her. I walked from Fuengirola to Carvajal on Sunday and I had my dog on the boulevard on a leash, because she bombs along the beach! I noticed dogs on the beach all the way along. As a resident and dog owner I was under the impression that at certain times of the year, out of season, you can take your dogs on the beach as long as you have their medical details with you. The Carvajal stretch of beach was mostly empty of bathers over the weekend so I really don’t understand why the woman was singled out. Was the officer trying to make some money from a fine as he had not fulfilled his quota that day or does he just have problems with non-Spanish people? If Euro Weekly were to get the update of the times we can have the dogs on the beach so we can wave it in their faces next time that would help greatly. Yours lovingly David Thompson

Andalucia flop Euro Weekly, Loved your coverage of ‘Dia de Andalucia’ but dare I say it was a bit of a damp squib. What I had hoped would be a massive street party and celebration in my area was a complete letdown. As your articles pointed out last week the significance of the day and different traditions, you would think that people would have let their hair down a little. I did see one video of a small party in one little area but I live in a big town and there was nothing of note. In Britain, they would need to nationalise transport to be able to do the same of course. Also, in the UK, demand for trains is already beyond capacity so making it free will just make it worse. WITH recent news of the tragic passing of one of Britain’s brightest TV stars, Caroline Flack, the situation will not only be one of grief, but reflection and will again raise the question of how hard can the press push a person all for the sake of a big story? The young TV host’s energy, kindness and huge talent made her one in a million, and a massive favourite with audiences of all ages. Health minister Matt Hancock made an appropriate point when he said: “We must do much more as a society to look out for each other, whether online or off.” Well-known charities like the Samaritans who work hard to prevent suicide have pointed out there are often many complex reasons for why someone chooses to take their own life regardless of their history, social standing or outward personality. Why was the decision made to push forward with the court case Caroline was currently embroiled in? The boyfriend who was involved in an alleged case of gender violence wanted to drop the charges, and her management team had been very clear in saying that she was in a vulnerable state. We must realise that from our close family to friends, and neighbours, we can all positively impact on others’ well-being. Whether it be asking if someone is ok, offering an ear for a chat or a shoulder to cry on, even the smallest act could make an important difference. If there is one thing we can take from this terrible tragedy, it’s remembering to reach out.

DETOX YOUR JUDGEMENT DIONE LOCKYER WE have all been there at some point in our lives. You meet a friend for coffee or lunch, you’re enjoying the atmosphere and company whilst having a good catch up. You start by telling each other how your week’s been, what you’ve been up to and then it starts... Did you hear about.........? Or have you heard the latest about.......? Yes, I’m talking about gossip! It may start off as an innocent conversation, but then in comes your opinion and judgement on the matter. It’s almost as if it has become a part of modern day society, but the question is, why do we judge other people and their lives? Why do we feel we have the right to an opinion?

It’s simple really, it all starts with YOU! When we feel the need to look at other people’s lives and judge what they are doing, it is due to the fact that there is something going on in our own lives that we are not ready to admit to. This may be something as far back as childhood or even recent events. You may have been told you’re not pretty enough, not brave enough, not intelligent enough. This produces a feeling of self doubt, a sense of loneliness, fear and a lack of self worth. Then the ego takes over! In order to make ourselves feel better, we start to create an opinion of others. We start to judge their decisions in life. It could be anything from what they wear, who they’re dating, how they parent their children. We become so attached to this feeling that we become separated from our true self. It almost becomes an addictive drug! The more we judge others, the less chance we have at looking at the real, raw and honest feelings

that we feel and the reasons behind them. You avoid your own wounds and numb your own pain. It feels easier that way. The truth is we can overcome this by simply asking ourselves four questions; 1. What and whom am I judging? 2. How does this judgement make me feel? 3. Why do I feel justified in this judgement? 4. What moment in my life triggered me to feel justified in this judgement? By asking ourselves these questions, we are able to witness our judgement, honour the feeling, forgive ourselves and learn to heal. I urge each one of my wonderful readers to give this exercise a try. The moment you feel the need to judge another, put pen to paper and answer the questions above. Be descriptive. Write every detail that comes to your mind. Witness the feelings you experience. It may feel uncomfortable at first, but trust in the process.

While there’s plenty of helpful advice available at the end of our fingertips, there’s also a lot of misinformation and getting it wrong can create more problems than it solves. Even so, there is some truth to this at-home acne remedy. A link between apple cider vinegar and its ability to kill some bad bacteria has been established. “Vinegar has been popular for centuries as a way of fighting illness,” says dermatologist Dr Ismat Nasiruddin. “Apple cider vinegar is mainly apple juice which has yeast added to ferment it into alcohol and bacteria. The ‘mother,’ which is the yeast and bacteria component, is

Flying high MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED ENJOYING life with a mental illness is a strange thing. You learn to appreciate the ‘good times’ more because you know it could change at any minute. For those of you who are not familiar with the ter m ‘manic episode’ - it’s when someone with bipolar disorder experiences a ‘high’ so to speak. Over the years I have learned to recognise my mania, and to enjoy it now it is being treated with medication - everything just feels exciting, euphoric and at the same time overwhelming. The world all of a sudden seems magnificent. My creative mind is unleashed and my head feels like it’s about to explode with a thousand racing thoughts, but it doesn’t matter, I’M ON TOP OF THE WORLD!!! My words get tangled up when trying to have a conversation, so I get irritated with everyone. I don’t understand why they aren’t going at the same speed as me, why does their day seem grey when mine is so colourful …? I wear red lipstick and my hair is always perfect, I obsessively clean the whole house with bleach often ending up with burns and sores on my hands. I bake cakes, pies and cook meals to feed hundreds. I obsess over songs, playing the same one over and over again until I am word perfect. It’s usually during this stage my family worry the most, because they know the higher I go, the harder my world is going to come crashing down. I may be a little controversial with this article, but bear with me. Part of the reason for stigma around bipolar disorder is that we can be a little difficult to talk to

and understand. During the mania phase I have a tendency to just talk whatever is on my mind most of the time with no filter. Often shutting people up or talking over them, when all I really want to do is to be able to tell you everything on my mind. Here are five small points on how you can support someone with bipolar. • Avoid patronising words - “Are you drunk?” “Have you taken your pills?” No I’m not drunk and yes I have taken my medication… there is a chemical imbalance in my brain that causes these highs and lows that I have no control over. • Keep them company - Sometimes all I want to do is be near someone I can trust, I simply just don’t want to be alone. • Protect them from harm - Express your concerns over my manic behaviour, health or lifestyle. I sometimes can’t see it. • Encourage me - If I am obsessing about something that isn’t particularly har mful, let me work through it, I may benefit from it. • Prepare for the crash - Will you catch me when I fall? DID you catch the recent news that frightened flyers are set to lose their ‘emotional support’ animals? American airliner cabins could soon be free of ducks, pigs and miniature horses under government proposals to crack down on passengers flying with ‘emotional support’ animals. Passengers have tried to board aircraft with snakes, spiders, gliding possums and squirrels. These incidents have sometimes caused delays when the crew refuse entry to an animal. “The days of Noah’s Ark in the air are hopefully coming to an end,� a member of a flight attendants union reported optimistically. Making Fish & Chips at Home? I’VE always been of the opinion that you shouldn’t try to recreate that British favourite fish & chips at home. Well, after the last few times of taking some home and being so disappointed in the greasy, flabby battered fish and pasty coloured chips I thought I could do better. After rescuing a deep fat fryer from the shed I set about trying to find a recipe for the best batter. It wasn’t hard to find on the internet. Make your tartar sauce and put in the fridge. Chop some drained capers, gherkins, shallot and parsley and add to some mayonnaise. Add a squeeze of lemon, salt and pepper, mix well and put in the fridge until needed. For the beer batter mix 75ml of lager,

75ml sparkling water, 1tsp turmeric, 1tsp baking powder, 50g of flour and 50g of cornflour and leave for 30 minutes. For the triple cooked chips peel and cut potatoes into as many chips as you feel you need. Put in some boiling, salted water for two minutes. Then drain on a rack. When dry, give them their second cooking for about six minutes in the fryer at 120º. Then drain and leave to one side. Dip your fish fillets (I used hake) in the batter and then put into the fryer at 150º (Tip: Take the basket out!). When golden, drain. Keep warm in oven. Turn fryer up to 190º and finish the chips. Golden? Crispy? Done!

Emotion of Beethoven in art THE music of Beethoven was the inspiration for an Almeria City art exhibition. ‘Variaciones plasticas en torno a Beethoven’ (Visual art revolving around Beethoven) has been put together by the Arte Ibañez Cosentino Foundation for the Almeria Museo de Arte Espacio 2 gallery to mark the 250th anniversary of the great composer’s birth. The exhibition features 27 works by Andres Garcia Ibañez, one of the leading figures in Spanish realism. The artist first discovered the music of Beethoven when he was a child and he has studied his work in depth. The result is 21 large oil paintings from his ‘Del corazon al corazon’ (From heart to heart) series, created almost 25 years ago when Garcia Ibañez was an architecture student, and six smaller oil paintings from the ‘La mascara de Beethoven’ (The mask of Beethoven) series painted in 2015. The artist said the inspiration for the smaller works came from two plaster Beethoven death masks he bought after visiting the house where the composer was born in Germany. Garcia Ibañez explained he sees his pictorial relationship with Beethoven not as a translation in images of the value of his music, but of the emotion it provokes. “I always found a twin soul in him, and that is why my works are an emotional approximation of his work,” he said. This is the first time the whole series of paintings are being shown outside the Museo Casa Ibanez in Olula del Rio. The exhibition runs until March 22.

Museum plans PLANS are afoot to c o n v e r t Z u r g e n a ’s Molino chimney tower into a museum. The Junta de Andalucia’s Tourism, Regeneration, Justice and Local Administration delegation in Almeria has awarded a €51,000 subsidy to the council to turn the tower and adjacent storehouse into what it is hoped will become a visitor attraction. “It is a unique place which deserves our support for its renovation and incorporation into our province’s offer,” the regional government’s Tourism delegate Jose Luis Delgado commented during a visit to Zurgena. According to Delgado investments of this kind

“will contribute to improving the appeal of the municipality by highlighting the value of its heritage. “Inland tourism now represents more than 20 per cent of the visitors who come to our region, hence it is essential to continue backing the improvement of its attractions since this segment is a strong factor in breaking seasonality,” he added. The tower project will include works on the structure, electrics and surrounding land, as well as carpentry and painting. The financing comes under one of four lines of regional Tourism ministry subsidies for improving and highlighting cultural heritage in inland municipalities, and making it universally accessible.

Sunshine and great play for bowling pairs

THE weather was kind with warm sunshine for the Almeria Bowling Club Ladies’ Club Pairs Jackson Cup and the Men’s Club Pairs Parsons Trophy competitions. It was Catherine Patrick and Sheila Allen against Carole Roberts and Eileen Phoenix in the Jackson Cup Final. Catherine and Sheila had a good start. Carole and Eileen crept up and went ahead on the third end, but although playing well it was Catherine and Sheila who triumphed in the end. The Parsons Trophy was Brian Hallam and Paul Fitzhugh pitched against Chris Ewer and Ron Lloyd. Unfortunately for Chris and Ron, Brian and Paul were on fire and won the championship comfortably. Chris and Ron had reached the final by beating Colin Wright and Reg Birmingham in the semis, while Brian

and Paul were successful over John Fitzgerald and Graham Patrick. In the ladies’ semi-finals, Carole and Eileen beat Barbra R e a rd o n a n d K a r e n R u s h t o n and Catherine and Sheila won against Christina Fitzgerald and Linda Burgess. The Captain Chris Brown thanked Tony Lear for running the competition, Alan Deacon for umpiring on the Sunday, Bryan Hughes for putting out the rinks each day, Tony Lear for taking the photographs and the many people who turned out to support the competitions. El Bandido runners MOJACAR’S El Bandido Runners were out in force again at the weekend, with 18 members taking taking part in the sixth Cross Mar de Pulpi five-kilometre and 10-kilometre races in San Juan de los Terreros on Saturday. There was a sea of El Bandido colours blue and orange among the 162 finishers on a sunny but windy day for the two-lap and four-lap circuits. El Bandidos took five podium places with age group trophies for Kirsty Ratcliffe (first Vet C), Jan Murton and Karen Ayers (first and second in Vet E respectively), Steve Murton and Paul Darcy(also first and second in Vet E re-

spectively) and Duncan Longley (third Vet F). In addition to a trophy, the runners coming first were each presented with a large box of fresh vegetables. The El Bandido members reported it was a very well-organised event, with friendly support and encouragement from runners and marshals on the course, and especially from their own supporters, who were cheering them on. Every runner received a goody bag with a commemorative race t-shirt, and afterwards there was cold beer and paella for everyone.
