THE Costa Almeria was a sea of festive colour at the weekend when many towns and villages staged big carnival processions. The sound of carnival rhythms pulsated through streets across the province as thousands turned out in fancy dress and elaborate costumes to take part in the parades and to make the most of the exuberant atmosphere. Under clear blue skies and in warm spring-like sunshine, revellers danced and shimmied their way through the provincial capital’s centre amid fanciful floats at midday on Sunday, ending up at the amphitheatre for the traditional ‘sobresada’ sausage fiesta. Almeria City Council reported record participation and crowd numbers. “Almeria has once again responded big time to the major effort we have been

making for some years to promote carnival, and it is a tremendous satisfaction to see how children, and adults, have dressed up in style,” commented Culture councillor Diego Cruz. Adra was among the localities which held their main processions on Saturday evening. The town centre was packed as locals and visitors flocked to enjoy the spectacular. The

party continued on into the evening with Mayor Manuel Cortes and the Fiestas and Youth councillors giving out more than €800 in prize money for the best fancy dress. Alvaro Manrique was top individual winner on the night with his highly imaginative candy floss stand get-up. Carnival-goers were also out on the streets of Vera on Saturday for a proces-

sion of carnival troupes in costumes from last year. Vera’s grande carnival finale is being held tomorrow Friday February 28, coinciding with Dia de Andalucia. The parade will end up at Calle del Mar, where temporary seating will be set up to allow the public to enjoy all the troupes’ dances and performances. The grand procession in Cuevas del Al-

manzora is on Saturday February 29. Starting from the multi-purpose warehouse at 5pm, the event will bring together more than 30 carnival clubs. Also from today Thursday February 27 to Saturday February 29 is the distinctly unique Overa carnival. The event’s ‘Mascaras de Camisa’ is included in the Andalucia Intangible Heritage Atlas.

Smart solution to depopulation THE Diputacion de Almeria has set out what it is promoting as a smart way to tackle depopulation in small inland localities. ‘Almeria Smart 2023’ will, the provincial government says, be a roadmap which will enable municipalities to “transform and modernise, improving environmental, economic and social development through new technology,” which will in turn contribute to encouraging people to remain living where they are. Speaking at the recent presentation, Presidency, Depopulation and Tourism deputy Fernando Gimenez said the strategy will be aimed at municipalities

with less than 20,000 inhabitants, and was conceived as a new line of action for dealing with the province’s demographic challenge. He said the plan will “boost quality of life and provide more opportunities and possibilities, with respect for the environment and the efficient management of resources as the background.” He stressed the plan is being drawn up according to principles of “effectiveness, efficiency, sustainability, transparency and participation. “We started on this new road with the involvement of all areas of the Diputacion because we consider that the application of

‘Smart Cities’ technology makes opportunities equal, and therefore fits with the Diputacion’s main objective: the fight against depopulation,” Gimenez said. In terms of time frame, the provincial administration said it would take four months to conclude work on the strategy, with a view to putting the study conclusions into action in 2023. Financing from other administrations will be “essential,” the deputy made clear. He gave examples of subsidies through initiatives like the Junta de Andalucia’s intelligent city programme and the European Regional Development Fund.

Failed break-in AN Almeria court sentenced a man to a suspended one-year prison sentence for a failed break-in in San Juan de los Terreros. HE was found guilty of getting into a property for ‘illegal profit,’ but of getting out before he could steal anything when the alarm went off.

Kids hurt TWO children aged just four and six and two adult men needed hospital treatment for injuries they suffered when two cars went into each other in Almeria City centre. The incident occurred late at night in the Parque Nicolas Salmeron in front of the Casa del Mar.

Run down A 79-YEAR-OLD man died after he was run down on the A-1200 between Antas and Vera last Thursday. A call to 112 alerting the authorities to the incident was put through just after 8pm, the attending emergency services confirming the pensioner had lost his life.

Driver saved FIREFIGHTERS had to rescue a driver who was left trapped in his car after coming off the A-399 road connecting Partaloa and Oria on Friday afternoon. Guardia Civil, Local Police and an emergency health team also rushed to the scene after passing motorists called Emergencias 112 to report the accident.

Fire out THE INFOCA Andalucia wildfire prevention and extinction service reported a fire which broke out in Sierra de Gador in Enix at about 6pm on Friday had been completely put out by midday on Saturday. The flames burnt through a two-hectare area of scrubland.

FEARS GROW GROWING fears about contracting the coronavirus have prompted a run on medical face masks at Spanish pharmacies. As reports of a dozen towns in northern Italy being put on lockdown hit the headlines and a third case of coronavirus was confirmed in Spain this week - an Italian from Lombardy holidaying in Tenerife - concerns about the possibility of the virus spreading in this country mean that pharmacies are running out of stock. The Euro Weekly News spoke to pharmacies up and down the Costas, who confirmed they have completely sold out of medical face masks. Their suggestion, they told EWN, was for members of the public concerned about protecting themselves against the possibility of infection from the coronavirus to put their names down on a waiting list. Another alternative is to try and find a medical face mask supplier online. On Monday the World Health Organisation Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesu said the virus has “pandemic potential,” but added, “Are we there yet? From our assessment, not yet.” “The key message that should give all countries hope, courage

and confidence is that this virus can be contained, indeed there are many countries that have done exactly that,” the WHO chief commented. Meanwhile, by Tuesday morning seven people in Italy had died from the disease and there were reports of at least 229 cases. The spike in infections prompted authorities in the Lombardy and Veneto regions to close schools, universities, businesses and restaurants, and to cancel public gatherings like sporting events. Here in Spain, the government was holding an inter-ministerial commission meeting on Tuesday to discuss the coronavirus and any measures which need to be adopted. “We want to be prepared for any eventuality,” commented Health Minister Salvador Illa. A day earlier the European Union said it was not considering closing internal borders. “Travel or trade restrictions are not recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO) or the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) at the moment,” said EU crisis management commissioner Janez Lenarčič.

Symptoms and advice The main symptoms of the coronavirus are a high temperature, a cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. The WHO advice on basic protective measures is to wash hands frequently with soap or an alcoholbased hand rub, to try and avoid contact with people who are ill, and to avoid touching the eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands. Sneezes and coughs should be caught in a tissue and disposed of. Past virus scares The coronavirus is not the first to cause international concern in recent years. In 2003 the SARS coronavirus affected 26 countries and resulted in more than 8,000 cases. There was also the Ebola scare six years ago, and in November 2015 there was an outbreak of the Zika virus, which started in Brazil and spread to other parts of South and North America, as well as some Pacific islands and Southeast Asia.

Young thieves nicked Accident video jail threat POLICE nicked four youngsters for a break-in at an El Ejido hair salon and the theft of money and electrical appliances. Officers detained two teenagers and a 20-year-old for the actual theft and a 21-year-old for receiving the stolen items. The trio had forced open the salon’s external metal blind and smashed the glass door to get it. One then remained at the entrance to keep an eye out in case they were spotted. After grabbing what they wanted they made a quick getaway. The managed to steal €1,100 in cash and electrical appliances with a combined value of some €1,600. Police investigations led to the three suspects, and shifted focus to the recovery of the stolen items. This led to the fourth detainee. Officers found half the stolen goods in his home.

AN Albox woman could find herself behind bars for sharing a video online of a fatal traffic accident in Arboleas. Guardia Civil launched an investigation after the video of the incident on the A-1204 leading into Albox from the Almanzora highway on January 23 in which two people died was shared on instant messaging service WhatsApp and went viral. The Guardia said it represented “grave harm to the moral integrity of their family members.” In the video one of the accident victims can be seen receiving treatment from a medical team in the final moments of their life. The Almeria Traffic Subsector Traffic Analysis and Report Group (GIAT), looked into the matter, focusing on a woman driver. She faces a possible sentence of between six months and two years in prison. The case is in the hands of a court in Huercal-Overa.

Storm Gloria tax exemption NIJAR Council has declared of special municipal interest the construction of structures and facilities and works carried out in the municipality as a result of the damage wreaked by Storm Gloria in January. The classification means that farmers or anyone affected by the extreme weather events will be exempt from paying municipal taxes stemming from these constructions. The local authority implemented the same measure following the storms back in September. Nijar mayor Esperanza Perez Felices maintained that farmers requesting licences in the wake of the autumn’s extreme weather “have already confirmed the effectiveness of the measure of reducing taxes by the maximum allowed by the law. “We are going to extend this benefit to all those who suffered damage on January 22,” she commented. The measure relates to structures, facilities and works affecting homes, buildings, businesses, commercial, industrial, professional and tourism establishments, greenhouses, agricultural exploitations and woods, or anything similar which was damaged by the storm. Explained Perez Felices, “the range of action is very wide because so many were affected, not only farms. Our aim is that everyone has equal access to the greatest amount of help possible to rebuild what the storms brought down, whether via the subsidies or via exemption from local taxes.”

Gender equality CUEVAS DEL ALMANZORA Council has prepared a programme of events aimed at promoting gender equality for the run-up to International Women’s Day on March 8. Initiatives include an Instagram competition, school workshops and the installation of placards depicting influential women at the Marques de los Velez castle. On Monday March 2 a giant placard bearing the message ‘En igualdad ni un paso atras’ (In equality not one step backwards), will be hung from the town hall balcony. The following day the municipal market will be the venue for a book fair

and gender equality information stand. Events continue on the Friday with the reading out of the International Women’s Day manifesto. For the day itself, Sunday 8, the local authority has organised what will be the fifth Walk for Equality. Hikers will set out at 8.30am for a visit to the Guazamara quarries. Registration is at the municipal sports centre. “As ever, I want to highlight the great work carried out throughout the year at the Social Well-being and Equality department, and especially at our municipal women’s information centre, work which is obvious on the days when we commemorate International

Women’s Day, but which is carried out every day of the year,” Cuevas mayor Antonio Fernandez emphasised at the campaign presentation. “With this presentation I want to make clear our commitment to and work with women. I believe this varied programme is proof of that,” the mayor added. Social Well-being and Equality councillor Melchora Caparros took the opportunity to invite local people to take part in the activities and to find out about the women’s information centre, which has organised the #cuevasporlaigualdad genderequality themed Instagram photography contest for young people.

Cut burglar hunted down

GUARDIA CIVIL tracked down and arrested a burglar just after he broke into a home in Almerimar. A call to the 062 line first alerted the Guardia to a possible robbery at the property. Officers discovered a thief had got over a wall and smashed a window with a stone to reach in and open a door, cutting himself in the process. He left a trail of blood and following the trail, officers came across some of the stolen items. The trail then led them to a nearby garden where they found a man in his 30’s crouched down trying to hide.

Gender violence THE rights of gender-based violence victims were the central topic at an informative initiative organised by the Government Sub-delegation in Almeria. Some 250 professionals attended the event in the provincial capital aimed at providing information on the rights and State-managed services available to women, and their children, who have suffered at the hands of their partners or former partners. The meeting covered topics including Social Security payments, unemployment protection and residency authorisations for foreign-born gender violence victims. “Administrations have to make it easy for women to get out of a violent situation, not only through reporting it, but also allowing them to gain an autonomy which means they can lead their own lives,” Government Sub-delegate Manuel de la Fuente told the participants.

Caught digging

up finds

POLICE caught three metal detector enthusiasts digging up pieces from an Iberian-Roman archaeological site in Gergal. A patrol from the Environment and Heritage Protection Group of the Police Unit Assigned to the Andalucia Autonomous Community in Almeria surprised the trio prospecting for finds without authorisation. Officers found the three had gathered some 70 pieces, including coins and brooches. Police seized detectors, radio equipment, torches, materials to clean the pieces dug up and other materials related to the illegal activities. The three have been charged with breaking an article of the Andalucia Historic Heritage Law, which only allows the controlled use of metal detectors without impacting on historic heritage. Earlier this year police seized nearly 500 items of archaeological interest with no documentation to show their legal origin. Fines for breaking the Andalucia Historic Heritage Law can be as much as €200,000.

Seeking subsidies VERA Council members have voted unanimously in favour of requesting different lines of assistance and subsidies for improving the energy efficiency of municipal exterior lighting. The local authority said the aim is to gain the necessary financing to carry out projects which will reduce CO2 emissions through the implementation of energy saving measures and which will contribute to the development of the local economy and reduce carbon emissions. All the measures which the council plans to carry out are financed 80 per cent by the European Union’s European Regional Development Fund and come under the call for the presentation of low-carbon economy projects from the Ecological Transition Ministry’s IDEA Institute for Energy Diversification and Savings. The idea is to award direct

subsidies to local entities for projects as set out in the EU’s European Regional Development Fund 2014-2020 sustainable growth framework. Vera anticipates the total cost of the municipal projects is nearly €3.9 million. The Diputacion de Almeria is participating on one of the projects. The council explained the first step was to approve what is actually to be carried out. Measures include replacing existing lights with LED technology, the replacement of damaged supports and posts, adapting lighting panels and installing centralised remote management systems. The council pointed out these kinds of measures are the sort of actions set out in so-called SmartCity or Intelligent City strategies, which as well as cutting energy consumption also improve visual quality and road safety.

The local authority put the resulting saving on the municipal electricity bills at more than €250,000 a year. There will be further savings on maintenance and repairing breakdowns as the installations are designed with a 10-year guarantee, the administration said. “The council aim is to replace 100 per cent of the public lighting installations so that Vera residents benefit from more modern and safer illumination on their streets,” commented Deputy Mayor Alfonso Garcia. The deputy mayor also made a point of thanking the provincial administration “for the support and for the great involvement it is going to have in these projects, which undoubtedly demonstrate the clear commitment of the president Javier Javier Aureliano to building a more competitive Almeria involving all the province’s municipalities.”

Fire starter A MIDDLE-AGED man suspected of setting fire to 11 rubbish skips in Tijola in the early hours of the night is under arrest. Guardia Civil working in collaboration with Tijola Local Police detained 44-year-old MRL less than 12 hours after the rubbish bins were torched, following a speedy and intense investigation to identify the perpetrator. He faces charges of causing some €13,000 of damage to the skips and to the window of an uninhabited property.

Energy efficiency IMPROVEMENTS to energy efficiency are set to continue in Mojacar. The council has given the green light to an agreement under which the provincial government will assist on financing municipal projects aimed at moving towards a low-carbon economy as set out in the EU’s European Regional Development Fund 2014-2020 sustainable growth framework, which got underway in Mojacar last year. The local authority is working on different initiatives to modernise and update the locality’s street lighting. The report for the first energy efficiency project 80 per cent financed by FEDER was approved last year. FEDER makes direct subsidies available to local entities for investments in improvements to infrastructure and public services which contribute to cutting carbon dioxide emissions. In 2019 a study to upgrade 1,213 public lighting points was carried out, requiring an investment of some €1.2 million, which would generate a saving on maintenance and energy consumption adding up to €81,200 a year. The comprehensive reform plan included new high performance LED lighting, the replacement of damaged

supports and posts, adapted lighting panels and, centralised remote management systems. The total project amounted to €1,186,910, with an annual energy saving of 60 per cent and a financial saving of more than €70,000. The new agreement with the provincial administration covers 918 light points and a total investment of just over €650,000 and a municipal contribution of just under €33,000; the Diputacion’s contribution reduces the 20 per cent which corresponds to the local authority by 5 per cent. As well as the saving on maintenance and energy bills, the changes will also improve visual quality and road safety, the council said. Energy savings for this year are expected to be more than €100,000. The local authority also said there would be savings on maintenance and repairs thanks to a 10-year guarantee on installations. Mojacar Finance councillor Francisco Garcia Cerda said the objective is to update all public lighting. He said another energy efficiency report for 2021 is currently being prepared which covers all outstanding lighting in the municipality, which represents an investment of just over €1 million.

EMPHASIS: Children and teenagers will play an important part in the International Women’s Day programme of events.

Making a stand HUERCAL-OVERA is making a firm stand in favour of gender equality in March to coincide with the celebration of International Women’s Day. Mayor Francisca Lourdes Fernandez and Equality councillor Maria del Mar Meca have presented details of a packed programme of events to mark the occasion, which are agreed with the local Women’s Association, and with particular emphasis on children and teenagers. The programme starts on Monday March 2 with the presentation of Natalia Ortega’s book ‘Mariposas de Cristal’ (glass butterflies) at 7.30pm at the town hall. The following day there will

be gender equalitythemed storytelling for infants and junior school pupils at the Women’s Centre. On the Wednesday, Mabel Lozano’s 2015 documentary ‘Chicas Nuevas 24 horas’ focusing on the exploitation of women and girls as sex slaves will be shown to students at local institutes. In the evening another documentary by the same director will be screened for an audience aged over 16 at the theatre at 8pm. ‘El Proxeneta’ (the pimp), looks at the true story behind brothels. The progamme will continue on March 5 with a Yoguilates master class at

9.15am in the Parque Municipal. On the Friday five schoolchildren will attend the talk ‘Mujeres sin Limites’ (women without limits) at the cinema. The weekend meanwhile brings a social activity with a trip to the Zujar spa. The International Women’s Day programme will close with the March for Equality on the day itself: a hike setting off from Plaza Mayor at 11.30am, with a hearty paella at the end. The mayor encouraged local residents to take part in the different acts and activities which she said “highlight the importance of equality, with a particular focus on the municipality’s children and youngsters, at the same time as we are promoting coexistence. Race against addictions NIJAR will for the second year in a row host the La Moruna race to raise funds for the fight against addictions. The event will take place on Sunday April 26, the local authority has announced. Participants will either run or walk a 16.6-kilometre route between Isleta de Moro and the Monsul beach in the Cabo de Gata Natural Park. Walkers will set off at 9am and runners at 10am. The race is organised by the non-profit Nuevo Rumbo association in collaboration with Nijar Council. Nuevo Rumbo has worked within the field of drug dependencies and dealing with the related problems among young people and their families since 1985. Speaking at the event presentation, Nijar mayor Esperanza Perez Felices highlighted the importance of these kinds of initiatives.

“It is essential to give visibility to however many actions are carried out to combat addictions and the extent of the drama they represent for many families,” the mayor commented. “On this matter the government team is going to firmly collaborate on information, prevention, support and dissemination of programmes, and we want to thank the Nuevo Rumbo association for their daily work in our municipality,” she added. Perez Felices also underlined what she described as her administration’s “genuine interest in promoting the practice of sport, physical activity and a healthy lifestyle in our municipality.” Registration for the La Moruna will remain open right up until the day of the race via the undernoted website. www.cruzandolameta.es

AROUND 20 people took to the slopes in snowshoes for an Adra Council organised hike in a mountain region on the AlmeriaGranada border. Guided by four monitors, the group enjoyed the combination of serious exercise, bracing mountain air and spectacular scenery of the Puerto de la Ragua. The five-kilometre route across the snowy landscape took around three hours, and was, the participants reported, “a lovely experience” and “a great adventure.” The Adra local authority walking programme contines on Sunday March 1 with a 10-kilometre walk to Trevelez in the Granada Alpujarra mountain region. The trip is open to participants aged 10 years and above, the council said, and will set off from the Adra Red Cross at 8am. THIS week sees one of the biggest and most exciting celebrations in the region. Every February 28 the Andalucians celebrate ‘Dia de Andalucia,’ a holiday where you will see in many municipalities and cities residents dressed up, balconies decorated with flowers and bunting and green-and-white flags of Andalucia. Cultural events are often held in conjunction with the day and in some towns, especially in the Malaga area, schools are closed for a Semana Cultural also known as Semana Blanca. Each year, the Friday before is often a day of celebration in schools with a traditional Andalucian breakfast, consisting of a slice of toast with a thin layer of olive oil and orange juice; students colour pictures that refer to the symbols and insignia of Andalucia, its history and customs, put on plays and sing the regional anthem, the Himno de Andalucia. The day of celebration began after the foundations of Andalucian autonomy were established in Antequera, on February 28, 1980, when the polls were taken to the streets for citizens to take part in a referendum after being held back by the Franco dictatorship for 44 years. The honorary title of the ‘Favourite Son of Andalucia’ is granted by the Junta to those whose exceptional merits are recognised to have resulted in the benefit of the region, for their work or scientific, social or political actions. It is the highest distinction of the Autonomous Community of Andalucia. Previous winners of the accolade have been novelist, José Manuel Caballero, artist Florencio Aguilera Correa and of course, actor, Antonio Banderas.

Man still missing NEARLY three weeks after a British man went missing from the Torrecardenas hospital in Almeria City on February 8 there is still no sign of him. Sarah Lamble told the Euro Weekly News the UK

Consulate in Malaga had informed her that Gareth Richard Brayley was in a minor car accident on February 5 on the way between Almeria airport and Mojacar and was taken to the Torrecardenas as he seemed disoriented. Three days later he walked out. Adding to Sarah’s distress, a representative from a car rental company at Almeria airport has since seeing the report about Gareth on the EWN website and social media contacted her to say she saw him before he went to the hospital, and he had no baggage, no phone charger and none of his medication. Gareth appears to have the onset of dementia and so is vulnerable. Gareth was born in 1946. He is just over six foot, with blue eyes. Bridge work WORKS have started on repairs to the bridge going over the river Adra and are set to take six months to complete, according to the Sub-delegation of the Government in Almeria. The access to Adra from the Puente del Rio district will therefore be cut off to traffic until mid-August while measures are put in place to make the infrastructure safer for both pedestrians and vehicles. The €1 million project includes widening the pavement and creating more space between pedestrians and vehicles. The surface will also be reinforced to improve safety and the aesthetics of the structure.

Celebrating traditional craft HUERCAL-OVERA will be celebrating a traditional Costa Almeria craft next month with an event focusing on the skill of bobbin lace making. The local council and the Asociacion La Cuna del Bolillo are currently finalising the details of what will be the 12th edition of the ‘Encuentro de Encajeras de Bolillo,’ set to be staged in the Plaza Mayor on Saturday March 7. The gathering will bring together bobbin lace makers from all over the province and from other regions of Spain, including Murcia, Alicante, Malaga, Granada, Albacete and Jaen. The local authority said the event will provide an opportunity for craftspeople to exchange ideas, but also for members of the public to find out more about the skill. The programme will get underway at 9am with a reception and breakfast of typical home-made foods for the participants. This will be followed by bobbin lace making demonstrations, as well as music and dance with a live performance

The €450,000 cost of the works was financed by the Almeria administration and the council. Carlos Perez-Urruti expressed enormous gratitude for Huercal-Overa’s recognition of the Marine Infantry on behalf of the force. “From today the name of Huercal-Overa will be forever united to the Marine Infantry,” he told the audience.

Safe school run action

CREATING safer and more fluid access to local schools is the main objective of an Adra Council works project. The local authority reported it has already implemented a range of measures under the Adra ‘Caminos Esocolares Seguros’ (Safe school walks) initiative to increase safety for some 3,300 children en route to and from school. It has installed more than 70 vertical pedestrian way signs and more than 80 school route signs, along with horizontal footstep markers every 25 metres. There are new circular speed limit signs and eight vertical illuminated signals to improve visibility on some paths. The council has created 20 new pedestrian crossings and a further 100 are being adapted to

make them more visible. The local administration has also installed around a dozen retractable bollards to allow for reordering of traffic at specific times near school entrances and to prevent collapse at drop off and pick up times, and some 50 reflectors. The first phase of the €100,000 investment is concentrated on the five schools with the highest numbers of pupils and therefore the greatest difficulties in terms of traffic volume, the council said. Adra mayor Manuel Cortes underlined the importance of the measures during a recent visit to some of the works, where he was joined by the Economic Development, Education and Safety and Mobility councillors Carmen B Lopez, Pedro Peña and Patricia Berenguel.

“Thanks to this project our town is advancing in the promotion of child autonomy and road safety, reinforcing the safety of journeys to school, providing specific signposting and the necessary access measures,” Cortes said. “These works will allow our children to go to their respective education centres more safely at the same time as improving traffic flow, and we are making way for more sustainable urban mobility using of non-motorised vehicles,” he added. The Adra ‘Caminos Esocolares Seguros’ (Safe school walks) project comes under the ‘Adra Ciudad 2020’ Sustainable Urban Development Strategy, which is financed 80 per cent by the European Regional Development Fund and 20 per cent by the local council.

Countdown on to review UK pension options before Brexit After four years of uncertainty, we can now expect Brexit to start taking effect after the transition period ends on 31 December 2020. While nothing should change for UK nationals living in Spain until then, the countdown is on to prepare. Once the UK sheds its EU obligations - including freedom of movement for capital - the government gains more scope to tax UK nationals abroad. Pensions are a likely target. Transferring your pension abroad Residents in Spain can currently move UK pensions to a Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS) free of any personal tax. Doing this can unlock several advantages, such as consolidating several pensions under one roof, gaining flexibility to take your pension in the currency you need, and

freedom to pass benefits to heirs other than your spouse. Once transferred, funds would be protected from UK lifetime allowance charges, as well as future changes to UK pension rules. However, the UK imposes tax penalties of 25% on transfers to a QROPS outside the EU/European Economic Area (EEA). There are expectations that the UK may widen this taxation net to include EU/EEA-based QROPS once the transition period ends in

December. This could be easily done since the UK legislation is already drafted to catch all pension transfers; the government would just need to remove the EU/EEA exclusion to make this happen. As such, time may be limited to transfer without tax penalties. Pension transfers can take several months to process, so if you decide that transferring is right for you, act soon. The benefits of a QROPS can vary greatly between providers and jurisdictions, however, so take specialist advice to navigate the complex options and determine the most suitable solution for you. Leaving your pensions in the UK Of course, you could do nothing and access your UK pension from Spain. If you have a ‘defined contribution’ (‘money purchase’) pension, current options include taking

cash, receiving a regular income (drawdown) or purchasing a lifetime income (annuity). You cannot usually access ‘defined benefit’ (‘final salary’) pensions as cash; instead you receive a regular income throughout retirement. While you could transfer to a defined contribution scheme for more flexible access, this is likely to be less beneficial than receiving a guaranteed income for life. Note that UK pension payments are usually only paid in Sterling. If you are living in Spain and your spending is in Euros, you could find that conversion fees and the variable exchange rate reduces the value of your pension income. Remember also that UK pensions remain subject to UK rules, which can change at any time. UK funds are also vulnerable to lifetime allowance penalties of 25%/55% when combined pension benefits exceed £1.055 million.

Your pension is likely to be central to your long-term financial security, so it is crucial to proceed with care and take regulated advice. An adviser with cross-border expertise is best placed to help you establish the best approach for you and your family’s particular situation in Spain. While there is no one-size-fits all answer for what to do with your pension, everyone can benefit from reviewing their arrangements as early as possible in 2020, before Brexit reshapes the landscape. The aim of the entities involved in the six participating countries was to clock up enough kilometres between them to cover the distance between Earth and the moon. Cuevas added 4,425 kilometres to the project. Eight other provincial municipalities also did their bit towards achieving last year’s overall total of 150,240 kilometres. The local authority in Benalmadena on the Costa del Sol came up with the concept of the walking challenge in 2016 as a way to address and help prevent obesity and sedentary lifestyles, all participants doing a fivekilometre walk on the same day at the same time to highlight the value of sport.

What to do in the event of an emergency in Spain Living in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics.

IN Spain there are two groups which most people would understand as being ‘the police.’ The National Police (Policía Nacional) who have jurisdiction in the towns and cities and the Guardia Civil outside the towns and cities. The Local Police are employed by town halls; they basically deal with property found, and enforce local laws. Whilst they have a power of arrest, when exercised they must take the arrested person to the National Police or Guardia Civil according to where the crime t o o k place. National Police and the Guardia Civil deal with all crimes, missing persons etc in their jurisdiction. The National Police also deal with all applications for immigration paperwork, NIEs, EU Citizens Registration and for non EU nationals, Residencia, etc. Throughout Europe the general number for all emergencies is 112. In Spain the operators speak English, French, German and Italian, in addition to Spanish and will liaise with the emergency services when the caller does not speak Spanish. No area code is needed and the number can be called from any phone, including

mobiles even those without a Spanish SIM card or any credit. You can also fax or SMS 112. The 24 hours national emergency numbers for Spanish speakers are: 091 - police, 061 - health emergencies 080 - firefighters. By calling 902 102 112, one can give details of certain crimes, including:burglaries, car theft, theft or loss of documents or belongings. The service is available in English 9am to 9pm seven days a week, and 9am to 3pm in French, German and Italian. Having given details, you must go to the National Police station which you nominate, within 48 hours to make the report using the information supplied on the telephone. In the case of robbery, where threat or force has been used, victims should call 112 for police attendance, or go to the police station to make a report. Other useful number are - 016, to report instances of gender violence. For problems at sea, the Maritime Rescue Service (Salvamento Seguridad Maritmo) can be contacted on 900 202 202, and the Red Cross (Cruz Rojo) on 902 222 292. There is also a Red Cross 24-hour helpline 900 100 333.

EASTER POSTER NOW UNVEILED HUERCAL-OVERA has unveiled the municipal Easter Week celebrations poster, which this year has been designed by the Paso Negro association. Speaking at last week’s presentation at the town hall, Heritage councillor Jose Lopez said the image is a bit of a departure from past years. “The characteristic embroidery in golds and silks which distinguish our Easter, and are a clear example of the influence of Lorca, the Levante and of Cartagena, are highlighted through the figure of a penitent,” he explained. Lopez reported that the council is currently working on the Easter Week preparations and continues to collaborate with the Paso Negro and the municipality’s three other Easter associations, “not only with financial contributions, but

also in the installation of terracing to watch the processions and acts, the lighting of our streets, the decoration of our streets and plazas, and to which has to be added the assignment of festival marquees and support and collaboration on other activities.” Paso Negro president Jose Uribe said the poster presentation represented the start of the countdown to Easter and encouraged residents and visitors to be part of celebrations “worthy of admiration.” Two representatives of the commission responsible for creating this year’s poster were also at the presentation. Salvador Asensio and Jose Luis Gomez said they had decided to go for something different from previous Easters. The photograph by Joaquin Zamora featured in the design, which

came from the council archive, shows “the emotion and devotion of this Nazarene looking at the spectator, with the visual impact, the play of colours and a direct look,” they commented. Mayor Francisca Lourdes Fernandez congratulated the Paso Negro for a poster which she said shows the sentiment, devotion and faith of Huercal-Overa residents. She particularly called on the younger generations to participate in the Easter Week events, affirming “it will continue to be what it is if we all play an active part.” HuercalOvera’s Easter Week is among the largest and most important in the province and has had national Fiesta of Tourist Interest status since 1983. The Easter programme will officially get underway on Saturday March 14.

Tax office on the move THE Mojacar tax collection office has moved, the local authority has announced. The office is now located at the Paseo de la Marina, number one, in the Marina de la Torre urbanisation fronting the sea on the road to Garrucha.

The council said it hopes the move will make it easier for taxpayers to make use of the facilities, improving customer service and accessibility. The office caters to residents not only of Mojacar, but also of Bedar, Turre and Los Gallardos. Opening hours are 9am to 2pm.

PROGRESS: The Parks and Gardens councillor maintains the local authority is improving the care and maintenance of municipal parks and garden areas.

PRUNING TIME THE Adra Council plan to reinforce parks and gardens maintenance is moving forward with the pruning of all the municipal trees. Pruning in residential neighbourhoods and around schools has already been done, and is now moving on to the seafront and the town centre. Efforts will then be directed at palm trees. At the same time 100 or so trees and palms are being treated for pests and disease using endotherapy. The local authority explained this involves injecting a product into the trunks, which it says is “an effective method, which at the same time respects the environment.” The Parks and Gardens and the Sustainable Development and Energy Ef-

ficiency councillors Jose Crespo and Antonio Sanchez have been to take a look at how the pruning and maintenance efforts are coming along in zones including the Parque del Puerto, one of the most popular outdoor locations with locals. “We believe it is very important to make an effort to care for all the surroundings, including the trees, taking specific care to ensure they are in good condition,” the Parks and Gardens councillor commented. The local administration is, Crespo maintained, “driving the gradual improvement of the care of our town’s green and garden areas. “To make this a reality we have increased the

human and material resources thanks to an investment of nearly €130,000, which demonstrates the clear will to advance in the provision of quality basic services by the government team led by Manuel Cortes,” he affirmed. Parks and garden maintenance in Adra is the responsibility of council employed workers, currently in coordination with the additional support of a private company in order to “increase the effectiveness of the service to the benefit of residents,” the council says. In addition to maintenance, pruning and pest and disease control, the contract covers matters like irrigation systems, lawn care, soil fertilisation and cleaning.

THE European Banking Federation (EBF) to which the Spanish Banking Association belongs has asked the European Commission to require that large corporations should be obliged to reveal environmental in­ formation and climate risk from their activities. The end of the Paper £20 IN the days when public organisations were not as environmentally aware, the disposal of old, damaged or obsolete bank notes in the UK saw them being bur ned in a fur nace to help heat the Bank of England building. No one’s laughing now

WHY is everyone still screaming that Britain needs more diversity? The UK is now recognised as one of the most diverse nations on the planet. Instead of wasting energy by constantly complaining, why don’t those affected welcome this situation with open arms and start acting with some positivity? As Shakespeare observed; ‘Methinks thou doth protest too much.’ I can’t help becoming even more convinced that those who continue to condemn British society actually thrive on animosity, refusing to accept the truth in case they are deprived of something to vent their hatred on! Let’s just have a brief look at these ‘lack of UK diversity’ accusations. To date, with very few exceptions, every family based commercial on British TV depicts a mixed marriage. Practically all the ads that use a number of actors, portray an (often ludicrous) cross section of casts with ethnic backgrounds. Neither of these situations is a true reflection of life across the UK and is therefore either a minority appeaser, or some form of majority brainwashing - and is also by its very definition blatantly racist! A large number of major league football

Athletes, particularly runners, are almost all from immigrant heritage and any accusation of racism (predominately aimed at the indigenous population) is dropped on by the law like a ton of bricks. The long suffering British population has bent over backwards to accept and encourage diversity into a country which, after recovering from two World Wars, became open and ready to accept

many from other less fortunate cultures. But to see its generosity and welcome rewarded by ‘no go areas,’ terrorism, religious fanaticism, culture attack and nothing but insults and ingratitude - is quite understandably getting large numbers of them the terrible hump! The ‘far right’ was initially blamed as instigators of this UK dissent, and was quite rightly chastised for it. Unfortunately, with the blatant, unchecked reversed racism of ‘comedi-

ans’ like Nish Kumar, plus the disgraceful racist lyrics and comments of ‘Rapper Dave’ at the awful Brit awards, exponents of the not-so far right are actually beginning to think those a bit ‘further over’ may have had a point. Last week the Bafta awards were also criticised for not including enough diversity among the winners. Well, possibly there weren’t enough who were worthy of awards! We cannot fall into the trap of favouring people simply because of their ethnic heritage or gender. If we do, we will not only lower our standards, but also be in real danger of provoking even further disquiet by denying recognition of those who may be far more deserving. This whole diversity and ‘snowflake’ driven human rights situation is sowing seeds of discontent that, if unchecked, will continue to grow and flourish into a full scale civil conflict that could leave large sections of the UK’s major cities resembling Beirut. B A C K i n t h e U K re c e n t l y, I was sitting on a train, staring at the man opposite me. Not i n t h a t w a y, p ro m i s e ! I n a looking-at-what-he-was-absentmindedly-doing way. He was a leg-jiggler (and if that was you, suffering from a debilitating illness, my apologies in advance). Less prevalent than manspreaders, for whom I've developed subtle strategies, but up there with bulky bags on the free seat, fold-up bikes and elbow-jabbing texters. Back in the day I used to go to the cinema with a beefy, heavilybuilt leg-jiggler who was on the Spectrum (it’s a symptom, I understand). The embarrassing thing was that the whole row of seats would start vibrating in the darkness, mak-

ing me wonder what the heck people were making of it all... And strategies for man-spreaders? First carefully study your spreader. If he’s a clear threat or simply obese, then abort; your project’s derailed. Now, catching your target offguard may work, as women almost never react or do anything in this situation. Above all, don’t give way - ideally a bag or something similar acting as a firm buffer between you, as insistent female proximity to a leg will invariably end up with him thinking he’s being hit on. All this can lead to a silent pressure battle between the pair of you until one backs down. Not the best solution, admittedly. Other more complex strategies I’ll keep to myself ... we won’t go down that track. Train travel can truly be a bizarre experience. A friend and I boarded a packed train and managed to find seats facing a couple of millennials. At first, they seemed really annoyed we were actually sitting there - in unreserved seats. But then the young woman clearly made

I even heard her whisper to her mate we were “in their space.” Perhaps we should have issued them with a ‘trigger warning’ before sitting down? What do you think? The Check-in Scan app was present at Fitur 2020, the second time in as many years it has been present at the event, with its own stand in the Business and Technology Pavilion Check-in Scan, the most downloaded application for checking in guests at tourism establishments, was again present at the Madrid international tourism show in January, following the success of its appearance at the previous edition of the event. Once more, it held demonstrations of the app to any interested parties who approached its stand. THE impact and recognition bestowed by Fitur are clear to see: internationally, it is considered one of the most important events in the tourism sector in Spain. This year, there has been a special focus on the theme of ‘tourism of the future.’ When we think of the future, one cannot help but think of the new technologies that streamline management and provide security. As at the time of this new edition of the event, the application had seen a 145 per cent increase in downloads compared with the previous year. There was also an increase in the number of visitors to its stand, with a number of visits this year from clients to praise the work of the team. Curiously, we mention the visit of users who have attended the event exclusively to meet with the Check-in Scan team. We also emphasise the support provided by the Mijas City Council for the start-up with its registered office in Mijas,

Malaga. The mayor and part of the governance team visited the stand with the local press. Benjamin Smith, the CEO of Check-in Scan, states that there has been “an increase of 27 per cent in the number of potential clients compared with the previous edition. The increase in awareness of the need to comply with legal regulations has been palpable. The aim of Check-in Scan is to enable them to comply with these regulations and help them avoid the headache that this presents,” he continues. “We have received a number of visits from users who already knew us or who had

received recommendations. Specifically, one person at the event told us that he had been told very good things about us from different sources and that when references are good from a number of sources, that is a sign of a good system, so he decided to visit us,” says Rocío Rodríguez, the head of Marketing at Check-in Scan. “It is very good to see first-hand the fruits of the business at this type of event.” For Check-in Scan, Fitur is an event not to be missed at which each year it provides information about new developments and demonstrates how the application operates. Equipped with the best security and data privacy technology, it also has other functions for all types of procedures: it can pre-check-in guests to anticipate details, allow guests to check themselves in, import reservations from PMS via the iCal system, and so much more. Hotel, guesthouse, hostel, campsite, holiday let and rural accommodation managers only need a mobile handset onto which to download the application, which is available from Google Play and Apple Store. With the app, they will be able to check-in their guests in total freedom and comfort.

SHOPPING SPREE DEAR Euro Weekly, What a pleasure to read about the lucky lady who won the queen for a day shopping prize in Torremolinos. She was such a character in the video you posted on your Facebook page, it must really have made a difference in her life. I do worry about her booking a trip to China though! At least she will get the full run of the plane as I’m sure it will be empty. I hope she has a lovely time visiting her son. A firm hand Dear EWN, Somebody recently wrote in about moving back to London and being worried about the violence. I understand the reasons for going back but it did make me think, I have never in my time in Spain seen any violence. No robberies, no gangs and no knives. I feel safe here than in my home town. I do understand that the police take a pretty strong stance when it comes to catching people in the act ‘a heavy hand’ and maybe that is what should happen in the UK. By all means, if my son had committed a crime I wouldn’t mind if the police gave him a slap round the ear or a kick up the bum. Would that slow down the kids in the UK? I guess it comes down to respect, the kids in Spain respect and fear the police, whereas the people in the UK have lost their respect for the police. Is there any way back? Power of equality MORE controversy has hit the recent awards ceremonies, this time in the world of music. Long-running music magazine NME and the Brit awards are both in the headlines with claims and acts of misogyny and sexism. With more women than ever displaying success in the music industry, artists like Charli XCX and Ella Eyre have hit out at the event for having male and female nominees competing in separate categories. Charli XCX criticised the ceremony for making the women feel like a ‘subplot’ or ‘warm-up act’ for their male counterparts. The Album of the Year category helps to show further evidence of the situation by not featuring a single female nominee, as Harry Styles and Lewis Capaldi go up against Stormzy, Michael Kiwanuka, and Dave for the accolade. The situation at the NME awards was a new low for the business. With British rapper, Slowthai set to win the ‘Hero of the Year’ award he shot himself in the foot by quickly disgracing himself and making leering comments to host and comic Katherine Ryan on stage. The incident provoked an audience member to heckle Slowthai as ‘misogynist’ during his acceptance speech to which the rapper responded by throwing his drink into the crowd and almost starting a fight. These high profile incidences are a reminder of the need for music industry mindfulness and vigilance.

SPAIN is cracking down on badly behaved Brits who could face £50k fines So some 18­year­old lads arrive in Spain on their first ever time abroad, on an all­inclusive holiday that cost €200 (because the hotel is garbage). Straight to the bar and G&Ts. A cheap local paint stripper gin served up in a measure four times as big as anything they’ve ever experienced. They drink three drinks each, not that much, and are drunk and puke in the flower bed. Everyone screams scumbags. Yes the Brits overdo it, of course they do, but the Spanish have designed these resorts around it, the people of Ibiza and Mallorca have become massively wealthy because of it. If your to-do list never seems to get any shorter, the stress from your hectic life may be taxing your body. Several studies show that chronic stress triggers the release of free radicals, the unstable molecules that damage cells and are responsible for ageing. Instead of trying to do it all try concentrating on one task at a time and only moving on once you finish it. You spend most of the day sitting. People who spend most days in a chair are at increased risk for kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, and cancer, not to mention obesity. Exercising regularly helps to prevent these health issues and keeps you living longer. Study

participants who exercised 150 minutes or more a week lived 10 to 13 years longer than the inactive bunch. You don't use eye cream. Skin around the eyes is thinner than the skin on the rest of your face and shows age faster. Keeping the eye area moisturised can take years off your face. Important factors include emollients, antioxidants, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin C. These promote formation of collagen and elastin to tighten the skin and reduce fine lines around the eyes. TO HELPING OTHERS INTRODUCTION Dear Readers, I AM super excited to be here to welcome you to my new column covering topics surrounding Life Coaching and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. I was a 41-year-old mum and wife who suffered some very dark times, I decided that it was time to heal my wounds and start living life rather than just exist. After reading many self development books such as; You are a badass, The universe has your back, The Secret, and studying Life Coaching and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy I found

that there was light at the end of the tunnel. At first, this was purely for selfish reasons, It was time for me. As I progressed, I noticed that there were others who were in either the same or similar situations, and it was in that moment I knew I had to help. I started off small, offering my services to a few wonder ful clients whom have since become great friends. To w i t n e s s t h e i r l i g h t b u l b moments and watch them heal before my eyes gave me such a warm sense of gratitude. I continued with further courses and began to grow my business. After recent events in the media regarding the beautiful Caroline Flack, I felt I needed to do more. The

news of her death reminded me that mental health is still a major issue that needs to be addressed and I knew I had to speak out! So, here I am! Ready to serve you! MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED MY name is Willow - I am a 28-year-old mother living and working on the Costa del Sol. I’m here wanting to tell you my story of survival and what it’s like living with a mental illness. I’m hoping that by telling you my story and the challenges I go through on a daily basis it will not only inspire you but also give you that little bit of HOPE to carry on fighting this uphill battle and to not feel alone. I’ve suffered from it for most of my life. Looking back I can pinpoint exactly when I knew that I was different. I now look back and gently laugh at all the people who thought I had the perfect life, that I was a young, talented and bubbly person. Unbeknownst to them, I was terrorised by my demons. Having been diagnosed with Bipolar and Anxiety disorder nearly six years ago, I know that there is not one aspect of my life that has gone untouched by this mental illness. My bipolar and anxiety disorder were triggered by a sexual attack which took place eight years ago. A few weeks after the attack, it had all just gotten too much and I decided to end my life - I was too tired to carry on fighting. I was found by my mum and dad with minutes left to spare and rushed by ambulance to hospital. I was quizzed about why did I want to take my life, that I had a loving family, I was young and had my whole life ahead of me. I could see people looking at me and thinking … Why? The truth is, when you hit such a low point, you don’t think about anyone else, you don’t feel. I felt numb, I didn’t care about anything. For months after the attack, I suffered horrific nightmares and I was unable to sleep alone. I obsessively thought I was being followed or looked at. I suffered panic attacks on a daily basis. I lost all ability to concentrate or even complete simple tasks, often feeling disoriented, forgetting where, or who I was. I felt as if I had completely lost my mind. For a time, I managed to keep it together on the outside trying not to show

what I was going through, but it’s simply the worst thing you can do, you lose control on reality. What is real? Who is real? You end up believing your own lies. You convince yourself you’re okay when you are not. I started self harming, thinking that if I hurt myself harder than my thoughts were hurting me, then maybe I couldn’t be hurt. The horrifying thing is, I found relief in self harming, not realising the damage it does to you. Not only are you left with scars on your skin, but the damage it does to you psychologically is the deepest scar of all. With several hospital visits and stays in different psychiatric wards I was diagnosed with reactive depression and Borderline Personality Disorder due to the sexual attack I had suffered. I slowly gained trust in the doctors, I was able to tell them what was happening, how I was feeling, not realising that I had actually been suffering way before the sexual attack took place. Taking medication and undergoing therapy marked the turning point in recovering from my mental breakdown. For me there is no cure, no final healing. I will never be free of bipolar. BUT there are things that I can do to ensure that I never have to suffer as I did before being diagnosed. I’m no longer a prisoner of my illness and I would not be here today had I not had the proper diagnosis and treatment. The most important thing to know is that it’s never too late to seek help and speak out. Nobody should suffer alone with this There are still days I simply do not function and there are relapses that set me back. But I have got to know myself, know my mind and know the triggers. I have my little daily routines that I have to stick to which allow me to lead a normal life. I’ve also learnt than on the days it gets too much for me, to give in, there is no harm in telling yourself to stop, slow down, ride through it as best as you can. Everything in this life is passing. Just ride it out. Before you know it, you wake up and it’s a new day, a new dawn. Just hold on, hold to that little bit of hope and don’t let go of it. GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY IN the words of the inimitable Andy Williams, where do I begin? Perhaps allow me to give a brief insight into my life, a life that’s been colourful, to say the least. Filled with drama, some of it good, and of course some bad. It was the late 90’s, I was living between London and my native Dublin, a time when it seemed that life for a 23-yearold me, was filled with little other than party filled nights, and long recovery lunches at places like Daphne’s, San Lorenzo or the now defunct Oriel on Sloane Square. Oriel was our HQ, a place where we would inevitably meet up to dissect the previous night, before making plans for the next. In a way, we were the original Made in Chelsea, except less scripted and without a camera crew. My circle of friends were living a similar existence, showing up at various glamorous events, night after night, photographed for Bystander or the Daily Mail, falling into an awaiting car, to dance until dawn at Annabel’s, The Met Bar, or L’Equipe Anglais. I’d return to Dublin in search of R&R, only to find there was none. Dublin, like London was buzzing, and set to embark on a period of time known as the Celtic Tiger. A glorious time of excess on every level, where it was seen as normal to down cases of vintage Bollinger over lunch, before nipping, or possibly tripping to Gucci to pick up something new for the night ahead. It was all good fun, for a select few, who called each other la famiglia. One night at a party during London Fashion Week, I was chatting with my dear friend, the late Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, who had just signed a contract with the Sunday Times to write a weekly diary style column. The idea being, her antics would be available for readers to enjoy in full colour, complete with a photo at some event or another. She joked it would be the perfect job for me and within weeks, I was contacted by the editor of the Irish edition of the paper, asking if I would consider writing a similar style diary

Once thrust into the media spotlight, my life spiralled somewhat and while PR firms wanted me to be seen promoting their clients - from sports cars, to designer goods and such, I became so inundated, that I required an agent in Ireland as well as the UK. For many it was hard to believe that the guy who was so in demand and apparently the life and soul of the party, was in fact terribly shy and somewhat lost. It was at this time that I went down a wrong road and began taking cocaine, as a way to counteract my shyness and be ‘on form’ 24/7. Without realising it, my drug habit had taken over my life and at the height of my fame I was taking up to four grams of coke a day, not eating and drinking way too much alcohol. Not exactly a good place to be considering how public my life had become. I took part in numerous reality TV shows; Young Posh & Loaded on ITV1, Celebrity Five Go Dating on Channel 4, Celebrity Farm on RTE 1, to name a few. All of which, apart from The Farm, were and remain a total blur. Subsequently, my world came crashing down due to my addiction and I landed in rehab. Following which, I vanished from the scene and lived in Italy, France and more recently Monaco. I am clean of drugs since 2003, and have written a novel, opened a restaurant and taken time to discover who I am and what makes me happy. This time last year, I decided that Marbella may be a place that would be a good fit. One year on, and I must say, each day it makes me smile. I believe it still has much to show me, and I have much to show it. I shall be writing a weekly column for Euro weekly News starting next week, so I have returned to do something I love. All policies are different so check with your provider. What are your travel options? If you want to cancel your trip and don’t think you’ll be covered by your travel insurance,

it’s worth checking with your tour operator or airline. They can provide advice on your holiday and what plans they have in place to help. You may have options like changing your destination to somewhere safer, or your trip dates. In the circumstances, travel providers may be more flexible in facilitating amendments. Don’t forget to update your travel insurance. If you don’t want to travel at all and don’t plan to make a claim, you may be able to get a refund on your travel insurance, even if it’s after the ‘cooling off period.’ Check the cancellation terms of your holiday. Don’t leave things to the last minute. A walk through the emotions

A NEW exhibition at the Diputacion de Almeria Alfareros art gallery offers ‘A walk through the emotions’ with the works of painter Rosario Garcia Mora. The colourful paintings by ‘Charini,’ as the artist is commonly known, are designed to provoke emotions and sensations. Andalucian folklore and the aesthetics of flamenco are a clear influence. “They show different facets of my life, for which I have used my creativity and my free inspiration,” the artist commented on the collection. Speaking at the exhibition inauguration Culture and Cinema deputy Manuel Guzman took the opportunity to stress the provincial government aims to “make institution public spaces available to Almerian creative people so they can exhibit their works and their creativity.” The gallery in Calle Alfareros in Almeria City is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 2pm and from 6-9pm. The Charini exhibition runs until March 4.

Charting shipwreck history

Slam in the Lamb I’VE cooked and eaten a lot of veg lately. I’ve even had a couple of my carnivorous friends tell me I’ve been letting down the flesh eaters. Well, this week I returned to meat in a big way. I’ve had some tasty fried chicken and also indulged my love for offal with some devilled kidneys and crispy fried pigs ears with a spicy mayo. But most popular in my house was lamb chops (chuletas) with seared lettuce and peas. The creamy Dijon mustard and crème fraiche sauce made a change from gravy with lamb. Season the lamb chops with salt and pepper and put under a hot grill. Cook for two or three minutes on each side until they are to your liking. Then keep warm. Heat a pan until hot and then add some olive oil and put in two little gem lettuces that have been quartered lengthways. Using lettuce as

a cooked vegetable is a good idea and one I am adopting! Sear the lettuce until charred on all sides. Add about 250ml of beef stock. Bring to the boil then turn down to simmer. Add a cup of frozen peas and some torn fresh mint. Once

reduced by about half, add a small cube of butter, a large dollop of crème fraiche (or double cream if feeling carefree and indulgent!) and a teaspoon of Dijon mustard. Season to taste and pour over the chops. Finish with some more fresh mint and enjoy.

THERE is still time to catch a fascinating exhibition charting the history of shipwrecks and events on the high seas in Almeria at Vera’s Victoria convent. The ‘Naufragios y sucesos en el Mar de Almería. Siglo XIX’ exhibition features a series of lighthouse and nauticalthemed models and teacher and artist Emilio Sanchez Guillermo’s drawings of lighthouses in Almeria and around the world. Also on display are 10 historical documents from the Vera municipal archive enlarged into large format, and dozens of informative panels designed by Vera Historical Museum director and archaeologist Domingo Ortiz. The exhibition complements a 600-page book of the same name by historian Angel Carralero and Carboneras Mesa Roldan lighthouse keeper Mario Sanz. The lengthy tome explains in great detail how the sea in south-east Spain has been the setting for important, but less well known historical events. They range from piracy and smuggling to the consequences of wars and conflicts, and which are documented in Spanish historical archives. Commenting at the exhibition inauguration and book presentation, Carralero said it was a historical theme which is “difficult to study and reference.” The historian explained this was due to the “wide dispersion of the documentation consulted, as during the first years of the 19th century the scarcity of general informative newspapers left large gaps, unlike in the latter years when the archive information was complemented by numerous stories in the press.” Vera Culture councillor Maria Manuela Caparros, who inaugurated the exhibition, said that the book provides a detailed account of “the events in which men and the sea were the main players” in an often unequal struggle. The exhibition runs until Saturday February 29. Open 9.30am to 1.30pm weekdays and 11am to 1.30pm on Saturday.

Works done and dusted WORKS on the road connecting Albanchez and Rambla Aljibe in Lubrin are now done and dusted, the Diputacion de Almeria reported. The provincial administration update project for the AL-6107 involved adapting the highway to the current volume of traffic, and included resurfacing and improving drainage. The road had been in a somewhat deteriorated condition due to the passage of time and the effects of the weather. The €200,000 investment in the project came under the Diputacion’s Provincial Highway Plan for modernising Almeria’s roads and making them safer for motorists. Commenting during a recent visit alongside Albanchez mayor Amador Lopez to see the results of the investment, Diputacion Public Works deputy Oscar

Liria remarked “the improvement is evident, and will impact directly on the safety and comfort of all users of this road.” The deputy maintained that the provincial administration’s “top concern is to provide more and better services to all municipalities and to make opportunities equal among Almerians, wherever they live, and in this respect the provincial highway network is a basic infrastructure for achieving this objective.” Projects of this kind “are not major works, but are essential for everyday life and for the well-being of all road users,” the deputy added. “With these improvements we better connect all Almerians and visitors through the more than 1,200 kilometres of the Provincial Highway Network and their connections with the rest of Almeria province roads.”

Double benefits A MORE than €400,000 cash injection into Seron and Tijola has the double benefit of improving infrastructure and services and of creating 4,000 working days, according to the Diputacion de Almeria. The investment under the provincial government-managed PFEA Rural Employment Development Plan covers a series of works. In Seron these include repaving, repairing urban infrastructure and smartening up public spaces. It is much the same story in Tijola, where €206,000 is

being spent on measures like resurfacing streets, altering pavements, laying new pipes and installing new benches and rubbish bins. Works are also being carried out at the municipal Guardia Civil station. Diputacion PFEA deputy Matilde Diaz paid a recent visit to both municipalities to check out the progress on the various works and to find out directly what the local councils would like to see done under the plan. “These measures are very important for all the municipalities, as thanks to these basic works public

infrastructure is modernised and updated, which is essential for improving the quality of life of local residents,” Diaz commented. The deputy described the PFEA as “an unbeatable tool which the province’s local authorities have at their disposal to fight depopulation, one of the main objectives we have set as an institution for the next few years,” she added. “This is one of the most important plans which the province has to keep population settled and to boost the modernisation of infrastructure, especially in inland municipalities.” Diaz talked too about the importance of the PFEA for those for whom it provides employment. “They feel motivated because as well as accessing the labour market, they are working on improving their municipality’s basic infrastructure,” she maintained.

Ride the electric horse FORD has launched its new Mustang Mach-E electric crossover in London as the spearhead of a drive to electrify its UK fleet. The Mach-E is Ford’s first volume-production battery electric vehicle and the flagship for the launch of 18 mildand full-hybrid new models scheduled for launch by the end of 2021. The styling strongly links the EV to the regular Mustang, reflected in

features such as the badge and front and rear lights, as well as several lines along the bodywork. The car lacks conventional door handles, instead featuring buttons that pop open the doors and small holds protruding from the front doors. Owners can use their smartphones as keys, or use a keypad built into the B-pillar. The Mustang Mach-E sports a more radical interior, with a wide dashboard featuring a built-in soundbar. by a 15.5” touchscreen and a 10.2” digital cluster for the driver, while the steering wheel retains a number of physical controls. The model will initially be launched with two battery pack sizes and three power outputs. The entry-level version will feature a single motor driving the rear wheels, with either a 75kWh battery and 254bhp motor or a 99kWh battery and 285bhp motor. Both produce 307lb ft, with a

claimed 0-62mph time of under eight seconds and WLTP range of around 280 and 370 miles respectively. The twin-motor all-wheel-drive version is offered with a 75kWh battery and 254bhp, or 99kWh and 332bhp. Both versions provide 429lb ft and a sub-seven-second 0-62mph time, with estimated ranges of 260 and 335 miles. Charging is available through an AC home charger or via DC fast chargers at up to 150kW.

The rear-wheel-drive models will sit on 18” wheels, with 19” wheels for all-wheel-drive versions. Twinmotor machines gain adaptive LED headlights and red brake callipers, while limited-edition First Edition models also get a panoramic roof. The Mustang Mach-E is being built in Mexico and is available to order now and will be sold exclusively online, with first deliveries expected around October next year.

HONDA says its new Jazz, to be sold exclusively as a hybrid, will “raise the bar in terms of comfort and driver enjoyment.” The Jazz is the first in Honda’s current line-up to go hybrid-only, with other models soon to follow suit. The company announced last year that all of its combustion-engined models in Europe will be offered with hybrid powertrains by 2022. The new hybrid has remained familiar enough to appeal to those loyal owners, while also bringing in new people to Honda’s entry-level model. The styling is a minor evolution over the previous model but with more curved lines and redesigned lights, bumpers and bonnet. One notable feature is the split A-pillars, designed to increase forward visibility. The forward cabin design is a simple one, with clean lines and a touchscreen mounted in the centre console. Coronavirus blamed THE Coronavirus continues to create problems for Italian football. The Coronavirus has hit Italy hard in the last few days, especially in the northern parts. Seven deaths have been reported so far and more than 270 cases of infected people have been confirmed in the country. Last weekend, four Serie A matches were postponed and now it has been decided that this Thursday’s Europa League match between Inter and Ludogorets will be played in front of empty stands. Vincenzo Spadafora, the Sports Minis-

ter of the country, has now announced to Football Italia that six matches in next weekend’s league round will be played without spectators as well. Among these matches is the game between Milan and Genoa, as well as the Juventus vs Inter battle. Parma is also forced to play without an audience. This decision, while wise to try to hinder the spread of this killer virus, will certainly lead to significant losses in revenue for the Italian football clubs that are affected. Football fans who planned on going to the matches are, of course, very disappointed as well.
