AROUND a thousand demonstrators took to the streets of Los Alcázares on Sunday in the latest of a series of protests over what they claim is a lack of action to stop flooding in the town centre and across the Mar Menor. The area was badly hit by last September’s Gota Fria, followed by more problems in December, and then during last month’s Storm Gloria. Sunday’s demonstration was coordinated by Los Alcázares EcoCultural, which is a local association dedicated to preserving local cultural, historical and environmental heritage. The march attracted support from neighbourhood groups and organisations like Salvemos (Save) Mar Menor. An EcoCultural spokesman, Antonio Zapata,

recently put forward plans for a network of flood water collectors in the north of the municipality, as well as for work to be done at the mouth of the Rambla de Maraña.

The cost of the project would reach €3.5 million, of which the Murcian government has only pledged €1.5 million, which would only fund the flood water collectors.

DUMMY RUNS IMPROVE SERVICE TWO hospitals have launched new clinical training areas for medical students and existing teams which include wireless-programmed dummies that recreate the reaction of patients to treatment. Torrevieja Hospital and Vinalopó Hospital in Elche have opened ‘simulated environment’ units which are equipped with the latest technology as an important learning tool for students and staff at the two university hospitals. Hospital management operator Ribera Salud say that the areas are the first of their kind in Alicante Province, and will allow training in a whole series of situations which include cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Ribera Salud added that patient safety was a top priority, and that they regarded the new centres and use of innovative equipment and training techniques as an important part of keeping their service at the highest possible level. “Simulating what the patient’s reactions are is a key facet of the teaching process in

The official launch of the new centres comes at a time when the Valencian government has stated that health management right across the region will return to public ownership from October 2021. That means that Ribera Salud will cease to be the management operator of some health districts in Alicante Province, and they have made a series of positive announcements to try to bolster their

position. The company last week published figures that showed waiting lists for operations at Torrevieja and Vinalopó hospitals are far lower than the average for publicly-run hospitals across the Valencia region. They also announced the launch of workshops for pregnant women be held at health centres within the the catchment area of the Torrevieja and Vinalopó hospitals. Ribera Salud has also pledged to build a second health centre for the Orihuela Costa in their next five-year budget plan, which would only come into effect if they retain the management contract.

Lifeguard boost TWO beaches in the Cartagena area are set to get extra lifeguard protection this summer. The new tender to provide lifeguard services for the next two years has been advertised with two additional lookout points being specified for Playa de la Chapineta. An extra lookout post at Playa del Corral in Isla Plana is also in the tender document.

Better view SIX new cameras have been installed around Callosa de Segura to improve road safety and monitor traffic flow. Three of the town’s busiest roads are being targetted, with the local council planning at least 10 extra installations in the future. The cameras are linked directly to the Callosa Local Police station.

Sporty switch NEARLY €300,000 is to be spent replacing the lights at the San Javier municipal sports centre, including the outside sports courts. Energy efficient bulbs will be installed, with an additional €88,000 allocated to improve the heating system.

False alarm FOUR tourists were tested negative for the Coronavirus after landing back home at AlicanteElche airport last Friday. The group had gone to China and went on a cruise in the region. A precautionary protocol was activated at the airport, and they were allowed to leave after being given the all-clear by medics.

Noisy robbers THREE men botched a Torrevieja bar robbery by making too much noise as they threw the cash register into an outside rubbish skip. A Guardia Civil patrol heard the racket and caught them in the act, with one of the thieves clutching a piggy bank full of tips. The trio were denied bail after a court hearing.

Siblings caught TWO brothers in their early 30’s have been arrested by the Guardia Civil in Redovan over a series of violent robberies. One of the men had been wanted by authorities for three years, with one incident taking place in Callosa last summer when the duo assaulted an 84-year-old man in the street.

DANCERS from a Los Montesinos fitness and dance group will be taking to the stage next month in their latest charity show. The latest Suzi4fitz production is called ‘Let’s Dance’ and will once again be compered by the popular local magician Graeme Mikal. The show, produced by Sue Gibson, will take place at the Los Montesinos Music School on Thursday March 12 and Friday March 13, with curtain up at 7.00pm, and tickets priced at €10. Suzi4fitz have raised over €9,000 since 2014, and tickets can be obtained by phoning 623 339 046, or by sending an email to tickets.suzi4fitz@gmail.com. The proceeds from the shows will help needy families in the Los Montesinos area to get some food vouchers ahead of the festive season at the end of the year.

FEARS GROW GROWING fears about contracting the coronavirus have prompted a run on medical face masks at Spanish pharmacies. As reports of a dozen towns in northern Italy being put on lockdown hit the headlines and a third case of coronavirus was confirmed in Spain this week - an Italian from Lombardy holidaying in Tenerife - concerns about the possibility of the virus spreading in this country mean that pharmacies are running out of stock. The Euro Weekly News spoke to pharmacies up and down the Costas, who confirmed they have completely sold out of medical face masks. Their suggestion, they told EWN, was for members of the public concerned about protecting themselves against the possibility of infection from the coronavirus to put their names down on a waiting list. Another alternative is to try and find a medical face mask supplier online. On Monday the World Health Organisation Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesu said the virus has “pandemic potential,” but added, “Are we there yet? From our assessment, not yet.” “The key message that should give all countries hope, courage

Symptoms and advice The main symptoms of the coronavirus are a high temperature, a cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. The WHO advice on basic protective measures is to wash hands frequently with soap or an alcoholbased hand rub, to try and avoid contact with people who are ill, and to avoid touching the eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands. Sneezes and coughs should be caught in a tissue and disposed of. Past virus scares The coronavirus is not the first to cause international concern in recent years. In 2003 the SARS coronavirus affected 26 countries and resulted in more than 8,000 cases. There was also the Ebola scare six years ago, and in November 2015 there was an outbreak of the Zika virus, which started in Brazil and spread to other parts of South and North America, as well as some Pacific islands and Southeast Asia.

Beaches get spring clean EMERGENCY repairs to some of Torrevieja’s beach areas have finished, after they were hit by Storm Gloria last month. The work means that the area has been spruced up well in time for the regular March increase in visitors. The city’s Beaches councillor, Antonio Vidal, said that repairs had been carried out at La Mata, La Curva del Palangre, and at Acequión beach. Vidal said that the largest amount of attention was needed at Curva del Palangre, replacing wood that had been damaged on the walkway as well as the guardrail. The walkway was also replaced at Acequión beach, which the councillor described as being “in a deplorable state,” and the bridge was also repainted.

Learning at El Valle WORLD WILDLIFE DAY this Saturday (February 29) will be celebrated at Murcia’s El Valle Wildlife Recovery Centre with a special series of guided tours of the facility. Though the World Day is next Tuesday, the Centre has brought forward its contribution by three days to give the best chance for people to visit them. The centre was started 36 years ago in El Valle y Carrascoy regional park, and combines research with helping animals that need medical attention, which numbers well over a thousand every year. MABS San Javier donation MAR MENOR-based cancer charity MABS San Javier recently got a boost to their coffers with a €400 donation from the Sierra Golf Society, who are based at the New Sierra course in Balsicas.

The presentation took place at the MABS charity shop in San Javier, with the money going to help their continuing efforts to support cancer patients as well as their friends and families.

Onwards upwards THE NEW Cardenal Belluga Theatre Group say they are hoping to bounce back big this year, after recent problems saw their latest show having to be postponed twice. Their show ‘Reach for the Stars’ was pulled last September at the theatre in San Fulgencio due to the severe storms and the aftermath, and their plans to restage it this spring were derailed by their show director having to stand aside due to ill health. At the annual meeting, the group pledged to get things going again, especially as the proceeds from their productions go to local charities. They are keen for more members, and have launched an appeal for a technician to help with the lighting, sound and props. Alicante hotel rise HOTELS in the province of Alicante registered an occupancy rate of 56 per cent last January. This figure exceeds by 2.2 points the percentage recorded last year, which was 53.8 per cent. The interannual increase in occupancy has predominated in all the tourist areas of the province, as reported by the Provincial Association of Hotels and Tourist Accommodations of Alicante (Apha). In this way, the city of Alicante has reached an occupancy rate of 58.5 per cent, while January 2019 remained at 55.5 per cent.

OCCUPANCY: Has increased since last year. On the other hand, the establishments of the San Juan Beach have stood at 58.1 per cent, above the 51.7 per cent of 2019. In this way, the coastal and beach areas have had an occupancy rate of 52.3 per cent, compared to 44.4 per cent in January

2019, while the inside establishments improve with 37.5 per cent in comparison with the 37.1 per cent of 2019. The origin of the tourist demand in the province of Alicante last January has been mostly foreign, at 63.7 per cent. The majority come from the UK, as well

Despite the devastating effects that the storm Gloria has had on the coast of the Costa Blanca and the two closing episodes of the AlicanteElche airport, January has managed to increase the percentage occupancy rate at this beginning of the year. According to Apha, the international tourist flows that will set the pace for 2020 are international uncertainty due to Brexit, its impact on the British market one of the main ones in Spain - and the impact of the Coronavirus.

Rescue Centre at rock bottom THE Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre is under t h e w o r s t p re s s u re i n the 11 years it has been up and running, say the centre’s British expats founders Sue and Rod Weeding. They had managed to get the extra €20,000 they owed on forage, stemming from having to order supplies at double the normal price from further afield than usual after September’s storm destroyed local crops down to €17,200 thanks to donations. But now the supplier wants them to pay the remainder. “We totally understand, but are completely devastated as we just don’t have this type of money,”

TORREVIEJA Local Police will soon be using a mobile radar unit to catch drivers breaking speed limits. The device will be be used in built-up areas of the city centre where fixed cameras cannot be installed.

TRADING PLACES A CON over a written driving exam went wrong in Alicante, when the bogus examinee’s ID papers didn’t match with the man that he was sitting in for. A 21-year-old Algerian from Callosa del Segura was meant to take the test on behalf of a 22-year-old Moroccan from Redovan, but the Algerian’s ID and NIE details showed two different names. He was arrested, with fingerprint testing on one of the documents in his possession leading to the arrest of the man that he impersonated.

GREEN ZONE IN PARQUE DE LA PAZ EL PALMAR in Murcia will recover 15,534 square metres of the Parque de la Paz by spring, with new green spaces that will mean a green zone and fresh air for the village. The works include “a substantial improvement in its appearance with the planting of trees and shrub species, the completion of the sidewalk, the renovation of street furniture and the construction of a new children’s

play area,” explained municipal sources. “El Palmar will recover this emblematic space of the village with more vegetation, better services and areas for neighbourhood meetings,” said the councillor for Urban Development, Pepe Guillén. He also indicates that the works are aimed at “returning this emblematic garden to the neighbours.” According to Guillén, a kerb will surround the entire perimeter and will be ac-

companied by “large planters that will serve to increase the park’s green areas and at the same time separate traffic from children’s spaces and passing routes. In addition, banks will be set up that will generate small rest places.” The irrigation system will also be renewed, since a more modern one will be installed, with satellite-controlled programmers that work with a solar powered method. “The increase of the

Sat shop switch in Montesinos SAT Animal Rescue have a new location for their Los Montesinos charity shop, after moving from the town’s main street, Avenida de Mar. The charity this month saw the official opening of their new outlet on Calle Alejo Martínez, with Los Montesinos mayor, José Manuel Butrón, taking part in a special tape-cutting ceremony. SAT Animal Rescue now has six stores in the southern Costa Blanca region, with the first one opening up in Guardamar 15 years ago, through to their newest area of Gran Alacant, which went into business last year.

Vega baja hospital boost Free for eco cars take three years to complete, but no start date has been given by the regional administration, let alone publishing a tender for the work and awarding the contract. The €25 million invest-

ment would be spread over a 38- month period, and it is highly unlikely that any work on the site would start this year. Details of the project have now been sent by the Valencian health depart-ment to Orihuela Council, along with requests for a municipal construction licence and environmental licence. The Valencian authority said that it wanted to create the best possible facilities for patients in the area, and would add an extra 13,000 square metres to the current hospital area of 34,000 square metres.

Several buildings would be constructed including a new outpatient department; a new area for endoscopy consultations; a day hospital; and a haemodialysis unit. An added extra to the plans includes centralising all of the Vega Baja Hospital’s power generators in the light of the power cuts caused by last September’s bad weather. A new and expanded car park also features in the project, as well as improving general accessibility for all patients entering and leaving the various departments on the site. ELECTRIC vehicles can now park one hour for free in 3,400 parking spaces in 12 car parks in Murcia. The councillor for Sustainable Development and Field, Antonio Navarro Corchón, the president of the Parking Association of Murcia and the representatives of 13 car parks, have presented an agreement that seeks to ‘promote sustainable mobility in the municipality.’ One of the main agreements is that electric motorcycles or vehicles with a ‘0 Emissions’ DGT label can park one hour for free in different public car parks from February 18. Likewise, all these parking spaces have a charging point and reserved spaces for this type of vehicle. There are currently 12 car parks that are part of this agreement, which has been achieved thanks to the subsidy programme to promote sustainable mobility and energy savings in the municipality carried out in 2019. Thus, last year more than €21,400 were invested in aid of the installation of recharging points for electric vehicles in various parking lots in Murcia. With this initiative, they intend to apply actions aimed at protection of the environment and the sustainable development of Murcia City, through projects to promote sustainable electric mobility and contribute to the achievement of the municipal strategy of adaptation to climate change and, more specifically, to electric vehicles. According to data from the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT), 97 electric vehicles were registered in 2017 in the region of Murcia, while in 2018 the figure rose to 137 and in 2019, to 191. The Local Electric Vehicle Strategy is the most important milestone in relation to policies supporting electric vehicles carried out so far in the City Council of Murcia.

Shock death of well-liked DJ A POPULAR Costa Blanca entertainer and radio

DJ, Dean Alexanda, died from a heart attack last week as he was preparing to do an evening show in San Miguel de Salinas. Dean, aged 57, was the presenter of the Breakfast Show on BR2, one of the two services operated by Quesada-based Big FM, which he joined four years ago. Station manager, Richie Sparkes, broke the news on Facebook last Friday, saying: “Words do fail me with the passing of my good friend and colleague Dean. He has been a huge part of the station, and his passion for his job and family was an inspiration and he will be sadly missed.” The station added that their thoughts were with Dean’s wife Jan, who he married recently, as well as the rest of his family and friends in Spain and the UK. Social media was immediately full of wholesome tributes to Dean about his talents as an entertainer and broadcaster. The comments emphasised the high integrity that he had as well

He was involved in various radio stations in the UK and his career included

working in Spain as an entertainment manager of a luxury hotel in Salou, and he then performed a similar role for eight years at a south London nightclub. Besides his radio work for Big FM, Dean took his mobile sound show around the region, playing music for all kinds of tastes, in addition to hosting karaoke evenings. Within a short time of Dean’s death being announced, Big FM opened up a book of condolence for people to sign at their Quesada studios.

Streets of colours GUARDAMAR staged its carnival parade last Saturday in a traditional curtain raiser to the Lent season. The colour ful event featured a heady mixture of music, masks and fancy dress, with the main roads of the city featuring hundreds of participants in colour ful costumes. All kinds of prizes were handed out for a variety of costume categories including awards for the best individual and team efforts, as well as honouring the best dancers in the parade.

Meanwhile, the special children’s parade was staged the following afternoon from Plaza Jaume II to the Plaza de la Constitución del Ayuntamiento. As is the tradition, all of the young participants got some free hot chocolate and a piece of cake known as La Mona de Pascua. Many municipalities across the Vega Baja and Murcia regions got into the pre-Lent spirit with parades being held in places like Torrevieja, Rojales, and Cox.

IFA rescues the footwear fair THE Alicante Fair Institution (IFA) returned from the MICAM fair in Milan, the most important one in the sector internationally, with the approval to rescue the national footwear fair in Elche. After the low participation of the exhibitors in Momad (Madrid), the general director of IFA, Esther Guilabert, the president of the shoemaker Avecal, Marián Cano, and the undersecretary of Sustainable Economy, Natxo Costa, took advantage of the presence of companies to test them to get the fair to be held again in Valencian territory. Now begins a period of meetings to make decisions about how the fair should be, since the objectives pursued are different depending on the size of the participating companies.

Big wad of cash tempting A CARTAGENA woman had a piece of good fortune on Sunday when her handbag containing over €10,000 was snatched

from her, but it was returned to her by the police later on. The elderly woman was sitting at a cafeteria on

Calle Juan de la Cosa, located just behind the Murcia Assembly building, and having a drink at around 6.30am. A 19-year-old youth approached her and stole the large handbag, with a wad of notes temptingly lying towards the top. Cartagena Local Police were immediately pressed into action, and acting on descriptions from witnesses, launched a sweep of the area, where they managed to catch the thief. The teenager faces a robbery charge, but reports suggested that he did not use any violence. As for the large amount of money in the lady’s handbag, she told police that it was just something that she always did, with the notes being clearly visible which prompted the young thief to strike.

Drunk, unlicensed, and very loaded AN intoxicated motorcyclist was arrested on Saturday morning in the Cartagena area, and found to be riding without a licence, as well as being unable to explain why he had thousands of euros on him. The incident happened at around 9.00am in Los Dolores on Avenida de Alfonso XII, when the unlicensed biker crashed into a van. Nobody was injured in the collision, but Cartagena Local Police officers

suspected the motorcyclist was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. A breath test produced a positive alcohol reading and officers also found that he did not have a licence. The unnamed man was found to have a large sum of money in his possession, and since he could not give a satisfactory explanation as to where he got it from, the Local Police transferred that part of their investigation to the National Police.

TORREVIEJA Council has announced a massive rise in its annual budget, which would make it the biggest-ever budget in the authority’s history. Mayor Eduardo Dolón said that his plans would amount to a spend of over €115 million this year, with a timetable of

BETTER CONNECTION: A study will analyse possible alternatives for this project.

TRAIN LINK TO ALICANTE-ELCHE AIRPORT THE engineering company Prointec, a subsidiary of the Indra group, will be responsible for preparing the study that will determine how the Alicante-Elche airport connects with the future Torrellano variant of the Cercanías network. The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma), for merly known as the Ministry of Development, has formalised the contract with Prointec for €387,000, as explained by the government in a statement. The Torrellano variant will allow the El Altet airport to be connected via rail lines, the only one in Europe in its cate-

gory that does not have this type of connection, and will also remove the tracks from the coast currently used by the trains of the network of Cercanías between Alicante and Murcia to stop at the halt of San Gabriel. The study will analyse all possible alternatives to realise this project, looking for the optimal position and analysing the possibility of building a new stop. In addition, the contract will be developed in three phases: feasibility study, definition of alternatives and submission to the hearing process and public information until final approval.

Countdown on to review UK pension options before Brexit After four years of uncertainty, we can now expect Brexit to start taking effect after the transition period ends on 31 December 2020. While nothing should change for UK nationals living in Spain until then, the countdown is on to prepare. Once the UK sheds its EU obligations - including freedom of movement for capital - the government gains more scope to tax UK nationals abroad. Pensions are a likely target. Transferring your pension abroad Residents in Spain can currently move UK pensions to a Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS) free of any personal tax. Doing this can unlock several advantages, such as consolidating several pensions under one roof, gaining flexibility to take your pension in the currency you need, and

freedom to pass benefits to heirs other than your spouse. Once transferred, funds would be protected from UK lifetime allowance charges, as well as future changes to UK pension rules. However, the UK imposes tax penalties of 25% on transfers to a QROPS outside the EU/European Economic Area (EEA). There are expectations that the UK may widen this taxation net to include EU/EEA-based QROPS once the transition period ends in

December. This could be easily done since the UK legislation is already drafted to catch all pension transfers; the government would just need to remove the EU/EEA exclusion to make this happen. As such, time may be limited to transfer without tax penalties. Pension transfers can take several months to process, so if you decide that transferring is right for you, act soon. The benefits of a QROPS can vary greatly between providers and jurisdictions, however, so take specialist advice to navigate the complex options and determine the most suitable solution for you. Leaving your pensions in the UK Of course, you could do nothing and access your UK pension from Spain. If you have a ‘defined contribution’ (‘money purchase’) pension, current options include taking

cash, receiving a regular income (drawdown) or purchasing a lifetime income (annuity). You cannot usually access ‘defined benefit’ (‘final salary’) pensions as cash; instead you receive a regular income throughout retirement. While you could transfer to a defined contribution scheme for more flexible access, this is likely to be less beneficial than receiving a guaranteed income for life. Note that UK pension payments are usually only paid in Sterling. If you are living in Spain and your spending is in Euros, you could find that conversion fees and the variable exchange rate reduces the value of your pension income. Remember also that UK pensions remain subject to UK rules, which can change at any time. UK funds are also vulnerable to lifetime allowance penalties of 25%/55% when combined pension benefits exceed £1.055 million.

Your pension is likely to be central to your long-term financial security, so it is crucial to proceed with care and take regulated advice. An adviser with cross-border expertise is best placed to help you establish the best approach for you and your family’s particular situation in Spain. While there is no one-size-fits all answer for what to do with your pension, everyone can benefit from reviewing their arrangements as early as possible in 2020, before Brexit reshapes the landscape. The Local Police have seized part of the electric vehicles which circulated without permission for four months through the streets of Elche after an endless bureaucratic process. The officers had prepared to seize almost 50 electric scooters from the public. However, in one hour the responsible company, which has taken four months to comply with the City Council order after lacking the corresponding licence, realised its vehicles were being removed from the streets thanks to GPS devices integrated in the scooters. ORIHUELA Council has been attacked over the closed swimming pool at the Orihuela Costa Municipal Sports Centre (CDM), almost a year after it was shut in a row over contracts. The deal with management company UTE was scrapped by the council, and parts of the CDM then reopened under Orihuela Council staff, but much to the chagrin of local residents, the pool has remained closed because of no appropriatelytrained pool supervisors being available. Two politicians, Claro president, Helene Akerman, and councillor Javier Gracia, from the joint Cambiemos-PodemosClaro alliance on the council, have slammed Orihuela Council over the indefinite pool closure. In a joint news conference, Akerman said that a packed public meeting last week at Playa Flamenca Town Hall had at least seen Sports councillor Victor Bernabeu announce

Ex-mayor in kiosk quiz THE former mayor of Dolores, Gabriel Gascón, will go on trial in Orihuela this Monday, March 2 accused of allowing a family member to open a bar-kiosk in a local park, which broke planning laws. The anti-corruption prosecutor is charging him with crimes of prevarication, fraud, and ignoring planning statutes, and has called for a four-anda-half year prison term for the ex-leading citizen of the Vega Baja region town. That’s in addition to barring him from public office, despite the fact that Gascón stopped being a Partido Popular councillor four years ago. The prosecutor also wants the same jail sentence for the kiosk franchise

winner, and 27 months behind bars for a municipal technician, plus the repayment of around €28,000 of debt which had accumulated over the period of the successful tender. The events being examined by the court stretch back to 2008 when Gascón is alleged to have voted for the 10-year kiosk concession which went to his second cousin. Prosecutors claim the approval of Dolores Council came with the mayor’s full knowledge that the extended size of the kiosk broke development rules in a green area. Eventually the kiosk owner expanded to a size of 110 square metres, five times larger than was permitted.

Rojales drug home raided A SPANISH couple in Rojales have been arrested by the Guardia Civil for trafficking drugs out of their home, and for illegally possessing weapons. The 41-year-old man and the 47-year-old woman lived at the property with their three children, but that did not stop them from using their address to distribute hashish, marihuana, and cocaine. The duo used a small flap by the front security gates on their drive to dispense the drugs, almost like in a fast-food takeaway, which meant that their customers didn’t have to enter their house to buy their fix of narcotics. IN Spain there are two groups which most people would understand as being ‘the police.’ The National Police (Policía Nacional) who have jurisdiction in the towns and cities and the Guardia Civil outside the towns and cities. The Local Police are employed by town halls; they basically deal with property found, and enforce local laws. Whilst they have a power of arrest, when exercised they must take the arrested person to the National Police or Guardia Civil according to where the crime t o o k place. National Police and the Guardia Civil deal with all crimes, missing persons etc in their jurisdiction. The National Police also deal with all applications for immigration paperwork, NIEs, EU Citizens Registration and for non EU nationals, Residencia, etc. Throughout Europe the general number for all emergencies is 112. In Spain the operators speak English, French, German and Italian, in addition to Spanish and will liaise with the emergency services when the caller does not speak Spanish. No area code is needed and the number can be called from any phone,

including mobiles even those without a Spanish SIM card or any credit. You can also fax or SMS 112. The 24 hours national emergency numbers for Spanish speakers are: 091 - police, 061 - health emergencies 080 - firefighters. By calling 902 102 112, one can give details of certain crimes, including:- burglaries, car theft, theft or loss of documents or belongings. The service is available in English 9am to 9pm seven days a week, and 9am to 3pm in French, German and Italian. Having given details, you must go to the National Police station which you nominate, within 48 hours to make the report using the information supplied on the telephone. In the case of robbery, where threat or force has been used, victims should call 112 for police attendance, or go to the police station to make a report. Other useful number are - 016, to report instances of gender violence. For problems at sea, the Maritime Rescue Service (Salvamento Seguridad Maritmo) can be contacted on 900 202 202, and the Red Cross (Cruz Rojo) on 902 222 292. There is also a Red Cross 24-hour helpline 900 100 333.

WETLANDS EXTENDED: Birdlife to be protected.

More Protection for El Hondo Natural Park THE management of the Natural Park of El Hondo, the Governing Board, Carrizales Irrigators and environmentalists have agreed that the Area of Special Protection for Birds (ZEPA) of the area will be extended to almost double its surface. In this way, the protected area will reach Santa Pola and San Fulgencio. This ZEPA zone will go from almost 2,400 hectares to 3,900 hectares, covering the entire surface of Carrizales to Santa Pola, and the part of the wetland located in Dolores and San Fulgencio, including the Fondet of Amorós. This extension of the Natura 2000 Network was claimed by the Generalitat Valenciana for five years by the Carrizales Irrigators. As a consequence, farmers will be obliged to apply a series of measures, such as “preserving the irrigation canals of the land, using traditional and sustainable methods in their activities, not making fire, protecting native plant species - such as common reed grass and tamarit - so that birdlife can nest and take refuge, and perform pest control in a sustainable way, without insecticides or herbicides,” according to the president of the Governing Board, Vicent Sansano.

Local lab transfers production facility THE Spanish company Laboratories Quinton, specialised in the manufacture of natural supplements based on cold microfiltered sea water, is studying the transfer of its industrial facilities from the municipality of Cox to the city of Alicante. The change of location is due to the company looking for a place closer to the coast.

The objective of the change is to expand its capacity and improve the internal processes of its production system. However, it is not to use the water with which it makes its products, since the concession that supplies is in the waters of the Bay of Biscay. The company is valuing several locations, such as the area of the port of Alicante or the Aguamarga surroundings. So far, no definitive agreement has been closed and there are no specific dates for the move of the facilities. However, their decision is firm. Almodóvar Palace sold THE Fuertes Group, through its real estate division Profusa, has bought the Almodóvar Palace in the central square of Santo Domingo in Murcia. The Almodóvar Palace is a historic building that dates from the 17th century. It is included in the Special Plan of the Historic Artistic Centre and was the headquarters of the Civil Government and the police station until 1950. Until the owner's Madrid family put it up for sale in 2019, it housed offices and professional studios. Neither the facade nor the structure nor its staircase may be modified. Nor is the shield, included in the catalogue of Goods of Cultural Interest (BIC). It was owned by the former counts of Almodóvar and architecturally it has elements of the Renaissance and baroque pieces, such as the statues of the giants that escort the main balcony of the building.

THE European Banking Federation (EBF) to which the Spanish Banking Association belongs has asked the European Commission to require that large corporations should be obliged to reveal environmental in­ formation and climate risk from their activities. Such information will allow banks to determine whether they should finance certain operations after weighing up the possible envi­ ronmental damage especially as governments and the EU require a reduction in pollution. This infor­ mation would protect banks from making dangerous loans.

No one’s laughing now

WHY is everyone still screaming that Britain needs more diversity? The UK is now recognised as one of the most diverse nations on the planet. Instead of wasting energy by constantly complaining, why don’t those affected welcome this situation with open arms and start acting with some positivity? As Shakespeare observed; ‘Methinks thou doth protest too much.’ I can’t help becoming even more convinced that those who continue to condemn British society actually thrive on animosity, refusing to accept the truth in case they are deprived of something to vent their hatred on! Let’s just have a brief look at these ‘lack of UK diversity’ accusations. To date, with very few exceptions, every family based commercial on British TV depicts a mixed marriage. Practically all the ads that use a number of actors, portray an (often ludicrous) cross section of casts with ethnic backgrounds. Neither of these situations is a true reflection of life across the UK and is therefore either a minority appeaser, or some form of majority brainwashing - and is also by its very definition blatantly racist! A large number of major league football

Athletes, particularly runners, are almost all from immigrant heritage and any accusation of racism (predominately aimed at the indigenous population) is dropped on by the law like a ton of bricks. The long suffering British population has bent over backwards to accept and encourage diversity into a country which, after recovering from two World Wars, became open and ready to accept

many from other less fortunate cultures. But to see its generosity and welcome rewarded by ‘no go areas,’ terrorism, religious fanaticism, culture attack and nothing but insults and ingratitude - is quite understandably getting large numbers of them the terrible hump! The ‘far right’ was initially blamed as instigators of this UK dissent, and was quite rightly chastised for it. Unfortunately, with the blatant, unchecked reversed racism of ‘comedi-

ans’ like Nish Kumar, plus the disgraceful racist lyrics and comments of ‘Rapper Dave’ at the awful Brit awards, exponents of the not-so far right are actually beginning to think those a bit ‘further over’ may have had a point. Last week the Bafta awards were also criticised for not including enough diversity among the winners. Well, possibly there weren’t enough who were worthy of awards! We cannot fall into the trap of favouring people simply because of their ethnic heritage or gender. If we do, we will not only lower our standards, but also be in real danger of provoking even further disquiet by denying recognition of those who may be far more deserving. This whole diversity and ‘snowflake’ driven human rights situation is sowing seeds of discontent that, if unchecked, will continue to grow and flourish into a full scale civil conflict that could leave large sections of the UK’s major cities resembling Beirut. He was a leg-jiggler (and if that was you, suffering from a debilitating illness, my apologies in advance). Less prevalent than manspreaders, for whom I've developed subtle strategies, but up there with bulky bags on the free seat, fold-up bikes and elbow-jabbing texters. Back in the day I used to go to the cinema with a beefy, heavilybuilt leg-jiggler who was on the Spectrum (it’s a symptom, I understand). The embarrassing thing was that the whole row of seats would start vibrating in the darkness, mak-

ing me wonder what the heck people were making of it all... And strategies for man-spreaders? First carefully study your spreader. If he’s a clear threat or simply obese, then abort; your project’s derailed. Now, catching your target offguard may work, as women almost never react or do anything in this situation. Above all, don’t give way - ideally a bag or something similar acting as a firm buffer between you, as insistent female proximity to a leg will invariably end up with him thinking he’s being hit on. All this can lead to a silent pressure battle between the pair of you until one backs down. Not the best solution, admittedly. Other more complex strategies I’ll keep to myself ... we won’t go down that track. Train travel can truly be a bizarre experience. A friend and I boarded a packed train and managed to find seats facing a couple of millennials. At first, they seemed really annoyed we were actually sitting there - in unreserved seats. But then the young woman clearly made

I even heard her whisper to her mate we were “in their space.” Perhaps we should have issued them with a ‘trigger warning’ before sitting down? What do you think? GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY IN the words of the inimitable Andy Williams, where do I begin? Perhaps allow me to give a brief insight into my life, a life that’s been colourful, to say the least. Filled with drama, some of it good, and of course some bad. It was the late 90’s, I was living between London and my native Dublin, a time when it seemed that life for a 23-yearold me, was filled with little other than party filled nights, and long recovery lunches at places like Daphne’s, San Lorenzo or the now defunct Oriel on Sloane Square. Oriel was our HQ, a place where we would inevitably meet up to dissect the previous night, before making plans for the next. In a way, we were the original Made in Chelsea, except less scripted and without a camera crew. My circle of friends were living a similar existence, showing up at various glamorous events, night after night, photographed for Bystander or the Daily Mail, falling into an awaiting car, to dance until dawn at Annabel’s, The Met Bar, or L’Equipe Anglais. I’d return to Dublin in search of R&R, only to find there was none. Dublin, like London was buzzing, and set to embark on a period of time known as the Celtic Tiger. A glorious time of excess on every level, where it was seen as normal to down cases of vintage Bollinger over lunch, before nipping, or possibly tripping to Gucci to pick up something new for the night ahead. It was all good fun, for a select few, who called each other la famiglia. One night at a party during London Fashion Week, I was chatting with my dear friend, the late Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, who had just signed a contract with the Sunday Times to write a weekly diary style column. The idea being, her antics would be available for readers to enjoy in full colour, complete with a photo at some event or another. She joked it would be the perfect job for me and within weeks, I was contacted by the editor of the Irish edition of the paper, asking if I would consider writing a similar style diary

At the time Ireland was not clued up about such characters and a press release sent out by my agents, was met with laughter, as well as a string of media coverage, ironically making me a household name. My life changed, the parties continued, the pace was fast, but now suddenly people were recognising me on the street and requests for interviews and television appearances were becoming more frequent. Once thrust into the media spotlight, my life spiralled somewhat and while PR firms wanted me to be seen promoting their clients - from sports cars, to designer goods and such, I became so inundated, that I required an agent in Ireland as well as the UK. For many it was hard to believe that the guy who was so in demand and apparently the life and soul of the party, was in fact terribly shy and somewhat lost. It was at this time that I went down a wrong road and began taking cocaine, as a way to counteract my shyness and be ‘on form’ 24/7. Without realising it, my drug habit had taken over my life and at the height of my fame I was taking up to four grams of coke a day, not eating and drinking way too much alcohol. Not exactly a good place to be considering how public my life had become. I took part in numerous reality TV shows; Young Posh & Loaded on ITV1, Celebrity Five Go Dating on Channel 4, Celebrity Farm on RTE 1, to name a few. All of which, apart from The Farm, were and remain a total blur. Subsequently, my world came crashing down due to my addiction and I landed in rehab. Following which, I vanished from the scene and lived in Italy, France and more recently Monaco. I am clean of drugs since 2003, and have written a novel, opened a restaurant and taken time to discover who I am and what makes me happy. This time last year, I decided that Marbella may be a place that would be a good fit. One year on, and I must say, each day it makes me smile. I believe it still has much to show me, and I have much to show it. I shall be writing a weekly column for Euro weekly News starting next week, so I have returned to do something I love. If we’ve learnt anything over the past weeks, it’s that the situation is very fluid. The best guidance is keep abreast of the FCO Government Advice relating to the Coronavirus and don’t be surprised if the advice changes frequently to reflect changes in circumstance. This week the FCO changed its advice for British holidaymakers returning from Italy. Anyone returning from specific lockdown areas in Northern Italy as designated by the Italian gov-

Advice for travellers on preparing for a trip and reducing risk of exposure to Coronavirus is available according to the FCO from TravelHealthPro website. Check the FCO advice before you book your travel destination to avoid locations against their travel advice.

Keep an eye open after you’ve booked, as the situation may change. The FCO publish country by country health and safety advice that’s updated regularly and includes any locations where they advise against travel. Booked a trip but don’t want to go because of Coronavirus? We can forgive ourselves for thinking twice about travelling at the moment. However, if this is your disinclination to travel, rather than complying with FCO, or WHO restrictions, then most Travel Insurance policies won’t cover you for lost holiday or cancellation costs. All policies are different so check with your provider. What are your travel options? If you want to cancel your trip and don’t think you’ll be covered by your travel insurance,

it’s worth checking with your tour operator or airline. They can provide advice on your holiday and what plans they have in place to help. You may have options like changing your destination to somewhere safer, or your trip dates. In the circumstances, travel providers may be more flexible in facilitating amendments. Don’t forget to update your travel insurance. If you don’t want to travel at all and don’t plan to make a claim, you may be able to get a refund on your travel insurance, even if it’s after the ‘cooling off period.’ Check the cancellation terms of your holiday. Don’t leave things to the last minute. Be aware of travel companions’ pre-existing health needs; chose destinations carefully; speak to your travel providers; check your insurance cover (you may only be covered for Coronavirus unforeseen emergency medical expenses) and stay abreast of FCO and local government advice and comply with it!

A firm hand Dear EWN, Somebody recently wrote in about moving back to London and being worried about the violence. I understand the reasons for going back but it did make me think, I have never in my time in Spain seen any violence. No robberies, no gangs and no knives. I feel safe here than in my home town. I do understand that the police take a pretty strong stance when it comes to catching people in the act ‘a heavy hand’ and maybe that is what should happen in the UK. By all means, if my son had committed a crime I wouldn’t mind if the police gave him a slap round the ear or a kick up the bum. Would that slow down the kids in the UK? I guess it comes down to respect, the kids in Spain respect and fear the police, whereas the people in the UK have lost their respect for the police. Is there any way back? Power of equality MORE controversy has hit the recent awards ceremonies, this time in the world of music. Long-running music magazine NME and the Brit awards are both in the headlines with claims and acts of misogyny and sexism. With more women than ever displaying success in the music industry, artists like Charli XCX and Ella Eyre have hit out at the event for having male and female nominees competing in separate categories. Charli XCX criticised the ceremony for making the women feel like a ‘subplot’ or ‘warm-up act’ for their male counterparts. The Album of the Year category helps to show further evidence of the situation by not featuring a single female nominee, as Harry Styles and Lewis Capaldi go up against Stormzy, Michael Kiwanuka, and Dave for the accolade. The situation at the NME awards was a new low for the business. With British rapper, Slowthai set to win the ‘Hero of the Year’ award he shot himself in the foot by quickly disgracing himself and making leering comments to host and comic Katherine Ryan on stage. The incident provoked an audience member to heckle Slowthai as ‘misogynist’ during his acceptance speech to which the rapper responded by throwing his drink into the crowd and almost starting a fight. These high profile incidences are a reminder of the need for music industry mindfulness and vigilance.

SPAIN is cracking down on badly behaved Brits who could face £50k fines So some 18­year­old lads arrive in Spain on their first ever time abroad, on an all­inclusive holiday that cost €200 (because the hotel is garbage). Straight to the bar and G&Ts. A cheap local paint stripper gin served up in a measure four times as big as anything they’ve ever experienced. They drink three drinks each, not that much, and are drunk and puke in the flower bed. Everyone screams scumbags. Yes the Brits overdo it, of course they do, but the Spanish have designed these resorts around it, the people of Ibiza and Mallorca have become massively wealthy because of it. I’m here wanting to tell you my story of survival and what it’s like living with a mental illness. I’m hoping that by telling you my story and the challenges I go through on a daily basis it will not only inspire you but also give you that little bit of HOPE to carry on fighting this uphill battle and to not feel alone. I’ve suffered from it for most of my life. Looking back I can pinpoint exactly when I knew that I was different. I now look back and gently laugh at all the people who thought I had the perfect life, that I was a young, talented and bubbly person. Unbeknownst to them, I was terrorised by my demons. Having been diagnosed with Bipolar and Anxiety disorder nearly six years ago, I know that there is not one aspect of my life that has gone untouched by this mental illness. My bipolar and anxiety disorder were triggered by a sexual attack which took place eight years ago. A few weeks after the attack, it had all just gotten too much and I decided to end my life - I was too tired to carry on fighting. I was found by my mum and dad with minutes left to spare and rushed by ambulance to hospital. I was quizzed about why did I want to take my life, that I had a loving family, I was young and had my whole life ahead of me. I could see people looking at me and thinking … Why? The truth is, when you hit such a low point, you don’t think about anyone else, you don’t feel. I felt numb, I didn’t care about anything. For months after the attack, I suffered horrific nightmares and I was unable to sleep alone. I obsessively thought I was being followed or looked at. I suffered panic attacks on a daily basis. I lost all ability to concentrate or even complete simple tasks, often feeling disoriented, forgetting where, or who I was. I felt as if I had completely lost my mind. For a time, I managed to keep it together on the outside trying not to show

what I was going through, but it’s simply the worst thing you can do, you lose control on reality. What is real? Who is real? You end up believing your own lies. You convince yourself you’re okay when you are not. I started self harming, thinking that if I hurt myself harder than my thoughts were hurting me, then maybe I couldn’t be hurt. The horrifying thing is, I found relief in self harming, not realising the damage it does to you. Not only are you left with scars on your skin, but the damage it does to you psychologically is the deepest scar of all. With several hospital visits and stays in different psychiatric wards I was diagnosed with reactive depression and Borderline Personality Disorder due to the sexual attack I had suffered. I slowly gained trust in the doctors, I was able to tell them what was happening, how I was feeling, not realising that I had actually been suffering way before the sexual attack took place. Taking medication and undergoing therapy marked the turning point in recovering from my mental breakdown. For me there is no cure, no final healing. I will never be free of bipolar. BUT there are things that I can do to ensure that I never have to suffer as I did before being diagnosed. I’m no longer a prisoner of my illness and I would not be here today had I not had the proper diagnosis and treatment. The most important thing to know is that it’s never too late to seek help and speak out. Nobody should suffer alone with this There are still days I simply do not function and there are relapses that set me back. But I have got to know myself, know my mind and know the triggers. I have my little daily routines that I have to stick to which allow me to lead a normal life. I’ve also learnt than on the days it gets too much for me, to give in, there is no harm in telling yourself to stop, slow down, ride through it as best as you can. Everything in this life is passing. Just ride it out. Before you know it, you wake up and it’s a new day, a new dawn. Just hold on, hold to that little bit of hope and don’t let go of it. Slam in the Lamb I’VE cooked and eaten a lot of veg lately. I’ve even had a couple of my carnivorous friends tell me I’ve been letting down the flesh eaters. Well, this week I returned to meat in a big way. I’ve had some tasty fried chicken and also indulged my love for offal with some devilled kidneys and crispy fried pigs ears with a spicy mayo. But most popular in my house was lamb chops (chuletas) with seared lettuce and peas. The creamy Dijon mustard and crème fraiche sauce made a change from gravy with lamb. Season the lamb chops with salt and pepper and put under a hot grill. Cook for two or three minutes on each side until they are to your liking. Then keep warm. Heat a pan until hot and then add some olive oil and put in two little gem lettuces that have been quartered lengthways. Using lettuce as

a cooked vegetable is a good idea and one I am adopting! Sear the lettuce until charred on all sides. Add about 250ml of beef stock. Bring to the boil then turn down to simmer. Add a cup of frozen peas and some torn fresh mint. Once

reduced by about half, add a small cube of butter, a large dollop of crème fraiche (or double cream if feeling carefree and indulgent!) and a teaspoon of Dijon mustard. Season to taste and pour over the chops. Finish with some more fresh mint and enjoy.

Originally from Sevilla, they describe their music as ‘filthy Andalucian’ and their shows are certainly not for those who are easily shocked. The band has just released their seventh album which will form the basis of their performance and it is more than likely that they will be playing their own special parody of Staying Alive. Ofunkilo will be appearing at the Garaje Beat in Murcia City on March 27 and at La Llotja in Elche on May 23 with tickets available online.

Something needs to change MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man TODAY I’m not grumpy, I’m angry and upset. The reason for this is a young lady called Caroline Flack committed suicide and, in a strange way, I also feel a little bit responsible because her suicide was almost certainly due, in part, to the online onslaught she got after being charged with an assault on her boyfriend. Even though he wasn’t going to proceed with his complaint the CPS were going ahead with the case. The reason why I feel a bit responsible is that I have a Twitter account and I follow people like Piers Morgan and another real scumbag called Dan Wootton who works for the Sun. That newspaper printed loads of terrible stuff about her and then deleted it all when they heard of her death. Social media has to be policed. There must be a way of verifying accounts. Online bullying must be stopped and certainly ‘famous’ people must be taken to task and not allowed to encourage their millions of followers to like or comment on things too.

Morgan is particularly vitriolic at the moment about Meghan Markle. He also often defends the things he says by saying he doesn’t tweet or write anything he wouldn’t say to someone’s face. The thing is that’s nonsense because firstly he will never meet her and if he did it would be a one-to-one situation and nobody else would know. But on Twitter he’s saying it to seven million people, of which there are a proportion of his followers who then spew out the most hateful stuff. I don’t like Morgan or Wootton but it’s like I read their stuff just to get annoyed with them. They are bullies and I hate bullies. Donald Trump is probably one of the worst bullies on the internet with his followers on Twitter being over 70 million. Why do I follow them? Well I guess because of my morbid curiosity of what ridiculous lie they are going to come up with. In January 2016, a review found that one in every eight posts by Trump on Twitter ‘was a personal insult of some kind.’ As of January 2019, Trump had insulted 551 people including many private citizens. Trump has also been criticised for his practice of retweeting or copying material from social media accounts posting antiSemitic, racist or false information. Something needs to change.

Ride the electric horse FORD has launched its new Mustang Mach-E electric crossover in London as the spearhead of a drive to electrify its UK fleet. The Mach-E is Ford’s first volume-production battery electric vehicle and the flagship for the launch of 18 mildand full-hybrid new models scheduled for launch by the end of 2021. The styling strongly links the EV to the regular Mustang, reflected in

features such as the badge and front and rear lights, as well as several lines along the bodywork. The car lacks conventional door handles, instead featuring buttons that pop open the doors and small holds protruding from the front doors. Owners can use their smartphones as keys, or use a keypad built into the B-pillar. The Mustang Mach-E sports a more radical interior, with a wide dashboard featuring a built-in soundbar. The model will initially be launched with two battery pack sizes and three power outputs. claimed 0-62mph time of under eight seconds and WLTP range of around 280 and 370 miles respectively. Both versions provide 429lb ft and a sub-seven-second 0-62mph time, with estimated ranges of 260 and 335 miles. Charging is available through an AC home charger or via DC fast chargers at up to 150kW.

The rear-wheel-drive models will sit on 18” wheels, with 19” wheels for all-wheel-drive versions. Twinmotor machines gain adaptive LED headlights and red brake callipers, while limited-edition First Edition models also get a panoramic roof. The new three-cylinder turbocharged engine offers a higher level of performance with a maximum torque of 170 Nm from 2,000 rpm, enabling

The new hybrid has remained familiar enough to appeal to those loyal owners, while also bringing in new people to Honda’s entry-level model. The styling is a minor evolution over the previous model but with more curved lines and redesigned lights, bumpers and bonnet. One notable feature is the split A-pillars, designed to increase forward visibility. The forward cabin design is a simple one, with clean lines and a touchscreen mounted in the centre console.
