THE Almeria cycling classic was an allround triumph. Sunday’s thrilling ‘Clasica’ attracted 20 of the best teams in the world and reached 64 countries. It was broadcast in 21 languages on Eurosport throughout the continent, as well as on other channels as in the US, South America and New Zealand. This was the 33rd edition of what is now a top level sports event. The race is now in the UCI Pro Series category, the second most important at international level. Cyclists battled it out over a tough 187-kilometre route. Starting and ending in Roquetas de Mar, they went through Adra, Berja, Balanegra and El Ejido. German rider Pascal Ackermann (Bora-Hansgrohe) repeated his victory of last year and was first across the finishing line following a hard-fought final sprint in Avenida Juan Carlos I cheered on by the crowd. “I have finished second twice in races in Spain this year, so it was nice to finally cross the line first,” Ackermann commented. “It was a difficult race due to the wind, but my teammates did a great job, supporting me 100 per cent,” the champion added. Norwegian competitor Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates) came in second and the Italian Elia Viviani (Cofidis) took third place on the podium. Speaking before the race, Diputacion de Almeria President Javier A Garcia said he hoped it would in the near future be able to boast the logo of the UCI World Tour, the maxi-

Garcia congratulated the race organisation team for “for putting Almeria on the international map for this sport.” He said they had managed to put the race in such a high profile position “without sacrificing a shred of its origins, when 33 years ago La Clasica started out as the ‘Ruta de las Hortalizas’ in a clear and well-deserved homage to our agriculture and to cy-
cling.” The Diputacion President underscored the major impact of the cycle race on the Costa Almeria economy and tourism. The event brings some 500 people to the province, he pointed out, while the TV coverage meant that “more than 200 million homes throughout the world will discover Almeria.” There is, Garcia said, “a close relationship between sport and tourism in our province, a uniqueness
which no other province in Spain or in Europe have, and we have to boast about that and say that we have the best place in the world to practise cycling or any other kind of sport.”

He insisted that efforts to get the road open again are moving as speedily as possible, pointing out the ministry approved the emergency works “almost in record time.”
Missing British man still not found A BRITISH man who went missing from the Torrecardenas hospital in Almeria City on February 8 has still not been found. Sarah Lamble told the Euro Weekly News the UK Consulate in Malaga had informed her that Gareth Richard Brayley was in a minor car accident on February 5 on the way between Almeria airport and Mojacar and was taken to the Torrecardenas because he seemed disoriented. Three days later he walked out without being discharged. Adding to Sarah’s distress, a representative from a car rental company at Almeria airport has since seeing the report about Gareth on the EWN website and social media contacted her to say she saw him before he went to the hospital, and that he had no baggage, no phone charger and none of his medication, even though he was meant to stay for a month. Gareth appears to have the onset of dementia and so is vulnerable, Sarah told EWN, and the car rental company staff member did confirm to Sarah he seemed confused. It also appears that he is now significantly thinner than he looks in the photograph and has grey hair. The UK Consulate is involved in the

Flyers down THE number of passengers passing through Almeria airport in January was down just under 7 per cent on the same month last year to 31,846. There was also an inter-annual drop in the flight total for the month of 3.3 per cent to 619.

ALMERIA has launched a major promotional campaign to attract visitors from other Andalucia provinces to the city for the Easter Week celebrations. “Andalucians have an intimate, welcoming and very popular Easter on their doorsteps, which can be accompanied by sun, good climate, cuisine and culture,” said City Promotion councillor Carlos Sanchez at the ‘Pasion a un paso’ campaign presentation last week.
To illustrate the point the campaign promotional material image features the joined hands of two members of Easter brotherhoods. Sanchez revealed the city council has invested in 60 standard street marketing signs and 10 digital signs in different weeks in the provincial capitals of Granada, Jaen and Malaga up until March 17, which he said will be seen by nearly 500,000 people a week. “The time has come to communicate beyond our borders the val-
ues of Easter Week in Almeria, last year declared of National Tourism Interest, and these three cities have been chosen due to the number of visitors coming from there in recent years,” the councillor explained. Stolen machinery found Repeat offender arrested GUARDIA CIVIL recovered stolen heavy machinery with a total value of some €50,000 at Almeria port and made one arrest. Officers made the discovery during checks on vehicles boarding ferries bound for North Africa. One lorry driver claimed he was just transporting personal goods and items, but something about his story did not ring true and the Guardia suspected there was in fact undeclared merchandise in the lorry. A close look in the back revealed a large machine and a number of mechanical pieces belonging to other machines hidden behind a row of electrical goods. It turned out that the pieces came from different machines, among them a two-tonne road roller. Further investigations linked the machinery recovered to reports of thefts in Coslada in Madrid, Lliria in Valencia and in Zaragoza. The driver, identified as 33-year old MH from Madrid, faces three charges of theft

ADRA Local Police have arrested a repeat offender for criminal damage and attempted robbery after a call reporting an individual had lobbed a stone through a shop window on the Avenida del Mediterraneo. Officers found the suspect sitting in a vehicle parked nearby. According to Adra Council the arrested man had a police record. Local Police had in fact detained him a few weeks earlier for damage to property with an iron bar, the local authority said. Police have also linked him to an incident in which a stolen car crashed into a property, the smashing of the window of a car parked in Calle Porton, and a bag snatching in Calle Paseo Maritimo. Adra Safety and Mobility councillor Patricia Berenguel said the arrest reflected the quality of the service the Local Police force provides “which guarantees that our locality is a safe place.”

Fatal shooting motives A DISPUTE over illegal cockfights and a drug debt were the motives behind the fatal shooting of a 21-year-old in Almeria City earlier this month, police reported. The shooting took place in the midst of a brawl in the Pescaderia district of the provincial capital early afternoon on February 4. When police arrived at the scene they cordoned off the neighbourhood. Officers came across one man with a leg injury on Calle Resaca and another with a head injury on Calle Maromeros. Both were rushed to Torrecar-

and arrested on charges of inflicting bodily harm. Officers searching the area then discovered the body of the 21-year-old curled up in the foetal po-
sition with a bullet wound to the chest inside a house. There were no other signs of violence or traces of blood inside the property, but officers did find several spent bullet casings. Police forensic and homicide experts determined that a gun had been fired from the street and that seven shots had impacted against the property door, one of which went straight through it. They also found a bullet hole in a window. Investigations led to number 35 on Calle Ruano, where police arrest-
ed 22-year-old JMC for pulling the trigger. When officers gained authorisation to access the property they found the gun believed to have been used in the shooting, along with bullets and hashish. After checking out various hypotheses, investigators concluded both the fight and the shooting were down to a settling of scores related to debts from drug sales and for cock fights organised by the individuals involved. JMC is being held in prison on charges of homicide, illegal gun ownership and drug trafficking.
Mobile phone scam ONE man is under arrest after police in El Ejido uncovered an online mobile phone sale scam. Police said the detainee was part of a criminal network which ripped off people selling top-of-the-range mobiles on second-hand good apps. Operation ‘Nilophone’ was launched at the beginning of January following a report from someone that had been a victim of fraud. They told police that someone got in touch as soon as they put their phone up for sale on the internet. They agreed a price and an address in Motril in Granada to
which they should send the phone. Then the victim got a fraudulent email informing them there had been an error in the payment. It said the buyer had paid €50 more than the agreed amount, and provided a bank account number for repaying the difference. In the end the seller ended up without the smartphone, with no money from the sale and an extra €50 down. Investigations took officers to Pontevedra, Malaga, Madrid and Tarragona and other locations around Spain to follow up on reports of similar rip-offs. The contact

Numbers up THERE was a healthy increase in the number of tourists visiting Almeria last year. A total of 2,602,549 people holidayed in the province in 2019, up from 2,156,356 in 2018, according to the Andalucia Institute of Statistics Cartography regional tourism survey, which also revealed each tourist spent an average of €62.77 a day, 1.7 per cent more than a year earlier. Visitors gave the province an average ranking of 8.01 out of 10. Service and friendly people were particularly highly rated.

Carnival highlights THE final preparations for the start of Vera’s carnival are underway. The fun starts at 5pm this Saturday February 22 with a procession of carnival troupes in costumes from last year. The parade starts out from the municipal sports pavillion and ends up at the Plaza Mayor, where there is the proclamation announcing the official start of the celebrations. The children’s procession is on Monday afternoon, with the participation of the local schools’ parents’ association’s junior carnival troupes. Again the starting point is the sports pavillion, but this time it ends up in the Paseo Miguel de Cervantes, where there are attractions for children from today Thursday until Sunday March 1. On the same day there is an early evening competition of traditional face masks on the town streets, with €50 prize for the best junior and €100 for the best adult. This year there is also €50 for every group of 10 or more in traditional masks. The condition is to register beforehand with the Casa de la Cultura and to have participated in the processions. On Tuesday it will be the tinies’ turn, the children from the Campanillas infants’ school starring in the day’s parade. The grande carnival finale will be the big procession on Friday February 28, which is also Dia de Andalucia. The parade will end up at the Calle del Mar, where temporary seating will be set up to allow the public to enjoy the different troupes’ dances and performances.

THE Diputacion de Almeria is adding more sections to the provincial map of currently more than 300 kilometres of roads marked as suitable for cyclists. Public Works deputy Oscar Liria said signposting for cyclists will be installed on the mountain passes of the AL-5407 going through Collado Ramal and the AL-5405 between Abla and Escullar. The signs will be put up at the beginning and end of the sections, featuring information like the maximum and average incline and distance. Velefique to Bacares, the AL4404 in Calar Alto and the AL5402 from Bayarcal to Paterna. According to the deputy these roads have become very popular with cyclists, not just from Almeria, but also from Granada, Malaga and Murcia. “The investment in improving cyclist security is translating into an upturn in active tourism and the return of major sporting events to the province,” he said. As well as the mountain roads there are a further 26 provincial highways which attract large numbers of cyclists with special signposting to warn motorists. “In a province with climatic characteristics like Almeria it is essential to make compatible the use of the roads for cars and cyclists,” he stressed.
Backing Paralympic hopeful ADRA Council is giving its full backing to local archery athlete Jose Manuel Marin in his bid to make it onto the Spanish team for the Paralympics in Tokyo this summer. The local authority is
sponsoring Jose Manuel, who is looking good to secure his place representing Spain. The 48-year old beat the Spanish record in the Open Recurve for a distance of 70 metres in the
first qualifier held in Caceres and is now preparing for two further qualifiers. “For this government team, sport has, and will be, an essential pillar on which we are working,” commented Adra Sports councillor Pedro Peña. Encouraging sporting activity is “essential,” the councillor added. “And with a clear example of perseverance and drive like Jose Manuel, we cannot be on the sidelines. He is an example to us all, and we will help him however we can so that he fulfills his dream and shoots arrows in the Japanese capital.” Jose Manuel has been Spanish open-air archery champion eight times and was on the gold medal winning teams in the 2006 European and 2009 World championships. He has already competed in the Paralympics in Athens in 2004, Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012.

Diamond couple COSTA ALMERIA couple celebrating 60 years of happy marriage Diamond Costa Almeria couple Ann and Reg Brighton say they are not quite sure what the secret is to their happy marriage, as the couple celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary this month. Perhaps it is good old fashioned love, companionship and family. Ann and Reginald hope to be joined by some of their grandchildren and great-grandchildren when they mark six decades together on February 22. The story of how the couple first met when they were just teenagers is pure romance. Ann was working in a newsgent’s in their home city of Birmingham when one day in popped Reg and asked for a quarter of passion fruits no less. “I said we don’t sell pas-

A year later the pair were married when Reg was just 17 and Ann 18, and they have been together ever since. There have been “ups and downs,” Ann told the Euro Weekly News. The toughest point of their long marriage has
been the death of one of their three children; tragically their daughter died from breast cancer. Ann and Reg have now lived in Mojacar for half their married life. They first fell in love with the location after discovering it through a friend working as a travel rep at the very beginning of the 1990s. When Ann came into an
inheritance they decided to up sticks and move to Spain, and for many years they ran Snoopy’s bar on Mojacar Playa. Now retired, Ann and Reg have a home up in the mountains and a somewhat slower pace of life, and are looking forward to many more years of enjoying life together.

Grand carnival celebration CUEVAS DEL ALMANZORA Council has promised a grand eight-day carnival celebration. Running from Saturday February 22 to Sunday February 29, the local authority said this year’s carnival will feature processions, dances and competitions. Unveiling the carnival poster and programme, Cuevas mayor Antonio Fernandez Liria said his government team saw “keeping our customs and traditions alive” as of vital importance and that “carnival is proof of this. “In a few days’ time we will show one of the best spirits of our town, and one which has endured over the years,” he commented. Fernandez Liria made a point of expressing his “gratitude to all those actively taking part in our fiesta, who make it so much greater,” mentioning the carnival associations, the festivities commission and the law enforcement agencies. He urged people from across the region to go along and join in the fun. Festivities councillor Isabel Maria Haro Salas said there will be a few novelties this year, among them a prize for the best costume at the carnival dance in the Parque del Recreo on the first day of the celebrations. She also revealed that the big procession on February 29 will bring together more than 30 carnival clubs, which will start out from the multi-purpose warehouse at 5pm. That night there will be a carnival dance with live music from the La Mundial and the Panter Show orchestras. The mayor and councillor both took the opportunity to congratulate Jose Miguel Torrecillas for winning the competition to design this year’s carnival poster.

Gomez have classified for the Spanish cross country club championship for Andalucia, along with the Club Cuevas from Nerja. Wiam Ghanemi was under-16 champion at the re-
cent Andalucia cross country championship, thereby securing her place in the national event which will be held in Soria. Ghanemi has also been selected by the Andalucia Federation to take part in the Spanish cross country federations championship, which will be staged in Pamplona. Andres Palma took second position in the Andalucia under-18 men’s category, putting him in both the club and federation national events. It’s the same for Antonio Garcia, who was in fifth, and first for teams. Luis Gomez managed eighth in the under-20 men’s category and was first for teams. He will take part in the national club championship. Huercal-Overa Sports councillor Alejandro Campos welcomed the four youngsters to the town hall this week to congratulate them on their great results and to wish them luck in the upcoming nationals.

Between then and November there will be a series of talks, visits, cookery demonstrations, practical workshops, mentoring, food tastings, gastronomy days showcasing local culinary specialities and more. tourist attraction,” Mayor Manuel Cortes explained. Cortes also thanked all the participating local restaurants, describing them as ‘the key piece’ of the initiative. The more than €156,000 investment in Adra KMCERO has been financed by the European Regional Development Fund and

by the local authority. The idea underlying the project the council said is “to make the most of such an important resource in the municipality, improving the competitiveness of local establishments, and in this way promoting tourism in the municipality, with a distinctive gastronomy brand.”
MOJACAR locals had a memorable experience when they travelled to Sevilla to make up part of the studio audience for the popular Canal Sur TV magazine programme ‘La Tarde, Aqui y Ahora.’ Third Age councillor Ana Garcia had managed to secure an invitation for members of the Mojacar senior citizen association after they told her how much they would like to take part. It took a fair bit of time to get it sorted the council reported as so many municipalities from across Andalucia apply to be there to see well-known TV personality Juan y Medio present the live mix of news, entertainment and music along with some senior citizen matchmaking. The 46-strong Mojacar bunch, plus Ana Garcia, said it was all great fun, especially to meet Almeria-born Juan y Medio in the flesh. He knows Mojacar well he told them, having visited on a number of occasions. The senior citizens took the opportunity to make an important contribution to the programme’s food bank campaign, taking with them 120 kilos of non-perishable foodstuffs. They also took with them a taste of Mojacar, providing home-baked bread, cakes, biscuits and muffins and cold meats for the afternoon snack featured on the show. Ana Garcia commented particularly on the “warm welcome” they had received from the whole programme team, who made it such an unforgettable day for them all.

Chancellor in a separate interview said that whilst a staunch Remainer, he now realised that it was a mistake and that the party should have understood the mood of the country. At the time, he was convinced that the indication of a referendum would convince Labour supporters to vote as they would normally do but in the end, it became clear that Boris Johnson won so convincingly because the tide of opinion agreed that Brexit should just be pushed through. Now various Labour party ‘names’ are revealing that they warned against being seen to support a second referendum and that Labour should have looked to appease their high percentage of leave supporting voters. As members appear to be blaming each other for the reason that they were so soundly trounced, it seems that the continued support that Sir Keir Starmer is giving to the policy could backfire on him as he endeavours to take over from Jeremy Corbyn.

HUERCAL-OVERA’S indoor pool has reopened to the public following important repairs. The council said the works involved reinforcing the interior of the central false ceiling in order to guarantee its safety and repairing a broken pipe, which made it necessary to empty the main pool. Huercal-Overa mayor Francisca Lourdes Fernandez explained the breakage occurred in the early hours of January 12, and that the necessary repair works were started immediately. Making the most of the pool being empty it was decided to replace a ceiling panel. Following an inspection the maintenance staff recommended reinforcing the system for holding the panels in place. “It was a situation which obliged us to act immedi-

Less Almerians elsewhere THE number of Almerians living elsewhere in Spain has dropped by some 30 per cent since 1998, according to the Andalucia Institute of Statistics and Cartography. Replacing a lost or expired British passport from Spain WITH Brexit just around the cor ner, if you have less than six months life left on your passport it would be a good i d e a t o re n e w s o o n e r r a t h e r than later. Quite often when different official forms are digitalised, it becomes more rather than less confusing and you need to have a degree in programming in order to proceed. For once however, the British government has made things much easier and far less complicated in applying for a replacement passport if yours has been lost or is about to expire. No longer do you need to supply lots of forms including birth certificates and to have a photograph physically signed on the back by someone who knows you and it really is now quite easy if you have access to a computer. Very simply visit https://www.gov. uk/overseas-passports and you’re taken through the whole process step by step and the only drawback is that there isn’t a single page detailing everything including costs as you have to go through a page at a time. There is however a passports link which does give quite a lot of information on the website, but not everything. Even if you have lost or had your passport stolen, you are not precluded for applying online for a replacement, but you have to declare it lost in advance also online. As a real bonus you can now use digital photograph and there are quite explicit rules about what is acceptable as you navigate the website and whilst it may take a couple of attempts, provided you remove any glasses and stand in front of a
white background, a selfie taken with a phone will probably work ok. If you are not happy using a phone camera, then most towns have at least one print shop where they can photograph you and give you a digital image on a memory stick or card. As you progress through the procedure you will be best served by having access to details of your previous passport, but it isn’t actually essential and the site does report back to a human in the UK who can check. When you post your photograph, you will be asked to give details (including email address) of a person of standing who can confirm that they know you and that the photograph is of you. The whole process can take up to six weeks from start to finish and this will include delivery via courier to your address in Spain and you have to pay with a debit or credit card for the cost of the passport (depends upon number of pages) and courier fee at the time of submitting the application online. You will be sent a special code which will allow you to track your passport through all of its stages. In the event that you have lost your passport and need a temporary replacement, that can also be done online. It is more expensive than a normal passport, is usually good for one round trip only and will normally be issued by the British Consulate in Malaga. For those without computers, it is still possible to apply through the post and there are even different shops with English-speaking staff scattered around Spain where for a fee they will help you complete the forms and send them off for you.

Spring flowers for Lubrin hash IT was blue skies and sunshine for the Indalo Hash House Harriers’ Lubrin meet this month. Around 20 hashers assembled at a village bar, welcoming several newcomers and some returners, notably Doggy, Sprout and Slippery Fingers. One thing you can always rely on with a Lubrin hash is hills, so the six run-
ners took a deep breath and set off to follow the devious trail laid by the Hares Baldy Locks and PT. Meanwhile walking hashers were led off by Hare Two Hats for a very pleasant and leisurely walk in the countryside. The almond blossom was out, and the spring flowers coming up. Wild rocket covered the fields.

Commenting after a recent meeting with Chamber of Commerce President Jeronomo Parra, Huercal-Overa mayor Fran-
cisca Lourdes Fernandez said a municipal office would make it possible to “provide a more close at hand service to business people in our municipality the surrounding area.” The Chamber of Commerce has the same objective. “This decentralisation and closer proximity to companies in their municipalities and areas of influence gives us greater flexi-
bility in responding and provides business people with greater communication,” Parra said. The idea is the HuercalOvera office would offer business services, including details on European programmes, training and innovation activities, processing certificates of origin for exports and courses aimed at young people.

AENA, the company which man ages airport facilities around the world and whose biggest share holder is the Spanish government has contracts to take over control at six Brazilian airports. The contract is believed to be worth €404 million to the compa ny and it has vowed to ensure that each site will be as energy efficient as possible with the in troduction of renewable sources, especially solar power. It has also pledged to spend €250 million to clean up and up grade the electric supply at the airports it manages in Spain.

I have just read your piece in the EWN and found it very infor mative but wondered if you could clarify your last sentence. ‘The majority must include the Quotas or Par ticipation Shares.’ What are they? M S (Costa Blanca) The Law of Horizontal Property notes that YOU AND THE a measure will be LAW IN SPAIN passed by ‘A majori ty of owners who at the same time represent the majority of property shares.’ This concept of ‘double majority’ needs explanation. Each owner has one vote as an owner of a property. He also has another vote, which is weighted according to his share in the total property. This is your quota. For example, if there are 100 flats all the same size, each owner will have a par ticipation share of 1 per cent. This percentage determines your community fee. Problems can arise when one owner has a very large property and so he has a large participation share. His vote counts for more. In communities with flats of various sizes and thus various quotas, the picture gets more complicated. I hope this clears up the issue.

Sustainable fresh fish WITH more than 340 fresh fish counters in its stores, Spanish supermarket chain, Eroski, has to purchase large amounts of all types of fish on an annual basis. Wherever possible it obtains sus tainable products and has just an nounced that in 2019 it purchased 3,144 tons of fish which was certi fied by one or other of the recog nised authorities. According to the supermarket, more than 1,800 tons were certi fied as coming from sustainable grounds by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and a further 800 tons were approved by GLOBALG.AP with their GGN seal. There lies the problem
LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT SOMETHING really has to be done about these ludicrous ‘human rights.’ To be honest I don’t even know what the term actually means. And there of course lies the true problem. The more obscure and complicated any point of law can actually be, the more the money grabbing lawyers can exploit them - which of course make them the last people on earth who would want them clarified. In fact, complexity and confusion in matters of law, is like money in the bank for this unscrupulous bunch of legal parasites. This latest fiasco once again brought the whole disgraceful debacle on to the front pages. Last week 42 Jamaican nationals were due to be deported after being convicted of offences ranging from manslaughter and firearms to rape and drugs. Lawyers (who else) stepped in and said that a large number of them shouldn’t be deported because their ‘uman rites’ had been denied.
HUMAN RIGHTS: To be honest, I don’t even know what the term actually means. How? Wait for it. They hadn’t been able to get a signal on their mobile phones to ring their - yes you’ve guessed it - lawyers! The legal Mafia, no doubt riding high on tax payers’ money; subsequently presented their case and the judge agreed. Because of the mobile phone fiasco, 25 of these toe rags couldn’t be kicked out. No doubt these numbskulls couldn’t get their heads around a landline!
The thing that once more emerges from the actions of these legalised con merchants is they yet again find themselves in a win win situation. The lawyers of course never lose. Well it’s about time they were curbed. From their persecution of our brave servicemen, to getting murderers and rapists released back on the streets, these people are not interested in justice, all they are interested in are their
own self-centered ends - and the human rights laws are a licence for them to print (tax payers’) money. Well I think that these ‘rights’ should be resolved during the trial. Judges, in the sentencing of those who have totally ignored the human rights of their victims, should have the power to decree human rights ‘denied’ or ‘minimal’ human rights. Lawyers receiving legal aid remuneration from the public purse
should have their fees capped at a reasonable level. Weed out the ambulance chasers and those without any moral conscience whatsoever and their illgotten gains could be put toward the branches of law and order that put the law abiding public first. Not as a means for lawyers to buy another villa in the south of France. It’s all about money isn’t it? The Saudis have the means, the space and the money, to lay a temporary airfield right next to those poor suffering Kurdish civilian refugees. They could easily build a vast tented camp in their country and fly every one of their innocent fellow Sunnis out in a month. But they won’t will they? This spoiled bunch of utter wasters would rather bribe and blackmail the West to totally leave them out of the whole refugee crisis altogether. Money over morals. Never ends does it. Are they really anti-animal? MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man O K f o l k s h e re ’s t h e l a t e s t bonkers suggestion. If I didn’t know better I’d have thought it was April Fool’s day. PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, has launched a campaign to end ‘anti-animal’ sayings like ‘kill two birds with one stone’ and ‘bring home the bacon.’ Are they anti-animal? Has some budgie complained it’s offended? ‘Just as it became unacceptable to use racist, homophobic, or ableist language, phrases that trivialise cruelty to animals will vanish as more people begin to appreciate animals for who they are and start ‘bringing home the bagels’ instead of the bacon,’ PETA wrote on Twitter. Yup you read it correctly. In another tweet, the organisation gave alternative language to such phrases to help people ‘remove speciesism’ from their conversations. Instead of ‘kill two birds with one stone,’ people should now say ‘Feed two birds
with one scone.’ ‘Take the flower by the thorns’ should replace ‘Take the bull by the horns.’ What is happening for goodness sake? All you groups like PETA just stop because all you are going to do is distract from all the good things you do. I’ve been getting a ridiculous amount of emails telling me I’ve either got a load of money coming to me or do this or that to stop a load of money being taken from me. They are all, of course, scams. I have so many Nigerian Princes and Government Ministers throwing dosh at me at the moment. It must work with some people or they wouldn’t keep doing it, but not with me or any of you. One that I must admit made me have a double take was from Pay Pal, or purporting to be, telling me ‘Act now, or your account will be deactivated.’ or ‘Security breach on your account.’ This, of course, can cause you to panic, but when you look it’s not from PayPal at all. The biggest giveaway is it’s not actually addressed to you. It says ‘Dear valued customer’ whereas any genuine company will always use your name. Oh and finally a bit of good news. I finally got my Spanish driving licence which I applied for last May. RESULT!

The differences A COUPLE of weeks ago I apparently rattled a few cages with my comparing the respective values of the Bible and Science in explaining the origins of the Universe, asserting that the Bible endeavours to answer the question ‘Why,’ whereas science addresses the very different question of ‘How.’ But if we really think about it I’d maintain the importance of understanding these differences. If you were to ask me how it was that my car came to be parked outside the Anglican Church in Mojacar last Sunday morning, I could give you a very precise, scientific account explaining the various forces that had been applied to that vehicle, burning a precisely measured amount of fuel to enable it to overcome gravitational loads and frictional resistance, such that it travelled some 90kms from my home to Mojacar, where, hydraulic pressure caused a considerable increase in drag on friction pads attached to the wheels, such that it came to rest as the fuel supply was turned off right outside the Church. The detail could have been far greater and absolutely precise, but it would prob-
ably have made little sense to anyone. On the other hand, I could simply explain that I wished to go to Church, so drove my car there and stopped once I had arrived, and I guess most people would completely understand that explanation of ‘why my car was outside Church.’ And generally speaking I think most of us are happier with explanations of ‘why,’ which may be utterly unscientific than we are with struggling to comprehend the answer to ‘how,’ which necessarily has to be completely scientific and highly technical. And so it is that I’m more than happy to acknowledge that the creation story of the Bible is of little scientific value, containing minimum information as to how it all came into being. There’s nothing about the laws of nuclear physics which may have led to the so-called ‘Big Bang,’ nor of the origins of such as gravitational nor centrifugal force, which contribute to the stability of our continually expanding Universe, but instead the Bible explains that all these were generated at the will of God as He uttered the word of creating command.

Pleasant CODE OF THE ROAD journey
EURO WEEKLY, I recently read that young people in Malaga are classed as the worst drivers and wondered how Spain fairs as a whole? As a pedestrian and cyclist I just can’t get over the lack of rules of the road out here. Do people literally just not care or are the police too busy catching Eastern European drugs gangs they just don’t have the time to enforce traffic laws. I have been in a car that was stopped once, because the car had French plates, my friend was fined for a silly made up charge. However, most evenings I will see absolute idiots ripping through the towns at ridiculous speeds and I live close to two police stations but have never seen any Spanish people stopped. Is it the driver’s fault or years worth of lazy police work? Oh and don’t even get me started on parking!! Why would anybody invest in a new car here only to have it bounced back and forward whilst a local makes himself a space?

If only our country treated foreigners the same as the Spanish, we are given nothing and are expected to conform to Spanish law. An approved Mental Health Practitioner should have been appointed to assess the girl’s mental health and her capacity. If she’s already on (prescribed) medication, her own GP should have referred her to a WellBeing Clinic at least. Her parents should also have tak en responsibility as well. I know the girl is over 18, but even so they should have recog nised she needed help. It’s no excuse for what she has done, but surely we are trying to create a caring society… Someone should step in about the girl’s mental health and get to the root cause of her behaviour? SO, it seems Meghan and Harry are on a full throttle cull at the moment. First her family, then the royal family and now their faithful staff. Have they never heard the saying that you should not bite the hand that feeds you? Historically people would claim to be loyal subjects to the royal family but it seems that loyalty is very far from the young couple’s minds. Should you push away every part of your life to concentrate on a new life with a loved one? Should it all go wrong and they have a change of heart will they have well and truly burnt all the bridges behind them? With the recent news of the staff being axed will this bloodbath drive a wedge between the two and any respect people may have for them. Sources have pointed out that the couple have decided to hire a team of US-based agents and publicists, many of whom worked for Meghan when she was an actress. The couple have been organising private engagements and briefings with the US team and hired a Canadian designer to create a new website without any involvement from the royal advisers. Maybe we should wish them well and send them on their merry way and hope that neither come home with their tail between their legs.

The third highest price paid for a work by the artist. Executed in 1966 this landmark pool painting first appeared at auction at Sotheby’s in London in 1973 and again in 2006 when it sold for £2.9 million, a record for a a Hockney at that time. Nine of the top 10 prices for Hockney have been set in the past two years. One of he most iconic images of the 20th century Hockney’s composition of a still swimming pool shattered by an invisible figure creating the splash. ‘The Splash’ is certainly one of the most recognised images of the last 100 years and more or less defines what we all think of as modern or contemporary art. Banksy’s ‘Vote to Love’ more than doubled its pre-sale estimate when the bidding soared to £1,155,00. In the year of his 100th birthday Wayne Thiebaud’s Californian ‘Fruit Stand’ achieved a delicious £1,815,000. Having remained in the same European collection since the 1960s this auction follows on to a record-breaking sale of the artist work at Sotheby’s New York sale room last November. The ‘Fruit Stand’ was executed in 1963 being a view of a fruit stand on a hot summer’s day. Reinventing the traditional ‘still life’ form to reflect the age of mass production and mass consumption. Wayne Thiebaud’s mastery of colour is spoken of in terms that place his work among those renowned artists and maters of colour of Paul Cezanne and
Pierre Bonnard of an earlier epoch. IN a recent speech, NHS boss Sir Simon Stevens hit out at ‘quacks, charlatans and cranks’ who spread fake news about health on social media including Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle brand Goop for selling products with no proven health benefits. It has always surprised me that actors or actresses who have become celebrities for basically reading and performing the lines and instructions of screenplay writers and directors are given such a seal of approval for their opinions on topics completely unrelated to their sphere of activity. Generally speaking, you’d need to justify your views on any subject by demonstrating your qualifications, experience or abilities applicable to the subject matter. They seem to have been given a platform to speak from that goes

As for products such as Goop’s, they’re based on a motley combination of three eternal myths: they promise ‘The Fountain of Youth’; they’re ‘The Panacea for Everything’ or they contain ‘Mystery Ingredient X.’ Often backed up by scientific-sounding words (‘Lab’ in this case), or anecdotal plugs. But why is this ‘quackery’ (in Sir Simon’s own words) even allowed to boom in the modern era? People are so gullible, easily taken in by superstars who are the only winners making millions out of such unproven nonsense. Spicy Veggie Spaghetti NOT another meat free pasta dish I hear my keen carnivore readers cry? Well fear not my meat and fish eating friends, next week will see something to satisfy your craving for flesh. I’ve just been on a bit of a vegetable kick for the last couple of weeks. Not for any virtue signalling moral reason, there just seemed to be a lot of veg in the house, so it needed using up. This dish is good for any tomatoes
or peppers that have been hanging around and need using up. Put the oven on quite low (about 150ºC). Put a little olive oil in a baking dish. Cut up a tomato, red and green peppers, a few whole garlic cloves, onion, spring onion, chilli peppers (anything you want to get rid of!). Place in the dish, drizzle with more oil, season with flakes of sea salt and ground black pepper. Place in the oven and roast for an hour or so.
Check every now and then and if the peppers are starting to blacken turn the temperature down a bit. Take out the oven and let the mixture go cold. It will keep in the fridge for a couple of days. When needed give the mixture a good bashing in a pestle and mortar. I added to a pan with cubes of fried aubergine. Add some cooked spaghetti. Feel free to adorn with parmesan if you’re not a vegan!

Signing up to rural employment plan L U C A R a n d Ve l e z Blanco have joined the network of municipalities in which the Diputacion de Almeria implements works and projects under the provincial PFEA Rural Employment Plan. Diputacion President Javier A Garcia and the mayors of the respective municipalities Manuel Lopez made the arrangement official with the recent signing of the collaboration
agreements. This brings the number of councils making up the network to 86, along with two local authority associations. “Thanks to these agreements the councils save on the management of projects, the coordination of all the works, the workplace accident risk prevention, the coordination of health and safety and the tasks of contacting and human resources,” commented
PFEA deputy Matilde Diaz. The deputy said there are currently 202 works being carried out as part of the rural employment plan, adding, “we are sure that this year with the incorporation of these municipalities there are going to be more projects, more works, more days and more contracts, which will be directly managed by the Diputacion.” The provincial government describes the plan as a ‘lifeline’ in the struggle against depopulation, maintaining it helps address economic, social and cultural inequalities in rural areas, provides work for agricultural sector workers and improves and moder nises infrastructure and public services.

COSTA ALMERIA club Taekwondo M o j a c a r, s y m b o l i s e d b y a t r i b a l dragon, has now concluded the latest quarterly grading. As usual, it was a busy affair with everyone in the club having something to do. The trainees undertaking the grading examination, some confident, some nervous, were all focused on doing well after having trained hard the previous months. The parents were excited and proud to find out how their children performed under pressure. And the club instructors and assistants were all tied up to ensure the event was successfully conducted. On average, it takes about three hours to complete the grading of various belt levels. Confidence and assurance are what examiners look for, but of course the patterns and forms must be well done. From white belt, it takes four to five years to acquire a black belt (First Dan). Forms and agility are important criteria in a grading. In taekwondo, students have a total of 11 patterns and various kicking techniques from white to black or 10th GUP to 1st Dan. At the final belt level just before attaining the black belt, trainees are ex-

Taekwondo is not an ‘everyday’ sporting activity. It’s structured with a development path, and involves discipline and commitment. But the journey is an interesting and fulfilling one. As was to be expected during the grading, the students showed excellent form and maturity. Free sparring is also
part of the grading from an early age. In consideration of safety guidelines, no hard contact is the norm for all practitioners. In a grading session, application of various techniques are required. Trainees of higher belts are frequently asked to spar against black belts. Apart from forms, patterns and sparring, trainees are interviewed by the examiner to assess characters’ maturity and mindset. Character building is just as important, if not more, than physical. In the Rainbow section (4-8 years), Jose Antonio, Eduardo and Summer all passed to the next belt. Eduardo was awarded the ‘tiger glove’ for best improved student and Summer got the ‘golden gloves’ for excellent sparring. In the Junior section (9-17), Canelie, Miguel, Gabriel, Lily Miles-Kirby, Maite Scheyvaerts and Mila Vickery were successful and received their respective higher belt. A special mention to Mila, who was awarded the golden gloves for best sparring (against two 1st GUP ‘A’ students and a black belt 2nd Dan). The instructors and assistants judging the event were Serge Dewree (2nd Dan), Laura Linschoten (2nd Dan), Osaia Reding-Commaille (1st Dan), Thomas De Groot (1st GUP A) and Talia Vickery (1st GUP A).
Great play at Costa Almeria golf club competitions • Wednesday February 5 - Monthly Medal A dull damp day with plenty of rain off and on made golf difficult for all the players, but the winner was in great form and was not to be denied.

THERE was some great play at the latest Aguilon Golf Club competitions. A stand out moment was the hole in one for Les Raufer playing in the weekly roll up. His nine iron tee shot on the 17th landed on the green and gently rolled the six foot to the flag and nestled in the bottom of the cup, much to his delight.
