IT was a night of full on carnival dazzle at the national DragQueen 2020 contest staged at Cartagena’s Wssell de Guimbarda sports pavillion on Monday night. Contestants from Palmas de Gran Canaria, Madrid, Barcelona and Extremadura camped it up in fabulously lavish over-the-top costumes and towering platform shoes. Perseidas was crowned this year’s top drag queen and Nebula was named first lady, both of them members of Cartagena carnival groups. There was a drag

Consular team holds outreach events ON March 17 and 18 the British Consulate in Alicante is holding four separate outreach events to update UK nationals in Alicante and Murcia on what the UK’s departure from the EU means for them.
Members of the consular and Embassy team will explain the citizens’ rights protections included in the Withdrawal Agreement and advise on any action you need to take during the transition period (to

Diving push THE Mazarron Tourism councillor and representatives from local dive schools were at the weekend’s Mediterranean Diving Show in Cornella de Llobregat in Barcelona to promote the municipality as an attractive scuba diving destination. Bar burglars POLICE arrested three burglars when they broke into a Murcia City centre bar in the early hours of Monday morning. Patrols responding to a report of the suspected robbery found the metal blind had been forced open and the trio of middle-aged men were hiding inside.
Contracts up MURCIA region registered a 6.9 per cent increase in the number of work contracts awarded to people aged 45 or over last year, according to a study by human resources services company Randstad. This was the highest growth of any region in the country.
Porn arrest A MIDDLE-AGED man in Elche is under arrest on charges of saving and sharing child pornography online. Police tracked down the man via his IP address, seizing a computer and other electronic devices from his home. The detainee reportedly admitted downloading porn, but denied sharing the materials.

PRIDE AND JOY JAGUAR Enthusiasts Club Costa Blanca north and south held their February meeting to coincide with Valentine’s Day, which made it a very special day to remember by the 76 members and their guests who attended the themed lunch. The day started early as members made their way to the famous valley of Jalon to view the early flush of almond blossom of white and pink, but due to the unusually warm weather it had been brought forward by two weeks thus making its normal spectacular appearance a little more subdued.
This did not dull the excitement of the full fun-packed day ahead as the big cats began to roll into the parking of the coffee stop meeting point at the restaurant Venta Roja in Lliber. Once everyone had been refreshed, members discussed their pride and joy as the jaguars shone brightly in the beautiful sunshine and clear blue sky of this February winter’s day, before proceeding to their next stop at the bodega in the village of Jalon. Their final destination was to Alcalali to the restaurant La Solana where lunch had been organised for 2pm, served to live music from
the duo The Crooners. There was also an unexpected per formance from JEC’s very own professional singer Maria which was followed by dancing, making it a fabulous day that was enjoyed by everyone as the JEC members were able to spend Valentine’s Day with the loves of their lives, and also their wives. The club is keen to enlist more members from Costa Blanca north and south. ORIHUELA Council is investing €632,000 in disadvantaged districts over the next two years under the Cinturon del Monte San Miguel Social Regeneration Programme. The project is part of the EDUSI sustainable urban development strategy, which is 50 per cent financed by the European Regional Development Fund, and which comes under the 2014-2020 Sustainable Growth Operative Programme. Social Well-being councillor Mayte Sanchez explained measures will be aimed at improving the social and workplace integration of communities, with a particular focus on training. The social reinsertion programme will begin with the selection of personnel, followed by a two-month period to assess areas and sort out premises. There will then be time to plan the activities which will feature in the programme. The activities will be aimed at families, young people, women and senior citizens resident in districts including San Anton, Rabaloche and Capuchinos/San Isidro.
THE El Hondo Natural Park management, the governing board, Carrizales irrigators and environmentalists have agreed to extend the Area of Special Protection for Birds (ZEPA) to almost double. This ZEPA zone will increase from some 2,400 to 3,900 hectares, covering the entire area of Carrizales to Santa Pola, and the part of the wetland located in Dolores and San Fulgencio, including the Fondet of Amoros. The Carrizales irrigators have been calling on the Valencian government for the extension of the Natura 2000 Network for five years. Farmers will now be obliged to apply a series of measures so that birdlife can nest and take refuge, and use sustainable pest control, without insecticides or herbicides.

RASCALS NEEDS YOU RASCALS are a social a n d t h e a t re g ro u p working for the community and raising money for local charities. They began in 1993 when a small group of friends from La Siesta decided to meet up regularly for social events. They wanted to raise money for charity and entertain people so they started to put on shows in local bars and squares. Since that time Rascals have put on many shows in local theatres and venues, raising thousands of euros for different charities. Only last week they presented afecancer with €450 they had raised from some of their most recent shows. Sadly in the last couple of years the Rascals numbers have dwindled from their heyday in the 2000’s when they had over 70 members. They are presently putting together their next show and are looking for new members across all ar-
eas. Rascals are having an Open Day at Sacko’s Bar, El Limonar on Monday February 24 from 11.30-1.30. So if you would like to be involved, whether front of stage singing and dancing,

Easy Walkers FEBRUARY 14 was the date of the February Easy Walkers day out and the weather was perfect for the walk. The group comprising 44 members of the Torrevieja U3A started off from Coffee Bar El Molar in La Marina in the bright sunlight to see whatever activities were taking place in the El Pinet Country Park. The walkers were entertained by flocks of flamingos feeding in the lakes and seagulls noisily getting together to do what comes naturally at this time of year. St Valentine’s day seemed an appropriate day for so doing! Some of the more adventurous members of the group scaled the viewing tower amongst the sand dunes in order to get a better overall view. The group then carried on to have a stop for lunch/refreshments at Restaurante Gallego Playa.

Crescendo raises €1,200 CRESCENDO INTERNATIONAL CHOIR performed a concert on Saturday, February 8 at Salt Church in Los Montesinos that raised €1,200 for the church. Salt Church plans to use this money and other funds it has raised for new flooring. Among the music performed by the choir were three popular Spanish songs entitled Amapola, Clavelitos and Viva la Vida. Other music sung were such well-known tunes as Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, Fix You by Coldplay, I Have a Dream by Abba, Imagine

the audience. Crescendo International Choir plans to give another concert at Salt Church at 6pm on Saturday, October 3 with the Chivenor (England) Military Ladies Choir. A donation of €10 will be required to see the concert.

Storm plan PRICES RISE: Blamed on electricity, clothing and food.
CPI rate falling PRICES fell 1 per cent in January in the region of Murcia and the interannual rate rose 1.2 per cent. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) of the region of Murcia decreased by 1 per cent last January compared to December 2019. On the other hand, the annual rate of the CPI increased by 1.2 per cent, according to data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE). In this sense, the region
of Murcia registers the fourth largest decrease by communities along with Andalucia, Aragon, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Cataluña, Extremadura and the Basque Country. The INE has attributed the rebound in the annual CPI rate in January to the rise in the prices of electricity, clothing and footwear, and also the prices of non-alcoholic beverages and food, especially fish and seafood.
ELCHE will invest more than €3 million in projects against torrential rains. The local government has agreed to build rain collectors and reservoirs with the collaboration of Aigües d’Elx in order to reduce the damage that may be caused by future storms. As explained by the spokesman of the government team, Héctor Díez, the purpose of this initiative is to reduce the damages and conditions that may cause future stormy and tempestuous phenomena, which are increasingly common on the Costa Blanca. Among the five approved projects of Aigües d’Elx, the implementation of a water tank automation will be launched, which will al-

low all the water stored and treated by the Algorós treatment plant to be pumped back into the urban area and regenerated. In addition, the Hoya water collector will also be renewed and the rainwater collector connection project on the Santa Pola road will begin. On the other hand, a project that allows the
increase in the capacity and storage of rainwater in Arenales del Sol has also been approved. The objective is to create an anti-storm tank and store the rain to avoid flooding and disasters. Finally, the stormwater raft of Torrellano will also be reformed. All these initiatives involve an investment of more than €3 million.

Showcasing Rojales cuisine ROJALES is set to be the place to be for foodies with a twoweek event offering the opportunity to try some of the area’s best local cuisine. Ten different restaurants are taking part in the ‘eighth Jornadas de la Cuchura.’ Each is putting on a special menu featuring a main course of a hearty ‘spoon dish.’ Delicious choices will range from chicken casserole with meatballs and regional-style mountain stew to French beans with lobster, clams and crayfish or a classic rice option. Alicante Carnival THE celebrations of the Car nival of Alicante will fill the streets of the city with joy and colour from February 20 to March 1. During these 10 days all attendees can enjoy parades, activities, music, food and festivals, and the event will feature the participation of all the inhabitants of the city. The activities will begin today, Thursday with the Dijous de Gras, the Correfoc and the Ball de Diables. On Friday the proclamation will be given in the Plaza del Car men, which will mark the official start of the festivities. On Saturday the children’s and adult carnival will be celebrated with musical shows and DJs.
On Tuesday, February 25, there will be a torch parade, while on Wednesday, February 26, the popular Burial of the Sardine and its funeral procession will mark the end of the Carnival festivities and the beginning of Lent. However, on Sunday, March 1, children’s games, contests and piñatas will be offered for children. The Local Police of Alicante will reinforce this year the control of alcohol consumption during Carnival festivi-
ties in the city. In addition, the City Council will promote a space without alcohol consumption with the leisure activities ‘LifeOn 0.0.’ This space will be located in the Central Market on Friday, January 21 from 8:00pm.

Amazon creating jobs THE large e-commerce company continues to expand in Spain. Amazon will open one of the main logistics and distribution centres next to the Murcia airport, creating 200 jobs in the first phase. When it expands its facilities, the creation of a total of 1,000 jobs is expected. The 48,000 square meter facilities are being built in the Southeast Logistics Park, next to the MurciaCartagena highway, an excellent location. In addition, the logistics centre will have a warehouse of 8,000 square metres for the distribution of products. Amazon’s new logistics centre in Murcia will begin operations in May. The second phase of the expansion will take place in the medium term, and it is

THE rate of organ donors in Muria is 15 points above the national average. The hospitals of the region of Murcia registered an organ donor rate of 15 points above the national average in 2019. This has allowed almost 400 transplants to be carried out in the province during the last year.
Organ donor rise Of these transplants, 222 were tissue transplants and 174 organ transplants, 4 per cent more than last year. Most of the transplants
performed are from liver, bone marrow, kidney and cornea. In addition, the Minister of Health, Manuel Villegas, explained that
during 2019 a total of 95 multiorgan donations were made. Villegas has appealed to the responsibility of the media to sensitise society in terms of organ donations. He noted the rate of family refusal to donate organs is 9 per cent in the region of Murcia, six points below the national average.
Two new courts against abuse WITH the aim of optimising the response of institutions to sexist violence, the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) has agreed to the specialisation of 33 criminal courts for the prosecution and execution of issues of violence against women, as well as the creation of seven new judicial bodies of this type, two of
them in Alicante. With this proposal all provinces would have at least one specialised criminal court. During 2019, Spanish criminal courts prosecuted more than 30,000 people for crimes of gender violence and handed down more than 29,000 sentences. The adoption of this proposal would help to optimise the response of the institutions to
sexist violence. The technical bodies of the CGPJ consider that it is really necessary to create new specialised judicial bodies due to the high number of criminal cases. In this way, the two new courts of Alicante would assume the prosecution and execution of gender violence issues exclusively.

Women’s Race grows THE Women’s Race of Murcia 2020 has received a great reception and continues to grow. The recreational sporting event that will be held on March 8 from 9.30am has already exceeded 2,500 entries in less than 10 days, of the 5,000 available numbers for female runners. The race will have a five-kilometre course, which can be done walking or running, and all women over 12 years old and who are correctly enrolled can participate. All participants will be given a commemorative shirt of the 2020 edition, the number, a chip and runner’s bag. After the race, at 12.00, the march of International Women’s Day will be celebrated on the Gran Vía of Murcia. In this way, all runners will have time to join both events.

Alicante airport numbers down A TOTAL of 743,713 passengers passed through the AlicanteElche Airport during the past month of January, which represents a decrease of 5.3 per cent compared to January 2019. According to Aena, this decrease “reflects
the incidence that it had on the airport operation with the closure to 24-hour air traffic, on the occasion of the fire of the terminal cover on January 15 and the subsequent closure from 1.00pm on the 19th until 5.00am on the 21st, by effects of Storm Gloria,
which joined the poor state of the facilities.� The incidents suffered on the Costa Blanca in January caused 492 flights to be cancelled, of which 421 were rescheduled at the Murcia International Airport and the Valencia Airport. Alicante airport

The occasion comprised of two significant events, a one-day seminar for Branch Chairmen and other Senior Officials, which was followed on the second day by the Annual Conference itself . Other notable guests attending the event included Paul Harris QGM, Trustee and Vice Chairman of the RBL Membership Council, Bob Chambers the Overseas Representative, Kate Green the Overseas Area Manager and the British Vice-Consul Alicante, Sara Munster hjelm who was particularly delighted to attend the event, she remarked, as the venue was only a 10-minute walk from her home. RBL Conference focuses on local Recruiting and training, after which there were contributions from Paul Harris QGM, Bob Chambers and Kate Green. Attendees went away with lots of information to pass down to their branches The following day saw the Annual Conference attended by over 40 Branch officers as well as the representatives from UK, Belgium and the British
Vice Consul. After introductions and welcomes Sara Munsterhjelm took to the floor where she spoke of the work undertaken by the Consulate, from Brexit to planning and communication, not only in support of residents and the effects of DANA, but to holidaymakers who had emergencies and problems of their own. She confirmed the news on Brexit, approved by Royal Decree, regarding the rights of expats in Spain, health care, pensions and pension uprating, which are all guaranteed for those legally registered by the end of 2020. She also spoke about the transfer of UK driving licences, finally
recommending that expats ensure that their UK Passports are kept in date. She said that the Consulate is delighted to support the RBL in Spain and very much appreciates the valuable work carried out within the expat community. The Chairman updated attendees on RBL membership and the new branch in Altiplano. He spoke of the three-year plan, operational excellence and training courses as well as the need for more recruitment. Welfare appealed for additional caseworkers, hospital, home visitors and telephone buddies advising that it had dealt with 350 needy cases and 200 incidents during the year.
Paul Harris, Trustee and member of the Membership council, spoke of worldwide membership and support to veterans, which is provided in 22 countries, involving 120,000 volunteers. He said that over 24,000 grants were awarded in 2019. The District Poppy Appeal Coordinator, Andrew Richardson, announced the total collected in District North was €156,791.46 and that the launch of the 2020 Poppy Appeal will take place in Benidor m on Friday October 16, 2020. The Chocolate Museum of Villajoyosa celebrates its 20th anniversary THE Valor Chocolate Museum, located in the town of Villajoyosa (Alicante) celebrates its 20 years with a new space dedicated to cocoa that aims to ‘awaken the senses of the visitor.’ During these two decades, more than 1.5 million visitors have passed through this museum. In this centre, tourists can enjoy the history and curiosities of chocolate. Chocolates Valor has indicated in a statement that in the last year the museum has exceeded 90,000 visits, so they have decided to expand their facilities with a new area of 200 square metres. Here visitors can get to know all the curiosities about the chocolate
world interactively, offering two modern spaces located next to the entrance of the old family factory of the 19th century. In this way, in the first room there is an exhibition focused on the origins of cocoa, its mythology and all kinds of information about this amazing plant and its fruits. In addition, visitors can approach a table where they expose ingredients that can be seen and smell in their purest form, such as beans, cocoa butter, hazelnuts, almonds or vanilla. This exhibition would be guided by a narration and light effects, offering an experience as succulent as an immersive. In the second room there is a small cinema
where the story of Chocolates Valor is projected, from the origins of the brand founded in 1881. The visit ends with the exhibition of the old family factory, a tour of the current facilities of the brand and a chocolate tasting at the exclusive Valor store. In the collection of the exhibition stand out utensils of more than 500 years old, as well as chocolate machinery in perfect condition. The museum was inaugurated by the reporter Miguel de la Quadra Salcedo and since then it has been visited by more than 1.5 million people, including the kings of Spain. They visited it in 2006 on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of Chocolates Valor.
Parhelion in Alicante: A beautiful optical phenomenon over the city ON Tuesday February 11 and Wednesday February 12, a parhelion could be seen in the skies of Alicante. This optical oddity is produced by the refraction of light under very specific weather conditions. Some people confused this phenomenon with a strange rainbow, but in reality it is the effect of light on ice particles in
cirrus clouds. Parhelions are very close to the halos, manifesting themselves as bright and colourful spots in the sky, and are only visible for a few minutes. A parhelion is a beautiful optical effect that has already been seen several times in the province of Alicante. The first documented parhelion dates from April 20, 1535 in Stockholm.

Chancellor in a separate interview said that whilst a staunch Remainer, he now realised that it was a mistake and that the party should have understood the mood of the country. At the time, he was convinced that the indication of a referendum would convince Labour supporters to vote as they would normally do but in the end, it became clear that Boris Johnson won so convincingly because the tide of opinion agreed that Brexit should just be pushed through. Now various Labour party ‘names’ are revealing that they warned against being seen to support a second referendum and that Labour should have looked to appease their high percentage of leave supporting voters. As members appear to be blaming each other for the reason that they were so soundly trounced, it seems that the continued support that Sir Keir Starmer is giving to the policy could backfire on him as he endeavours to take over from Jeremy Corbyn.

THE aid for the payment of water and sewerage may be requested in Elche from February 17 until April 3. The councillor for Social Rights, Mariano Valera, reminded all the residents of Elche that as of Monday, February 17, the period for requesting payment aid for the water and sewerage receipt is opened thanks to the Social Water Fund 2020 and of the new Social Sewer Fund. This fund of the joint venture Aigües d’Elx is a resource of the Department of Social Rights to support families that are in a situation of social exclusion and economic precariousness. Valera has also recalled that this year the consignment for these grants has increased by €100,000, so in 2020 the grants will reach €350,000. With this amount the government team intends to help more than 4,200 families to pay their water bill.

WATER GRANTS OPEN
WATER FUND: Will help to support families in a situation of social or economic crisis. The councillor said that last year 4,500 applications were submitted, of which 4,120 were approved. The rest were denied because they exceeded the maximum income indicated to request this help. In addition, he has also declared that a total of 849 of the approved files
were derived by social workers. This initiative helps the long-term unemployed, pensioners and large families. The rest of the people who want to access the aid have as reference the IPREM in 14 payments of €7,519 and other special conditions, such as when there is a
person with disabilities in the house or the applicant is part of the group of women victims of gender violence. The councillor has clarified that this year there will be a unique opportunity to request this aid, which began on Monday, February 17 and will end on April 3, 2020.

Good Samaritan A YOUNG man who stepped in to defend a young woman being attacked by her partner in Murcia had his face beaten to a pulp after the aggressor turned on him. The attack in the early hours of Saturday night at the entrance to a disco was so brutal it left 23-yearold Raul unconscious on the ground. He told Spanish press the aggressor had kept on hitting him until he ‘got tired.’ Raul has since had to undergo an eye operation due to the injuries he sustained. The youngster from Puente Tocinos reportedly went to the woman’s assistance after hearing the sounds of blows and screams coming from an alleyway. He recognised the 20-year-old attacking the woman and asked him to stop, but was told to keep his nose out of the couple’s business. Raul told Spanish media that at this point the aggressor banged the woman’s head against a van. He tried to diffuse the situation once again, inviting the 20-year-old to a drink inside. At this point, the aggressor grabbed Raul’s arms and started punching him. Raul’s friends told him the beating went on for several minutes after he was laid out on floor. Fan Futura Fest: The music festival of San Javier THE Murcian municipality of San Javier will host a new music festival this summer. The first edition of this event will be held from July 21 to 26 and will be focused on electronic music, Indie and the most urban trends. The first confirmed artists of the Fan Futura Fest are Carolina Durante, Delaporte and The Parrots, as well as Dellafuente, Maikel Delacalle and Nervo, among other renowned musicians. In

EUTHANASIA TO BE APPROVED THE PSPV-PSOE claims that the new euthanasia law will be approved in June. The socialist deputy for Alicante, Yolanda Seva, has argued that the law of euthanasia that began its legislative process last week consolidates rights and freedoms for all Spanish citizens. In addition, Seva also highlighted the broad social support of this law, indicating that seven out of 10 citizens are in favour of the regulation of euthanasia, according to the Centre for Sociological Research (CIS) studies. The committees that will ensure compliance with these regulations in each autonomous community are still unknown
EUTHANASIA LAW: The right to end one’s pain. and have not yet been determined in the case of the Valencian Community. However, the provincial secretary of Health of the PSPV-PSOE, Rosa Louis Cereceda, has assured that the Valencian control committee will be multidisciplinary. Both political leaders have recalled that this law is aimed at those
persons of legal age who suffer from a serious and incurable illness or who suffer from a serious, chronic and disabling illness. In order for doctors to proceed to euthanasia, the patient must request it twice in writing. The law now has to go through the Senate, and Seva is confident that by June it will finally be approved. The two socialist
women have declared that the law of euthanasia extends rights, does not obligate anyone, professionals or patients. However, it allows a person who suffers an irreversible, chronic, serious, disabling illness that produces intolerable suffering to have the right to end that pain. On the other hand, Cereceda has stressed that health professionals who do not want to practise euthanasia may exercise their conscientious objection. However, she believes that most doctors support this rule. It is still unknown if the law will apply in all Valencian hospitals or only in some centres.
BRAND NEW: The basketball court uses recycled glass.
Glass court open THE brand-new basketball court that opened in Murcia last week is in the Prince of Asturias Pavilion and is the second to be installed in Spain. The court has dimensions of 28 metres long, 15 metres wide. The initiative has been promoted by Ecovidrio, the regional government and the Basketball Federation of the region of Murcia. For its production, more than 18 tons of glass were collected in special ball-shaped containers that were installed last autumn in 12 municipalities of Murcia. The track has been manufactured exclusively with recycled glass with
a resin finish. The mayor of Murcia, JosĂŠ Ballesta, has stated that, in addition to being a sign of sustainable development, this initiative serves to promote sports and healthy living. The campaign began on October 28 last year and has allowed the development of awareness work throughout the region. In Murcia, talks were also offered in 16 schools, reaching more than 1,500 students. The mayor highlighted that the recycling of glass helps in the fight against climate change and reduces the CO2 emission of its manufacturing process.

THE Guardia Civil has managed to dismantle a criminal group consisting of five people, between 19 and 50 years of age and Spanish nationality, who allegedly committed at least four robberies in Cartagena. The officers recovered a large number of stolen objects that have been returned to their owners. The thefts began in the middle of last January, when members of the ROCA Team (team to combat robberies in rural areas) of the Spanish Guardia Civil detected the commission of several burglaries with force in properties on the outskirts of the port city, according to sources from the Guardia Civil. This operation is framed in the Plan against home theft.

Criminal group dismantled

The alleged criminals scaled the properties and broke doors or windows to enter inside, causing considerable material damage to the facilities. The Guardia Civil have recovered much of the stolen objects in these centres and secondhand shops, which were returned to their owners after being brought to justice. Some of the detainees had a record for similar crimes and have been taken to the Cartagena investigating court.
DIGITAL TV: Antennas on buildings will need to be retuned.
TDT CHANGE ALERT ALMOST 40,000 collective antennas located in the centre and south of the region of Murcia must be adapted before June 30 by the digital terrestrial television (DTT) frequency shutdown. These frequencies should be free for Fifth Generation (5G) telecommunications networks. On Monday, February 17, the frequency change on digital terrestrial television began in the municipalities whose antennas are oriented to the broadcasting centres of Ă guilas, Carrascoy, Cartagena, Isla Plana and Orange Lorca II, which have a population of more than one million inhabitants. The need to adapt the antennas will only affect buildings and
not individual homes, where televisions will only need to be retuned. The Council of Ministers approved in June 2019 a consignment of â‚Ź145 million to balance out the costs of adapting the facilities and aid is also planned for television channels. Applications to receive aid, which will be managed by the public company Red.es, may be submitted online until September 30, 2020, after having previously made the adaptation of the DTT signal reception facilities, between June 1, 2019 and September 30, 2020. For this purpose, it will be necessary to present supporting documentation, such as the invoice and the installation bulletin.

FIGHT AGAINST SQUATTERS THE spokeswomen of PP, Mari Carmen of Spain, and Ciudadanos, Mari Carmen Sánchez of Alicante City Council, have signed a combined Institutional Declaration so that in the next plenary session the Consell is asked to urge the central gover nment to introduce the necessary modifications to the Spanish Penal Code to fight against illegal occupation of homes. It is also intended that this crime be punished more severely and facilitate the eviction of illegally occupied homes by public authorities within a maximum period of 12 hours. Right now, the illegal occupation of real estate is punishable by a fine of three to six months. If unauthorised occupation occurs with violence or intimidation, a prison sentence of one to two years is imposed. The explanatory statement of the Institutional Declaration indicates that the city of Alicante attracts millions of visitors every year thanks to its privileged climate and its beaches, and many of

In addition, it also indicates that ‘we must distinguish squatting by people in situations of vulnerability and that which is carried out by organised crime.’ According to PP and Cs, ‘despite the latest legislative reforms have tried to ensure that squatters can be evicted in a more agile way, allowing owners to go to the civil route and not only to the criminal, the process remains long and distressing for the owners.’ As a result, many times squatters leave the house themselves, but having caused serious damage to the property. This is coupled with the problem that squatting often involves the installation of illegal businesses with marihuana plantations in which ‘illegal hook ups’ are used in public lighting that can end up with serious accidents, such as fires. The government team recognises administrations are not being efficient to find a solution to this problem, and often the solution is left in homeowner’s hands.

Desertification faced by Murcia and Alicante A STUDY by researchers at the University of Alicante and published in the Science magazine indicates that, once certain levels of soil aridity have been overcome, the changes will not be proportional, but drastic. Arid lands make up 45 per cent of the planet’s non-aquatic surface and provides livelihood for almost 2.5 billion people through livestock or agriculture. These soils are especially sensitive to climate change. According to this investigation, the intensification of aridity will not occur gradually, as the temperature rises. Instead, this kind of terrain will respond to changes disproportionately, which will result in a more abrupt desertification than previously thought. The areas most exposed to this process are those that already have a more arid climate. In Spain, the most threatened areas are Alicante, Murcia and Almeria, as well as Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, according to the researchers. Vegetation productivity or the fertility of these soils react non-linearly to increases in aridity, such as those expected with climate change, but respond disproportionately.
• Three levels of desertification Three critical thresholds of aridity of ecosystems have been established in
the investigation. When one of them is reached, the intensification of the aridity accelerates in an increasingly abrupt way. According to Fernando Maestre, director of the Laboratory of Arid Zones and Global Change of the University of Alicante, responsible for research, the first threshold corresponds to levels of aridity similar to those in the Mediterranean area. On the other hand, the second threshold has similar values to those in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula, which results in a deterioration of vegetation development. In the third and most critical threshold there is a drastic fall in the coverage and diversity of plants, which ends up leading to the appearance of deserts. The conclusion of this study is that desertification of ecosystems is not a gradual process, but it increases dramatically
when each one of these three points of no return is exceeded. Researchers have indicated that in the year 2100 up to 18 per cent of the global land area will have passed through at least one of the three thresholds detected. In Spain the figure is higher, hovering between 60 per cent and 75 per cent of the country’s surface. This study will be essential to foresee, manage and minimise the climatic damage, since it is expected that there will be very serious reductions in plant diversity and coverage. According to Maestre, this will result in the degradation of the natural ecosystems of these areas and their desertification. Although life will not disappear from the most arid zones with climate change, it is important to be prepared for the changes that may occur.

SOME of Spain’s top young sailors are in Orihuela Costa this week to take part in a major national yachting event. The Costa Blanca destination is hosting the second edition of the 2020 Laser 4.7 Spanish championship until Sunday February 22. Organised by the Dehesa de Campoamor sailing club, the championship is, along with the Copa de España, one of the two events from which the RFEV Royal Spanish Sailing Federation selects its national teams for European and international events. It is therefore one of the most important events of the year for junior sailing talent, and one which attracts one of the highest numbers of participants. Some 120 under-18s from different teams around the country are in Orihuela to take part, accompanied by 25 trainers. There is also a team of 12 international judges, as well as technical staff and volunteers to help ensure

Creating opportunities ORIHUELA Council’s Youth department has launched a new edition of an initiative aimed at creating opportunities for local youngsters. The ‘Jove Oportunitat’ JOOP programme is directed at 16 to 21-yearolds who leave school without qualifications, “young people found behind the statistics for school dropouts,” explained Youth councillor Mar Ezcurra. The programme objectives are to change the young participants’ ways of thinking and acting, working on their attitudes and supporting them in building a life plan with achievable goals. They will receive intensive group and individual coaching. The idea is to encourage the young
people to reflect on what they want to do with their futures, to ensure they are capable of taking responsible, well thought-out decisions on their professional path, to look at how to improve their qualifications, and to make them aware that it takes time to be in the running for quality, long-term jobs. That is, that they take control of their lives. The councillor underlined the importance of the involvement of teachers and youth guides and professionals in the initiative “as it is they who know the young men and women best who need JOOP.” The JOOP programme is backed by the IVAJ Valencia Youth Institut and financed by European social funds.

Replacing a lost or expired British passport from Spain WITH Brexit just around the cor ner, if you have less than six months life left on your passport it would be a good i d e a t o re n e w s o o n e r r a t h e r than later. Quite often when different official forms are digitalised, it becomes more rather than less confusing and you need to have a degree in programming in order to proceed. For once however, the British government has made things much easier and far less complicated in applying for a replacement passport if yours has been lost or is about to expire. No longer do you need to supply lots of forms including birth certificates and to have a photograph physically signed on the back by someone who knows you and it really is now quite easy if you have access to a computer. Very simply visit https://www.gov. uk/overseas-passports and you’re taken through the whole process step by step and the only drawback is that there isn’t a single page detailing everything including costs as you have to go through a page at a time. There is however a passports link which does give quite a lot of information on the website, but not everything. Even if you have lost or had your passport stolen, you are not precluded for applying online for a replacement, but you have to declare it lost in advance also online. As a real bonus you can now use digital photograph and there are quite explicit rules about what is acceptable as you navigate the website and whilst it may take a couple of attempts, provided you remove any glasses and stand in front of a
white background, a selfie taken with a phone will probably work ok. If you are not happy using a phone camera, then most towns have at least one print shop where they can photograph you and give you a digital image on a memory stick or card. As you progress through the procedure you will be best served by having access to details of your previous passport, but it isn’t actually essential and the site does report back to a human in the UK who can check. When you post your photograph, you will be asked to give details (including email address) of a person of standing who can confirm that they know you and that the photograph is of you. The whole process can take up to six weeks from start to finish and this will include delivery via courier to your address in Spain and you have to pay with a debit or credit card for the cost of the passport (depends upon number of pages) and courier fee at the time of submitting the application online. You will be sent a special code which will allow you to track your passport through all of its stages. In the event that you have lost your passport and need a temporary replacement, that can also be done online. It is more expensive than a normal passport, is usually good for one round trip only and will normally be issued by the British Consulate in Malaga. For those without computers, it is still possible to apply through the post and there are even different shops with English-speaking staff scattered around Spain where for a fee they will help you complete the forms and send them off for you.

2000 New trees for schools MORE than 20,000 students from schools in the region of Murcia will enjoy new shadow spaces in their school centres. The Forestry Plan initiative will involve the planting of 2,000 new trees distributed in a hundred schools of Murcia. This plan promotes the involvement of citizens in the care of the environment, promoting it from the classroom and raising awareness among younger citizens. In fact, new trees have already been planted in some of the educational centres of Murcia thanks to this initiative. Likewise, among the proposals of the Forest Plan, there is also a doubling of the number of trees in the municipality, from 100,000 to 200,000

WALKING RACE: The event was attended by 500 athletes.
Walking Race THE 89th Spanish Race Walking Championship was held in Torrevieja last Sunday, February 16. This competition consists of five races and five different categories, being the 50kilometre race qualifying for the European Championship to be held in Minsk, as well as for the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020. Iván Pajuelo and Mar Juárez were the winners of this competition. They will be the last champions of Spain of the 50kilometre race, since in 2021 the longest distance will be 35 kilometres to adapt it to the official World Athletics programme. As a result of the race, Jesús Ángel García Bragado is shortlisted for the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020. In addition, Bragado, Marc Tur, Júlia Takács and Mar Juárez are already shortlisted for the Minsk European Championship. The fight for the title in the men’s 50-kilometres race category was decided to sprint. Pajuelo passed Álvaro Martín and third place on the podium went to Manuel
Bermúdez, followed by Mario Viñas and the local idol, Luis Manuel Corchete. The regional record-holder of Torrevieja was one of the favourites. The competition was attended by 500 athletes and about 1,500 people visited the city over the past weekend. In fact, many of the main hotel accommodations were complete last Sunday. This championship has been organised by the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation (RFEA), the Department of Sports of the City Council of Torrevieja and the Athletics Club of the city. It is the second time that Torrevieja hosts the Spanish Race Walking Championship, after its celebration in 1999. The two-kilometre approved circuit ran through the streets María Parodi, Ramón Gallud and Paseo de la Libertad. The organisation installed two screens along the route to facilitate the monitoring of the race to all attendees. In addition, a live streaming broadcast was also offered to all those who wanted to follow the event online.

Mar Menor given Budget for 2020 THE Mar Menor is in crisis due to degradation and pollution. The Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Environment, Antonio Luengo, has stated that, of the €311 million of the Regional Budget, €56 million will be used to undertake actions aimed at their protected recovery and subsequent protection. The government’s actions will focus on university research and the development of eight strategic projects, such as autochthonous filters, bioreactor rafts and biomass cleaning and removal. More initiatives will also be carried out

Controversy THE controversy over the parental pin continues to increase. The president of the region of Murcia, Fernando López Miras, has reiterated that the Ministry of Education will not withdraw the parental pin unless required by the judicial authorities. The parental pin implies that parents with underage children must issue authorisations since September for their children to attend complementary activities in schools. López Miras defends the decision taken to impose the parental pin is legal and that it has favourable reports from the legal services of the counselling and the educational inspection. The Ministry of Education gave a period of one month, which expired on Monday, February 17, to remove the parental pin. Otherwise, the government will take the case to court.

THERE could be lawsuits worth mil lions of euros flying around Barcelona following the very late cancellation of one of the world’s largest mobile phone exhibitions apparently due to the Coronavirus. Two weeks ago it was reported that one of the largest stand holders at the World Mobile Congress, Sam sung of South Korea, had pulled out of the show in order to ensure that their staff were not exposed to po tential danger leaving a huge hole. Then as others started debating whether or not to continue to partici pate, the organisers GSMA which has

‘force majeure’ as neither the World Health Organisation nor the Catalan government instructed them to can cel the show. One official commented that the action appeared to be because of fear of an outbreak, because at the time no individuals had been infected. In such a scenario, should the insur ance taken out by the stand holders (and those booked to speak at the WMC) not cover them, it seems most likely that they will seek redress from GSMA. Lawyers will already be gathering to give advice to all concerned.
AENA, the company which man ages airport facilities around the world and whose biggest share holder is the Spanish government has contracts to take over control at six Brazilian airports. The contract is believed to be worth €404 million to the compa ny and it has vowed to ensure that each site will be as energy efficient as possible with the in troduction of renewable sources, especially solar power. It has also pledged to spend €250 million to clean up and up grade the electric supply at the airports it manages in Spain.

I have just read your piece in the EWN and found it very infor mative but wondered if you could clarify your last sentence. ‘The majority must include the Quotas or Par ticipation Shares.’ What are they? M S (Costa Blanca) The Law of Horizontal Property notes that YOU AND THE a measure will be LAW IN SPAIN passed by ‘A majori ty of owners who at the same time represent the majority of property shares.’ This concept of ‘double majority’ needs explanation. Each owner has one vote as an owner of a property. He also has another vote, which is weighted according to his share in the total property. This is your quota. For example, if there are 100 flats all the same size, each owner will have a par ticipation share of 1 per cent. This percentage determines your community fee. Problems can arise when one owner has a very large property and so he has a large participation share. His vote counts for more. In communities with flats of various sizes and thus various quotas, the picture gets more complicated. I hope this clears up the issue.

Sustainable fresh fish WITH more than 340 fresh fish counters in its stores, Spanish supermarket chain, Eroski, has to purchase large amounts of all types of fish on an annual basis. Wherever possible it obtains sus tainable products and has just an nounced that in 2019 it purchased 3,144 tons of fish which was certi fied by one or other of the recog nised authorities. According to the supermarket, more than 1,800 tons were certi fied as coming from sustainable grounds by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and a further 800 tons were approved by GLOBALG.AP with their GGN seal. LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT SOMETHING really has to be done about these ludicrous ‘human rights.’ To be honest I don’t even know what the term actually means. And there of course lies the true problem. The more obscure and complicated any point of law can actually be, the more the money grabbing lawyers can exploit them - which of course make them the last people on earth who would want them clarified. In fact, complexity and confusion in matters of law, is like money in the bank for this unscrupulous bunch of legal parasites. This latest fiasco once again brought the whole disgraceful debacle on to the front pages. Last week 42 Jamaican nationals were due to be deported after being convicted of offences ranging from manslaughter and firearms to rape and drugs. Lawyers (who else) stepped in and said that a large number of them shouldn’t be deported because their ‘uman rites’ had been denied.

HUMAN RIGHTS: To be honest, I don’t even know what the term actually means. How? Wait for it. They hadn’t been able to get a signal on their mobile phones to ring their - yes you’ve guessed it - lawyers! The legal Mafia, no doubt riding high on tax payers’ money; subsequently presented their case and the judge agreed. Because of the mobile phone fiasco, 25 of these toe rags couldn’t be kicked out. No doubt these numbskulls couldn’t get their heads around a landline!
The thing that once more emerges from the actions of these legalised con merchants is they yet again find themselves in a win win situation. The lawyers of course never lose. Well it’s about time they were curbed. From their persecution of our brave servicemen, to getting murderers and rapists released back on the streets, these people are not interested in justice, all they are interested in are their
own self-centered ends - and the human rights laws are a licence for them to print (tax payers’) money. Well I think that these ‘rights’ should be resolved during the trial. Judges, in the sentencing of those who have totally ignored the human rights of their victims, should have the power to decree human rights ‘denied’ or ‘minimal’ human rights. Lawyers receiving legal aid remuneration from the public purse
should have their fees capped at a reasonable level. Weed out the ambulance chasers and those without any moral conscience whatsoever and their illgotten gains could be put toward the branches of law and order that put the law abiding public first. Not as a means for lawyers to buy another villa in the south of France. It’s all about money isn’t it? The Saudis have the means, the space and the money, to lay a temporary airfield right next to those poor suffering Kurdish civilian refugees. They could easily build a vast tented camp in their country and fly every one of their innocent fellow Sunnis out in a month. But they won’t will they? This spoiled bunch of utter wasters would rather bribe and blackmail the West to totally leave them out of the whole refugee crisis altogether. Money over morals. Never ends does it. IN a recent speech, NHS boss Sir Simon Stevens hit out at ‘quacks, charlatans and cranks’ who spread fake news about health on social media including Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle brand Goop for selling products with no proven health benefits. It has always surprised me that actors or actresses who have become celebrities for basically reading and performing the lines and instructions of screenplay writers and directors are given such a seal of approval for their opinions on topics completely unrelated to their sphere of activity. Generally speaking, you’d need to justify your views on any subject by demonstrating your qualifications, experience or abilities applicable to the subject matter. They seem to have been given a platform to speak from that goes

way beyond their qualifications, knowledge or expertise. As for products such as Goop’s, they’re based on a motley combination of three eternal myths: they promise ‘The Fountain of Youth’; they’re ‘The Panacea for Everything’ or they contain ‘Mystery Ingredient X.’ Often backed up by scientific-sounding words (‘Lab’ in this case), or anecdotal plugs. But why is this ‘quackery’ (in Sir Simon’s own words) even allowed to boom in the modern era? People are so gullible, easily taken in by superstars who are the only winners making millions out of such unproven nonsense. Naturally, fake news thrives while evidence is tossed aside as irrelevant. What would happen if NHS
doctors rejected evidence-based medicine and turned to such unsubstantiated practices? They’d be rightly struck off, certainly not filling their coffers with their spoils. Trump and Paltrow are effectively doing the same thing. They’re offering hope and fulfilment to the ill-informed and those in despair through simple solutions that are patently not evidence based. However, on a positive note, I’m sorry that Sir Simon failed to acknowledge the health benefits that this silly woman has brought by adding to the joy of the nation at her antics. “Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I’m not sure about the former.” Albert Einstein. Pleasant CODE OF THE ROAD journey
EURO WEEKLY, I recently read that young people in Malaga are classed as the worst drivers and wondered how Spain fairs as a whole? As a pedestrian and cyclist I just can’t get over the lack of rules of the road out here. Do people literally just not care or are the police too busy catching Eastern European drugs gangs they just don’t have the time to enforce traffic laws. I have been in a car that was stopped once, because the car had French plates, my friend was fined for a silly made up charge. However, most evenings I will see absolute idiots ripping through the towns at ridiculous speeds and I live close to two police stations but have never seen any Spanish people stopped. Is it the driver’s fault or years worth of lazy police work? Oh and don’t even get me started on parking!! Why would anybody invest in a new car here only to have it bounced back and forward whilst a local makes himself a space?

I live part of the year in Spain where we have a townhouse in Fuengirola. If only our country treated foreigners the same as the Spanish, we are given nothing and are expected to conform to Spanish law. I wonder, in your column, if you could ask if there is one English family living in Spain in a council house and claiming benefits? I would be interested to know. Keep up the good work. PS. An approved Mental Health Practitioner should have been appointed to assess the girl’s mental health and her capacity. If she’s already on (prescribed) medication, her own GP should have referred her to a WellBeing Clinic at least. Her parents should also have tak en responsibility as well. I know the girl is over 18, but even so they should have recog nised she needed help. It’s no excuse for what she has done, but surely we are trying to create a caring society… Someone should step in about the girl’s mental health and get to the root cause of her behaviour? SO, it seems Meghan and Harry are on a full throttle cull at the moment. First her family, then the royal family and now their faithful staff. Have they never heard the saying that you should not bite the hand that feeds you? Historically people would claim to be loyal subjects to the royal family but it seems that loyalty is very far from the young couple’s minds. Should you push away every part of your life to concentrate on a new life with a loved one? Should it all go wrong and they have a change of heart will they have well and truly burnt all the bridges behind them? With the recent news of the staff being axed will this bloodbath drive a wedge between the two and any respect people may have for them. Sources have pointed out that the couple have decided to hire a team of US-based agents and publicists, many of whom worked for Meghan when she was an actress. The couple have been organising private engagements and briefings with the US team and hired a Canadian designer to create a new website without any involvement from the royal advisers. Maybe we should wish them well and send them on their merry way and hope that neither come home with their tail between their legs.

Are they really anti-animal? MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man O K f o l k s h e re ’s t h e l a t e s t bonkers suggestion. If I didn’t know better I’d have thought it was April Fool’s day. PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, has launched a campaign to end ‘anti-animal’ sayings like ‘kill two birds with one stone’ and ‘bring home the bacon.’ Are they anti-animal? Has some budgie complained it’s offended? ‘Just as it became unacceptable to use racist, homophobic, or ableist language, phrases that trivialise cruelty to animals will vanish as more people begin to appreciate animals for who they are and start ‘bringing home the bagels’ instead of the bacon,’ PETA wrote on Twitter. Yup you read it correctly. In another tweet, the organisation gave alternative language to such phrases to help people ‘remove speciesism’ from their conversations. Instead of ‘kill two birds with one stone,’ people should now say ‘Feed two birds
with one scone.’ ‘Take the flower by the thorns’ should replace ‘Take the bull by the horns.’ What is happening for goodness sake? All you groups like PETA just stop because all you are going to do is distract from all the good things you do. I’ve been getting a ridiculous amount of emails telling me I’ve either got a load of money coming to me or do this or that to stop a load of money being taken from me. They are all, of course, scams. I have so many Nigerian Princes and Government Ministers throwing dosh at me at the moment. It must work with some people or they wouldn’t keep doing it, but not with me or any of you. One that I must admit made me have a double take was from Pay Pal, or purporting to be, telling me ‘Act now, or your account will be deactivated.’ or ‘Security breach on your account.’ This, of course, can cause you to panic, but when you look it’s not from PayPal at all. The biggest giveaway is it’s not actually addressed to you. It says ‘Dear valued customer’ whereas any genuine company will always use your name. Oh and finally a bit of good news. I finally got my Spanish driving licence which I applied for last May. RESULT!

A stronger core also will help to improve your posture and overall sports performance as all the body’s muscles are connected through the core, so this w i l l
make your movements sharper and help you run faster. It’s also easier on your joints than other workouts as the slow, controlled movements cause minimal impact. One of the major benefits of practising Pilates is the wonders it does to your flexibility, which can improve your body’s range of motion and, therefore, your exercise performance. A study that followed young Brazilian women, without any prior experience, as they attended 20 Pilates sessions showed they became 19.1 per cent more flexible by the end of the research.

The third highest price paid for a work by the artist. Executed in 1966 this landmark pool painting first appeared at auction at Sotheby’s in London in 1973 and again in 2006 when it sold for £2.9 million, a record for a a Hockney at that time. Nine of the top 10 prices for Hockney have been set in the past two years. One of he most iconic images of the 20th century Hockney’s composition of a still swimming pool shattered by an invisible figure creating the splash. ‘The Splash’ is certainly one of the most recognised images of the last 100 years and more or less defines what we all think of as modern or contemporary art. Banksy’s ‘Vote to Love’ more than doubled its pre-sale estimate when the bidding soared to £1,155,00. The work was prominently displayed at the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition of 2018 with a price tag of £350 million, a refer-

But on February 7, I finally seized the phone and called our vet to ask her to euthanise Bijou, a Patterdale terrier that we acquired along with his lifelong companion - a mini-Pinscher called Fifi - from a rescue home about nine years ago. We reckoned that Bijou was about seven when we made the decision to adopt, so it was hardly surprising that he started showing signs of old age towards the end of last year. His main problem was arthritis. When he began howling in pain, I called mobile vet Natalia Diaz Tejon and she prescribed medication that helped alleviate the symptoms. But at the beginning of the year, he became unsteady on his legs and very disorientated.

In the year of his 100th birthday Wayne Thiebaud’s Californian ‘Fruit Stand’ achieved a delicious £1,815,000. Having remained in the same European collection since the 1960s this auction follows on to a record-breaking sale of the artist work at Sotheby’s New York sale room last November. The ‘Fruit Stand’ was executed in 1963 being a view of a fruit stand on a hot summer’s day. Reinventing the traditional ‘still life’ form to reflect the age of mass production and mass consumption. Wayne Thiebaud’s mastery of colour is spoken of in terms that place his work among those renowned artists and maters of colour of Paul Cezanne and
Pierre Bonnard of an earlier epoch. Unlike his contemporaries Andy Warhol with cans of soup or Roy Lichtenstein and Claes Oldenburg, Thiebaud’s aim was not to criticise post war American society but rather to celebrate it. Heart-breaking: The final farewell
CHERISHED COMPANIONS: We let our pets die with dignity. When he lost control of his bladder, I knew the time had come to say farewell, and on February 10 Natalia arrived with her killing kit and Bijou went to sleep in my arms. Did I weep? Of course. But the real sorrow that I expressed
on Facebook when I reported on Bijou’s death was that it was utterly shameful that we can let out pets die with dignity, but are denied the same right to help human lives that are no longer worth living. Two years later I was
elated to read that Spain is well on track to legalising euthanasia and assisted suicide. A law may be passed by the coalition government as soon as June. There’s been a lot of whinging, as one would expect, from the Catholic Church, but mercifully Spain no longer tolerates religious interference in its political and social affairs. Moreover, a survey in 2017 showed 84 percent of Spaniards support euthanasia. On a personal note, while I was still in the UK, I vigorously campaigned for voluntary euthanasia as well as for the decriminalisation of drugs. But despite the fact that more than 90 per cent of the UK’s population believe assisted dying should be legalised for those suffering from terminal illnesses, mainly religious opposition has seen seen every effort to introduce euthanasia
rejected out of hand by successive governments. One of the most vociferous opponents of euthanasia is devout Catholic Lord Alton of Liverpool, who in 2014, uttered this claptrap when he addressed the Oxford Union: ‘Euthanasia diminishes the dignity and humanity of the sick and elderly and diminishes those of us who condone it.’ No, you imbecile, it does not. When I posted his words on my Freethinker website, a woman commented: ‘Only someone who has never seen someone die of a terminal disease could say something so breathtakingly cruel. It does not surprise me that someone with that attitude would be a forced-birther.’ The ‘forced birther’ remark was prompted by the fact that David Alton is also a fanatical anti-abortionist, and wants Gibraltar to retain its current law that can see a woman jailed for life for terminating a pregnancy. Compassion, bodily autonomy and dignity are concepts completely alien to religious fanatics like Alton, and it’s high time they were hounded out of all positions of influence.

Get your kicks on NOW in his early 60’s, Spanish singer, guitarist and songwriter Pancho Varona has vowed to play in 52 different parts of Spain in a tour entitled Route 52 and has so far appeared in 20 provinces around the country. This April sees him performing his very personal show which highlights his career in San Juan de Alicante and Murcia City. He is best known in Spain for working for many years with Joaquin Sabina and composed more than 100 numbers for him as well as 13 for Ana Belén
and other artists including himself for his solo album. This tour sees him look back over his career in music and he will be playing some of his most popular numbers, mainly pop rock. With a passion for music and collaborating with new talent, he will be inviting local musicians to open each concert. April 3 will see him perform at the Sala Euterpe San Juan de Alicante with tickets costing €12 and on April 4 he is at the Café Alba Murcia City with entry €15.

Film Symphony Orchestra LIKE many former communist states, the Czech government encouraged the performance of classical music and one of its orchestras was the Czech Symphony Orchestra which specialised in recording film soundtracks. After the breakdown of the regime, it became known as the Film Symphony Orchestra (FSO) and now a number of young yet highly trained musicians form their own Spanish-based FSO under the baton of charismatic and flamboyant conductor Constantino Martínez-Orts, to perform great music from the movies. It’s a ground breaking concept (which is now being copied by other orchestras) that sees a professional symphony orchestra perform with a background of visual effects, light shows and sometimes costumed actors giving a perfor-

Every year they embark on a 50 stop tour of Spain and they are currently working their way around the country and return to Costa Blanca again after performances in Murcia, Cartagena and Torrevieja. THE Royal British Legion Concert Band (RBLCB) will be holding a special memorial concert in Torrevieja on March 29 to commemorate the life of founder member of the band Bill Singleton who died last September. Starting at 7pm in the Centro Cultural Virgen del Carmen, the concert will include a selection of light classical music as well as popular numbers from musicals under the direction of David Last. Accompanying the band will be three choirs, Studio 32 Theatre Group, Spangles Ladies Harmony Chorus, Crescendo Choir as well as Michelle Dance Group from the UK, Francisca Sanper and her Spanish Dancers and the Torrevieja Pipes

Spicy Veggie Spaghetti NOT another meat free pasta dish I hear my keen carnivore readers cry? Well fear not my meat and fish eating friends, next week will see something to satisfy your craving for flesh. I’ve just been on a bit of a vegetable kick for the last couple of weeks. Not for any virtue signalling moral reason, there just seemed to be a lot of veg in the house, so it needed using up. This dish is good for any tomatoes or peppers that have been hanging around and need using up. Put the oven on quite low (about 150ºC). Put a little olive oil in a baking dish. Cut up a tomato, red and green peppers, a few whole garlic cloves, onion, spring onion, chilli peppers (anything you want to get rid of!). Place in the dish, drizzle with more oil, season with flakes of sea salt and ground black pepper. Place in the oven and roast for an
hour or so. Check every now and then and if the peppers are starting to blacken turn the temperature down a bit. Take out the oven and let the mixture go cold. It will keep in the fridge for a couple of days.
When needed give the mixture a good bashing in a pestle and mortar. I added to a pan with cubes of fried aubergine. Add some cooked spaghetti. Feel free to adorn with parmesan if you’re not a vegan!

PETS ERIC and Ern are two rescue dogs from Almeria. Their owner Barbara adopted them together as puppies. She has had them for three years and they helped her make a home while she was settling into life in Spain. In turn she helped to make a home for them. Villa Late Error Costs Them Point ASTON VILLA were made to rue a late error as Tottenham won a barnstorming Premier League clash at Villa Park. Son Heung-min pounced on Bjorn Engels’ error to score a lastgasp winner as Tottenham won an enthralling Premier League contest 3-2 at Aston Villa. Engels’ equaliser appeared to have earned the relegationthreatened hosts a point at Villa Park, but his failure to control a long ball allowed Son to coolly steer past Pepe Reina. Son had earlier put Spurs 2-1 in front from the rebound of a penalty awarded as a result of an Engels foul shortly before half-time, the forward’s first in the game coming after teammate Toby Alderweireld had scored at both ends. Villa remain just a point above the bottom three, while Champions League-chasing Spurs are just one point adrift of fourth-place Chelsea.
Spurs went behind in sloppy fashion after nine minutes when Alderweireld turned in Anwar El Ghazi’s deflected right-wing cross having failed to communicate with his goalkeeper, Hugo Lloris. Jack Grealish tormented Spurs down the left channel and had a couple of testers before teeing up Douglas Luiz who, despite a great block from Ben Davies, ought to have scored. Arsenal Get Back On Track As They Fire In 4 ARSENAL were not wholly convincing for long periods at home to Newcastle United, but four second-half goals clinched all three points. Alexandre Lacazette scored for the first time since December to put the gloss on a much-needed 4-0 win for Arsenal and head coach Mikel Arteta against Newcastle United on Sunday. Arsenal came into the clash at Emirates Stadium level on points with visitors Newcastle, having won just six times in the Premier League this season - and only once since Arteta’s December appointment. But after a frustrating opening period, the influential Nicolas Pepe laid on a goal for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the 54th minute, and Pepe himself scored three minutes later to all but settle the contest. Mesut Ozil added another in the 90th minute, before substitute Lacazette got in on the act in stoppage time. Arteta, who revealed before the match he turned down an approach from Newcastle while still an assistant at Manchester City, could enjoy the closing stages of a precious victory, with Arsenal climbing back up to 10th and within sight of the European places. Newcastle’s set-pieces had caused early problems for Arsenal, and Sean Longstaff’s deflected strike forced a scram-

Man Utd Triumph Over Chelsea ANTHONY MARTIAL and Harry Maguire scored either side of half-time as Manchester United claimed a 2-0 triumph over Chelsea on Monday. Manchester United closed ground on the Champions League places as Anthony Martial and Harry Maguire struck to claim a vital 2-0 win over Chelsea, who were twice denied by VAR. Despite heading into Monday’s meeting at Stamford Bridge having taken just four points in 2020, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side moved to within a win of their opponents as they completed a Premier League double over Chelsea for the first time. Martial continued his excellent form against Chelsea to get United off the mark, with the Blues denied an equaliser through Kurt Zouma by the video review system. United made their luck count in the 66th minute with captain Maguire - who was perhaps fortunate to be on the pitch after an earlier clash with Michy Batshuayi heading in Bruno Fernandes’ corner and United held firm to secure valuable points after Olivier Giroud also saw a goal disallowed. Chelsea were inches away from taking a sixthminute lead when Reece James lashed wide, but Frank Lampard’s side
