A MOTRIL family has been dealt a tragic double blow after a woman died of a heart attack seconds after witnessing her father choke to death on a pill. The 85-year-old and his daughter, 54, died within minutes of each other, as the distraught wife and mother looked on helplessly. Emergency services were called to the family home in Calle Las Cruces of Motril at around 10.30pm on Monday night, after receiving reports the elderly victim was feeling unwell and unable to breathe. According to sources, paramedics were performing resuscitation manoeuvres on the pensioner when his daughter arrived, having been notified by her concerned mother. She is said to have suffered a cardiac arrest as her father passed away, when it was finally agreed nothing more could be done to save his life. For 40 minutes, para-

La Herradura Carnival 2020 LA HERRADURA Town Hall has announced the Carnival programme that the town will celebrate this weekend. On Saturday February 22 the Adult Carnival Contest will be held in the Plaza de la Independencia. It will be after the parade which will depart at 9.00pm from the Civic Centre. On Sunday from 12.00 the Carnival will be dedicated to the youngest ones with the celebration of the Children’s Carnival parade. There will be games, workshops and costume contests. From 9.00pm, the Civic Centre of La Herradura will host Carnivalesque Night, with the
performances of the group Los de Huelín, which has won the first prize of the Carnival Contest of Malaga 2020, and El Alcalde, troupe of Granada. Admission will be free.

NEARLY 2,000 farmers from different parts of Andalucia participated in a protest against the current low prices of olive oil and fruit and vegetable products in Antequera. Farmers are angered by the amounts imposed by large companies on their products. Tractors made their way to the A-92 motorway in Antequera (Malaga) under the slogan: ‘if the field dies, the city does not eat.’ It seemed as though it is another case of the rich taking from the poor, but that does not apply here as the Commonwealth of Municipalities of the Costa del Sol Axarquia support the protest march so that their demands are met.
A YEAR after it was announced Velez-Malaga’s new €2.7 million police station would ‘be open in a month’ a date has finally been agreed. station, on the ground floor of a residential building in Torre del Mar, opened in 1986, but proved too small for the 180 officers and staff. The new facility is located on a plot of 6,700 square metres, which was ceded by the City Council to the Ministry of Interior in 2009, in exchange for social housing in the Torreño core.

La Herradura to celebrate its Patron Saint’ s Festivities THE Deputy Mayor’s Office of La Herradura has announced the official poster of the Patron Saint’s Festivities that the town will celebrate from March 18 to 22. A TREATMENT campaign to control the numbers of processionary pine caterpillars has kicked off in Rincon de la Victoria Council. José María Gómez (PMP), said: “Normally we carry out a campaign of phytosanitary treatment during the autumn season to eradicate the caterpillars’ population before they end their cycle during the spring.”
Nerja plant NERJA Council and the town’s Sanitation Forum have demanded the new treatment plant is completed ‘after two decades of waiting.’ The central government indicated it would be finished this summer, but the local authorities fear this won’t be the case, alleging ‘neglect of the current ministerial leaders.’

SIXTY-NINE migrants, including a pregnant woman, were rescued by Maritime Rescue as they tried to reach the Granada coastline last Friday, February 14, before being taken to the Temporary Immigrant Shelter in Motril, and later transported to different locations in Spain. The Red Cross is caring for seven children and their mothers.

Colmenar fire A HOUSE fire in Colmenar has burnt down an entire property and left a man injured, suffering burns to his hands, as reported by the Emergency Services last week. The neighbours succeeded in raising an alert as soon as they noticed the fire of the two-storey single-family house on Calle Ladera. The firemen made every effort to completely extinguish the blaze, however, due to the aftermath, work continues on the site of the incident. Personnel of the Public Company of Sanitary Emergencies (Epes) rescued a 36-year-old man suffering from burns to the Carlos Haya hospital, while rushing to attend two others affected by smoke inhalation.

García Chamorro has indicated that the children’s films which will be broadcast are aimed especially at the youngest ones, but can also be enjoyed by the whole family, and has highlighted the free nature of these projections. The invitations may be picked up at the Consistory of Motril from February 18. The films ‘The Incredibles 2,’ ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet,’ ‘How to train your dragon 3’ and ‘Sherlock Gnomes’ will be screened on Sundays at 12:00 from February 23.

BARS: Were targeted for cash.
Man arrested for seven robberies THE National Police have arrested a man in VelezMalaga for his alleged involvement in seven violent robberies in bars, cafes and restaurants in the town, committed in recent months. The 50-year-old suspect took advantage of the night hours to enter the establishments. These robberies were aimed at cash registers, electronic devices and bottles of alcoholic beverages. In most cases, the alleged author entered the premises after forcing the access doors and then stole money from the cash registers, as well as other valuable objects. In a search conducted at the home of the arrested, the officers found the clothes that he apparently wore in one of the robberies. This investigation has allowed researchers to clarify seven violent robberies committed in the establishments of Velez-Malaga in the last few months.
IBI TAX: Looking for solutions.
THE PP of Velez-Malaga has asked for an extraordinary plenary session to look for a solution to the problem generated after the cancellation of municipal aid for the payment of Real Estate Tax (IBI) ordered by the Superior Court of Justice of Andalucia (TSJA). The town hall spokesman of this party, Francisco Delgado Bonilla, explained that, given the “mediocrity, irresponsibility and incompetence” demonstrated by
the government team (PSOE-GIPMTM), the PP will implement a proposal to solve “almost permanently” the problem with this aid. Delgado Bonilla has shown his discomfort at the accusations made by the mayor and the councillor of the Treasury, in which he appointed the PP as responsible for the procedure that led to the judicial ruling of the TSJA, which has declared the nullity of aid to the IBI to instance of the State Advocacy.
RECYCLING: Clothing and footwear is being given a second life.
The NGO Humana collects more than 204 tons of clothes THE Humana Fundación Pueblo para Pueblo association, dedicated to giving clothing a second life, has collected 204.3 tons of textile used in the Axarquia during 2019, which will be used for reuse or recycling. Donors deposited clothing, footwear, home textiles and accessories that they no longer used
in the green containers arranged by this association. The municipalities which have collected more clothes has been Velez-Malaga with 105.1 tons, followed by Rincon de la Victoria which has contributed with 83.8. The Human foundation has explained that 200 tons equals 459,000 garments, which implies an
environmental benefit by reducing waste and contributing to the fight against climate change. In addition, it also entails a social benefit with the creation of inclusive, stable and quality jobs. Humana generates an indefinite job for every 36,000 kilograms of textile collected, according to the NGO.

Replacing a lost or expired British passport from Spain WITH Brexit just around the cor ner, if you have less than six months life left on your passport it would be a good i d e a t o re n e w s o o n e r r a t h e r than later. Quite often when different official forms are digitalised, it becomes more rather than less confusing and you need to have a degree in programming in order to proceed. For once however, the British government has made things much easier and far less complicated in applying for a replacement passport if yours has been lost or is about to expire. No longer do you need to supply lots of forms including birth certificates and to have a photograph physically signed on the back by someone who knows you and it really is now quite easy if you have access to a computer. Very simply visit https://www.gov. uk/overseas-passports and you’re taken through the whole process step by step and the only drawback is that there isn’t a single page detailing everything including costs as you have to go through a page at a time. There is however a passports link which does give quite a lot of information on the website, but not everything. Even if you have lost or had your passport stolen, you are not precluded for applying online for a replacement, but you have to declare it lost in advance also online. As a real bonus you can now use digital photograph and there are quite explicit rules about what is acceptable as you navigate the website and whilst it may take a couple of attempts, provided you remove any glasses and stand in front of a
white background, a selfie taken with a phone will probably work ok. If you are not happy using a phone camera, then most towns have at least one print shop where they can photograph you and give you a digital image on a memory stick or card. As you progress through the procedure you will be best served by having access to details of your previous passport, but it isn’t actually essential and the site does report back to a human in the UK who can check. When you post your photograph, you will be asked to give details (including email address) of a person of standing who can confirm that they know you and that the photograph is of you. The whole process can take up to six weeks from start to finish and this will include delivery via courier to your address in Spain and you have to pay with a debit or credit card for the cost of the passport (depends upon number of pages) and courier fee at the time of submitting the application online. You will be sent a special code which will allow you to track your passport through all of its stages. In the event that you have lost your passport and need a temporary replacement, that can also be done online. It is more expensive than a normal passport, is usually good for one round trip only and will normally be issued by the British Consulate in Malaga. For those without computers, it is still possible to apply through the post and there are even different shops with English-speaking staff scattered around Spain where for a fee they will help you complete the forms and send them off for you.

Dogs on the loose A PACK of dogs is reportedly running around Almuñecar, chewing on cars during the night, and intimidating locals and their pets. A video has emerged of the seven feral canines apparently gnawing on a car trying to get to a cat inside the vehicle’s engine. Residents are now calling on the town hall to do something ur-
gently, though the Local Police has pointed out that Almuñecar does not have a dog pound to deal with the capture of the pack. While there are fears for public safety, there are also concerns for the animals’ welfare as they appear to be malnourished, which locals believe is what motivates them to venture into residential areas looking for food.
Eco hearing CURRENT and former council officials in Nerja under investigation for alleged crimes against the environment began giving statements in the Court of Instruction on Tuesday. An inquiry was launched by the Nature Protection Service (Seprona) following a complaint by Ecologists in Action which claims to have detected irregularities in some Andalucian treatment plants in 2013, 2015 and 2017.

Bring on the carnival CARNIVAL fever will reach colourful heights in Nerja from this evening, Thursday, February 20, as the four-day festivities kick off at the Villa de Nerja Cultural Centre. The annual celebrations include two processions and a number of contests over the four days building up to the final event of the quirky ‘Entierro del Bogueron’ or Burial of the Anchovy. In Nerja a large decorated (fake) anchovy is paraded through the streets with all manner of pageantry until it reaches one of the town’s central beaches, La Calahonda, where it’s blown up as part of a fireworks display. The opening events will take place in the Villa de Nerja Cultural Centre this evening, with a speech and normally shows performed by local groups and performers. Tomorrow, Friday, the competitions for best fancy dress in the various categories for both adults and children will be held in Plaza de España from 6pm, continuing into the evening. The third day brings the principal

This amount pales into insignificance however as the Institute for Government estimated as long ago as 2017 that the likely cost of leaving would be £2 (€2.4) billion.
Chancellor in a separate interview said that whilst a staunch Remainer, he now realised that it was a mistake and that the party should have understood the mood of the country. At the time, he was convinced that the indication of a referendum would convince Labour supporters to vote as they would normally do but in the end, it became clear that Boris Johnson won so convincingly because the tide of opinion agreed that Brexit should just be pushed through. Now various Labour party ‘names’ are revealing that they warned against being seen to support a second referendum and that Labour should have looked to appease their high percentage of leave supporting voters. As members appear to be blaming each other for the reason that they were so soundly trounced, it seems that the continued support that Sir Keir Starmer is giving to the policy could backfire on him as he endeavours to take over from Jeremy Corbyn.

THERE could be lawsuits worth mil lions of euros flying around Barcelona following the very late cancellation of one of the world’s largest mobile phone exhibitions apparently due to the Coronavirus. Two weeks ago it was reported that one of the largest stand holders at the World Mobile Congress, Sam sung of South Korea, had pulled out of the show in order to ensure that their staff were not exposed to po tential danger leaving a huge hole. AENA, the company which man ages airport facilities around the world and whose biggest share holder is the Spanish government has contracts to take over control at six Brazilian airports. The contract is believed to be worth €404 million to the compa ny and it has vowed to ensure that each site will be as energy efficient as possible with the in troduction of renewable sources, especially solar power. For example, if there are 100 flats all the same size, each owner will have a par ticipation share of 1 per cent. This percentage determines your community fee. Problems can arise when one owner has a very large property and so he has a large participation share. His vote counts for more. In communities with flats of various sizes and thus various quotas, the picture gets more complicated. I hope this clears up the issue.

Sustainable fresh fish WITH more than 340 fresh fish counters in its stores, Spanish supermarket chain, Eroski, has to purchase large amounts of all types of fish on an annual basis. Wherever possible it obtains sus tainable products and has just an nounced that in 2019 it purchased 3,144 tons of fish which was certi fied by one or other of the recog nised authorities. According to the supermarket, more than 1,800 tons were certi fied as coming from sustainable grounds by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and a further 800 tons were approved by GLOBALG.AP with their GGN seal. And there of course lies the true problem. The more obscure and complicated any point of law can actually be, the more the money grabbing lawyers can exploit them - which of course make them the last people on earth who would want them clarified. In fact, complexity and confusion in matters of law, is like money in the bank for this unscrupulous bunch of legal parasites. This latest fiasco once again brought the whole disgraceful debacle on to the front pages. Last week 42 Jamaican nationals were due to be deported after being convicted of offences ranging from manslaughter and firearms to rape and drugs. Lawyers (who else) stepped in and said that a large number of them shouldn’t be deported because their ‘uman rites’ had been denied.

HUMAN RIGHTS: To be honest, I don’t even know what the term actually means. How? Wait for it. They hadn’t been able to get a signal on their mobile phones to ring their - yes you’ve guessed it - lawyers! The legal Mafia, no doubt riding high on tax payers’ money; subsequently presented their case and the judge agreed. Because of the mobile phone fiasco, 25 of these toe rags couldn’t be kicked out. No doubt these numbskulls couldn’t get their heads around a landline!
The thing that once more emerges from the actions of these legalised con merchants is they yet again find themselves in a win win situation. The lawyers of course never lose. Well it’s about time they were curbed. From their persecution of our brave servicemen, to getting murderers and rapists released back on the streets, these people are not interested in justice, all they are interested in are their
own self-centered ends - and the human rights laws are a licence for them to print (tax payers’) money. Well I think that these ‘rights’ should be resolved during the trial. Judges, in the sentencing of those who have totally ignored the human rights of their victims, should have the power to decree human rights ‘denied’ or ‘minimal’ human rights. Lawyers receiving legal aid remuneration from the public purse
should have their fees capped at a reasonable level. Weed out the ambulance chasers and those without any moral conscience whatsoever and their illgotten gains could be put toward the branches of law and order that put the law abiding public first. Not as a means for lawyers to buy another villa in the south of France. It’s all about money isn’t it? The Saudis have the means, the space and the money, to lay a temporary airfield right next to those poor suffering Kurdish civilian refugees. They could easily build a vast tented camp in their country and fly every one of their innocent fellow Sunnis out in a month. But they won’t will they? This spoiled bunch of utter wasters would rather bribe and blackmail the West to totally leave them out of the whole refugee crisis altogether. Money over morals. Never ends does it. IN a recent speech, NHS boss Sir Simon Stevens hit out at ‘quacks, charlatans and cranks’ who spread fake news about health on social media including Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle brand Goop for selling products with no proven health benefits. It has always surprised me that actors or actresses who have become celebrities for basically reading and performing the lines and instructions of screenplay writers and directors are given such a seal of approval for their opinions on topics completely unrelated to their sphere of activity. Generally speaking, you’d need to justify your views on any subject by demonstrating your qualifications, experience or abilities applicable to the subject matter. They seem to have been given a platform to speak from that goes

way beyond their qualifications, knowledge or expertise. As for products such as Goop’s, they’re based on a motley combination of three eternal myths: they promise ‘The Fountain of Youth’; they’re ‘The Panacea for Everything’ or they contain ‘Mystery Ingredient X.’ Often backed up by scientific-sounding words (‘Lab’ in this case), or anecdotal plugs. But why is this ‘quackery’ (in Sir Simon’s own words) even allowed to boom in the modern era? People are so gullible, easily taken in by superstars who are the only winners making millions out of such unproven nonsense. Naturally, fake news thrives while evidence is tossed aside as irrelevant. What would happen if NHS
doctors rejected evidence-based medicine and turned to such unsubstantiated practices? They’d be rightly struck off, certainly not filling their coffers with their spoils. Trump and Paltrow are effectively doing the same thing. They’re offering hope and fulfilment to the ill-informed and those in despair through simple solutions that are patently not evidence based. However, on a positive note, I’m sorry that Sir Simon failed to acknowledge the health benefits that this silly woman has brought by adding to the joy of the nation at her antics. “Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I’m not sure about the former.” Albert Einstein. Pleasant CODE OF THE ROAD journey
EURO WEEKLY, I recently read that young people in Malaga are classed as the worst drivers and wondered how Spain fairs as a whole? As a pedestrian and cyclist I just can’t get over the lack of rules of the road out here. Do people literally just not care or are the police too busy catching Eastern European drugs gangs they just don’t have the time to enforce traffic laws. I have been in a car that was stopped once, because the car had French plates, my friend was fined for a silly made up charge. However, most evenings I will see absolute idiots ripping through the towns at ridiculous speeds and I live close to two police stations but have never seen any Spanish people stopped. Is it the driver’s fault or years worth of lazy police work? Oh and don’t even get me started on parking!! Why would anybody invest in a new car here only to have it bounced back and forward whilst a local makes himself a space?

I live part of the year in Spain where we have a townhouse in Fuengirola. If only our country treated foreigners the same as the Spanish, we are given nothing and are expected to conform to Spanish law. I wonder, in your column, if you could ask if there is one English family living in Spain in a council house and claiming benefits? I would be interested to know. Keep up the good work. PS. An approved Mental Health Practitioner should have been appointed to assess the girl’s mental health and her capacity. If she’s already on (prescribed) medication, her own GP should have referred her to a WellBeing Clinic at least. Her parents should also have tak en responsibility as well. I know the girl is over 18, but even so they should have recog nised she needed help. It’s no excuse for what she has done, but surely we are trying to create a caring society… Someone should step in about the girl’s mental health and get to the root cause of her behaviour? SO, it seems Meghan and Harry are on a full throttle cull at the moment. First her family, then the royal family and now their faithful staff. Have they never heard the saying that you should not bite the hand that feeds you? Historically people would claim to be loyal subjects to the royal family but it seems that loyalty is very far from the young couple’s minds. Should you push away every part of your life to concentrate on a new life with a loved one? Should it all go wrong and they have a change of heart will they have well and truly burnt all the bridges behind them? With the recent news of the staff being axed will this bloodbath drive a wedge between the two and any respect people may have for them. Sources have pointed out that the couple have decided to hire a team of US-based agents and publicists, many of whom worked for Meghan when she was an actress. The couple have been organising private engagements and briefings with the US team and hired a Canadian designer to create a new website without any involvement from the royal advisers. Maybe we should wish them well and send them on their merry way and hope that neither come home with their tail between their legs.

IT’S A SMALL WORLD DAVID WORBOYS ... if we talk to strangers ... IN 1974, working for Helena Rubinstein, I was on a business trip to Australia. T h e p ro j e c t m a i n l y i n volved the Operations Director who introduced me to the team, including the Financial Controller, Bob Humphreys. Within a few weeks I had forgotten all their names. Ten years later I was employed by an electronic engineering company as International Financial Controller. Once again I landed in Australia. It was arranged that I was to check into the hotel, freshen up and meet the Finance Director in the bar at seven.
SMALL WORLD: There are some amazing coincidences. As soon as I walked into the bar, I recognised him. Bob Humphreys. Of all the Finance Directors in Australia, he was the one I had met briefly 10 years previously. And we were now both with a completely different
type of company. On a business trip with Avis Rent-a-Car in 1979 I started talking to the taxi driver as he drove me into Bangkok from the airport. I told him that I work for Avis and he said he used to work for Avis in the airport. For
some reason he asked if I knew Andrew Cook who had come over recently from Singapore to do an audit at the airport. Andrew and I were and still are close friends. We had started with Avis together in the UK. How many taxi drivers are there based in Bangkok Airport? And how many had worked for Avis? In 1992 on another trip to Australia, I broke the journey for a weekend in Hong Kong, staying at the Sheraton. Once in the Sydney office I developed a toothache and Bob Humphreys drove me to a dental surgery. The dentist said he was just back from holiday in Hong Kong. For some reason I asked which hotel he had stayed in. He had been at the Sheraton. He had been on the same floor at the same time as I had. Sydney and Hong Kong are nine hours flight apart. And how many hotels are
there in Hong Kong? None of these coincidences can compare with the one from 1968. I was drinking a beer at a roadside bar in Wiesbaden when there was a crash in the street. I joined several passers-by to ensure that nobody was injured. Unlike the respective cars, the drivers were unharmed and they were both English. Incredibly, they remembered each other from the same school in Buckinghamshire. I joined in as the details of the accident were discussed and then invited them to park their cars and join me for a coffee. As we chatted about the accident, it turned out that one of them, Adam, had pulled off the motorway for a break driving from Basel to Bremen (where he lived) and Bill was driving from Bremen back home near Basel. They had had no contact since leaving school in 1953.

BARRY DUKE FOR three days I agonised over whether to make a call that would end a life of a cherished companion. But on February 7, I finally seized the phone and called our vet to ask her to euthanise Bijou, a Patterdale terrier that we acquired along with his lifelong companion - a mini-Pinscher called Fifi - from a rescue home about nine years ago. We reckoned that Bijou was about seven when we made the decision to adopt, so it was hardly surprising that he started showing signs of old age towards the end of last year. His main problem was arthritis. When he began howling in pain, I called mobile vet Natalia Diaz Tejon and she prescribed medication that helped alleviate the symptoms. But at the beginning of the year, he became unsteady on his legs and very disorientated. When he lost control of his blad-

real sorrow that I expressed on Facebook when I reported on Bijou’s death was that it was utterly shameful that we can let out pets die with dignity, but are denied the same right to help hu-
man lives that are no longer worth living. Two years later I was elated to read that Spain is well on track to legalising euthanasia and assisted suicide. A law may be passed by the coalition government as soon as June. There’s been a lot of whinging, as one would expect, from the Catholic Church, but mercifully Spain no longer tolerates religious interference in its political and social affairs. Moreover, a survey in 2017 showed 84 percent of Spaniards support euthanasia. On a personal note, while I was still in the UK, I vigorously campaigned for voluntary euthanasia as well as for the decriminalisation of drugs. But despite the fact that more than 90 per cent of the UK’s population believe assisted dying should be legalised for those suffering from terminal illnesses, mainly religious opposition has seen seen every effort to in-
troduce euthanasia rejected out of hand by successive governments. One of the most vociferous opponents of euthanasia is devout Catholic Lord Alton of Liverpool, who in 2014, uttered this claptrap when he addressed the Oxford Union: ‘Euthanasia diminishes the dignity and humanity of the sick and elderly and diminishes those of us who condone it.’ No, you imbecile, it does not. When I posted his words on my Freethinker website, a woman commented: ‘Only someone who has never seen someone die of a terminal disease could say something so breathtakingly cruel. It does not surprise me that someone with that attitude would be a forced-birther.’ The ‘forced birther’ remark was prompted by the fact that David Alton is also a fanatical anti-abortionist, and wants Gibraltar to retain its current law that can see a woman jailed for life for terminating a pregnancy. Compassion, bodily autonomy and dignity are concepts completely alien to religious fanatics like Alton, and it’s high time they were hounded out of all positions of influence.

HISPANO Suiza, the Spanish performance-inspired luxury brand, will return to the Geneva International Motor Show in March with the Carmen Boulogne, a version of its fully-electric Carmen hyperlux grand tourer that pays homage to the brand’s competition heritage. A product of the brand’s ‘Tailormade’ department, the Boulogne features design enhancements that reference Hispano Suiza’s racing vehicles from the 1920s, while retaining the Carmen’s exhilarating performance and exceptional luxury. The Boulogne moniker dates back to 1921 and the George Boillot Cup, in which Hispano Suiza competed with five enhanced versions of the company’s H6 Coupé. The endurance race saw competitors battle for victory for more than 3.5 hours, on the roads around the French town of Boulogne. Hispano Suiza achieved three consecutive race wins, with drivers André Dubonnet (1921), Paul Bablot (1922) and Léonce Garnier (1923) driving specially modified versions of the Hispano Suiza H6. Development and build of the infinitely-customisable Boulogne version of the Carmen will be led by
the company’s production partner, QEV Technologies. Also based in Barcelona, QEV boasts a team of highly-skilled engineers with experience across design, engineering, R&D and production for Formula-E teams, supercar brands and mainstream car manufacturers. Hispano Suiza is a historic car brand owned by the fourth generation of the Suqué Mateu family. Between 1904 and 1946, Hispano Suiza built more than 12,000 luxury performance cars and 50,000 aeroplane engines. Today, with its headquarters, technical centre, and manufacturing facility in Barcelona - Hispano Suiza embodies a proud Spanish spirit with a strong family legacy. Spurs went behind in sloppy fashion after nine minutes when Alderweireld turned in Anwar El Ghazi’s deflected right-wing cross having failed to communicate with his goalkeeper, Hugo Lloris. Jack Grealish tormented Spurs down the left channel and had a couple of testers before teeing up Douglas Luiz who, despite a great block from Ben Davies, ought to have scored. It proved costly when Alderweireld lashed home on the spin from a tight angle after Villa had failed to clear a Spurs corner, though Dele Alli then missed two great chances to put the visitors ahead. However, Spurs did go in front in added time in the first half when Son registered his 50th Premier League goal, poking in the rebound from his saved penalty which was awarded when VAR judged Engels had felled Steven Bergwijn.
Engels made amends when he climbed above Alderweireld to head home Grealish’s corner seven minutes after the restart, and the excellent Reina kept Villa on level terms with some crucial stops. Son, though, had the final say deep into injury time, the South Korea international racing free before providing a clinical finish to punish Engels’ mistake.
Arsenal Get Back On Track As They Fire In 4 ARSENAL were not wholly convincing for long periods at home to Newcastle United, but four second-half goals clinched all three points. Alexandre Lacazette scored for the first time since December to put the gloss on a much-needed 4-0 win for Arsenal and head coach Mikel Arteta against Newcastle United on Sunday. Arsenal came into the clash at Emirates Stadium level on points with visitors Newcastle, having won just six times in the Premier League this season - and only once since Arteta’s December appointment. But after a frustrating opening period, the influential Nicolas Pepe laid on a goal for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the 54th minute, and Pepe himself scored three minutes later to all but settle the contest. Mesut Ozil added another in the 90th minute, before
substitute Lacazette got in on the act in stoppage time. Arteta, who revealed before the match he turned down an approach from Newcastle while still an assistant at Manchester City, could enjoy the closing stages of a precious victory, with Arsenal climbing back up to 10th and within sight of the European places. Newcastle’s set-pieces had caused early problems for Arsenal, and Sean Longstaff’s deflected strike forced a scrambling save from Bernd Leno, before Joelinton awkwardly stabbed wide from six yards moments later. Martin Dubravka was not troubled for over half an hour, but Arsenal pressure built heading into half-time as the Newcastle goalkeeper made stops from Aubameyang, Eddie Nketiah and Pepe. The hosts were on the front foot again following the restart, and Pepe
danced to the byline before cutting a cross back for Nketiah, who volleyed against the crossbar. The opener soon followed, with Aubameyang towering over Valentino Lazaro to head Pepe’s rightwing delivery across Dubravka into the bottomright corner. The second came less than three minutes later, as Bukayo Saka nutmegged Lazaro on the left and squared for Pepe to sweep low inside the near post. Ciaran Clark skewed wide from a great position in the area when teed up by Allan Saint-Maximin, who himself hit the post with a fine curling effort, but there was no dramatic Newcastle recovery. Ozil's close-range finish deceived Dubravka for a scruffy third Arsenal goal, before Lacazette's own slightly untidy effort found the topright corner to spark a joyous celebration.

Man Utd Triumph Over Chelsea ANTHONY MARTIAL and Harry Maguire scored either side of half-time as Manchester United claimed a 2-0 triumph over Chelsea on Monday. Manchester United closed ground on the Champions League places as Anthony Martial and Harry Maguire struck to claim a vital 2-0 win over Chelsea, who were twice denied by VAR. Despite heading into Monday’s meeting at Stamford Bridge having taken just four points in 2020, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side moved to within a win of their opponents as they completed a
Premier League double over Chelsea for the first time. Martial continued his excellent form against Chelsea to get United off the mark, with the Blues denied an equaliser through Kurt Zouma by the video review system. United made their luck count in the 66th minute with captain Maguire - who was perhaps fortunate to be on the pitch after an earlier clash with Michy Batshuayi - heading in Bruno Fernandes’ corner and United held firm to secure valuable points after Olivier Giroud also saw a goal disallowed. Chelsea were inches away from taking a sixthminute lead when Reece James lashed wide, but Frank Lampard’s side were dealt a blow when N’Golo Kante was forced off through injury in the 12th minute. Maguire was lucky to go unpunished for kicking out
at Batshuayi, who subsequently squandered a brilliant chance after terrific work from Mason Mount. Yet for all Chelsea’s threat, it was United who had the lead when Martial headed in Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s excellent cross. Chelsea thought they had equalised when Kurt Zouma tucked home from a corner, only for VAR to disallow the goal for Cesar Azpilicueta’s push on Brandon Williams. And, after Fernandes had struck the woodwork with a superb free-kick, Chelsea’s frustrations were compounded as Maguire headed beyond Willy Caballero. Giroud’s header seemed to have set up a grandstand finish, but VAR again came to United’s rescue. CLUB NERJA RUGBY NERJA rugby started 2020 on January 19 with a long trip to Algeciras where they suffered their second consecutive defeat by 33 points to 52. This score line flattered the home side Bahia 89 as a few of their eight tries could be put down to defensive errors on the part of Nerja. The visitors did show potential and were able to run in five tries of their own. The rest of the month was frustrating for Nerja, when two games were postponed denying the club a home fixture and more importantly match practice. So there was a gap of four weeks before their next game, an even longer journey to Cadiz last Sunday. Nerja defended well in the opening exchanges and it was 20 minutes into the game before the first
score. However two tries in quick succession had them 0-12 points down after 30 minutes. Another try in the closing minutes of the half saw Nerja 0-19 down at the interval. The second half was a closer contest with honours even until the home side extended their lead with another converted try midway through the half. Marcos Centurian added a try for Nerja with 10 minutes remaining. Nerja battled on but were unable to further dent the opposition lead going down 5-26 at the final whistle. This result leaves Nerja in fourth place in the league and a difficult task ahead. Their next league game is at home on Sunday February 23 against CR Victoriano at 12 noon at Estadio Enrique López Cuenca.
WALKING FOOTBALL LEAGUE SEEK RECOGNITION THE four clubs in the the Blue Sky Marbella Walking Football League founded in November of last year,and the first walking football league in southern Spain, have agreed to contact the Health Minister and Sports Minister at the Junta de Andalucia to bring to their attention the health and social benefits of Walking Football and to have it accepted as a sport. An application by Walking Football Spain two years ago to become affiliated to the Andaluz Football Federation was rejected on the grounds that the AFF do not recognise Walking Football as ‘normal’ football nor a sport. Various documents from official bodies in the UK are being requested to back up the League’s case. Advice is also being sought from ex professional footballers and others involved in playing and organising of sport in the UK and other European countries. Recognition by the Junta is important in assisting the League and its clubs in improved communication with local authorities as well as affiliation to the AFF which would bring other benefits including funding through grants. This is likely to be a long process but the League are determined to gain
recognition to an activity which is attracting new members at an average of 10 members a month. The next League fixture sees a top of the table clash between the two unbeaten teams, current leaders WFS ‘A’ and deposed leaders undefeated Aston Viñuela. This is sure to be an intriguing match which takes place at the Campo Viñuela next Sunday, February 23, kick off 2pm. Can the ‘New Boys on the Block’ see off the challenge of the WFS ‘A’ fast flowing game? Watch this space!!!! This will be followed by Viñuela’s Reserve team playing a Challenge match against a WFS Over 65’s team. The following Wednesday (February 26) sees WFS ‘B’ come face to face with the Walking Dead again. Probable venue will be Benahavis. (Time to be announced).
