Plea to locate missing man A EURO WEEKLY NEWS reader has asked for the public’s help in locating a man who has not been seen since he walked out of the Torrecardenas hospital in Almeria City without being discharged last Saturday, February 8. The UK Consulate in Malaga informed Sarah Lamble that Gareth Richard Brayley was in a minor car accident on February 5 on the way between Almeria airport and Mojacar, and was taken to the Torrecardenas because he seemed disoriented. Gareth appears to have the onset of dementia and so is vulnerable, Sarah told EWN. The UK Consulate is involved in the case, as is the Guardia Civil. Gareth was born in Twickenham in 1946. He is described as just over six foot, with blue eyes. Sarah has not spoken to him since January 28 and there has been no response to numerous phone calls. Property regularisation obstruction complaint THE AUAN homeowners’ association has accused some Almeria councils of dragging their feet on property regularisation. AUAN President Maura Hillen made the comments following meetings with the Junta de Andalucia last week. Hillen and AUAN lawyer and spokesperson Gerardo Vazquez joined other groups from across Andalucia campaigning for a solution to the some 300,000 irregular houses in the region for twohour talks with regional Development and Territorial Planning minister Marifran Carazo and the Director General of Planning, Maria del Carmen Campagni. The following day the pair met with the Junta’s Development and Territorial Planning Almeria delegate Eloisa Cabrera to focus on the problems with certain municipalities in the province. They said they were pleased at the level of support from the minister and the delegate and the willingness they expressed on resolving the issue. “We are rowing in the same direction,” Vazquez commented. The AUAN president said both Carazo and Cabrera had reiterated that the Regularisation Decree is totally in force and applicable, despite the possibility the central government could chal-
lenge the regulations in the Constitutional Court; something Hillen maintained “would be disastrous for everybody.” AUAN is not however happy with what the association president described as “the negativity, if not downright obstruction, shown by some local authorities when it comes to applying the law to grant AFOs, that is to say a municipal permission that allows irregular houses to access basic services and obtain paperwork for humanitarian reasons, and which allows measures to protect the environment to be applied to a house. “Those affected are very annoyed and frustrated,” she said, “I wouldn’t like to think they are doing this on purpose, or for reasons they cannot admit to, or that they really do wish to stand on the hose of regularisation.” Referring to the Almanzora Valley, where AUAN originated, Hillen claimed Arboleas Council “has rather unusually and rather surprisingly asked for an opinion from the Consejo Consultivo Andaluz advisory body regarding AFO applications, thus suspending and delaying the processing of such applications.” It appears Zurgena has now started to process AFOs she said, calling it “good news.” But Hillen was less positive about Albanchez, a municipality

She also maintained that “certain voices in this municipality have argued that now is not the time to apply for an AFO given that everything is up in the air, something which is not true, as confirmed by the minister and the delegate. “We do not want to waste time squabbling with these town halls. We want solutions,” Vazquez stressed. “But our councils must understand that the decree represents a paradigm shift and the old models no longer fit. Times have changed. They have changed in town planning, just as the regional government changed, and our local authorities must change also, towards models with greater respect for the basic rights of citizens. This is the moment to provide solutions, not to create obstacles,” he argued.

THE number of assaults directed at medical staff in Andalucia Health Service hospitals and health centres in Almeria increased 24 per cent last year to 87 from 70 in 2018, according to the SATSE nursing union. There were 33 verbal aggressions in 2019 and 54 verbal.

Baby rescue FIREFIGHTERS rescued a baby from a car in Roquetas de Mar after the mother locked the keys inside. The woman left the child in his seat while she went to collect his brother from school, but forgot to pick up the keys and the doors locked automatically.

COSTA ALMERIA produce and cuisine will be in the spotlight in what will be the third edition of the Feria Almanzora Gourmet in Cuevas del Almanzora. This year’s fair will be held over the final weekend of March, but the local council’s Trade department, the Cuevas Business and Traders’ Association and the Levante Almeriense Friends of Wine Association are already immersed in the preparations for an event which has attracted increasingly
more exhibitors and members of the public. Cuevas Council said the essence of the fair will remain the agro-food sector and gastronomy, but there will also be several interesting new features this time, details of which it will announce in the coming weeks. Thousands of people visited last year’s show staged at the municipal multi-purpose warehouse, where they could try cold meats, sweet dishes, beers, wines, tapas prepared by top provincial chefs
BEAUTY and artisan products of all kinds. There were also junior cooking workshops, cooking demonstrations, and a whole bunch of activities orientated around the province’s products and food producers. The council said it expected this year’s fair to be even more successful than the last, and would once again be offering the “best of our land” and an opportunity for “our artisans and businesspeople to show the great quality of the products they produce and market.”
Burglar tracked down
Off-duty officer steps in
GUARDIA CIVIL have tracked down a suspected burglar targeting properties in Vicar and Roquetas de Mar. Officers caught up with 30-year-old AM hiding out in a rural property in the San Agustin zone of El Ejido. Guardia launched a hunt for the thief following reports of a series of home break-ins within a fairly small area. In each case the thief had got in by climbing up and breaking an unprotected window. There were also similarities in the kinds of belongings stolen, which were mainly phones and electronic apparatus and jewellery. The evidence gathered at the crime scenes allowed for the identification of an individual who did not live in any of the properties and placed him there at the time of the break-ins. The Guardia Civil have charged the 30-year-old with three burglaries.
AN off-duty Guardia Civil officer stepped in to stop a customer attacking a waiter in an El Alquian establishment. When the aggressor began hurling insults at other customers the waiter asked him several times to stop or to leave. The man’s reaction was to headbutt the poor employee, injuring his face. He then carried on hitting and punching the waiter on other parts of his body. Seeing what was going down, the officer moved in to stop the assault. He identified himself as Guardia Civil, only for the aggressor to turn on him. In the end he managed to stop the violence and detain the man, informing him verbally of the reasons for his arrest and of his rights, and requesting his transfer to a Guardia station and the formal filing of charges. The Guardia identified him as 57-year-old FAGA from Almeria City.

SECOND TIME UNLUCKY IT was a case of unlucky s e c o n d t i m e a ro u n d w h e n p o l i c e c a u g h t a t h i e f re d handed robbing the Almeria Municipal Music School just weeks after he broke into the building a first time. Police said the 49-year- old first did over the school mid-January. He forced open the door leading into the reception area with a screwdriver and got his hands on €300 in cash, a microphone and a guitar worth €600. Investigators circulated a description of the suspect and police patrols in the area were stepped up. Then the robber

had another go at the school. A call to the 091 police line reported someone had forced open the reception’s outside shutters. Two patrols which were nearby came across the suspect huddled inside the building. Officers found he was carrying two stolen mobile phones. A subsequent search of his home led to the discovery of the screwdriver used to break into the school the first time and the gloves and clothes he had worn to carry out the initial robbery. The 49-year-old, who has a police record, has been put in the hands of the courts.
Road funding request MOJACAR Council has approved the mayor’s proposal to apply for Andalucia regional government funding for upgrades to the Faz and Nava country lanes. Council members agreed at the last plenary meeting to ask the Junta de Andalucia’s Agriculture, Livestock, Fishing and Sustainable Development regional ministry for a subsidy under the Plan Itinere for rural road improvements. The Junta plan is designed to improve access infrastructure to agricultural holdings in order to improve potential productivity and competitiveness. In the technical and financial report Mojacar local authority has prepared for the Junta the cost of the Camino de la Nava project is €262,000 and €120,000 for the Camino del Faz. In both cases, the quotes include measures like resurfacing, and works on drains, ditches, walls and road markers. As it stands, the surface of the 1.3-kilometre long Camino del Faz is in a pretty deteriorated state with numerous potholes. It also tends to flood in heavy rains due to a lack of drainage. Depending on the agricultural cycle, it is during some periods of the year used by heavy vehicles. The nearly two-kilometre long Camino de la Nava is also in a poor state of repair.
Lost walker rescued A 64-YEAR-OLD woman who got lost in the Gador mountains on Saturday is safe after she was located and evacuated by helicopter. Guardia Civil working with Local Police and the Rural Guard were mobilised after a call to the 062 emergency number reported the Dalias resident had gone out walking in the afternoon, but had failed to return home. She was last seen in the Cerro de la Garita zone, but her exact location was unknown. The rescue team combed the area and at about nine on Sunday morning they heard her cries for help coming from the difficult to access Pastran hill. A Guardia Civil air service helicopter supported by the GREIM mountain special rescue group based in Granada went to her assistance, taking her for an immediate medical check-up. It turned out she had got caught out by the sun going down while still on the mountain. She lost her bearings in the murky conditions and decided to stay where she was rather than risk suffering an injury trying to get down the mountain.

Drugs and alcohol
PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE: Youngsters tried out glasses which simulated the effects of consuming drugs and booze. SCHOOLCHILDREN in Vera have been learning about the risks from drug and alcohol consumption. Youngsters from the El Palmeral Institute took part in a Drug Dependency Regional Centre workshop to make adolescents aware of what can happen if they consume drugs or booze. The workshop was run by the drug dependency centre doctor Isabel Alaminos. She explained activities included the youngsters trying out glasses which simulate the effects of alcohol, cannabis, cocaine and amphetamines, like reduced peripher-
al or double vision, increased reaction times and lack of coordination. A further session entitled ‘Alcohol, myths and realities’ focused on issues like the glamourisation of drinking and attitudes it equates with characteristics like success, social prestige, maturity and control. The workshop was part of the third edition of the fortnight-long Vera Science and Health Days initiative for 800 pupils in the municipal schools. Among the other topics being covered are sex education, first-aid, miracle diets and emotional well-being.

HUERCAL-OVERA Council is promising a colourful party atmosphere for this year’s carnival celebrations. It will be the turn of the municipality’s youngsters to put on a show on Friday February 21. Children from local schools will strut their stuff in a street procession starting at 4.30pm in Avenida Guillermo Reyna at the Plaza de La Paz and winding its way through the town’s streets until they end up at the municipal marquee in the Plaza de Mayor. There will also be the Grand Junior Carnival Fiesta with entertainment and fun activities and a performance by Grupo Gelatina. The following day the grownups will take to the streets in all their finery. The local authority said it expected a high level of participation of troupes from Huercal-Overa and neighbouring localities.

The procession will go from the Plaza Reina Sofia down part of Avenida Doctor Jimenez Diaz, then on to Calle Doctor Severo Ochoa, Avenida Guillermo Reyna, Calles Mercado, Ancha, Granada, Mayor, Posadas, the
Plaza de la Constitucion and finally Avenida Guillermo Reyna, again coming to an end at the Plaza Mayor. The expectation is there will be “an intense night” of carnival partying in the municipal mar-
quee, the council commented, with live music from the band No me Pises que llevo Chanclas. There will be prizes on the night too for the best troupes, the winners getting €550. The top three will also be up for taking part in the municipal 2021 Three King’s procession. Registration for the processions at the Teatro Villa remains open until Febuary 20. Culture councillor Diego Ortega invited residents of HuercalOvera and the surrounding area to go along and watch the processions and join the party, telling people to expect “an unbeatable atmosphere to enjoy with friends and family.” Coming up the following week will be the distinctly unique Overa carnival. The event’s ‘Mascaras de Camisa’ is included in the Andalucia Intangible Heritage Atlas.

Jobless increase THE Almeria unemployment rate went up by 2.72 per cent in January. Figures from the Employment Public Services showed an additional 1,491 people joined the dole queues during the month, putting the provincial jobless total at 56,263. In interannual terms however, the number of people registered at Employment Public Services offices in Almeria as searching for work was down by 1,263, representing a 2.2 per cent decrease. Unemployment among men in Almeria was 655 higher by the end of January than a month earlier, while the number of women out of work rose by 836. By sector, the most notable increase in unemployment in January was in services (1,154). The total amount of under-25 jobseekers in Almeria edged up by 60 to 4,219.

New wheels for Civil Protection ADRA Council is going to acquire a new, advanced vehicle for the municipal Civil Protection service. The new €26,000 set of wheels which will replace the existing vehicle will be fully equipped, putting the total investment at more than £50,000. It will, Adra mayor Manuel
Cortes said, allow for improved Civil Protection response times and greater ability to assist. Specialist features will include a siren, foldable seat, rescue tripod and a towing hitch ball. Cortes said the acquisition of the new vehicle was “very important” given the Civil Protection service operates every day of the year in response to emergencies. The mayor also commented on his pride in being able to “boast about having one of the best Civil Protection services, not only in Almeria, but in all Andalucia.” The council reported the Junta de Andalucia has meanwhile approved a grant of
nearly €4,000 for Adra’s Civil Protection service to acquire equipment for their changing room. Last year, the local authority supplied the local Civil Protection with new equipment, including individual breathing equipment and fire-resistant materials for their work as first responders in the event of fires. As Adra Civil Protection chief Jose Espinosa commented, “thanks to this it guarantees a better response on being able to deal with a fire with high temperatures more easily, adopting the necessary safety measures for the Civil Protection team members who act on fire prevention.”
POLICE seized nearly 500 items considered of archaeological interest with no documentation to show their legal origin which were dug up by a Roquetas de Mar metal detector enthusiast. Officers from the Environment and Heritage Protection Group of the Police Unit Assigned to the Andalucia Autonomous Community in Almeria were made aware of the possible infringement of the law by the regional government’s territorial delegation with responsibility for heritage and culture. An interview with the individual, along with inspections and an analysis by personnel from the Provincial Archaeological Museum, revealed he had pieces including an Arabian ‘hamsa’ amulet found in Tabernas castle area. Also among his finds were more than 250 Roman and Arab coins, medieval and Roman nails, pieces of metal with inscriptions, a Roman fish hook and a ceramic bowl. The Andalucia Historic Heritage Law only allows controlled use of metal detectors: they can only be used on the region’s beaches with prior authorisation.

THE PAWS-PATAS animal shelter volunteers have one major mission, to find ‘forever homes’ for the many cats and dogs they bring back to health or keep safe after being abandoned. Homing animals overseas plays a crucial part in this mission, and now the animal charity is seeking extra assistance. POLICE have arrested two men suspected of holding up 24-hour convenience stores in Almeria City and getting away with more than €2,000. Police believe the pair are the two robbers who with their faces partially covered entered an establishment in Avenida Cabo de Gata in the provincial capital at around midnight. The thieves grabbed the female shop manager around the neck, one of them threatening her with a large screwdriver and the other with a knife. They got their hands on the cash register and made off with nearly €1,500 in cash. Two days later, and this time in the early hours of the morning, the thieves were in action again. On this occasion they got their hands on €550 from a business in Calle Instincion, but not before the shop employee put up quite a fight. He whacked one of the robbers on the head with a metal tray and

caused injuries to his nose and forehead. These were details which proved crucial to the subsequent identification and detention
of the duo. A patrol recognised the pair from the precise description given out by the investigating team and they were identified and arrested by uniformed officers in the street, one of the suspects still bearing the marks where the employee hit him with a tray. Police named the two detainees as 24-year-old AAM and 37-year-old ACV. They are being held in prison awaiting trial.

People smugglers intercepted POLICE have arrested two Algerian nationals after Maritime Rescue intercepted a rubber dinghy heading for the Almeria shore with 16 immigrants on board, one of them a woman. The pair are accused of skippering the craft and face charges of crimes against the rights of foreign citizens. Police investigations carried out with the support of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (FRONTEX) established that the five-metre long boat has set out from the Aint Turk beach in Algeria in the early hours of the morning. About a month earlier a criminal organisation had started to make contact with people in the North African country to offer them a place on the boat for 100,000 dinars, the equivalent of some €750. They were told to show up without luggage or food and that the crossing to Spain would take about eight hours. The boat skippers also told the immigrants that if the boat were to be intercepted they were all to say they had taken it in turns on the boat’s navigation and orientation systems. According to police however, it was either 25-year-old MEF or 21-year-old MA who had been in charge of managing the motor and bailing out water from the dinghy, while the other one told him in which direction to go, guided by a compass.

Modernisation works included all the municipality’s street lighting, illumination at sports grounds and reforms to the Rural Alto Almanzora school playground. The Diputacion

There was €10,000 for reforms to the hermitage roof under the provincial administration’s Presidency department financial assistance for municipalities with less than 1,000 inhabitants. Passport information appear in the old style and new style passports. In the old style passports there is a section which advises passport holders that if they are in trouble and need consular help in a country where the UK does
not have diplomatic representation (Cape Verde for instance) then they can contact any Embassy or Consulate of any EU State in that country. This information is missing from the new passports but the British Embassy in Madrid confirmed to Euro Weekly News that this access to EU representation will continue until the end of 2020 or withdrawal if earlier.

Dry month fundraiser
COSTA ALMERIA British expat Mark Beckitt stayed off the booze for a whole month, not so much for an alcohol detox but to raise money for an extremely worthy local cause. Mark collected the amazing amount of €900 for the Vera-based Asprodalba association for the intellectually disabled from his sponsored boozefree November.
On top of that, Dave and Anna Ryder added €131 to the Asprodalba fund from a monthly charity quiz they hold every month at Badger’s restaurant in Mojacar Playa. Also going into the Asprodalba pot was a further €134 from a raffle held at Badger’s in December. Last week Mark, wife Mandy and Dave and Anna visited the Asprodal-
ba school to present the donation in person. The school is for children and adults with learning difficulties. Many of the children produce lovely ceramic items, which are sold in an Asprodalba shop in Vera town. Mark, Mandy, Dave, Anna and Jenna from Badgers Restaurant all put out a massive thanks to all the people who had supported their fundraising efforts.
Road safety in pictures A NEW initiative in Huercal-Overa is aimed at assisting people with autism on road safety matters. Pictograms are being painted on pedestrian crossings to facilitate understanding for people on the autism spectrum and to promote the self-sufficiency and safety of this section of society. The pictograms are being put principally on pedestrian crossings giving access to schools, and to sports and municipal facilities. The initiative comes under a collaboration agreement between the council and the TEAVIAL autism and road safety non-profit association and TEAVIAL collaborator ASTEA-Autismo. Huercal-Overa is the first local authority in the province to sign the agreement. Huercal-Overa mayor Francisca Lourdes Fernandez Ortega underlined the value of the work carried out by ASTEA-Autismo in the municipality ‘to improve the quality of the lives of peo-
ple on the autism spectrum and their families.’ Commenting after the signing of the agreement, where she was accompanied by ASTEA-Autismo president Monica Lopez and Social Well-being councillor Maria del Mar Meca, the mayor said the project will “facilitate road safety knowledge” among people with autism. As well as the pictograms there will also be resources like educational guides, which will be available to schools; the association will also be able to hold workshops in the municipal schools related to the guides, which are aimed at facilitating inclusion in the school community. The local authority explained that the pictograms follow three years’ work on the part of TEAVIAL in collaboration with the University of Sevilla, “which reflects that the use of pictograms is very useful for the day-to-day lives of people suffering from cognitive deficit.”
Donating blood in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. Despite their autonomous operations management, every regional service is fully incorporated into a unique and common Public National Health System, supplying a cohesive blood transfusion care to all citizens, residents, and visitors in Spain based on 100 per cent voluntary and non-remunerated blood donation. Anyone who has lived continuously in the UK between 1980 and 1996 (a minimum of one year) will not be able to donate blood in Spain due to the risk of transmitting mad cow disease. Similarly, there are restrictions if you have received a blood transfer in the UK. However, each region may have different rules about donation. Call the donation helpline on 935 573 500. Alternatively, visit www.donorsang.gencat.cat to find out if you are eligible. If you are eligible, you can give blood at your local hospital, or via the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja) at one of their clinics, or in one of their mobile units. You can check dates and locations by visiting www.donarsangre.org. A donor card is not necessary to give blood. On the first visit you will have to provide DNI, NIE, passport or a driving licence. If you are already registered in the Blood Bank, you only need a donor card or a document with your name and surname. The process of blood donation takes just 10 minutes in which 450 ml are collected (equating to 10 per cent of the total blood circulation of an adult person). Despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain blood is through the generosity of the public. The blood is carefully screened for disease to make sure it is safe. After a tattoo, you must wait four months to be eligible to donate. After surgery, the exclusion period will depend on the type of intervention. After minor surgical procedures, you cannot donate blood for seven days or until you are fully recovered. After undergoing major surgery, you will not be able to donate blood for four months. The rarest blood type is AB, present in 1 per cent of Caucasians, according to research by the America Red Cross. USES: Items deposited in the bins are either donated to non-profit organisations or converted into products like building insulation.
Recycling record ADRA recycled more than 24 tonnes of textiles in the special green bins located around the municipality in 2019. “Adra residents continue demonstrating their commitment and involvement in the care of the planet, with gestures as simple and everyday as recycling,� commented Development and Public Works councillor Ignacion Gines.
There are 15 green textile recycling bins dotted around Adra town and outlying districts, including La Caracola, Puente del Rio and La Curva. The bins are for depositing unwanted clothing, shoes, sheets, blankets, towels, quilts and similar items. The company which provides the service free of charge to the municipality collects the items deposit-
ed in the bins and sorts them. Anything in good condition is donated to non-profit organisations and items in poor condition are turned into products like building insulation or stuffing for vehicle seating. Adra Council also reported nearly 500 kilos of alkaline batteries were recycled in the municipality last year.

Haribo are taking action to have the bears banned due to the risk of confusion.

Thrifters and Swishers A RECENT survey by Mintel the world’s leading market intelligence agency has revealed an interesting fact which shows that Britain’s young people are either very poor or anxious to help the environ ment. In today’s easy come, easy go cheap fashion world, 52 per cent of those aged between 25 and 34 said that they regularly purchased sec ondhand clothes and just slightly less said they also sold their clothes which means that they belong to a new group called ‘Thrifters.’ Not only does this group buy and

Younger people (16 to 24year olds) are ‘Swishers’ as some 75 per cent say that they are quite happy to regularly swap clothes with friends in order to have an inexpen sive way of varying their wardrobes. Also known as Generation Z, this age group are also happy to rent clothes for special occasions rather than purchase them with 54 per
cent saying that they have or would be interested in renting. The survey found that the majori ty feel that buying too many fash ion items is bad for the environ ment and they would prefer to purchase from a retailer that sold sustainable fashion ranges, but had difficulty in knowing which sellers are acting ethically. It’s almost a return to the con cept of ‘reusing, reducing and recy cling’ which their grandparents had to follow during the Second World War, so fashion outlets need to take note.
DESPITE being fined €5.4 million by the Bank of Spain for incor rectly calculating the APR of its mortgages, ING has decided to continue with its aggressive ac tivities aimed at increasing mort gage market share in Spain. Whilst the reductions are small in real terms (0.1 to 0.2 per cent), it has to be remembered that the actual mortgage rates them selves are in low single figures. Because it doesn’t pay com mission, unlike other banks, it has not been adversely affected by the new laws removing many costs from the mortgagee.

Can they ban dog walking? We have agreed at previous AGMs to ban dogs from being exercised through our garden paths. Now we have an owner who insists, on a daily basis, on doing just that. The offending LAW IN SPAIN owner has not bro ken any law. He simply ignores the rules set by the community of his neigh bours. I am supposing that he picks up the dog’s droppings and does not otherwise cause nuisance. His behaviour is annoying and shows a lack of respect for the feeling of his neighbours, but the gardens are not public land and the community has no legal power to enforce their agreed rules in this case. In fact, a Community of Property Owners cannot legally charge fines or add a surcharge to the fees of owners who ignore the mutually agreed rules.

One of the largest producers of wind turbines is Siemens Gamesa with its headquarters in Spain and they are tackling two pro jects, firstly to make the blades even larger and secondly to en sure that they are produced from carbon fibre and then try to find an efficient and easily recyclable alternative.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I REALLY do wish people would stop asking me why, as a resident of Spain, I should be writing and giving my opinions on events and situations that arise in the UK? Well, the simple answer to that is, it’s what I do. I am still a very patriotic and staunch supporter of my birth country and, although I don’t actually reside there, I do visit on a fairly regular basis. Because of my profession, I also often find myself travelling there quite extensively. Another more important advantage of being on the outside, looking in as it were, is that you can get a far broader and often more unbiased perspective of a situation - one that can often elude those who live in the confines of the same environment day in and day out. This brings me neatly into this week’s gripe. Yet another atrocity committed by a ‘home grown’ terrorist has brought mayhem to a

peaceful British shopping centre. Yet another prisoner on early release has been allowed to walk freely among innocent citizens and maim and injure before being shot dead. No doubt there was plenty of high fiving and ‘Al-
lah Akbars’ in a number of the British prisons holding a seething cauldron of fanatics who also can’t wait to get out and carve their own bloody path to Shangri la. And what ideas do the authorities come up with to
combat the problem? Well, quite frankly not a lot. Adding 25 per cent to a sentence already cut in half, in the forlorn hope that it will give the luvvies more time to de-radicalise these people, simply doesn’t hack it. In the first place, it merely postpones the release of fanatics who will have become even more disgruntled and secondly; de-radicalisation is simply not an option. This twisted ideology is the very reason for their existence. It is all powerful. They actually want to die for it. Dogma of this nature cannot be somehow conveniently exorcised. Even the peace loving Christians went to the lions rather than surrender their religion. What the authorities need to do is get tough. First of all they must relieve these monsters of all their human rights. The introduction of a mandatory full 10-year sentence for any terrorist related offence, including the accessing or passing of terrorist propa-
ganda or its ideology in any form. Whole life sentences for all violent terrorist actions. Stopping all benefits and, as a deterrent, possible deportations of all the perpetrator’s close family members. (‘He was such a lovely boy’!) The constructions of high security prisons, preferably on some uninhabited island, with solitary confinement, a minimum of association and communication and access to only limited privileges that have to be earned. And most important of all, chipping. The obligatory insertion of a device that can not only track, but record all conversations between inmates. This should also remain for life should they ever be released. Inhumane? Tell that to the families of all the innocent loved ones who have been slaughtered by these scourges on our society. Maybe some among the migrants amongst us aren’t just from other lands, but other planets? After all, according to the 2011 census, the UK alone underwent its biggest population surge after a decade of mass immigration. Some even believe many ‘alien migrants,’ collectively, are known as Members of Parliament since they often sound like they’re on another planet. Well, perhaps that’s because they are. Good grief! OUR VIEW GLOBAL warming has been happening on Earth since Adam was alive but in those days there were no Greta Thunbergs or DiCaprios to tell us about why we should worry about how many times we fly back to our home countries, the fuel we use in our car, the eco-efficiency of our homes. All these things contribute to our global footprint - that is the impact we as individuals, through our lifestyle, have on the planet. But should we be made to feel guilty that living our lives is killing the planet and leading to the extinction of the human race? According to Dr Guy Midgley, head of the climate change research group of the National Biodiversity Institute South Africa, we live on an unusually stable planet, but periods of cooling and warming naturally happen in cycles. These periods of rising and falling temperatures over the last 500,000 years have been down to levels of methane and CO2 in the atmosphere which are not man-made. Also, levels of solar radiation vary over time and this has a significant impact on global temperatures, most notably in the Earth’s northern hemisphere. Climate change experts believe we are currently between ice ages and that the development of modern industry has had a relatively minor impact on temperatures. Over several thousand years in the earth’s history, temperatures have been higher than they currently are indicating that doing too many school runs or turning on the air con isn’t what’s going to wipe us out. So, it’s not just our fault, but does that mean we should throw caution to the wind? Not at all. Reducing greenhouse gases will slow down global warming and, while we’re the planet’s dominant species, we should do all we can to save the planet. After all, we’re only passing through.
PLANE SAILING DEAR Euro Weekly, With the majority of your readers taking flights backwards and forwards between their home country and Spain it has freaked me out a bit with all the recent news regarding aircraft. Helicopter crashes, malfunctioning landing gear, diverted flights, planes that can’t handle the weather... is it now just a case of say your prayers and hope for the best if we want an easy way to travel? Surely there are enough people working in the aeronautics industry now we can fly more safely. Plane engineers making sure they are suitable to fly. Designers discovering ways to build making fail-safe planes. Weren’t we all supposed to have our own rockets or jet boots by this point? All joking aside, getting on a Ryanair flight is bad enough as it is, before worrying if the flight is going to crash. Maybe they could upgrade their cabins to give some comfort should you be on the last flight you ever take or will they just go the whole hog and replace your one bag allowance with space for a parachute?

Work woes HI Leapy, About right, I have worked in many countries in Europe, Asia and Africa, but have only been discriminated against in Europe. I still have a letter from a major car manufacturer saying that I cannot be considered until their own citizens have all been employed. Basically their labour exchanges etc say the same thing. I have been a manager in the telecoms industry and when I have been told to cut my workforce, there inevitably have been Asian and African engineers among those that had to be cut. For me, the worst part of the job was firing people. The Asians and Africans were almost always among the least productive. LAVENDER oil is extracted from the flowers of the lavender plant, usually using steam, and is often used in beauty and health products such as aromatherapy oil, lotions and soaps. QUINOA hit the foodie headlines several years ago as being the super grain you should add to your diet. It’s possible to find quinoa products in most health stores but its recent popularity means many supermarkets now stock them too. It is believed humans first started consuming the thousands of years ago when the Incas discovered the quinoa seed was suitable for consumption. This super food is packed with lots of good stuff that make it good for you. Quinoa is packed with protein, which is essential for repairing muscle tissue and keeping the body in ship shape. It also contains around twice as much fibre as other grains, which is essential in aiding digestion and could also help to prevent heart disease as it keeps blood pressure at healthy levels and prevents the risk of developing diabetes. The super grain also has a good level of iron which is needed to keep our red blood cells healthy. It increases brain function because the brain absorbs around 20 per cent of the oxygen from our blood. It is rich in magnesium and manganese, essential nutrients needed to relax blood vessels, preventing migraines, promote healthy blood sugar control and protect cells from free radicals.

How to cope with post-workout soreness IT’S normal to feel a bit sore after an intense workout, but what should you do when the pain is worse than usual and is interfering with your daily life? The scientific term for post-workout aches and pains is DOMS - ‘delayed-onset muscle soreness.’ It usually peaks around two to three days following exercise as your body starts to go to town on repairing any muscle fibres that may have been torn during the workout. Occasionally, you may experience ‘extreme soreness,’ which is more likely to happen after you’ve done an intense activity that your muscles aren’t accustomed to. Just because you’re more sore, it doesn’t always mean you’re getting better workout results and can cause you more damage in the long ter m so don’t make a habit of exercising regularly on a high level of soreness.
However, there are several simple things you can do to ease the pain. First of all, make sure you stay hydrated as research has shown a correlation between dehydration and DOMS. Water helps to purge waste products and toxins that are associated with muscle soreness. Also make sure you eat lots of protein which is vital for rebuilding muscle tissue. You could also try switching between heat and cold therapy as ice helps to reduce the swelling that is sometimes the result of extreme soreness while heat can minimise pain and tension.

THE ‘Star Wars from Almeria’ exhibition at the provincial capital’s Museo Arqueologico has been extended until the beginning of March. The exhibition dedicated to the Star Wars world features more than 100 pieces owned by three Almeria residents, including figures, vehicles and replicas, mainly from the first three movies: A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Most of the space ships in the collection are handmade by well-known model makers based in Barcelona and the US, and took between three months and a year to construct. Adding to the collection are three highly detailed diaromas depicting three famous scenes from the films: the entrance of Darth Vader on the Tantive spaceship in search of stolen plans of the Death Star, Yoda’s cabin in Dagobah and the interior of the Jabba palace. The organisers are also running a programme of guided tours, which must be booked in advance.

An Italian Touch utes… Soften a whole large fennel cut into strips in some olive oil for five minutes. Do not let it colour, just soften. Add two crushed garlic cloves. Then add some chard leaves that have been chopped into thin strips (you could use spinach). Let it wilt then add salt and pepper. Beat four eggs in a bowl and grate in a good handful of parmesan. Mix well. When the spaghetti is ready, add to the pan with a tablespoon of the pasta cooking water. Mix together and leave for 30 seconds. Then mix in the egg and cheese mixture. Feel free to add some more parmesan and black pepper. If you want to spice it up a little, a few chilli flakes will work.
SOME years ago I was working with a company whose offices were round the corner from the famous Italian restaurant Locanda Locatelli, owned by the charismatic Giorgio Locatelli. I was taken for lunch there quite a few times and Giorgio would often come out of the kitchen and have a chat with us. It was Giorgio who would do wonderful things with seasonal vegetables (and truffles if you had the funds!). He told me that a carbonara should never have cream, only beaten eggs. This is a delicate and creamy dish that shows off the wonderful flavour of fennel. Put a 500g pack of spaghetti into boiling salted water (enough for four people). You now have 10 min-

Have I missed something? MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I USE a couple of online forums to ask about things that I’m not sure of. I’m careful what I put on there. I try to be concise and to the point and, of course, look forward to any answers that may be given or comments on the posts. But what really gets on my nerves is the people that hijack the conversation by taking over my thread and sending it in a completely different direction. It happens all the time. There has to be forum etiquette and it’s simple. If I ask about the correct air pressure to put in my tyres for a long journey to Portugal with a car full of people I have no desire to read about how your Aunt Fanny got her suitcase nicked at Faro airport OK? The annoying thing is that sometimes by the time I get back to read the answers to my question it’s now gone off in loads of different directions. I will, of course, just try and take it back with the one word reply to that person which is HIJACKER!
OK I may be taking a chance with this next grump but it has to be said. As I’ve mentioned before I was in the video business for over 20 years and in that time I watched thousands of movies as a buyer. Not once did I ever consider the race, religion or sexual persuasion of any actor, director, or come to that anything except was it a good movie. There is a lot of carrying on at the moment with the Baftas, Oscars and whatever other award is being given out, that there should be more women, people of colour and gay, plus any others I’ve missed nominated. My question is could it actually be a case that the movies, directors or stars that are being nominated are actually producing the best work? I’ve listened and read all the stuff people like Joaquin Phoenix has said and I’d hate it to go the other way and movies and the stars and directors were nominated because of all of the above reasons of colour, gender etc. I don’t see Joaquin refusing any awards by the way or saying you know I think I’ll give this to so and so because their performance was far superior to mine. Oh and what’s with Joaquin curtseying when introduced to the Royals? Have I missed another equality thing?

Rougher roads VOLKSWAGEN has unveiled the Taigun, a small SUV designed specifically for the Indian market and due to go into production in 2021, at the New Delhi Auto Expo. The production version of the Taigun will be the first Volkswagen launched under the VW Group’s ‘India 2.0’ project. The new model, similar in size to the European-market T-Cross, is closely related to the Skoda Vision IN concept that has also been unveiled at the event. Both vehicles are built on a new local market version of Volkswagen’s MQB A0 modular platform and will be built alongside each other. The Taigun is marginally longer than the T-Cross, with a wheelbase of 2,651mm. It also offers an increased 205mm of ground clearance, in order to better cope with India’s rougher roads. The exterior design is bespoke to the Taigun, with a more upright design than the T-Cross and greater use of chrome to reflect local tastes.
Inside, the concept features a digital instrument cluster and an 8.0-inch central touchscreen. According to Autocar India, the Taigun will be powered by a 130hp, 1.5litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, with a CNG-powered version also being considered. The Taigun and Vision IN will both gain ‘notchback’ variants - similar to the Brazilian VW Ventos - in the future. While the initial focus for both machines will be India, the VW Group could export them to similar markets including Brazil and South America - in the future.

THE 2021 MercedesBenz AMG GLE 63 S is a sensible five-passenger SUV with added touches from the high-performance division of the German global automobile marque. With just over 600 horsepower on tap, the AMG GLE 63 S may look similar to the standard GLS, but there are many noticeable exterior changes, not to mention what’s under the hood. Mercedes-AMG, as always, has done an excellent job of engineering a family SUV that can, if so desired, handle some hot laps around the track. Like all other MercedesAMG models, the new GLE 63 S features several exterior modifications to set it apart from its non-AMG counterpart. An AMG-specific radiator grille with vertical louvres, front bumper with a dynamic A-wing design, a power dome hood, and a front splitter in silver. Sought after titles CABRERA Lawn Bowling Club held its two most prestigious competitions, the Ladies’ a n d G e n t ’s S i n g l e s Club Championship, simultaneously between January 23 and the February 2. These are very sought after titles as the champions’ names go on the club’s board of honour. In this competition it is the first player to score 21 shots. As always there were some very good rounds. In the end the two

and Penny Craig. Malcolm started off the better in the Gent’s final, and after six ends was 9-1 up. Colin found some form and pulled back slightly, but on the day Malcolm proved to be the stronger bowler and won quite comfortably 21-9. It was a similar story in the Ladies’ final. Penny got off to a flying start, with Sylvia trying her best to get into the game. Penny won 21-11. As she was last year’s beaten finalist and has been on fantastic form for the last 12 months it was well deserved. LBC issues many congratulations to both Malcolm and Penny, and commiserations to Colin and Sylvia. There were thanks also for the umpires, markers and spectators.

Football support CUEVAS DEL ALMANZORA Council is continuing its support for local football team Cuevas CF. The local authority has for another year renewed the collaboration agreement with the side, which plays in the Andalucia Senior first division. Cuevas mayor Antonio Fernandez Liria and Sports councillor Miriam Quintana held a recent meeting with the club directors to get first-hand updates on what’s new for this season. The mayor said the collaboration represented the council’s recognition of the “great work and efforts the club makes in the municipality.” He also underlined the local authority’s support in general for sport in the area.
