ONE year after Julen’s death after falling down a well in Totalan which followed a titanic rescue which kept Spain on tenterhooks, a region in Velez-Malaga exhibits an equally dangerous area with exposed wells, positioned at ground level just waiting for another tragedy to happen. The AA.VV. Las Canteras de Valleniza (the Quarries of Valleniza) have alerted to the danger on their Facebook page with photos of the exposed wells, a hazard to anyone walking in the area. The minimal distraction by anyone not attentive to the ground could result in a life-threatening accident. There are reportedly no hazard signs or barriers to prevent falls and, according to Las Canteras de Valleniza, the town council promised to provide a solution over a year ago, howev-

Fiesta De La Candelaria
THE Paseo de Andalucía in VelezMalaga will be the setting for the celebration of the ‘Fiesta de la Candelaria,’ organised by the Virgen del Rocio Brotherhood and in which the Velez Town Hall collaborates. The event will take place on February 22 from 1pm and will feature numerous musical activities among which is the performance of Maria de la Colina. The councillor for Fairs and Festivals of the Municipality of Velez-Malaga, Lola Gamez and the elder sister of the Virgen del Rocio Brotherhood, Pilar Perez, gave the details of the event, also known as the ‘Festival of Light.’ Apparently the traditional festival of the Candelaria is celebrated every year on February 2 in the village of El Rocío in Almonte and in Velez-Malaga on a different date, so that everyone can attend and enjoy both events.
TRADITIONAL: The Candelaria is celebrated every year. The festival in Velez-Malaga will kick off at 1pm on Saturday February 22 where community members can enjoy drinks and home-made dishes prepared by the Brotherhood at affordable prices, and a plate of paella in exchange for one kilo of food or cleaning products as well as enjoy the numerous musical performances.

Beach work NERJA City Council will renovate the toilet modules on several beaches in the municipality, which will mean an investment of €198,569.41. New Bulletproof Vests THE town council of Velez-Malaga has applied a new improvement in the Local Police with the acquisition of bulletproof vests, meeting the needs and demands of the group, and to help ensure the proper performance of their duties effectively and in conditions of maximum security. The councillor of Security, Jose Maria Dominguez, accompanied by the Chief of Local Police, Jose Andres Montoya, appeared at a press conference to confirm the investment of €49,459 in the acquisition of 75 vests, with their corresponding covers, in addition to 18 new covers for the existing vests, manufactured in a high quality material, comfortable and lightweight with the aim of providing greater protection and safety to the Local Police officers. The acquisition of the vests is added to other improvements that the town of Velez-Malaga has recently invested in, including the renewal of the fleet of vehicles, with the addition of 10 new cars, a new computer system to streamline management services and the acquisition of new personal transmitters reaching a total investment of more than €850,000.

Safety Campaign For The Elderly launched ALMUÑÉCAR is launching a safety campaign aimed at preventing and improving the safety of the town’s senior citizens. The event is to take place today Thursday, February 13, at 11 am, in the Social Services Centre located in the La Paloma district. The event will be led by the Citizen Information Team (EICI) of the Guardia Civil and will offer an infor mative talk on safety for the elderly. Highlighting the main threats detected such as theft, and fraudulent use of their funds, accounts and savings by dishonest third parties. In addition to safety aspects in regards to
theft, the campaign also aims to introduce welfare intervention activities such as establishing a channel of communication and collaboration between health and safety entities and those in direct contact with the senior citizens of the community. The councillor for Social Services and the Elderly of Almuñecar Town Council, María del Car men Reinoso, encourages the elderly to attend the event which is open to ‘all.’

Almuñecar Now Has Its First Dog Park THE first municipal dog park in Almuñecar is now open to the public, located in the northern area of the Gardens of Al Hoceima. The Almuñecar Town Hall, through its Environment Department, has promoted this park, in response to a demand from the local community and a request from the Almuñecar Animal Protection Association (APAMA), who, according to the municipal head of the Environment, Luis Aragón, have collaborated, side by side, on the project. According to the councillor for the Environment, who visited the facility on the
opening day, the new space has rules for its correct use. The councillor stressed the importance of respecting and using the facilities correctly, explaining that there are posters with the recommended standards on display in the area. This enclosure, which covers an area of 420 m², will be for the exclusive use of canine pets, where they can be left loose, but accompanied at all times by their owner who needs to be of legal age. To ensure the safety of all, the entrance doors must remain closed and dangerous dogs must be kept on a leash and muzzled.
THE deputy mayor of Benajarafe and Chilches, J Hipólito Gómez, accompanied by a representative of Benajarafe and members of the Women’s Association of Chilches, presented the carnaval programme on February 15 in Benajarafe and February 16 in Chilches. In Benajarafe, the programme of activities will begin at 1pm with the performance of ‘Tacnoes al aire’ by Dalila Calderon and the exhibition of ‘CD Fit-Axarquia’ by Luismy Varela. Later there will be performances by the chirigota formed by the sixth grade students of the CEIP San Faustino and the Murga del Pacheco, ‘El Príncipe de Vélez.’ Registration for the parade will take place from 1pm to 3pm on the day of the parade in the church courtyard. Canal Sur TV films in Nerja THE cameras of Canal Sur Televisión recorded last week an episode of the programme Salud al día in Nerja. The programme is broadcast on Saturdays and Sundays at 3.35pm, and the recording which took place in Nerja at Burriana beach, the Balcón de Europa and other emblematic spots in the town, is scheduled for broadcast during the month of March. The programme, which can also be seen on Andalucia Television’s satellite broadcast, is one of Canal Sur’s most popular programmes and has been on air for 20 years. The programme, called ‘Salud al día’ (Health Updates) aims to improve viewers’ knowledge of health issues.

After minor surgical procedures, you cannot donate blood for seven days or until you are fully recovered. After undergoing major surgery, you will not be able to donate blood for four months. Wind power challenges ALTHOUGH windmills have existed in some form or other for thousands of years, the concept of wind turbines to generate electricity is relatively new and is about to cause some environmental problems. Whilst far more efficient and green than burning coal in a power station, the wind turbines use blades which have a finite life and the older ones were pro duced in glass fibre which is hard to recycle. An architect firm in Holland, Superuse Studios has produced a number of playgrounds and street furniture and is currently awaiting planning permission to convert two blades into a bridge in Denmark. One of the largest producers of wind turbines is Siemens Gamesa with its headquarters in Spain and they are tackling two pro jects, firstly to make the blades even larger and secondly to en sure that they are produced from carbon fibre and then try to find an efficient and easily recyclable alternative.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I REALLY do wish people would stop asking me why, as a resident of Spain, I should be writing and giving my opinions on events and situations that arise in the UK? Well, the simple answer to that is, it’s what I do. I am still a very patriotic and staunch supporter of my birth country and, although I don’t actually reside there, I do visit on a fairly regular basis. Because of my profession, I also often find myself travelling there quite extensively. Another more important advantage of being on the outside, looking in as it were, is that you can get a far broader and often more unbiased perspective of a situation - one that can often elude those who live in the confines of the same environment day in and day out. This brings me neatly into this week’s gripe. Yet another atrocity committed by a ‘home grown’ terrorist has brought mayhem to a

peaceful British shopping centre. Yet another prisoner on early release has been allowed to walk freely among innocent citizens and maim and injure before being shot dead. No doubt there was plenty of high fiving and ‘Al-
lah Akbars’ in a number of the British prisons holding a seething cauldron of fanatics who also can’t wait to get out and carve their own bloody path to Shangri la. And what ideas do the authorities come up with to
combat the problem? Well, quite frankly not a lot. Adding 25 per cent to a sentence already cut in half, in the forlorn hope that it will give the luvvies more time to de-radicalise these people, simply doesn’t hack it. In the first place, it merely postpones the release of fanatics who will have become even more disgruntled and secondly; de-radicalisation is simply not an option. This twisted ideology is the very reason for their existence. It is all powerful. They actually want to die for it. Dogma of this nature cannot be somehow conveniently exorcised. Even the peace loving Christians went to the lions rather than surrender their religion. What the authorities need to do is get tough. First of all they must relieve these monsters of all their human rights. The introduction of a mandatory full 10-year sentence for any terrorist related offence, including the accessing or passing of terrorist propa-
ganda or its ideology in any form. Whole life sentences for all violent terrorist actions. Stopping all benefits and, as a deterrent, possible deportations of all the perpetrator’s close family members. (‘He was such a lovely boy’!) The constructions of high security prisons, preferably on some uninhabited island, with solitary confinement, a minimum of association and communication and access to only limited privileges that have to be earned. And most important of all, chipping. The obligatory insertion of a device that can not only track, but record all conversations between inmates. This should also remain for life should they ever be released. Inhumane? Tell that to the families of all the innocent loved ones who have been slaughtered by these scourges on our society. THE first British cosmonaut Helen Sharman has said she believes aliens do exist, claiming extra terrestrials ‘could be living amongst us here on Earth,’ but have simply gone undetected thus far. “Aliens exist, there’s no two ways about it,” she stated, adding that: “there must be all sorts of different forms of life” among the billions of stars. Although aliens may not be made up of carbon and nitrogen like humans “it’s possible they’re here right now and we simply can’t see them.” Presumably, though, those who do make it manage to pass through Heathrow when passport control is having one of its relaxed days. The rest will just have to join the queue and wait - Border Control has no ‘guidelines’ concerning those not from a country on earth. In many low-budget, science-fic-
tion classics of the past like ‘The Invaders,’ ‘Invasion Of The Body Snatchers,’ ‘Quatermass 2,’ the alien invaders had the power to assume human form. Maybe some among the migrants amongst us aren’t just from other lands, but other planets? After all, according to the 2011 census, the UK alone underwent its biggest population surge after a decade of mass immigration. Some even believe many ‘alien migrants,’ collectively, are known as Members of Parliament since they often sound like they’re on another planet. Well, perhaps that’s because they are. Good grief! Next we’ll read northern Europe’s bad weather is the fault of aliens. Their UFOs moved the jet stream south. Anyway, let’s hope they’ve brought their wellies and brollies with them if they’re visiting the UK at the moment. Really!

OUR VIEW GLOBAL warming has been happening on Earth since Adam was alive but in those days there were no Greta Thunbergs or DiCaprios to tell us about why we should worry about how many times we fly back to our home countries, the fuel we use in our car, the eco-efficiency of our homes. All these things contribute to our global footprint - that is the impact we as individuals, through our lifestyle, have on the planet. But should we be made to feel guilty that living our lives is killing the planet and leading to the extinction of the human race? According to Dr Guy Midgley, head of the climate change research group of the National Biodiversity Institute South Africa, we live on an unusually stable planet, but periods of cooling and warming naturally happen in cycles. These periods of rising and falling temperatures over the last 500,000 years have been down to levels of methane and CO2 in the atmosphere which are not man-made. Also, levels of solar radiation vary over time and this has a significant impact on global temperatures, most notably in the Earth’s northern hemisphere. Climate change experts believe we are currently between ice ages and that the development of modern industry has had a relatively minor impact on temperatures. Over several thousand years in the earth’s history, temperatures have been higher than they currently are indicating that doing too many school runs or turning on the air con isn’t what’s going to wipe us out. So, it’s not just our fault, but does that mean we should throw caution to the wind? Not at all. Reducing greenhouse gases will slow down global warming and, while we’re the planet’s dominant species, we should do all we can to save the planet. After all, we’re only passing through.
PLANE SAILING DEAR Euro Weekly, With the majority of your readers taking flights backwards and forwards between their home country and Spain it has freaked me out a bit with all the recent news regarding aircraft. Helicopter crashes, malfunctioning landing gear, diverted flights, planes that can’t handle the weather... is it now just a case of say your prayers and hope for the best if we want an easy way to travel? Surely there are enough people working in the aeronautics industry now we can fly more safely. Plane engineers making sure they are suitable to fly. Designers discovering ways to build making fail-safe planes. Weren’t we all supposed to have our own rockets or jet boots by this point? All joking aside, getting on a Ryanair flight is bad enough as it is, before worrying if the flight is going to crash. Maybe they could upgrade their cabins to give some comfort should you be on the last flight you ever take or will they just go the whole hog and replace your one bag allowance with space for a parachute?

Work woes HI Leapy, About right, I have worked in many countries in Europe, Asia and Africa, but have only been discriminated against in Europe. I still have a letter from a major car manufacturer saying that I cannot be considered until their own citizens have all been employed. Basically their labour exchanges etc say the same thing. I have been a manager in the telecoms industry and when I have been told to cut my workforce, there inevitably have been Asian and African engineers among those that had to be cut. For me, the worst part of the job was firing people. The Asians and Africans were almost always among the least productive. This Morning presenter Phillip Schofield announces he is GAY on Instagram this morning! I’m curious as to why now. At his age, time of life etc. I suspect a subtext. Maybe some one else was going to ‘out’ him. Can’t have been nice for his wife to know that for 27 years he was at the very least uncomfortable being with her. An Italian Touch SOME years ago I was working with a company whose offices were round the corner from the famous Italian restaurant Locanda Locatelli, owned by the charismatic Giorgio Locatelli. I was taken for lunch there quite a few times and Giorgio would often come out of the kitchen and have a chat with us. It was Giorgio who would do wonderful things with seasonal vegetables
(and truffles if you had the funds!). He told me that a carbonara should never have cream, only beaten eggs. This is a delicate and creamy dish that shows off the wonderful flavour of fennel. Put a 500g pack of spaghetti into boiling salted water (enough for four people). You now have 10 minutes… Soften a whole
large fennel cut into strips in some olive oil for five minutes. Do not let it colour, just soften. Add two crushed garlic cloves. Then add some chard leaves that have been chopped into thin strips (you could use spinach). Let it wilt then add salt and pepper. Beat four eggs in a bowl and grate in a good handful of parmesan. Mix well. When the spaghetti is ready, add to the pan with a tablespoon of the pasta cooking water. Mix together and leave for 30 seconds. Then mix in the egg and cheese mixture. Feel free to add some more parmesan and black pepper. If you want to spice it up a little, a few chilli flakes will work.

Rougher roads VOLKSWAGEN has unveiled the Taigun, a small SUV designed specifically for the Indian market and due to go into production in 2021, at the New Delhi Auto Expo. The production version of the Taigun will be the first Volkswagen launched under the VW Group’s ‘India 2.0’ project. The new model, similar in size to the European-market T-Cross, is closely related to the Skoda Vision IN concept that has also been unveiled at the event. Both vehicles are built on a new local market version of Volkswagen’s MQB A0 modular platform and will be built alongside each other. The Taigun is marginally longer than the T-Cross, with a wheelbase of 2,651mm. It also offers an increased 205mm of ground clearance, in order to better cope with India’s rougher roads. The exterior design is bespoke to the Taigun, with a more upright design than the T-Cross and greater use of chrome to reflect local tastes.
Inside, the concept features a digital instrument cluster and an 8.0-inch central touchscreen. According to Autocar India, the Taigun will be powered by a 130hp, 1.5litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, with a CNG-powered version also being considered. The Taigun and Vision IN will both gain ‘notchback’ variants - similar to the Brazilian VW Ventos - in the future. While the initial focus for both machines will be India, the VW Group could export them to similar markets including Brazil and South America - in the future.

Muscular luxury THE 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE 63 S is a sensible five-passenger SUV with added touches from the high-performance division of the German global automobile marque. With just over 600 horsepower on tap, the AMG GLE 63 S may look similar to the standard GLS, but there are many noticeable exterior changes, not to mention what’s under the hood. Mercedes-AMG, as always, has done an excellent job of engineering a family SUV that can, if so desired, handle some hot laps around the track. Like all other Mercedes-AMG models, the new GLE 63 S features several exterior modifications to set it apart from its non-AMG counterpart. An AMG-specific radiator grille with vertical louvres, front bumper with a dynamic A-wing design, a power dome hood, and a front splitter in silver. Also, notice the flared wheel arches for a truly muscular appearance. The rear bumper incorporates the diffuser and a unique AMG exhaust system with two rectangular twin tailpipe trims. Power comes from a 4.0-litre twin-
turbo V8 with 603 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. An electric 48-volt EQ Boost starter-generator contributes another 21 hp and 184 lb-ft, which means, for the first time, this particular engine has been electrified. All of that power is directed to the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system through a nine-speed automatic transmission. Expect 0 to 60 mph to happen in just 3.7 seconds while top speed is electronically limited to 174 mph. Due to the sheer amount of power, Mercedes-AMG engineers have included systems such as AMG Active Ride Control for roll stabilisation, an electronically controlled locking differential at the rear, and an advanced braking system. Up front are six-piston fixed brake callipers and 16-inch brake discs, while single-piston floating brake callipers with 14.6inch discs are at the rear. A high-performance ceramic braking system is optional. Mercedes-AMG has not released official pricing, though it will be announced closer to when the 2021 GLE 63 S arrives in dealerships in the middle of the year.

WALKING FOOTBALL LEAGUE CLUBS JOIN FORCES TO HELP FUNDRAISING
WALKING FOOTBALL SPAIN, Smiles, the Walking Dead and Aston Viñuela of the Blue Sky Marbella Walking Football League are linking to assist a lady who is fundraising to help a friend. Michelle Ferretti has been friends with Della Andres for more than 20 years and was shocked three years ago when Della was struck down with ASL (Motor Nuerone Disease) a terminal illness which leaves the sufferer only three to five years to live. Michelle decided she would take up the ‘Six Pack’ Challenge which entails NO alcohol, sugar or carbs and some gruelling exercises every day. This is some feat as Michelle just LOVES all these things!!!! This is over a course o f 75 days. One of Michelle’s friends Rob plays Sunday football with Walking Football Spain and asked if we could assist Michelle. Quickly and unanimously all four clubs agreed. In fact Gray Salt organised a tournament last summer in which the clubs participated raising over €2,000 so we knew Della and what was required. This time it is to contribute to buying a wheelchair friendly people carrier to make it easier for Della to attend hospital appointments and family outings. The League clubs have provisionally organised a Walking Football match for Friday March 13 (TBC) at the Retamar Sports Complex, Benalmadena (next to the Butterfly Park) Kick Off 7.30 pm. (To Be Confirmed) A ‘North Select’ comprising of five players each from Smiles and Aston Viñuela will be taking on five players
each from Walking Football Spain and the Walking Dead forming the ‘South Select.’ Entry will be free and food, drink and music available to ensure a lively atmosphere.
