PROTECTION STRATEGY A STRATEGY for protecting the provincial coastline from the impact of climate change and extreme weather events like last month’s Storm Gloria should be finalised by the beginning of next year, the Spanish Government Sub-delegate has told delegations from Almeria’s coastal municipalities. Manuel de la Fuente met with the representatives of Adra, Roquetas de Mar, El Ejido, Enix, Mojacar, Vera, Cuevas del Almanzora, Pulpi, Balanegra, Almeria, Nijar, Carboneras and Garrucha councils, including the mayors, and key economic and social associations and entities on Friday to update them on the

Once the strategy has been completed, the risk protection measures adopted will be of ‘sufficient scientific soundness’ they will mark out a ‘road map’ so that ‘current and future administrations’ know ‘what they have to do, when and how much it is going to cost,’ the Sub-delegate maintained. The work is being carried out by the Coastal & Marine Union (EUCC), the University of Cantabria’s IHCantabria Hydraulic Environmental Institute, the MedCities network of Mediterranean local authorities and a panel of international experts.

THE PAWS-PATAS animal charity continues to move forward as it enters the start of its fourth decade of operations on the Costa Almeria. “The homing of dogs and cats has never been healthier, not only in Holland, Germany, Belgium and the UK, but locally as well,” the charity’s Chrissie Cremore told Euro Weekly News. What’s more, there has been significant progress on the two major items on the PAWS-PATAS agenda for last year. Chrissie reported that €30,000 has already been raised towards the target of €40,000 for a muchneeded quarantine unit for the PAWS-PATAS shelter, which is expected to be completed before the summer. She particularly praised Ann and Brad Swift for being “a major source of this vital fundraising” through organising a variety of events in Mojacar. Meanwhile PAWS-PATAS’ Trapping, Neutering, Returning (TNR) campaign “has taken a major leap forward,” Chrissie said. Discussions are underway with local councils and a worldwide charity to collaborate on the

The animal charity’s AGM celebrated on Saturday in Turre attracted a record number of members and new people interested in joining, boding well for the charity’s efforts over the coming year to rescue and rehome abandoned cats and dogs and address the local feral cat situation. A new executive committee was voted in. It was also a chance to thank the volunteers
who work in the four PAWS-PATAS fundraising outlets in Mojacar, Turre and Las Buganvillas. “The revenue they raise is paramount and the shelter would not exist without them,” the committee’s Janet Franklin told the meeting. There were special thanks too for Vanessa Maipauw and Sam Spencer, who manage the PAWS-PATAS kennels and cattery. Last year was a very upsetting and exhausting one for both. Parvovirus in dogs and Panleukopenia in cats were virulent due to infected puppies and kit-
tens abandoned at the shelter gates. “These diseases created havoc and it was extremely depressing for all the volunteers because the shelter had to be closed and a major cleaning operation put into play,” Chrissie commented. “Many animals were treated and survived, but sadly there were some fatalities, which was heartbreaking for the volunteers.” The executive committee and volunteers took the opportunity to express their gratitude to all the people who donate items to the charity’s outlets, food, money and time, whether walking the dogs or socialising with the cats. What PAWS-PATAS desperately needs now is a fundraising team, Chrissie told EWN, “people with vision, determination and organisational skills to co-ordinate fun events and raise funds.” The charity is also looking for anyone with IT and website experience. Snowed in vagrant rescued
GUARDIA CIVIL rescued a snowed in vagrant from a bivouac shelter in the Beires mountains. Daytrippers hiking and skiing in the area had informed the Guardia there was someone living in the shelter who had become cut-off by heavy snowfall without sufficient food to survive. A Guardia rescue team was dispatched to check out the situation. Forced to go part of the way on foot due to the accumulation of snow, the officers found 49-year-old FJGL of no fixed abode camped out in the shelter with no provisions. He had been staying there for three months with two dogs for company, and when able doing regular 20-kilometre treks for supplies to Ohanes. The evacuation of the 49-year-old and the dogs proved to be ‘very difficult due to the amount of snow and the tiredness of the assisted man,’ the Guardia reported. They took them to Alhama de Almeria and started procedures for getting the man into the Almeria Municipal Hostel.

Jobless drop ALMERIA registered the biggest fall in unemployment of any province in Andalucia in 2019, according to figures from the EPA Active Population Survey. The provincial unemployment rate closed the year at 18.55 per cent, two points less than the Andalucia average, but five points higher than the national rate.

UNDER the slogan ‘Peace s t a r t s w i t h a s m i l e , ’ Ve r a marked the School Day of Non-Violence and Peace with speeches and music in the town’s main square. Local schoolchildren came together with people assisted by the Asprodalba association for the intellectually disabled and from the adult education school, all wearing the t-shirt designed by the local council for the occasion and with banners they had decorated. Events included the reading out of a manifesto by youngsters from the Vera Municipal Youth Council and an Asprodalba user
reciting a poem she had written herself describing the importance of each and every action in order to achieve a path towards peace. Her participation earned her loud applause and served as the per fect reminder that the day was all about education in and for tolerance, solidarity, har-
mony and respect for human rights. Events also featured a stirring per formance by Vera tenor Enrique Parra. Vera Education councillor Carolina Perez underlined “the importance of living in freedom and a safe country, unlike those children who have to go to other countries as refugees due to the insecurity in their countries of origin. “Peace starts with small gestures in our surroundings, in our municipality, in our homes, in our plaza and with ourselves,” she told the gathering, “small gestures like a friendly word, a smile, and always respecting others.”
Road closed until May
Smugglers caught
A SECTION of the N-340 connecting Aguadulce with Almeria City will remain closed until May while works are carried out to repair the road from where a giant rock crashed down on New Year’s Eve. The Sub-delegate of the Government in Almeria has reported that the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda’s Infrastructure Secretary General has now approved the €649,000 emergency project for a 120-metre stretch of the ‘El Cañarete,’ as the road is more commonly known. The works are expected to take three months to complete. El Cañarete was closed to traffic in both directions after a huge lump of rock came down in the area close to the Hotel Playa Sol in Enix in the early hours of the last day of the year, taking a huge chunk out of the road surface and causing other damage.
ALMERIA police arrested five Algerians for trying to get illegal immigrants into Spain via the Almeria coast. Police said they were in charge of three small boats intercepted on different days en route between the North African nation and the provincial coastline and carrying 40 Algerians in all. The precarious state of the boats and a lack of fuel meant they all ran into trouble before they made it to Almeria. The craft were drifting by the time the authorities caught up with them and rescued everyone on board. According to police the organisations the detainees worked for charged each immigrant the equivalent of between €1,500 and €2,000 to make the crossing. Police investigations carried out with the support of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (FRONTEX), along with interviews with the boat occupants, led to the identification of the five who skippered the craft.

BBC INTERVIEW IN view of Brexit having finally come into action, last Friday January 31, BBC News Europe reporter Gavin Lee spoke to Euro Weekly News’ very own Michel Euesden. Gavin met up with Michel in Mijas Pueblo and said that the general feeling he got from the local British, as quoted by a local bar owner, was that “Nothing is different, but everything has changed.” Michel agreed that she had a similar feeling, as we are yet to see what Brexit really holds for us. Gavin stated that having spoken to local estate agents, there appears to have been a recent decline in British buyers. This is most likely due to people not knowing what the future would hold. Euro Weekly News has also spoken to other channels, and one of them will be doing a post-Brexit documentary which will follow the Euesdens, as well as some of their clients along the coasts of Spain. This documentary will be all about ‘Life as an Expat after Brexit.’ They will be following up to see what changes have been made or felt one, six and 12 months after the initial Brexit date of January 31, 2020. Only time will tell what Brexit truly holds for the British, but as Michel said, Boris stated that this would be “The best for Britain.” Only she would have rather he had said that this change will be “The best for the British people.”
ICY ordeal 35-year-old man and their 41 and 30-year-old wives had set out at around 10am that morning and become disorientated, and were in the Fuente Alta
cortijo area. Given the adverse weather conditions on the day and the difficult terrain it took the Guardia team some hours to get to the lo-
cation, only to find the family were not there. They had in fact continued walking for another two kilometres or so. After establishing which
way they had gone the search continued. Officers walked another kilometre without finding any trace of them, so decided to go back for their vehicles, then continued on for another three kilometres. They again picked up their trail in the Morron de San Jose area. With the snow now 60cms deep, the rescue team was forced to continue on foot, by this time with no mobile phone or transmission equipment coverage. After a four-kilometre trudge they eventually found the family at a height of more than 2,000 metres and with no equipment in a refuge known as La Montera around 2am. The two couples insisted they had rested and were used to long walks, so the party set off to find the vehicles, the two-hour trek taking three hours due to tiredness and a strong blizzard. They eventually reached Celin-Dalias at about six in the morning. The walkers were all suffering from clear signs of hyperthermia.

Spick and span SMALL towns around Almeria are set to look spick and span thanks to a set of shiny new cleaning and maintenance vehicles provided by the provincial government. On Tuesday January 28, the Diputacion de Almeria gave 10 dumpers and 11 sweepers to 21 municipalities with less than 2,000 inhabitants under its 2019 Economic Assistance Plan, with a €500,000 investment to cover the basic cleaning and minor works needs of small localities. Diputacion President Javier A Garcia, accompanied by Presidency deputy Fernando Giminez did the honours of handing the keys and documentation to the mayors of the 21 municipalities at an act staged in the Moises Ruiz pavillion in Almeria City. “The machinery we are handing over today will allow you as local councils to offer a better public service to your residents,” Garcia told the council heads. The Diputacion President maintained the initiative was part of his administration’s policy of “assisting the municipalities which are the smallest and which have the least resources in order to equalise opportunities be-

City council backs €200 million budget Children say yes to peace SCHOOLCHILDREN in Huercal-Overa have said a loud and clear yes to peace. Organised by the council and local schools to mark the School Day of Non-Violence and Peace, pupils from the different municipal education centres marched to the Plaza de la Paz where their representatives read out manifestos in favour of peace. Joining the children and teachers at the event were the Huercal-Overa mayor Francisca Lourdes Fernandez and Education councillor Maria del Mar Meca. “We have to educate our children and teen-
agers about values, rejecting violence in the different spheres in our society, and of course in schools,” the mayor commented. “The different sectors involved have to work with strength and determination to promote positive coexistence, educating with values of respect and solidarity,” Fernandez continued, adding that the different messages which the school representatives sent out “give us the necessary strength and the proof that we are on the right track, working united on different activities and workshops to achieve this objective.”
ALMERIA Council has approved a more than €200 million budget for this year, which Mayor Ramon Fernandez-Pacheco insists will enable the administration “to deal with the city’s real problems.” The 2020 spending plans got the green light with the votes in favour of the governing conservative Popular Party, the centrist Ciudadanos and the far-right Vox. The centre-left PSOE and the farleft Podemos councillors voted against, leading to criticism from the mayor that given the ‘eminently social’ nature of the plans they had put party interests first. Fernandez-Pacheco maintained the budget was “the fruit of political dialogue between different forces” prepared to “put common sense before individual interests.” At exactly €202,451,413.07, the budget total is the highest since 2010 and €6.5 million more than last year, representing a 3.3 per cent increase.

PRIORITIES: The city mayor outlined the council’s aims. For Fernandez-Pacheco the plans are “the expression of the desire shared by all the representatives of Almeria’s residents to serve our city, to create more employment, to generate more wealth and to make Almeria a more attractive city for increasingly more people.” The priorities for this year, the mayor said, are social policy, job creation, sustainability, promoting the city and generating opportunities and investment. “People are at the centre of our
policies,” Fernandez-Pacheco maintained, pointing to plans like greater protection for women who are victims of gender-based violence, elderly people without family nearby, underprivileged children and families and for people suffering from addictions. He highlighted the investment nature of the budget, with more than €15 million allocated to improvements to the historic city centre and outlying districts and on the maintenance of cultural and sports facilities. He talked too about the importance of the environment, promising the council will be planting more than 800 trees this year and aiming to reduce carbon footprints through promoting the use of cycle tracks, public transport and taxis and improving the energy efficiency of street lighting. The mayor also called on other administrations to work towards making the arrival of the AVE highspeed rail link to the city a reality.
New museum plans for Cuevas A MUSEUM dedicated to the German-born artist and typography expert Dieter Emil Sdun is planned for Cuevas del Almanzora. The local council said the new museum will
provide the public with the opportunity to discover the works and legacy of the artist, who for many years lived and worked in the Los Guiraos district of the municipality. There in his Prensa Cicuta workshop he produced books which gained national and international recognition, his work considered a precursor to the use of typography as a means of artistic expression in Spain. The council made the announcement at an event staged at the Marquez de Los Velez castle to pay homage to Sdun, who passed away five years ago. There were speeches from three experts who worked with the artist on various projects: former Almeria school of art printing professor Jose Francisco Martin Pastor; Jaen school of art printing workshop master An-

Conflict resolution talk topic THE best way to deal with violence is the central topic in a programme of talks for young people in Adra. The council’s Social Services department and the Municipal Women’s Centre have worked together on the initiative, under which 200 pupils in municipal schools are learning about the prevention of violent behaviour and conflict resolution. tory methodology, the activity includes explaining the difference between aggression and violence and how to resolve conflict through social habits. The youngsters then have to apply what they have learned to a practical exercise. They also learn about the prevention of violence on social media.
New greener wheels CUEVAS DEL ALMANZORA’S Local Police force has a brand new set of more environmentally friendly wheels. The council’s Public Safety department has acquired for the force a hybrid Hyundai with the Directorate General of Traffic ECO distinction on a ‘renting’ basis. The vehicle boasts the latest technological innovations aimed at improving safety, including an integrated camera, lane change alert and vehicle localisation. Race to raise funds CHILDREN at the Sierra Almagrera school in Villaricos have managed to collect €700 for a children’s cancer charity from a fun, fundraising race. More than 200 children took part in the race last Thursday to help the ARGAR Almeria Association of Parents of Children with Cancer. The school has been organising the races in aid of a good cause in the region for a number of years.

‘No Deal’ Elephant is back by John Smith IN a speech which was widely leaked before he gave it, Boris Johnson made it clear to the European Union that if necessary, he is prepared to walk away from the negotiating table without a deal if he doesn’t get his way. The actual talks don’t start until March, but the Prime Minister is preparing Britain and the EU for a potentially tough battle over the matter of European Union restrictions on Britain in the future. It has been made clear by the THE former European Union President, Donald Tusk has irritated the British government just days after Brexit by saying that an independent Scotland would receive an “enthusiastic” reception if it wanted to rejoin the EU. Whilst accepting that Scotland could not automatically be accepted into the Union, he told Andrew Marr of the BBC that he believed that there might be a case

The reason for this is to ensure that there is no undercutting of pricing by Britain to the detriment of EUbased companies who have to subscribe to tough work policies. Whilst not specifically saying that his target is a ‘no deal’ exit at the end of 2020, Mr Johnson is clear that he wants an agreement based either on the Canadian model which does allow free trade but without EU imposed restrictions or the Australian model which is based more on World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules without allowing complete free trade. Some experts suggest that the WTO option could be as damaging to Britain’s economy as a ‘no deal’ option although at the moment the Prime Minister says that Britain will prosper regardless.

ADRA Council has been recognised for its efforts on recycling electronic and electric devices. The local authority was one of just nine in Andalucia and the only one in Almeria to receive the ‘RAEE Implicate’ award from the FAEL Andalucia Federation of Electrical Appliances and Other Home Equipment for its commitment to the so-called ‘circular economy,’ a system aimed at eliminating waste and the continual use of resources. A council delegation including the councillors for Presidency and Sustainable Development, Jose Crespo and Antonio Sanchez, travelled to Sevilla for the award ceremony. “It is an honour for this council that our work and the joint effort of Adra residents in caring for the environment is recognised,” Crespo commented. Pool extends opening hours THE Adra municipal swimming pool will be extending its opening hours from next Monday February 3. It will be open to the public from 7.30am to 10.30pm. “This was one of the requests from pool users, that due to the lack of flexibility in their working hours they could not practise sport first thing in the morning,” explained the local councillor responsible for the municipal facility, Alicia Heras. The local authority has made it clear that one of its central policy goals is to facilitate local residents’ access to sport and to promote taking up physical exercise in view of the health benefits for both adults and children.

Equinac has launched a campaign to raise funds to cover the costs of an essential heating system to keep the turtles being cared for at its Almerimar rehabilitation centre warm during the winter months. Because turtles’ metabolisms slow down in the colder months due to the lack of heat, their recovery can take longer or complications can develop. VERA Council has for the second year running received regional gover nment funding for actions aimed at helping local families balance their work commitments and their personal lives. The Junta de Andalucia’s Employment, Training and Self-Employed Work department has awarded the local authority a €15,634 subsidy for activities organised at the municipal play centre. The council said the money will allow for extending the play centre’s hours and for providing complementary ‘social participation and stimulation’ activities. “In Vera, as in most of society, the unequal distribution of family and domestic responsibilities between
genders constitutes one of the main obstacles to women’s full participation in the labour market, as well as to their permanence and promotion,” commented play centre activity coordinator Conchi Perez. According to Perez, this in turn perpetuates the “division of women and men in the public and private spheres, pigeonholing women into their role as the carers of the family in all respects, hence assistance such as this allows us to try and reduce the effect of this inequality with services which help women reconcile their working lives and family.” Vera Education councillor Carolina Perez maintained the council is “aware of this real inequality,” pointing out it is mainly
women who use the play centre’s services and resources. She said the administration is therefore “implementing actions aimed at promoting a change of mentality” and a more even division of domestic responsibilities and tasks and in availability of free time “especially between the youngest mothers and fathers in our municipality, where we are achieving the greater involvement of the fathers in the daily work of the play centre activities.” The play centre service “offers Vera residents the possibility of this reconciliation being a reality and a benefit to both men and women, and children, and impact directly on the wellbeing of our population,” the councillor affirmed.

Music school moving forward WORKS on the new Huercal-Overa municipal music school are progressing at quite a pace, and should be completed in the autumn, the construction company says. Mayor Francisca Lourdes Fernandez and Treasury councillor Juan Garcia paid a visit to the site this week to see how it was all going. The mayor said the council was meanwhile working on the necessary administrative procedures in order that the Junta de
Andalucia officially recognises the studies which it is planned the school will offer from the next 2020-2021 academic year onwards. Fernandez explained that in order for the school’s activities to get underway in the first term of the next academic year, an alternative space will be made available until the new facility is up and running. She said this will make it possible to offer basic music teaching with teachers contracted by the council “without having to delay
for the estimated period for the reception of the building.” Once the works have been concluded the building will need to be kitted out, “for which we are going to include a financial section in the current year’s budget,” she added. The municipal investment in the project is nearly €920,000. It will be a three-storey building, of 1,000sqm in all. Facilities will include classrooms, an audition hall, changing room, terrace and teachers’ room.
Rock on Adra ADRA is now confirmed as the v e n u e f o r t h i s s u m m e r ’s T h e Juergas Rock festival. Mayor Manuel Cortes has signed a collaboration agreement with the company organising the three-day event, which will run from August 6 to 8. “The council has worked intensively since the day after the close of The Juergas Rock 2019 so the festival is celebrated yet another year in our town,” the mayor commented. Cortes described the event as “the biggest rock musical festival of the summer in Almeria Province, and consequently a catalyst for the town given the massive number of people who come every year to enjoy good music in a privileged location in Adra with views of the sea.”
It was therefore, the mayor stressed, “very important for us to reach an agreement with the organisers to keep this festival in Adra this year.” Cortes “thanked” the organisers for continuing to back Adra “for the celebration of such an important event which has such an important impact on local tourism, culture and the economy. “Every edition we take stock, which reflects that the celebration of The Juergas Rock Festival generates a very important impact for the municipality, with the creation of hundreds of direct and indirect jobs,” he added. “What’s more it impacts very positively on our trade and hospitality sectors, and we support any event which develops this sector.”

What to do in the event of an emergency in Spain Living in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. IN Spain there are two groups which most people would understand as being ‘the police.’ The National Police (Policía Nacional) who have jurisdiction in the towns and cities and the Guardia Civil outside the towns and cities. The Local Police are employed by town halls; they basically deal with property found, and enforce local laws. Whilst they have a power of arrest, when exercised they must take the arrested person to the National Police or Guardia Civil according to where the c r i m e t o o k place. National Police and the Guardia Civil deal with all crimes, missing persons etc in their jurisdiction. The National Police also deal with all applications for immigration paperwork, NIEs, EU Citizens Registration and for non EU nationals, Residencia, etc. Throughout Europe the general number for all emergencies is 112. In Spain the operators speak English, French, German and Italian, in addition to Spanish and will liaise with the emergency services when the caller does not speak Spanish. No area code is needed and the number can be called from any phone, including
mobiles even those without a Spanish SIM card or any credit. You can also fax or SMS 112. The 24 hours national emergency numbers for Spanish speakers are: 091 - police, 061 - health emergencies 080 - firefighters. By calling 902 102 112, one can give details of certain crimes, including:burglaries, car theft, theft or loss of documents or belongings. The service is available in English 9am to 9pm seven days a week, and 9am to 3pm in French, German and Italian. Having given details, you must go to the National Police station which you nominate, within 48 hours to make the report using the information supplied on the telephone. In the case of robbery, where threat or force has been used, victims should call 112 for police attendance, or go to the police station to make a report. Other useful number are - 016, to report instances of gender violence. For problems at sea, the Maritime Rescue Service (Salvamento Seguridad Maritmo) can be contacted on 900 202 202, and the Red Cross (Cruz Rojo) on 902 222 292. There is also a Red Cross 24-hour helpline 900 100 333.

Pioneer education initiative ADRA Council has launched a pioneer initiative for the locality aimed at promoting educational habits in the family which guarantee the protection and development of children. Organised by the local authority’s Social Services and Education departments, the Municipal Women’s Information Centre and the Health and Youth departments, The ‘Family School’ features a dozen education-related talks. Session topic titles include ‘Being mothers and fathers,’ ‘Am I making good use of new technology,’ ‘How to talk as a family,’ ‘Education starts at home,’ ‘Rules and limits within the family,’ ‘Conflict resolution,’ ‘Genderbased violence in adolescents’ and ‘Education in effort and responsibility.’ The Social Services and Education councillors, Patricia Berenguel and Pedro Peña, explained the motives behind the talks, which will

economic crisis and family breakdowns. “Being mothers and fathers is complex, continuous and gratifying, but at the same time difficult as we do not know what the necessary tools are for the job, which comes with no instruction manual,” he said. For this reason, the councillor said, the local authority developed the programme “to help learn said tools and useful orientations which will allow, not only parents, but also grandparents, aunts and uncles and other family members, to be better equipped in dealing with the task of education within the family home.” The talks will start on February 12 and will run until midDecember. All will be held at Adra’s Centro de Interpretacion de la Pesca, running from 10am to 12pm. THERE is some good news and bad news for the Spanish economy following a report published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) which shows that it grew by 2 per cent in 2019. The bad news is that government forecasts called for a 2.1 per cent increase but the good news is that the Bank of Spain and the Interna tional Monetary Fund got it spot on and the European Commission ex pected it to be as low as 1.9 per cent. For six years now the GDP has shown an increase, but there is no doubt that the increase is slowing down and for 2020 and 2021, fore casts are suggesting that it will be static at 1.6 per cent each year. Whilst exports continue to rise and help the figures dramatically, the home market is not just stag nant but is actually losing ground

However, the pound didn’t have a great end to the year, with GBP/EUR hitting lows of €1.14 be fore stabilising around €1.17. EUR/GBP, meanwhile, fluctuated between €0.84 and €0.87 while GBP/USD drifted to $1.30.
CURRENCY NEWS: The pound didn’t have a great end to the year. What’s been happening? Sterling’s fall from grace came swiftly after the Conservative’s election victory, as Boris Johnson amended his EU withdrawal bill to legally block any extension to the Brexit transition period past De cember 2020. This effectively leaves Johnson with just 11 months in which to ne gotiate a new trade deal with the
EU or leave the UK to face a nodeal Brexit at the end of the year. This sparked significant concern amongst GBP investors who had hoped the passing of Johnson’s withdrawal bill would help to bring more clarity to Brexit. While the spectre of Brexit con tinues to hang over Sterling, the currency has also been feeling the heat thanks to the rising odds of
the BoE cutting interest rates in the near future. Several BoE policymakers have hinted in recent weeks about a pos sible rate, including Governor Mark Carney who said the bank would re spond ‘promptly’ if economic weak ness persisted. This speculation has been fuelled by a run of underwhelming UK da ta, including a surprise contraction of growth in November and the lowest inflation reading in over threeyears. The euro, meanwhile has been fluctuating in response to mixed domestic data, with manufacturing remaining in contraction territory but inflation edging towards the Eu ropean Central Bank’s (ECB) target. What do you need to look out for? Looking ahead, Brexit develop ments and Bank of England (BoE) interest rate speculation are likely to remain the main catalysts of movement in the pound over the
next four weeks. The UK is all set to leave the EU on January 31 and this will no doubt thrust Brexit back into the spotlight and limit upside in GBP exchange rates. German data will remain one of the biggest causes of euro move ment in the weeks ahead. If fears for the country’s growth outlook grow, the common currency could be pressured lower. As it stands, the outlook for the GBP/EUR exchange rate is neutral negative at the start of 2020. LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT ONE extremely enlightening, and somewhat disquieting fact to emerge from this Coronavirus outbreak, is how incredibly easy it was for the Chinese authorities to shut down 10 cities. This actually involved some 33 million inhabitants. That is almost half of the whole United Kingdom - and the communist hierarchy managed to lock them all down almost overnight. Can you imagine trying to close down half the UK at that speed? It would take a fortnight’s debate in parliament before you could even begin. The Chinese then proceeded to build two new hospitals in a week. The UK could take up to 10 years to even get planning permission! Mind you, that of course is how a dictatorship works; heaven forbid the democratic countries of the world being taken over by despots of this nature. And frankly, that’s

why the Chinese leaders worry me. If they have this sort of hold over so many people and decided to galvanise them onto a war footing, we could have half a billion on the doorstep before you could say Chicken
Chow Mein. Bearing all this in mind, I think that allowing China, with its utterly alien and therefore completely unpredictable society to install a cyber system throughout the whole of the United Kingdom is
utter madness. If their inscrutable leaders don’t take the opportunity to insert some form of ‘bug’ into the Huawei project, I’ll eat my bat soup. Talking of which, have you seen the recent videos on social media showing what these people actually do eat!? Basically they scoff on just about anything. Dogs, cats, monkeys, live mice, living fish, rats, fried excretion and human fetuses - to name but a few. Some of the stuff they serve up in their restaurants makes the ‘I’m A Celebrity’ trials look like a Jamie Oliver gourmet night! Is it any wonder this virus has jumped from animals to humans? If they continue gorging on this type of menu, I should think there are plenty, even more deadly diseases just waiting to cross over. It wouldn’t surprise me if AIDS didn’t originate from somewhere in this inscrutable Far
Eastern direction either. No, I think we should be very wary of the Chinese. Have you ever had an argument with a waiter in a Chinese restaurant? It doesn’t take much for the whole staff to join in and the chef to appear with a meat cleaver. Don’t take my word for it. This is a quote from prophesies of old Mother Shipton in the 15th century. ‘And Christian one fights Christian two. And nations sigh, yet nothing do. And yellow men great power gain, from mighty bear (Russia?) with whom they’ve lain.’ Unquote. I also think the numbers of fatalities that have resulted from this virus are far higher than they are actually divulging. 40th Anniversary of Danish church CONSULAR MATTERS I AM always proud to manage the huge community of expat Danish people in Andalucia and Extremadura. The Danish colony on the Costa del Sol is of approximately 30,000 people who come from a country with a population of 5.5. million. As Consul and lawyer, I am used to attending many cultural, institutional and social events; but for this particular one, I was very proud to attend, together with the Ambassador for Denmark in Spain Mr Jens Kisling, last Saturday January 26, the 40th anniversary of the Danish Church of Málaga West Coast. The Danske Kirke øst for Málaga has been on the Costa Del Sol since the year 1980, and is, obviously, an important part of the Danish community. As Dan-

The Consulate has regular activities such as issuing passports, helping Danish businesses in Spain and net-
working relations with Spanish and Danish businesses; however religion is an important part in the lives of a great number of people, so we are more than happy to support them as much as possible.
As part of the events organised by the Danish Church (Den Danske Kirke øst for Málaga) to celebrate its 40th anniversary, the Ambassador and I were invited to attend a mass followed by a dinner at the fabulous Cuevas de Nerja restaurant. We had a chance to meet and talk with more than 100 attendees who told us about their experiences, concerns and general life in Spain. As part of the celebrations, we were also treated to a flamenco dancing exhibition which the Ambassador and I greatly enjoyed. The Danish Church mass is currently being officiated at the Catholic Church, who has allowed their place of worship to be used by the Danish priest and expats to celebrate their service and also have the use of their facilities. This is a very true indicator of the close relationship that exists between the Danish expats and Spanish society in general.
The Danske Kirke ost for Málaga is not only a place of religious worships, but also strives to promote social, cultural and charitable activities such as organising cinema film forums (Danish and Spanish films). At some point in the past the Church decided to separate their religious activities from the social ones, and a few years ago created the Danish Club of Torre Del Mar (Velez-Málaga). They also host musical events and organise visits to other cities in Andalucia. In addition, they hold a traditional Danish Christmas market, a real home from home experience in Spain. So, in my capacity as Danish Consul, I want to congratulate the Danish Church in its 40th anniversary, I hope they continue their service to the local community and support the close relationship with the Spanish community on the Costa Del Sol.

Burger and chips in less than five minutes - Miso Robotics unveils its robot kitchen assistant RONNIE ROCKS THE TECH ACCORDING to a McKinsey & Company analysis, 73 per cent of the activities food service workers perform have the potential for automation. This might seem like cause for alarm, but Miso Robotics, a startup developing automation products for fast-food and quick-service restaurant kitchens, asserts machines can boost productivity by working with humans as opposed to wholly replacing them. To this end, Miso this morning unveiled the Miso Robot on a Rail (ROAR),
which it describes as the ‘next generation’ of ‘costefficient’ robotic assistant solutions for restaurant chains. It’s basically the evolution of Miso’s previous robot, Flippy, albeit affixed to a movable rail as opposed to a groundmounted base. ROAR - which is expected to begin shipping commercially by the end of 2020 for around €30,000, or half the cost of Flippy can be installed on a floor or under a standard kitchen hood, allowing it to work two stations and interact with a cold storage hopper. On the software side, it benefits from improvements to Miso AI (Miso’s eponymous cloudbased platform) that expands the number of

of cameras and safety scanners, obtaining frozen food and cooking it without assistance from a human team member. It alerts nearby workers
when orders are ready to be served, and it takes on tasks like scraping grills, draining excess fry oil, and skimming oil between frying as it recognises and monitors items like baskets and burger patties in real time. Plus, it integrates with point-of-sales systems (via Miso AI) to route orders automatically and optimise which tasks to perform. The eventual aim is that a customer would walk through the door of a café/bar/restaurant and by using their mobile phone make an order for food and within the time it takes to cook the food, pick it up at the counter, with no human involved! Mm… wouldn’t like to meet the complaints robot!

THIS week, I’m writing about the NHS, charities and timewasting 999 phone calls. What’s the connection, I hear you say. Well, bear with me, but if you can’t stomach any further mention of the NHS or charities, go and have a cup of tea or flick ahead to the crossword page... According to press reports, A&E waiting times in UK hospitals are at their worst on record as the NHS is coming under increasingly intense pressure. The grim statistics are likely to add to growing fears that services could really struggle to cope this winter with the annual spike in demand all the more since the coronavirus outbreak has been getting worse. As for charities, according to the think tank, New Philanthropy Capital, they’re becoming more and more numerous in affluent areas of the UK instead of where they’re really needed. The north-south charity deficit is
highlighted by figures showing that, per 1,000 population, the affluent Cotswolds has nine times as many charities as Blackpool England’s most deprived local authority - which has just 0.6. Some things don’t change, though - for the UK emergency services. And that’s the number of bizarre/ hoax 999 calls made to it. How about a woman complaining that she’d been sent three saveloy and chips from the chip shop instead of one? Or a man asking for the time, and another complaining about a packet of biscuits being out of date? The Met has released audio of some of these bizarre calls with a plea for people to use 999 for genuine emergencies only. Chief Supt David Jackson said nuisance calls
were a “huge waste” of resources, adding: “These hoax calls block the number from other members of the public who could be calling 999 in a real emergency, keeping people in danger waiting for longer and putting lives at risk.” The Met’s call handlers identified 22,491 hoax 999 calls in the first 11 months of 2019. In 1937, in just the first week of the 999 service, there were 91 hoax calls! As I said, little change there, then. BRAVE CHOICE WHY on earth do some people get so worked up about migrants, don’t they realise they are migrants themselves? I was unfortunately witness to a group of lads verbally abusing some ‘Lookie Lookie’ men, it was pretty shameful. It made me embarrassed to be British. Those people rescued in boats are putting their lives at risk because their life is so unbearable that they choose to come here for a better life, just like expats. In some ways, it could be seen as very brave. It’s time to stop using such narrow-minded and racist language on such a sensitive issue, especially when people are risking their lives and dying just for the chance for opportunities that the rest of us take for granted. Being lucky in which part of the world you were born in doesn’t give you the right to demean those less fortunate. Many expats come to Spain and make no effort at all to adapt to the culture and way of life. Whatever their opinion of the migrant situation, they should get off their ignorant high horses and have a bit of humanity. A disappointed Carol Evans
Meat less CORONAVIRUS, swine flu, mad cow disease… live animals are the largest source of infection. The more you are going to move animals, the more you run the risk that diseases will be spread through these animals. Animal trade is an effective way of introducing, maintaining and spreading animal diseases, as observed with the spread of different strains of foot and mouth disease in Africa and Asia. The real issue is in many of the low-income countries there are new opportunities for money to be made which then includes increased meat demand. If the human race were to change its diet to meat free this situation would fade. Each person who goes vegan saves nearly 200 animals every year from daily suffering and a terrifying death: Filthy factory farms, abattoirs, and meat markets threaten the health of every human being on the planet.

Scared to go home I AM an avid reader of the Euro Weekly News and have been since I moved to Spain. With thoughts on moving back to my home town of London after a few years of unsuccessfully jumping between underpaid jobs, I find myself pretty scared as to what is happening there. While everything should be done to put a stop to these type of offences, it makes me wonder how did a situation that used to be a minority of people involved in drug-related and gang activity become a majority? I fear for my wife and my kids that I must now take them from somewhere we had considered would have been a paradise and our dream back to something that might put their lives in danger. No early release WITH news this weekend of another Islamist terrorist attack in London, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is under attack and being pushed for answers as to why an Islamist terrorist was freed from prison early allowing him to commit a bloody atrocity within days, despite his own pleas to be kept behind bars for longer. When the London Bridge terror attack happened in November Johnson promised he would end automatic early release for terrorists. However, he is again facing anger about the ‘lack of progress’ with the changes leaving the capital open to another attack just months later. Sudesh Amman walked free last week, halfway through a three year and four-month sentence for 13 terror offences. On Sunday he rampaged through Streatham high street, stabbing two before he was shot dead. The Queen’s Speech in December committed to bringing forward legislation to remove the possibility of early release for the most dangerous offenders. However, the Counter-Terrorism Bill that would bring the measures into force has yet to be published and there is no timetable for it to start going through Parliament. Johnson’s recent comments echoed those made after London’s last terror attack when two people were killed by convicted terrorist Usman Khan in December. Khan, 28, had been attending a prisoner rehabilitation event after being released on licence in December 2018. Last month details of The Counter-Terrorism Bill were released. They included forcing dangerous terrorists who receive extended sentences to serve the whole time behind bars and stopping early release from jail for those classed as dangerous.

Nightmare receptionists MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man WHAT is it with doctor’s receptionists? I remember when I was living in the UK how, on the rare occasion I had to go to the doctor, it was a nightmare. They never wanted to let you have an appointment. They’d ask all sorts of very personal questions in front of the whole waiting room. They’d be generally rude and very possessive over ‘their’ boss. Apparently, I should know when I am going to need help so I can make an appointment two weeks in advance. And trying to make an appointment by ‘phone required constant redial just to be able to get through. So I love the fact that here you can go online and make your appointment yourself and bypass the dreaded receptionist. That was until I had an appointment with a specialist and unfortunately missed it because I was in
hospital at the time. I thought nothing of it. I let the doctor know because Mrs S turned up and told her I couldn’t make it and she said she wanted to see me when I came out of hospital. So we went to make an appointment a few days later and the receptionist said that on my notes the doctor wanted to see me every six months. Therefore I couldn’t have an appointment before even after explaining what had happened. She would have absolutely none of it and finally said if it was an emergency go to A & E. She wouldn’t even ask the doctor if she wanted to see me. So some things never change. I’m still trying, but it’s not easy. Any ideas? I might have mentioned this before but someone has to explain to me why it is OK for a woman to say to another woman that she looks fabulous in her outfit but as a bloke I can’t? Why can’t men compliment women the same as other women do. Where’s the equality? Why can’t I say your hair looks great today, have you had it cut? Is that creepy? But if her female friend says it it’s OK. So ladies if I do see you I’m sorry I have to pretend that I haven’t noticed how lovely you look, but I have really.

Pause to protect HOW much we all keep being bombarded with dire warnings on Climate Change and our need to take urgent action! And whilst I may feel that some of the warnings seem a touch exaggerated as global temperatures appear to have fluctuated wildly over the millennia, long before humanity existed to be blamed as primary cause, yet as a Christian, there is much in these warnings that resonates with my understanding of the Christian faith. For way back in the opening passages of the Bible, we find God giving people responsibility to ensure the delicate balance of His creation is properly managed and maintained, and in that aspect of our role it would seem we have significantly failed. Of course the Bible isn’t a scientific document detailing how the Universe was formed, with full user instructions on maintenance and servicing, nor should it ever be thought of in that way. On the contrary, the Bible serves primarily to give us some appreciation of why we’re here and how best we may assist God in maintaining and developing that
part of His creation over which we have influence. So the Bible endeavours to illustrate, not how God created the Universe as in what forces were used in its creation, but rather some of the reasons why. The Bible also gives some fairly detailed indications as to how the Earth should be maintained, with the oft repeated principle of one in seven rest for people, animals, land and resources. Time and again the Bible teaches the need for a day of rest each week, of the need to rest land one year in seven, to rotate crops so land, as well as animals and people are not exhausted, but given time to properly recuperate and rebuild strength. And it isn’t just the Christian Church that’s founded on this principle of properly managing our God-given resources, but Judaism and Islam similarly acknowledge this same God, who all accept we fail when the resources we have are plundered for our own selfish needs without protecting and developing them for future generations as agents of God. This indeed is our God-given role in life and it’s time we all started working together in His service.

Flamenco fans in for a treat FLAMENCO fans are in for a real treat this month, when singer, composer and guitarist Jose Merce performs at the Teatro Auditorio in Roquetas de Mar. His show will feature songs in the best known flamenco styles, among them ‘malagueñas’ (fandangos from the Malaga area), deeply expressive ‘seguiriuyas’ and lively ‘alegrias.’ Merce is one of the best known flamenco singers in the country. He has been performing at flamenco festivals since he was a child, has put out 17 albums over the course of his career and has sold 600,000 records in the last 15 years. One Sauce, two meals! LIKE a lot of people, every now and then I have the craving for something a bit spicy with big flavours. Spicy and fragrant is the way I like to go, not too hot, not something that will strip the taste buds from the tongue, but something that will gently warm and fill my mouth with interesting flavours. Once made, a curry sauce will last for days and can provide the base for a couple of very different meals. This one is very simple and I got two suppers in a week from it. A chicken biryani and fish curry, made with some brilliant frozen hake fillets. In a frying pan soften some finely chopped onions. Once they start to colour add some garlic and grated ginger. After another minute
add a teaspoon of garam masala and chilli powder. Add a small amount of water to loosen the mixture, then a small carton of tomato passata. Season with salt and pepper and let it thicken and putter away for about 10 mins. Add a tablespoon of plain yoghurt and mix in a cube of butter to finish. The sauce is now ready. I had it with some cubes of chicken breast that I’d marinated in yoghurt and spices then cooked under the grill and added to some basmati rice with a couple of spoons of the sauce. A few days later I gently poached some chunks of defrosted hake and added some blanched green beans. Enjoy!

Carnival coming CARNIVAL is just around the corner, and Almeria City will be celebrating it to the full with a packed agenda of activities, including several novelties. For starters, this year there will be a procession of carnival troupes from other parts of the province at 12 midday on Sunday February 16 in the Paseo Almeria. Other carnival highlights will include the events for kids on Saturday February 22 in the Mirador de la Rambla, featuring bouncy castles and attractions and a children’s competition. Also the big parade at 12 midday on Sunday February 23, going from the Paseo Almeria and along Obispo Orbera and the Rambla to end up in the amphitheatre, followed by the traditional ‘Burying of the Sardine’ on March 1. Among the complementary events will be a medieval fantasy market run-
ning from Friday February 21 to Sunday February 23 and an artisans’ market from Friday February 28 to Sunday March 1 in the area extending from the Mirador de la Rambla to the Plaza de las Velas.

Sloth; Sin or Lifestyle Choice? SUZANNE MANNERS IT is said that; “The devil makes work for idle hands to do.” Meaning that unless one is in a constant state of ‘busyness’ then the Devil will slip in and wreak havoc… and if you’re lucky he will have his wicked way with you (it is no accident that Rosemary’s husband was a ‘resting’ actor). Parents around the world will recognise the glint of devilry that descends on a bored child (I have an older brother so I know of what I speak) and the dreaded silence that engulfs the house when the possessed child finds the tub of Sudocrem. This notion of saintliness via useful endeavour was thrust upon us by the good old Victorians who liked nothing better than to send all and sundry off to the Workhouse for
SLOTH: Why is it deserving of such a bad press? crimes as heinous as having one leg, being in possession of blind eyes and being hungry. ‘The undeserving poor’ were looked down upon as being feckless, lazy and downright criminal. The notion of a piety
inherent in hard work permeated the wizened uncharitable thoughts of those who owned the means of production... useful really when your own wealth derives from the labours of others.
‘Freedom through work’ (a nasty little quote slung up with gleeful wickedness at the entrance of Nazi Concentration camps) wormed its way in and breathed its fetid fumes of self righteousness upon us. But is Sloth deserving of such a bad press? The artist Tolouse Lautrec spent most of his time hanging out at the Moulin Rouge drinking Absinthe and ogling the Can Can dancers, Constable wandered aimlessly through fields and meadows and Da Vinci’s portfolio is famously thin. Without moments of inaction great art, inventions, ideas and poetry would be lost. How poor life would be if we did not stop and smell the roses, or chat to a cat, or shoot the breeze with a loved one. There is nothing better in this life than sitting outside a cafe reading a newspaper or standing at the edge of the sea and watching the tide ebb and flow. The poet W H Davies wrote,
‘poor life this if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare.’ The perfect Sunday for me consists of throwing random ingredients into a crockpot then spending a whole day in pyjamas reading a book or binge watching Peaky Blinders (oh my goodness how blue are Cillian Murphy’s eyes!!... next week Lust). Life is short but is full of wonders and beauty to compensate for our inevitable end. How sad if we were not to take advantage of that compensation and on our deathbeds could only imagine the sunsets unseen, the seas unswum and the words unspoken. So Dear Reader a little bit of Sloth calms the heart and rests the weary soul in readiness for dodging the slings and arrows of the workday we call life. I’m off to contemplate Irish eyes. Toodle pip.
Little things that bring me joy
BARRY DUKE A WHILE back I wrote a piece entitled ‘Little things that annoy a lot.’ In it I listed several issues that had the effect of sending me into fits of fury. Soon after, a friend said how well the column had resonated with her. But she added, ‘surely there must be many things that bring you joy.’ ‘Certainly,’ I replied and gave as an example my discovery that, of all the food outlets in the Benidorm area, there appears to be only one offering crunchy peanut butter at a reasonable price. Lidl’s Mr Choc brand comes in just under €3.00 for 454 grams. Being a crunchy peanut butter addict this was like striking gold, and I bought four jars just in case the product vanished from its shelves. I then sat down and listed a number of other things that delight me. Topping the list are magnificent sunsets which I never tire of gazing at. Periodically I post pictures of

One in particular, Bob Hutton, a deranged Kent-based evangelist who’s been trolling me for years, responded to my latest post by writing ‘God made the sunset. You must repent of your filth or face Hellfire!’
Sigh! And people wonder why I have been treading the path of godlessness since I was a kid. The rediscovery of recipes for dishes I haven’t cooked in years is something else that brings me joy. Back in the day my favourite was chilli con carne. I’d completely forgotten about this dish until I saw that Carrefour was selling its key ingredient - red
kidney beans - for just over €1 a can. So I rushed home and made a huge pot of the stuff, only to discover that the hubby HATES beans. So now there’s enough in our freezer to feed half of Benidorm. Also on my ‘joy’ list are vintage comedians such as Victor Borge, a Dane who combined comedy routines with music in the mid-20th century. When I found that many
of his performances can be found on YouTube, I let out a whoop of delight. My list also includes songs with clever and meaningful lyrics. A while back I discovered Tom T Hall, an American country singer and lyricist, now aged 83, but it was only this week that I found that he’d lampooned racists in a pre-Trump era song called ‘The Man Who Hated Freckles.’ Using freckled people as a metaphor for folk of colour, he sang: Oh, he hated every freckle that he saw / He said they should be shot down by the law / They oughta send them all back where they’re from / And he said would you let your daughter marry one? / And them freckled folks are running down the neighbourhood we’re in / We wouldn’t have the trouble we have seen if it wasn’t for that Martin Luther Queen. ‘The Man Who Hated Freckles’ should be adopted as an anthem by all who deplore the rise in intolerance unleashed in the UK by Brexit and in the US by its infantile orange President.

Harrier donation to bush fire victims HARDY runners and walkers with the Indalo Hash House Harriers braved the high ground of Chirivel immediately after the late January rain and snow storms, raising €120 for victims of the Australian bush fires. Wildfire prevention investment THE Junta de Andalucia is planning to invest just short of €900,000 in wildfire prevention measures in the Sierra Maria-Los Velez mountains. The regional government’s Agriculture, Fishing and Sustainable Development department is to allocate €886,000 to actions in 177 hectares of the municipalities of Urracal, Velez-Blanco, Velez-Rubio and Somontin as part of an Andalucia-wide project for public
forested areas. The measures will be aimed specifically at reducing the risk of fires breaking out by eliminating the vertical and horizontal continuity of vegetation, and at mitigating the effects of blazes should they occur. The Junta actions, which are currently being put out to contract, will affect around 1,500 hectares, nearly all protected areas, in 31 Andalucia municipalities.

A white Macael marble figure of the artist created by well-known Arboleasbased sculptor Luis Ramos now stands proudly in the courtyard of what is destined to become the Gines Parra museum, ensuring his name lives on 124 years after he was born in Zurgena. The sculpture depicts the artist out looking towards the horizon, paintbrush in hand. Almeria provincial government Culture and Cinema deputy Manuel Guzman and New Technologies, Safety and Property deputy Domingo Fernandez were among the dignitaries who attended the official unveiling ceremony. Also there were Zurgena mayor Luis Diaz, Olula Del Rio deputy mayor Jose Sanchez and members of Gines Parra’s family. Parra is described as Almeria’s representative in the so-called Paris School. Civil officers coming to Albox streets A NEW force of civic officers to keep an eye out for anti-social behaviour is set to be introduced in Albox in the coming months. Uniformed personnel will be patrolling the streets of the town, their job to promote and guarantee peaceful coexistence among residents and to prevent conflicts and unsocial actions. The presence of civic officers is already fairly common in other parts of Spain,

The council has now published on its website information regarding the selection and employment of the new officers, with the criteria candidates for the jobs must meet and details of what they would be expected to do.
Hopefuls must be of Spanish nationality, aged over 16 and have a driving licence, as well as at least a secondary level education. Language skills and professional experience in similar posts will work in candidates’ favours in the selection process. The information clarifies that the civic officers will in no way take the place of the Local Police force. They will be in permanent contact with Local Police, but will not have the authority to issue sanctions.
Rather the new force’s responsibilities will include promoting and raising awareness about the correct use of public property, notifying the Local Police of disrespectful actions, providing members of the public with practical information on public transport, telephone numbers and places of interest, giving directions, and generally encouraging residents to follow regulations related to civic behaviour. Their roles will therefore cover matters like taking note of people making a lot of noise, dog owners allowing their pets to do their business in the street or run loose, dropping litter, vandalism and parking issues. In short, “they are people who are going to help residents and give them information on how to behave correctly,” the mayor said. The idea is that there will be civic officers on duty throughout Albox and that each will be allocated to a particular area.
Countdown to carnival THE countdown has begun to Albox’s carnival celebrations. The local council promises this year there will be even more prizes for groups taking part in the big procession on Saturday February 15. The group judged to be the best on the basis of the number of participants, originality, theme, music and choreography will be rewarded for their efforts with €500. This year’s procession will start from the Centro Agua y Salud at 6pm, and will feature floats, dance troupes, stilt walkers, acrobats, illuminated angels, giant inflatables, pyrotechnics and more.

Split personality hybrid
VAUXHALL is continuing its journey towards electrification with the new Grandland X Hybrid4 all-wheel drive plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. This is Vauxhall’s first-ever plug-in hybrid and features state-of-the-art plug-in hybrid technology. The car’s powertrain comprises a 200hp, 1.6-litre turbocharged direct injection four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric drive system with two electric motors, all-wheel drive and a 13.2kWh lithium-ion battery. Together, the Euro 6d-TEMP-compliant petrol engine and electric motors produce up to 300hp, and offer a combined fuel consumption of 204mpg, emitting just 34g/km CO2. The Grandland achieves 060 mph in just 5.9 seconds. The front electric motor is coupled to an electrified eight-speed automatic transmission, while the second motor and differential are integrated into the electrically-powered rear axle, providing all-wheel traction on demand. Four driving modes are available, electric, hybrid, AWD and Sport. In pure electric mode, the car has a range of 35 miles. In hybrid mode, the car automatically se-
lects the most efficient method of propulsion. When travelling at low speeds, for example, the system switches to electric mode for zero-emission driving. The Grandland X Hybrid4 comes with a 3.7kW on-board charger, with an optional 7.4kW version also available. The ‘e-Save’ section of the infotainment system allows the driver to determine how much battery energy needs to be reserved to ensure that the vehicle reaches its destination when in a zero-emissions zone. The driver can choose to save six or 12 miles of range, or reserve all of the battery energy. Drivers can access ‘e-Save’ via the infotainment system. In addition, regenerative braking captures kinetic energy during deceleration that would otherwise be dissipated as heat. The customer can choose from two recuperation modes that turn the electric motors into generators, allowing electrical energy to be returned to the battery and stored. To further improve efficiency, the Grandland X Hybrid4 features a regenerative braking system, which can increase the electric range by up to 10 per cent. Continuing Vauxhall’s reputation for class-leading on-board technology, the Grandland features the new Vauxhall Connect telematics service. This includes Live Navigation as well as the ability to check key vehicle data via an app. Direct connection w i t h road-
side assistance provides the driver and passengers with additional peace-ofmind. Help can be reached within seconds by pressing the red button on the centre console. If the seatbelt tensioners or the airbags are deployed, the emergency call is activated automatically.
