TWIN TRAGEDY MOTHER HID PREGNANCY: Police ordered to attend Vinalopó Hospital. day in prison as she is being investigated for two counts of murder. It is understood that the woman, who is described as being in her 30’s and of Spanish nationality, hid her pregnancy from her family and once her waters broke, she locked herself in the bathroom of her parents’
house where she went into labour. She then stayed inside the bathroom for approximately two hours during which time she lost consciousness due to the significant amount of blood lost. Her parents had tried to enter the bathroom but were unable to open the
door as it had been locked from the inside. Finally, they were able to force entry inside and rushed their daughter and the two newborns to Vinalopó Hospital. However, sadly it was too late to save their lives, as the children had already died. The head of the court had received details from the hospital after the suspect’s admission, in which he was alerted to what had happened. This caused him to then insist that police go to the hospital to remove the bodies of the minors in order to give them further time to investigate.

HELPFUL INFORMATION: Public Health services offer advice.
Virus advice THE councillor for Health of Orihuela, José Galiano, reported on Tuesday that the department is working in coordination with the Public Health services regarding the ‘Coronavirus’ in order to detect and prevent possible cases, although to date none have been detected in the municipality. Likewise, Galiano has an-
nounced that if anybody is interested in obtaining information about the virus they “can do so through the website of the Ministry of Health,” since in this website “you can consult symptoms, frequently asked questions, and the procedure of action against cases of infection.” Galiano has also assured that at this time “unneces-

OLDEST IN THE WORLD HAILED as the oldest of its kind in the world, Elche will host its 48th annual half marathon next month. On March 15, thousands of runners are expected to descend on the city, home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The concept of running 21km and 97 metres came about in 1964, with the idea of doing the race in two stages, and has become one of the biggest events in Elche’s calendar. Media Elche, which organises
the event with the support of Elche Council, claims: “This was an era when few people were running and, in the end, the two stages did not crystallise. But one did run, in 1968 for the first time and over a rare distance for the time: 21km and 97 metres. “This distance was not recognised until years later, but in Elche we have already done it 47 times, nobody has more!” Volunteers are absolutely essential for the smooth running of the event, and the organisers are keen to recruit more.
“It is clear that a half marathon without runners or participants makes no sense. In the same way we cannot organise the half marathon without efficient and enthusiastic volunteers. “They are the essential human element to create a magical atmosphere and give vitality to the event. “The only requirement to volunteer is to want to collaborate and contribute to make the event remarkable, helping and supporting the participants who run the Half Marathon of Elche.”

Murder investigation
THE Guardia Civil intercepted three boats on Monday, with a total of 38 immigrants on board, including four minors, in Cartagena. The first of the boats was located in the early hours, in the area of El Gorguel. On board the boat was 10 immigrants, four of them minors. At around 11.15am, officers intercepted a second vessel, 16 miles south of Cabo de Palos, with 16 immigrants, 15 of them men and one woman. A third boat with 12 people on board, was spotted at around 5.45pm by the patrol boat of the Customs Surveillance Service, which transferred them to the Salvamar Mimosa Salvage and Maritime Safety vessel. En route to the port, the patrol was told there could be a fourth boat in the vicinity, so it went to look for it. Sources state It is foreseeable that more will arrive due to recent improvements in weather conditions.

The judge immediately asked that police go to the hospital to remove the bodies of the minors. Apparently, the woman gave birth in the bathroom of her parents’ house around 5.30pm on Thursday after allegedly keeping the pregnancy secret and locked herself in the bathroom where she gave birth to the babies.

Euro Weekly News is the leading free British newspaper published in Spain, and has SIX regional editions and a circulation of over 580,600 copies every month. Michel Euesden is the CEO and founder of Euro Weekly News, and works hand-in-hand with her husband Steven Euesden who is joint publisher and sales director. Gavin met up with Michel in Mijas Pueblo and said that the general feeling he got from the local British, as quoted by a local bar owner, was that “Nothing is different, but everything has changed.” Michel agreed that she had a similar feeling, as we are yet to see what Brexit really holds for us. Euro Weekly readers are mostly ‘remainers.’ People who are proud to be British, but happen to have chosen to

that having spoken to local estate agents, there appears to have been a recent decline in British buyers. This is most likely due to people not knowing what the future would hold. Euro Weekly News has also spoken to other channels, and one of them will be doing a post-Brexit documentary which will follow the Euesdens, as well as some of their clients along the coasts of Spain. This documentary will be all about ‘Life as an Expat after Brexit.’ They will be following up to see what changes have been made or felt one, six and 12 months after the initial Brexit date of January 31, 2020. Only time will tell what Brexit truly holds for the British, but as Michel said, Boris stated that this would be “The best for Britain.” Only she would have rather he had said that this change will be “The best for the British people.”

Golf Society TOTALLY DANCE: Five-hundred dancers from Benijofar competed in Aguilas.
Gotta dance AGUILAS, Murcia, was this weekend, the setting for ‘Vive Tu Sueño’ a regional dance qualifier that welcomed over 500 dancers in a bid to gain a place in the national grand final. Dancing Stars Events hosted the annual competition at Aguilas’ A u d i t o r i u m w h e re m a n y s t y l e s were on offer including flamenco, ballet and even contemporary dance. The Benijofar-based, Totally Dance, dance studio brought around 70 dancers and their supportive families who all travelled down to take part in their very first competition. They blew the
audience away with their performances and two of their three groups were so highly marked that they won a place in the forthcoming national finals. Setting the standard, the group are ready to get stuck back into hard work as the teams prepare for their next big challenge in Avila, near Madrid, when they will take part in the national final at the end of March. Fundraising efforts will continue to help cover the cost of entry fees, dazzling outfits and travel. IMANYO GOLF SOCIETY started in October 2014 and has now reached membership of 100 members. Each year the Society has raised money for various charities and in 2019 decided to support the following three, Daya Nueva Village School, SATS Animal Rescue and AECC Cancer Care. The money was raised with various events, raffles, football cards and extremely kind donations enabling them to raise a fantastic €1,270. The funds were split between the Village School and SATS, who received €400 each and €470 went to AECC Cancer Care. The money raised for AECC was all done on the golf day that was sponsored by Plane Parking, the money was raised with balls in the water, football cards and a raffle where all the prizes
were donated. During the announcement of how much had been raised Managing Director of Plane Parking, Nick Baker, kindly
said that he would make the money up to €1,000 as without the AECC his wife, Marianne, might not have been so lucky.

WORLD CANCER DAY was celebrated across the region this week, under the banner ‘I am and I am going to’ and the message ‘Early Detection is the Key.’ Torrevieja Council marked the day, Tuesday, February 4, with an informative table organised by the Afe Cancer Association, in the Plaza de la Constitucion, with the support of councillors and representatives of Torrevieja’s Hospital Quiron Salud. Mayor, Eduardo Dolon, read out a statement in which he highlighted that World Cancer Day “must serve us all to raise aware-
ness and reflect on the role that we must assume as a society in general in the fight against cancer.” He stressed the importance of continuous research and cancer prevention programmes, which allow detection in time for a possible cure, as well as the promotion of a healthy lifestyle and proper treatment. Praising the vital work carried out by doctors, researchers, associations and in particular those people overcoming the disease, Dolon added: “Having the best health system is the best advantage in this case. The
greater our knowledge and awareness, the better our prevention techniques will be.” The Pink Ladies and Panthers set up shop in the main square at Zenia Boulevard from midday to 4pm, handing out cactus plants to mark the day for a small donation. The plants were donated by the management of the shopping centre. As the message to the public is ‘early detection saves lives,’ the Pink Ladies were making appointments for any member of the public that wished to book a cancer screening test.
ROYAL NAVY SOCIAL EVENT: Indicating the resilience of the members. ROYAL NAVAL ASSOCIATION (RNA) Torrevieja Branch recently held its first Social Muster of the Year. They had a fantastic evening with 40 members and guests making their way to Restaurante Rendezvous in Torrevieja for a fabulous Menu del Dia. This is indicative of the resilience of the members, their partners and their service background for them not to miss out on a chance to chat and enjoy some good ‘scran’ (a naval term) in spite of the topsy turvy weather. The members are all friends regardless of which discipline of the Royal Navy they are from such as the ‘Greeny’ the electrician who lights
the way, ‘Dabtoe’ who keep everything shipshape. ‘Clanky’ an engineer who keeps the machinery running and ‘Sun Dodger’ who surface from their submarine to join the throng to name just a few. The consensus of the branch members is that it’s ‘full steam ahead’ to the exhilarating variety of forthcoming social events in the year ahead. BREAK DANCING: Classes to be held at the Palacio de Deportes.
COUNCILLOR for the Youth Council of Torrevieja, Diana Box Alonso, has announced that the registration is open for a break-dancing school. The new initiative has 20 places for young people aged between 14 and 25 years old and is free for those who are holders of the Car net Jove (Youth Card) or by visiting the Youth Information Centre. The breakdance school will have eight theoretical classes run by B Boyers Men’s very own Dyca and Amado. The pair are well-known teachers with more than 20 years of experience in the world of breakdance. Two public performances will be held at the end of the training, whose dates will be announced closer to the time. The training will be held at the Palacio de Deportes on weekends until April 26. The Break Dance is a dance born in New York City in the 1970s. Created by
young people as an alternative to leisure and to escape the violence in the neighbourhoods where it began. Forty years later, the breakdance has evolved so far it has even become an Olympic sport, recognised by the International Olympic Committee, and whose first competition will be in the next Olympics in Paris 2024. TORREVIEJA Council is getting going on upgrading some 400 lights on the N-322 where it goes through the municipality. The works will be carried out on a nearly ninekilometre stretch of the highway going from the Punta Prima urbanisation to the La Mara area, Urban Services Quality councillor Sandra Sanchez explained. The project also covers exit and entrance roads. All the bulbs will be replaced and lights now working will be repaired. The lights will also be cleaned up. Two trucks with lifting baskets will be used to speed up the process and to make it easier. The works are set to take around two months to complete given the difficulties of carrying out these kinds of jobs on a road with such a high density of traffic. Sanchez reported that in order to go ahead with the improvements it had
been necessary to request permission from the Valencian Community government Highway General Management’s Alicante State Highways Demarcation Unit. This had involved having to provide a technical report on the provisional signposting or markers indicating the works from the maintenance company. The purpose, the councillor said, was to ensure the measures are carried out in conditions of maximum safety for both the workers and for road users.

‘No Deal’ Elephant is back by John Smith IN a speech which was widely leaked before he gave it, Boris Johnson made it clear to the European Union that if necessary, he is prepared to walk away from the negotiating table without a deal if he doesn’t get his way. The actual talks don’t start until March, but the Prime Minister is preparing Britain and the EU for a potentially tough battle over the matter of European Union restrictions on Britain in the future. It has been made clear by the THE former European Union President, Donald Tusk has irritated the British government just days after Brexit by saying that an independent Scotland would receive an “enthusiastic” reception if it wanted to rejoin the EU. Whilst accepting that Scotland could not automatically be accepted into the Union, he told Andrew Marr of the BBC that he believed that there might be a case

Whilst not specifically saying that his target is a ‘no deal’ exit at the end of 2020, Mr Johnson is clear that he wants an agreement based either on the Canadian model which does allow free trade but without EU imposed restrictions or the Australian model which is based more on World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules without allowing complete free trade. Some experts suggest that the WTO option could be as damaging to Britain’s economy as a ‘no deal’ option although at the moment the Prime Minister says that Britain will prosper regardless.

The Villamartin Plaza is known for the huge charity days raising thousands and we have high hopes for this day to build it into an annual festival THE charities benefiting from this amazing day will be the San Jose
Obrero Orphanage in Orihuela who are still in need due to the floods
in September. APANEE To r r e v i e j a , a l o c a l school for children with disabilities and learning difficulties. They are in desperate need due to a massive lack of funding from the local government. This local school is open to all nationalities. The Franciscan Men’s Shelter in Gandia for terminally ill and homeless men, as they also receive ZERO funding. The last is Little Pod’s Association animal shelter who are still reeling from the Gota Fria.
All of these charities have been vetted and apart from the cost of the day, 100 per cent of the funds will go to help them. There are two cash raffles running with first place on each €1,000 . GUARDIA CIVIL cuffed four members of the same family in Cabo de Palos for passing themselves off as members of an association for the deaf as a ploy for robbing people on the street. The Guardia reported that the clan members feigned being hearing impaired and used the excuse of asking for support for a fictitious association to approach members of the public, taking advantage of people being distracted to relieve them of their valuables. The gang specialisd in the so-called ‘hugger mugger’ technique. Their victims, usually the elderly and foreigners, would be focused on a form the thieves had asked them to sign. When the robbers embraced them supposedly in gratitude, they were in fact trying to pocket items like jewellery, watches and cash. The Guardia Civil launched a hunt for the

four people matching the descriptions of the supposed charity fundraisers given by witnesses. When officers identified them it turned out they had police records for theft. The Guardia linked one
woman among the four to several ‘hugger mugger’ robberies in Castellon. The other three, one of them a minor, face charges for fraud, theft and belonging to a criminal organisation. An inspection of their vehicle meanwhile led to the discovery of numerous leaflets for the false organisation. According to the Guardia, the criminal gang is made up of members of the same Romanian

family, based in Elche, but travelling around the country. The Guardia issued a reminder to the most vulnerable groups of the community to be on the alert for crooks of this kind, acting on their own or in a group, who come up to them to try and dupe them into handing over donations for non-existent associations and to mug them. They warn against going out alone carrying or wearing items of value in clear sight, pointing out these encounters are usually brief, the criminals aiming to take their victims by surprise and create confusion to steal from them.

IN an attempt to avoid overflow and stop the dumping of rubbish next to council bins, the Alicante City Council and UTE Alicante are placing an extra six industrial containers at selected collection points during the day. Councillor for Cleanliness, Manuel Villar, said that “with this and other measures we will respond to the calls of residents to keep the city clean.”

Helping homeless DURING the past week, the Mobile Emergency and Social Assistance S e r v i c e o f M u rc i a ( S E M A S ) , h a s come to the aid of homeless people due to low temperatures. The people in need of help were of various nationalities, seven being from Spain, two from Bulgaria, and others from Holland, Romania and Hungary. In addition to giving them information and guidance with regard to social resources, they were also given hot food and drinks, and a sleeping bag. The areas that were covered were El

CHARGES: The husband was arrested in a suspected case of gender-based violence.
Double Assault MURCIA Local Police arrested a 39-year-old man for assaulting his wife and his nine-yearold child at their home in the Alquerias district. In a post on the Local Police’s Twitter feed said officers acting in collaboration with the EPAF Family Protection and Attention team detained the husband for
a suspected crime of gender-based violence. According to reports the Local Police went to the family home at around 10pm and found a woman with her face covered in blood, seemingly from an injury to her nose. She reportedly told the officers that her husband had given the son a telling off over homework and hit the
child with a plastic stick. Then when she tried to intervene to stop the husband from attacking the nine-year-old he punched her in the face. A health team took the woman and child to a hospital for treatment. The detainee, a Moroccan citizen, was arrested and taken to the police station.

Rubén Alfaro has assured that “It is still a priority task of the local government, that in collaboration with the rest of public administrations we work for the eradication of this scourge. We
participate through the State Pact against Gender Violence to receive subsidies and grants through the Ministry of Interior.” Alfaro wanted to highlight three aspects, such as “the more than 1,200 students who have gone through the prevention talks that have been made in the classrooms of Secondary, Bachelor
and FP. Second, the trust by the police in the assignment of monitoring, protection and assessment of women victims of gender violence by our Viogen Unit, and finally, the inclusion of quality control and evaluation system of our gender violence unit, with a series of surveys aimed at teachers in schools.”

Leading the way ALICANTE Hospital is leading the way in detecting colorectal cancer - which affects both sexes and ranks third after lung and breast cancer. The hospital is coordinating a quality audit of colonscopies performed in 14 Spanish health centres to some 15,000 patients to help locate premalignant lesions early. This is the first national study of this size within this particular sector. Colorectal cancer develops in the large intestine from a lesion which can become cancerous after 10 or 15 years. This is why it is so important to detect them early as many people do not show any symptoms. As such, with assistance from the Carlos III Institute Health Research Fund, the General Hospital of Alicante led a multi-centre study focusing on analysing colonoscopies performed on people aged 40 to 80, nationwide. This includes patients who
underwent preventative screening, patients who showed symptoms of colorectal cancer and those undergoing follow-ups after an intervention. The research findings have been published in the prestigious medical journal Gastroenterology and Hepatology Clinic, one of the most important in the specialty. Head of the hospital’s Digestive Service, Dr Rodrigo Jover, said: “The main indicator of quality of a colorectal cancer screening programme is its ability to identify tumours in the early stage. “The results reflect that the quality of colonoscopy and endoscopists in our country is good, with virtually all indicators above the cut-off points established by scientific societies. Only the quality of colon cleansing has remained four percentage points below the recommended (86.6 per cent obtained versus 90 per cent recommended).

Difficult decision WITH changes to the structure of the Anglican Chaplaincy, St Peter and St Paul, Torrevieja there comes a personal message from Bishop David Hamid, Diocese in Europe. “As the Church of England Bishop responsible for our work in Spain, I have been consulting with the Chaplain and Churchwardens of the Chaplaincy of Saints Peter and Paul, Torrevieja about the future shape of ministry in this significant parish. The pastoral area, which includes seven centres of worship, is served by one full-time priest, Fr Richard Seabrook, who is assisted by some retired clergy and one lay minister. The sustainability of the present pattern of seven worship centres has been under review for some time now. After a full discussion, and with prayerful deliberation, the Church Council has decided that the time has come for a difficult de-

It was decided that, effective from January 26, the Church of England will no longer provide worship services in four centres in the Chaplaincy, Cristo Resucitado, La Manga, San Fulgencio and Campoverde. The members of the Chaplaincy Council voted overwhelmingly in favour of this decision, albeit with considerable sadness. The Council affirmed in its decision that members who, up to this point, have been associated primarily with one of these centres will continue on the electoral roll of the parish if they were so inscribed and that they will be most welcome to integrate
into one of the remaining centres where worship continues: Lago Jardín, La Siesta and Los Balcones. I will be meeting with the (Roman Catholic) Bishop of Orihuela-Alicante to inform him of this decision so that his own priests are aware of these changes. Bishop Jesús has been a faithful friend of the Chaplaincy, providing warm ecumenical hospitality, for which we continue to be very grateful. The Church of England Chaplaincy receives no external funding whatsoever and is wholly reliant on the faithful giving of its members. The Churchwardens and members of the Council are grateful for the support of all members of the Chaplaincy, and particularly for the dedicated work of so many whose work, stewardship and commitment sustain the life of the Church in the Chaplaincy. NEW AREA FOR GROWTH: Combining its industrial activity with leisure.
Commercial area WHILE the Polígono de Carrús and Elche Parque Empresarial are going to enrol in the Ivace aid to improve some of its streets, signs, green areas and parking lots, there are other areas currently in transformation but also still in use. This is the case of Elche’s Altabix estate, which has been combining its industrial activity with leisure for many years, having been one of the popular areas for nightclubs. However, the Consistory has other plans for it as they will convert it into a commercial and service area. In fact, the Altabix area has traditionally been, at least in recent times, better known for leisure and party than industrial activity, which made sense decades ago
when the city had not developed urbanistically and was an isolated section of the town. In the middle of 2020, it will be surrounded by important endowments such as the Sports City and within an expanding neighbourhood. In fact, a Lidl has recently been opened, the largest of the two in the town, with a petrol station next door. Although these are the most recent openings, a Mercadona is to be built at the end of the street, where Viper Rent a Car was, which is finishing its new headquarters opposite. In short, the idea is that the industrial plots which have remained within the urban area will be used for tertiary use to generate this evolution in the service area.

The deputy of Social Welfare and Equality, Mari Carmen Jover, highlighted the work and willingness of the provincial institution to “promote the social integration of the most disadvantaged groups, cooperating with all
organisations that work to eradicate the social exclusion of certain sectors of the population.” There is the programme, endowed with €685,000, for the acquisition of inventory, equipment for centres and other spaces for social use. In addition, those interested may also apply for aid for the development of programmes in favour of social inclusion, aimed at the maintenance of stable services, the total amount of which is €570,000.

LARGEST CANTILEVER POOL: €18 million invested in this property.
Radical design THE Odiseo leisure centre that the Orenes Group is building in the city of Murcia will have the largest cantilever pool in Europe and the second largest in the world, only surpassed by a similar facility in Singapore. At 42 metres this installation will become a benchmark. It was the architect who designed the project, Manuel Clavel, who was the first to dive in the water. Odiseo has a ‘radical’ design and attracts attention from a distance since it reaches a height of 30 metres. Work is almost finished and the forecast is that the new leisure centre will open its doors in March. Orenes Grupo had planned to invest €18 million in this property, which accommodates a casino which occupies 20 per cent of its area. The centre has four floors plus the terrace, which will be a meeting point for leisure and gastronomy. Two floors will be underground parking, the casino will be installed on the ground floor and the first one will be dedicated to auxiliary spaces with meeting rooms. The total project includes a space of 11,600 square metres in which a terrace of 200 square metres is included.

ROBBER RUNS THE National Police has arrested an individual for allegedly trying to rob a Murcia food store armed with a 21 centimetres long blade. The event took place last week when an individual entered the shop, located in Murcia City, run by people of Chinese nationality. Brandishing the long knife, he threatened the owners of the premises demanding that they give him the money from the box. Moments later, a customer
entered the premises and interrupted the would-be robber, who proceeded to run away. However, he ran into the path of a patrol of officers, all belonging to the Operational Response Group (GOR) of the San Andres District Police Station, who were carrying out crime prevention work. The officers, upon noticing an individual with his face covered, carrying an object and running, gave chase. During the chase, the criminal
threw an object under a vehicle. Moments later he was intercepted by the officers, who recovered the thrown object, which turned out to be the knife used to intimidate his victims. In the search carried out on the detainee a small nail-shaped weapon was also found. The detainee as the alleged perpetrator of a crime of robbery with violence and intimidation in the attempt is a man of Spanish nationality and 47 years old.

POLICE have made 26 arrests in an investigation into a criminal organisation based in Almeria, Alicante and Algeria believed responsible for getting more than 900 illegal North African immigrants into Spain last year. Police said the highly organised network used small boats to transport immigrants from the coast of Oran in Algeria and Tangier in Morocco to the Almeria and Cadiz shores. The gang charged each person between €2,000 and €2,500 to make the crossing, putting the total amount raked in from people smuggling in 2019 at in excess of €1.5 million. The investigations into the organisation’s activities, and on which EUROPOL played a part, concluded with police raids on five properties in Almeria and one in Alicante, leading to the seizure of €20,000 in cash, 17 vehicles, mobile phones and a whole bunch of documentation. Police said the Spanish-based side of the operations had worked in full coordination with the members on the African side of the Mediterranean. Be-

They used high-speed boats with strong motors which could cross the Alboran Sea in three hours, and had several safe mooring points to facilitate the reception of the immigrants. Over time they began exploring the Tangier to Algeciras route in order to bring in Moroccans. The organisation in Spain also had at its disposal a significant fleet of vehicles for transferring immigrants to different parts of Almeria and Alicante, and to other parts of the country, including Murcia, Barcelona, Tarragona and Lerida. The immigrants either had friends or family in these locations, or caught buses to travel on to other parts of the EU. They were expected to pay the smugglers an extra €500 for a road transfer within Spain. Police reported that the gang would simply abandon immigrants which didn’t come up with the additional cash on the motorway, or even hold them in organisation properties until their families stumped up the money. Eighteen of those police detained were in Almeria, six in Alicante and two in Zaragoza.

Community programme THIS week sees the launch of the ‘Community Argos Programme’ in Los Alcazares for another year. The programme which will end on February 21 will see a collaboration between the Health Centre of Los Alcazares, Compulsory Secondary Education Centres: Antonio Menárguez Costa and Las Claras del Mar Menor, and Los Alcazares Town Council, through its Department of Social Policy and Equality. The ‘Argos Programme’ began in the course of 2012/2013 for students of first year of ESO, under the name of ALCOHOL: CONSCIENCE WITH SCIENCE, its main objective being to report the risks of alcohol.

THE Guardia Civil, within the framework of the ‘Kalambre’ operation, has concluded an investigation into an alleged hate crime, committed through social networks, which has resulted in the identification, location, detention and subsequent judicial provision of a resident in a municipality of Murcia. The alleged offences carried out from an address in Águilas has resulted in the seizure of a mobile phone, owned by the now detained. Information Services of the Benemérita de Navarra and Murcia began the operation after detecting a large number of posts in a well-known social network that clearly and directly incited hatred and violence against Muslims and immigrants. Investigators found that there were several hundred posts in which, since 2013, comments of a xenophobic nature were given, some of them of extremely aggressive content in which they were encouraged to exercise violence. these profiles was public, so the comments of incitement to hate, violence and discrimination, published could reach a large number of users. Once all the necessary evidence was obtained, the Guardia Civil located and detained a male, Spanish, 38 years old and resident as the alleged author of a criminal offence contemplated in article 510 of the Criminal Code.

Illegal workers NATIONAL Police in Elda have arrested two men of Pakistani nationality, aged 43 and 52, accused of an alleged crime against workers' rights. The men allegedly had three people working in their hospitality establishment, also of Pakistani nationality, without a contract, without registering in the Social Security and without respecting any rights of those recognised for the workers. The detainees ran a business in which the victims worked tirelessly. They carried out work seven days a week, from morning until dawn. In exchange for their work, they
were allowed to live together with three other people in a room of a home owned by the business owners. As a salary, they received between €100 and €150 a month, although for three months they had not received anything. The victims began to work with the promise of the owners to receive a preemployment contract that could help them to obtain residence, although this promise never materialised. They were instructed that in the event of an inspection they should stop working and behave as mere clients or simply run out the back door.

Job nearly done WORKS on upgrading the water and sewage systems in the area around Orihuela’s Guardia Civil station and Calle Charamita are all but done, Infrastructure councillor Angel Noguera has announced. The councillor explained that old drinking water pipes with lead connections have been replaced and the sewage network has been substituted completely. The council said the water pipes works had been necessary due to numerous cuts to supply and the insufficient capacity of the system, leading to a service which was lacking and causing considerable inconvenience to local residents. In the case of the sewage system, the pipes had deteriorated with age, resulting in blockages and overflows, with the unpleasant consequences for properties. The local authority is confident that the works on both systems will bring benefits for local residents and that the new mate-

against and Ciudadanos abstaining Helene Akerman, CLARO President recalled that CLARO had been arguing the need for a second health centre in Orihuela Costa for years, a need fully supported by associations and those living on the coast. The motion highlights the present
situation with long delays in obtaining a medical appointment, long queues in the Cabo Roig centre, and even examples of patients being sent to neighbouring municipalities because Cabo Roig was unable to attend them. Both political groups previously rejected the idea now being proposed.

IN Spain there are two groups which most people would understand as being ‘the police.’ The National Police (Policía Nacional) who have jurisdiction in the towns and cities and the Guardia Civil outside the towns and cities. The Local Police are employed by town halls; they b a s i c a l l y d e a l w i t h p ro p e r t y found, and enforce local laws. Whilst they have a power of arrest, when exercised they must take the arrested person to the National Police or Guardia Civil a c c o rd i n g t o where the c r i m e t o o k place. National Police and the Guardia Civil deal with all crimes, missing persons etc in their jurisdiction. The National Police also deal with all applications for immigration paperwork, NIEs, EU Citizens Registration and for non EU nationals, Residencia, etc. Throughout Europe the general number for all emergencies is 112. In Spain the operators speak English, French, German and Italian, in addition to Spanish and will liaise with the emergency services when the caller does not speak Spanish. No area code is needed and the number can be called from any phone, including mobiles even those without a
Spanish SIM card or any credit. You can also fax or SMS 112. The 24 hours national emergency numbers for Spanish speakers are: 091 - police, 061 health emergencies 080 - firefighters. By calling 902 102 112, one can give details of certain crimes, including:- burglaries, car theft, theft or loss of documents or belongings. The service is available in English 9am to 9pm seven days a week, and 9am to 3pm in French, German and Italian. Having given details, you must go to the National Police stat i o n which you nominate, within 48 hours to make the report using the infor mation supplied on the telephone. In the case of robbery, where threat or force has been used, victims should call 112 for police attendance, or go to the police station to make a report. Other useful number are - 016, to report instances of gender violence. For problems at sea, the Maritime Rescue Service (Salvamento Seguridad Maritmo) can be contacted on 900 202 202, and the Red Cross (Cruz Rojo) on 902 222 292. WATER AID THE spokesman of the Government Team of Elche, Héctor Díez, announced on Friday that the deadline to request aid for the payment of the water and sewerage will open on February 17 and end on April 3. Díez has indicated that the Governing Board has approved today the bases
that govern the Social Fund of Water 2020 and the new Social Fund of Sewerage 2020. “Until now this social fund was endowed with €250,000, but this year we have increased them to €350,000 and we have created a new social fund with respect to the sewerage rate,” said Díez who
added that “with this new economic amount the Government Team intends to support the payment of the water and sewerage bill to more than 4,200 families. The bases for requesting these grants can be downloaded from the City Council website and can be delivered to the OMACs.

SUPPORT has been shown for councillor Emilio Martínez, the object of homophobic graffiti which appeared on different walls of Monovar (Alicante) last Friday. These insults have continued to appear, both personally, and through manifests. The last of them is that of Podemos Monovar, a group to which the mayor belongs, which rejects the attacks received by the councillor and supported him in a gathering held on Friday night at the gates of the City Hall. Grape thieves caught out THREE young men are under arrest for stealing more than a tonne of grapes from vineyards in the south-west region of Murcia. The Guardia Civil’s rural crime squad launched operation ‘Videiera’ in September to coincide with the start of the grape-picking season as part of a plan to prevent robberies from farms and rural properties. There had been a series of reports from grape growers in the Bajo Guadalentin region that thieves were getting

Investigators carried out an analysis of the robberies, taking into account factors like the dates the grapes were ready for picking, the varieties of the grapes, the location of the properties from where they were taken and the access roads. Patrols carried out surveillance in the most sensitive areas, leading to the
localisation of a semi-hidden vehicle parked up off the beaten track area close to a rural property in Totana. A search of the vehicle revealed that inside there were several plastic bags containing farming tools used to cut fruit, prompting officers to search the farm. There they came across plastic bags just like the ones inside the car crammed full of grapes: in
fact 1,166 kilos altogether. They also arrested a 21-year-old man from Murcia on charges of theft. The extent of the grape haul made the Guardia suspect he was not acting alone however. Further investigations resulted in the detention of two further suspects, one of them underage, and again from Murcia. The Guardia reported the young criminals are believed to have travelled to the Bajo Guadalentin equipped with torches, dark clothing and fruit cutting implements. Once they had decided on which property to target they would park up and then to try and avoid being connected with the thefts walk to the location on foot to collect the grapes. They would shove the booty into bags, return to their vehicle and make off. If they had collected too much to carry they would hide the bags and go back for them on a second trip. The two adults are being dealt with by a court in Totana and the minor by the Murcia Court for Minors. The Guardia said the investigation remains open to determine whether there is a possible connection with other grape thefts in the region. Meanwhile, all the stolen fruit seized by the Guardia has been returned to its rightful owners.

Diesel sales dropping
AT one time, the Spanish govern ment was in favour of the use of diesel fuel and taxes were (and still are at the moment) lower than that of leaded petrol which encouraged the sale of diesel vehi cles. Now however, as worldwide opinion is that diesel is more pol luting than lead free fuel, sales of diesel fuel in Spain have dropped by 0.4 per cent in 2019 for the first time in five years according to the Corporation for Strategic Reserves of Petroleum Products (Cores).

Spanish economy is ok THERE is some good news and bad news for the Spanish economy following a report published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) which shows that it grew by 2 per cent in 2019. The bad news is that government forecasts called for a 2.1 per cent increase but the good news is that the Bank of Spain and the Interna tional Monetary Fund got it spot on and the European Commission ex pected it to be as low as 1.9 per cent. The figures are provisional and

FOLLOWING ongoing losses, UK clothing store French Connection put itself up for sale over a year ago but had no buyers lined up. Having reviewed strategy which will see cost cutting, dis posal of some stores and an in crease in investment on its on line business, it has now announced that it is no longer for sale. It believes that losses to the end of 2019 will be between £1 (€1.15) million and £2 (€2.3) mil lion which compares favourably against 2018 losses of £9.3 (€10.7) million.

This is the M12 which connects Madrid centre with terminal 4 at Barajas airport and although there is in theory a financial obligation (RPA) of €54.37 million, the minister has
confirmed that he intends to make no payment. He believes that there is an outstanding sum of €194.72 million to be ac counted for which negates any need to pay the RPA.

STAYING up-to-date with the latest currency news can help you time your transfers effectively, so find out what you should be looking out for over the next couple of weeks… Latest currency news The GBP/EUR exchange rate soared to a threeyear high last De cember as UK PM Boris Johnson se cured a comfortable majority in the UK General Election. However, the pound didn’t have a great end to the year, with GBP/EUR hitting lows of €1.14 be fore stabilising around €1.17. EUR/GBP, meanwhile, fluctuated between €0.84 and €0.87 while GBP/USD drifted to $1.30.
CURRENCY NEWS: The pound didn’t have a great end to the year. What’s been happening? Sterling’s fall from grace came swiftly after the Conservative’s election victory, as Boris Johnson amended his EU withdrawal bill to legally block any extension to the Brexit transition period past De cember 2020. This effectively leaves Johnson with just 11 months in which to ne gotiate a new trade deal with the
EU or leave the UK to face a nodeal Brexit at the end of the year. This sparked significant concern amongst GBP investors who had hoped the passing of Johnson’s withdrawal bill would help to bring more clarity to Brexit. While the spectre of Brexit con tinues to hang over Sterling, the currency has also been feeling the heat thanks to the rising odds of
the BoE cutting interest rates in the near future. Several BoE policymakers have hinted in recent weeks about a pos sible rate, including Governor Mark Carney who said the bank would re spond ‘promptly’ if economic weak ness persisted. This speculation has been fuelled by a run of underwhelming UK da ta, including a surprise contraction of growth in November and the lowest inflation reading in over threeyears. The euro, meanwhile has been fluctuating in response to mixed domestic data, with manufacturing remaining in contraction territory but inflation edging towards the Eu ropean Central Bank’s (ECB) target. What do you need to look out for? Looking ahead, Brexit develop ments and Bank of England (BoE) interest rate speculation are likely to remain the main catalysts of movement in the pound over the
next four weeks. The UK is all set to leave the EU on January 31 and this will no doubt thrust Brexit back into the spotlight and limit upside in GBP exchange rates. German data will remain one of the biggest causes of euro move ment in the weeks ahead. If fears for the country’s growth outlook grow, the common currency could be pressured lower. As it stands, the outlook for the GBP/EUR exchange rate is neutral negative at the start of 2020. LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT ONE extremely enlightening, and somewhat disquieting fact to emerge from this Coronavirus outbreak, is how incredibly easy it was for the Chinese authorities to shut down 10 cities. This actually involved some 33 million inhabitants. That is almost half of the whole United Kingdom - and the communist hierarchy managed to lock them all down almost overnight. Can you imagine trying to close down half the UK at that speed? It would take a fortnight’s debate in parliament before you could even begin. The Chinese then proceeded to build two new hospitals in a week. The UK could take up to 10 years to even get planning permission! Mind you, that of course is how a dictatorship works; heaven forbid the democratic countries of the world being taken over by despots of this nature. And frankly, that’s

why the Chinese leaders worry me. If they have this sort of hold over so many people and decided to galvanise them onto a war footing, we could have half a billion on the doorstep before you could say Chicken
Chow Mein. Bearing all this in mind, I think that allowing China, with its utterly alien and therefore completely unpredictable society to install a cyber system throughout the whole of the United Kingdom is
utter madness. If their inscrutable leaders don’t take the opportunity to insert some form of ‘bug’ into the Huawei project, I’ll eat my bat soup. Talking of which, have you seen the recent videos on social media showing what these people actually do eat!? Basically they scoff on just about anything. Dogs, cats, monkeys, live mice, living fish, rats, fried excretion and human fetuses - to name but a few. Some of the stuff they serve up in their restaurants makes the ‘I’m A Celebrity’ trials look like a Jamie Oliver gourmet night! Is it any wonder this virus has jumped from animals to humans? If they continue gorging on this type of menu, I should think there are plenty, even more deadly diseases just waiting to cross over. It wouldn’t surprise me if AIDS didn’t originate from somewhere in this inscrutable Far
Eastern direction either. No, I think we should be very wary of the Chinese. Have you ever had an argument with a waiter in a Chinese restaurant? It doesn’t take much for the whole staff to join in and the chef to appear with a meat cleaver. Don’t take my word for it. This is a quote from prophesies of old Mother Shipton in the 15th century. ‘And Christian one fights Christian two. And nations sigh, yet nothing do. And yellow men great power gain, from mighty bear (Russia?) with whom they’ve lain.’ Unquote. I also think the numbers of fatalities that have resulted from this virus are far higher than they are actually divulging. THIS week, I’m writing about the NHS, charities and timewasting 999 phone calls. What’s the connection, I hear you say. Well, bear with me, but if you can’t stomach any further mention of the NHS or charities, go and have a cup of tea or flick ahead to the crossword page... According to press reports, A&E waiting times in UK hospitals are at their worst on record as the NHS is coming under increasingly intense pressure. The grim statistics are likely to add to growing fears that services could really struggle to cope this winter with the annual spike in demand all the more since the coronavirus outbreak has been getting worse. As for charities, according to the think tank, New Philanthropy Capital, they’re becoming more and more numerous in affluent areas of the UK instead of where they’re really needed. The north-south charity deficit is
highlighted by figures showing that, per 1,000 population, the affluent Cotswolds has nine times as many charities as Blackpool England’s most deprived local authority - which has just 0.6. Some things don’t change, though - for the UK emergency services. And that’s the number of bizarre/ hoax 999 calls made to it. How about a woman complaining that she’d been sent three saveloy and chips from the chip shop instead of one? Or a man asking for the time, and another complaining about a packet of biscuits being out of date? The Met has released audio of some of these bizarre calls with a plea for people to use 999 for genuine emergencies only. Chief Supt David Jackson said nuisance calls
were a “huge waste” of resources, adding: “These hoax calls block the number from other members of the public who could be calling 999 in a real emergency, keeping people in danger waiting for longer and putting lives at risk.” The Met’s call handlers identified 22,491 hoax 999 calls in the first 11 months of 2019. In 1937, in just the first week of the 999 service, there were 91 hoax calls! As I said, little change there, then. Little things that bring me joy
BARRY DUKE A WHILE back I wrote a piece entitled ‘Little things that annoy a lot.’ In it I listed several issues that had the effect of sending me into fits of fury. Soon after, a friend said how well the column had resonated with her. But she added, ‘surely there must be many things that bring you joy.’ ‘Certainly,’ I replied and gave as an example my discovery that, of all the food outlets in the Benidorm area, there appears to be only one offering crunchy peanut butter at a reasonable price. Lidl’s Mr Choc brand comes in just under €3.00 for 454 grams. Being a crunchy peanut butter addict this was like striking gold, and I bought four jars just in case the product vanished from its shelves. I then sat down and listed a number of other things that delight me. Topping the list are magnificent sunsets which I never tire of gazing at. Periodically I post pictures of

them on my Facebook page. This pleases my friends no end, but are sometimes used by my enemies to attack me. One in particular, Bob Hutton, a deranged Kent-based evangelist who’s been trolling me for years, responded to my latest post by writing ‘God made the sunset. You must repent of your filth or face Hellfire!’
Sigh! And people wonder why I have been treading the path of godlessness since I was a kid. The rediscovery of recipes for dishes I haven’t cooked in years is something else that brings me joy. Back in the day my favourite was chilli con carne. I’d completely forgotten about this dish until I saw that Carrefour was selling its key ingredient - red
kidney beans - for just over €1 a can. So I rushed home and made a huge pot of the stuff, only to discover that the hubby HATES beans. So now there’s enough in our freezer to feed half of Benidorm. Also on my ‘joy’ list are vintage comedians such as Victor Borge, a Dane who combined comedy routines with music in the mid-20th century. When I found that many
of his performances can be found on YouTube, I let out a whoop of delight. My list also includes songs with clever and meaningful lyrics. A while back I discovered Tom T Hall, an American country singer and lyricist, now aged 83, but it was only this week that I found that he’d lampooned racists in a pre-Trump era song called ‘The Man Who Hated Freckles.’ Using freckled people as a metaphor for folk of colour, he sang: Oh, he hated every freckle that he saw / He said they should be shot down by the law / They oughta send them all back where they’re from / And he said would you let your daughter marry one? / And them freckled folks are running down the neighbourhood we’re in / We wouldn’t have the trouble we have seen if it wasn’t for that Martin Luther Queen. ‘The Man Who Hated Freckles’ should be adopted as an anthem by all who deplore the rise in intolerance unleashed in the UK by Brexit and in the US by its infantile orange President.

Nightmare receptionists MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man WHAT is it with doctor’s receptionists? I remember when I was living in the UK how, on the rare occasion I had to go to the doctor, it was a nightmare. They never wanted to let you have an appointment. They’d ask all sorts of very personal questions in front of the whole waiting room. They’d be generally rude and very possessive over ‘their’ boss. Apparently, I should know when I am going to need help so I can make an appointment two weeks in advance. And trying to make an appointment by ‘phone required constant redial just to be able to get through. So I love the fact that here you can go online and make your appointment yourself and bypass the dreaded receptionist. That was until I had an appointment with a specialist and unfortunately missed it because I was in
hospital at the time. I thought nothing of it. I let the doctor know because Mrs S turned up and told her I couldn’t make it and she said she wanted to see me when I came out of hospital. So we went to make an appointment a few days later and the receptionist said that on my notes the doctor wanted to see me every six months. Therefore I couldn’t have an appointment before even after explaining what had happened. She would have absolutely none of it and finally said if it was an emergency go to A & E. She wouldn’t even ask the doctor if she wanted to see me. So some things never change. I’m still trying, but it’s not easy. Any ideas? I might have mentioned this before but someone has to explain to me why it is OK for a woman to say to another woman that she looks fabulous in her outfit but as a bloke I can’t? Why can’t men compliment women the same as other women do. Where’s the equality? Why can’t I say your hair looks great today, have you had it cut? Is that creepy? But if her female friend says it it’s OK. So ladies if I do see you I’m sorry I have to pretend that I haven’t noticed how lovely you look, but I have really.

BRAVE CHOICE WHY on earth do some people get so worked up about migrants, don’t they realise they are migrants themselves? I was unfortunately witness to a group of lads verbally abusing some ‘Lookie Lookie’ men, it was pretty shameful. It made me embarrassed to be British. Those people rescued in boats are putting their lives at risk because their life is so unbearable that they choose to come here for a better life, just like expats. In some ways, it could be seen as very brave. It’s time to stop using such narrow-minded and racist language on such a sensitive issue, especially when people are risking their lives and dying just for the chance for opportunities that the rest of us take for granted. Being lucky in which part of the world you were born in doesn’t give you the right to demean those less fortunate. Many expats come to Spain and make no effort at all to adapt to the culture and way of life. Whatever their opinion of the migrant situation, they should get off their ignorant high horses and have a bit of humanity. A disappointed Carol Evans

The more you are going to move animals, the more you run the risk that diseases will be spread through these animals. Animal trade is an effective way of introducing, maintaining and spreading animal diseases, as observed with the spread of different strains of foot and mouth disease in Africa and Asia. The real issue is in many of the low-income countries there are new opportunities for money to be made which then includes increased meat demand. If the human race were to change its diet to meat free this situation would fade. Each person who goes vegan saves nearly 200 animals every year from daily suffering and a terrifying death: Filthy factory farms, abattoirs, and meat markets threaten the health of every human being on the planet.

Scared to go home I AM an avid reader of the Euro Weekly News and have been since I moved to Spain. With thoughts on moving back to my home town of London after a few years of unsuccessfully jumping between underpaid jobs, I find myself pretty scared as to what is happening there. While everything should be done to put a stop to these type of offences, it makes me wonder how did a situation that used to be a minority of people involved in drug-related and gang activity become a majority? I fear for my wife and my kids that I must now take them from somewhere we had considered would have been a paradise and our dream back to something that might put their lives in danger. No early release WITH news this weekend of another Islamist terrorist attack in London, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is under attack and being pushed for answers as to why an Islamist terrorist was freed from prison early allowing him to commit a bloody atrocity within days, despite his own pleas to be kept behind bars for longer. When the London Bridge terror attack happened in November Johnson promised he would end automatic early release for terrorists. However, he is again facing anger about the ‘lack of progress’ with the changes leaving the capital open to another attack just months later. Sudesh Amman walked free last week, halfway through a three year and four-month sentence for 13 terror offences. On Sunday he rampaged through Streatham high street, stabbing two before he was shot dead. The Queen’s Speech in December committed to bringing forward legislation to remove the possibility of early release for the most dangerous offenders. However, the Counter-Terrorism Bill that would bring the measures into force has yet to be published and there is no timetable for it to start going through Parliament. Johnson’s recent comments echoed those made after London’s last terror attack when two people were killed by convicted terrorist Usman Khan in December. Khan, 28, had been attending a prisoner rehabilitation event after being released on licence in December 2018. Last month details of The Counter-Terrorism Bill were released. They included forcing dangerous terrorists who receive extended sentences to serve the whole time behind bars and stopping early release from jail for those classed as dangerous.

40th Anniversary of Danish church CONSULAR MATTERS I AM always proud to manage the huge community of expat Danish people in Andalucia and Extremadura. The Danish colony on the Costa del Sol is of approximately 30,000 people who come from a country with a population of 5.5. million. As Consul and lawyer, I am used to attending many cultural, institutional and social events; but for this particular one, I was very proud to attend, together with the Ambassador for Denmark in Spain Mr Jens Kisling, last Saturday January 26, the 40th anniversary of the Danish Church of Málaga West Coast. The Danske Kirke øst for Málaga has been on the Costa Del Sol since the year 1980, and is, obviously, an important part of the Danish community. As Dan-

The Consulate has regular activities such as issuing passports, helping Danish businesses in Spain and net-
working relations with Spanish and Danish businesses; however religion is an important part in the lives of a great number of people, so we are more than happy to support them as much as possible.
As part of the events organised by the Danish Church (Den Danske Kirke øst for Málaga) to celebrate its 40th anniversary, the Ambassador and I were invited to attend a mass followed by a dinner at the fabulous Cuevas de Nerja restaurant. We had a chance to meet and talk with more than 100 attendees who told us about their experiences, concerns and general life in Spain. As part of the celebrations, we were also treated to a flamenco dancing exhibition which the Ambassador and I greatly enjoyed. The Danish Church mass is currently being officiated at the Catholic Church, who has allowed their place of worship to be used by the Danish priest and expats to celebrate their service and also have the use of their facilities. This is a very true indicator of the close relationship that exists between the Danish expats and Spanish society in general.
The Danske Kirke ost for Málaga is not only a place of religious worships, but also strives to promote social, cultural and charitable activities such as organising cinema film forums (Danish and Spanish films). At some point in the past the Church decided to separate their religious activities from the social ones, and a few years ago created the Danish Club of Torre Del Mar (Velez-Málaga). They also host musical events and organise visits to other cities in Andalucia. In addition, they hold a traditional Danish Christmas market, a real home from home experience in Spain. So, in my capacity as Danish Consul, I want to congratulate the Danish Church in its 40th anniversary, I hope they continue their service to the local community and support the close relationship with the Spanish community on the Costa Del Sol.

Burger and chips in less than five minutes - Miso Robotics unveils its robot kitchen assistant RONNIE ROCKS THE TECH ACCORDING to a McKinsey & Company analysis, 73 per cent of the activities food service workers perform have the potential for automation. This might seem like cause for alarm, but Miso Robotics, a startup developing automation products for fast-food and quick-service restaurant kitchens, asserts machines can boost productivity by working with humans as opposed to wholly replacing them. To this end, Miso this morning unveiled the Miso Robot on a Rail (ROAR), which it describes as the
‘next generation’ of ‘costefficient’ robotic assistant solutions for restaurant chains. It’s basically the evolution of Miso’s previous robot, Flippy, albeit affixed to a movable rail as opposed to a groundmounted base. It is claimed that it could be a result of late dinners that force the body’s metabolism to speed up, at a time when it should be winding down for sleep. Several studies have looked at the effects of shift work among nurses and manual workers, as these occupations are at higher risk of prostate and breast cancers. These types of cancers are closely linked to hormonal cues and are often treated with testosterone or oestrogen-
blocking therapies. Hormones are chemical messengers that can make us sleepy, hungry and stressed and are therefore tightly linked to
the body’s rhythms - the internal clock set by the day-night cycle. Researchers found cancer patients were more likely to be late-night
snackers, even after taking into account other health habits and dietary or sleep patterns. Currently, international guidelines on the prevention of cancer don’t mention the potential impact of meal times on cancer, though the World Health Organisation does list shift working.

DRAG QUEEN CONTEST THIS year, the Torrevieja Carnival begins its scheduled events in February, with the proclamation and coronation of the Carnival Queens, and runs until March, with a large number of performances and competitions. Included will be the carnival of murgas (a special style of music and
voice), the Drag Queen contest, children’s painting contest, and a number of spectacular parades. The carnival would not be complete without drag and the 12th Torrevieja Drag Queen Gala will be held on February 8 at 9.30pm and will be hosted by popular performer La Plexy, best known as a figure
head in Gay Pride Madrid. For two and a half hours, audiences at the Torrevieja Auditorium will enjoy a lavish event full of incredible costumes and fun performances before the judges choose the best competitors. Tickets for this show cost just €7 from the Auditorium Box Office.
More music from the movies SPANISH audiences seem to have a penchant for symphony orchestras offering more than simple classical music and the latest trend is for music from the movies. The Royal Film Concert Orchestra (RFCO) is comprised of some 90 classical musicians and a
number of interpreters of film music and is part of the Fundación Excelentia, a not for profit organisation which organises a number of different concerts, mainly featuring classical music. They are currently touring Spain with their Morricone, Williams and Zim-
mer show which features well-known numbers from blockbuster movies such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, Cinema Paradiso and many more. The orchestra will be playing at the Victor Villegas Auditorium in Mur-
cia City on Saturday February 29 at 8pm with tickets costing from €34 to €50. Their next event later in the year will be a selection from the soundtrack of the hugely successful Game of Thrones TV series, much of which was filmed in Spain.

One Sauce, two meals! LIKE a lot of people, every now and then I have the craving for something a bit spicy with big flavours. Spicy and fragrant is the way I like to go, not too hot, not something that will strip the taste buds from the tongue, but something that will gently warm and fill my mouth with interesting flavours. Once made, a curry sauce will last for days and can provide the base for a couple of very different meals. This one is very simple and I got two suppers in a week from it. A chicken biryani and fish curry, made with some brilliant frozen hake fillets. In a frying pan soften some finely chopped onions. Once they start to colour add some garlic and grated ginger. After another minute
add a teaspoon of garam masala and chilli powder. Add a small amount of water to loosen the mixture, then a small carton of tomato passata. Season with salt and pepper and let it thicken and putter away for about 10 mins. Add a tablespoon of plain yoghurt and mix in a cube of butter to finish. The sauce is now ready. I had it with some cubes of chicken breast that I’d marinated in yoghurt and spices then cooked under the grill and added to some basmati rice with a couple of spoons of the sauce. A few days later I gently poached some chunks of defrosted hake and added some blanched green beans. Enjoy!

The gamble was rushed and it failed. Cameron had overlooked our endemic sense of unfounded superiority and optimism. Don’t the voters have every right to change their minds once they have a clear idea of what they are voting for? Many Brexiteers that I speak to do not consider us as Europeans and have never been interested in our neighbours. People who watch the pantomimes of Gilbert and Sullivan can’t name
a single opera of Verdi or Wagner. Fans of rock music have no idea of any continental pop groups that have not topped the charts in the UK. They have never heard of Helmut Kohl, Cezanne, Umberto Eco or Antonio Banderas, although they know FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi. They are more familiar with Budweiser, American football and the Boston Tea Party than mozzarella, the Oktoberfest or the Cortes. This contrasts with

many Europeans’ familiarity with British history and culture. So we are now potentially at the beck and call of Donald Trump. The ‘Special Relationship’ is rather like that between a nononsense father and a teenage son. With Trump at the helm, any trade, political or defence agreement could be torn up if he feels upset about a trivial criticism. And the inviolable creed of all American administrations is
‘America first.’ Fortunately, however, we still have Australia, Canada and, I hope, India and Japan. In the face of any military threat to the UK, we should be able to invoke NATO membership but, since we have abandoned our partners, they may apply penal political and economic measures as a deterrent to other potential leavers. This is not the generation of 1940’s Britain. When six-year-olds in primary school sexually molest little girls and 10-year- olds run about with guns in the streets and take knives into the classroom, we have plenty of other issues to address. Many children leave school innumerate and illiterate and with no social graces, no sense of personal responsibility. I sincerely hope to be proved wrong, but what hope do future generations have of competing with the EU, and going it alone when we can’t even handle our own Brexit?

This is Vauxhall’s first-ever plug-in hybrid and features state-of-the-art plug-in hybrid technology. The car’s powertrain comprises a 200hp, 1.6-litre turbocharged direct injection four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric drive system with two electric motors, all-wheel drive and a 13.2kWh lithium-ion battery. Together, the Euro 6dTEMP-compliant petrol engine and electric motors produce up to 300hp, and offer a combined fuel consumption of 204mpg, emitting just 34g/km CO2. The Grandland achieves 0-60 mph in just 5.9 seconds. The front electric motor is coupled to an electrified eight-speed automatic transmission, while the second motor and differential are integrated into the

In pure electric mode, the car has a range of 35 miles. In hybrid mode, the car automatically selects the most efficient method of propulsion. The Grandland X Hybrid4 comes with a 3.7kW onboard charger, with an optional 7.4kW version also available. The ‘e-Save’ section of the infotainment system allows the driver to determine how much battery energy needs to be reserved to ensure that the vehicle reaches its destination when in a zero-emis-
sions zone. The driver can choose to save six or 12 miles of range, or reserve all of the battery energy. Drivers can access ‘eSave’ via the infotainment system. In addition, regenerative braking captures kinetic energy during deceleration that would otherwise be dissipated as heat. The customer can choose from two recuperation modes that turn the electric motors into generators, allowing electrical energy to be returned to the battery and
stored. To further improve efficiency, the Grandland X Hybrid4 features a regenerative braking system, which can increase the electric range by up to 10 per cent. Continuing Vauxhall’s reputation for class-leading on-board technology, the Grandland features the new Vauxhall Connect
telematics service. This includes Live Navigation as well as the ability to check key vehicle data via an app. Direct connection with roadside assistance provides the driver and passengers with additional peace-ofmind. ROAD TEST by Nick Fletcher HONDA’S coupe-styled compact SUV combines dynamic looks with class-leading interior space and a high level of standard features even on entry level versions. This all-round package gives the HR-V a distinct edge in an SUV sector swamped with accomplished rivals, especially as Honda has over the years built up a formidable reputation for reliability and strong re-sale values. Prices start at €24,518 (£20,690) for an S-trim model with 1.5-litre petrol engine and manual gearbox. Standard kit is very good and includes alloy wheels, climate control, front and rear power windows, cruise control, dusksensing headlights, digital radio, Bluetooth and USB/AUX sockets. My test model was the top-range EX version with
