ALICANTE City firefighters are being exposed to unnecessary risks in the line of duty due to abandonment and neglect, according to union representatives. CCOO has now denounced the city council amid claims there are leaks in all of the cities’ facilities, a lack of heating in certain rooms, broken doors, no replacement light bulbs, damaged plug sockets and the kitchens do not even have minimal utensils. And for a lengthy period, there was no hot water for showers.
A spokesperson said that ‘to understand the seriousness of this deficiency, it must be remembered that the staff work 24-hour continuous shifts doing a job that for hygiene and for safety, we must carry out decontamination actions after each intervention.’ To this lengthy list of problems, the union has added the ‘unfortunate state’ of the fire engines, which it points out directly affects the ‘level of risk to which firefighters of this service are exposed in the exercise of work.’ And they revealed in a statement on Monday they
have been alerting Alicante City Council’s Departments of Infrastructure and Maintenance, Human Resources and the Occupational Risk Prevention Service in the Parks for months. “All this comes to demonstrate the state of abandonment in which the service finds itself,” added the CCOO, while urging the City Council to take urgent measures to tackle the situation. In response, the council issued a statement later the same day ensuring the hot water situation was resolved last Friday.

IN view of Brexit having finally come into action, last Friday January 31, BBC News Europe reporter Gavin Lee spoke to Euro Weekly News’ very own Michel Euesden. Euro Weekly News is the leading free British newspaper published in Spain, and has SIX regional editions and a circulation of over 580,600 copies every month. Michel Euesden is the CEO and founder of Euro Weekly News, and works hand-in-hand with her husband Steven Euesden who is joint publisher and sales director. Gavin met up with Michel in Mijas Pueblo and said that the general feeling he got from the local British, as quoted by a local bar owner, was that “Nothing is different, but everything has changed.” Michel agreed that she had a similar feeling, as we are yet to see what Brexit really holds for us. of uncertainty. Gavin stated that having spoken to local estate agents, there appears to have been a recent decline in British buyers. This is most likely due to people not knowing what the future would hold. Euro Weekly News has also spoken to other channels, and one of them will be doing a postBrexit documentary which will follow the Euesdens, as well as some of their clients along the coasts of Spain. This documentary will be all about ‘Life as an Expat after Brexit.’ They will be following up to see what changes have been made or felt one, six and 12 months after the initial Brexit date of January 31, 2020. Only time will tell what Brexit truly holds for the British, but as Michel said, Boris stated that this would be “The best for Britain.” Only she would have rather he had said that this change will be “The best for the British people.”

FIRST MEETING: The gentleman’s dining group of the Calpe U3A enjoy their first meet of 2020.
Positive start to 2020 THE gentlemen’s dining group of the Calpe U3A met for the first time of 2020 at the Asiatic restaurant, Suvashi, on January 30, for a relaxed evening of good food and gentle banter. This month, with many still absent after the Christmas festivities, the group comprised of just 10 happy souls. Spokesperson, Arthur Croasdell, said: “Volunteers were forthcoming to organise events for later in the year and the evening ended on a positive note.” The gentlemen of the Calpe U3A men’s dining group meet on the last Thursday of the month at a local restaurant on a recommendation from other members.

VITAL SUPPORT THE Costa Blanca community continues to get behind Gandia’s Franciscan Brotherhood’s shelter for homeless men with the local Masonic Lodge making the latest donation of €500. Dino Trubbianelli of I Love Albir was on hand to accept the cheque on behalf of the Franciscan Hospice at Palma de Gandia which provides a home and nursing care for more than 60 homeless men, many of whom suffer from mental and/or physical illness, while some are terminally ill.
Without the refuge, these men would otherwise be on the streets and unlikely to survive without this special care. This wonderful place is a refuge of love and charity and all nationalities and creeds are accepted. The Original Charity Shop and Library in Javea raised cash to upgrade facilities, and every year donates €6,000 to buy hygiene requirements and medicines. They also supply €100 each Saturday to provide a three-course lunch for the residents, kindly prepared by

Motorcycle arsonist CALPE’S Guardia Civil arrested a 49-year-old Spanish man, suspected of setting fire to a motorcycle left in a lockup garage. The fire last week spread to other vehicles in the Avenida Diputacion car park and had begun to reach the roof although the rapid arrival of the Emergency Services prevented it from extending further. Subsequent investigations confirmed the Guardia Civil’s initial suspicions that the fire had been deliberately started and after inspecting hours of CCTV footage, their enquiries led them to the suspect seen at a self-service petrol station minutes before. Here he filled a large container with petrol, later climbing a wall to enter the locked garage where he emptied the petrol over the motorcycle before setting it alight and running away. The Guardia Civil also confirmed the owner’s suspicion that the suspect’s motive was revenge.

BENISSA Town Hall could be forced to raise local taxes in order to balance the accounts for 2020. The last plenary council meeting failed to approve the 2019 Budget, which in turn has been extended annually since 2016. Benissa’s mayor Arturo Poquet attributed the extension to ‘difficulties’ with an €836,253 increase following reclassifying and restructuring municipal staff’s pay and responsibilities. The town hall had also lost €262,000 in IBI rates once the AP7 motorway reverted to the state. “It’s hard to believe your words,” said Reiniciem Benissa’s Fernando Lopez Corsi, Finance councillor until the municipal elections in May 2019. He said the present Partido Popular-CIBE coalition at the town hall had spent the previous three years blocking the municipal Budget when Reiniciem Benissa controlled the town hall. “I don’t doubt your problems in balancing the Budget,” Lopez Corsi added, but offered Reiniciem’s help to ‘ensure’ that Benissa has a Budget.

New bridge for Quisi ravine REGIONAL rail operator FGV is preparing to compulsorily purchase Benissa land for a new viaduct over the Quisi ravine. Line 9 between Benidorm and Denia is undergoing massive modernisation, leading to the closure of the Calpe-Denia section on safety grounds since July 2016. The badly-eroded Quisi viaduct was one of the obstacles that held up work for much longer than FGV originally estimated. Initial plans to build another bridge over the deep ravine met protests from Benissa’s town hall, local residents and railway en-

thusiasts who did not want the iconic metal structure to be overshadowed. The bridge, built 106 years ago, was repaired and rehabilitated, but will be unable to bear the weight of FGV’s new dual diesel-electric trains once these cover Line 9. With this in mind, a new viaduct will be built over the Quisi and the existing bridge turned into a Via Verde pedestrian route. The compulsory purchase notifications have now been put on public display and the owners of the land needed to build the new viaduct have two weeks in which to raise objections.
Classic surprise A COLOURFUL parade of classic cars, including a string of vintage Fiat 600s, brightened up Albir and Alfaz del Pi at the weekend. The procession took residents by surprise, and many were quick to post their appreciation on Facebook. Mal Ritchie posted: “These suddenly appeared in Alfaz. Great to see, noisy and full of fun. Lovely surprise.” While Christine Genglebach added: “Some darling little classics,” and Lorraine Woodley enthused: “Saw them from my bedroom window, fab.” VINTAGE: Residents of Albir and Alfaz were treated to a surprise parade of classic cars at the weekend.
Business workshops to assist women WOMEN’S WEEKEND TOUR workshops arrive in Alicante City this Saturday and Sunday, February 8 and 9. The free, intensive workshops held between 9am and 6.30pm are organised by Impact Hub under Coca Cola’s Gira Mujeres (Women’s Tour) programme, created to assist women wishing to start their own businesses. They are aimed at women aged between 18 and 60 who have a clear idea of their proposed business or have already embarked on a project. One of the workshops’ most significant aspects is the way in which participants are helped to tackle different topics in an active manner, enabling them to acquire the necessary knowledge to implement their projects. All women interested in taking part in the workshops can do so at Glub Centre in 22 Calle Italia in Alicante City, the organisers said. The 50 available places will be allocated in strict order of registration.

Chemical reaction
A HOTEL was evacuated and three people ‘slightly affected’ after a gas leak at a hotel in Rincon de Loix in Benidorm. The first two floors of the building were cleared as a preventative measure after two reactant liquids were accidentally mixed together in a tank, causing a chemical reaction.

Public help crack crime PUBLIC cooperation helped police take 34 suspected thieves off the streets of Alicante City last month. The majority of the offences committed related to the thefts of vehicles, and break-ins at homes and businesses. According to Alicante National Police, ‘a large
number of these arrests have taken place thanks to citizen collaboration, which in this type of crime is essential for the detection of the alleged culprits.’ It was pointed out that, on hearing noise or suspicious activity, the vigilant neighbours ‘did not hesitate to give notice to the police.’
New hotel group SERAWA Hotels is a new group formed by several investors linked to the sector, which officially opens its first establishment in Alicante on February 14. Hotel Serawa Alicante is a four-star venue which has 21 rooms, individually decorated with ‘their own personality’. The building in San Fernando Street built at the beginning of the 20th century, has been completely refurbished.
A source from the Scientific Police Brigade is currently looking into the sudden appearance of ‘markers’ on doors to homes in several buildings in a ‘well-known’ neighbourhood in the city. They apparently consist of silicone or glue threads which if not disturbed, would indicate nobody had entered the property since placed there. It’s not yet known if they are related to criminal activity or if they were placed there by the owners. Officers carrying out the investigation have asked anybody with any information that may be useful, to call 091.
Firefighters equipped with breathing equipment reportedly ‘quickly controlled’ the situation on Friday. Sources confirmed two employees and a guest were slightly affected and taken to a nearby health centre. They added that the most common symptoms in these cases may be nausea, vomiting and dizziness.

City hall divided on Valenciano ONLY one in three Alicante City residents can speak Valenciano, a regional government survey found. Despite this, five councillors from Ciudadanos - in coalition with the Partido Popular at city hall - recently voted with opposition parties to declare Alicante City a ‘predominantly Valenciano-speaking zone.’ The vote came less than five weeks before an Alicante City demonstration on March 7, protesting against the Generalitat’s Multilingualism Law requiring at least 25 per cent of core subjects to be taught in Valenciano at state secondary schools. According to the Generalitat survey, a little over 50 per cent of Alicante City residents understood Valenciano in 1986, although this had increased to 78 per cent by 2011. The survey also found that the number of Alicante City residents using Valenciano had not risen proportionately, as only 33 per cent said they could speak Valenciano although 32 per cent claimed they could read it. Ten per cent of Alicantinos able to speak and read Valenciano admitted that they could not write it. Meanwhile, the five Ciudadanos councillors now face disciplinary proceedings, party sources revealed.

GRANDADS ‘FORCED TO SHARE BED’ THREE British grandads who spent nearly €3,500 on a trip to Benidorm claim their dream holiday was wrecked when they were forced to share a bed in their plush hotel room. According to the Liverpool Echo, the trio paid over €1,000 each for the lads’ break over the Christmas and New Year period, and now they intend to take legal action. Frank Christian, John Hough, both 71, and Bernard Fitzgibbon, 69, had reportedly been promised three single beds during their stay at the luxurious Flash hotel, when booking through Hays Travel. But on arrival, the lifelong pals claim staff knew nothing about the reservation, and could only offer them a double room with two single beds. This meant they had to sleep lengthways to fit into the beds. The pensioners were apparently offered a €1,180 refund between them after complaining to the

NEW ACCESS: Hundreds of lorries will be removed from the centre of Gandia.
Residents’ relief THE port of Gandia opened its new southern access on Saturday February 1, removing hundreds of lorries a day from the city centre. The new road represents a €2.3 million investment by the Port Authority of Valencia, and features two entrance points with barriers and two automated exits. One of these has been designed specifically for
long haul vehicles. Gandia mayor, Diana Morant said: “Today is a historic day. This infrastructure will not only boost the economy of the area, but also allows us to free the Grau neighbourhood from all that heavy traffic it suffered. The port has adapted to the city and citizens and, without a doubt, Gandia wins in quality of life and security.” The President of the Port
of Valencia, Aurelio Martinez, added: “The new southern access is equipped with all the advantages and innovations that will allow, in short, the automatic access of the lorries to the site.” The APV plans to install photovoltaic panels in the upper part of the southern access, which would make Gandia the first Valencian energy-efficient Valencian port.

‘No Deal’ Elephant is back by John Smith IN a speech which was widely leaked before he gave it, Boris Johnson made it clear to the European Union that if necessary, he is prepared to walk away from the negotiating table without a deal if he doesn’t get his way. The actual talks don’t start until March, but the Prime Minister is preparing Britain and the EU for a potentially tough battle over the matter of European Union restrictions on Britain in the future. It has been made clear by the THE former European Union President, Donald Tusk has irritated the British government just days after Brexit by saying that an independent Scotland would receive an “enthusiastic” reception if it wanted to rejoin the EU. Whilst accepting that Scotland could not automatically be accepted into the Union, he told Andrew Marr of the BBC that he believed that there might be a case

Whilst not specifically saying that his target is a ‘no deal’ exit at the end of 2020, Mr Johnson is clear that he wants an agreement based either on the Canadian model which does allow free trade but without EU imposed restrictions or the Australian model which is based more on World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules without allowing complete free trade. Some experts suggest that the WTO option could be as damaging to Britain’s economy as a ‘no deal’ option although at the moment the Prime Minister says that Britain will prosper regardless.

Stimulating arrest A WOMAN who allegedly stole 40 female sex toys from the doorway of a shop in Callosa de Segura is awaiting trial. The Guardia Civil managed to recover half of the erotic items at a massage parlour in the area, while the rest had re-
portedly been sold to the woman’s friends. These were later recovered used. A distribution company had apparently left a number of packages at the front of the store while unloading, and the 40-year-old Spanish woman is believed to have lifted one of them un-
aware of its contents on January 23. The shop owner was able to capture images on his security camera, which were passed to the Guardia Civil. Officers made an arrest the following day and the hunt for the clitoris stimulators began.
Kitchen blazes
SEPARATE BLAZES: Four people ‘slightly injured’ in two kitchen fires. FOUR people suffered smoke inhalation in two separate house fires in Alicante City. Both blazes reportedly started in the kitchen, and on each occasion the residents were ‘slightly injured’ trying to extinguish the flames last Wednesday afternoon (January 30), and were treated at the scene. The fires occurred in Calle Médico Pascual Pérez and at Plaza de Améri-
ca around 7pm. In total 14 firefighters from Alicante and two Local Police patrols attended the incidents, cutting off access to both streets. A fire service source said that carbon dioxide extinguishers were initially used, followed by the traditional water pumps. The exact cause of the fires is not yet known.
Better beaches EL CAMPELLO will invest €245,000 in improving and expanding its beaches infrastructure and services.
Councillor of Beaches and Tourist Infrastructures, Julio Oca, said the bulk of the investment will go to-
wards cleanliness, accessibility and security. The council is also expected to replace signs in the area.

Keeping it clean IN an attempt to avoid overflow and stop the dumping of rubbish next to council bins, the Alicante City Council and UTE Alicante are placing an extra six industrial containers at selected collection points during the day. Councillor for Cleanliness, Manuel Villar, said that "with this and other measures we will respond to the calls of residents to keep the city clean.”

DAY OF MOURNING AN official day of mourning was held by Villajoyosa Council on Saturday following the death of former mayor, Segovia Esquerdo, who died last week aged 73. Armed with chainsaws, five workers destroyed 10,000 grapevines with 100,000 kilos of Aledo grapes as the family were forced to call it a day at their Novelda farm. According to reports,
the sector is at risk of disappearing completely, threatening 13,000 direct jobs, one of the steadfasts of the regional economy and thousands of farms in Vinalopo.

LIFE SAVER: Off-duty police officer stops woman jumping in front of oncoming traffic on the A-31 at Petrer.
Suicide attempt foiled AN off-duty police officer reportedly saved the life of a woman who attempted to throw herself in front of oncoming traffic on the busy A-31 motorway near Petrer shopping centre. The National Police officer, based at Elda-Petrer, apparently saw a woman in her 50’s ‘wandering around’ close to the mo-
torway in the Madrid-Alicante direction. Concerned, he decided to approach the woman to see if she needed help. She apparently told him that she intended to end her life, before trying to jump the motorway barrier. As vehicles were speeding past, the officer managed to prevent the distressed woman from
hurling herself in front of oncoming traffic before attempting to calm her down. Witnesses alerted the Elda-Petrer National Police Commissioner, and officers and an ambulance were despatched. The woman was taken to Elda’s General University Hospital where she was treated in the Psychiatric Unit.

Putting his foot in it TWO suspected robbers were arrested at San Juan University Hospital while one of them received treatment for a foot injury, believed to have been sustained while breaking into a home in Muchamiel. A witness to the alleged crime contacted police with a good description of the pair, having heard ‘loud noises in the courtyard’ of a neighbouring property. According to reports, the witness said he saw a man limping, ‘apparently badly wounded,’ while a
second male went to his aid. Staff at the hospital confirmed one of two men was being treated for a foot injury as a result of a fall. After identifying the suspects, officers searched them and discovered the keys for a high-end car stolen from Malaga, which
was parked in the hospital car park. Inside the vehicle, police reportedly found jewellery worth €10,000, €300 in cash, several tools, a torch and gloves. Police sources confirmed the items ‘came from at least one robbery with force.’
The Guardia Civil is now investigating the relationship between the 36-yearold Spaniard and the 31year-old from Panama. According to police sources, there has been a reduction in the number of thefts in Muchamiel since their arrest on January 21. They are now awaiting trial.

FIRST HAND: Students and teachers from across Europe get a glimpse of the vital work carried out by La Nucia’s Rescue Dogs.
THE incredible work of La Nucia Rescue Dogs was shared with students and teachers during a live demonstration at the training camp last week. Sixty-eight pupils and 16 secondary teachers from the UK, Spain, Norway and Croatia saw first-hand how the canines recover trapped victims from collapsed structures, as part of the Eramus+KA229 project. A dozen instructors/guides and their respective dogs, managed by NGO USAR 13, took part in the demonstration, joined by councillor for La Nucia’s Animal Protection Department, Jessica Gommans. Several students hid in different parts of
the camp, and the dogs were tasked to find them, to show how the animals work in the face of natural disasters. A ‘scenario of collapsed buildings’ such as those found after an earthquake, for example, was also simulated to make the demonstration as real as possible. Eramus+ is a European Union programme that supports education, training and sport for secondary students. This particular project is called ‘Let’s trek on Europe’s tracks,’ and its central focus is hiking and the environment. And as part of their activities in Spain, participating countries chose to visit the camp to see for themselves the work of the rescue dogs.
Not a good version of the game A VIDEO went viral of an Altea father urging his son to hurt another child during a football match. ‘Alevin’ teams of 10 and 11-year-olds from Altea and Denia were playing at the municipal sports complex in Garganes when the incident occurred. “Hit him hard. Don’t break his leg, no,” the adult shouts. “Are you listening? Next time you hit him, so he has something to complain about,” he continues as the Denia player lay on the ground. Altea Town Hall and its Sports councillor Pere Barber later issued a formal statement, censuring the adult’s ‘intolerable’ behaviour. “Both the town hall and this department energetically condemn attitudes like these and condemn them as unacceptable,” began the statement. It then went on to announce that the Sports department and the town hall’s legal advisers were studying how it would deal with the ‘inadmissible’ incident. “Altea Town Hall and the Sports department will always ensure that inside the municipal installations there is respect for users, not permitting at any time humiliating or violent situations like these,” the statement concluded.

Scourge of bullying THE fight against bullying - in particular via social media - continues in Finestrat with special workshops aimed at primary children. The workshops are led by municipal psychologist, Myriam Lloret, who encourages students between nine and 12 years old to analyse the consequences of bullying and provides them with various tools so they know how to act in these situations. Avoiding the ‘law of silence’ is key, and the workshops promote communication so that young people can speak out if they are the victims of harassment or cyberbullying. “It is essential that they reflect and become aware of the damage they can cause when commenting on a photo or sharing images of colleagues in compromised situations, for example.”
Llorca added: “It is important to involve the entire educational community, and especially students themselves because they are the main source of information. They know first-hand where harassment is taking place, who suffers it and who causes it. Therefore, it is essential to make them co-responsible to help their colleagues to manage, among all, this scourge that we have to solve together that is especially difficult to prevent on the Internet.” The workshops, organised by Finestrat Council through the Department of Municipal Psychology, Bullying Prevention and Cyberbullying, are being taught at CEIP Balcó de Finestrat, as well as educational centres in Sella, Orxeta and Relleu.

Who’ s for tennis? YEARS of deterioration had seen the demise of the public tennis facilities in El Campello. But the council has now completed a project to get the courts up to scratch and usable once again, and is now waiting for the go-ahead for a complete remodelling of the sports centre in El Vincle. Councillor for Sports, Cristian Palomares (PP), said “The goal is to shape decent facilities that will be able to host various sports disciplines in the future.” He added that for now, at least, the works carried out have meant the tennis courts have been reopened. El Campello mayor, Juanjo Berenguer, gave the courts the once over last week before opening them up to the public.

One of the many ways we raise money is selling on donated items at rastros and charity shops. “Due to the generosity of local mums, I had many unsold children’s winter coats, all in excellent quality, and I contacted Jody Founder of Grant a Wish who very kindly agreed to purchase the coats and other clothes from us. The money was transferred directly to Sri Lanka to purchase food for the poorest of families.”

The great outdoors TEACHERS and 40 pupils in Villajoyosa swapped the classroom for the great outdoors to get closer to nature last week. Staff and young students from CEIP Gasparot spent the day at Amadorio Reservoir as part of an extracurricular activity organised in conjunction the council’s Department of Environment.
During a guided tour, one of the reservoir technicians explained how the facility was constructed, described the water needs of the community, and talked about the flora, fauna and geology of the environment. The environmental project began in the ‘nature classroom’ using informative panels. Environment councillor, José Carlos Gil, said: “It was
intended to give the students an understanding of the topics studied in class. This environmental day outside the classroom is a great way to get to know our surroundings in a pleasant and practical way.” The excursion is offered to all educational centres in the municipality. What to do in the event of an emergency in Spain Living in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics.
IN Spain there are two groups which most people would understand as being ‘the police.’ The National Police (Policía Nacional) who have jurisdiction in the towns and cities and the Guardia Civil outside the towns and cities. The Local Police are employed by town halls; they basically deal with property found, and enforce local laws. Whilst they have a power of arrest, when exercised they must take the arrested person to the National Police or Guardia Civil according to where the c r i m e t o o k place. National Police and the Guardia Civil deal with all crimes, missing persons etc in their jurisdiction. The National Police also deal with all applications for immigration paperwork, NIEs, EU Citizens Registration and for non EU nationals, Residencia, etc. Throughout Europe the general number for all emergencies is 112. In Spain the operators speak English, French, German and Italian, in addition to Spanish and will liaise with the emergency services when the caller does not speak Spanish. No area code is needed and the number can be called from any phone, including
mobiles even those without a Spanish SIM card or any credit. You can also fax or SMS 112. The 24 hours national emergency numbers for Spanish speakers are: 091 - police, 061 - health emergencies 080 - firefighters. By calling 902 102 112, one can give details of certain crimes, including:burglaries, car theft, theft or loss of documents or belongings. The service is available in English 9am to 9pm seven days a week, and 9am to 3pm in French, German and Italian. Having given details, you must go to the National Police station which you nominate, within 48 hours to make the report using the information supplied on the telephone. In the case of robbery, where threat or force has been used, victims should call 112 for police attendance, or go to the police station to make a report. Other useful number are - 016, to report instances of gender violence. For problems at sea, the Maritime Rescue Service (Salvamento Seguridad Maritmo) can be contacted on 900 202 202, and the Red Cross (Cruz Rojo) on 902 222 292. There is also a Red Cross 24-hour helpline 900 100 333.

Divorce or separation How to reclaim certain costs spent in the purchase, renovation or improvement of a property owned by their husband, wife or habitual partner here in Spain
in the case of divorce or separation. The simple answer is YES. It is not uncommon for this situation to arise when a couple (married or not) make the decision to live in a house that is registered in the name of one of them or their parents. Assuming that they are a recognised couple it is likely that during the period of the marriage or partnership, some improvement works or upgrades to the home will have been undertaken that benefit the property and may have increased its value considerably, and that the cost of this work may have been paid for in whole or in part, by the spouse or partner who does not own the property. Equally, it is not unusual for one of the partners to lend
or otherwise assist financially the partner or spouse to purchase the property, (for example, to be able to purchase without the need for a bank loan or mortgage) but when the property is purchased it may only be registered in the name of one of them. In the case of separation or divorce, according to the Spanish civil code, the ‘nonowner’ who can show that they have invested or paid money for the property that belongs to their partner, either at the time of purchase or acquisition, or when an improvement, or work, has been carried out will have the right to claim reimbursement for this money, in accordance with among others, articles 1358 and 1359, of the Spanish civil code that state:
Article 1358 When, in accordance with this Code, the asset is considered to be held exclusively or in common, regardless of the origin of the funds with which the acquisition is performed, the value paid and charged, respectively, to the community property or to exclusive property must be reimbursed, by refunding its amount updated at the time of the liquidation of the community. TONNES OF SEAGRASS: El Campello is undergoing intensive work in the wake of Storm Gloria. THE cost of cleaning up after Storm Gloria in El Campello currently stands at €109,000 with €50,000 needed to clear the beaches and coves. Intensive work has been carried out at Muchavista Beach and Carrer la Mar, together with the promenades along the coastline. Councillor for Beaches and Services, Julio Oco, explained that collecting discarded marine plants will take a couple of weeks ‘since the collection of cymodocea nodosa is a very laborious process.’ He added: “It is tonnes of seagrasses that are carefully collected by hooks to be transported to trailers with a storage capacity of only one tonne. This is so that the
erosion of our beaches is practically non-existent. “We are already working on the repair and rehabilitation of our walkways and furniture, although these tasks may take a little longer.” In addition, it has been reported that damages to the House of Culture due to leakage of the roof amounts to € 30,000; the collapse of the access to the building of the Social Centre ‘El Barranquet,’ €20,000; fallen trees on public roads €6,000 and €3,000 will be needed to fix the lift at the Municipal Library, which was flooded. The Department of Infrastructure has begun the procedures to request aid from the different administrations to cover these costs.

RAMPS are being added to three Poniente beach accesses. “The Paseo de Tamarindos promenade originally had steps down to the beach,” Beaches councillor Monica Gomez explained. “We have gradually replaced these steps with ramps and now we’re linking the promenade to the existing ramps.” The ultimate aim is to make Benidorm entirely accessible, Benidorm’s mayor Toni Perez said recently as he and Gomez visited the work in progress.

Gas scare soon under control FIREFIGHTERS had to evacuate, as a precautionary measure, two floors of a hotel in the Rincon de Loix. Guests were asked to leave their rooms after two chemical products were accidentally combined, producing gas. Two of the hotel’s maintenance employees and a client in a nearby room who had been slightly affected by the fumes were taken to health centres for a checkup, Emergency Services sources revealed afterwards. Members of the Local Police, the National Police and paramedics also rushed to the hotel and it was decided to evacuate the reception area as well as rooms on the first and second floor. As firefighters with breathing apparatus soon had the situation under control, the hotel rapidly returned to normal and guests were able to return to their rooms.

Republican Military Hospital in Onteniente (Valencia) that was financed by Belgian trade unions and the Socialist International. Tuytens tells the story of these women whose strong political beliefs had already led them in
1934 to help political refugees fleeing to Belgium from Nazi Germany. Convinced that armed conflict was inevitable in the fight against fascism, they travelled to war-torn Spain, remaining there until the fall of the Second Republic in 1939. From Spain they went to Algeria, returning to Belgium and another war during the 1940 occupation, where many died violently or perished in the death camps.
Three million risk savage FGM ALFAZ observes International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation today, Thursday February 6. The town hall’s Cooperation and Volunteers department, in collaboration with the Health and Equality departments as well as the Pangea Office are organising a forum tomorrow, Friday February 7, in the Casa de Cultura from 9.30am until 2pm. Although Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is internationally regarded as a human rights’ violation, there are currently 200 million girls and women who have been subjected to a practice still carried out in 30 countries on
three continents. Each year, three million girls run the risk of being subjected to this savage procedure which is another form of inequality and violence against girls and women. Alfaz is showing its support for International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation with talks drawing the public’s attention to FGM and the plight of those who have suffered it. The forum is directed at those wanting to learn more about FGM, but particularly education and health professionals as well as groups and associations who work with residents of other nationalities.
Strays pickup service ALFAZ Town Hall has engaged Animales y Mascotas SLU to collect strays from local streets. Health and Animal Protection councillor Marisa Cortes explained that a Local Police officer will accompany the firm’s employees when picking up an animal to read its chip.
Should the cat or dog not have a chip, it will be taken to the Animal and Plant Protection Association (SPAP) in Benidorm, with whom Alfaz Town Hall has an agreement. When an animal has a chip, its owners will be able to pick up their pet at the Local Police station. Where owners cannot
be identified, the animal will be transferred to the Benidorm animal shelter. “That is why it is so important for pets to be chipped,” Cortes said. She also reminded owners that dogs, whether or not they belong to a dangerous breed, should be registered on the Municipal Animal Census.

LAST WEEK Alfaz hosted the first national T10 Cricket League, with the home team topping the rankings. Alfaz’s mayor Vicente Arques, accompanied by Sports councillor Oscar Perez, visited the ground before the final matches, congratulating the Sporting Alfaz Cricket Club for organising the series of
matches with teams from Pinatar, La Manga and Madrid. These went ahead although the first day’s matches were suspended, owing to the virulence of Storm Gloria. All the matches were streamed live on YouTube with crews from Latvia and Germany who remained in Alfaz throughout the series.
Going for sixth Blue Flag DESIGNATING 2020 as Sierra Helada National Park Year, Alfaz’s mayor said the town wanted a sixth Blue Flag. The flags are only given to beaches and marine installations complying with the European Foundation for Environmental Education (FEEA) exacting standards and Alfaz already has five. These correspond to the Raco de l’Albir beach, the Albir Lighthouse path, the Albir Lighthouse Interpretation Centre, the Centre for Environmental Education (CEA) in the old Coastguards post and the Los Carrascos Environmental and Scenic Interpretation Centre (CIPM). Launching Sierra Helada National Park Year, Mayor Vicente Arques revealed that the town hall now hopes another Blue

Cutting down on paperwork ALFAZ’S last plenary council meeting voted to create an Environmental and Territorial Assessment Committee. Municipal planning officials will speed up processing the detailed paperwork linked to these planning issues, explained the town hall’s spokesman Toni Such. This will no longer need to be passed on to the regional government, but can be processed at the town hall, saving time on unnecessary formalities, he said.
Questions and answers THE Training, Equality and Youth departments’ survey results will be revealed this evening, Thursday February 6, at 6pm in the Escoles Velles centre. Alfaz Town Hall carried out the study to learn the opinions and habits of the local population as well as their preferences regarding the municipality’s training opportunities. The survey also set out to identify elements that the local population believed were hindering or encouraging their educational or professional development,
explained Carlos Mora from the Institute of Applied Social Investigation. Between October 29 and December 5 last year, 581 residents were asked to complete a questionnaire, stating what they liked best about Alfaz, what projects they would like to be carried out in future and how did they learn what was happening in Alfaz. They were also asked how they preferred to learn and the fields in which they would like to train.

Help for Sahrawis ALTEA’S mayor Jaume Llinares held a working meeting with the new Sahrawi delegate to Alicante, Lehhbih Alisalem. The town hall’s agreement with the Red Cross helps to cover the shortfall but the Valencia region’s Legal Advisory Committee announced in January 2019 that only the Generalitat may organise, administrate and manage the public Health system. This includes providing ambulances, the Committee ruled. The Local Administration
Directorate-General also informed the town hall that only the region’s Health department, and not Calpe Town Hall, was competent to pay for a basic life support ambulance to complement the official service. Nevertheless, the town hall has continued paying the Red Cross to provide an ambulance to ensure that Calpe has an adequate service, although
mayor Ana Sala warned that even this was insufficient. “The town hall is not prepared to resign itself to the administration’s inaction,” Sala said. “Residents cannot be left without a service like an ambulance because of competency issues,” she declared.
New office in Old Town CALPE now has a council office in the Old Town. This is located in Calle Cervante, 24, although the entrance is in Plaza del Mosquit. It opens to the public each Wednesday, except fiesta days and national holidays, between 5pm and 7pm throughout February, March and April. “This new office will bring us closer to the people who live in the Old Town so that we can hear about their requests and needs in an approachable and direct manner,” explained Pilar Cabrera, councillor for Revitalising the Old Town. “We are aware that most of the people living in this part of Calpe are elderly and could have problems getting to the town hall,” she said. Only here for the beer THE Oktoberfest that was celebrated for 32 years in Calpe has decamped to La Nucia. It will now be held between October 1-October 12 in the car park at the Camilo Cano sports stadium, attended by approximately 32,000 people who will drink around 18,000 litres of beer. “We are looking forward to organising this great fiesta in La Nucia,” said Gabriele Schafer, president of the Asociacion Creativ Club Calpe. “We are going to work with the bus companies to connect municipalities like Benidorm to the Oktoberfest,” Schafer also announced. The change of venue did not come as a surprise in Calpe, and Mayor Ana Sala said last December that news of the decision to relocate “was not the end of the world.” The decision was also unilateral, she revealed,
even though the town hall had always given the organisers every facility. Despite being a disappointment, Sala also revealed at the end of last year that Calpe would still

have an Oktoberfest, but with other organisers. “We have an important Belgian community here and their beer is very good,” the mayor pointed out.

Storms left their mark on Jucar THE Teulada-Moraira Fishing Club recently fished Section FI of the River Jucar. Earlier in the week they had checked with the bailiff and were advised that the river was “just about fishable” but the club’s original schedule to fish Section F2 had to be revised. The river had flooded badly during the recent storms, rising by an incredible four metres. The receding waters had then deposited a thick layer of mud along the river bank, making access to some sections quite dangerous. As expected, the river was running rapidly with a heavy,
thick colour so members found themselves in quite difficult conditions with fishing limited to the near bank only. The water temperature was 12 degrees, but the air temperature gradually rose to a balmy 19 degrees. A total of 12 fish were caught with only two members returning empty nets, with Graham Sewell heading the leaderboard with four fish weighing 8.5 kilos. Let La Dama take care of your throat LA DAMA was a central feature of Teulada-Moraira’s recent celebrations in honour of San Blas. La Dama in question is a very large sweet bun in the shape of a woman with one arm above her head and another on her hip, made to an ancient local recipe handed down from generation to generation. Historians believe that La Dama, which is exclusive to Teulada-Moraira, is pagan in origin, a tribute to motherhood, nature and agriculture. The tradition was incorporated centuries ago into the festivities in honour of San Blas - Saint Blaise in English - said to protect against illnesses of the throat. Thanks to the saint, eating a Dama that has been blessed at the parish church supposedly provides a year’s protection again sore throats. This year La Dama was also the protagonist of a children’s workshop in the marquee in the Plaza de La Constitucion where they learnt how to make their own versions, which were then baked at a nearby bakery.
TVs should be back to normal PROBLEMS with television reception in some parts of central Teulada have been solved, the town hall announced. All of the residents who complained about bad reception following Storm Gloria are now able to watch television normally, a spokesman announced. Responding to enquiries from the town hall, Telefonica found the transmitter that was causing the problem belonged to the Ministry of
the Interior, which temporarily shut down the antenna while the fault was repaired. Viewers inside Teulada were warned earlier this week that minor but temporary interference was possible while tests were being carried out that could affect the signal. “We would ask anybody still experiencing problems with their television to contact a technician, as this will be due to their own aerial,” the town hall said.

Storm Gloria’s cleaning bill JAVEA Town Hall calculated that cleaning up and repairing municipal property in the aftermath of Storm Gloria has cost €440,000. Damage to the town’s promenades and public roads required an outlay of €235,000, revealed Javea’s mayor Jose Chulvi. The Paseo David Ferrer on the Arenal beach, which was the worst-affected of the town’s seafront promenades, needs €145,000 to return it

The Cabo de San Antonio marine reserve was one topic covered, including the restrictions on visits to the Cova Tallada during the high season and marking out protected maritime zones. Belonging to the Montgo national park and the Sant
Antoni marine reserve, the sea cave is located in Javea but reached via a path that originates in Les Rotes in Denia. Overcrowding in recent years has taken its toll on the cave, prompting the Montgo natural park’s board of governors and the regional government’s Environment department to agree that radical measures were needed. Last summer, visits to the cave were limited to 71 people at any one time, with a daily total not exceeding 355 to prevent further deterioration. Issues relating to the Montgo park were also discussed, as well as procedures for maintaining the local cliffs that are currently being drawn up by the Generalitat. Also under review were the regional government’s plans for regenerating Granadella and restoring habitats there following the forest fire that devastated 812 hectares of local land in 2016.

Javea NEWS A women’s race for Women’s Day LLEBEIG ATHLETICS CLUB is once again organising the Cursa de la Dona fundraising race. The 12th edition of a run that traditionally combines sport and charity will be held on March 8, coinciding with International Women’s Day. Participants - who can run or walk because the Cursa is not a competition but meant to be enjoyed - will set out from the Graull athletics track at 10am. This year the Cursa is raising funds for the Marina Alta Association for the Disabled (Adima) and Carena, a non-government organisation that provides psychological support for people with cancer. Javea Town Hall’s Equality councillor Montse Villaverde announced that for the first time there will be a Dorsal 0 competition number for those who cannot take part in the run but wish to contribute. Madelane Powell, president of the Llebeig Athletics Club, encouraged local women to use up all the 1,000 competition numbers and give visibility to the unity that exists between Javea’s women. This year’s t-shirts will be green and Powell urged them to turn this year’s run into a ‘sea of green.’ She also asked men to get involved in the event, either by helping with the organisation, reserving a Dorsal 0, or cheering on the participants. JAVEA has cut its electricity bills for street lighting by more than 60 per cent over the last 10 years. In 2018, the municipality had 171 contracts with power companies that cost the town hall €230,533. Last year the Services department signed 15 new contracts, but succeeded in reducing its energy outlay to €212,576 for an overall consumption of 1,556,336Kwh, a reduction equivalent to the amount of electricity used by 32 standard Spanish homes. In contrast, the town hall spent €549,000 on municipal lighting in 2011, 61 per cent more than it is paying now. Services councillor Kika Mata explained that these savings were made thanks to careful scrutiny of town hall contracts, adjusting the capacity of meters and switching to LED lighting. The bad news is that government forecasts called for a 2.1 per cent increase but the good news is that the Bank of Spain and the Interna tional Monetary Fund got it spot on and the European Commission ex pected it to be as low as 1.9 per cent. STAYING up-to-date with the latest currency news can help you time your transfers effectively, so find out what you should be looking out for over the next couple of weeks… Latest currency news The GBP/EUR exchange rate soared to a threeyear high last De cember as UK PM Boris Johnson se cured a comfortable majority in the UK General Election. However, the pound didn’t have a great end to the year, with GBP/EUR hitting lows of €1.14 be fore stabilising around €1.17. EUR/GBP, meanwhile, fluctuated between €0.84 and €0.87 while GBP/USD drifted to $1.30.
CURRENCY NEWS: The pound didn’t have a great end to the year. What’s been happening? Sterling’s fall from grace came swiftly after the Conservative’s election victory, as Boris Johnson amended his EU withdrawal bill to legally block any extension to the Brexit transition period past De cember 2020. This effectively leaves Johnson with just 11 months in which to ne gotiate a new trade deal with the
EU or leave the UK to face a nodeal Brexit at the end of the year. This sparked significant concern amongst GBP investors who had hoped the passing of Johnson’s withdrawal bill would help to bring more clarity to Brexit. While the spectre of Brexit con tinues to hang over Sterling, the currency has also been feeling the heat thanks to the rising odds of
the BoE cutting interest rates in the near future. Several BoE policymakers have hinted in recent weeks about a pos sible rate, including Governor Mark Carney who said the bank would re spond ‘promptly’ if economic weak ness persisted. This speculation has been fuelled by a run of underwhelming UK da ta, including a surprise contraction of growth in November and the lowest inflation reading in over threeyears. The euro, meanwhile has been fluctuating in response to mixed domestic data, with manufacturing remaining in contraction territory but inflation edging towards the Eu ropean Central Bank’s (ECB) target. What do you need to look out for? Looking ahead, Brexit develop ments and Bank of England (BoE) interest rate speculation are likely to remain the main catalysts of movement in the pound over the
next four weeks. The UK is all set to leave the EU on January 31 and this will no doubt thrust Brexit back into the spotlight and limit upside in GBP exchange rates. German data will remain one of the biggest causes of euro move ment in the weeks ahead. If fears for the country’s growth outlook grow, the common currency could be pressured lower. As it stands, the outlook for the GBP/EUR exchange rate is neutral negative at the start of 2020. LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT ONE extremely enlightening, and somewhat disquieting fact to emerge from this Coronavirus outbreak, is how incredibly easy it was for the Chinese authorities to shut down 10 cities. This actually involved some 33 million inhabitants. That is almost half of the whole United Kingdom - and the communist hierarchy managed to lock them all down almost overnight. Can you imagine trying to close down half the UK at that speed? It would take a fortnight’s debate in parliament before you could even begin. The Chinese then proceeded to build two new hospitals in a week. The UK could take up to 10 years to even get planning permission! Mind you, that of course is how a dictatorship works; heaven forbid the democratic countries of the world being taken over by despots of this nature. And frankly, that’s

why the Chinese leaders worry me. If they have this sort of hold over so many people and decided to galvanise them onto a war footing, we could have half a billion on the doorstep before you could say Chicken
Chow Mein. Bearing all this in mind, I think that allowing China, with its utterly alien and therefore completely unpredictable society to install a cyber system throughout the whole of the United Kingdom is
utter madness. If their inscrutable leaders don’t take the opportunity to insert some form of ‘bug’ into the Huawei project, I’ll eat my bat soup. Talking of which, have you seen the recent videos on social media showing what these people actually do eat!? Basically they scoff on just about anything. Dogs, cats, monkeys, live mice, living fish, rats, fried excretion and human fetuses - to name but a few. Some of the stuff they serve up in their restaurants makes the ‘I’m A Celebrity’ trials look like a Jamie Oliver gourmet night! Is it any wonder this virus has jumped from animals to humans? If they continue gorging on this type of menu, I should think there are plenty, even more deadly diseases just waiting to cross over. It wouldn’t surprise me if AIDS didn’t originate from somewhere in this inscrutable Far
Eastern direction either. No, I think we should be very wary of the Chinese. Have you ever had an argument with a waiter in a Chinese restaurant? It doesn’t take much for the whole staff to join in and the chef to appear with a meat cleaver. Don’t take my word for it. This is a quote from prophesies of old Mother Shipton in the 15th century. ‘And Christian one fights Christian two. And nations sigh, yet nothing do. And yellow men great power gain, from mighty bear (Russia?) with whom they’ve lain.’ Unquote. I also think the numbers of fatalities that have resulted from this virus are far higher than they are actually divulging. THIS week, I’m writing about the NHS, charities and timewasting 999 phone calls. What’s the connection, I hear you say. Well, bear with me, but if you can’t stomach any further mention of the NHS or charities, go and have a cup of tea or flick ahead to the crossword page... According to press reports, A&E waiting times in UK hospitals are at their worst on record as the NHS is coming under increasingly intense pressure. The grim statistics are likely to add to growing fears that services could really struggle to cope this winter with the annual spike in demand all the more since the coronavirus outbreak has been getting worse. As for charities, according to the think tank, New Philanthropy Capital, they’re becoming more and more numerous in affluent areas of the UK instead of where they’re really needed. The north-south charity deficit is
highlighted by figures showing that, per 1,000 population, the affluent Cotswolds has nine times as many charities as Blackpool England’s most deprived local authority - which has just 0.6. Some things don’t change, though - for the UK emergency services. And that’s the number of bizarre/ hoax 999 calls made to it. How about a woman complaining that she’d been sent three saveloy and chips from the chip shop instead of one? Or a man asking for the time, and another complaining about a packet of biscuits being out of date? The Met has released audio of some of these bizarre calls with a plea for people to use 999 for genuine emergencies only. Chief Supt David Jackson said nuisance calls
were a “huge waste” of resources, adding: “These hoax calls block the number from other members of the public who could be calling 999 in a real emergency, keeping people in danger waiting for longer and putting lives at risk.” The Met’s call handlers identified 22,491 hoax 999 calls in the first 11 months of 2019. In 1937, in just the first week of the 999 service, there were 91 hoax calls! As I said, little change there, then. Little things that bring me joy
BARRY DUKE A WHILE back I wrote a piece entitled ‘Little things that annoy a lot.’ In it I listed several issues that had the effect of sending me into fits of fury. Soon after, a friend said how well the column had resonated with her. But she added, ‘surely there must be many things that bring you joy.’ ‘Certainly,’ I replied and gave as an example my discovery that, of all the food outlets in the Benidorm area, there appears to be only one offering crunchy peanut butter at a reasonable price. Lidl’s Mr Choc brand comes in just under €3.00 for 454 grams. Being a crunchy peanut butter addict this was like striking gold, and I bought four jars just in case the product vanished from its shelves. I then sat down and listed a number of other things that delight me. Topping the list are magnificent sunsets which I never tire of gazing at. Periodically I post pictures of

them on my Facebook page. This pleases my friends no end, but are sometimes used by my enemies to attack me. One in particular, Bob Hutton, a deranged Kent-based evangelist who’s been trolling me for years, responded to my latest post by writing ‘God made the sunset. You must repent of your filth or face Hellfire!’
Sigh! And people wonder why I have been treading the path of godlessness since I was a kid. The rediscovery of recipes for dishes I haven’t cooked in years is something else that brings me joy. Back in the day my favourite was chilli con carne. I’d completely forgotten about this dish until I saw that Carrefour was selling its key ingredient - red
kidney beans - for just over €1 a can. So I rushed home and made a huge pot of the stuff, only to discover that the hubby HATES beans. So now there’s enough in our freezer to feed half of Benidorm. Also on my ‘joy’ list are vintage comedians such as Victor Borge, a Dane who combined comedy routines with music in the mid-20th century. When I found that many
of his performances can be found on YouTube, I let out a whoop of delight. My list also includes songs with clever and meaningful lyrics. A while back I discovered Tom T Hall, an American country singer and lyricist, now aged 83, but it was only this week that I found that he’d lampooned racists in a pre-Trump era song called ‘The Man Who Hated Freckles.’ Using freckled people as a metaphor for folk of colour, he sang: Oh, he hated every freckle that he saw / He said they should be shot down by the law / They oughta send them all back where they’re from / And he said would you let your daughter marry one? / And them freckled folks are running down the neighbourhood we’re in / We wouldn’t have the trouble we have seen if it wasn’t for that Martin Luther Queen. ‘The Man Who Hated Freckles’ should be adopted as an anthem by all who deplore the rise in intolerance unleashed in the UK by Brexit and in the US by its infantile orange President.

Nightmare receptionists MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man WHAT is it with doctor’s receptionists? I remember when I was living in the UK how, on the rare occasion I had to go to the doctor, it was a nightmare. They never wanted to let you have an appointment. They’d ask all sorts of very personal questions in front of the whole waiting room. They’d be generally rude and very possessive over ‘their’ boss. Apparently, I should know when I am going to need help so I can make an appointment two weeks in advance. And trying to make an appointment by ‘phone required constant redial just to be able to get through. So I love the fact that here you can go online and make your appointment yourself and bypass the dreaded receptionist. That was until I had an appointment with a specialist and unfortunately missed it because I was in
hospital at the time. I thought nothing of it. I let the doctor know because Mrs S turned up and told her I couldn’t make it and she said she wanted to see me when I came out of hospital. So we went to make an appointment a few days later and the receptionist said that on my notes the doctor wanted to see me every six months. Therefore I couldn’t have an appointment before even after explaining what had happened. She would have absolutely none of it and finally said if it was an emergency go to A & E. She wouldn’t even ask the doctor if she wanted to see me. So some things never change. I’m still trying, but it’s not easy. Any ideas? I might have mentioned this before but someone has to explain to me why it is OK for a woman to say to another woman that she looks fabulous in her outfit but as a bloke I can’t? Why can’t men compliment women the same as other women do. Where’s the equality? Why can’t I say your hair looks great today, have you had it cut? Is that creepy? But if her female friend says it it’s OK. So ladies if I do see you I’m sorry I have to pretend that I haven’t noticed how lovely you look, but I have really.

BRAVE CHOICE WHY on earth do some people get so worked up about migrants, don’t they realise they are migrants themselves? I was unfortunately witness to a group of lads verbally abusing some ‘Lookie Lookie’ men, it was pretty shameful. It made me embarrassed to be British. Those people rescued in boats are putting their lives at risk because their life is so unbearable that they choose to come here for a better life, just like expats. In some ways, it could be seen as very brave. It’s time to stop using such narrow-minded and racist language on such a sensitive issue, especially when people are risking their lives and dying just for the chance for opportunities that the rest of us take for granted. Being lucky in which part of the world you were born in doesn’t give you the right to demean those less fortunate. Many expats come to Spain and make no effort at all to adapt to the culture and way of life. Whatever their opinion of the migrant situation, they should get off their ignorant high horses and have a bit of humanity. A disappointed Carol Evans

The more you are going to move animals, the more you run the risk that diseases will be spread through these animals. Animal trade is an effective way of introducing, maintaining and spreading animal diseases, as observed with the spread of different strains of foot and mouth disease in Africa and Asia. The real issue is in many of the low-income countries there are new opportunities for money to be made which then includes increased meat demand. If the human race were to change its diet to meat free this situation would fade. Each person who goes vegan saves nearly 200 animals every year from daily suffering and a terrifying death: Filthy factory farms, abattoirs, and meat markets threaten the health of every human being on the planet.

Scared to go home I AM an avid reader of the Euro Weekly News and have been since I moved to Spain. With thoughts on moving back to my home town of London after a few years of unsuccessfully jumping between underpaid jobs, I find myself pretty scared as to what is happening there. While everything should be done to put a stop to these type of offences, it makes me wonder how did a situation that used to be a minority of people involved in drug-related and gang activity become a majority? I fear for my wife and my kids that I must now take them from somewhere we had considered would have been a paradise and our dream back to something that might put their lives in danger. No early release WITH news this weekend of another Islamist terrorist attack in London, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is under attack and being pushed for answers as to why an Islamist terrorist was freed from prison early allowing him to commit a bloody atrocity within days, despite his own pleas to be kept behind bars for longer. When the London Bridge terror attack happened in November Johnson promised he would end automatic early release for terrorists. However, he is again facing anger about the ‘lack of progress’ with the changes leaving the capital open to another attack just months later. Sudesh Amman walked free last week, halfway through a three year and four-month sentence for 13 terror offences. On Sunday he rampaged through Streatham high street, stabbing two before he was shot dead. The Queen’s Speech in December committed to bringing forward legislation to remove the possibility of early release for the most dangerous offenders. However, the Counter-Terrorism Bill that would bring the measures into force has yet to be published and there is no timetable for it to start going through Parliament. Johnson’s recent comments echoed those made after London’s last terror attack when two people were killed by convicted terrorist Usman Khan in December. Khan, 28, had been attending a prisoner rehabilitation event after being released on licence in December 2018. Last month details of The Counter-Terrorism Bill were released. They included forcing dangerous terrorists who receive extended sentences to serve the whole time behind bars and stopping early release from jail for those classed as dangerous.

Opticians in Calpe and Javea donate 24 pairs of glasses to the Foundation for Health and Community DISADVANTAGED members of the community will receive free prescription glasses thanks to an agreement between Specsavers Ópticas Calpe and Javea and the Foundation for Health and Community (Fundación Salud y Comunidad - FSC). A total of 24 pairs of glasses are being donated by the Specsavers Ópticas stores to improve the vision and quality of life of the users of the foundation’s centres in the Alicante Province. The users of these centres can visit the opticians to have a complete eye test to check their vision and the health of their eyes. If necessary, they can then choose a pair of glasses from the Specsavers’ range, which will be donated to the charity free of charge. The director of the opticians in Calpe
Alba Argudo and Claus Weger from Specsavers Ópticas with Carmen Poveda and Ainhoa Cano from the FSC (Fundación Salud y Comunidad). and Javea, Mike Stone, expressed his pride in being able to donate 24 pairs of glasses, 12 to the centres for Marina Baixa and 12 to the centres for Marina Alta.
He explains: “We are very committed to the cause and want to support vulnerable people in our area. We are very happy to be able to help 24 users of this foundation to improve their vision and have the opportunity to continue with their education and development.” To finalise this long-term agreement there was a meeting in the Calpe store in December, with representatives of both Specsavers Ópticas and the FSC present. Alba Argudo and Claus Weger from Specsavers, were delighted to welcome representatives of FSC; Centre Director Ainhoa Cano, Area Director for the Care of Dependents and Minors Toni Gelida and Carmen Poveda, the Assistant Area Director. Ainhoa Cano and Toni Gelida from the FSC added: “We are very grateful to Specsavers for this collaboration. The inter-
est they have shown in our work and their openness to collaborate with the foundation demonstrates their dedication to helping the vulnerable people that we work with in our centres.” For over 25 years the FSC has been working in the areas of research, prevention, intervention and awareness-raising for health and social problems that affect groups at risk of, or in a situation of, social exclusion. It is a non-profit organisation, committed to helping vulnerable people in society, endorsed and subsidised by public bodies and administrations. Its aim is to improve the quality of life of users and facilitate social integration through the promotion of health and collective welfare. The Foundation manages more than 100 social projects, a third of which are carried out in the Valencian Community.

CHIROPRACTIC CARE: Has an enviable safety record.
Chiropractic Is Safe SOME people are worried about seeing a chiropractor because they think that chiropractic adjustments might be harmful or dangerous. However, the research relating to chiropractic care shows us that it is remarkably safe, it’s effective and it’s associated with high levels of patient satisfaction. Chiropractic care actually has an enviable safety record compared to most other healthcare interventions. There must be some risk? Virtually all forms of healthcare are associated with some risk. With the sort of manual or ‘hands-on’ procedures that chiropractors use in everyday practice, it’s logical that there is at least some risk that on rare occasions some people may suffer from an adverse event after seeing their chiropractor. What does the research say? A number of researchers have reviewed all the published literature relating to the safety of chiropractic care. According to these reviews, serious adverse events are very rare and most of the time the scientists weren’t sure if the chiropractic care actually caused the event or not. Because serious adverse events are so rare following chiropractic care, it’s virtually impossible for researchers to accurately estimate how often they actually occur. So, there are only rough estimates for serious adverse events. And these estimates range from one in 20,000 to one in several million chiropractic visits. Another study has shown that people who have to go to hospital have as high as a one in three chance of suffering from an adverse event. What is more common with chiropractic care is that some people can feel a bit stiff and sore after they’ve been adjusted, but this usually goes away by itself. So, according to the best reviews of all the science literature on this topic, we know that being seriously hurt from seeing your chiropractor is extremely rare. In fact, the statistics tell us that you are about 10 times more likely to be seriously injured driving to and from your chiropractor’s office than you are from being seriously injured while seeing your chiropractor. Rest Assured So, if you or someone you know is worried about seeing a chiropractor, you can rest assured that chiropractic care is associated with very low risk of causing serious harm. The risks are so rare that they cannot accurately be estimated, and of the risk estimates that have been made, most suggest that serious adverse events associated with chiropractic care happen perhaps every several hundred thousand visits. So, despite what some people think, chiropractic has an enviable safety record and you can rest assured that if you go see your chiropractor, you’re in safe hands. 40th Anniversary of Danish church CONSULAR MATTERS I AM always proud to manage the huge community of expat Danish people in Andalucia and Extremadura. The Danish colony on the Costa del Sol is of approximately 30,000 people who come from a country with a population of 5.5. million. As Consul and lawyer, I am used to attending many cultural, institutional and social events; but for this particular one, I was very proud to attend, together with the Ambassador for Denmark in Spain Mr Jens Kisling, last Saturday January 26, the 40th anniversary of the Danish Church of Málaga West Coast. working relations with Spanish and Danish businesses; however religion is an important part in the lives of a great number of people, so we are more than happy to support them as much as possible.
As part of the events organised by the Danish Church (Den Danske Kirke øst for Málaga) to celebrate its 40th anniversary, the Ambassador and I were invited to attend a mass followed by a dinner at the fabulous Cuevas de Nerja restaurant. We had a chance to meet and talk with more than 100 attendees who told us about their experiences, concerns and general life in Spain. As part of the celebrations, we were also treated to a flamenco dancing exhibition which the Ambassador and I greatly enjoyed. The Danish Church mass is currently being officiated at the Catholic Church, who has allowed their place of worship to be used by the Danish priest and expats to celebrate their service and also have the use of their facilities. This is a very true indicator of the close relationship that exists between the Danish expats and Spanish society in general.
The Danske Kirke ost for Málaga is not only a place of religious worships, but also strives to promote social, cultural and charitable activities such as organising cinema film forums (Danish and Spanish films). At some point in the past the Church decided to separate their religious activities from the social ones, and a few years ago created the Danish Club of Torre Del Mar (Velez-Málaga). They also host musical events and organise visits to other cities in Andalucia. In addition, they hold a traditional Danish Christmas market, a real home from home experience in Spain. So, in my capacity as Danish Consul, I want to congratulate the Danish Church in its 40th anniversary, I hope they continue their service to the local community and support the close relationship with the Spanish community on the Costa Del Sol.

LIKE a lot of people, every now and then I have the craving for something a bit spicy with big flavours. Spicy and fragrant is the way I like to go, not too hot, not something that will strip the taste buds from the tongue, but something that will gently warm and fill my mouth with interesting flavours. Once made, a curry sauce will last for days and can provide the base for a couple of very different meals. This one is very simple and I got two suppers in a week from it. A chicken biryani and fish curry, made with some brilliant frozen hake fillets. In a frying pan soften some finely chopped onions. Once they start to colour add some garlic and grated ginger. After another minute
add a teaspoon of garam masala and chilli powder. Add a small amount of water to loosen the mixture, then a small carton of tomato passata. Season with salt and pepper and let it thicken and putter away for about 10 mins. Add a tablespoon of plain yoghurt and mix in a cube of butter to finish. The sauce is now ready. I had it with some cubes of chicken breast that I’d marinated in yoghurt and spices then cooked under the grill and added to some basmati rice with a couple of spoons of the sauce. A few days later I gently poached some chunks of defrosted hake and added some blanched green beans. Enjoy!

Split personality hybrid VAUXHALL is continuing its journey towards electrification with the new Grandland X Hybrid4 all-wheel drive plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. This is Vauxhall’s first-ever plug-in hybrid and features state-of-the-art plug-in hybrid technology. The car’s powertrain comprises a 200hp, 1.6-litre turbocharged direct injection four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric drive system with two electric motors, all-wheel drive and a 13.2kWh lithium-ion battery. Together, the Euro 6d-TEMP-compliant petrol engine and electric motors produce up to 300hp, and offer a combined fuel consumption of 204mpg, emitting just 34g/km CO2. The Grandland achieves 060 mph in just 5.9 seconds. The front electric motor is coupled to an electrified eight-speed automatic transmission, while the second motor and differential are integrated into the electrically-powered rear axle, providing all-wheel traction on demand. Four driving modes are available, electric, hybrid, AWD and Sport. In pure electric mode, the car has a range of 35 miles. In hybrid mode, the car automatically se-
lects the most efficient method of propulsion. When travelling at low speeds, for example, the system switches to electric mode for zero-emission driving. The Grandland X Hybrid4 comes with a 3.7kW on-board charger, with an optional 7.4kW version also available. The ‘e-Save’ section of the infotainment system allows the driver to determine how much battery energy needs to be reserved to ensure that the vehicle reaches its destination when in a zero-emissions zone. The driver can choose to save six or 12 miles of range, or reserve all of the battery energy. Drivers can access ‘e-Save’ via the infotainment system. In addition, regenerative braking captures kinetic energy during deceleration that would otherwise be dissipated as heat. The customer can choose from two recuperation modes that turn the electric motors into generators, allowing electrical energy to be returned to the battery and stored. VAUXHALL’S JOURNEY: State-of-the-art technology.
To further improve efficiency, the Grandland X Hybrid4 features a regenerative braking system, which can increase the electric range by up to 10 per cent. Continuing Vauxhall’s reputation for class-leading on-board technology, the Grandland features the new Vauxhall Connect telematics service. This includes Live Navigation as well as the ability to check key vehicle data via an app. Direct connection w i t h road-
side assistance provides the driver and passengers with additional peace-ofmind. Help can be reached within seconds by pressing the red button on the centre console. If the seatbelt tensioners or the airbags are deployed, the emergency call is activated automatically. PREMIER LEAGUE leaders Liverpool opened up a 22-point gap at the top of the table after second-half goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jordan Henderson and a Mohamed Salah brace gave them a 4-0 win over Southampton at Anfield on Saturday. It was Liverpool’s 20th successive home win in the Premier League dating back to last season, matching Manchester City’s record set between March 2011 and March 2012. It left them on 73 points from 25 games and needing 21 points from their remaining 13 fixtures to be mathematically sure of winning their first league title since 1990. Another clinical performance by Liverpool left second-placed champions City, who visit Tottenham on Sunday, with an almost impossible task to retain their title. CARMEN-ELITE SAILS was the overall winner of Moraira’s notoriously tough 300 Millas A3 race. The yacht, skippered by Jose Coello and crewed by Jesus Ros Ramon and Pablo Garcia Meca from Cartagena’s Real Club de Regatas, completed the route in 39 hours to take the Grefusa Trophy. The race was due to leave Moraira on January 22 but the start was postponed by one day, owing to the weather conditions left by Storm Gloria. The 300-sea mile (555.6 kilometres) regatta course also had to be reduced to 230 sea miles (426 kilometres), taking the boats round the is-

The boats began spreading out before arriving at Isla Grosa by which time the wind was gusting at 22 knots (44.7 kilometres), to the advantage of the larger boats. Once round Isla Grosa, the wind dropped and was occasionally non-existent as the boats made for Tabarca, leaving some with no option but to drop out of the race. Those that remained had a long, hard haul back to Moraira, where the Alicante boat Vicente Garcia’s Plis Play was first in, followed by Ziving Badia and Brujo, both from Valencia’s Club Nautico. Carmen-Elite sails, the sixth to arrive, was the overall winner on corrected time, taking a €3,000 cash prize as well as the Grefusa trophy.
