Under fire

PEDRO SANCHEZ: Flying in a helicopter over Murcia.

PEDRO SÁNCHEZ has come under fire for allegedly flying on a helicopter being used in a search and rescue operation in Mallorca. It is reported that the Guardia Civil’s aircraft named ‘Cuckoo’ had been in the air looking for a 34-year-old man who disappeared during Storm Gloria on Thursday, January 23. The man had been out canyoning in the Torrent de Na Mora two days prior when a powerful force of water caused him to be swept under. The helicopter was fundamental in the search as it was deployed over the waters that surround the area as it was highly suspected that the man

had been dragged out into the sea due to the adverse weather conditions experienced last week. However, the aircraft was allegedly ordered to be taken out of the rescue operation to serve the Prime Minister, flying to meet him in Capdepera. Sanchez then flew to Cala Rajada to meet local authorities before returning to Palma. It is understood that the aircraft was used by Sánchez for over three hours. Since the accusations have been made public, the government has released a statement to strenuously deny that Sánchez hindered the search and rescue operation.

TRAGEDY enveloped the island on Monday, January 27, when a woman jumped to her death from a bridge onto the highway. The fatal incident took place at approximately 7.30am on the Llucmajor highway near the exit for Coll d’en Rabassa. As the woman hit the ground, several cars tried to avoid striking her body, however one vehicle crashed into her and overturned, injuring the two occupants inside. Natural wonders DESPITE Storm Gloria bringing the most severe weather conditions experienced in the h i s t o r y o f M a l l o rc a w h i c h caused incalculable devastation, not all of its affects were negative. Ses Fonts Ufanes, located in Campanet within the Gabellí Petit Estate, thrived as a result of the significant accumulation of rainfall, attracting visitors far and wide. After several days of intense rain during the storm, its aquifer over-

flowed with the water rushing up to the surface through the springs below, presenting one of the most stunning natural wonders to be seen by the human eye. From this point on, the water placidly made its way down to the flatlands of Sa Pobla, travelling wildly through the forest and into trees and rocks, crossing the cultivation fields until it reached S’Albufera. Here, in a landscape defined by reeds and canals, the water then flowed out into the sea.

Boris’ bother A COURT has determined that the squatters who have been residing at the expansive estate situated in Artà that once belonged to Boris Becker have committed a crime of usurpation. The Provincial Court in Manacor has ruled that the four occupants have illegally taken control of the property without having the legal right to do so and have been ordered to leave in addition to receiving a penalty of €480. The estate had been used by the international tennis star until the summer of 2016 when he declared bankruptcy. Since then, the property has been managed by a debt management company who served an eviction notice to the illegal tenants in October last year. The squatters responded and carried out legal proceedings, where they argued that they had not committed a crime because the estate had been abandoned.

The positive effects of the storm also reached the waterfalls encased within the Serra de Tramuntana, a positive indication that the water levels in Mallorca had been restored, where their reserves increased copiously. The Gorg Blau and Cúber reservoirs also benefited from the storm and signalled that the most iconic natural landscapes were set to have a good year.

Positive transformation PALMA’S Palacio de Congresos has forecasted an exceptional year ahead where it is anticipated that they will achieve the best results since it opened in April 2017. Caring for cancer

Happy ending RESIDENTS in Mallorca are triumphant after an elderly man who was evicted from the property that he lived at for more than 50 years will now be assisted by Palma City Council. The eviction led to the Platform of People Affected by Mortgages (PAH) taking on the case, who demanded that there was justice for 78-year-old Ramón FM. It is understood that a petition was also signed by members of the public. The man had been ordered to vacate his home by a Court in DecemFED up with the growing population of wild goats in Cala Llamp, several residents have installed electric fences to protect their land. At least a dozen properties have implemented this new measure due to the animals reportedly causing considerable damage to gardens and crops. One

A TOTAL of €69,500 was raised by the inspiring Calanova Cancer Care Shop in 2019, with the funds being given to a selection of worthy charities. Just before Christmas, a cheque for €3,000 was presented by President Angela McGrath to Jackie Codd, the Founder of Age Concern both of whom were awarded a British Empire for their unswerving dedication and services to Britons living in Mallorca. The shop also participated in inspiring projects, including all of their unsold summer clothes being donated to communities affected by the hurricanes in Cuba, delivered personally by Palmanova Doctor Angel Avila Camejo. The Spanish Cancer Care Association (AECC) also donated t-shirts adorning their logo to the Cuban Cancer Association which were handed to performers who dance to raise funds for those suffering with cancer in Cuba. At the end of last year, the shop was also honoured with a plaque from the Association for Parents of Children with Cancer in the Balearic Islands (ASPANOB), presented by Jaime Coll, the President and Founder of the entity. Calanova Cancer Care has praised the volunteers who have given up their time to help the charity, in addition to residents who have generously donated their belongings and those who have visited the shop. From February 1, all men’s and women’s clothes will be discounted, where citizens are warmly invited to pay a visit.

Deadly blaze A FIVE-YEAR-OLD child died in a house fire in Vilafranca de Bonany on Saturday, January 25. It is understood the blaze broke out just before 10.30am, ripping through a property on Calle Sant Josep de Vilafranca. As the fire was called in, ambulances, the Fire Brigade and patrols from the Local and National Police raced to the scene with firefighters bravely battling the flames to rescue the occupants of the house, pulling out the child and his grandmother. Paramedics performed CPR on the

youngster for almost an hour, however despite their best efforts he could not be saved. The grandmother was taken to Manacor Hospital with severe burns. Two firefighters were also admitted to hospital for smoke inhalation with the 112 emergency department providing psychological help to the family, residents and close friends. Saddened by the incident, Vilafranca City Council declared three days of mourning with flags flown at half mast on the town hall. The cause of the fire is being investigated.

The Irish question remains DESPITE assurances from Prime Minister Boris Johnson that there will be no check points for goods in Northern Ireland, the European Union has produced a map showing examples of where they should be! In essence, goods being sent from British ports to Belfast will be subject to EU rules and will need to be checked by British customs and the same will be true of goods coming from Northern Ireland to the UK. Meanwhile in an interview with WITH the avowed intention of making Britain a ‘global science superpower’ top scientists, researchers and mathematicians will be granted fast-tracked entry to the UK after Brexit. The decision was announced by Boris Johnson as he invited the ‘most talented minds in the world’ to make their way to the UK. The current ‘Global Talent’ visa which will have no limits to the

Mr Varadkar believes that the British prime minster is greatly mistaken in believing that a trade deal will be possible to agree during 2020 and sees it taking longer. He explained that Europe is in the driving seat with a population of 450 million people and 27 countries against the UK and 60 million and therefore as in the FA Cup, the EU will field a much stronger team.

Black Death THIS year marks 200 years since the most devastating pandemic took place in the history of Mallorca. The bubonic plague, locally known as the ‘Plague of Llevant’ claimed the lives of 2,434 residents from Son Servera, Artà, Capdepera and Sant Llorenç in 1820. A multidisciplinary

team, led by microbiologist Toni Bennàssar and Archaeologist Francisca Cardona, will now try to find the strain of the disease by examining the Bellpuig estate, where some 1,000 victims were laid to rest. A selection of corpses will be exhumed, where DNA samples will then be extracted and analysed using the ge-

netic qPCR technique to reconstruct the microorganism linked to the epidemic. The goal of the study is to establish the evolution of the strain and shed light on its possible origin. At present, the most accepted theory is that the plague reached the coast of Son Servera through a ship travelling from Tangier in Morocco.

Replacing a lost or expired British passport from Spain W I T H B re x i t p o s s i b l y a ro u n d t h e c o r n e r, i f y o u h a v e l e s s than six months life left on your passport it would be a good idea to renew sooner rather than later. Quite often when different official forms are digitalised, it becomes more rather than less confusing and you need to have a degree in programming in order to proceed. For once however, the British government has made things much easier and far less complicated in applying for a replacement passport if yours has been lost or is about to expire. No longer do you need to supply lots of forms including birth certificates and to have a photograph physically signed on the back by someone who knows you and it really is now quite easy if you have access to a computer. Very simply visit https://www.gov. uk/overseas-passports and you’re taken through the whole process step by step and the only drawback is that there isn’t a single page detailing everything including costs as you have to go through a page at a time. There is however a passports link which does give quite a lot of information on the website, but not everything. Even if you have lost or had your passport stolen, you are not precluded for applying online for a replacement, but you have to declare it lost in advance also online. As a real bonus you can now use digital photograph and there are quite explicit rules about what is acceptable as you navigate the website and whilst it may take a couple of attempts, provided you remove any glasses and stand in front of a

white background, a selfie taken with a phone will probably work ok. If you are not happy using a phone camera, then most towns have at least one print shop where they can photograph you and give you a digital image on a memory stick or card. As you progress through the procedure you will be best served by having access to details of your previous passport, but it isn’t actually essential and the site does report back to a human in the UK who can check. When you post your photograph, you will be asked to give details (including email address) of a person of standing who can confirm that they know you and that the photograph is of you. The whole process can take up to six weeks from start to finish and this will include delivery via courier to your address in Spain and you have to pay with a debit or credit card for the cost of the passport (depends upon number of pages) and courier fee at the time of submitting the application online. You will be sent a special code which will allow you to track your passport through all of its stages. In the event that you have lost your passport and need a temporary replacement, that can also be done online. It is more expensive than a normal passport, is usually good for one round trip only and will normally be issued by the British Consulate in Malaga. For those without computers, it is still possible to apply through the post and there are even different shops with English-speaking staff scattered around Spain where for a fee they will help you complete the forms and send them off for you.

New UK overdraft rates WHEN you consider that the Bank of England Base Rate is just 0.75 per cent and savers are doing well to obtain interest at 3 per cent, consumers must be wondering how the High Streets banks can justify introducing new overdraft rates of almost 40 per cent! The Financial Conduct Authority instructed the banks to be more transparent with charges for unau­ thorised overdrafts and accepted that there might be some need to increase approved overdraft rates but apparently relied on the expec­ tation that banks would be com­ petitive keeping down costs.

NEW RATES: Banks could be on to another good thing

Unemployment down in 2019 THE latest survey on employment in Spain, published by the National Statistics Institute, showed that by the end of 2019 unemployment had dropped to 13.78 per cent, the lowest annual fig-

ure since 2008. With the creation of 402,300, the total number unemployed in Spain is now 3,191,900 but the 2019 new jobs total is the lowest since 2014 and a large amount

still encompasses temporar y jobs based on the run up to Christmas. Andalucia has seen the largest fall in unemployment with 41,900 people finding jobs.

They are now surprised to dis­ cover that the majority of banks have settled on an annual rate of between 39 and 40 per cent and have asked the banks to explain their thinking behind both the charges and the lack of competi­ tion. In addition, they have asked how the banks will deal with those who are worse off under the new sys­ tem and their response will be awaited urgently by those who may be affected. When many banks introduced daily charges it was clear that there was an overall increase to the con­ sumer and now if these new rates go through unchanged, an autho­ rised overdraft is likely to be more expensive than using a credit card. Whilst there may be savings for those who used unauthorised over­ drafts, it is estimated that around 19 million people who have ac­ counts with UK banks have autho­ rised overdrafts and it could mean that they will be paying £400 (€450) interest on every £1,000 (€1,150) they borrow from the banks.

This latest directive truly does take the whole tin. The utterly common sense starved British plod, is now encouraging members of the public to report ‘hateful white people, even if they have committed no crime’! They have actually released a short cartoon video, which depicts a number of extreme acts by snarling white thugs as examples of the ‘hate’ they consider unacceptable. One shows a man pulling off a Muslim woman’s hajib. Another depicts a crew cut individual abusing a black shopkeeper and a further example demonstrates a crestfallen black schoolboy being refused permission to board a bus. into their thick, left wing biased mentality, that this ‘cartoon’ is in itself reverse racism at its very worst? Can they also not understand quite how open to abuse a directive of this nature can be? This is an invitation for all ethnic minorities to report

the white population for just about anything they consider not quite to their liking. An opportunity to create a positive tsunami of time wasting frivolous racist accusations. How long before the complaints begin to pour in that

someone felt they were, looked at in a ‘wrong way’ or ‘bumped into’ purposely? We already had the case of the Muslim person who considered a driver honked his horn aggressively. That accusation could be considered a near homicide compared to the level of nonsense claims that could now almost certainly descend on the authorities. Can our esteemed snowflake appeasers also not understand that rubbish of this ilk drives even more of a wedge between the beleaguered indigenous population and its ethnic counterparts; pushing them even further apart? And what about the other way around? What about the highly objectionable verbal accusations of being ‘privileged white men,’ publicly voiced by black lady TV panellists of late? I don’t hear anyone complaining about these blatant racist outbursts. Well of course

not. Can’t upset the minorities can we? Thank the Lord that with my choice of residence I don’t have to put up with it all. Mind you, only last week I was actually told to ‘go back to my own country.’ Although I am aware that there are recourses in Spain for this type of behaviour, I simply shrugged it off as an ignorant isolated remark. A brainwashed UK citizen would probably have run crying to the authorities and got the perpetrator six months! Fortunately Spain has got its priorities right. Not a great deal of ‘nanny state’ nonsense over here, I’m delighted to say. What a shame the country I love has got it all so wrong, and allowed the snowflakes and ‘wokers’ to bring it to its knees. SCOOTER MADNESS DEAR Euro Weekly, I am writing to you regarding electric scooters, which are all the trend right now. They are dangerous things that shouldn’t be allowed. If you allow them on the pavements you get people with serious injuries and the drivers facing jail time. If you allow them on the roads, you get accidents and people on scooters getting killed. It’s a lose-lose situation either way. I don’t think bike lanes are a good idea either, apart from the fact that people on scooters seem set on disobeying the law. The only viable solution is a lane specific to scooters, and I can assure you tax payers don’t want to finance that! For now, the simplest resolution is to ban them completely. Of course, they aren’t our biggest problem, but they are a problem. Let’s get rid of them once and for all, please! Tony Richards Torrox Costa

No need for weed EURO WEEKLY, There is an issue that needs to be addressed by all of us. Marihuana is a powerful drug that is absolutely rampant in most countries. In the UK it’s also a big problem, although maybe its consumption is more private than here in Spain. I live close to the centre of Alicante and I smell it almost every time I’m out and about. I’m not condemning the use of marihuana in any way, and I believe that it can be good for things like Parkinson’s. But there needs to be control over the use of this powerful drug. At what point did smoking marihuana become normalised? It’s not the same as smoking a cigarette and we need to remind the younger generation of this. Governments need to step their game up and put laws in place that can control the situation. In this day and age, it should be possible to stop the crime and devastation surrounding this drug. Joining together DEAR EWN I’m glad that as a mostly British community we are also getting stuck in with our Spanish compatriots. In Costa Blanca in Orihuela we are now battling the new multilingualism laws that have been approved for the upcoming school year. As parents, we are pretty worried how this will affect our children. My wife and I have two children in school who speak Spanish almost

fluently, but barely any Valencian. Classes in Valencian would be very hard for them, and me and my wife already discussed moving them to a British school. Despite these struggles, the recent protests have been really nice for us in the community. Awards season THIS week, Deborah Dugan, the former CEO of the Recording Academy, the body that oversees the Grammy Awards, filed a discrimination lawsuit against her former employer days ahead of the annual ceremony. It included allegations of gender discrimination, and corruption, casting a shadow of doubt and mistrust on the award system revered as music’s highest honour. Dugan mentions in her claims that huge worldwide artists of colour such as Beyoncé, Kanye West, and Mariah Carey, were snubbed in previous years, and that the biggest awards tend to go to rock, country, and pop artists. She then outlined how the Grammy voting process is allegedly tainted. Submissions for awards are initially voted on by members of the Academy, however, once these nominations are whittled down, the board promotes artists they have relationships with, and ‘manipulates the nominations process’ to include artists they want to perform during the ceremony. In her legal filing, Dugan blamed the ‘boys’ club’ mentality of executives as influential factors that were ultimately reflected in the voting process for annual Grammy nominations. During Dugan’s short time as CEO of the Academy, she was adamant about making changes to address public concern that the Grammys were becoming outdated and failed to showcase a more diverse pool of musicians. The Recording Academy denied the rigging accusations in a statement saying, “Spurious allegations claiming members or committees use our process to push forward nominations for artists they have relationships with are categorically false, misleading and wrong.” With shadows cast over many of these long-running awards ceremonies can they ever go back to awards for pure merit?

Little smokers ALMOST half of the children admitted to hospital for asthma are passive smokers, according to a study conducted at the Gregorio Marañón Hospital in Madrid. The information coincides with data given by the World Health Organisation, that states 40 per cent of children are exposed to passive smoking at home. In Spain, the prevalence of childhood asthma is estimated at around 10 per cent. Up until now, it was known that babies born of smoking mothers had diminished lung function and that children exposed to passive smoking also suffered an alteration of their lung capacity. The study analysed the situation of 365 children who, at some time between 2011 and 2015, were admitted to hospital due to an asthmatic crisis. It revealed that 41 per cent of children who had severe asthmatic crises were subjected to passive smoking at home. The average age of patients in the paediatrics ward was five and the dura-

Fracturing affliction THREE MILLION people in Spain suffer from osteoporosis, a degenerative disease that affects the density and quality of the bones. The name literally translates to ‘porous bone’ and causes bones to become increasingly fragile. It is this fragility in the bones that causes them to fracture easily. In Spain, more than 330,000 bone fractures are called by the disease every year, especially in the hips and forearms. The danger of the condition is the difficulty to detect it. It is generally asymptomatic and only begins to show once its in an advanced state, preventing doctors from slowing its evolution.

The main cause of bone deterioration is age and it begins to appear in people over 60. The body absorbs calcium to keep bones strong, but over time the absorption capacity decreases and bones become less dense. In addition to age, there are many other factors that can contribute to the onset of osteoporosis. Being a woman is one of the main factors, as the disease mainly affects women, while men only have a 13 per cent risk. Having a family history, being underweight, smoking, excessive alcohol and coffee consumption can also cause the conditions. A diet

A balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D is essential. Combining foods like fatty fish, dairy, nuts, legumes, green leafy vegetables and eggs with sun exposure should be sufficient. Physical exercise also helps to maintain bone health. It decreases the risk of fractures and if practised outdoors, it helps to absorb the necessary vitamin D. Toxic habits such as alcohol consumption or tobacco are discouraged, as they reduce the absorption of calcium and other important minerals including phosphorous and magnesium. After menopause women, or people with an increased risk of osteoporosis, should be reviewed. A test to measure bone mass allows doctors to make an exact diagnosis.

I set myself the challenge of cooking two tapas dishes in five minutes. Add in the two minutes of preparation and I had two delicious dishes on the table for lunch in a

Have ready two garlic cloves chopped, a red chilli deseeded and chopped and some parsley finely chopped. Put the peppers in a small bowl and cover with water. That’s it, the prep is done. Get two pans on a high heat, when hot add olive oil to both pans. Take the peppers out of the water

and shake excess water off, put carefully in the pan, they will spit a bit, but it’s the dampness of the peppers that will make them blister. Put the garlic and chilli in the other pan, leave a minute then add the whole prawns. A minute or

two on each side, sprinkle in the parsley and remove to your serving dish. Cover with the juices from the pan. The peppers are ready when they have started to collapse in the middle. Sprinkle both dishes with sea salt. Enjoy!

HOTEL investment in Spain dropped in 2019, following two years of record-breaking figures. The numbers are in, and they reveal that investment in the holiday industry was down by 51 per cent compared to 2018. In total, investments reached €2,500 million compared to the €4,900 million in 2018. Despite this, real estate consultants point out that the Spanish hotel segment closed a year of moderate trade. The change in trading is mainly due to the reduction in corporate operations and levels of investments

Pricey gift giving DONATION in the Spanish legal system is recognised as an act whereby a person freely gives one thing to another, who accepts it. This gift can be money, stocks or even a house. Of course, every time a donation occurs, the beneficiary of the gift must pay the inheritance and donations tax. When property is gifted, the tax can vary drastically depending of kinship and the Autonomous Community where the house is located. In addition, capital gains and the IRPF tax must also be paid. The legal system does not allow these types of transfers to be cancelled once they have been completed, barring certain exceptions. Bequeathing any type of real estate is a big decision that should not be taken lightly. However, there are three main exceptions that the property holder can take advantage of if they decide to rescind the gift. The first exception considers the mere fact that the benefactor has children following the initial donation. These gifts are revocable as at the time of completion, the bene-
