ALMERIA’S year-long status as Spanish gastronomy capital has put not just the city, but the entire province on foodies’ radar, according to the mayor. Speaking shortly before officially handing over the gastronomy title to Murcia at the FITUR international tourism fair in Madrid, Ramon Fer nandez-Pacheco claimed Almeria 2019 had been the best since the award initiative was launched in 2012. He said Almeria had gained promotion worth €17.9 million and an audience of 335 million people. He also pointed to the 600 foodrelated activities over the year and the 68,000 people who had passed through the doors of the gastronomy title headquarters in the city centre. “This has been a project of the whole province, decidedly contributing to making it a gastronomy tourist destination well worth considering,” the mayor commented. serving as the venue for a congress for journalists and writers specialising in food and tourism. Among last year’s numerous promotions beyond the provincial borders were advertising on London buses, at major national airports, in Madrid’s central Plaza de Callao and at cinemas in the Spanish capital. Fernandez-Pacheco made it clear the promotions linking the provincial capital with fine dining will continue this year and beyond, now under the slogan ‘Almeria, gastronomy city: irresistible.’
THE Almeria-Murcia AVE high-speed rail link was top of the agenda at a meeting between the Sub-delegation of the Government and the ASEMPAL provincial business federation to discuss infrastructure. The Sub-delegation explained the recent talks had been principally to establish the Almeria business community’s main demands and to assess the current situation of infrastructure projects in the province. The Government Sub-delegate Manuel del la Fuente told ASEMPAL president Jose Cano Garcia the Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda Ministry (formerly the Public Works Ministry), had since June put out to tender new sections of the high-speed rail link adding up to €1,200 million, demonstrating the “indisputable commitment” of the national government to the so-called ‘Mediterranean Corridor.’ Cano Garcia meanwhile called on the government to act as quickly as possible on the AVE in Almeria, expressing the concerns of members of the business community about the procedural delays on sections where works have yet to get underway. He requested a meeting with the Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda Minister to find out first-hand about the forecasts, planning and calendar for strategic infrastructure in the province. Also discussed at the meeting were several planned highway projects, among them the remodelling of the link road between the A-7 motorway and the A-92 in Viator, the construction of a third lane on the Mediterranean motorway between the Roquetas de Mar and Almeria City link roads and the remodelling of the Copo and Santa Maria link roads where the A-7 goes through El Ejido. The expected investment is more than €65 million.

Figures from the IECA Andalucia Institute of Statistics and Cartography reveal that 2,623,764 tourists came to the province last year, 63,000 more than in 2018. On top of that, average daily spending per visitor reached a historic €63.6 a day. The average length of a stay was 7.9 days. The study also put tourists’ typical overall rating for the province at 7.9 points out of 10.
“Almeria demonstrates with these figures that it is a consolidated destination with a tourism structure which responds to the expectations of the people who visit us”, commented Junta de Andalucia Tourism territorial delegate Jose Luis Delgado on the report findings. Delgado promised his department will “continuing working hand-in-hand with the sector to improve the quality of our services, offering new products and experiences which allow for highlighting the value of every corner of our province.”
The delegate underlined the strong presence of the Tourism delegation at last week’s FITUR international travel fair in Madrid to illustrate his point. He also referred to the development of new products related with flamenco, and to five direct actions in the province under the Turismo Andaluz 2020 Action Plan. These include the Jet2Holidays 2020 conference, which Delgado said will give a further boost to the province’s standing as a visitor destination among the British market.

EL EJIDO Council has called for government action on the Balerma and Guardias Viejas coast to find an ‘urgent, definitive and structural solution to the serious regression problems,’ which the local authority maintains have been worsened by extreme weather events in recent months.
A ROQUETAS DE MAR robber is under arrest after the Guardia Civil surprised him with stolen goods in his hands. Officers detained 27-year-old EZ for breaking into a Roquetas home via a staircase just minutes earlier. A night patrol had been doing the rounds of a residential area close to the beach in the early hours of the morning when they spotted an individual on a bike lurking around. Officers approached him and asked for ID, discovering he was carrying clothing and other items which they suspected were not his. An inspection of the area and the homeowner’s report about the robbery confirmed the items had been stolen. It turned out the 27-year-old has an extensive criminal record for house break-ins in the western part of Almeria Province. The items taken from the Roquetas property have been returned to the rightful owner.
ALMERIA Council and Jet2 have rubberstamped an agreement on promoting the city and El Toyo to the British. The city authority revealed the €24,000 publicity campaign will be financed 50-50 by the council and the UK tour operator, and will focus particularly on social media. It will also include a direct mailing to approximately 40,000 people in the UK who have already travelled with Jet2 to other destinations near to Almeria or which have characteristics in common with the province. “Thanks to this agreement there will be an effective promotion directed at British people who have already travelled to Spain or who carry out searches on travel to Spain and Andalucia,” Almeria mayor Ramon Fernandez-Pacheco explained. The council reported that Jet2 brought some 25,000 British tourists to Almeria Province last year, and expressed its confidence the promotional campaign will be a success.
Tree loss LAST week’s heavy snowfall snapped the trunk of a thousandyear-old holm oak in Marchal del Abogado in Seron. The ancient tree, which had Natural Monument status and was included on the Andalucia Inventory of Singular Groves and Trees, was reportedly diseased and therefore fragile.

Brushing up Adra’s image ADRA Council has announced a major investment in a new four-year urban cleaning and waste disposal management plan aimed up brushing up the municipality’s image. Mayor Manuel Cortes explained the local authority will invest €1.5 million in the initiative “to reinforce these municipal services and with this, the image of our town and the quality of residents’ lives.” At a presentation accompanied by the Urban Cleaning and Municipal Services councillors Jose Crespo and Francisco Lopez, Cortes said his governing team had been “putting emphasis on making the town’s basic services more efficient since the last legislature, and we are going to continue on this line with this plan.” The mayor also called on local residents to do their bit, commenting, “We need everyone’s collab-

chinery and extra staff as key to achieving its objectives, and also to the application of new technologies. This will, it said, not only improve the quality and planning of the daily service, but also offer residents a direct line of communication for residents to report incidents.
Cortes talked too about the importance of awareness-raising campaigns on the environment and on municipal cleaning and maintenance regulations. “Between us all we must keep our town the way it deserves to be so we can enjoy,” he stressed. At the same time, the council will be expanding and renewing the municipality’s rubbish skips, with plans to increase capacity for recycling paper, clothes and cooking oil, and for collecting electrical goods and other items. The local authority will also ask the authorities responsible for collecting plastic packaging and glass to monitor and analyse the service with a view to upping management efficiency. The council maintains the plan represents a step forward in a service model ‘more in keeping with the growth of the town.’
Nijar farmer killed in hailstorm NIJAR Council declared two days of official mourning for a 77-year-old local farmer who died after becoming trapped under a greenhouse near Campohermoso which came down in last week’s hailstorm. According to reports the structure collapsed due to the accumulation of hailstones on the roof.
Nijar councillors expressed their condolences for Jose Bautista Salvador’s family at a plenary meeting last Thursday and observed a minute’s silence out of respect for the Storm Gloria victim. They also agreed that flags on official buildings in the municipality should fly at half-mast.

Commenting during a visit to Campohermoso and Saladar y Leche to see firsthand the aftermath of the storm, Crespo explained it could be classified as a natural disaster given that it had affected more than 30 per cent of the area of Nijar used for agriculture. The mayor went as far as saying the impact of the hailstorm had put at risk the municipality’s most important economic sector given it came on top of last year’s autumn’s destructive extreme weather events.

THE Almanzora Valley tourist business association has a new president to lead the organisation in its bid to boost the region’s appeal as a visitor destination. Luis Aurelio Perez takes over as association head after gaining the unanimous backing of members at the ordinary assembly celebrated recently in Olula del Rio to select the governing council for the next two years. Members discussed the most important issues which the association has been working on as part of the ‘Turisimo Almanzora’ project since the end of 2017, and in which 22 of the region’s municipalities are participating. The main objective is to establish the Almanzora Valley as an attractive option for visitors from Almeria and neighbouring provinces who live with a two to three-hour drive. Last year the association organised two ‘Fam trips’ for travel agents and managed 30 one-day excursions with travel agencies in Almeria, Murcia, Granada and Alicante. The or-

Cash for Zurgena school THE Friends of Zurgena Charity has shown its support for the local school with a €2,020 contribution for the purchase of digital boards and other much needed equipment. FOZC members dropped into the school last Thursday to present school headmaster Jose Antonio Galera and English teacher Rosario with the money the charity has raised. FOZC’s Peter Dell said they had hoped to raise in excess of €3,000, “unforeseen circumstances” getting in the way of achieving their aim. The charity is planning seven or eight shows at the old La Alfoquia railway station this year and the team is confident they will reach their target. FOZC promises “top artists from around Europe and the UK.” The first night of entertainment is on Thursday February 6, and another on March 11.

Produced by the local council, the video offers a tour around the town’s streets, squares, parks and most important monuments, like the castle and the church. The production also features the outlying Overa, Nieva, Urcal and San Francisco areas of the municipality, sports facilities, cultural options, its cuisine and the landscapes and countryside. NBA star booked for Dreambeach AMERICAN basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal has been booked for next summer’s Dreambeach electronic music festival staged on the beaches of Villaricos and Palomares. The NBA star will perform as DJ Diesel. Cuevas del Almanzora Council broke the news at this week’s FITUR international travel fair in Madrid at the presentation of what will be the eighth edition of the music festival. “I have no doubt this new edition of Dreambeach will be a success and a meeting point for thousands of young people, who come to Cuevas not just for the grand show that it is,” the mayor Antonio Fernandez Liria affirmed, but also for “our excellent climate, our magnificent beaches, our cuisine and for our good people.” Fernandez Liria said the festival has

Declaration of overseas assets Expatriates living in Spain who are considered Tax Residents are required to submit Form 720 to the tax authorities listing assets held overseas if their value amounts to €50,000 or more in certain categories. There are three groups which are relevant and you only need submit the declaration for any group where your assets exceed the €50,000 limit. THE three groups are: • Bank Accounts which are already open, or for which you are already an account holder during the year which corresponds to the declaration. The valuation should be based on whichever is the highest the balance as at December 31 or the average balance for the last quarter of the year. • All types of financial assets which includes information on securities, assets, shares or amounts representing the capital stock of all types of companies, or the transfer of capital to third parties held abroad, as well as life insurances for which the individual is the beneficiary and annuities or temporary income of which they are the beneficiary. The valuation should be based on the value on December 31 of the year being declared. • Real estate of all types

Yes for upgrades THE Diputacion de Almeria has given the green light to a €240,000 investment to highway upgrades in the La Alpujarra and Levante regions of the province. The provincial government will carry out works on the AL-6109 running from Los Gallardos to Lubrin via Bedar and on the A-348 going from Canjayar to Abla via Ohanes, Tices and Santillana. The works come under a plan aimed at keeping the 1,200 kilometres of roads making up the provincial highway network continually maintained and in optimum condition, the provincial administration said. “You will see an increase in safety and comfort for all those using these roads daily, and it will make communications between these localities easier,” commented Diputacion Public Works deputy Oscar Liria on the investment. “These works are on the line of benefiting inland municipalities, which also contributes to strengthening another of the provincial institution’s main aims: the fight against depopulation.”

Drivers trapped THE Guardia Civil have had to go to the rescue of several drivers trapped on secondary roads covered in snow and ice in inland areas of the province last week. A number of motorists got stuck on the A-399 between Oria and Chrivel. Another road which was one of the worst affected by the wintery weather was the AL-4404 running from Aulago to Calar Alto: one driver lost control of their vehicle and ended up half on the hard shoulder. By the time a Guardia patrol reached him he was showing signs of hyperthermia. Officers had to use shovels and jacks to get the car off the road and leave the way clear for the possible arrival of snow ploughs, then get the driver to safety. The Guardia communications centre also reported someone was trapped at the kilometre 26 mark on the same road at a height of some 2,000 metres. As the road was impassable officers were forced to tramp on foot for more than a kilometre to get to the location, where they found a driver

unable to move their car and in quite a state. Again the Guardia managed to get the motorist to safety. The Almeria Guardia Command Headquarters put out a warning reminding drivers planning to travel in snow-affected areas of the province to take care and to check the state of roads before setting out.

EURO WEEKLY NEWS had the pleasure of talking to British expat Sheila Clifford this week. Sheila is one of the only female members of the Walking Football League Spain and at 62 years old she is first to admit that her body feels a little slower. But her mind is well and truly in the game! Growing up in South London she considered herself a bit of a tomboy. She would rush home from school to play football with the boys on the council estate. Each block of flats would play against the other with the caretaker as referee, however, he wouldn’t let her play in the bigger games because she was a girl and in those day’s football was thought to be a boys sport. Being such a valued player her playmates even offered to pretend she was a boy, so she didn’t miss out. One day, she heard that they were holding trials for Chelsea women’s team and with her
Sheila (bottom row second left) with her Chelsea teammates. passion and skills she managed to get in, she enjoyed it so much she managed to talk her best friend into joining too. The team was unstoppable and used to train on Clapham Common and then Hackney Marshes. Sheila has many fond memories of her time with Chelsea but when asked by EWN of her proudest she said: “One that stands out is in my Chelsea days is when we played QPR’s A team in the five-a-side semi-final. QPR was

unbeatable every year, but we were youngsters and well-skilled we beat them, and we were so proud. We went on to play their B team in the final the next week and beat them too.” After a time she moved to Bournemouth and began working as a Drug and Alcohol Support Worker in the prison service. Her football career had gone on the back burner but here she found they had a Prison Service national team and her passion was reignited.

The team was invited to play in Australia in a worldwide championship that included players from all the emergency and prison services. Not only was it a trip of a lifetime but her team won the Gold medal. Sheila moved to Spain from Bermuda just over two years ago in September 2018. She now lives in Riogordo village, Malaga but unable to slow to a Spanish pace she wanted to find something to do with her time and keep her active.
Her friend Paddy recently introduced her to Walking Football which is aimed at people over 50 who want to continue to play the game they love but without the running and the contact involved with normal football. She trains with the players every Thursday and just played her first official match with team Aston Viñuela where she scored a goal for the winners. The club has allowed her to make new friends like her other female teammate Julie Pollitt and given them a social platform that includes the game they are so passionate about. Sheila is so passionate about the sport and plays in her favourite team’s colours, no not Chelsea blue but Manchester United red. She points out “I love football, playing it, watching it and can talking about it to anybody.” And goes on to say, “I don’t have any regrets but I wish I was born 40 years later. Look at it today there are so many opportunities for girls now.”

Giant geode Japanese TV star PULPI’S giant geode has starred in a Japanese TV programme. The geological phenomenon appears in a 54minute long episode of ‘Discovery of the World’s Mysteries.’ The programme featured a tour around the galleries of the Rica mine until reaching the geode. The mine located in the Pilar de Jaravia area of the municipality has been open to visitors since the beginning of last August. Since then it has attracted thousands of people to marvel at the surprising source of minerals and the natural wonder. Discoveries of the World attracts an audience of some 10 million viewers.

Rural road plan support A PROPOSAL to apply for regional government assistance for Adra rural road upgrades got the backing of all the political parties represented on the local council at the last plenary meeting. The administration will ask to participate in the Junta de Andalucia’s rural road improvement plan in order to gain a subsidy for works on a 900metre stretch of the Camino del Marchalejo and 1,800 metres of the Camino de la Canaleja. The local authority said the move reflected its commitment to “supporting farmers through the improvement of basic in-
frastructure for carrying out their work,” particularly given the importance of the agricultural sector for the local economy. Specifically, the aim is to asphalt the two lanes, thereby helping to increase productivity and competitiveness, while at the same time benefiting local residents, the council commented. A proposal put forward by the conservative Popular Party and the centrist Ciudadanos on cleaning up agriculture waste was also approved at the plenary session with the support of the far-right Vox, and the votes against of the centre-left PSOE and the leftist Plataforma.
The council governing team said as part of its aim to raise awareness about and increase the elimination of agricultural residues it has proposed an amendment to a motion presented by Plataforma. Among the agreements included with the amendment are one urging the national Agriculture Ministry to establish an integrated system for tracing agricultural residues and to develop a regulatory framework which demands that manufacturers encourage this management model based on the circular economy, and which the local authority maintains is better

for the environment. The Junta de Andalucia is also urged to continue with its campaign of cleaning out all residues from public water courses in Almeria Province where it is needed. Also to intensify the campaign for monitoring and issuing penalties for uncontrolled agricultural waste dumping. The council reported that the municipality’s Cajorros, La Vieja, Periano, Bolaños and La Jardinera water courses have been cleaned out in recent months and a number of farmers have been ordered to eliminate agricultural waste from their farms.

Educational innovation ADRA’S fishing museum has a new innovative educational resource aimed at children. The 11-page storybook entitled ‘Las aventuras de Julita la pirata’ (The adventures of Julia the pirate) provides a way for children to learn about the museum through games, word searches, crosswords, drawing, riddles and other activities. The creative teaching
booklet was created by Vanessa Fernandez, Elisa Jimenez and Sebastian Perez, all staff at the Iniciativa de Cooperación Local, and the project was launched by the local council’s Tourism department. Speaking at the presentation of the booklet, Adra Culture councillor Elisa Fernandez thanked the three creators for all the work they put into
the project. She said it would enable children who visit the fishing museum “to carry on learning about the history of our municipality.” Vanessa Fernandez explained the booklet was aimed at six to 12-yearolds to make their visit to the museum more fun. “When children learn through play it keeps their attention more easily,” she added.
TV frequency change THE countdown has begun to the change of terrestrial digital TV (TDT) frequency changes throughout Almeria. The Sub-delegation of the Government has issued a reminder that some Spanish national and regional channels will stop broadcasting on their old frequencies on February 13 in the province’s 103 municipalities. The Sub-delegation reported that 66 per cent of communal buildings in Almeria have carried out the necessary changes to enable residents to carry on enjoying the full TDT line-up from that date onwards. Under a royal decree issued last June subsidies are available to affected communities of owners of between
€104.30 and €677.95 per building to help meet the costs of the necessary changes. Applications can be presented after the signal reception equipment has been adapted by a company registered on the Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructure’s register for installers up until the end of September. The statement also made the point that after February 13 anyone wishing to watch Spanish TV channels on TDT will have to retune their TV with the remote control. Replacing a lost or expired British passport from Spain W I T H B re x i t p o s s i b l y a ro u n d t h e c o r n e r, i f y o u h a v e l e s s than six months life left on your passport it would be a good idea to renew sooner rather than later. Quite often when different official forms are digitalised, it becomes more rather than less confusing and you need to have a degree in programming in order to proceed. For once however, the British government has made things much easier and far less complicated in applying for a replacement passport if yours has been lost or is about to expire. No longer do you need to supply lots of forms including birth certificates and to have a photograph physically signed on the back by someone who knows you and it really is now quite easy if you have access to a computer. Very simply visit https://www.gov. uk/overseas-passports and you’re taken through the whole process step by step and the only drawback is that there isn’t a single page detailing everything including costs as you have to go through a page at a time. There is however a passports link which does give quite a lot of information on the website, but not everything. Even if you have lost or had your passport stolen, you are not precluded for applying online for a replacement, but you have to declare it lost in advance also online. As a real bonus you can now use digital photograph and there are quite explicit rules about what is acceptable as you navigate the website and whilst it may take a couple of attempts, provided you remove any glasses and stand in front of a
white background, a selfie taken with a phone will probably work ok. If you are not happy using a phone camera, then most towns have at least one print shop where they can photograph you and give you a digital image on a memory stick or card. As you progress through the procedure you will be best served by having access to details of your previous passport, but it isn’t actually essential and the site does report back to a human in the UK who can check. When you post your photograph, you will be asked to give details (including email address) of a person of standing who can confirm that they know you and that the photograph is of you. The whole process can take up to six weeks from start to finish and this will include delivery via courier to your address in Spain and you have to pay with a debit or credit card for the cost of the passport (depends upon number of pages) and courier fee at the time of submitting the application online. You will be sent a special code which will allow you to track your passport through all of its stages. In the event that you have lost your passport and need a temporary replacement, that can also be done online. It is more expensive than a normal passport, is usually good for one round trip only and will normally be issued by the British Consulate in Malaga. For those without computers, it is still possible to apply through the post and there are even different shops with English-speaking staff scattered around Spain where for a fee they will help you complete the forms and send them off for you.

There is also €12 million for 128 actions on water courses, €8 million for rural roads and €3 million for water works. The head of the Public Work delegation’s Highway Maintenance and Exploitation Section, Manuel A Garcia, said the works on the four highways are due to start immediately.

New UK overdraft rates WHEN you consider that the Bank of England Base Rate is just 0.75 per cent and savers are doing well to obtain interest at 3 per cent, consumers must be wondering how the High Streets banks can justify introducing new overdraft rates of almost 40 per cent! The Financial Conduct Authority instructed the banks to be more transparent with charges for unau thorised overdrafts and accepted that there might be some need to increase approved overdraft rates but apparently relied on the expec tation that banks would be com petitive keeping down costs.

Unemployment down in 2019 THE latest survey on employment in Spain, published by the National Statistics Institute, showed that by the end of 2019 unemployment had dropped to 13.78 per cent, the lowest annual fig-
ure since 2008. With the creation of 402,300, the total number unemployed in Spain is now 3,191,900 but the 2019 new jobs total is the lowest since 2014 and a large amount
still encompasses temporar y jobs based on the run up to Christmas. Andalucia has seen the largest fall in unemployment with 41,900 people finding jobs.
They are now surprised to dis cover that the majority of banks have settled on an annual rate of between 39 and 40 per cent and have asked the banks to explain their thinking behind both the charges and the lack of competi tion. In addition, they have asked how the banks will deal with those who are worse off under the new sys tem and their response will be awaited urgently by those who may be affected. When many banks introduced daily charges it was clear that there was an overall increase to the con sumer and now if these new rates go through unchanged, an autho rised overdraft is likely to be more expensive than using a credit card. Whilst there may be savings for those who used unauthorised over drafts, it is estimated that around 19 million people who have ac counts with UK banks have autho rised overdrafts and it could mean that they will be paying £400 (€450) interest on every £1,000 (€1,150) they borrow from the banks.

The utterly common sense starved British plod, is now encouraging members of the public to report ‘hateful white people, even if they have committed no crime’! They have actually released a short cartoon video, which depicts a number of extreme acts by snarling white thugs as examples of the ‘hate’ they consider unacceptable. One shows a man pulling off a Muslim woman’s hajib. Another depicts a crew cut individual abusing a black shopkeeper and a further example demonstrates a crestfallen black schoolboy being refused permission to board a bus. Can’t these naive morons get

into their thick, left wing biased mentality, that this ‘cartoon’ is in itself reverse racism at its very worst? Can they also not understand quite how open to abuse a directive of this nature can be? This is an invitation for all ethnic minorities to report
the white population for just about anything they consider not quite to their liking. An opportunity to create a positive tsunami of time wasting frivolous racist accusations. How long before the complaints begin to pour in that
someone felt they were, looked at in a ‘wrong way’ or ‘bumped into’ purposely? We already had the case of the Muslim person who considered a driver honked his horn aggressively. That accusation could be considered a near homicide compared to the level of nonsense claims that could now almost certainly descend on the authorities. Can our esteemed snowflake appeasers also not understand that rubbish of this ilk drives even more of a wedge between the beleaguered indigenous population and its ethnic counterparts; pushing them even further apart? And what about the other way around? What about the highly objectionable verbal accusations of being ‘privileged white men,’ publicly voiced by black lady TV panellists of late? I don’t hear anyone complaining about these blatant racist outbursts. Well of course
not. Can’t upset the minorities can we? Thank the Lord that with my choice of residence I don’t have to put up with it all. Mind you, only last week I was actually told to ‘go back to my own country.’ Although I am aware that there are recourses in Spain for this type of behaviour, I simply shrugged it off as an ignorant isolated remark. A brainwashed UK citizen would probably have run crying to the authorities and got the perpetrator six months! Fortunately Spain has got its priorities right. Not a great deal of ‘nanny state’ nonsense over here, I’m delighted to say. What a shame the country I love has got it all so wrong, and allowed the snowflakes and ‘wokers’ to bring it to its knees. THE world’s largest audio streaming company, Spotify, has launched five-hour aural experiences to alleviate stress for dogs while their owners are at work. ‘My Dog’s Favourite Podcast’ includes messages of comfort and reassurance (recorded by actors) such as: ‘I’d stay here and stroke you all day long if I could.’ And: ‘It makes me so happy to start the day off seeing your happy face.’ Plus: ‘You just take it easy today. This is your chance for some well-earned me time.’ Spotify is also launching a Pet Playlists feature based on a user’s musical tastes and their animal’s personality. In other words, users who say their cat is shy and withdrawn will be recommended different songs from those who say their pet is active.
Personally, someone saying: ‘You just take it easy today. This is your chance for some well-earned me time’ is not what I like to hear on podcasts, but I suppose a dog’s tastes are quite different! I’d imagine enthusiastic assurances about how ‘tasty’ their supper will be would be more effective (as long as it doesn’t sound too much like a script for a Donald Trump pep rally. Talking of whom, considering that my frying pan needs replacing, does anyone know where his Teflon coating comes from?). And another thought. Wouldn’t natural sounds make lonely dogs feel happier, rather than unfamiliar actors’ voices? A neighbour tried similar stress-alleviation videos for cats on YouTube on their moggies. After a few minutes they lost interest and sloped off in such a low energy way they could win a climate change award. I wonder what effect playing YouTube has on dogs? If you allow them on the pavements you get people with serious injuries and the drivers facing jail time. If you allow them on the roads, you get accidents and people on scooters getting killed. It’s a lose-lose situation either way. I don’t think bike lanes are a good idea either, apart from the fact that people on scooters seem set on disobeying the law. The only viable solution is a lane specific to scooters, and I can assure you tax payers don’t want to finance that! For now, the simplest resolution is to ban them completely. No need for weed EURO WEEKLY, There is an issue that needs to be addressed by all of us. Marihuana is a powerful drug that is absolutely rampant in most countries. In the UK it’s also a big problem, although maybe its consumption is more private than here in Spain. I live close to the centre of Alicante and I smell it almost every time I’m out and about. I’m not condemning the use of marihuana in any way, and I believe that it can be good for things like Parkinson’s. But there needs to be control over the use of this powerful drug. At what point did smoking marihuana become normalised? It’s not the same as smoking a cigarette and we need to remind the younger generation of this. Governments need to step their game up and put laws in place that can control the situation. In this day and age, it should be possible to stop the crime and devastation surrounding this drug. Awards season THIS week, Deborah Dugan, the former CEO of the Recording Academy, the body that oversees the Grammy Awards, filed a discrimination lawsuit against her former employer days ahead of the annual ceremony. It included allegations of gender discrimination, and corruption, casting a shadow of doubt and mistrust on the award system revered as music’s highest honour. Dugan mentions in her claims that huge worldwide artists of colour such as Beyoncé, Kanye West, and Mariah Carey, were snubbed in previous years, and that the biggest awards tend to go to rock, country, and pop artists. She then outlined how the Grammy voting process is allegedly tainted. Submissions for awards are initially voted on by members of the Academy, however, once these nominations are whittled down, the board promotes artists they have relationships with, and ‘manipulates the nominations process’ to include artists they want to perform during the ceremony. In her legal filing, Dugan blamed the ‘boys’ club’ mentality of executives as influential factors that were ultimately reflected in the voting process for annual Grammy nominations. During Dugan’s short time as CEO of the Academy, she was adamant about making changes to address public concern that the Grammys were becoming outdated and failed to showcase a more diverse pool of musicians. The Recording Academy denied the rigging accusations in a statement saying, “Spurious allegations claiming members or committees use our process to push forward nominations for artists they have relationships with are categorically false, misleading and wrong.” With shadows cast over many of these long-running awards ceremonies can they ever go back to awards for pure merit?

Little smokers
ALMOST half of the children admitted to hospital for asthma are passive smokers, according to a study conducted at the Gregorio Maraùón Hospital in Madrid. The information coincides with data given by the World Health Organisation, that states 40 per cent of children are exposed to passive smoking at home. In Spain, the prevalence of childhood asthma is estimated at around 10 per cent. Up until now, it was known that babies born of smoking mothers had diminished lung function and that children exposed to passive smoking also suffered an alteration of their lung capacity. The study analysed the situation of 365 children who, at some time between 2011 and 2015, were admitted to hospital due to an asthmatic crisis. It revealed that 41 per cent of children who had severe asthmatic crises were subjected to passive smoking at home. The average age of patients in the paediatrics ward was five and the dura-
tion of their admission was four days. Doctors observed that children exposed to smoke had lower oxygen saturation at the time of admission, as well as more severe crises and worst lung parameters. It was also noted that the asthma was more acute when the father was a smoker, compared to the mother. The information from the investigation was presented in a scientific letter, published in the journal of the Spanish Society of Paediatric Pulmonology. Doctors explain that asthma and passive smoking are a worrying combination. Children who suffer from bronchial hyperreactivity are more sensitive to environmental pollutants, including tobacco smoke, that increases airway inflammation and causes a limitation of air flow.

UNFOUNDED rumours and myths are nothing new, unlike the new technologies that help to spread them easily. Among these myths, those that relate to health can be very detrimental or even dangerous. In her new book, Doctor Esther Sanper uncovers some of the most common bad health practices. One of the biggest myths is that toothbrushes with hard bristle are more effective at removing food debris and bacteria. In fact, this is a misconception and dentists actually recommend using brushes with soft bristles. This is mostly because they don’t damage the gums and people with enamel problems or sensitive teeth are advised to use ‘extra soft’ brushes. The main issue with hard bristles is that they can end up eroding the teeth and the enamel that protects them, thus they are only recommended to clean dentures. Another potentially harmful practice is thawing food at room temperature. It’s very common to take food out of the freezer in advance and leaving it to defrost on the kitchen counter. However, this habit is discouraged as it increases the chances of suffering food poisoning. To avoid the multiplication of bacteria, it’s encouraged to place the food in the fridge, on the shelf closest to the freezer. Although it is more time consuming, the cool temperatures will prevent any bacteria from reproducing. If time is tight, the food can be defrosted in cold water for 30 to 60 minutes or cooked directly. Another classic is the highly publicised myth that states you can contract an STD from sitting on a public toilet. Uncomfortable squatting or copious amounts of toilet paper are unnecessary and absurd measures. For starters, public toilets are cleaned much more frequently than other things we touch daily, including our phones. But it’s also worth noting that the areas that come
into contact with a toilet bowl are minimal. Unless there are wounds on the skin, the risk is practically zero. To further prove this point, bacteria viruses that cause sexually transmitted
diseases don’t survive for very long outside of the body. The microorganisms that cause herpes, chlamydia or gonorrhoea only survive 10 seconds outside of the human body.

Just glory MALAGA’S favourite son Antonio Banderas won the award for his interpretation of Pedro Almodóvar’s alter ego in ‘Dolor y Gloria’ at the Goya film awards on Saturday. Costa actress ACTRESS Belén Cuesta has won the award for Best Leading Actress for her role as Rosa in ‘La Trinchera Infinita.’ In the film the actress gives life to Rosa, a ‘mole’ during the Franco regime that has to live hidden, trapped in her own home when her husband is captured by the Guardia Civil. It is the actress's third nomination and her first Goya Award. Cuesta took to the stage brimming with both excitement and pride, especially for having received the award in her hometown, Malaga. Although born in Sevilla, her childhood and adolescence were spent in the coastal town of Fuengirola. She trained as an actress at the Cimera d’Arte Drama School in Malaga, in addition to receiving classes in interpretation from other schools. On accepting the award she thanked her classmates: Penelope Cruz, Greta Fernández and Marta Nieto. THE sinister streets of Victorian London are coming to Roquetas de Mar with hit show, Jekyll & Hyde, the musical at the Teatro Auditorio. Loosely based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel the ‘Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde,’ this award-winning musical horror-drama debuted on Broadway in 1997. Since then there have been numerous international productions, including two tours in the UK, a revamped tour of the US eight years ago and a Broadway revival in 2013.
The Spanish version features some songs which did not appear in the original and different staging. The idea was to create a more dramatic, menacing atmosphere, the result of the special effects, 150 costumes, clever lighting and distinctive sound resulting in a production which while remaining faithful in many ways to the original is also distinctly avante-garde. The Roquetas shows are on Friday Febuary 7 and Saturday February 8 at 9.30pm and at 6pm on Sunday February 9.

A SERIES of big name acts are lined up for performances at Adra’s Centro Cultural over the coming months. First up is the Chinese Acrobatic Circus on February 27, Adra mayor Manuel Cortes and Culture councillor Elisa Fernandez revealed at a presentation of the preliminary municipal entertainment programme for the next three months. The ‘Shanghai Circus World’ show at the municipal centre will feature 30 artists, and promises contortionists and acrobats performing astonishing feats. Malaga singer Diana Navarro will be in town on March 7 as part of her ‘Gira Inesperado’ tour. Expect a unique fusion of copla, flamenco and zarzuela along with styles ranging from symphonic to electronic as she belts out original compositions in her impressive voice. The big show in April will be a two-hour tribute to the late, great singer and actress Rocio Jurado on the night of the 18th.

Real fast Food MANY people get a certain image in their head when they hear the term ‘Fast Food.’ A burger, Chinese take away, chips, kebabs. They are deemed ‘Fast’ because the only time and effort you’ve had to make was ordering it or waiting for it to be delivered. This week I fancied something fast. I set myself the challenge of cooking two tapas dishes in five minutes. Add in the two minutes of preparation and I had two delicious dishes on the table for lunch in a total of about seven minutes. Gambas (Prawns) Al Ajillo and Padron Peppers made a very tasty lunch. Have ready two garlic cloves chopped, a red chilli deseeded and chopped and some parsley finely chopped. Put the peppers in a small bowl and cover with water. That’s it, the prep is done. Get two pans on a high heat, when hot add olive oil to both pans. Take the peppers out of the water and shake excess water off, put carefully in the
pan, they will spit a bit, but it’s the dampness of the peppers that will make them blister. Put the garlic and chilli in the other pan, leave a minute then add the whole prawns. A minute or two on each side, sprinkle in the parsley and remove to your serving dish. Cover with the juices from the pan. The peppers are ready when they have started to collapse in the middle. Sprinkle both dishes with sea salt. Enjoy!

Firefighters from the Consorcio del Levante Almeriense had to cut one of the victims out of the car. An emergency medical team applied CPR to one person, but were unable to save their life.

Arsenal Still Have FA Cup Insight ARSENAL’S youngsters led the side to an impressive 2-1 victory over Bournemouth in the fourth round of the FA Cup, setting up a tie with Portsmouth on the week commencing March 2. Eighteen-year-old Bukayo Saka lashed the Gunners into an early lead as he found space on the left-hand side of the box, before sending a thunderous strike through the fingertips of Mark Travers and into the roof of the Cherries net. A quick turn of pace saw Joe Willock go through one-on-one with the Bournemouth shotstopper, but the angle proved too tight for the youngster, who poked his effort into Travers’ midriff. The home side’s reprieve didn’t last long,

Howe’s worries were compounded by the strength of the lineup he fielded. This was an experienced group of players, yet they looked like rabbits in headlights against Mikel Arteta’s youthful Gunners team. There’s clearly some cause for concern. Nevertheless, this was an FA Cup fixture, and it’s plainly obvious which competition Bournemouth are prioritising. Several stars will be restored to the side once Premier League action resumes. That’ll give Howe a better chance to assess where his team are at mentally.
Billic knocks out his old Club West Ham IT was an afternoon to cherish for Slaven Bilic as his West Brom side claimed the first Premier League scalp of the FA Cup fourth round weekend, beating former employers West Ham 1-0 at the London Stadium. The Baggies had several early chances before they took an early ninth minute
lead. Issa Diop failed to clear his lines and the ball fell to left-back Conor Townsend, whose rasping 20-yard strike from the edge of the box sailed past Darren Randolph into the far right corner. Charlie Austin should have made it two for the energetic visitors before the interval, but he glanced a header wide from six yards despite being left unmarked. West Ham were sloppy, lacked creativity and failed to muster a shot on goal in the first half - Declan Rice’s long-range efforts all they could come up with. The Hammers made a triple change at half-time
and fared slightly better after the break, thanks to the sense of urgency brought by Michail Antonio. The visitors offered further hope that West Ham could get back into the game, after Semi Ajayi was given his marching orders for two yellows with just under 20 minutes remaining. But Manuel Lanzini and Mark Noble failed to capitalise on opportunities late on - the Hammers captain guilty of blazing over from 12 yards out - and West Brom saw the game out to hand Bilic a well earned win against the side that sacked him in late 2017. Even after Antonio’s introduction, the Baggies were largely comfortable in dealing with the limited
attacking threat posed by West Ham. West Ham fans really have had enough now, they want the board out as well as the new current manager already. Out of all cups and heading to relegation whilst hard core fans continue to organise demonstrations - moved from their spiritual home on the promise of top flight football - now playing in a soulless bowl and scrapping to stay in the premiership.
