This is positive news for UK nationals who are resident in Spain, as the Withdrawal Agreement contains some really important protections for your rights: • You will be able to continue to live and work in Spain • UK state pensioners will continue to have lifelong healthcare as long as they remain living in Spain. This also applies to residents who claim a UK state pension in the future • Your UK state pension will continue to be uprated • You will be able to exchange your driving licence until the end of 2020 without taking a driving test and your Spanish licence will be accepted in the UK when you visit. Nurse Maise, said the microscope and ultrasound machine, worth a combined €23,000, will benefit both patients and nursing staff immeasurably, and thanked the charity, its volunteers and donors. Explaining how chemotherapy can make it difficult to find patients’ veins, Nurse Maise said the ultrasound machine allows nurses to do just this quickly and painlessly. The machine can reach up to 8 cm in depth, and so has immense possibilities. “We are very, very happy that Cancer Care Javea has provided us with these pieces of equipment. The ultrasound machine is the best option for this purpose, and we are going to use it a lot, most definitely.” The charity also purchased special creams to treat skin affected by

She said: “This room will be available to both MABS and Cancer Care Javea patients who are unable to leave hospital and go directly home, due to further care requirements. “The room was previously only funded by MABS but Cancer Care Javea agreed to pay half towards the yearly rental.” The charity has two shops in Javea, holds regular fundraising activities and receives generous donations to help them continue their valuable work. “Despite most of our volunteers being British expats, we aim to help anyone from any nationality and we welcome you to call in to our shops or telephone us on the numbers provided. “Our services are not restricted to Javea alone; we work in the surrounding regions of Alicante and Valencia,” added Janette. Dogs shot ALICANTE’S High Court confirmed seven-and-a-half-month prison terms for two hunters in Murla who shot two Brittany dogs that were household pets. One dog died and the other survived and the men, aged 78 and 74, deliberately attacked them with ‘predatory intent’ as the shooting was not accidental, the court ruled.
Beach outlay CAMPELLO will spend €245,000 on the town’s 23 kilometres of beaches and coves this year, principally on improvements and additions to infrastructure and services. Replacing beach walkways and installing buoys in swimming zones will account for €50,000 and €8,000 respectively while the lifeguard service will rise to €186,000.
Cash needed VILLAJOYOSA is challenging a €15,000 allocation from the provincial council for rehabilitating the Roman baths. The remains are one of the town’s largest and most important urban archaeological sites, said mayor Andreu Verdu, and the council should be prepared to meet at least half of the €400,000 cost.

TRIBUTE TO HOLOCAUST VICTIMS A TRIBUTE to the victims of the Holocaust was held at Alicante’s Seneca building on Tuesday, January 28, with a clear message that society should lear n from the horrors of the past. On the day on which the General Assembly of the United Nations officially proclaimed the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust, the City Hall sounded sirens before a minute of silence. This was followed by an emotional performance in collabora-
tion with the Oscar Esplá Higher Conservatory of Music. Mayor, Luis Barcala, wanted to remember “the six million people of any condition, age, sexual tendency or belief who were simply and vilely killed in one of the most dramatic episodes of our contemporary history as Europeans.” He added: “Unfortunately, there are people or countries that suffer that unjustified hatred today. Let us denounce any attempt to break the coexistence between human beings, let’s fight against totalitarian ideas, clearly and emphatically.”
The councillor for Culture, Antonio Manresa, also spoke of the need to learn from the past. “There are no words to express the horror, but we must look for them because we do not want to forget that terrible episode in the history of Europe, so that it never returns to repeat itself. “ An exhibition ‘In Memory’ will be in place in the Seneca building until February 27, organised by Alicante Council’s Department of Historical Memory. Parents help others ‘ New mum’ held KIRSTY MAXWELL’S parents plan to help families having to cope with foreign legal and police systems after a death abroad. Denise and Brian Curry’s 27-year-old daughter Kirsty plunged to her death from a 10th floor Benidorm apartment only hours after arriving at the popular resort with a hen party in April 2017. The couple, who have fought to clarify the circumstances of their daughter’s inexplicable death fall, have now set up a charity kirstymaxwellcharity.co.uk to help others who are faced with having to deal with a death in a foreign country. Lack of help not only exacerbated their grief, they said, but with more assistance they might have known how to exert pressure instead of missing opportunities in what they have called the ‘shambolic’ Spanish police investigation into Kirsty’s death.

A 35-YEAR-OLD woman has been arrested for allegedly abandoning her newborn baby on a porch in Alicante. The child was left with its umbilical cord attached in various layers of clothing. The newborn, found by a local walking his dog at 4.30pm on January 17, was in good health and unharmed. Police said it was shocking that no witnesses had come forward considering the area is a busy pedestrian thoroughfare near Plaza Nueva in the city centre. Upon analysing security cameras in the area, they managed to gather images, potentially identifying the woman. The suspected woman has four daughters and appears to have hidden her pregnancy. She reportedly gave birth to the child in a bathtub alone. Due to her economic situation and lack of knowledge of adoption procedures, she decided to abandon the child. She will appear at Orihuela court charged with child abandonment.

Could be third time lucky VILLAJOYOSA Town Hall will try, for the third time, to sell almost 8,000-square metres of beachfront building land. The site of a former residence for BBVA bank employees overlooking the Paradis beach has a reserve price of €3.09 million that failed to attract buyers in 2016. A second attempt in 2017, with the price reduced to €2.8 million, attracted three offers, all of which fell through. The residence was demolished in 2012 and the site’s owners, Taylor Wimpey, intended to construct 40 apartments in exchange for building a promenade, cycle lane and widening the former main road. Instead, Taylor Wimpey and the then-town hall came to a different agreement in 2013 and the plot on the Paradis beach became municipal property.

Official advice taken THERE has been a 1,163 upsurge in the number of residents on Benidorm’s Padron. A total of 811 Britons living in Benidorm registered between January and November in 2019, which municipal sources attributed to Brexit. As the UK prepares to shut the door on Europe at the end of this month, many British residents have taken the insistent advice of the British Embassy and Consulate and registered on the municipal Padron in order to retain the same rights as before. The introduction of parking permits for several Benidorm neighbourhoods has also prompted residents of all nationalities to register, as permits are issued only to those who appear on the Padron. Benidorm now has an official population of 68,721 although the town hall hopes eventually to increase this to 75,000, a figure that will put it in line for more cash from the central government in Madrid.

Marina Baja hospital strapped ex-soldier to bed DIANNE WINTERBURN and her husband John had a “holiday from hell” after he fell at their Benidorm hotel. John, an ex-soldier who in the past had a quadruple heart bypass, was taken to the Marina Baja hospital. Although his speech was slurred, her husband was in good spirits, Dianne later told the Yorkshire Evening Post but once in hospital,
he was strapped to his bed and made to wear a nappy for no obvious reason. “I couldn’t believe it when I went to see him,” she said, adding that he was given a drug only prescribed for psychotic patients. “How degrading was this for him?” she asked. “It was disgusting.” Worse was to come as the couple found that only Dianne had travel insurance and for
10 days she had to run up huge taxi bills, travelling to and from the hospital. Finally, their son Craig flew out to help them return home where John was taken first to Leeds General Infirmary and later to St James hospital where is slowly recovering. “But please everyone, do not fly to Spain without the right travel insurance or you could end up like John did,” Dianne warned.
Tough ‘booze’ line BRITISH owners of Benidorm businesses backed calls for a crackdown on drunken tourists. They applauded Mallorca’s recently-announced measures that include €60,000 fines for ‘balconing’ and limits to drinks on all-inclusive holiday packages. “This is a step in the right direction,” declared Karen Maling Cowles, president of the Benidorm British Business Association. “I totally agree with what they’re doing in places like Magaluf and would like to see something similar here,” she said.

Soaring population A RECORD number of people currently live in El Campello, according to official data from the town hall. As of December 31, 2019, a total of 28,349 inhabitants were registered, a record in the history of the town. The growing population is accredited to ‘the growth of vegetation and the increasing interest of foreigners to settle in El Campello’ which is just 12km from Alicante City. Mayor Juanjo Berenguer said: “These figures confirm that we are the ideal place to live, with good temperature and quality of life, good safety levels and enviable public services.” The population is made up of 23,730 Spaniards and 4,619 foreigners (16.3 per cent), with a reported ‘significant growth in the latter.’ However, during the summer period, the population triples, reaching

The regular price from Denia to Valencia is still €11.50 excluding any of the occasional discounts - and to Alicante, €11.80. From Javea it’s €12.45 and €10.55 respectively. The company increased these prices in the middle of last year by 1.5 per cent. But now, the savings on the AP7 is not reflected, claims a report by the Court of Defence of Competition. It states that the elimination of tolls has ‘simply brought a benefit for the

company but not for the passenger.’ According to Spanish press reports, Alsa responded by saying it has ‘strug-
gled’ but endeavoured to provide at least the main towns in the region with more direct services to the big cities.
Safe after the storm STORMS Gloria and DANA both took their toll on the Cristóbal Zaragoza Municipal Library in Denia, but the council has reassured users the building is safe despite flooding issues. The main area affected is the building’s new staircase and the assembly hall, the usual rehearsal room for the Art Teatro theatre group, which was flooded. Water entered mainly through the staircase, gathering at the basement, where the theatre hall is located. It was closed until the problem was solved. The new staircase was built in 2010 with money from the Generalitat’s Confiaza Plan, with which €683,000 was invested in the remodelling of the Municipal Library. But council officials fear the work was carried out ‘without taking into account
the correct insulation of the walls.’ Councillor for Education and Library, Xente Sebastià, visited the facilities to monitor the state of the building. He said: “The water filtration has been caused by the lack of waterproofing in the back of the walls that make up the staircase, which, when the water falls on them, allows the water to enter the interior. Once the water is inside the walls, by gravity, it ends up in the basement, precisely in the room where the theatre is located,” he explained. “Those who wish to can come and study without any problem and without danger. “The town hall has requested a report on what needs to be done to resolve the problem permanently.”

The Irish question remains DESPITE assurances from Prime Minister Boris Johnson that there will be no check points for goods in Northern Ireland, the European Union has produced a map showing examples of where they should be! In essence, goods being sent from British ports to Belfast will be subject to EU rules and will need to be checked by British customs and the same will be true of goods coming from Northern Ireland to the UK. Meanwhile in an interview with WITH the avowed intention of making Britain a ‘global science superpower’ top scientists, researchers and mathematicians will be granted fast-tracked entry to the UK after Brexit. The decision was announced by Boris Johnson as he invited the ‘most talented minds in the world’ to make their way to the UK. The current ‘Global Talent’ visa which will have no limits to the

Whilst some academics have welcomed the move, the Liberal Democrats have called it a ‘marketing gimmick’ saying that the old visa system had never hit its limit.

He went on to confirm that it was clear in the agreement with the EU that there will have to be some checks on goods being transported between the UK mainland and Northern Ireland. Although there is to be a general election in Ireland on February 8, Mr Varadkar is quite buoyant about being re-elected and being involved in ongoing trade negotiations and is meeting EU negotiator Michel Barnier in Dublin. Mr Varadkar believes that the British prime minster is greatly mistaken in believing that a trade deal will be possible to agree during 2020 and sees it taking longer. He explained that Europe is in the driving seat with a population of 450 million people and 27 countries against the UK and 60 million and therefore as in the FA Cup, the EU will field a much stronger team.

Body found in the rubble THE lifeless body of a 75-yearold woman was recovered from the rubble of a collapsed building in Alcoy. A landslide destroyed part of apartment blocks 8 and 10 in Calle Sant Agusti at around 10am last Wednesday morning, January 22. Emergency services were called and after locating one of the tenants, a dog patrol was brought in, finally discovering the body of the woman who lived on the fourth floor of the number 8 building. The family of the victim, who has not been named, received psychological care. The property is owned by several owners, including the victim, and number 10 by a single person. Declaration of overseas assets Expatriates living in Spain who are considered Tax Residents are required to submit Form 720 to the tax authorities listing assets held overseas if their value amounts to €50,000 or more in certain categories. There are three groups which are relevant and you only need submit the declaration for any group where your assets exceed the €50,000 limit. THE three groups are: • Bank Accounts which are already open, or for which you are already an account holder during the year which corresponds to the declaration. The valuation should be based on whichever is the highest the balance as at December 31 or the average balance for the last quarter of the year. • All types of financial assets which includes information on securities, assets, shares or amounts representing the capital stock of all types of companies, or the transfer of capital to third parties held abroad, as well as life insurances for which the individual is the beneficiary and annuities or temporary income of which they are the beneficiary. The valuation should be based on the value on December 31 of the year being declared. • Real estate of all types

A NEW facility for higher education students and young people in Gandia is a month away from opening. Work is reportedly progressing well on the future Casal Jove del Grau, located in the university residence hall at Gandia’s UPV. The 270 sqm space will provide students and other young people in the neighbourhood, with a space of their own where various activities and initiatives can be held. The municipal government has invested around €120,000 in the project.

Green schemes ALMOST 100 native trees of a variety of species have been planted in an Alcoy neighbourhood to enhance the local environment. The council has completed the repopulation scheme in Calle Doña, having first pruned the existing olive trees and white pines, which have been conserved. The selected species were integrated, both for their esthetic appeal and their suitability to the soil. In total, 95 trees have been planted, made up of linden, larch, pine, ash, Valencian oak, sorbus and ivory varieties, combining deciduous and evergreen species. AFTER six years searching for the perfect location, MABS Cancer Support Foundation has relocated its Costa Blanca shop in La Cala to a new set up in Alfaz del Pi, and last week held a coffee morning to recruit volunteers to help run it. Welcoming more than 20 people to the spacious, two-storey charity shop and support centre in Avenida Pais Valenciana, MABS Founder and President, Jacqui Phillips MBE, said: “Today is all about getting new volunteers so
that we can continue helping and supporting anybody with cancer.” Jacqui set up the charity almost 22 years ago after finding herself with nowhere to turn to having been diagnosed with breast and throat cancer. Volunteers provide practical help and support to people who have been diagnosed with cancer, as well as providing transport and a translation service where needed. She told Euro Weekly News: “When I was diagnosed there was nobody

We’re really happy with the turn out today, there are some old faces and plenty of new ones too, hopefully they will sign up.” Shop manager, Sheila Fearon, added: “It has been hard going getting the shop up and running but worth it. Fundraiser for fiestas THE community of Finestrat held a fundraiser at the weekend to raise cash for the town’s August fiestas yet. Residents and visitors gathered at Plaza La Torreta de Finestrat to enjoy the festival of Sant Antoni del Porquet, the first event of the town’s calendar during which an auction was held. Organised by the Llampuga Comissió 2020, with the support of the Department of Large Public Parties, the fundraiser began the blessing of animals by the parish priest, D Vicent Castaño. Councillor for Fiestas, Héctor Baldó, thanked for the massive attendance and support, and congratulated the Llampuga “for the organisation of this event that was postponed last weekend because of the storm.” It’s not yet known how much was raised.

Last December, the first phase of the project began with the whole network identified and mapped. Drive through ITV THE mobile ITV vehicle campaign 2020 has been launched in EL Campello. As announced by the Department of Public Safety and Traffic, led by Rafa Galvañ (PP), the mobile unit means that anybody whose vehicle needs the compulsory technical inspection only has to go as far as the EL Mesell Industrial Estate between now and February 29. Law of dependency ALMOST 40 people attended an informative talk on the Law of Dependency given by social worker. Ángela Seva, and hosted by the Third Age at La Casilla senior centre in La Nucia. Some of the basic issues as well as general and particular requirements necessary when applying for dependency recognition were discussed.
While representatives from the departments of Senior Citizens and Social Welfare, who organised the talk, outlined the legal processes, resources and services available. These consist of financial aid, home help, day centres, telecare etc. After the talk earlier this month, those present were given a chance to look around the centre, see first-
hand the facilities as well as meet the occupational therapists, nurses, doctors and socio-cultural technicians. The centre boasts a gym, rehabilitation room, multifunctional TV room, meeting room, among other facilities. It is open from 8am to 8pm and has a public transport service for those registered in La Nucia.
Replacing a lost or expired British passport from Spain W I T H B re x i t p o s s i b l y a ro u n d t h e c o r n e r, i f y o u h a v e l e s s than six months life left on your passport it would be a good idea to renew sooner rather than later. Quite often when different official forms are digitalised, it becomes more rather than less confusing and you need to have a degree in programming in order to proceed. For once however, the British government has made things much easier and far less complicated in applying for a replacement passport if yours has been lost or is about to expire. No longer do you need to supply lots of forms including birth certificates and to have a photograph physically signed on the back by someone who knows you and it really is now quite easy if you have access to a computer. Very simply visit https://www.gov. uk/overseas-passports and you’re taken through the whole process step by step and the only drawback is that there isn’t a single page detailing everything including costs as you have to go through a page at a time. There is however a passports link which does give quite a lot of information on the website, but not everything. Even if you have lost or had your passport stolen, you are not precluded for applying online for a replacement, but you have to declare it lost in advance also online. As a real bonus you can now use digital photograph and there are quite explicit rules about what is acceptable as you navigate the website and whilst it may take a couple of attempts, provided you remove any glasses and stand in front of a
white background, a selfie taken with a phone will probably work ok. If you are not happy using a phone camera, then most towns have at least one print shop where they can photograph you and give you a digital image on a memory stick or card. As you progress through the procedure you will be best served by having access to details of your previous passport, but it isn’t actually essential and the site does report back to a human in the UK who can check. When you post your photograph, you will be asked to give details (including email address) of a person of standing who can confirm that they know you and that the photograph is of you. The whole process can take up to six weeks from start to finish and this will include delivery via courier to your address in Spain and you have to pay with a debit or credit card for the cost of the passport (depends upon number of pages) and courier fee at the time of submitting the application online. You will be sent a special code which will allow you to track your passport through all of its stages. In the event that you have lost your passport and need a temporary replacement, that can also be done online. It is more expensive than a normal passport, is usually good for one round trip only and will normally be issued by the British Consulate in Malaga. For those without computers, it is still possible to apply through the post and there are even different shops with English-speaking staff scattered around Spain where for a fee they will help you complete the forms and send them off for you.

Register de facto unions in the Valencian Community As there are benefits for Inheritance Tax that step, there are still certain opportunities within parts of Spain. A de facto union of an unmarried couple can be defined as that sentimental relationship between two
persons of legal age or two emancipated minors and is similar to marriage, in the sense that there is a marital coexistence and intention to remain, but the relationship has not been confirmed by complying with the legal and registration formalities required for the marriage. Such unions are not expressly defined in Spanish national law, but some administrative regions of the country have passed regulations with different legal observations in order to try to legally assimilate some of the marriage rights into de facto unions. How can such a union be formalised or registered? In the case of the Valencian Community, only de facto unions registered in the appropriate Administrative Registry of the Valencian Community are considered valid and can only be entered into by two persons of legal age or emancipated minors, who are not married
to another person or maintain a sentimental bond with another person and are not relatives in a straight line, or related by second grade (such as siblings). In addition, at least one of the two must have the status of being a resident of any municipality within the Valencian Community. To access the registry, a registration application must be submitted, which will be accompanied by the padron certificates of the applicants together with other appropriate documents. If the documentation submitted is correct, the official responsible will confirm a day and time in which the interested parties must appear personally before the Administration in order to formalise and record the union. The administration has a
period of three months following the interview to either accept the application or reject it. Assuming that it is accepted, the union will be recorded in the Registry and those so recognised will be able to enjoy the rights granted by the law in this regard. What rights do the members of de facto unions have? As mentioned above, each Autonomous Community recognises de facto unions, according to its own criteria and in the Valencian Community, the effects of the union are regulated in article 15 of Law 5/2012, which tries to ensure that de facto unions enjoy similar conditions to those granted to married couples in certain areas, with one of the most important being the right to obtain public aid.
It also should be similar for tax purposes which fall within the competence of the Autonomous Community. For example, in the case of Inheritance Tax, the deceased’s partner could enjoy the same tax benefit as a widowed spouse, which is currently €100,000 before tax is levied. The law also speaks of the right to receive widows’ pensions, although in this case it depends upon the specific pension regulations of the State. A smart health move NEXT spring sees the i n t ro d u c t i o n of Benidorm’s Protection and Smart Technical Tourist Attention (PATTI) scheme. Benidorm’s mayor Toni Perez announced the project at the FITUR tourism trade fair in Madrid where he introduced the scheme to Spain’s Tourism minister, Reyes Maroto. Perez explained that the health assistance initiative is particularly directed at elderly tourists with a chronic illness, those wanting round-the-clock communication with a health centre or simply wishing to ensure that they are not alone while on holiday. The scheme, expected to begin operating in the spring, will provide greater

BENIDORM residents Ana and Edgar were snowed in after Storm Gloria brought a metre of snow to their Mariola home. “On the Sunday we went to Bocairent for bread, but the supermarket was closed so we went to the Camping Mariola shop,” they told the local Spanish media.
That was their last contact with the outside world until firefighters and Guardia Civil officers on skis brought them two sacks of food the following Tuesday night. The couple had moved to Sierra Mariola near the Pinatell urbanisation two weeks previously but although they knew bad weather was
coming, nothing prepared them for hurricane-force winds and blizzards. They were frightened, she admitted, owing to patchy mobile coverage, but stayed warm at the fireside. Thanks to a generator they also had light, unlike the neighbouring urbanisation which had no electricity after pylons were blown down.

Benidorm Lower emissions EIGHT Alicante Province municipalities have been ordered to create ‘low emission zones,’ Benidorm one of them. Spokeswoman for the central government in Madrid, Nadia Calviño, announced the measure, which applies all over Spain, after the last Cabinet meeting. Ministers approved a Declaration of Climate and Environmental Emergency, committing the government to 30 priority measures, five of them during the first 100 days of Pedro Sanchez’s new government. Municipalities with populations of more than 50,000 must take steps to reduce emissions.
Protected from worst FIVE days after Storm Gloria blew itself out, Benidorm’s seafront had returned to normal. Waves whipped up by the storm had covered the Levante and Poniente beaches as far as their promenades but receded once the storm remitted, thanks to the currents on this part of the coast, Beaches councillor Monica Gomez explained. The beaches’ orientation also contributed to their quick recovery, the councillor said, as both face south and Storm Gloria did little damage inside the town. The Sierra Helada also bore the brunt of the wind and rain, protecting the town and its beaches Gomez added.

Given what they want THE dogs-allowed Benican zone adjoining the Foietes park has been extended to include a canine agility course. The Benican zone is now four times larger, after residents in the nearby Colonia Madrid requested part of Benidorm’s 2020 Budget should be given to this. Other suggestions are still being assessed, said Citizens’ Participation councillor Ana Pellicer at a working meeting held in Colonia, Madrid just before inspecting work carried out in recent months. Also present were Public Works councillor Jose Ra-
mon Gonzalez de Zarate and Teresa Garrido and Manuel Sanchez Notario who were there to represent the neighbourhood’s Residents’ Associations. “We implement everything the residents ask us to do,” De Zarate declared, detailing the work carried out by municipal employees or concessionary companies contracted by the town hall.” The town hall solved problems caused by loose paving stones and cracks caused by the settling of an embankment in Foietes park as well as controlling traffic with speed bumps.

Albir - Alfaz NEWS Retracing Albir’s past THE first of the free walks organised for young people from Alfaz, Altea and Polop took place last weekend. Organised by the Youth departments of each municipality, all the chosen routes will illustrate the culture, history and roots of the three towns involved. The Albir conducted tour was led by Richard Barreno from Alfaz’s town hall who, before they set out, explained what the participants would see on their way to the Lighthouse inside Sierra Helada national park. This included 100,000-year-old fossilised dunes, the ochre mine that was still worked in the 19th century and the Bombarda tower, part of the coast’s 16th century defence system against pirate attacks.

Back to normal IN the five days of Storm Gloria and its aftermath, Alfaz’s Local Police was called out 122 times. The town hall’s Technical Services department were even busier, as they were needed on 143 occasions as the virulent storm buffeted Albir, Alfaz and the entire Costa Blanca. Summing up after, town hall spokesman Toni Such applauded the efficiency and coordination of the Security Forces, Proteccion Civil, Technical Services, the SAV streetcleaning service and water supply company, Hidraqua. “I don’t want to leave anybody out, they all worked untiringly from the early hours of Sunday morning until the following Friday to repair storm damage,” Such said.
Thanks to Alfaz’s Flood Plan, all those involved were able to work more proficiently, the spokesman explained. “This identifies the places where water is likely to accumulate in emergency situations like those of the past few days,” he said. “It was a period of intense work with incidents throughout the town requiring removal of fallen branches, collapsed walls and rocks from roads and private property on the seafront, inside the town and out in the countryside,” Such continued. The effects of the storm were particularly dramatic on the Albir seafront, he said, with rocks and pebbles flung onto roads and the promenades and even as far as shops and bars.
Playing the game(s) ALFAZ Town Hall’s Youth department has acquired new board games organised by the Youth Information Centre (CIJA). A workshop for the 12 to 35 age group is held each Friday between 5pm and 8pm at the multipurpose room at the Hogar del Pensionista, said Youth councillor Laura Sevilla. As this is more and more in demand amongst Alfaz’s young people, her department has extended its supply of games with new acquisitions after first consulting the CICA users. These include classic games like Cluedo, Risk, Party & Co, chess and Parchis similar to Ludo - along with newer ones like Imploding Kittens, Dixit, Secret Code, Seven Wonders and Black Stories. These will supplement those already in use each Friday, which include Trivial Pursuit, Carcassonne, Jungle Speed and The Gathering. The CIJA initiative, which is free of charge, sets out to promote healthy fun by encouraging participation amongst Alfaz’s young people and helping them to make new friends via the board games, Sevilla said. “Any young person interested in taking part can sign up at the CIJA but places are limited,” she added.

Although this is only the Time Trial’s second edition, the race is now established on the Alicante Province BTT mountain bike circuit, said Alfaz’s Sports councillor Oscar Perez. This year’s Cronoescalada included eight different, and spectacular heats, with the prizes being later presented by Spanish cross-country mountain biker Sergio Mantecon who competed in the 2012 Olympics. Supporting role in series SPANISH television series Paraiso will be partly filmed in Albir and Alfaz, production company Globomedia revealed. Not only Alfaz but also Benidorm, Altea, Calpe, Javea and Santa Pola have been chosen as Alicante Province locations. Other sequences will be shot at the Albufera freshwater lake near Valencia City as well as in Oliva, Sueca and Requena amongst other municipalities. The Movistar+ series will be directed by Fernando Gonzalo Molina whose films include Palmeras en la nieve (Palm trees in the Snow) and Tres metros sobre el cielo (Three metres above the sky). The series stars Macarena Garcia, who won a Goya award - Spain’s equivalent of an Oscar - for Best New-
comer Actress for her role in Blancanieves (Snow White). Filming in the province is expected to take approximately 15 weeks, with scenes shot in the Sierra Helada national park and inside Alfaz. The mystery-adventure series set in Spain in 1992 will have seven 50minute episodes and is due to air later this year. This will not be Alfaz’s first time as a film location, as Luis Gamboa shot his film, La Estatua (The Statue) in Alfaz in 1956. Juan Luis Iborra, director of Alfaz’s annual Film Festival, chose Alfaz for Tiempos de Azucar (Sugar Times) in 2001 and shot some scenes there for his 1997 film. Alfaz was also used for some location scenes for the comedy, My Big Fat Greek Wedding.
Art at the Casa de Cultura THE Belgian artist Frans Vogels is currently exhibiting his work at the Casa de Cultura in Alfaz. Born in 1963, Vogels is self-taught and defines his style, which ranges from realism to the abstract, as “hilarious.” Vogels has also explained that his art has been inspired by the late Herman Brood, the Dutch musician, actor and poet who later embarked on a successful career as a painter. The exhibition can be visited until Tuesday, February 11.
ALFAZ Town Hall’s Health department recently urged the local population to become blood donors. Alicante’s Transfusions Centre urgently needs to improve the stocks in its blood bank, explained Health councillor Marisa Cortes, who called on habitual and potential donors to attend local sessions. To donate it is necessary to be aged between 18 and 65, weigh more than 50 kilos and be in good health. Women may give blood three times a year, and men four times. Anybody who lived continuously in the UK for a minimum of one year between 1980 and 1996 will not be eligible to donate in Spain.
Ideal setting ALFAZ presented its Welcome l’Alfas brand and this year’s Film Festival poster at the Fitur tourist trade fair in Madrid. Alfaz’s mayor Vicente Arques explained that the Welcome l’Alfas initiative is based on sustainable and healthful urban development in a municipality where 52 per cent of the population come from 102 different countries and live in a town with an incalculable natural heritage. Fitur also provided the ideal occasion for presenting the poster publicising Alfaz’s Film Festival, converting the Madrid tourism fair as the first official event in the festival’s 32nd edition, Arques said. “This is the ideal setting for it,” the mayor added.

But this was still the worst weather experienced in many years, Public Safety councillor Diego Zaragozi declared, leaving considerable damage to be repaired, fallen trees removed and promenades to be cleared of debris. “The sea was especially virulent,” he added. Eight-metre waves with winds averaging 83.5 kilometres an hour and gusts of 132 kilometres left the seafront and beaches in a condition that locals had never witnessed, Zaragozi said. Municipal employees worked double shifts to return the town to normal, clearing the Paseo Maritimo promenade and roads so that residents and vehicles were able to leave their homes, the councillor added. With the help of the fire brigade, Proteccion Civil, the Local Police and power company Iberdrola, the town hall had been able to solve the most pressing problems once the storm had died down, the councillor explained.
ALTEA’S Local Police has acquired another drone. This will increase and improve their capacity for surveillance and inspection, said Miguel de la Hoz, councillor for the town hall’s Traffic and Public Safety departments. The Local Police’s existing drone was equipped with a 20-megapixel camera but could not be used at night, De la Hoz explained, while one of the new drone’s two cameras has thermal vision. “Thanks to this we can monitor traffic, suspicious situations and crimes as well as assist during emergencies or rescue operations at all times,” the councillor said. The Local Police are also
organising a course for using drones. “We have two drones now and need at least one pilot on duty for each shift,” De la Hoz said. “Until now we have had four qualified officers and we are organising this course because that isn’t enough.” This will be held at the Local Police headquarters in Altea from March 2-8 and with six officers signed up for the 72-hour course, the local force will soon have 10 drone pilots. The course, which is open to other Local Police forces as well as members of the public, costs €750 for officers belonging to Spain’s security courses and €900 for others.

Counting the cost ACCORDING to initial estimates, Storm Gloria caused €1.34 million to the La Foss beach alone. Calpe’s Governing Board, meeting once the storm had abated, asked the regional government and the national government in Madrid to add the municipality to those listed
as disaster areas. Calpe also asked both administrations to make funds available for repairs at the La Fossa beach. Municipal technicians are assessing the damage to the remainder of the town’s coastline and hope by next week to have arrived at a definite amount, explained local
mayor, Ana Sala. The La Fossa promenade was badly affected with paving stones that were cracked or wrenched loose by pounding waves. Other sections of the promenade collapsed after retaining walls were damaged. Litter bins, foot showers,
steps and ramps were wrecked, and the Tourist Information hut completely destroyed while several palm trees were blown down. Although affected by the storm, the Arenal beach suffered less than La Fossa and damage was limited to

Introduction to the theatre CALPE’S Culture department launched Anem a l’Auditori (Let’s go to the Auditorium), a cycle of children’s plays. Each month there will be a different play whose
theme echoes a designated day or event. The date of next month’s play, Oscar the Sleeping Child, on February 15, coincides with International Childhood Cancer Day.
This performance, organised by the Culture and Youth departments, is also part of Calpe’s Family Day programme. The plays are all free, and start at 6.30pm. The Anem a l’Auditori cycle includes El Sueño de Laia, a free weekly theatre workshop at the Casa De Cultura for the eight-to-12s. The workshops begin next Monday, February 3.

Storm Gloria’s reckless selfies FIVE Dutch tourists taking photographs at the height of Storm Gloria were injured after they were pummelled by violent waves. They were standing on the breakwater at the Puerto Blanco marina when the wall of water hit, but managed to cling to the rocks to avoid being swept out to sea. Instead, the mountainous waves flung them into the marina where all were injured to varying degrees.
One of the party broke a leg and had to be evacuated by the Guardia Civil and paramedics who transferred him to the local hospital. Municipal sources throughout the Costa Blanca agreed afterwards that visitors and residents alike stubbornly ignored calls not to endanger their lives or their possible rescuers and continued to take selfies against the dramatic backdrops provided by the raging storm.
Sala said. Carlos Mazon, president of Alicante’s provincial council, the Diputacion, who was present at Calpe’s FITUR presentation declared that Calpe was unique. “It has El Peñon, something given to it by nature that no other municipality possesses,” Mazon point-
ed out. During the Calpe delegation’s FITUR visit, they had meetings with Cycling Friendly, with whom the town hall is compiling a personalised catalogue of 10 cycling routes in and around the town. Cycle tourism is of such increasing importance that it will now have its own sec-
tion on the municipality’s website while Calpe is to have a dedicated space on Cycling Friendly’s own website, promoting the town. Sala and her team also made contact with the Icelandic tour operator VITA which is interested in sending its high-spending tourists to Calpe.

This section is on a bend on the river and in winter the draw for places can be all-important, not so much for where the fish might be but for comfort. One side of the bend receives no sunshine and depending on the direction of the wind it can be bitterly cold, and so it proved that day.

It was a chill eight degrees and some members were in the shade, directly in the path of a fairly stiff breeze and they said it felt as though they were fishing in the Arctic. However, everyone managed to catch something and when the
match ended there were no empty nets and several handsome carp weighing over three kilos had been caught. “We are a very friendly club and are always happy to welcome new members,” the club secretary said. By the end of the day, the fishermen still had ‘dozens of kilos’ of unauctioned fish even after lowering to the price to 50 cents a kilo.

VALENCIAN Community president Xim Puig called for unity from the Administrations and tourism sector. Speaking at the Fitur tourism trade fair in Madrid in the aftermath of Storm Gloria, Puig stressed the resilience of the Valencia region but said it was necessary to look ahead. It was essential to act rapidly, Puig said, so that the sector could recover and ensure that infrastructures were ready for Easter Week. “The last few days have been very hard for
our beaches and tourist sector,” Puig admitted, but promised that the Generalitat would immediately roll out a government decree to help devastated areas. Puig also visited Fitur’s Valencian Community stands accompanied by Reyes Maroto, Jose Luis Abalos and Luis Planas, respective ministers for Tourism, Infrastructure and Agriculture and Fisheries. The regional president highlighted the importance of the Green Infrastructure Action Plan (PATIVEL) approved in May
2018 to ring-fence 7,000 hectares of Valencian Community land of immense environmental, territorial and scenic value to protect it from speculation. Equally important was the Flood Risk Territorial Action Plan (PATRICOVA), designed to regulate building developments on land susceptible to flooding, Puig said. “We must continue working on these structural questions as the climate emergency is here and it could be necessary to alter some strategies.”

Creama gets creative A RECENT workshop on Radio and Podcasting was so successful that it will be continued next Tuesday, February 4. Organised by the Javea branch of the Marina Alta Consortium for Economic Recovery (CREAMA), and led by well-known podcaster Joan Raez, the workshop showed how to record, edit and improve audio files, create a channel and attract an audience.
Raez explained that podcasting is increasingly important as a marketing tool and can also help businesses to reach clients who would be unlikely to read a blog. The workshop’s second phase will be more practical and show how it is possible to use modern technology to broadcast live radio or accompany videos with good sound recordings, CREAMA announced.

New UK overdraft rates WHEN you consider that the Bank of England Base Rate is just 0.75 per cent and savers are doing well to obtain interest at 3 per cent, consumers must be wondering how the High Streets banks can justify introducing new overdraft rates of almost 40 per cent! The Financial Conduct Authority instructed the banks to be more transparent with charges for unau thorised overdrafts and accepted that there might be some need to increase approved overdraft rates but apparently relied on the expec tation that banks would be com petitive keeping down costs.

Unemployment down in 2019 THE latest survey on employment in Spain, published by the National Statistics Institute, showed that by the end of 2019 unemployment had dropped to 13.78 per cent, the lowest annual fig-
ure since 2008. With the creation of 402,300, the total number unemployed in Spain is now 3,191,900 but the 2019 new jobs total is the lowest since 2014 and a large amount
still encompasses temporar y jobs based on the run up to Christmas. Andalucia has seen the largest fall in unemployment with 41,900 people finding jobs.
They are now surprised to dis cover that the majority of banks have settled on an annual rate of between 39 and 40 per cent and have asked the banks to explain their thinking behind both the charges and the lack of competi tion. In addition, they have asked how the banks will deal with those who are worse off under the new sys tem and their response will be awaited urgently by those who may be affected. When many banks introduced daily charges it was clear that there was an overall increase to the con sumer and now if these new rates go through unchanged, an autho rised overdraft is likely to be more expensive than using a credit card. Whilst there may be savings for those who used unauthorised over drafts, it is estimated that around 19 million people who have ac counts with UK banks have autho rised overdrafts and it could mean that they will be paying £400 (€450) interest on every £1,000 (€1,150) they borrow from the banks.

They have actually released a short cartoon video, which depicts a number of extreme acts by snarling white thugs as examples of the ‘hate’ they consider unacceptable. One shows a man pulling off a Muslim woman’s hajib. Another depicts a crew cut individual abusing a black shopkeeper and a further example demonstrates a crestfallen black schoolboy being refused permission to board a bus. Can’t these naive morons get

into their thick, left wing biased mentality, that this ‘cartoon’ is in itself reverse racism at its very worst? Can they also not understand quite how open to abuse a directive of this nature can be? This is an invitation for all ethnic minorities to report
the white population for just about anything they consider not quite to their liking. An opportunity to create a positive tsunami of time wasting frivolous racist accusations. How long before the complaints begin to pour in that
someone felt they were, looked at in a ‘wrong way’ or ‘bumped into’ purposely? We already had the case of the Muslim person who considered a driver honked his horn aggressively. That accusation could be considered a near homicide compared to the level of nonsense claims that could now almost certainly descend on the authorities. Can our esteemed snowflake appeasers also not understand that rubbish of this ilk drives even more of a wedge between the beleaguered indigenous population and its ethnic counterparts; pushing them even further apart? And what about the other way around? What about the highly objectionable verbal accusations of being ‘privileged white men,’ publicly voiced by black lady TV panellists of late? I don’t hear anyone complaining about these blatant racist outbursts. Well of course
not. Can’t upset the minorities can we? Thank the Lord that with my choice of residence I don’t have to put up with it all. Mind you, only last week I was actually told to ‘go back to my own country.’ Although I am aware that there are recourses in Spain for this type of behaviour, I simply shrugged it off as an ignorant isolated remark. A brainwashed UK citizen would probably have run crying to the authorities and got the perpetrator six months! Fortunately Spain has got its priorities right. Not a great deal of ‘nanny state’ nonsense over here, I’m delighted to say. What a shame the country I love has got it all so wrong, and allowed the snowflakes and ‘wokers’ to bring it to its knees. BARRY DUKE LAST week, at considerable expense and after four days of extreme duress, I acquired a ‘Happiness Engineer.’ He wasn’t an anger management guru, but instead a helpline assistant working for the Wordpress company in America. Wordpress, for the record, is extensively used by bloggers such as myself, and for reasons best known to the bosses, they chose to saddle their assistants with the cheesy title of ‘Happiness Engineers.’ Only in America, huh? I was forced to communicate with Wordpress after a site I administer for a UK-based LGBT charity, the Pink Triangle Trust (PTT), went down - just as I was about to post an important item of news concerning a friend, Cliff James, who had just featured in a BBC documentary about paedophile priests in the Church of England. James had been a victim of abuse by the late Bishop Peter Ball. In a bid to avoid an expensive phone call to America, I tried to get the problem resolved by using

Wordpress’s ‘live chat’ page. I was then directed to a site called ‘Just Answers,’ and was informed that I’d have to pay $5.00 before I could get any help. The site looked kosher, but before paying I checked its credentials, and all seemed tickety-boo. So I used my Barclays debit card to complete the transaction. After my card was declined, I had no option but to call Wordpress. I gritted my teeth when the bloke at the other end of the line said ‘Hi, I’m Ghupta, your Happiness Engineer.’ After Ghupta proved as much use as a marshmallow dagger, DragonStack, a local website development company that designed my site, got onto Wordpress which said the matter would be sorted - after it received payment of $97.36! When I was emailed the bill, I again used my Barclays card. This payment was also rejected so I used my husband’s card instead. After that, I decided to take a breather and wait until the site was restored. Then I got a telephone call from Barclays’ fraud team, in-
forming me that, following my attempt to pay the $5, multiple efforts had been made to extract various amounts from my account. These ranged from £250,000 to £5 million. As I listened aghast to what Barclays was telling me, the conversation was suddenly terminated, and I had to call back for further information. For 35 minutes I was kept on hold, listening to annoying muzak. Then Barclays’ equivalent of a ‘Happiness Engineer’ asked me to log onto my online banking account, without saying why. When I tried to do so I found I was locked out. ‘Ah, that would be because your debit card has been blocked,’ said the assistant in an inappropriately cheery tone. When I said I needed to draw cash that day, she said ‘no worries, just pop into any branch with your card and a passport.’ I barked that this wasn’t an option as I live in Spain. Her reply? ‘Oh, that’s nice. What’s the weather like there?’ I screamed ‘it’s p***ing down stair rods! We have thunder and lightning and gale force winds!’ When she said ‘well, it’s lovely over here,’ my phone went flying across the room.

Internet Safety Corner What you need to know about ‘IoT’ and how it could affect you
INTERNET OF THINGS (IoT) devices and gadgets are increasingly creeping to the top of the wish lists for Christmas presents, birthday gifts and others are simply saving up to get some of these great devices. IoT devices cover a massive variety of primarily ‘connected’ devices from Laptops, Home Automation, TVs, Speakers, Health & Fitness gadgets and Sensors to drones or even connected toys. Many of us love the idea of having cool gadgets we can connect to the internet, but do we all know how they work or what vulnerabilities we could be exposed to? IoT (Internet of Things) devices. It is impossible to list the
amount and variety of IoT devices available today in the marketplace. From wearable gadgets, connected fridges, home automation sensors, cameras, smartphones, tablets to media players and all kinds of gadgets we can connect to the internet. Each one of these IoT devices is engineered and designed to somehow ‘make life better’ and the chances are their good intentions are 100 per cent legitimate. The problem is that in this price competitive field, there are thousands of different electronic components that can be chosen by the manufacturers to build their devices. Some have huge budgets to run se-
curity checks but others do not. The bottom line is that our IoT devices may have electronic components which may or may not have known vulnerabilities. Once your cool gadget is ‘connected’ to your network it may perform just as expected, but if you are unlucky, it could also be a ‘trojan horse’ inside your network! What damage can this do? No matter how much effort you have put into building yourself a nice and secure network, it takes just one ‘cool gadget’ to create a vulnerability which could be harmless or become a serious problem. For example, you buy a nice and cheap smoke sensor online for your home and you
connect it to your WiFi so it can alert you anytime. If you are unlucky, this smoke sensor could have exploitable electronic components which might be known to hackers and keep a ‘door open’ to your network. This could allow a hacker to access your home network through the smoke sensor to then have access to files on your computers or even view video footage of your webcam. If you have home automation devices, a hacker could disable alarms or sensors. The damage ranges from loss of privacy to stealing data or access to your property. What can you do to reduce the risks? As usual, the chances are
very low that you could be a target for any kind of ‘hacking’ even if you did have an IoT device with a security vulnerability, but it is important you have at least some kind of idea of how they work and how it could affect you. We would recommend you purchase IoT devices from manufacturers you feel you can trust, companies who have cutting edge safety and security procedures and invest heavily in production. The truth is this is all still too new to know for sure, so think about what you buy, if you really need it, if they really need to be connected and if you feel you can trust the company who manufactured it!

Too much choice of everything MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I’VE never been much use at DIY. In fact, I can just about spell it! One of the reasons is all the tools you need. A perfect example of this is screwy things and my major problem is why can’t there be just one type? Let me explain. One of the folding handles on my wheelchair became loose and fell out. I found it, put it back in and went to get my Swiss army knife which is my entire tool kit. I then found it needed something called an Allen key which was obviously invented by some geezer called Allen. I just googled it and it was! Anyway, I didn’t have one or anything that would tighten up this thing. Which made me think, why do we have to have so many different heads on these bolts and screws? There is Phillips, posidrive, flat head, Allen what’s the point? Why not just have one? Do we really need bugle heads, round head, pan head, button head and, of course, my personal favourite
the flange head. I’m sure some expert will tell me it’s all about torque, but la la la la I’m not listening. There is too much choice of everything. Take coffee - all you need is black or white not 12 varieties that Starbucks do. And, for sure, why do we need a coffee called Kopi Luwak which is made from... wait for it cat poo! All the poncey names too. All of a sudden Doris the tea lady has become a Barista. I thought that was someone who defended you in court when you have been knicked. I don’t know what’s happening with government run stuff here. I still haven’t got my Spanish driving licence which I applied for last May. So technically I can’t drive anywhere except Spain. Tried to book my car in for ITV and was told it might get done in March even though it runs out end of January. Surely it can’t all to be to do with Brexit? I’ve been watching the Trump impeachment on TV and find it fascinating. I also listen to him speak and read his Twitter rants. And that’s what they are - Fox fed rants. I still can’t understand how anyone can really believe he is the greatest POTUS ever, but they do. Just remember whether Trump is found guilty or not - he’s guilty!

SCOOTER MADNESS DEAR Euro Weekly, I am writing to you regarding electric scooters, which are all the trend right now. They are dangerous things that shouldn’t be allowed. If you allow them on the pavements you get people with serious injuries and the drivers facing jail time. If you allow them on the roads, you get accidents and people on scooters getting killed. It’s a lose-lose situation either way. I don’t think bike lanes are a good idea either, apart from the fact that people on scooters seem set on disobeying the law. The only viable solution is a lane specific to scooters, and I can assure you tax payers don’t want to finance that! For now, the simplest resolution is to ban them completely. Of course, they aren’t our biggest problem, but they are a problem. Let’s get rid of them once and for all, please! Tony Richards Torrox Costa
No need for weed EURO WEEKLY, There is an issue that needs to be addressed by all of us. Marihuana is a powerful drug that is absolutely rampant in most countries. In the UK it’s also a big problem, although maybe its consumption is more private than here in Spain. I live close to the centre of Alicante and I smell it almost every time I’m out and about. I’m not condemning the use of marihuana in any way, and I believe that it can be good for things like Parkinson’s. But there needs to be control over the use of this powerful drug. At what point did smoking marihuana become normalised? It’s not the same as smoking a cigarette and we need to remind the younger generation of this. Governments need to step their game up and put laws in place that can control the situation. In this day and age, it should be possible to stop the crime and devastation surrounding this drug. Joining together DEAR EWN I’m glad that as a mostly British community we are also getting stuck in with our Spanish compatriots. In Costa Blanca in Orihuela we are now battling the new multilingualism laws that have been approved for the upcoming school year. As parents, we are pretty worried how this will affect our children. My wife and I have two children in school who speak Spanish almost

fluently, but barely any Valencian. Classes in Valencian would be very hard for them, and me and my wife already discussed moving them to a British school. Despite these struggles, the recent protests have been really nice for us in the community. Awards season THIS week, Deborah Dugan, the former CEO of the Recording Academy, the body that oversees the Grammy Awards, filed a discrimination lawsuit against her former employer days ahead of the annual ceremony. It included allegations of gender discrimination, and corruption, casting a shadow of doubt and mistrust on the award system revered as music’s highest honour. Dugan mentions in her claims that huge worldwide artists of colour such as Beyoncé, Kanye West, and Mariah Carey, were snubbed in previous years, and that the biggest awards tend to go to rock, country, and pop artists. She then outlined how the Grammy voting process is allegedly tainted. Submissions for awards are initially voted on by members of the Academy, however, once these nominations are whittled down, the board promotes artists they have relationships with, and ‘manipulates the nominations process’ to include artists they want to perform during the ceremony. In her legal filing, Dugan blamed the ‘boys’ club’ mentality of executives as influential factors that were ultimately reflected in the voting process for annual Grammy nominations. During Dugan’s short time as CEO of the Academy, she was adamant about making changes to address public concern that the Grammys were becoming outdated and failed to showcase a more diverse pool of musicians. The Recording Academy denied the rigging accusations in a statement saying, “Spurious allegations claiming members or committees use our process to push forward nominations for artists they have relationships with are categorically false, misleading and wrong.” With shadows cast over many of these long-running awards ceremonies can they ever go back to awards for pure merit?

ALMOST half of the children admitted to hospital for asthma are passive smokers, according to a study conducted at the Gregorio Maraùón Hospital in Madrid. The information coincides with data given by the World Health Organisation, that states 40 per cent of children are exposed to passive smoking at home. In Spain, the prevalence of childhood asthma is estimated at around 10 per cent. Up until now, it was known that babies born of smoking mothers had diminished lung function and that children exposed to passive smoking also suffered an alteration of their lung capacity. The study analysed the situation of 365 children who, at some time between 2011 and 2015, were admitted to hospital due to an asthmatic crisis. It revealed that 41 per cent of children who had severe asthmatic crises were subjected to passive smoking at home. The average age of patients in the paediatrics ward was five and the dura-
tion of their admission was four days. Doctors observed that children exposed to smoke had lower oxygen saturation at the time of admission, as well as more severe crises and worst lung parameters. It was also noted that the asthma was more acute when the father was a smoker, compared to the mother. The information from the investigation was presented in a scientific letter, published in the journal of the Spanish Society of Paediatric Pulmonology. Doctors explain that asthma and passive smoking are a worrying combination. Children who suffer from bronchial hyperreactivity are more sensitive to environmental pollutants, including tobacco smoke, that increases airway inflammation and causes a limitation of air flow.

ACTRESS Belén Cuesta has won the award for Best Leading Actress for her role as Rosa in ‘La Trinchera Infinita.’ In the film the actress gives life to Rosa, a ‘mole’ during the Franco regime that has to live hidden, trapped in her own home when her husband is captured by the Guardia Civil. It is the actress's third nomination and her first Goya Award. Cuesta took to the stage brimming with both excitement and pride, especially for having received the award in her hometown, Malaga. Although born in Sevilla, her childhood and adolescence were spent in the coastal town of Fuengirola. She trained as an actress at the Cimera d’Arte Drama School in Malaga, in addition to receiving classes in interpretation from other schools. On accepting the award she thanked her classmates: Penelope Cruz, Greta Fernández and Marta Nieto. MANY people get a certain image in their head when they hear the term ‘Fast Food.’ A burger, Chinese take away, chips, kebabs. They are deemed ‘Fast’ because the only time and effort you’ve had to make was ordering it or waiting for it to be delivered. This week I fancied something fast. I set myself the challenge of cooking two tapas dishes in five minutes. Add in the two minutes of preparation and I had two delicious dishes on the table for lunch in a total of about seven minutes. Gambas (Prawns) Al Ajillo and Padron Peppers made a very tasty lunch. Have ready two garlic cloves chopped, a red chilli deseeded and chopped and some parsley finely chopped.
Put the peppers in a small bowl and cover with water. That’s it, the prep is done. Get two pans on a high heat, when hot add olive oil to both pans. Take the peppers out of the water and shake excess water off, put carefully in the pan, they will spit a bit, but it’s the dampness of the peppers that will make them blister. Put the garlic and chilli in the other pan, leave a minute then add the whole prawns. A minute or two on each side, sprinkle in the parsley and remove to your serving dish. Cover with the juices from the pan. The peppers are ready when they have started to collapse in the middle. Sprinkle both dishes with sea salt. Enjoy!

SOCIAL SCENE BOWLER’S PRIVATE DINING TO start off this week we have ‘meatballs,’ a very Spanish dish you will find in tapas bars all over the Costa, you can use beef or lamb mince for this recipe. This dish is nicely spicy, a little bit sweet and fragrant and will go well with pasta or even better with my second recipe ‘couscous.’ Consisting of many tiny granules made from steamed and dried durum wheat, couscous has become a popular alternative to rice and pasta.
‘Meatballs in sauce’ 500gm beef or lamb mince 1 onion diced 1 garlic clove crushed a pinch of dried chilli flakes (optional) 1 tsp ground cumin salt and pepper for seasoning olive oil for frying Sauce: 1 onion finely chopped 2 cloves of garlic crushed 2 x 400gm tins of chopped peeled tomatoes 200 ml chicken or lamb stock 1 tsp cumin 2 tsp sugar 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp chilli flakes (again I used smoked) salt to taste fresh coriander / cilantro to garnish Place all the meatball ingredients in a bowl and using your hands mix to combine roll into meatballs, heat the olive oil in a pan and fry the meatballs in batches or six until nicely browned all round, set aside. Lightly fry the onions, garlic and spice ingredients for the sauce in the meatball pan (with a drizzle more of olive oil) until softened about five minutes. Add the tomatoes and the stock, bring to the boil and then

It has a light fluffy texture which is a little bland in flavour but which readily soaks up the flavours of other ingredients. For my kids’ corner this week I
have chosen the good old toffee apple. Nothing beats the crunch of a toffee apple, a big hit for Halloween and Guy Fawkes time.
350ml chicken stock 1/2 bunch parsley chopped 1/2 bunch coriander chopped 1/2 onion diced finely 1/2 pomegranate seeds
MEATBALLS: Nicely spicy. reduce to a simmer, cook for about 10 minutes until slightly thickened, add the meatballs back into the sauce and allow them to finish off cooking about eight minutes depending how big the meatballs are. ‘Herb couscous’ First heat your stock in a saucepan until it boils. to prepare the couscous add the herbs,onion, olive oil, salt and pepper to a bowl, then add the boiling stock and cover and allow to stand until all the water has been absorbed, about three minutes. Scatter over pomegranate seeds to bring the sweetness and freshness when ready to serve. Couscous goes well with any meat or fish dish! 200g couscous drizzle of olive oil
Kids’ corner ‘Good old toffee apples’ • 250g sugar • 110 ml water • ½ a teaspoon of vinegar • 25 g butter • 6 apples • 6 wooden skewers or ice cream sticks Heat the 110ml of water in a pan on a medium heat and before it starts to boil add sugar in the water so it dissolves. Bring the water and sugar mixture to a boil and cook without stirring. You will notice the mixture will start to thicken into a syrup. While the syrup mixture is cooking, pierce each apple with a wooden stick leaving enough stick out to be used to hold. Once the syrup mixture is ready, dip each apple into the mixture whilst turning the stick around so the syrup fully coats each apple. Place each coated toffee apple on a baking tray to cool before serving. The toffee apples should be able to keep for up to five days.

Lexus ‘ lectric THE Lexus car brand will start sales of its first electric model, the UX 300e, in the fourth quarter of this year in the European market. As reported by the director of Lexus in Europe, Pascal Ruch, the brand of the Toyota group aims to go ‘further’ in reducing the impact on the environment of its vehicles and start deliveries of its first electric model, since the 96 per cent of Lexus registrations in Europe are hybrid. As the first production model under the Lexus Electrified banner, the all-electric UX 300e was developed for excellent on-road performance. Lexus engineers kept the distinctive design and the utility characteristics of the UX crossover intact, and focused on the opportunities to build on the performance advantages unique to EVs. The UX 300e’s high-output motor provides a natural-yet-brisk acceleration character, and the high-capacity batteries located directly underneath the floor of the cabin deliver a low centre of gravity and 400 km-driving range. Combined with the newest connectivity technology, the UX 300e maximises the advantages of EVs while realising driving performance and convenience in a single package. Lexus has always focused on providing exhilarating performance, and the case is
no different with development of a BEV. Starting from the refined Lexus driving signature of the UX, Lexus engineers were able to leverage the new electric drivetrain to even further enhance the vehicle’s on-road performance. At the same time, UX 300e has one of the quietest cabins in its class, as befits the sound management heritage of the Lexus DNA. The new model’s Drive Mode Select function lets customers manage smooth acceleration and deceleration according to their situation. Drivers can feel the powerful acceleration and instant torque of the EV powertrain as they push the pedal, and use the paddle shift in a similar manner as engine braking, through four levels of deceleration regeneration - all while enjoying a natural on-road feel. The UX 300e provides excellent dynamic performance thanks to the low centre of gravity resulting from motor and battery placement underneath the vehicle body, combined with optimised front/rear weight distribution and moment of inertia. While EVs are naturally quiet, UX 300e adds insulation beyond just the battery and suppresses outside noises which would be otherwise noticeable in the absence of an engine and transmission. Billic knocks out his old Club West Ham IT was an afternoon to cherish for Slaven Bilic as his West Brom side claimed the first Premier League scalp of the FA Cup fourth round weekend, beating former employers West Ham 10 at the London Stadium. The Baggies had several early chances before they took an early ninth minute lead. Issa Diop failed to clear his lines and the ball fell to left-back Conor Townsend, whose rasping 20-yard strike from the edge of the box sailed past Darren Randolph into the far right corner. Charlie Austin should have made it two for the JASON CUMMINGS scored a second-half double off the bench as Shrewsbury Town came from behind to earn a surprise 2-2 draw against Liverpool in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday. Within 15 minutes of replacing Callum Lang on the hour mark, Cummings converted from the penalty spot and guided a cool finish past Adrian to earn League One side Shrewsbury a replay against the Premier League leaders at Anfield. Eighteen-year-old Bukayo Saka lashed the Gunners into an early lead as he found space on the left-hand side of the box, before sending a thunderous strike through the fingertips of Mark Travers and into the roof of the Cherries net. A quick turn of pace saw Joe Willock go through one-on-one with the Bournemouth shotstopper, but the angle proved too tight for the youngster, who poked his effort into Travers’ midriff. Howe’s worries were compounded by the strength of the lineup he fielded. This was an experienced group of players, yet they looked like rabbits in headlights against Mikel Arteta’s youthful Gunners team. There’s clearly some cause for concern. Nevertheless, this was an FA Cup fixture, and it’s plainly obvious which competition Bournemouth are prioritising. Several stars will be restored to the side once Premier League action resumes. That’ll give Howe a better chance to assess where his team are at mentally.
Big donation for Norway Cup team ALFAZ’S Cadetes junior football team are already in training for t h i s y e a r ’s N o r w a y Cup next summer. The Norway Cup is the world’s largest youth football tournament, a six-day festival for players aged between 10 and 19 that has been held annually in Oslo since 1972. Last year’s Alfaz team did very well in the tournament, winning five matches until they were finally defeated in the sixth during extra time with a last-minute penalty from their opponents. Each year Alfaz’s size-
able Norwegian community raises money to ensure that the municipality’s junior team can take part. When one of them, Tormod Seljevoll, celebrated his 80th birthday
