The minor was struck by a vehicle as she was attempting to cross Calle Jaume Tortella de Andratx at approximately 9pm on January 18. The teenager, who is a resident of Calvia, had been on her way to her friend’s house after celebrating the Sant Sebastià festivities in the capital. MALLORCA was put on high alert for extreme weather earlier this week as the Atlantic storm Gloria swept across the island, bringing heavy rain, powerful winds, unexpected snowfall, freezing cold temperatures and dangerously high sea levels. The State Meteorology Agency (Aemet) had issued a red warning for Mallorca on January 19, forecasting extreme weather conditions for three days with the storm resulting in historical levels being reached.

HIGH RISK: A red alert was activated for Mallorca due to Storm Gloria. A tremendous 14-metre high wave, almost twice the height of a double
decker bus, was recorded in Sa Dragonera on Monday - the highest

Witnessing the horrifying incident, residents rushed to help and immediately alerted the emergency services hotline, where in a matter of minutes, officers from the Local Police were on the scene. An ambulance arrived shortly after with paramedics treating the victim before she was taken to a Son Espases hospital.
Medical personnel later reported the girl sustained head injuries but is expected to fully recover. The case has now been handed over to the Guardia Civil in a bid to bring the responsible driver to justice. Residents have also voiced their fury on the incident, stating the outcome could have been fatal. Speaking on behalf the Andratx Residents’ Association, a spokesperson said: “It is impossible the driver didn’t see they hit the girl. The car came down

Upon the predicated forecasts, officials from the Consell de Mallorca had worked in collaboration with the National Police, SAMU-061 and the Fire Brigade to prepare an emergency plan for floods. This was a stark reminder to ensure the safety of residents to avoid the same tragedy that devastated the island in October 2018, when 13 people lost their lives and countless homes destroyed.

The gang went unnoticed by appearing to be part of a legitimate association, but through intelligence the police soon became aware that they were seeking to fill a gap left by the disbanded Hells Angels.
Those arrested were presented to the judge at the Via Alemania Court in Palma on January 18, faced with a 1,000-page dossier from the police. Responding only to questions from their defence lawyers, four members including Milojevic were ordered to be held in custody. The others were charged and released due to having less involvement in the group and their low risk of fleeing the island.

THE National Police have arrested several members of a violent criminal gang who were dedicated to trafficking drugs across the country. A total of 16 people from the ‘United Tribuns Nomads’ group were arrested in various regions in Spain, with six members detained in Mallorca, including the alleged leader Stefan Milojevic. The gang had initially chosen the island to be their criminal base but expanded to Madrid, Barcelona, Girona, Tarragona, Valencia and Tenerife, where it is reported that they had international connections with notorious criminals spanning the globe. Missing in the storm FEARS are at an all time high after a 27-year-old man disappeared whilst canyoning in the storm. The man had been lowered with a rope by his two accompanying friends down the Torrent de Na Mora at approximately 6pm on January 20. A powerful force of water then ran through the torrent, with the man disappearing below. The emergency services were immediately alerted, launching a search and rescue operation due
to the adverse weather conditions faced and the grave danger posed. This led to the Special Action Group (GEAS) and the Guardia Civil Mountain Rescue (GREIM) working alongside the Fire Brigade to battle the storm in hope of finding the man. They had searched in the waters of the torrent until 1am on January 21, however the weather conditions severely worsened, resulting in the rescue mission being called off. The search began again the
Cruise visitors THIS year, Palma City Council will scatter cruise ship passengers to different arrival points across the city to avoid overcrowding in the capital. The system will also be used to distribute bus passengers, where tour companies will decide upon which entry point is used. Pedro Homar, the Manager of Fundació Turisme Palma 365 estimates that there are between 500 and 600 people visiting the city each day during high season. He said: “We will continue with the redistribution of cruise passengers, but also from this year we want to include tourists who stay outside the city and take a day trip to visit Palma, through a travel agency or hotel.” Homar added that “to avoid saturation in the Old Town, they will also be distributed upon arrival in the city instead of all getting off the bus at Moll Vell.”

ALARMING figures have been released from the Federation of Caves in the Balearic Islands which indicated that there is a 10-metre-high accumulation of waste under Cuevas Genovesa in Cala Anguila. Describing the pollution as a ‘huge mountain,’ the Federation states that the waste is a mixture of faeces and organic matter in addition to significant amounts of plastics. Due to the threat posed to maritime species and human health, the Federation has declared the cave as a ‘Zone of Special Conservation’ (ZEC), denouncing the concerning issue to the Ministry of Environment. Last December, a local conservation group had warned the government about the high concentration of waste which they believed had ended up in the sea due to a poor functioning of sewage systems.

THE city council of Palma has begun its crackdown on abandoned vehicles in the city, removing 26 cars this week. Led by officers from the Local Police, council workers toured the capital with a heavy-duty tow truck, lifting the dumped cars from the roads. Mayor José Hila praised the council’s initiative by sharing images of the removals on his official Twitter account. He stated that this was just the start of a long-running campaign and warned residents that those who abandon cars will not only receive a fixed penalty, but will be responsible for covering the cost of the removal.
Boost for business THE city council of Calvia has announced that it will continue to allocate public resources this year to boost the modernisation of commercial establishments in the main tourist areas of the municipality. However, the offer of council funds has been relatively low in recent years, where in 2019, only nine businesses successfully applied for grants to improve the appearance of their premises. A total of €75,000 had been allocated by the council for this aid, but last year only €20,308 was taken from the pot. At the end of last year, Alfonso Rodríguez, the mayor of Calvia, announced that a great deal of resources would be made available to improve bars, clubs, restaurants and shops in the region, where there would be ‘new and more potent’ grants for modernisation. The grants are intended to be used for improving the condition of establishments such as painting, signage and furnishings.

MALLORCAN sporting hero Rafael Nadal has let the world in to his home on the island, giving a tour of the property to an international television network. Appearing on the CBS programme ‘60 Minutes,’ the usually private tennis star showed off his stunning traditional Mallorcan stone chalet in Porto Cristo which is currently under renovations. Set over 7,000 square metres of land and situated on the coast, Nadal explained that he bought the property to be close to his parents. When work is complete, it will mean he is just three minutes away from where his new yacht will be moored, which he foresees may be an issue in the summer when children from Manacor will go across part of his land in order to access the sea. Nadal had purchased the chalet in 2013 from the heirs of the family who established the iconic Cuevas del Drach as an attraction. The property did have an asking price of €5.7 million, however the sporting talent paid €4 million.
Religious vandals THE Local Police are appealing for information from residents after a large stone cross was stolen from Binissalem. The monument, situated on Carrer de Biniali, vanished in the early hours of the morning on Friday, January 17, prompting members of the local community to raise the alarm with the police. Investigators strongly suspect that the theft was carried out by the
same group of people who attempted to steal a haul of religious artefacts from a church in the municipality. Ropes had been found tied around a selection of stone statues but proved too heavy for the thieves to move. THE wooden train that connects Palma to the town of Sóller had submitted a formal request to become part of the Federation in October of last year, with members of FEDECRAIL paying a visit to Mallorca. At present, the organisation works with more than 650 historic and tourist trains in more than 27 countries and aims to protect the interests of heritage railways. Gibraltar won’t negotiate with EU THERE seems to be some confusion between Gibraltar and the UK after Chief Minister Fabian Picardo gave an interview in which it appeared that he was looking for Gibraltar to join Schengen following Brexit. There was a response from a UK government spokesman (according to the BBC) saying that this was not possible and that any arrangement would have to be part of the UK-EU talks on future relations with the European Union. Since then, Mr Picardo has explained that he wasn’t looking for FORMER Secretary of State for International Trade under Theresa May and a staunch Brexiteer has taken the opportunity to give public advice to Boris Johnson with regards to trade deals with the USA. He considers that it is more than likely that there will be a considerable delay in setting in place a deal with the American federal government due to the British decision to support the EU ban on

As Gibraltar employs so many Spaniards and expatriates who live in Spain, any delay at the border could be harmful not only to the economy of Gibraltar (which also sees large numbers of tourists entering across the land border) but also to the local Spanish towns such as La Linea de la Concepcion, Alcaidesa and San Roque who rely on workers’ income. It would appear that Northern Ireland will receive special treatment as far as cross border movement with its neighbour the Republic and Gibraltar is anxious to see as little disruption with movement into Spain as possible.

Pet friendly PALMA is well on its way to becoming a pet-friendly city as EMT has announced that it will extend the number of buses that animals can travel on with their owners. Currently, EMT allows passengers to travel with pets on lines L1, A1, A2, L2, L3, L4, L20 and L35, where from February 1, lines L11, L14, L16, L24, L31, L32, L46 and L47 will also be authorised for animals. Costing 30 cents per journey, EMT regulations state that dogs must be tied with a lead and wear a muzzle whilst on the bus.
In the case of puppies, cats, rabbits and other pets, they must be kept inside a basket or carrier. Dog breeds that are classified as dangerous will however not be allowed to travel. Palma City Council has praised the move from EMT and hopes that the measure will be implemented on all lines by the first quarter of 2022.

Despite their autonomous operations management, every regional service is fully incorporated into a unique and common Public National Health System, supplying a cohesive blood transfusion care to all citizens, residents, and visitors in Spain based on 100 per cent voluntary and non-remunerated blood donation. Anyone who has lived continuously in the UK between 1980 and 1996 (a minimum of one year) will not be able to donate blood in Spain due to the risk of transmitting mad cow disease. Similarly, there are restrictions if you have received a blood transfer in the UK. However, each region may have different rules about donation. Call the donation helpline on 935 573 500. Alternatively, visit www.donorsang.gencat.cat to find out if you are eligible. If you are eligible, you can give blood at your local hospital, or via the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja) at one of their clinics, or in one of their mobile units. You can check dates and locations by visiting www.donarsangre.org. A donor card is not necessary to give blood. On the first visit you will have to provide DNI, NIE, passport or a driving licence. If you are already registered in the Blood Bank, you only need a donor card or a document with your name and surname. The process of blood donation takes just 10 minutes in which 450 ml are collected (equating to 10 per cent of the total blood circulation of an adult person). Despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain blood is through the generosity of the public. The blood is carefully screened for disease to make sure it is safe. After a tattoo, you must wait four months to be eligible to donate. After surgery, the exclusion period will depend on the type of intervention. After minor surgical procedures, you cannot donate blood for seven days or until you are fully recovered. After undergoing major surgery, you will not be able to donate blood for four months. The rarest blood type is AB, present in 1 per cent of Caucasians, according to research by the America Red Cross. Blood transfusions are carried out daily in Spanish hospitals with more than 6,200 patients being given them, of whom almost a quarter are fighting cancer and a similar figure receiving transfusions during or after surgery. There was more response to the Prime Minister’s optimism over reaching a deal with the EU by the end of the year as investors move their attention to the next Brexit milestone. There was more focus on monetary policy, with various indications from the Bank of England that a rate cut may be on the horizon. The dovish tone hasn’t been adopted without foundation GDP monthly statistics showed the UK economy shrank by 0.3% in November, lower than forecast. Manufacturing output fell 1.7% in November while the broader industrial production was down 1.2%. The consumer price index rose 1.3% in the year to December, lower than expected, while the retail price index was up by 2.2%. It was more of the same in Europe and the euro largely held steady. German factory orders fell 1.3% in November and
were down by 6.5% from the same month in 2018 and wholesale prices fell 1.3% in 2019. Industrial production increased by 1.1% the same month, but was still 2.6% lower on the year. Across Europe, inflation was in line with forecast at a provisional 1.3%. Notes from the ECB policy meeting on December 12, 2019 forecast modest growth of 1.1% for the eurozone this year. It’s been a busy couple of weeks for the US dollar, which rose amidst tensions in the Middle East before falling back after the de-escalation of the situation in Iran. A narrowing of the trade deficit, a fall in building permit issuance and a deterioration in the Ivey purchasing managers' index put light pressure on the Canadian dollar, although this was seen in the context of the tensions in the Middle East and a drop in the price of WTI crude. A slowdown in wage growth from 4.4% to 3.8% added a note of caution to growing speculation that the Bank of Canada may be putting plans for a rate cut on hold. Despite putting pressure on the Australian and New Zealand dollars throughout the dispute, a de-escalation of trade tensions between the US and China and the signing of a phase one agreement did little to assist the currencies. The Australian dollar continued to struggle due to significant domestic challenges including the bushfire crisis. In New Zealand, an improvement in business confidence was offset by a sharp fall in building permits, leaving the kiwi without direction.

The Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (APB) has specified that the main building will be preserved and protected and only the extension to the

for the renovation works which will focus on protecting the ground surfaces and dam. The APB has revealed that the project was delayed by six months due to the restaurateur refusing to leave the premises. However, a court order finally allowed the Authority to commence work this month.

Global leader THE President of the Consell de Mallorca has spoken about her desires for the island to become a leader in sustainable tourism. Speaking at the ‘NexMallorca’ conference at Es Baluard Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Catalina Cladera stated that the council will ensure that its future projects to promote tourism will be centred upon this ambition. Strategic plans were also detailed at the meeting as well as the value of the Mallorca brand internationally. According to the council, efforts will be made to position the island on the global market where promotion will focus on its excellent connectivity, natural values and the reinforcement of im-
age and reputation through intelligent management. Cladera stressed the importance of working with various stakeholders, including business, unions, associations and ecologists to achieve this goal and that promotion will follow well-defined guidelines for sustainable tourism. She stated that “this will allow Mallorca to become a highly modern and advanced destination that doesn't lose its leadership.” Tourism competitiveness was also discussed, with the Director of the Fundació Impulsa Antoni Riera presenting a detailed analysis. Here, the Balearic Islands were compared with 180 other short to medium-haul destinations, with the region taking eighth position.

There will be six cold and eight hot dishes introduced as new stores are opened and will eventually be on sale across the nation.

EU has trade surplus A REPORT compiled by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW Kiel) and the ifo Institute Munich has concluded that the European Union has a trade surplus with itself of €307 billion rather than the zero it should be. They contend that simple calcula tion errors could not possibly account for such a huge amount which grows annually, but is likely to be the result of massive tax fraud which affects every member state. According to their estimates, such practices could have cost the EU

However, if, in reality, these transac tions were not crossborder but do mestic, they are not recorded in the supposed trading partner’s import statistics and go untaxed,” explained those responsible for undertaking the study. Last year, the entire world ran a
trade surplus with itself of €357 bil lion, so this new analysis suggests that 86 per cent of the global devia tion is solely due to the EU and points a finger at the UK due in part to the way in which it prepares its trade data using small random sam ples only. Britain however battled for many years with the Carousel Fraud prob lem which saw goods imported from the EU without paying VAT and then companies selling those goods and charging VAT , finally closing down prior to paying the UK Customs and absconding with the money.
AFTER an initial test, Spain’s largest energy company Iberdrola has signed an agreement with the Avia service station network to in stall fast charging points for elec tric cars in 100 of Avia’s sites. Initially, they were tested in just seven provinces, but now it is ex pected that they will roll out into the majority of Spanish provinces and there will be a total of 500 fast chargers in the 100 service sta tions to ensure customer satisfac tion. Long term, Iberdrola aims to have 25,000 recharging points across the nation.
LEGALLY SPEAKING How to get 3/5 majority? Our community is considering a vote to limit shortterm holiday rentals, but how can we ob tain the votes of ‘threefifths of the members’ when fewer than half that number ever attend the AGM? I raised the question with our administrator who kindly explained in detail about ‘members present or by proxy’ and the first and second calling of the meeting. Can you confirm her explanation? S D (Costa Blanca) Yes, we can. We tend to use the YOU AND THE term ‘members’ LAW IN SPAIN too loosely. Here is the detailed picture. The announcement of the AGM should specify ‘first calling’ and then ‘second calling’ usu ally half an hour later. If 51 per cent of members and proxies are not present, the AGM cannot be held on first calling. At the second calling, valid decisions can be voted by the members and proxies present. So a threefifths vote of those present will suffice to pass resolutions. The members who did not attend can protest the vote within 30 days after being informed. Note that the law also spec ifies that this majority must include the ‘cuotas’ or partici pation shares as well as the number of owners.

Pension threshold THE UK Treasury is prepar ing to give tax relief to those earning more than £110,000 (€120,000) in or der to try to stem the early retirement of senior doc tors and consultants in the
NHS. It is suspected that the threshold will be in creased to £150,000 (€165,000), as this would help the majority of senior doctors. It will also benefit other
high income earners, but the main problem that the Treasury is trying to fix is the decision by many doc tors to either retire early or work parttime to reduce taxation.

So boring...
LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I REALLY could not have agreed more with actor Lawrence Fox, when he stated on last week’s Question Time that this whole racism question is becoming decidedly boring. I also loved his description of racist accusers being a bunch of ‘sanctimonious, humorless, preachy victimhood-peddling mediocrities that fill our public spaces.’ Brilliant, and so true. These people that find racism under every stone are the biggest racists of all. The United Kingdom is not America. Back in the 50’s and 60’s, when I was a lad, we had not even heard the word racism. When groups like the wonderful Platters, The Drifters, and performers with the talents of Johnny Mathis and Nat King Cole came along, we truly never saw colour. All we saw were great artists. The problems began to arise in the UK when the early black immigrants shied away from integration and began to create their own ‘tribal’ neighbourhoods, thereby setting themselves apart and consequently remaining an unknown and somewhat suspicious entity among the indigenous population. However, over the years with better education and with later
generations becoming more integrated, the British populace has tried its utmost to accept all as equal, and even introduced strict laws of the land to make sure that racial discrimination is in no way tolerated in the country. But that simply wasn’t good enough was it. The wingers, who either out of pure hatred or simply looking for excuses, still endeavour to put the blame for a whole multitude of their misfortunes on racism. Because many of their accusations are completely unfounded or frivolous, it’s made people angry, actually creating racism where it never before existed. This latest episode concerning the Duchess of Sussex is a typical example. The British people welcomed this young lady with open arms. Disregarding the despicable trolls, the fact that she was of mixed race was not an issue. Even the evangelistic wedding service, which was utterly unfamiliar and unorthodox to most of the British public, was accepted and celebrated as a part of their new royal family member’s heritage. Even when it became apparent that her main circle of friends - Oprah, Serena Williams, and the Obamas were all black, and she
was at loggerheads with her white father, the British public still never harped on about what could easily have be interpreted as her own racist leanings. But when it all started to go wrong, instead of blaming the fact this selfish and ambitious young lady’s dream of being a princess was not quite the ‘leading role’ she had in mind, the ‘usual suspects’ all began screaming that she was being forced to make her decisions because of racism! One accuser actually stated on TV that because she was depicted as the instigator of the Sussex decision to withdraw from the Royal family, it was inferring that all black women were aggressive and manipulating and therefore the insinuations were racist! No, I’m afraid those who stir up racism at every opportunity are themselves the true problem. The sooner we lay the blame where it truly belongs, the better. RECENT research showing that Neanderthals came to spend the summer on the south coast of the Iberian peninsula puts a new gloss on package holidays in the sun. DEAR Euro Weekly, It is such a shame for the royal couple, Harry and Meghan. Am I the only person that feels sorry for them? I think what they are doing is very admirable, surely they should be allowed to chose how to live their life or how much time they put into ‘royal’ duties. Maybe Harry knows something we don’t. There seem to be many questions left unanswered about the family. What really happened to Diana? What on earth is going on with Andrew? I mean is Prince Charles even Harry’s real Dad? I am sure it is James Hewitt. Poor Meghan, fairytales tell us that it’s every little girl’s dream to marry a handsome prince and she has done this and now faces all this backlash. Surely she can reappear in the cast of Suits if she wants to make her own money and Harry can stay at home with baby Archie. Anyway, leave the young couple alone and give them some space. From what I have understood, albeit with my limited knowledge of Spanish politics, is that the left parties are in government. They also have no respect for other cultures and on top of everything they are misogynistic. I say thank gosh that they didn’t get the top spot. Yes, I totally agree that the person blackmailing Malaga coach Victor Sánchez is a complete scumbag, but there is no reason to sack the man for having a bit of fun. He wasn’t hurting anybody apart from his own pride. Really the video is not that shocking and not anything that most people haven’t seen on TV or film. I am glad they managed to get to the source and arrest him. They should have a look at his phone and post some of his private photos online as part of his punishment. Be prepared WITH Storm Gloria already in full swing and having given the east of Spain such a powerful battering, more than 30 provinces in Spain were placed on high alert. As most of the sunny coast rarely have to suffer such extreme weather we have to ask that with such a specific infrastructure can they ever be prepared? Cataluña’s regional government went as far as banning outdoor activities in Girona and Barcelona, while Alicante Airport was forced to temporarily close, disrupting more than 200 flights. In southern Alicante, scenes of flooding and street debris reminded residents of the massive storm that hit them in September, when rivers burst their banks and caused widespread damage to property and crops. With the financial infrastructure of these coastal areas dependent on their beautiful beachfronts and import and export of seafood, the installation of storm surge barriers could provide protection from flooding during extreme weather events. By using a movable barrier it can still allow a flow of either maritime traffic or even natural movements of water to and fro. Many of the local governments already have beach regeneration projects to hinder erosion or regenerate the coastline. Future housing construction projects may need to take into consideration the ability to withstand stronger winds and the use of stronger or different materials. At any rate, Spanish cities will have to be built in a way that goes against what appears to be their nature, using the fullness of human ingenuity not to trample the earth and replace natural with the artificial, but to engineer both nature and the land in a way that emphasises their codependence.

Spanish weight worries AT present, 77 per cent of Spaniards have at least one meal away from home every day. Breakfast is the main culprit, as nine out of 10 people who eat it outside do so in a restaurant or bar. The latest lifestyle survey conducted by the Spanish Society of Obesity, throws a light on the country’s eating habits. According to the study, people who eat breakfast away from home increase their risk of obesity by 18.8 per cent. People who suffer with obesity are those who eat out for breakfast the most and generally have dinner at home. People are also more prone to weight problems if they shun vegetables as a main course or a side dish and opt for a sweet dessert instead of fruit. Eating sweet for pudding increases the risk of obesity by 20 per cent. In this regard, it is surprising that 40 per cent of obese people explained that they don’t have fruit because it’s never on restaurant menus. Restaurateurs argue that people go to restaurants to treat themselves, stating this as the reason for not putting an apple or

While there are many old wives’ tales surrounding the cold, a lot of popular beliefs can be scientifically proven. People like to say that the body loses heat through the head. In reality, heat can be lost through any part of the body that is exposed to cold, the head usually being one of them. And, although it may not seem like it, the head represents around 10 per cent of the body’s surface and weight. This is the reason why it is important to wear hats on very cold days, especially for people with little hair. Hands and feet can get cold very quickly as they are the most peripheral areas of the body. In low temperatures, our body prioritises pumping blood to the vital organs, leaving our extremities the last to receive warm blood. However, unless a person is exposed to extreme temperatures, this coldness does not negatively affect health or the immune system. A big number of people frequently question if the cold is slimming. In fact, the cold does actually cause the body to burn more calories. When the temperature drops, the body has to generate heat by burning the so called ‘brown fat.’ If we do not replenish that fat, it will result in weight loss. Nonetheless, nature is wise and it reacts to the change by increasing the feeling of hunger in the cold winter months. If you ever wondered if a thin person is more sensitive to the cold, the answer is yes. Subcutaneous fat acts as an insulator, meaning a person with low body fat will be more exposed to the chill.
Women are also more sensitive to low temperatures due to factors such as lower muscle mass than men, a faster metabolism and female hormones. When the temperature drops, women’s blood vessels close faster while in men the mechanism is much slower. This causes women’s skin to feel colder much before men suffer the same feeling. Luckily, our body is very adaptive. Just like other living beings, we can easily get accustomed to our environment in order to survive. The same happens throughout winter and, as winter progresses, we become less sensitive to the cold.

The new Spanish government has proven its commitment to stabilising property letting, as ministers finalise their plan to limit rent prices. The legal document known as the Rental Price Index is almost complete and government members hope it will limit rental prices in areas with high demand and rising costs. The index compares re-

This would mean an annual investment of approximately €180 million between public and private sectors. In Spain, the question is posed. How will the government face the property overhaul that is needed? According to the government, the renovation of real estate in the country must be a continuous path. Plans were set in 2014 to map out the required changes which according to the revision in 2017 - haven’t been achieved at the necessary rate. A fundamental element will be the development of a regeneration plan that creates a global framework that allows access to private invest-

tion to habitability and accessibility. For example, most buildings were
built prior to regulations regarding acoustic conditions, resulting in severe noise problems. And 40 per cent of buildings with four or more floors don’t have a lift, a stair-lift or ramps. Therefore - regardless of climate change - experts are in agreement that the rehabilitation process in Spain is essential. Renovations should have an integral impact on buildings, covering both energy deficiency, safety and comfortable living.

MOTORBIKE and moped sales revved up in Spain in 2019 to levels not seen for a decade, a trend industry experts say is partly due to a change in public thinking on the best ways to get around. Industry association ANESDOR said the sector registered sales of nearly 195,000 motorcyles and mopeds, more than 2,500 trikes and almost 5,000 light and heavy quads last year, 12 per cent up on 2018. “We touched bottom in 2013, when we hardly sold 100,000, and since then we have grown at a good pace,” commented ANESDOR Secretary General Jose Maria Riaño. “Increasingly more Spaniards get around on motorbikes and mopeds, and this has translated into very positive figures for the industry in 2019.” He attributed growth in the sector in part to the recovery of the Spanish economy in recent

Emissions are low at 103 g/km. Standard equipment includes alloy wheels, cruise control, digital radio, Bluetooth, smartphone integration,USB socket, auto-emergency braking and pedestrian detection. The Micra’s styling provides visual cachet and the cabin is a pleasant place to be, with a user-friendly dashboard, clear dials and well-placed switches. Good-quality trim materials add to the cabin ambience and good seat and steering wheel adjustments enable the driver to find a comfortable position. Front occupants get plenty of space, but the rear seats are a little cramped for taller passengers due to the low roof line. Boot space at 300 litres is among best in
class and can be expanded to just over 1,000 litres by folding the rear seats, earning the Micra top marks for practicality. In road use, the Micra handles well, with light precise steering and a light clutch action. It handles corners with composure thanks in part to a suspension setup which is a little more firm than most of its rivals. The hatchback sector is highly competitive, but the latest Micra now has a much stronger presence which gives it a more formidable edge and enhances its appeal to a wider age group.
