GAS CLOSES SCHOOL TWO-HUNDRED young students were evacuated from school after a toxic gas leak which left some pupils vomiting and suffering from itchy skin. Campoamor Infant and Primary School was closed on Monday and Tuesday after dangerous gases were detected, believed to be due to failures in the water bilge pump and the smoke extraction system. It was only when a few of the students became ill that the authorities were aware there was a problem, and the school was closed so that immediate repairs could be made. According to municipal technicians, the water and gas extraction system failed and the pit was surpassed by mud, water and hydrogen sulphide, a gas which is heavier than air, flammable, colourless, toxic and with a distinctive

A NEWBORN baby was still in an Elche hospital at the time of going to press, receiving treatment for cocaine poisoning. The two-month-old was initially taken to Vinilopò Hospital by its parents, after suffering what has been described as a strong episode of vomiting and difficulties breathing. Doctors reportedly carried out several
Baby coke poisoning tests, during which they detected drugs. The medical reports were sent to the Guardia Civil’s office, and although no action is currently being taken against the baby’s parents, the Prosecutor’s Office has asked the National Police to pre-
pare a report and take statements. During initial proceedings at Elche Court, it was heard that the child “could have consumed the cocaine accidentally, by simple contact with their surroundings.”

A spokesperson told a Spanish newspaper that “at such a young age, it is enough that someone who manipulated the narcotics touches a pacifier, bottle or any other object that may be in contact with the baby, so the poisoning occurs.” Once an assessment has been made, the relevant authorities are expected to decide if precautionary measures should be taken on the child’s guardianship.

No flood risk THE proposed location for the new Orihuela fire station is in an area where there is no risk of flooding, municipal mayor Emilio Bascuñana has stressed. The council head was speaking during a visit to the fire station located in the San Anton district, where he was joined by Diputacion de Alicante President Carlos Mazon, provincial Emergencies deputy Javier Sendra and Orihuela Emergencies
councillor Victor Valverde. The idea is for the station to move in the near future to new, more modern facilities. To that purpose Orihuela Council has offered the provincial government a municipal plot for the construction, the preliminary works due to get underway shortly. Bascuñana said the most ideal location was identified as in the Montepinar area on the crossroads between the La Matanza and Murada
highways in terms of communication in order for firefighters to get easily to neighbouring municipalities and to serve Orihuela. Thanking Orihuela’s council for its cooperation, Mazon said the provincial administration had studied the proposed location, and the process is now underway to make it available to the Diputacion “with the objective of improving in connectivity, strategic position and to modernise our facilities.”

The Holy Week of Torrevieja was officially announced with the unveiling of a new poster featuring the Blessed Virgin Mary, and in the background scenes from the Last Supper. THIS is the first time such images of María Santísima de la Victoria (Mary, Holy Host of Victory), have appeared on the poster, together with photographs of landmark sites in Torrevieja, such as the lagoon Salinera. Hundreds of people joined the General Board of Brotherhoods in the Museum to witness the unveiling at the weekend. The Semana Santa parades in Torrevieja have been declared as being of Provincial Tourist In-
terest, and this year take place from April 5 to 12. This spectacular event features public participation, and a rich artistic heritage. The origins of these celebrations date back to the 16th century. Incredible processions encompass and showcase the enchanting magic of Spanish culture and Catholic religious mystery. Muggers cuffed GUARDIA CIVIL have cuffed two youngsters suspected of a series of muggings in Los Alcazares. The Guardia launched an investigation in November following a spate of hits on passers-by in several streets. Initial investigations focused on the area where the muggings took place and interviews with the victims and possible witnesses. It became clear the attacks were usually at night and always at times when there were few people around, the victims walking on their own. The robbers crept up on the victims and surprised them, using violence to get what they were after, which was mainly mobiles and cash. Investigators managed to identify and locate the two young suspects: two Moroccan residents of Los Alcazares, both aged 20. The Guardia have linked the pair to five muggings in the municipality.

Planting benefits LOS ALCAZARES Council is planning to plant some 80 trees in the municipality’s public parks and gardens and green spaces. The local authority is investing some €90,000 trees of different species and sizes under a municipal Reforestation Plan and maintains there will be several benefits. Mayor Mario Cervero said studies show trees are a natural way to help prevent “avenues of water” from forming in torrential rains and the planting will be a measure for “fighting the major problem in Los Alcazares.” Cervero said the trees will create shaded areas and make it look more attractive. The trees, which include jacaranda and Mediterranean hackberry, will be planted in Calle Rio Alberche, Avenido Rio Nalon, the Mineria roundabout, the Los Narejos seafront promenade, Calle Pintor Miguel Angel, Calle Andromeda and Calle Diana.

Prowling Jaguars THE Jaguars Enthusiasts Club Costa Blanca got 2020 off to a great start with 70 members meeting for the first gathering of the year in Catral. After enjoying lunch in the glorious sunshine, it was off on a run organised by Dennis Wilson. Spokesperson Sandra Brook, said: “This led everyone through a natural park area, and finally to Crevillent to
the restaurant Las Palmeras where a number of members were already there after taking a more direct route. “Once all the big cats had been lined up in the more private car park, making a wonderful sight, lots of photos were taken as owners discussed their pride and joy. Then members grouped all together in the beautiful gardens around the swimming pool, where drinks were served from the outside bar. A message for UK nationals from HMA Hugh Elliott Happy New Year, and please make sure you are registered! CITIZENS’ rights have always been an important part of the negotiations on our exit from the EU. Indeed the citizens’ rights parts of the Withdrawal Agreement (the agreement about how we leave the EU) were one of the first areas to be agreed between the UK and the EU back in autumn 2018. The final text of the Withdrawal Agreement was agreed between the UK and the EU in October 2019 and there were no substantive changes to the citizens’ rights elements. In the UK, the process for approving the Withdrawal Agreement - or what many of us call ‘the Deal’ - is already well underway in parliament. The House of Commons approved the Withdrawal Agreement Bill - which is the domestic legislation that needs to be passed by parliament - by a majority of 99 on Thursday January 9. It is now being discussed in the House of Lords. If there are any amendments as a result of this, these will be considered by the House of Commons. The Bill will then be given ‘Royal Assent’ which means that it becomes law in the UK (to follow this in depth, see the UK Parliament website https://services.parliament.uk/Bills/201920/europea nunionwithdrawalagreement.html). In parallel, the European Parliament will also vote on the Withdrawal Agreement on January 29; approval by a simple majority would mean that the EP has also ratified ‘the Deal.’ These processes are a bit intricate, but the key point for you is that we are firmly on track to leave with a Deal on

As you know, the UK will be leaving the EU on January 31 and we are on course to leave with a Deal, so I wanted to explain some of the jargon around the parliamentary process and, crucially, what all of this means for British nationals living in Spain.

It is also important to note that your rights under the Withdrawal Agreement are completely independent of the negotiations about our future trade and security relationship with the EU. For British Nationals in Spain, the Withdrawal Agreement contains really important guarantees for you on citizens’ rights, such as the right to continue to live and work in Spain, continuation of healthcare and uprating of pensions. Those rights will be protected for as long as you remain
resident in Spain, provided that you are registered as a resident by December 31, 2020. That’s why it is so important to ensure that you, your family, your friends and indeed your neighbours are all correctly registered as resident here. CHINESE NEW YEAR: Traditional festival includes decorating homes with red lanterns.
Year of the rat THE Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is the most important traditional festival of the year Chinese calendar. In 2020 Chinese New Year falls on January 25 and according to the Chinese zodiac, this is the Year of the Rat. During this period mil-
lions of people travel to their places of origin to celebrate the holidays with their families. They clean their homes and put up red posters with poetic verses on their doors, and red lanterns. On the evening of the Spring Festival Eve, people set off fireworks and firecrackers, hoping to
cast away any bad luck and bring forth good luck and children often receive money wrapped in red packets in the hope of dispelling evil spirits. Various activities such as beating drums and striking gongs, as well as dragon and lion dances, are all part of the exciting festivities.
House of fun Madness will be ‘Catching the Ghost Train’ to perform a few dates in Spain this summer with the first show in Murcia, Friday 26 June. The show starts at 10pm. Shelter success €18,000 target PROMISING postChristmas animal shelter figures suggest more and more people in Torrevieja are responsible and aware of the idea of adopting an animal and giving it a second chance. This is the view of Torrevieja’s Department of Animal Protection which last week revealed half of its 32 dog kennels are empty, and there are just 11 cats in the municipal shelter. Likewise, responsible families have been found for some of the animals that had been in the shelter for more than three years, waiting for their perfect home. Councillor for Animal Protection, Concha Sala, said: “Due to the promotion made at Christmas time, people seem more aware of the idea of adopting

and giving a second chance before going out and buying a pet.” She thanked the volunteers who care for the animals as well as find them homes in Torrevieja and overseas, the families who adopt, and the people who follow her on social networks and share all of

CRESCENDO International Choir, well-known for their wonderful concerts and charity work, have pledged to help fund the cost of a new floor at Salt Church in Los Montesinos. Having visited the church in November 2019, members of the choir were impressed at the transformation of the former warehouse, which now includes an expansive stage, sound system and decor. Despite all that has been achieved in a relatively short time, the choir could see the 850m2 concrete floor still needed to be tiled costing €18,000. And to help with the refurbishment of the building, they have graciously offered to hold a special concert on Saturday, February 8 at 6pm (doors open from 5.30 pm). There will be a €5 entry
donation, with proceeds going to the Salt Church Tile Fund. Salt Church (formally known as Torrevieja Christian Fellowship), has now relocated, slightly inland, to premises at Calle Daya Nueva 12, 03187 Los Montesinos in the industrial estate behind La Torre Hotel off the main Los Montesinos Road. Gibraltar won’t negotiate with EU THERE seems to be some confusion between Gibraltar and the UK after Chief Minister Fabian Picardo gave an interview in which it appeared that he was looking for Gibraltar to join Schengen following Brexit. There was a response from a UK government spokesman (according to the BBC) saying that this was not possible and that any arrangement would have to be part of the UK-EU talks on future relations with the European Union. Since then, Mr Picardo has explained that he wasn’t looking for FORMER Secretary of State for International Trade under Theresa May and a staunch Brexiteer has taken the opportunity to give public advice to Boris Johnson with regards to trade deals with the USA. He considers that it is more than likely that there will be a considerable delay in setting in place a deal with the American federal government due to the British decision to support the EU ban on

As Gibraltar employs so many Spaniards and expatriates who live in Spain, any delay at the border could be harmful not only to the economy of Gibraltar (which also sees large numbers of tourists entering across the land border) but also to the local Spanish towns such as La Linea de la Concepcion, Alcaidesa and San Roque who rely on workers’ income. It would appear that Northern Ireland will receive special treatment as far as cross border movement with its neighbour the Republic and Gibraltar is anxious to see as little disruption with movement into Spain as possible.

MORE than 15,000 women were surveyed by Torrevieja and Vinalopo health departments last year as part of a universal programme against gender
violence. Torrevieja has been hailed as the most committed health department of the Valencian Community in recognition of its ‘active search’ for such
cases. According to figures released by the Department of Health, the Torrevieja department screened a total of 7,806 women compared to 4,073 on average in the rest of the centres in the Community. Vinolopo carried out 7,756 surveys. The result of the work carried out by these two departments resulted in the detection of 77 and 67 positive cases of gender violence in Torrevieja and Vinolopo respective-

Help the horses EASY HORSE CARE RESCUE CENTRE is now experiencing the most pressure they have ever been under in the 11 years they have been up and running. The financial situation is crippling the Foundation so much they have to let some of the workers go as they just cannot find the resources to pay their wages. There are so many rescued animals at the centre in need of care and to also helping in making a stand with the Police against animal cruelty. The Police have said that if EHCRC could not take these abused and abandoned equines then they could not pursue prosecutions. EHCRC cannot easily reduce the number of equines they have as due to working with the Police, the majority of the animals must remain at the Centre as they are part of the judicial process and
are not the Centre’s to give up for adoption. Those few that don’t fall under these conditions and could be adopted aren’t because they are not suitable for riding and come with long term and often costly health care needs which most people do not want. Adding insult to injury EHCRC have now been informed that strict measures need to be put in place in all their Charity Shops and they should now be treated like any other business and will therefore now be paying

Hidden chamber A PRE-GLADIATOR holding chamber and several artefacts have been unearthed by archaeologists digging at the Roman Cartegena amphitheatre.
Part of the find is reported to be an underground prison room, known as a carcer, which would have held gladiators and captive animals before they were released into the arena to fight to the death. Co-financed by the town hall and the national Ministry of Development, the project began in December before work begins on supporting the exterior walls. The group has fought for years in Andalucia on behalf of homeowners, victims of unscrupulous developers and ambiguous town halls, who faced losing homes that allegedly infringed planning regulations. Maura Hillen, AUAN president, explained that the association has advised affected Murcia property-owners to create a sister association. This has now been set up and is called Abusos Urbanisticos No Murcia (AUNMurcia). “We intend to act on the same lines as we have followed in Andalucia, working with the Administration and political parties in a constructive and friendly manner,” Hillen said. “People believe there are no planning issues in Murcia,” pointed out lawyer Gerardo Vazquez, who is a spokesman for AUAN and National Pro-Justice in Planning (CAJU). “I’m well aware that they do exist and this is not the first time that we have been to Murcia to try to assist the victims planning abuses,” Vazquez added.

Exciting new chapter with EWN JANUARY 2020 - A new year and a new start for Euro Weekly News reporter Tara Rippin as she takes on a new challenge covering North and South Costa Blanca. I am about to embark on a new chapter with Euro Weekly News after relocating from our head office in Fuengirola on the Costa Del Sol, and I could not be more excited! Having spent a wonderful 18 months working with a dedicated, hard-working and loyal team, it was time to move back to the Costa Blanca where I lived previously for 10 years, and take on a new challenge. Though it was incredibly hard to leave my colleagues, it was more of an ‘hasta luego’ rather than a goodbye, as I am fortunate enough to be able to remain part of the EWN family, working from another of our four offices. And having spent many years on the Costa Blanca, I have a good understanding of the area. I'm really excited about the prospect of living and working in Albir, it’s a beautiful place with a thriving community. To tell you a bit about myself, I have been a journalist for more than 25 years, starting my career with a local newspaper called The Melton Times, before moving on to the Loughborough Echo, and then back to The Melton Times as news editor. Similar to EWN, these publications were heavily involved in their communities, and provided a valuable voice for their readers. This is the wonderful advantage of writing for regional newspapers, and something I want to develop here on Costa Blanca. I first arrived in Spain a decade ago, initially on holiday as my parents had a home here. But like most expats, I fell in love with the people, the climate and the scenery, and made arrangements to stay permanently. Having dabbled in journalism here for a few months, I took a career change, but the love of writing eventually won over, and I applied for the position of writer with EWN. This meant a five-hour relocation, but it was worth it to be a part of such a great team at the head office, eventually being promoted to editor. Looking to the future now, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to make this my patch and truly become a part of the community, both professionally and personally. Flu epidemic claims life THIS winter’s flu epidemic has claimed its first mortal victim in Murcia. An 80-year-old died in Cartagena last week due to complications stemming from the virus. The epidemic is expected to reach a ‘medium’ level of virulence in the region this week, regional Health minister Manuel Villegas reported. He said there are currently 40 people hospitalised by flu in Murcia and there were some 2,400 new cases last week, showing that the epidemic is progressing in much the same way as it did last winter. This would mean that the number of cases con-
tinues to rise for another fortnight before progressively decreasing, and that the epidemic will not reach a high level. In reference to the rain, wind and snow storm Gloria brought to Murcia this week and the effects of the extreme weather on the region’s health services, Villegas said only a few health centres had had to close in high areas of the Altiplano zone because staff had been unable to get there. There were also appointment cancellations in the Caravaca and Yecla areas for the same reason. The Murcia Health department has 240,000 doses of flu vaccines and there are 261 vaccina-
tion centres. The aim is to “immunise people at the highest risk of developing complications in the case of suffering from flu and those who can transmit the illness to others who have a high risk of complications,” explained Murcia Public Health director Jose Carlos Vicente. Sectors of the population considered especially vulnerable include people aged over 60, pregnant women, anyone suffering from a chronic illness and health service staff. The flu vaccination is also recommended for anyone working in an essential service, such as firefighters and members of the security forces.

THOUSANDS of people took to the streets in towns on the Costa Blanca and in the rest of Valencia on Saturday to reject the Valencian Generalitat’s Law of Autonomous Multilingualism and to d e m a n d f re e d o m o f choice on language in the region’s schools and administrations. Busy time for Age Concern THE next couple of months will be a busy time for Age Concern Costa Calida. On Friday February 7 and Friday February 21 there will be chair exercising sessions from 10.30 to 11am at the charity’s Drop in Centre. The sessions are free to the over 50 age group. There will be an afternoon tea at the centre on Wednesday February 19 from 2 to 4pm and a lunch at a Puerto de Mazarron restaurant the following Wednesday. APPEAL: Police are appealing to the community of Orihuela to help find the mother of an abandoned baby.
Abandoned baby A NEWBORN baby with its umbilical cord still attached was found abandoned in a street in Orihuela on Friday afternoon, January 17. The discovery was made by a resident on Calle San Isidro, and local sources indicate that the baby was wrapped up in clothes
and left in the outside entrance of an apartment block. Once the emergency services were alerted, an ambulance was immediately deployed to the scene with the child then being taken to the Regional Hospital of Vega Baja in San Bartolomé. It is reported that the baby is in good
health. As Euro Weekly News understands, the police are now searching for the mother and have made an appeal to the local community in the hope of finding more about the baby’s family. At the time of going to press, the mother had not yet been found.
Nipped in the bud BUDDING marihuana growers’ plans were cut short when police stopped the van they were driving at speed in Benidorm, only to find 3,000 plants inside. It’s alleged they were moving the plants from one farm to another with the intention of replanting them. Officers’ suspicions were raised on Monday (January 20) when they spotted the two men ‘hurriedly’ loading about 30 boxes into the back of the van before fleeing at speed. A search of the house they had fled from reportedly led police to other drugs and a firearm. The Ecuadorian nationals, aged 43 and 45, were arrested and are due to appear in court this week.
A NEW prevention campaign ‘A change of heart is possible’ kicks off in Pinoso at the end of the month to help prepare young people for the potential dangers of addiction and other issues. Through a range of activities aimed at youths, teachers and families, the objective is to raise awareness about addiction to drink, drugs and alcohol, eating disorders, the risks of social networks, gambling and coexistence in the classroom. There will be different workshops and activities for different age groups, and guest speakers will share their experiences. These include Sofia Christ, an ex-addict who now collaborates with Triora Alicante Clinic offering addiction therapy support. The project has been organised by the Department of Education, Culture and Youth and will run from January 31 to February 28.

TORREVIEJA was among one of the areas where winds of 100 km/h and pounding six-metre high waves caused significant damage, especially to beaches and seafront walkways. The worst hit zone was the new Punta Margalla promenade. Emergencias Torrevieja reported the force of the water dragged away rocks and stones, the waves coming right up over the path and getting as far as the door of one of the area’s bars. The extreme wintery weather also cut off some streets, and brought down fences, walls, traffic lights, street lights, and

signs, although there were no reports anyone was hurt in the town. Guardamar’s seafront also took a serious battering. The mayor, Jose Luis Saez reported that a lifeguard’s tower on the Viveros beach was left leaning at a 15 degree angle after the sea caused significant subsidence around its base. The area around it has been fenced off in case the tower comes down. Saez said it was a case of waiting until the weather conditions improved to assess just how much damage there is to the area and how much will have to be done to put it right.
In Orihuela a 26-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman were injured when a palm tree came down on a vehicle early in the morning on the CV-91 at the entrance to the town. The car behind them was unable to swerve and went into the back of the first vehicle. Both the accident victims required treatment at the Vega Baja Hospital. Also in Orihuela, some 10,000 local residents were left without power from first thing Monday morning after two pylons came down. The power outage affected not only homes, but also buildings including the court, leading to staff being sent home. Again, the municipality’s beaches were left in a pretty bad state, the waves dragging away large areas of sand. Classes were suspended in schools in all three municipalities on Monday. Alicante prohibited outdoor activities while the extreme weather lasted. The provincial capital’s authorities also closed parks and prohibited bathing. Elche meanwhile activated the Homeless Persons’ Emergency Plan in collaboration with Local Police and the DYA and Caritas associations. Police and DYA patrols accompanied homeless people who voluntarily opted to sleep in a Caritas-run shelter. In Pinoso, the Council issued an official statement on Sunday, announcing the suspension of classes in all schools as the

municipality was placed on red alert for snow. All parks, gardens and sports facilities were also shut on Monday morning, along with the ecopark. After analysing the situation, Mayor Lazaro Azorín, Security Councillor, Cesar Pérez, and the Chief Inspector of the Local Police, Mohedano Quintin, decided to activate the security plan on Sunday at noon while Pinoso remained on red alert. Police stockpiled salt to be spread in case of snow and officers warned
residents to be extra vigilant. Pérez and Azorín appealed to the public to take precautions and only leave home if absolutely necessary. The storms caused yet more chaos for passengers planning to travel in or out of Alicante airport following last week’s fire. The airport closed at 1pm on Sunday and remained closed on Monday, flights having to be diverted to Corvera in Murcia and to Valencia.

€3.27m to modernise THE Valencian Institute of Business Competitiveness (Ivace) has allocated a total of €3.27 million for the
improvement and modernisation of 23 industrial estates in the Vega Baja. The investment is part of the calls for aid for projects of ‘improvement, modernisation and provision of infrastructure and services in polygons, industrial areas and technological enclaves.’ Since 2017, 16 municipalities in the region have benefited from such schemes. The general director of Ivace, Júlia Company, said Orihuela, Algorfa, Los Montesinos,
Rojales, Dolores, Torrevieja, Catral and Guardamar del Segura have also been granted aid worth €342,000 to carry out street lighting renovation projects, as well as the implementation of electric vehicles and electric charging stations. Triumphant marching More than 15,000 people joined the protests in Orihuela against the new law that will demand the use of Valencian in all classrooms in the region. In other locations of the Valencian Community, the demonstrations were also favourable, as protesters took to the streets in droves. The fight against the linguistic law of Ximo Puig leader of the Socialist government in the community - was an outright success. Following the massive response, opposing politicians are hopeful that president of the Generalitat will agree to a new law. Protesters defended the right of their children to ‘study in their chosen language. Especially Spanish, as it is the mother language of many students.’ The approved Law of Multilingualism would be implemented first in Primary schools and extended to all levels of ed-
ucation in 2021. Parents and political leaders headed the demonstrations, as they demanded a free education as recognised by the Spanish Constitution. They also highlighted that there is no country where children cannot receive education in their mother language, especially as it’s the official language of the State. Organisers of the protest warned against the discrimination and spoke about possible academic failure. They argued that Spanish is among the most important languages on the planet and defended the importance of family decisions. In response, Ximo Puig assured that the Law of Multilingualism is an open proposal that has a simple objective: that Valencian children learn Spanish, Valencian and English by the end of their education.

A STERILISATION programme to control the number of feral felines has kicked off in Albatera, and volunteers are being sought to help out. Lolibel Berná, Councillor for Health, said: “The council has already begun with the sterilisation of the feline colonies of the town. For this purpose there has been an agreement made with a veterinary clinic which is carrying out the sterilisations.” In addition, she stressed that “a census of all sterilised cats is being carried out to control the feline population,” and “the creation of a zoological nucleus that houses all cats is being managed, so that they are in a specific area and are not wandering around the town, with the risks that entails.” The colonies are controlled by the CES Albatera Animal Protective Association, whose members are authorised for the care and feeding, through dry feed, of cats. Berná added “We want the public to be aware of the feeding of these animals and not put down food remains for them, only dry feed to ensure hygiene.” Anybody who wants to volunteer must inquire at the town hall, where you will be given a t-shirt and an authorised feeder card. This is because the Local Police can sanction anyone who is not registered and authorised by the town hall.

Curtains up ONCE again, the 17 Days of University Theatre in Bajo Segura ‘Muñoz Remedies’ will be staged by the Theatre School of Los Montesinos every Saturday from February 1 to 29. For 17 years, the different groups of the University of Alicante, as well as local and regional groups, have gathered on these weekends, meaning members of the public can enjoy

Councillor José Manuel Butrón, said: “For another year the town hall of Montesinos makes a firm commitment to culture and theatre and has enhanced the great work carried out by the Municipal Theatre School with the different groups.” He also highlighted the

Shamed officials PLAQUES bearing the names of mayors of Torrevieja who have been convicted of corruption must be removed, the town hall has been urged.
“We cannot consent in our fight against corruption, that in our villages honorary plaques are maintained or restored to persons who committed
corrupt practices, and who also did so in the development of their institutional positions,” said Rose Pérez Garijo, the Minister of Participation, Transparency Cooperation and Democratic Quality. She has written to Torrevieja Town Hall, appealing to them to “remove plaques and plates on which the name of people who held public office and who were sentenced for corruption cases.” Some had already been removed following a resolution approved in 2015, and later re-erected. Clinic pledge THE health department of Torrevieja has promised to build a much-needed second health centre in Orihuela, if the government agrees to extend the current contract. The bid is part of the management company Ribera Salud’s strategic plan for 2021 to 2026, but the existing concession ends in October 2021 and the Ministry of Health has made public its intention to revert the responsibility of Torrevieja Hospital and its departments to public management after this date. Despite this, Orihuela Council is currently looking for land in Orihuela Costa on which to build a new clinic, according to Spanish newspaper reports. The current centre serves more than 300,000 users, and is relatively small. The council is eager to redistribute the load between two clin-

Ribera Salud claims that, because it has not received official notification of the termination of the contract in 2021, it will ‘continue to work on long-term projects’ such as this. Local litter louts RESIDENTS of Orihuela are being urged to use waste containers responsibly after a dead cat and other rubbish was dumped near containers in Calle Cabo de la Nao. A post by Orihuela Costa neighbourhood association, AVCRL Asociación de vecinos Cabo Roig y Lomas, read: ‘Please refrain from leaving ANY type of refuse or garden waste in this area as it is now for the exclusive use of car parking.’ Locals are asked to use the containers situated across the road. Tackling the move A NEW fire station looks set to be built in the Orihuela municipality, which will serve a number of towns and villages in the Vega Baja area, following an announcement last week. Although a date and budget has not yet been revealed, Orihuela City Council has agreed to transfer a plot of land in Montepinar to the Provincial Council of Alicante, and technical preparation work is underway. President of the provincial council, Carlos Mazón, said the new station, which will be located very close to the A7 Alicante-Murcia highway, aims to “improve connectivity and strategic positioning.”

A better future PUPILS, parents and staff at a Pinoso school dug deep over Christmas to support children with disabilities, and last week presented a welcomed cheque for €1,550. A fundraising market and raffle was held by La Cometa School in December in aid of the Association Pro-Decreased Psychics of Elda (Asprodis), a non-profit association that works to improve the quality of life of people with disabilities. And last week, director
of the Municipal school, Ana Bonmatí, together with the president and two members of the Association of Family Members of Schoolchildren (AFE), visited the team at Elda, to hand over the proceeds. Aprodis was founded in 1970, following parents’ concerns about the
welfare of their children with intellectual disabilities. They joined together to share and promote a common interest: to obtain a better present and future for their children and for all those who joined in the future. The objective is the full social integration of people with disabilities, and
over the last 40 years Aprodis has played a major part in the creation and enhancement of services necessary to make this happen. The association currently serves 365 people with disabilities throughout the Middle Vinalopó region, with a workforce of 114. CREDIT: vivir.pinoso.org

Scourge of the streets ARMED with 22,000 bags and 200 bottles, Torrevieja Council has launched its campaign against dog mess. Pet owners are being urged to use the bags and bottles to clean up poo and urine - a scourge the city council is keen to be rid of. While the use of the bags is obvious, councillor for Urban Cleanliness, Carmen Gómez Candel, said “the purpose of the distribution of these bottles is for pet owners to fill them with water and white vinegar in equal parts, to have them in their possession, prepared, when they walk their dogs to clean up after your animals urinate.” She added: “The purpose of this novel proposal is not only to try to remove dirt from the affected area, but also to end the urine trail.”

FOLLOWING a trend set by oth er supermarkets, Lidl which employs 15,000 people and has nearly 600 stores in Spain is about to launch readytoeat food after running tests in four stores. The meals themselves will cost between €1.19 and €2.99 and are being introduced as Spanish consumers change their way of eating and are now more open to enjoy pre prepared fresh food. There will be six cold and eight hot dishes introduced as new stores are opened and will eventually be on sale across the nation.

EU has trade surplus A REPORT compiled by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW Kiel) and the ifo Institute Munich has concluded that the European Union has a trade surplus with itself of €307 billion rather than the zero it should be. They contend that simple calcula tion errors could not possibly account for such a huge amount which grows annually, but is likely to be the result of massive tax fraud which affects every member state. According to their estimates, such practices could have cost the EU

trade surplus with itself of €357 bil lion, so this new analysis suggests that 86 per cent of the global devia tion is solely due to the EU and points a finger at the UK due in part to the way in which it prepares its trade data using small random sam ples only. Britain however battled for many years with the Carousel Fraud prob lem which saw goods imported from the EU without paying VAT and then companies selling those goods and charging VAT , finally closing down prior to paying the UK Customs and absconding with the money.
AFTER an initial test, Spain’s largest energy company Iberdrola has signed an agreement with the Avia service station network to in stall fast charging points for elec tric cars in 100 of Avia’s sites. Initially, they were tested in just seven provinces, but now it is ex pected that they will roll out into the majority of Spanish provinces and there will be a total of 500 fast chargers in the 100 service sta tions to ensure customer satisfac tion. Long term, Iberdrola aims to have 25,000 recharging points across the nation.
LEGALLY SPEAKING How to get 3/5 majority? Our community is considering a vote to limit shortterm holiday rentals, but how can we ob tain the votes of ‘threefifths of the members’ when fewer than half that number ever attend the AGM? I raised the question with our administrator who kindly explained in detail about ‘members present or by proxy’ and the first and second calling of the meeting. Can you confirm her explanation? S D (Costa Blanca) Yes, we can. We tend to use the YOU AND THE term ‘members’ LAW IN SPAIN too loosely. Here is the detailed picture. The announcement of the AGM should specify ‘first calling’ and then ‘second calling’ usu ally half an hour later. If 51 per cent of members and proxies are not present, the AGM cannot be held on first calling. At the second calling, valid decisions can be voted by the members and proxies present. So a threefifths vote of those present will suffice to pass resolutions. The members who did not attend can protest the vote within 30 days after being informed. Note that the law also spec ifies that this majority must include the ‘cuotas’ or partici pation shares as well as the number of owners.

Fewer closures HMV, one of the UK music scene’s best known stores, was saved from financial ruin by Canadian firm Sunrise Records but with a cost of closures. However thanks to renegotiated rent deals with landlords a further six shops have been saved.
Reduce risk WITH a number of major catastrophes over the best three years, insurance giant MAPFRE has been responsible for a number of large pay outs due to its reinsurance division. It is now reviewing this practice in order to reduce risks.
Pension threshold THE UK Treasury is prepar ing to give tax relief to those earning more than £110,000 (€120,000) in or der to try to stem the early retirement of senior doc tors and consultants in the
NHS. It is suspected that the threshold will be in creased to £150,000 (€165,000), as this would help the majority of senior doctors. It will also benefit other
high income earners, but the main problem that the Treasury is trying to fix is the decision by many doc tors to either retire early or work parttime to reduce taxation.

The developers would be able to recover their costs over a period of years (with a reasonable profit mar gin) and once this has been done, the properties would then be handed over to the State as assets to man age.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I REALLY could not have agreed more with actor Lawrence Fox, when he stated on last week’s Question Time that this whole racism question is becoming decidedly boring. I also loved his description of racist accusers being a bunch of ‘sanctimonious, humorless, preachy victimhood-peddling mediocrities that fill our public spaces.’ Brilliant, and so true. These people that find racism under every stone are the biggest racists of all. The United Kingdom is not America. Back in the 50’s and 60’s, when I was a lad, we had not even heard the word racism. When groups like the wonderful Platters, The Drifters, and performers with the talents of Johnny Mathis and Nat King Cole came along, we truly never saw colour. All we saw were great artists. The problems began to arise in the UK when the early black immigrants shied away from integration and began to create their own ‘tribal’ neighbourhoods, thereby setting themselves apart and consequently remaining an unknown and somewhat suspicious entity among the indigenous population. However, over the years with better education and with later

So boring... generations becoming more integrated, the British populace has tried its utmost to accept all as equal, and even introduced strict laws of the land to make sure that racial discrimination is in no way tolerated in the country. But that simply wasn’t good enough was it. The wingers, who either out of pure hatred or simply looking for excuses, still endeavour to put the blame for a whole multitude of their misfortunes on racism. Because many of their accusations are completely unfounded or frivolous, it’s made people angry, actually creating racism where it never before existed. This latest episode concerning the Duchess of Sussex is a typical example. The British people welcomed this young lady with open arms. Disregarding the despicable trolls, the fact that she was of mixed race was not an issue. Even the evangelistic wedding service, which was utterly unfamiliar and unorthodox to most of the British public, was accepted and celebrated as a part of their new royal family member’s heritage. Even when it became apparent that her main circle of friends - Oprah, Serena Williams, and the Obamas were all black, and she
was at loggerheads with her white father, the British public still never harped on about what could easily have be interpreted as her own racist leanings. But when it all started to go wrong, instead of blaming the fact this selfish and ambitious young lady’s dream of being a princess was not quite the ‘leading role’ she had in mind, the ‘usual suspects’ all began screaming that she was being forced to make her decisions because of racism! One accuser actually stated on TV that because she was depicted as the instigator of the Sussex decision to withdraw from the Royal family, it was inferring that all black women were aggressive and manipulating and therefore the insinuations were racist! No, I’m afraid those who stir up racism at every opportunity are themselves the true problem. The sooner we lay the blame where it truly belongs, the better. RECENT research showing that Neanderthals came to spend the summer on the south coast of the Iberian peninsula puts a new gloss on package holidays in the sun. Thirty thousand years ago, when Europe was going through an icy period and snow covered practically everything north of the River Ebro, hominoids searched for somewhere warmer to give them a greater chance of survival. We now know that Neanderthals ‘holidayed’ in what is today the south of Portugal and Spain after their most recent footprints were found in a quarry in Gibraltar. WE are based in Horley town centre, just five minutes’ drive from Gatwick airport and a short walk to Horley mainline railway station. On offer is a range of cars starting with the small everyday cars and up to the family-sized vehicles to include manual and au-

DEAR Euro Weekly, It is such a shame for the royal couple, Harry and Meghan. Am I the only person that feels sorry for them? I think what they are doing is very admirable, surely they should be allowed to chose how to live their life or how much time they put into ‘royal’ duties. Maybe Harry knows something we don’t. There seem to be many questions left unanswered about the family. What really happened to Diana? What on earth is going on with Andrew? I mean is Prince Charles even Harry’s real Dad? I am sure it is James Hewitt. Poor Meghan, fairytales tell us that it’s every little girl’s dream to marry a handsome prince and she has done this and now faces all this backlash. Surely she can reappear in the cast of Suits if she wants to make her own money and Harry can stay at home with baby Archie. Anyway, leave the young couple alone and give them some space. From what I have understood, albeit with my limited knowledge of Spanish politics, is that the left parties are in government. However, it seems the Spanish aren’t missing much with the other parties. VOX is a radical party that defends animal abuse and hunting. They also have no respect for other cultures and on top of everything they are misogynistic. I say thank gosh that they didn’t get the top spot. DEAR Euro Weekly News, Is it sad to see another high profile person falling prey to the evil of social media or is it just their own stupid fault? Yes, I totally agree that the person blackmailing Malaga coach Victor Sánchez is a complete scumbag, but there is no reason to sack the man for having a bit of fun. He wasn’t hurting anybody apart from his own pride. Really the video is not that shocking and not anything that most people haven’t seen on TV or film. I am glad they managed to get to the source and arrest him. They should have a look at his phone and post some of his private photos online as part of his punishment. As most of the sunny coast rarely have to suffer such extreme weather we have to ask that with such a specific infrastructure can they ever be prepared? Cataluña’s regional government went as far as banning outdoor activities in Girona and Barcelona, while Alicante Airport was forced to temporarily close, disrupting more than 200 flights. In southern Alicante, scenes of flooding and street debris reminded residents of the massive storm that hit them in September, when rivers burst their banks and caused widespread damage to property and crops. With the financial infrastructure of these coastal areas dependent on their beautiful beachfronts and import and export of seafood, the installation of storm surge barriers could provide protection from flooding during extreme weather events. By using a movable barrier it can still allow a flow of either maritime traffic or even natural movements of water to and fro. Many of the local governments already have beach regeneration projects to hinder erosion or regenerate the coastline. Future housing construction projects may need to take into consideration the ability to withstand stronger winds and the use of stronger or different materials. At any rate, Spanish cities will have to be built in a way that goes against what appears to be their nature, using the fullness of human ingenuity not to trample the earth and replace natural with the artificial, but to engineer both nature and the land in a way that emphasises their codependence.

BARRY DUKE THE fella in the woo shop stared intensely at me, then declared ‘you’ve attracted a mischievous spirit.’ Given the extent of my deep scepticism regarding all things supernatural I simply shrugged and said there has to be a logical explanation for the odd things that have been happening in our apartment lately When I first visited Decor Etnia, it was to buy a silver bracelet encrusted with my favourite stone, turquoise. I bought it to match a ring and a belt buckle (I do like shiny things.) The owner, Bartolomé, admired the ring, and agreed the bracelet complemented it perfectly. I saw Bartolomé again when I went into his store to price a lamp I fancied. He told me the cost, then asked why I wasn’t wearing my ring. Dejectedly I told him I’d lost it somewhere in the apartment, and despite searching everywhere it was nowhere to be found. That’s when he gave me the ‘mischievous spirit’ baloney,

WEIRD GOINGS-ON: Missing rings and broken keys. but assured me would turn up within three days if I allowed him to perform a ritual that involved me holding a copper Tibetan singing bowl in my left palm. When one runs a mallet around the bowl it gives off an unearthly sound, and I stood there, feeling exceedingly foolish, and the word ‘poppycock’ kept going
through my mind as he did his Harry Potter thing. On the night of the third day the ring turned up - in a bag of peas in my freezer! I stood transfixed, wondering how the hell it had gotten into a packet I’d not touched in months. There was no logical explanation, but my deeply ingrained
scepticism would never allow me to entertain the idea this was the work of ‘a mischievous spirit.’ Then came the inexplicable incident with a steam iron. On discovering it in the kitchen sink I demanded an explanation from my husband Marcus. The reply I got was ‘oh, the bloody thing leaks, so I just dumped it there.’ I replied
‘OK, I’ll toss it in the dumpster when I go out shopping.’ After checking that it had indeed sprung a leak, I disposed of it. Imagine my shock when I returned to find the iron back in the sink. When Marcus returned I told him what had happened. He looked at it and said ‘yep, that’s the faulty one. You must have dumped the one that works.’ That’s when I went into full-on Inspector Clouseau mode. ‘Let’z get ziz straight. You put ze faulty iron in ze zink, then used ze spare one. What next?’ Marcus replied ‘I put it back in the utility room before I went out.’ We checked but there was no iron there. All we had was the leaky one. Things got even weirder when I took the pooches out for a walk, but couldn’t get back into the apartment because I only had half the front door key. The day before it was perfectly intact. Clearly it had snapped in half indoors, but how? And where’s the missing bit? I’m now half-expecting a disembodied voice to chuckle and say ‘calm down dear, I’m only playing with you.’ If I do I’m calling an exorcist.

Donating blood in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics.
In Spain, Blood Components and Services are provided by 17 Regional Blood Transfusion Services. Despite their autonomous operations management, every regional service is fully incorporated into a unique and common Public National Health System, supplying a cohesive blood transfusion care to all citizens, residents, and visitors in Spain based on 100 per cent voluntary and non-remunerated blood donation. For more general information, visit www.msps.es. Anyone who has lived continuously in the UK between 1980 and 1996 (a minimum of one year) will not be able to donate blood in Spain due to the risk of transmitting mad cow disease. Similarly, there are restrictions if you have received a blood transfer in the UK. However, each region may have different rules about donation. Call the donation helpline on 935 573 500. Alternatively, visit www.donorsang.gencat.cat to find out if you are eligible. If you are eligible, you can give blood at your local hospital, or via the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja) at one of their clinics, or in one of their mobile units. You can check dates and locations by visiting www.donarsangre.org. A donor card is not necessary to give blood. On the first visit you will have to provide DNI, NIE, passport or a driving licence. If you are already registered in the Blood Bank, you only need a donor card or a document with your name and surname. The process of blood donation takes just 10 minutes in which 450 ml are collected (equating to 10 per cent of the total blood circulation of an adult person). Despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain blood is through the generosity of the public. The blood is carefully screened for disease to make sure it is safe. After a tattoo, you must wait four months to be eligible to donate. After surgery, the exclusion period will depend on the type of intervention. After minor surgical procedures, you cannot donate blood for seven days or until you are fully recovered. After undergoing major surgery, you will not be able to donate blood for four months. The rarest blood type is AB, present in 1 per cent of Caucasians, according to research by the America Red Cross. Blood transfusions are carried out daily in Spanish hospitals with more than 6,200 patients being given them, of whom almost a quarter are fighting cancer and a similar figure receiving transfusions during or after surgery. Restaurateurs argue that people go to restaurants to treat themselves, stating this as the reason for not putting an apple or an orange on their menu. Invaluable discovery RESEARCHERS at the University of Alabama have uncovered what could be key information to fully understand Alzheimer’s. According to their investigations the disease is activated by the defective signalling of norepinephrine. It is widely accepted in the scientific community that the disease is triggered by the accumulation of amyloid proteins in the brain. These proteins alter another protein known as tau, which in its altered state is toxic to neurons.However, it was unknown what connected the two processes.
The new study has revealed that amyloid proteins stop norepinephrine from signalling in brain neurons, and instead redirect the signal to tau proteins. This signal alters the proteins which in turn begin attacking and killing neurons, subsequently causing Alzheimer’s. The research provides
valuable information on the mechanisms underlying the toxicity of amyloid proteins, which also explains the failure of previous clinical trials. Scientists can now use the discovery to design future medications and find a way to block the damaging redirected brain signals.

Rockabilly band live IT seems that the Spanish music scene includes a huge selection of different music, not just that which has developed on the Iberian Peninsula, but influences from all over the world have inspired Spanish musicians. Although most popular in the USA, the style known as rockabilly has a strong following in Spain and apart from American and British bands, there are regular appearances from quality Spanish bands, amongst
them The Hellhates. Coming from Murcia, they were formed in 2004 and have created a mix of rockabilly, psychobilly, country, surf and punk and have released several discs during their time together. They will be appearing at the Eras De La Sal, Torrevieja on Saturday June 13 and their shows are always quite an event.
Celebrating a 10th Anniversary T H E f i r s t p e r f o rmance by the Murcia Symphony Orchestra in February will take place at the Victor Villegas Auditorium in Murcia City at 8pm on Friday February 7. They will be per forming the Requiem by Verdi, with the participation of the Orpheus Choir which is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a specially created anniversary branch of the choir with guests from around the region. The orchestra will be under the direction of Virginia Martínez with soloists still to be announced. Tickets for the concert will cost from €12 to €20. Other classical concerts will be held at the same venue during the year.

SUZANNE MANNERS AFTER a hiatus of several years I am back (cue evil laugh)... expounding and eulogising on subjects of which I profess to be an expert while cunningly placing my ignorance, like decades old spice jars (Cardamom...really!!!), at the back of the kitchen cupboard that is my mind. Writers have permission to hold their readers hostage, they bind us hand and foot with words instead of duct tape, while regaling us with anecdotes and inane soundbites. It is a most glorious vanity and one I am overjoyed to be engaged in again. So... greetings Dear Reader, wonderful to be here again. Did you miss me? Vanity is one of the seven deadly sins. Easy I unfriend them and decide to go with my original quote I put on FB which said, ‘Please do not ask to be my friend. I have enough friends. In fact I have friends I haven’t even used yet! But should a vacancy occur I will let you know.’ Anyone ‘phoned Vodafone ES customer service lately? Service is fine but the music they play whilst you are on hold is absolutely crazy. It is the loudest rock music I’ve ever heard. I told the operator and they laughed and said ‘I know, everyone says that.’ If everyone agrees, change it! If you have a Vodafone account ring them and tell me what you think. The same goes for shops and restaurants. I find the music in shops is chosen by the staff and most of them are youngsters so, of course, it’s going to be thumping dance music. Restaurants are a little more difficult because a lot of people go for the food and entertainment. The problem is when you go for dinner with a couple of friends and the background music is so loud you can’t hold a conversation. Anyway, just sort it out please.

There is, however, freedom in this release from vanity and the pressure to look good and with this release the focus on skill and technique begins to override all else. The finished drawings are hilarious, but touching in their vulnerability, creating a wonderful and irreverent display along our corridors of learning. Most importantly they make people laugh. The creation of all forms of art is a vanity. As much as the artist may profess to an altruistic desire to send a message or to create a better world, ultimately, in truth, the act of creation is a vain one that benefits the creator first and
foremost. The pleasure from seeing my words in print is immense, a frisson of pride laced with smug satisfaction. “Look at me. How special I am.” Art historians have written about El Greco’s angst , Van Gogh’s expendable appendages or Munch’s screams, but in reality they painted because it afforded them pleasure, because they chose to. Michaelangelo may have believed that God told him to go forth and chip away but it was his vanity that released David from his marble tomb... and thank goodness for that vanity because without it our world would be an uglier place. So in conclusion let us celebrate the sin of vanity, but not too much, we wouldn’t want to let him get above himself now would we. MOTORBIKE and moped sales revved up in Spain in 2019 to levels not seen for a decade, a trend industry experts say is partly due to a change in public thinking on the best ways to get around. Industry association ANESDOR said the sector registered sales of nearly 195,000 motorcyles and mopeds, more than 2,500 trikes and almost 5,000 light and heavy quads last year, 12 per cent up on 2018. “We touched bottom in 2013, when we hardly sold 100,000, and since then we have grown at a good pace,” commented ANESDOR Secretary General Jose Maria Riaño. “Increasingly more Spaniards get around on motorbikes and mopeds, and this has translated into very positive figures for the industry in 2019.” He attributed growth in the sector in part to the recovery of the Spanish economy in recent

ANESDOR said growing competition from vehicles like electric scooters and ordinary bicycles could make it difficult for the industry to reach pre-economic downturn totals once more.

‘ Nothing Like We Remember Him’ Formula One’s most successful driver has been described as ‘altered and deteriorated’ six years after his tragic skiing accident, in 2013. LEADING neurosurgeon Nicola Acciari has warned that Schumacher will be ‘very different’ to what fans around the world remember. The seven-time champion has not been seen in public since the devastating event. Following the brutal fall, the former Ferrari driver was in a long term coma, after suffering severe brain injuries - as his head collided with a rock whilst skiing off-piste in the French Alps. Acciari mentions that Schumacher will have ‘deteriorated organic, muscular and skeletal structure.’ The seven-time world champion has since been cared for at his Lake Geneva mansion by his wife Corinna and their two children Gina-Marie, 22, and Mick, 20. Health updates from the family over the years have been minimal. Former Ferrari Manager, Jean Todt stated that Michael was ‘still fighting’ after visiting him last year. “I’m always careful with such
