The owners Franco and Jody had recently renovated the outdoor terrace into a beautiful and popular venue and the Oceana Club in Benissa had become famed as the perfect venue for live music and entertainments for anyone in Calpe, Moraira or Benissa Costa. Their poignant message on Facebook reading: ‘We lost our dining terrace’ received hundreds of messages and shares within minutes. But not only that, just hours after reading about the news on Euro Weekly News, Good Morning Britain then televised the story! A flabbergasted Oceana Club posted: “We made Good Morning Britain for all the wrong reasons. We are all devastated, but totally overwhelmed with the response from friends, clients offering help and best wishes. Over 1,000 messages,

A message for UK nationals from HMA Hugh Elliott Happy New Year, and please make sure you are registered!
CITIZENS’ rights have always been an important part of the negotiations on our exit from the EU. Indeed the citizens’ rights parts of the Withdrawal Agreement (the agreement about how we leave the EU) were one of the first areas to be agreed between the UK and the EU back in autumn 2018. The final text of the Withdrawal Agreement was agreed between the UK and the EU in October 2019 and there were no substantive changes to the citizens’ rights elements. In the UK, the process for approving the Withdrawal Agreement - or what many of us call ‘the Deal’ - is already well underway in parliament. The House of Commons approved the Withdrawal Agreement Bill which is the domestic legislation that needs to be passed by parliament - by a majority of 99 on Thursday January 9. It is now being discussed in the House of Lords. If there are any amendments as a result of this, these will be considered by the House of Commons. The Bill will then be given ‘Royal Assent’ which means that it becomes law in the UK (to follow this in depth, see the UK Parliament website https://services.parlia ment.uk/Bills/2019-20/europea nunionwithdrawalagreement.html). In parallel, the European Parliament will also vote on the Withdrawal Agreement on January 29; approval by a simple majority would mean that the EP has also ratified ‘the Deal.’ These processes are a bit intricate, but

As you know, the UK will be leaving the EU on January 31 and we are on course to leave with a Deal, so I wanted to explain some of the jargon around the parliamentary process and, crucially, what all of this means for British nationals living in Spain.

It is also important to note that your rights under the Withdrawal Agreement are completely independent of the negotiations about our future trade and security relationship with the EU. For British Nationals in Spain, the Withdrawal Agreement con-
tains really important guarantees for you on citizens’ rights, such as the right to continue to live and work in Spain, continuation of healthcare and uprating of pensions. Those rights will be protected for as long as you remain resident in Spain, provided that you are registered as a resident by December 31, 2020. That’s why it is so
important to ensure that you, your family, your friends and indeed your neighbours are all correctly registered as resident here. RESIDENTS have lodged a complaint about a hearse they claim has been parked in Benidorm’s bullring for the last two months. No explanation has been given as to why it is there, but the mayor, Antonio Pérez, said work will be carried out at the facility in the next few months.

Green zone MORE than €800,000 will be invested in the Plaza de la Ciudad de la Justica in Alicante. The city council has pledged to create an 8,000 sqm green zone which will serve as a recreational area with a park, pond and a large plant species.
First fair ALICANTE Fair Institution started its 2020 trade fair activity with the 17th edition of Viveralia, the International Professional Exhibition of the Ornamental and Related Plants, this week. During the three-day event, which ends tomorrow, Friday, January 24, 50 exhibitors filled the 13,000 sqm space.
Fewer kids A STUDY by students at Alicante University shows that more and more women are deciding not to have children, or putting their studies and professional development first. It found that the search for job stability and sufficient financial resources to support children are behind the decision to delay or discard motherhood.

CARNIVAL TIME One of the biggest events in Alicante’s calendar kicks off next month with the launch of the Alicante Carnival 2020. FESTIVAL time is deep rooted in Alicante’s culture comprising of street parties, with its spectacular finale on Sábado Ramblero (Saturday before Ash Wednesday). Fun is the day’s theme when thousands of people come to the city dressed in their most original, quirky or lavish traditional, gala garments, exchanging their daily outfits for those of superheroes, princesses, wizards, fairies, infants, older people, trolls or zombies. Festivities begin on Thursday, February 20, at 9.30pm with the spectacular Dijous de Gras and Correfoc at Rambla Méndez Núñez, during which there will be
a total ban on parking in the area. But the carnival is officially launched the following day, Pregón Friday, in the Plaza del Carmen. The highlight of the event takes place on Saturday, February 22, with the Ramlero. Shows for the whole family will be held throughout the day, with workshops, storytelling and other activities. February 23 is Carnival Sunday, and a range of activities have been scheduled for children and adults in the Esplanada. The well-known Trial and Procession of the Pelele will depart from

Shelter smash EIGHT firefighters together with Local Police and other emergency services worked for more than an hour to release a young motorist who was trapped inside his car after colliding with a bus shelter metres from an urbanisation in Alicante City. The crash, the cause of which is under investigation, occurred in Saldar Road in the early hours of Monday morning and nobody else was involved. According to witnesses, the vehicle was travelling near Calle Musician Anton Roch when it left the road and smashed into the perimeter fencing and public transport shelter. Once freed from the wreckage, the injured motorist was taken to hospital ‘with serious injuries.’ Local Police officers carried out a breathalyser test at the scene, which was negative. As a result of the smash, the car was a write off.

Marking the official end of the carnival and the beginning of Lent will be the Burial of the Sardine on Wednesday, February 26. From 9pm, a parade will make its way through the streets from Panteon de Quijano to Plaza del Carmen, where the sardines will be burned by the Dimonis (demons). But to end on a family note, on Pinata Sunday, March 1, there will be a day of children’s games, contests and piñata for the children.
NEW technology has been installed on urban transport in Alicante to improve access for people with visual disabilities. The Navilens system - a type of app programme - was developed by the University of Alicante, and trialled on buses back in November with positive results. Through mobile devices, passengers can be informed of where the nearest bus stop is, as well as frequency of transport, destinations and arrival times. The application has been developed in 18 languages, which also improves accessibility for tourists or people from other countries. So far, around 230 bus stops have been fitted with Navilens codes. Mobility councillor, Manuel Villar, said: “In this way, all those people who due to their visual impairment have difficulty accessing public transport can benefit from this application.”

All spruced up LA NUCIA Animal Shelter is being given a muchneeded lick of paint thanks to the town council and a group of 10 volunteers from England, Belgium and the Netherlands. The team of helpers give up a week of their time to do social and charitable work, and this week have been putting the council’s donation of 40 litres of paint to good use.
Jessica Gommans, councillor for Animal Protection, visited the La Nucia Animal Shelter to deliver the paint to Engelien Stenbruggen, secretary of the Animal Protection Agency of La Nucia and meet the volunteers. She also got to see first hand the work carried out by the shelter which was set up in 2006 and receives an annual council grant of €40,000. Gommans said: “This

Protecting pets FIVE-HUNDRED leaflets containing vital information for pet owners to help prevent cases of animal poisoning have beem distributed by Alcoy Town Hall. Put together by the Department of Public Health, the publication also contains useful

Clear rules TRAFFIC and road use regulations in relation to personal mobility vehicles will be modified in Villajoyosa after the town hall unanimously agreed amendments must be made. Mayor Andreu Verdú said: “In view of the significant increase in personal mobility vehicles observed in the municipality, it is a necessity to determine where they can circulate and establish a clear regulation for their use.”

MABS was born 20 years ago when five ladies with breast cancer found there was no support during or after treatment - one of which is the current president Jacqui Phillips MBE. She was recognised for her services to charity in the 2005 New Year Honours List, collecting her award from HRH Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Place in April of that year. Initially set up for breast cancer, the ladies quickly realised that there was a need and demand to assist people with ALL types of cancer and are often referred patients by doctors and hospitals MABS Cancer Support is available to anyone who needs help as a result of cancer, whether diagnosed themselves or affected by a spouse or partner having cancer. But how can MABS help? Well they can provide a driver to take you for treatment, which can be daily for a six-week duration. They can loan mobility and medical equipment such as wheelchairs, hospital beds, ripple mat-
tresses, walking frames and hoists to name a few. Provide assistance at home to help with ironing, washing, shopping or a qualified nurse if and when necessary. They also have two hospice/palliative rooms - paying over €40,000 a year retention to keep them available for MABS patients if and when necessary, counsellors, a therapist and information leaflets on all types of cancer. These services are provided FREE of charge for those unable to pay - although a donation is always gratefully appreciated. How can MABS do this - purely thanks to the continued support of volunteers and donations at the charity shops they have up and down the coast and generous business sponsors. Were it not for the army of volunteers, who give up a few hours a week to work at one of the MABS shops on the Costa Blanca or those kind enough to donate items to sell in them, it would not be possible! In 2017 MABS became a ‘Fundacion’ which recognises that they have become a highly important cancer support organisation here in Spain, with a registered office in Javea. Cancer, in all its

Help was at hand PASSERS-BY rushed to help a 58-year-old who collapsed while out for an afternoon walk with his dog in Moraira. “He fell to the ground near the port, hitting his head,” said Brigitte, a local resident, who witnessed the incident. “There was a pool of blood and he had a seizure,” she added. People who were there went to the unconscious man’s aid and Frank de la Cuerda, who runs the Yacht Master sailing school in Moraira, brought a defibrillator. Although he did not use it, he was able to use his first aid knowledge to help the injured man, Brigitte said. Paramedic volunteers from Proteccion Civil and Local Police officers were soon on the scene who transferred the him to Denia hospital. Everyone reacted ‘so professionally, so caringly’ that she wanted to share the story, Brigitte told the local Spanish media afterwards. She also revealed that she had rung Denia hospital to enquire after the injured man and was assured that he was still under observation, but stable.

The Tutty project OVERCOMING prejudices and sexist stereotypes is the objective of a new educational project in Denia. The Departments of Equality and Diversity and
Education have joined forces to set up the Tutty initiative to promote respect for emotional and family diversity among schoolchildren. The project is being launched for the first time in public schools La Xara and Jesus Pobre, though an invitation to join the scheme has been extended to the three subsidised centres in Denia. Councillor for Equality and Diversity, Javier Scotto, said the project revolves around a card game, the Tutty, designed for two, three or four players aged eight or above. The aim is to form a family of six or more characters, using the 28 cards available. There are, therefore, an infinite number of possible combinations and each player designs his or her own. Once a Tutty family has been formed, the child presents it and explains it to his or her classmates, ‘thus contributing to give normality to all situations.’ Scotto added: “Tutty is more than just a card game. It is an educational project that promotes respect for emotional, sexu-

Gibraltar won’t negotiate with EU THERE seems to be some confusion between Gibraltar and the UK after Chief Minister Fabian Picardo gave an interview in which it appeared that he was looking for Gibraltar to join Schengen following Brexit. There was a response from a UK government spokesman (according to the BBC) saying that this was not possible and that any arrangement would have to be part of the UK-EU talks on future relations with the European Union. Since then, Mr Picardo has explained that he wasn’t looking for FORMER Secretary of State for International Trade under Theresa May and a staunch Brexiteer has taken the opportunity to give public advice to Boris Johnson with regards to trade deals with the USA. He considers that it is more than likely that there will be a considerable delay in setting in place a deal with the American federal government due to the British decision to support the EU ban on

Of the current 28 States in the EU, just six, including the UK are not part of Schengen which is an agreement which allows free movement between Schengen members without the need to show passports or obtain visas (except in times of emergency). As Gibraltar employs so many Spaniards and expatriates who live in Spain, any delay at the border could be harmful not only to the economy of Gibraltar (which also sees large numbers of tourists entering across the land border) but also to the local Spanish towns such as La Linea de la Concepcion, Alcaidesa and San Roque who rely on workers’ income. It would appear that Northern Ireland will receive special treatment as far as cross border movement with its neighbour the Republic and Gibraltar is anxious to see as little disruption with movement into Spain as possible.

Exciting new chapter with EWN JANUARY 2020 - A new year and a new start for Euro Weekly News reporter Tara Rippin as she takes on a new challenge on the Costa Blanca. I am about to embark on a new chapter with Euro Weekly News after relocating from our head office in Fuengirola on the Costa Del Sol, and I could not be more excited! Having spent a wonderful 18 months working with a dedicated, hard-working and loyal team, it was time to move back to the Costa Blanca where I lived previously for 10 years, and take on a new challenge. Though it was incredibly hard to leave my colleagues, it was more of an ‘hasta luego’ rather than a goodbye, as I am fortunate enough to be able to remain part of the EWN family, working from another of our four offices. And having spent many years on the Costa Blanca, I have a good understanding of the area. I'm really excited about the prospect of living and working in Albir, it’s a beautiful place with a thriving community. To tell you a bit about myself, I have been a journalist for more than 25 years, starting my career with a local newspaper called The Melton Times, before moving on to the Loughborough Echo, and then back to The Melton Times as news editor. Similar to EWN, these publications were heavily involved in their communities, and provided a valuable voice for their readers. This is the wonderful advantage of writing for regional newspapers, and something I want to develop here on Costa Blanca. I first arrived in Spain a decade ago, initially on holiday as my parents had a home here. But like most expats, I fell in love with the people, the climate and the scenery, and made arrangements to stay permanently. Having dabbled in journalism here for a few months, I took a career change, but the love of writing eventually won over, and I applied for the position of writer with EWN. This meant a five-hour relocation, but it was worth it to be a part of such a great team at the head office, eventually being promoted to editor. Looking to the future now, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to make this my patch and truly become a part of the community, both professionally and personally. A united stance
A COMMUNITY mountaineering club in Villa de Agost has joined forces with its local council to stage a fundraising 5km race in support of the Ana Bella Foundation, which helps women survivors of domestic violence. The solidarity event on March 8, is the brainchild of Els Caragols Club, with a number of local sponsors, and the whole community is invited to take part. Ana Bella Estévez is a Spanish activist against gender violence. After suffering ill-treatment at the hands of her husband, she created the ‘Ana Bella Foundation for Help to abused women and separated mothers’ in 2006, a non-profit
organisation that offers help and support to victims of gender-based violence. The 47-year-old was married for 18 years and for 11 of those, suffered psychological and physical abuse before fleeing with her four children. She now shares her experiences on television and radio and in 2012, created the Ana Bella School for the Empowerment of Women. The race kicks off at 10am in the Plaza de España, and there is a registration fee of €10 which includes a t-shirt, provisions and insurance. Prizes and trophies will also be presented. Forest fire THE Valencian Community closed 2019 with the lowest number of forest fires recorded for 33 years, and less than 1,000 hectares devasted by flames. Of the 969.38 forest hectares razed by fire in the Community last year, more than 86 per cent (841.08 hectares) relate to the Beneixama (Alicante) fire which broke out on July 15. While 2019 saw less individual fires, in terms of area destroyed, it lies is the fourth position with the least burned land since 1986-2019, behind the 898.20 hectares of 1997, the 765.10 of 1996 and 730.35 of 2008. According to data released by Generalitat Valenciana, 34.3 per cent of the area scorched was wooded land and the remaining 65.7 per cent classed as
‘flat land.’ Director general of Fire Prevention, Diego Marín, said: “The only number to really celebrate would be that 100 per cent of the causes of forest fires were started by ‘natural causes,’ that is, lightning. In any case, it is necessary to thank and highlight the work done by all prevention, surveillance and protection teams.” The figures for 2019 are a far cry from the 138,404.50 hectares registered in 1994, the year of the devastating fire of Millares.

ALMOST 7,000 job hunters in Alicante applied for positions with Spain’s postal service Correos, on Sunday during the company’s largest recruitment drive in a decade. A total of 4,005 posts are available across the country, with 166,000 applicants nationally taking part in regional interviews and relevant tests. Welcoming the ‘new offer of public employment,’ a CCOO spokesperson, said it was ‘the result of negotiation and mobilisation.’ It follows the recruitment of almost 8,000 staff in three years. The Multiannual Employment Plan 2018-2020, promoted and agreed by CCOO, outlined Correos’ need to create 11,200 new places in the wake of the loss of 15,000 jobs since 2010. The union is now calling

tion of the mortgage deed, etc. Businesses It will be more complicated for those who took a mortgage loan for a professional or commercial purpose, as they will not be considered by the courts as having consumer status. What documentation is needed to claim? To claim on your behalf you must provide us with a copy of the signed notary mortgage loan deed and the invoices for the expenses paid by you e.g. for the notary, land registry, agency in charge of the registration of the deed, and in general all the expenses that you have paid. How much can I claim? According to the latest decision of the Spanish Supreme Court (with which we disagree with and we hope the Court of Justice of the European Union (ECJ) will rule against it), you can at the moment request the refund including back interest of; Notary Expenses, the Supreme Court basically says that they must be shared between the two parties since they were both involved in signing the deed, so you can reclaim 50 per cent of what you paid.
Management Expenses, that is to say the expenses that the bank agency charged for processing and registering the mortgage deed in the land registry, which the Supreme Court contends benefits both parties, so in principle you should have paid just 50 per cent, you can claim back the balance of 50 per cent of what you paid. Property Registration Expenses, the Supreme Court says that this cost must be paid by the bank, since it is the bank that wishes to register the mortgage against the property as collateral for the loan given; therefore the full amount paid by you for this may be claimed. As for other costs, such as taxes (Stamp Duty), etc. it is worth including them in the claim, since the doctrine adopted by the Supreme Court could be modified by the ECJ. If you paid all the expenses of your mortgage loan, we advise you to claim, with no legal cost and no risk, contact us and we will help you. CHILDREN currently learning in prefab classrooms in Sant Joan d’Alacant will be cheering at the news €4.8 million is to be invested in their school. A new building will replace the existing Lo Romero School, and will include primary classrooms, a library, gymnasium, music room and dining hall. SEWAGE TRAGEDY TWO plumbers have died while repairing a sewage collector in Castalla. The men, aged 38 and 59, reportedly became trapped in the septic tank, owned by the public authority, while trying to fix a valve which cuts off the passage of water and had burst for unknown reasons. According to the Emergency Information and Coordination Centre (CICU) and the Provincial Fire
Consortium of Alicante, the victims were ‘unconscious as a result of the toxic gases they inhaled and died shortly after.’ A third employee is believed to have tried to help his colleagues, but lost consciousness before he could attempt to save their lives on Tuesday, January 14. The Guardia Civil has opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Lifeless body
AN investigation has been launched into the death of a former consul of Slovakia in Kazakhstan, who was found dead at a property on an urbanisation between La Nucia and Altea. The lifeless body of the 53-year-old was reportedly discovered close to the steps of his house by a gardener who called emergency services at around 5pm on Tuesday, January 14. According to reports, the ex-official had sustained a blow to the head, and his body was found in a pool of blood. On arrival paramedics could do nothing to revive the deceased and the Guardia Civil is investigating the circumstances, having ruled nothing out.
56 homes evacuated
SIX people suffered smoke inhalation and 56 homes were evacuated after a fire at a house in Cabo de las Huertas in Alicante. The blaze at the property on Bulevar Costa urbanisation, forced emergency services to vacate four blocks of apartments.
A dozen firefighters from Alicante City Council rescued as many people trapped in their homes on Tuesday, January 15, with six needing treatment on site for ‘dense smoke’ inhalation. The source of the fire is reported to have been in the circuit breaker box.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL surveys are being carried out in the run up to the ambitious relocation of the historic fortress, Torre Placia in Alicante, to prevent the destruction of nearby homes. The 10-day survey to discover if there are any other structures attached to the fortress which may have a detrimental effect on other properties is expected to be complet-
ed on Sunday, January 26, before the dismantling of the defensive construction begins. The building, currently located in Calle Campoamor, will then be moved to a new location 500 metres away between Calle Conrado Albaladejo and Juana FrancĂŠs, at San Juan Beach, as part of a â‚Ź1.4 million project. The change of location
was decided after a ruling by the Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community (TSJCV) in September 2004, which annulled a building licence granted to a housing cooperative in the area. It would have led to the demolition of houses, and it was instead agreed to move the tower, which dates back to the 16th century.

Donating blood in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics.
In Spain, Blood Components and Services are provided by 17 Regional Blood Transfusion Services. Despite their autonomous operations management, every regional service is fully incorporated into a unique and common Public National Health System, supplying a cohesive blood transfusion care to all citizens, residents, and visitors in Spain based on 100 per cent voluntary and non-remunerated blood donation. For more general information, visit www.msps.es. Anyone who has lived continuously in the UK between 1980 and 1996 (a minimum of one year) will not be able to donate blood in Spain due to the risk of transmitting mad cow disease. Similarly, there are restrictions if you have received a blood transfer in the UK. However, each region may have different rules about donation. Call the donation helpline on 935 573 500. Alternatively, visit www.donorsang.gencat.cat to find out if you are eligible. If you are eligible, you can give blood at your local hospital, or via the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja) at one of their clinics, or in one of their mobile units. You can check dates and locations by visiting www.donarsangre.org. A donor card is not necessary to give blood. On the first visit you will have to provide DNI, NIE, passport or a driving licence. If you are already registered in the Blood Bank, you only need a donor card or a document with your name and surname. The process of blood donation takes just 10 minutes in which 450 ml are collected (equating to 10 per cent of the total blood circulation of an adult person). Despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain blood is through the generosity of the public. The blood is carefully screened for disease to make sure it is safe. After a tattoo, you must wait four months to be eligible to donate. After surgery, the exclusion period will depend on the type of intervention. After minor surgical procedures, you cannot donate blood for seven days or until you are fully recovered. After undergoing major surgery, you will not be able to donate blood for four months. The rarest blood type is AB, present in 1 per cent of Caucasians, according to research by the America Red Cross. Blood transfusions are carried out daily in Spanish hospitals with more than 6,200 patients being given them, of whom almost a quarter are fighting cancer and a similar figure receiving transfusions during or after surgery. Some journeys were impossible with roads either flooded or unpassable because of heavy snowfalls in the Jijona, Alcoy and Vinalopo areas, with Villena temporarily isolated. In response, the regional government mobilised 39 snowploughs and prepared to treat mountain roads with 499 tons of salt and 105,000 litres of brine. Instead of reopening as planned last Monday, airports authority AENA announced that fire-damaged Alicante Airport, closed on Sunday owing to heavy rain, would remain inoperative throughout the day, affecting 190 flights. At one point 20,000 Alicante Province homes were without electricity as trees brought down powerlines. Villajoyosa hospital had to suspend operations for some hours and parts of the hospital were without heating after a pylon was blown down in Jijona, but even after the supply was gradually restored, some outpatients were sent home. Although accustomed to extreme weather and despite all their preparations, the authorities were often powerless to counter the worst that Storm Gloria could bring. The Marina Alta was badly hit and Javea sea front was under water from Duanes to the Arenal with devastating effects on promenades, business premises and homes. The River Gorgos broke its banks in Jalon and Gata as well as Javea, where residents were evacuated from nearby homes and campsites. Residents also had to be evacuated in Denia where parts of the town and port area were flooded. Frontline villas on the always-vulnerable Les Deveses beach suffered significant damage and the sea invaded the mouth of the River Molinell between Denia and Oliva. In Calpe residents were warned to avoid the sea front and the promenades where shops and restaurants had been wrecked by the pounding sea. Neighbouring Benissa’s stretch of coastline was badly affected and boats at the Les Bassetes yacht club were literally lifted by the wind as far as the car park. Moraira, less exposed to the mountainous seas, still suffered considerable damage to its promenade, seafront zones and street furniture as well as fallen trees. Towns on the other side of Mascarat in the Marina Baja did not escape Storm Gloria’s attentions although devastation was not on the same scale. Seawater entered some Altea garages on the seafront and the level

of the River Algar rose dramatically owing to the torrential rain and released water from the Guadalest reservoir upstream. Alfaz’s Technical Services department, Proteccion Civil and police had been working since dawn, but by mid-morning the town and Albir seafront had returned to normal. Work consisted mainly of shifting fallen trees and removing debris and driftwood from Albir’s seafront, the town hall said. Benidorm Town Hall reported 33 incidents, but none were serious although several cars were damaged by fallen trees. Schools functioned normally and although streams and watercourses were swollen, the
town’s storm drain system ‘responded perfectly’ to the heavy rain, with only minor flooding that was solved without problems, the town hall said. Apart from the power cut at the hospital, Villajoyosa was also let off comparatively lightly by Storm Gloria with fallen trees, power cuts, damaged street signs and placards and slight flooding in some streets. In Gandia, just inside the Valencia boundary, the storm also claimed a life, that of a homeless Romanian woman who habitually slept in a local park and died of hypothermia, municipal sources said.

The network and the radio equipment that officers will now be using have cost €100,000, although the firm contracted to supply and install the system will maintain it free of charge for the next five years, Benidorm mayor, Toni Perez, revealed. “The radios incorporate GPS, so officers and patrols are locatable at all times and can be dispatched immediately to deal with any incident that arises,” he said. Transmissions are now clearer with better voice quality than with the old analogue system, while communications will remain entirely private. “All of this will enable us to reduce response times and increase efficiency.”
Call to follow Baleares lead THE Ciudadanos party on Benidorm Council wants a crackdown on ‘booze tourism.’ The town hall should follow the lead set by Baleares’ regional government and ban shop sales of alcohol between 9.30pm and 8am as well as two-for-one Happy Hours, pub crawls and free drinks offers which have made Magaluf notorious. The Baleares’ move met with mixed reactions from Benidorm politicians, some of whom insisted, ‘Benidorm is not Magaluf.’ Others, like the Ciudadanos councillors, want to know why similar regulations which were drafted two years ago are still gathering dust. Juan Balastegui, Ciudadanos spokesman, commented that his party had raised the matter a month ago.
Benidorm would soon be full of stag dos and hen parties with a repetition of the usual problems, he pointed out. “The Baleares move is interesting. “If it could be done here, perhaps the regional government ought to consider supporting it,” Balastegui said. “That would solve a problem that isn’t restricted to Benidorm but is repeated in other municipalities, too.”

Albir - Alfaz NEWS Anti-bullying talk from former victim Three-hundred pupils packed the gym at Alfaz’s L’Arabi high school for a talk on bullying. THE talk, organised by the Lions Club, the L’Arabi school and the town hall, was given by social educator Marina Marroqui, a specialist in gender violence who has survived abuse herself. She has given talks and organised workshops for 65,000 adolescents and young people throughout Spain, with the purpose of providing them with the means of detecting the earliest signs of bullying and gender violence. Marina Marroqui’s inner strength is immediately visible, declared Alfaz’s Social Welfare councillor Marisa Cortes. “Nobody knows more about gender violence than she does, as from the time she was 15 until she reached 19 she suffered abuse, beatings and ill-treatment,” Cortes revealed. “But the most important aspect of her experiences was to move on and set to work to help the

Dancing mood MORE than 400 dancers attended the 11th Dance Schools Meeting in Alfaz del Pi. Sports councillor Oscar Perez visited the event at the Hotel Kaktus Albir which was organised by the Club Costa Blanca Balla with collaboration from Alfaz Town Hall. Lovers of dance converged on Alfaz where 20 professionals gave 14 free workshops on all dance styles for the public. Perez congratulated the organiser Carolina Marcet for the success of the event and at the same time encouraged dancers from other towns and cities who were spending the weekend in Alfaz to sample the town’s wide tourist and leisure options. A 2021 meeting is already on the books for next year, announced the organisers and, as happens with each successive year, with an increased number of participants.

Albir - Alfaz NEWS ALFAZ began resurfacing the road adjoining the football pitch in Albir. Asphalting the 150-metre section of road will cost an estimated €60,000 and should be finished within two weeks, Urban Development councillor Toni Such said. Visiting the site recently with Technical Services councillor Oscar Perez, Such explained that this will improve the connection between Avenida San Pere in front of the health centre and Calle San Miguel. “It’s fair to say that the countdown to building a bridge over the Soler stream in Calle San Miguel has begun,” Such said. “This will eventually relieve congestion at the entrance to Albir, which in turn will improve traffic

Comp to depict equality ALFAZ’S Equality department launched the first edition of its young people’s Art Competition. They are invited to design announcements for the different events for next March’s Alfaz’s Women’s Week, coinciding with International Women’s Day on March 8. The Equality, Youth and Education departments, who are collaborating on the initiative, want the municipality’s younger residents to express their concepts of female empowerment, equality, co-existence and respect between the sexes. Announcing the competition, Equality councillor Rocio Guijarro, accompanied by Youth councillor Laura Sevilla, explained that the competition was open to all under-18’s registered on the Alfaz Padron. Participants may base their entries on artwork or photography but can submit only one piece of work. Back in time THE town halls of Alfaz, Altea and Polop have created a programme of culturalenvironmental routes suitable for all ages. It begins with a free conducted tour scheduled for this Sunday, January 26 up to the Faro de l’Albir. This fully-automated lighthouse still guides shipping, but is also one of the most visited places in the regional government’s Network of Natural Areas. It opened to the public in 2011 and is now an informal museum, recreating the lives and work of former lighthouse keepers. New block casts a shadow PLANS to replace a 1970’s apartment building on La Fossa beach with a 20storey tower block continue to meet opposition. CALPE Town Hall has put out to tender the concession for Blue Zone parking and operating the municipal towtruck. There will be 2,136 paid parking spaces split into three zones. There will be Zona Azul parking from Monday to Saturday yearround, excluding holidays, as well as a Zona Verde (Green Zone) in force each morning from Monday to Friday, again excluding national holidays. There will be Zona Naranja (Orange Zone) parking between July 1 and August 31 in areas adjoining the beaches, together with another Mixed Orange Zone in the Old Town between May 1 and October 31 from 6pm until 9pm. More streets will be affected than before, explained the town hall which hopes this will produce faster rotation with more vehicles parking for shorter periods. Path needed first of all TEULADA-MORAIRA Town Hall put out to tender the contract to build a €181,350 path to the Cap D’Or archaeological site. An adequate path is urgently needed, municipal sources explained, as the Generalitat-financed project not only includes excavations, but the subsequent publication of three papers. These will detail the entire Cap D’Or archaeological site, restoring the Cap D’Or watchtower, Moorish water deposit and Iberian settlement as well as improvements to the path leading to the Cova de la Cendra cave and a study of the cave itself, which was inhabited 8,000 years ago.

Javea NEWS In a manner of speaking Javea resident Raul Diego began legal proceedings against two Guardia Civil officers for ‘linguistic discrimination.’ THEY stopped him in late December during a drugsand-drink traffic control in Tavernes de Valldigna near Gandia (Valencia). He and three others were heading to the Festivern music festival in Tavernes and Diego, who was driving, addressed the officers in Valenciano. Asked to speak Spanish,
he explained that he was legally entitled to use Valenciano, but was allegedly told that unless he continued in Spanish, he would be taken to the Guardia Civil headquarters where he would have wait for an interpreter. Diego is supported by the Plataforma por la Llengua, which promotes and
protects Valenciano throughout the region. Manuel Carceller, a spokesman for the Plataforma, complained that the Guardia Civil officers considered Diego was obstructing them in their duties by using the local language. “This was an example of ideologic prejudice and in-
appropriate for members of a State security force,” Carceller said. The Pro Guardia Civil association later issued a statement stating that the officers had behaved correctly. On the contrary, the communique maintained, the driver Raul Diego, had tried to oblige the officers to speak Valenciano.

EU has trade surplus A REPORT compiled by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW Kiel) and the ifo Institute Munich has concluded that the European Union has a trade surplus with itself of €307 billion rather than the zero it should be. They contend that simple calcula tion errors could not possibly account for such a huge amount which grows annually, but is likely to be the result of massive tax fraud which affects every member state. According to their estimates, such practices could have cost the EU
By John Smith member states’ treasuries some €30 billion in 2018 alone and it is easy for companies to perform the sleight of hand which results in the tax evasion. “When companies declare sales as exports, they are exempt from VAT. However, if, in reality, these transac tions were not crossborder but do mestic, they are not recorded in the supposed trading partner’s import statistics and go untaxed,” explained those responsible for undertaking the study. Last year, the entire world ran a
trade surplus with itself of €357 bil lion, so this new analysis suggests that 86 per cent of the global devia tion is solely due to the EU and points a finger at the UK due in part to the way in which it prepares its trade data using small random sam ples only. Britain however battled for many years with the Carousel Fraud prob lem which saw goods imported from the EU without paying VAT and then companies selling those goods and charging VAT , finally closing down prior to paying the UK Customs and absconding with the money.
AFTER an initial test, Spain’s largest energy company Iberdrola has signed an agreement with the Avia service station network to in stall fast charging points for elec tric cars in 100 of Avia’s sites. Initially, they were tested in just seven provinces, but now it is ex pected that they will roll out into the majority of Spanish provinces and there will be a total of 500 fast chargers in the 100 service sta tions to ensure customer satisfac tion. Long term, Iberdrola aims to have 25,000 recharging points across the nation.

Our community is considering a vote to limit shortterm holiday rentals, but how can we ob tain the votes of ‘threefifths of the members’ when fewer than half that number ever attend the AGM? The announcement of the AGM should specify ‘first calling’ and then ‘second calling’ usu ally half an hour later. If 51 per cent of members and proxies are not present, the AGM cannot be held on first calling. At the second calling, valid decisions can be voted by the members and proxies present. So a threefifths vote of those present will suffice to pass resolutions. The members who did not attend can protest the vote within 30 days after being informed. Note that the law also spec ifies that this majority must include the ‘cuotas’ or partici pation shares as well as the number of owners.

The developers would be able to recover their costs over a period of years (with a reasonable profit mar gin) and once this has been done, the properties would then be handed over to the State as assets to man age.

So boring...
I REALLY could not have agreed more with actor Lawrence Fox, when he stated on last week’s Question Time that this whole racism question is becoming decidedly boring. I also loved his description of racist accusers being a bunch of ‘sanctimonious, humorless, preachy victimhood-peddling mediocrities that fill our public spaces.’ Brilliant, and so true. These people that find racism under every stone are the biggest racists of all. The United Kingdom is not America. Back in the 50’s and 60’s, when I was a lad, we had not even heard the word racism. When groups like the wonderful Platters, The Drifters, and performers with the talents of Johnny Mathis and Nat King Cole came along, we truly never saw colour. All we saw were great artists. The problems began to arise in the UK when the early black immigrants shied away from integration and began to create their own ‘tribal’ neighbourhoods, thereby setting themselves apart and consequently remaining an unknown and somewhat suspicious entity among the indigenous population. However, over the years with better education and with later
generations becoming more integrated, the British populace has tried its utmost to accept all as equal, and even introduced strict laws of the land to make sure that racial discrimination is in no way tolerated in the country. But that simply wasn’t good enough was it. The wingers, who either out of pure hatred or simply looking for excuses, still endeavour to put the blame for a whole multitude of their misfortunes on racism. Because many of their accusations are completely unfounded or frivolous, it’s made people angry, actually creating racism where it never before existed. This latest episode concerning the Duchess of Sussex is a typical example. The British people welcomed this young lady with open arms. Disregarding the despicable trolls, the fact that she was of mixed race was not an issue. Even the evangelistic wedding service, which was utterly unfamiliar and unorthodox to most of the British public, was accepted and celebrated as a part of their new royal family member’s heritage. Even when it became apparent that her main circle of friends - Oprah, Serena Williams, and the Obamas were all black, and she
was at loggerheads with her white father, the British public still never harped on about what could easily have be interpreted as her own racist leanings. But when it all started to go wrong, instead of blaming the fact this selfish and ambitious young lady’s dream of being a princess was not quite the ‘leading role’ she had in mind, the ‘usual suspects’ all began screaming that she was being forced to make her decisions because of racism! One accuser actually stated on TV that because she was depicted as the instigator of the Sussex decision to withdraw from the Royal family, it was inferring that all black women were aggressive and manipulating and therefore the insinuations were racist! No, I’m afraid those who stir up racism at every opportunity are themselves the true problem. The sooner we lay the blame where it truly belongs, the better. An Oasis of comfort
Established in 1980, the Albir Oasis Park is the original mobile home park on the Costa Blanca. BARRY DUKE THE fella in the woo shop stared intensely at me, then declared ‘you’ve attracted a mischievous spirit.’ Given the extent of my deep scepticism regarding all things supernatural I simply shrugged and said there has to be a logical explanation for the odd things that have been happening in our apartment lately When I first visited Decor Etnia, it was to buy a silver bracelet encrusted with my favourite stone, turquoise. I bought it to match a ring and a belt buckle (I do like shiny things.) The owner, Bartolomé, admired the ring, and agreed the bracelet complemented it perfectly. I saw Bartolomé again when I went into his store to price a lamp I fancied. He told me the cost, then asked why I wasn’t wearing my ring. Dejectedly I told him I’d lost it somewhere in the apartment, and despite searching everywhere it was nowhere to be found. That’s when he gave me the ‘mischievous spirit’ baloney,

WEIRD GOINGS-ON: Missing rings and broken keys. but assured me would turn up within three days if I allowed him to perform a ritual that involved me holding a copper Tibetan singing bowl in my left palm. When one runs a mallet around the bowl it gives off an unearthly sound, and I stood there, feeling exceedingly foolish, and the word ‘poppycock’ kept going
through my mind as he did his Harry Potter thing. On the night of the third day the ring turned up - in a bag of peas in my freezer! I stood transfixed, wondering how the hell it had gotten into a packet I’d not touched in months. There was no logical explanation, but my deeply ingrained
scepticism would never allow me to entertain the idea this was the work of ‘a mischievous spirit.’ Then came the inexplicable incident with a steam iron. On discovering it in the kitchen sink I demanded an explanation from my husband Marcus. The reply I got was ‘oh, the bloody thing leaks, so I just dumped it there.’ I replied
‘OK, I’ll toss it in the dumpster when I go out shopping.’ After checking that it had indeed sprung a leak, I disposed of it. Imagine my shock when I returned to find the iron back in the sink. When Marcus returned I told him what had happened. He looked at it and said ‘yep, that’s the faulty one. You must have dumped the one that works.’ That’s when I went into full-on Inspector Clouseau mode. ‘Let’z get ziz straight. You put ze faulty iron in ze zink, then used ze spare one. What next?’ Marcus replied ‘I put it back in the utility room before I went out.’ We checked but there was no iron there. All we had was the leaky one. Things got even weirder when I took the pooches out for a walk, but couldn’t get back into the apartment because I only had half the front door key. The day before it was perfectly intact. Clearly it had snapped in half indoors, but how? And where’s the missing bit? I’m now half-expecting a disembodied voice to chuckle and say ‘calm down dear, I’m only playing with you.’ If I do I’m calling an exorcist.

It’ s ok I have enough friends MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I DON’T like Facebook, but do use it just because I have to so I can follow a couple of groups that are to do with my Orthostatic Tremor. It’s the only way I can speak to the few hundred people that also have the disorder. I post a few videos because I’m trying an experiment and it’s going OK. Anyway, because I answer a few folk’s questions, I also have accepted a few friend requests. They’re from people I have known for a few years and maybe lost touch with. But what’s also happened is I’ve started to get requests from people that I don’t really know. They live all over the world, but most are from the USA and Australia and we have spoken online about our disability. I accepted a few but after a few weeks I realised I had made a terrible mistake because of the stuff they post. I don’t need people to presume I am interested in how great they think Donald Trump is. I also don’t have to be told
that Jesus will save me on a regular basis. (Don’t be offended - I would say the same about any other religion’s gov’ners as well). So what do I do now? Easy I unfriend them and decide to go with my original quote I put on FB which said, ‘Please do not ask to be my friend. I have enough friends. In fact I have friends I haven’t even used yet! But should a vacancy occur I will let you know.’ Anyone ‘phoned Vodafone ES customer service lately? Service is fine but the music they play whilst you are on hold is absolutely crazy. It is the loudest rock music I’ve ever heard. I told the operator and they laughed and said ‘I know, everyone says that.’ If everyone agrees, change it! If you have a Vodafone account ring them and tell me what you think. The same goes for shops and restaurants. I find the music in shops is chosen by the staff and most of them are youngsters so, of course, it’s going to be thumping dance music. Restaurants are a little more difficult because a lot of people go for the food and entertainment. The problem is when you go for dinner with a couple of friends and the background music is so loud you can’t hold a conversation. Anyway, just sort it out please.

DEAR Euro Weekly, It is such a shame for the royal couple, Harry and Meghan. Am I the only person that feels sorry for them? I think what they are doing is very admirable, surely they should be allowed to chose how to live their life or how much time they put into ‘royal’ duties. Maybe Harry knows something we don’t. There seem to be many questions left unanswered about the family. What really happened to Diana? What on earth is going on with Andrew? I mean is Prince Charles even Harry’s real Dad? I am sure it is James Hewitt. Poor Meghan, fairytales tell us that it’s every little girl’s dream to marry a handsome prince and she has done this and now faces all this backlash. Surely she can reappear in the cast of Suits if she wants to make her own money and Harry can stay at home with baby Archie. Anyway, leave the young couple alone and give them some space. From what I have understood, albeit with my limited knowledge of Spanish politics, is that the left parties are in government. However, it seems the Spanish aren’t missing much with the other parties. VOX is a radical party that defends animal abuse and hunting. They also have no respect for other cultures and on top of everything they are misogynistic. I say thank gosh that they didn’t get the top spot. Although they are very prominent in town halls and provincial governments. Hopefully, people come to their senses and boot them out. I heard that before VOX, Spain was the only country in

DEAR Euro Weekly News, Is it sad to see another high profile person falling prey to the evil of social media or is it just their own stupid fault? Yes, I totally agree that the person blackmailing Malaga coach Victor Sánchez is a complete scumbag, but there is no reason to sack the man for having a bit of fun. He wasn’t hurting anybody apart from his own pride. Really the video is not that shocking and not anything that most people haven’t seen on TV or film. I am glad they managed to get to the source and arrest him. They should have a look at his phone and post some of his private photos online as part of his punishment. Be prepared WITH Storm Gloria already in full swing and having given the east of Spain such a powerful battering, more than 30 provinces in Spain were placed on high alert. As most of the sunny coast rarely have to suffer such extreme weather we have to ask that with such a specific infrastructure can they ever be prepared? Cataluña’s regional government went as far as banning outdoor activities in Girona and Barcelona, while Alicante Airport was forced to temporarily close, disrupting more than 200 flights. In southern Alicante, scenes of flooding and street debris reminded residents of the massive storm that hit them in September, when rivers burst their banks and caused widespread damage to property and crops. With the financial infrastructure of these coastal areas dependent on their beautiful beachfronts and import and export of seafood, the installation of storm surge barriers could provide protection from flooding during extreme weather events. By using a movable barrier it can still allow a flow of either maritime traffic or even natural movements of water to and fro. Many of the local governments already have beach regeneration projects to hinder erosion or regenerate the coastline. Future housing construction projects may need to take into consideration the ability to withstand stronger winds and the use of stronger or different materials. At any rate, Spanish cities will have to be built in a way that goes against what appears to be their nature, using the fullness of human ingenuity not to trample the earth and replace natural with the artificial, but to engineer both nature and the land in a way that emphasises their codependence.

Spanish weight worries AT present, 77 per cent of Spaniards have at least one meal away from home every day. Breakfast is the main culprit, as nine out of 10 people who eat it outside do so in a restaurant or bar.
The latest lifestyle survey conducted by the Spanish Society of Obesity, throws a light on the country’s eating habits. According to the study, people who eat breakfast away from home increase their risk of obesity by 18.8 per cent. People who suffer with obesity are those who eat out for breakfast the most and generally have dinner at home. People are also more prone to weight problems if they shun vegetables as a main course or a side dish and opt for a sweet dessert instead of fruit. Eating sweet for pudding increases the risk of obesity by 20 per cent. In this regard, it is surprising that 40 per cent of obese people explained that they don’t have fruit because it’s never on restaurant menus. Restaurateurs argue that people go to restaurants to treat themselves, stating this as the reason for not putting an apple or an orange on their menu. However, experts highlight that eating out has stopped being something occa-

against obesity. Offering free water and informing of
the calories in each dish are some of the steps that restaurants can take. Half portions are another measure that health experts hope restaurants will implement in the near future. Obesity is a disease that has doubled in Spain in the last 20 years. Doctors explain that this will be a big problem for public health services in the coming years. Social environments are very influential and, in fact, having a family member or friend with obesity increases the risk by 13 per cent. The study also determines that 54.6 per cent of people who are obese do not accept it and refuse to perceive it as a disease. Doctors explain that the misconception translates into one of the most common phrases: ‘I’m not obese, I’m fat.’ Health professionals insist that overweight people who don’t recognise this problem make the medical intervention a lot harder.

People like to say that the body loses heat through the head. In reality, heat can be lost through any part of the body that is exposed to cold, the head usually being one of them. And, although it may not seem like it, the head represents around 10 per cent of the body’s surface and weight. This is the reason why it is important to wear hats on very cold days, especially for people with little hair. Hands and feet can get cold very quickly as they are the most peripheral areas of the body. In low temperatures, our body prioritises pumping blood to the vital organs, leaving our extremities the last to receive warm blood. However, unless a person is exposed to extreme temperatures, this coldness does not negatively affect health or the immune system. A big number of people frequently question if the cold is slimming. In fact, the cold does actually cause the body to burn more calories. When the temperature drops, the body has to generate heat by burning the so called ‘brown fat.’ If we do not replenish that fat, it will result in weight loss.
Nonetheless, nature is wise and it reacts to the change by increasing the feeling of hunger in the cold winter months. Reality bites GOBBY Gogglebox star Scarlett Moffatt, 30, whisked her police constable boyfriend Scott Dobinson off for a break to Barcelona for their one-year anniversary this week and the couple looked very much in love in social media pictures she shared. Scarlett’s social media diary started when she shared a picture of herself wearing shades indoors and eating a Spanish tortilla in a café tagged on the famous promenade La Rambla. The caption read: ‘New Year’s Resolution: self love! be more spontaneous! travel more!! If you’re wanting to spontaneously travel more.’ She then shared more snaps on her stories including a snap taken at Gaudi’s Casa Batlló and a picture of her kissing Scotty at nearby Park Güell captioned ‘Barcelona, you beautiful place.’ The couple then went to a bar where they downed shots, before continuing to enjoy the traditional Spanish food by tucking into a giant plate of paella, padron peppers and patatas bravas, but choosing to skip dessert in favour of a

DENISE RICHARDS got away from it all and carried on with her day job as she attended the Glow and Darkness screening in Madrid last week The star made her first public appearance since it was claimed she stormed off the reality TV show Real Housewives of Beverly Hills after being confronted by castmates amid speculation that she had an affair with her co-star Brandi Glanville. Denise has been backed up by her co-star Camille Grammer, who hit back on Instagram. Commenting underneath a post about the Beverly Hills report, she quipped: ‘It’s not true. The moment is said to be caught on tape when the cast filmed scenes in Rome. Glow and Darkness is a period drama that has put Spanish TV institution, Jose Luis Moreno, back behind the camera. With a star-studded Englishlanguage cast, the series is set in the Middle Ages and revolves around the life of San Francisco de Asís. Writer and poet Alejandro Guillermo Roemmers created the series and co-wrote the first season with Moreno, whose Madrid-based company Dreamlight International Productions co-produces. Unfortunately for Denise, her trip was cut short as she rushed back to Malibu, California to mourn the death of her beloved pet Shih Tzu mix, Louie, who she rescued 10 years ago.

This is a twist on the more traditional Scotch eggs you see in other recipes, using black pudding instead of normal sausage creates a much sharper tang, which really combines well with the soft boiled egg inside, tastes good and looks visually creative when cut in half, great for a light lunch, starter or even afternoon brunch with a nice salad. There are a number of different theories about the origins and etymology of Scotch eggs, and no firm conclusion. But the word on the street is that Fortnum & Mason’s London department store claims to have invented Scotch eggs in 1738???

Morcilla Scotch eggs • Ingredients 5 eggs 250g Spanish black pudding sausage meat (remove skin) 150g pork sausage meat A bowl of panko bread crumbs A small handful of plain flour for dusting the eggs Black pepper Vegetable oil Salt • Method Bring a pan of water to the boil, add four of the eggs and simmer the eggs for seven minutes Drain the water from the pan and transfer the eggs to a bowl of cold water to stop them from cooking. In a bowl add black pudding meat, sausage meat and a pinch of salt, mix together with your hands. Empty the mix from the bowl onto a lightly floured chopping board and spread the black pudding
SCOTCH EGGS: With a sharper tang than usual. flat. Now peel the eggs gently, trying not to break any as it will affect the visual side at the end. Once peeled lightly flour each egg, which will stop them sticking to the sausage mix. Divide the sausage mix up into quarters and place one egg in the middle as shown in the photo and close the black pudding gently around the egg so its encased completely with no cracks. Empty a small handful of the breadcrumbs onto a small plate. Whisk one egg in a cup and brush generously over each of the Scotch
eggs, this will help the bread-crumbs stick and stop the black pudding from cracking in the pan. Gently roll each Scotch egg through the breadcrumbs, so each one is coated evenly. Now heat up a pan to shallow fry your Scotch eggs - you only need the oil to be a few centimetres or a couple of inches deep. When the oil is hot, carefully lower each Scotch egg into the oil and cook the four Scotch eggs for eight minutes or until they are golden brown. Remove and drain on a sheet of kitchen towel.

MOTORBIKE and moped sales revved up in Spain in 2019 to levels not seen for a decade, a trend industry experts say is partly due to a change in public thinking on the best ways to get around. Industry association ANESDOR said the sector registered sales of nearly 195,000 motorcyles and mopeds, more than 2,500 trikes and almost 5,000 light and heavy quads last year, 12 per cent up on 2018. “We touched bottom in 2013, when we hardly sold 100,000, and since then we have grown at a good pace,” commented ANESDOR Secretary General Jose Maria Riaño. “Increasingly more Spaniards get around on motorbikes and mopeds, and this has translated into very positive figures for the industry in 2019.” He attributed growth in the sector in part to the recovery of the Spanish economy in recent

ANESDOR said growing competition from vehicles like electric scooters and ordinary bicycles could make it difficult for the industry to reach pre-economic downturn totals once more.

There is also a revised engine line-up delivering improved performance and economy and helping the Micra take on rivals such as the Volkswagen Polo and Ford Fiesta. Priced from €16,566 (£14,100), the Micra comes as a five-door hatchback but with coupe look thanks to neatly disguised rear door handles. ‘ Nothing Like We Remember Him’ Formula One’s most successful driver has been described as ‘altered and deteriorated’ six years after his tragic skiing accident, in 2013. LEADING neurosurgeon Nicola Acciari has warned that Schumacher will be ‘very different’ to what fans around the world remember. The seven-time champion has not been seen in public since the devastating event. Following the brutal fall, the former Ferrari driver was in a long term coma, after suffering severe brain injuries - as his head collided with a rock whilst skiing off-piste in the French Alps. Acciari mentions that Schumacher will have ‘deteriorated organic, muscular and skeletal structure.’ The seven-time world champion has since been cared for at his Lake Geneva mansion by his wife Corinna and their two children Gina-Marie, 22, and Mick, 20. Liverpool came through a highoctane tussle with old rivals Manchester United to win 2-0 at Anfield and move 16 points clear at the top of the table on Sunday, sparking a chorus of ‘ w e a re g o i n g t o w i n t h e league’ from their now expectant fans.
