FLATMATE ATTACK A MAN has been arrested in Malaga City for allegedly attempting to sexually assault his flatmate on Christmas Eve. The alleged attack took place in the bathroom of a home in the northern part of the city. The victim and the alleged aggressor shared a rented house with the partner of the former. It was the victim’s boyfriend who stopped the attack when he heard her call for help. While giving help, the victim’s boyfriend suffered a superficial knife cut to his neck. Police called to the property arrested the alleged assailant, a 29year-old Moroccan man, for his alleged involvement in the crimes of sexual assault and battery.

ILLEGAL JOBS THE Social Security labour inspection has uncovered 2,059 illegal jobs in Malaga Province and has forced the infringing companies to regularise the position of the workers. DRUGS HAUL: Thousands of kilos of hashish were found. A GANG that allegedly planned to steal drugs from a rival criminal organisation and kill the man guarding the narcotics has been broken up. As part of the police operation 26 people alleged to be part of a ring that transported huge amounts of hashish from Malaga to Paris and Marseille in France have been arrested. In Operation Tenebro, the Guardia Civil and the French National Gendarmerie arrested the alleged leaders of the group in France, while those suspected of being in charge of logis-
tics, storage and distribution of the drugs were arrested in Malaga. They are all charged with the crimes of membership of a criminal organisation, drug trafficking, vehicle theft and false documentation. Of the 19 searches carried out in Paris, Marseilles, Nerja, Marbella and Estepona, 5,950 kilos of hashish, €750,000 in cash, five high-end vehicles one stolen in France and recovered in Spain - were seized, as well as numerous information and communication systems. An investigation started more than a year ago and was developed in several phases. In

the first phase, the Guardia Civil learned of the organisation’s intention to kill a person in charge of guarding the drugs of several drug trafficking organisations. The detainees, police say, wanted to steal the drugs and frame the person they allegedly planned to kill for the theft. A first police operation established in Nerja stopped four members of the organisation when they tried to escape in a
vehicle. In the search of a house, a fifth person was arrested and 2,100 kilograms of hashish and several French number plates were found. Following these initial arrests, a joint investigation was launched with the French National Gendarmerie. This exchange of information between the two police forces led to the seizure of 3,850 kilos of hashish on French soil and 22 more arrests.
Werewolf charges CRIMINAL proceedings may be brought in a case where 23 children suffered from ‘werewolf’ syndrome after they were mistakenly given the wrong medicine. Malaga’s Public prosecutor has told the city’s District Court that investigations show there is evidence of criminal responsibility in the case. The children suffered from hypertrichosis, a condition that causes hair to grow all over the body. Health authorities confirmed last September that 23 children were affected - 10 in Cantabria, 10 in Andalucia and three in the Community of Valencia. The prosecutor has now referred the proceedings to the court for the initiation of criminal proceedings and requests that two heads of the company Farma-Química Sur SL, based in Malaga, be heard as investigated people. The pharmaceutical company allegedly marketed a mislabelled product that included minoxidil instead of omeprazole. Minoxidil is usually used to treat alopecia.

NEWS EXTRA Sea danger MARITIME RESCUE services rescued eight migrants coming from Maghreb, including seven men and one woman, from a small lifeboat close to Almuñecar. Rescuers from Almeria were alerted after the boat was located 26 nautical miles south of the municipality in the early hours of the morning.
Big injury A MAN who was injured after colliding with a tree while paragliding over the mountainous area of Loma del Gato in Almuñecar, has been transferred to Santa Ana Hospital. Emergency services were alerted and, given the difficulty in accessing the site, an off-road ambulance attended the 45-year-old man.
New homes THE mayor of Velez-Malaga, Antonio Moreno Ferrer, highlighted that 2,070 building licences were processed in 2019 in the municipality. During the annual presentation of the Urban Planning Department, the mayor indicated that 776 licences were approved for new homes and 1,510 for minor works.
Clean slate RINCON DE LA VICTOR I A h a s a p p ro v e d t h e privatisation of cleaning services in the municipality. The proposal is based on a study that recommended the separation of the cleaning of public buildings from the rubbish collection service. The town hall approved private management for the service that is currently being carried out by the company EMMSA. Councillor Sergio Díaz explained that after the previous contract finalised, a study was carried out to analyse the service. The study concluded that the most suitable alternative was direct man-
agement through a contract with a private operator. According to the economicfinancial study, the direct management of the cleaning service by the town hall would involve an investment of more than €5 million in machinery and facilities. Diaz indicated that the sum would mean an increase in debt for the public entity and would limit other municipal investments. The mayor of Rincon, Francisco Salado, highlighted the priority of improving and updating the municipal cleaning service and offering quality services to residents. The administration announced they would immediately publish the contract for the service.

Tropics trade MALAGA Province ended the mango season with a harvest of 23,645 tons, 35 per cent less than in 2018. The biggest producers in the Axarquia region, concluded the year with a turnover only €5 million below the previous year and remain the biggest mango producers in Europe.
Tax drop NERJA Town Hall approved a reduction in traffic tax and in the property and real estate tax, IBI. Traffic tax will be reduced by 10 per cent over three years and a 50 and 75 per cent bonus will be given for hybrid and electric vehicles, respectively.
Drug raid NATIONAL POLICE arrested a 30-year-old Spanish man who was running a cannabis plantation in a house in Malaga City. Police seized 44 marihuana plants and 26 grams of cocaine in the raid and charged the man for drug trafficking and a crime against public health.

Local star MAYOR of Motril, Luisa María García Chamorro, has praised local singer Javi Mota for his career and love for his roots. She said “No one has ever given anything to Javi, everything he has has been achieved with great effort and determination.” At 15 years old, Mota left his home town to start a successful path after his performances became known throughout Motril. THREE KINGS DAY in Spain, or Dia de los Reyes, falls on January 6 each year - a day when most children in Spanish-speaking countries receive their Christmas presents. On the eve of January 5, youngsters leave their shoes by the door anticipating the Three Kings will leave gifts inside them overnight. Prior to this, children and their families excitedly await the kings’ arrival in their home villages or towns, on occasions via helicopter, where gifts are normally presented, before colourful processions during which thousands of sweets are thrown to children running alongside. Another essential part of the Three Kings Day in Spain in the roscon de reyes, or kings’ cake. The ring-shaped pastry is decorated to look like a crown a king would wear, and often topped with glazed fruits to represent jewels. Inside the cake is a toy - a figurine of baby Jesus or a tiny king - and the person who finds it in their piece is said to have good luck for the year.

Fresh hope for homeowners

Criminal allegations: leading politician in court ED: 1748 - JANUARY GREGORIO CAMPOS, the President of the Axarquia Commonwealth will appear in court this month to defend allegations he embezzled funds. The leading politician, who is also mayor of Iznate, is accused of fraudulently claiming more than €598 in ‘maintenance’ allowances between September and October 2015. Another politician, Gaspar Bokesa, General Controller of the Axarquia Commonwealth, is also under investigation for allegedly approving the expenses. Independent group, ‘Por Mi Pueblo,’ (for my town) brought the claims to court, ‘fulfilling its public inspection obligations,’ alle g in g G re g o rio Ca mpos , ‘c ommitte d crimes of embezzlement of public funds and of prevarication.’ Mr Campos denies the charges, saying the claims were made legitimately during the
period he was acting as president of the Axarquia Commonwealth but before he began to receive his €41,000 a year salary. He added the expenses were legal, and said he was, ‘absolutely calm,’ about the court case. He further alleged the claims have been, ‘known to the representative of Por Mi Pueblo for two years.’ Politicians from the opposing Partido Popular (PP) party are demanding answers, however, with the mayor of Torrox, Oscar Medina, calling on Campos to, ‘give explanations.’ Gregorio Campos was last month cleared by prosecutors in another investigation into whether he had correctly followed the law when offering public contracts. During the investigation, the politician said he had, ‘blind faith’ in the justice system.

ED: 1752 - FEBRUARY A C A M PA I G N g r o u p i n Axarquia confirmed it will continue to push Spanish authorities for a commitment not to penalise owners of homes unwittingly built on non-urban land. At the Save Our Homes Axarquia (SOHA) annual general meeting, the group called for a meeting with new representatives at the Junta de Andalucia, elected after December’s vote. The association’s presid e n t , P h i l S m a l l e y, s a i d : “We are at a transcendental moment in the history of Andalucia for the first
time since the introduction of democracy.” The president added: “A new planning law has been put into practice together with an amnesty for the 300,000 illegal properties in the autonomous region, and we look forward to seeing what’s going on. We will try to have for a meeting with the new councillor as soon as possible.” Mr Smalley explained SOHA would push to consolidate the 10-year amnesty it recently brought into place preventing Spanish authorities pursuing any owners of homes built illegally on non-urban land more than 10 years ago.
Ravine crash ED: 1758 - MARCH AN elderly Norwegian couple has reportedly been seriously injured after their car dropped 30 metres into a ravine in Torrox. According to Spanish media, firefighters were forced to help release the trapped pair from the vehicle before they were transferred to the Axarquia Regional Hospital. The incident is said to have taken place on the country road connecting Torrox and Competa, near the Pago Benamar. Police are investigating what caused the car to leave the road

Julen post-mortem ED: 1763 - APRIL THE results of a post-mortem on the body of two-year-old Julen showed the boy died shortly after his fall down a 71-metre well in January. According to Spanish media, the report also rejects the theory put forward by the owner of the land where Julen fell suggesting the toddler was killed by subsequent rescue attempts. The post-mortem reportedly shows Julen died of trauma to his spine and head ‘a few minutes’ after his fall. Experts also revealed the boy did not free fall down the borehole but was ‘slowed down’ by clothing and material from within the hole. The report explained Julen had only sustained two fractures because his fall was slowed and due to the bone elasticity associated with his age. Asked about land owner David Serrano’s theory res-

WITH Brexit possibly around the corner, if you have less than six months life left on your passport it would be a good idea to renew sooner rather than later. Quite often when different official forms are digitalised, it becomes more rather than less confusing and you need to have a degree in programming in order to proceed. For once however, the British government has made things much easier and far less complicated in applying for a replacement passport if yours has been lost or is about to expire. No longer do you need to supply lots of forms including birth certificates and to have a photograph physically signed on the back by someone who knows you and it really is now quite easy if you have access to a computer. Very simply visit https://www.gov. uk/overseas-passports and you’re taken through the whole process step by step and the only drawback is that there isn’t a single page detailing everything including costs as you have to go through a page at a time. There is however a passports link which does give quite a lot of information on the website, but not everything. Even if you have lost or had your passport stolen, you are not precluded for applying online for a replacement, but you have to declare it lost in advance also online. As a real bonus you can now use digital photograph and there are quite explicit rules about what is acceptable as you navigate the website and whilst it may take a couple of attempts, provided you remove any glasses and stand in front of a white background, a selfie taken with a
phone will probably work ok. If you are not happy using a phone camera, then most towns have at least one print shop where they can photograph you and give you a digital image on a memory stick or card. As you progress through the procedure you will be best served by having access to details of your previous passport, but it isn’t actually essential and the site does report back to a human in the UK who can check. When you post your photograph, you will be asked to give details (including email address) of a person of standing who can confirm that they know you and that the photograph is of you. The whole process can take up to six weeks from start to finish and this will include delivery via courier to your address in Spain and you have to pay with a debit or credit card for the cost of the passport (depends upon number of pages) and courier fee at the time of submitting the application online. You will be sent a special code which will allow you to track your passport through all of its stages. In the event that you have lost your passport and need a temporary replacement, that can also be done online. It is more expensive than a normal passport, is usually good for one round trip only and will normally be issued by the British Consulate in Malaga. For those without computers, it is still possible to apply through the post and there are even different shops with English-speaking staff scattered around Spain where for a fee they will help you complete the forms and send them off for you.

VOLUNTEERS: A united Axarquia community will staff the new Red Cross centre.
ED: 1770 - JUNE A NEW Red Cross centre jointly staffed by British and Irish expat volunteers and members of the Spanish community has officially opened in Velez-Malaga. During the unveiling ceremony, president of the local region, Eduardo Recio, pointed out that the new facilities are modern, accessible, well situated and functional.
He said “this will enable the Red Cross to provide a service to people in the region who are in need and that we can attend to them in facilities fit for the 21st century.” He finished by thanking all the volunteers who give up their time to deliver the service in the locality. Recio added that “in terms of the English-speaking foreign residents, the new office, in Calle Aceitunero, will enable us to offer work-
shops and activities in the heart of Axarquia that were previously not possible, and these will begin in October.” In addition, a new initiative is about to be launched to provide help to people who are in need or socially isolated. This will include providing lifts to medical appointments, offering support to people in hospital or whose partner is in hospital. More details are expected be announced. Replacing a lost or expired British passport from Spain
TEAM WORK: Guardia Civil and Local Police patrols have praised local citizens for their help in arrests.
Citizen collaboration ED: 1777 - JULY STATISTICS revealed by the Local Police of the Night Operating Group (GON) show that three arrests were made during the first half of the month of July thanks to the help of citizen information. Three individuals were detained on various charges and all have several warrants for arrests placed upon them. The first was made after a suspected armed robber was recognised in a bar in the town of Rincon de la Victoria by an off duty officer
and his friend. After an 092 call several officers were soon on the scene and made the arrest. The second was a similar scenario after a criminal with existing warrants was recognised and detained. The third was made by a report by a citizen for individuals acting as illegal ‘valet parkers.’ A patrol was sent to the place in question and after no documentation was offered, arrests were made. The Guardia Civil has praised the cooperation of the public in helping make these three important arrests.

ED: 1781 - AUGUST A PRIEST who was the target of racist abuse has been selected for transfer to another parish by the Bishopric of Malaga despite his plea to stay. Father Jesús Ramesh Babu Gudapati has been the victim of racist threats since he joined the parish 10 months ago. The main perpetrators of the abuse were a group of youths that would congregate at a kiosk near the church entrance. The closure of the kiosk and the arrest of the ring leader have curbed the insults, however the Bishopric of Malaga have

DANA DETAILS ED: 1788 - OCTOBER MORE details are emerging in the case of the alleged murder of Romanian Dana Leonte. According to a police report released to Spanish media, the decision to jail the boyfriend of Dana Leonte, Sergio Ruiz, was made by the judge due to the ‘gravity of the facts’ and fears he would use his freedom on release to destroy further evidence of his guilt. Prosecutors have concluded from evidence presented during the investigation that Sergio allegedly ‘hit the woman at least once with a wooden weapon on the head,’ after which he concealed her and dragged her down the stairs to put her
in a vehicle and moved her to another place ‘to hide her’ or ‘to kill her and hide her.’ Evidence to corroborate the story was obtained through police measures such as telephone tapping, geo location devices, testifying and collection of samples from various locations. It was also pointed out that Sergio falsified text messages supposedly from Dana, and upon investigation of the man’s property there was a strong smell of cleaning products. News of the emerging facts come as the town of Arenas announced three days of official mourning for the death of Arenas resident Dana. A minute’s silence was also held at 9am on Thursday, October 3, outside the town hall.
NERJA’S NATURAL The Cueva de Nerja welcomes an international press meeting that concludes the 60th anniversary of its discovery. Among the participants are professionals from the New York Times, the Diario de Noticias, from Portugal, and the association of IberoAmerican press correspondents, among others.
ED: 1795 - NOVEMBER THE meeting allows journalists from all corners of the world to witness the caves firsthand, including its environment and the scientific work that is done from its Conservation Institute. Around 20 professionals will be able to check the biological, geological and archaeological values of the cave as well as its present and future potential. From there, they are invited to share with readers
and audiences all about the grotto. The Caves of Nerja are one of Spain’s major tourist attractions and are a series of caverns that stretch for almost five kilometres. Concerts are regularly held in one of the chambers, which forms a natural amphitheatre. The caves were rediscovered in 1959 by five friends, who entered through a narrow sinkhole known as ‘La Mina.’ This forms one of the two natural entrances to the cave system. A third entrance was created in 1960 to allow easy access for
tourists, just south of the Sierras of Tejeda and Alhama National Park. The cave is divided into two main parts known as Nerja I and Nerja II. In February 2012 it was announced that possibly Neanderthal cave paintings dated in 42,000 years had been discovered there. The event will close the 60th anniversary of the discovery of the cave, which has been celebrated with tributes to the discoverers, the publication of a commemorative book, parades and the traditional International Festival of Music and Dance.

MOVE over Boxing Day, Black Friday is now collecting more money in the UK. Traditionally, crowds flock to the Boxing Day sales but there has been a much worse turn out than expected with one research compa ny suggesting that spending will be down just under 10 per cent com pared to last year. It didn’t help that the weather was bad and some high street shops started their online sales on Christ mas Eve so shoppers could stay at home and still get the bargains.

THE success of the Deliveroo operation in the UK has seen it being wooed by heavy hitters such as Amazon and Uber who both wish to take it over. It has grown very quickly since it was founded in London in 2013 and now has operations in many European and Asian countries including Spain. Now it wants to sell part of its shareholding to Amazon which has been looking to get back into the rapidly expanding fast food delivery business but the British Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) isn’t so

Basically, Amazon has two options, one to buy into a company such as De liveroo or alternatively set up its own competing business (which it did in 2016 but soon pulled out) and the CMA fears that such an investment in the company could be bad for customers, grocers and restaurants as there would be reduced competition. The CMA’s executive director, An drea Gomes da Silva, said: “Millions of people in the UK use online food plat
forms for takeaways, and more than ever are making use of similar services for the sameday delivery of groceries and we are worried about lessening of competition.” That then is the problem and unless and until the two companies are able to persuade the CMA that its fears are groundless, approval will not be given for the investment. Any purchase in the UK is likely to in clude other markets such as Spain where Deliveroo operates in many large towns and cities.
The Calma Card AS an experiment, the Deutsche Bank and MasterCard are launching what they say is the first bank card in Spain to use motion code technology. The Calma Deutsche Bank Card will allow the security code (shown by the CVC label on the reverse) to change auto matically every four hours in or der to increase security as it doesn’t allow thieves to clone or benefit by data theft on on line transactions This card also offers insur ance cover for theft or robbery to cover the value of any stolen purchases.

to continue to trade during the coming year. In addition, some of the debts will also be transferred but taxes will continue to be paid in each of the countries in which Dia operates.

THE currency market was charac terised by its unpredictability in 2019, with heightened geopoliti cal tensions infusing significant volatility into the major curren cies. And it looks like we may be in for more of the same in 2020 as many of the key 2019 currency trends look set to continue to dominate market sentiment over the next 12 months. ECB and Germany could weak en the euro EUR/GBP in 2019: High £0.93, Low £0.82 EUR/USD in 2019: High $1.15, Low $1.08 The European Central Bank is al so likely to demand attention this year as it wrestles with an increas ingly fragile outlook in the Euro zone, not to mention Germany’s recent economic woes, which have

CURRENCY TRENDS: 2020 could shape up to be even more volatile. the country teetering on the edge of a recession. A wideranging review of the ECB’s strategy will begin in Janu ary, with Christine Lagarde (who took the helm at the ECB back in November) already signalling a willingness to deviate from the policy path forged by her prede cessors. If further easing is unleashed to
support the currency bloc, or if Germany does indeed slip into a recession, the euro could tumble. Brexit to keep pound pressured GBP/EUR in 2019: High €1.20, Low €1.06 GBP/USD in 2019: High $1.35, Low $1.20 For GBP investors, Brexit will re main the pressing issue. While Boris Johnson’s election victory
may have allowed him to success fully pass his EU Withdrawal deal, this marks the end of only the first stage of negotiations. In 2020 Johnson will embark on phase two of the talks, which will see the UK attempt to hash out the terms of a trade deal and its future relationship with the EU be fore the end of its transition peri od in December. With Johnson reluctant to pur sue any more delays, there is a clear risk of the process resulting in a nodeal Brexit at the end of the year, the threat of which is likely to limit any upside in the pound. Trade and Trump to drive US dollar USD/GBP in 2019: High £0.83, Low £0.74 USD/EUR in 2019: High €0.91, Low €0.86 Across the pond we will see US politics return to the fore this year, with impeachment proceedings against Donald Trump and the
2020 Presidential election both likely to drive volatility in the US dollar. We won’t know who will be the 2020 Democratic candidate for a few more months, but the poten tial for Trump to be challenged by a Democrat who is viewed as eco nomically disruptive, such as Bernie Sanders, could prove USD negative this year. As EUR/USD is the world’s most traded currency pairing, any US dollar losses could support the eu ro. Also in the spotlight for USD in vestors will be the ongoing trials and tribulations of the USChina trade talks. With a preliminary phase one deal now apparently agreed by both sides, the focus will turn to whether a more comprehensive deal can be reached in 2020. With so many key events on the calendar, 2020 could shape up to be even more volatile than 2019.

And so that was Christmas
LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT SURROUNDED by family and friends, hopefully many of you will have once more enjoyed this special and much loved occasion. I’m pretty sure most of you will have also observed the ritu als and timehonoured Christmas Day traditions that we have been famil iarised with over the generations. In the beginning we are the babies, crawling around the base of the tree with the young mums of the family lightly admonishing us as we endeav our to pull baubles and shiny bits of tinsel from the lower branches. Over the next few years we morph into the youngsters, excitedly tearing off the paper from presents, brought by a Santa we are becoming slightly more skeptical about, but still pre pared to give the benefit of the doubt just as long as we receive at least a proportion of the presents we asked him for! The next stage in our Christmas generation game sees us become one of the young and midaged adults who, having finally got the youngsters off to bed, are pouring copious mea
MOST LOVED POSITION: Grandparents enjoy a privileged position at Christmas. sures of alcohol and consuming about a million calories in Quality Street and mince pies, while relating what we consider hilarious tales of past Christ mas turkey disasters. All being played out against a back drop of East Enders, Coronation Street, the Queen’s mes sage and yet another rerun of Dr Zhivago on the box.
Generations later, if we last long enough, we find ourselves in the twi light of our years, quietly enjoying the utterly spoiled and most loved exulted position you can attain. You become Grandpa/Grandma. And that’s where this ol’ boy has finally found himself. Grandpa (or in my situation Great Grandpa) is expected to do just about
nothing. He is not required to wash up, clear up, lift up furniture or top up the drinks. He occupies the most comfortable chair in the room (gener ally in the corner). Periodically he is asked by various family members if he ‘wants anything.’ He is allowed to doze off without being labelled a party pooper and is
subsequently not particularly worried that his chair is a little out of the way just as long as he is close enough to occasionally interject the conversation with an ‘I remember when’ recollec tion of his own. These narratives are usually delivered to reassure the room (and himself) that he hasn’t actually ruined the whole Christmas celebra tions by selfishly deciding to slip away and meet his maker thereby actually becoming an ‘I remember when’ sub ject for a whole host of future family Christmas gatherings! It’s been a blast to be with my amazing family in Dublin this year. Thanks for making yer ol’ Dad proud and happy once again. I’d also like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy and Peace ful New Year. DAVID WORBOYS I HAVE often wondered whether the pedestrians of Nerja are unique in Andalucia in their ap proach to zebra crossings. I drive regularly in and around the town and, as a motorist, every time I see a zebra (not the animal!) ap proaching, I need to decelerate almost to a crawl and try to guess the intentions of any pedestrian within 10 metres of the crossing. This requires considerable con centration. Approaching the town from El Capistrano village, there is a cross ing controlled by traffic lights and marked as a zebra. Many visitors and tourists from abroad don’t notice the red light against pedes trians and, assuming that a zebra gives them priority, proceed to cross against the oncoming traffic. Why, then, is the crossing marked as a zebra and not distinguishable from the real thing? In the town there are dozens of zebras, of which nine are in the 400metre stretch from the bridge

ON GUARD: Zebra crossings require considerable concentration. to Plaza Cantarero. This street, C/ San Miguel, is flanked by narrow pavements teeming with pedestri ans, some of whom spill on to the road. At each zebra there is a po tential hazard; these come in many forms. First are those who are striding along the pavement towards a ze bra with no indication whatsoever
of their intention. As they reach the crossing, at the last moment they wheel round to the left and continue across the zebra without looking for traffic. Many of these are focused on their mobile phones. Some of them are joggers or even cyclists. They seem to as sume complete immunity. Perfectly fitlooking pedestri
ans, having been given their prior ity, will deliberately proceed at a snail’s pace, taking full advantage of their fleeting taste of power. They rarely make eye contact ex cept, in some cases, to emphasise their rights with a look of defiance and, yes, sometimes to acknowl edge their thanks. Others wait on the pavement, staring at me in
disbelief that I have followed the law and that they are now free to cross without being run over. Another popular trick is to dash out from behind a building close to the zebra and run across with no hesitation and not a glance at the traffic. Others step suddenly out into the road within three me tres of a zebra, but not actually on it. I find it particularly frustrating and quite common when a pedestrian stands at the edge of a zebra, chatting on her mobile or staring into space, forcing me to stop when she has no wish to cross the road. Sometimes there is a group of people, right at the edge, simply chatting, with no idea that I might assume that they want to cross. Frequently, as I edge forward, they all step out in front of my ve hicle on to the zebra. In France it is the pedestrian in mortal peril when using a zebra, which many motorists regard as an unnecessary obstacle in their way. In Nerja it is the motorist who has to be on guard.
SUPPORTING AND PROMOTING TRADITIONAL AND ARTISAN BUSINESSES IN ANDALUCIA CONSULAR MATTERS I HAVE been watching the tele vision series ‘The Crown’ a lot recently, and it started me thinking about how many busi nesses and events I am invited to as a lawyer with the firm Just Law Spanish Solicitors and as the Danish Consul for Andalucia and Extremadura. It is always very interesting to visit businesses in my capacity as trade delegate, and explore new possibilities of how to help Spanish businesses establish re lations with foreign businesses, and in particular Danish compa nies. firsthand pâté production and then an open an art exhibition, two very diverse organisations, but nevertheless informative. Following this, last week I was invited to a beer tasting event at the San Miguel brewery in Mala ga, you might have seen this brewery when landing at Malaga airport; and I am also very well informed on just how popular San Miguel beer is in the United Kingdom! I have to say that San Miguel have surpassed themselves in their visitor experience. They have a dedicated tasting room with a beer Sommelier. The tasting room is lit with an overhead digital projector which displays images appropriate to each one of the beers that are being tried, including ambient music relevant to the beer in question. But it does not end there, the projector also lights
up the tables. The Sommelier explained the complex process involved in cre ating each beer and described the taste and how it is brought to blend and perform in the most exquisite way in all our senses. A first for me was that each beer was served in a special glass with a particular tapa de signed to bring out the best taste in the beer. And to finish the visit, we went on to the inhouse bar. At this point, readers will be proud to know that this brave taster then actually managed to get herself home in one piece! Merrymaking aside, I certainly believe it so important that busi nesses in Malaga are continually supported as much as possible; and here’s to hoping that the San Miguel brewery continues to do what it does best in Malaga.

NO SAFE HAVEN DEAR Euro Weekly and readers, Happy New Year! I read this paper every week to keep myself uptodate and it se ems that we have seen a lot of violence in 2019 in Spain. It’s truly a shame as I consi dered the Mediterranean coast somewhat of a safe haven. It seems this could soon be no more. I truly don’t understand what we are coming to but would like to leave a message here. I know a lot of good people who help and really contribute to society in a positive way. If you are one of these peo ple, please keep doing what you do. You may not feel like it, but the world apprecia tes you and your work. Unrealistic choices A S 2 0 2 0 b e g i n s , p e o p l e e m b a r k o n t h e i r Ne w Year’s resolutions. The moment has finally arrived to face the objectives that keep being put off till January 1. But research proves that the outlook is bleak. About half of all adults make a New Year’s resolution. However, less than 25 per cent of people stay committed to their goals for longer than 30 days and only 8 per cent of people accomplish them. The most common resolutions come in the form of lifestyle changes like losing weight and saving money. The main reason that people don’t achieve their objectives is because they are generally unrealistic. Expectations about the speed and ease of completing resolutions also contributes to people falling victim to the false hope syndrome, leaving them disappointed. Ancient Babylonians are considered to be the first civilization to make New Year’s resolutions, around 4,000 years ago. Celebrations were held in mid-March, when the year began with the planting of the crops. During a religious festival known as Akitu, Babylonians promised to pay their debts and return borrowed objects. If they didn’t keep their word, they would fall out of favour with the gods. Despite these religious roots, resolutions today are focused on self-improvement. And although the rate of accomplishment is dismal, it doesn’t stop the tradition from continuing. After all, we’ve had thousands of years of practice.

81-year-old Grandmother dies on hard shoulder of UK motorway after being driven by ambulance 600 miles looking for bed: I am back in the UK now and even getting in to see a doctor is crazy. I had to wait seven weeks recently, al beit not an urgent need. But having said that, my brother died in Spain in June because the ambulance refused to take him until I ran back to the apartment to get his health card. Planes put a big group of people in close prox imity, creating a breeding ground for bacterium and viruses. However, getting a flight doesn’t mean an assured bout of illness. There are certain tips that can help reduce the chances of catching other trav ellers’ ailments. Viruses spread on planes be cause of the low humidity and air conditioning. Sitting by a window reduces contact with people in the aisle. Passengers should also adjust their air conditioning in the vents above the seat to blow germs away.
It may seem pointless, but wiping down the seat before sitting down can also minimise the chances of illness. Disinfec tant wet wipes or spray will do the job quickly and effectively and cleaning should be focused on the tray, armrests and seat belt. Plenty of water to keep hy drated will also contribute to keeping in top shape. Finally, the golden rule that everyone should try to follow is to not sit near the toilets, as they are the busiest part of the cabin with the biggest germ concentration. Dr Craig Ranson from the English Institute of Sport, spoke about these measures which apply both to travelling athletes as well as the general public. He indicated that the illness prevention campaign has proved effective so far,

We tend to think that when we sleep, our body and mind shut down. Every day, our brain takes in an astonishing amount of information, but rather than being directly recorded, it needs to be processed and stored. vited me to join them. Yet many singletons were not as lucky as I. Yes, I am blessed. I know this. So, for Christmas 2020 I am going to change my ways a little, and start looking at something I could perhaps do on Christ mas Day 2020 that might help others in some way. BARRY DUKE EVER hear of Kansai Yamamoto? No? Well neither had I until I spotted a frightful garment languishing on a charity shop rail. It was so grotesque that I thought it had been created by someone who’d been licking too many psychedelic toads. Apart from the raised bands of fabric along its sleeves and shoulders that made it look it like the carapace of a Stegosaurus, the shiny black blouson had attached to the front a large metal plate that bore the letter K, which I as sumed had now’t to do with Kellogg’s. Nevertheless, I slipped it on. One glance in a mirror told me that, were I to wear it in public, the Fashion Police would be on my case immediately and have me hauled off for psychiatric eval uation. I replaced it and walked out. Then some sixth sense drew me back, and, on examining the label closely, saw the name Kansai Yamamoto. I asked an as sistant if the name meant anything to her. ‘Motorcycle, innit?,’ she wise cracked, snapping her chewing gum loudly. I asked her to set it aside for me while I did some research. ‘Sure,’ she

replied. ‘Thing’s been hanging there for months, and we only keep it for a laugh.’ An hour later, all excited and out of breath, I charged back into the store, threw £5.00 across the counter and rushed back home to
put the thing on eBay. Yamamoto, I discovered, was a Japanese designer who launched a company in 1971 that specialised in wacky designs. It quickly became renowned for its many avantgarde col lections and among his clients was
David Bowie (the picture on this page shows the Tokyo Pop bodysuit he creat ed for the singer). Within an hour bids for this ghastly garment reached £300. In the end there was a bidding war between two bou tiques: one in New York and the other
in Paris. The French store won the jack et for a tad over £350.00! I returned immediately to the shop in the fervent hope of finding other Ya mamoto creations, but to no avail. What I DID find was a stunning, brand new pair of genuine snakeskin boots in my size, made by an Italian company called Jo Ghost. They were perfect in every respect bar one. They were a repulsive bright green! But I coughed up £15 for the boots, which normally retailed around £350, dyed them black and am still wearing them today, roughly 15 years since I first acquired them. What brought back memories of my forays into charity shops was the discov ery this week that someone has created a Facebook page for people who find bargains in ‘chazza’ shops. It’s called ‘Charity Shop Not So Sh*t Finds’ but nothing on it came anywhere close to the Yamamoto blouson, the Jo Ghost boots or a 1950s black sheep skin flying jacket I found for a tenner in Age Concern. I was offered 200 quid for that jacket but refused to part with it, and brought it with me to Spain. But sadly, in almost 10 years on the Costa Blanca, I've not encountered a single day cold enough to wear it.

As for the interior, Audi has fitted a pair of leather sports seats, a flatbot tomed steering wheel and buyers get the choice of two design packages to add some colour. Two new dri ving modes, called RS1 and RS2, allow the drivers to create two configurable modes that can be accessed at the touch of a button. There are also unique RS displays for the Virtual Cock pit and infotainment screens, and new Audi Sport puddle lamps.
