ALMERIA has loudly c o n d e m n e d g e n d e rbased violence. People across the province came out on Monday to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and to add their voices to calls to take action. Local authorities organised marches, workshops and events aimed at raising awareness about the issue and sending out the message to gender violence victims they are not alone and there are ways out of abusive relationships. Cuevas and Adra councils were just two of the many which commemorated the day with the reading out of a manifesto against violence against women. To further get the message across in Cuevas municipal benches featured awarenessraising messages like ‘Live in equality, live without violence.’ In Adra the cry was ‘Not a minute more silence!’

It is one of the latest Gothic cathedrals in Spain and Europe, erected in the 16th century when Renaissance architecture was spread throughout most of Europe. of Segovia were declared a World Heritage Site in 1985. The aqueduct is considered the most important Roman civil engineering work in Spain and is one of the most significant and wellpreserved monuments of Ancient Rome in the Iberian Peninsula. The Alcazar of Segovia, a royal palace documented for the first t i m e i n 11 2 2 , w a s o n e o f t h e
favourite residences of the Kings of Castile, built in the transition from Romanesque to Gothic, and which highlights the Mudejar decoration of its large halls. Devastated by a fire in 1862, it was subsequently rebuilt. It currently houses the General Military Archive of Segovia and the m u s e u m o f t h e R o y a l A r t i l l e r y College.

GUARDIA CIVIL have arrested two men suspected of breaking into several properties in Antas. The Guardia said the detention of the 53-year-old JRSC and 19-year-old JRST followed an investigation involving surveillance operations and controls to gain valuable information which was launched in response to a series of robberies. The Guardia also highlighted the role of technology which allowed them to identify the two suspects, adding that both were already known to the authorities and have lengthy criminal records for very serious crimes, including sexual aggression, illegal arms ownership and homicide. In the latter phases of the investigation it became clear the pair were focusing on properties in isolated locations to minimise the chances of being surprised, meaning they were having to widen the radius in which they operated. Also that they were carrying out the break-ins during the daytime.
A SUPECTED shooter is behind bars for taking potshots at passers-by from his Almeria City home. Police said 25-year-old PPA is accused of using a compressed air shotgun with a telescopic lens to fire at three people, causing serious injuries. One man was hit by a pellet while walking in Plaza del Quemadero, which lodged between his rib arch and his spine and had to be surgically removed. Two days later the shooter fired at two other people in the same place. He hit a woman in the arm and back and a man in the shoulder. They both ran to a nearby games hall to take shelter. Police tracked the trajectory of the shots to pinpoint the origin. Witness statements confirmed investigators’ conclusions and led to a search of the 25-year-old’s property, the seizure of the gun and the suspected sniper’s detention.

AN excellent year for visitor numbers in Almeria City according to the city council continued in October with a 25 per cent rise in the number of people dropping into the central Plaza Vieja tourist office. The provincial capital administration reported that nearly 6,000 people paid a visit to the tourist office over the month, 1,429 more than in the same month of 2018. Of the October 2019 visitors, 1,928 were foreigners. A further 3,216 people were from other provinces in Spain. “The Municipal Tourist Office is a clear indicator of how tourism is going in Almeria, and the increase in visitor numbers is an example of us increasing the number of travellers, which benefits hotels, bars, restaurants and businesses,” maintained City Promotion councillor Carlos Sanchez. “We are working on being an attrac-

Illegal worker scam POLICE made 12 arrests after finding an agricultural business based in Nijar was employing illegal workers with false identities, in most cases provided by the company. Operation Satelite, the result of a collaboration between the police and the Almeria Work and Social Security Provincial Inspection, led to the inspection of the company premises where nine workers were detained for identify theft and for be-
ing in the country without work and residency permits. An analysis of the information, along with documentation taken from the illegal workers, revealed they had been using the identities of people who did have the permits and were registered with Social Security, but were not at the time employed; all of them were carrying photocopies of other’s IDs. In some cases the detainees looked quite similar
to the individuals whose IDs they were using, but in others there were age differences of more than 20 years, police reported. The investigation also resulted in the arrest of the business owner and two company employees who were responsible for recruiting the Sub-Saharan workers and providing them with the copies of legal workers’ IDs. They also instructed the illegal workers on how to respond if questioned.
Bag snatcher under arrest A MAN suspected of mugging at least five elderly women in Roquetas de Mar is under arrest. Guardia Civil detained the 38-year-old after investigating a significant increase in the number of reported violent bag snatchings in the area over two days earlier this month. In each case the target was a woman of advanced age, walking down the street when she was surprised by an aggressor. Information gathered from the victims and from witnesses confirmed the robber would fix on a target and approach them with an intimidating and aggressive attitude, even going as far as to threaten to kill them if they did not cooperate. He then yanked the woman’s bag away from her, in one case causing the victim to fall on the ground.
TARGETS: The robber picked on elderly ladies, the Guardia Civil reported. All the women gave the same description of the mugger, including the clothes he was wearing. A witness identified the suspect going into a semi-constructed building in Roquetas, which is where the Guardia Civil arrested him.

Entertaining time for Dames THE Dames of Huercal-Overa were treated to some fine old entertainment at the members’ November meeting. Los Compañeros put on an extremely funny farce entitled ‘The Audition,’ which had members in stitches. The short play was a performance of works by Jocelyn Biggs, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. This was followed by a quiz and raffle, so it really was a fun-filled morning for all. For any ladies interested in joining the group, the Dames in Huercal-Overa meet on the third Wednesday of every month. Old Mojacar dig in the spotlight at Granada university THE University of Granada is staging an exhibition of photographs showcasing the work carried out during archaeological digs at the site of the original Mojacar settlement. The exhibition at the faculty of Philosophy and Writing features 125 images of ‘Mojacar la Vieja’ captured by local photographer Emilio Aramburu during two seasons of excavations at the location. Faculty deacon Jose Antonio Perez Tapias and the excavations director Dr Jose Maria Civantos inaugurated the exhibition, which runs until January 15 in the faculty refectory, used daily by 7,000 students and 300 professors. fortress, together with volunteers from Mojacar and the surrounding area. Emilio’s stunning photographs vividly capture the human aspect of their work, which at times requires considerable physical strength combined with meticulous care and caution. In all Emilio built up a collection
of close to 2,000 images, whittling them down to those he believes best portray his particular vision of the dig campaigns. Mojacar Council said it was delighted about the exhibition which promotes the Mojacar la Vieja site and the value of the municipality’s heritage.

Rundown Vera district set for improvements A RUNDOWN district of Vera is sent to undergo a series of improvements thanks to a nearly €300,000 investment in the area. Presenting details of the 80 Viviendas project, Vera mayor Jose Carmelo Jorge Blanco explained it was one of the most disadvantaged parts of the municipality and said this would be the first major investment in the area of eight buildings since they were built by the Junta de Andalucia in 1979 as housing for low-income families. According to the council the 80 Viviendas neighbourhood is
today in a state of abandonment and deterioration, which requires urgent intervention and improvements to infrastructure. Public Works and Town Planning councillor Belen Carnicer said the local authority’s “intention is that anyone living in Vera is a first-class citizen, whatever neighbourhood or area they live in.” The works will focus on cleaning up and disinfesting all the roads in the district and repairing and replacing paving, which is currently riddled with cracks and potholes. In addition, a passageway will be opened up for local res-
idents on a cul-de-sac. Further actions will include repairing walls and railings in a poor state of repair, and cleaning, repair and improvement works on the drainage systems. Also planned is the installation of street lighting. In the communal zone, cork flooring will be installed in the children’s play area, the sports ground surface replaced and facilities for playing basketball and football added. “Our aim is that the families can enjoy their district and have a park, parking areas, lighting and basic infrastructure which they did not have before.”
Fishy hash operation THE leaders of a family clan accused of smuggling hashish into the province on fishing boats are behind bars. Almeria Guardia Civil, working in collaboration with the Organised Crime Unit based in Alicante, busted one of the most active criminal organisations of its kind. The authorities launched Operation Carbotage in February to investigate the illegal transport of drugs from Morocco in small fishing boats to fishing ports on the Almeria coast. Drugs were stored in a safe place for subsequent distribution to third countries and, to a lesser extent, elsewhere in Spain. The Guardia said the detainees were highly experienced operators, complicat-
ing investigations into their activities. However, the participation of the specialised Guardia Civil units using the latest technology meant the investigation came to a successful conclusion. In the final phase of the operation at the end of October, the Guardia raided four properties and made 13 arrests, six of them members of the same family. They also found more than 3,000 kilos of hashish, 300 grammes of cocaine, marihuana, MDMA, materials used for preparing drugs for sale, €55,000 in cash and arms. A number of fishing boats were seized during the operation, including one off the coast of Murcia which led to the arrest of three individuals and the apprehension of 1,000 kilos of hashish.

THE mayor of Adra has officially opened the El Parque Europa in the La Curva neighbourhood following €117,000 worth of updates and improvements. Manuel Cortes talked about the “impressive” transformation of the 3,600sqm area, which he stressed was for all municipal residents to make use of “to practise open-air sport, rest or simply have fun.” The mayor said the park works were part of the council’s drive to encourage local people of all ages to do physical activity and enjoy outdoor spaces. The El Parque Europa is one of five public spaces in the municipality being given a facelift thanks to the Adra Town 2020 Plan and an investment of €545,000, which is 80 per cent financed by the European Regional Development Fund and 20 per cent by the local council.
Emergency service move THE Huercal-Overa Emergency Services are set to integrate with the Emergencies 112-Andalucia System with the aim of guaranteeing rapid response times and efficiency. The council approved the collaboration agreement with the Junta de Andalucia’s Presidency, Public Administration and Interior regional minister at a plenary meeting with the unanimous backing of all political groups. The local authority said the
move meant compliance with European regulations and would opitmise response times and the service provided in Huercal-Overa in emergency situations. Mayor Francisca Lourdes Fernandez explained the integration of municipal service with 112 was particularly important for the Local Police, who will, she said, “be able to obtain information in real time about incidents which occur in our municipality area and which
require their intervention.” Fernandez said Local Police will receive information at “practically the same time as 112 receive the call from residents.” The council clarified a single 112 emergency call number would be established, which it said will be of “great use, not only in situations of daily emergencies, but also in possible abnormal situations which will require the coordination of different emergency services.”

SAVE OVERA CASTLE PLANS are afoot to t r y a n d re n o v a t e Overa Castle as a key part of HuercalOvera’s local history. The municipality last week hosted the first ‘Salvemos el Castillo de Overa’ (Save Overa Castle) gathering of experts to look at how to make the project a reality. Organised by the Overa Viva platform, the meeting at the municipal cinema included members of the local council, historians and archaeologists, among them medieval Almeria specialist and Vera museum director Domingo Ortiz and Lorca museum director Andres Martinez. In her address to the event participants HuercalOvera mayor Francisca Lourdes Fernandez told them “it is a privilege that experts from the municipality and beyond have come here today so that with a multi-disciplinary focus we can find out about part of our heritage and establish the necessary bases enabling the different administrations to work together

possible visit by the Catholic Monarchs on their journey to the Real in Vera to receive the keys to the towns of the Lower Almanzora in 1482. Overa Castle is more than 800 years old. It was built to keep a watch on and control what was the major Lower Almanzora crossroads, with tracks connecting the coast and the inland mountain mines and the road which united Andalucia with the eastern Mediterranean. It was also an important refuge for the local population, and became a frontier post between the Arab and Christian worlds in the second half of the medieval age.

BREXIT EXTRA Border vets THE Irish Veterinary Association is opposed to the concept of the Irish government taking full time vets away from their practices and placing them on the border with Ulster if there is a hard Brexit. They prefer to use temporary staff.
French view FREN CH trade minister Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne has said that once Brexit takes place, then the EU and UK could reach an agreement on a future trade relationship provided that Britain sticks closely to Europe’s labour and environmental laws.

POLICE have located yet another illegal marihuana plantation in Almeria. This time investigations resulted in the discovery of 423 marihuana plants growing at a rural property in the Alquian district, resulting in one arrest for a crime against public health and for defrauding the power supply. Police first opened investigations in August into the property, which was used for the storage of farming implements and animal breeding. Investigators noted that there were a number of air-conditioning units mounted on the side of one of the constructions which were running 24 hours a day, plus there was a strong smell of marihuana in the area. Surveillance activities and keeping a track on the now detained individual confirmed the first suspicions that he was going there daily to tend to the plants. Having acquired a search warrant, officers carried out a search of the property as well as the detainee’s home in the Pescaderia neighbour-

Business tourism target ALMERIA City is aiming to appeal to business travellers. A delegation from the provincial capital’s Promotion department was in Barcelona last week for the IBTM World Trade Fair, a major event for the global meetings, incentives, conferences and events industry. Visit to Manilva by British Ambassador to Spain THOSE on the panel included representatives and mayors of Manilva, Casares and San Roque as well as local experts on law, banking and trade as well as invited speaker, the new British Ambassador to Spain HE Hugh Elliott who travelled from Madrid. Prior to the meeting he kindly agreed to speak with Euro Weekly News, although due to the forthcoming General Election, he was required under the rule known as Purdah not to make any comment that could be construed as being of a political nature. The Ambassador had met and married his Spanish wife whilst working as a teacher in Madrid and eventually moved back to the UK with his family to take up a position in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Pleasingly for them both, his first overseas appointment was in Madrid and after spells in the UK he also worked for the FCO in both Argentina and Paris before taking a job in private commerce for seven years. He then applied for the role of Ambassador to Spain and was appointed, which for many reasons he is relishing and is looking forward to the future once all matters political are resolved.

Is time running out for tax-free pension transfers? If you are already retired or have chosen to retire in Spain, take steps now to review your pension options before Brexit potentially changes the rules. The option to transfer overseas Many expatriates have chosen to transfer their UK pensions to a Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS). Transferring can consolidate several UK pensions under one tax-efficient roof and provide greater investment diversification than UK schemes, with more freedom to vary income. Many QROPS also offer multi-currency flexibility to hold and draw your funds in your currency of choice, thereby minimising exchange rate risk. And, while most UK pensions are payable only to your spouse on death, a QROPS lets you include other heirs in estate planning. Taxation of QROPS transfers Currently, most expatriates in the

EU can transfer to a QROPS completely tax-free, but there are two key situations in which tax is payable. First, if your combined UK pension benefits exceed the UK’s lifetime allowance - currently £1.055 million - you would face a 25% tax penalty on anything transferred over the limit, even if you are non-UK resident. Once in a QROPS, your funds would never be subject to LTA charges - or any UK taxes - again. The second taxable scenario is if you transfer to a QROPS based outside the EU/EEA (European
Economic Area). In this case (unless you live in the same jurisdiction as the QROPS), the UK would apply a 25% ‘overseas tax charge’ on the whole amount transferred. While expatriates in Spain can escape this tax by transferring to a QROPS based here or in another EEA area, such as Malta, this may change with Brexit. A closing tax-free window? As Brexit eliminates Britain’s current EU commitments including freedom of movement for capital - the Treasury gains more scope to recoup revenue from UK nationals abroad. Many speculate this will prompt the UK government to impose widespread penalties on pension transfers, even within the EU. The UK government has offered reassurance that expatriates will keep the right to make overseas transfers, whatever happens with Brexit - but has stopped short of making any tax promises.
What you need to consider Without a guarantee that taxfree transfers will continue, it is sensible for anyone considering transferring to act sooner rather than later. Timing is especially important here as the administrative process for pension transfers can take several months to complete. However, it cannot be overemphasised that transferring is not appropriate for everyone. Also, all QROPS are not the same - there are differences between providers and jurisdictions that can affect the benefits. Alternative investment structures could offer comparable benefits to QROPS, so take personalised, regulated advice to establish the most suitable approach for you. Pensions are likely to play an important part in your longterm financial security, so it is crucial that you only use a fully authorised and regulated provider. An alarming number of people have lost retirement
savings through pension scams or by reinvesting in failed, unregulated investments that offer no protection. Your adviser should take into account your unique circumstances, income requirements, goals and tolerance for risk - as well as the cross-border tax implications to establish the right solution for you and your family. Even if transferring is not right for you, with so much uncertainty ahead, now is the time to review your pension arrangements so you can secure the retirement of your choice in Spain, whatever happens with Brexit. Three Kings planning ROQUETAS DE MAR Council has begun planning the municipality’s Three Kings processions. The local authority has now put out to tender the contract for organising the events on the evening of January 5 in Aguadulce, El Parador and Roquetas town. The biggest share of the budget, approximately €138,000, goes to the Roquetas procession, which will set out from the Santa Ana castle and pass through much of the town centre before ending up at the Plaza de la Constitucion. There will be 13 floats, each with a different theme, and some with mobile structures. The contract will also include the rental of two junior floats and three with thrones, five trailers and Three Kings costumes, crowns and wigs. In addition, the company chosen will have to supply posters and signposts, 3,000 kilos of sweets, 10,000 little bags of coal, 50 large Three

VERA & DISTRICT LIONS got preparation for Christmas off to an excellent start with t h e s u c c e s s f u l re l a u n c h o f t h e c l u b ’s charity sales store earlier this month. Club President Sheena Selkirk did the honours of cutting the ribbon on the premises located just off the A7 motorway at the Los Gallardos junction following a restocking by a dedicated team of volunteers. What was a very successful morning resulted in raising €650, which will go towards helping those in need who the club assists. The first sale was last Saturday November 23. The sales now continue on every second Saturday morning. The next big Lions-run event will be a Christmas fayre on Sunday December 1 between 10am and 4pm at El Jardin (formerly the Coliseum) just outside Los Gallardos on the Bedar road.

Port tourist appeal ROQUETAS DE MAR port is set to get a new €1 million fish market, which is expected will give the location extra tourist appeal. Unveiling details of the project plans last week, Andalucia Ports Public Agency director Rafael Merino said the fish market would be “pioneering” for the region and “a reference point for other ports.” The project includes the reorganisation of the fishing area, which the agency director said the fishermen themselves had requested, and will see the market located right on the fishing dock. The building has been designed not to block view and to facilitate the entry of visitors. There will also be space on the top floor for a cafe or restaurant. A further feature will be a roof made from sustainable materials. As the port is next to Roquetas’ most emblematic monument, the Santa Ana castle, the hope is that visitors to the area will see it as somewhere worth exploring. “It is going to be a very innovative fish market, which will be life for towns, not only for the fishing sector but also for the tourism s e c t o r, R a f a e l M o r e n o r e marked.

Marihuana and power fraud GUARDIA CIVIL seized 216 marihuana plants and neutralised an illegal power supply connection in a property in the El Parador de las Hortichuelas district of Roquetas de Mar. The Guardia investigation into the property followed information from a
company specialising in the installation of security doors suggesting there could be an indoor marihuana plantation in the El Parador area. Sure enough, the Guardia discovered a property virtually filled with large marihuana plants as well as the
unauthorised hook up to the electricity network. The Guardia said the investigation remained open and they had not ruled out the arrest for those responsible for crimes against public health and defrauding the power supply.

Replacing a lost or expired British passport from Spain WITH Brexit possibly around the corner, if you have less than six months life left on your passport it would be a good idea to renew sooner rather than later. Quite often when different official forms are digitalised, it becomes more rather than less confusing and you need to have a degree in programming in order to proceed. For once however, the British government has made things much easier and far less complicated in applying for a replacement passport if yours has been lost or is about to expire. No longer do you need to supply lots of forms including birth certificates and to have a photograph physically signed on the back by someone who knows you and it really is now quite easy if you have access to a computer. Very simply visit https://www.gov. uk/overseas-passports and you’re taken through the whole process step by step and the only drawback is that there isn’t a single page detailing everything including costs as you have to go through a page at a time. There is however a passports link which does give quite a lot of information on the website, but not everything. Even if you have lost or had your passport stolen, you are not precluded for applying online for a replacement, but you have to declare it lost in advance also online. As a real bonus you can now use digital photograph and there are quite explicit rules about what is acceptable as you navigate the website and whilst it may take a couple of attempts, provided you remove any glasses and stand in front of a white background, a selfie taken with a
phone will probably work ok. If you are not happy using a phone camera, then most towns have at least one print shop where they can photograph you and give you a digital image on a memory stick or card. As you progress through the procedure you will be best served by having access to details of your previous passport, but it isn’t actually essential and the site does report back to a human in the UK who can check. When you post your photograph, you will be asked to give details (including email address) of a person of standing who can confirm that they know you and that the photograph is of you. The whole process can take up to six weeks from start to finish and this will include delivery via courier to your address in Spain and you have to pay with a debit or credit card for the cost of the passport (depends upon number of pages) and courier fee at the time of submitting the application online. You will be sent a special code which will allow you to track your passport through all of its stages. In the event that you have lost your passport and need a temporary replacement, that can also be done online. It is more expensive than a normal passport, is usually good for one round trip only and will normally be issued by the British Consulate in Malaga. For those without computers, it is still possible to apply through the post and there are even different shops with English-speaking staff scattered around Spain where for a fee they will help you complete the forms and send them off for you.

Essential first-aid ADRA Local Police officers have been learning essential first-aid skills and how to use a defibrillator in Civil Protection-run training days. In the most recent sessions the officers practiced cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR. Civil Protection personnel took them through all the first assistance basics to guarantee they can act effectively in an emergency situation. Wacky Races mourns loss THE Villaricos Wacky Races team is mourning the tragic loss of one their valued members. Mark Burgess, the owner of the Plaza Bar in Villaricos, passed away on November 6 after several months of illness at the age of just 52. There was a celebration of his life evening in his memory on Friday November 15. A keen sailor and ardent supporter of Portsmouth Football Club, Mark was the
founder of the ‘new’ Wacky Races, which began again in 2015 after a four-year gap. He contributed a great deal to the annual fundraiser’s events over the last five years. The organising group members have now proposed a ‘Mark Burgess’ Trophy for next year’s event, scheduled for Saturday April 25, probably for the best fancy-dressed cart and/or team.

Rebuilding the coast THE revamping of the Torrevieja coastline began on November 25 with an ambitious project of regeneration of the beach of Los Locos that will continue for a decade. The first delivery of 12,000 cubic metres of sand, originally planned for the beginning of 2020, was brought forward in view of the impact caused by the storm in September which left the central section of the beach with barely two metres of sand between the promenade and the sea, when a few years ago in the narrowest area there were around 15 metres. The objective is to widen this central section of the beach by 20 metres, which has been gradually receding in recent years. They will use sand extracted from a Murcia quarry which is clearly a larger and denser granulate, that should withstand the impact of new storms with more guarantees. In 2017 a study of the dynamics of sea currents in this urban beach area was carried out to determine which could be the best option when regenerating the coastal space, with a budget of more than €65,000.

Charity food drive THE Franciscan shelter for men in Gandia is holding its annual Christmas food drive in aid of the 70 men being cared for there. The shelter is urging the community to come together to help those less fortunate in the season of giving. All they ask is that members of the public pick up a few extra bits of non-perishable and unexpired food when buying their shopping and drop them off at their various drop off points. These are located in La Xara, Ondara, Benidoleig, Benissa, Javea, Denia, Teulada. Oliva and La Drova. Some examples of suitable donations would be pasta, rice, dried lentils, tinned tomatoes, tinned tuna, cleaning product and toiletries. Euro Weekly attended and was able to see first-hand the women’s amazing work. The fantastic €1,000 donation is funding brand new Knitted Knocker Kits that will be distributed among Spanish Cancer Associations across Andalucia. The thoughtful kits look to help women with breast cancer all over Spain. Maria Bailey, president of Knitted Knockers, has already launched them in Sevilla and will continue the expanse. The inspiring group met up at the Spanish Association Against Cancer centre in Fuengirola, where Vice-president Paloma welcomed us and highlighted the amazing services the centre provides for cancer patients across the province. She spoke fondly of Maria: “This project is amazing. We simply put Maria in contact with hospitals and the women who need her help.” Smiles all around, the women posed cheque in hand. Safety drive MORE than 1,100 schoolchildren from Almuñecar and La Herradura spent last week learning the basic rules of road safety. The eight to 12-year-old pupils from San Miguel de ALmuñecar and Las Gaviotas de La Herradura Schools visited the Road Safety Education Caravan of Fundacion Mapfre for theoretical and practical workshops. According to organisers, the aim was ‘laying the foundations for safer, responsible and respectful citizens’ when it comes to road use and knowledge. The safety caravan was parked up at Aquatropic park in collaboration with the Local Police. A spokesperson said: “It is a fun way for schoolchildren to learn to avoid risk behaviours, anticipate accidents, recognise correct procedures and the meaning and importance of traffic signs and prevention rules.” A team of specialised monitors gave theoretical classes on basic concepts related to safety and prevention. Afterwards, practical sessions were held in a go-kart circuit where everything learned was applied.

Christmas crowning glory ALMERIA Council has revealed there will be a Christmas crowning glory at the end of what has been a magical year for the city. This year Almeria has been making the utmost of its status as national gastronomy capital, and the three 10-metre high crown installations made up of 155,000 lights, plus Christmassy music show, are seen as fitting Festive Season decorations. The giant crowns will stand on the Mirador de la Rambla from December 5 to January 6. City Promotion councillor Carlos Sanchez said the elaborate decorations were a way for the council to thank all the city’s residents for their commitment to the gastronomy 2019 initiative, commenting, “I am sure they will be enjoyed as much be adults as children.” The councillor also stressed the aim was to continue to promote the city as a foodie destination, and said that Christmas would mark the transition for the use of the new ‘Almeria, Gastronomy City’ logo from the beginning of 2020 onwards.
THE first of 28 new buses reaching 18-metres in length were deployed on the roads in Palma last week. A presentation was held on one of the new buses on Avenida Antoni Maura, where it was explained by EMT executives that the buses will be tested on two routes - numbers 3 and 15. They will later be tried out on lines 5, 7 and 8, so that drivers can get used to the different turning angles of the city. The 18-metre buses, built by Scania, are costing Palma Town Hall €11.2 million. These buses, plus shorter ones of 12- and 15-metres made by Iveco and Man, will be phased in so that they can all be in operation by spring of next year. The buses run on natural gas and use solar energy for interior equipment. They have control cameras, four doors, two screens as well as LED lighting.

Another bank blunder
AN overnight error with its comput er system has meant that thou sands of customers of the TSB Bank (which was taken over by Spain’s Banco Sabadell) have been left without funds. Salary payments, pensions and other transfers did not go into cus tomer accounts as they should, leaving many in a difficult financial situation, unable to pay bills which were falling due. The bank apolo gised and invited customers to keep a record of any financial losses that may have occurred so that compen sation could be paid.

A SPANISH judge has recommended to prosecutors that former Syrian Vice President Rifaat AlAssad, the ex iled uncle of Bashar Assad, and 13 others be put on trial charged with belonging to a criminal organisation and money laundering. He suggests that AlAssad and his eight sons along with others have sys tematically laundered money taken from Syria over a period of 40 years. This judge ordered the confiscation of 500 properties in 2018, many of which were in Marbella and Puerto Banus alongside a huge tract of land

If the Agencia Tributaria has seized your bank account, this is almost certainly be cause of unpaid Spanish tax over a period of time. Uber taxi EVER since private hire (VTC) company Uber arrived in Spain, it has been in conflict with taxi dri vers (who pay large amounts for their licences) and many city councils. Now in a breakthrough move, it has agreed that it will offer taxi and VTC services through its UberX platform on a trial basis with 50 taxis in Madrid. If this is successful then the company hope to recruit many of the 16,000 licensed taxi drivers in the city thanks to a change in lo cal law which allows set prices to be charged.

Bank raises mortgage rates BANKS in Spain have been offering very competitive interest rates on mortgages, but one of the largest, Santander, has announced that it is dropping out of the price war. Indeed it is planning to put up its rates on variable mortgages as it tries to protect its profitability
which has been dropping during 2019. Mortgages attached to the Euribor rate are still low when compared to many other countries, but the bank is determined to make more money from its current lending estimated at more than €50 billion.

BLACK FRIDAY: Survival of the fittest.
New Fintech business PLAID is a financial technology company based in San Francisco which builds a technology platform that allows consumers and businesses to interact with their bank accounts, check balances, and
make payments through financial technology applications. After an initial successful launch in the UK where it has taken over two smaller companies it is now expanding to open operations in
France, Ireland and Spain. Initial Spanish arrangements include agreements with BBVA, La Caixa and Santander and this Fintech company is now worth more than €250 million.
Black Friday originated in Philadelphia due to the volume of pedestrian and vehicle traffic which occurred on that day and it has since been adopted all over the world. Another suggestion is that it is the day when retail stores start going into profit for the year, with their accounts coming out of the red and going into the black. Whatever the reason, this has become a popular day to look for bargains all over the world and Spain joins in the fun with special offers being made both online and in store. As different companies fight for market share, so Black Friday has actually become stretched and offers start in the middle of November. Probably the biggest online participant is Amazon which does make a number of very decent discounts from normal prices and most of the major retail outlets in Spain now join in, so there are bargains to be found, but hope fully, unlike some other coun tries, there will be no fights at the tills.

Higher wages for less work. No education fees. Free child care. Pen sion reimbursements for women (not costed!) Increased benefits for all, etc
etc. Plus, to appeal to its envy riddled young leftie followers, the persecu tion of anyone who has been suc cessful in just about any form of capi talist enterprise whatsoever. A careful look at their Nationalisa tion plans alone should be enough to wave glaring red flags. Where in their party of misfits are they going to find all the expertise of experienced busi ness personal to replace those they intend to oust from these highly spe cialised managerial positions? Can you really imagine the likes of Diana Abbott running the board rooms of British Rail? Let me quickly add, that the rest of this shower in the race for power is none too im pressive either. But I would vote for any of them, including the Greens, if it helped keep this bunch of antise matic commies away from our chil dren’s future. For all their sakes we owe them at least that. Pause to Prepare WELL here we are at the start of another year! All right, I know it’s not January yet, but it is Advent, which is generally recog nised as the start of the Church Year. For Advent means ‘coming ’ and is the time when we Christians traditionally prepare ourselves to celebrate Christmas, as we re member Jesus coming to Earth to be born in the manger in Bethlehem, which of course is the start of the Christian story. But far more importantly, Advent is also the time when we remember that as a part of his teaching, Jesus often spoke of his eventual return, promising that at some fu ture date he would come again to set up his Kingdom; so during Advent we are called upon to prepare ourselves for this event, ensuring that we are ready. And yes, I know that over the years many cranks have discredited this aspect of Christ ian teaching by making all manner of extrav agant claims, with forecasts of doom and ‘end of the World’ scenarios. But such irra tional behaviour on behalf of the few, shouldn’t prevent the rest of us from seri
ous consideration of the very real teaching of Jesus, echoed in these words from the Creed, acknowledged, accepted and regu larly recited by Christians from all branches of the Christian Church: “He ascended into heaven, And is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his king dom will have no end.” So yes, in this Advent season I believe we should all take time to challenge our faith, to ensure that however little we may under stand, yet we accept Jesus at his word and prepare ourselves for his unending king dom. It’s pretty exciting stuff really, and if only we can get to grips with it, this promise makes an incredible difference to our un derstanding of death and the loss of those we love. Ah, it’s good to be back! MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man WOW that was an unpleasant couple of weeks. You may have noticed that my column has been missing. Unfortunately I wasn’t on holiday but was in hospital. All in all everything went very well. If I did have one grump it would be that it’s very frustrating that, as I have several ongoing prob lems, the doctors don’t listen to the pa tient. I am diabetic and one of the treat ments they gave me had steroids in it which affects my diabetes which then went off the scale. They won’t let you administer your own insulin so I had to take what I was given which they decid ed would be less than I take at home. I pointed out they wouldn’t be able to control my normal levels with this dosage let alone the crazy elevated ones I had now. Just to give you an idea it’s normally 100 and was now hitting 400! Eventually, after me refusing to take anything with steroid in until they listened to me, the two doctors in
volved talked to each other and we got it sorted. But it was a worrying few days. There has to be petrol station eti quette. Please tell me why people fill their car then go off to pay whilst you are sitting behind them waiting, along with all the others at other pumps, and your one decides to then do their week ly shopping. What! Firstly, why would you shop in a petrol station? Except for chocolate or maybe the wife’s last minute forgotten birthday or Christmas present. And secondly, if you do decide to do it, move your car first. You must realise how annoying it is to have to sit there watching all the cars that arrive after you, fill up and go whilst you are sitting there like a lemon. Then, after what seems to be a lifetime, they come strolling back to their car. I’m always so tempted to say something buy if Mrs S is with me I’m not allowed. Maybe the petrol stations should have a sign up, but then I guess they don’t care as long as people are spending money. Or give me a job controlling petrol station traffic along with the other job I’d like at Carrefour moving all the cars out of the disabled bays that don’t have blue badges! Ah, it’s good to be back!

“ONE in seven guests spent more than £400 to attend a wedding with the high est cost coming in at £1,000.” A recent study found that one in three millennials would fall into debt this year: a quarter of those surveyed said they’d missed paying bills or rent after splashing too much cash on clothes, gifts, accommo dation and hen/stag parties. One in 10 said they’d been forced to sell possessions to meet the costs, while one in seven was forced to move back in with their parents. The war and postwar generations look on with incredulity, but should we? We’re all a product of our environment and the times in which our values were formed and developed. Wartime kids grew up with next to nothing, while postwar baby boomers had their values significantly im pacted by their wartime parents. But millenials have grown up in a very different world. As a generation they’ve been presented with everything they

Little wonder they have no ap preciation of the value of money they’ve had it all handed to them on a plate thanks to their parents’ generation. Maybe an up bringing on Scrabble, Cluedo and Monop oly would have served them better. Additionally, “42 per cent of the study’s 2,886 respondents felt ‘under pressure’ to make their wedding look appealing in pho tographs on social media.” How pathetic! It’s for the couple and the families, not the general public. How sad that that these bridestobe can’t simply think about the importance of the vows they’ll be making instead of wor rying about how they look on Instagram. Don’t get me wrong! It’s perfectly fine to want any event to look good and be the
best it can be, but surely that should be for the benefit of those attending? What a weird idea that it should be for ‘social me dia.’ Finally and on a different note, as we head further into election season, I leave you with this gem from Mark Twain: ‘Politicians and diapers must be changed often and for the same reason.’ Haha! PROTECTED PRINCE THIS Prince Andrew business is an absolute disgrace. And we can all be sure this will be dusted nicely under the carpet. At least we can thank our lucky stars he has been sacked from his cushy day job. To think he was earning half a mil lion pounds of hardearned tax payers money. We were inadver tently funding the comings and goings of a man who was either involved in or knew about some disgusting actions. Now the FBI want to interview him under oath and the UK will no doubt be protecting him. Why should we? He is part of the royal family but he has certainly not served his country well. Of course, in a few months, the topic won’t even be open for discus sion. Someone will have cleverly pushed it all aside and we will be enraged with some new thing. People like him need to come down from their protected palaces and finally face the conse quences. David Miller
Weekly to express my admiration for the Spanish Health System. I have seen your articles about the issues they are having and how they don’t have enough staff. To me this just makes it even more admirable. I think it’s time to actually give them the praise they deserve. Since I came to Spain, I’ve had different health problems and the doctors have al ways been fantastic. You get the occasional person who is rude, but that is just part of life! I recently went to my local health centre and got the winter flu shot like I do every year. When I think I’m not even originally from this country and I still get exceptional service, it just shows how good the European system is. Let’s give these people the praise they deserve. Joining together ON Monday November 25, millions of people around the globe came together to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The day raises awareness for women subjected to rape, domestic violence and other forms of violence. The date was set in honour of the 1960 assassinations of the three Mirabal sisters in the Dominican Republic. Dictator Rafael Trujillo ordered the killings of the political activists after they opposed his rule, thus turning the sisters into symbols of feminine resistance. The United Nations and the European Commission encourage governments and organisations to celebrate activities in support of the movement. In Spain, a law was unanimously approved in 2004 to fight against the murders of women by their partners or ex-partners. Consensus was reached again in 2017 with a State Pact against Gender Violence. Since 2003, 1,027 women have been murdered by their partners, with 52 murders so far in 2019. This year, general agreement has been broken by Vox, now part of eight autonomous governments and 365 town halls. The far-right party has blocked the approval of conviction statements. Vox argues that ‘violence has no gender’ and refuses to adopt the term ‘domestic violence.’ The secretary of State for Equality, Soledad Murillo, considers their actions “a serious lack of responsibility and respect towards the victims of gender violence.”

Admiration DEAR Letters, I read your article ‘Pregnant Australian Firefighter is doing it for the Community,’ Novem ber 13. This reported that Kat RobinsonWilliams is doing dangerous firefighting even though she is expecting a baby. I hope that she will take care of herself and her baby because as well as the danger of the bushfires, firefighting foams have been found to con tain harmful cancercausing chemicals. Is it time to give all UK cops a gun? The penalties/punishment needs to be far more severe. Too much of this sort of crime gets away with a slap on the wrist. Titled ‘Images of a year,’ the exhibition at the Unica ja Foundation Centre in the provincial capital features some 50 images captured by 19 EFE Agency photo journalists. Subjects include the change of political scene in Andalucia following the re gional elections, the consti tution of the Andalucia par liament and the party campaigns. There are also shots fo cusing on art, culture, sport and Andalucia’s traditions. Many of the photos have wellknown people as the focus, among them Italian actress Claudia Cardinale when she was in Almeria to receive her ‘Tabernas de Cine’ award.

PAINFUL REALITY: The Tijola mayor made the point that in the last three years, seven out of 10 gender-violence related murders have been in localities with less than 100,000 inhabitants. GENDER-BASED violence in rural areas was the focus of an event staged in Tijola. “In rural areas we have to fight against gender-based violence with more effort, given that in the last three years, seven out of 10 sexist murders have been in localities with less than 100,000 inhabitants,” Tijola mayor Jose
Juan Martinez told the some 100 participants in the Gender Violence in the Rural Sphere Day. “This painful reality” means the smallest municipalities have to double their efforts and allocate more resources to prevention and to assisting and protecting victims,” the mayor stressed. He made particular reference to

Almanzora highway plans moving forward THE plans to complete the Almanzora highway look as though they are moving forward. Junta de Andalucia Public Works, Infrastructure and Land Planning regional minister Marifran Carazo has confirmed that the contract for the connection between the A-334 and the A-7 motorway should have been put out to tender before the end of this year. Carazo made the comment during an appearance in the regional parliament, during which she repeated that the Andalucia government is “committed to this infrastructure, which is highly anticipated and very necessary, and which in hardly nine months we have put in motion.” The regional minister made the point that works on the penultimate stretch of the highway, the Cucador-Concepcion section, have begun, and that the Junta de Andalucia President Juanma Moreno was present for the inauguration following the signing of the €25.3 million contract in September. She said the works are now in full
Seeking solutions A WATER deficit in the Almanzora Valley was the central issue at a meeting of the Living Aquifers Association and the Almanzora Water Defence Platform with the Junta de Andalucia Agriculture, Fishing and Sustainable delegate in Almeria, Aranzazu Martin. Martin outlined the Junta’s position on investigative sur veys in the region as a first step for providing emergency wells exclusively for supplying Almanzora municipalities with problems, notably Albox and Olula del Rio as a result of the closure of transfers from the Negratin reservoir. But sales really took off when Mary Whitehouse, selfappointed morality campaigner, picked a very public fight with the corporation, and demanded that it be banned. In a letter to the then BBC Director General, Charles Curran, the ghastly Christian busybody fumed: ‘One teacher told us of how she found a class of small boys with their trousers undone, singing the song... We trust you will agree with us that it is no part of the function of the BBC to be the vehicle of songs which stimulate this kind of behaviour...’ Curran effectively told Whitehouse to take a running jump at a rolling doughnut, and gleefully pointed out that her crusade against ‘My DingA Ling’ boosted its popularity. He wrote: ‘We decided that it could be broadcast… We did not think it would disturb or emotionally agitate its listeners and we believe

The small firm in Oxfordshire where I had my first job after leaving school had engaged a new 19year old filing clerk to start at 9am on a Monday morning. 1979 we met up to form the Gay Hu manist Group, later to become the Gay and Lesbian Humanist Associa tion (GALHA). I, together with my late partner Brian Parry, formed a small publish ing company called ParryDuke Enter prises to take care of the group’s communications requirements. We

published a regular newsletter, and in 1981 created a festive ‘Mary and Child’ greetings card, which proved surprisingly popular. I was reminded of the work we did with the group now called LGBT Hu manist when, a few weeks back, I received an invitation to a lunch in London to celebrate the 40th an niversary of the group that Brian and I helped form. The invitation from LGBT Human ists for the November 24 event con tained a message from Andrew Cop son, Chief Executive of Humanists UK that said: “As well as fighting hard hitting campaigns to combat religious bigotry and homophobia, the Gay Humanist Group led the way in pro viding humanist weddings to same sex couples even in its early years. “Battles we have fought for decades are not yet won, and we cannot take our victories including ending Section 28, decriminalising gay sex and samesex marriage for granted. In the current climate, we must be vigilant to make sure progress for which we have fought so hard is not undone, or reversed.” Nothing would have pleased me more than to join the celebrants, but sadly a full diary made the trip to the UK impossible. Unless I’m called to Glory Everlast ing in the interim, I’ll definitely attend the 50th anniversary.

I then decided I did not want to work for a company with this kind of attitude and decided to leave. As I reached the exit, a door opened and a voice called out ‘Mister Worboys?1 A tall smiling Scotsman strode to wards me holding out his hand. “I re ally am sorry to keep you waiting. My secretary should have come out and explained, but we had a bit of a crisis. Come on in and I’ll tell you what hap pened.” I had a most enjoyable three years with this company, gaining two pro motions, travelling all over Europe and making a couple of lifelong friends. Had I decided to leave that of fice 30 seconds earlier I would have missed all this. This was my true ‘Slid ing Doors’ experience. Then there are the near escapes. If I have nine lives, there are probably only two left. Some of the close shaves were also a matter of several seconds. But that’s another story.

SLAIN AT HOME GOALS from Son Heungmin, Lucas Moura and Harry Kane saw Totten ham win 32 at West Ham in Jose Mourinho’s debut game at the helm. Jose Mourinho’s first game in charge of Spurs saw his new team claim a 32 Premier League win away to London rivals West Ham. Mourinho left Christian Eriksen on the bench as a firsthalf goal and as sist from Son Heungmin helped end a run of 12 away Premier League games without a victory for Spurs, despite a late home fightback. The South Korean star opened the scoring in the 36th minute and then set up Lucas Moura to get Mourinho’s men up and running, Harry Kane adding to the scoreline as Spurs climbed to sixth in the table. Michail Antonio and Angelo Ogbon na netted late consolations but West Ham continue to struggle after a bright start to the season. Manuel Pellegrini’s side have now lost six of their past seven Premier League games.
Kane struck in the third minute of the Mourinho era but the striker had strayed offside from Dele Alli’s pass. Serge Aurier’s clumsy aerial chal lenge on Robert Snodgrass in the box went unpunished before Son’s snap shot tested Roberto Jimenez, the un derfire goalkeeper equal to the effort. Roberto was beaten twice before the break, though, Alli’s pass freeing Son to shuffle away from Issa Diop and lash home a powerful leftfooted strike. Son then created the second after fine work on the left touchline by Alli, the forward crossing low for Lucas to get in front of Aaron Cresswell and nudge home from close range. Lucas dragged a great chance wide after the restart but it was soon 30, Aurier given too much room on the right to measure a cross Kane met with a downward header to move in to third place on Spurs’ alltime top goalscorers’ list. Substitute Antonio gave the home fans something to cheer with a fine
finish in the 73rd minute to deny Mourinho, who gave Eriksen a brief late cameo, a clean sheet. And, after an offside Declan Rice was denied by VAR, West Ham scored a sec ond deep into added time when Ogbonna beat Paulo Gazzaniga with a low shot from a corner, but it was too little, too late for the Hammers. Another defeat for West Ham and their supporters really aren’t happy ham mers at all and it’s got to be only a matter of time before the Manag er gets the axe with fans baying for him now at the East London Club, losing for them at home to arch rivals Tot tenham the way they did is simply not satisfactory.

SOME 600 runners pounded the streets of Roquetas de Mar for Sunday’s half marathon challenge. Roquetas Mayor Gabriel Amat was at the starting line on Avenida Juan Carlos I to give the participants the ready, steady, go at 10am on an ideal sunny day for the third edition of the an nual event. The day earlier the young sters running in the Media Kids junior half marathon had had to contend with grey skies and strong winds. Six goal draw OLI MCBURNIE’S stoppagetime equaliser earned Sheffield United a 33 draw against Manchester United at Bramall Lane in the Premier League on Sunday after the visitors had been on the verge of a thrilling comeback vic tory. Coming into the contest on the back of one win in their last 10 Premier League away games, either side of the sum mer, Manchester were immediately on the back foot and had goalkeeper De Gea to thank for keeping them in the match early on. They could not hold out for long, though, and Fleck bun dled home the opener in the 19th minute after De Gea had denied Lundstram. The home side did not relent, creating plenty more openings and pressing their opponents at every opportuni ty. Seven minutes after the interval they went 20 up, with Lys Mousset drilling home his fourth goal of the season. United looked dead and buried as they struggled to get back into the contest after the break, but 19yearold Bran don Williams’s first senior goal 18 minutes from time sparked them into life. Another academy graduate, Mason Greenwood, came off the bench to level things up five minutes later, before Marcus Rashford completed the turnaround in the 79th minute with a fierce strike, earning United a possible win reminiscent of the Alex Ferguson years. However, substitute McBurnie denied the visitors in stoppage time to add a further twist to the breathless en counter, squeezing a strike past De Gea, with the goal awarded after a lengthy VAR review.
