BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS MOTRIL has celebrated International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women with a programme of events. Inmaculada Torres Alaminos, councillor for Social Action, Equality and Citizens’ Participation, explained that the talks, workshops, film shows, debates, round tables and meetings organised by the Municipal Women’s Committee and the town hall were not limited to the day itself. Some events had begun earlier and others would continue afterwards, she said. The common denominator of the Rompe las Barreras (Break down the barriers), was a direct call to all women who were suffering, Torres said, so they could be aware there are many groups ready to listen to them, support them and help them to take action. The councillor also took the opportunity of thanking all of those involved in the Women’s Committee, not only for their perseverance and capacity for hard work but for organising events for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. NERJA’S NATURAL The Cueva de Nerja welcomes an international press meeting that concludes the 60th anniversary of its discovery. Among the participants are professionals from the New York Times, the Diario de Noticias, from Portugal, and the association of Ibero-American press correspondents, among others. THE meeting allows journalists from all corners of the world to witness the caves firsthand, including its environment and the scientific work that is done from its Conservation Institute. Around 20 professionals will be able to check the biological, geological and archaeological values of the cave as well as its
present and future potential. From there, they are invited to share with readers and audiences all about the grotto. The Caves of Nerja are one of Spain’s major tourist attractions and are a series of caverns that stretch for almost five kilometres. Concerts are regularly held in one of the chambers, which
forms a natural amphitheatre. The caves were rediscovered in 1959 by five friends, who entered through a narrow sinkhole known as ‘La Mina.’ This forms one of the two natural entrances to the cave system. A third entrance was created in 1960 to allow easy access for tourists, just south of the Sierras of Tejeda and

In February 2012 it was announced that possibly Neanderthal cave paintings dated in 42,000 years had been discovered there. The event will close the 60th anniversary of the discovery of the cave, which has been celebrated with tributes to the discoverers, the publication of a commemorative book, parades and the traditional International Festival of Music and Dance.

Whale calf dead
A WHALE calf about five metres long first spotted stranded on a beach in Rincon de la Victoria last Friday, has been recovered dead. Its body was seen in the water of Baños del Carmen on Saturday, but could not be rescued due to the waves pushing the body out to sea. Finally, it reappeared in El Palo, near the El Morlaco area, at the height of the Villa Ficus. This calf belongs to the common rorcual species and in adulthood, it can reach between 20 and 24 metres in length. It was discovered for the first time on the coast of
Rincon de la Victoria, where a man managed to reintroduce it to the water after several attempts. Initially, the animal returned to the sea, but as it must have been already sick and weak, it appeared hours later in the vicinity of the Baños del Carmen, in Malaga City, already lifeless, according to the specialists who located it. The appearance of this species of whale is normal in this area since it is present in these waters, although less frequently than the three species of dolphins that are common in Malaga coastal waters.

Take them home for Christmas THE Costa Animal Society (CAS) expressed sincere gratitude to all the animal-lovers who have helped them this year. There were thanks for members, those who dropped coins in tins around the town, those who visited their shop or attended events and local businesses. There were special thanks to everyone who
adopted an animal: “It is always a joy to place a homeless animal in a loving home,” CAS said. As always there are animals looking for homes. Evie, found last March on the streets of Nerja, is now about a year old and as she matures she is growing into a lovely-natured, sweet dog that loves cuddles and gets
along with other dogs and cats. Buddy, too, would like a home. A wonderful male Alsatian cross, he has a loving personality and only wants to be part of a family again but has been cared for by CAS in kennels for nearly two years. “We think he has been overlooked in the past because of his size and an unfortunate name, so

Ten new jobs ALMUÑECAR Town Hall has taken on 10 staff for the Social Services and Maintenance departments. All were previously unemployed and engaged under a programme co-financed by the Andalucia’s regional government and the European Social Fund, the EU’s principal financial channel for supporting employment in member states. The 10 new staff members are the last of the 104 town hall employees now in work thanks to the scheme, said Development, Employment and Maintenance councillor Beatriz Gonzalez Orce. She recently welcomed the new employees, reminding them that they were now on the town hall staff and asking for their support and dedication. “At the same time I’m offering to collaborate on anything that crops up while you are at the town hall,” Gonzalez Orce said. The 10 new employees selected and engaged by Andalucia’s Employment Service belonged to the Junta’s programmes for the over-30’s and over-45’s. The majority will work in the Social Services and Maintenance departments for six or seven months and the town hall has received €893,800 to cover wages and social security payments.

Open for business THE Andalucian High Court has given shopping centres in Malaga City freedom to decide their opening hours. The court has overthrown restrictions imposed by the previous government that excludes large areas of the city from being able to freely impose their opening times. The restrictions that prevent large department stores from opening on Sundays and bank holidays have been lifted by the courts. Shops that are less than 300 square metres and do not belong to big brands, have always been able to open freely. Up until this moment, only shops in areas considered to receive a large tourist influx
were given freedom during Easter and the month of August. The town hall and the National Association of Large Distribution Companies, which includes brands like El Corte Ingles, Ikea, Leroy Merlin, Carrefour and MediaMarkt, have been fighting these restrictions for years. They have been demanding that the declaration of tourist zones is applied throughout the city 365 days a year. The judicial resolution bases the new decision on the fact that the Junta of Andalucia didn’t explain why the time freedom was only applied to the Historic Centre and La Malagueta or why it was limited to Easter and August.
Fatal hit
A MAN was killed after being run over by a vehicle in Malaga. The accident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, November 24 on the A-357. Emergency services 112 informed the man was hit at Km 63 and died as a result of the impact. The emergency number was called at around 4am by two separate individuals who alerted paramedics and the Guardia Civil. Emergency services confirmed the man had died due to injuries sustained on impact. Several people witnessed the car running the man over, but the circumstances surrounding the accident are still unknown. At the time of the accident, the man’s age and identity was not known.
THE Lux Mundi Foundation in Malaga has organised several interesting activities for the community to enjoy over the festive season. On December 3, the Foundation’s centre will host a fun and informal photography workshop from 3pm, aimed at improving attendees’ skills and knowledge with the guidance of professional photographer Rob Bell. Welcoming every level, the class will explore various styles of photography and computer software. Those that wish to attend must bring their own camera to the workshop, with the class costing €5, discounted at €4 for those holding a Friends of Lux Mundi card. The Foundation has also organised a wonderful excursion to see the Christmas lights in Sevilla and Carmona from December 10 to 12. Wastewater gets the treatment LUISA GARCIA CHAMORRO, Motril mayor, recently visited the town’s wastewater treatment plant (EDAR). The installation treats 17,000 cubic metres of wastewater each day and Garcia Chamorro stressed that Motril residents could be proud of the “basic and very important” service provided by Aguas y Servicios. This ensured the “optimum levels” of the treated water that was discharged into the sea, she said. The mayor drew particular attention to the company’s “vision for the future and improving facilities” while thanking its representatives and employees. “Improving these installations improves the coastal environment,” Garcia Chamorro said. Aguas y Services manager Justo Saurez explained that the Motril EDAR complied with all wastewater legislation and that he was most satisfied with the way that the plant functioned. Over the last five years the company had invested almost €4 million in the installation and Suarez emphasised that investigation, development and innovation were key to the EDAR’s future. The company was currently studying tertiary treatment of wastewater by removing inorganic compounds and substances including nitrogen and phosphorus. This would then allow the water to be reused for agricultural purposes and irrigating golf courses, Suarez said.

Keep on dancing Dogs get their park MOTRIL Council have announced that they will open a dance hall for senior citizens to enjoy next year. Taking advantage of her visit to the Autumn Festival on November 22, Mayor Luisa García Chamorro revealed the news to 250 attendees. Chamorro stated that the council will provide a space for senior residents that will be easily accessible, after the council received several requests from
members of the community. Chamorro expressed her satisfaction to give back to elders in the municipality and that the council “works to serve them, as they have already given so many years of their life to making Motril the town that it is,” adding that “they deserve the best.” The new dance hall has already been included in next year’s budget and the council will be responsible for organising its programme of activities.
ALMUÑECAR will soon have its first dogs-allowed park. The town hall is providing the park in response to public demand and a request from the APAMA animal protection association, Environment councillor Luis Aragon Work announced.
The 420-square metre park, located in the northern zone of the Jardines de Alhucemas gardens, will be surrounded by a 140-metre fence with an automatic gate. The park will cost €8,072 to install and is due to open by the end of next week.
Solidarity breaks records FOOD donations in Malaga City and across the province broke records as people chipped in to help the needy. The collection promoted by Bancosol amassed 643,700 kilograms of food and hygiene products in two days. The ‘Gran Recogida’ or ‘Big Collection’ was celebrated on Friday November 22 and Saturday 23 in supermarkets all over Malaga Province. Last year 616,000 kilos were col-
lected, with organisers hoping for 700,000 this year. However, taking into account the heavy rain, Bancosol is happy with the outcome. All of the food has been taken to the Bancosol warehouse where products will be separated by type. All donations are well received, although non-perishable products were especially requested. Oil, legumes or canned goods are good prod-
ucts, as well as rice and pasta, which are cheap and can feed a lot of people. The collection saw 4,000 volunteers of all ages helping out in 300 supermarkets. Bancosol have profusely thanked the people who gave their time up to help the cause. Big supermarkets who joined the initiative were Mercadona, Alcampo, Aldi, Carrefour, Día, El Corte Inglés, Eroski, Lidl, Más and Supersol.

A long cultural, social life MOTRIL’S Centro Cultural and Recreativo recently celebrated its annual gala and 89th anniversary at the Teatro Calderon. “It is impossible to understand the history of Motril without the Centro Cultural Recreativo,” said the local mayor Luisa Maria Garcia Chamorro, as she congratulated its board and president Nicolas Garcia Rodriguez. “For a very long time
Motril’s cultural and social life revolved round the ‘Cultural,’ giving it extraordinary value,” she added. Inmaculada Torres Alaminos, Motril’s councillor for Social Action, Equality and Citizens’ Participation thanked the centre for its “open nature” and the activities that it carried out with care and affection. The centre had, and would continue to have, the municipality’s unquestioned support, she said.
It was fitting that the annual gala was held at the Teatro Calderon, the councillor pointed out, as during the mid-1950s the theatre was managed by the centre which organised some of Motril’s most emblematic events. The Cultural Recreativo gala included performances by the Ingenio and Alegria choirs, which have close links to the centre, and there was always public recognition for Motril residents who had contributed to its continued existence.

Replacing a lost or expired British passport from Spain WITH Brexit possibly around the corner, if you have less than six months life left on your passport it would be a good idea to renew sooner rather than later. Quite often when different official forms are digitalised, it becomes more rather than less confusing and you need to have a degree in programming in order to proceed. For once however, the British government has made things much easier and far less complicated in applying for a replacement passport if yours has been lost or is about to expire. No longer do you need to supply lots of forms including birth certificates and to have a photograph physically signed on the back by someone who knows you and it really is now quite easy if you have access to a computer. Very simply visit https://www.gov. uk/overseas-passports and you’re taken through the whole process step by step and the only drawback is that there isn’t a single page detailing everything including costs as you have to go through a page at a time. There is however a passports link which does give quite a lot of information on the website, but not everything. Even if you have lost or had your passport stolen, you are not precluded for applying online for a replacement, but you have to declare it lost in advance also online. As a real bonus you can now use digital photograph and there are quite explicit rules about what is acceptable as you navigate the website and whilst it may take a couple of attempts, provided you remove any glasses and stand in front of a white background, a selfie taken with a
phone will probably work ok. If you are not happy using a phone camera, then most towns have at least one print shop where they can photograph you and give you a digital image on a memory stick or card. As you progress through the procedure you will be best served by having access to details of your previous passport, but it isn’t actually essential and the site does report back to a human in the UK who can check. When you post your photograph, you will be asked to give details (including email address) of a person of standing who can confirm that they know you and that the photograph is of you. The whole process can take up to six weeks from start to finish and this will include delivery via courier to your address in Spain and you have to pay with a debit or credit card for the cost of the passport (depends upon number of pages) and courier fee at the time of submitting the application online. You will be sent a special code which will allow you to track your passport through all of its stages. In the event that you have lost your passport and need a temporary replacement, that can also be done online. It is more expensive than a normal passport, is usually good for one round trip only and will normally be issued by the British Consulate in Malaga. For those without computers, it is still possible to apply through the post and there are even different shops with English-speaking staff scattered around Spain where for a fee they will help you complete the forms and send them off for you.

Visit to Manilva by British Ambassador to Spain THOSE on the panel included representatives and mayors of Manilva, Casares and San Roque as well as local experts on law, banking and trade as well as invited speaker, the new British Ambassador to Spain HE Hugh Elliott who travelled from Madrid. Prior to the meeting he kindly agreed to speak with Euro Weekly News, although due to the forthcoming General Election, he was required under the rule known as Purdah not to make any comment that could be construed as being of a political nature. The Ambassador had met and married his Spanish wife whilst working as a teacher in Madrid and eventually moved back to the UK with his family to take up a position in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Pleasingly for them both, his first overseas appointment was in Madrid and after spells in the UK he also worked for the FCO in both Argentina and Paris before taking a job in private commerce for seven years. He then applied for the role of Ambassador to Spain and was appointed, which for many reasons he is relishing and is looking forward to the future once all matters political are resolved.

As part of an ongoing programme to discuss the future for British passport holders following Brexit, a seminar was organised in Manilva on the Costa del Sol last week with a number of guest speakers. His current situation is to advise British passport holders to anticipate and be prepared for an eventual Brexit regardless of how long it takes or whether it is hard or soft. The important matters to resolve are those of residency, exchange of driving licences, resolution of health care so that those living in Spain can continue to enjoy their lives without facing bureaucratic problems once any Brexit period of grace has expired. Ambassador Elliott went to some length to praise the Spanish government for the way in which they have reacted to the entire Brexit saga and the fact that they have probably done more to ensure protection for the rights of British subjects than any other EU member state. Life expectancy LIFE expectancy in Spain is t h e h i g h e s t o f a n y E u ro p e a n Union member-state and the third highest in the world, beaten only by Japan and Switzerland. The Health, Consumer and Social Well-being Ministry report Life Expectancy in Spain 2017 reveals the Spanish live to an average age of 83.3 years old. Wo m e n c a n e x p e c t t o l i v e e v e n l o n g e r, u n t i l 8 6 . Av e r a g e l i f e e x pectancy for Spanish men is 80.4. A comparison with 2016’s figures shows the number of years men in Spain generally live remained unchanged, although for the population overall there was a 0.1 year decrease and a decline of 0.2 years for women. The report designed to show the population lifespan based on gender, age and region has been compiled annually since 2002. Life expectancy in Spain has increased by 3.5 years since then: 4.2 years for men and 2.8 for women. The explanation for why Spanish men historically do not live as long
as women is explained by males being at greater risk of heart conditions and having higher incidents of risk factors related to diet and smoking, according to the Health Ministry. Nevertheless, the gender life expectancy gap in this country has narrowed by 5.6 years since 1992. By region, Madrid has the highest life expectancy ((85.08), followed by Castilla y León (84.2), Navarra (84.13), La Rioja (84.01), the Basque Country (84), Cataluña (83.64), Cantabria (83.63), Aragon (83.52), Galicia (83.40), Castilla-La Mancha (83.20), the Balearic Islands (83.11) and the Canary Islands (83.04). At the other end of the scale, the autonomous community registering the lowest life expectancy in 2017 was Ceuta y Melilla (80.65), the second lowest Andalucia (82.08), followed by Extremadura (82.42), Murcia (82.61), the Valencian Community (82.81) and Asturias (82.84). In terms of the number of years Spaniards can expect with quality of life, in 2017 the average was 63.2 years: 63.9 for men and 62.5 for women.

Rebuilding the coast THE revamping of the Torrevieja coastline began on November 25 with an ambitious project of regeneration of the beach of Los Locos that will continue for a decade. The first delivery of 12,000 cubic metres of sand, originally planned for the beginning of 2020, was brought forward in view of the impact caused by the storm in September which left the central section of the beach with barely two metres of sand between the promenade and the sea, when a few years ago in the narrowest area there were around 15 metres. The objective is to widen this central section of the beach by 20 metres, which has been gradually receding in recent years. They will use sand extracted from a Murcia quarry which is clearly a larger and denser granulate, that should withstand the impact of new storms with more guarantees. In 2017 a study of the dynamics of sea currents in this urban beach area was carried out to determine which could be the best option when regenerating the coastal space, with a budget of more than €65,000.

Charity food drive THE Franciscan shelter for men in Gandia is holding its annual Christmas food drive in aid of the 70 men being cared for there. The shelter is urging the community to come together to help those less fortunate in the season of giving. All they ask is that members of the public pick up a few extra bits of non-perishable and unexpired food when buying their shopping and drop them off at their various drop off points. These are located in La Xara, Ondara, Benidoleig, Benissa, Javea, Denia, Teulada. Oliva and La Drova. Some examples of suitable donations would be pasta, rice, dried lentils, tinned tomatoes, tinned tuna, cleaning product and toiletries. Euro Weekly attended and was able to see first-hand the women’s amazing work. The fantastic €1,000 donation is funding brand new Knitted Knocker Kits that will be distributed among Spanish Cancer Associations across Andalucia. The thoughtful kits look to help women with breast cancer all over Spain. Maria Bailey, president of Knitted Knockers, has already launched them in Sevilla and will continue the expanse. The inspiring group met up at the Spanish Association Against Cancer centre in Fuengirola, where Vice-president Paloma welcomed us and highlighted the amazing services the centre provides for cancer patients across the province. She spoke fondly of Maria: “This project is amazing. We simply put Maria in contact with hospitals and the women who need her help.” Smiles all around, the women posed cheque in hand. The air was jubilant and Paloma and Maria broke into song. “Friends forever!” they sang. Maria said: “The beauty of our knockers is that they are made by women for other women. Safety drive MORE than 1,100 schoolchildren from Almuñecar and La Herradura spent last week learning the basic rules of road safety. The eight to 12-year-old pupils from San Miguel de ALmuñecar and Las Gaviotas de La Herradura Schools visited the Road Safety Education Caravan of Fundacion Mapfre for theoretical and practical workshops. According to organisers, the aim was ‘laying the foundations for safer, responsible and respectful citizens’ when it comes to road use and knowledge. The safety caravan was parked up at Aquatropic park in collaboration with the Local Police. A spokesperson said: “It is a fun way for schoolchildren to learn to avoid risk behaviours, anticipate accidents, recognise correct procedures and the meaning and importance of traffic signs and prevention rules.” A team of specialised monitors gave theoretical classes on basic concepts related to safety and prevention. Afterwards, practical sessions were held in a go-kart circuit where everything learned was applied.

Christmas crowning glory ALMERIA Council has revealed there will be a Christmas crowning glory at the end of what has been a magical year for the city. This year Almeria has been making the utmost of its status as national gastronomy capital, and the three 10-metre high crown installations made up of 155,000 lights, plus Christmassy music show, are seen as fitting Festive Season decorations. The giant crowns will stand on the Mirador de la Rambla from December 5 to January 6. City Promotion councillor Carlos Sanchez said the elaborate decorations were a way for the council to thank all the city’s residents for their commitment to the gastronomy 2019 initiative, commenting, “I am sure they will be enjoyed as much be adults as children.” The councillor also stressed the aim was to continue to promote the city as a foodie destination, and said that Christmas would mark the transition for the use of the new ‘Almeria, Gastronomy City’ logo from the beginning of 2020 onwards.
THE first of 28 new buses reaching 18-metres in length were deployed on the roads in Palma last week. A presentation was held on one of the new buses on Avenida Antoni Maura, where it was explained by EMT executives that the buses will be tested on two routes - numbers 3 and 15. They will later be tried out on lines 5, 7 and 8, so that drivers can get used to the different turning angles of the city. The 18-metre buses, built by Scania, are costing Palma Town Hall €11.2 million. These buses, plus shorter ones of 12- and 15-metres made by Iveco and Man, will be phased in so that they can all be in operation by spring of next year. The buses run on natural gas and use solar energy for interior equipment. They have control cameras, four doors, two screens as well as LED lighting.

AN overnight error with its comput er system has meant that thou sands of customers of the TSB Bank (which was taken over by Spain’s Banco Sabadell) have been left without funds. Salary payments, pensions and other transfers did not go into cus tomer accounts as they should, leaving many in a difficult financial situation, unable to pay bills which were falling due. The bank apolo gised and invited customers to keep a record of any financial losses that may have occurred so that compen sation could be paid.

A SPANISH judge has recommended to prosecutors that former Syrian Vice President Rifaat AlAssad, the ex iled uncle of Bashar Assad, and 13 others be put on trial charged with belonging to a criminal organisation and money laundering. He suggests that AlAssad and his eight sons along with others have sys tematically laundered money taken from Syria over a period of 40 years. This judge ordered the confiscation of 500 properties in 2018, many of which were in Marbella and Puerto Banus alongside a huge tract of land

Uber taxi EVER since private hire (VTC) company Uber arrived in Spain, it has been in conflict with taxi dri vers (who pay large amounts for their licences) and many city councils. Now in a breakthrough move, it has agreed that it will offer taxi and VTC services through its UberX platform on a trial basis with 50 taxis in Madrid. If this is successful then the company hope to recruit many of the 16,000 licensed taxi drivers in the city thanks to a change in lo cal law which allows set prices to be charged.

which has been dropping during 2019. Mortgages attached to the Euribor rate are still low when compared to many other countries, but the bank is determined to make more money from its current lending estimated at more than €50 billion.

Everything that comes out of his mouth leans clearly toward the extreme left ideologies of the Marxist dictators he appears to hold in such high esteem. The only ambition they have is to gain power at any price. To achieve these ends they are prepared to offer up any bribe they think will suck the public in. Free transport. Free dental care. Higher wages for less work. No education fees. Free child care. Pen sion reimbursements for women (not costed!) Increased benefits for all, etc
etc. Plus, to appeal to its envy riddled young leftie followers, the persecu tion of anyone who has been suc cessful in just about any form of capi talist enterprise whatsoever. A careful look at their Nationalisa tion plans alone should be enough to wave glaring red flags. Where in their party of misfits are they going to find all the expertise of experienced busi ness personal to replace those they intend to oust from these highly spe cialised managerial positions? Can you really imagine the likes of Diana Abbott running the board rooms of British Rail? Let me quickly add, that the rest of this shower in the race for power is none too im pressive either. But I would vote for any of them, including the Greens, if it helped keep this bunch of antise matic commies away from our chil dren’s future. For all their sakes we owe them at least that. Ah, it’s good to be back! MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man WOW that was an unpleasant couple of weeks. You may have noticed that my col umn has been missing. Unfortunately I wasn’t on holiday but was in hospital. All in all everything went very well. If I did have one grump it would be that it’s very frustrating that, as I have several ongoing problems, the doctors don’t listen to the patient. I am diabetic and one of the treatments they gave me had steroids in it which affects my diabetes which then went off the scale. They won’t let you administer your own insulin so I had to take what I was given which they decided would be less than I take at home. I pointed out they wouldn’t be able to control my normal levels with this dosage let alone the crazy elevated ones I had now. Just to give you an idea it’s normally 100 and was now hitting 400! Eventually, after me refusing to take anything with steroid in until they listened to me, the two doctors involved talked to each other
and we got it sorted. But it was a worrying few days. There has to be petrol station etiquette. Please tell me why people fill their car then go off to pay whilst you are sitting behind them waiting, along with all the others at other pumps, and your one decides to then do their weekly shopping. What! Firstly, why would you shop in a petrol station? Except for chocolate or maybe the wife’s last minute forgotten birthday or Christmas present. And secondly, if you do decide to do it, move your car first. You must realise how annoying it is to have to sit there watching all the cars that arrive after you, fill up and go whilst you are sitting there like a lemon. Then, after what seems to be a lifetime, they come strolling back to their car. I’m al ways so tempted to say something buy if Mrs S is with me I’m not allowed. Maybe the petrol stations should have a sign up, but then I guess they don’t care as long as people are spending money. Or give me a job controlling petrol sta tion traffic along with the other job I’d like at Carrefour moving all the cars out of the disabled bays that don’t have blue badges! Ah, it’s good to be back!

PROTECTED PRINCE THIS Prince Andrew business is an absolute disgrace. And we can all be sure this will be dusted nicely under the carpet. At least we can thank our lucky stars he has been sacked from his cushy day job. To think he was earning half a mil lion pounds of hardearned tax payers money. We were inadver tently funding the comings and goings of a man who was either involved in or knew about some disgusting actions. Now the FBI want to interview him under oath and the UK will no doubt be protecting him. Why should we? He is part of the royal family but he has certainly not served his country well. Of course, in a few months, the topic won’t even be open for discus sion. Someone will have cleverly pushed it all aside and we will be enraged with some new thing. People like him need to come down from their protected palaces and finally face the conse quences. David Miller
Weekly to express my admiration for the Spanish Health System. I have seen your articles about the issues they are having and how they don’t have enough staff. To me this just makes it even more admirable. I think it’s time to actually give them the praise they deserve. Since I came to Spain, I’ve had different health problems and the doctors have al ways been fantastic. You get the occasional person who is rude, but that is just part of life! I recently went to my local health centre and got the winter flu shot like I do every year. When I think I’m not even originally from this country and I still get exceptional service, it just shows how good the European system is. Let’s give these people the praise they deserve. Joining together ON Monday November 25, millions of people around the globe came together to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The day raises awareness for women subjected to rape, domestic violence and other forms of violence. The date was set in honour of the 1960 assassinations of the three Mirabal sisters in the Dominican Republic. Dictator Rafael Trujillo ordered the killings of the political activists after they opposed his rule, thus turning the sisters into symbols of feminine resistance. The United Nations and the European Commission encourage governments and organisations to celebrate activities in support of the movement. In Spain, a law was unanimously approved in 2004 to fight against the murders of women by their partners or ex-partners. Consensus was reached again in 2017 with a State Pact against Gender Violence. Since 2003, 1,027 women have been murdered by their partners, with 52 murders so far in 2019. This year, general agreement has been broken by Vox, now part of eight autonomous governments and 365 town halls. The far-right party has blocked the approval of conviction statements. Vox argues that ‘violence has no gender’ and refuses to adopt the term ‘domestic violence.’ The secretary of State for Equality, Soledad Murillo, considers their actions “a serious lack of responsibility and respect towards the victims of gender violence.”

Admiration DEAR Letters, I read your article ‘Pregnant Australian Firefighter is doing it for the Community,’ Novem ber 13. This reported that Kat RobinsonWilliams is doing dangerous firefighting even though she is expecting a baby. I hope that she will take care of herself and her baby because as well as the danger of the bushfires, firefighting foams have been found to con tain harmful cancercausing chemicals. Is it time to give all UK cops a gun? The penalties/punishment needs to be far more severe. Too much of this sort of crime gets away with a slap on the wrist. Also I think if parents were to be fined for their ‘little dar lings’ appalling behaviour it might act as some sort of deterrent. Sharon Wenham

I shop there for a few things we miss but also if things are cheaper than our local English shops and in some cases cheaper than Con sum. Then where do you think we will shop? Do you trust Uber drivers? I’ve used Uber often in and around San Pedro this last month as had problems with my car. Never had to wait more than five to 10 minutes for pick up. Quality cars, better than local taxis. Cheaper and more convenient, especially being able to se lect pick up and drop off points. Nothing to dislike at all! Don’t have trust issues. The research also demonstrated that coex posure to CBs and alcohol increased the likelihood of birth defects involving the face and brain. The study, funded by the National In stitute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), part of the National Insti tutes of Health, was pub lished in Scientific Reports. “Prenatal alcohol expo sure is a leading pre ventable cause of birth de fects and neurodevelopmental ab normalities in the United States,” said NIAAA Direc t o r , G e o r g e F Ko o b , P h D. “Since marihuana and alco hol are frequently used si multaneously, the com bined effects of cannabinoids and alcohol

variety of CBs alone and in combination with alcohol in varying amounts to mice on day eight of pregnancy, which is similar to the third and fourth weeks of preg nancy in humans. The CBD amounts admin istered were within what is considered a therapeutic range for several medical conditions in humans. The THC concentration adminis tered was similar to levels reached by a person smok ing marihuana. The researchers found that onetime exposure to CBD and THC caused eye, brain, and facial malforma tions similar to those caused by prenatal alcohol exposure alone. The researchers also found that when mice were given both CBs and alcohol, the likelihood of these birth defects more than doubled.

“ONE in seven guests spent more than £400 to attend a wedding with the high est cost coming in at £1,000.” A recent study found that one in three millennials would fall into debt this year: a quarter of those surveyed said they’d missed paying bills or rent after splashing too much cash on clothes, gifts, accommo dation and hen/stag parties. One in 10 said they’d been forced to sell possessions to meet the costs, while one in seven was forced to move back in with their parents. The war and postwar generations look on with incredulity, but should we? We’re all a product of our environment and the times in which our values were formed and developed. Wartime kids grew up with next to nothing, while postwar baby boomers had their values significantly im pacted by their wartime parents. But millenials have grown up in a very different world. As a generation they’ve been presented with everything they wanted (iPhones, iPads, PlayStations... you

Little wonder they have no ap preciation of the value of money they’ve had it all handed to them on a plate thanks to their parents’ generation. best it can be, but surely that should be for the benefit of those attending? Faro and its hidden Algarve gems THE capital of the southern Algarve region is usually used merely as a city to pass through. But Faro, with its cobbled archways and Moorish architecture, is a distinctly Portugese coastal city with plenty on offer. Ideal as a stop off spot, the underrated Algarve resort is less than four and a half hours from Malaga by car and is one of the most southerly points in Portugal. The monumental Arco da Vila archway belies the city’s Moorish influences along with the original Moorish wall, of course. The white lighthouse, though, is probably the city’s most recog nisable landmark. Other parts of the city are undoubtedly less attractive on the eye. But when you are partying with the near 10,000 strong stu dent population on one of many lively nights out, you probably will not mind. During the days, the historic old town is packed with outdoor cafes and wellmaintained squares, while sophisti cated tourists may appreciate the theatre offerings. The Ria Formosa Natural Park is nearby, boasting lagoons and mudflats. Attractive parks, intriguing museums, chapels and a 13th centu ry cathedral make for an engaging stroll, but really it is all about sand, sun and sea. Situated on the North Atlantic coast, Faro has an impressive marina and a number of attractive beaches in touching distance. For those who need a little more stimulation, a number of un developed nearby islands make for hidden gems and are almost undoubtedly the best daytripping options around. Elsewhere, a 16th century convent has been turned into a mu seum featuring medieval and prehistoric artefacts, alongside reli gious art.

BARRY DUKE REMEMBER Chuck Berry’s sugges tive single, ‘My DingALing?’ The BBC aired the song when it was re leased in 1972, and as a conse quence it did pretty well on the charts. But sales really took off when Mary Whitehouse, selfappointed morality campaigner, picked a very public fight with the corporation, and demanded that it be banned. In a letter to the then BBC Director General, Charles Curran, the ghastly Christian busybody fumed: ‘One teacher told us of how she found a class of small boys with their trousers undone, singing the song... We trust you will agree with us that it is no part of the function of the BBC to be the vehicle of songs which stimulate this kind of behaviour...’ Curran effectively told Whitehouse to take a running jump at a rolling doughnut, and gleefully pointed out that her crusade against ‘My DingA Ling’ boosted its popularity. He wrote: ‘We decided that it could be broadcast… We did not think it would disturb or emotionally agitate its listeners and we believe

‘blasphemy’ were being under mined by, among others, ‘the hu manist gay lobby.’ No such a lobby ever existed. It was purely a figment of her paranoid imagination, but it inspired a band of humanists and atheists ‘ myself in cluded ‘ to launch just such a move ment, and on one momentous day in
1979 we met up to form the Gay Hu manist Group, later to become the Gay and Lesbian Humanist Associa tion (GALHA). I, together with my late partner Brian Parry, formed a small publish ing company called ParryDuke Enter prises to take care of the group’s communications requirements. We
published a regular newsletter, and in 1981 created a festive ‘Mary and Child’ greetings card, which proved surprisingly popular. I was reminded of the work we did with the group now called LGBT Hu manist when, a few weeks back, I received an invitation to a lunch in London to celebrate the 40th an niversary of the group that Brian and I helped form. The invitation from LGBT Human ists for the November 24 event con tained a message from Andrew Cop son, Chief Executive of Humanists UK that said: “As well as fighting hard hitting campaigns to combat religious bigotry and homophobia, the Gay Humanist Group led the way in pro viding humanist weddings to same sex couples even in its early years. “Battles we have fought for decades are not yet won, and we cannot take our victories including ending Section 28, decriminalising gay sex and samesex marriage for granted. In the current climate, we must be vigilant to make sure progress for which we have fought so hard is not undone, or reversed.” Nothing would have pleased me more than to join the celebrants, but sadly a full diary made the trip to the UK impossible. Unless I’m called to Glory Everlast ing in the interim, I’ll definitely attend the 50th anniversary.

A classic on steroids MINI has launched the new John Cooper Works GP
at this year’s Los Angeles Motor Show.
The fastest roadlegal vehi cle the brand has ever built,
with a 302bhp engine, func tional aerodynamics and a tauter chassis. Global produc tion for the JCW GP is limited to just 3,000 units, 575 of which will come to the UK priced from £33,895 each. The Mini GP features flam boyant styling with a striking spoiler and wheel arch exten sions designed to aid aerody namics and cover the wider 18inch wheels. All 3,000 cars will share the same paint fin ish. The body is in Racing Grey, the roof in Melting Sil ver and the underside of the rear wing, lower air intake and grille trim feature Chilli Red paint. Most of the standard car’s chrome trim components, in cluding the Mini badges, have been swapped for gloss black replacements. The GP also features a pair of darkened headlamps and the latest Mi ni’s trademark Union Flag tail lights. Inside, there are two sports seats but the rear bench has been ditched com pletely to re duce weight. The dash in cludes 3D printed trim, again featuring the
car’s production number, and the paddleshifters are also 3Dprinted in metal. The Mini is powered by a reworked version of the tur bocharged 2.0litre fourcylin der engine found in the re cent Mini Clubman JCW. Modifications include a rein forced crankshaft, stronger pistons and conrods, a freer flowing exhaust system, a larger turbocharger and a new intercooler. The engine develops 302bhp and 450Nm of torque, which is fed to the front wheels via an eight speed automatic gearbox and a mechanical limitedslip dif ferential. The GP has a claimed 0–62mph time of 5.2 seconds and a top speed of 164mph.

Chassis upgrades include larger fourpiston brakes for the front axle, a reconfigured power steering system, stiffer suspension mounting bushes, additional chassis bracing and a set of uprated passive dampers and springs, which lower the car’s ride height by 10mm compared to the stan dard John Cooper Works GP. Mini also says the GP’s brutish body kit provides im proved aerodynamic perfor mance and cooling benefits. Classic Car Club of Andalucía
Big Cats Growl again in November! E
ARLIER this month saw the CCCA hold its classic car run and lunch and, last weekend, was the turn of the Big Cats, the JEC ( Jaguar Enthusiasts Club) to take to the roads of Andalucia and enjoy their monthly run and lunch. Organisers, Philip and Jenny Wray, had planned a super route starting with a breakfast at Venta Jose Carlos which is situated on the Almogia road just off the top end of the Malaga by-pass. The Venta was busy with Jaguar enthusiasts from 10.00am as coffee and bacon was consumed and participants had time to greet each other and mill around each-other’s cars. Not every car would be a Jaguar, as the Club is for Jaguar enthusiasts who may not always have a ‘Big Cat’ available. John and Marion Richardson brought along a very pretty, bright red Pontiac Firebird whilst Angela Veglio had her glorious black V8 Audi R8 which was much admired by all. Ian Ashworth and Claudia Langer brought along Ian’s very pretty black Lexus SC430 which is a very swish, luxurious way of getting around the countryside. However, Jaguars made up most of the numbers and it was good to see so many different models out and about enjoying the countryside and, more important, the driving! The XK8 seems to be a very popular enthusiasts’ choice nowadays, they are beautiful, wellappointed and powerful cars that are reliable, well-built and relatively easily available without stretching budgets. They are also very comfortable to travel in and have cavernous luggage space! That reflects in both JEC and CCCA clubs here in Spain as there are usually a number of both convertible and fixed head versions out on these events. Philip and Jenny Wray have a very pretty, black, convertible XK8 and there were many others presented at the start along with a brace of F-Types in both convertible and fixed head form. Older XJ variants were plentiful, taking their occupants around the countryside with the usual ‘Grace, pace and space’ as the Jaguar adverts always proclaimed! Later XKR Jaguars, the new shape, supercharged variants are also popular and not expensive to buy and run. Two or three were out including a red convertible in the hands of Jack Weiss and another black convertible run by Andre and Jose Vieleers. After an 11.00am briefing by top JEC man, Philip Wray, the route set off north, by-passing the lakes and heading through Almogia. A stunning and very enjoyable piece of road but need-

ing great care with many cyclists descending the hill at speed and using rather a lot of both sides of the road… From Almogia, the route headed still further north where, when reaching the village of Pastelero, turned off west to head over the mountain just below the Torcal, south of Antequera. Here was found some rarely used roads that gave staggering views out over the Torcal which were enjoyed before the route came through La Joya, joining the main Torcal loop before turning south through Vale de Abdalajis and on through Alora. A coffee stop was most welcome at ‘The Barrels Bar’ or, to give it its correct title, Bar La Herradura, in Zalea and another opportunity for a chat and a look at the cars before heading off again across the new road by Vilafranco del Guadalhorce, by-passing Coin, to head towards Mijas and a very welcome stop for a glass of cava at Barranco Blanco in the woods there. From here, participants headed towards Mijas, turning off to go down the A-7053 and skirt Entrerrios before coming into La Cala de Mijas and finishing for lunch at Restaurante Ole just outside the village near La Cortijera. After a much-needed ‘Copa de Bienvenida’ the lunch menu started with cold Iberian meats and Manchego cheese, fried prawns, clams in a butter sauce and home-made croquetas. Main course had a choice of fillet of pork, entrecôte steaks or a loin of cod baked in butter. The meats came with a choice of sauce and the pudding was a marvelous, blackcurrant cheesecake. A generous allowance of pink, white or red
wines was provided and most all agreed that this, for €30, was good value indeed. December Events The CCCA will be busy in December. On the 3rd, next Tuesday, the Club will have its annual Christmas Party at Treetops Restaurante in El Chaparral. This will be a ‘Black tie and Posh Frocks’ affair, there will be canapés and cava served on arrival and the Club will be entertained for dining and dancing by the fabulous Karen Cooper. This is a members only evening, but members’ guests will be most welcome. The CCCA will also run its annual Christmas classic car run and lunch on Saturday, December 7. The start venue has yet to be decided, but the finish will be at Restaurante Valparaiso, near Mijas, where prizes will be presented for the best Christmasdressed crew and the best dressed car too! This is always a really fun day with most members getting in to the Christmas Spirit. There is a plan to have a special ‘Boxing Day’ run too, but we’ll have more information on that in our next issue.

Villa trump the Toon Army NEWCASTLE got the game started at Villa Park, and SaintMaximin’s early cross bounced harmlessly through to Heaton. The game saw a lively start, Newcastle tried to play the ball out of defence, but the home team didn’t give them any time or space, and after trying on the left, trying through Dubravka and trying on the right, they eventually gave it away, and Douglas Luiz had a shot that deflected wide. On the 13 minute mark, Villa had their first real chance. From a throwin they attacked. Grealish dummied gave Targett space on the left to consider his options, and he fired in a delicious low cross that El Ghazi looked destined to turn in, but it did n’t quite turn in. Thirtytwo minutes and we saw the first goal which went to the home side. Hourihane tapped a free kick to Greal ish, who teed him up. An ex tra couple of feet allowed

of the area tactic was just a few extra hundreds and thousands of idiocy atop an already silly cake. Villa deservedly lead at halftime. There had not been very many actual goalscoring chances other than the actual goals, but it’s
been a half of two halves. In the first, Newcastle lacked ambition. In the second, they lacked quality. Second half Newcastle threw on big Andy Carroll and changed tactics lumping the ball up to the big Geordie forward but it was to no avail, both sides had chances in the second half, but in all honesty with their 20 lead Villa never looked like losing this and saw the game out with a scoreless second half. A more than decent game for the neutral, even if both of the goals came from set pieces and there weren’t a lot of clear opportunities from open play. Villa have an excellent mid field and it’s a pleasure to see the ball go through them; Newcastle have SaintMax imin, who’s fun in his way and could at any moment start to actually contribute to actual goals, and a defence shoddy enough to make something interesting likely at some point.
Spain wins Davis Cup AN outstanding and emotional performance by the Spanish saw them take the title on Sunday. Rafael Nadal was of course Spain’s stand out player producing eight wins out of the eight matches in the new Davis Cup format which has featured 18 teams playing in a weeklong event in the Spanish capital, with a roundrobin group stage followed by knock out rounds. Under the old system, teams played home and away ties through the year. It was however Roberto Bautista Agut’s presence, and victory, that was aweinspiring. Just three days after the death of his father Joaquim, Roberto Bautista returned to the court to beat Felix Auger Aliassime 76(3), 63 to put Spain one rubber away from a sixth Davis Cup title. It was an incredible final where he played with poise and fortitude. The 31yearold, whose mother died last year, put aside grief to deliver for Spain, and pointed to the sky after claiming victory when AugerAliassime went wide on the first of three match points. In an interview with Eurosport Bautista said that it was a “very special feeling on the court” and that he has gone out to try his best. His best delivered that first point for Spain. Then it was Rafael Nadal’s turn. Nadal had not lost a Davis Cup singles match since 2004

and it was always going to be a tough task for Shapovalov to send the tie to a deciding dou bles rubber. The first set was dominated by the Spanish lefthander. But the young Canadian showed grit and got himself back into the match to force a secondset tiebreak and even saved two match points with blistering backtoback winners, managing to score a set point of his own, but the 20yearold finally bowed out when he netted a forehand. Nadal dropped to the ground before being mobbed by his teammates. When he finally got to his feet, he held aloft Bautista Agut in a tight embrace as the crowds cheered on. Spain has won the Davis Cup six times (2000, 2004, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2019), and fin ished as runnerup four times (1965, 1967, 2003, 2012), which makes it historically one of the most powerful countries in the tennis world.

Tottenham Win After Sensational Comeback In Champions OLYMPIAKOS kicked off at White Hart Lane, their players wearing blue shirts, blue shorts with white trim and blue socks. Tottenham wore white shirts, shorts and socks for this Champions League battle. There appeared to be a huge contin gent of Olympiakos fans in the house, and they were making their presence felt from their place in one corner of the stadium. On the field, their team was dominating possession in these very ear ly stages. Olympiakos had the first shot in anger, when Giorgos Masouras picked up a crossfield pass to the left, cutting inside and unleashing a shot from the edge of the penalty area, but it did not trouble the goalkeeper. The visitors went ahead on 10 min utes, Olympiakos took the lead courtesy of a dipping drive from Youssef El Arabi from the edge of the penalty area into the bottom lefthand corner. Standing behind the defender, Dele Alli was in the right place at the right time and tapped in a couple of yards out. Ten minutes into the second half Tot tenham equalised. Spurs took a throw in and Lucas Moura ran into space down the right flank after a quickwitted ball boy ensured the ball went back into play as quickly as possible. He sent in a cross for Harry Kane, who made no mistake. Tottenham took the lead on 73 min utes when Serge Aurier scored with a wonderful strike on the halfvolley from one corner of the sixyard box after ex cellent work by Dele Alli. Just four minutes later Spurs won a freekick wide on the left for a Podence foul on Dele Alli that left the Spurs man in pain. Christian Eriksen sent in a cross and it was a beauty. Kane headed home to become the quickest player in history to score 20 Champions League goals with Tottenham being 42 winners.
Mission Accomplished For Manchester City PEP GUARDIOLA insisted it was mis sion accomplished as Manchester City booked their place in the Champions League last 16 for a seventh successive season despite a lacklustre 11 draw against Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday. Guardiola’s side were well below their best at the Etihad Stadium, but Ilkay Gundogan’s second half strike put them on course to wrap up first place in Group C with one game to spare. Although Manor Solomon equalised for Shakhtar, Atalanta’s win over Di namo Zagreb ensured City can’t be knocked off top spot. “We have qualified. We played so good in second half. The group stage is always tricky but the target was to qualify and we have done it,” Guardiola said. “Now we have one competition al ready done we play the last game qualified as first in the group so we can focus on the Premier League until we arrive in the cups.” With the group clinched, Guardiola has the bonus of being able to rest
players for the trip to Zagreb on De cember 11. That is especially important as the Zagreb fixture comes between vital Premier League matches against Man chester United and Arsenal. While City won’t give up their Pre mier League title without a fight, Liver pool are in such a strong position that Europe could provide Guardiola’s best hope of a major prize this term. Guardiola won the Champions League twice as Barcelona boss but the last of those triumphs came in 2011. He hasn’t gone past the quarterfinals with City.
