The agreement promised that no salary would fall below €1,000 in 2020 for the early education level, but this hasn’t been ful-

According to the Workers’ Union (CCOO), it is ‘outrageous, shameful and a sign of absolute disrespect.’ The union also expressed their distaste that the Improvement of Educational Quality (Lomce) does not consider teaching children under three years old as an educational stage ‘but merely as assistance in the sector.’ They also denounced the lack of regulation in education centres from the Ministry which discounts the requirements of spaces, training and the ratio of
teachers-to-children in each class. The union has questioned how the government can offer childcare ‘without having to meet these fundamental conditions.’ In February, the same group initiated protests
against the new collective agreement, which concluded in a national strike and which closed many ‘escoletas’ in Mallorca. The union point to the same action if early childhood education does not become a political priority.

CHANGING GEARS THE Consell de Mallorca has announced that it will allocate €6.8 million to extend the network of cycle lanes across the island. The Consell has assured that the new network, which will cover a total area of 11.8km, will minimise its environmental impact. The department also revealed it will install new safety barriers on roads, as well as radars to alert drivers of cyclists, with further improvements being made to light and tunnel signalling.

Contaminated water
INVESTIGATION: Guardia Civil’s Seprona unit conducted inspections at five wells near s’Albufera. THE Guardia Civil has charged eight people and three companies for contaminating the s’Albufera Natural Park with sewage. An investigation was launched by the Seprona division after a resident reported a bad smell at his farm which was located near to the Sa Pobla treatment plant. An area of Es Vinyet was then inspected, where officers discovered built up sludge giving off a strong smell of faecal. The liquid was analysed at the Water Resources Laboratory where it concluded that the wastewater was untreated and heavily contaminated. An operator on duty at the time at the Sa Pobla treatment plant was questioned, admitting that the facilities “were not prepared for the volume of wa-
ter entering inside it.” The Guardia Civil then contacted several former employees of the purification plant, who told officers that discharges were a daily occurrence and that those responsible were fully aware of the problem. Officers then analysed five wells in the area, finding that the waters were not suitable for human consumption nor for the irrigation of gardens, being contaminated with faecal matter and E coli. The Guardia Civil has subsequently charged three managers of the treatment plant, two from Abaqua, the Balearic Agency for Water and Environmental Quality and another from Socamex, a water management company, in addition to two consultants who work for Sa Pobla City Council.
ES TRENC: Tourism will be regulated in the natural park of over 3,780 hectares.
Salvation for Es Trenc THE Balearic government has announced that it will regulate tourism use in the Natural P a r k o f E s Tr e n c Salobrar de Campos. Beginning the preparation for the Natural Resources Management Plan (PORN), the government s e e k to ma ke the a re a ’s public us e c ompa tible with the preservation of the protected site. Initiatives that will be included in the PORN will be the re gula tion of tourists, the distribution
of car parks away from the beaches, management of m ar i t i m e t r aff i c, t he limitation of sun loungers, umbrellas and beach bars, as well as measures for posidonia, hunting activity and illegal salt collection. Miquel Mir, Minister of t he Envi r onm ent , explained that the new plan will limit human pressure in terms of the maximum number of people who can access the Es Trenc and Ses Covetes coastal area, since it is the ‘most sensitive zone in the park.’ Mir stressed that Es
Trenc-Salobrar de Campos is one of the richest natural areas in Mallorca and one of the most embl em at i c spaces i n t he Balearic Islands, and for this reason measures must be taken to ensure its protection. As well as coastal rafts such as Sa Mareta de Sa Ràpi t a, t he ar ea i s hom e t o 96 speci es of birds and its waters house extensive meadows of oceanic posidonia. The plan is expected to be approved by the end of next year, although Mir admitted that it will be a complicated process.
Reviving Portocolom PORTS DE LES ILLES BALEARS (Ports IB) have announced their plans to restore the Portocolom fisherman barracks in Felanitx. The government entity plans to invest between €7 and €8 million for the restoration, which forms part of a larger project for the coastal area. Built in the 19th century, the barracks serve as an essential element of the port, storing tools in the summer and sheltering small boats during the winter. In a joint project with the Patrimoni department of the Consell de Mallorca, the restora-
tion will strengthen the structure of the barracks, both inside and out, whilst keeping the traditional characteristics of a fisherman’s house. At the end of July 2018, Ports IB assumed ownership of the barracks, with the vast majority of the property being managed by the Portocolom Nautical Club. No date has been confirmed for the start of the work, however the restoration will be executed within the current legislature. Meanwhile, Ports IB must decide what it will do with the barracks once they have been restored.

It’s hardly surprising this incredibly striking island of San de Gaztelugatxe was selected as a filming location for Game of Thrones.

LOCATED along the Bay of Biscay, 35km east from Bilbao, the island fortress - literally translated as castle rock (from Basque ‘gaztelu’ = castle + ‘aitz’ = rock) - was known as Dragonstone in season 7 of the BHO series. The island is connected to the mainland by a man-made stone bridge which leads into a narrow path of 241 steps which weaves its way to the top where there is a church with a bell along the front of its façade. According to legend, anybody who
climbs to the top should ring the bell three times and make a wish. The church at the top is dedicated to John the Baptist, who is said to have set foot on the island. However, the small church is not original and has been rebuilt several times over the centuries, having burned down. The first hermitage is believed to have been built here in the ninth century. Having become a convent before being abandoned by the friars in the 14th century, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe had a strategic purpose as a de-
fensive outpost for the lords of Biscay. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe also played a small role during the Spanish Inquisition. Witches and their ritualistic meetings known as Akelarre in Basque make up a part of the Basque mythology. The church deteriorated over time and it was eventually demolished in 1886 and rebuilt from scratch. Unfortunately, during the demolition process, all of the artifacts found in the ground, such as coins and cannon balls, were thrown into the sea.

THE popular TaPalma festival will commence on Wednesday, November 27, luring locals and visitors to restaurants and bars in the capital. PALMA City Council has ordered the eviction of several shops located in the underground shopping centre of Plaza Mayor. The council has initiated the process against four owners of the municipal premises after their lease came to an end in September. Pimeco, the association of small and medium sized businesses, has criticised the decision, asking that the council retracts its ruling which has acted ‘with little sensitivity towards small merchants in the area.’ The Eroski supermarket is included in the eviction proceedings, which will result in the loss of around 20 jobs. In response to the judgement, Toni Fuster, the President of Pimeco, has asked that the supermarket remains open until there is an alternative option, as “it provides a basic service to the community and residents do not have any other shop of this type in the surrounding area.”

THE rate for rubbish collection will increase by 15 per cent in the capital next year. The Board of Directors at Emaya, the public services company whose function is to manage water supply, collection of waste and street cleaning, made the announcement after a meeting to discuss budgetary forecasts for 2020. They justified the modification of the rate so that the municipal company can increase their revenue by approximately €4 million. At present, Emaya allocates €23 million for waste collection, although the actual cost of the service is reported to be €29 million. The rate for rubbish collection has not changed since 2013, although the service has been heavily criticised over the past few years for its poor operation. At the next board meeting, which is expected to be held in December, the rate distribution among different categories will be approved. Through this, a price will be established for homes and offices, one for shops, and another for bars and restaurants, which will also vary depending on if they serve food or not. Palma City Council has also revealed that it will contribute €7.5 million to Emaya to balance their

Sa Coma robberies A MAN has been arrested for allegedly committing three robberies with violence and intimidation at shops in Sa Coma de Sant Llorenç. As reported by the Guardia Civil, the investigation began in September after a robbery on a pharmacy in Sa Coma. Wielding a large knife, the
thief wore a motorcycle helmet to hide his identity, taking over €200 from the till. In October, the same man broke into a car rental company dressed in a protective helmet and sunglasses, threating employees with violence. The assailant fled without taking anything, but
a day later, he struck a supermarket brandishing a knife. A saleswoman managed to go outside to ask for help but the man fled. The investigation focused on a 58-year-old man who was known to local authorities and who had a lengthy criminal history.

ARRESTED: A man has been charged with rape.
A 29-YEAR OLD man has been arrested for the alleged rape of his 12-year-old niece in Campos. The incident came to light on November 14, after the man and young girl were left alone at the family home. The victim’s sister
returned to the house by surprise, finding her uncle having sex with the young girl. It was then that he panicked, fleeing the scene before her parent’s returned home. The girl’s parents immediately informed the Guardia Civil, taking their daughter to Manacor hospital where she underwent a gynaecological examination. Doctors confirmed that there were signs of sexual abuse. Officers then began looking for the man but were unable to locate him. However, on Friday morning, the man surrendered to the Guardia Civil in Palma where he was arrested and charged with the rape and sexual abuse of a minor.

PALMA National Police has charged 40 people this year for allegedly lying that they have been the victim of a crime. Officers reveal that in all of the cases they are people who have reported robberies with violence that never occurred, and generally their motivation is to defraud an insurance company for the loss of a high-end mobile phone. Officers believe that the people who commit this type of deception are mainly
Unlawful licences ANDRATX Council has been ordered to pay €15 million to the owners of the illegal Monport complex. The High Court of Justice in the Balearic Islands (TSJB) holds the municipal administration responsible for granting licences to build eight unlawful buildings that housed 68 homes on a protected area. This means that the council will have to compensate the owners of some of the homes which have remained half-built for over 12 years and are still pending demolition. The council gave Prosmi, the developer, a licence to start the work in 2004 which was later subject to a criminal investigation. The licence was declared void since the land had been protected since 1991. Prosmi then filed a complaint with the council to claim for the damages suffered, which was refused and so subsequently went to court. A ruling by the TSJB favoured Promsi, stating that the developers ‘are faced with the problem of unfinished homes which are uninhabitable and unusable for those who have purchased them.’ They added that the developer ‘has invested significant amounts of money in the real estate development, confident in the legality of the licences’ and that no profit has been made.

while in 2018 there were 31 cases of this type. When making a report at the Complaints Office, citizens are warned that pretending to be a victim of a crimi-
nal offence is in turn a crime which can be punishable by up to three years in jail. Discovering these imposters is a priority for the police, since every hour spent
on investigating false cases is an hour not dedicated to legitimate victims of violent robberies. For this reason, the National Police has appointed spe-
cialists to examine these types of events through the VeriPol computer application, which detects false allegations and has an accuracy of 90 per cent.

Firefighter shortage A SHORTAGE of firefighters and an ageing workforce in Palma has resulted in the town hall paying thousands of euros in overtime. In the last three months, the cost has reached over
€700,000, but the issue has caused tensions between the fire service and town hall for several years. In August, an average of 176 overtime hours per day were taken at the Palma Fire Department, which totalled to 5,456 hours by the end of the month. In September, 4,410 extra hours were worked and another 2,914 in October. During the 1980s, an ideal
ratio of one firefighter per 1,000 residents was established at a European level and adopted by the Regional Government’s Emergencies Directorate. However, the ratio in Palma is far below the European ideal with the city requiring 260 more firefighters. The shortage is attributed to the lack of new recruits and the age of some members
of the fire service which has meant that they have been allocated to secondary rather than frontline activities. In response, 12 people from Palma Activa are helping at the Fire Department workshop to carry out maintenance work on five vehicles for three weeks. Man dies in car accident A MAN has died in a traffic accident on the MA-3431 road that connects Muro with Can Picafort. The incident occurred late on Saturday night (November 16), when a driver lost control of a Peugeot 3008, which rolled over several times before crashing into trees near one of the highway’s roundabouts. No other vehicles were reported to be involved. Several units of the Guardia Civil Traffic Group and emergency personnel from SAMU-061 rushed to the scene, finding the man, who was declared dead on arrival, trapped inside the vehicle.
The fire brigade from Alcudia were then called, spending several hours cutting the body out of the car. The MA-3431 road was closed for two hours as a result of the accident. Official information from the Guardia Civil has revealed that the cause of the accident was due to ‘inappropriate speed for the route and adverse weather conditions.’ The body has been transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine in Palma, where a post-mortem will be performed. The man has been identified as 47year-old Antonio Ferriol Arrom, a resident of Inca.

A MAN has been arrested for an alleged hit and run accident that took place in Palma this month. Police report that the 49-year-old victim was injured and disoriented when he was found wandering around the Son Banya neighbourhood on November 3, but that he couldn’t remember what had happened to him. He was subsequently taken to Son Llàtzer hospital where doctors determined that he had several fractures and he also had to undergo an operation to remove his spleen. An investigation was launched with officers tracking down a car with a huge dent in it. When the owner was questioned he admitted that he ran over the victim and fled the scene because he was scared of the repercussions.
Tyson assault A WOMAN has been arrested for allegedly biting her ex-partner after an argument in Palma. The incident occurred on November 14, when a 28-year-old woman went to her ex-boyfriend’s home in the s’Indioteria neighbourhood with her friends to talk about their living arrangement. The 30-year-old man told the woman that she could enter, but forbade her friends from coming inside. A heated discussion then pursued, with the woman launching herself at the man, hitting and punching him, then biting him on his ear and cheek. The man filed a complaint with the National Police, where the woman was subsequently arrested.

PRIVATE INITIATIVE: The new electric power station boasts 1050kw charge points.
A Zero-emissions first THE first electric power station in the Balearic Islands has been inaugurated at the Son Castello industrial estate in the capital. This is the first private initiative from the Industrial Association of Mallorca (ASIMA) which adds to the 48 current public charging points on the island. The new power station boasts 10 50kw charge points and has been built on Gran Vía Asima, described by Francisco Martorell, President of ASIMA, as “the best location because it brings together the biggest car com-
panies on the island.” The opening ceremony was attended by Juan Pedro Yllanes, Minister of Energy Transition and José Hila, the mayor of Palma, where it was explained that the new power station will curb climate change and promote the electric car within the automobile sector. In a statement to the press, Yllanes announced that “the government is committed to the project and that it will provide €6 million to place charging points across the Balearic Islands.” He added that the goal is to have 1,000
points by 2025, where “the climatic emergency, the law and health demand this type of service.” Enrique Bañuelos de Castro, President of the QEV Group, said that by February more charging points will be installed across the island including one at the Ocimax cinema in Palma, with others placed in Inca and Magaluf. Charging points will also be rolled out in Menorca and Ibiza, where in Formentera their intention is ‘for the island to be the first in the Mediterranean to have zero emissions.’

Despite their autonomous operations management, every regional service is fully incorporated into a unique and common Public National Health System, supplying a cohesive blood transfusion care to all citizens, residents, and visitors in Spain based on 100 per cent voluntary and non-remunerated blood donation. Anyone who has lived continuously in the UK between 1980 and 1996 (a minimum of one year) will not be able to donate blood in Spain due to the risk of transmitting mad cow disease. Similarly, there are restrictions if you have received a blood transfer in the UK. However, each region may have different rules about donation. Call the donation helpline on 935 573 500. If you are eligible, you can give blood at your local hospital, or via the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja) at one of their clinics, or in one of their mobile units. You can check dates and locations by visiting www.donarsangre.org. A donor card is not necessary to give blood. On the first visit you will have to provide DNI, NIE, passport or a driving licence. If you are already registered in the Blood Bank, you only need a donor card or a document with your name and surname. The process of blood donation takes just 10 minutes in which 450 ml are collected (equating to 10 per cent of the total blood circulation of an adult person). Despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain blood is through the generosity of the public. The blood is carefully screened for disease to make sure it is safe. After a tattoo, you must wait four months to be eligible to donate. After surgery, the exclusion period will depend on the type of intervention. After minor surgical procedures, you cannot donate blood for seven days or until you are fully recovered. After undergoing major surgery, you will not be able to donate blood for four months. The rarest blood type is AB, present in 1 per cent of Caucasians, according to research by the America Red Cross. Blood transfusions are carried out daily in Spanish hospitals with more than 6,200 patients being given them, of whom almost a quarter are fighting cancer and a similar figure receiving transfusions during or after surgery. We could never forget EWN’s own Benidorm Has Talent, when amazing Kayleigh Taylor won the €2,000 prize and EWN raised €15,000 for cancer charity AECC. Guests were surprised with a performance from X Factor star Rowetta, who amazed everyone with her vocals Age Concern is a wonderful charity that provides help and friendship for the older English-speaking community on the Costa del Sol. We loved organising a fun-filled Garden Party at Sohail Castle in Fuengirola, where live entertainment with Rowetta and a delicious buffet was enjoyed by all. This year, our EWN team - led by director Steven Euesden joined the charity at the top of the iconic Sunset Beach Hotel in Benalmadena and bravely abseiled all the way down! EWN has lent its support to MABS Cancer Support Group, backing their spring ball in April 2015, which raised €5,000. And when EWN owners Michel and Steven Euesden held a 10-year wedding blessing, they shunned gifts in favour of
donations to Cudeca. Each year, we support the Positively Pink Ball which annually raises tens of thousands of Euros for breast cancer screening. And last year, EWN was proud to get behind the second annual Oceana Grant A Wish Pink and Blue Ball which collected €16,000 for some exceptional causes. Over the years, we have formed a close bond with the Leighton family as we worked together to raise money for the Tomas Leighton Care Charity. Lovely Tomas suffers from cerebral palsy and epilepsy and needs the community’s helping hand. He can always count on our support! Always looking to give back to our readers, we dreamed up the fun idea of giving away a car! You heard right! In return, we wanted to know in what ways we could improve to better meet our readers’ needs. One lucky reader was gifted their very own €15,000 EWN car! In 2014, our readers also got the opportunity to nominate someone for our Make a Wish campaign. We teamed up with friends in the business community to give someone in need the most amazing prizes! Never forgetting little Leo who fought bravely against cancer. Hope for heart SON ESPASES hospital has successfully carried out the first national air transfer of a patient using t h e e x t r a c o r p o re a l oxygenation technique (ECMO). The transfer was carried out on November 14 for a nine-month-old baby who suffers from a serious heart condition. Once stabilised during the night, the child
left the paediatric ICU with a specialist unit to Son Sant Joan airport, where they travelled on an Air Force plane to Vall d’Hebron Hospital in Barcelona. ECMO is a complex technique for cardiac and respiratory support which aids patients who have severely affected organs that cannot develop normal function on their own. The
technique allows for the oxygenation of blood up to several weeks. The process was coordinated by SAMU-061 alongside a team of nine professionals. To organise the transfer, an extraordinary endowment consisting of an advanced life support vehicle was provided, equipped with a technician, two intervention vehicles and a logistics unit.

Illegal vandal THE National Police has arrested a 27-yearold man for allegedly causing damage to several parked cars in Palma. The incident occurred last Thursday (November 14), when a resident of the Es Rafal neighbourhood saw a young man violently striking cars. The witness ran after him, bravely managing to restrain the offender until police arrived. Officers verified that five cars had suffered significant damage, with the man fracturing some of their windows in an attempt to re-
trieve valuables from inside. The man also carried a backpack holding suspicious items, which the police later confirmed to have been stolen from a vehicle parked outside the Son Malferit shopping centre. Once arrested, the suspect was charged with criminal damage and robbery with force. Officers verified that the man is an Algerian citizen without legal status, so he has also been charged with violating the Immigration Law and will be expulsed from Spain if he receives a jail term of more than one year. More police ORIHUELA is giving priority to recruiting more Local Police in its latest staff recruitment drive. The councillor for Human Resources, Luisa Boné, reported that the process for recruiting 12 more officers has started. José María Pomares, Chief of the Local Police said the force has been declining since 2013 and has a current strength of 126 officers. With the new recruitment drive, plus other personnel already in the pipeline, there will be 25 new officers bringing staffing to 151 officers, one more than in 2013. Orihuela City Council has a total staff of 731 municipal employees, of which 269 are workers, 207 career civil servants and 255 interim civil servants. This makes the percentage of interim officials around 55.19 per cent. It is the intention of the council, according to Boné, to reduce this by approximately 10 per cent during the term of the current government.

Charity walk raises handsome sum THE Animal Protection Society Albox charity walk raised over €500 for the charity. The walkers and their dogs met at the Rosaleda Hotel in Arboleas and completed a five-kilometre circular walk on a scenic, but not overly taxing route led by David Ridyard. A water stop halfway provided a refreshing rest. There were a huge variety of dogs, with some of the smallest having the biggest of personalities. Event organiser Margaret Ridyard was delighted with the number of people who turned out to take part in the walk, despite the wind. She thanked all the volunteers who helped and all the participants, some of whom had raised large amounts through sponsorship. Jack raised the most and walked proudly with his owner Maggie. HOSPITAL Costa del Sol, in Marbella, recently held a class for patients with breast cancer in which a group of professionals and those who had already gone through the disease offered guidance and advice on how to deal with it. The workshops will continue and aim to become an exchange of information and experiences between both groups, with the aim of improving the quality of life of those diagnosed with breast cancer. Patients can establish an action plan to develop in their daily lives by addressing issues such as food, physical exercise, rest and what medication they can take during chemotherapy, all explained without technical jargon and in understandable language. This initiative has taken place due to the success of previous classes held by the hospital for patients suffering from chronic obstructive disease, heart disease and anticoagulation.

FIVE of Axarquia’s major towns made the journey to London last week to take part in the 2019 World Trade Market. The World Trade Market Exhibition is one of the most important trade shows in the world when it comes to tourism, and this year, the Costa del Sol turned out in force to represent the Malaga Province. Nerja, Torrox, Frigiliana, Velez-Malaga and Rincon de la Victoria joined Antequera, Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola, Marbella, Benahavis and Manilva to take part in the show to promote the region’s unique tourism qualities. Numerous companies and travel operators also attended to help reassure the British public that Andalucia is staying committed to UK tourists in the face of Brexit uncertainty. Torrox made their mark with a high tech audio visual display that promoted the region’s ‘best climate in Europe’ slogan, whilst Rincon de la Victoria showed support to the Añoreta Gold Club, paying homage to the fact that golfing tourism equals almost 40 per cent of the town’s tourist numbers throughout the summer. This year, Frigiliana also joined its Axarquian neighbours to help promote its qualities, but also to learn about new trends and strategies in tourism to push the town forward.

Next day appointments for residency in Alicante City THE Spanish authorities have issued a reminder that it is possible to organise next day residency appointments in Alicante City via the Spanish government website. In all 180 appointments are being opened up on a daily basis, and there is quite a lot of availability each day. Since appointments are opened up each day, if there are none left at the time of checking, it is worth bearing in mind there will be more the following day. The appointments can also be used to apply for ‘caracter permanente’ for anyone who has been resident for more than five years. Hence anyone who used to go to the main police stations in Orihuela, Torrevieja, Denia and Benidorm can now take advantage of this new resource in the provincial capital. The instructions for booking an appointment on the website are straightforward enough. Go to the website https://sede.administracionespubli cas.gob.es/icpplus/index.html. Toys’R’Us bounces back THE friendly giraffe known as Geof frey will forever be associated with the Toys’R’Us business which went into terminal decline in the USA. Although the 16foot statue of Dr G Raffe, as he was originally known, has moved to a children’s hospital in New Jersey, the Spanish arm of the business has made a remark able recovery. It was purchased just over a year ago by a Portuguese investment fund and is now expecting to break even in 2019 with a turnover of €160 million.

LEGALLY SPEAKING Can he extend his stay? I have what should be a simple question, but having trawled through dozens of websites and forums, consulted my lawyers, and talked to estate agents, I cannot get a straight answer. If I want to stay in Spain over the winter between 90 and 180 days (surely I am not the only one in this po sition), can I apply for an extension allowing me to stay for longer than 90 days without being compelled to apply for a residence permit? Tax payers unhappy ACCORDING to the Partido Popu lar Financial Head of the Madrid Community, Javier Fernández Lasquetty, the election of a PSOE government could cost taxpayers in the area some €5.9 billion. The policy put forward by act ing Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez calls for a harmonisation of taxes across Spain in the event that he is returned with a working major ity. Free internet for UK households LABOUR leader Jeremy Corbyn has announced that if his party wins the General Election, he will take action to nationalise the fixedline internet network owned by BT. Group bedding down SOUTH AFRICAN retailer Steinhoff has confirmed that it is to sell its loss-making UK furniture business Blue Group to European retailer Alteri Investors. Although no details of the val-
ue of the sale have been released, it is known that Blue Group which owns UK-based furniture companies Harveys Furniture and Bensons for Beds has an annual turnover of some £500
million (€550 million). The business operates 269 stores in the UK as well as four manufacturing sites and five distribution centres which between them employ 2,700 staff.

This enterprise was aimed at sup plying very high speed connections in northern England to some 60,000 households initially, with the plan to expand this to take in some three mil lion private customers. Whilst Talk Talk has so far invest ed around £60 million (€69 million) in developing this project, other suppliers have also been putting money into their own alternatives and any new Labour government would have to negotiate with them all.

Plenty more worms LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT IN my humble opinion Clinton was a far better liar than Prince Andrew. Although the ex-president was actually telling more porkies than Pinocchio, his statement that he ‘never had sexual intercourse with that woman’ did appear to be somewhat sincere and believable. By contrast Prince Andrews’s televised attempt at damage limitation was an utter disaster. Would you ever consider buying a used car from this man? Personally I would rather deal with Arthur Daley! Some of his denials were quite bizarre. When asked about his young accuser’s accusa tions of him ‘sweating heavily’ he said that from his involvement in the Falkland’s war he had contract ed a condition that meant he didn’t sweat! I looked this up. This malady is known as Anhidrosis and is an extremely serious condition that can be fatal. It needs special treatment and medical expertise in cluding carrying water spray to irrigate the body. Ever seen him having a quick spray over the years? No? Nor me. The truth is, the whole exercise stinks of the usual establishment´s connivance to

protect the backsides of the privileged and aristoc racy at any price. As I have often stated in this col umn, in this respect they will stop at nothing. You al so can’t help ironically drawing parallels between this latest saga and the Duke of Edinburgh’s alleged involvement in the Christine Keeler affair of the 60’s. The main perpetrator of those particular sexu
al shenanigans was Stephen Ward. Ward was also arrested and put on trial. When it was apparent the trial was going against him, he in credulously asked was ‘nobody going to step for ward and help him’? When it appeared they weren’t, he became a loose cannon and the follow ing day could easily have blown the whistle on them
all. That night, surprise surprise, he mysteriously ‘committed suicide!’ Well I can tell you, in the pic tures that emerged of him being rushed out of his apartment on a stretcher there was not a medic in sight. He was in fact surrounded by ‘men in suits’ speedily hustling him into the ambulance. This was of course the reason Christine Keeler went quiet, she was obviously petrified that she too could ‘unexpectedly commit suicide.’ All sound a bit familiar, doesn’t it? No, I’m afraid none of this dam age limitation is happening by chance. This is the result of a typical ongoing establish ment conspiracy. The main character in the investi gation ‘commits suicide.’ The Prince goes on televi sion to categorically deny any involvement and then the best lawyers money can buy go into court and endeavour to destroy those who have made the ac cusations. Unfortunately, because he totally screwed up, the prosecution must be rubbing their hands at the veritable colander of holes they can pick in his interpretation of the events. My guess is his lawyers will now never dare risk him actually appearing on the witness stand. One thing is for sure, there are plenty more worms to appear from this particular can before they do final ly manage to screw the lid down. If they ever do! Keep the faith. And I thought the USA had cornered the market in snowflakes! Some hypersensitive delegates at a gender conference at Roehampton University were issued with red, yel low and green traffic lights on their lanyards to indicate wordlessly their preparedness or otherwise to engage in conversation about the complex

NICK HORNE’S Rich Pick Freelance correspondent, London, England DO you lust for a glass of whisky? A winter warmer? One for the road? Then you may have considered bidding for a bottle of whisky at the recent auction held in London at Sotheby’s the auctioneers. A world record bid was achieved when The Macallan 60 yearold 1926 soared to an eyewatering £1,452,000. This whisky some say is the ‘holy grail’ of whiskies was the star of more than 450 bottles of Scotch amassed by a private American collector over a 20year period. All of the lots in the auction sold, no surprise there if you are a whisky drinker, though these collections are col lected as investments or simple obsessions; not drunk. Seems a pity. However, there are many shops in London and they are all in full seasonal swing right now. Of course New Bond Street, the home of Sothe by’s is one of the most significant of shopping streets in the world. Rumour has it [these shops are very discreet] that one fabulous and frenetic shopping week saw £2 billion spent. The cast of brands and shops is iconic. Expensive? Of course not. Every piece of shopping is affordable though only to a select minority. Nearby are more streets lined with tempting shops. Hordes of shoppers from across the plan et enjoy the Christmas lights which are now blaz ing overhead in the early dusk as the throng

A Quantum Leap into the future? GOOGLE, IBM and China are in a race to create a truly useful quan tum computer. And billions of dollars all around the world are being ploughed into the technology. In October 2019, Sycamore, (Google’s quan tum computer) performed a calculation in a mere 200 seconds that would take the world’s fastest supercomputer, the IBM Summit, 10,000 years to perform! Yes, 10,000 years!! With Sycamore, Google claims to have reached quan tum supremacy, the point where a quantum computer can perform calculations that surpass anything the most advanced supercomputers today can do. That’s great you say but what can it be used for? It could design more efficient batteries, make ef fective medicines, better security, sensors and accu rate measurement (metrology) in the form of atomic clocks and more accurate GPS to be used in self driving autonomous cars for example and if you would like to buy one, a Quantum Computer is like ly to cost a cool $100 million. Quote from Matt Vaughn, from the Univer sity of Texas. “In the hands of cancer re searchers, a Quantum Computer that can out run the computational speed of tens of thousands of traditional super computers would rapidly accelerate the pace of research in “genomics, genetics, radiation physics, and biomedical imaging,” surely just that on its own is a reason to push ahead isn’t it. We can’t discuss Quantum Computing without mentioning the other buzz word in the tech world at the moment which is Artificial Intelligence or AI.
The UK’s Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is exploring the use of AI to judge whether benefit claims are true. An £8 million ‘intelligent automation garage’ has been created by the DWP with the goal of developing up to 100 new robots to assist Britain’s welfare system. One thousand new IT staff have also been re cruited to help support the DWP’s ambitions, mmm so a 1,000 IT staff on approx 25,000 grand a year saves money. Artificial Intelligence can be used to solve prob lems across the board. AI can help businesses in crease sales, detect fraud, improve customer experi ence, automate work processes and provide predictive analysis. Financial services can benefit from AIbased process automation and fraud detec tion. Well that’s the good news and here is the not so good news... It is predicted the Artificial Intelligence will even tually replace Telemarketing, Bookkeeping Clerks, Compensation and Benefits Managers, Reception ists, Couriers, Proofreaders, Computer Support Specialists, Market Research Analysts, Advertising Salespeople and Retail Salespeople. Artificial Intelligence as yet cannot replace the following: Human Resource Managers, Sales Managers, Marketing Managers, Public Relations Managers, Chief Executives, Event Planners, Writers, Software Developers, Editors, Graphic Designers, Musicians (okay I made that one up)! :) ronhowells@euroweeklynews.com

I will not spoil the surprise if you are heading to Piccadilly any time soon as you will see for yourself the crowds on the pavement jostling for a peek. Yes, there are other department stores however none is like Fortnum & Mason. Each is charismatic in its own unique way and draw
hordes of loyal shoppers from around the world each year. However for me the biscuits at Fortnum cannot be equalled, indeed I know a man who would do serious damage for a jar of their lemon curd. Christmas just would not be the same with out a tin of Fortnum & Mason biscuits. Of course Fortnum’s food hall is world famous and busy throughout the year; at Christmas their wicker hampers stuffed with exquisite delica cies are shipped to dearest friends and family through out the world. Go be yond the food hall and you will find that the shop is spread over six floors with choice ideas and services , restaurants and even a wine bar. Specialist depart ments curated and devoted to babies and home entertainment as well as fragrances and the essentials for the man or woman in your life. This shop being Fortnum’s tea is big; quite a proportion of the floor space is devoted to tea.Not only in the food halls but also elsewhere. In among the crockery I came across a vast selec tion of tea pots illustrating the Evolution of the Tea Pot as well as all the paraphernalia to do with tea. Inevitably when you have the most ex quisite tea leaf to hand you clearly need an ex quisite tea pot. Yours for a mere £5,000. Nick Horne, London, England

ON THE STREETS Dear Editor I AM writing in response to the Our View section in last week’s paper. You spoke about homelessness and how it is getting worse in Spain. My wife and I live in Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol and we are getting quite wor ried about the amount of homeless people on the streets. It’s getting to the point that going to the supermarket is a problem. They camp outside and continuously ask for money. Whilst I can empathise with their situation, it gets quite intimidating when they shout and have scuffles between them. My wife doesn’t go to certain places on her own any more. I think we need to bring this issue to our town halls and really give it some impor tance. What can we all do to get this sorted? We need to get these people off the street for their safety and ours. Animal cruelty Hello Hola I JUST read the article on animal cruelty in Paloma Park in Benalmadena from Octo ber and wanted to add that during my holiday in July I also witnessed teenagers terrorising the animals, chasing them and trying the catch them. I was very up set by this and it altered how I felt about one of my favourite parts of Benalmade na. I really want as many people involved with the park like the staff running it to be aware and to do something about it. I know resources will be tight but as a place that people visit often as a family and with children to enjoy the nature and animals this is the last disturbing thing you want to witness and you want to feel as if the animals are being re spected and their welfare needs upheld. BLACK FRIDAY has rolled back around and is planned for November 29 this year. Retailers worldwide have spent the last month reminding shoppers about the incoming discounts and bargains. But where did the shopping madness start? The term refers informally to the Friday following Thanksgiving Day in the United States and marks the start of America’s Christmas shopping. Every year, the shopping frenzy has increased and retailers open earlier and earlier to welcome the masses. Since 2006, there have been 12 reported deaths and 117 injuries in the US. Europe has now seen the arrival of the legendary Friday. As with most things, the experience hasn’t reached the excessiveness or extravagance of our neighbours across the pond. Shops have simply welcomed the new tradition as an opportunity to get the Christmas season underway and each year festivities seem to start at an earlier date. There is no doubt that Black Friday has infiltrated and greatly impacts buying trends. Consumers are getting into the habit of waiting until Black Friday sales to buy their selected items and some choose to get an early start on present buying. Could the new tradition mean the end of last-minute Christmas shopping? Following in the same footsteps, technological companies have now created Cyber Monday for their tech products and it will be on November 2.

CHEMICALS found in certain makeup products, shampoos and lotions could disrupt hormone levels in teenage girls. Scientists have warned that this disruption increases the risks of cancer and other illnesses later in life. Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, (USA) focused their study on teenage girls as they ‘use more personal care products per day than the average adult woman.’ For three days, the study’s 100 teenage participants stopped using their regular cosmetics and were provided with cosmetics labelled free of chemicals; including phtha lates, parabens, triclosan and oxybenzone; all chemicals thought to affect changes of hormone levels within young women. After just three days of not using their regular products, their dangerous chemical levels dropped by 45 per cent. Study coauthor Maritza Cardenas, said: “One of the goals of our study was to create awareness among the partici pants of the chemicals found in everyday products, to help make people more conscious about what they’re using.”

Dance yourself healthy ENGAGING with the arts can be beneficial for both mental and physical health. This is a key conclusion of a new report from the WHO Re gional Office for Europe analysing the evidence from over 900 global publications

can improve physical and men tal health,” says Dr Piroska Östlin, WHO Regional Director for Europe a.i. “The examples cited in this ground breaking WHO report show ways in which the arts can tackle ‘wicked’ or complex
health challenges such as dia betes, obesity and mental ill health. They consider health and wellbeing in a broader so cietal and community context, and offer solutions that com mon medical practice has so far been unable to address effec
tively,” Dr Östlin explains. The report reviews arts activ ities that seek to promote health and prevent ill health, as well as manage and treat physi cal and mental ill health and support endoflife care. It was launched on Monday, Novem ber 11. Arts and health throughout life From before birth to the end of life, the arts can positively in fluence health. For example, young children whose parents read to them before bed have longer nighttime sleep and im proved concentration at school. Among adolescents living in ur ban areas, dramabased peer education can support responsi ble decisionmaking, enhance wellbeing and reduce exposure to violence. Later in life, music can support cognition in people with dementia singing in par ticular has been found to im prove attention, episodic mem ory and executive function. Arts in health care In healthcare settings, arts activities can be used to supple ment or enhance treatment protocols. For example:
*Listening to music or mak ing art have been found to re duce the side effects of cancer treatment, including drowsi ness, lack of appetite, shortness of breath and nausea; *Arts activities in emergency settings, including music, crafts and clowning, have been found to reduce anxiety, pain and blood pressure, particularly for children but also for their par ents; and *Dance has been found re peatedly to provide clinically meaningful improvements in motor scores for people with Parkinson’s disease. The report highlights that some arts interventions not on ly produce good results, but can also be more costeffective than more standard biomedical treatments. They can combine multiple healthpromoting fac tors at once (such as physical activity and mental health sup port) and have a low risk of negative outcomes. Several countries are now looking to arts and social pre scribing schemes, whereby pri marycare doctors can refer their patients to arts activities.

Banderas on stage ANTONIO BANDERAS is back in the limelight, this time, tak ing on the big stage at Mala ga’s Soho Theatre. Autumn is now here AS summer is now over, it is that time to start thinking of red wine and winter food. So I thought I would share my late mother’s recipe for what she called shepherds pie all her life, though as it is made with beef, these days we would have to be correct and call it cottage pie. Yes, you say, what an ordi nary humdrum dish. Except you might not think so if you read on…. It starts with standard ingredi ents of minced beef and chopped onions. First, you fry the mince until it just turns brown. You are getting rid of the fat. Seriously buy the best mince beef you can afford. The least fat the better. Drain the fat off. Then into your baking dish go the mince and the onions. Now add a layer of wellchopped cab bage. Generously sprinkle on some Worcestershire sauce. Finally add a can of Guinness. Put in the oven on a medium heat covering the mixture with foil. Take out every half an hour
and stir. It should reduce but not go dry. The potatoes are next. Peel, half and quarter, and boil. When ready, test if they fall off a knife easily, then put in a bowl for mashing. Here are three topping ideas: Type 1: add generous dollops of mayonnaise until the mashing gives a good heavy smooth con sistency. No lumps please! Add salt and pepper and then the potato is ready for spreading. Type 2: add parmesan cheese to the process, best finely grated but can be flakes. If you use flakes spread generously and evenly. Type 3: add horseradish to the mash potato mayonnaise mix, goes especially well com bined with the parmesan cheese. If you need to pause the dish to get it ready for a specific time, do so at this stage and hold it back out of the oven. The last stage takes around 2030 min utes. When the mince has reduced, but is still moist with some liquid still showing on the bottom of
the dish, add dollops of mash potato and spread with a fork. Then put back in the oven with out foil, at the top to just cause a brown colour to take hold of the potato on the crest of the pat tern left by spreading with the fork. Put the bottle of Worcester shire sauce on the table in case anyone wants a topup. I usually serve with peas or a vegetable mix. Leftovers can be frozen suc cessfully in portions for another time. Now serve with a nice hearty Tinto Rioja or Ribuero del Duero. Enjoy! Thanks Mum! John Le Sueur

British mega-project begins A MASSIVE British project on the Costa del Sol hopes to revolutionise retail and property. Development giant Intu has set its sights on Spain and has begun the expansion in Torremolinos. The future resort will include two hotels, a big shopping complex, a cinema, more than 70 restaurants, a theatre and eight neighbourhoods. British company Intu owns many of the UK’s popular retail destinations and is looking to expand in Spain. Architects and designers have worked to bring the idea to life, with the resort set to open in 2023. Eight neighbourhoods with many activities will provide entertainment including a 5,000-person concert venue.
An initial investment of €800 million has made it one of the biggest retail projects in Spain. The global resort will gather national and international businesses in one place, and calculations predict it will receive around 12.6 million visitors every year. Building work will start in 2020 once all administrative procedures have been completed and a General Urban Planning Licence has been published on the Torremolinos Official Bulletin Board. Although not all the necessary permits are in place, the company has wasted no time with the preparations and ground clearing has already started. The estate is close to Palacio de los Congresos and workers have made a start on
pruning the land where the leisure centre will stand. Since announcing the big development, the company has already started negotiations with worldwide businesses. Yelmo Cines has agreed to a new generation-themed cinema over 9,500 square metres and 16 high-tech screens, whilst Bankia’s Principe Pío Theatre has also reached a deal with Intu and will take on the resort’s theatre experience. Eight neighbourhoods will encompass all the different activities, with El Bulevar being the main shopping district. La Galería will host large retailers and sporting areas like a basketball court. Central Park will be a green space for

‘Kids can’t do ‘owt these days’ BARRY DUKE THE mightiest row between my par ents occurred when my mother found me fast asleep in a patch of mint growing around the backyard tap. She startled me into consciousness by turning on the tap, and demanded to know how long I’d been lying outside. ‘Don’t remember,’ I mumbled. She rushed back indoors and asked dad if he knew I’d passed out in the back gar den. ‘Sure,’ he replied. ‘I heard Barry sneak into the house at 2am, then rush outside to be sick. He was as drunk as a skunk. I laid him on his side so he wouldn’t choke on his vomit then left him there to teach him a lesson.’ All hell broke loose. While mum in sisted that her 16yearold darling could have died out there, dad pointed out that it was a warm summer’s night and that there was no evidence of maneating critters roaming the neigh bourhood. After that they didn’t speak to one another for a week. And to this day I feel nauseous every time I smell mint.
CRAZY WORLD: Children need opportunities to develop skills.
The memory of that incident was sparked when I read yet another of those daft reports of children being protected from harm by riskaverse school personnel. This one broke in November, with the Telegraph saying: ‘A pri mary school headteacher has been ridiculed after introducing a ‘gentle hands’ playground policy where children are banned from playing tag. Joanne Smith, head of Rudyard Kipling Primary School in Brighton, has also banned pupils from engag ing in any ‘physical’ games.’ ‘Oh no,’ I yelled, ‘not again!’ For this was simply a repeat of a 2016 story. On that occasion the BBC reported that Christ the King school in Leeds, in troduced the ‘notag’ rule after chil dren’s ‘clothes were torn’ and pupils were left ‘upset.’ Billy Salkeld, who had a child at the school, said: ‘The world’s gone crazy, kids can’t do ‘owt these days.’ Earlier, people ridiculed Ivy Lane Pri mary in Chippenham, Wiltshire, which banned kids from playing with conkers because they might trigger nut aller gies. Commenting on the ban, Hazel Gowland, a former teacher who has a nut allergy herself, said of the school
authorities, ‘they are nuts.’ She added that there was no evidence that any child had ever become ill playing with horse chestnuts. None of this mollycoddling entered parents’ heads when I was a young ster. If it had we’d have seen the re moval of swings in children’s play grounds, along with carousels, jungle gyms and the like. How well I remember the day when my great aunt Annie took me to a local playground and I stupidly decided to go facefirst down a slide. The result? I ploughed into a patch of gravel, grazed my forehead and howled. Auntie An nie simply licked her handkerchief, wiped the wound, told me that I was a ‘silly beggar’ and ordered me to stop being a crybaby. So, how have we reached the point where parents and policy makers go to ridiculous lengths to cotton wool kids? I have no idea, but experts in the field all agree on one thing: Everyday life is full of dangers and challenges and children need opportunities to de velop the skills associated with manag ing risk and making informed judge ments about them from a very young age.

Tesla in Berlin ELECTRIC vehicle pioneer Tesla is set to build its first European facto ry and design facility in Berlin in a move to further boost its reputa tion for reliability and sporting prowess. Tesla’s chief executive, Elon Musk, made the announcement at a Germany’s Golden Steering Awards ceremony, stating that European ‘Gigafactory’ would make batteries, powertrains and vehicles starting with its Model Y SUV. Musk cited risks surrounding the UK’s exit from the EU for his deci sion, “Brexit [uncertainty] made it too risky to put a Gigafactory in the UK.” Tesla will be taking on Germany’s own BMW, Mercedes and Volkswa

HAMILTON APOLOGISES LEWIS HAMILTON apologised to driver Alex Albon after the world champion accepted full re sponsibility for their late crash in Brazil. Hamilton, who was running be hind Albon after he stopped for a third time under a late safety car, went for an overtake pass on the Londonborn Red Bull driver for second place with just two laps left. But the Mercedes driver crashed into the side of Albon, spinning the Red Bull man around. Hamilton limped to the flag with damage to the front of his car but later received a five second penalty from the race stewards demoting him from third to seventh position. “I apologise to Alex, and I hold my hands up for the accident,” said Hamilton, who also collect ed two penalty points on his drivers’ licence. He said he totally accepted
the blame pointing out that it was not his intention and “you hardly ever see me collide with anyone. UEFA has selected Mallor ca to host the Advanced Course for Elite Referees in January 2020. The annual course will see the top male and fe male referees from across Europe perform physical and theoretical tests for five days of intensive training. Held at the end of January, the event takes place just weeks be fore the playoffs for the Champions and Europa League. During the new edition of the advanced course, there will be a strong fo cus on Video Assistant
Referee (VAR) technology, which aims to assist refer ees in their determination on whether there is an in fringement in goals scored. Encouraging referees to maintain their consistent ly high standards, the course also serves as an introduction for those that have recently ob tained their international accreditation. Representatives of UEFA have also revealed their intentions to hold the course at the Ciudad De portiva Antonio Asensio, the training ground and academy base of Real Mallorca football club. This is the second time in recent years that UEFA has chosen Spain as the destination for the annual course, which was hosted in Malaga in 2017. A total of 123 officials are expected to attend, 72 from UEFA’s men’s elite
