FOUR Killer Whales or Orcas have been causing great excitement having been spotted in w a t e r s o ff C a r t a g e na for the first time. After hearing reports of sightings, researchers took to the waves in search of the elusive creatures. This is the first time that such creatures have been ‘officially’ sighted in the area. Coming up roses BIG plans foresee the revegetation of at least six areas in the town centre of Cartagena. The municipal plan was approved once the government team and opposition parties came to an agreement. The campaign will invest in planting campaigns throughout the legislature. The town hall will turn a new page after reforestation tasks in urban areas fell into oblivion and local government has appointed 2020 as the year to recover lost time. Half a dozen spaces will be reviewed to see if previously planted vegetation can be recovered. The next step will be to plan the reforestation in order to bring green spaces back to life. Among the areas under review are the Cerro de los Moros, La Asomada, the surroundi n g s o f t h e Te n t e g o r r a P a r k , L a Va g u a d a , C a b e z o Ve n t u r a a n d Cabezo Beaza. The Reforestation committee, which had been inactive for 15 months, appointed the councillor for Sustainable City and European Projects - Cristina Mora - as their president. Mora hopes the plan will be completed by next spring.
In good spirits THE Marina Bar in To r r e v i e j a r e c e n t l y held a successful ‘Fright Night’ event to raise funds for the AFA Alzheimer’s charity. The night, attended by many in horror guises, featured comedy entertainment, a raffle and a lovely two-course meal. Dancers performed a fantastic Thriller routine and attendees were awarded prizes for the best scary outfits. Killer Whales It is thought they may have made their way to the Cartagena area from the Strait of Gibraltar. Local naturalists have already been in touch with colleagues from the Campo de Gibraltar area to see if the male can be identified from its unique dorsal fin markings. Previously the closest sighting of Orcas to Cartagena was off Malaga. Killer Whales, which measure up to nine metres and can weigh more than 5,000 kilos, are marine mammals at the top of the food chain. They feed on fish, squid, seals and other cetaceans.
PASSENGERS INJURED: Headon collision.
A 21-YEAR-OLD man died and four others were injured on Sunday morning when the car they were travelling in crashed headon into a pylon on the roundabout in Plaza Juan XXIII in Alcantrilla. It is reported that the driver died instantly and one of the four passengers, all aged between 19 and 21, is in a critical condition. The incident occurred at approximately 6am and allegedly the group from Alcantrilla had spent the previous night partying in Murcia. Bike accident TWO pedestrians were injured last Sunday afternoon after they were allegedly hit by a motorcycle on the CV-905 passing through Torrevieja. The victims were a 77-yearold man a 25-year-old boy who were transferred to the Hospital de Torrevieja with unknown injuries.

It’s hardly surprising this incredibly striking island of San de Gaztelugatxe was selected as a filming location for Game of Thrones. LOCATED along the Bay of Biscay, 35km east from Bilbao, the island fortress - literally translated as castle rock (from Basque ‘gaztelu’ = castle + ‘aitz’ = rock) - was known as Dragonstone in season 7 of the BHO series. The island is connected to the mainland by a man-made stone bridge which leads into a narrow path of 241 steps which weaves its way to the top where there is a church with a bell along the front of its façade. According to legend, anybody who
climbs to the top should ring the bell three times and make a wish. The church at the top is dedicated to John the Baptist, who is said to have set foot on the island. However, the small church is not original and has been rebuilt several times over the centuries, having burned down. The first hermitage is believed to have been built here in the ninth century. Having become a convent before being abandoned by the friars in the 14th century, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe had a strategic purpose as a de-
fensive outpost for the lords of Biscay. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe also played a small role during the Spanish Inquisition. Witches and their ritualistic meetings known as Akelarre in Basque make up a part of the Basque mythology. The church deteriorated over time and it was eventually demolished in 1886 and rebuilt from scratch. Unfortunately, during the demolition process, all of the artifacts found in the ground, such as coins and cannon balls, were thrown into the sea.
Travel for treatment Road remodeling CANCER treatment in Lorca, Yecla and Caravaca is under scrutiny after the High Court of Justice annulled the current system. Health authorities in Murcia had put an arrangement in place to avoid unnecessary travel for cancer patients. Since 2016, oncologists from La Arrixaca Hospital had been visiting patients in regional hospitals. However, the high Court has ruled in favour of Medical Union CESM, which had denounced the system as void for not having been previously negotiated with the trade union organisation. For the moment, patients will continue to be treated in their regional hospitals and the service will not be affected. Meanwhile, Murcia’s Health Services will tackle the issue in order to comply with the judicial sentence. If Health Services can’t continue offering the service, patients would have to travel to Murcia to continue seeing their specialists and receiving chemotherapy.

RESIDENTS near the Caravaca road have urged the town council to include a bend on Rambla de Los Arcos in their urban regeneration works which had been excluded from the project. Councillor for Development, Isabel Casalduero, made a supervisory visit to the remodelling works at the entrance to the town and promised to highlight the situation to the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura (CHS) to find a solution. In the meantime, the uncovered area of the boulevard will be tackled so that it does not continue to be ‘a focus of unhealthiness’ for the inhabitants of the neighbourhood. The works affect a five-kilometre stretch of RM711 and will include the construction of pathways and the reordering of spaces to obtain parking where possible in the town.

Dramatic police chase POLICE in Torrevieja had to fire shots at a car to bring it to a halt when the driver accelerated away nearly hitting an officer. Details of last week’s incident have only just been released as a Guardia Civil investigation is ongoing. Officers from the Local Police were manning a routine vehicle checkpoint when at around 8pm they noticed a car stop about 100 metres short of the control at La Veleta. Two officers approached her and asked why she had stopped. Without a word, she put her foot down, accelerated away and allegedly tried to run over one of the policemen. He pulled his gun and fired at the car’s front wheels in an attempt to stop the car as it sped away along Avenida Desiderio Rodriguez, hitting several vehicles on its way. Local Police started a chase, with two police cars intercepting the vehicle as it was about to join the N-332. As an officer approached

the car it once more sped off and ended up back at the original control point, where the driver again allegedly tried to run over two officers standing in the road. More shots were fired, this time finding their mark and shooting out the front tyres of the car. Police arrested a middleaged woman for a crime of assault on a person of authority, although further charges of at-
tempted murder, driving without a licence, without insurance and in a vehicle allegedly stolen may be brought. The woman’s passenger told police she had tried to get out of the car at the first stop but was taken by surprise when the driver sped off. Guardia Civil have been investigating the incident to see if firearms were used by police in a ‘proportionate manner.’

Guarding the community SECURITY is being boosted in Cartagena with new neighbourhood police units planned for 2020. Local Police is set to create multiple units to patrol neighbourhoods and oversee public events. A total of 54 new officers will be incorporated to the force and be tasked with improving security and reducing overtime. Ten officers have already been transferred from other town halls and 44 more will join in the next seven months. They will reinforce units that have been decimated in recent years and will allow the creation of a ‘neighbourhood police.’ The new body will provide services such as the surveillance of events, which is an issue as officers take on extra hours. Councillor for security, Juan Pedro Torralba, is advocating for the strengthening of these units with the new officers.

Abandoned piglets NINE pigs were found abandoned by bins in Churra. The animals were in an orchard area next to the edge of the road. The herd was composed of at least nine pigs, including six piglets and they were
found in Rambla de Graso street, in the Murcian district of Churra. They had been abandoned among rubbish piles next to a pronounced curve in the road. Members of the town hall’s Zoonosis service arrived at the site to locate the pigs.

It’s a tourist trap STRATEGIC initiative ‘Made in Costa Blanca’ looks to reinforce year-round tourism in Costa Blanca. Alicante officials announced that 159 businesses from 50 municipalities have already enlisted. President of Alicante’s Provincial Government, Carlos Mazón, presented the product that aims to boost production sectors and turn them into an attraction for visitors throughout the year. The main objective is giving value to local products and handicrafts, by means of attractive experiences focused on tourism. The promotional enterprise ‘Made in Costa Blanca’ already has the involvement of 159 provincial companies related to footwear, wine, fish markets, agricultural food and textiles. This industrial tourism offers visitors interesting experiences such as visiting factories and workshops, as
well as food tasting and participating in the creations of some of Alicante’s most representative products. The project has been created with residents in mind, but also hopes to attract tourists
during the low season.

Child sex abuser jailed A JAIL sentence of 14 years has been confirmed for a man who sexually abused and made pregnant a 12-yearold girl in Murcia. The region’s Superior Court of Justice (TSJRM) has dismissed an appeal filed by the convicted man. It upheld the sentence handed down by the Provincial Court of Murcia, and declared it proven that the events occurred between the months of June and August 2017 in the home that the man shared with several other people including the child and her mother. The court heard that he took advantage of the moment when the girl’s mother was away for work to abuse the child. The girl was so frightened by the man’s advances that on one occasion she took a knife to her bedroom, but she was unable to escape his unwanted attentions. In the court’s written sentence, it was said that as a consequence of the sexual assaults the girl fell pregnant. Medical tests showed that it was a 99.99 per cent certainty that the convicted man was the father. The TSJRM has upheld in its entirety the sentence appealed, which also includes the payment of €60,000 compensation to the girl for moral damages.

Mar Menor desert by Dilip Kuner AN analysis has shown that a oneoff pollution spill was not to blame for the death of thousands of fish and crustaceans in the Mar Menor. On October 12 the beaches of Villanitos and La Mota (Lo Pagán) were covered in dead marine life, with three tons of fish having to be cleared away. Initially it was feared that a spillage might have caused the environmental disaster, but tests ordered by the Public Prosecutor have shown that it was caused by a lack of oxygen in the water. The thousands of fish and crustaceans that came out of the water in Lo Pagán in search of oxygen last October 12 are just a reflection of the desert that the Mar Menor has become. A report by the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) commissioned by the Ministry for Ecological Transition states that the mortality of fish and crustaceans did not occur only on the beaches of Villanitos and La Mota, but in large

areas of the lagoon. IEO scientists found in a series of dives from September 25 a ‘massive mortality of species and populations of the lagoon bottoms greater than three to four metres,’ which represents 80 per cent of
the wetland. In other words, the Mar Menor was already a fish cemetery before the images and videos that were flashed round the world were taken. The environmental problems in
the Mar Menor have become of increasing concern to the local population. Recently 55,000 people joined a demonstration in Cartagena calling for urgent measures to stop agricultural runoff and other pollution.

Hopes are high as Poppy count gets underway THIS year the Poppy Appeal is aiming to raise over £50 million to help support serving and exserving members of the Armed Forces community and their families. To help reach that target, over 150,000 volunteers were out on the streets, markets and in shopping centres across the UK and many European countries including here in Spain. Although local branches have been busy raising funds for those ‘needy’ ex-servicemen and their dependants since the beginning of the year, their activities have increased dramatically in recent weeks as they set out on their final fundraising ‘efforts’ of the year with the ‘Poppy Appeal’ in the knowledge that all of the monies collected will be used to support cases here in Spain. Currently the members from 28 branches, 12 on the Costa del Sol, and the remainder from the areas that make up Spain
District North, predominantly the Costa Blanca, Calida and Almeria, have also been busy during recent weeks, collecting your thousands of donations. With poppies and collection boxes distributed to over 600 bars, restaurants and other locations across the region, the four local branches mobilised their ‘armies’ of volunteers, in midOctober. They were active at Alicante airport, as well as pounding the streets at local markets, supermarkets and shops, in addition to many dozens of other venues and collection outlets. Last year the branches in La Marina/Gran Alacant, Hondon Valley, Torrevieja and the Orihuela Costa, raised over €80,000, an amount which they will be hoping to surpass when totals are tallied up in the coming days. The appeal in Spain North was launched by District Chairman Don Cubbon and the mayor of Benidorm, Antonio Pérez,
on October 18, a little earlier than the UK. On the Orihuela Costa it was boosted by the presence of two Chelsea Pensioners, Wayne Campbell and Skippy Teasdale, who were collecting at La Zenia Boulevard and in the Plaza at Villamartin. Neither of the two venues have been used for some years, but the amounts collected in both locations suggest that they will, in future, be important additions to the annual list, as also will all Overseas Supermercados stores who were once again kind enough to allow collectors to sit inside their entrances. In some branches many of the poppy collection tins are still to be emptied and the monies counted, so the final figure for the District will not be released for some time, however the major Orihuela Costa and District count took place on Sunday at the Olympia Restaurant in Mil Palmeras. Artefact raiders arrested at site UNAUTHORISED people in possession of metal detectors have been fined after using them illegally at the archaeological site of Guardamar Castle. Local Police have fined two detectorists â‚Ź6,000 after they intended to find and steal objects from the area, which is currently being restored. Police surprised the people as they utilised the detectors on the lookout for artefacts to take home. Archaeological investigation has led to many valuable objects appearing in the area. Violent robbery POLICE have arrested a man for allegedly attempting to rob a kebab shop located in Puerto de Mazarron. It is reported that the alleged violent robber injured the owner of the restaurant during a struggle after breaking into the premises to steal the till. When the accused was searched, police discovered that he was concealing two kitchen knives on his person.

RECYCLING MATERIAL: Removed from street.
Mattresses marked THE council of Torrevieja has modified the garbage collection contract held by Acciona, the company t h a t re c y c l e s m a t tresses in the Ecoparque recycling centre, to mark the, now famous, waste removed f ro m t h e s t re e t w i t h coloured spray to ensure that they do not return to public areas.
The measure has been adopted after it was revealed that the cleaning services collected 9,063 mattresses from the street between June and September. The number has been reduced from 2,200 per month to about 1,500 in October. For each mattress transported from Accionato Ecoparque the council will pay â‚Ź18 of the municipal budget. The council are keen to point
out that this measure is to avoid any suspicion that the same mattress is collected several times from different parts of the town centre and is only a way of guaranteeing that the process is carried out properly and the material is recycled. There is not a single case in which it has been proven that the same mattress has been collected, dumped in the street and then returned to the recycling centre.

Shotgun accident ACCORDING to police sources, a 41-yearold Alcantarilla man died recently after accidentally shooting himself with his own shotgun in his home on the path of the Cerones. The body, which had received a shot in
the lower abdomen, was found by a friend of the deceased in a garden shed. It is not entirely clear what he was doing with the weapon, but National Police are convinced that it was nothing but an unfortunate and sad accident.

Walk the walk THE end of building work on Alfonso X Avenue in Murcia gives way to 50,000 metres of traffic-free space. With the second half of the project finished, the new pedestrian area is complete. The large space extends through the historical centre of the regional capital, crossing Belluga Square, Trapería Street and Santo
Cars on fire FORTY-ONE cars have been completely destroyed and nine others damaged by a fire at a depot on the Costa Blanca. Four fire engines and crews from Alicante City were called to the blaze in Rebolledo at 1.35am on Saturday. The storage facility was an open field site which held hundreds of cars ready for distribution. Upon arrival, a 15-strong firefighter force began to tackle the flames, which spread at high speed between the vehicles while Local Police set up a security perimeter. The firefighters were divided into several teams in order to attack the fire from different fronts simultaneously. After more than three hours of work, they managed to extinguish the fire using foam. No one was hurt in the incident. An investigation into the cause of the blaze has been launched.

Bilingual show THE Association of English Speakers of San Pedro del Pinatar present their new pantomime ‘Puss in Boots’ in the Casa de Cultura. The show is performed in both English and Spanish and involves local schoolchildren to help raise money for needy families in San Pedro del Pinatar. Show times are at 7pm on November 28 and 30 and on December 1 at 4 and 7pm. Tickets are just €4 and can be collected at Academia Galway, Bar Amigos or Mail Pinatar.
Flood prevention MAR DE CRISTAL residents have aired their frustration regarding the lack of a draining system in the reservoir to avoid flooding in the town, leading to urgent works to remedy the situation. The reservoir has been full since May and did not stop running as it lacked a drainpipe. A lorr y driver on the RM-15 in Murcia spotted a person tr ying to flag down vehicles last Friday. On stopping to see if he could help, he found out it was a woman in the midst of an anxiety attack. She told him that she had been assaulted and asked him to give her a lift - seeing her state he called for help instead. They waited for the arrival of police and medics. The latter gave her first aid before transferring her to the Virgin of the Arrixaca Hospital in Murcia. The victim is a 37year-old Spanish woman who explained that she is a sex worker and had been assaulted by a stranger who initially requested her services. She got into his car with him, but then the man turned violent. He raped her and then left her in the middle of the road before driving off. Since the victim has hardly any data to identify her attacker, police sources admit that the identification and subsequent arrest of this subject may be complicated.

Assaulted own mum A MAN has been arrested for assaulting his girlfriend and then his own mother in a Murcian street. The 40-year-old has been arrested by Murcia City’s Local police for the attack on November 13, that happened at 7.20pm in Calle Abenarabi Murcia. A patrol of the Special Group for Citizen Security (GESC) went to the scene after receiving an emergency call saying that a man was hitting a car with a baseball bat. Inside the vehicle, reports said, was a woman who was showered with broken glass when the assailant smashed the driver’s window. He then continued hitting the car with such force that he broke the bat. It was later found that the woman, who was taken to the Morales Meseguer hospital, was his girlfriend. Witnesses told police that during the incident the man was approached by his mother and he turned on her. Police arrived and started searching for the alleged perpetrator who was found soon after and arrested.

POLICE have broken up an Alicante-based gang dedicated to the distribution of fake €5 notes. Six people are under arrest, among them the suspected group leader, following the detection of numerous counterfeit bills in Madrid, the Valencian
Community, Cataluña, Andalucia and Portugal. Police said investigations were first launched in 2015 after registering an important increase in the number of fake notes in circulation, especially in Alicante Province, and that
there have been a number of operations since that time. Police also commented on the complexity of the investigations given that members of the public do not usually think to check whether €5 notes are genuine or not, hence they do not report incidents. As a result, the information on the dodgy cash stemmed from what was detected on the finance circuit. Different lines of police investigations led to the discovery of the falsified notes in various parts of Spain and over the border in Portugal. They also resulted in the identification of a number of individuals with police records for similar criminal activities. Once police had pinpointed the possible origin of the counterfeit money they carried out raids on two properties in Alicante City. In one officers found 526 fake €5 notes. Police said the success of the operation meant one of the oldest organisations specialising in fake cash circulation had been dismantled.

Pensioners struck by car IN Cartagena a 93-year-old man and a 63-year-old woman were hit by a car while crossing a pedestrian crossing on Calle Wssel de Guimbarda, at the height of Los Juncos Park. According to sources from the 112 single Emergency telephone, the two pedestrians were hit by a Ford Fiesta when they crossed the street through the zebra crossing. The old woman hit the windscreen, which shattered, and suffered an open head injury. She was transferred to Santa Lucia hospital. It is reported that the driver said that he was clueless and did not see the pedestrians.
Witnesses to the incident and residents of the area reported daily dangerous situations, also pointing out that Wednesdays are a day with a greater risk, due to the extra traffic generated by the weekly market celebration in the esplanade of the Cenit. The residents have demanded a larger police presence in the surrounding areas of the markets and schools. In March 2018, after an increase in the number of people injured on urban roads, the city council promised to implement a plan with different measures to strengthen traffic safety, such as increasing speed controls.

Fruity drugs smugglers POLICE have broken up a gang that smuggled marihuana to the Netherlands hidden in fruit and veg shipped from an Orihuela warehouse. Five Moroccan men have been arrested on drugs charges, with three of them being remanded in custody. Guardia Civil arrested two of the suspects when they
raided the warehouse to find 24.5 kilos of marihuana hidden in cases of pomegranates being loaded onto a lorry. The other three were arrested at their homes in the Costa Blanca municipalities of Cox and Callosa de Segura. An investigation into this case began in mid-October last, when after noticing suspicious movements, police

started a surveillance operation on the warehouse, which appeared to have a very low level of trade initially. Suddenly, there was an increase in the number of lorries leaving for various European countries, but always having an interim unloading point at a small premises located in a Dutch village. shipments, Guardia Civil found that several bags of marihuana had been transported hidden between four pallets of parsley, which allowed, two weeks later, the arrest of the five suspects.

The last 2,700 customers of the restaurant where the outbreak was found will receive their vaccines at San Antón medical centre. Alarmingly close to the bottom of the ladder compared to the rest of Europe when it comes to English proficiency. The international ranking was compiled by Education First, a company founded in Sweden in 1965 which publishes the index annually and was based on the results of 2.3 million exams in 100 countries. According to El País, Antonio Cabrales, a professor at University College London who has researched how English is learned in bilingual schools in Spain

Rebuilding the coast THE revamping of the Torrevieja coastline begins on November 25 with an ambitious project of regeneration of the beach of Los Locos that will continue for a decade. The first delivery of 12,000 cubic metres of sand, originally planned for the beginning of 2020, has been brought forward in view of the impact caused by the storm in September which left the central section of the beach with barely two metres of sand between the promenade and the sea, when a few years ago in the narrowest area there
were around 15 metres. The objective is to widen this central section of the beach by 20 metres, which has been gradually receding in recent years. They will use sand extracted from a Murcia quarry which is clearly a larger and denser granulate, that should withstand the impact of new storms with more guarantees. In 2017 a study of the dynamics of sea currents in this urban beach area was carried out to determine which could be the best option when regenerating the coastal space, with a budget of more than €65,000.

Anyone who has lived continuously in the UK between 1980 and 1996 (a minimum of one year) will not be able to donate blood in Spain due to the risk of transmitting mad cow disease. Similarly, there are restrictions if you have received a blood transfer in the UK. However, each region may have different rules about donation. Call the donation helpline on 935 573 500. If you are eligible, you can give blood at your local hospital, or via the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja) at one of their clinics, or in one of their mobile units. You can check dates and locations by visiting www.donarsangre.org. A donor card is not necessary to give blood. On the first visit you will have to provide DNI, NIE, passport or a driving licence. If you are already registered in the Blood Bank, you only need a donor card or a document with your name and surname. The process of blood donation takes just 10 minutes in which 450 ml are collected (equating to 10 per cent of the total blood circulation of an adult person). Despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain blood is through the generosity of the public. The blood is carefully screened for disease to make sure it is safe. After a tattoo, you must wait four months to be eligible to donate. After surgery, the exclusion period will depend on the type of intervention. After minor surgical procedures, you cannot donate blood for seven days or until you are fully recovered. After undergoing major surgery, you will not be able to donate blood for four months. The rarest blood type is AB, present in 1 per cent of Caucasians, according to research by the America Red Cross. Blood transfusions are carried out daily in Spanish hospitals with more than 6,200 patients being given them, of whom almost a quarter are fighting cancer and a similar figure receiving transfusions during or after surgery. Rising tides... A NEW report warns that the sea level along the coast of Murcia could rise 15 centimetres in less than 10 years. According to the Institute of Environmental Hydraulics of the University of Cantabria increased temperatures caused by climate change, could lead to sea level rises in the Murcia region of 55 centimetres by the end of the century in the worst-case scenario. Presenting the report Acting Minister for Ecological Transition Teresa Ribera warned of the “very important effects” this will have on Spanish coasts. Generally, Spanish coasts could see an average rise in sea levels of between 17 to 35 centimetres by 2028, while along the Costa Calida and parts of the Costa Blanca the projected range is 10 to 15 centimetres. By the end of the century levels in this part of the Mediterranean are projected to have risen

mental impacts” such as erosion of beaches in order to improve management and make more efficient use of the available resources. It includes projections of variables such as waves, tides, sea level and sea surface temperature along the coast. “We already know that there will be displacements of marine species, with a high risk of loss of wetlands and vulnerable areas,” said Ribera. She added it is necessary to plan now to ensure proper coastal management is put in place to deal with the environmental changes both on land and in the marine environment. Researcher Íñigo Losada, from the Institute, said that due to both temperature rises and changes in wave patterns, the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands, the Spanish Levant and the western façade of the Cantabrian Sea will be the areas where, “the most important changes” will take place.

Dog walkers attacked A MAN has been fined a total of €240 for attacking two dog walkers with a golf club. Murcia’s Provincial Court of Murcia has dismissed an appeal filed by the man after hearing about the assault in Sucina. The victims - a husband and wife - were walking their dog through an urbanisation when the convicted man accelerated his car at them, then braked at the last moment. He then got out and attacked them with the club, the court heard. In a written sentence the judges said that the incident was not worse because the woman gave him a push when she saw he was about to hit her. The court was told that the couple’s injuries took seven days to heal, although they did not ask for compensation.

Bringing bulls back
CONTROVERSIAL: Bullfighting enthusiasts want to build an arena. PROPOSED multipurpose arena in Cartagena attracts the interest of international investors. The Cartagena Bullfighting Forum seeks private capital to end 33 years without bullfights in the city. Chinese and Mexican investors have shown interest in the construction of the multipurpose arena. The search for private capital will continue in the upcoming months, with meetings taking place in hotels in Bilbao and France. The project requires an initial investment of â‚Ź1.7 million and proposes a building with
enough space for 3,000 bullfight spectators and 6,000 for other shows. It will stand in a 32,000 square metre plot next to Mandarache shopping centre. The Bullfighting Forum defends the controversial idea and members affirm that the ring would be beneficial for the city, indicating that 50 per cent of bullfight attendees in Murcia are from Cartagena. Cartagena’s Bullfighting Forum has also boosted their presence by hosting a conference dedicated to the breeding, feeding and development of the fighting bull.

Bus driver took cocaine A COACH driver from Cartagena who had 45 passengers aboard has been arrested after he tested positive for cocaine. Guardia Civil in Hellin (Albacete) say that the 58-year-old man had also failed to respect the statutory daily rest period. The police officers had flagged down the bus on the N-301 (Madrid-Cartagena) to perform a routine check. When they found he had not taken his statutory rest, they suspected he may have
been on illegal substances to keep himself awake, so they drug tested him. When he tested positive, the bus was taken to a nearby service area where it was immobilised. The 45 passengers then had to wait two hours until a replacement bus arrived. The bus driver was denounced for violations of the Transport Regulations, for not taking the required rest and for driving a vehicle with the presence of psychotropic substances in the body.

PRESCRIPTION REQUEST: Doctor threatened.
Violent patient NATIONAL POLICE officers in Murcia have arrested a 44-year-old male of Spanish nationality as the alleged perpetrator of a crime of coercion and threats to his family doctor. The patient went to the health centre without an appointment and, in a very altered state, demanded the prescription of medication that could only be prescribed by a specialist. It is reported that when the doctor refused to
arrange the prescription the patient flew into a rage. He adopted a violent attitude, uttering insults and serious threats and banged on the doctor’s desk. Once the complaint was filed, officers of the El Carmen District Police Station proceeded to locate, identify and subsequently arrest the accused. The court ordered that the patient must find a new doctor.

Supermarket burglar A MAN who allegedly burgled a house was stopped by police when they saw him wheeling his loot along the road in a supermarket trolley. National Police were patrolling the centre of Elche when they saw the man. He was unable to explain to them the origin of the household goods. As he was talking to the officers a woman came up and told police she had seen the man leaving her neighbour’s
house and put items into the cart. Police called the 091 co-ordination centre who confirmed they had received a report of a burglary from a nearby home. The description of the goods stolen matched that of the items in the man’s trolley, with later investigations confirming they were the stolen goods A 35-year-old Spaniard was arrested and has been placed at the disposal of the courts, while the recovered objects have been returned to their owner.

Angling for a fine POLICE have identified 120 people who were allegedly ‘poaching’ fish from the Canal de Estacio in Murcia. Now they face fines of between €301 and a whopping €60,000 - and all they were doing, police admit, was angling. Their mistake was to do it along the body of water that links the Mar Menor sea lagoon to the rest of the Mediterranean, which is classed as a protected area. The Guardia Civil of the region de Murcia and the Consejería de Agua, Agricultura, Ganadería y Medio Ambiente de la Comunidad Autónoma carried out a series of inspections over the course of a week. The anglers were targeted when the Guardia Civil engaged in an operation against illegal fishing detected videos on social media sites where many people appeared to be practising recreational fishing in this area. and Public Safety and Public Prosecutors units of the Guardia Civil, in collaboration with inspectors from the Fisheries Service of the A u t o n o m o u s C o m m u n i t y, carried out numerous controls to prevent such behaviour, as well as to identify the people who were practising it. The Guardia Civil found that, although these are private citizens, some of the catches could be destined for sale to businesses without the health controls needed for the marketing of fish. Police seized fishing gear and fish, which were made available to the Directorate General of Agricultural Production, Livestock and Environment. The fish has been destroyed as it could not be marked as suitable for human consumption. Due to the vulnerability of the marine species that transit through the Canal del Estacio, the Guardia Civil is keeping in place controls to enforce the fishing ban that exists in the area.

Over the years, EWN has organised an array of different events, celebrations and fundraisers for all different manner of causes. We want to highlight some of our biggest achievements together! We could never forget EWN’s own Benidorm Has Talent, when amazing Kayleigh Taylor won the €2,000 prize and EWN raised €15,000 for cancer charity AECC. Guests were surprised with a performance from X Factor star Rowetta, who amazed everyone with her vocals Age Concern is a wonderful charity that provides help and friendship for the older English-speaking community on the Costa del Sol. We loved organising a fun-filled Garden Party at Sohail Castle in Fuengirola, where live entertainment with Rowetta and a delicious buffet was enjoyed by all. This year, our EWN team - led by director Steven Euesden joined the charity at the top of the iconic Sunset Beach Hotel in Benalmadena and bravely abseiled all the way down! EWN has lent its support to MABS Cancer Support Group, backing their spring ball in April 2015, which raised €5,000. And when EWN owners Michel and Steven Euesden held a 10-year wedding blessing, they shunned gifts in favour of
donations to Cudeca. Each year, we support the Positively Pink Ball which annually raises tens of thousands of Euros for breast cancer screening. And last year, EWN was proud to get behind the second annual Oceana Grant A Wish Pink and Blue Ball which collected €16,000 for some exceptional causes. Over the years, we have formed a close bond with the Leighton family as we worked together to raise money for the Tomas Leighton Care Charity. Lovely Tomas suffers from cerebral palsy and epilepsy and needs the community’s helping hand. He can always count on our support! Always looking to give back to our readers, we dreamed up the fun idea of giving away a car! You heard right! In return, we wanted to know in what ways we could improve to better meet our readers’ needs. One lucky reader was gifted their very own €15,000 EWN car! In 2014, our readers also got the opportunity to nominate someone for our Make a Wish campaign. We teamed up with friends in the business community to give someone in need the most amazing prizes! Never forgetting little Leo who fought bravely against cancer. Our EWN family made some amazing donations towards proton treatment for Leo in the US and supported the family with kind messages and prayers. The Royal Wedding in 2018 saw parties all over the UK and we wanted to include our British Community in Spain in the festivities. EWN directors Michel and Steven Euesden had been invited to the British Embassy in Madrid to commemorate the occasion. But the Euesden couple always keep their EWN family at the forefront of their hearts. A senior member of staff represented the newspaper in Madrid, whilst Michel and Steven hosted a brilliant community party on the sunny Costa del Sol. And lastly, we would like to relive our recent Halloween Fundraiser. What an amazing event with people from all walks of live giving generously for the orphans in Malaga. Toys’R’Us bounces back THE friendly giraffe known as Geof frey will forever be associated with the Toys’R’Us business which went into terminal decline in the USA. Although the 16foot statue of Dr G Raffe, as he was originally known, has moved to a children’s hospital in New Jersey, the Spanish arm of the business has made a remark able recovery. It was purchased just over a year ago by a Portuguese investment fund and is now expecting to break even in 2019 with a turnover of €160 million.

The company plans to open at least five new stores every year and is updating stock in a number of its stores in order to offer a more ex perimental choice to customers as well as beefing up its online pres ence.
Other ideas include the sharing of buildings in out of town locations which it owns but which are too large for the business and also a possible franchise arrangement with new independent companies. Traditionally, it has always oper ated from large stores of up to 1,800 square metres, but it is also considering scaling new openings down to around 600 square metres full of the top selling toys. Another string to its bow is the Babies’R’Us brand, which it plans to expand within the Iberian market.
LEGALLY SPEAKING Can he extend his stay? I have what should be a simple question, but having trawled through dozens of websites and forums, consulted my lawyers, and talked to estate agents, I cannot get a straight answer. If I want to stay in Spain over the winter between 90 and 180 days (surely I am not the only one in this po sition), can I apply for an extension allowing me to stay for longer than 90 days without being compelled to apply for a residence permit? There is provision for a legal extension but the requirements are very strict. If you are being treated in the hospital for severe injuries, the exten sion will be granted. Otherwise not. Tax payers unhappy ACCORDING to the Partido Popu lar Financial Head of the Madrid Community, Javier Fernández Lasquetty, the election of a PSOE government could cost taxpayers in the area some €5.9 billion. The policy put forward by act ing Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez calls for a harmonisation of taxes across Spain in the event that he is returned with a working major ity. Shareholders lose action A DISSATISFIED group of 5,803 former Lloyds TSB shareholders have lost a multimillionpound action against the bank over its purchase of HBOS in 2009. They argued in court that the bank made the wrong move in taking over ri val HBOS as it was laden down with bad debts and unrecoverable mortgages.
In addition, they believed that infor mation concerning more than £35 bil lion (€38 billion) of emergency financial assistance from the Bank of England and Lloyds was withheld from share holders which led to the virtual t a k e o v e r o f L l o y d s b y t h e B r i t i s h g o v ernment.

Free internet for UK households LABOUR leader Jeremy Corbyn has announced that if his party wins the General Election, he will take action to nationalise the fixedline internet network owned by BT. This would then allow high quali ty broadband to be given free of charge to all of those in the UK who have internet access and would save the average household about £30 (€35) a month in rental fees. Group bedding down SOUTH AFRICAN retailer Steinhoff has confirmed that it is to sell its loss-making UK furniture business Blue Group to European retailer Alteri Investors. Although no details of the val-
ue of the sale have been released, it is known that Blue Group which owns UK-based furniture companies Harveys Furniture and Bensons for Beds has an annual turnover of some £500
million (€550 million). The business operates 269 stores in the UK as well as four manufacturing sites and five distribution centres which between them employ 2,700 staff.

This enterprise was aimed at sup plying very high speed connections in northern England to some 60,000 households initially, with the plan to expand this to take in some three mil lion private customers. Whilst Talk Talk has so far invest ed around £60 million (€69 million) in developing this project, other suppliers have also been putting money into their own alternatives and any new Labour government would have to negotiate with them all.

Plenty more worms LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT IN my humble opinion Clinton was a far better liar than Prince Andrew. Although the ex-president was actually telling more porkies than Pinocchio, his statement that he ‘never had sexual intercourse with that woman’ did appear to be somewhat sincere and believable. By contrast Prince Andrews’s televised attempt at damage limitation was an utter disaster. Would you ever consider buying a used car from this man? Personally I would rather deal with Arthur Daley! Some of his denials were quite bizarre. When asked about his young accuser’s accusa tions of him ‘sweating heavily’ he said that from his involvement in the Falkland’s war he had contract ed a condition that meant he didn’t sweat! I looked this up. This malady is known as Anhidrosis and is an extremely serious condition that can be fatal. It needs special treatment and medical expertise in cluding carrying water spray to irrigate the body. Ever seen him having a quick spray over the years? No? Nor me. The truth is, the whole exercise stinks of the usual establishment´s connivance to

protect the backsides of the privileged and aristoc racy at any price. As I have often stated in this col umn, in this respect they will stop at nothing. You al so can’t help ironically drawing parallels between this latest saga and the Duke of Edinburgh’s alleged involvement in the Christine Keeler affair of the 60’s. The main perpetrator of those particular sexu
al shenanigans was Stephen Ward. Ward was also arrested and put on trial. When it was apparent the trial was going against him, he in credulously asked was ‘nobody going to step for ward and help him’? When it appeared they weren’t, he became a loose cannon and the follow ing day could easily have blown the whistle on them
all. That night, surprise surprise, he mysteriously ‘committed suicide!’ Well I can tell you, in the pic tures that emerged of him being rushed out of his apartment on a stretcher there was not a medic in sight. He was in fact surrounded by ‘men in suits’ speedily hustling him into the ambulance. This was of course the reason Christine Keeler went quiet, she was obviously petrified that she too could ‘unexpectedly commit suicide.’ All sound a bit familiar, doesn’t it? No, I’m afraid none of this dam age limitation is happening by chance. This is the result of a typical ongoing establish ment conspiracy. The main character in the investi gation ‘commits suicide.’ The Prince goes on televi sion to categorically deny any involvement and then the best lawyers money can buy go into court and endeavour to destroy those who have made the ac cusations. Unfortunately, because he totally screwed up, the prosecution must be rubbing their hands at the veritable colander of holes they can pick in his interpretation of the events. My guess is his lawyers will now never dare risk him actually appearing on the witness stand. One thing is for sure, there are plenty more worms to appear from this particular can before they do final ly manage to screw the lid down. If they ever do! Keep the faith. And I thought the USA had cornered the market in snowflakes! Some hypersensitive delegates at a gender conference at Roehampton University were issued with red, yel low and green traffic lights on their lanyards to indicate wordlessly their preparedness or otherwise to engage in conversation about the complex

As to what should be done about renaming Shakespeare’s play ‘Two Gentlemen of Verona,’ Equity is silent, however! Then you may have considered bidding for a bottle of whisky at the recent auction held in London at Sotheby’s the auctioneers. A world record bid was achieved when The Macallan 60 yearold 1926 soared to an eyewatering £1,452,000. This whisky some say is the ‘holy grail’ of whiskies was the star of more than 450 bottles of Scotch amassed by a private American collector over a 20year period. All of the lots in the auction sold, no surprise there if you are a whisky drinker, though these collections are col lected as investments or simple obsessions; not drunk. Seems a pity. However, there are many shops in London and they are all in full seasonal swing right now. Of course New Bond Street, the home of Sothe by’s is one of the most significant of shopping streets in the world. Rumour has it [these shops are very discreet] that one fabulous and frenetic shopping week saw £2 billion spent. The cast of brands and shops is iconic. Expensive? Of course not. Every piece of shopping is affordable though only to a select minority. Nearby are more streets lined with tempting shops. Hordes of shoppers from across the plan et enjoy the Christmas lights which are now blaz ing overhead in the early dusk as the throng

Exquisite Tea Pot and Set, yours for only £5,000 at Fortnum & Mason. Lot 160 at Sotheby’s auction, The Macallan Fine & Rare 60-year-old 1926 sold for £1,452,000. threads their individual paths to their favoured shops. Many of the shops are specialists; think toys and Hamleys of Regent Street springs to mind. An emporium for children or for adults that do not wish to grow up, most men fill that category, though I have seen some ladies swoon
over the vast array of teddy bears. I do head for a particular shop each year and that shop is Fort num & Mason of Piccadilly. Their windows are decked and decorated each year with tableau. I will not spoil the surprise if you are heading to Piccadilly any time soon as you will see for yourself the crowds on the pavement jostling for a peek. Yes, there are other department stores however none is like Fortnum & Mason. Each is charismatic in its own unique way and draw
hordes of loyal shoppers from around the world each year. However for me the biscuits at Fortnum cannot be equalled, indeed I know a man who would do serious damage for a jar of their lemon curd. Christmas just would not be the same with out a tin of Fortnum & Mason biscuits. Of course Fortnum’s food hall is world famous and busy throughout the year; at Christmas their wicker hampers stuffed with exquisite delica cies are shipped to dearest friends and family through out the world. Go be yond the food hall and you will find that the shop is spread over six floors with choice ideas and services , restaurants and even a wine bar. Specialist depart ments curated and devoted to babies and home entertainment as well as fragrances and the essentials for the man or woman in your life. This shop being Fortnum’s tea is big; quite a proportion of the floor space is devoted to tea.Not only in the food halls but also elsewhere. In among the crockery I came across a vast selec tion of tea pots illustrating the Evolution of the Tea Pot as well as all the paraphernalia to do with tea. Inevitably when you have the most ex quisite tea leaf to hand you clearly need an ex quisite tea pot. Yours for a mere £5,000. Nick Horne, London, England

ON THE STREETS Dear Editor I AM writing in response to the Our View section in last week’s paper. You spoke about homelessness and how it is getting worse in Spain. My wife and I live in Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol and we are getting quite wor ried about the amount of homeless people on the streets. It’s getting to the point that going to the supermarket is a problem. They camp outside and continuously ask for money. Whilst I can empathise with their situation, it gets quite intimidating when they shout and have scuffles between them. My wife doesn’t go to certain places on her own any more. I think we need to bring this issue to our town halls and really give it some impor tance. What can we all do to get this sorted? We need to get these people off the street for their safety and ours. Animal cruelty Hello Hola I JUST read the article on animal cruelty in Paloma Park in Benalmadena from Octo ber and wanted to add that during my holiday in July I also witnessed teenagers terrorising the animals, chasing them and trying the catch them. I was very up set by this and it altered how I felt about one of my favourite parts of Benalmade na. I really want as many people involved with the park like the staff running it to be aware and to do something about it. I know resources will be tight but as a place that people visit often as a family and with children to enjoy the nature and animals this is the last disturbing thing you want to witness and you want to feel as if the animals are being re spected and their welfare needs upheld. I understand the don key handlers need to make a living but it is an outdated part of the town culture like the bullring which was put to better use. I see some have carriages which are slight ly better but maybe if they are just a tourist

BLACK FRIDAY has rolled back around and is planned for November 29 this year. Retailers worldwide have spent the last month reminding shoppers about the incoming discounts and bargains. But where did the shopping madness start? The term refers informally to the Friday following Thanksgiving Day in the United States and marks the start of America’s Christmas shopping. Every year, the shopping frenzy has increased and retailers open earlier and earlier to welcome the masses. Since 2006, there have been 12 reported deaths and 117 injuries in the US. Europe has now seen the arrival of the legendary Friday. As with most things, the experience hasn’t reached the excessiveness or extravagance of our neighbours across the pond. Shops have simply welcomed the new tradition as an opportunity to get the Christmas season underway and each year festivities seem to start at an earlier date. There is no doubt that Black Friday has infiltrated and greatly impacts buying trends. Consumers are getting into the habit of waiting until Black Friday sales to buy their selected items and some choose to get an early start on present buying. Could the new tradition mean the end of last-minute Christmas shopping? Following in the same footsteps, technological companies have now created Cyber Monday for their tech products and it will be on November 2.

Dance yourself healthy ENGAGING with the arts can be beneficial for both mental and physical health. This is a key conclusion of a new report from the WHO Re gional Office for Europe analysing the evidence from over 900 global publications the most comprehensive re view of evidence on arts and health to date. “Bringing art into peo ple’s lives through activities including dancing, singing, and going to museums and concerts offers an added dimension to how we can improve physical and mental health,” says Dr Piroska Östlin, WHO Regional Director for Europe a.i. “The examples cited in this ground breaking WHO report show ways in which the arts can tackle ‘wicked’ or complex health challenges such as diabetes, obe sity and mental ill health. They consider health and wellbeing in a broader societal and communi ty context, and offer solutions that common medical practice has so far been unable to address effectively,” Dr Östlin explains. The report reviews arts ac

the side effects of cancer treat ment, including drowsi ness, lack of appetite, short ness of breath and nausea; *Arts activities in emer gency settings, including music, crafts and clowning, have been found to reduce anxiety, pain and blood pres sure, particularly for children but also for their parents; and *Dance has been found re peatedly to provide clinically meaningful improvements in motor scores for people with Parkinson’s disease. The report highlights that some arts interventions not only produce good results, but can al so be more costeffective than more standard biomedical treat ments. They can combine multi ple healthpromoting factors at once (such as physical activity and mental health support) and have a low risk of negative out comes. Several countries are now looking to arts and social pre scribing schemes, whereby pri marycare doctors can refer their patients to arts activities.

Scientists have warned that this dis ruption increases the risks of cancer and other illnesses later in life. Researchers at the Univer sity of California, Berkeley, (USA) focused their study on teenage girls as they ‘use more personal care products per day than the average adult woman.’ For three days, the study’s

An in crease in the use of electronic devices such as mo bile phones and tablets has increased the number o f t r a u m a t o l o g y c o n s u l t a t i o n s d u e t o n e u r o m u s cularskeletal injuries, according to Doctor Alfon so Cort, Traumatologist at Quirónsalud Hospitals in Alicante and Torrevieja. According to recent studies, each of us spends an average of fiveandahalf hours connected to our mobile phones and computers, which explains the appearance of socalled technological injuries, increasingly at younger ages. Among the most common injuries, we can in clude De Quervain’s tendonitis of the thumb, carpal tunnel syndrome, and epicondylitis or ten
nis elbow, due to the use of the mouse in an inad equate position or repetitive movements. “These pathologies have their origin in the repe tition of the same movements with our hands and fingers for long periods of time, which causes in flammation of the tendons and nerves,” states Doctor Cort. “These injuries,” indicates the traumatologist, “start to manifest as a constant tingling on the hands, especially at night, accompanied by muscle pain in the upper limb.” The neck and back are two other areas that are significantly affected by the use of mobiles and tablets, due to the posture we adopt, both stand ing and seated, when using these electronic de
vices. “The most common injury,” says Doctor Fe lipe Garibo, Specialist in the Spine Unit of the Traumatology Service at Hospital Quirónsalud Va lencia, “is cervicalgia, which manifests initially with pain, tension and overload in the region of the neck and shoulders, caused by muscle over load from continued use of mobile devices, be cause we bend our head for continuous periods of time.” To avoid these injuries, Doctor Garibo recom mends reducing the amount of time we use these devices, holding them at eye level to avoid bend ing our heads, using both thumbs and both hands when writing texts, and performing exercises to improve the cervical muscles.

Autumn is now here AS summer is now over, it is that time to start thinking of red wine and winter food. So I thought I would share my late mother’s recipe for what she called shepherds pie all her life, though as it is made with beef, these days we would have to be correct and call it cottage pie. Yes, you say, what an ordinary humdrum dish. Except you might not think so if you read on…. It starts with standard ingredients of minced beef and chopped onions. First, you fry the mince until it just turns brown. You are getting rid of the fat. Seriously buy the best mince beef you can afford. The least fat the better. Drain the fat off. Then into your baking dish go the mince and the onions. Now add a layer of wellchopped cabbage. Generously sprinkle on some Worcester shire sauce. Finally add a can of Guinness. Put in the oven on a medium heat covering the mixture with foil. Take out every half an hour and stir. It should reduce but not go dry. The potatoes are next. Peel, half and quarter, and boil. When ready, test if they fall off a knife easily, then put in a bowl for mashing. Here are three topping ideas: Type 1: add generous dollops of mayonnaise
until the mashing gives a good heavy smooth consistency. No lumps please! Add salt and pepper and then the potato is ready for spreading. Type 2: add parmesan cheese to the process, best finely grated but can be flakes. If you use flakes spread generously and evenly. Type 3: add horseradish to the mash potato mayonnaise mix, goes especially well com bined with the parmesan cheese. If you need to pause the dish to get it ready for a specific time, do so at this stage and hold it back out of the oven. The last stage takes around 2030 minutes. When the mince has reduced, but is still moist with some liquid still showing on the bot tom of the dish, add dollops of mash potato and spread with a fork. Then put back in the oven without foil, at the top to just cause a brown colour to take hold of the potato on the crest of the pattern left by spreading with the fork. Put the bottle of Worcestershire sauce on the table in case anyone wants a topup. I usu ally serve with peas or a vegetable mix. Left overs can be frozen successfully in portions for another time. Now serve with a nice hearty Tinto Rioja or Ribuero del Duero. Enjoy! Thanks Mum! John Le Sueur

Tesla in Berlin ELECTRIC vehicle pioneer Tesla is set to build its first European facto ry and design facility in Berlin in a move to further boost its reputa tion for reliability and sporting prowess. Tesla’s chief executive, Elon Musk, made the announcement at a Germany’s Golden Steering Awards ceremony, stating that European ‘Gigafactory’ would make batteries, powertrains and vehicles starting with its Model Y SUV. Musk cited risks surrounding the UK’s exit from the EU for his deci sion, “Brexit [uncertainty] made it too risky to put a Gigafactory in the UK.” Tesla will be taking on Germany’s own BMW, Mercedes and Volkswa

Showing solidarity SOME 14,000 fans packed the stands at Cartagena to show their support and apprecia tion for Barcelona as the Cata lan giants of the game played a ‘solidarity match’ against the local team. A party atmosphere pre vailed as Cartagena and Barca played out a game to raise funds for victims of the ‘gota fria’ storm that caused huge destruction across large swathes of Spain’s Costa Blan ca and Costa Calida in Sep tember. Although shorn of its biggest names, many of whom were on international duty, Barca still managed to include six first teamers in their squad Piqué, Dembèlè, Sergi Roberto, Neto, Junior Firpo and Carles Aleñá. HAMILTON APOLOGISES LEWIS HAMILTON apologised to driver Alex Albon after the world champion accepted full responsibility for their late crash in Brazil. Hamilton, who was running behind Albon after he stopped for a third time under a late safety car, went for an overtake pass on the Londonborn Red Bull driver for second place with just two laps left. But the Mercedes driver crashed into the side of Albon, spinning the Red Bull man around.
