The left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE), the conservative Partido Popular (PP) and the far-right Vox all gained two seats in the Congress of Deputies. In terms of vote share however, it was PSOE which just pipped the other two parties to victory. The Socialists polled 88,425 votes in Almeria, representing 29.43 per cent of the total. This was pretty much the same result for PSOE as in the spring general election. However, the Almeria results reflect the national picture of a significant shift to the right this time. Vox did better than PP with 26.75 per cent, or 80,397 votes overall. This was a sizeable leap up from the 16.32 per cent, or 62,648, of Almerians who voted for the party on April 28. The result gave Vox one more deputy than before and established it as the province’s second most important political force. PP got 77,751 provincial votes (25.87 per cent), a notable improvement on the 73,952 the party won six and

dadanos in Almeria. It gained 8.02 a half months ago. The centrist Ciudadanos had a bad night. The party lost its one Almeria deputy after getting just 7.54 per cent with 22,645 votes. This was a massive drop from its 18.82 per cent share last time, when it won 56,268 votes. The leftist Unidas Podemos (UP) remains without provincial representation in the national parliament, although the party did at least do better than Ciu-
per cent of the votes cast, or 24,089. This was just slightly less than in April.
In the provincial vote for the Senate, PP and PSOE gain two members apiece. Electorate turnout in the province for what was the fourth general election in four years was 65.88 per cent.

IT was a sad ending for a beak whale which beached on an Almerimar beach early on Monday morning. Local Police and members of the Equinac marine life rescue association went to try and help the five-metre long female following an alert from El Ejido municipal cleaning service personnel. The creature was still alive when they got there, but according to Equinac it was badly injured and suffering, leaving no option but to put it down. The local council had to get in a crane to be able to move the dead whale to Equinac’s Almerimar centre for an autopsy. In accordance with the established protocol on the species this has to be carried out by experts, who are based in the Canary Islands. Posting on Facebook, Equinac commented that when a lone cetacean of this size beaches it is because it is sick or suffering.

Hash smuggler held GUARDIA CIVIL at Almeria port intercepted a man carrying nearly 1.2 kilos of hash hidden among his clothing and inside his body. Officers pulled over the 47-year-old from Cartagena, who was reportedly looking nervous and sweaty, when a drug-detection dog picked him out during a routine check
on passengers disembarking from a ferry which came in from Nador in Morocco. When they frisked him the Guardia found 132 lumps of hash among his clothes. Suspecting he could have more literally inside him, they had him X-rayed, which revealed a further 23 lumps of the drug in his system.

ALMERIA City is keen to get a slice of the British tourist market. City mayor Ramon Fernandez-Pachecho and City Promotion councillor Carlos Sanchez were at the World Travel Market trade fair in London last week to promote the provincial capital as an enticing holiday destination to the Brits. As it stands the UK accounts for the greatest number of international passengers flying to Almeria, but generally the British live or holiday in other parts of the province. During their time at the London show the council representatives met with tour operators, and hotel companies with a view to highlighting the many attractions of Almeria City. “Tourism is synonymous with wealth and employment,” Fernandez-Pacheco commented. “We are lucky that our city has identity, cul-
ture, heritage, impressive beaches and an enviable climate all year,” the mayor added. He also pointed out Almeria is this year’s national gastronomy capital. The mayor made specific reference to a meeting with a representative of tour operator Jet 2, revealing they had already had talks after the collapse of Thomas Cook. “We are working on a commercial action for January, Feburary and March, months when reservations are made, to attract the British market from April to October,” the mayor said. “We had been looking at this in September and now we are advancing on this.” Fernandez-Pacheco also said the city authority was “making every effort to also extend flight destinations. There are currently eight direct connections between Almeria and UK airports.

Four hurt FOUR people suffered injuries in a traffic accident in Los Gallardos involving a vehicle for transporting people with a disability, the Emergencies 112 service reported. Three women aged 42, 79 and 76 and an 84-year-old man were transferred to the HuercalOvera hospital.
More ships A TOTAL of 1,661 ships passed through Almeria and Carboneras ports in the first nine months of the year, 6.2 per cent more than last year, the Almeria Port Authority reported. Between them the ships carried a total of 4.3 million tonnes of merchandise.

One of the most dangerous walkways PERCHED upon the walls of a frighteningly narrow gorge in the province of Malaga is a walkway called ‘El Caminito del Rey.’ The King’s Pathway is located in El Chorro lake district and is famous for its scary 100-metre drop. Initially, the walkway was built for workers at the hydroelectric power plant at Chorro Falls. They used the path to cross between the two sides of the gorge and transport materials. In
1921, King Alfonso XIII crossed the bridge for the inauguration of the Guadalorce dam. From that moment onwards, the pathway received its iconic name. El Caminito del Rey has been known as the ‘world’s most dangerous walkway’ after five people fell to their deaths between 1999 and 2000. Enthusiastic climbers would try and traverse the perilous path, but many sections of concrete were collapsed, with only narrow steel beams for support.
Croc skin bag trouble AN Almeria woman’s attempts to sell items made from animal skin and ivory online landed her in legal trouble. An Almeria court has imposed a fine of €4 a day for eight months for breaking wildlife trade laws. The court also banned her from hunting or fishing for two years and ordered her to pay the legal costs of the case. According to reports the woman advertised for buyers for a second-hand crocodile skin suitcase and an elephant ivory cross on a number of internet portals without the requisite Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora certificates. Also reportedly among the items of clothing and objects she was hoping to sell were a baby seal skin hat and a mink fur jacket.

Following the inevitable accidents, the local government closed both entrances. For a decade, the gangway remained closed due to disrepair. But after four years of renovations and a €9 million budget, the walkway reopened to the public in 2015. Currently, the King’s Pathway is an emblematic tourist attraction and tickets are mostly sold out. Visitors can walk 2.9 kilometres along the side of the stunning gorge and observe the walkway’s history in the museum.
Pervert pensioner under arrest A 79-YEAR-OLD pensioner is under arrest for exposing himself in front of small children in Berja. Guardia Civil opened an investigation into the old man after a teacher reported she had regularly spotted him wandering around the playground area. She became suspicious because the pensioner appeared so often and always at the time the youngsters were playing outside. A few days later she realised his behaviour around the children was distinctly lecherous and then saw him touch his genitals and start to masturbate. When the teacher rounded on him he just carried on, so she hastened the children indoors and immediately called the Guardia, at which point he made off. Witness statements pointed investigators in the direction of Berja local ACS and his subsequent detention. According to the Guardia the 79-year-old has an extensive record for indecent exposure in front of minors.

NEW AGE POLITICS OCTOBER 26 officially marked four years of political limbo for Spain. Starting in autumn of 2015 when Mariano Rajoy called for elections, a consolidated government hasn’t been formed since. Two general elections and a vote of no confidence later, meant Spaniards would have to visit the ballot boxes once again. Turbulence and disorientation reigned in the months running up to November 10, with parties desperately trying to strengthen their standing.

The ghost of a Left-wing coalition will haunt Pedro Sánchez and Pablo Iglesias - leader of Unidas Podemos - who weren’t able to reach an agreement over the summer. Sunday’s election has seen their votes plummet and their options grow slimmer. General participation went down all over the country, with citizens having grown weary of the legislative instability. It was notable that in areas of high agricultural activity and greenhouses, Vox received considerable support. Algeciras, Estepona, Mazarrón, Cartagena and Torre Pacheco are some of the areas where Vox received a generous backing. Going forward, options are limited and negotiations will be complex. The simple days of bipartisanship are a thing of the past and now Spain will have to contend with coalitions and the new age of politics. The blockage continues, but there is maybe one advantage: it will be hard to force yet another election.
Hell’s Angels drama A SERIES inspired by the Hell’s Angels is due to start shooting in Almeria this month. Marked - The Unforgiven is an adaptation of the novel by former president of the Californiabased Hell’s Angels Ventura, George Christie, who plays one of the lead characters. Almeria has the role of the base of the fictitious Jimenez cartel, sworn enemies of the Marked The Unforgiven Motorcycle Club. Scenes will be shot in the Cabo de Gata Natural Park and Tabernas. Pointing out that Almeria is dubbed the ‘Hollywood of Spain’ thanks to the ‘iconic’ Clint Eastwood Spaghetti Westerns made in the
province and to shoots of recent major productions such as Game of Thrones, Wanda-Halcyon Television executive Maria Jose Morales described the province as “a favourite for filming.” He commented, “The dramatic backdrop of rugged landscapes, vast unspoiled sandy beaches, impressive fortresses and yearround sunshine make Almeria a director’s dream and an ideal setting to enhance the overall aesthetic and the viewer experience of productions such as Marked - The Unforgiven.

However, further confusion follows the general elections after a very divided vote. The repeat national election was meant to break the deadlock, but has only managed to block the political sphere even more. The third elections have been a fiasco for the left, that could have easily avoided them by joining forces. Far from reinforcing acting government PSOE, the results have boosted right-wing party PP and meant the rise of far-right party Vox. Pedro Sánchez - acting president has won the elections a second time, but will find forming government an even harder task than back in April. His main allies, Unidas Podemos, have gone from 45 seats to 35 and new party Más País has only managed three seats. PP has gone from 66 seats to a healthy 88 and Vox has increased from 24 to 52, in a big breakthrough for the far-right. PSOE had faced the elections with confidence, but has instead lost three seats. Results for Ciudadanos have seen the party sink from 57 to a measly 10 seats. Their leader, Albert Rivera, shocked his party with a swift resignation following the news. Until a year ago, Spain was the only European country without a xenophobic

atively modest beginnings. Years ago the Dames met at a member’s home to sing carols and enjoy wine and mince pies, but as membership grew they needed a new venue. They approached Mojacar Council, and the local authority was
happy to offer the multi-uses centre. A larger venue allowed the Dames to open up the occasion to the public and include a fair. Today it is the biggest fundraiser in the group’s calendar. The Dames take advantage of the event to present cheques to its chosen charities, and this year they will give
no less than €1,000 each to MACS, Asprodalba and Stepping Stones. The Dames in Spain has a history going back nearly 35 years. It was a lady called Dorothy Dobson who came up with idea for the group in 1985 with the aim of promoting friendship, an understanding of living in Spain and to help local charities. Among the first causes the Dames helped were the Red Cross and the Mojacar church floor restoration fund. The Dames in Mojacar are the original Dames in Spain, but there are now branches in Turre and Huercal-Overa. They welcome all women as members, whether residents or not. There is an annual subscription, but you can go along as a guest for four meetings which are held at Sensations in Mojacar Playa on the third Monday of the month unless otherwise indicated.

HORRIFYING: Divers found all manner of rubbish, including 720 plastic bottles and 120 bags.
Seabed clean-up nets staggering haul SCUBA divers recovered a staggering 416 kilos of rubbish from the seabed at Aguadulce port in just one morning. Nearly 40 divers took part in what was the 13th edition of the seabed clean-up initiative organised by the Buceo Aquatours dive centre. They worked in four groups accompanied by three dive instructors. The first group went down at 8.30am and came up at 9pm. The groups then did stints of around 45 minutes before a well-earned late lunch.
Back on land the divers set about sorting the rubbish, which Roquetas de Mar Council said was in such a bad state it could not be recycled. In all the divers picked off the sea bottom 720 plastic bottles, 120 bags, part of a fishing net, metres of fishing line, silicon bait, sections of fishing line, plastic reels, traps, a mobile phone, clothing and aluminium wrapping. They covered an area of 15,000 metres and reported there was still a heck of a lot more rubbish down there. “We believe that a lot of this rubbish is due to the
large number of people who use this area for fishing, along with that which is carried by the wind and currents,” the dive school commented. “We believe it would be a good idea to put up signs which indicate not to throw anything into the sea, containers or similar.” The dive school also suggested that in order to evaluate how much rubbish and waste accumulates in a given area of the seabed it would be a good idea to mark out a specific zone and clean it up completely to see how it is looking a year later.
Halloween yobs POLICE caught up with a group of 19 young yobs responsible for violent muggings and damaging cars in Almeria City in the early hours of Halloween. Police said they had detained five of the gang members, but the investigation remains open and more arrests could follow. A member of the public called 091 after witnessing the teenagers’ attack on a youngster to try and steal anything of value he was carrying, reporting one of the aggressors was armed with a baseball bat. Just minutes earlier the police had been alerted to a bunch of youths damaging several vehicles parked in Calle Granada.
Patrols tracked down the mob of 15 to 19year-olds in a city centre car park. Witnesses and victims of the muggings, some of whom suffered injuries, identified five of them. Stolen items were returned to their rightful owners. Police said two of the detainees, J M R L and C S P, both 18, are being held in prison accused of robbery with violence and resisting arrest. Police are looking into further reports of muggings with violence on the night, when they said the gang took advantage of the anonymity and confusion created by the Halloween costumes and the party atmosphere.

Sacked worker detained for robbing bar
SUSPICIOUS: The Guardia concluded someone got into the bar using a key. A SACKED employee is under arrest on suspicion of breaking into and robbing the Nijar bar where he used to work. Guardia Civil detained 47-year-old M H for forcing open the establishment’s slot machine and cigarette dispenser and taking tobacco and cash. Investigating officers noted the premises’ door had not been forced, suggesting someone got in using a key. Interviews with the bar owner revealed he had allegedly had problems with a former worker. According to reports, after terminating his job contract he subsequently reported him for not paying back money he had been loaned and for failing to return the bar entry keys. The suspect claimed he had been in Almeria City on the day of the break-in, but admitted there was no love lost between him and the bar owner. The Guardia said he kept changing his account and contradicting himself, and on the basis of their investigations they charged the 47-year-old.

Immigrant teenage mugger in trouble
A YOUNG Moroccan immigrant is in trouble with the police, who have charged him with two violent attempted muggings of women in El Ejido. The 17-year-old, who is in Spain without an accompanying adult, is suspected of two attacks within minutes of each other, leaving both victims with minor injuries. Police reported one of the woman was walking home after shopping at about 10pm at night when she was surprised by a young assailant brandishing a knife with a 19-centimetre long blade. He demanded she hand over cash and her mobile. When she refused he started to punch and kick her while grabbing on to her hair. Her screams for help scared him into letting her go and he ran off. A police patrol was on the scene almost immediately and caught up with and detained the suspect, although after he put up some resistance. He threatened the officers with the knife. Once back at El Ejido police station,

A woman reported she had been surprised by a youth with a knife who tried to get her to give him the cash and valuables she had on her. She put up a
resistance and the attacker cut her on the forearm and punched her on the nose. The 17-year-old had been living in the province under the care of the Junta de Andalucia’s Protection Service for Minors.
Gambling with fake cash A 29-YEAR-OLD Almeria man has accepted a two-year prison sentence for gambling with counterfeit notes in a Roquetas de Mar games hall, press reported.
The gambler had been facing an 11year sentence and a fine of €12,500 plus the amount of the fake money for counterfeiting cash, He was reportedly caught in May
2018 playing on roulette machines with 104 €20 notes, knowing that the cash was a forgery given that the bills lacked the security characteristics proving their authenticity.

There was an original suggestion of a pact with the Conservatives that the Brexit Party would not contest certain key seats and although the pact never saw the light of day, he has decided that no Brexit candidate will stand in 317 seats previously won by the Conservatives in THERE is a significant side effect from the decision by Nigel Farage to stop Brexit party candidates from standing against the Conservatives in 317 constituencies and that is anger. CUEVAS DEL ALMANZORA has a packed agenda for the next few weeks to mark International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on the 25th. Events include a night walk, benches with awareness-raising messages and 76 workshops in local schools, all under the slogans ‘Cuevas says no to gender violence’ and ‘For a violencefree life.’ Cuevas mayor Antonio Fernandez and Equality councillor Melchora Caparros officially presented the events programme, which was put together by the local council with the support of funds coming under the Equality Ministry State Pact. They explained the night walk on November 23 is a new event. Participants will set off from the Marques de Los Velez castle at 7pm on a four-kilometre route in what will be a symbolic representation of walking towards a more equal society which eradi-

are adapted to different age groups, will be aimed at educating the younger generation about rejecting any kind of genderbased mistreatment and discrimination. On the 25th an anti-genderbased violence manifesto will be read out in the Plaza de la Constitucion next to the town hall at 12 midday, and the day after there will be a CMIM Municipal Women’s Information Centre stand at the Cuevas weekly market. “Unfortunately gender violence remains a social scourge which brings dreams, hopes, and often the lives of many women, to an end,” the Equality councillor commented. Caparros pointed out that some 1,000 women have died at the hands of their partners or former partners in Spain since records began, “and today we continue lamenting the loss of human lives due to this problem.” She said Cuevas Council worked throughout the year in
collaboration with other social collectives to address the issue, stressing, “we say no to gender violence, and we do it by not just saying so, but also by acting, with activities which unite us in this objective of walking towards a better society. “We also do it through education, with consciousness-raising about gender violence among the young population, and above all, by installing in our sons and daughters values of respect which eradicate sexist behaviour. We are also informing and raising awareness on our streets.” Added the mayor, “We have to keep working on this line, in involving society, explaining to and making aware our young people, reporting mistreatment and helping the victims. Fernandez underlined the council’s commitment to “equality and the fight against any kind of sexist aggression,” to create “a fairer and more equal municipality.”

A LOCAL expat has joined forces with the surgeon who saved her life to write a novel to help raise funds for the Royal British Legion. Fionn Murphy, who lives near Taberno, and Simon Bramhall, a senior consultant at the Hereford Hospital in the UK, have just published ‘Charity: A Dip into Donation Paradise.’ It is a lighthearted, entertaining look
Charity begins at home at life in a fictional charity shop working to help homeless veterans. Both the authors have experience, although not quite as hilarious as that depicted in the novel, having worked as volunteers in charity shops.
Fionn has helped out at the HuercalOvera branch of MACS since it opened four years ago. Fionn and Simon met in 2012 when he successfully operated on her at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birming-
ham, the same hospital which treats British military personnel, especially those wounded on active service. Fionn’s son is also a serving RAF officer, so she and Simon felt strongly that a book called Charity, featuring a

Overdoing the mushroom picking THE Guardia Civil have filed official complaints against several individuals for overdoing the mushroom picking in Sierro in the Upper Almanzora. Officers on patrol in Los Seis Pies mountain area found crates with more than 50 kilos of saffron milk cap mushrooms in three vehicles during a traffic control precisely to prevent these kinds of illegal activities. This was a clear violation of regulations on the permitted amount of collecting no more than five kilos per person a day. What’s more, pickers are not allowed to use tools which alter the topsoil while gathering wild mushrooms as it could prevent new growth, and the mushrooms picked should be for home consumption. Action on processionary caterpillars in Adra ADRA Council is taking preventative action against processionary caterpillars at schools and in urban areas with pine trees. Steps are being taken in more than 20 locations altogether. Urban Cleaning councillor Jose Crespo explained the treatment consists of fumigating
trees with insecticide to “reduce the possibilities of the insect appearing.” Crespo said it was an essential step to “break the cycle of the processionary caterpillar from the start and avoid there being some kind of plague if they reach the ground where there is a greater probability of causing problems.”
This is not the first time the local authority has taken steps against these kinds of critters. Prevention and treatment measures have been applied in areas where they are most likely to have appeared on a number of previous occasions. The council also carries out periodic visual checks on all areas where there are pines.
Voting in the UK General Election BRITISH citizens living abroad may vote in UK general elections, referendums and European Parliament elections for up to 15 years after leaving the UK but may only do so if they were registered to vote in the UK while living there. Those who were under 18 at the time of leaving the UK may vote as long as their parent or guardian was registered to vote in the UK and must apply accordingly. The actual limit is arbitrary and has changed from as little as seven years to more than 15, but it was Conservative policy that the time limit should be scrapped and it supported a private members bill to this effect. For various reasons, it was not considered possible to push the bill through prior to the Brexit Referendum or the last election and now it was talked out of Parliament earlier in the year, so those who have lived outside of the UK for more than 15 years will not be allowed to vote in the General Election on December 12. If you are already registered with your local council as an active voter living overseas then it is expected that your ballot paper will be posted to you on or about
November 20. If however you have not yet confirmed registration, but were registered on the electoral list prior to your leaving the UK (or were under 18 and qualify) , then this must be done by 5pm November 26 and your ballot paper should be posted on November 30. Due to the tight time frame there is a very strong risk that some Overseas Electors would not be able to receive and return a postal vote in time for it to be counted by 10pm on the day of election. There is also the possibility that a postal strike by Royal Mail will take place in November/December 2019 which could cause chaos for postal votes. Because of this local councils are strongly advising that potential voters should consider changing their arrangement to a proxy vote instead by appointing someone to vote on their behalf, but they would need to be registered themselves and be eligible to vote in national elections. As European nationals are not able to vote in UK Parliamentary elections, your proxy would need to hold British, Irish or Commonwealth nationality.

New manager for UD Almeria FORMER Real Madrid player Jose Maria ‘Guti’ Gutierrez has taken over as the new manager of UD Almeria. The Almeria City football club confirmed the news on its Twitter account just a few hours after announcing the departure of Portuguese trainer Pedro Emanuel by mutual agreement. There had however been earlier hints Guti would be joining the provincial side. Two days earlier UD Almeria owner and p r e s i d e n t Tu r k i A l Sheik posted a photo of himself and the footballer on his Facebook page with the message ‘with the Real Madrid and Spanish team legend.’
A day later the club’s Twitter feed featured an animation of a giant spotlight beaming what h a d b e e n G u t i ’s R e a l Madrid shirt number over the Almeria Mediterranean stadium with the comment: ‘A certain #14 is flying in.’ The 4 3 - y e a r- o l d played almost exclusively for Real Madrid for his whole career on the pitch. He appeared in 542 official Real Madrid matches and during his time with the club it won 15 trophies, including three Champions League titles. He also played on the national Spanish team 13 times. School upgrade works A CANTORIA school is set to undergo a series of upgrades thanks to a regional government investment. The Junta de Andalucia’s Edu-
cation and Sport regional ministry has now awarded the €155,000 contracts for reforms at the Cerro Castillo school. The works will include improvements to the toilets,
repairs to flooring and a reorganisation of space to better fit with the school’s needs. The works are scheduled to take three months to complete.

Greener light for Adra stadium THE lighting at Adra’s Miramar stadium is scheduled to go greener. Mayor Manuel Cortes has now signed the contract for the installation of LED technology lights at the football ground, which is due to be completed by the end of this month. The cost of the change will be more than €62,000. Cortes described the investment as “very important for the locality, not only for the conditions of the stadium, which is going to substantially improve in terms of lighting, but also for the energy saving which using LED technology is going to mean, in this way respecting the environment more.” The mayor pointed out the stadium is used every day of the week, for both training and matches, “hence the young people who use these facilities will be able to continue practising sport with better light conditions.” The council is also due to carry out an energy efficiency study on nearly 20 municipal buildings with the aim of implementing measures to lower consumption and protect the environment.

Armed robbers lure victims with car swap scam A POLICE investigation into armed robbers luring victims through a car swap scam resulted in three arrests in Almeria and one in Granada. Police said the thieves fooled victims into thinking they wanted to swap top-of-therange vehicles so they could rob them of cash and other items, getting away with €81,000 in all. The gang feigned interest in vehicles offered by car sales companies and offered a higher range car in return, in addition to receiving a cash payment. They arranged to meet company representatives in country locations, then surprised them, threatening them with guns. In one case, the gang ambushed a Salamanca car sales company rep who came with €42,000 in cash for a seller in Almeria. Two vehicles blocked his path and three hooded men jumped out on him, one of them carrying a pistol. In a second incident, two gang members with pistols and one armed with an automatic rifle cornered two buyers from Valencia. When the victims smashed into one of the criminals’ cars to tr y and get away, the one with the automatic rifle fired three times at their car. Fearing for their lives they handed over €39,000. Police investigations led to the detention of a Spaniard and two Moroccans in Almeria. Another individual escaped, but was later detained in Granada.

Walker’s body recovered Big plans for tallest building in Spain in taxing conditions GUARDIA CIVIL managed to recover the body of a walker who went missing in the Gredos mountains in the centre of Spain following a 24-hour rescue operation in taxing conditions. Difficult terrain and adverse weather meant it took the team more than eight hours of walking to bring the body down. The emergency services first alerted the Guardia to the walker’s disappearance just before midnight on November 3, reporting he had failed to return to where he had parked his car. The Guardia immediately launched the action protocol. Tw o R e s c u e a n d M o u n t a i n G r o u p s p e c i a l i s t s started the search and location operation and a h e l i c o p t e r f r o m t h e To r r e j o n d e A r d o z b a s e d i n Madrid was mobilised, although it was unable to fly due to the weather. Following a search of more than 12 hours on foot in strong winds, rain, snow and fog the team located the walker in an area known as Canal No r t e C l a s i c a d e l A l m a n z o r i n Z a p a r d i e l d e l a Ribera in Avila at an altitude of 2,441 metres. At midday on November 5 Guardia officers from Greim and one from Ereim got to the location of the body to carry it down in what was by now worsening weather. They made it to the Gredos Platform just before 9.30pm where the walker’s family members were waiting to identify their loved one.
OURENSE Council has announced plans to build the highest building in Spain and the fifth tallest in Europe. The idea is to construct an 80-storey skyscraper in the city to attract tourists and boost the local economy, at the same time as creating “an absolutely practical infrastructure,” the authority explained. The council said the new plan would mean the same volume of new buildings, but would be something different and competitive. “ We w o u l d b e l o o k i n g at the highest building in Spain, at more than 300 metres, and one of the first five in Europe,” the council pointed out, insisting it would be “a guaranteed visitor attraction.” Among the proposed features of the edifice would be a hotel, apartments, office space and a viewing platform on the top floor.
Grisly find in Sevilla squatters’ house THE Guardia Civil are investigating the death of two men after their badly decomposed bodies were found in a squatters’ house in Lebrija in Sevilla. The grisly discovery came after a
neighbour reported a strong stench emanating from the property to the authorities. The remains are of one male aged between 20 and 25 and another aged
from 40 to 45, according to Spanish press reports. The remains have been transferred to the Forensic Anatomy Institute to establish the cause of death.

LOCAL sports clubs will be eligible for a stake in a €90,000 subsidy to promote women’s sport in Benidorm. A town hall committee has now approved the conditions to be met by the sports clubs and associations with sportsw o m e n a n d w o m e n ’s t e a m s , a n n o u n c e d M a r i l o C e b r e r o s , B e n i d o r m ’s c o u n c i l l o r responsible for sport. This will be the first time that the town hall has helped women’s sport in general, as until now grants have been made directly to specific clubs or teams, Cebreros said. “With this formula we are making financial help available to all clubs in Benidorm and, what’s more, guaranteeing total equality and maximum transparency,” the councillor added. “Funding will be allocated according to previously established requirements set out in the terms and conditions.” Grants will be pegged to a limit of €15,000 per club or body and must be used to cover the cost of activities, projects and prog r a m m e s a i m e d a t p r o m o t i n g w o m e n ’s sport.
ESTEPONA has made a move towards an ecofriendly future with solar powered lighting. The town hall has opted to install LED lighting connected to solar panels. More than 100 units will be installed in the first phase of the project. This new lighting will be used in different parts of the city and will cut CO2 emissions down by 18 tonnes. The pioneering lighting system will continue the plan to reduce energy consumption and look after the environment. Deputy mayor in charge of Services - Blas Ruzafa - has announced 106 units will be installed in the city centre and outskirts. Ruzafa explains that electricity will be generated by solar panels attached to the lights. The LEDs have a sensor that can detect ambient light and will turn on and off accordingly. Another benefit is their longer product life, that can last up to five years. And their easy set up that requires no wiring to the electricity supply. All these beneficial characteristics will lead to savings for the city and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 18 tonnes. The first phase will see 5,900 lights replaced by more efficient LEDs that will save approximately €160,000 in electricity bills.
Almeria in London ALMERIA has its eye on reinforcing and expanding its share of the British tourist market. A delegation from the Provincial Tourist Service was in London this week to promote Almeria at the World Travel Market, considered one of the most important travel trade shows in Europe. There was a 550sqm Costa de Almeria stand within the Andalucia exhibition area, and over the three days the Diputacion de Almeria Tourism delegate Fernando Gimenez met with travel agents, airlines, marketing companies, travel media and tour operators with a view to boosting British visitor numbers. The deputy referred to the provincial government’s “ambitious promotion campaign with which we want to intensify this market and clear up any doubts which the Brexit situation or the Thomas Cook case generate.” He said the delegation had gone to London “with the hope of offering confidence and convinced of the virtues of the Costa de Almeria destination, which continues to be one of the British’s favourites. “Our presence here generates numerous commercial opportunities which we have to take advantage of so they are to the benefit of Almeria Province as a tourist destination.”
THE Diputación de Malaga has approved the proposal of €1.9 million worth of projects designed to improve the facilities on the region. The Governing Board of the Diputación de Malaga has approved the projects which cover 11 municipalities in the province and focused on the towns that have less than 20,000 residents. The total investment is funded by the provincial institution within the Plan of Assistance and Cooperation and will aim to provide improvements to the towns’ streets and access and the remodelling of municipal swimming pools. One of the largest beneficiaries is La Viñuela which will receive a total of €499,353 to improve the southern access to the area. Works have already begun on improving the road and infrastructure, but the investment will ensure that the third and fourth stages are able to be completed. Riogordo will receive €320,380 to refurbish their swimming pool, whilst Torrox will get €269,252 for the El Peñoncillo area of the N-340. Other municipalities that look forward to improvement projects are Sayalonga, Periana, Alcaucin and Molino Barco. Outside of Axarquia, Antequera has been approved to continue the works in Sierra de Yeguas, for the development of the fifth and sixth phase of urbanisation and paving of the Avenida Fuente de Piedra.

Funding for floods THE Council of Ministers has authorised a payment of €18 million in aid for the damages caused by the severe floods which ravaged the Llevant area in Mallorca last year. Pedro Sánchez, the acting Prime Minister of Spain, took advantage of his electoral rally in Palma last week to make the announcement. Accompanied by PSOE colleagues, the mayor of Palma and members of Congress, Sánchez confirmed that the state will cover a large proportion of the costs which were spent to repair the infrastructure and public facilities in the affected municipalities. The floods of October 9 constitute as one of the most serious tragedies caused by rain to take place in Spain over the last 25 years. Claiming the lives of 13 people and injuring several others, numerous houses and roadways were also left severely damaged. In the days after the flooding, it is reported that authorities removed over 4,200 tons of rubble and debris, carrying out 23 actions on the roads. Sant Llorenç was the worst affected town, with Artà, Manacor, Capdepera and Son Servera also suffering huge devastation. The impact of the downpour was exacerbated by geography, infrastructure and the difficulty of forecasting the disaster. Experts at the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) estimated that a torrential rain of this magnitude only repeats itself once in every 1,000 years.
Glorious once again SANTA MARIA Church will open its doors on November 17 to celebrate the end of restoration works. San Clemente Cultural Federation has organised the open day for guests to enjoy the newly refurbished temple. Spain’s Ministry of Development has invested €1 million in the restoration so far, with further building still planned. Correos postal service, will also commemorate the occasion by issuing a stamp with the façade of the medieval church. Mayor Diego José Mateos has said further work will follow the initial restoration. The atrium will be the next project workers will undertake, with a budget of €300,000 already approved from the European Investment Bank. Mateos explained that rehabilitation of the exterior had been impossible due to bureaucratic reasons which have now been resolved.

IT is no secret that since the re duction in tension between the USA and Cuba during the Obama administration that the Spanish government has been encourag ing companies to become in volved in the Cuban economy. Now, that Donald Trump has activated the 1996 HelmsBurton Act, there is a possibility that Spanish companies may be sued for their activities within the Caribbean nation. There may be as many as 16 Spanish companies including Iberostar, Melia, BBVA bank which could be targeted, but Spain has warned that it will chal lenge any and all lawsuits that may arise.

Post early for Christmas A PLANNED strike by post office workers in the UK could cause chaos in December affecting Christmas deliveries and over seas postal votes for the General Elec tion. Some 97 per cent of workers voted for the stoppage and although no date or dates have been set, the Royal Mail is
fighting back. They have taken legal action asking for an injunction to stop the strike, claiming that the strike ballot was ‘unlawful and, therefore, null and void.’ The operation was floated on the Stock Exchange in 2013 and in 2015 the govern ment sold the last of its shares.

Trusting Spain to help By John Smith THE Amazon Group is increasing its investment in Spain by an estimat ed €2.5 billion by opening three new data centres in its fight against Microsoft and Google. A subsidiary, Amazon Web Ser vices (AWS) which is involved with Cloud storage is the vehicle being used for this expansion which will take place in Aragon and will be ideally placed to serve all of the main business areas in Spain. Whilst it is primarily an Amazon project, it does already supply ser vices to a number of Spanish com panies such as Mapfre, Endesa and

More delay, more cost THE London Crossrail project which is planned to connect Reading with Shenfield and is partially open has taken another hit and will not be completed until 2021. To add to the problems of what
is currently Europe’s biggest infrastructure scheme which should have been completed by December 2018 is that it is also believed costs are in the region of £650 million (€715 million) over the re-
vised budget. The original targeted cost for what will be known as the Elizabeth Line was £15.9 billion (€18.25 billion) and is now likely to reach £18.25 billion (€21 billion).
BBVA and once the centres are open, they will have the capacity and reach to service most of south ern Europe. This will be the seventh Euro pean centre of its type to be opened, after existing divisions in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Swe den and France, with Italy also planned. Its two biggest competitors do not have similar centres in Spain which increases the AWS opportu nity as experts say that it is impor tant that companies have the op tion to store information on the Cloud through locally based opera tions. Already one of the three most profitable companies in the world, Amazon has expanded quite quickly within Spain with its online sales services and warehouses and cur rently employs almost 5,000 work ers and has invested in excess of €1 billion to date. With the new centres expected to be open by late 2022 or early 2023, the employment prospects which will include large numbers of workers constructing the buildings just continue to expand.

Less wealth SWISS bank UBS has reported that for the first time since 2015 the combined wealth of the world’s billionaires in 2018 had fallen by 4.3 per cent to $8.5 trillion (€7.7 trillion). The bulk of those affected are based in Asia.
GDP growth LATE last week, the European Commission reduced its forecast for Spain’s GDP growth in 2019 to 1.9 per cent, from the previous estimate of 2.3 per cent. This compares well to the forecast for the Eurozone of just 1.1 per cent.
Pension cuts FOLLOWING discussions with shareholders, the Standard Chartered Bank which operates in 60 countries throughout the world has agreed to reduce the pension allowances for the CEO and CFO from 20 per cent to 10 per cent of their salaries.

Heritage under threat? LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT WHEN is all this ridiculous, upsetting and often downright insulting reversed racism going to stop? How long will it take for the authorities to gather the courage to persecute the minority whingers with the same fervour and enthusiasm they seem to reserve for the victimised majori ties, who are having to watch almost everything that comes out of their mouths in case it ‘of fends’ someone? Just recently we had that awful British hating Afua Hirsch, who complained that white models should not adopt Afro hair styles because it was trying to ‘steal black culture.’ Nothing of course was mentioned of the thou sands of hair dressing salons earning fortunes by straightening, and thereby westernising, the no toriously difficult hair of black ladies the world over! This week has been no exception to the ex ponents of this onesided attitude, which, if they’re not careful, will turn us all into racists. The small and pretty town of Bideford has for years been referred to as ‘Little White Town.’ This title stretches back to the 1850s when the

town, endeavouring to repel the scourge of cholera, had all its houses painted white and cov ered in ash. Apparently during this period, it was referred to by author Charles Kingsley in his book Westward Ho, as a ‘little white town.’ Over the years, the name has become a part of its heritage and is proudly displayed on a num
ber of public notices and postings. Yes, you’ve guessed it. There has now been a complaint that the name is racist! What is even more annoying, is that it appears there were actually only a cou ple of dissenters, but in the usual ‘minority ap peasement’ mode that seems to prevail over our once great country, the town council has de
creed that the name be changed in case they ap peared to be advocating ‘white supremacy.’ You really couldn’t make it up could you? Once again the British culture and heritage is being threatened by PC people, who are in fact the biggest racists of all. I mean where does it all end? How long will it be before anything referred to as white offends some bigot or another? I do actually recall, that at the end of apartheid in South Africa, it was somewhat frowned upon to ask for a white coffee and more socially ac ceptable to request a coffee with milk! Will Whitechapel one day be referred to as Grey chapel? Whitehaven become Greenhaven? Will it be the Purple Cliffs of Dover welcoming the ille gal immigrant paddling across the English Chan nel? Why don’t we expunge the word from the dictionaries altogether? For heavens and all our sakes, when is some one going to get a grip and say enough is enough? The UK is already one of the most wel coming and politically correct places on the plan et. What do these bigots actually want? Will they ever be happy? It’s sad that many of the people I regarded as pillars of the community when I was growing up school/col lege principals, police officers, politi cians (with their General Election ‘pledges’) now appear to have lost the concept of selfless public service. And yet no one seems to have
learned anything from their miscon duct! There’s nothing but hot air, lip service and a stubborn refusal to face up to reality followed by phras es like ‘we’ve all learned the lessons,’ ‘we’ve moved on,’ ‘the system’s been overhauled.’ Or, when wrongdoing’s uncov ered, phrases like: ‘it’s only a few’ who make ‘mistakes.’ Well, why are the majority so incompetent or not up to dealing with ‘the few’ when it routinely happens? Shouldn’t repeat ed wrongdoing ring alarm bells? I know I bang on about unwarrant ed expenses, the NHS, the police ser vice and so on. My rationale is that by drawing repeated attention to these issues can there be any hope of change. Truth stranger than fiction? You couldn’t make it up. A solution needed HOMELESSNESS has travelled the Atlantic Ocean and has expanded across Europe. The US has always been known for unacceptably high numbers of people living on the streets. The way of life in the capitalist hub has never been easy for those who couldn’t keep up and estimates state that 129,972 people are homeless in California alone. In Europe, vagrancy is rising and is in need of an immediate solution. Charity Shelter calculated that around 300,000 people lived on the streets in the UK. As of March 2019, 32,740 households were considered homeless and 126,020 children were living in temporary housing like B&Bs or hostels. The situation in Spain is also worsening as house and rent prices soar. Around 31,000 people are homeless and numbers are set to increase. It’s getting more common to come across people sleeping rough at night and to find areas taken over by vagrants. Article 47 in the Spanish Constitution states that Spanish citizens have the right to enjoy decent and adequate housing. It also adds that public authorities will promote the necessary conditions to enforce this right. Although homelessness is less prominent in Spain, it still constitutes a significant social issue that requires change. Migrants and young people are some of the most affected, with 30 per cent of the homeless aged between 18-29.
NEVER FORGET REMEMBRANCE DAY has always been very important to me and I always pay my re spects to those who died in the line of duty. Living abroad, I sometimes feel distanced from this tradition. It’s important that we never forget the brave men who fought for our country, and we need to pass this on to future generations. Even though we may not be living in the UK, we can still show our sup port in many ways. Thank you to the local businesses who honour the fallen and sell poppies for charity, you help us feel united as we remember our roots. I was grateful for the piece in Euro Weekly dedicated to Remembrance Day and every thing that it represents. In light of everything going on, moments like these put everything into perspective. It’s good to forget Brexit for one day and remember why I’m proud to be British. Sid Wilson
In the stars? I THINK there must be something in the stars right now, some heavenly or unheavenly in fluence that decided to punish Spain and the UK at roughly the same time with a gen eral election. Here in Spain it’s beginning to look like Groundhog Day with Pedro Sanchez try ing to form a government yet again after inconclusive results and a hung parlia ment although this time Vox will be breathing down his neck as well. Perhaps the Spanish are more fortu nate than Brits back home, though, be cause those who bothered to turn out at least knew who to vote for. It’s a relief that I’m not eligible to vote in Britain’s December elections because I wouldn’t know which of that bunch of selfserving politicians would deserve my support. A skincare secret
AGEING is one of our biggest beauty concerns and it can turn into the bane of our existence. With ageing comes antiageing products, de signed to tackle wrinkles and plump the skin. But with so many products and confusing terms to deal with, it isn’t easy to manage this minefield. However, there is one product that has got everybody talking. From skincare experts and beauty fanatics to dermatologists, they are all loving retinol. Retinoids have been on the scene for many years, but it’s just now that most people are taking notice. Retinol has properties that are said to reverse signs of ageing and also act as a preventive measure. The ingredient derives from Vitamin A and is found in many creams and lotions. It promotes collagen production and exfoliates the outer most layer of skin. It changes the way aged cells behave, making them act like younger cells. This results in softening, improving the texture of the skin and minimising the look of fine lines. Retinol is also good for acne scars and sun damage and can brighten the skin, giving the look of a youthful complexion. Age spots can al so be lightened with this acidic product as skin tone is evened out.
AMAZING RESULTS: Retinol is a strong product that renews skin.
That said, retinol may not be suitable for all skin types. If you suffer any conditions such as eczema or rosacea, a high strength product like this could cause further inflammation. To com bat this, adding very small amounts to your moisturiser can introduce skin slowly to the in gredient, always making sure to use SPF after wards. It is also encouraged that people without un derlying skin conditions use small amounts when starting to use retinol. Beginning by ap
plying twice a week and then gradually increas ing the quantity if skin reacts well. Applying retinol is recommended no more than three times a week. As a general rule, any retinoid creams or serums are to be used at night as they increase sensitivity to sunlight. Wearing SPF daily is essential when the ingredi ent is part of your skincare routine. And taking into account that it is a strong product; users should not use more than a peasized amount. Younger people can also use retinol but they

AI scans for cancer ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE is now being used to detect cancer in a pi oneering procedure. A new blood test uses AI to quickly scan for brain tumours with 90 per cent ac curacy. Scientist hope that this new diagnostic tool could be used by the NHS and hospitals worldwide. Brain tumours are hard to detect and cause symptoms that can be confused with other maladies. These ambiguous symptoms in clude headaches, memory loss and vision problems, with a scan being the only way to detect the cancer ous cells. On many occasions, this can result in late diagnosis and the illness reaching advanced stages. The new test is currently being tested and is able to give doctors a result within hours. Scientists hope this system will result in more cases of early detection and successful treatment. The AI looks for the exis tence of gliomas, the most common form of brain tumours. The innovative discovery took place at the University of Edinburgh and was presented at the Cancer

ing used in hospitals, a larger num ber of people could be tested and detection could skyrocket. Scientists working on the AI predict that the test could reach public clinics within 18 months. Currently, the blood test has been trialled on 400 people
with signs of tumours. The test cor rectly identified 40 people with can cer and 82 per cent of total cancers, giving it a high accuracy rating. One of the benefits of the new tool, is how simple and straightfor ward the test is. The Artificial Intelli gence program runs on a laptop and takes a small amount of time. It us es a technique called infrared spec troscopy that reads the chemical compounds in blood. Once the blood has been extract ed, AI analyses the results and looks for patterns that could indicate a tu mour, indicating if the patient needs a scan to confirm the pres ence of cancer. For health services, it would mean giving a simple blood test to patients before having to do a time consuming scan and the process of detection and referral for brain scans would be more efficient. Investigators are now looking to run further tests to get the system implanted. A trial will be performed on 600 British patients who are cur rently awaiting a brain scan.

The reason we choose to save our money is be cause we have an end goal that we one day hope to reach. That goal would be to have our own fully op erational Hospice in the Almeria re gion of Spain. This area of Spain is in need of a hospice to care and focus on keeping patients as comfortable as possible and allowing them and their family members to remain to gether in the comfort and dignity of safe surroundings. We hope to one day achieve our dream of having our very own up and running hospice with a team of medical and health care profession
als, who address all aspects of a pa tient’s cancer illness with impor tance on controlling and reducing pain and any discomfort. A hospice will reduce the stress and ease family anxiety knowing that their loved one has 24hour care, from companionship to their favourite food. The most important element of MACS’s future hospice is to completely respect a patient’s wishes. This is an essential compo nent of hospice care, allowing fami lies to focus on what really matters instead of the extensive procedures of a hospital environment by spend ing quality and precious time con centrating on things that are impor tant to them. We would not be able to offer the support we currently do if it wasn’t for the generous public. Discussing the big issues THE World Health Summit in Berlin has requested govern ments make difficult decisions surrounding health and climate change. Three important health issues require political decisions to tackle the consequences of global warming, universal cov erage and inequality of access to technology.

Climate change and its conse quences for health was heavily discussed, and the fact half the world population doesn’t have access to health care. Olives IT is that time of year again at Olive Tree Farm, where we are watching the olives like a hawk! Last year’s crop was not good, but this year is looking much better! For anyone new to the area who has olive trees, do pick them. Even if you only have a couple of carrier bags full, you can take them to your local oil press (Almazara). To get your own oil back you need around 500 kilos and you have to make an appointment to get them pressed, but even if you take a small amount, they are weighed, checked for oil content and you can come away with a bot tle of delicious olive oil. You can also preserve them. If you have ever picked one straight off the tree, you will know what I mean when I say they are disgusting! They are extremely bitter. Hats off to whoever realised that by soaking them for a few weeks in brine, you end up with the delicious fruits that we are famil iar with. If you decide to preserve your own, pick them carefully one at a time. You need to discard any bruised or damaged fruits or any with holes in. Pick all green or all black, don’t mix them for cur ing. There are many ways to cure them and I have tried a few. I won’t be doing a huge amount, prob ably half a dozen jars in total, so don’t worry that
you have not got enough fruits to try. If you do them in jars (sterilised jars), make sure the brine overflows be fore you add your lid, you don’t want air in there. Below is one of the easi est ways and is the one I will be do ing this year. Method Week one: Once you have your fruits, rinse them to make sure they are clean and add them to a large ceramic container with a lid. You then need to add water and salt. For the first brine, you want ¾ of a cup of salt to every gallon of water. One third of your water needs to be hot so you can dissolve the salt in it before adding to your olives. Cool this salt water down with the rest of your gallon of cold water. Add a plate or a stone to your olives to stop them from floating and then add your saltwater (brine) making sure all the olives are submerged. You now need to leave them in a cool place for a week, undisturbed. Week two: For the second week you need a stronger brine. This time you use one and a half cups of salt to your gallon of water. Again, dissolve the salt as above. Drain off the first lot of brine and add your second lot making sure they are properly covered. You now need to

Once they taste right to you, you can add them to sterilised jars and if you wish, and depending on taste, refresh the brine using the weaker solution as used in week one. NB: There are many variations you can use, some people split the olives using a mallet before curing. Some prefer to remove the stone. You can just use plain water which you change every week for about six weeks. You can even do it in a couple of weeks changing the water every day. You can also add things like chilli flakes and cloves of garlic. Whichever method you decide to try though, use bottled water.

Some retail therapy for a good cause PROJECT APPROVED: Roads set to undergo resurfacing works.
Rural road resurfacing SECTIONS of rural roads in the north of the province are set to undergo resurfacing works. The Diputacion de Almeria has approved projects adding up to an investment of €330,000, which will involve improvements to two sections of provincial highways connecting four municipalities in the Almanzora and Los Velez regions. There will be works on five kilometres in all of the AL8101 running from Oria to San Roque in Albox and the AL-9102 from Velez-Blanco to Cañadas de Cañe-
pla in Maria via Topares. The provincial administration has now awarded the works contracts for the projects. Referring to the improvements to 1.5 kilometres of the road connecting Oria and Albox, Diputacion Public Works deputy Oscar Liria said they would “allow for better circulation and guarantee safety.” According to Liria, the project will make it possible for heavy vehicles to use the road “without being a rise to other drivers.”
A SALE and auction of gorgeous items raised ver y welcome funds for the Animal Protection Society Albox. Staged at Chapman’s bar and restaurant in Albox, there was plenty of glitz and glamour. The auction had lots ranging from shoes, evening bags and accessories to beautiful dresses and jackets for cruises and the Christmas season. Viewing was during the afternoon and Chapman’s owner Tonia Gray ran the evening auction. Organiser Sally Miller was delighted with the €300 raised and thanked Val Boscott and all the volunteers who helped to run the event, and especially Tonia and Connor for being such great hosts. APSA also had a Christmas goodies stall with decorations and gift ideas and held a raffle with items donated by the Sleepcentre and Wendy’s Shiatsu Centre among others. The charity will have a Christmas stall at the Chapman’s fete on Tuesday November 19.

THE Animal Protection Society Albox charity walk raised over €500 for the charity. The walkers and their dogs met at the Rosaleda Hotel in Arboleas and completed a five-kilometre circular walk on a scenic, but not overly taxing route led by David Ridyard. Kitty Kat celebrates its charity status CANTORIA feral cat neutering organisation Kitty Kat Almanz o r a Va l l e y ( K K AV ) now has charity status. The village and surrounding area have a large number of feral and stray cats who are fed by the locals, but the numbers are getting out of hand, KKAV says. Seeing this problem, Ron and Jean Nield launched a project to limit the number of kittens being born. They humanely catch a feral cat, take it to a vet to be checked and neutered and then return it safely back to its area. Amazingly the couple has neutered 30 cats since April. Ron and Jean have the support of villagers, Cantoria mayor Puri Sanchez and George Gonzales from the local council, who has

It is reported that 37 per cent of new cars are fitted with the traditional parking brake lever. Premium brands such as Au di, Land Rover, Mercedes and Porsche have all opted against the mechanical feature, with many others following suit. However, lack of the feature does not mean a lack of safety as the new electronic parking brake serves the same purpose. Both have to pass the rele vant product standards for vol ume sales and an MoT test. As cars are increasingly fitted with automatic gearboxes, linked to the handbrake, and automatic hold functions for hillstarts, the integration of the socalled handbrake and the other sophisticated control sys tems makes more sense than
attempting to leave the me chanical element under the di rect control of the driver the danger of the mechanical and the electronic systems interfer ing with each other is plain.

An electronic parking brake is operated using a switch that ac tivates a pair of small motors that engage the rear brakes. What was once considered a luxury and advanced feature,
the electronic brake requires less physical effort and holds the car more securely. Most electronic handbrakes disengage automatically when you pull away, plus they often
offer the additional safety bene fit of an automatic hillhold as sist function. The switch helps streamline cabins by taking up less space than a chunky lever on the centre console.
However, on the downside, the consequence of an elec tronic parking brake malfunc tioning could be more drastic. If so, then the car could be ren dered immobile.

Almeria Lawn Bowling Club Mixed Pairs well fought THE Almeria Lawn Bowling Club Mixed Pairs handicap competition proved to be more popular than the ALBC Fours which it replaced. The club reported entries were bet ter in this competition, which was played over four days. Rain upset the schedule however, so the final was late starting and took place on November 5. The final was a well fought occasion with all players playing well. Graham and Cath Patrick, who had a twoshot lead with the handicap, started the scoring, but Wayne and Carol Roberts levelled the score on the seventh end 55. Wayne and Carol then had five ends without scoring until the 12th end. Nip and tuck from here on ended with Graham and Cath winning the champi onship by two shots, 1412. Graham and Cath reached the final by having a very close game against Mick and Di Dutfield, winning by one shot. Wayne and Carol had a good game against John and Eileen Phoenix to get into the final. THE two top premiership teams clashed at Anfield on Sunday Liverpool v Manchester City with five points between them at the top of the table. It wasn’t long at all until the first goal when on six minutes City thought they should have had a penalty for handball, after the ball flicked off Alexander Arnold’s thigh and into his arm. The referee waved play on and Liverpool a raid down the left. Mane’s low cross was poked clear, but Fabinho ran onto it, took a touch and blasted it inside the post from 25 yards ensuring Liver pool a footing with a 10 ear ly lead.
