AIM: The provincial government is hoping to expand the Costa de Almeria’s share of the British tourist market.
ALMERIA IN LONDON ALMERIA has its eye on reinforcing and expanding its share of the British tourist market. A delegation from the Provincial Tourist Service was in London this week to promote Almeria at the World Travel Market, considered one of the most important travel trade shows in Europe. There was a 550sqm Costa de Almeria stand within the Andalucia exhibition area, and
over the three days the Diputacion de Almeria Tourism delegate Fernando Gimenez met with travel agents, airlines, marketing companies, travel media and tour operators with a view to boosting British visitor numbers. The deputy referred to the provincial government’s “ambitious promotion campaign with which we want to intensify this market and clear up any doubts which the Brexit situation or the
Thomas Cook case generate.” He said the delegation had gone to London “with the hope of offering confidence and convinced of the virtues of the Costa de Almeria destination, which continues to be one of the British’s favourites. “Our presence here generates numerous commercial opportunities which we have to take advantage of so they are to the benefit of Almeria Province as a tourist destination.”

Doctor attack arrest POLICE arrested a 42-year-old Colombian woman for physically attacking a doctor at the Torrecardenas hospital in Almeria City. Police said the incident in the early hours of Monday morning occurred while the doctor was on duty in the emer-
gencies department. The doctor told the woman the results of her blood analysis showed everything was fine and she could go home. The patient then asked to be put on a drip, but the doctor told her it was unnecessary. As she went to remove the tube connected to the patient, without
saying a word the woman whacked her in the face with a bag at the same time as pinching the doctor so hard on her left arm she caused bruising. The 42-yearold was the 10th person police have detained in Almeria for violent attacks on medical staff since September last year.

OBJECTIVE: The provincial government said the aim was to attract visitors to Almeria year-round. THE attractions of inland Almeria as a year-round destination is the main message the provincial government aims to get across in a major winter advertising campaign. The Diputacion de Almeria is highlighting the varied offer of the province’s 91 inland municipalities in eight Spanish cities and at major transports hubs. The campaign will feature 350 digital street marketing signs in the principal commercial areas of Albacete, Alicante, Cordoba, Granada, Jaen, Madrid, Murcia and Sevilla. Fixed and flash images and videos will be screened in 150 second-long loops. There will also be promotional spots at Barcelona, Madrid and Sevilla airports and on
the Sol underground station in the national capital. The campaign will include online actions and information in the media. The Diputacion said the campaign was timed to coincide with the drop in temperatures in much of Spain in contrast with Almeria’s ‘extended spring.’ Gaining a solid visitor market for Almeria’s interior will ‘break the seasonal nature’ of provincial tourism, according to Diputacion Tourism deputy Fernando Gimenez “There are municipalities which have reinvented themselves thanks to tourism and which are an important attraction for our destination”, he commented. “With this campaign we want to make inland Costa de Almeria known to the maximum possible number of tourists.”

ALMERIA City mayor Ramon Fernandez-Pacheco has signed an agreement with the regional government which incorporates the provincial capital into the 112 Emergencies Andalucia service platform. This allows municipal emergency services to obtain information on any situation in the city and the province in real time.

THE festival of San Martín or the Humanitarians festival is one of the most popular autumn folklore celebrations, during the time when c ro p s a re s e e d e d a n d f a t tened cattle are slaughtered. This international festivity celebrates Saint Martin of Tours, a Roman soldier known for his kindness and humanitarian beliefs, who later became a French bishop. Legend says he once cut his cloak in half to
share with a beggar during a snowstorm. That same night he dreamt of Jesus wearing his half cloak and telling the angels ‘Here is Martin, the Roman soldier who is now baptised, he has clothed me.’ His good humour and kind nature earned him the respect and admiration of his people. Nowadays, Saint Martin is considered protector of beggars and patron of soldiers. This day is also known in some places as Old Hallowmas Eve and will be celebrated all over Europe
Pension gap PENSIONS in Almeria are around €80 below the regional average, according to the Andalucia Institute of Statistics and Cartography. The more than 90,000 people receiving a pension in Almeria typically receive €785 a month compared with an Andalucia average of €865, the institute’s Andalucia Residents Social Security Contribution Pensions report reveals. The study, which is based on figures for 2018, also shows there is a significant gender pay gap. Women in the province get an average of just over €640 while men get €943. By contrast, the Andalucia average for women is a little over €700 a month and €1,037 for male pensioners. Most people receiving a pension in Almeria are aged over 65. Thirty per cent of the pensions paid to Almeria residents are to widows (25,459) or widowers (2,776). There are 10 women aged under 30 receiving widows’ pensions.

Dictatorship victims not forgotten ALMERIANS who suffered repression during the Civil War and the Franco dictatorship are not forgotten. Acting Justice Minister Dolores Delgado was in Almeria last week to present 42 declarations of reparations and personal recognition to the families of victims. In an official act staged at the Unicaja Cultural Centre in Almeria City, the minister paid an emotional tribute to the 42, among them the only victim still alive today, Amalia Tesoro Amate. She said while they were condemned at the time by the Francoist regime they committed no crime and “should not have been punished.” The recognitions were presented in compliance with the Historic Memory Law, defended by Delgado in her speech because “the memory is a memory of the future and of democracy. The peace we have now we owe to the victims,” she commented.

Mighty cruise ship back ONE of the largest sailing cruise ships in the world spent the All Saints’ Day bank holiday docked in Almeria. The five-mast staysail schooner Wind Surf made a 14-hour stop at the provincial capital’s port as part of a cruise around the western Mediter-
ranean and the Portuguese Atlantic. A good number of the ship’s approximately 300 passengers opted to take a turn around the old part of the city and visit monuments like the Alcazaba fortification and the cathedral. Other groups joined excursions to the Cabo de Gata Natural
Park, the Alpujarra region and Mojacar. This was the sixth time the mighty schooner has visited Almeria. It was also in port in April, July and September. The 189-metre long finelooking ship has capacity for 310 passengers and a crew of 214.
Vulture plucked Bedar from the sea blaze
LOCAL British volunteers with the Equinac marine life rescue took part in the rescue of a Griffon vulture from the sea on the Mojacar coast. Alex Lawson, Adele Land and Clare Flatters Cooper assisted Guardia Civil officers after the crew of a boat plucked the exhausted bird from the water and left it on the beach on Friday. The volunteers and officers took the vulture to the Guardia Civil station in Garrucha and later that day it was collected by officers from the SEPRONA Guardia Nature Protection Service.

MILLIONS of expectant viewers tuned in to Spanish television to watch the electoral debate on Monday. With elections coming up on Sunday, November 10, the presidential candidates were keen to win over voters. The five candidates fiercely defended their corners in a debate that lasted three hours. But many viewers were left disappointed after the contenders reverted to cheap shots and props. Since elections in April, Spanish parties haven’t been able to form a coalition. Thus, resulting in yet another election, in which candidates already seem opposed to working together. Pedro Sanchez, acting president for PSOE, moved slightly away from left-wing politics in a bid to win the centre vote. Left-wing politician and leader of Unidas Ponemos, Pablo Iglesias, reasoned with the president to join forces. On the other side of the spectrum, the right-wing candidates ranged from far-right party Vox to Ciudadanos to centre-right PP. Pablo Casado - running for PP called Pedro Sanchez out at every chance, whilst Vox leader Santiago Abascal stuck to his electoral programme. Ciudadanos representative Albert Rivera, surprised the audience by brandishing a broken paving stone as he addressed Cataluña’s situation. General consensus is that this second election won’t succeed in breaking the deadlock and the televised debate has caused further concerns for Spain.

A FIRE which broke out in Bedar early on Friday afternoon was fully extinguished by Saturday evening, the Andalucia INFOCA firefighting service reported. The blaze started up in a low mountain area where there are a number of properties at around 3pm. INFOCA team members and firefighters from the Bomberos del Levante service worked to put out the flames backed up by support from the air, and by about 11pm had it under control.

THE spookiest night of the year has come and gone and it was a tremendous triumph! The fantastic event hosted by Euro Weekly on the Costa del Sol is sure to go down in Halloween history! The party was terrifyingly amazing and good times were had by all. Most importantly, at the time of going to press, we have raised a staggering €10,016 for ‘Ciudad de los Niños’ orphanage in Malaga, and we hope there will be more to come in. We can’t believe how generous everybody was and what a fantastic outcome for the vulnerable children who need us! They will be so excited when they receive their clothes allowances, toy baskets and toiletry bags for Christmas. Together, we helped make children’s lives better. And that puts a huge smile on our faces! Children and adults of all nationalities came to gether to have fun and raise money. Attendance was through the roof and people just kept arriving! So many people really went all out with their scary costumes, we couldn’t believe how good everybody looked! The decoration was fantastic thanks to all the help received. The guests were amazed when they walked into the venue to be met by a world of ghosts and witches and tombs and spiders. People were immersed in the world of Halloween with so many activities and things to do! A variety of showstopping creations were also dis played throughout the venue. Children were greeted by Paw Patrol and Peppa Pig, had their photos taken inside the sports cars on show and then went inside to continue the fun with lucky dips, apple bobbing, and face painting. The pony rides were also very popular as were the sweet treats galore! The food on offer was delicious including burgers and ribs from BBQ World and people were able to sit down at specially decorated tables to enjoy their meal. Our helpers were outstanding and made sure to keep everyone served and happy. And not to forget the amazing performances that we all danced along to. So many entertainers and stars offered to help out and they brought the roof down! We even had a visit from the mayor of Fuen girola. Everybody danced to the tunes of Masquerade Duo, Frankie Valentine, Ronnie Howells and Danny Ef ford. SUSPECT: Police arrested the 50-year-old father of the dead woman’s child after it was established she died from several knife wounds.
Remains man arrested POLICE have arrested a man who was in a re l a t i o n s h i p w i t h a w o m a n w h o s e re mains appeared in a property in Almeria in the summer. Police discovered the badly decomposed body in a house on Calle Cesar de Almeria on July 15 after the estate administrator reported an appalling stench coming from one of the properties. The fire service forced open the front door revealing the property was completely empty apart from a mattress up against a wall in one of
the bedrooms. It was under the mattress that police officers made the grisly find of what was left of the body wrapped in a blanket. Due to the state of the remains it was at this stage only possible to determine the person’s gender. However, an autopsy and subsequent investigations identified the woman as 39-year-old MDMM. The remains were transferred to the Legal and Forensic Anatomy Institute in Madrid. Initially it was unable to confirm the cause of death, but did find traces
of a second person. Investigators were able to establish that the house was owned by the brother of the man now under arrest and that he had had access to the property. Further investigations showed that 50-yearold MNA had been romantically involved with the dead woman and that they have had a child together, a twoyear-old daughter. The Legal and Forensic Anatomy Institute has now determined the woman met a violent end, and specifically that she died from a number of stab wounds.
Drug clan detentions FOUR members of the same family are under arrest as part of a police operation into illegal marihuana cultivation in Almeria City. The three men and a woman, aged between 33 and 56, all have criminal records police said. The operation resulted in the dismantling of an indoor plantation and the seizure of more than 55 kilos of the drug and nearly 300 marihuana plants. Officers carried out raids on five properties in all. They found illegal connections to the power supply in all them, and reported there had already been a fire in one due to electric overload. Police first launched investigations at the end of August following an electricity supply
company inspection prompted by the power overload, a common indication of illicit indoor marihuana plantations. As the investigation progressed it became clear there was a sizeable plantation in a property in Calle Bahia de San Antonio. Investigators also established that four family members used the house, but lived in other nearby properties. They also established that a couple living in a small house on the same plot had the job of tending to the cultivation and keeping a 24-hour-a-day lookout. Further clues as to what the family were up to included sealed and blacked out windows on the properties and indications they had recently harvested a crop of cannabis.

FIVE people are under arrest after Guardia Civil seized more than 35 kilos of marihuana buds in Bedar. According to the Guardia this is the equivalent of a plantation of around 10,000 cannabis plants. Information about the possible existence of a marihuana plantation covering
an area of at least a hectare on a rural property dedicated to almond production in the Albarico area prompted the launch of investigations in mid-October. A collaboration with Mojacar Local Police led to the seizure of the marihuana and the detention of the property owners, identified as 66-year-old DFGM and 58-year-old MDHY.
Raids on two Bedar properties also led to the discovery of items used for marihuana cultivation and sale. In the final phase of the operation dubbed ‘Darkbox’ Guardia Civil arrested three other individuals in Cartagena in Murcia. The Guardia said further detentions related to the case had not been ruled out.

Drowning eagle saved LOCAL POLICE in Los Gallardos have saved an eagle’s life. The three officers went to help the bird last week after a local resident reported the bird of prey appeared to be drowning in a pool. With the careful manoeuvering of some sticks, the trio managed to get the stricken bird out the water alive, immediately informing Junta de Andalucia Environment officers about the situation and so they could take care of the creature. Los Gallardos Council posted a special thanks to the officers “for the great work you do in our municipality.” The rescued bird is a Bonelli’s eagle, which is a protected species.
Gas leak rescue GUARDIA CIVIL and Local Police went to the assistance of an 81-year-old man virtually passed out at his Berja home due to a leak from a gas bottle. The Guardia were alerted to the situation by a call reporting a strong smell of gas coming from the property. When a patrol got to the house they could see the gas bottle in the sitting room and an elderly man sitting in a chair and looking dazed. With the help of Local Police officers they got the pensioner outside, where they waited for an El Ejido emergency ser vice unit to arrive and take him to the Poniente hospital. The officers also moved the leaking bottle outside the 81-year-old’s home given the risk it represented.

Land development gets go-ahead The provincial government’s governing council has given the go-ahead to the next step in the development of land in Lucainena de las Torres which it hopes will help develop the local tourism sector. THE council approved awarding the works cont r a c t f o r p r o v i d i n g s e rvices in the area which adjoins the Green Way and one of the municip a l i t y ’s a r e a s i n e x p a n sion, Cañada Ines. The Diputacion de Almeria is crossing its fingers this will lead to the construction of a hotel and the establishment of new businesses. The project has a budget of nearly €246,000 and is included in the Provincial Plans. Public Works deputy Oscar Liria said the project is “closely linked to
the generation of employment and boosting tourism, two indispensable elements for settling population in inland municipalities in Almeria Province.” The project will include the construction of three new streets and a roundabout, with the installation of all the bas i c s e r v i c e s : w a t e r, sewage, electricity and telephone, in what is one of the access areas to the municipality. Accesses to three new plots will be created and there is to be a new public space where a 25-me-

What to do in the event of an emergency in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. In Spain there are in effect two groups which most people would understand as being ‘the police.’ The National Police (Policía Nacional) who have jurisdiction in the towns and cities and the Guardia Civil outside the towns and cities. The Local Police are employed by town halls; they basically deal with property found, and enforce local laws. Whilst they have a power of arrest, when exercised they must take the arrested person to the National Police or Guardia Civil according to where the crime took place. National Police and the Guardia Civil deal with all crimes, missing persons etc in their jurisdiction. The National Police also deal with all applications for immigration paperwork, NIEs, EU Citizens Registration and for non EU nationals, Residencia, etc.
The 24 hours national emergency numbers for Spanish speakers are: 091 - police, 061 health emergencies 080 - firefighters. By calling 902 102 112, but only when the perpetrator is unknown, one can give details of certain crimes, including:- burglaries, car theft, theft or loss of documents or belongings. The service is available in English from 9am to 9pm seven days a week, and from 9am to 3pm in French, German and Italian. Having given details of the crime, you must go to the National Police station which you nominate, within 48 hours to make the report using the information supplied on the telephone. In the case of robbery, where threat or force has been used, victims should call 112 at the time for police attendance, or go directly to the police station which covers that area to make a report.

In Spain the operators speak English, French, German and Italian, in addition to Spanish and will liaise with the emergency services when the caller does not speak Spanish. vans and two 20-foot containers. The club issued a big thank you to all its members and volunteers who helped collect and pack the items. On the social front, the big recent event was the Charter Night Ball in the Terraza Carmona function room in Vera. Over 90 smartly dressed gents and glamourous ladies, including members of a visiting Lions group from Beccles in the UK, enjoyed cava and canapes on the terrace and a sumptuous three-course meal. There were awards presentations and local singers Kay Francis and Jack Law provided the entertainment. Vera Lions reported a great response to its charity sales, with donations of all kinds of items and customers browsing and purchasing. These sales help the Lions to assist vulnerable, sick or needy people in the area. The charity sales premises had been closed for refurbishment, but everything has now been smartened up and sales will get underway again on Saturday November 9 with new stock and some sale items. Thinking ahead to Christmas, the Vera Lions Christmas fayre will be at El Jardin in Los Gallardos on December 1 from 10am to 4pm. There will be stalls of all kinds, entertainment, and of course, Father Christmas. Vera and District Lions Club is a varied and friendly group which aims to help the local community and as part of an international organisation anyone in genuine need. If anyone is interested in joining, the club meets at 6pm on the first Wednesday of the month at the Terraza Carmona.

Roquetas mugger under arrest GUARDIA CIVIL have arrested a suspected mugger in Roquetas de Mar. The Guardia detained the 24year-old for threatening a 19year-old and stealing the teenager’s wallet mid-afternoon in a central Roquetas square in September. The victim told the Guardia a
young man riding an electric motorcycle stopped and came up behind him. He claimed the attacker tried to get him to hand over his wallet, and when he refused the mugger punched him. A struggle ensued and the victim ended up on the ground. This gave the attacker the opportunity to grab the teenager’s
wallet from his trouser pocket and make off. The teenager needed medical attention for injuries he suffered during the struggle. Guardia investigations led to the identification of the suspected aggressor as DEG. The victim identified him from photographs as his attacker.
Anglican Church diary THE Anglican Churches of Costa Almeria and Costa Calida have released their upcoming diary dates. On Sunday November 10 the church will welcome everyone to its Remembrance Sunday at Mojacar’s San Pascual Church. The next day, Monday November 11, there is an Armistice Day service at the Llanos del Peral Church near Cucador. Again, everyone is welcome. On Saturday November 16 the church fayre is on in the parking area next to Levante bar in Mojacar Playa 9.30am to 1.30pm.

Tax break for green wheels VILLAJOYOSA Council is set to reward drivers of less contaminating vehicles. The local authority said it will modify its vehicle fiscal regulation as a bonus for drivers of hybrid and electric wheels.Specifically, the council will introduce a 55 per cent discount for vehicles with hybrid engines and 75 per cent for electric. The 75 per cent discount will apply to both kinds for vehicles used for public service. “The council is showing a special interest in the environmental matters which affect us, hence it seems fair to us to reward those who opt for more efficient energies in vehicles,” commented Tax councillor Jose Ramon Ucles.According to the council there are currently 90 hybrid cars and six electric in Villajoyosa, all privately owned.

MALAGA wants to give La Farola maximum cultural protection, as the building is the visual icon for the capital of the Costa del Sol. Malaga’s council has agreed to apply for the declaration of La Farola as Patrimony of Cultural Interest. Other entities that endorse the decision are Malaga University, the College of Architects and Icomos. Two lines of action have been opened to begin the process: one by university professors and another by the town hall. Both propositions confirm the social and institutional support that exists to protect the historic construction. In 2017, the waterfront building marked its 200th anniversary since it was erected. Malaga University has already reached out and gained direct backing from the National Council for International Monuments and Places, the Andalucian Territorial Delegation and many academies and colleges. The motion has gained unanimous support and will proceed as a positive initiative for Malaga.

A BUS has been doing the rounds in Almeria to promote healthy habits and a balanced lifestyle. The Agriculture, Fishing and Food Ministry ‘Gastrobus Mediterraneo’s tour was aimed at encouraging the consumption of foods which feature as part of a Mediterranean diet and doing some kind of moderate exercise every day. The 70sqm vehicle is equipped with audiovisual projection areas and a space for nutrition workshops, training and tastings. The bus incorporates the ‘#alimentosdespaña’ strategy image, which focuses on spreading the work about the quality and variety of Spanish produce given the importance of the national agro-food and fishing sectors. The strategy objective is, the government Sub-delegation said, “to channel synergies between food and other economic sectors, from tourism and gastronomy to health and sport. “Food based on the Mediterranean diet can in this way become a solid cultural, economic and social development connection, as well as being a key factor in good health.”

WORK has started to renovate 380 metres of the La Mata promenade at a cost of €850,000. Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon and councillor for Beaches, Antonio Vidal, attended to see the work, which is being done by Coastal Authority Costas, start. The overall action will transform the promenade, which has 5,400 sqm of paved area, and will be very similar to a section renovated in 2017 in front of the Molino Blanco Urbanisation. The works will involve the demolition of the old wall and the construction of another one made of reinforced concrete to avoid damage caused by storms. Deteriorated wooden planks and the current lampposts will be removed and the entire stretch of promenade will be repaved and have a stainless steel railing installed. The work is expected to take four to five months, which the mayor ‘hopes’ will mean it is complete by Easter 2020.

THE Town Hall of Marratxi has announced its plans to build a new railway theme park in the neighbourhood. Backing a proposal from the Mallorca Steam Railway Club, the Town Hall has given the go ahead for the theme park to be constructed on 25,000 m2 of land that lies between Festival Park and Bauhaus. Some of the features of the park will include level crossings, bridges, a turntable and a tunnel. There will also be a museum for railway and industrial equipment, includinga 1919 Baldwin steam locomotive. The first phase of the project will involve building a station and depot, whilst laying two-thirds of the track which is expected to be completed during the second phase, when viaducts will be added. The Mallorca Steam Railway Club will be in charge of the park’s activities, whilst the Town Hall will be responsible for maintenance, electricity, water and its insurance contract.
Road safety course for schools AROUND 700 students from schools around Rincon de la Victoria have taken part in road safety courses throughout October. The courses have been organised by the Local Police force and are aimed at teaching children aged between eight and 10 the importance of road safety. The courses will be run three days a week in 10 schools in the municipality, with the first course being held at the CEIP Professor Tierno Galvan de Rincon de la Victoria. They are designed to give children a greater understanding of potential situations involved with road use, both as a pedestrian and as a future driver or bike rider.

THE Spanish supermarket chain Dia has just announced that it has plans to expand and wants to fol low the lead of its Russian counter part in order to become market leader. It shares an owner and President (Stephan Du Charme), with Russian chain X5 Retail which was only founded in 1995 but now has an annual turnover in excess of €21.5 billion. The Russian success compares to Dia which has faced losses over the past 18 months, but with a new business plan about to be initiated it has high hopes for the future.

Repsol results looking good RECOGNISED as the most successful oil company in Spain, Repsol record ed a profit of €1.466 billion for the first nine months of the year and wants to use €1.2 billion for divi dends. The actual gross profit is down 32 per cent from the previous year but that figure included significant capi tal gains from sales and this in cludes a decrease in the value of oil stock held. very significant €4.074 billion, mean ing that the underlying business is both thriving and secure. This is why, shareholders can expect that the 2020 dividend could total €1 per unit held in a combination of cash and shares and some of this is thanks to the decision of the board for a 5 per cent amortization of existing share capital. Looking forward, it is increasing its ability to generate electricity from wind and solar power and looks to break the electricity cus tomer base of one million soon.

Normally, the holders of this use are held liable for the upkeep for such spaces, so this would make the individuals responsible for damage caused by oil leaks from their cars. The subsidence, however, is structural and liability would probably fall on the community. We urge you to consult a local lawyer in order to make absolutely sure because some community regulations can specify otherwise.

Profits down AIRLINE group IAG which owns Aer Lingus, BA, Iberia and Vueling has revealed that the recent strike by pi lots at British Airways in September cut its profits during the third quar ter of this year. Willie Walsh, IAG Chief Executive Officer, said: “In quarter three we’re reporting an operating profit of €1,425 million before exceptional items, down from €1,530 million last year. “These are good underlying re sults. As we said in September, our performance has been affected by industrial action by pilots’ union BALPA and other disruption includ ing threatened strikes by Heathrow airport employees.”

The decision was made in order to increase ef ficiency and reduce costs by up to €3.7 billion as

Euro EUR/GBP: Down from £0.89 to £0.86 EUR/USD: Up from $1.09 to $1.10 Trade in the euro was mixed in October as positive Brexit news clashed with persistently gloomy data and fears of a looming reces sion in Germany. The tone of Eurozone data has remained overwhelmingly nega tive over the past couple of months, with lacklustre inflation and PMI figures applying pressure to the single currency. However, in taking some cues from Brexit in October the euro was still able to eke out some modest support, with hopes that the UK would avoid a nodeal sce nario buoying EUR sentiment. We expect the single currency to follow a similar trend through November, with confirmation that

Currency outlook: Pound surges on Brexit progress, US dollar slumps
BREXIT JITTERS: Driving GBP exchange rates to new multi-year lows. Germany entered a recession in the third quarter being offset by lingering Brexit optimism. Pound GBP/EUR: Up from €1.12 to €1.15 GBP/USD: Up from $1.22 to $1.28
October was dominated by a dramatic jump in the pound, with the currency roaring back to life as a result of positive progress in Brexit. This came as Boris Johnson miraculously managed to secure a
new Brexit deal from the EU a surprising development given pre vious reports that talks were on the verge of collapse. However, Johnson has strug gled to get his new deal over the finishing line, with the PM forced to request another Brexit exten sion after he failed to get MPs to back the deal. Sterling stalled in the latter half of the month as a result. Looking ahead, with Brexit de layed but unresolved and the threat of a general election loom ing, it looks like we’re all set for another period of uncertainty. This may take its toll on the pound through the remainder of 2019. US Dollar USD/GBP: Down from £0.81 to £0.77
USD/EUR: Down from €0.91 to €0.90 The US dollar was charac terised by broad weakness over the past month as a riskon mood prevailed, limiting demand for the safehaven ‘Greenback.’ This came amidst positive Brexit headlines and USChina trade optimism, with the two powers coming close to finalising a preliminary trade deal. However, the US dollar also faced pressure on the domestic front, with a sharp slowdown in the US manufacturing sector firming expectations of an Octo ber rate cut from the Federal Re serve. Going forward, the US dollar will face further pressure in the coming weeks if US data contin ues to print poorly.

No, the only clarity to emerge from this lot is that they are a bunch of selfindulgent, incom petent, immature con merchants, interested in nothing further than the preservation of their own utterly worthless skins and unworthy to even represent a flagpole leave alone the flags that adorn them. Come back Mr Fawkes, all is forgiven. To think in days of yore we actually looked up to this rabble, believing they were the undis putable champions of our once great country? How blindly we followed their decisions and ‘leadership’ and were utterly convinced that mere mortals like us could never hope to under stand the workings of ‘The House’ with its proud history and pomp, which has endured over hundreds of years.

Well we do now. Our present day politicians are all a bunch of disgraceful juvenile cess pit dwellers. They are in fact the traitorous and highly dangerous ‘enemy within.’ Most of them would rather side with our opponents than risk losing their privileged positions or a few votes. They are terrified of standing up to the politi
cal correctness, cultural threats and the ever in creasing denial of freedom of speech, which threatens to stifle today’s ingenious GB citizens. As far as this ol’ boy is concerned I’ve never ac tually respected any of them. Consequently I’ve never voted in my life. Only this week there was yet another exam
ple of their incompetence and arrogant under estimation of our intelligence. The Labour con tingency has been ranting on about lowering the voting age to 16. This is of course a blatant effort to gain votes from naive youngsters who have never lived under the left, are impressed by Corbyn’s rhetoric and promises of free hand outs and consequently a mite easier to con than many of their adult compatriots. ‘Young people of today are perfectly capable of making deci sions and taking actions that may affect their fu ture’, the left blathers on. They are of course the same lot who are try ing to return the Daesh bride Shamima Begum to the UK, because she was ‘too young to know what she was doing!’ Get my drift? Nope. Sorry folks, you simply can’t trust, or believe anything that any of them say. Even the so called ‘deal’ that Johnson keeps on about still leaves us firmly entwined with his power mad fellow cronies across the channel. If I were to vote at all it would be for The Brexit Party. Full of charm A HUB of Catalan culture in its own right, Girona is packed to the brim with museums, galleries and stunning buildings. the medieval walls, known as the Passeig de la Muralla, that border the city centre and offer great views. Girona has one of the best preserved Jewish quar ters in all of Europe called El Call, which is a maze of nar row, cobbled streets that look just how they would have 500 years ago when the Jewish population occu pied this area of the city. Another highlight that
should not be missed is Girona Cathedral, which has a picturesque long staircase leading to the entrance that was used as a location to film Game of Thrones. The city has its own small airport, but there is also a highspeed train service that links Girona to the Catalan capital of Barcelona, so it makes a perfect destination for a quick day trip.

OCTOBER and at the air show promoted as the biggest business aviation show in the world Gulfstream added to its fleet of six private and business jet models with the presentation of the allnew G700 at the NBAABACE air show in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. The launch of the G700 is certainly an event as is the NBAABACE which over three days attract ed some 23,000 aviation professionals from all over the world. Gulfstream’s G700 will carry up to 19 passengers and sleep 10. In daylight pas sengers will be able to view the world through one of 20 panoramic oval windows, flying at an altitude of 15,545 metres [51,000 feet], a com mercial airliner will fly at a far lower altitude in fact and have a cabin pressure far low than the G700. Passengers in the G700 will experience at 15,545 metres a cabin pressure equivalent to 1,478. Besides the lowest cabin altitude the cab in is ‘whisperquiet’ and filled with fresh air. The lighting on board is also designed to promote a healthy experience with the lighting system that mimics the circadian rhythm from sunrise to sunset, further enhancing the flight experience.

Leaving aside the flight deck, and concentrat ing on the cabin the G700 boats the tallest, widest and longest cabin in the industry. With up to five living areas, option an ultra galley with a passenger lounge or a crew compartment, a six place dining room that doubles up as a confer ence room, even a master suite with ensuite bathroom and shower, two windows and even a wardrobe. Gulfstream would and do argue that the G700 is the new Gulfstream Flagship per haps also of the industry.
Gulf stream has built 2,850 jets since the company was founded in 1957, supported globally with specialised aviation engineers fo cused on keeping the airframes flying, on demand. At that time named the Grumman Air craft Engineering Co, the first Gulfstream design was so named because so many of the Grum man executives holidayed in Florida where the oceanic Gulf Stream flows northward along the coast before heading off across the Atlantic to warm the shores of north west Europe. Many a Gulfstream is in the service of heads of state as well as being configured for special missions such as medical evacuation and high altitude at mospheric research. Almost 200 Gulfstream aircraft serve govern
ments in nearly 40 countries around the world. The G700 has a maximum range of 7,500 nautical miles or 13,800 kilometres, truly a global reach. MILLENIALS (those born between 1980 and the mid-1990s and who, from next year, are expected to be the dominant age sector in the global workforce for the first time), are reportedly fuelling a crisis in the workplace. Young employees flit from company to company, unwilling to stay in any job that doesn’t meet their expectations. Like the NHS and police work, for example. Police forces preparing for the govern ment’s ambitious recruitment drive have identified a formidable challenge in hiring millennials. Today’s recruits seem to have been ‘wrapped in cotton wool,’ are rou tinely ‘shocked’ that police officers are ex pected to work nights and weekends, and ‘do not like confrontation.’ For some, this is ‘Generation Entitle ment.’ For others, millenials are simply re sponding to the world they were born in
MILLENIALS: Desire a better work/life balance and training. to: one of peace and prosperity. They seem to have it all a better work/life bal ance and training, for instance and there are no rules of how to deal with it be cause, basically, we’ve never been here before. Most notable among millenials is the shift from a desire for ‘things’ to a desire for ‘experiences.’ But whether it’s social media, the selfie craze, influencers or the inability to stick with one job for more than five minutes, what you end up with is a generation that is constantly seeking to add experiences, apparently without much regard to which have value and which don’t. You don’t gain ‘experiences’ by taking the same damn shot as every body else has taken of Mykonos or the Grand Canyon through the lens of a phone (though they think you do).
Fundamentally, the desire for a better work/life balance and training is sound and works for whatever generation we’re talking about. But ultimately, for some jobs, we need people dedicated to their vocation, who are willing to see past crea ture comforts because they want to do what they think is right, even if it means personal hardship. Perhaps there’s a lack of that going around in this Brexit/Trump era, and it’s not just confined to the millennials... MEAT FREE ESCHEWING meat on moral grounds is 100 per cent applaudable as most of the animals we eat today live in misery and die miserably so we can pick up bargains in supermarkets. That’s one thing, and I admire the vegetari ans who shun bacon sandwiches surely one of life’s greatest culinary inventions because they don’t want Piglet or Babe on their con sciences. Nevertheless, the fact remains that we are omnivores with bodies and innards designed to eat a little bit of everything, which brings me to vegans. My vegetarian friends are all normal, but the vegans verge on the hysteri cal and accusatory. Imagine my pleasure, then, on reading recently that vegans are prone to depression and wait for it cannabis. Says it all, as far as I’m concerned but at least they can smoke it or make bis cuits with it safe in the knowledge that no an imals were involved in its production. Stephanie Maxwell
Over indulgence I READ in the Euro Weekly News not long ago that the Benidorm fiestas organisers want to shorten the route for ‘peñas’ clubs’ pa rade on the first day. Most are tipsy before the parade starts and blind drunk by the time it finishes, it seemed from the article. I have lived for many years in the Mari na Baja although not in Benidorm and from what I have seen, rowdiness and overindulgence in alcohol are fiestas req uisites. It is usually goodhumoured and in all my time here, I haven’t seen conflict or anything approaching a fight. The piece you printed came to mind on reading about a drunken British cou ple tussling and punching each other on the Alicante airport shuttle bus taking them to the terminal.bThe locals here might occasionally drink too much but they just get merrier, not like the British and northern Europeans who get morose and then aggressive. HYDRAULIC fracturing - commonly known as fracking - has recently come under the spotlight after the government halted the activity in the UK. This technique has been the subject of controversy for many years. Scientists and ecologists alike believe fracking to be highly polluting and dangerous for society and the environment. To be aware of the risks, it’s important to understand how the process works. Fracking begins with drilling down into the earth and injecting fluids at a very high pressure. The liquid is primarily water but it also contains sand, chemicals and thickening agents. This fluid creates cracks in the deep-rock formations and natural gas will flow freely, allowing companies to collect it. Natural gas helps reduce greenhouse gasses as it replaces coal and burns cleaner, emitting only half as much carbon dioxide. However, experts believe this benefit is outweighed by the environmental impacts of the activity. The main problem is the contamination of surface and underground water with chemicals scientists believe to be carcinogenic. Increased earthquakes are another by-product and, in the UK, multiple earth tremors were triggered, finally causing work to halt. In Spain, the practice is mostly prohibited and in 2016, the five companies with licences gave them up freely. In the UK, the practice has now been prohibited after £32 million was spent with no energy in return.

For many, the cooler temperature is a welcome relief to the blazing heat and humidity of the summer. But the biggest organ in the body the skin has already started getting goose bumps. Skin is our protection against external conditions and forms a protective barri er over the body’s surface. The epider mis is the outermost layer and makes sure to keep water in the body and in fectious germs from entering. Seasonal changes can irritate and ex acerbate existing skin conditions. A big percentage of the population is affected by some type of skin ailment in varying degrees of severity. Wind and cold ag gravates dry and inflamed skin. Existing conditions can react badly to changes in routine, for example, more layers of clothing and temperature variations from outdoors to indoors. For people who experience rosacea, the summer months can be a bad time of year. On the other hand, a wintery cli
mate can be problematic for eczema, psoriasis and acne. Even people with a healthy dermis will notice red cheeks, taut skin and cracked lips. People with preexisting problems will often experi ence flareups. Cold temperatures make the skin’s pores tighter and reduces blood circula tion, thus diminishing natural oils known as sebum. Sebum is essential in forming a protective layer and traps moisture to avoid the skin from drying out. Consequences of less sebum are seen by acne sufferers; whose skin depends on the substance to block the entry of bacteria in pores. During the winter, bacteria penetrates pores easily and can result in outbreaks. Patients who have to deal with eczema, psoriasis and atopic dermatitis generally complain about increased irritation, flaky skin and inflammation. Although the effects of winter cannot be completely avoided, experts do rec ommend following a series of habits that can benefit the skin. An important thing to avoid is scald
ing hot baths and showers as the heat strips the skin of its natural oils. A short er and cooler shower will help and using a moisturising cream straight after wards is a must. Exposure to hot environments such as airconditioned cars or rooms with dry air can further de hydrate the epidermis. A conscious effort should be made to drink plenty of water and supplement ing diet with Omega 3 and 6 oils can reduce inflammation. Cosying up to the radiator or fireplace will al so cause dryness, a humidifier will combat this and add moisture to the home. A few other tips to fight the frost include picking a soothing lip balm, ditching irritating clothing and al ways wearing gloves to protect hands. Wash ing up gloves are again advised when touching chemicals or grease.

These disruptors are chemicals that can inter fere with the body’s hor monal balance. At certain doses they can cause very grave illnesses and conse quences on an otherwise healthy person. Ailments can include infertility, can cer, thyroid problems, loss of memory, autism, diabetes and obesity. The danger with en docrine disruptors is that we are constantly surrounded by them. Chemicals in com mon household objects con tain the dangerous sub stances. One of the most studied disruptors is Bisphe nol A or BPA. It can be found in plastic bottles, food con tainers, fragrances, cleaning products, DVDs, the lining of food cans, receipts and toys, among others. The compound is the start ing material for polycarbon ate plastics and in 2015 about four million tonnes were produced, making it one of the most produced chemicals worldwide.

The European Union put in place regula tions and banned its use in baby bottles, although the European Food Safety Au thority has declared that the substance poses no threat to consumers of any age. However, many re searchers continue to ex plain the risks associated
with this endocrine disrup tor and in 2017 the Euro pean Chemicals Agency an nounced that BPA should be included as a substance of high concern. Babies and young children could be among the most affected, as at this young age hor mones play a big role in de velopment. Both female and male re productive systems suffer a big impact with lower amounts of sperm and testosterone in men and early puberty and a reduc
tion of fertility in women. In respect to mental wellbe ing and the brain, it could possibly cause anxiety, hy peractivity and aggression as well as learning disabili ties. Higher quantities of BPA are associated to hyperten sion and heart illnesses. It can lead to an increase in weight and the appearance of Type II diabetes. pealing to make use of cau tion and ask to progressively reduce these types of sub stances in consumer prod ucts until investigations can offer definitive proof. The World Health Organi sation has revealed there are more than 800 types, al though the number could be much higher. The associa tion has named them as a global threat that needs to
be carefully vigilated. Nicolás Olea, professor of medicine at Granada Uni versity, is one of the most knowledgeable experts in the study of these chemi cals. He maintains that sci entific evidence of their negative impact is undeni able and overwhelming. He reiterates that European control needs to be even stricter in the future.

Gut health chaos A new study has found that up to 50 per cent of common medication negatively affects gut health. Researchers at Maastricht University in the Netherlands explain that the discovery can explain many of pharmaceutical’s side effects, such as obesity. THE investigation showed that certain drugs changed the com position of gut bacteria, leading
to a risk of intestinal infection and weight gain. Taking into ac count common drug cate
gories, at least 18 of the 41 studied had notable repercus sions on the digestive system. The microbiome inside the intestines is made up of thou sands of different types of bac teria. These organisms are es sential in maintaining many health aspects such as a strong immune system, a healthy heart and regulating weight. These microbes work together as another organ in the body and can sometimes weigh be tween one and two kilos. If gut composition isn’t bal anced and healthy many ail ments can start to appear. Con stant fatigue, skin irritation, food intolerances and an upset stomach are just a few of the consequences a debilitated mi crobiome can have. For the study, scientists analysed 2,000 stool samples from healthy people and those that presented irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease. They then com
pared the composition of non drug user’s guts and people regularly on medication. Four of the drug cate gories were revealed to have the biggest im pact: proton pump in hibitors used for indi gestion laxatives, antibiotics and met formin, the form of treat ment for diabetes Type 2. Metformin users had high er levels of Ecoli, a bacterium that can cause deadly infec tions, whilst those on PPI pro duced a larger amount of fatty acids. Antidepressants where also on the list, as the pills were seen to produce high levels of Eubacterium ramulus, that can lead to infections. However, some helpful steps can be taken to improve and maintain the essential bacteria. Stress is one of the biggest cul prits and can be lowered by walking, meditating, decreasing caffeine intake or doing activi
ties. Quality of sleep is an other guilty party and it should be a pri ority to ensure seven to eight hours of rest. Diet can be cared for by eating slowly, staying hy drated and eating probiot ic foods or supplements.

The strangest thing... MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I WAS in the UK last week and, once again, was reminded why I love living here! Hour journeys taking two and a half hours because the M25 was practi cally redundant just after the ribbon cutting ceremony. A simple cup of cof fee costing more than a meal here. OK maybe that’s a slight exaggeration but £6 for two coffees is almost the price of a menu del dia. Oh and the weather was, well, English. I went to a couple of places to eat. Nando’s was one where I actually like the food and, like many, they have free WiFI. But, before you can use their WiFi you have to give them shedloads of in formation and agree to their terms which, to be honest, I can’t be arsed to read. So, after going through that I log on successfully, but the signal is so weak that I can’t even check my email. All I get is the spinning ‘I’m really try ing’ wheel. So now I go back to 4G and as soon as I turn oFf the Nando’s WiFi
the first email I get is from them! An email I couldn’t even receive whilst us ing their WiFi! This email tells me that I’m now just one click from activating my Nando’s account. I don’t want a Nando’s account thank you. I’m not clicking anything. It also informs me the benefits of said account is I can order online for delivery. Surely it will be cold by the time it gets to Spain! And here is the best bit I can con nect to their WiFi whenever I fancy ex cept I can’t because the signal is crap!!! Another thing I noticed in a few places is how waiters, in particular, re act when you are paying with a credit card. They give you the machine and then the strangest thing happens when they ask you to put in your pin number. If they are sort of standing in the vicinity of the machine it almost looks like we are about to play a game of hide and seek. In one place I thought he was going to pull out a blindfold to cover his eyes. It’s hard to explain, but next time you pay a bill at a restaurant table, watch how your server reacts when you go to enter your pin number. It’s hilari ous! I think the next time it happens I’m going to put the tablecloth over my head and the machine!

• Ingredients 50g unsalted butter cut into three equal chunks 1 small white onion finely chopped 250g fresh mushrooms (I use button mushrooms) 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves or 1/4 tsp dried thyme leaves (if you don’t want it herby, miss this out) 1/2 tsp salt 1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper 40g plain flour (I mixed it with a bit of milk to make sure I didn’t have lumps) 600 ml chicken stock (I used a couple of stock cubes)

Fast creamy mushroom soup AS the nights draw in and the temperature drops, what better way to warm up than tucking into a delicious bowl of soup. Mushroom soup has to be one of the fastest to make. As well as being easy to prepare, it cooks in minutes. Served with crusty bread, it is definitely a winter warmer worth trying. There are many mushroom types around, but I like to use button mush rooms and keep everything as pale as I can whilst cooking which results in a really creamy looking soup. The ingredients below make about two to three bowls of soup. 150 ml of double or whip ping cream if using a lighter cream, mix with a couple teaspoons of corn flour be fore adding to soup • Instructions In a large saucepan, melt one chunk of the butter over mediumhigh heat. Add the onions and cook,
stirring, until soft, about three minutes. Add the mushrooms, (thyme if us ing), salt, and pepper and the second chunk of butter. Cook, stirring regularly, until the mushrooms are soft, but still pale in colour, about five minutes. Add the last chunk of butter and stir to melt. Add the flour and
cook through (this is where I have already mixed the flour with a little milk, so it doesn’t go lumpy), stirring constantly for about a minute. Add the stock and keep stirring as it comes back to the boil. Once cooked, blend with a stick blender until smooth.
If you like small chunks of mushroom in your soup you can remove a few of the mushrooms with a bit of soup to puree very slightly and return to the pan. Finally, add the cream and cook for a further minute or two to heat. Taste and adjust seasoning. Enjoy!

High speed testing has already proven DBX to repeatedly exceed 180mph, with final top speed and ac celeration figures being set within the closing stages of the testing process. As highlighted in a video release, DBX’s vocal chorus has also been honed by the brand’s dedicated acoustic team. With a focus on creating a broader, more solid acoustic note, DBX’s exhaust system has been tuned to reflect a deep bass with increasing midtones, creating true auditory exhil aration, particularly in more sporting drive modes. Competition Excellent play in focuses the mind Avalon Open
THE recent Two Wood Triple staged at Cabrera Lawn Bowl ing Club was a competition which really focused the mind. Participants in the threeday competition really had to con centrate as they had only two woods per player. As always there were some very interest ing rounds, none more so than the two semifinals. One went to the very last end and the other went to an extra end as the match was drawn after 18 ends.

THE Almeria Bowling Club 2019 ALBC 321 Avalon Open Challenge Cup produced excel lent play. This competition was played with a 321 roundrobin format, where teams of three players play six ends of triples, six of pairs and finally six ends of singles over a set period of two hours. The competition was an open and was well supported by players from Cabrera, Indalo, Mojacar, Zurgena and Almeria bowling clubs. The 16 teams were drawn and divided into two groups, A and B, played over October 27, 28 and 29. On the afternoon of Tuesday 29, the winners of group A played group B to decide the winner and second place. The run nersup of both groups played for third and fourth place. The quality of play was excellent throughout in spite of the high temperatures. The winners in what was a close competi tion were ALBC Group B, Adrian Davies and Nigel and Karen Rushton over another ALBC team, Group A, formed by Graham Patrick, Wayne Roberts and Cath Patrick.
WINNERS: Adrian Davies and Karen and Nigel Rushton. In the third and fourth playoffs the winners were again from ALBC, John and Christina Fitzgerald and Chris Ewer, over a team from Cabrera BC made up of Austin Crilly and Carol and Dave Walters. ALBC Captain Chris Brown thanked all those who played and for their support during the three days. Special thanks went to Tony Lear for running the competition.
