EXPECTATIONS EXCEEDED The latest edition of Almeria’s ultra-endurance ‘La Desertica’ challenge surpassed expectations. A RECORD 6,000 competitors took part in Saturday’s event, considered one of the toughest of its kind in the country. Many of the competitors were athletes of the highest calibre, and around one in seven had travelled from elsewhere in Spain to the province to take part. Setting off from Almeria City first thing in the morning, participants had to attempt a gruelling 70 kilometres on foot in a maximum of 16 hours or 100 kilometres on mountain bikes in 12 hours. They went through Huercal de Almeria, Viator, Pechina, Enix and Felix, as well as going up past the Sierra Alhamilla Baths, crossing the finishing line in Roquetas de Mar’s Los Bajos park. Mountain biking champion was first-time La Desertica competitor Jose Marquez, who covered the route in a few minutes under four and a half

Last year’s fastest women in the mountain biking category, Julieta Escudero, repeated her triumph, with a time of just over five hours, 40 minutes. The speediest on foot in this, the third edition of the La De-
sertica, was Jose Luis Martinez. He recorded an impressive six hours, two minutes and 53 seconds. The first woman across the line in this category was Mirian Carrasco, in just short of seven hours and 48 minutes.
The Almeria ultra-endurance was organised by the Alfonso XIII Legion Brigade based in Viator with the support of the provincial government and the councils of themunicipalities the course went through.

Pulled from burning house GUARDIA CIVIL officers rescued a woman and her dog from a burning house in Albanchez. A call to the Albox station from the woman’s mother in Barcelona saying she feared her daughter living in the Calesas district of Albanchez could be in some kind of danger first alerted the Guardia to the situation. A patrol rushed to the area of just a handful of properties, having to knock on doors to find where the woman lived. Officers tried shouting to her from outside to get her attention, but when they failed to get any response they forced their way in, discovering there was a ‘large’ fire on the upstairs floor. Officers had to crawl their way to her to avoid inhaling smoke, then lift her out. It was while they were evacuating her that she told them her pet Yorkshire terrier was still in one of the upstairs rooms. Despite the build-up of smoke, one of the officers dashed up and scooped up the little dog. Once the woman and her pet were safely outside the officers grabbed a fire extinguisher from their vehicle and a hose provided by one of the neighbours to try and douse the flames while waiting for firefighters and a medical team to arrive. After around three hours a large part of the fire was out. The woman was taken to Huercal-Overa hospital.

Record breaking veggie mosaic ALMERIA has gained its second Guinness World Record, this time with the largest ever heartm o s a i c m a d e e n t i re l y from fruit and vegetables. Twenty tonnes of provincially produced tomatoes, broccoli, peppers, aubergine, pumpkins and courgettes went into creating the 603.15sqm green heart at the municipal fairground. It was a colourful feast for the eyes when it was finished, featuring a bright yellow indalo at its centre and accompanied by the message +Salud Almeria. Guinness World organisation official judge Anna Orford had come from London to verify Almeria’s effort had snatched the record from India, which held the title for five years with a 480sqm heart. Receiving the certificate on behalf of the city council and the vegetable company behind the initiative, Almeria mayor Ramon Fernandez-Pachecocommented, “today we have once again taken a step forward in the aim of gaining renown as the gastronomic

initiative, and took the opportunity to emphasise the importance of a healthy diet, featuring fruit and veg like that for the giant heart. The recordbreaking mosaic heart attempt was staged to mark World Food Day and as part of this year’s extensive programme of Almeria 2019 Gastronomy Capital of Spain promotional
events. The mayor also underlined the success of the gastronomy capital status in putting Almeria on the map as a foodie tourist destination. Back in June Almeria made it into the Guinness World Records for the biggest ever gazpacho, snatching the tile from Portugal with 9,800 litres of the cold soup.

Theft sentence AN Almeria court sentenced a man to four years and nine months in prison for stealing €1,150 from a Roquetas de Mar gift shop and for attacking and injuring the owner’s brother when he went after the thief to tr y and get the money back.
Fire damage A FIRE in the Nijar Scenic Arts Centre caused considerable damage. It took firefighters several hours to extinguish the blaze, which destroyed part of the stage and the back area of the structure, the smoke filling both floors and leaving a film of soot.
Elderly poor JUST over 22 per cent of over 65-year-olds in Almeria Province are at risk of poverty, according to the AIS Group consultancy’s Habits Big Data analysis based on National Institute of Statistics information. This compares with a national average of 15.6 per cent.
Work deaths THE number of work-related deaths in the province so far this year is up 20 per cent on 2018 to 12, the CCOO and UGT trade unions reported. The unions maintain Almeria has the highest work-related accident rate of the eight Andalucia provinces.

Benefits swindle POLICE made eight arrests after uncovering a Social Security fraud running into tens of thousands of euros. Police said the case revolved around a company operating in the construction sector which had defrauded Social Security to the tune of more than €77,000 for the non-payment of RETA quotas for self-employed workers and for the wrongful receipt of SEPE (State Employment Public Service) benefits. Police said the investigation was launched on the back of an Almeria Employment and Social Security Provincial Inspection report. There was no recognised activity or register of invoicing, pointing to a phantom firm. An examination of all the documentation confirmed to investigators that said company’s given address in Garrucha was fictitious and it had been constituted purely to make false registrations with Social Security and to simulate labour relations for the purpose of obtaining all kinds of benefits.

Tarragona has four groups who take part, and the city lives and breathes the tower building spirit and ambience like never before. To build the towers, everyone needs to be there and in the right place. If one person is missing, it doesn’t get built. ‘Tarragona, City of Human Towers’ is a pioneering initiative launched in 2013 with the aim of boosting tourism by bringing both the people of the city, those who were not in one of the groups, and tourists closer to the human tower building world. At the same time, it capitalises on one of the country’s main cultural and traditional resources, the human towers, which are declared an Intangible Heritage of Humanity. DON’T forget - we can all enjoy an extra guilt-free hour in bed on Sunday as the clocks go back at 3am (Spanish time). But on the down side, we will soon notice the dark nights rapidly drawing in. The aim of changing the clocks in spring and autumn is to make better use of light. When we move clocks backward an hour in the autumn, we are effectively transferring an hour of daylight from evening to morning, when it is arguably more useful to more people. The opposite thing happens in the spring. This year the European parliament voted to scrap daylight saving time by 2021. If ratified, it could throw up yet another Brexit-related headache. If the UK leaves the EU before 2021 and the bloc goes ahead with its plan to scrap DST (Daylight Saving Time), a situation could arise in which for half the year Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland would be in different time zones.

The mayor insisted the plot is the only one which “brings together all the technical and legal requirements for executing the investment,” adding, “it is incomprehensible that having the land available and with the entry approved since 2018, Huercal-Overa is left without such a necessary new school.” A local authority statement also said the mayor informed the Junta’s Almeria delegate Maribel Sanchez at a meeting in September of the main investments she believed HuercalOvera required, which aside from the school were a new health centre and new purification plants. The mayor expressed the opinion that a change of government at regional level should not have affected the investment plans, commenting, “priorities have to be above political colour.”
Fresh crop of hash arrests FOUR people are under arrest following two busts for illegally growing marihuana. Police detained a 48-year old man and his son-in-law after finding 124 marihuana plants, as well as two hunting rifles, during searches of a couple of properties in the Pescaderia area of Almeria City. Officers also seized a bag of marihuana and hash buds, abundant ammunition for the rifles, and the usual equipment for indoor plantations. The police said the pair lived in one of the properties and used the other one as a green-
house for marihuana cultivation. Investigations into a possible illegal indoor plantation in the neighbourhood began in the summer. Surveillance activities and the waft of the drug emanating from the property confirmed the suspicions. The two men now face charges of a crime against public health and defrauding the power supply. Meanwhile, the Guardia Civil reported they had arrested 44-year old B D and 30-yearold O N A after discovering nearly 300 marihuana plants in
a property in La Mojonera and an illegal electricity connection. Complaints from local residents about the smell of marihuana and the constant noise from fans and air-conditioning units operating 24 hours a day prompted the Guardia operation. Discreet surveillance revealed a possible defrauding of the power company and the individuals responsible for the plantation. Again, as well as the plants and the plantation paraphernalia officers came across a firearm and ammunition.
Good recycling record RESIDENTS of Adra have recycled nearly 18 tonnes of textiles so far this year. The local council praised the public for doing their bit to care for the planet and to help the less fortunate by depositing unwanted clothes, footwear, blankets, sheets, towels and so on in the 15 green containers distributed around Adra town and in outlying districts, including La Caracola, Puente del Río and La Curva. The council explained a company provides a service free of charge to the municipality to

HUERCAL-OVERA Council has expressed disappointment in the regional government’s draft Budget for 2020, claiming it does not include necessary investments for the municipality. According to the local authority, the Andalucia administration’s budget due for approval in December features the new courts “but forgets commitments already made by the Junta, such as the case of the new school.” The council maintains the 2018 budget had an entry of €3.8 million for the construction of the school in the Education regional ministry’s plan to remove prefabricated classrooms, and that all that was required was for the local authority to make a plot available to put the project out to tender. “Since July we have been waiting

QUESTIONS about how the old Mojacar was founded and where the inhabitants came from have yet to be answered, archaeologists who worked on the latest site dig have revealed. Speaking at a presentation of the preliminary results of this summer’s excavations on ‘Mojacar La Vieja,’ Jose Maria Martin Civantos, the director of the University of Granada’s Biocultural MEMOLab Laboratory and Medieval History Department team, said it remained to be established whether the settlement came about as a natural grouping of the nearby inhabitants or because the Almoravid dynasty who on building a castle invited people to settle there for political and military reasons. This summer’s activities were the second MEMOLab excavation campaign on the site, which had the support of Mojacar Council and the Valparaiso Foundation. Opening the presentation at the municipal multiple uses centre, Tourism councillor Emmanuel Agüero welcomed the large audience. He also thanked the owners of land around the

different areas of study and the confirmation Mojacar La Vieja was established in the 12th century as a rural settlement, which then took on a more urban character with the administration of its territory. It was abandoned in the second half of the 13th century in favour of the village’s current site. MEMOLab hopes to continue with
the excavations next year. A mediumterm research project will be presented to the Ministry of Culture on how and what form future investigations will take. A further challenge is the need to consolidate and conserve what has already been found. According to Civantos, they already have a wealth of interesting scientific data which is in demand not only provincially, but throughout Spain. There is also significant demand for information from around the world, as is evident from the archaeologists from 22 countries who have participated in the project. A council statement said a strategy is now needed to preserve and enhance Mojacar la Vieja and its heritage. The council maintained a plan is required to ensure the excavations can be visited safely, without causing damage, as well as to create a museum and information centre in the town to display findings. “Knowledge of the historical, cultural and social background of the town and its surrounding area is a valuable future project, for not only Mojacar, but for the entire region,” the council commented.

AIMS: The campaign seeks to raise awareness about the importance of the correct disposal of electrical and electronic equipment and the impact on society and the environment.
Mojacar joins ‘save the planet’ campaign MOJACAR has joined a regional ‘save the planet’ campaign aimed at promoting the reuse and recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment. Running over the next two months, the campaign seeks to raise awareness about the importance of the correct disposal of these kinds of items and the impact on society and the environment. Councillor with responsibility for the Environment, Emmanuel Agüero, welcomed the two environmental specialists who have been around the village and the beach area hand-
ing out brochures and giving out general information to residents and visitors. Their aim is to impress on the public the advantages of correct waste management as well as the avoidance of accumulating old technological items in the home. It is estimated that the average person generates about five kilos of technological waste every year. Last year’s campaign recovered 42 million kilos, approximately 20 million more than in 2015, which the specialists consider a major change in awareness. Elderly residence taking shape A NEW residence for the elderly in Vera is taking shape. Last week local mayor Jose Carmelo Jorge Blanco visited the site accompanied by a number of councillors and representatives of the promoter behind the project. During the visit the Spanish flag was raised at the site to celebrate the completion of the construction of the building structure without any workplace accidents. The future residency located near the Vera bus station on a municipally owned 2,400sqm site will have capacity for 120 residents. Facilities will include communal dining rooms and lounges, and interior therapeutic gardens. The council said five of the residency places will be made available to the council under a 50-year administrative concession as a fee for the land concession. The places will, the local authority said, be offered to people at risk of social exclusion.

Suspect arrested THE Guardia Civil have arrested a suspect believed to have attacked a young man with a broken bottle during a brawl in San Isidro in Nijar, Spanish press reported. The 20-year-old victim has credited Guardia Civil officers with saving his life after they discovered him lying on the ground at a petrol station in a pool of blood with a gash to his neck. They put pressure on the wound until the medical emergency team arrived.

UPGRADES to country lanes in Huercal-Overa are on track. Under the provincial government’s Rural Road Plan works are being carried out on some three kilometres of lanes at an overall cost of €278,000. Diputacion de Almeria Public Works deputy Oscar Liria recently visited the municipality to see how the infrastructure project was progressing. Accompanied by Huercal-Overa mayor Francisca Lourdes Fernandez, former mayor and now provincial New Technology, Security and Housing deputy Domingo Fernandez, and several local councillors, Liria went to take a look at the works on the road near El Pilar. Measures being implemented include resurfacing, improve-
ments to drainage and ditches, and repainting road lines. The Huercal-Overa mayor took the opportunity to comment on “the importance of collaborating between administrations to carry out plans and measures which mean improvements for our residents.” Fernandez pointed out the municipality covers an extensive area and that country lanes are important for significant numbers of residents and agricultural workers who use them daily. As well as the El Pilar lane, roads in Las Minas, Urcal, La Fuente, Los Cocones, La Hoya, Las Labores, Los Carmonas, Los Serenos, Los Navarros, Las Labores, Los Toyos and El Saltador are benefiting from the works.

Seafood star in spotlight GARRUCHA’S star seafood product is in the spotlight this weekend as the municipality stages the second Festival of the Red Prawn. Running tomorrow, Friday October 25, to Sunday from midday to midnight, the gastro festival will feature conferences, roundtable discussions and cooking demonstrationswith some of the best chefs in Andalucia, as well as food tastings and live music.
As you would expect there will be a variety of tasty tapas featuring red prawns and other locally caught fish and seafood as the main ingredients on offer. Think along the likes of prawn pate with pistachio cream, or prawn, pineapple and mango kebab with a mustard and honey sauce. Speaking at the presentation of the festival, Garrucha mayor Maria Lopez highlighted the “involvement and effort” of local bars and restaurants in
the event and the collaboration between the local council and the hospitality sector on the festival organisation. The mayor also said they had “learnt lessons” from the first red prawn celebration last year, hence we have perfected some details and improved the festival.” All the festival action will take place in a giant 2,500sqm marquee next to Garrucha port.

BEDAR student Toby Desmond has made it to Costa Rica as a volunteer with charity Operation Raleigh following intense weeks of fundraising work to gain the cash for the trip. The teenager did beach cleans, car washes, translations and worked in his parents’ Olive Properties office. He even put the money he received as 18th birthday gifts towards the cause. Just before he set off on the ‘once in a lifetime’ experience Toby expressed his enormous gratitude to all those who had helped him turn his gap year idea into a reality. “I would like to thank everyone, all the local businesses and friends and family, who helped me raise my target of €4,500. I spent five weeks working hard on fundraising events, but couldn’t have done it without the support of the businesses and people here. “I have an exciting expedition ahead of me,” Toby added, confessing he was also a little bit nervous and expected to have very little contact with the outside world while he is away. No doubt Toby’s parents Jo and Tim will be keeping a close track on the Operation Raleigh Facebook page and Instagram accounts to try and keep up

My Spanish will help as other members of my team won’t speak it”, added bilingual Toby. Choosing to volunteer for Operation Raleigh was an obvious choice for Toby when it came to deciding what to do with his time between school and university. It was, the youngster told EWN, “the perfect match: a charity in a Spanishspeaking country with major plans to make a difference. “I just knew it was the one for me.”
Female football first MORE than 30 girls have signed up for Cuevas del Almanzora’s first Feminine Football 11 Sport School. The council said the launch of the new school reflected its commitment to gender equality and to giving women the opportunity to play and compete in the federated league, and the aim of firmly establishing women’s football in the municipality.
The school is one of several novelties the council has launched this year as part of its sport school programme for local youngsters. This season there are also petanque and triathlon schools. More than 800 children and teenagers are registered in the 75 sports schools and workshops in Cuevas town and the municipality’s outlying districts.

BREXIT BRIEF WHILST opponents of Brexit accused Boris Johnson of throwing a childish tantrum, Scotland’s highest court delayed a decision on Monday as to whether the prime minister had fully complied with a law requiring him to ask for a Brexit extension. The situation last Saturday was that he sent an unsigned letter to Brussels requesting an extension (which may or not be agreed to) plus a signed letter effectively requesting that the EU declines to extend. Representatives of the British government stated at the Court of Session that this fulfilled its legal obligations under the Benn Act but the leading judge, Lord Carloway said the case should be continued until it was clear that all of the obligations under the legislation had been ‘complied with in full.’ In theory, if the court rules against the prime minister, he could be sentenced to prison, although he may well decide to change tactic in such a scenario.

Tourist interest growing TOURIST interest in Adra is growing, if the number of visits to the municipal tourist office this summer are anything to go by. The council said nearly 1,000 people had dropped into the tourist office located in the Fishing Museum for information on the area in June, July, August and September. A further 1,000 had gone there to take part in one of the guided tours of Adra. Tourism councillor Elisa Fernandez commented that she was “very satisfied” with the numbers, which she said “are increasing every year.” She pointed out the tourist office had received nearly 400 more requests for information this summer than last year; in September alone the office visitor numbers were up by 70 on the same month of 2018. “For this government team developing tourism is

Active ageing CUEVAS DEL ALMANZORA has launched active ageing workshops in Muleria, Palomares and Guazamara. The Social Well-being and Equality department workshops, which will run until June, are aimed at giving the elderly opportunities for training and active participation in social life through activities, classes and expression. Social Well-being councillor Melchora Caparros underlined the importance of of-

MOJACAR athlete Pedro Valdivia has won a bronze medal in the half marathon at the 21st European Athletics Master 50 Championship in Venice. Pedro, who has lived and trained in Mojacar since 2006, was part of the Spanish national team taking part in the International Athletics Federation-organised event. His win in Venice was by no means the first time he has stepped up onto the podium; his excellent record places him among the top athletes in his category. Pedro runs both marathons and half marathons, and he has travelled half the world taking part in top events. For each competition he puts in more than 1,000 km of training: if the entire distance he has

Divers fishing illegally caught out A GUARDIA CIVIL patrol caught out four divers fishing illegally in the Cabo de Gata N atural Park. Officers obser ved the four free diving and using spearguns in the Punta de la Polacra marine reserve. The Guardia said the four made continuous immersions and failed to comply with safety legislation by not indicating their presence with an orange buoy. Identifying the four as MBH, IRB, JMAP and JADS, aged 40, 31, 33 and 37 respectively, the Guardia also reported they all lacked the necessary C-4 fishing licence. By the time the Guardia patrol came upon them they had netted 22 kilos of fish, including 11 groupers, a sea bass,

a teleost fish and snapper. Twelve of the fish the divers speared are protected species. Catching the fish on the coast of the natural park is prohibited and therefore considered a crime. The Guardia officers d i d n o t a r r e s t t h e f o u r, but did inform them they were suspected of breaking flora and fauna protection laws and that they would be reporting them to the Junta de Andalucia Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Sustainable Development regional m i n i s t r y ’s provincial delegation. The Guardia stressed the Gabo de Gata is a highly protected area and that the authorities carry out continuous inspections to protect the park’s flora and fauna.

Given global economic uncertainty, you may ask if this is a bad time to invest… but it is not so simple. A MARATHON Morecambe to Mojacar bike ride has raised just over £7,000 for Cancer Research UK. Lancastrian Ian Hunter succeeded in the challenge he set himself of covering the 1,500 mile distance in three weeks earlier this year, and now he has surpassed his initial goal of raising £5,000 for the cancer charity. The Euro Weekly News was among those waiting to cheer Ian over the final finishing line when he made it to Mojacar. “I was really pleased with the way my body stood up to it, but it got mentally tough at times and it was fighting that,” the 65-year-old revealed later. What really kept him going over the three weeks Ian said was thinking about why he had embarked on such an epic bike ride in the first place. “I just had to switch onto the Cancer Research UK wristband the Lancashire fundraising man-

However, we have only been able to do this thanks to the dedication and commitment of volunteers and supporters like Ian, without
whom we would not be able to fund our life-saving work. “Ian trained so hard for this challenge, and it was great to see his progress on social media as the miles racked up. Seeing the video of him arriving on the final day and being surprised by his lovely wife was enough to bring a tear to my eye! We can’t thank Ian enough for putting himself through this for us.” Ian, who has owned a holiday apartment in Mojacar since 2005, decided to raise funds for Cancer Research UK after losing his mum Joyce to the disease last year. His late mum visited him on the Costa Almeria many times and was planning to make one last visit. Sadly that never happened. Incredibly Ian only took up cycling in 2017 after a health scare. He quickly caught the cycling bug. Then when cancer claimed Joyce’s life last year he came up with the idea of the fundraising ride to Mojacar.

Donating blood in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. In Spain, Blood Components and Services are provided by 17 Regional Blood Transfusion Services. Despite their autonomous operations management, every regional service is fully incorporated into a unique and common Public National Health System, supplying a cohesive blood transfusion care to all citizens, residents, and visitors in Spain based on 100 per cent voluntary and non-remunerated blood donation. For more general information, visit www.msps.es. Anyone who has lived continuously in the UK between 1980 and 1996 (a minimum of one year) will not be able to donate blood in Spain due to the risk of transmitting mad cow disease. Similarly, there are restrictions if you have received a blood transfer in the UK. However, each region may have different rules about donation. Call the donation helpline on 935 573 500. Alternatively, visit www.donorsang.gencat.cat to find out if you are eligible. If you are eligible, you can give blood at your local hospital, or via the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja) at one of their clinics, or in one of their mobile units. You can check dates and locations by visiting www.donarsangre.org. A donor card is not necessary to give blood. On the first visit you will have to provide DNI, NIE, passport or a driving licence. If you are already registered in the Blood Bank, you only need a donor card or a document with your name and surname. The process of blood donation takes just 10 minutes in which 450 ml are collected (equating to 10 per cent of the total blood circulation of an adult person). Despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain blood is through the generosity of the public. The blood is carefully screened for disease to make sure it is safe. After a tattoo, you must wait four months to be eligible to donate. After surgery, the exclusion period will depend on the type of intervention. After minor surgical procedures, you cannot donate blood for seven days or until you are fully recovered. After undergoing major surgery, you will not be able to donate blood for four months. The rarest blood type is AB, present in 1 per cent of Caucasians, according to research by the America Red Cross. Blood transfusions are carried out daily in Spanish hospitals with more than 6,200 patients being given them, of whom almost a quarter are fighting cancer and a similar figure receiving transfusions during or after surgery. Stolen vehicles spotted GUARDIA CIVIL recovered three vehicles which had been stolen in Germany at Almeria port. Officers identified two of the vehicles during routine checks on passengers and vehicles boarding ferries bound for North Africa and Melilla. Both vehicles had fake documentation. Jail term for importing guns A MAN who illegally imported handguns from Spain into Scotland has been jailed for three years and 10 months. Douglas Urquhart was arre s te d a fte r a ra id on his home in the villa ge of Loa nhe a d, M idlothia n in May this year. Four illegal firearms and ove r 40 bla de d w e a pons were recovered from the 45year-old’s property. The guns, front-venting blank firers which are illega l in the U K , w e re a ll

The room had an electromagnetic lock controlled by PIN entry keypad, and contained tinned food, bottled water, a safe and a CCTV system which allowed sight of outside. He was sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow on Tuesday, October 15 after pleading guilty last month to firearms offences.

October 31 looms, but this year it brings something scarier than Halloween and trick-or-treaters to our calendars. UK’s deadline to leave the EU has caused many complications and a growing sense of dread grips the nation. With mere days left and still no decision on Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal, it’s no wonder people are worried about the imminent exit from Europe. In a bid to gauge the opinion of Britons in Spain, EuroWeekly hit the streets of Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol. Notepad in hand, it wasn’t hard to come across holidaymakers and residents alike who shared one thing in common: uncertainty about the future.

Get the power New Luxury Malaga Port Hotel THE town hall’s Equality department announced a free course on Female Empowerment. This will be held on Thursdays and Saturdays between 10am and 12 noon in the H o g a r d e l P e n s i o n i s t a ’s m u l t i p u r p o s e room. Entitled Secretos de una mujer feliz (Secrets of a happy woman) the course continues until next May and is open to women of all ages and nationalities, promoting empowerment individually, collectively and socially. “The course will show them how to handle emotions, listen to them and recognise them,” explained Equality councillor Rocio Guijarro. “It also promotes self-esteem, motivation, and capacity for decision-making.” The empowerment course will provide spaces for reflection and self-awareness that can show women how to identify what they need and what they lack, while improving their self-esteem by appreciating their qualities and resources, Guijarro said. Takes Another Step Forward
MALAGA CITY: A new luxury hotel is proposed for the dock area. THE proposed new luxury hotel and conference centre planned for the Levante dock in Malaga has taken another step forward last week after a meeting was held at the Malaga Town Hall between the mayor and key financiers. Representatives of the Qatari Royal family, who are financing the project, met with Malaga mayor Francisco de la Torre to discuss plans for the upcoming venture. The Qatari royals were represented by former Real Madrid president Ramón Calderón who was acting as spokesperson of both the family and their affiliated holding company, Al Alfia. The proposed hotel is planned for a site at the end of the Levante dock in Malaga’s high end port area. It will include a 135-metre-tall 35-storey tower, luxury hotel rooms and a world class business centre. It is estimated to cost around €150 million, completely funded by the Qatari family. Although construction work was due to begin in 2020, this now seems unlikely as a mountain of bureaucratic paperwork needs to be completed before the work can start.

Phoenician site clean up THE deputy mayor of Torre del Mar, Jesus Perez Atencia, and councillor for the Environment, Antonio Ariza have announced a clear up programme to uncover the historically valuable Phoenician sites of Tuscany. The sites have been buried under mountains of undergrowth and domestic waste and despite weekly tours given by historical societies; it has remained untouched until now. Atencia, and Ariza announced the plan on Monday morning and have confirmed the council’s commitment to the historical value of the site. “We have, once and for all been able to act in these important sites, which were completely buried in undergrowth,” explained Atencia. “The council has mobilised a team of parks and gardens to adapt this site with an important remit of cleaning and clearing,” continued Ariza “We wanted to start by discovering reeds and weeds throughout the site to continue with a later intervention around the perimeter of the site.” The local council has placed extremely high value on the site historically and they understand the importance that the site offers to the economy and tourism industry in Velez-Malaga and Torre del Mar.

Hospital kitchens’ Michelin makeover HOSPITAL food doesn’t always get the best reports. But patients at the Hospital Universitario Los Arcos del Mar Menor would have had nothing to complain about when they had food prepared by a Michelin starred chef. Pablo Gonzalez celebrated Hospitality Day organised by food wholesalers Makro - by creating a tapa that was cooked and served at the hospital. In total, more than 540 tapas were offered to patients in five hospitals throughout Spain. The others were the Universitario General de Elche, Vinalopó (C Valenciana) and Universitario Severo Ochoa and Infanta Leonor (both in Madrid). All the tapas had one thing in common - they were created especially for the occasion by local Michelin starred chefs. Thanks for job well done HUERCAL-OVERA has thanked the municipality’s Local Police and Guardia Civil and Levante firefighters for their good work. Following a mass to mark the celebration of the day of the police’s patron saints, Mayor Francisca Lourdes Fernandez and Local Police chief Cristobal Artero presented several awards. Guardia Civil lieutenant Jose Manuel Bermudez was recognised for his coordination of the municipal security forces. The council recognised the Levante firefighting service for its protection of local residents and for its collaboration with the Local Police team. There was also an award for Jose Benitez for what the local authority stressed was the “bravery” he showed in helping police, Guardia Civil and firefighters rescue a person trapped by flooding in their vehicle on the A-350 during the torrential rains in the early hours of September 13. “Without thinking twice about the risk he was running, and driven only by saving the life of a person who was trapped, he made up part of the rescue team,” the council said. The mayor took the opportunity to highlight “the well-deserved homage and fair recognition” of the Local Police force “for being the true promoters of democratic values based on respect for the law and regulations on coexistence.”
EMAYA has launched a project to improve the quality and taste of tap water and promote its consumption in Mallorca. As part of Palma City Council’s project to promote the consumption of tap water, Emaya’s board of directors awarded Aquambiente and Suez Treatment Solutions the project for the ultrafiltration of water from the natural sources that supply Palma. The work will take around 20 months to complete and aims to improve the taste of water and to double the capacity of treating water from source, which will go from 500 to 1,000 litres per second, and generate more water from renewable and sustainable resources. The current system does not make it possible to take advantage of a significant part of the water that flows from the sources during the rainy season, due to a lack of capacity and because it cannot treat water that has a high degree of turbidity or cloudiness. The town hall hopes to increase consumption of tap water by the public and reduce the consumption of plastic bottles. The president of Emaya, Ramon Perpinyà, reminded everyone that Palma’s water is drinkable, has all the health guarantees for human consumption, and is controlled and analysed continuously. The project will include the construction of a 600 square metre building in Son Tugores with new pipes, pump systems and the renovation of the electrical installation and the control system.

WITH the latest outbreak of demon strations in Cataluña following the prison sentences handed down to those involved in the illegal Indepen dence referendum, local business owners are worried about the future. The Cataluñia Business Association has appealed to the government to restore security in the region as they contend that demonstrations of this type can lead to serious violence and hurt all types of business. Tourists are unlikely to visit what is one of Spain’s most popular destina tions if there is continued unrest. Their spokesman said 7,000 com panies have left Cataluña since 2012 (of which 5,400 left in 2017) and it is feared more businesses will relocate.

You then state: ‘Properly, your town hall should not have issued a building permit without first seeing this permis sion.’ Our Community has frequent problems with owners making structural alterations without seeking approval at the AGM. At a meeting with a lawyer for our local town hall, we were told that ensuring someone has AGM ap proval is not the responsibility of the town hall. The lawyer stated that as long as the building regulations were not breached the town hall has to issue the licence. Could you tell me what the legal reference is for your statement? Your town hall lawyer is quite right. The YOU AND THE town building de LAW IN SPAIN partment has no le gal obligation to re quire the community’s permission in order to issue the building permit. However, some of the more conscientious town halls will question its absence, which is what led me to use the term ‘properly.’ Wishful thinking on my part, and sorry to have misled you.

Secret CCTV THE European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has reversed on ap peal from Spain a judgement it made concerning a complaint from five cashiers at a Spanish supermar ket that they were illegally filmed. The court finally agreed with the Spanish courts that the decision to place hidden cameras in their place of work without telling was both ‘proportionate and legitimate’ as there had been clear evidence of discrepancies between stock counts and daily takings. Staff had been made aware there were video cameras as a method of trying to identify possible theft, but did not that they were suspected of being involved.

Airlines to reduce cabin fumes By John Smith SOME two months ago flight BA422 from Heathrow to Valencia suddenly filled with what was de scribed as choking smoke and a BBC report has highlighted the fact that some of the passengers con tinue to suffer with breathing diffi culties. As the matter is still being investi gated by Spanish air accident au thorities, BA have declined to com ment due to legal reasons, but this is just one of a whole string of simi lar incidents that go back for more than a decade.

FEW consumers will realise that with effect from the end of September new security and authentication requirements (PSD2 directive) were supposed to be in place throughout the European Union to cover online transactions. In actual fact, there has been a time-slip and the Bank of Spain has indicated that all banks, online businesses and payment service providers in Spain have until the end of this year to submit their proce-
dures which would require positive responses to two out of three questions to allow payment to go through. The concept is that there must be an answer to a question, details of a password and voice or fingerprint recognition and once all of that is in place, then the actual start date will not be until January 1, 2021! The idea behind this is to increase consumer safety and harmonise the rules across the EU.
In actual fact it is unlikely that the problem was caused by smoke, but was yet another fume event which some experts say is responsible for symptoms known as Aerotoxic Syn drome which may also affect pilots and cabin crew on a long term basis. Ironically when smoking was banned on aircraft, most airlines decided that rather than suck fresh air into the cabins through the en gine intakes, they would make oth er arrangements in order to reduce fuel costs. Instead, they decided to recycle air via the engines and it is claimed that the valves controlling this can often allow pollutants to escape, causing these fume events within an aircraft. It is in theory possible to add spe cial filters to the system, but some observers suggest that this is not being done because it could give public recognition to the concept of Aerotoxic Syndrome and thus leave airlines open to being sued for com pensation. As the number of fume event re ports grow, so will the need to in vestigate the true reason for their cause.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT AT the risk of upsetting my gay friends and relatives, whom I truly do love dearly, I am going to stride purposefully out on a limb and state quite categorically that I am utter ly against transgender males competing in female sporting competitions. This statement has nothing to do with ho mophobia (heaven forbid) it is reached by the simple conclusion that it’s obviously not fair. Merely because a muscle bound weightlifter decides he wants to change his name to Doris and live as a woman, his choice should in no way give him / her / it / us / them / we, the right to compete against the fair sex in trials of strength. If this practice were allowed to prevail in all sporting competitions, most of them would never see a genetic female grace the winner’s dais again. So, as much as I truly do sympathise with the situations that the transgender cyclist Rachel McKinnon finds herself in, the idea that she has being ‘vic timised’ and ‘it’s not fair’ that she be exclud ed from female competitions, is in fact quite the reverse. Despite what she would have us think, men and women on this planet are dif ferent, particularly in the physical sense. Does she truly believe that it would be

GAMES: Should there be a separate category for transgender sportsmen and women?
‘fair’ to pit male boxers and wrestlers, against females? Would she be prepared to take the responsibility of fatalities or serious injuries in the ring simply because she con siders all opposition to her opinions are ho mophobic, or simply ‘not fair’? No, this is the usual rhetoric from another minority, not at
all happy with their lot, who are utterly inse cure in their ‘differences’ and consider the only way they can be accepted is to brow beat the majority into recognising their situa tion as ‘the norm.’ Well, it’s not the ‘norm.’ What this person should really be doing is accepting and taking pride in the knowledge
that there are many human beings who are in fact different, and to celebrate this phe nomena by working toward and perhaps in troducing a separate category for transgen der sportsmen and women, in much the same way as the wonderful work and effort that has resulted in the worldwide success of those that find themselves physically im paired. I didn’t hear those marvelous people whingeing and whining about their infirmi ties. Their paraOlympics and competitions are magnificent and a sparkling example of what can be overcome by the human spirit. So I suggest that all those transgender sports people who figure themselves hard done by and put upon, to stop blaming the majority and come up with some positive way of improving their lot. What a great event something like that could actually be. ‘The Transgender Games.’ Book me in on the front row and stop being such pathetic de generating drags! Well where do you start? MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man WITHOUT looking at google, what is a ‘snowflake’ generation? Or ‘woke millennial’ or ‘woke generation’? How about a meme? Ever heard of that? All of a sudden I’m hearing and reading these phrases all the time and I don’t have a clue what they are talking about. I heard someone call a person on the TV a ‘fan toosh.’ I mean, have I missed something? I know what you’re thinking, ‘yeah but we have always had new words.’ I remember when the word fab was used for the first time and other ‘cool’ words, but they were all mostly used by the kids to confuse their parents. These new(ish) words are part of everyday language. I hear them on the news or read them on Twitter from older people. Then we have the whole gender thing. It used to be men and women now, well where do you start? Gender fluid, pansexu al, trans fluid, agender, demisexual there are now hundreds of different words to de
scribe what you are. Here’s a blinder for you ‘cisgender’ is a phrase I heard a woman on the telly describe herself as. So I looked it up and guess what it means? Ready? de noting or relating to a person whose sense of personal identity and gender corre sponds with their birth sex. In other words she’s a woman identifying as a woman. Why doesn’t she just say I’m a woman? I am not transphobic, I’m just confused. I also get angry because I think as soon as some one has any kind of opinion other than the trans world’s they are accused of all sorts of things. I don’t agree that awards cere monies should now only have awards for ‘them,’ not best male or female artist. Why is my opinion less valid than a singer who doesn’t identify as a bloke any more? Why does everything have to be changed for him or them or however they wish to be called? Plus I don’t agree that children as young as six should be taught in school that there are over a 100 different genders. The Royal College of General Practition ers recognises six genders. That’s four more than I was taught about at school! Yes there has to be sex education for kids at school but at what age I’m not sure and telling them there are over 100 genders is just bonkers. Sorry if that offends anyone, but I’m allowed my opinion!

BOASTING one of the most strategic ports in the Mediterranean, the city of Cartagena was once the threshold for every empire that in vaded Spain and has inherited an impressive collection of cultural landmarks as a result. Located in the region of Murcia, this impor tant naval city was founded in around 220 B.C. by the Carthaginians but didn’t become the thriving metropolis it is known as today until it was conquered by the Romans. It is still possi ble to see mosaics and murals that date back to this era in several of the city’s protected buildings. The city is home to an impressive array of
ruins, such as the Roman amphitheatre, which is the second biggest on the Iberian Peninsula, and the Byzantine wall that was built to pro tect the city from invasions. An easy way to get a grasp of just how many lives this city has lived is to take a trip up to Conception Castle which offers impres sive views of the whole bay. Here you can see the Spanish warships anchored where Phoeni cian traders used to dock their boats, and the effortless blend of modernist buildings and ancient fortresses proves just how well the city has held onto its history as time has passed.

THIS may be something that gets you angry. Speaking to many Brits who drive through France and parts of Spain, there seems to be a dramatic i n c r e a s e o f d r i v e r s r e c e i v i n g m e s sages from home saying that they have a speeding notification from ei ther the French or Spanish police. I READ a while ago that Torrevieja Town Hall announced that there was now a relief road to reduce conges tion on the CV95 and, true enough, there is... except that there is nothing to advise the motorists of same. The signs at the roundabout on the CV95 still say only ‘Urbanizacion’ whilst at the Via Park 3 end, there is nothing to indicate where the road goes to. The sign for Orihuela is still indi cating the road by the Via Park 3 centre. To make matters worse, if any one does find and take the road from the Aldi end they will soon see a ‘No Through Road’ sign con fronting them! No chance of the congestion be ing relieved whilst these signs re main as they are. Barry Weston
Politically correct LEAPY LEE Just read your article in Euro Weekly and it reminded me of a true story that happened in west Wales about 20 years ago. A local shopkeeper used to put up a joke of the day in his shop window.
The one day he displayed Q/ ‘What do you call three days of rain and then a day of sunshine?’ A/ ‘A bank holiday in Wales.’ Most people thought it was just a crap joke.

A guy made a formal complaint about the shopkeeper stating it was racist as it was antiWelsh. Everybody thought the complainant should get a life until the guy was interviewed and it transpired that the shopkeeper was Indian and that if the complainant had made a similar type of joke about the shopkeeper’s home town he would have been had up for racism. All he was saying is that it should be a twoway street. I have also argued that being born in 1960 exposed you to a totally different education and upbringing just look at the TV shows and remember the name of Richard Todd’s (Guy Gibson) dog in the film Dambusters. Robertson’s jam with Gollywogs etc. We are now re ferred to as racist. I am not at all racist but I still find black jokes amusing. CLOCKS will be going back all over the EU in the early hours of Saturday October 26. This will mean a whole 60 minutes more in bed. Three in the morning will go back to two, giving people the perfect start to a restful Sunday. This practice is known as DST - daylight saving time and will essentially transfer an hour of evening daylight to the morning. The contrary happens between spring and autumn, when there is an extra hour of daylight in the evening. DST has been the subject of much debate this year and in March the European Parliament announced its support to abolish the system in 2021. However, the majority of countries haven’t been able to come to a decision internally. Many investigations have tried predicting the preferable schedule. The Spanish Society of Sleep backs the winter timetable, explaining that it allows a better relation between sunlight and the population’s activity. They argue that light in the morning is more beneficial. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents in the UK disagrees and complains that the clock moving back means that traffic rush hours in the afternoon are in darkness. More accidents happen in the afternoon peak than in the morning peak and the time change may increase the numbers. With 80 per cent of Europeans against DST, it is probable that the practice will be revisited in future discussions in an attempt to decipher the best routine for people’s lifestyle and well-being.

Baby Bugatti enters Production NICK HORNE’S Rich Pick Freelance correspondent, London, England THE Geneva Motor Show has seen the launch of many new cars to the world. Bugatti celebrating its 110th birthday this year decided to mark the anniversary with several special editions including the Baby Bugatti II. Announced as a limited edition of just 500 cars the Baby Bugatti II’s sold out in just weeks. At the Geneva Motor Show the Baby was a 3D printed model. After many months of further de velopment this year the first working prototype the Baby Bugatti II XP1 was presented to a spe cial gathering of Bugatti customers held at the marque’s home at Molsheim in September. The original Baby Bugatti was a gift by Ettore Bugatti to his son Roland for his fourth birthday in 1926. The toy car was a half scale of the Type 35 built for the 1924 French Grand Prix at Lyon. The response from customers to this charming present was so strong that some 500 Baby Bugattis were manufactured between 1927 and 1936. The Baby Bugatti II unlike the original is de signed to be driven not only by children but also by adults, with the scale pushed up to three
quarters rather than half scale. The inclusion of a sliding pedal box accommodating adults when they manage to wrest the car away from the child. Also redesigned for the modern era is the drive train, now electric and powered with lithi um ion batteries and regenerative braking the BB II comes in three specifications. With a com posite body, with a carbon fibre body and a ‘speed key,’ and the BBII Pur Sang with a hand crafted aluminium body and ‘speed key.’ Speeds of up to 45 km/h indicate the driving experience that young and old will enjoy. A re mote control key to disable the car at up to 50 metres range, just in case a driver gets carried away. In short the BBII is expected to be fully en joyed by collectors as well as their grandchildren.
The innovative in its day eightspoke alloy wheels are replicated though now clad with modern Michelin tyres. The lightweight hol low front axle has been re produced as has the sus pension and the signature steering mechanism from the original. The cockpit is dominated by the fourspoke wood steering wheel in front of the turned alu minium dashboard on which are mounted cus tom Bugatti instruments. The original cars had a tachograph with oil and fuel pressure gages, these have been re placed with a speedometer, battery level indica

The clock used for measuring race performance in the Type 35 remains. The fuel pressure pump has been re purposed as a forward / reverse control. The exterior of the Bugatti Baby II is faithful to the original Bugatti Type 35 and will be painted as standard in French Racing Blue with a black leather interior. Naturally other colour options are available for both the exterior and interior. Actual manufacture and production is due to start in early 2020 and the option to join a Re serve List is still possible, just in case a prospec tive buyer should change their mind. Landmark breast cancer survey THOUSANDS of women are experiencing ‘avoidable’ delays
in being diagnosed w i t h t h e re t u r n a n d spread of breast can-

In the largest ever UK sur vey of people living with in curable secondary breast cancer, nearly one in four (24 per cent) respondents who had previously been treated for breast cancer had to visit their GP three or more times with symptoms before being diagnosed with the return and spread of the disease. In addition, four in 10 (41 per cent) respondents who had spoken to a healthcare professional before being di agnosed with secondary breast cancer said they felt that their symptoms had not been taken seriously. If left untreated, sec ondary breast cancer contin ues to spread and symptoms are likely to worsen and have a greater impact on daily life.
While there is insufficient ev idence to show whether de lays in diagnosis may signifi cantly shorten patients’ lives, early diagnosis and timely access to treatment and sup port can help alleviate symp toms and have a dramatic impact on quality of life. Breast Cancer Now is call ing for better support for GPs such as online training and for alerts of the redflag symptoms of secondary breast cancer to be included and used in all GPs’ IT soft ware as well as for all pri mary breast cancer patients to be given full information on the signs of secondary breast cancer as part of fol lowup support after treat ment to help ensure every one receives a prompt diagnosis. The findings come as the charity launches ‘The Unsur vivors,’ a bold new campaign
calling for greater recogni tion of the estimated 35,000 UK people living with incur able secondary breast cancer and for a stepchange in their diagnosis, treatment and care. The charity said the cam paign aimed to challenge the “worrying perception that everyone survives breast cancer” which fails to recog nise “the heartbreaking reali ty for 11,500 families in the UK each year.” Breast cancer is the UK’s most common cancer, with around 55,000 women and 370 men being diagnosed each year. While more women than ever are surviv ing the disease thanks to decades of progress, NHS in vestment, and increased charity support funded by the public, around 11,500 still die in the UK each year. Almost all of these deaths
are attributable to sec ondary breast cancer, where breast cancer spreads to an other part of the body, such as the bones, liver, lungs, skin or brain. While sec ondary (also known as ‘metastatic’) breast cancer can be treated and con trolled for some time to help patients live well for as long as possible, it remains incur able and patients stay in treatment for the rest of their lives. In around five per cent of the 55,000 new cases of breast cancer each year, the disease has already spread by the time it is diag nosed5 ― and for thousands more it can return around the body years later. Early diagnosis can be criti cal in ensuring patients can begin treatment, and receive the care and support they need, as soon as possible.

Smashed Baked Potatoes I T isn’t often we have much left after a meal here at Olive Tree Farm, but if we do, I like to try and ei ther make something of the leftovers, or if push comes to shove, the ani mals might get some scraps! Potatoes are often left overs as I always cook far too many. Mashed potatoes become potato cakes, roasties get chopped up a bit and used in a tortilla or as a bit of a side dish. And then there are those annoy ing small potatoes that you get in a bag that if you de cided to peel them would be the size of an egg by the time you had finished and taken up far too much time! This week, after eyeing up these annoyingly small potatoes, I decided to try something different! Noth ing special admittedly, boil ing them is easy, and yes, I boiled them but then I smashed them up, just a lit

tle bit and baked them. They were blooming gor geous, here is what I did! • Ingredients 12 small potatoes (or however many you have), don’t peel them, you need the skins on! Olive oil Butter Parmesan (or pasta) cheese
Salt and pepper • Method Bring water to a boil in a saucepan and add potatoes and a pinch of salt. Boil gently for about 20 minutes until a knife runs through and they are tender. Drain potatoes and put them on a baking sheet lined with baking paper. Take a potato masher or
a fork and press down on the potato, just one press until the top of the skin splits. Brush or spray with olive oil and add a knob of butter to the top of each potato and a twist of salt and black pepper. Bake in the oven on about 200ºC for around 20 30 mins.

Remove from the oven and add a sprinkle of parmesan cheese to each potato and another twist of black pepper, put them back in the oven for around five or so more minutes. Once finished, you have a fabulous creamy potato in terior with a lovely crispy outside. You can serve with a salad along with tiny pieces of chopped crispy bacon and peppers, or, do what I did and forget about making potato cakes, and serve them straight out of the oven alongside bacon and egg! Delicious!
Olive Tree Farm was set up about four years ago with the intention of achieving a level of self sufficiency. We have poultry for meat and eggs, goats for milk, rabbits and small pigs for meat and harvest our 70 olive trees each year for oil. We also grow a variety of fruits and vegetables.

Talking through the solutions THE provincial government and Chirivel Council have been talking through possible solutions for updating the municipality’s water and sewage systems. Former mayor sentenced for illegal licences THE Supreme Court has sentenced the former Zurgena mayor to five years and four months in prison for granting illegal urban planning licences. Candido Trabalon Fernandez was charged with a perversion of justice on urban planning, with falsifying official documentation, with crimes against land planning and with bribery, Spanish press reported. The Supreme Court sentence followed an appeal against the Almeria Provincial Court ruling, which sentenced Trabalon to six years and six months behind bars in all, along with an 18year special disqualification from holding public office, in relation to the ‘Costurero’ lawsuit for urban planning corruption. The new ruling also sentences 15 other individuals, according to Spanish press, among them the former Town Planning councillor Manuel Tijeras Cruz: he gets one year, seven months in prison for a perversion of justice on urban
planning, compared with the two year, six month sentence set by the Almeria Provincial court. Both Trabalon and Tijeras were absolved of the crime of negotiations prohibited to civil servants, for which they would have been fined €12 a day for 20 months. A further three former Zurgena councillors, a former town hall secretary and a former municipal technician have sentences of one year and three months for perversion of justice on urban planning.
The other nine defendants, all former technicians or business people, have sentences going from fines up to 15 months in jail for bribery, acts against land planning or perversion of justice. The Almeria court considered it proven that between 2003 and 2007, Trabalon and Tijeras granted irregular licences for the construction of more than 1,500 homes, which would have tripled Zurgena’s population and put at risk ‘the rational use of natural resources and the protection of the environment,’

Recycling for good cause RECYCLING and contributing to a good cause are going hand-in-hand in Albox. The Almanzora-Levante-Velez regional refuse collection service, Ecovidrio and Albox Council have presented the ‘Recicla Vidrio por ellas’ (Recycling glass for them) campaign in the municipality. Now in its fourth consecutive year, the initiative running in 80 towns and cities across Spain aims to encourage residents to use designated bins for depositing glass for recycling, which
Ecovidrio then turns into donations for the Fundacion Sandra Ibarra de Solidaridad. The non-profit foundation founded in 2008 backs scientific investigation into cancer and seeks to improve cancer patients’ quality of life. Well-known fashion designer Agatha Ruiz de la Prada did the design for the special pink campaign ‘mini-igloos.’ Albox’s two are located in Calle Muro next to the town hall. Last year Albox residents recycled 128 tonnes of glass in the municipality’s 41 bins, representing an average of 11 kilos per person.
Medieval Macael deeper dig THE regional government has given the green light to further investigations into the ‘Macael Viejo’ archaeological site. The Junta de Andalucia’s Culture and Historic Heritage regional ministry has authorised a six-year project led by archaeologist Abraham Santiago Moreno, and with the University of Granada’s Medieval History and Historiographical Science and Technology department’s scientific consultation. The aim of the project is to gain a greater insight into the medieval settlement located on a hill close to Macael, and believed to be the possible origin of the municipality. The same team of experts have worked on the site on two previous occasions: once in 2017 and again last year. The local council expects the new project will result in the opening up of the site to the public, Spanish press reported.

The works are part of a €3.1 million Junta de Andalucia Tourism, Regeneration, Justice and Local Administration regional ministry assistance package for 46 Almeria municipalities. The Andalucia government has allocated €110,586 to Tijola. As well as cleaning up and replacing sections of the sewage and draining systems, repairs are being carried out to retaining walls in Calle de Contencio between Calle Muro y Virgen del Socorro, while on
Avenida de Almanzora the wall and paving are being restored. The regional ministry’s Almeria delegate Jose Luis Delgado was in Tijola last week to meet with the mayor Jose Juan Martinez before visiting some of the areas affected by the torrential rain and flooding where the works are being carried out. Delgado said he was pleased the first results of the subsidies were already evident. “In just one month we have managed to not only assign an amount to each locality but also to get this help to the municipalities and they can start the works to address the effects of the rain and prevent problems in the fu-
ture,” he commented. Describing the works as “extensive and labourious,” and poi nt i ng out that in some places it has t o be done by hand, t he Junta delegate also underlined the importance of “collaboration between t he adm i ni st r at i ons” t o best addr ess r esi dent s’ needs. Businessman kidnappers sentenced THE Almeria Provincial Court has sentenced two men to 18 months behind bars for kidnapping a Macael businessman. The pair were charged with abducting and holding a Macael businessman against his will for several days in 2010 to force his son to return a supposed shipment of hashish, Spanish press reported. Accompanied by six or seven others, the two allegedly grabbed the then 66-year old victim in an industrial estate and forced him into a car boot. They reportedly held him for two days in a warehouse before transferring him to a house in Malaga and releasing him nearly six days after his abduction. The public prosecutor said accomplices of the accused put demands on the man’s family to get the son to appear and demanded payment for the father’s release, although there was no record any ransom was paid, Spanish press said. The accused were ordered to pay €30,000 compensation.

The semifinals were good to watch. Barbara had a good win over Eileen Phoenix, who played quality bowls, but it wasn’t her day. Chris had a very good battle with Carole Hol lett. Carole was in the lead on the 22nd end 20 17: an exciting watch for the 30plus who were in attendance. Chris then levelled the score 2020 on the next end taking three shots. He contin
ued the determination taking the championship with one shot on the fi nal end. A great semifi nal. At the end captain Chris Brown thanked all players who had taken part, Tony Lear for run ning the competition and the markers without whom the club could not run the competition: there was a special men tion for Ken Richardson, who marked the final and also marked in every round. There was thanks too for Bryan Hughes for the excellent job on the car pet and surroundings, and to the supporters who watched the compe tition. Finally the winning tro phy was presented to Chris Ewer, with compli ments to Barbara Rear don for her achievement in getting to the final.
