WAVE OF MIGRANTS A LOCAL mayor has called for an emergency protocol to be activated as a wave of migrants hit Costa Blanca shores. Mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belen Castejon, has issued the request for the central government to help keep the cost of dealing with the situation low. It wo u l d l e t t o wn h alls use sports pavilions to hold some of the migrants until they can be properly accommodated at the local detention centre. Five migrant boats or ‘pateras’ reached the coasts of the province with at least 47 people on board in total, according to sources from the Red Cross and the lifeguard services of Orihuela. A boat with 24 people also arrived over the weekend, this time at Alicante port, while two others landed in Torrevieja with 15 occupants in total, all males and Algerians except for one Syrian.
MIGRANTS: Taking advantage of the recent good weather. On Sunday two boats arrived on Orihuela Costa, between Punta Prima and Cala Mosca. Eight migrants were found, with more suspected to have landed. Migrants are thought to be taking advantage of the g o o d w e a th er a n d re c e nt full moon to make the dangerous trip before autumn and winter storms set in.
