COOK’S COSTLY CRASH Costa Blanca is feeling the financial aftermath of the bankruptcy of British travel giant Thomas Cook. IT has been estimated that a debt of €1.5 million has been left by the British company, affecting hotels and businesses in the region. It has also been revealed that more than 13,000 package holidays have been booked from May until the end of the year in the Costa Blanca, substantially less than the estimated 300,000 that have been booked in the Balearic and Canary Islands. As for tourists currently staying in the Costa Blanc a , A n t o n i o M a y o r, t h e President of Hospec, has said that there are insurances in place that will take tourists back to their home country at no extra cost. Drowned turkeys NINE THOUSAND turkeys that were due to be sold at Christmas drowned last week on a farm in Almoradi, near Alicante due to the flooding caused by the recent storms in the area. It is reported that the water level rose up to a metre in the farm and even though the owners attempted to block and divert the water with rocks and sandbags they were unsuccessful. The owner has commented in the press that they had never experienced such a situation before and adde d t h a t t h e r e g io n a l road, the CV-91, which runs through the area caused the flooding due to blockages. The dead animals have already been removed from this farm, which has b e e n o p e r a t i n g fo r 35 years and is gradually trying to return to normal.

Car-free city wanted CICLOVIA Alicante was a huge success on Sunday when thousands of people descended on the city by bicycle, scooter, walking or on roller skates to enjoy the streets that had been closed to traffic from Plaza del Mar to the Avenida de Villajoyosa. The councillor for Mobility, Jose Ramon Gonzalez, attended the Ciclovia and was very pleased by the participation and response to the event emphasising that ‘it is necessary to achieve greater involvement of everyone to achieve a more sustainable and habitable city, in which we reduce the use of private vehicles and use other modes of travel such as cycling, walking or using public transport.’ There were lots of activities provided by the Alicante City Council such as a children’s playground, a ‘crazy bikes’ circuit, bouncy castle, painting and craft stands and food trucks. There were also training activities and workshops such as ‘Learn to ride a bike,’ a stand where people

could go for advice and help to repair a bike, and a stand for ‘Bicycle registration.’ In the road education workshop that took place, the police taught children how to drive safely using ve-
hicles adapted to each of the ages: pedal bicycles, tricycles, fourwheeled cars, and bicycles with stabilising wheels. The City Council also raffled off
three bikes and handed out gifts to hundreds of attendees who had registered to participate throughout the morning, and cycle the bicycle tour on the coast of the city.
Prestigious award THE City of Science and Innovation Award for 2018 has been awarded to Benidorm Council. The mayor of Benidorm, Toni Perez, expressed his pride in belonging to the Innpulso Network and that the award is recognition of the work that has been carried out in the area to make it the first certified Intelligent Tourist Destination in the world. At the Castellon Congress Centre, Mayor Toni Pérez received the award from the Acting Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities, Pedro Duque, in the presence of the President of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig.

Painting shortfall ‘ROCAS DE JÁVEA and Cabo de San Martín’ was sold last week for €140,000 - well below the estimate by the Setdart auction house, which set the value of the work between €200,000 and €250,000. It is an oil on canvas measuring 35 x 50 cm and was painted in 1905 by Joaquin Sorolla during one of his long stays in Javea. The painting belonged to Concha Sorolla, the painter’s sister, and her husband, Enrique Matarredona.

Dog poison VETS in the town of Sax saved the life of a puppy on Thursday that had been poisoned. The puppy had been for a walk and on their return felt unwell and at the clinic she vomited a sausage with blades and some kind of poison inside.
Raft caught ELEVEN men of Algerian origin were intercepted on Monday by the Guardia Civil on board a raft in Moraig cove in Benitachell. The raft was sighted at 8.20am and the operation involved both the Guardia Civil and the Local Ppolice, according to sources.

STUNNING LANDSCAPES A BEAUTIFUL yet solemn photographic display was recently exhibited at Madrid’s Goethe Institute. THE Photographs, A Collection Entitled ‘Memoria Perdida’ by accomplished artist and photographer Miquel Gonzalez were displayed as part of the 2019 Photoespana Festival. His photographs depict eerily still and subdued landscapes, normally a scene of beauty, these images show the sites of mass, unmarked graves filled during the tragic Spanish Civil War in 1939. Spain has one of the highest num-
bers of mass graves in the world after more than 130,000 people ‘disappeared’ during the War and during Francisco Franco’s subsequent dictatorship. Their remains are distributed across more than 2,500 unexcavated, unmarked mass grave sites, mainly surrounding the Madrid Province. It was only in the 1970s that Spain managed to discover its freedom after the tyrannical reign of Franco, which was around the time that photograph-
er Gonzalez was discovering his love for learning about the rich history that came at such a turbulent time. The Spanish Civil War has not long since ended, and the last of its remaining witnesses have all but passed, with experts warning that the country is in danger of falling into a perpetual silence regarding the tragic events. However the government is pledging a total of €150,000 to fund efforts to remember the country’s brutal history for generations to come.

Flood aid pledge
A ‘BOTELLON,’ a gathering of young people drinking in the street, of epic proportions was raided and broken up by police in Alicante on Sunday. The huge gathering was organised through social media and soon gained hundreds of followers. It was due to be held in the early hours of Sunday morning in Calle Artes Graficas near a popular nightclub, but several complaints were made by local residents before police showed up and dispersed the crowds. A total of 150 fines were handed out to people at the event and 200 litres of alcohol was confiscated. The fines were €90 each. The mayor of Security, Jose Ramon Gonzalez, congratulated the police for preventing hundreds of young people from drinking alcohol and increasing police presence to eradicate these alcohol-fuelled gatherings in the streets.
PEOPLE affected by the storm that hit the region between September 11 and 14 can apply to Communidad Valencia for financial help to purchase basic household goods until October 14. After submitting the application, each household who qualifies will receive an advance of €1,500. This amount can be increased to €4,500 depending on the damage caused by the floods, explained the administration in a statement. In total, the council has allocated a substantial sum of €13.5 million for these payments to help residents get back on their feet after the floods. A team of administrative staff will be sent to the affected municipalities ‘to inform and help the victims in the procedures necessary to access the subsidies,’ according to officials. The aim is that payments are processed as quickly as possible to get these towns back to normal.

Archeological investigation Benidorm Council has provisionally suspended the construction of a new building that was eventually going to be used as a hotel.

IT is believed that the new hotel is located in the Carrer d’Alacant in the old town of the city and that it has been suspended whilst it awaits authorisation from the council following a report by the Department of Historical Heritage. In the report, the Department of Historical Heritage has requested that the develop-
er request permission from the Regional Ministry of Culture ‘so that an archaeologist can carry out the corresponding examinations and, on the basis of his report, determine the measures to be taken.’ As a result, the City Council will grant the licence for its construction once they receive the goahead.
This measure is taken in cases in which the area where the construction is taking place is considered a protected area and one in which the experts assume that archaeological remains of relevant interest could be found. The construction may only be suspended for a maximum of three months.
Light up Valencia VALENCIA City Council has put together a plan to change the bulbs in 11,438 streetlights to LED bulbs, it has been announced. The councillor for Resource Management, Luisa Notario, explained in a statement that this intervention “is very important because it will allow us to reach 50 per cent of public lighting in our city.” Half of the lights in the city are set to be improved and will be more energy efficient and better for the environment. The IDAE II project has been granted € 3,999,999.87 for the project which has been financed entirely with money from the European Regional
Development Fund (ERDF). “The conditions are very favourable for the City Council of Valencia because the financing is at 0 per cent interest, to be repaid in 10 years and with the first year of grace, without having to repay capital, so that from the second year the City Council can repay the loan from the savings already generated by the investment,” explained the mayor. The objective of the Department of Resource Management is to change the 25 Mw bulbs that are currently installed to 7-8 Mw bulbs so that the recurring costs of the energy bill are reduced significantly.

Attempt to buy off rape victim A KUWAITI businessman’s family tried to buy off the woman he allegedly raped. A 28-year-old Moroccan, identified as Mariam to protect her anonymity, was the Calpe-based family’s nanny. The Kuwaiti’s relatives were so insistent that they were still coercing her while she was at the Denia court, repeatedly sending her text messages and offering money if she dropped the charges. The investigating judge assigned to the case is now taking these messages into account in his appraisal of the evidence. Mariam claimed she was raped and obliged to perform sex acts on the man during the month that she was kept a virtual prisoner in his house. Her employer had promised to regularise her position in Spain but failed to do so or pay her, she said. The abuse began several days after she began working for the family and was so violent that she was physically injured although her employer prevented her from seeing a doctor, allegedly threatening to kill her if she sought help. During the third and last attack, the man’s children tried unsuccessfully to prevent him from raping the nanny, but the victim explained that he made them leave the room and carried on abusing her. When her employer went to pacify the shaken children, Mariam managed to escape from the house and seek help, leading to the arrest of the Kuwaiti who was remanded in custody.

Human trafficker held A WOMAN has been arrested in Alicante in connection with human trafficking and sexual exploitation offences after a European Arrest Warrant was issued. The 40-year-old woman was arrested in relation to a discrepancy with the social security and false papers and when the police put her details into the system they discovered there was a warrant out
for her arrest in France. The woman is accused of forcing young people into prostitution to pay off the debts that they had to pay off to reach France illegally. The woman had escaped from France and the French authorities had been looking for her since January 2019. She was allegedly the manager of a flat where girls were kept and forced into prostitution and was responsible for transporting the girls. The woman is expected to be sentenced to more than 10 years in prison in France where she will be extradited to.

DONATIONS: Successful blood drive was staged in Denia.

A TOTAL of 173 people were able to donate blood at a blood drive organised by the Denia Town Hall and the Community Transfusion Centre on Thursday. According to municipal sources, a total
of 201 people attended the blood drive which was set up at the social centre in Denia. Only 173 people were able to give blood and most of the people were habitual blood donors, although 30 people were donating blood for the first time.
Tighter regulations in Alicante city ALICANTE City Council is looking to improve the image of the city and the way the tourists perceive it. The City Council met to
discuss a new municipal ordinance that will regulate begging or street vending. While drafting these new regulations, the council is
collecting suggestions and proposals for local residents. One suggestion is that it should be prohibited to walk in the streets without a t-shirt, something that has been introduced in several cities around Europe with Venice imposing a fine of up to â‚Ź700 for those in breach of the regulation. As reported by the City Council, the new regulations will allow police to keep an eye on street vendors and beggars that harass residents and tourists in the city centre. Also discussed at the meeting was the pedestrianisation of the old town and a meeting with the Traffic and Urban Planning Department that will invite business owners to give their opinions and to analyse the impact and opportunities that the closure of vehicles to the city centre will cause.

Hostage situation
A 51-YEAR-OLD man allegedly kept his partner hostage for 15 hours and threatened her with a knife in Valencia. In the early hours of Friday morning the man in question locked his partner in a room in an apartment by barricading the door with pieces of furniture. He also took her mobile phone and unplugged the router so that she could not make contact with anybody. During her time in the room, the victim attempted to speak to her partner and persuade him to open the door, but was unable to reason with him. Several times he said aloud that he would take his own life. The next morning, after she had been held captive for 15 hours, the woman managed to escape, unharmed, whilst her partner wasn’t looking and took refuge in a neighbour’s house where she called the police. When police arrived they found the man with a knife in his hand and he was threatening to stab himself if they came closer. As officers tried to arrest him he stabbed himself several times in the neck and abdomen leaving officers with no choice but to shoot him with a taser to immobilise him. Once arrested, his wounds were tended to on the scene before he was taken to hospital for further treatment. The man is currently being held for illegal detention and ill-treatment in the family environment.

MR GRUMPY’S NOT SO GRUMPY LAST weekend a select few witnessed that the Euro Weekly News’ very own Mr Grumpy actually has a softer side. Friends and family gathered to celebrate the 70th birthday of Michael Senker and the guest list included legendary snooker player Ronnie O’Sullivan, whom Michael and wife Patti have been close friends with for over 20 years. Also there was awardwinning actress Pauline Quirke and her producer husband Steve Sheen. Their son Charlie, Michael’s godson, who is best known for appearing alongside Pauline in Birds of a Feather, was also there. The official celebrations kicked off on Saturday night with a dinner for the 30 guests that had flown in from the UK at El Rio restaurant in Los Boliches. On Sunday Michael and Patti hosted a poolside BBQ in the private courtyard of the stunning ‘The Residence’ at the Beach House, Elviria for 50 guests. Masquerade, also very close friends, provided the enter tainment on Sunday and were, as always, superb. Leonardo La Peruta, on saxophone made a guest appearance which delighted everyone present. Youngest daughter Sarah gave a wonder
ful speech touching on Michael’s colourful life, explaining how he had spent time in London and had worked as a bodyguard for some famous and influential people before starting the chain Vid Biz which be came the third largest independent video chain in the UK. After selling Vid Biz the family moved to Spain for Michael to enjoy his retire ment. That didn’t go to plan when Michael opened a poker club and then a jewellery business before slowing down to appear annually as Father Christmas for a variety of charities and writing his Mr Grumpy columns. An atmosphere of love, affection and respect pervaded the whole weekend and was evidenced by not only the num ber of friends present that Michael has known for decades some for over 60 years but also the close friendships that have been forged during the 15 years Michael and Patti have lived in Spain. Two of his original employees made the jour ney from the UK which speaks volumes about the man. If you ever cross paths with the legend that is Michael Senker per haps ask him to tell you some of the stories that couldn’t be recounted at the party!!

THE Guardia Civil in Calpe stopped a septuagenarian who was caught committing a robbery inside a vehicle parked in the vicinity of the yacht club. The Moroccan national
has allegedly got a long history of crime and it is believed he is responsible for four crimes of robbery with force, using fake documentation, stealing a car and fraud.

LADY MOURA: One of the most expensive superyachts in the world has sailed into the port of Denia.
Superyacht sails into Denia ‘LADY MOURA,’ one of the most expensive superyachts in the world, is currently moored in the port of Denia having arrived early in the afternoon on Saturday. The yacht, valued at over €200 million, is owned by Nasser Al Rasheed, a Saudi doctor and magnate, who owns the international engineering consultancy Rasheed Engineering. The boat, which can usually be spotted in
Ibiza, arrived in the port at around 4.15pm with many people gathering on the dock to watch her sail in. The impressive vessel was designed by the Italian architect Luigi Sturchio and was built in the German shipyard of Blojm+Voss. It is 105 metres long and 20 metres wide. The luxury yacht is so fancy that even the letters of the name and the coat of arms are made in 24carat gold.

Corbyn remains on fence LABOUR activists failed to push leader Jeremy Corbyn off the fence and agree a clear Brexit policy for the party. Grassroots members at the party’s annual conference called on Monday for Labour to adopt an unequivocal Remain stance.

Court ruling due JUDGES have condemned Boris Johnson’s suspension of Parliament during Brexit talks as unlawful. The Supreme Court announced its historic finding on Tuesday after a three-day hearing. The legal challenge to the suspension was brought jointly by former Prime Minister John Major and campaigner Gina Miller. Calls have been made for Parliament to be recalled immediately and for Boris Johnson to resign. The government’s lawyers argued that suspending Parliament was a political matter and not one for the judiciary. Supreme Court president, Lady Hale, said the effect of the suspension on democracy had been “extreme”. She added that it had frustrated and prevented Parliament carrying out its constitutional functions and was “without reasonable justification”.

Battle of Britain remembered AIRFORCE veterans welcomed the most senior female officer in the histor y of the British Armed forces to commemorate the Battle of Britain. The Aircrew Association Costa Blanca (ACACB) held its annual Celebration of the Battle of Britain in the presence of Air Marshall Susan Gray CB OBE FREng. A JURY has found Ana Julia Quesada guilty of the premeditated murder of eight-year old Gabriel Cruz in Cabo de Gata in Almeria last year. After more than 24 hours of deliberations the nine jury members unanimously considered it proven that Gabriel’s father ’s ex-girl-

Gabriel, known to his friends and family as Little Fish, went missing from close to his Grandmother’s house near Nijar on February 27, 2018. His disappearance sparked a huge search involving thousands of people, among them Quezada. Two weeks later police charged her with killing Gabriel when they found his lifeless body in the boot of her car. She maintained she had not intended to kill the youngster and acted in selfdefence after he attacked her.
Held for 2009 killing A MAN, aged 44, has been arrested for an alleged murder of a woman who disappeared in 2009. The arrested man is at present serving a sentence for a 2010 murder. An investigation started in July 2016, when two young men came across two holdalls in Barranco de Santos at Puente Javier de Loño in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Inside the bags were human bones. At that time the Homicide Group of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife National Police was investigating the disappearance of a woman, which had been reported several years previously by the woman’s daughter. As a result, the investigation focused on identifying the remains found, and seeing if they could be matched to the missing woman. This process culminated in the recent arrest.

A WOMAN has been remanded in custody in connection with the death of a baby whose body was found in a rubbish bin. The National Police of Gijon arrested a couple living in Nuevo Roces in connection with the incident at the end of August. Her partner of seven years has been released with charges. The arrests took place over the weekend. Police have indicated that the woman is the baby’s mother and had hidden her pregnancy. The baby’s body had numerous cuts caused by a knife, according to an autopsy performed at the Institute of Legal Medicine. The newborn was allegedly killed at birth and then thrown into a container in a backpack. A local resident found the remains of the child shortly after.
A SCOTTISH man who was left in a coma after being felled by a single punch has been flown back home from Ibiza. Gavin Robertson was assaulted on the Spanish island in an unprovoked attack on August 28. Mr Robertson, aged 28, was put into a medically induced coma due to the seriousness of his condition. He had bleeding on the brain and had developed a severe lung infection. It was not until three weeks later that Mr Robertson, from Stewarton in Ayrshire, came round with his mum Kirsty McMaster at his bedside. A Facebook fundraising page was set up to help pay bills as he did not have travel insurance. It has now been announced in the page that he has landed

Three incidents on Oliva beach A MAN and a woman drowned on Sunday morning in two different incidents on the beach of Oliva. Emergency services were called to three separate incidents in the same morning on the beach in Oliva. A 62-year-old man and a 65-year-old woman both drowned and an 83-year-old man was rescued from the water.
The first incident took place at 9.30am when an 83-year-old man got into difficulty in the water and was rescued. The second incident took place just a couple of hours later when a 62-year-old man was pulled from the water. Police tried to resuscitate him but were unable to save his life. At 12.03pm a 65-year-old woman was pulled from the water and again, they were unable to save her.

What to do in the event of an emergency in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. In Spain there are in effect two groups which most people would understand as being ‘the police.’ The National Police (Policía Nacional) who have jurisdiction in the towns and cities and the Guardia Civil outside the towns and cities. The Local Police are employed by town halls; they basically deal with property found, and enforce local laws. Whilst they have a power of arrest, when exercised they must take the arrested person to the National Police or Guardia Civil according to where the crime took place. National Police and the Guardia Civil deal with all crimes, missing persons etc in their jurisdiction. The National Police also deal with all applications for immigration paperwork, NIEs, EU Citizens Registration and for non EU nationals, Residencia, etc.
The 24 hours national emergency numbers for Spanish speakers are: 091 - police, 061 health emergencies 080 - firefighters. By calling 902 102 112, but only when the perpetrator is unknown, one can give details of certain crimes, including:- burglaries, car theft, theft or loss of documents or belongings. The service is available in English from 9am to 9pm seven days a week, and from 9am to 3pm in French, German and Italian. Having given details of the crime, you must go to the National Police station which you nominate, within 48 hours to make the report using the information supplied on the telephone. In the case of robbery, where threat or force has been used, victims should call 112 at the time for police attendance, or go directly to the police station which covers that area to make a report.

Throughput Europe the general number for all emergencies is 112. In Spain the operators speak English, French, German and Italian, in addition to Spanish and will liaise with the emergency services when the caller does not speak Spanish. No area code is needed and the number can be called from any phone, including mobiles even those without a Spanish SIM card or any credit. You can also fax or SMS 112.
Other useful number are:016, specifically to report instances of gender violence. For problems at sea, the Maritime Rescue Service (Salvamento Seguridad Maritmo) can be contacted by calling 900 202 202, and the Red Cross (Cruz Rojo) on 902 222 292. There is also a Red Cross 24-hour helpline 900 100 333.

Mortgages in Spain CARLOS BAOS WE CAN HELP YOU Conclusions of the Advocate General THE much-awaited conclusions of the Advocate General Mr Szpunar were published on September 10 regarding Case C125-18. This case had been presented to the Court of Justice of the European Union CJEU. It related to a mortgage finalised in Spain using the IRPH interest rate to calculate the amount to be charged. As we have recorded in previous articles, although it is normal for Spanish mortgages to be linked to the EURIBOR rate, there are an estimated 10 per cent of them which are referenced to the IRPH index (which can be the IRPH of CAJAS, IRPH BANKS, or IRPH ENTITIES). The problem with mortgages referenced to IRPH is that this index is higher and therefore more expensive for customers than the
usual EURIBOR rate, the main reason for this, being that this index is fixed to the average of loans granted by Spanish banks but takes into account, not only the average interest at which the Spanish banks lend their money, but also the commissions they charge, etc. In addition, the way this is calculated is quite complex and there are suspicions concerning the possibility of the banks themselves being able to influence the IRPH, in order to make the interest rate increase, which would benefit them, since they could earn more money on those mortgage loans referenced to IRPH. The IRPH has several modalities CAJAS, BANKS or ENTITIES, although at present only the IRPH of Entities continues to subsist. On this issue, we are waiting for the CJEU to issue a judgment in case C125-18, which particularly refers to a Bankia mortgage.
Although of course it is necessary to wait for a final court decision, the truth is that the conclusions of the general lawyer presented in this procedure are very clear, and basically of interest to us as they propose that; 1. These types of clauses in which a mortgage loan is referred to an index such as IRPH, are subject to directive 93/13 and therefore could be declared abusive, due to lack of transparency, etc. 2. That the entities making the loan must provide sufficient information so that the consumer has full knowledge of the index that will be used in his loan and therefore, of the elements that compose it, its regulations and how it is calculated. 3. It is for the national judge in each specific case to check if the bank transparently explained in detail the method of calculating the interest rate and the elements that form
part of the IRPH. As stated above, we must wait for the final ruling from the CJEU but the conclusions are clear and we understand that it would be difficult for the CJEU to rule against the advice received. Those picking up or dropping off passengers at hotels in central areas with narrow streets habitually keep their engines running, pointed out Benidorm’s Transport councillor, Jose Ramon Gonzalez de Zarate. “We have had several meetings with hotels, transport companies and residents,” the councillor said, “and the latter highlight the noise and exhaust fumes from these vehicles as one of their principal problems.”
As well as being obliged to switch off their engines, the town councillors have decided that the stop for coaches in Calle Almendros should be used only when dropping off tourists. When leaving, they should be picked up at the specific coach stops at the Elche park or in Avenida Jaime I. The town hall also reminded coach companies that neither the Almendros nor the Elche stops could be used for excursions, and vehicles should instead park at Jaime I or the deterrent parking areas.

FOLLOWING an outcry from parents, Alfaz’s Instituto high school will retain its usual timetable. The regional government’s Education department announced last June that 200 pupils would have to attend the school between 3pm and 9pm to solve the overcrowding problem. Parents responded with a petition and a demonstration, demanding an immediate reversal of the decision and a more viable solution. The town hall has now remodelled the Instituto’s music room, laboratories and other areas in the school to provide six more classrooms and the Generalitat has agreed that the timetable can return to normal.

Albir - Alfaz NEWS Association with a heart ALFAZ Town Hall renewed its agreement with Corazon Expres (Heart Express). This non-profit making association helps those in need, explained Tone Dyasaland and Enrique Perez, respectively secretary and treasurer of Corazon Expres. The group seeks to link resources to needs, connecting disadvantaged families with volunteers and groups with an altruistic vision of society, they said. At present the association, which has 40 members, collaborates with the Social Services departments at several town halls and associations as well as 15 companies. Last year Corazon Expres took action 150 times and distributed 20 tons of food.

THE town hall is opening another Punto Limpio recycling point for household and ‘difficult’ items. The first is in Calle Reino Unido in Alfaz and the sec-
ond will soon open in Albir’s Calle Tauro. Like Alfaz’s Punto Limpio, the Albir plant will accept domestic waste that should not be left in rubbish bins. This includes paper, card-
board, glass, containers, batteries, electrical goods, household appliances, used oil, rubble from small-scale home improvements, metal, tree prunings, garden waste and furnishings. Environment councillor Luis Morant recently visited the plant, accompanied by managers from SAV, the town’s street cleaning and rubbish collection and Dino Trubianelli, who heads the We Love Albir association. The Punto Limpio can be used free of charge, Morant stressed while touring the recycling point which some Albir residents still oppose.

Altea NEWS A CUBAN, aged 19, accepted a 15-year sentence for trying to kill his ex-girlfriend’s 13year-old brother. The Alicante High Court heard how in September 2018 and armed with a cutter, he hid near the boy’s home in Cap Negret, Altea, waiting for him to put away his bicycle in a space beside the porch. Wearing a hoodie, his face covered by a mask and sunglasses, the attacker leapt at the boy, slashing his neck with the cutter before running off. One of the boy’s relatives and another man working at the property ran after him and found him lying bloodstained on the ground nearby. “Forgive me, forgive me, I didn’t mean to do it,” he told them. The victim had two wounds on his neck, one of which could have been fatal had paramedics not staunched the haemorrhage. The Cuban has been remanded since then, charged with attempted murder. The Fiscal (Public Prosecutor) reduced his recommended sentence from 25 years to 15 as the accused admitted to the

These are now being assessed by a technical team that will decide if these are viable and can be incorporated in the town hall’s Action Plan. “We wanted to give Calpe’s senior citizens a voice and hear their proposals,” said the local mayor Ana Sala. “Nobody knows better than they how we can respond more efficiently to their problems and needs.” The Age-friendly Cities and Communities initiative is promoted by the World Health Organisation to create surroundings and services that ensure an active and healthy old age. This involves providing facilities and policies supporting the Third Age while allowing them to participate fully in local society, the town hall explained.

From mansion to campus CALPE’S emblematic Casa Nova is now an Alicante University campus. The 17th century fortified mansion overlooking the town has been fully restored and was recently inaugurated by Manuel Palomar, rector of Alicante University, Calpe mayor Ana Sala, the town hall’s Education secretary Rebecca Merchan and Josep Ivars, the Casa Nova director. Palomar stressed the university’s hopes of being present throughout the province, bringing the institution closer to the public and society.
“A campus should be an instrument that allows us to come into more continued contact with towns and cities, offering answers to each area’s specific needs with training courses, research and also culture,” Palomar said. Josep Ivars, from the university’s Regional and Physical Geography department and a member of the Institute of Tourism Research added that the new campus would work towards a programme that corresponded to Calpe’s needs.

Tribute to women stands AN imposing tribute to women stands proud in Olula de Rio. The eight-metre high ‘Woman of the Almanzora’ statue is a centerpiece for the municipality’s City of Culture and is intended to honour what Junta de Andalucia President Juanma Moreno described as “the fundamental role of women in all orders of society.” The Junta President was in Olula last week to officially inaugurate artist Antonio Lopez’s colossal creation and the underground exhibition area beneath its foundations explaining how it was made and the significance of the work. Undersea photography comp THE Foto Sub GEAS underwater photography championships begin tomorrow, Friday September 27. The two-day event is organised by Valencia-based Geas Diving Club, which combines underwater photography with profound respect for the environment. The club is non-profitmaking and as the Fotosub competitors will be taking their photographs off the Moraira and Benissa beaches, the organisers receive support from both town halls. GEAS members will also be visiting local schools, giving talks on the importance of not polluting the sea.

Teulada Moraira NEWS Squabble over pay outs An evening THE local government and the Partido Popular (PP) are at loggerheads over councillors’ salaries. According to PP spokesman Raul Llobell, Teulada-Moraira’s mayor Rosa Vila was lying and had broken her promise to renounce her attendance fee for some municipal meetings. In return, the three-party coalition at the town hall pointed out that the PP had lied when it controlled the local council. “There were months when PP councillors charged for attending five meetings, not four,” an official statement claimed. Vila also stated that it would be shown that she had not lied when the municipal accounts were published at the end of the year. The town hall argued that although PP councillor Rosana Caselles declared that she had never charged for attending

Teulada Moraira THE Llebeig Trophy organisers combined the competition with a ‘solidarity kilo’ for the Vega Baja. More than 270 gymnasts from the Valencian Community, Murcia and Cartagena converged on Teulada-Moraira’s municipal sports complex for the competition organised by the Club de Gimnasia Llebeig. Some of the gymnasts were from the affected areas, the organisers revealed later. Both participants and spectators were asked to contribute food staples, cleaning products, school supplies, blankets and other basics for the flood-stricken area on the south side of Alicante. Sandra Romero, president of Club Llebeig, also thanked Teulada-Moraira residents and others in neighbouring towns who responded to the appeal with contributions which will be sent to clubs in municipalities affected by the recent storms and floods.

Moans over drones THE owners of the unauthorised drones increasingly seen over Teulada-Moraira risk €225,000 fines. Drones are covered by specific regulations and there have been numerous complaints from residents regarding those that are equipped with video or cameras. They are not toys, the Ministry of Public Works has pointed out, and circulating images of people or private property taken by drones needs authorisation from those affected, the Ministry said. Regional governments, provincial councils and town halls are obliged to be conversant with drone regulations and their own powers over their use. They also needed to know how to seek assessment on using these unmanned aerial vehicles in carrying out their respective services. The Ministr y stressed that drones used for sports or leisure purposes could not be flown over buildings in

FOLLOWING the summer break, the Teulada-Moraira Fishing Club’s first outing was to the Jucar’s E2. Recent heavy rains had swelled the river considerably and deposited large amounts of mud on the banks to a height of more than one metre above the normal levels. Surprisingly, the river had settled back to a level that was close to normal although the colour of the water was thick and heavy and club members approached the day’s fishing with some apprehension. The first hour produced only one fish between seven anglers and fears of a blank day abounded.

Apprehensions were allayed However, fish gradually began to feed and a reasonable day’s fishing was enjoyed by all members, with Steve Hartwell the overall winner with eight fish weighing in a 40lbs (roughly 18.1 kilos). Grant to combat gender violence

Trenet chugging along nicely LINE 9’s next big operation has just been given the go-ahead by the Generalitat. At its last meeting, the Consell, the regional government’s equivalent of a Cabinet, authorised rail operator Ferrocarriles de la Generalitat Valenciana (FGV) to award the contract to modernise the Teulada-Gata de Gorgos section of track. This has an initial estimate of €18 million and installation must be finished within 12 months. The work will be complex as the six-kilometre track has to negotiate much of the Gar-

ganta de Gata not only via tunnels, but also embankments and cuttings. All of these must be stabilised and an efficient drainage system installed while rails, sleepers and ballast are all to be renewed. Work has now finished on the Calpe-Teulada section and FGV is completing the conditions for the contract to modernise the last Gata to Denia stretch of the Line 9. Tenders will soon be invited for the €18,827 million contract which has a completion deadline of 11.5 months but is technically less difficult than the Calpe-Teulada part of the project, FGV said.
THE national government’s 2018 Budget allocated €20 million to town halls to combat gender violence. Teulada-Moraira Town Hall is to receive €18,601 of which €16,095 corresponds to its presence on the Comprehensive Monitoring System. The remainder has been allocated in proportion to the town’s registered number of inhabitants. These funds will be used to carry out projects and programmes that were included in measures passed by the national parliament in September 2017, the town hall explained. These include 16 workshops on gender diversity for pupils in their second year at the Instituto high school as well as the ‘Accept No in fiestas events’ campaign and a play by the Clowndestino Teatro that analyses the mi-
cro-machismo and mansplaining. “These accompany us in
our day-to-day lives but are so hard to eliminate,” the town hall’s Equality pointed out.

Influential support for Vila MONICA OLTRA, vice-president of the Generalitat joined Teulada-Moraira’s women for the recent Emergencia Feminista demonstrations. HER presence was hardly surprising, as Oltra also heads the regional government’s Equality and Inclusive Policies department, but there was also a clear underlying message in her choice of TeuladaMoraira. Oltra belongs to the Compromis party as does TeuladaMoraira mayor, Rosa Vila, who was sworn in as local mayor last June. This followed a surprise turnaround following the municipal elections when the Partido Popular, which had controlled Teulada-Moraira town hall for decades, failed to obtain an

Possible payout for affected vines THIRTY Teulada-Moraira landowners and growers will be compensated for damage to their vines. The town hall is now assessing the cost of the harm done by the company contracted to clear weeds and vegetation on rural verges, which ignored instructions by spraying glyphosate pesticide which spread to vines in fields and terraces adjoining the roads. The company was supposed to fumigate the verges by hand but instead had used sprinklers that spread
the deadly glyphosate to nearby vines. Owing to the probable contamination of 1,000 vines, the town hall called a meeting with growers whose land adjoins the treated areas. Worst-affected are the Rei, Sant Miquel, Del Pas, La Font d'Horta, La Font Santa roads as well as the Teulada-Moraira Cami Vell. The town hall’s Agriculture head Alejandro Llobell explained to the grape-growers that they can make
claims by filling in a form, indicating the area and number of affected vines so that the town hall can assess the damage and apply for appropriate compensation. The forms are available at the town hall in Teulada and l’Espai la Senieta in Moraira. Llobell apologised for the carelessness of the Sevilla-based ccompany, which he explained was contracted by Teulada-Moraira former local government.

Teulada Moraira OPEN-AIR MARKET: No sign of shortages
Fruit and veg as usual THERE were few shortages at Teulada-Moraira’s weekly fruit and vegetable open-air market. The torrential rain and flooding that recently turned the Vega Baja into a disaster area devastated the area’s agriculture sector, which supplies much of the greenstuff, vegetables and fruit that are eaten in Spain and Europe. The area is unlikely to produce much on a commercial scale until the end of this year at the earliest and winter vegetables will not go
on sale until next spring. Shortages could occur, warned Vega Baja growers, who face €500 million losses. This currently looks unlikely in TeuladaMoraira, where market traders were selling tomatoes from Muchamiel, peaches from Jumilla, pears from Lleida and all types of green vegetables from Almeria. Super-hot Padron peppers from Pilar de la Horadada which escaped the worst of the flooding, were the only Vega Baja
produce available. Meanwhile, further south entire crops of artichokes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower and carrots have been ruined together with the growers’ irrigation systems. “This is catastrophic. I’ve never seen anything like it in my life and I’ve lived through many flash floods,” lamented Eladio Aniorte, president of the Asaja-Alicante agricultural union.

Triana bridge JAVEA Town Hall announced that the Triana bridge could reopen for pedestrians. The municipal engineer and town hall experts, who drafted plans to pull down and reconstruct the existing bridge, have now inspected the structure. The bridge, which crosses the Gorgos rivermouth has been affected by bad weather in the past and was closed during the recent Isolated Depression at High Level (DANA).
The inspection team, accompanied by Javea’s mayor Jose Chulvi, paid particular attention to the underside of the reinforced concrete structure and cracks in the road above. The bridge can safely bear the weight of pedestrians, they found, but decided to close it to vehicles until its rehabilitation, which is due to begin soon. The contract to carry out the work will be awarded this week. It was due to start some time ago, but was delayed after the original contractor pulled out.

A GROUP of 10 wild boar w e re v i d e o e d t ro t t i n g around Javea’s Plaza de la Constitucion. The boar were spotted late at night and almost certainly had come down from the town’s Santa Lucia area, skirted the Antoni Llido high school and reached the Plaza via Calle Rafael Echague. Although not a common sight in most town centres, the presence of the boar is less rare in Javea and other Marina Alta municipalities where they live in comparative comfort in the surrounding countryside. Farmers and growers have complained in the past about the animals destroying their crops and they have often been in road accidents. The board of the Montgo national park also began some time ago to take measures to control the overpopulation of wild boar in the area.

WORK will begin on extending Javea’s main drainage network. Contracts have been awarded to four different firms to connect two sewage systems in Montgo, one in Lluca and another in the Cabo de la Nao area. The town hall is investing €54,286 in the first phase of the project which will eventually solve the main drainage problems of homes which are still using septic tanks in these areas. The work has to be carried out to comply with the LOTUP, the Valencian Community’s new urban development law, the town hall explained. This is more stringent than existing regulations and makes clear that, where economically viable, properties must be connected to the sewage system. The use of septic tanks in the four areas will be permitted only in exceptional circumstances.

Javea NEWS Autumn and winter activities THE Civic Punt centre in Javea’s Arenal announced its programme for the 2019-2020 season. As well as offering information and citizens’ advice between 9.30am and 3pm from Mondays to Thursdays, the centre also organises a wide range of workshops for adults as well as Spanish classes. For children there are booster classes for primary pupils, fiestas, games, workshops and the Escoleta holiday school at Easter. sports facilities. Municipal investment in preventive measures and protection had proved its worth, Chulvi said, while yet again alerts from the Local Administrations Emergencies Coordination Centre had played an important part in helping Javea to prepare for the bad weather.
Support for women JAVEA was bathed in violet light in support of the nationwide Emergencia Feminista protests. Violet symbolises the women’s movement in Spain, and Calle Calvary, the three windmills, the San Bartolome parish church and the town hall façade were flooded with the colour thanks to a local firm which provided the service free of charge. Several hundred people, including men and boys, lined the Plaza de la Iglesia as they seconded Feminist Emergency’s calls for protests following a summer when so many women were killed by men. “Is it normal for a woman to be murdered every two days in July?” it was asked during the demonstration. “Isn’t it serious that sex crimes increased by 50 per cent in July and August? How can we talk about peace when more than 40 women were killed?” It was pointed out that a rape is also reported every six hours, despite pioneering legislation in equality and gender violence and a recently-signed State Treaty. “Women deserve the right to a life, freedom and sexual integrity, the right to honour and privacy, the right to move freely and the right to live in peace.”

Distributing water THE Army distributed food and water to homes in Almoradi. Driving through the flooded streets to deliver supplies to families trapped in their homes, the army went from door to door in the horrendous conditions caused by the Vega Baja floods. The situation has been improving little by little as the flow of the river has begun to decline. Predictions were that further flooding was unlikely. Houses, however, are still in a state of repair and it will cost thousands for the homes and buildings to be restored following the disaster. Residents are busy cleaning up and rebuilding their towns.

Crime down on last year CRIME in Huercal-Overa is down on last year, the local council reported. Commenting on a gathering of local officials and law enforcement agencies to discuss the municipality’s public security, the local authority also said Huercal-Overa is ‘one of the safest in the province.’ Mayor Francisca Lourdes Fernandez, Sub-delegate of the government in Almeria, Manuel de la Fuente Arias, along with representatives from the Sub-delegation, Local Police, Guardia Civil, autonomous police and the Junta de Andalucia government delegation looked at future measures and policies. One of the most immediate matters is next month’s fiesta celebrations. They also agreed to draw up a municipal security plan and to modify the protocol for collaboration and coordination between the law enforcement services for the protection of gender violence victims. The mayor highlighted the excellent relations between the different law enforcement bodies and commented on the positive impact this has on residents’ security. Fernandez said the council will “continue working to make Huercal-Overa an increasingly safe municipality with coordinated actions with the security forces, whom we thank for their dedication.”

Waiter saves diner’s life A MAN aged 75 who was choking to death had his life saved by a waiter. The unidentified man was enjoying a meal with his wife at Venta La Butibamba in La Cala de Mijas (Malaga) when food blocked his airway. Initially his wife tried to help, but her efforts were proving ineffective. That is when restaurant manager Víctor Parras, aged 28, stepped in. He knew how to practise the Heimlich manoeuvre, as the abdominal compression technique is known, which is performed as first aid to help expel an object that obstructs the airway. Everything happened very quickly, in two distressing minutes that were recorded by the security camera of the establishment. Initially the manoeuvre didn’t work and the man started to turn purple, so Victor redoubled his efforts. Finally, the meat was dislodged and the man could breathe again. He refused a doctor and calmly finished his meal.

Facelift for centre THE Senior Citizens’ Day Centre in Torre del Mar has received a facelift thanks to a council investment. The deputy mayor of Torre del Mar, Jesus Perez Atencia, and councillor Jose David Segura visited the site last week to oversee progress on the transformation. Work on the popular centre included repairs to furniture, benches and facilities for games and exercises, repainting, gardening and industrial cleaning works. Atencia said: “We wanted to give a more modern image to the Senior Day Centre of Torre del Mar, integrating it into the entire ornamental line of the village. LGBTI advice centres THE Valencian council has outsourced advice to gays, lesbians, transsexuals, bisexuals and intersexuals to the most well-known associations in the region. The programme, named Orienta, is a pioneering initiative in the Valencian Community and one of the few public services of this type in the country. Its function is to inform and guide members of the LGBTI community, friends and families who need help in matters of gender identity and sexual orientation, as well as psychological, social, legal, administrative or health support. “We help from trans people who are starting the process to people who have suffered aggressions or any other hate crime,” said the director of the service, Victor Sanchez. Although it has been active since July 1, the launch of the programme will take place in September. The service is staffed by seven professionals with different profiles, most of them graduates from LGTBI activism networks and social work.
Truce in conflict A PEACE pact has been agreed by warring neighbours. The Association of Neighbours and Friends of Santa Catalina has signed an ‘agreement of coexistence’ with businesses in the area after a row over noise and disturbance. The agreement has been reached with the Restaurants and Leisure Association of Santa Catalina and the Municipal Market to try to create a way forward to prevent future conflict. President of the Association of Neighbours and Friends of Santa Catalina, Jacinta Galindo, explained that the aim was to create harmony and understanding between all three parties. Mr Galindo said: “The signatory entities are committed to ensure the care of the environment, respect the rest of the neighbours, promote local products, support the small and medium business of the neighbourhood, and improve relations between neighbours and institutions.” There has been confrontation throughout the summer between restaurant owners and residents over noise and obstruction from the terraces throughout the area. This agreement is to allow the parties to work together and states an understanding that ‘Santa Catalina is a district where most of its development is based on leisure and the market and we have to understand each other.’

Green energy
A BRITISH investment company SDCL, which specialises in energy generation, expects to take over a portfolio of energy production plants from an unnamed source in Spain at an estimated cost of €64 million. The purchase, which has yet to be officially approved, will bring five combined heat and power plants, two olive processing plants and two biomass plants to the company. It is believed that the operation not only has longterm supply agreements with a number of major companies but also sup plies the National Grid.

According to media sources, Atresmedia, the owner of Antena 3 TV and La Sexta, and telecom munications company Telefónica, are applying for approval to set up this new company to take advan tage of the large perceived market here in Spain.
Both organisations are strong in their own partic ular areas, with Telefónica (and Movistar) having a large share of the pay TV market, while Atresmedia already produces large volumes of new TV, some of which is already sold to Netflix. This new company will not just focus on the Spanish market but will look to enter into other Spanishspeaking countries and must have an eye open to the size of the Latino population in the USA.

IRPH Mortgage opinion By John Smith THERE are differing views concerning an initial indication from the advocate general of the Court of Justice of the EU (CJEU) in respect of the mortgage interest based on Spain’s mortgage price index (IRPH). In publishing his opinion, which is not binding, he infers that there is a possibility that the conditions sur rounding such mortgages, issued main ly in the building boom years in Spain could be considered abusive.

Flush sensibly A NEW campaign in Malaga Province may well be picked up throughout Spain as it reminds the public of the dangers of irresponsible use of sanitary wipes and napkins. Acosol - the public water company of the Costa del Sol and the water distributors Hidralia, have launched the campaign with a 20-second video aimed at social media. It points out the problems caused to both the sewer systems and the environment by flushing away such wipes.
According to the Acosol spokesperson, the company collected more than 2,000 tons of these wipes from its sewage plants in 2018. It was revealed that this is the largest type of non-degradable waste being dealt with by the company. The campaign, which is supported by posters and brochures, wants to explain to the public the inadvisability of simply flushing away such items and also to promote to manufacturers the need to make them biodegrable.
The matter was referred to the CJEU by a Barcelona court as the holder of such a mortgage was making a claim against his lender arguing that the cal culations surrounding the mortgage in terest charged were not clear and that his lender was charging more than if he had the more common mortgage tied to the EURIBOR rate. In essence, the advocate has sug gested that, if there is not total clarity in the wording of the mortgage docu ment, then there may be reasonable cause for complaint, but any final deci sion concerning such cases would actu ally rest with the Spanish courts. Some lawyers believe that assuming the CJEU supports his view, then there will be a significant number of cases brought against Spanish lenders with the opportunity for compensation to be awarded, but the Association of Spanish Banks takes a different view, believing that borrowers would have understood what they were letting themselves in for. The final ruling from the court will not be until next year and Spanish banks are making no special provisions in their 2019 accounts for compensa tion pay outs.

UK trade deals sparse WITH Brexit fast approaching (possibly), there is every probability that the European Market for British goods and import of EU goods could be heavily curtailed until such time as a trade agreement is entered into. In the meantime, Britain will have to rely on World Trade Organisation terms, which do generally see the imposition of tariffs, or make some very hasty trade deals if that is possible. Once the result of the Brexit referendum was known, the British Government set up a special department to deal with promoting trade deals. It has so far entered into some ‘continuity deals’ which means that the agreements will basically be the same as if the UK was still part of the EU. There are 13 such deals in place covering much of Africa, Central America, the Caribbean, the Pacific Islands, Palestine and other smaller territories with the only major deals being struck with Iceland, Norway, South Korea and Switzerland.

Yes you read it correctly 95 per cent! Al most unbelievably, on receiving the live out come, despite the result being overwhelm ing, some of the nodoubt carefully selected studio panel, still argued that the poll had somehow been conducted in the ‘wrong ar eas’. Give us all a break. Just how convincing do these results have to be before the snowflakes and arrogant ‘knowitall’ elite can admit they are in the wrong? Listen carefully all of you so called ex perts! Whatever ‘area,’ time of the month or ‘wrong leaves on the track’, 95 per cent against 5 per cent is an utterly decisive vote against the outof touch policies constantly being jammed down the throats of the British public. You only have to ask anyone living outside your privileged, selfindulgent, naive bubble. The socalled diversity and in tegration, which tries to force utterly differ ent cultures to exist together as one great

CULTURAL INTEGRATION: Recognise the problems and quell the rising disquiet. big ‘happy family’ simply doesn’t work. No one is happy. The different cultures aren’t happy, the mish mashes of diverse religion ists aren’t happy and the indigenous popula tion, who used to be happy, is quite rightly not only extremely unhappy, but is also be coming increasingly angry with the whole sorry state of affairs.
It’s also time the media egocentrics stopped insulting the public’s intelligence and desisted from churning out this positive glut of agonizingly PC commercials, where every second TV ad shows mixed marriages and diverse families living in blissful harmo ny. Or depicts walks in the park, with a care fully chosen cross section of cultures, all
playing happily together. It is all a cruel illu sion. It simply isn’t true. I’m not trying to stir up racial disharmony or religious unrest; I’m simply pointing out that, the sooner we recognise that problems truly do exist, and that this whole diversity experiment is in its present form an unmitigated disaster, then the sooner we will quell the rising disquiet and begin a positive approach to sort out the problems. All the time we listen to the leftie snowflakes spouting their propaganda and lying about the true situation and con tinue to let the politicians ride slip shod over our democracy, the quicker we will slide into physical confrontations on our streets. Sooner or later yet another Enoch Powel prophecy will manifest and it will all be far too late. In closing I hasten to add that this piece was very closely akin to a column I wrote nearly twenty years ago. At the time it was laughed at and simply dismissed as a ‘Leapy rant’. E-trade plagued by scams MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I don’t like Facebook. I may have mentioned it 100 times before, but I use it because certain information I need is only posted there. Something I have used it for is to sell a mobility scooter that I purchased and no longer want. It works perfectly well by the way if anybody wants it. Anyway, I put it on Facebook at least €200 cheaper than any other; and nothing. All I got was peo ple asking questions, me answering them and then nothing. Then I tried to sell it to the people that were obviously profes sional retailers – but nobody was interest ed. I had the same problem with eBay. I have friends in the UK who actually get a living selling stuff on there, and I’m talking about secondhand clothes, bags, baby stuff etc. I, on the other hand, was told that it was very hard to sell anything on Spanish eBay because all the punters thought everything was a scam. When I
did try and sell something, I got the re verse. I had a couple of decent watches I wanted to get rid of. They had boxes and papers and were brand new; never been worn. Well as soon as I put them on, the scammers started. I had one person tell me that the money would be sent as soon as they received the watch and, as it was a gift, could I send it to somewhere in Nige ria. He gave me his UK address to be safe which I googled and found never existed. I had another who wanted to send me a cheque because he didn’t have PayPal. The cheque would be for £500 more than the watch and could I send him the differ ence by Western Union. Generously, I could keep £100 of it for helping him. Of course, what these people do is send you worthless payments hoping you will send the product which, of course, I didn’t but I have to say these scammers are a persis tent bunch. I know someone that sold an item and the buyer then demanded pay ment for a good review and, if they didn’t pay, they would start making sure they got bad reviews. This, of course, was just another trick to try and get money for nothing. After refusing, the item was re turned as ‘not as advertised’. Shame these people don’t spend as much time setting up legit businesses!

This is more for the future of the young and NOT for the old, so anyone over the age of 75 should not be given the vote, which I am one, but 16yearolds and upwards should. To link this question in a general election is so wrong to have the issues involved with many others is a con trick as you and I know. I think that a win to stay in would be a bigger percentage now than the leave vote got last time, as I think most people that have any logic would conclude, what are you all fright ened of? AFTER 178 years in business Thomas Cook has gone under with debts of £1.7 billion (€1.92 billion). There are around 150,000 customers abroad and 600,000 in total affected, including those with holidays and flights already booked. The fleet of 40 jumbo jets hired to bring people home from overseas is said to be costing £150 million (€169.8 million). Total cost of compensating people for their lost holidays and for the emergency repatriation of stranded customers could reach as high as £600 million (€679 million). The reasons for the collapse of the world’s most famous tour company - and one that has been closely associated with Spain since the start of package tours to the nation in the 1960s - boil down to a disastrous merger with My Travel in 2007. It left the company saddled with enormous debts. The full price became evident in May when a £1.5 billion loss (€1.7 billion) - including a £1 billion (€1.13 billion) write-off from the merger - was announced. But could it have been different? A £900 million (€1.02 billion) rescue package was in place when the banks - led by taxpayer-owned RBS - demanded another £200 million (€226 million) in funding. It is somewhat ironic that a bank that received billions in bail-out funds from the taxpayer was not prepared to be a little more flexible for a giant company that employed 9,000 people in the UK alone.

Flu jab alternative A STICK-ON patch could spell the end of the flu jab. Scientists have created a patch which could protect against flu as ef fectively as the traditional vaccine, new research compiled by Universi ty of Rochester suggests. The search for an alternative to flu jabs has been ongoing for decades amid concerns the method can cause patient anxiety, has to be ad ministered by a medical professional and creates biohazard waste. Researchers now believe they have made a breakthrough after testing the patch on mice. The new patch around the size of a standard plaster contains syn thetic proteins that make the skin FEEL like you’re juggling too much and got too much to do? Well rather than feeling stressed, it could actually be good for you. Scientists say their research shows that the busier people are, the sharper their minds and the better their memories. Scientists at the University of Texas, Dallas, said that packing
more “permeable”, as effectively as a flu vaccine. Trials on mice showed the patch “initiated a robust immune re sponse”. And the rodents showed no increased risk of infection over the next three months, suggesting the patch did not permanently af fect their skin barrier. The team stress, however, more animal studies need to be carried out, with the patch hopefully being tested in human trials “in the fu ture”. “Scientists have been studying needlefree vaccine approaches for nearly two decades, but none of the technologies have lived up to the hype,” study author Dr Benjamin
Miller said. “Our patch over comes a lot of the chal lenges faced by mi croneedle patches for vaccine delivery, the main method that's been tested over the years. “And our efficacy and lack of toxicity make me excited about the prospect of a product that could have huge implications for global health.” Flu jabs are effective but can come with a host of problems, in cluding pain and some people hav ing a fear of needles. Lemon herb chicken Ingredients 4 chicken thighs salt freshly ground black pepper 1 lemon sliced in wedges, 68 slices 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 5 cloves diced garlic 200ml cup dry white win 1 tbs grated lemon zest (2 lemons) 2 tbs freshly squeezed lemon juice 1½ tsp dried oregano 1 tsp chopped fresh thyme leaves, Method Preheat the oven to 180°. First prepare the chicken by rinsing them and drying with paper towel. Trim any excess fat from the breast and place in a baking dish skin side up. Repeat with the remaining chicken. Sprinkle the breast with salt and fresh ground pepper. Now slice one lemon lengthwise into six to eight wedges and set among the chicken, add the dry white wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, dried oregano, and minced thyme. Using a brush, lightly brush the chicken breast skins with the oil mix ture so it will brown and crisp during baking and then add the four sprigs of thyme on top the chicken breasts. Cook for about 30 mins or until cooked through. Serve with salad, potatoes or cous cous.

BARRY DUKE A WHILE back I disengaged myself from London’s LBC radio because I could no longer tolerate the interminable whining of Brexit supporters who thought their pipe-dream of an EU-free utopia was turning into a nightmare. I also stopped reading news reports about the process and warned my hus band that, if he were to utter words like ‘Brexit’ and ‘Boris Johnson’ in my pres ence I would file for divorce. My disengagement came after I re alised the illinformed claptrap hysteri cally screamed down LBC phonein lines by Brexiteers was doing my head in. But divorcing myself from LBC and other media proved as hard as quitting smoking. After 48 hours my willpower crumbled. I turned on the radio to catch up with all the grotesque details of the prorogation of Parliament and the latest antics of Boris Johnson, a manchild who has the morals of a feral tomcat and only one discernible tal ent: he can give masterclasses in lying to Pentecostal preachers. Had anything changed for the bet ter? No! In fact matters were a whole lot worse, as evidenced by a report that

BORIS JOHNSON: We don’t need him and his deranged cronies leading the country. hate crimes committed by children and young people in Cheshire’s schools and colleges had spiked in the immediate aftermath of the EU referendum. The Chief Executive of antibullying charity Kidscape, Lauren SeagerSmith, said that antiimmigration rhetoric globally had ‘given rise to attitudes of hate, fearmongering and intolerance.’
She believed kids were aping the abominable language and behaviour of their parents and other adults towards people of colour, Muslims and gays that dramatically spiked after the vote. The September report in the Chester Standard came after the BBC reported in June this year that racerelated hate crime had significantly increased in
England and Wales since 2016. Eryl Jones, from charity Show Racism the Red Card, was quoted as saying ‘it’s fairly obvious Brexit has been a major influence. The feeling is a lot of people believe they have the right to express their racist feelings or to show hatred.’ After LBC reported on the Cheshire findings, and interviewed the parent of
a mixed race lad who had to be re moved from his school because of racist bullying, a Dutch caller said he firmly believed that Britain was now in the grip of ‘persecution mania,’ with people laying the blame for all of their social ills on the EU, on foreigners, and everyone they regarded as ‘others.’ A nation once highlyregarded for tolerance and fair play, he ruefully said, was now ‘coming apart at the seams.’ Brexiteers, who imagine that other countries will follow Britain’s lead in ex iting the European Union, are living in a fog of selfdelusion. No country in the world, let alone the EU, would expose itself to the ridicule Britain has heaped upon itself. In 2017, former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg said Brexit was the ‘stupidest thing any country had ever done,’ adding ‘it is really hard to under stand why a country that was doing so well wanted to ruin it.’ We need people like Bloomberg to lead the country, not Johnson and his deranged cronies.

Dependable hybrid and electric models BRITAIN’S most and least reliable new and used cars have been revealed, with hybrid models among the most dependable and Land Rover and Renault owners found to have the least reliable cars. The 2019 Reliability Survey from Britain’s consumer champion and new car buying platform, What Car?, con ducted in association with MotorEasy, used reader feedback from more than 18,000 drivers to find the most depend able cars up to five years old.

Hybrid cars from Japanese brands topped the reliability charts, with the Lexus CT (2011 present) and Toyota Yaris Hybrid (2011 present) receiving a 100 per cent reliability rating from own ers, indicating they suffered no faults over the previous 12 months. The only other car to match this achievement was the Kia Soul (2014 2019). Although electric vehicles and hybrids have the best average reliability rating (96.1 per cent) of the 10 car classes in the survey, not all cars with this technology are dependable. The Renault Zoe (2013
present) scored a lowly 82.3 per cent, with 44 per cent of owners saying their car had suffered a fault. The worst vehicle class for reliability was Luxury SUVs at 86.5 per cent, with the Range Rover (2013 present) and Range Rover Velar (2017 present) prov ing the least bulletproof. Almost half of Velar owners (48 per cent) said their car experienced a fault in the past 12 months, while 35 per cent of Range Rover owners had needed to visit a garage, with battery issues most com mon.
TOYOTA YARIS HYBRID: Received a 100 per cent reliability rating from owners. At brand level, Lexus vehicles were found to be most reliable, with a 99.3 per cent reliability rating, followed by Toyota and Suzuki. Japanese and South Korean brands dominated the top 10 brand reliability rankings, occu pying seven of the places. The worst brand for reliability was Land Rover, with an 81.3 per cent rating, just below Renault and Jeep. What Car?’s Reliability Survey asked owners whether their car had gone wrong in the past 12 months, how long repairs took and how much they had to
pay to get their vehicle back on the road. Of the 18,119 cars included in the study, 26 per cent had experienced at least one fault, with the most common problem a nonelectrical engine fault. Diesel drivers were more likely to have visited a garage than owners of other types of car, with diesels accounting for 58 per cent of all faults. When it came to paying for repairs, 11 per cent of owners had to fork out between £101 and £200, while 3 per cent of repairs ex ceeded £1,500.

SEAT’S biofuel scheme SEAT is going to participate until 2023 in the Life Landfill Biofuel project, which was recently app ro v e d b y t h e E u ro pean Commission, whose goal is to obtain renewable gas from municipal landfills. The aim is to achieve more efficient manage ment by obtaining bio methane from an indige nous, abundant energy source. The project will be devel oped with other partners for the next four years and has an overall budget of €4.6, of which the Euro pean Commission will fund 55 per cent. Andrew Shepherd, who is responsible for SEAT’s re newable gas projects, em phasised that “this project will enable us to make headway in the develop ment and research into biomethane as a fuel. Our ultimate aim is to guaran
tee zero environmental im pact for CO2 emissions in the entire life cycle of vehi cles.” With the goal of boosting the circular economy, ener gy efficiency and emissions reduction, SEAT is currently working on the Life Methamorphosis project to obtain biomethane from previously selected waste and animal slurry from a farm in Lleida. The new Life Landfill Biofuel project is a step further as the raw ma terial originates directly from the landfill, without prior separation. The European Union is going to limit to 10 per cent the amount of munici pal waste that can be dumped in landfills by 2035. For this reason, con verting waste into vehicu lar biofuel is one solution to this environmental chal lenge. Other organisations also participating in this new project include FCC, IVECO, The University of Granada, the CARTIF Foun
dation, SYSADVANCE and Gasnam. SEAT has also developed a similar project with Aqualia to convert waste water into biofuel. There are close to half a million landfill sites in Eu rope, so the development and research into the oper ating procedures to obtain biomethane from waste rep resents a business opportu nity to convert waste into a source of energy, which at the same time would con tribute to lowering environ mental emissions. In this sense, there is great potential in establish ing certificates of origin for the production of bio methane. This system would facilitate the devel opment of the industry in Spain, as it is being done in other European Union countries, and being able to transfer these certifi cates among sectors would open up several opportuni ties to the transport indus try.

Breathless, irresistible, scarcely believable… City ripped Watford to shreds with the sort of blistering start that may not be wit nessed again by the Premier League for a very long time. If the champions were still angry at last weekend’s de feat to Norwich, it was Wat ford who paid a heavy price. With 18 minutes of this game gone, City had scored five times. Five times. It was mesmerising foot ball that the shortsleeved capacity crowd lapped up in the early autumn sunshine. Where to begin? Silva started the rout as he arrived at the optimal moment to turn in Kevin De Bruyne’s superb low cross with just 52 seconds on the clock. And the celebrations had barely died down as Watford came within a whisker of equalising through Gerard Deulofeu’s clever run and low shot that was palmed around the post by Emerson. City soon doubled their lead, though, with De Bruyne racing forward be fore feeding Mahrez who was brought down by Ben Foster – a clear penalty. Aguero stepped up to stroke home his eighth of the season and his 100th Eti had goal – a feat only achieved by two other play ers in the Premier League era. LECLERC told Ferrari their tactics were “not fair” as he lost victor y in the Singapore Grand Prix to his team mate. Leclerc led the opening stages of the race ahead of Brit Hamilton and German Se bastian Vettel. However, Vettel moved into the lead of the race after Fer rari pitted him on the lap be fore Leclerc. The pair remained in the same order until the end of the race. But Leclerc repeated ly complained the pit stop strategy has spoiled his chances of winning. Vettel’s early pit stop al lowed him to benefit from fresher tyres sooner than Leclerc. That pace advantage meant Leclerc came out of the pits behind him when he made his subsequent pit stop.
