ACTING Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez took to the air on Monday September 16 to get a full view of southern Spain’s flood stricken regions as the death toll rose to six and air and train services were disrupted for a third day. Sanchez commanded a government helicopter to take to the air to see for himself the devastation left behind in the wake of the recent storms. He witnessed first-hand where flash floods had swept away cars and swamped homes in the regions of Valencia, Murcia and eastern Andalucia. Prime Minister Sanchez was clearly distressed at what he saw flying over Orihuela in Alicante. He ordered the helicopter to land so he could personally visit a command centre for emergency operations. Sanchez met with many emergency ground workers, listening intently to their experiences of the events of the last few days of horror. Sanchez went on to offer his condolences to the families who have lost loved ones before strenuously making the point that the Government would be doing everything possible in its power to assist survivors of the disaster. homes and families.” Locals clapped profusely as the Spanish Prime Minister reboarded his helicopter for ministerial meetings to arrange the aid required.

A WEBSITE has been created for all those affected in the Gota Fria. A local in the Murcia region after hearing of the damage and destruction caused, decided to set up a local help page to try get people together to help one another in

nated blankets, food and even boats to get some of the animals to safety. As the clean up continues, with people needing food, water and clothes, the page remains active in the hope to bring the communities together.

Military Rescue MILITARY emergency units were called by Spain’s prime minister to help with search and rescue in the floods. Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, tweeted on Friday night on social media: ‘A difficult night, some areas remain on alert amid torrential rains, sadly we mourn a third victim in Almeria.’ He continued: ‘All my love to all the families of those that have died and to all those affected by the weather. Let’s step up the precautions.’ The military have been helping to evacuate people from their homes in the flooded area of Orihuela following the overflow of River Segura, via
means of boat and helicopter. They have also been on hand to rescue families trapped inside their homes including many elderly people unable to move from their flooded buildings. Around 70 elite soldiers on the Mando de Operaciones especiales (MOE) have been in action including MOE helicopter pilots, 300 soldiers of the Unidad de Emergencies (UME), 700 officials of Guardia Civil, and 40 fire brigades. Hundreds of police officers, volunteers and members of the Red Cross have also committed to helping, sometimes themselves ending up in dramatic bailout situations.

Roads shut WATER has affected many roads and caused some roads to collapse. Roads that have been damaged in the floods include the road between Almoradi and Dolores, N332, between Algorfa and Almoradi, the road to Playa Glea and a landslide on the N340 towards the tunnel in Orihuela.

Tunnel rescue THREE motorists have been rescued from the A-P7 motorway tunnel at Pilar de la Horadada, which flooded Friday. The emergency services used a boat to reach at least one passenger who remained trapped under the bridge with his vehicle. The tunnel flooded within seconds trapping travellers inside.
Bag stolen A WOMAN has had her handbag stolen from La Zenia Boulevard whilst she sat down to rest after shopping at the complex. The woman did not see who took her bag but explained she “took her eyes off it for two minutes” to find it had been snatched when she went to grab her purse.

NATIONAL DISH: Valencia plans to turn the famous paella into a world recognised dish.
THE BEAUTY OF PAELLA Sunday September 22 will see the whole world come together in celebration of one of Spain’s best loved dishes. WORLD PAELLA DAY, now in its second year, is aiming to turn the National dish of Spain into a World Heritage Site, much like what Italy has done for its famous pizzas. The Department of Tourism and Relations in the Valencian region have called on all the various groups throughout the l’Alfàs del Pi area, the dish’s traditional home, to come to-
gether for a competition to enable the dish to become an ‘Intangible Patrimony of the Humanity.’ The contest will take place the following Sunday, September 29 at the municipal sports centre in l’Alfàs del Pi from 12pm until 5pm. Residents of the municipality are being called to attend the festival and to bring their own interpretation of
the dish, which traditionally uses rabbit and chicken, but is also now adapted to use, sea food, chorizo and shellfish. According to UNESCO regulations, in order for the dish to be classed as a World Heritage Site, the dish needs ‘practice, ritual, custom for the preparation and an art for its preparation.’

Dog Reunited
Donations Needed
AN owner has been reunited with her lost d o g a f t e r s h e d i s a p p e a re d b e f o re t h e floods. The dog named Cinnamon had escaped and was unable to be seen after her owner began to worry the weather had taken her. A man contacted the owner to let her know her dog had been spotted near Torrevieja Hospital on seeing a Facebook post about the missing canine. The owner said she had been “praying every second” for her safe return and is extremely grateful for the amount of people keeping a look out for her beloved pet. Luckily the dog seemed unharmed and in a healthy state. This gives hope to many others who have also had pets go missing and hope to have them reunited soon.
HARDSHIP funds have been set up by businesses and charities in communities suffering from flooding. Many local companies and charities have come together to help those who have found themselves with nothing in the repercussions of the Gota Fria. Collecting items of clothing, blankets and food and water, the following charities, local businesses and centres are currently taking in items to distribute to people and families in rescue centres. Those involved include Mabs Costa Blanca, Benijofar Town Hall, Auld Dubliner, Orihuela, Colegio de Cuba, Sophia Wellness Centre, Formentera, Nomad Supermarket Torrevieja, Majik Mobiles Benijofar. All donations will be going directly to those affected by the storms and flood, many of whom are children. As well as the main essentials, some companies are also accepting things such as school supplies for children who have had their equipment destroyed in the storms.

SCHOOLS across Orihuela Costa, Murcia and the Valencian community closed last week. Some schools reopened Monday but Orihuela suspended classes until Wednesday.
Friends helped NEIGHBOURS of a flooded house in Villamartin pulled together to help an elderly friend and neighbour get her furniture off the floor and out of the water. The woman who lives alone was not able to lift the furniture and was grateful for her friends’ help.
Cars towed CARS that were damaged have been towed out of the way via a helpful expat and his 4x4. Offering his vehicle to anyone who was stuck, the man helped to tow vehicles away from flooded areas for residents unable to move their damaged vehicles.
Bar celebrates GREEN SODS Irish Bar in Villamartin, celebrated a golf victory this weekend when the ladies equivalent of the Ryder Cup, Golf Solheim Cup, were victorious. The European team beat the USA, which caused the guests in the bar to celebrate the tremendous victory.
Fishy business ROTTEN fish washed up on the beach is being sold to consumers. Bluefin tuna that is arriving on the coasts of Cartagena, San Javier and San Pedro del Pinatar is being picked up by illegal traders. The Fishermen’s Guild of Cartagena have informed the Head of the Fisheries Ser-
vice and the Seprona division of the Guardia Civil that poachers are selling fish found on the beaches of La Manga and Cabo de Palos. Bartolomé Navarro of the Carthaginian guild warned: “This fish can provoke health problems because it is rotten.” All the specimens come from a farm owned by the group Ricardo Fuentes, off the coast of Pinar del Río. The price of the kilo of bluefin tuna, at the fish market, usually ranges from €14 to €15, but the F i s h e r m e n ’s G u i l d o f Cartagena said this fish is selling at €3 per kilo. They carry the tuna on ice in car boots and try to sell it to shops, restaurants and passing pedestrians. Social networks have
shared videos and photographs of people approaching the beaches of La Manga and Cabo de Palos, armed with knives, to cut the tuna weighing 200 kilos. Some beaches have been closed to prevent this practice from continuing. It has been estimated that ‘between 500 and 600 kilos of decomposing tuna’ has been marketed illegally in the last week. The sea was full with floating bodies of 80 and 90 dead tuna and it is estimated there were 1,000 tons of tuna amounting to a loss of €40 million. The Local Police of Cartagena have found discarded fish heads and tails strewn on the beach. Dead tuna is now being removed for disposal.
Mr Navarro of the Fishermen’s Guild said he has stumbled on dozens of dead fish. He added: “This S u n d a y, o n t h e b e a c h o f Levante de Cabo de Palos there were 30 or 40 stranded specimens, I saw a gentleman chopping one with the knife and told him that the fish was not to eat, but he shouted at me ‘And what do you know.’ I didn’t tell him anything else because he got a little aggressive.” The bluefin tuna follows very strict controls of the Maritime Secretariat, both for production and fishing, whose season runs from May 15 to June 15. “These specimens are not suitable for sale or consumption because they have been dead days,” Mr Navarro warned.
Building collapsed A BUILDING has collapsed in Orihuela after the weather destroyed the foundations of the structure. The building is in the Plaza de Santa Lucia, Orihuela. The front of the building had crumbled bringing down both the first and second floor into the streets. After severe flooding damaged the foundations below, the dangerous structure began to crumble. Luckily no-one was injured or present in the building at the time of collapse.

Rescue drama A GRATEFUL mum and her ailing baby have been rescued by Local Police. The Guardia Civil of Dolores helped to rescue and transport a mother and child from their home to the hospital after they spent the night trapped in their flooded home with the baby running a high fever. Both mum and baby are doing well and are grateful for the help and fast response of the emergency services who have been working non stop over the past week to get people out of their flooded homes and to safety. They used a rubber dinghy to help push the pair through the high waters to enable them to leave the area in order to get help for the infant.

The situation had been improving little by little as the

Houses, however, are still in a state of repair and it will cost thousands for the homes and buildings to be restored following the disaster. Residents are now beginning the clean-up and rebuilding their towns.

GOLFERS were left unable to play on the golfing greens throughout the flooded areas as the courses suffered severe damage after the vicious floods. Golf courses throughout Murcia shut after they suffered damage to the golfing greens making them unable to allow visitors to play. One golfer described his disappointment as the golfing trip to the Costa Blanca was not as he expected due to hazardous conditions. “It’s unfortunate, but unavoidable,” he told Euro Weekly
News after he was faced with the cancellation of many of his golfing retreat plans. Many courses and agents received complaints of cancellations that were unavoidable on some courses, mainly in the Murcia region due to excessive flooding. Most courses were due to reopen after the weekend whereas some others were unable to predict when their greens would be playable again. Golfers are advised to ring their agents or the golf courses directly before planning their trips.

Dutchman dies
A DUTCHMAN has been found dead after being swept away by floods in Dolores. Emergency services had been searching for the 66year-old man who had fallen into a ditch and was dragged by the fast-flowing waters on Sunday. The Guardia Civil had been looking for the man in the several kilometres between Dolores, San Fulgencio and New Daya. His body was discovered by a volunteer worker in a drainage ditch as waters lowered on Tuesday. The Guardia Civil flew a helicopter to the site to recover the body which was taken to the local mortuary. The discovery brings the death toll to seven.

School timetable SCHOOLS beginning the new term have faced chaos during the floods. Students of Orihuela returned to class on Wednesday, September 18, while in Almoradi they will remain suspended until further notice. On Monday, September 16 and Tuesday, September 17, the schools of Orihuela remained closed to rehabilitate everything damaged by the floods. In Almoradi, which has been completely flooded, the school and centres will remain closed until further notice. Callosa de Segura resumed classes on Monday, September 16 in all schools except the CEIP Rafael Altamira, since it is necessary to carry out repair work. In Redován, the CEIP Sagrados Corazones opened on Monday, September 16, as well as the Pasitos and San Carlos nursery schools. Redován Secondary School was closed on Monday and Tuesday. In Rojales, classes were suspended for Monday, September 16 as well as at L’Encantà Secondary School, Miguel Hernández Poet Primary School and Municipal Infant School. In Catral, classes resumed on Monday, September 16 as normal except for the nursery school Angel de la Guarda which remained closed until further notice. The town halls will keep people informed of school schedules as they are updated.
Dam Floods Town THOUSANDS of people had to be rescued when a dam burst in Murcia. The River Segura overflowed during the horrendous weather and all access to Almoradi was cut off this weekend with houses and farm land completely swamped with the excess water. The over flow of River Segura caused the Murcia dam to burst flooding the properties below. Emergency services sent out helicopters and boats to help those stranded and bring them to safety. The army were involved in the rescue mission to get over 2,000 people to safety.

One resident said: “After the recent bad weather we were worried he had been swept away, but when he returned we were overjoyed.� Given recent bad news, this little bit of happy news brought smiles to the faces of some who live near the Las Ramblas canal, Orihuela Costa.

A BRITISH expat in the Torrevieja area has had their phone hacked by a cyber thief. The woman recently purchased a Sim only Lebara card for her mobile android device, but the number she received had previously been owned by another person. The problems started when she received texts and calls meant for the original owner of the Spanish number. The messages received were addressed to a ‘Fillip’ with calls from debt collectors. The phone store said this was an issue to be raised with the telephone company. Before the Brit was able to contact the phone company she received a notification to tell her that her bank account had been frozen, the hacker who had her number had been able to access her emails, phone data and even her bank through the mobile device. She has since been able to get her bank account restored and a new number from the phone company. Credit: Steve Ralph
BOTH a man and the animals from a local animal sanctuary have been saved. The animals were on the first floor of the flooded sanctuary and unable to escape due to severe floods trapping both the animals and their owner inside. Jon the owner of Big Reds animal sanctuary refused to leave his animals behind and head for safety, instead he stayed behind to help care for his animals. Unfortunately some animals perished in the floods but he was able to get the majority of the dogs and other animals to the safety of the second floor. Through the help of locals all coming together he was able to get vital supplies such as blankets and food to both himself and the animals. On Sunday two men, Steve Ralph and Brian Moore, swam to the sanctuary, to save the remaining animals with a rubber dinghy, they were placed in cages and taken to safety, 12 dogs and three cats in total were rescued from the flooded sanctuary. He was air lifted from the building by a Guardia Civil helicopter.

Boy racer triumphs RACING prodigy George Cherry didn’t let the weather dampen his hopes of a top title. George, aged nine, took the title of Spanish Supercross Champion 2019 at the grand final in Valladolid last weekend. But the youngster’s hopes were almost stalled when his family was evacuated from their home in the early hours of the morning the day before the trail and bike parts ordered were not delivered in time. Then, with a six-hour drive ahead from his Costa Blanca home to Valadollid, his race van engine failed. Luckily, local Motocross Holiday business owner Darren Flaum of Fly and Ride Spain 365 stepped up to offer his van to get George and his bike there and back. And George managed to put it all behind him when he hit the track to win the coveted national title. Mum Kay Spencer was delighted by George’s success. She said: “Due to the terrible weather, bike parts could not be delivered on time, which made for a very nerve-wracking journey across the flooded roads of Murcia and Valencia.” The family arrived at midday and, with a 20point lead in the championship, George just had to finish in the top 10. The first race got off to a flying start, with George taking the holeshot and leading the pack round the first lap.
FLYING HIGH: George wins national title. Kay said: “Unfortunately, a small mistake in the whoops section let one rider pass, but George held on to finish the race in second place which meant for the final race he needed just one point. “After a good battle and a few scary moments, George finished the race in second place and was crowned Spanish Supercross Champion after winning four out of the six races in the Championship.”

SHELVES have been laid bare as food supplies dry up in supermarkets. The beginning of the week saw many residents throughout Orihuela, Murcia and Torrevieja without food. The shops had a massive shortage on items such as fish, meat, fruit and vegetables. With farm land all over the coast severely flooded and excessive damage to crops and farm produce, the large supermarkets were struggling to maintain their food supplies. Many shelves were bare and shoppers were left without vital supplies. Deliveries were unable to be made to top up the supermarkets due to a shortage from farms supplying the large chain stores. Mercadona in Torrevieja had run out of all fresh meat products, the majority of its

Toxic water WATER supplies have been restored but users are warned it is not fit to drink. A fault affecting the entrance pipe of the Mancomunidad de Canales del Taibilla has been repaired, so the supply of drinking water to Bigastro, Hurchillo and Arneva could be re-es-

For this reason, in some areas and supply points in these three municipalities, tap water may contain ‘matter’ and people are asked not to use the water for drinking or cooking until further notice.

Boris Johnson had nothing new to bring to the table other than his declared preference to be ‘dead in a ditch’ rather than extend the deadline. The Luxembourg meeting was the
‘Put career before country’ FORMER Prime Minister David Cameron has accused Boris Johnson of putting his political career before Britain’s best interests. In David Cameron’s forthcoming memoirs, he says Boris Johnson was never a fan of Brexit but jumped on the bandwagon for his own ends. David Cameron says he has no regrets about calling the referendum on Europe having been bound, he said, by a Tory manifesto pledge to do so. Mr Cameron campaigned for remain while Mr Johnson rallied the call to leave resulting in the then Prime Minister’s resignation when his side unexpectedly lost the vote. He says his former colleague was more worried about winning a popularity contest within his own party than taking the country in the right direction. In his memoirs, published in the Sunday Times, Mr Cameron writes: ‘Whichever senior Tory politician took the lead on the Brexit side - so loaded with images of patriotism, independence and romance - would become the darling of the party. ‘He [Mr Johnson] didn’t want to risk allowing someone else with a high profile - Michael Gove in particular - to win that crown. The conclusion I am left with is that he [Boris Johnson] risked an outcome he didn’t believe in because it would help his political career.’ He also criticises Mr Johnson for misleading voters with promises he could not follow through when he rode the Brexit bus with a banner claiming leaving would gain the NHS an extra £350m a week.

Now that the UK government has lost its majority, the support of the DUP is less relevant to Mr Johnson who could allow different rules for Northern Ireland to break the deadlock. Although the proposals have been likened in Brussels as last night’s takeaway with a sprinkling of fresh herbs. Mr Johnson wrote in Monday’s Daily Telegraph newspaper that he believes a deal is possible within three weeks.
Cancel Brexit LIBERAL Democrats have voted to reverse Brexit if they win the next General Election. The policy was confirmed at the party’s annual conference. Previously the party had campaigned for a second referendum and say they will continue to argue for a second vote before a General Election.

Farms flooded Garage Robbery A GARAGE has been broken into overnight in the Villamatin area. Tops Tyres of Villamartin, Alicante, was broken into overnight on more than one occasion last week, with thieves taking lap t o p s a n d t h e n a ttempting to break in to another garage on the same business park, GT Autos. The thieves did not manage to gain access into the second g a r a g e , b u t w e re able to steal diesel from generators. The second garage had a safety alarm that helped to deter the burglars, but that did not stop them from returning again to try to access the garage a second time. Safety measures have been put in place in the form of alarms and locks to help secure the garages from any more break-ins in the future.
Rained off SPORTS activities have been suspended in Orihuela. The council passed a ruling after technical staff recommended the suspension of activities and the closure of buildings for safety reasons. The Emergency Technician D Francisco Masip Andujar, said work was being done to restore facilities as soon as possible. It was hoped that most facilities would reopen on Friday. Police, emergency services and civil protection departments were informed of the ‘catastrophe’ ruling passed on Tuesday. Most schools had already been closed
MURCIA was one of the worst hit areas since the extreme floods of the Gota Fria and suffered floods to the farm lands and houses following the burst of the river Segura. Los Alazares has been hit hard by floods. Local politician, Fernando Lopez Miras: “There is a lot of work to do as to the material, but fortunately, we managed to get the population safe. The safety of the people has always been the priority.” The residents have all been taken to safety, but have had to leave belongings behind.

Second Break REPAIRS have been carried out on a collapsed wall that collapsed twice in Almoradi. The Politician of the Valencian Community, Ximo Puig, supervised the repair work on the wall where the break first began on the Segura River as it passes through Almoradi. It was originally repaired on Saturday, but waters broke through so the wall needed re-
pairing again on Sunday. The president, together with the Minister of Justice, Interior and Public Administration, Gabriela Bravo, later inspected the site. The towns of Rojales and Guardamar del Segura had been evacuated to first assess the damage caused by the rainstorm of the last week.
Traffic jam plan AN underpass is to be built under the National road N-332. The mayor of Finestrat, Miguel Llorca, and the first deputy mayor, Nadal Galiana, met with 50 businessmen and traders from the Industrial and Commercial Estate to present the project. Designed by the city council, it will facilitate access to and exit from the shopping centre and all shops around. The first deputy mayor, Nadal Galiana, said: “With this initiative we intend to regulate the intense traffic in the area. This project consists of enabling an underground access that will link what is known as sector 27 with sector 24 in which the commercial area is located.” Currently the area is accessed by a roundabout, where vehicles converge from Finestrat, Villajoyosa and Benidorm. The budget to build this underpass amounts to €2.4 million and is a “technically complex construction,” explained the first deputy mayor.

Money Raised TIMEOUT Sports Bar and Restaurant have raised €237 plus an additional donation of €25 donated by one of the runners up of the time out race. The money has been donated to the Los Alcazares flood disaster fund. The bar managed to get the funds raised after a tie out race on Saturday. Normally the race days raise money for Costa Blanca local charities. Given the current situation, the bar as well as Gary and Sue from Time Out team, decided that the funds would be greatly appreciated by the flood charity at this time. Joanne Scott delivered the funds to the charity adding: “It will definitely be well spent.”

Helpers clean up A GROUP of volunteers have been helping to clean Los Alcazares following the devastation caused by floods.
Roads have been destroyed, plantations uprooted, homes demolished and even lives lost, but this group of selfless people decided
to group together to help clean up the streets, brushing pavements, picking up rubbish and cleaning vehicles for many hours.
Citizen Collaboration ALL the groups which make up the Diputación de Alicante (Alicante government), Partido Popular, Ciudadanos, PSOE and Compromís have agreed to inform the citizens of the different channels of solidarity and humanitarian aid put in place to alleviate the numerous damages suffered by the torrential rain which has flooded the Vega Baja. In coordination with the Red Cross, an association that is part of the CECOPAL emergency device located in Orihuela, together with other local and regional administrations and the Alicante Provincial itself, several support channels have been enabled by companies and individuals. The donations can be both economic and material, with food or supplies of various kinds. The objective is to organise all the aid through a joint way to effectively, quickly and orderly manage the contributions of society. tribute to the Costa Blanca. The non-profit organisation B Lab, based in Pennsylvania, is behind the ‘B Corporation’ kitemark which it gives only to firms making a concerted social and environmental e ff o r t a s a n i n t e g r a l p a r t of their business activities. Of those which belong to the movement, 10 per cent per year are given prizes when their corporate social responsibility efforts are considered outstanding and go above and beyond B Lab’s minimum requirements. B Corp firms undergo rigorous evaluation in five a r e a s : c o m m u n i t y, e m ployee well-being, environment, leadership and customer service. The top 10 per cent which score the highest across the board are given awards. Around 70,000 compa-
nies use the Evaluation of Impact B (EIB) to rate firms in the five key categories. In Spain, 14 companies achieved a record score for their respective industries this year and serve as an example for other firms seeking to create a positive impact on society and the planet. IT wasn’t just humans that needed a help during the downpours. Emergency services helping people during the storms were also out to help the animals that had suffered too. Local heroes took to the streets to save animals caught up in the storm and bring them to safety, including dogs and cats caught outside when the storms hit. This group of men from Murcia managed to save a number of animals taking them to shelters that were working hard to provide for the injured animals, including one drowning dog caught up in the rushing waters caused by the horrific Gota Fria floods.

CLIMATE campaigners are calling for crisis status for communities they say face environmental disaster. The green party Los Verdes of Torrevieja want the town declared as officially in climate emergency. Los Verdes submitted a
Climate Strike motion for the declaration of the state of climate emergency in Torrevieja. In addition, Los Verdes will support the climate strikes on
September 27 that are being prepared worldwide led by trade union and ecology organisations. The declaration demands that measures be taken to stop the actions that provoke climate change, affecting the reduction of greenhouse gases.
They want a reduction in consumption of renewable energies, improved sustainable mobility, pedestrian spaces, promotion of bicycle use and a zero-waste policy. They say scientific data confirms the existence of global warming caused by
human action as well as manifesting in extreme weather phenomena that are increasingly frequent in our environment. In addition, the local council has asked to commit to the importance of taking effective measures that involve all citi-
zens in the protection of our planet. The declaration of the state of climate emergency in Torrevieja creates a precedent that forces this institution to take courageous action before we reach a point of no return. More than 670 governments in 15 countries have already declared climate emergencies and say society must change.
Dog found A BLACK dog has been found looking l o s t a n d w i t h o u t f o o d i n t h e Vi l l a martin area. Residents have taken her in after finding her shivering and cowering on a local’s patio. Jane Woodcraft of Villamartin said she had taken her in after she was found “wet and terrified.” Jane is looking for her owners so she can reunite them both. The dog is currently being fed and kept warm. She is timid and shy, but safe until her owners come to collect her. Jane has said that she is happy to rehabilitate the dog if the owners are not found. She was found without a micro chip but was wearing a collar.

Campsite evacuation A SECOND evacuation had been put in place due to threat of flooding. Marjal camping site in Crevillente, close to the Catral border had been evacuated by the Guardia Civil in the early hours of Sunday morning. Around 1,500 people were forced to leave their properties to escape the potential flooding predicted for the area. Guardia Civil took the residents in lorries away to a location safe from flooding. The residents were advised to pack a bag of essential items and prepare for evacuation. This raised the initial evacuation figures to over 4,000. One resident said she is “devastated, after thinking it was all over, then this happens.� The weather had calmed down, however the rise of the water continues due to the break in local rivers and dams causing water to continue to flood surrounding areas. The area of Formentera Segura had previously experienced flooding due to the rise in water.

Brits trapped after flash floods A BRITISH family holidaying in Orihuela were trapped for 12 hours during the storms that hit Costa Blanca. Paul and Angie Spencer from Doncaster, England were staying in Benferri, near Orihuela, with their four children aged 12 months, two, 12 and 14, when the Brazel del Lugar river suddenly burst its banks on Friday morning. Their holiday home windows were reportedly smashed with the force of the floodwater in Benfis Park urbanisation, cutting electricity supplies. Paul told the press the whole experience was terrifying, explaining that within half an hour
their basement was completely flooded. Paul Spencer, 35 said he knew they were in trouble when the waters rose higher than the kerbs. He said the family “had fun watching the thunder and lightning on Thursday night, but never in a million years did we think our holiday villa would be nearly swept away the next day.” Paul had sent a video to family and friends in the UK showing the raging storm waters filling their hire car and filling up the staircase of their three-storey detached building. After the electricity supply was cut the family heard nothing until the military arrived at 5pm the following day, eight hours
after their ordeal began. The military then evacuated the family to Benferri’s community centre. During the journey to the centre, “cars were streaming past, along with furniture, suitcases and even two people who tried to cross the road.” Paul said the two people ‘just got swept away’ and he didn’t what what happened to them. When the family of eight finally arrived at Auditori Municipal in Benferri, they were met by just four beds for the group. Fortunately the Spencer family and their two friends were able to get last-minute flights out from Alicante-Elche airport on Friday night and escape the ‘horrendous conditions.’

CHEFS have made a meal out of fundraising for a local charity. Friends and family came together for a BBQ cooked by Joey and Jim, Chefs from TJ’s restaurant in Benijofar to raise funds for the Huntington’s Disease Association Costa Blanca. After enjoying the delicious food, people danced to live music played by Barry Young. Towards the end of the evening some guests joined in for karaoke. President Marion Smith praised the generosity of all those attending, and in particular Joey, Jim and Barry for providing their time free of charge, and all volunteers helping on the day. Ticket sales and the raffle raised a magnificent €523. She said: “Without this support we would not be able to provide the much-needed support for people with Huntington’s Disease and their carers. The enthusiastic and continuing support of local people is greatly appreciated.” The next Huntington’s Disease Association event is a hot and cold buffet/dance on NovemWOMEN are invited to get in the scrum for the rugby season. The new season with Ferrmur Federacion de Rugby starts this September offering an opportunity for women interested in joining the ladies’ rugby team in

Dad scared for children EXPAT Grant Steele, 54, was awoken at 5am Friday morning having put his 10-year-old twins to bed at 11.30pm the previous night. The Aberdeenshire man was woken as torrential rains hit the Costa Blanca and sent floodwaters up to 4ft-deep rushing through his home in Dolores. Grant explains: “There was absolutely no flood warning on Thursday night, but I was shocked awake by this unholy racket as a maelstrom of lightning and rain hit our house in the campo.” He continued: “My palm trees were going sideways at right angles and our garden was four feet deep in floodwater.” The storm created a flash flood that completely covered his ground floor. “I waded out to our van with only my phone on me. I left everything behind including my wallet,” he said, adding: “The electric gate wouldn’t budge un-

But we’re in the middle of a flood plain. Steele has sought refuge at another friend’s house with the children, while wife Catherine is still in the UK.
Furniture contribution A KIND-HEARTED Essex couple are appealing to members of the public who have unwanted furniture to help flood victims in their area. Darren and Kelly Chambers who run Sidney’s Discount Furniture Warehouse, just outside San Miguel, are willing to donate their own stock and distribute other furniture that may be donated to people that find themselves in need. The couple explained: “All we want to do is help people by giving away our own furniture and collect donated furniture to take to those without.”

Gender advice FAMILIES confused about gender issues are being offered council support. Valencia Council has recruited some of the best-known groups in the region specialising in matters concerning gays, lesbians, transsexuals, bisexuals and intersexuals. The programme, named Orienta, is a pioneering initiative in the Valencian community and one of the few public services of this type in the country. Its function is to inform and guide members of the LGBTI community and their friends and families who need help in matters of gender identity and sexual orientation, as well as psychological, social, legal,
administrative or health support. “We help people from trans people who are starting the process, to people who have s u ff e r e d a g g r e s s i o n s o r a n y o t h e r h a t e crime,” says the director of the service, Victor Sanchez. Although it has been active since July 1, the official launch of the programme will take place in September. The service is staffed by seven professionals with different profiles, most of them graduates from LGTBI activism networks and social work.

Triple killing arrest A MAN has been arrested in Spain for allegedly killing his ex-partner, his ex-mother-in-law and his ex-brother-inlaw in the Pontevedra town of Valga. Police report that the man allegedly committed the triple killing in the town’s district of Carracido, in the parish of Cordeiro, before returning home to A Coruña. He then reportedly turned himself in to the Guardia Civil and allegedly confessed to the crimes. The events took place in the early hours of Monday morning. The Guardia Civil has taken charge of the investigation, of which no more details have yet been released.

Making an insurance claim after the storms THE storms which wreaked havoc across Valencia, Alicante, Murcia and Almería last week were amongst the most severe we have witnessed in recent years and left a trail of destruction and sadly loss of life across the region. If your home or vehicle is insured and has been damaged during these storms then you will want to make a claim. Your first call will be to your insurer or the broker or agent who sold you the policy. When you give them details of the damage and how it was caused you may well be advised that this is covered by the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros and not your insurance company. So, what is the Consorcio and how does it work? The Consorcio is a public insurance company created by the Spanish gov-
ernment in 1941. It has many functions but the key one in this case is coverage of extraordinary risks to persons and property. Contracting an insurance policy with a private insurer in Spain carries with it separate coverage against extraordinary risks, the coverage extending to the same property and people covered by that policy and for the same amounts. The natural risks covered are earthquakes, tidal waves or tsunamis, floods, volcanic eruptions, wind storms (tornadoes and winds gusting to more than 120km/h) and falling objects and meteorites. Flood is the risk that accounts for most of the claims in Spain. Flood is defined as an inundation of land due to the accumulation or runoff of rainwater, meltwater or waters from lakes, rivers or inlets through overflow of their natural beds or channels. It also covers dam-
age caused by coastal battering. Damage produced by rain falling directly on the insured property or collected by its roof or cover, drainage system or patios is not covered by the Consorcio. Water from dams, canals, sewers, collectors and other man-made underground channels is also not covered unless these are ruptured by an extraordinary event covered by the Consorcio. A useful rule of thumb is that if the rain water comes through your roof it is not covered by the Consorcio, but if the rain water comes through your door it is. Appraisal of the damage is carried out by claims assessors appointed by the Consorcio. The Consorcio is funded by a compulsory surcharge on the policy premiums on several lines of insurance including home and vehicle insurance. Private insurers collect this surcharge alongside the policy pre-

AGREEMENT: A partnership to adapt navy ships between Spain and Saudi has sparked some criticism.
$991 million defence deal SPANISH shipbuilder, Navantia, and the Saudi Arabian Military Industries (SAMI) have signed a $991 million dollar defence deal. The partnership was announced at the Defence and Security Equipment international 2019 Exhibition in London. The deal is to adapt Navantia’s combat management systems for Saudi navy
corvette ships and is thought to be part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s modernisation programme called ‘Vision 2030.’ The joint venture between SAMI and Navantia has attracted some criticism after a UN report has openly criticised the Saudi-led intervention in Yemen and the supply of arms by countries such as the UK, the US, and France who have been accused of being complicit in ‘war crimes.’

Counterfeit brandy scam A SPANISH brandy firm with a base in the country of Georgia is being investigated after i t w a s d i s c o v e re d that it had potentially shipped up to four million l i t r e s o f c o u n t e rfeit brandy across Europe. The Altosa Group, who own the Georgian distillery, are currently under investigation after i t e m e rg e d t h a t t h e brandy they were importing to fellow EU countries such as France and Spain was a type of c o r n b r a n d y, a m u c h cheaper alternative to the EU regulated wine brandy. The scheme was det e c t e d a f t e r G e o rg i a ’s strict export practices led to the realisation that four million litres had left the country without proper certification. Georgian Wine, used in the manufacture of the brandy, holds huge national economic importance to the country and because of such; the
National Wine Agency was born. The director of the Agency, Levan Mekhuzla, explained, “At the agency we grant certificates to all companies that want to export wine and pass controls, and without these certificates it is forbidden to export. “After compiling our end of year analysis, we found that four million litres of alcohol had left the country without a certificate. And they all belonged to Iberica S p i r i t s , t h e G e o rg i a n company owned by the Spanish winery Altosa.” Authorities have confirmed that multiple forged documents across a number of countries have led to the false export of the counterfeit b r a n d y, a f a c t t h a t t h e CEO of Altosa, Pedro José López Montero, firmly denies. In an interview with the media last July, he pointed the finger at Georgian business partner Solomon Akhalkatsi. The investigation continues.

Balkan criminal gang S PA N I S H p o l i c e h a v e l e d a Joint Action Day involving 30 countries targeting Balkan criminal gangs. The Joint Action Day (JAD) Western Balkans 2019 involved 6,758 law enforcement officers from 30 countries. Their priorities were tackling firearms trafficking, illegal immigration, document fraud and drugs trafficking. T h e p re p a r a t o r y p h a s e b e g a n i n early 2019 with several operational meetings and intelligence-gathering activities, as well as controls at selected border control points. T h e E M PA C T F i re a r m s w o r k i n g group - led by Spain, coordinated the operation. Europol coordinated the deployment of mobile offices to analyse information on-the-spot. From September 5 to 8 a coordination centre was set up at Europol’s headquarters in The Hague to support the exchange of intelligence among the participants. Frontex tackled cross-border crime at the EU external borders and contributed to the operation by performing intensified controls at selected
b o r d e r c ro s s i n g p o i n t s a n d b o r d e r surveillance activities as part of its ongoing field activities in the region. In total, 214,147 people, vehicles, a n d p re m i s e s w e re c h e c k e d d u r i n g the operation in the fight against crime originating from the Western Balkans. Police made 175 arrests (26 arrests in the intelligence phase and 149 in the operational phase). Due to the heightened police scrutiny a total of 329 people were refused entry at external borders, 164 clandestine entries were uncovered, 111 overstayers reported, 14 visa fraud or misuse cases found. Seventy-one instances of forged or falsified docum e n t s w e re d i s c o v e re d , a n d 5 1 firearms with 895 pieces of ammunition were seized. Organ donation Living in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. As of 2010, Spain has operated an ‘opt-out’ (or presumed consent) system for deceased organ donation. This addresses the rate or refusal of potential donors or their families in giving permission for the use of organs. The rate of family refusal in Spain is 13 per cent, compared to 37 per cent in England (according to the National Transplant Organisation figures - ONT). According to the ONT, Brits living in Spain are more likely to donate their organs than their countrymen back home. It’s not necessary to have a donor card. What is important is to let family members and loved ones know your wishes in terms of organ donation. Figures published by the Spanish ONT in 2017 put the country as world leader in donation and transplants, reaching a new record with 46.9 donors per million people and 5.261 transplants. Spain has been a global leader in organ donation and transplantation for the past 26 years. Broken down by organ, there were 3,269 kidney surgeries (up 9 per cent on 2016), 1,247 liver transplants (up 8 per cent), 304 heart procedures (8 per cent rise), 363 lung surgeries (up 18 per cent), 70 pancreas transplants (down 4 per cent) and eight bowel surgical procedures (up 100 per cent). According to the National Transplant Organisation (ONT), these surgeries are equivalent to six donors and 14 surgical procedures a day. In addition, Spain saw a new record in bone marrow donation last year, with 78,291 new donors and an increase of 196 per cent over the previous year. At this rate, the country could reach its target of 400,000 bone marrow donors well before the mid-2020 goal. In Spain the number of those on the waiting list was reduced to 4,896 in 2017, from 5,480, although the number of children waiting for organs increased to 74, from 48 a year earlier. Lung and heart are viable for 4-6 hours after death, liver and pancreas 24 hours, kidney 72 hours, corneas 14 days, bone and skin five years, and heart valves up to 10 years. Small intestines, veins, tendons and ligaments can also be donated. A single organ donor can save up to eight people and a single tissue donor may enhance the lives of up to 50 people. Rubbish cleared ONE of the many problems affecting Benijofar and the surrounding area was the fact that due to the floods, rubbish collection lorries were unable to leave their depots.
This led to many of the public bins overflowing and the council was forced to request residents not to add to the mess by taking any additional rubbish for disposal. Late last Sunday howe v e r, t h e c o l l e c t i o n o f
rubbish was resumed and although there has been a considerable backlog of work for the refuse men, by the end of this week (provided that the weather remains stable) all refuse should be cleared and collections back to normal in all areas.
Food deliveries ANOTHER problem caused by the flooding has been the availability of fresh food as delivery vehicles have found certain roads either closed or impassable which means that supermarkets in particular have found themselves running out of stock. This hasn’t happened everywhere, but social media has shown images of empty
shelves even though many people couldn’t make it to the supermarkets themselves. Happily, those who were able to remain in their properties often had stocks of food and water and now delivery vehicles are getting through again so the problem will be resolved.
NATURAL DISASTER: Flood waters are subsiding.
A pearl to cherish WHILST many small towns in Costa Blanca have been devastated by the floods, Benijofar has fared a little better and has been involved in assisting its neighbours, especially nearby Rojales. Like so many towns in the area, this little settlement can thank the Moorish occupation for its name which when translated from Arabic means Son of a Pearl and to a great extent it is an accurate description of the
town which boasts a registered population of around 4,000 people. It can trace its roots back to the Bronze Age as a small village near to the Rio Segura which subsequently benefited from Roman ingenuity, allowing for the introduction of irrigation canals, water wheels and locks. By the 16th century it was considered to be part of Orihuela, but later obtained a significant element of self-government thanks to a now obscure
law the ‘privilegio alfonsino’ which made it an independent municipality in the heart of Alicante Province. From then on it remained an agricultural community and to the present day, there are still a number of farms and estates all dedicated to the production of fruit and vegetables. Over the years, it has seen its fair share of natural disasters with a devastating earthquake in 1829 which destroyed a number of houses and the local parish church, but like many towns in the area, it was rebuilt by José Larramendi and Eugene Fourdinier. The town grew in prosperity, using water from the Segura to irrigate the land although it suffered a number of floods over the centuries, the worst of these natural disasters being in 1957, when the river burst its banks, almost destroying Benijofar and killing a number of local people. This latest problem, whilst worrying and financially damaging for many was not the true disaster for the town that it might have been and there is every expectation that things will return to normal in Benijofar over the coming weeks as residents not only count their blessings, but show solidarity with and offer help to neighbouring towns which suffered far more.

The current incumbents argue that there is a real need for such a residence which would also be used as a family meeting point and reception centre for minors. INDUSTRIAL output jumped 2.9 per cent in July com pared to the same month in 2018. The rise was driven by energy and consumer goods according to the National Statistics Institute (INE). The general industrial production index has been volatile in recent months, with falls in April (2 per cent) and June (1.9 per cent) and rises in May (1.6 per cent) and July (2.9 per cent). Energy industry out put rose 8.3 per cent and consumer goods 5 per cent.

Brexit warning letters
MORE than 90,000 warning letters have been sent to businesses who export to the UK by Spain’s tax authorities. They are advising recipients of the adverse effects of a nodeal Brexit and recommending that precautions are taken to mitigate against the ef fects of such an event. Amongst the factors listed in the letters are the new customs, tax and healthrelated rules that businesses will have to follow to trade with the UK if there is no deal. And red tape is set to increase hugely, with each shipment requiring a customs form, going through cus toms controls plus the payment of tariffs and other duties. Meetings between tax officials and business associations, companies and customs specialists have been held to discuss the trade and borderrelated problems related to Brexit.
The Spanish government has put contingency plans into place, and the Finance Ministry, which is largely re sponsible for the customs service, has been planning for a no deal scenario for months. Air and sea ports have been as signed more resources to deal with the extra workload expected. While the customs paperwork is not expect ed to be a major problem the need to meet new regulations not just for food and animals, but also medicines and chemical products is a big con cern.

Seat to China
THE Seat and Cupra bands are set to expand into China and Chile. CEO of Cupra and Seat’s commer cial vice president, Wayne Griffiths, says that the former is preparing to start selling in China, while the lat ter will enter the Chilean market in the next few months. Griffiths stressed that Seat must have a more diversified geographic presence and grow beyond Europe. “We’re doing it in North Africa, we’re starting our development in Latin America and we’re preparing to reach China in two or three years,” he said.

Replying to criticism from the President of the PP, Pablo Casado, who pointed out that ‘inertia is over’ and asked him to ‘fix Spain,’ Sanchez said: “For your peace of mind, Mr Casado, the deficit is under con
trol. At the end of 2019 it will be 2 per cent of GDP, a reduction of 0.5 points compared to 2018. We must be doing something right.” Sanchez has recognised a cooling of the econo my, blaming ‘trade tensions’ and the adoption of protectionist policies by countries like the United States. But he referred to estimates from the Euro pean Commission and said that “Spain will continue to grow and lead” the European economy.

Nuclear fall out

ENRESA, the stateowned company in charge of scrapping Spain’s remaining nuclear power stations does not have enough money. Now the government must decide whether the extra bill is paid only by the electricity companies or al so by the user. Endesa, Iberdrola, Natur gy and EDP, the companies that own the plants will have to face an extra bill of just over €4 billion for the power stations’ scrapping. In addition, users should al so contribute, via their electricity bills, an addition al billion. This is according to the latest report of Enresa, pub lished just a few days ago, which sets the cost of the complete dismantling of nu

Cash injection by Iberdrola SPANISH electricity company Iberdola is using cash from the 40 per cent sale of its East Anglia wind farm to increase the capital of subsidiary Scottish Power by £1.36 billion (€1.523 billion) to safeguard it against Brexit.
Loans ruling clear power plants at an in flation adjusted total of €14.113 billion in a process that will last until 2070. In addition to scrapping, other costs would have to be borne. Bankia trial extended A TRIAL investigating alleged irregularities in Bankia’s initial share offering (IPO) in July 2011 has been extended for another week. It is now scheduled to end on Wednesday, September 25, more than 10 months after oral evidence started to be heard. The Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office began its final presentation on September 2. It raised from four to 15 the total number of people for whom it is asking for a conviction by including the crime of false accounting, which it added to
previous charges of swindling investors. Now investors’ group 15MPaRato is asking for the conviction of 21 individuals, while consumers’ group Adicae has maintained its accusation against 34 people. Ignacio Ayala, the lawyer of former Bankia president Rodrigo Rato, has blamed the Bankia case on an “unlucky accident,” saying “everything was done with the best intention.” In 2016 the Supreme Court ordered Bankia to repay small investors as the IPO was misleading.
THE Supreme Court has ruled that people cannot be evicted from their homes until they have a debt equivalent to 12 months payments or 3 per cent of the capital loaned in a case about unfair mortgage terms.
Block bond BANCO SANTANDER is issuing a $20 million (€18 million) bond using ‘blockchain’ technology, with financial director José García Cantera, saying the technology will be faster and make the bond more transparent for its clients.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT ONE thing I have learned over the years is that you should always be prepared to admit being in the wrong. Seeing an antagonist’s aggressive expression change when you quickly accept the blame can be quite rewarding. Often they can think of nothing to say at all and their whole confrontational attitude crumbles into an embarrassed mumble. Well, today I can quite happily admit to be ing in the wrong. I did set out this week to pour scorn on the latest snowflake scheme to introduce programmes which would ad dress the transgender needs of animals! Under ‘you couldn’t make it up’ I was preparing to cite two women, who recently appeared on television advocating plans to respect and assist transgender penguins and sexually confused dogs! Before I began the piece I decided to do a little research. To my surprise, I subsequently discov ered that this whole scenario has in fact been studied in some depth and there are actually quite a number of species who have shown examples of transgender and homo sexual leanings. TRANSGENDER PENGUINS: A reflection of our diverse planet? to hump just about anything that stays still long enough but a whole selection of the animal king dom on this diverse planet of ours. One which I found most endearing was a magnificent beast called Mmamoriri. Sporting an impressive mane, Mmamoriri is a Lion/ess living with a pride in the Okavango Delta Botswana. Looking for all the world like a
large male, the animal actually has the sex or gans of a female. She is a beautiful specimen and appears to live in complete harmony with the rest of the group. She is in fact an asset, as the more males appear in a pride the larg er the territory they can control. So, although I admit to being on com pletely the wrong track in this instance, I still rather fail to see why animals in these cir
cumstances need any ‘help.’They actually seem to be coping perfectly well on their own. Perhaps it’s the complete acceptance of those around them. Something to be learned there perhaps? Not sure I’d want to get close enough to Mmamoriri to offer any counselling anyway. Oh and by the way, she actually has a deep er roar than the all other pride males. Very butch dear! Totally enjoyed my ‘live’ appearance on the EWN Facebook page this week. Sorry for the slight technical difficulties. Mind you it was Friday 13 and Mallorca was in the throes of an approaching tornado. (Leapy’s law!) Perhaps if there is a next time it will be a little more trouble free. THIS summer, an exam board was forced to defend a GCSE maths question involving calorie counting after being criticised on social media for causing distress to pupils with eating disorders. Another because an excerpt from an unseen text was taken from a classic book involving rape though the passage in question made no reference to the rape. Is it April 1 again, already? Can this be serious? Are children to be so protected that they can’t be presented with innocu ous reallife scenarios? Neither anorexia nor rape should be treated lightly, but encouraging young people to collapse in a heap at a mere hint of life’s unpleasantness is absurdly counterproductive. But nowadays every thing upsets somebody apparently. Next we’ll be told they can’t answer questions about the witch craze in history in case it upsets Wiccans. Or Dick Turpin
OVER SENSITIVE: Can students no longer be presented with innocuous reallife scenarios? because of the evident masculine focus of his name and the fact he was a highway man and not a highwayperson. Chem istry: no noble gases, because that’s elitist. Presumably, too, we’ll ban history, as it’s about wars and dead people; Geogra phy as it might mention tsunamis and people drowning; Maths as it tells you that you can’t calculate the last digit of pi. It’s almost the same as the university stu dents studying biology etc who demand trigger warnings if part of the course in volves seeing dead bodies. I’m sure most would have no problem. It’s only the at tention seekers who make a fuss. If they’re that sensitive, why apply to study subjects like biology? When will it all end? And to think that, 75 years ago, ‘kids’ of around the same age were storming
beaches in northern France under heavy artillery to liberate Europe from Nazi rule. Could there be another ‘story’ that more starkly illustrates the total antithesis be tween those brave souls and the inverte brates of today? Perhaps newspapers should place a trigger warning above these ‘offended’ / ‘feeling hurt’ stories. Maybe something like: ‘Warning! The following is unsuitable for older readers. Into September, fingers crossed
By Barbara Belt barbarabelt@gmail.com AUGUST’S wildfire in Gran Canaria, with 10,000 evacuated, destroyed 9,200 hectares of protected natural space, homes, livings, livestock, ways of life. It could happen again. We’re very vulnerable. Experts and politicians are meeting (and lunching) now to produce the final cost figure, without which no disaster is complete. New Canarian president, Ángel Víctor Torres, said: “It’s too early to be exact, but it’ll be millions.” The relevance of these damage assessments is questionable, given the limited comparisons they invite, like ‘fire x was worse than y.’ What’s dangerous (though safer ground for politicians) is that these interpretations distract attention from more important issues. Can money anyway reboot lost communities? Doubtful, especially for those which were horribly aware that, with no help to clear tinder around their villages, they’d burn. Requests for help fell on deaf ears. They burnt. But the big, really important, never asked question, is: ‘How much would it have cost to avoid

What happened in the fire on La Gomera? Me: Dreadful... I thought of you often, the firemen and plane and helicopter pilots were heroes...The problems came at night... You know... Everybody has to pull out when it gets dark... the wind changes...the fire picks up. Mike: What? Pull out at night? Why? Me: Erm, well... you can’t fly at night...
can you? Mike: Whaaaat? You’re kidding? Only by day? No way! No NVT? Me (shocked): No! What’s NVT? Mike: Night vision technology. Me: Is it new? Mike: Naah, the infra-red’s old. We’ve had it since the 70’s, fitted into old Huey choppers from the Vietnam war. There’s a bunch of newer stuff too. So there it is. Californian firefighters have special night
flying equipment, but ours don’t. NVT of course exists in Europe, but is mostly used by airforces to hit targets and kill people more efficiently in the dark, while firefighters exhaust themselves all day fighting fires, then night comes and the fire’s left to do its worst. A kind of one step forward, two back cha cha. To get things in perspective, we don’t even have a single hydroplane based in the Canaries, let alone one with NVT, although a fleet of 20 F18 Hornet fighter planes is based at Gando, should we feel a sudden desire for war. A www.change.org petition for a permanent hydroplane and helicopter base quickly attracted a quarter of a million signatures, unsurprisingly. Fires are an exponentially increasing risk, everywhere. Even the Artic’s burning. Why are we ostriching reality and not tooling up for the obvious? A bigger Gran Canaria fire in 2007 (19,000 hectares burnt, 20,000 animals killed, 400 homes lost) ‘cost’ €80 million. Demands then for hydroplanes or helicopters were brushed aside in favour of spending €127 million on a new transport system for capital La Palmas, Metroguagua. The money could have bought 5 CL215T Canadas hydroplanes at €26 million each, on hand to fight this summer’s fire immediately.

Built as a family yacht for pleasure but with an eye to the charter mar ket where the Superyacht SOLANGE commands a fee that starts at €1 mil lion per week. At 85.1 metres length overall and a beam of 13.8 metres the yacht has extraordinary volume. Interior designer Aileen Rodriquez remarked when the yacht was deliv ered: “The unique mix of rare and striking materials gives the yacht its ultimate look and luxurious style.” The main entrance is dominated by the Tree of Life, a glass sculpture rising some 16 metres from the tank deck to the bridge deck, though the staircase winding round the lighted glass column where more than 1,200 points of light suggest tropical rain and coloured glass flowers bloom. Toys and entertainments; a cine ma is almost expected on a supery acht and so yes it’s no surprise to find one. However, the cinema is re ally luxurious, so is the fabulous day head conveniently close to it. Spread across the six vast decks there is also
a removable sundeck dance floor with a console for a DJ and disco, lights and all. A hot tub or jacuzzi is also expected and SOLANDGE has two hot tubs and, to top it all, a six metre pool on the bridge deck aft equipped with a jet stream to swim against. Besides which is a chro matherapy spa with hammam and massage room.
There is a galley tasked to create culinary delights, there are numerous deck spaces close by and open to the sea, which bring guests into more inti mate contact with the elements. SOLANDGE sleeps 12 guests in seven staterooms including a master deck featuring 180 degree windows and private deck with a spa pool. While each of the cabins has its own unique colour scheme the deco ration of each room reflects the opu lence found throughout SOLANDGE. Handmade Italian furniture and high ly intricate stonework, mother of pearl inlays ensures that everyone on board is able to sleep in absolute luxury. Waking or sleeping, at rest or at play, 29 crew ensure that every care is taken of up to 12 guests whether at sea, in shore at anchor or calling at marinas around the Mediterranean. B12 deficiency - are you missing the signs? VITAMIN B12 is an essential nutrient that the human body requires to function properly. Vitamin B12 defi ciency symptoms may include: • Strange sensations, numb ness, or tingling in the hands, legs, or feet • Difficulty walking (stagger ing, balance problems) • Anaemia • A swollen, inflamed tongue • Difficulty thinking and rea soning (cognitive difficulties), or memory loss • Weakness • Fatigue While an experienced physi cian may notice the symptoms and be able to detect a vitamin B12 deficiency with a good in terview and physical examina tion, a blood test is needed to
confirm the condition. As vitamin B12 is primarily found in animal based foods (meat, milk, eggs, fish and cheese) so if you are a vegetari an or a vegan, you could develop a deficiency. More commonly though, deficiency is nondiet re lated. It is found in older people, those with digestive illnesses (like Crohn’s or coeliac disease) and autoimmune diseases like pernicious anaemia. Early detec tion and treatment are impor tant. If left untreated, the defi ciency can cause severe neurological symptoms. Treatment of B12 deficiency is usually injections every month (of Cyanocobalamin in Spain) or every three months (of Hydroxo cobalamin in the UK).

A WORD of warning to anybody who rings the 11840 number for information about trains. Don’t! I am planning to travel from Xativa (Valencia) to Alicante later this week but then the Gota Fria arrived, affecting trains in Murcia. Murcia comes into it because the train I usu ally take finishes there and so does the train I re turn on. After repeatedly being put on hold by Renfe’s 912 320 320helpline I decided to ring the 11840 number I found in Google and appeared to be an alternative Renfe helpline. I’ve no idea if it is, but it costs €3 a minute al though being in a hurry I thought it would be worth it. It wasn’t: I got through to an operator with a strong South American accent who had never heard of Xativa and when she finally got the message said as far as she could see all was well. Even I knew that was wrong and told her so. I tried the Renfe number again and this time waited and waited. And waited. It was worth it and cost me nothing be cause the operator told me the time of the only train to Alicante that evening. It took time, but at least it cost me nothing. Name and address supplied

I did not know that the EU had been financ ing the mass movement of industries from the UK to mainland Europe. POOR old Spain. A long hot summer has just finished. With the sunny dry weather came a seemingly non-stop string of forest fires. As tens of thousands of hectares burned and thousands of people were evacuated, people affected could be forgiven for wishing for a touch of rain and cooler weather. What they got however, was much more than they would have wanted. The so-called ‘Gota Fria’ or ‘cold drop’ came rolling in across swathes of eastern Spain. Once more thousands of people had to be evacuated as rivers burst their banks, people were trapped on rooftops and some 300,000 hectares of citrus and other crops destroyed. While the fires that raged across Spain brought destruction, worry and distress, at least there was the sense that something could be done against them. The thousands of firefighters and military personnel mobilised had great success in protecting life and property with, in the end, relatively few people directly affected by the flames. But there was no escaping the Gota Fria - the worst in 140 years. Those same emergency services now had a different task. But what they could do was limited. They could help with the evacuations and with the clean-up afterwards, but there was precious little they could do to hold the waters back. Even then, there is little doubt that without their efforts there could have been significant loss of life. So thank you to the emergency services from all of us. Yet again, we owe you.

However the Italian marque are not resting on their laurels with the launch of a new member to the 500 family. As the larger, family friendly 500X turns five this year, and with a slew of rivals biting at its heels, Fiat has brought to the table a sportier and more aggressive Sport version of the popular compact. Whilst stopping short of an allout performance car like the Abarth range, they have however gone fur ther than just adding new stockers and a higher price. The new model comes with either a 118bhp 1.0litre threecylinder or 148bhp 1.3litre fourcylinder petrol engine, the latter offered exclusively with a sixspeed dualclutch automatic gearbox with paddle shifters. Torque figures sit at 199lb ft from 1850rpm, which gives the car an excit ing mid range whilst the adapted steering and the feather like throttle response all add to the car’s sporty feel. Interior spec is what you would ex pect from a modern compact, a sev eninch infotainment screen gives all the usual functions and is Apple Play and Android Auto compatible. Ambient lighting, keyless entry and trim options are available options to add to the appeal of the new sporty model. Prices start at £16,235 for the 1.0 litre version, climbing to £24,700 for the 1.3 range topper.
Free in car entertainment coming to an end? FREE in car entertainment system software such as Apple’s CarPlay is being slowly phased out as free registration periods are coming to an end. Software such as CarPlay and Android’s Auto system has be come commonplace in modern day vehicles. The systems allow the user to connect their mobile phones to the car’s entertain ment system, providing a full in teractive service inside the car. Drivers of the newer models that contain the software are now seeing messages on their information panels stating ‘Your free trial of Apple CarPlay is up. Would you like to renew? Please pay £85 for another year.’ It is all part of a scheme by automotive makers to start to charge for the use of programs such as Apple CarPlay, instead of including them into the car’s package. It is being called ‘Features over the Air’ and is a new pro
ject which allows the user to re motely download upgrades for the software by paying a yearly subscription, similar to software companies such as Adobe. The issue facing car manufac turers is that the software is not free to purchase. Every manu facturer must pay between £45 to £90 per vehicle to include it in the car specifications. When you calculate that over the millions of cars produced the costs can be a major hit to the manufacturer’s profits. The first manufacturer to in clude the new renewal program is BMW. Since the German marque launched the latest OS7 soft ware in their IDrive entertain ment system, users are now be ing greeted with renewal messages, giving them the op tion to continue to use the tech nology for a fee. Mercedes Benz are also start ing to charge users for their new MBUX system via the Mercedes ME store. Mercedes charge a oneoff payment of £267.
Rival German manufacturer Audi appear to still include both the Apple and Android software on their latest ETron SUV but on future models, Audi has an nounced that cheaper versions will be subject to aftermarket upgrades. Tesla has been doing a ver sion of these chargeable up grades for a number of years, by using a portable wifi system in the vehicles to enable on the fly upgrades and even giving users the ability to watch Netflix whilst the vehicle is charging. Other manufacturers such as Land Rover and Volkswagen are soon to be joining existing mar ques in upgrading the software, with program manager for con nectivity and telematics at con sultants Frost & Sullivan, Krishna Jayaraman stating that, “Today the role of the car maker is changing,” Jayaraman said. He believes subscriptions will come into their own when pay ing for expensive technology, such as autonomous driving functions.

With its low road stance, sleek body, wide front grille and narrow headlights, the car has strong visual presence in a sector which includes the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf. My test model was a mid-
range Sport Lux version, priced at €25,126 (£22,795) with a 120 hp 2.0-litre petrol engine and six-speed manual gearbox. That combination delivers a crisp 0-100 kph time of 10.4 seconds, top speed of 196 kph (122 mph) and average fuel economy of 16.1 kpl (45.6 mpg). Emissions are 117 g/km. First driving impres-
sion is the car is very smooth and quiet. The suspension is a little firmer than many in the class, but that does enable the Mazda3 to corner with minimal lean and reassuring composure. On urban roads, the suspension set-up still provides a comfortable ride and only on rougher surfaces will you notice any mild vibration. The car is neatly and simply designed and the slightly understated appearance enhances the quality ambience. Mazda says the cabin design is ‘human-centric,’ which I think means the
main emphasis was on making everything easy to use! Despite the sloping roofline towards the rear, there is still adequate headroom in the back and while the boot space of 351 litres is not the biggest in the sector, it meets normal everyday requirements and the rear seats do fold down for larger loads. The rear styling of the Mazda3 is very eye-catching with discreet spoiler, wide tail-lights and twin exhausts. The narrow rear screen does restrict the view when reversing, but all models have reversing sen-

sors and many have a rearview camera. Other features on the test model include adaptive LED headlights, sat-nav, connectivity including smartphone mirroring, adaptive cruise control and dual-zone air-conditioning. Safety kit includes blindspot monitoring, auto-emergency city braking and a head-up display which projects key driving information onto the windscreen so you don’t have to take your eyes off the road. The Mazda3 impresses as a great overall package which will tick all the must-have boxes of most potential buyers and its cool new look also delivers an alluring visual cachet.

1996 Dodge Viper GTS have reached such great heights. In short, the answer is no, but what you do get is a unique ex perience where raw power meets basic ruggedness to pro vide a scary, yet life affirming ex perience that will both terrify you and enthral you in equal measures. So let’s start with some histo ry, the Viper was revealed as a concept car at the 1989 Detroit Motor Show. It then took three years for the engineers at Dodge to bring the concept to life with the first model rolling off the production line in 1992. First incarnations of the car were not greatly received, with the engine being the main cause for criticism. The original plan was to use the LA360 V8 with two extra cylinders bolted on, however in ternal ownership issues led to
the final production engine be coming a bit of a ‘what’s in,’ bor rowing parts from both Dodge and Chrysler’s parts bins. A shake up happened during 1995 when the whole engine and chassis were upgraded, and a new GTS version came on to the market. The engine was increased to over 450bhp and the drivetrain setup was refined. Later versions of the mk2 model would go on to become
the iconic sports car that would set hearts racing. Driving the car is a visceral ex perience, a hefty shove is re quired to get the car into first and a mixture of the long travel clutch pedal and the delicate na ture of the accelerator meant that pulling away was a fine art. Once moving, the first thing you notice is the noise, the car rumbles and knocks in a sound that only a highly tuned Ameri can V8 can make, much more

guttural than the V10s and V12s coming out of Germany of Italy. Another surprising feature is the surprising amount of front end grip the car has. With over 450bhp spinning through the back wheels the car remains planted and only when a little too heavy on the throttle, does the back end become playful. What soon does become ap parent is that once the novelty wears off, the cheap plastic inte rior and the uncomfortable dri
ving position becomes a problem, and the constant in your face attitude of the handling and driving be comes less of a joy and more of a chore. The car, whilst not quite a su percar, is more of a modern day hot rod that stands in a category all on its own, with no real peers, and with relatively low price tags for early models and very little mechanical issues on early examples, owning a bone fide classic piece of motoring history is a very doable ask.
