ACTING Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez took to the air on Monday September 16 to get a full view of southern Spain’s flood stricken regions as the death toll rose to six and air and train services were disrupted for a third day. Sanchez commanded a government helicopter to take to the air to see for himself the devastation left behind in the wake of the recent storms. He witnessed first-hand where flash floods had swept away cars and swamped homes in the regions of Valencia, Murcia and eastern Andalucia. Prime Minister Sanchez was clearly distressed at what he saw flying over Orihuela in Alicante. He ordered the helicopter to land so that he could personally visit a command centre for emergency operations. Sanchez met with many emergency ground workers, listening intently to their experiences of the events of the last few days of horror. Sanchez went on to offer his condolences to the families who have lost loved ones before strenuously making the point that the Government would be doing everything possible in its power to assist survivors of the disaster.

EMOTIONAL: Prime Minister Sanchez was clearly distressed at the flood devastation he saw first-hand. Clearly emotional as he arrived in Murcia, he told reporters, “All those who have been affected need to know the Spanish Government will help so that at least they can repair much of the material damage caused by this extraordinary meteorological phenomenon.” Sanchez went on to say water levels need to drop before
the Government can fully evaluate the total cost of the damage, adding that the Government will fund the clear up and repair operation. The Prime Minister’s statements supported comments made earlier by Spanish King Felipe VI, who said, “May we all, with the help of all, be able
to overcome the despair that now weighs on so many homes and families.” Locals clapped profusely as the Spanish Prime Minister reboarded his helicopter for ministerial meetings to arrange the aid required.

Fixed price A LAW has been drafted in Valencia that will allow people to set a fixed price with a taxi driver before their journey. The scheme is working in other parts of Spain and is designed to make taxi fares more transparent.
AID: It is estimated that the damage caused by the severe weather in the region will cost insurance companies approximately €190 million. IT is estimated that the Consortium of Insurance Compensation (CCS) will pay at least €190 million in compensation for the losses caused by the recent storms that have devastated parts of the region, of
which €92 million will go to the Comunitat Valenciana. These initial calculations are only preliminary and are based on emergency reports made by a team of CCS experts after evaluating the a ffe c te d a re a s , a ta s k tha t w a s made difficult due to the rain and
floods th at cont i nued over t he weekend and made some areas inaccessible. It is thought that the number of claims by policyholders will be around 30,000 and of these claims, 12,000 will come from the Valencia Region of which 9,300 correspond
to housing, shops, industries and civil works, and 2,700 to vehicles. The total estimated cost in this community amounts to €92 million, and the most damaged areas are Orihuela, the Vega Baja region in Alicante, Ontinyent and the Vall de Albaida region in Valencia.

gether for a competition to enable the dish to become an ‘Intangible Patrimony of the Humanity.’ The contest will take place the following Sunday, September 29 at the municipal sports centre in l’Alfàs del Pi from 12pm until 5pm. Tribute to Trevor TRIBUTES have been paid to a popular photographer and amateur thespian. Members of Moraira - Teulada University of the Third Age (U3A) gathered in Moraira Park on Saturday September 14 to remember Trevor Kemp who died last year. The members of U3A together with Trevor’s family had reached agreement with the town hall to install a memorial bench, complete with a plaque, in the park overlooking the nature pond. Trevor was an enthusiastic member of U3A and was much involved in the Drama and Photographic Groups as well as supporting the Friends of Avinenca Group which helped to maintain the nature pond. Past President John Hopwood and President David Haxon both spoke briefly about Trevor followed by a few emotional words from family members.

Threat to old walls THREE Villajoyosa families were evacuated from their homes during the recent storms. Masonry crumbled on the retaining wall beneath their properties in Calle del Pal in the Old Town after 35 millimetres of rain fell in less than 40 minutes. Firefighters, municipal employees, the mayor Andreu Verdu and Villajoyosa councillors visited the area to assess the damage and prevent a possible collapse. The torrential rain had exposed the terracing, built in the 18th century to support the back of the houses, the town hall explained afterwards. The walls were high, but not thick, and did not belong to the town ramparts that were destroyed during the War of Succession in the early 18th century. The evacuated families have been found accommodation at the Censal and Allon hotels until it is safe to return to their homes, Villajoyosa’s Urban Development councillor Pedro Alemany announced.

A dam interesting situation BENIARRES reservoir, practically empty in 2016, has had to open one of its three sluices. The dam’s capacity rose from 44 per cent to 70 per cent in 24 hours when the

The Confederacion Hidrografica del Jucar (CHJ), which controls the region’s waterways and reservoirs, is currently releasing 23 cubic metres of water per second of the Beniarres water to ensure that the River Serpis which feeds the reservoir does not flood upstream. The 500 millimetres of rain registered in El Comtat
and Beniarres was immediately reflected in the reservoir’s levels as the Serpis and its tributaries swelled in record time. Its principal concern, the CHJ explained, was ensuring that the reservoir does not exceed its established levels for this time of the year but can still absorb the river’s increased flow. The amount of released water is only moderate, the CHJ said, and will not cause problems downstream as it crosses La Safor to Gandia where it reaches the sea.

‘Drop charges’ call THE charges against two brothers accused of gang rape should be dropped, their lawyer maintained. Both live in Algeria and must report to the Alicante courts once a month after they were arrested in April last year. Their alleged victim, aged 19, told police that five men had raped her in an apartment near the Explanada in Alicante City. She admitted meeting one of the men in a pub in the port area and went back with him to his apartment, where there were three more men who all raped her, she claimed. At an identification parade she could identify only one, who was remanded but released three months later. Another of the accused left Spain and cannot be located, but she failed to recognise either of the two brothers. In some statements to the police and investigating judge she mentioned a fifth male who has not been identified. Pathologists found no biological evidence or DNA and according to the police, she sent 20 WhatsApp messages and voice mails as well as a five-minute phone call at the time she claimed she was being raped. Police also found in the past she had reported sexual abuse on three occasions, two of them in Ecuador where she previously lived.
High flyers come down to earth FOR decades Elda has released hot air balloons during the Santos Patronos fiestas. Initially, few worried about the problems they could pose to air traffic or the possibility that they could start a forest fire or pollute the environment. Four years ago, a balloon 7.5 metres high and 6.5 metres across that was released in honour of the Virgen de la Salud and Cristo del Buen Suceso, was blown 200 kilometres across the Mediterranean to Ibiza. The person who found it called the telephone number he found on the base of the bal-
loon, prompting the Santos Patronos fiestas committee to decide that the balloons should receive less helium so that they could not rise so high or travel so far. Last year another measure was introduced and each balloon is now fitted with a GPS device and another to empty it, making it easier to retrieve. The system has worked well since then and the four balloons released during the fiestas at the beginning of September have all been recovered and can be reused during next year’s celebrations.

A MAN accused of child abuse has told a court he has no memory of the alleged crimes. A 40-year-old man is in court for 10 charges of sexual abuse against minors and eight charges of exhibitionism and sexual provocation against a total of 20 victims. The prosecution for the case has requested that the man is jailed for 136 years, but the accused has repeatedly said he doesn’t “remember half of it” and that he doesn’t know if he has had sexual contact with underage children. It is alleged that the man, named only as Antonio P, asked boys between the ages of 13 and 15 in the Valencia region for sexually explicit

LGBTI advice centres THE Valencian council has outsourced advice to gays, lesbians, transsexuals, bisexuals and intersexuals to the most well-known associations in the region. The programme, named Orienta, is a pioneering initiative in the Valencian Community and one of the few public services of this type in the country. Its function is to inform and guide members of the LGBTI community, friends and families who need help in matters of gender identity and sexual orientation, as
well as psychological, social, legal, administrative or health support. “We help from trans people who are starting the process to people who have suffered aggressions or any other hate crime,” says the director of the service, Victor Sanchez. Although it has been active since July 1, the launch of the programme will take place in September. The service is staffed by seven professionals with different profiles, most of them graduates from LGTBI activism networks and social work.
More contract problems for APAD
Ex turned to arson
ANIMAL protection association APAD was again eliminated from the running to collect Denia’s strays. The local animal shelter has performed this municipal service for 25 years but in compliance with transparency laws, this was recently put out to tender. Following an error in APAD’s initial bid the concession should have gone to Serproanimal SL from Vinaros (Castellon) but the company was eliminated at the last minute after failing to provide the necessary documentation. Both the town hall and the local population hoped that APAD, which has a ‘zero put-down policy,’ would retain the contract but yet again its bid still did not meet contract requirements. A municipal report found that the shelter could accommodate only dogs and was unable to ensure that personnel would be able to pick up animals 24 hours a day. APAD does not always have a vet on hand and was unable to provide exact details of the animals it takes in, gives for adoption or the personnel providing this service. So far the town hall has taken no steps to put the contract out to tender and according to municipal sources it can could either opt for a negotiated procedure without publicity or restart the process from scratch.
A 50-YEAR-OLD Spaniard was arrested in Alcoy and charged with arson and robbery. Police launched an investigation after receiving a complaint from a woman who claimed that someone had set fire to her home, stolen her television and damaged several motorcycles that belonged to her. Investigators soon fixed their attention on the victim’s ex-boyfriend who was allegedly heard making derogatory remarks about her and their relationship. He had asked several people about the woman on the day of the fire and he was arrested once police found that he had been detained for starting a fire in 2009.

THE Marina Alta area, and some parts of the Marina Baixa, have been dubbed the ‘epicentre of illegal gambling’ in the Valencian Community. A regulatory body of the regional police carried out 23,258 inspections in different gambling establishments over the last year, resulting in 4,084 sanctions for a variety of reasons. The main focus of the inspections is to uncover illegal gambling and underground casinos at casinos, gaming halls and bingo halls across the region. Many of these establish-
ments open at night with gambling tables and roulette wheels that are not regulated. Much of the investigation was focused on Benidorm where there are numerous establishments that accept unregulated bets on horse racing and other sports by Spanish and expat residents alike. There is also some concern about these establishments being available for underage gamblers. Police are working to regulate gambling halls, not just in terms of the games, but also to ensure that the buildings meet the necessary regulations.
Father and son fall to death A FATHER and son fell to their deaths under strange circumstances on Sunday in Gandia. The National Police have opened an investigation to find out how the pair fell from the fifth floor of a building in Gandia at around 1.30pm on Sunday. Although there is no official statement, the initial reports suggest that an argument broke out between the two men and the 60-year-old father fell followed by his 29-year-old son a few seconds later. Police are talking to witnesses and neighbours to find out more about what happened as the circumstances are yet to be explained.

Exit like Incredible Hulk JUST 36 days before the Brexit deadline, the UK Prime Minister met EC President Jean-Claude Junker for the first time on Monday. Boris Johnson had nothing new to bring to the table other than his declared preference to be ‘dead in a ditch’ rather than extend the deadline. The Luxembourg meeting was the first between the two leaders since Boris Johnson took office in July and while Mr Johnson stressed the UK wanted a deal, delivering to deadline was key. In the Mail on
Sunday, he likened the UK to the comic book character the Incredible Hulk bursting out of EU restraints come what may a position that could end in court. Last week Parliament passed a law forcing the PM to seek an extension to the deadline rather than leave without a deal. Despite declaring the intention to obey the law, UK government ministers have confirmed that the UK will walk away on October 31 regardless. Talks focused on specific ideas to control plants
and livestock movements at the Northern Ireland border as an alternative to the Irish backstop which remains the sticking point. Now that the UK government has lost its majority, the support of the DUP is less relevant to Mr Johnson who could allow different rules for Northern Ireland to break the deadlock. Although the proposals have been likened in Brussels as last night’s takeaway with a sprinkling of fresh herbs. Mr Johnson wrote in Monday’s Daily Telegraph newspaper that he believes a deal is possible within three weeks.

‘Put career before country’ FORMER Prime Minister David Cameron has accused Boris Johnson of putting his political career before Britain’s best interests. In David Cameron’s forthcoming memoirs, he says Boris Johnson was never a fan of Brexit but jumped on the bandwagon for his own ends. David Cameron says he has no regrets about calling the referendum on Europe having been bound, he said, by a Tory manifesto pledge to do so. Mr Cameron campaigned for remain while Mr Johnson rallied the call to leave resulting in the then Prime Minister’s resignation when his side unexpectedly lost the vote. He says his former colleague was more worried about winning a popularity contest within his own party than taking the country in the right direction. In his memoirs, published in the Sunday Times, Mr Cameron writes: ‘Whichever senior Tory politician took the lead on the Brexit side - so loaded with images of patriotism, independence and romance - would become the darling of the party. ‘He [Mr Johnson] didn’t want to risk allowing someone else with a high profile - Michael Gove in particular - to win that crown. The conclusion I am left with is that he [Boris Johnson] risked an outcome he didn’t believe in because it would help his political career.’ He also criticises Mr Johnson for misleading voters with promises he could not follow through when he rode the Brexit bus with a banner claiming leaving would gain the NHS an extra £350m a week. He says: "Boris rode the bus round the country, he left the truth at home."
LIBERAL Democrats have voted to reverse Brexit if they win the next General Election. The policy was confirmed at the party’s annual conference. Previously the party had campaigned for a second referendum and say they will continue to argue for a second vote before a General Election.
Junker wants win EU president may gift deal to the UK to end his final weeks in office. British officials have said Jean-Claude Juncker will be keen to agree a deal to end his presidency with a win but Euro diplomats say he will not force Ireland to accept a climbdown over the backstop.
Drop backstop THE Irish backstop plan has been declared ‘undemocratic.’ Dominic Raab, Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs has said the backstop must be removed before any agreement can be reached and that proposals for a future trading relationship between the EU and UK had to be ‘much more ambitious.’

Ferry break up THE ‘doomed’ Balearia ferry that ran aground on August 17 was filmed last week being thrashed around in huge waves caused by the storms in the area. An action plan to dismantle and remove the ship from the breakwater in the port of Denia has been put in place, but extensive damage to the starboard side of the ferry has delayed these plans. Although the ferry has not yet sunk as a result of the damage, it is clear that it will need to be removed sooner rather than later. INNOVATIVE: A team of university students have launched a carpool app called Journify for short journeys in Valencia.
Journify carpooling in Valencia CAR sharing or ‘carpooling’ is not a new concept around the world with countries such as the United States embracing the concept on a daily basis. In Spain, apps such as BlaBlaCar have been around for a number of years and offer people the option to share long journeys around the country and split the cost of fuel and tolls. A Valencian startup, Journify, has now launched an app offering a similar service to BlaBlaCar but with daily jour-
neys, a niche that has not been covered in Spain. The company first targeted university students who drive every day to their classes by highlighting to them that they could save more than €1,000 a year by carpooling with other people heading to the same destination. “Journify is born out of necessity. The founding partners live outside Valencia, in different municipalities, and when we travelled we spent a lot on petrol or time on public transport,” explains Ignacio Zaballos, Road
Engineer and CEO of Journify. Initially the founders published their journeys on BlaBlaCar to try to tackle their problem, but they were not successful as it was an application aimed at long distances between cities. Instead they decided to design the app which now has more than 10,000 users and is available to download on Google Play and Apple Store. Journify are now collaborating with universities to increase the reach of their app and hope to increase to 100,000 users by the end of the year.

Firefighters injured TWO firefighters have been treated for heat stroke and thermal burns they suffered whilst extinguishing an electrical fire that was reported in the General Hospital in Alicante. The fire broke out at around 5.20pm in a closed room on the second floor of the hospital. Five teams of firefighters attended the scene and managed to get the blaze under control within half an hour. The flames consumed the entire room although the hospital was not evacuated and all patients were kept away from the area. Two of the firefighters suffered heat stroke and thermal burns whilst extinguishing the flames due to the extreme heat and are being treated for their injuries which are not life threatening. It is unknown at this time what caused the fire and an investigation is being carried out.

Strange animal spotted OUTFOXED: There have been several sightings of a strange foxlike creature in the mountains of Calpe.
A CROSS between a dog and a fox has been spotted in the mountain range behind Calpe. The animal was spotted by a German resident in the area who was out walking. The creature followed the man but seemed harmless and docile rather than threatening. The man told Calpe resident, Pedro Garcia, about the peculiar animal and found out that he too had seen it from a distance and could not work out whether it was a fox or a dog - or both. The description of the animal is rather vague but it is believed to have long legs, too long for a fox, a bushy fox’s tail, and a slender dog’s body with a fox like face. Whatever the animal is, it appears to be no threat to people and although not as mysterious as the Loch Ness Monster or the illusive Big Foot, it makes for an interesting sight nonetheless.

In total, there were eight vehicles on show in Foietes which were all hybrids or 100 per cent electric. The council has five hybrid cars, four plug-in hybrids and one 100 per cent electric vehicle. González de Aárate is convinced that in the coming years Benidorm will have a much larger ecological mobile park.

Sports centre wrecked A TORNADO that ripped through Denia left devastation in its wake. Denia’s sports complex was badly damaged and may have to be completely rebuilt. Part of the sports hall’s roof was torn off, one wall collapsed, flooring was destroyed and windows shattered. Vicent Grimalt, Denia’s
mayor, and Sports councillor Raul Garcia de la Reina announced that it would be impossible to carry out repairs until the 2019-2020 season ends. The rugby ground, athletics pitch and the Valencian ballgame court will be reopened to the public once the sports hall’s roof has been secured and the public’s safety can be guaranteed, Garcia de la Reina said.
Art and wine FLAVORS WINE BAR in Javea will be hosting an art exhibition with works by the Catalan artist, Laura Serradilla on Saturday September 22. With recommendations from the in-house sommelier and jazz by guitarist Stefan Max, it promises to be a fabulous night of culture.

Unmanned raft found in Javea THE crew of the Sol de Javea, a fishing boat from Javea, found a raft drifting 15 miles from the Cabo de San Ant oni o on M onday whilst fishing. Upon approaching the raft the crew discovered that there was nobody on board. It is believed that the occupants of the raft must have made it to land and abandoned the boat. Due to the strong winds the boat had drifted out to sea and was a hazard for passing boats, so the fishing boat decided to tow it to the port in Javea and reported their discover y to the Guardia Civil.

Organ donation Living in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. As of 2010, Spain has operated an ‘opt-out’ (or presumed consent) system for deceased organ donation. This addresses the rate or refusal of potential donors or their families in giving permission for the use of organs. The rate of family refusal in Spain is 13 per cent, compared to 37 per cent in England (according to the National Transplant Organisation figures - ONT). According to the ONT, Brits living in Spain are more likely to donate their organs than their countrymen back home. It’s not necessary to have a donor card. What is important is to let family members and loved ones know your wishes in terms of organ donation. Figures published by the Spanish ONT in 2017 put the country as world leader in donation and transplants, reaching a new record with 46.9 donors per million people and 5.261 transplants. Spain has been a global leader in organ donation and transplantation for the past 26 years. Broken down by organ, there were 3,269 kidney surgeries (up 9 per cent on 2016), 1,247 liver transplants (up 8 per cent), 304 heart procedures (8 per cent rise), 363 lung surgeries (up 18 per cent), 70 pancreas transplants (down 4 per cent) and eight bowel surgical procedures (up 100 per cent). According to the National Transplant Organisation (ONT), these surgeries are equivalent to six donors and 14 surgical procedures a day. In addition, Spain saw a new record in bone marrow donation last year, with 78,291 new donors and an increase of 196 per cent over the previous year. At this rate, the country could reach its target of 400,000 bone marrow donors well before the mid-2020 goal. In Spain the number of those on the waiting list was reduced to 4,896 in 2017, from 5,480, although the number of children waiting for organs increased to 74, from 48 a year earlier. Lung and heart are viable for 4-6 hours after death, liver and pancreas 24 hours, kidney 72 hours, corneas 14 days, bone and skin five years, and heart valves up to 10 years. Small intestines, veins, tendons and ligaments can also be donated. A single organ donor can save up to eight people and a single tissue donor may enhance the lives of up to 50 people. NIGEL CONSTABLE, owner of the Company Bar in B e n i d o r m O l d To w n , passed away in his sleep on Monday morning after a short spell in hospital. Nigel was a much-loved character in Benidorm and tributes have been paid on social media after it was announced he had passed away in his sleep. Friend and Euro Weekly News columnist Barry Duke, posted on his Facebook account: ‘Learned with sadness today that my dear friend Nigel Constable, owner of Company Bar in Benidorm, died in the early hours of this morning. I’ll miss his wit, wisdom... and his bouts of irascibility. ‘He inspired me to write many a column for Euro Weekly News, and for that I shall always remember him.’ A post on the bar’s Facebook account read: ‘The funeral for Nigel Constable will take place at

Making an insurance claim after the storms THE storms which wreaked havoc across Valencia, Alicante, Murcia and Almería last week were amongst the most severe we have witnessed in recent years and left a trail of destruction and sadly loss of life across the region. If your home or vehicle is insured and has been damaged during these storms then you will want to make a claim. Your first call will be to your insurer or the broker or agent who sold you the policy. When you give them details of the damage and how it was caused you may well be advised that this is covered by the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros and not your insurance company. So, what is the Consorcio and how does it work? The Consorcio is a public insurance company created by the Spanish government in 1941. It has many functions but the key one in this case is coverage of extraordinary risks to persons and property. Contracting an insurance policy with a private insurer in Spain carries with it separate coverage against extraordinary risks, the coverage extending to the same property and people covered by that policy and for the same amounts. The natural risks covered are earthquakes, tidal waves or tsunamis, floods, volcanic eruptions, wind storms (tornadoes and winds gusting to more than 120km/h) and falling
INSURANCE ADVICE: What to do in the wake of flooding. objects and meteorites. Flood is the risk that accounts for most of the claims in Spain. Flood is defined as an inundation of land due to the accumulation or runoff of rainwater, meltwater or waters from lakes, rivers or inlets through overflow of
their natural beds or channels. It also covers damage caused by coastal battering. Damage produced by rain falling directly on the insured property or collected by its roof or cover, drainage system or patios is not covered by the Consorcio. Water from
dams, canals, sewers, collectors and other man-made underground channels is also not covered unless these are ruptured by an extraordinary event covered by the Consorcio. A useful rule of thumb is that if the rain water comes through your roof it is not covered by the Consorcio, but if the rain water comes through your door it is. Appraisal of the damage is carried out by claims assessors appointed by the Consorcio. The Consorcio is funded by a compulsory surcharge on the policy premiums on several lines of insurance including home and vehicle insurance. Private insurers collect this surcharge alongside the policy premium and deposit those funds with the Consorcio on behalf of the customer. How to make a claim? As mentioned above, your first port of call is to the insurer, broker or agent who sold you the policy. Triple killing arrest A MAN has been arrested in Spain for allegedly killing his ex-partner, his ex-mother-in-law and his ex-brother-inlaw in the Pontevedra town of Valga. Police report that the man allegedly committed the triple killing in the town’s district of Carracido, in the parish of Cordeiro, before returning home to A Coruña. He then reportedly turned himself in to the Guardia Civil and allegedly confessed to the crimes. The events took place in the early hours of Monday morning. The Guardia Civil has taken charge of the investigation, of which no more details have yet been released.

Inheritance in Spain
WE CAN HELP YOU Can you disinherit a child? WE regularly receive visits to our law office from Spaniards and expatriates from many different countries asking for advice over inheritance and succession laws in Spain. One question is often asked and that is whether it is possible to disinherit or leave nothing in the will to one or more child. The answer to this question is not simple. Spanish law In principle and according to the Spanish Civil Code, a large proportion of the assets which form part of the estate, (approximately two-thirds) are reserved for direct relatives and generally it can be assumed that one third of the estate (which is a strict requirement) must be distributed amongst any children in equal proportion, and another third (called improve-
ment - mejora) may be shared by children, grandchildren, etc in any way that the deceased may have chosen. However, it must be taken into account that not all the provinces and territories within Spain follow the same laws as there are some regions that have their own inheritance regulations such as Navarra, Basque Country (Euskadi), etc. Spanish law doesn’t always apply In addition, it should be taken into consideration that not all inheritances in Spain are governed by Spanish Law, so, according to European Regulation 650/2012, the law that will apply to an inheritance in Spain will be the law of country of the last domicile of the deceased at time of death, unless the deceased had opted for his or her national law. Choice of applicable law Therefore, it is possible either because you don’t have Spanish nationality or have your resi-
dence elsewhere that Spanish law may not apply to you. It is sometimes very convenient for foreigners living in Spain to opt to follow their own national law, as it may be more flexible and allow them the freedom to distribute their assets in the way that they prefer. Disinheritance according to the Spanish Civil Code Although theoretically it is possible to disinherit the descendants, what is regulated in the Spanish Civil Code, in its article 853 and related, for causes such as the mistreatment, injuries, denial of assistance when needed, etc, the reality is that in practice, without strong evidence to prove these causes, it is very complicated. There are however perfectly legal strategies to avoid the application of Spanish law or the law of the nationality (if it forces you to leave part of your inheritance to a child that you do not want to benefit from it), or at least minimise the rights of this
descendant, but adequate advice when making a Will is essential. There are different options in relation to the applicable law which should be checked as it is perfectly possible to benefit the descendants that you favour by having a thorough knowledge of the law. It is also possible that the appointment of an executor by the testator will benefit your preferred heir. Some of these options are also useful in relation to the possible claims that a spouse’s descendants may have, in the scenarios of married couple with joint assets or community matrimonial regime as exists in Spain and France. Cars frontman dies RIC OCASEK, lead singer of the rock band The Cars has been found dead in his town house in Manhattan. Famous for their hugely popular 70’s and 80’s hits including My Best Friend’s Girl, Ocasek was 75 years old and the New York Police department released a statement saying they received a call at around 4pm Sunday for an unconscious male. Ocasek’s identity was confirmed by the police and was pronounced dead at the scene at the townhouse on East 19th Street. He leaves behind two children from his former super model wife Paulina Porizkova who he separated from only last year.

Rod’s revelation ICONIC singer Sir Rod Stewart stunned an audience this week as he revealed he has had prostate cancer and had been receiving treatment for two years. Sir Rod then went onto explain that he has fought the cancer, aided by two years of excellent treatment, and now has been given the all clear. Rod, who was knighted in 2016 for his services to music and industry, revealed the news to a stunned audience at a special prostrate fundraiser alongside his ‘best mate’ Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones, previously ‘The Small Faces,’ which group Sir Rod was a part of many years ago. The event for the revelation was held at the Wentworth Club based in leafy Surrey. Father-of-seven Sir Rod took to the stage in front of 500 people to say “No one knows this, but I think this is the time to tell everybody, I’ve had prostate cancer and I’m now in the clear - simply because I caught it early because I have so many tests.” Rod now wants to raise the awareness about prostate cancer and is urging men to take preliminary measures and to go for simple tests.
Where’s Wally? AN Icelandic woman who was reported missing during a bus trip in Iceland’s Eldja Canyon spent hours with the search party searching for herself. The group had been travelling around Iceland and upon boarding the bus after a stop at a volcanic canyon, one of the passengers was
reported missing. The woman had changed clothes and did not identify herself as the alleged missing woman by the description given. It was at 3am when it eventually came to light that the woman was actually in the search party and had been all along. It certainly gives new meaning to finding yourself!

Keeping the fiestas alive THE Virgen del Sufragio association of Peñas fiestas groups is celebrating its 35th anniversary. The association is one of Benidorm’s largest social collective with a total of 4,500 members who take part in the town fiestas each November. Netball for fun and solidarity THE organisers of the Fun Day Netball tournament recently visited Alfaz Town Hall. As reported previously in the Euro Weekly News the Alfaz Netball team is hosting the event in memory of Lynne Ward and Caroline Lambert who lost their lives to cancer within days of each other in December last year. Both played for the team, together with the 14 members who gave details of the Fun Day to Alfaz’s mayor Vicente Arques, Sports councillor Oscar Perez and Groups councillor Martine Mertens. Lisa Griffin, of Brew Rock in Albir, decided to organise the tournament and fundraiser in memory of Lynne and Caroline and soon netball teams from Javea, Pinoso, Torrevieja, La Manga and Valencia

Spain’s Met Office Red Alert meant that the Costa Blanca and all of Alicante Province were at risk of more than 90 millimetres of rain in less than an hour and an accumulation of more than 180 millimetres in 12 hours. Smashing pumpkins EACH year Jose Alvarez Moya grows pumpkins that can weigh more than 50 kilos each. He is a farmer from the Carbonera district in Alfaz whose crop this year includes two pumpkins that weigh 52 and 54 kilos respectively with two more tipping the scales at 45 and 48 kilos. The heaviest of the four is 50 centimetres high and has a circumference of 1.7 metres. There is no secret to growing his pumpkins, Jose said. Frequent watering, fertiliser in the
soil and - most important of all a lot of love, is all that is needed. Despite their size the pumpkins are edible and taste good, he added. Jose explained that his father once raised a giant pumpkin whose seeds he saved for the following year. Since then the seeds have been saved and planted from one year to the next, Jose said. He added that he has no commercial interest in producing the giant pumpkins apart from continuing the family tradition and usually gives them away.
Commitment to sport SPORTS councillor Oscar Perez outlined his department’s strategies for the 2019-2020 season. These will be split into two blocks, centring on the activities of local sports clubs and either improving sports infrastructures or building more. The town hall was committed to supporting the clubs as it has been doing up to now, Perez said, and plans to invest €600,000 in promoting and encouraging sport and will spend more than €1.2 million on agreements with clubs.

INTRODUCING the Land Bank scheme had to be postponed owing to bad weather. With the entire region on Red Alert, Altea’s Agriculture and Environment councillor Jose Orozco apologised for having to postpone and announced that the meeting would now be held at the Casa de Cultura on September 27. The Banco de Tierras, jointly promoted by Altea Town Hall and the Rural Promotion Agency, Buscatierras, is an initiative to reduce the large number of neglected plots of previously cultivated land. This will put the owners of neglected land who are willing to cede or rent it out in contact with others wishing to put it to agricultural use once more. The town’s economy is currently based on tourism, services and industry unlike the past when the local population earned a living principally from agriculture and fishing. At present Altea has 1,271 plots - 325 hectares - of unworked land, Orozco revealed when the Banco de Tierras project was first announced. Around 20 per cent of Al-

Decide where the money goes ALTEA residents will again choose how part of the town hall budget is spent. At a meeting held in the Casa de Cultura, Citizens’ Participation councillor Maria Antonia Lavios reviewed proposals put forward in previous years, listing those that were chosen and have now been carried out. Last year’s choice was improvements to the section of the Camino de l’Algar at the back of the municipal sports complex, although the contract to carry out the work has yet to be put out to tender. She called on the local population to present their ideas so that ‘between us all we can have the Altea that we all imagine and want.’ This will be the third year that Altea Town Hall will be taking residents’ opinions and feelings into account and once their ideas and proposals are in, a Participation Committee will choose 10 of these which will then be put to a popular vote. As it did last year, the town hall is setting aside a €100,000 allocation and in December will announce which of the suggestions has been chosen.

Although the 2017 measures are not directly responsible, these have nevertheless influenced gunpowder’s higher price, Calpe councillors agreed. As a result, there has been a noticeable reduction in blunderbuss battles in all Moors and Christians fiestas, owing to the problems faced by participants. “We believe these obstacles could lead to the disappearance of some of the celebrations’ most significant episodes,” said Calpe’s mayor Ana Sala.

Storms left their mark CALPE’S Levante beach took the full force of the recent storms. Footbaths were wrecked and accesses damaged, although other parts of the town were also affected. Fallen trees blocked Calle Castellon and

Solar-powered clean-up T H E Wo r l d W i l d l i f e Fund sailed into Calpe recently. The 14-metre catamaran, WWF Solar, uses only solar power that is produced by photovoltaic panels and solar power energy accumulators. The boat has an entry in the Guinness Book of Records and is the only solar-powered craft to cross the Atlantic, a feat it achieved in 2007. During its two-day stay in Calpe, the WWF Solar set out each day from Calpe’s Club Nautico, removing all the plastics within its reach. The WWF Solar is sailing along the Valencian coast t h r o u g h o u t S e p t e m b e r, cleaning the surface as well as the seabed with the help of volunteers from diving
clubs during its frequent stopovers. The WWF set up an information point on the promenade at the La Fossa beach ea c h mo rn in g d u rin g its stay, promoting its awareness campaign to highlight the effect that plastics have on marine wildlife. T h e o rg a n i s a t i o n a l s o held workshops on recycling aboard the WWF Solar at the Club Nautico. Calpe Town Hall stressed its commitment to the WWF campaign entitled ‘Your legacy to the planet: leave something to nature and you’ll leave nature for future generations.’ Including WWF España in a will is another way of protecting the planet even when we are no longer here, municipal sources said.

The festivities begin at 8pm with the customary Entrada de la Murto and procession throughout the streets, followed by decorating the Divina Pastora chapel and setting up a poplar in front of the entrance. There will be a procession the next day at 7pm with the Falço team and the massed Teulada pipes and drums before the chapel opens at 7.45pm to recite the Angelus, followed by an outdoor dinner with bar service. Sunday sees the children’s games at 11.30am and at 1pm vermouth for all provided by the San Vicente wine cooperative. The Pa Beneit (Blessed Bread) procession starts in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento at 6.30pm followed by mass and the Ball de Danses in Carrer de Dalt with fireworks to mark the end of the fiestas.

ALBERT, a Teulada-Moraira 16year-old, recently formalised his gender change. He explained in the Spanish media that ever since he could remember he felt like a boy although at birth he was registered as a female and given a girl’s name. Normalising gender change is a battle that society has won, he said, after Spain’s highest court, the Constitutional Tribunal, recently ruled that minors in Spain can register their new gender on their DNI identity cards before reaching 18. In Albert’s case, this marks the end of a long fight to change his name and gender, although he emphasised that he has always been able to count on the support of his family and friends.

Teulada Moraira NEWS Understanding the Marina Alta’s roots THE land and the sea dominated the 10th edition of the Alere-Dolia gastronomy event. Chefs Maria Jose San Roman and Maria Jose Martinez, the fish-curing expert Tony Perez Marcos, accompanied by Santi Gomez, a master ice-cream maker and drinks expert and another drinks expert, Ivan Talens, took the Alere-Dolia visitors through a series of demonstrations at the Teulada-Moraira Auditorium. All gave prominence to the Mediterranean Sea, the Mediterranean landscape and the Mediterranean’s generous store cupboard as principal elements in understanding the Marina Alta’s roots. Inevitably all the Alere-Dolia participants laid particular emphasis on Teulada-Moraira’s muscatel grapes which were the original inspiration for the first Dolia events. There was also a section devoted to the youngest visitors, Alere-Dolia Kids, with a recycling workshop, demonstrating how to reuse and put to better use the plastics that are inevitably present in the sea and on the local beaches.

rubbish collection service had worked ‘exceptionally,’ the town hall said. Together with the Local Police, Proteccion Civil they had been on call 24 hours a day and thanks to their actions, the bad weather had not altered TeuladaMoraira’s day-to-day life.
TEULADA-MORAIRA’s young have now chosen the sports they want to practise during the 2019-2020 season. The town hall announced that some places are still free in the municipal sports schools, all of which have now begun training. So far, 48 young people have signed up for athletics, 41 for badminton, 67 for basketball and 160 for football. Another 32 have chosen paddle-tennis, 10 tennis and 12 volleyball. A notice on the town hall website wished them ‘a magnificent season,’ but the opposition on the local council accused the town hall of undoing the municipal football school’s hard work. “The Partido Popular wishes to express its preoccupation and disagreement with the situation created by the local government and the mayor, Rosa Vila,” the party claimed. “The school was, and is, regarded as an example in the area, not only for its good results but because it also inculcated fundamental values of commitment, discipline and, of
course, team spirit,” the PP claimed. It went on to criticise the town hall’s decision at the beginning of the season to dismiss the former coordinators for alleged economic reasons. “Is training our young people a matter of economics for the
mayor?” the PP asked, while questioning whether it was normal that half the young people enrolled at the municipal football school had to practise sport in other towns. The present local government clearly has other priorities, the PP maintained.

Someone makes a toxic mistake The company contracted to clear vegetation from Teulada-Moraira’s verges also sprayed nearby vines with glyphosate. THE toxic herbicide has been approved by the European Union although Spanish environmentalists strongly oppose its use, questioning manufacturer Monsanto’s claims that glyphosate is “relatively benign” to non-target plants and wildlife. “Seanto SA, awarded the contract in 2018, failed to follow the regional government’s instructions and recommendations,” Moraira Town Hall revealed recently on its social media sites. On fumigating verges with the glyphosate, Seanto also sprayed vines and ripening muscatel grapes, the town hall continued. “This fruit should not be eaten and nor should it be used to

Equality councillor Maman Botija announced that the town hall would be joining the Emergencia Feminista demonstration outside the town hall at 8.30pm. The protest has been organised by the Plataforma Feminista de Alicante to underline the need to eradicate the gender violence, that made this a ‘black summer,’ with so many women killed by their partners, Botija said.
Members of the local Colectiva Feminista called on Teulada-Moraira businesses and members of the public to turn the streets violet, the colour associated in Spain with feminism and the struggle for gender equality. The Alicante Plataforma announced tomorrow’s Emergencia Feminista last August, maintaining that sexist terrorism continued to show its worst face. “On September 20, Teulada-Moraira will be part of the Feminist Emergency!” Botija declared.

Javea NEWS Milestone for Olaya OLAYA, Javea’s ‘brittle bone’ baby is now three and has started school. They are “immensely happy” and relieved, her parents said. “Her evolution has been incredible,” her mother Laura Goberna declared. “We used to doubt if she would ever be able to walk, and now she never stops.” A few months after Olaya was born, Laura learnt that her daughter was affected by osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) or brittle bone disease. Three years ago, she confessed in an interview with the local Spanish media that she was afraid even to pick her daughter up. The child was so fragile that a brusque movement was enough to fracture one of her bones, she said.
Everything has changed since then, Laura said. Olaya goes to Madrid, to the Getafe teaching hospital which is a leader in treating OI and where she receives medication to strengthen her bones. “She had so many fractures at first, but now she is ver y strong and has so much energy,” Laura marvelled.
Olaya goes to the Maria Inmaculada school with her sister Gabriela, and where she is treated like everyone else, although pupils and teachers are aware of her condition. “I’m very satisfied. We thought that Olaya would need to be taught at home but now she goes to school and is so happy,” Laura said.

Photographs by frontrunners ONE of the Valencian Community’s most compelling photography events opened recently in Javea. The first edition of the Spanish-Latin American photography festival, Ojos Rojos (Red Eyes) at the Casa de Cultura and organised by the Arteria Urbana association, included photographs and talks on the latest topics in the photography world. Mili Sanchez and Mike Steel,
the two people behind the festival, launched the event’s programme accompanied by Javea’s Culture councillor Quico Moragues. The festival opened with two talks at the Casa de Cultura while the Museo Soler Blasco displayed the festival’s first series of photographs by the legendary Tina Modotti, curated by her biographer Margaret Hooks. These photographs intro-
duced the observer to a woman who is now regarded as a myth owing to her social activism and her career as a frontrunner in photojournalism in Mexico during the era of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. “We are lucky and privileged to bring to Javea an exhibition that is so important that would be at home in New York’s Museum of Modern Art,” the organisers said.
Migrant boat found adrift AN empty patera boat used by migrants was found off the Javea coast. The crew of the Sol de Javea spotted it when they were fishing 15 nautical miles - approximately 28 kilometres - from Cabo de San Antonio. The boat was drifting and there were no passengers, Juan Antonio Erades, the Sol de Javea’s skipper, said afterwards. From his knowledge of the area and the currents it was likely that the boat had reached the shore, but was then pushed out to sea again by the heavy seas and high wind, Erades said. As the drifting boat was a danger to other boats, it was decided to tow the patera back to Javea port and advise the Guardia Civil, he said. Although comparatively few of the migrant boats are known to have landed in Javea, two were found this year at the Cala de Ambolo beach. On the first occasion an empty boat was found in May but the occupants were not located, although on the second occasion last August, nine migrants were detained.

And red tape is set to increase hugely, with each shipment requiring a customs form, going through cus toms controls plus the payment of tariffs and other duties. Meetings between tax officials and business associations, companies and customs specialists have been held to discuss the trade and borderrelated problems related to Brexit.
The Spanish government has put contingency plans into place, and the Finance Ministry, which is largely re sponsible for the customs service, has been planning for a no deal scenario for months. Air and sea ports have been as signed more resources to deal with the extra workload expected. While the customs paperwork is not expect ed to be a major problem the need to meet new regulations not just for food and animals, but also medicines and chemical products is a big con cern.

Seat to China
THE Seat and Cupra bands are set to expand into China and Chile. CEO of Cupra and Seat’s commer cial vice president, Wayne Griffiths, says that the former is preparing to start selling in China, while the lat ter will enter the Chilean market in the next few months. Griffiths stressed that Seat must have a more diversified geographic presence and grow beyond Europe. “We’re doing it in North Africa, we’re starting our development in Latin America and we’re preparing to reach China in two or three years,” he said.

Busy times for AENA AENA airports handled 186.8 million passengers in the first eight months of the year, 5 per cent more than in the same period last year, with Madrid’s Adolfo Suarez leading the way with 5.8 million in August alone.

Replying to criticism from the President of the PP, Pablo Casado, who pointed out that ‘inertia is over’ and asked him to ‘fix Spain,’ Sanchez said: “For your peace of mind, Mr Casado, the deficit is under con
trol. At the end of 2019 it will be 2 per cent of GDP, a reduction of 0.5 points compared to 2018. We must be doing something right.” Sanchez has recognised a cooling of the econo my, blaming ‘trade tensions’ and the adoption of protectionist policies by countries like the United States. But he referred to estimates from the Euro pean Commission and said that “Spain will continue to grow and lead” the European economy.

Nuclear fall out

ENRESA, the stateowned company in charge of scrapping Spain’s remaining nuclear power stations does not have enough money. Now the government must decide whether the extra bill is paid only by the electricity companies or al so by the user. Endesa, Iberdrola, Natur gy and EDP, the companies that own the plants will have to face an extra bill of just over €4 billion for the power stations’ scrapping. In addition, users should al so contribute, via their electricity bills, an addition al billion. This is according to the latest report of Enresa, pub lished just a few days ago, which sets the cost of the complete dismantling of nu

Cash injection by Iberdrola SPANISH electricity company Iberdola is using cash from the 40 per cent sale of its East Anglia wind farm to increase the capital of subsidiary Scottish Power by £1.36 billion (€1.523 billion) to safeguard it against Brexit.
Loans ruling clear power plants at an in flation adjusted total of €14.113 billion in a process that will last until 2070. In addition to scrapping, other costs would have to be borne. Bankia trial extended A TRIAL investigating alleged irregularities in Bankia’s initial share offering (IPO) in July 2011 has been extended for another week. It is now scheduled to end on Wednesday, September 25, more than 10 months after oral evidence started to be heard. The Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office began its final presentation on September 2. It raised from four to 15 the total number of people for whom it is asking for a conviction by including the crime of false accounting, which it added to
previous charges of swindling investors. Now investors’ group 15MPaRato is asking for the conviction of 21 individuals, while consumers’ group Adicae has maintained its accusation against 34 people. Ignacio Ayala, the lawyer of former Bankia president Rodrigo Rato, has blamed the Bankia case on an “unlucky accident,” saying “everything was done with the best intention.” In 2016 the Supreme Court ordered Bankia to repay small investors as the IPO was misleading.
THE Supreme Court has ruled that people cannot be evicted from their homes until they have a debt equivalent to 12 months payments or 3 per cent of the capital loaned in a case about unfair mortgage terms.
Block bond BANCO SANTANDER is issuing a $20 million (€18 million) bond using ‘blockchain’ technology, with financial director José García Cantera, saying the technology will be faster and make the bond more transparent for its clients.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT ONE thing I have learned over the years is that you should always be prepared to admit being in the wrong. Seeing an antagonist’s aggressive expression change when you quickly accept the blame can be quite rewarding. Often they can think of nothing to say at all and their whole confrontational attitude crumbles into an embarrassed mumble. Well, today I can quite happily admit to be ing in the wrong. I did set out this week to pour scorn on the latest snowflake scheme to introduce programmes which would ad dress the transgender needs of animals! Under ‘you couldn’t make it up’ I was preparing to cite two women, who recently appeared on television advocating plans to respect and assist transgender penguins and sexually confused dogs! Before I began the piece I decided to do a little research. To my surprise, I subsequently discov ered that this whole scenario has in fact been studied in some depth and there are actually quite a number of species who have shown examples of transgender and homo sexual leanings. No,it’s not only your friend ly local rabbit or randy little pooch, prepared

TRANSGENDER PENGUINS: A reflection of our diverse planet? to hump just about anything that stays still long enough but a whole selection of the animal king dom on this diverse planet of ours. One which I found most endearing was a magnificent beast called Mmamoriri. Sporting an impressive mane, Mmamoriri is a Lion/ess living with a pride in the Okavango Delta Botswana. Looking for all the world like a
large male, the animal actually has the sex or gans of a female. She is a beautiful specimen and appears to live in complete harmony with the rest of the group. She is in fact an asset, as the more males appear in a pride the larg er the territory they can control. So, although I admit to being on com pletely the wrong track in this instance, I still rather fail to see why animals in these cir
cumstances need any ‘help.’They actually seem to be coping perfectly well on their own. Perhaps it’s the complete acceptance of those around them. Something to be learned there perhaps? Not sure I’d want to get close enough to Mmamoriri to offer any counselling anyway. Oh and by the way, she actually has a deep er roar than the all other pride males. Very butch dear! Totally enjoyed my ‘live’ appearance on the EWN Facebook page this week. Sorry for the slight technical difficulties. Mind you it was Friday 13 and Mallorca was in the throes of an approaching tornado. (Leapy’s law!) Perhaps if there is a next time it will be a little more trouble free. THIS summer, an exam board was forced to defend a GCSE maths question involving calorie counting after being criticised on social media for causing distress to pupils with eating disorders. Another because an excerpt from an unseen text was taken from a classic book involving rape though the passage in question made no reference to the rape. Is it April 1 again, already? Can this be serious? Are children to be so protected that they can’t be presented with innocu ous reallife scenarios? Neither anorexia nor rape should be treated lightly, but encouraging young people to collapse in a heap at a mere hint of life’s unpleasantness is absurdly counterproductive. But nowadays every thing upsets somebody apparently. Next we’ll be told they can’t answer questions about the witch craze in history in case it upsets Wiccans. Or Dick Turpin
OVER SENSITIVE: Can students no longer be presented with innocuous reallife scenarios? because of the evident masculine focus of his name and the fact he was a highway man and not a highwayperson. Chem istry: no noble gases, because that’s elitist. Presumably, too, we’ll ban history, as it’s about wars and dead people; Geogra phy as it might mention tsunamis and people drowning; Maths as it tells you that you can’t calculate the last digit of pi. It’s almost the same as the university stu dents studying biology etc who demand trigger warnings if part of the course in volves seeing dead bodies. I’m sure most would have no problem. It’s only the at tention seekers who make a fuss. If they’re that sensitive, why apply to study subjects like biology? When will it all end? And to think that, 75 years ago, ‘kids’ of around the same age were storming
beaches in northern France under heavy artillery to liberate Europe from Nazi rule. Could there be another ‘story’ that more starkly illustrates the total antithesis be tween those brave souls and the inverte brates of today? Perhaps newspapers should place a trigger warning above these ‘offended’ / ‘feeling hurt’ stories. Maybe something like: ‘Warning! The following is unsuitable for older readers. NICK HORNE’S Rich Pick Freelance correspondent, London, England ONE million euros a week looks a lot like this, but do add on expenses. Fuel, food and beverages, plus of course tips. Built as a family yacht for pleasure but with an eye to the charter mar ket where the Superyacht SOLANGE commands a fee that starts at €1 mil lion per week. At 85.1 metres length overall and a beam of 13.8 metres the yacht has extraordinary volume. Interior designer Aileen Rodriquez remarked when the yacht was deliv ered: “The unique mix of rare and striking materials gives the yacht its ultimate look and luxurious style.” The main entrance is dominated by the Tree of Life, a glass sculpture rising some 16 metres from the tank deck to the bridge deck, though the staircase winding round the lighted glass column where more than 1,200 points of light suggest tropical rain and coloured glass flowers bloom. Toys and entertainments; a cine ma is almost expected on a supery acht and so yes it’s no surprise to find one. However, the cinema is re ally luxurious, so is the fabulous day head conveniently close to it. Spread across the six vast decks there is also
a removable sundeck dance floor with a console for a DJ and disco, lights and all. A hot tub or jacuzzi is also expected and SOLANDGE has two hot tubs and, to top it all, a six metre pool on the bridge deck aft equipped with a jet stream to swim against. Besides which is a chro matherapy spa with hammam and massage room.
There is a galley tasked to create culinary delights, there are numerous deck spaces close by and open to the sea, which bring guests into more inti mate contact with the elements. SOLANDGE sleeps 12 guests in seven staterooms including a master deck featuring 180 degree windows and private deck with a spa pool. While each of the cabins has its own unique colour scheme the deco ration of each room reflects the opu lence found throughout SOLANDGE. Handmade Italian furniture and high ly intricate stonework, mother of pearl inlays ensures that everyone on board is able to sleep in absolute luxury. Waking or sleeping, at rest or at play, 29 crew ensure that every care is taken of up to 12 guests whether at sea, in shore at anchor or calling at marinas around the Mediterranean. A WORD of warning to anybody who rings the 11840 number for information about trains. Don’t! I am planning to travel from Xativa (Valencia) to Alicante later this week but then the Gota Fria arrived, affecting trains in Murcia. Murcia comes into it because the train I usu ally take finishes there and so does the train I re turn on. After repeatedly being put on hold by Renfe’s 912 320 320helpline I decided to ring the 11840 number I found in Google and appeared to be an alternative Renfe helpline. I’ve no idea if it is, but it costs €3 a minute al though being in a hurry I thought it would be worth it. It wasn’t: I got through to an operator with a strong South American accent who had never heard of Xativa and when she finally got the message said as far as she could see all was well. Even I knew that was wrong and told her so. I tried the Renfe number again and this time waited and waited. And waited. It was worth it and cost me nothing be cause the operator told me the time of the only train to Alicante that evening. It took time, but at least it cost me nothing. Name and address supplied

I did not know that the EU occupies over 45 buildings. I did not know that the EU Parliament spends €150 million a year moving to Strasbourg every month for fourday committee meetings. I did not know that the EU has had a huge luxury shopping centre built in Brussels for ex clusive use of EU employees. I did not know that the EU had been financ ing the mass movement of industries from the UK to mainland Europe. POOR old Spain. A long hot summer has just finished. With the sunny dry weather came a seemingly non-stop string of forest fires. As tens of thousands of hectares burned and thousands of people were evacuated, people affected could be forgiven for wishing for a touch of rain and cooler weather. What they got however, was much more than they would have wanted. The so-called ‘Gota Fria’ or ‘cold drop’ came rolling in across swathes of eastern Spain. Once more thousands of people had to be evacuated as rivers burst their banks, people were trapped on rooftops and some 300,000 hectares of citrus and other crops destroyed. While the fires that raged across Spain brought destruction, worry and distress, at least there was the sense that something could be done against them. The thousands of firefighters and military personnel mobilised had great success in protecting life and property with, in the end, relatively few people directly affected by the flames. But there was no escaping the Gota Fria - the worst in 140 years. Those same emergency services now had a different task. But what they could do was limited. They could help with the evacuations and with the clean-up afterwards, but there was precious little they could do to hold the waters back. Even then, there is little doubt that without their efforts there could have been significant loss of life. So thank you to the emergency services from all of us. Yet again, we owe you.

B12 deficiency - are you missing the signs? VITAMIN B12 is an essential nutrient that the human body requires to function properly. It is crucial for making DNA and red blood cells and support ing the nervous system. If some body suffers from a deficiency in this vitamin, they can develop a range of worrying symptoms and without treatment, they could become seriously ill. Deficiency can either be diet related or, more commonly, a malabsorption issue. Deficiency is thought to affect around six million people in the UK. Unfortunately, symptoms of a vitamin B12 deficiency can take years to show up, and diagnosing it can be complex. A B12 defi ciency can sometimes be mistak

Vitamin B12 defi ciency symptoms may include: • Strange sensations, numb ness, or tingling in the hands, legs, or feet • Difficulty walking (stagger ing, balance problems) • Anaemia • A swollen, inflamed tongue • Difficulty thinking and rea soning (cognitive difficulties), or memory loss • Weakness • Fatigue While an experienced physi cian may notice the symptoms and be able to detect a vitamin B12 deficiency with a good in terview and physical examina tion, a blood test is needed to
confirm the condition. As vitamin B12 is primarily found in animal based foods (meat, milk, eggs, fish and cheese) so if you are a vegetari an or a vegan, you could develop a deficiency. More commonly though, deficiency is nondiet re lated. It is found in older people, those with digestive illnesses (like Crohn’s or coeliac disease) and autoimmune diseases like pernicious anaemia. Early detec tion and treatment are impor tant. If left untreated, the defi ciency can cause severe neurological symptoms. Treatment of B12 deficiency is usually injections every month (of Cyanocobalamin in Spain) or every three months (of Hydroxo cobalamin in the UK).

The Spanish Group of Can cer Patients (GEPAC) said whilst eating a healthy diet is obviously beneficial for health in general, there is no such thing as an ‘anticancer diet.’ GEPAC compiled a docu ment listing over 70 false myths relating to foods that are claimed to have anti cancer properties. These include: Soybeans. An excellent source of protein, soy con tains several phytochemi cals, which are chemical compounds naturally occur ring in plants. Some of these have a slight estrogenic role in animal studies that seemed to offer protection against tumours that de pend on hormones. However, at present there is little information to demon strate that soy supplements can reduce the risk or have a protec tive effect against the develop ment of tumours in humans.

Wean yourself off the addiction MANY experts now believe sugar is just as deadly an addiction as drink and drugs, with many people consuming far too much. Whilst it may be easier to lay off the sweets and chocolate, nutrition ists say it is the hidden sugar in foods that catch people un aware such as in premade pasta sauces and baked beans. So what can you do to help wean yourself off sugar? Try and keep your blood sugar balanced and avoid low blood sugar that will make you want to go and get something sweet for a quick fix, eat smaller amounts more regularly. Don’t go longer than three hours without eating, espe cially women, or your blood sugar levels will drop too low and your body will give you a craving for something sweet. Weaning yourself off sugar can be easier for some than others. Some may prefer to go cold turkey, oth
ers gradually reduce it. First, after re moving from the house the obvious sources, such as chocolates and cakes, it is recommended to take out of your diet all the savoury foods that contain added sugar. Savoury foods such as sauces like Dolmio, which changed its packaging to show the sugar con tent, contain added sugar so look for
healthier or homemade versions to re move this added sugar. Other foods deemed healthier such as yoghurts and cereal bars can also contain high levels of sugar so check the labels. Next, stop adding sugar to your hot drinks and other foods such as cereal. Checking the package of your cereal will show you there is already sugar in it. Detoxing from sugar can be difficult and it is normal to struggle with headaches, cravings, tiredness, spots and an upset stomach, but after the initial first few days your body will start to recali brate itself. Cutting out sugar can reprogramme your taste buds and can improve your body, mind and mood, helping you to sleep better, have brighter and clearer sight and be less stressed.

Thread lifts certainly produce visible changes, it also creates a more subtle and natural looking end result than facelift surgery. Clams a la marinera... BOWLER’S PRIVATE DINING CLAM is a common name for several kinds of bivalve molluscs. The word is often applied only to those that are edible and live as infauna, spending most of their lives halfway buried in the sand of the seafloor. Clams for me are one of the best seafood products on the Costa, easy to find in any fishmongers or supermarket. Clams a la Marinera is a delicious and easy tapa recipe, a simple dish made fresh, cooked in a white wine, onion and garlic sauce, you can even add a little chilli if you like a little spice... great for

CLAMS A LA MARINERA: A delicious and easy tapa recipe. Ingredients 2 lbs medium clams (cleaned) 1 large yellow onion, finely chopped 8 oz white wine Olive oil 2 tbsp flour Pinch of pepper Pinch of salt 2 cloves garlic, sliced 1 lemon 1 bay leaf 1 tablespoon tomato paste Tbsp flat leaf parsley, finely chopped Method Add the clams to a bowl and add two table spoons of salt and cover with water, and set
aside for about one hour, this will release any grit inside the clams. Chop the onion and slice garlic. In a large frying pan, add a drizzle of olive oil. When it is hot, add in chopped onion and sauté until they turn golden. Add two tbsp of flour, the pepper, and a clove of garlic. Once every thing has turned a golden colour, add a 1/2 cup of water, white wine and the tomato paste. Add three slices of lemon and season well, Cook for two to three minutes more. Pour the onion mixture into the saucepan with the clams. Cook on low until the sauce thickens, stirring often for about four minutes. When cooked, add your parsley and serve in bowls and serve hot. You can serve with a crisp baguette or slices of pitta bread.

Fiat 500X 1.3 Sport 2019 FIAT’S 500 range has quickly cemented itself as one of the most popular small car ranges available, with funky looks, attainable price tags and a range of options. However the Italian mar que are not resting on their laurels with the launch of a new member to the 500 family. As the larger, family friendly 500X turns five this year, and with a slew of ri vals biting at its heels, Fiat has brought to the table a sportier and more aggres sive Sport version of the popular compact. Whilst stopping short of an allout performance car like the Abarth range, they have however gone further than just adding new stock ers and a higher price. As well as new bodywork and improved engine perfor mance, the most important
difference is the specially tuned chassis components. The suspension has been stiffened by 10 per cent and a 13mm reduction in ride height compared to stan dard models, giving the car a more purposeful look and a more planted riding feel. The power steering has been remapped for a sharp er feel and an optional 19 inch wheel package makes for an incredibly well han dling car. Visually the designers have created an appealing package, with dark grey headlights, body coloured side skirts and a large rear diffuser hugging a dual chrome exhaust differentiat ing the Sport from the stan dard 500X. The interior follows much the same direction too, with sporty Alcantara steering wheel, a dark roof lining and tasteful grey detailing on the dash. The new model comes
with either a 118bhp 1.0 litre threecylinder or 148bhp 1.3litre four cylinder petrol engine, the latter offered exclusively with a sixspeed dualclutch automatic gearbox with pad dle shifters. Torque figures sit at 199lb ft from 1850rpm, which gives the car an exciting mid range whilst the adapted steering and the feather like throttle response all add to the car’s sporty feel. Interior spec is what you would expect from a modern compact, a seveninch info tainment screen gives all the usual functions and is Apple Play and Android Auto com patible. Ambient lighting, keyless entry and trim options are available options to add to the appeal of the new sporty model. Prices start at £16,235 for the 1.0 litre version, climb ing to £24,700 for the 1.3 range topper.

ROAD TEST by Nick Fletcher THE latest Mazda3 brings a more sporty look to the often rather staid hatchback sector, and a new range of engines and cabin upgrades also helps gives the model a distinct edge in the toughest market sector. Also available in saloon form, the Mazda3 starts at €22,701 (£20,595)
Mazda3 Sport Lux and there are petrol, diesel and mild hybrid options, along with manual and auto gearboxes. With its low road stance, sleek body, wide front grille and narrow headlights, the car has strong visual presence in a sector which includes the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf. My test model was a mid-
range Sport Lux version, priced at €25,126 (£22,795) with a 120 hp 2.0-litre petrol engine and six-speed manual gearbox. That combination delivers a crisp 0-100 kph time of 10.4 seconds, top speed of 196 kph (122 mph) and average fuel economy of 16.1 kpl (45.6 mpg). Emissions are 117 g/km. First driving impres-
sion is the car is very smooth and quiet. The suspension is a little firmer than many in the class, but that does enable the Mazda3 to corner with minimal lean and reassuring composure. On urban roads, the suspension set-up still provides a comfortable ride and only on rougher surfaces will you notice any mild vibration. The car is neatly and simply designed and the slightly understated appearance enhances the quality ambience. Mazda says the cabin design is ‘human-centric,’ which I think means the
main emphasis was on making everything easy to use! Despite the sloping roofline towards the rear, there is still adequate headroom in the back and while the boot space of 351 litres is not the biggest in the sector, it meets normal everyday requirements and the rear seats do fold down for larger loads. The rear styling of the Mazda3 is very eye-catching with discreet spoiler, wide tail-lights and twin exhausts. The narrow rear screen does restrict the view when reversing, but all models have reversing sen-

sors and many have a rearview camera. Other features on the test model include adaptive LED headlights, sat-nav, connectivity including smartphone mirroring, adaptive cruise control and dual-zone air-conditioning. Safety kit includes blindspot monitoring, auto-emergency city braking and a head-up display which projects key driving information onto the windscreen so you don’t have to take your eyes off the road. The Mazda3 impresses as a great overall package which will tick all the must-have boxes of most potential buyers and its cool new look also delivers an alluring visual cachet.
