BREXIT PROTESTS By Dilip Kuner ANTI-BREXIT demonstrations are set to hit the streets of Gibraltar as the Andalucian government prepares for a no deal scenario. The Socio-Cultural Association of Spanish Workers in Gibraltar (ASCTEG), which supports Spanish workers in the area has called for a demo on October 19. The association is demanding specific measures to help workers in the La Linea area if a hard Brexit happens. Juan José Uceda, spokesman for Ascteg, hopes to involve institutions, groups, associations and a large number of ordinary people. He said: “Until that date we will have to do great things to get the message across to frontier workers, to the Gibraltar authorities, to the whole of La Linea and part of the region to try to make a big demonstration.” Uceda explained that one of the main reasons for calling this demonstration is the “total abandonment” of the workers by central government. “Nothing is ever done here.” Meanwhile the Junta de Andalucia regional government’s Minister of Economy Rogelio Velasco has calculated that the financial cost to the region of Brexit could be anywhere between €500

Some 15,000 workers pass through Gibraltar’s border with La Linea daily, of which 10,000 are Spanish, some 3,000 are EU citizens and the rest from countries outside the EU. With a no deal Brexit the border would change status. In theory, the police would have to review the passports of this legion of workers, which would lead to huge hold-ups.
The plan of action which the regional government has drawn up has a total of 50 measures paying special attention to the Campo de Gibraltar area.
The draft plan will be submitted to the Andalucian Executive for comment and approval in the coming weeks, according to Velasco.
