Sex crimes increase THE latest crime statistics from the Ministry of the Interior show that the number of crimes with a sexual motive in Alicante Province have increased in the first half of this year, up around 20 per cent. According to this data, it is in the province of Alicante where sexual assaults have increased the most. During the first six months of the year, 831 complaints were filed for sexually motivated crimes throughout the Valencian Community - 328 cases occurred in the province of Alicante with an increase of 21 per cent (42 of them for rape, 20 per cent more than last year), 423 in Valencia with an increase of 17.5 per cent, while the number of rapes remained at 37 cases. Finally in Castellón, the increase was 5.3 per cent with 80 cases, of which seven were rapes. FIGURES: The number of sexual assaults has increased substantially this year in the region.
OWING to climate change, Alicante had more rain than usual over the last year. Some areas tripled their usual rainfall during the last Agricultural Year between September 2018 and August 2019. The Marina Alta and part of inland El Comtat, which both routinely have higher than usual rainfall, registered more than 500 millimetres, the Valen-

‘Triumph’ for bullfight enthusiasts BULLFIGHTS returned to Villena, five years after the last was held during the 2014 fiestas. Los Verdes (Greens) banned them after they won the 2015 municipal elections, but the town hall is now controlled by the PSOE socialists who lifted the veto earlier this month. More than 300 protesters gathered outside Villena’s bullring on the afternoon of the first fight, responding to a call from Villena’s MovimentoAntitaurino y Animalista anti-bullfight association. A NEWBORN baby’s body has been found in a rubbish bin in Alicante. A local man found the body around 8pm on Monday in General Elizaicín Street, in the Carolinas neighbourhood near the Provincial Archaeological Museum. The baby is believed to have been dead for several hours. The body was cold and still had

Years of abuse THE Provincial Prosecutor’s Office of Valencia has sentenced a man to 10 years and 10 months in prison for sexual assault, threats and coercion against his wife during the 20 years they were married. The trial began on Monday and, according to the indictment of the Public Ministry, the defendant, an Algerian citizen, subjected his wife ‘to all kinds of abuse’ during their marriage. The victim told the court that she was subjected to insults, threats and forced to have sex by her husband and that he once even urinated on his wife. Even after initiating the divorce process in February 2016, the accused forced her to have sex and harassed her ‘constantly,’ forcing her to change her mobile phone twice and remove her profile from social networks.

A COUPLE who had their premature baby unexpectedly during a holiday in Benidorm have been offered a place to stay by a kind-hearted stranger. Shannon Holbrook gave birth to her daughter, Scarlett, while staying in the resort and since then have reportedly been moved from hotel to apartment by their insurance company. Natalie Gallagher who owns a house in El Campello has invited the couple to stay there and care for baby Scarlett until she is ready to fly home in mid-October. The house is only 10 minutes from the hospital where Scarlett is being cared for and Scarlett herself is said to be doing well, even though she has had some breathing difficulties. A GoFundMe page was set up to help the family cover the costs whilst stranded in Spain and the couple have thanked people who have donated.

Man left in coma after fight FOUR young people have been arrested in Calpe for their involvement in a fight that left one man seriously injured and in a coma for several days. The fight took place at around 5am on August 27 on the Paseo Marítimo and the victim was punched several times in the head and left unconscious, according to witnesses. The four assailants, one 21-year-old Spaniard, one 19-yearold Moroccan, one 19year-old Romanian and a 23-year-old Ukranian have been released on bail by the authorities although will be expected to appear in court. Some of those involved have a police record for similar crimes, one is suspected of participating in a homicide that occurred near a pub in Jalon, where after a fight, a young man from Vilallonga lost his life as a result of the injuries suffered. The victim was taken by ambulance to Denia Hospital where he was admitted to intensive care in a coma. He has now recovered and has been released from the hospital.
BARRACKS: In need of a facelift.
Barracks in disrepair THE Association of the Guardia Civil (AEGC) has complained about the poor state of the Javea barracks. The building reportedly has cables hanging everywhere, damp climbing up the walls and flakes of paint hanging off the walls and cracks running up the building. There is also poor access for disabled people as there is no railing on the entry ramp. The building is deemed dangerous as bits of the walls fall down and could injure someone reporting to the police station.
A RECORD number of passengers have been recorded using the night tram service this summer. More than 83,000 people used the TRAM d’Alacant Tramnochador and the Mussol de Les Marines provided to transport late night revellers. The two special services of

Night services have been offered for a total of 19 days with the busiest night being August when 6,177 people travelled. The busiest station was the Mercado station where 24,922, boarded. The total number of passengers throughout the period was 83,113 travellers this summer
compared to 82,941 in 2018. These special services are part of the initiatives proposed by the Ministry of Territorial Policy, Public Works and Mobility that aim to increase the supply of the usual service provided by TRAM d’Alacant and Metrovalencia. In this way, FGV has served the main leisure and entertainment areas of the city of Alicante and other areas and municipalities that people usually go to during summer nights.

Wedding scammer A WEDDING planner who has scammed people out of their money has been pictured relaxing on holiday in Benidorm. Dana Twindale, who owns her own events company in the UK, has been accused of taking money from couples and ruining their weddings by not delivering. She is also accused of stealing £10,000 from her ex-partner. A fellow guest at the resort took the picture and sent it over to the ex-partner who confirmed it was of Twindale. Couples have accused the wedding planner of taking money for decorations and as deposits for a marquee before disappearing and refusing to answer the phone. A Facebook has been set up by the victims of the scam which has over 800 members.
Lots of bottle needed THREE newborn kittens were rescued after they were heard crying in a communal rubbish container in Novelda. Had they not been discovered they would have died within hours, said the animal protection association Adoptamics, whose volunteers are now looking after them. The kittens will have to be bottle fed every three or four hours for the next month and the association has put out a call for foster homes entitled ‘Can you lend a paw?’ on their social media pages.
Child, 4, abandoned A MAN has been arrested in Alicante for allegedly leaving his four-year-old son alone in a hotel room to go out for drinks. The father went to the police station to report the disappearance of the child after returning to the room at 7am. The police had spent hours looking for the man having taken the child from the hotel where he was found wandering naked through
the hotel’s car park. The man was sentenced to a suspended sentence of six months on the basis that he does not commit another crime and he is prevented from caring for the child for 32 months. The child was taken to the health centre for a check-up and was deemed perfectly healthy and is now being cared for at a children’s home in Valencia.

POLICE continue with the investigation to try to determine the identity of the woman found dead on Saturday night in Benidorm, the woman found had no documentation or ID of any kind. Officers of the National Police, Benidorm are currently in charge of the investigation since the finding of a woman’s body in the area of Punta Llisera after searching through the cliff edge, to clarify whether it is an accident, a suicide or a criminal death. The victim is a woman of approximately 30 years old. According to police sources, identity is unknown due to lack of identification. Investigators believe her location points to the

15,000 people t THE ‘Benidorm Pride Festival’ which ran from last Monday to the weekend, has been hailed a huge success with over 15,000 people going along to join the celebrations. Throughout the week there were all kinds of parties and shows to showcase the local talent with British people making up the majority of the participants. The organisers, Jeff Gartland and Santos Torres, highlighted the Benidorm Pride Festival began with just over 300 attendees and now in its ninth year welcomed over 15,000 people. They also highlighted the evolution in terms of nationalities: “We have gone from a ratio of 9010 in favour of attendees of other nationalities to a 60-40. Spaniards come more and more, but in the percentage of visitors from outside the British account for 70 per cent.”

MENACE : Wasps choose green almonds.
Another threat for almonds A PLAGUE could destroy 60 per cent of the inland almond crop. This time it is not the Xylella Fastidiosa bacterium but avispillas (almond seed wasps) which lay their eggs inside green, developing almonds. They were first detected in Biar two years ago and spread to Castalla, Onil, Sax and Villena but following preventative measures, the wasps have not
reached the Medio Vinalopo and the authorities are confident they have been contained. The larvae growing inside the fruit are hard to detect until the almonds are picked and last year 40 per cent of the production in Foia de Castalla and Alto Vinalopo was lost in this way. All infected almonds, including those that are mummified on the tree, must be burnt on
THE regional government, the Generalitat, has discarded plans to improve the CV-70 between Benidorm and Alcoy. This would have impacted negatively on the environment, the Public Works department said. The project proposed by a previous Partido Popular regional government would have cost between €120 and €150 million and cut the 70-minute, 50-kilometre drive by about 25 minutes. Many municipalities connected by the road were frustrated by the Public Works department’s decision, maintaining that the improvements would have put the Costa Blanca within easy

Put it to the people ALTEA AMB TRELLAT, an opposition party on Altea Council, called for a debate on a possible tourism tax. The party has added an amendment to a Partido Popular proposal regarding the tax and called for the Compromis-PSOE coalition at the town hall to let the local population and tourism sector decide whether it should be introduced. “It’s obvious that there is a lot of discussion about the tax,” said Anna Alvado, Altea amb Trellat spokeswoman. “Detractors claim that amongst other things im-
plementing the tax would reduce Altea’s competitiveness compared with other destinations,” she pointed out. “On the other hand those who are in favour believe that this is a quick and inexpensive way of increasing income which could be invested in sustainability.” Her amendment now has the support of Compromis and the PSOE and Alvado thanked both parties for backing her initiative that would involve the local population in any decision regarding the tourist tax. Although the mayors of Benidorm, Callosa and Guadalest amongst others regretted the decision, Alcoy’s mayor Toni Frances was less disappointed. “The previous PP government admitted in private that the project was practically inviable owing to its cost,” he said, adding that while improvements needed to be carried out they should be environment-friendly.

DESIGN CAPITAL: Managed to beat off the competition to claim the title.
Valencia takes top world title THE World Design Organisation (WDO) has designated Valencia as World Design Capital in 2022. The Spanish city managed to beat off its competition in Bangalore, India, to claim the title. The capital must serve to “break barriers” and act as a “megaphone” of the good work of Valencian design, both the past (as the old channel of the Turia) and the present (Bombas Gens), according to Xavi Calvo, strategic director of Valencia World Design Capital 2022 (WDC2022). Satisfied with the road travelled so far, Calvo did not hide his joy with the international recognition. In a video conference call with the association, the general secretary of the WDO, Bertrand Drome, communicated the decision of the committee in which the ‘precision, rigour and professionalism’ of the Valencia proposal has been valued throughout the process, as well as the
‘cohesion and strength’ of the sector. The WDO conducted a two-day visit to Valencia in which the committee held working meetings with the promoters of the candidacy and institutional meetings at the highest level. In this visit, the jury was pleasantly surprised that the city refurbishes heritage buildings from the past to make use of them today such as the Convent Carme. Valencia World Design Capital 2022 is a reality and now it is time to put the programme, entitled ‘Valencia’s Mediterranean Design,’ into action. Valencia will take over from Lille 2020 in a recognition held by Helsinki, Seoul, Tapei and Mexico, among other cities.
Squatters Evicted HOMEOWNERS in a Denia urbanisation have finally been rewarded with the eviction of local gypsies squatting in the apartments close to where t h e y l i v e f o l l o w i n g a f i v e - y e a r, a l legedly violent reoccurring take-over by gypsies and ‘drug addicts.’ Denia court has now ordered the illegal occupants out of the Mirador Monte Pedrera apartments, on the northern slopes of the Montgo mountain, with immediate effect. At least 24 of the 64 apartments at the luxury apartment block have been
illegally occupied while squatters access water and electricity without having to pay, while owners close by have had to suffer their presence over the past five years. It comes after a series of press stories shone a light on the ‘takeover’ that left expats and locals living in fear for their lives, with thieves becoming a rising problem in the area, usage of drugs in and around the illegally occupied apartments and an unsightly appearance to the area.

ALMOST 100 local Freemasons and their guests attended the Garden Party and Hog Roast on Saturday at the home of Javea Lodge number 40’s Worshipful Master Nigel Parker and his wife Susie. After some fabulous food, music was provided by local band, Diamond Jack, complete with Javea 40’s very own Geoff Britton, the ex-Wings drummer. The event was organised to support local charity Todos Juntos Javea as well as the Javea Autism Association that needs to raise €1,000 to buy equipment for its multi-sensorial room. This room will enable the children to interact better through stimulation of their own senses using a variety of media. From ticket sales, a raffle, donations and an auction the lodge raised an impressive €1,609. As an added bonus, the Provincial Grand Master said that he would increase this total to €2,000. CHARITY SHOP: Now in a new location. MARTA BANULS, the Javea Port councillor has opened the new Roundabout charity shop in Javea Port. The shop has moved from near Bar Rafa, to this great new location opposite the school, just off the roundabout between the Barco roundabout and the Dolphin roundabout. The shop is much bigger and aims to offer a more modern charity shop with professional displays and attractive fittings. The shop handles clothes and shoes for women, children and men as well as home furnishings. The
shop also does a sale or return scheme for clothes. Sometimes these clothes have never been worn and are the height of fashion. There are also books and CDs. A coffee area to browse these at your leisure has been prepared with chairs to sit upon, quietly screened off from the hubbub of the shop. Volunteers are always welcome to work in the shop. Roundabout charity shop does not support a specific charity. It raises money to help many charities. On behalf of the Red Cross, Maica Aranda and Alberto Teneiro received a cheque at the opening for some
new computers for their ambulance service. Earlier in the year, Javea social services received some money to fund school books and meals for poor children. Civil Protection volunteers received some new radios after their old ones were damaged in the floods at Easter. Amigos Europeas received a new ambulance and La Pedrera Hospital in Denia received some new medical gowns.
THE Save My Life 3 event will take place on September 29 to raise money for abandoned dogs. The event will feature live music and entertainment throughout the evening and hopes are high after the last two events raised over €25,000 for charity.
Paella day A FABULOUS event has been planned for the World Paella Day by the council of l’Alfas del Pi in which foreigners compete to teach the crowds what a paella is like for them. The event will take place on September 29.
Students asked to share cars to reduce traffic jams CAR SHARE schemes are being encouraged to cut traffic jams as schools reopen for the new term. Students at the private Lady Elizabeth International School in Benitachell, which has more than 1,000 pupils and 200 staff, are being asked to share car journeys to reduce road congestion. The local authority says traffic management collapses in the Poble Nou area when the schools return after the summer break Council officials are now working with the school to find a solution to the traffic jams that build up every morning at rush hour. In August, the councillor for Education, Jorge Pascual, and the mayor of Public Safety, María José Ivars, held a meeting with the director of the school to find a solution. Long term plans include building three roundabouts and a parking lot on the Xàbia road.
In the short term, the school is considering staggered start times for pupils and organising groups of students who live in the same neighbourhoods to share cars and to increase the number of school buses. Miguel Ángel García, mayor of Poble Nou de Benitachell, assured that the council will lead the way in solving the problem but asked that residents and pupils play their part. He said: “It is essential to car-
ry out a global mobility plan and aim for our municipality to overcome these problems. The city council will lead, of course, that search for solutions. “In fact, the Provincial Council has already authorised the roundabout project that will decongest traffic. “But it is important that everyone, including residents of areas that suffer an abnormal volume of traffic, collaborate and work together.”

The Welsh party Plaid Cymru has made the call to prevent Boris Johnson by-passing the vote by Parliament to prevent the UK leaving Europe without a deal. A UK Prime Minister has never been successfully impeached, but Mr Johnson was among those who called for Tony Blair to be impeached in 2004. Impeachment would allow Parliament to bring a Prime Minister to trial for high treason if he refuses to abide by the will of Parliament. The impeachment proposal was put forward by Plaid Cymru’s Westminster leader Liz Saville Roberts. She said: “Boris Johnson has already driven a bulldozer through the constitution so no longer are ideas like impeachment farfetched.”

At the same time, Mr Johnson was meeting with the Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar in a bid to break the ‘back stop’ deadlock. The Taoiseach invited Boris Johnson for talks for the first time since he took the Downing Street job. Mr Vardakar warned the UK Prime Minister that there was ‘no such thing’ as a clean break with the EU, but Mr Johnson said a no-deal would be a failure that the Irish Government would bear responsibility for as well as the British Government. The back stop is a mechanism to avoid a hard Irish border. Mr Johnson has said he will not sign a deal that includes the back stop, but will never introduce checks at the Northern Ireland border.

Internal injuries A BRITISH woman has been injured on a water slide at Aqualandia in Benidorm after going on the VertiGo slide. Monu Bhagat, 38, was on holiday in Benidorm with her husband and two children when they visited the water park. When the mother went on the slide she suffered an internal injury as water was forced inside her at force. She says that she had followed the instructions of the lifeguard who told her to cross her legs and arms but she still suffered an injury. When Monu came down the slide, blood was pouring down her legs and she was taken to the on-site medics who recommended that she get a taxi to the airport. At the hospital she received stitches for a 7cm tear to her uterus. Monu says that she is unsure what went wrong, but she is relieved that the injuries were not more serious and is now recovering.

Hitchhiker robbery A MAN has been arrested for allegedly stealing from a woman who offered to drive him to Alcoy. The assailant managed to convince the woman to give him a lift to Alcoy to visit his daughter and once the car was stopped at a traffic light
he pounced on her bag and stole more than €200. The woman had just left a betting shop and went to buy cigarettes, which is when the man spotted the cash in her purse. The victim made a complaint to the police and a 54-
year-old Spanish man was arrested based on the description the woman gave to police. The detainee has been accused of robbery with violence and has been placed in the custody of the Guard Court of Alcoy.

Javea beach growing THE popular beaches in Javea are growing in size due to the movement of sand and gravel. The tourists and residents have noticed that the beaches which have always been a mixture of sand, gravel and a few stones is now predominantly sandy. Much of the gravel that is on the beach has been carried to the shore by the floods that have recently hit Javea and the surrounding regions, but it seems that the sand is settling and covering the gravel. The Arenal beach is the only fully sand y b e a c h a n d takes the brunt of the tourism in the summer months.

Burglary spree ends in arrests in Calpe A GANG accused of a spate of burglaries have been arrested in Calpe. Officers of the Guardia Civil of Calpe have arrested three people as alleged perpetrators of several break-ins on five homes in the same urbanisation during August. The investigation was initiated after a car was stopped on the exit of Calpe by the Citizen Security Unit (USECIA). In this routine check, a vehicle and its occupants were identified and found to be carrying what were suspected to be stolen goods. The security unit checked records and found no complaints of the items having been stolen, so the group was allowed to go free. However, after several days, homeowners in the same urbanisation of Calpe, reported thefts from their homes and the missing items were linked to those found in the vehicle.

Finally, the Guardia Civil was able to determine the connection between the occupants of the vehicle and the thefts in the houses, so they proceeded to arrest the alleged perpetrators, who
are charged with a total of five robberies. The three detainees - two men and one woman - are reported by police to have a history of similar crimes. They
have been released from custody and will appear in court at a later date. Although the operation is closed, police have not ruled out the possibility of further arrests.

Blay Beach regeneration A MUNICIPAL delegation of Denia headed by the mayor, Vicent Grimalt, held a meeting in Alicante this week with the head of the provincial service of Costas, Rosa de los Rios to detail the projected measures that will be carried out on the coast of the Marina Alta. According to the mayor, they were studying a possible regeneration of Blay Beach, a stretch of beach on which the sea has swallowed the sand
and the waves hit the walls of the front line housing. Grimalt said Costas is analysing the economic cost of the project and the amount of sand that would need to be deposited there. However, he stressed that it would not be an imminent solution as work would most likely start next year. As for the regeneration projects in Deveses, Les Marines and La Marineta Cassiana, the mayor stressed that he did not give them start dates for the work to begin.

Despite their autonomous operations management, every regional service is fully incorporated into a unique and common Public National Health System, supplying a cohesive blood transfusion care to all citizens, residents, and visitors in Spain based on 100 per cent voluntary and non-remunerated blood donation. Anyone who has lived continuously in the UK between 1980 and 1996 (a minimum of one year) will not be able to donate blood in Spain due to the risk of transmitting mad cow disease. Similarly, there are restrictions if you have received a blood transfer in the UK. However, each region may have different rules about donation. Call the donation helpline on 935 573 500. Alternatively, visit www.donorsang.gencat.cat to find out if you are eligible. If you are eligible, you can give blood at your local hospital, or via the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja) at one of their clinics, or in one of their mobile units. You can check dates and locations by visiting www.donarsangre.org. A donor card is not necessary to give blood. On the first visit you will have to provide DNI, NIE, passport or a driving licence. If you are already registered in the Blood Bank, you only need a donor card or a document with your name and surname. The process of blood donation takes just 10 minutes in which 450 ml are collected (equating to 10 per cent of the total blood circulation of an adult person). Despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain blood is through the generosity of the public. The blood is carefully screened for disease to make sure it is safe. After a tattoo, you must wait four months to be eligible to donate. After surgery, the exclusion period will depend on the type of intervention. After minor surgical procedures, you cannot donate blood for seven days or until you are fully recovered. After undergoing major surgery, you will not be able to donate blood for four months. The rarest blood type is AB, present in 1 per cent of Caucasians, according to research by the America Red Cross. Blood transfusions are carried out daily in Spanish hospitals with more than 6,200 patients being given them, of whom almost a quarter are fighting cancer and a similar figure receiving transfusions during or after surgery. THE resident of Castellfort who died after being diagnosed with meningitis did not die as a result of a fox bite but was infected by listeria, although the case is not related to the outbreak in Andalucia, sources from the Ministry of Health have reported. At first, the same sources indicated that the man had died as a result of meningitis contracted after being bitten by a fox last weekend, but after verifying all of the information related to the case, have clarified that his death is not related to the bite of a wild animal. The patient was admitted to the ICU where his condition worsened and he eventually died. Although during the medical evaluation the patient and family reported that he had been bitten by a fox a few days before, it has been ruled out that it was the cause of the infection.

School refurbishment continues on opening CHILDREN at the Llebeig de Denia school have returned to an incomplete refurbishment project. Directors of the school have apologised to students and families that the building works that were due to be completed before the children returned is still underway. Both the mayor and the director of Llebeig, Luz María Martín, have given explanations to the families and stressed that this weekend the
municipal cleaning services has completed most of the interior works. On Friday the entrance to the school was still full of fences which were also removed over the weekend. Now the builders need to finish the new roof, finish changing the windowsills and paint the whole exterior of the school. These works will be done in the afternoons so as not to interfere with the children and their lessons.

Demolition on pirate island THE ‘pirate island’ of Benidorm - probably the last in the Mediterranean - could soon become an environmental interpretation centre if the central government complies with the request of the council to reconvert the facilities of the terrace restaurant that has been operating there without a licence for more than 50 years. If this municipal initiative were to materialise, it would be a paradoxical outcome as this bar currently contaminates the Mediterranean with spills. This unauthorised hotel activity, which inspired the term ‘pirate’ coined by a nautical business association, is still ‘coleando’ in the courts, since the owner of this establishment has raised several resources and
currently has a dispute pending in the National Court. This has revealed a parliamentary response of the Upper House to Senator Carles Mulet, who has criticised that the Executive of Pedro Sanchez does not enforce the law and has said that “it is a case more, but symptomatic, from where does a government capable of spending a billion on a useless project like Castor direct its efforts and ignore how the conservationist organisations denounce in their report Black Flags 2019, countless cases of pollution, mismanagement, tourism, destruction of dunes, presence of plastics, poor purification, human pressure and excessive urbanism.” In that same written communication from the Senate, Costas points out that the isle of Benidorm is part of the natural park of Serra Gelada and, conse-
quently, the competence to ensure compliance with specific regulations, as well as ‘the discharges to the sea that seem to be taking place from the aforementioned establishment,’ corresponds to the Generalitat Valenciana. While resolving the umpteenth court case between the individual and the central Administration or the council’s proposal not to reach the demolition, the order of the Provincial Coastal Service was ‘to remove all existing facilities on land in the maritime land public domain for restoration establishment (including terraces, stairs, cages, animal cages, and other facilities linked to this establishment), after eviction of natural or legal persons who exploit them.’ It was dictated in February of this year and gave three months for its execution.

Update the description of your Spanish property in the Land Property Registry for several reasons. The most frequent is that af ter buying property, some small work may be done, such as a barbecue, a storage room, a porch, etc, and due to the
low importance of the work it is decided to not update the description at the Land Reg istry. Another possibility could be that the previous owner made works that he / she had not de clared. Therefore, the descrip tion that exists in the registry is the old one, not including the new works carried out. Why is it necessary to up date the description in the Land Registry? The description at the Land Registry is the official and legal description. If you apply for a mortgage loan, the bank will request an appraisal, and in normal circumstances the sur veyor will require that the de scription is updated. On the other hand, if you are interested in selling your prop erty you should keep in mind that the potential buyer will usually always prefer to buy a
property that fulfils the legal requirements and the one which the land registry descrip tion matches with the physical one. Besides that, updating the description of the property means declaring the value of the work performed, which could, in certain cases, increase the original acquisition value of the property, and substantially reduce the amount of the capi tal gain tax to be paid for the sale. How can I update the de scription of my property in the land registry? The new works must be de clared by granting a public deed of declaration of new work before a notary. The declaration can be of new construction or old con struction. For the declaration of new work, the notary will request
the final act or certificate of the work, administrative authorisa tion to carry it out according to the urban planning legislation, and certificate made by an ar chitect that certifies that the description made suits the pro ject carried out, etc. On the other hand, when we talk about old construction, we mean works that were made years ago, and for which, even if they were illegal, or the ad ministration had not given au thorisation for its construction at the time, enough time has passed so that the administra tion has lost the possibility of initiating an administrative claim or process against it. For this type of declaration, we must have an architect cer tificate that proves the age of the work and the veracity of the new description, etc. In the Valencian Community this statute of limitations de
pends on whether the work was carried out before or after the entry into force of Law 5/2014, these terms being four and 15 years respectively. In either case, once we have obtained the necessary docu mentation, we can grant the public deed before the notary. To register the deed and up date the description of the reg istry, it will be necessary to pay the stamp duty tax, which for the Valencian Community, is 1.5 per cent of the declared value of the work. Straight through for ambulances SAMU ambulances will not, after all, be obliged to queue at motorway tollgates. The Ministry of Public Works announced not long ago that SAMU ambulances and police vehicles were not subject to motorway tolls. This caused more problems than it solved, obliging ambulance crews to queue at the tollbooths, call an employee and provide documentation proving that they were attending an emergency. SAMU ambulances are mobile intensive care units and are either transferring patients to hospital or are on their way to an emergency. The new motorway procedure has meant delays of up to
10 minutes in critical situations and the alternative of using main roads, particularly the N332, is too hazardous and time-consuming to be practical. Until the Ministry announcement the SAMU ambulances were fitted with devices that automatically paid the fee into the motorway concessionary’s bank account. The regional government’s Health department has now announced that the SAMU ambulances will again have the devices. “The way toll fees are recovered is something that the ambulance and motorway concessionaries will have to negotiate between them,” a Health department spokesman said.
Brexit prompted suicide A GLOUCESTERSHIRE coroner blamed a French mother’s death last March on worries over Brexit. France Marie-Louise Davis, who was 76, had lived in Britain with her British husband, 74, for more than 50 years. Although they were planning to move to France, Mrs Davies expressed “worries and anxieties” about the UK’s departure from the EU. Mrs Davies, who had a history of depression, had previously been treated for pneumonia and her mobility was affected, the court heard during the inquest. She walked out of her home in Tewkesbury (Gloucestershire) on March 18 this year and was never seen again. Earlier that day, she took the family pet to the vet’s but was brought home in a distressed state after it died. Her body was found two days later in a flooded field, nine days before the original March 29 Brexit day, the court heard. “This lady had a history of depression and low mood, she was anxious about Brexit and had recently lost a beloved family pet,” said senior Gloucestershire coroner Katie Skerret, returning a verdict of suicide by drowning.

New British Ambassador meets UK nationals THE new British Ambassador to Spain and Andorra, Hugh Elliott, met last week with members of three of the groups representing UK nationals in Spain: Bremain in Spain, Brexpats Hear our Voice and EuroCitizens. They discussed the issues affecting the more than 300,000 British citizens who have made Spain their home. Property prices continue to rise PROPERTY prices in Spain increased by average of 7.05 per cent in the first half of the year putting the typical price of a square metre at €2,363, according to the latest report by Grupo Tecnocasa and the Universidad Pompeu Fabra (UPF). The study also reveals that house price growth is no longer greatest in the country’s biggest cities. In fact in Barcelona property price rises in the first half of the year were generally below the national average. The Catalan capital nevertheless remains the most expensive place to acquire a home in Spain, with the price of a sqm standing at €3,190.

CALLE ESPERANTO in the centre of Benidorm will close and traffic diverted when it is resurfaced. A new network of waterpipes has been installed between Calle Gerona and Calle Orts Llorca, pavements have been replaced while new street lighting is due to be installed later this month, announced Public Works councillor Jose Ramon Gonzalez de Zarate. Calle Esperanto has been included in Benidorm’s uni-
versal accessibility and sustainability plan whose €2 million cost has been split between the town hall and the Diputacion provincial council, De Zarate said. He revealed that while Calle Esperanto is being resurfaced, the Orts Llorca stream will be linked to the Aiguera watercourse, solving the flooding problem at the lower end of Calle Orts Llorca which is routinely flooded during periods of torrential rain.

Albir - Alfaz NEWS EARLIER this year, Albir’s Villa Romana open-air museum featured in Villajoyosa’s Festum Alonis re-enactment fiestas. Both towns possess important Roman remains and were linked in the past when the Villa Romana belonged to the territorium of Allon, now known as Villajoyosa. The respective town halls are planning joint projects and Culture, Historic Heritage and Education councillors from Villajoyosa recently visited the Villa Romana to discuss future projects with their Alfaz counterparts.

Antonio Morcillo, responsible for the conservation and upkeep of the town’s natural spaces and interpretation centres like the Albir Lighthouse, put Arques and the councillors in the picture regarding work at the park. This included clearing scrub, eliminating invasive species and removing deadfalls as required by law to avoid forest fires.

Constructing the leisure area has given a social use to the unused area while creating yet another route inside the Sierra Helada that leads to the picnic zone, lookout and the climbing wall, Arques said.
After visiting La Cantera, the mayor went on to the Los Carrascos Environmental Centre (CIPM) where the Blue Flag now flies, making Alfaz the only Alicante Province municipality with three blue flags.

PAULA MORCILLO, a 15-year-old, recently came second in the junior category of Spain’s national Trap 5 Shooting Championships. This win automatically entitled Paula to compete in the Trap 5 World Championship that was held in Cheste (Valencia) the following week and where she came ninth in her category, putting her amongst the best 10 in the world. She was accompanied in Cheste by her parents, An-
tonio and Yolanda as well as Pepe Casiano from the Club de Tiro al Plato de Alfaz del Pi who commented that Paula carried out a series of spectacular shots, on some occasions shattering 20 of 25 released clay pigeons. That was even more impressive, Casiano added, considering that this was only Paula’s second official trapshooting competition and she had taken out her firearms licence only a few weeks before the Spanish championships.

Traditional balcony scene in the old town UNTIL September 30 Alfaz will again be hosting the Balconades open-air exhibition of artwork. This year sees the 21st edition of the Altea initiative where pictures by professional and amateur artists of all nationalities have been displayed on balconies and façades in the neighbouring town’s Old Quar-
ter throughout the summer. Once August was over the pictures were, as always, transferred to the centre of Alfaz where they can now be seen in Calle Federico Garcia Lorca, Calle Baldons, Calle Tinent Segui and Calle Ametler Amarg amongst others. In October, the pictures will be taken down and sent to the inland town
of Agost before they move on to Benimantell in November. Alfaz’s Culture councillor Manuel Casado, who visited the Balconades display accompanied by councillors and some of the artists responsible for the pictures, encouraged residents and visitors not to miss the exhibition before it moves on at the end of the month.
Jazz ushers in autumn season THE l’Alfas en Jazz festival continues until the end of this month, with performances on September 14 and 28. The festival is always the first in the Casa de Cultura’s autumn programme, which began with Aretha y Los Franklin who are followed this Saturday, September 14 with the Jeff Jerolamon Jazz Experience, a quartet with Jerolamon himself, Jesus Nuñez, Julio Fuster and Joan Vicens. Jerolamon currently teaches percussion at the Valencia City Conservatoire and during his 40-year career he has recorded with Junio Cook, Joe Henderson, Johnny
Griffin, Herb Ellis, Lee Konitz, Tete Montoliu and John Hicks. Jerolamon has also toured three times with the Count Basie Orchestra under the direction of Frank Foster. This year’s festival comes to an end on September 28 with Ximo Tebar, the Valencian guitarist who heads the Ximo Tebar Guitar Trio and whose disc ‘The jazz guitar trios,’ follows the traditions of the late Lou Benneett, Dr Lonnie Smith, Billy Brooks and Lou Donaldson. Free kayak outings
THE town hall’s Youth department and Hamacas Playa Albir again offered free kayak excursions this summer. The outings, which have been very popular since they were introduced eight years ago, gave young people aged between 16 and 35 the opportunity of exploring the marine reserve included in the Sierra Helada national park every Tuesday throughout July and August. The kayak excursions were limited to eight people for each excursion and 70 young people enjoyed the outings after registering with the Youth Information Centre (CIJA) in the Casa de Cultura, revealed Youth councillor Laura Sevilla.

Where will it come from ALTEA Council approved a motion to review the amounts allocated to the publicly-owned Municipal Development Company (PDM). These have not been brought up-to-to date since 2012 but the proposal to set aside another €500,000 was backed only by the Compromis-PSOE coalition. This increase meant that the town hall was investing 17 per cent of its budget on the cleaning and upkeep of Altea’s street, prompting criticism from the Alta amb Trellat opposition party. This would inevitably be passed on to householders whose rubbish collection bills would inevitably rise by 8 per cent, the party said, asking where the money would come from. Diego Zaragozi, the councillor responsible for the PDM admitted that, like all municipal cash, it would come from the taxpayer. At the same time Zaragozi insisted that the hike was necessary. Until now the PDM had ‘merely survived’ and it had not been possible to renew machinery because company workers had received a 10 per cent pay rise over the last seven years.

Work has begun in front of 42, Avenida Diputacion as well as Avenida de los Ejercitos Españoles at the crossroads with Calle Santamaria and Calle Polonia. “These traffic lights are going to improve road safety when crossing some of the town’s busiest streets,” said Calpe mayor Ana Sala. “They are also intended to encourage drivers to be more careful and always to respect speed limits,” Sala added.

Lost and found The family were astonished a few days ago to receive a call
from the Sociedad Protectora de Plantas y Animales in Alicante City, announcing that they had a dog whose chip showed Antonio as his owner. “My first reaction was to say they were mistaken but when they described him to me, I realised it was Lucas and I nearly fainted,” he said. Lucas was picked up after a member of the public, who saw him wandering the streets in northern Alicante City, rang the Protectora and the family still have no idea where he could have spent the last seven years. Antonio was not particularly worried when he left the bar to find that Lucas was gone as the dog came and went at will, but the worried family searched for him and put up posters when he failed to return the next day. They are certain now the little dog, who barely weighs three kilos, must have been stolen. Seven years older, fatter and now without teeth, Lucas is back in the family home.

Something to celebrate AS it has since 2004, the Associacio Cultural Amics de Teulada (ACAT) again organised this year’s Festa del Moscatell. The fiesta celebrating the locally-grown muscatel grapes is also a celebration of the Valencia region’s roots and culminated in a morning spent bringing in the grapes and the traditional scalding of the grapes destined for raisins. This was followed by a procession with carts and wagons loaded with the grapes taken for treading watched by young and old alike and fascinated tourists.

The women snip off damaged or marked grapes from the bunches now being harvested before they are packed and sent to Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Oviedo and Zaragoza. Teulada-Moraira has the best muscatel grapes in the world but they are also the most overlooked and the skill is dying out, lamented Maria Rosa as she and the other women worked in a Teulada warehouse. “The younger generation does not want to know. Grapes don’t pay well,” she said. “It would be fantastic if they fetched just half of the

ling’ the bunches and packing them involves a great deal of work,” Maria Rosa said. “These women start on the bunches at the end of August and their work will go on until the end of September. It needs skill and good taste.” The average age is high

because younger women are not interested, but Maria Rosa stressed that her team was completely integrated. “Teulada women who learnt from their mothers have now shown women from Colombia and Morocco. ‘Estisorar’ strengthens social bonds,” she declared.

In Moraira, the Cap d’Or primary school received 214 infants and primary pupils while Sant Vicent Ferrer school in Teulada now has 470. A total of 514 pupils enrolled at the Teulada-Moraira Instituto secondary school, of whom 404 are completing their compulsory ESO education.

Who paid what query THE Diputacion provincial council queried claims that the previous town hall endangered the Vuelta a España presentation. Teulada-Moraira’s Castillo on Moraira’s seafront was chosen for the formal presentation of teams competing in Spain’s most important cycle race at the end of 2018. The May 26 municipal elections produced a new local government, a Compromis-PSOE-Ciudadanos coalition who claimed that
their predecessors had committed to spending €90,000 on preparing the event. The town hall possessed neither the necessary equipment nor sufficient funds to cover the cost but, after talking with the organisers and the Diputacion, this was reduced to €25,000, announced Teulada-Moraira mayor Rosa Vila. Eduardo Dolon, who heads the Diputacion’s Presidency department maintained that Teulada-Moraira hosted the presentation
thanks only to the former local government. Instead of declaring that some things had been left undone, the current threeparty coalition should have seen that they were done, he said. “That is what the town hall is there for,” he added. “The presentation took place thanks to the Alicante Diputacion and the La Vuelta organisers who paid all that was originally agreed and which the town hall left unpaid,” Dolon insisted.

Rail project a step nearer THE contract to modernise and improve the Teulada-Gata section of the Line 9 train should be finalised within weeks. Arcadi España, head of the Generalitat’s Public Works and Transport department, confirmed the €18 million Teulada-Gata project during a recent visit to regional rail operator FGV’s train sheds in Campello. España was there to inspect the new electro-diesel trains which will cover the TRAM network’s Line 1 between Luceros in Alicante City and Benidorm as well as Line 3 between Luceros and Campello. Eventually, once Line 9 between Benidorm and Denia has been completely overhauled and modernised, these electro-diesel trains will be able to continue

In the past they were let off from the harbour breakwater, but this was banned five years ago following regional fire-prevention regulations, prohibiting fireworks within 500 metres of wooded areas. Owing to Javea port’s proximity to Montgo national park, the display has been relocated to three platforms off La Grava beach.
THE AEGC association representing Guardia Civil officers complained about the ‘deplorable’ state of Alicante Province’s headquarters. A statement drew specific attention to Javea, whose post it described as ‘battling dampness, loose cables, cracks and peeling stucco.’ All this was visible to members of public visiting the local post, continued the statement, which highlighted the building’s inaccessibility for those with mobility problems as its ramp was narrow and needed a handrail.

Those deadly dog-ends THREE years ago, an uncontrolled forest fire raged through Javea obliging thousands to evacuate their homes on 16 urbanisations. The fire in early September 2016 started just below t h e Pu i g d e la Llorença lookout at Cumbre del Sol in neighbouring Benitachell, but strong winds and extremely high temperatures fanned the flames which finally consumed 812 hectares of local land. Three years later vegetation has regenerated and although charred and unfelled pines still dot the steepest slopes where they cannot be reached, Granadella is flourishing once more.
But worryingly, the Puig de la Llorença lookout is littere d w ith cig are tte ends. The combination of meteo ro lo g ic a l co n d itio n s th a t a llo w e d th e fire to sweep through Javea and part of Benitachell are unlikely to be repeated this September. But as concerned resid e n ts p o in ted o u t, th e leth al co mb in atio n o f w e a th er co n d itio n s a n d human negligence will always be capable of sparking off a disastrous fire in future.

SPAIN’S ‘app economy’ has not stopped growing since the Apple App Store was launched in 2008. According to the latest technology data, jobs related to iOS apps have grown 26 per cent in Spain since 2016. In total, 77,000 direct and indirect jobs related to the App Store have been generated in the last 11 years. According to the data published by Ap ple, Spain ranks fifth in Europe in coun tries experiencing the greatest impact on their economy viaiOS apps.

Phone mast movement TELEFONICA is considering transfer ring thousands more mobile phone masts to its subsidiary Telxius in a bid to make it more attractive to in vestors. Telxius was set up to manage Telefonica’s mobile network infra structure as well as undersea cables and around 15,000 were initially handed over in Spain, the rest of Eu rope and Latin America. The company is part owned by US fund KKR (40 per cent) and by Pontegadea, the investment vehicle of Amancio Ortega (9.99 per cent).

Iberia, part of the IAG group, would automati cally lose the capacity to operate flights between two EU cities because more than 50 per cent of its shares would belong to a UK group, which would be a nonEU country. Iberia must restructure its shareholding so that more than half of its shares are held by an EUbased company, not by third countries, a requirement for being able to operate flights between two European Union cities.

Economy forging ahead HOUSEHOLD spending is helping Spain buck the Eurozone trend where the big economies are on the verge of recession. The region’s fourthlargest economy has outperformed the Eurozone’s average growth rate of five years. This was in the past on the back of exports growth, but now its consumers that are driving its growth. Gross domestic product is expected to rise in Spain by more than 2 per cent this year, compared with less than 0.5 per cent for Germany and just over 1 per cent for the Eurozone.

By Dilip Kuner THE number of ultrawealthy people in Spain has increased 74 per cent since 2011. That was the year that the country’s wealth tax was reintroduced, in the middle of the economic recession. Hacienda (Inland Revenue) figures for 2017 recently re leased show that 611 taxpay ers declared net assets of €30 million or more, com pared to the 352 who did so in 2011. When it comes to proper ty, the number of citizens who declared property worth more than €1.5 million grew 35 per cent to a total of 60,337 individuals. The wealth tax is highly controversial. It is paid on top of income or capital gains where an individual’s net assets are worth more than €700,000. Although it is a state levy the power has been de volved to the autonomous

A tax amnesty in 2012 un covered €40 billion that had been previously undeclared. Then in 2013 a new law was passed that forced indi viduals to declare their inter national assets or face a stiff fine. This uncovered €156 billion in assets that Spanish residents had abroad.
OVERALL recorded music revenues in Spain grew by 27 per cent in the first six months of this year to €140.7 million on physical and digital music, compared to €110.9 million in the first half of 2018.
Jobs threat REAL estate company Solvia, sold by Banco Sabadell last April to Swedish investment fund Intrum, has started an Employment Regulation File (ERE) that could see 201 out of 700 workers lose their jobs.

A political problem
CAN no one rid us of this turbulent blot? This whole Brexit debacle, which has, among other international embarrassments, made us the laughing stock of Europe, has actually achieved at least one positive result; it has finally revealed the true nature and motives of our so-called leaders. The whole fiasco has very little to do with the British public, and certainly no connection to our democracy. It is purely a battle royal between the privileged few. Arrogant elitists who, in the main, have no interest whatsoev er in how the public think or act, unless it somehow threatens their own selfcentered ambitions. These governmental manipulators, particu larly the remoaners, have shown us they will sink to just about any level to protect their vested interests. I also find it interesting in the way they are insisting Boris asks for a further extension. How can they be so sure that the EU will comply? On numerous occasions the EU leaders have told us they will in no way grant us more time. Could it be the ‘old boys’ club’ knows something we don’t? No whiff of possible collusion there surely? Heaven for bid we should suspect them of anything as
devious as that! Well, be that as it may, you can rest assured many among them have plenty to lose. Over the years dozens of MPs and peers have collectively received millions in EU subsidies. Fortyeight wealthy farmer/ landown ers claim 5.7 million a year from the EU. Over 30 former MEPs and offi cials in the House of Lords draw up to €500,000 a year in EU pensions. Many have tak en an oath of loyalty to the EU not to attack the old in stitution. (Yep!) Among them is the utterly useless Neil Kinnock (87,000 PA), Lord (Mandy) Mandelson (34,000 PA), Lord Tugendhat (41,000PA) and so on. Company leaders also put their narrow vested interests before the UK’s overall economic interests, mainly because they know they will have to pay more wages should we leave the EU.
BORIS JOHNSON: Looking for a further extension.
At the very least these people are guilty of a conflict of interest and should undoubtedly be barred from any crucial voting in these mat ters. Nope, sorry folks, I’m afraid your political preferences really don’t enter into it. The only democracy these people understand is the one that concurs with their own selfish senti ments, and they will do anything to frustrate Brexit or anything else that may threaten or interfere with their own lucrative ambitions. Well I’m here to warn them to be careful what they wish for. What these parliamentary conspirators don’t understand, is that by try ing to destroy Boris Johnson, they are taking away what could finally be a resolution to the whole sorry mess. For the first time since the referendum the public can see some light at the end of the tunnel and they won’t take kindly to seeing it snatched away yet again. It is not the public who are the instigators of all the confusion and chaos; we made our minds up three years ago. It is the politicians who are the problem. As usual! FRIDAY 13th. Rumours and superstitions surround this date in history, regarding both the number 13 and the day Friday. From a Norse myth (12 gods and their uninvited, 13th doomladen guest); Bibli cal references (Judas Iscariot, who be trayed Christ, the 13th diner at the Last Supper); medieval dastardly deeds (on Fri day October 13, 1307, King Philip of France arrested and put to death the revered Knights Templar for their Holy Grail secrets and wealth) to more modern times (Friday was the traditional day for public hangings in Britain with supposedly 13 steps leading up to the noose). And how is fear of the number 13 demonstrated today? Some airports have no gate 13. Some planes have no row 13. Hotels regularly have no floor or room 13. But if not the result of just plain old co incidence, some past ‘Friday 13th tragedies’ were actually planned to feed into the mythology. I’m thinking here of

In fact, in some countries like Italy, 13 is lucky while in Spain, it’s Tuesday the 13th that’s unlucky! Finally, a few positives. Hollywood offi cially arrived on a Friday 13th. The Holly wood sign (originally advertising ‘HOLLY WOODLAND’) was unveiled on Friday July 13, 1923. Built to advertise a housing de
velopment, it’s since become one of the world’s biggest tourist attractions. As for the UK, the first nudist colony was found ed on Friday June 13, 1930: the North De von Club in Metherell opened and Britons were allowed to let it all hang out. If you’re still spooked this Friday 13th, maybe you’ll be even more spooked on October 31st: Brexit day. Halloween will never be the same again... ENORMOUS carbon footprint
I REFER to your recent article in the Euro Weekly News. Each week we enjoy a great deal of live televised sport. Wonderful, covering all sport from around the world. All these events, football, cricket, tennis, racing, rugby World Cup, golf, etc etc leave an enormous carbon footprint created by the TV companies whose representatives, engineers, presenters and commentators travel by car, van, sea and air to provide us with our armchair entertainment. If the climate change and Green party people are genuine in their be lief about the disaster imminently awaiting us, they would demand the immediate banning of all outside broadcasting of sporting events as nonessential activity. Of course, they won’t and we all know why support would collapse. There are votes and kudos and good fees to be earned by those supporting ‘project fear’ in all its guises, so, as a demonstration of commitment to the cause let the climate experts and green political parties propose a ban on the televising of sporting events to be im plemented by world governments and then we would know they really are se rious! GLOBAL warming has been happening on Earth since Adam was alive. We worry about how many times we fly back to our home countries, the fuel we use in our car, the eco efficiency of our homes. All these things contribute to our global footprint - that is the impact we as individuals, through our lifestyle, have on the planet. But should we be made to feel guilty that living our lives is killing the planet and ultimately leading to the extinction of the human race? According to Dr Guy Midgley, head of the climate change research group of the National Biodiversity Institute South Africa, we live on an unusually stable planet, but periods of cooling and warming naturally happen in cycles. These periods of rising and falling temperatures over the last 500,000 years have been down to levels of methane and CO2 in the atmosphere which are not man-made. Also, levels of solar radiation vary over time and this has a significant impact on global temperatures, most notably in the Earth’s northern hemisphere. Climate change experts believe we are currently between ice ages and that the development of modern industry has had a relatively minor impact on temperatures. Over several thousand years in the earth’s history, temperatures have been higher than they currently are indicating that doing too many school runs or turning on the air con isn’t what’s going to wipe us out. So, it’s not just our fault, but does that mean we should throw caution to the wind? Not at all. Reducing greenhouse gases will slow down global warming and, while we’re the planet’s dominant species, we should do all we can to save the planet. After all, we’re only passing through.

The collection starts with Ghost Black Badge in Light Green Solid, a new Bespoke exterior finish. The pas tel green represents the rebirth of the flora on the peninsula following the years of drought and fire. The hand crafted leather interior is Black with a
striking Serenity Green splash high lighting the iconic Black Badge techni cal Fibre. The drophead creation among the collection is Dawn Black Badge in Coral Solid which showcases the Be spoke finish that can only come after seven coats of paint and more than nine hours of hand polishing in the Surface Finish Centre at the Home of RollsRoyce, Goodwood. I’m SuperGrumpyMan MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I BOUGHT some new garden furniture. We agreed a price - not the ticket price as I only ever use that as a starting point - and I paid by credit card. As I sat in the shop I got confirmation on my phone that the amount had been processed which is how it should be. When I got home I double checked the invoice and found a €30 mistake. I immedi ately phoned the store and the salesman apologised and said he would refund it straight away. A week later it’s not been credited. I’ve called them again and asked why not? But nobody can give me an an swer. I’ve noticed this a few times. If taking the money out can be instant, why can’t the repayment be just as quick? When I was in England recently I used Uber which I have set up with my Pay Pal account. When I checked I noticed there were two payments for Uber on one day even though I only used them once. I
emailed them and was told some reason why, which to be honest I didn’t under stand. It was something about guarantee ing the payment and it was just being held and would be credited back soon and four or five days later it was. What’s all this belt and braces protec tion? I’ve booked a car for an upcoming trip. I’ve got all the insurance cover but they are still going to put a €1,000 hold on my credit card. The problem being is that I have to go after them if they decide to charge me for something I have no clue about. I still never got my money back for a Monarch flight that I paid for with a debit card and probably never will because of the nutty banking rules. Someone wanted to send me some mon ey from a UK bank to my Spanish one. I told them to use an App that does it pretty quick. I was in the UK at the time but they decided to use their bank to do it. I was there for four days but I still got back to Spain before my money did even though it was instantly taken from my mate’s account. So I’ve decided my new name will be SuperGrumpyMan… travels faster than the speed of money transfer and re funds... a bit long but you get the point.

Excess heat can cause halitosis
THE long, hot summer days are upon us, but have you ever wondered what happens to the body in extreme heat. Some people love the sultry conditions and overload of vitamin D, but for others it can wreak havoc with the body. Hot weather can cause some painful chafing, unavoidable sweaty armpits and sleepless nights of re lentless tossing and turning. And then there’s the hay fever. But it can also give you bad breath. Excessive heat can cause you to dehydrate, which has been proven to have the unsexy side effect of halitosis. When the mouth becomes dry, bacteria accu mulates due to a lack of saliva to wash it away. During summer months, the body loses more water naturally through sweating. This, coupled with an increase in the use of hay fever medica tions, fad summer dieting, and increase in out door exercising and over exposure to the sun, can also make the problem worse.

Spanish researchers at the Universidad Com plutense in Madrid conducted a study which confirms that the mood of introverts is differ ent from extroverts, especially when it comes to positive situations. Beat the bloat WE’VE all had that feeling after a large meal or an indulgent holiday when your stomach can feel overfull or uncomfortable. It can be easy to assume this is simply because we have put on a pound or two, but sometimes even if we make all the right food choices the cause can just be simple bloating of the stomach. This condition has various causes, but thankfully can be easily treated. According to Healthline.com, ‘abdomi nal bloating occurs when the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is filled with air or gas. Most people describe bloat ing as feeling full, tight, or swollen in the abdomen. Your abdomen may also be swollen (distended), hard, and painful. Bloating is of ten accompanied by pain, excessive gas (flatulence), frequent burping or belch ing, abdominal rumbling or gurgles.’ The site claims the most common cause of bloating is gas which can enter the stomach by eating or drink ing too quickly, as well as by taking in too many car bonated drinks. Chewing gum and smoking can also cause the problem. If this is the case, try to slow down eating and cut back on fizzy drinks by eating more mindfully and taking time to chew and enjoy your food. Certain foods can also cause bloating, including beans and legumes, which can produce gas as they are broken down in the stomach.
Instead, try to substitute lighter coloured lentils and black beans which can be more easily digested. Wheat can also cause bloating in those who have a gluten in tolerance. If you suspect this may be you, why not try some glutenfree alternatives for pasta and bread and see if this helps. While it may be good for us in many other respects, broccoli and other crucifer ous vegetables can be hard for our bodies to digest, causing a buildup of gas. Instead, spinach, cucum bers, lettuce and sweet potato still contain plenty of vitamins, but without the painful side effects. Another unlikely culprit is some fruits. These include apples, which according to Healthline have, ‘been
known to cause bloating and other digestive issues for some people.’ It seems ‘the culprits are fructose (which is a FODMAP) and the high fibre content. Fructose and fibre can both be fermented in the large intestine, and may cause gas and bloating.’ The web site suggests switching raw apples for cooked ones which can be easier to di gest. Finally, dairy products can be difficult for many people to digest, resulting in bloating and discomfort. If that is the case, why not try some dairyfree alterna tives such as almond or soy milk and butter. Cutting back on cheese toppings can also help bloating with out impacting too much on taste.

While some patients will experience a little bit of soreness, redness and swelling, most can return to work immediately. Strong pain medication is seldom needed after having a thread lift. Thread lifts are low risk, thanks to how non-invasive they are. There is virtually no risk of scarring, severe bruising, bleeding or other complications. Thread lifts certainly produce visible changes, it also creates a more subtle and natural looking end result than facelift surgery. Thread lifts are therefore best suited to patients who are dealing with mild to moderate, rather than severe, signs of skin laxity. Theo blinded by cork LOVE ISLAND star Theo Camp bell has returned home from a holiday in Ibiza where he was temporarily blinded in one eye. He had been in Ibiza relaxing with fellow Love Island star Kaz Crossley when he was hit in the eye by a popping Cham pagne cork. Theo was sporting a pirate style patch over his right eye which had been seriously dam aged when he was hit in the
freak accident. He had been wearing sun glasses at a party and took them off at the very moment a woman in front of him popped the cork of a bubbly bottle. The force caused a tear that required seven stitches in his eye ball. Theo said: “It was a perfect bullseye, shot hits me clean in the eye and that’s how easy it was.” Specialists say there’s every

Gates goes solo in Ibiza SINGER Gareth Gates has been chilling in Ibiza with his sister Charlotte and friend Mimi after his split with fiancée Faye Brookes. Bowler’s black pudding BOWLER’S PRIVATE DINING I HAVE always been a huge fan of black pudding. Black pud ding is a type of blood sausage originating in the United King dom and Ireland. It is made from pork blood, with pork fat or beef suet, and a cereal, usu ally oatmeal, oat groats or bar ley groats. Here in Spain they have their own version made with rice which originates from Burgos. You will find it goes with many ingredients, espe cially sweet. For those who fol low my recipes, you might re member I used black pudding with apple and scallops not so long back.

‘Black pudding sticks with caramelised apple purée dip’ • Ingredients Filo pastry 200g black pudding (morcilla de cebolla) 1/2 onion (finally diced) 1 Egg yolk Vegetable oil 2 apples 4 tablespoons brown sugar 2 tablespoons honey 3 knobs butter Olive oil • ‘Black pudding sticks’ Method In a pan on a medium heat fry your onions till soft and brown, take the skins off the black pud ding and add the black pudding mix to a bowl, add the onions, season well and mix with your hands! Whisk the egg yolk ready to seal the filo pas try. Pre heat your deep fat fryer or a use a pan to shallow fry in vegetable oil. Lay out the filo pastry and using two sheets, add a spoonful of the mixture and roll to any size you would like your sticks, using the egg yolk to seal the edge. Fry for about 20 seconds on each side, dry us ing kitchen paper.

• ‘Caramelised apple puree dip’ Method Place the apples into a pan with a drizzle of olive oil, knob of butter, and cook till soft and start to brown, set aside. In the same pan now add the honey and brown sugar, when the sugar starts to devolve and starts caramelising then add your apple mix back to the pan and mix well. Transfer the mixture to a food processor and blend until a smooth purée. Place into the fridge to chill until ready to serve.

BARRY DUKE I HAVE 11 years to live. This I know because my husband’s iPhone told me so. The disconcerting fact surfaced when Marcus said ‘put your fore finger here,’ pointing at his phone’s camera lens. When he hit a button on the screen, the lens emitted a light and up flashed a message to say that my heartbeat was 83 beats per minute. ‘Is that good?’ I asked. ‘Well, it’s normal for someone of your age,’ he replied. But the app that allowed him to measure my heartbeat Cardiio also indicat ed that the 83 bpm figure meant that I could only expect to live un til 83, and am not sure this was something I wanted to be told. Later, Google informed me that the vast number of heartbeat and blood pressure apps available for iPhones and Android devices are wildly inaccurate and are about as much use as a walking stick to a walrus. Of much greater use to me is a fantastic app called PlantSnap, which uses your mobile’s camera

MOBILE PHONE APPS: Some are more useful than others. to identify thousands of plants. It not only names them, but tells one how to care for them. Until I downloaded it my knowl edge of plants was pretty dismal, but now I know the names of all the greenery and flowers on our balcony, and I’ve become hooked
on photographing all manner of things growing in various loca tions around our apartment. It was through this app that I discovered that the most prolific shrub in the area the Oleander is also the most deadly. There is a story that in Spain, in the times of
French occupation by Napoleon’s troops, an invitation to share a meal was extended by the Spanish to French soldiers. In the prepara tion of the meat, peeled Oleander cuttings were used as skewers to roast it, resulting in the death of many of the Napoleonic troops.
I then wondered whether the app could be tricked. Yes it can. I snapped a pic of Chris, a bar tender at Benidorm’s Company Bar, and it identified him as a rose. He laughed out loud when I said ‘Be grateful it didn’t say you were a pansy!’ After I downloaded PlantSnap, I went in search of other apps that would give me as much pleasure, but nothing save the iShaver appealed to me. It’s basically a virtual electric shaver, and emits a loud buzzing sound. I told Marcus, who has been cultivating his beard for years, to shut his eyes. When he did I pressed my phone to his chin and shouted ‘your fa cial fuzz is extremely annoying and I’m getting rid of it!’ His eyes snapped open in a panic, and for a moment I thought I’d get the beating of my life. Another fun app for those who don’t value their smartphones as much as they should is called Send Me To Heaven (SMTH). To make it work, you simply hurl your phone skywards and it calcu lates the height of the throw. The blurb for this Android app says: ‘You can challenge your friends to see who gets the higher score, that is, until your phone breaks.’ Even if I had an Android phone, I’d certainly give that one a miss!

Honda Civic SR ROAD TEST by Nick Fletcher THE Honda Civic has been in production for close on 50 years, first introduced in 1972 and still going strong with latest versions offering sleek sporty styling, enhanced equipment and outstanding fuel economy. Priced from €21,467 (£19,395), the Civic range offers petrol and diesel engines and several trim levels and my test model was a mid-range SR model with a 1.5-litre 118 hp diesel engine with six-speed manual gearbox. This model costs €25,004 (£22,590). The engine is quiet and responsive and the gearshift is very slick, so the car has a smooth effortless driving feel, and upgraded suspension is well-balanced, providing excellent ride comfort and poised cornering. Top speed is 209 kph (130 mph), the 0100 kph time 10.0 seconds. Emissions are low at 110 g/km and the fuel economy of 20.8 kpl (58.9 mpg) is impressive. The Civic has a slightly lower driving position than most rivals and being longer, lower and wider than previous models, exudes a bolder and more sporty profile which help it stand out in the hatchback class.
The spacious cabin has good head and leg room in the rear and the boot has a substantial 519-litre capacity which can be expanded by dropping the rear seats, which fold flat for easy loading. Trim materials have been upgraded and along with neat design accents deliver a quality appearance. The dashboard is well-designed with clear instrumentation and while the touch-screen infotainment system is a little slower to react than some, it does the job and you quickly get used to it. Standard kit on the SR is generous and includes front and rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera, dual-zone climate control, digital radio, Bluetooth, smartphone integration, connectivity and sat-nav. Safety features include adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, auto emergency braking, agile handling assist and traffic sign recognition. In a sector which includes the VW Golf and Ford Focus, the latest Civic has an appealing presence. Its new styling is less quirky than previous versions and has a more upmarket image, under-pinned by Honda’s well-established record for reliability. Model tested was UK-specification and equipment levels and prices may vary in other markets.

Rafa’s a winner again THE 33-year-old Spanish lefthander moved one shy of Roger Federer’s all-time men’s record 20 Grand Slam triumphs and with it became the second-oldest New York champion in the Open era after Ken Rosewall in 1970 at age 35. Delivering one of his most spectacu lar major final performances, Rafa cap tured his 19th career Grand Slam title on Sunday by winning his fourth US Open against Russia’s Daniil Medvedev 75, 63, 57, 46, 64. The match got off to an intriguing start when Nadal received a warning for slow play in the very first game. In his next game, Nadal gave away an early break when a couple of fore hands skewed off his racket frame and failed even to reach the net. Had it been any other player the errors may have increased, but not Nadal who is the best on the tour at preventing things to spin out of his control. SPORT FERRARI’S home win by Charles Leclerc at Monza has left Lewis Hamilton saying the younger generation of drivers “get away with a lot more” in wheel-to-wheel battles. The race featured a thrilling battle between the young Monegasque and fivetimes world champion Hamilton. The latter looked like the faster of the two drivers for pe riods and tried several passes without making any stick. Cred it for that should go to Leclerc who defended robustly. At one point Hamilton had to use the runoff area to avoid a collision and Leclerc cut the first chicane but retained the lead. After the race Hamilton said: “It doesn’t really matter what I think. I don’t really have any thing to say about it. We’ve gone over and over it multiple times, it’s pointless me bringing it up. I avoided the collision, and just kept focusing on trying to get close again.
