CALA DEL MORAL: Scene of the drowning.

WARNING: Boris Johnson not to expect any further Brexit concessions. PEDRO SANCHEZ warned Boris Johnson not to expect any further Brexit concessions. Speaking during the weekly control session in the national parliament, the president of the Spanish government conceded that a hard Brexit with no agreement now seemed likely. Sanchez pointed out that the

remaining 27 EU member states had acted with flexibility and good faith from the outset, stressing that there could be no renegotiation of the agreement that Brussels signed with Theresa May’s government last November. Boris Johnson went ahead and suspended parliament despite crushing defeats earlier this

week in the Commons, insisting that he is making every effort to reach an agreement with Brussels. The British PM has also declared that he would rather “die in a ditch” than remain in the EU after October 31, despite lastminute legislation rushed through parliament. This obliges him to postpone Brexit by three months if he fails

Country heads for fourth election in four years SPAIN looks to be heading for its fourth general election in four years after talks between the acting Prime Minister’s centre-left PSOE party and the far-left Unidos Podemos failed to break the current political impasse. On Tuesday the two sides’ negotiating teams confirmed discussions on securing the investiture of Pedro Sanchez as Prime Minister had broken down and that there were no immediate plans for talks to continue. Speaking in Congress today, Wednesday, Sanchez urged the main opposition figures to bring the deadlock to an end and allow the formation of a “progressive” government which would be able to carry out the “major transformations” which Spain needs and

which he said needed to be based on consensus. PSOE won more votes than any other party in the April election, but with just 29 per cent did not gain an absolute majority. A PSOE-Podemos coalition would, with the support of smaller parties, mean Sanchez could expect to be confirmed in office. Sanchez wants the two parties to agree a common programme, but does not want to give Podemos any ministries. There is now a situation of distrust between the two sides, and Podemos maintains PSOE is stuck on the idea of forming a government on its own. If Sanchez is not able by September 23 to gain sufficient votes in parliament to form a new government, voters will have to go back to the polls on November 10.

to strike a deal at the EU summit in just under three weeks’ time. Meanwhile Sanchez told parliament that Spain is prepared for all Brexit scenarios. “Spanish citizens and companies do not need to worry,” he declared.

A WOMAN was found dead near the shore in Cala del Moral. A report issued by the Local Police has confirmed the death of a woman in the water at around 10.45am on Friday. A member of the public alerted the 112 emergency services after the woman was spotted by fellow bathers floating in the water around five metres from the beach edge.

According to the report, the bathers managed to bring the woman back to the shore but were unable to resuscitate her. Once officers from the Public Company of Sanitary Emergencies (EPES), the Local Police and the Guardia Civil arrived at the scene, all they could do was to pronounce her dead. An investigation is now underway by the Guardia Civil into the circumstances surrounding the death.
