PLANS to launch an 061 health emergencies centre serving the Almeria North Health District represent “a significant advance for the region,” according to Junta de Andalucia Health provincial delegate Juan de la Cruz Belmonte. The delegate’s comment followed an important step forward in getting the service up and running from what would be its base in the old Vera health centre, the local authority reported. Technicians and management personnel from the 061 Health Emergencies Public Company travelled from Malaga last week to inspect the Vera facilities. centre “complies with all the necessary technical requirements.” The delegate repeated his commitment to have the service “operating as soon as possible so it is operational before the end of the year.” Vera Council said the new service would have six doctors, six nurses and various other emergency staff, who will have at their disposal two ambulances and air transport. It

would, the local authority said, function together with the 112 service through a medical coordinator, who would distribute the emergency assistance callouts. A council statement said there would be the “advantage of providing a much more rapid response time on having its own, exclusive health staff resources, while the 112 is used for towns’ primary care doctors.”
