Drug raids on Mallorca MORE than 100 officers, some of whom came from the mainland of Spain, have carried out a series of drug raids at houses in Palma, Lloseta, Marratxí and Cala Rajada. As part of the anti-drug operation named ‘Crótalo,’ the authorities seized a container carrying 80kg of cocaine from Algeria. Four arrests have been made across the island so far and a house in Lloseta was raided where police found an underground cocaine lab. The operation took place on Wednesday morning at dawn and similar raids took place in Barcelona and Madrid.
CANCELLED: Plans for the Open Arms to arrive in Palma. THE Open Arms humanitarian crisis was thought to be finally drawing to a close with a Spanish Navy ship ready to set sail to collect the migrants from the boat which they have been stranded on for 19 days. Palma was ready and waiting for the migrants to arrive on the Spanish Navy ship ‘Audaz’ that was due to set sail on a three-day journey from Rota in Cadiz to the Italian island of
Lampedusa but late on Tuesday, the Government Delegation cancelled the meeting of the parties involved that was scheduled for Wednesday and halted the plan to send the ship. Instead, Italian prosecutor, Luigi Patronaggio ordered the immediate disembarkation of the immigrants in Lampedusa for humanitarian reasons. Many people and organisations in Palma had been
working hard to get sports centres on the island for the arrival of the ship. Furniture, food and clothing had been collected to be handed out by volunteers at the centres, but this will no longer be needed. Although frustrated, the volunteers have expressed their relief that the humanitarian crisis that has shone a light on the plight of these migrants has finally reached a solution.

Boat fire FIRE broke out on board a boat on Tuesday morning with the flames quickly consuming the vessel. Emergency services were mobilised and it was unknown what caused the fire or if anyone was injured at the time of going to press.
UK twitchers THE council of Mallorca had its own stand at the recent British Birdwatching Fair to promote all things ornithological on the island as there are five main birdwatching locations and the council aims to promote this to tourists.

Bid to derail train takeover A HISTORIC train service saved by residents in Soller could be at risk under a planned buyout. The train from Palma to Soller is under threat of a takeover by a group of anonymous investors who have offered an estimated €25 million to buy the railway. The train, which has been running since 1912, runs from the centre of Palma to the picturesque town of Soller on the north of the island. The train is made up of wooden carriages and has been travelling the 27km journey, with 200 metre inclines and 13 tunnels, for over 100 years. The money to build the train was raised by local

people who hold the 172,000 shares between them.

railway lost its unusual status of being owned by the local citizens.” The bid to buy the railway has come from a group of up to 15 anonymous investors who are represented by Goros Investments. The reported sum of €25 million would pay the current owners more than 15 years’ worth of dividends. Residents of Soller are very protective of the train and it is a major part of life in the town and it is thought unlikely that they will wish to sell something that is so important to the town. Shareholders have been given until September 6 to decide whether they wish to accept the offer.
Body discovered THE body of a man was discovered on Sunday in a secluded spot next to the road to Cap Blanc in Llucmajor. The corpse was found by a hiker shortly before 1pm on the road in a wooded area between the road and the cliffs. Forensic experts and Guardia Civil attended the scene and conducted a search of the surrounding area and guessed that the body had been there for a few months. A post-mortem has revealed that the man was around 40
years old and it appears that he died of natural causes as there were no signs of violence. The body was considerably decomposed which enforces the forensic team’s guess that the body had been there for approximately three months. The Guardia Civil are working to get a positive identification of the man, but sources suggest all signs point to the remains being those of Josep Bausà Roig who disappeared on June 17.

Spain’s forgotten canyon AROUND a two-hour drive from Alicante airport, one of Spain’s most stunning natural wonders lies in the depths of rural Castile-La Mancha. The Jucar Canyon is a 40km gorge that is carved through the Albacete countryside, with picturesque villages and luscious green forests lining the banks of the Jucar River that follows its path. The canyon is situated in an area known as La Manchuela. The
source of the canyon starts out as rich, fertile vegetable gardens and river vegetation. It soon transforms into a unique habitat, with woodland of juniper, pine and holm-oak perched on the side of the steep 100-metre high gorge sides. On the steeper sections the rocky outcrops are home to nesting birds of prey such as Griffon Vultures and Golden Eagles and the river is rich in aquatic and bird life. One of the most spectacular
sights along the gorge is the villages that are perched on top of the many meanders that the river takes. One of the most spectacular being the stretch between Valdeganga to the village of Villa de Ves. Although relatively unknown as a tourist destination, sports such as hiking, fishing, cycle-touring, kayaking are all practised on the river, and a number of lovely guest houses are situated along the length of the river.

THE date has finally been set! Mallorcan tennis hero, Rafa Nadal, and his fiancée Xisca Perelló will get married in Pollensa on October 19 this year. The couple will say “I do” at a finca in Pollensa with the reception for the guests held nearby. The wedding will be one of the most high-profile events on the island and will attract many well-known faces from the upper echelons of Mallorcan society as well as plenty of famous people from the world of sport. It is also suspected that King Juan Carlos will be in attendance due to his close friendship with Rafa Nadal and his fiancée It was revealed in January that the couple of 14 years had decided to tie the knot and that they would do so in Mallorca. It was reported that the bride-to-be held her ‘hen party’ in Malaga in July.
PRIVATE jets are a luxury that few of us can afford, but even they are being affected by the downturn in tourism that many have speculated about in Mallorca this summer. According to data from AENA, the arrival and departure of private jets from Palma’s Son Sant Joan Airport has fallen by 5.2 per cent for the first seven months of 2019. From January to July, 6,189 planes and 14,777 passengers passed through the executive terminal with last month the lowest in terms of traffic - 1,652 planes and 3,938 passengers - a drop of 7.4 per cent on last year. Gestair, one of the two General Aviation operators at Palma airport, confirmed AENA’s data is due to changes in the tourism industry. They have stated that destinations that have suffered a decline in tourism in recent years such as Egypt and Turkey have now become popular again.

Brit kickboxer stops robber ‘PRETTY KILLER,’ a British kickboxer managed to stop a robbery in Palmanova with her boyfriend, it has been reported in various British newspapers. The kickboxer, whose real name is Iman Barlow, was holidaying in Palmanova with her boyfriend, professional boxer Stan Stannard, when they witnessed a man being attacked by men on a scooter and intervened. The robbers apparently had hit the victim over the head with a crash helmet and stole his watch, reported to be worth €27,000. As the robbers escaped, Barlow performed one of her signature kicks to the chest and slowed one of them down while Stannard chased him and knocked

THE government in Mallorca is trialling a new way of consumption of alcohol in bars and restaurants by putting the power in the hands of some of the waiters and waitresses. A course has so far been taken by 185 waiters and waitresses at the Institut Mallorquí d’Afers Socials (IMAS) this summer to teach them about ways to control the sale of alcohol and who is permitted to purchase alcoholic drinks. The course is made up of theoretical modules as well as a face-to-face session. Other than bars and restaurants in the tourist hotspots that have issues with exces-

Cliff jumping accident AN 18-year-old boy has been seriously injured after throwing himself into the sea from a 15-metre cliff in Cala Banyalbufar, as reported by 061. The events occurred at 12.50pm on Monday in a remote area that had limited access and was difficult for the emergency services to reach, which resulted in the injured boy being rescued by a helicopter from the Son Bonet base. A mobile ICU and the mountain rescue group of Inca and Soller as well as Mallorca firefighters attended the scene and took him to the Son Espases hospital by helicopter. The young man is in a stable condition and is believed to have suffered serious injuries to his leg, his femur in particular.

Blood bank reserves THE Blood and Tissue Bank of the Balearic Islands (BSTIB) made an appeal on Monday to residents of Mallorca to donate blood in order to increase the reserves of blood groups A+ and A-, which are currently rather low. The organisation has detailed in a statement that it has 685 units, in addition to the minimum reserves available to each hospital. The Balearic Islands need 1,000 blood donations a week to meet the demands of the local hospitals. In a statement that the minimum amounts are available and although all donations are welcomed, they need more A+ and Athan other blood groups. The BSTIB has asked residents to make more of an effort this summer to maintain the stock of blood as at this time of year, donations are reduced due to

Man stabbed in robbery A 33-YEAR-OLD man was stabbed during a robbery on Sunday in the La Soledat district of Palma, 061 reports. The attack took place after midnight on Sunday night and the man was stabbed in the leg, chest, shoulder and abdomen and was in a serious condition before he was found by a security guard in his car. The security guard dialled 112 and the man was taken to Son Espases Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery for his injuries. The man remains in hospital and is believed to be out of imminent danger. The Homicide Group of the National Police has launched an investigation and will take a statement from the man once he has recovered from his injuries and will question witnesses and neighbours in the area to find out what happened.

Mallorcans banished TWO Mallorcan criminals accused of multiple crimes including a string of thefts from Magaluf beach have been banished from the island by a judge. The two men are both alleged to have long criminal records and were arrested by an offduty police officer when he recognised them in the Plaza del Mercadal in Sineu on Monday. The young people failed to comply with the magistrate’s order, issued on July 27, and continued to reside in Mallorca. Judge Antoni Rotger ordered the men to leave the island before 8pm on July 28, but the two men failed to comply with the judge’s decision and continued to live in Mallorca. The men were also issued with a fine of
€5,400 for the alleged crime of breach of a judge’s order. The lawyer representing the two men has argued that the measures are totally disproportionate and said that there are other options which could be used in order to prevent them from offending again. According to the lawyer, banishment from the island will hinder the personal and family life and economic and work situation of the men and the prosecutor has agreed with his reasoning and asks that the suspects be prohibited from being within 200 metres of Magaluf beach. Another court date is set for the end of August, when the accused men will hear the judge’s final ruling.

Abandoned animals down THE Son Reus Municipal Animal Protection Shelter has plenty of empty cages this summer which is definitely a reason to be happy as the number of abandoned animals has gone down in 2019. This year, 1,118 dogs and cats have been handed over to Son Reus - 288 have a chip, 563 are strays and 267 were handed over by their owners. Normally there is an increase of abandoned animals in the summer and it is hoped that the number does not increase towards the end of the summer when people leave the island. So far this year, 527 animals have been adopted and 78 dogs and 30 cats are now ready to be adopted which shows that the centre has a high adoption rate. The Son Reus facilities have 110 cages for the animals and the council has laid out plans to build a second operating room and recruit a new veterinarian to improve the facilities.

Unique street art SOME unique street art has started to appear in the Es Jonguet district of P a l m a i n re c e n t w e e k s . Artist, Abraham Calero, has been installing pieces of his art in the area with the support of the local residents. A quick stroll through Es Jonguet will take you past pieces of art featuring Simba from the Lion King alongside Natalie Portman from Closer and
Elsa from Frozen making friends with Jack Nicholson. The art is made by pasting together various images from popular culture. Neighbours in the area have been very supportive, more so than in S’Escorxador where his work was previously installed. S o m e re s i d e n t s h a v e even made suggestions for future pieces.

Single living THE municipal census of January 1, 2019 has revealed the area in Palma where most people live alone - Sant Jaume, Es Jonguet and Sindicat. The figures show that six out of 10 households in these areas are single-person households compared with Sant Nicolau, where families make up 55.59 per cent of the population and in La Llotja-Born where the figure for families is 55.4 per cent. More than a quarter of these single-person households are home to people over the age of 64 and the areas with a higher concentration of older people living alone were Bonanova and El Amanacer. In Palma, with rents higher than most other parts of the island, it is more common to find younger single people sharing apartments in areas such as Paseo Maritimo and Santa Catalina to keep costs down.
400 evacuated from ferry NEARLY 400 people have been evacuated from a ferry in Denia (Costa Blanca, Spain) after it reportedly ran aground having left Mallorca. Spanish coastguard (Salvamento Maritimo) and Guardia Civil helped move passengers to safety after the Balearia ferry which had sailed from Mallorca and Ibiza reportedly hit a harbour wall then ran aground as it prepared to dock. The incident happened at 11.30pm last Friday with the rescue operation from the Pinar del Rio going on for two hours. Balearia said in a statement: “The fast ferry Pinar del Rio ran aground ... by Denia’s harbour wall without any personal injury to passengers or crew. “The fast ferry, which was coming from Palma and Ibiza, was going to dock in the port. “There were 393 people and 70 vehicles on board. “All the passengers were unharmed

MANUELA CARMENA, former mayor of Madrid, dismissed as ‘frivolous’ suggestions that she could be a minister in a future Pedro Sanchez government. Carmena’s Mas Madrid was the most-voted party in the May 26 municipal elections although city hall is now controlled by a Partido Popular-Ciudadanos-Vox alliance. “Nobody has offered anything,” said Carmena.
Personal opinion ANNOUNCING Madrid’s candidates for the April 28 general elections, Ciudadanos leader Albert Rivera said Spain was lucky to have people like Marcos de Quinto. Catalan elections not ruled out GUILTY verdicts for Catalan separatists facing charges that include rebellion and misappropriation of public funds could trigger an early regional election. Oriol Junqueras, president of the Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) party, has been imprisoned on remand since November 2017 following the regional parliament’s unilateral declaration of independence of October 27. This came to nothing and the PDeCat leader and former regional president Carles Puigdemont fled Spain two days later, followed by other members of the regional government. Twelve who remained stood trial earlier this year and await verdicts due to arrive after the summer break. “Calling elections is an option that cannot be rejected,” Junqueras told a radio interviewer. The other pro-independence party PDeCat is unconvinced, especially its leader Carles Puigdemont who now lives in Waterloo (Belgium). With ERC overtaking Puigdemont’s party in the last general elections and continuing to rise in the polls, the former regional president considers this would result in his PDeCat successor and protégé - Quim Torra heading a weakened acting government. Equally important, but unspoken, is the likelihood of an ERC overall majority that would weaken Puigdemont’s own grip.

Corbyn intent on stopping No Deal JEREMY CORBYN has stated in a recent speech that he will not let Boris Johnson ‘crash out’ of the EU without a deal by calling for another election after they hold a vote of no confidence. Corbyn compared Johnson to Trump in his speech, a likeness that drew the Conservatives to respond in turn by referring to this attempt to gain power as a ‘cynical’ move to ‘dither.’ Cor-
byn expressed that Labour is morally obliged to take the situation into their own hands and capitalise on the aftermath of the vote of no confidence to avoid what he has termed a ‘Trump Deal Brexit.’ The vote of no confidence is scheduled to take place early October before the UK is supposed to be taken out of the EU. If Johnson cannot secure his position as prime minister in
the two weeks after the first vote, Corbyn will have an opportunity to stop the Conservative government from forcing the UK out of the EU. Johnson believes that he will still have the power to do so whilst the second vote is in situ. The Labour party has agreed that Jeremy Corbyn cannot control a majority vote in parliament if the Conservative lose the vote of no confidence. Brexit spokesperson Tom Brake has called for Corbyn to stand down if this is the case and back a new leader who will ultimately have more success in the house. Corbyn has refused to relinquish his position after a vote of no confidence is passed and has urged all those in the remain camp to get on board with his plan.

Hammond has vehemently denied any involvement in this alleged intentional move to undermine Johnson and his team before important negotiations with the EU. Making provisions IN his latest speech Jeremy Corbyn has cited new leaked documents pertaining to an operation aimed at making provisions necessary to keep the supply of some vital medicines and food steady in post-Brexit Britain. The documents for the operation entitled ‘Yellowhammer’ suggest that the UK will have problems importing some vital medicines and some fresh food after leaving the EU. Michael Gove - the minister in charge of making sure that in a no-deal scenario Britain’s assets and economy is secure - has been reported as saying that operation Yellowhammer denotes the worst case scenario. He claims that he and his team are making sufficient efforts to stop severe delays in receiving medicine and food. According to various government sources however, the leaked documents mention that the worst case scenario is the scenario most likely to transpire.
Farming news MP Owen Paterson has claimed that when the UK leaves the EU farmers will be able to better plan funding to cover their costs and they will not have to compete with the European farmers who will be able to significantly undercut them.
New structure JEREMY CORBYN has proposed a new structure of taxation after Brexit in the new economic landscape. He said in his speech on Monday a general election after October 31 when the UK is set to leave the EU will necessitate increased taxing of the very wealthy.

ENDANGERED: Turtle doves are being hunted in droves.
THE endangered turtle dove will once again be hunted in Spain this year even after the European Commission has described Spain’s methods for preserving the species as inadequate. The Ministry for Ecological Transition (MITECO) has been notified by the European Commission that infringement procedures should be implemented amid the declining number of turtle doves in Spain. MITECO have put in place a partial ban from midAugust until the end of Sep-
tember during mating season, but the European Commission has deemed this a consolatory measure that will not restore the number of the species to where it needs to be. Professional hunters have estimated that somewhere between 500,000 and 800,000 turtle doves will be killed in the upcoming season. Some areas in Spain have denounced the fact that the turtle dove population is declining, others have chosen to accept the European Commission’s assessment and enforced a partial hunting ban. Asturias, the Canary Islands, Valencia and the Basque Country have all pledged to help repopulate the species in their autonomous communities. The SEO/Birdlife NGO has gained the support of 40,000 citizens all over Spain to help protect the turtle dove until it has adequately replenished its numbers.

The Associated Press spoke with many other women who worked for Domingo and they all recall advising the younger girls in the cast not to find themselves alone with the man as he allegedly had a bad reputation in the business. If new legislation were to be implemented forcing campers to leave after a couple of months, the periods in between the two high seasons may lead to business slowing down significantly.

In Europe, there was a mixed picture which overall pointed to the slowdown across the continent. While the euro did struggle, there were some bright spots including the news from Italy that Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini has called for an early election. ZEW’s surveys of investor confidence in
Germany fell in August but the euro moved higher after the release. There was also little reaction to the fact that German GDP shrank 0.1% in Q2. Across Europe, retail sales increased by 1.1% in June, which was considered good news, but positive ecostats from the US put pressure on the euro. President Trump further stoked tensions with China with accusations of currency manipulation, but did pause plans for new 10% import duties on Chinese goods. The tariffs have been postponed until December 15 to ensure that it doesn’t impact consumers in the run-up to Christmas. US inflation was up from 1.6% to 1.8%, not enough to deter the Fed from cutting interest rates. As expected, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) held the cash rate at 1% and confirming that there would be a further easing to monetary policy as required, which investors saw as a sign that the rate could be 0.5% by the end of the year. NAB’s business survey suggested a loss of momentum and this pushed the Aussie lower. Interest rates also played a role in the fate of the New Zealand dollar; in a surprise move the Reserve Bank of New Zealand cut the benchmark rate from 1.5% to 1% and this also assisted the Australian dollar as it was seen as increasing the likelihood of rate cuts. The New Zealand dollar fell after the news was announced, particularly because RBNZ Governor Adrian Orr highlighted that “it’s easily within the realms of possibility that we might have to use negative interest rates.”

Birdsong less intricate
RESEARCHERS from Spain and Hawaii have conducted a joint study which has revealed that birds are not making such complex sounds as they did in the past as populations decline. The study was focused on Hawaii and centered around the Honeycreeper Bird which is endemic to the Pacific Island. The results were published in the Royal Society Open Science journal and proved particularly interesting to
twitchers the world over as they try to repopulate areas deserted by certain species due to climate change, amongst other environmental factors. Previous studies have shown that the Honeycreeper population is dwindling in Hawaii and this has caused less rigid mating rituals within them. Adding to that, when there are less birds in an environment there are fewer songs to imitate and therefore less diverse birdsong.
Brutal assault A 51-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested after he allegedly raped and brutally battered a young prostitute who refused to perform certain sexual practices. Police say the detained man went to a club in Logroño (La Rioja) to demand sexual services. When these were not forthcoming, he beat the victim, who was unknown to him, so severely her jaw was broken. To escape his assault the victim had to lock herself in the bathroom at which point the man left the premises. A man fitting his description was tracked down by police and arrested in another club a few days later.

Be careful of watch thieves A WA R N I N G h a s b e e n sent out to watch out for muggers who are targeting people for their expensive watches in Spain. It seems to be a particular and recurring problem in the Balearic Islands where foreign gangs are known by police to return for the summer season in search of wealthy and unsuspecting tourists. The latest warning has come from a man who was targeted by thieves riding a moped in Palma. S p e a k i n g t o t h e U K ’s Mail Online the 44-yearold man who wishes to remain anonymous, described how a thief tried to remove a €25,000 Audemar Piguet watch from his wrist while he was queuing to pay in a shop after a trip to the beach. thief the intended victim is a jiu-jitsu expert who chased the criminal and subdued him with the help of double Thai boxing world champion Iman Barlow, as reported in the Euro Weekly News. The victim has blamed this incident on ‘Italians’
who he says f l y i n t o commit this sort of crime. He now wants an ‘explanation’ from the Spanish authorities on why this sort of targeted theft is still happening, and warns people to be on their guard for thieves.
Illegal beach rave AN investigation has taken place into an illegal rave that took place in the early hours of Sunday morning on the beach of Cala Sa Boadella in the Girona town of Lloret de Mar. Around 150 people attended the get together where loud music could be heard emanating from a secluded cove. Authorities were called after a taxi driver was alerted by large congregations of people in the area. Around 12 officers were dispatched to the scene and in total; five people have been identified as the soc a l l e d o rg a n i s e r s o f t h e event. Although the ring leaders have not been arrested, procedures have been put in place to sanction them

Theme park closed for ‘flying swastikas’ A THEME park in Löffingen, Germany has been forced to close its doors after just one month when its newest ride caused a storm as it resembled giant spinning swastikas. The ride included two spinning arms on a single upright arm. Because of the four seats on each of the arms, the shape resembles a swastika as it rotates. A video was released online with users stunned by the mistake. One person wrote: ‘You really do not have the words. Something like that would have to be banned.’ Rüdiger Braun, the owner of the park, said he didn’t realise the resemblance until the video circulated online. He also apologised for any offence caused by the mistake and is currently in talks to redesign the ride.

If you are eligible, you can give blood at your local hospital, or via the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja) at one of their clinics, or in one of their mobile units. You can check dates and locations by visiting www.donarsangre.org. A donor card is not necessary to give blood. On the first visit you will have to provide DNI, NIE, passport or a driving licence. If you are already registered in the Blood Bank, you only need a donor card or a document with your name and surname. The process of blood donation takes just 10 minutes in which 450 ml are collected (equating to 10 per cent of the total blood circulation of an adult person). Despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain blood is through the generosity of the public. The blood is carefully screened for disease to make sure it is safe. After a tattoo, you must wait four months to be eligible to donate. After surgery, the exclusion period will depend on the type of intervention. After minor surgical procedures, you cannot donate blood for seven days or until you are fully recovered. After undergoing major surgery, you will not be able to donate blood for four months. The rarest blood type is AB, present in 1 per cent of Caucasians, according to research by the America Red Cross. Blood transfusions are carried out daily in Spanish hospitals with more than 6,200 patients being given them, of whom almost a quarter are fighting cancer and a similar figure receiving transfusions during or after surgery. Airport strikes
IBERIA workers at Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport have announced four days of strikes on August 24, 25, 30 and 31. According to trade union UGT, as in July the strikes are in protest at the lack of sufficient staff to meet real needs and the ‘systematic failure’ by the company to meet previous agreements reached with staff. The main problems are, according to the union, the lack of permanent staff they need to increase the temporary workforce and the indiscriminate use of compulsory overtime.

Factories switch RETAIL giant Inditex has been reducing its number of manufacturing partners in Latin America and moving to Asia. Since 2015, the number of factories with which Inditex works have been cut by 96 per cent and 55 per cent in Brazil and Argentina respectively. At the same time the number of factories working for Inditex on a non-exclusive basis increased notably in Cambodia (43 per cent), China (40 per cent) and Bangladesh (35 per cent). China is the country with the highest number of plants associated with the company, 1,903.

entry came into force in June 2016, the status quo has changed radically and audits of Ibex companies, traditionally dominated by Deloitte, are now dominated by PwC, which verifies the accounts of a dozen companies. Low growth forecast FUNDS manager Pimco expects eurozone GDP to grow between 0.75 per cent and 1.25 per cent in 2019. With some countries in recession this represents a slowdown influenced by the significant downward pressure on the economy of weak world trade. Pimco’s forecasts are more pessimistic than those of the European Commission itself, which predicted growth of 1.2 per cent in 2019 for the euro area. In the second quarter, the single currency economy grew by just 0.2 per cent, half that of the first quarter, as confirmed this week by Eurostat. Germany’s economy contracted by 0.1 per cent. Further afield, Pimco considers that the yuan’s stability is ‘well anchored’ with a ‘patient’ Federal Reserve, which understands that this should be a component of the t r a d e a g re e m e n t b e tween China and the US. The European Central Bank (ECB) is preparing a major stimulus package against the weakness of the Eurozone, as recently announced by its president, Mario Draghi. It is trying to curb an ‘ever-worsening’ economic scenario. As for the United Kingdom, the fund manager has predicted real growth in the range of 1 per cent to 1.5 per cent in 2019, since it considers a nodeal Brexit ‘a low probability event.’

Vehicle production on the decline VEHICLE production in Spain, the second largest producer in Europe and the ninth largest in the world, continues to fall. Official data shows that up to the end of May, it had fallen by 5.6 per cent compared to the same period of 2018. Forecasts are for the decline to be between 3 per cent and 5 per cent of volume to about 2.7 million units by the end of the year, which would be the third consecutive year of falls. The main reason for this loss of production derives from the fall in demand of Spain’s main markets which are 90 per cent European. Leading the fall in sales has been Spain itself, which saw 5.7 per cent fewer registrations in the first six months of the year. Italy saw a decline of 3.5 per cent to 1.08 million registrations. Third was the United Kingdom with a decrease of 3.4 per cent, to 1.26 million units. In France, deliveries fell by 1.8 per cent to
1.16 million. Germany, the main European market, grew by 0.5 per cent to 1.84 million sales, but could not prevent sales in Europe as a whole from contracting by 3.1 per cent. This loss of demand is causing production adjustments at Spanish car plants. Mercedez-Benz Vitoria has reduced production of Class V and Vito vans by 6,000 units for this year. The Villaverde plant of the PSA Group is undergoing a process of temporary employment regulation (Erte) until 2020; and in the centre of Vigo, on the line that manufactures the Peugeot 301 and Citroën CElysée, another temporary employment agreement has been formalised until production of these models ends at the end of the year. Ford Almussafes has just announced another Erte that will affect all its workers until the end of the year, both in the car plant and in the engine plant. Iveco,
CNH Industrial’s truck manufacturer, has had another Erte since January 2018 at its Madrid plant. Nissan Barcelona is running an ERE for 600 people because of the low demand for the pick-ups it produces. And Nissan Avila has already stopped manufacturing trucks to become a plant producing spare parts. On the positive side, the Volkswagen group has just awarded its factory in Landaben a third model that will start production in the second half of 2021 and will guarantee 340,000 units per year in the medium term. In 2018 it produced 272,000 cars. Both VW Navarra and Seat Martorell will end the year with more production. Ford will manufacture battery packs in Almussafes from September 2020; and Renault, whose production in Valladolid and Palencia is falling, expects to start making the new Renault Captur and Mégane by the end of 2020.
False selfemployed THE National Statistics Institute (INE) has reclassified as salaried 143,500 workers who initially declared themselves as self-employed in the second quarter of 2019. This figure is 9,200 persons lower than that recorded in the first quarter, when the INE detected 152,700 people falsely declared as self-employed. In short, in the first half of th e y e a r almo s t 3 0 0 , 000 pe ople were in this situation. If we compare the data for the second quarter of this year with that of the same period of the previous year, the self-employed reclassified as employees fell by 26.5 per cent. Meanwhile, between April and
June of this year, the INE counted 98,700 inde pe nde nt w orke rs or businessmen without employees who work almost exclusively for one client, although they attend to others when they arise. This figure is low e r tha n both the pre vious quarter, when there were 104,400 people, and the figure recorded in the s e c ond qua rte r of 2018 (112,300). Thus, in the light of INE data, more people are self-employed but recognise that they work for a single client and, as a consequence, have been considered by Statistics as employees. LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I TRULY am heartily sick and tired of being made to feel guilty for being in the majority. It is no fault of mine that I am a heterosexual male, perfectly at ease with my gender. Frankly I don’t care how anyone else chooses to lead their existence. I don’t care if men want to dress in frocks, Botox their bums, walk around in six-inch heels with light bulbs up their noses or use ladies toilets. Personally I couldn’t care less. Do anything you like. Live however you want. Just stop trying to convince me that living this type of existence is the ‘norm!’ By constantly trying to shove these gender bender ideals down everyone’s throats and endeavouring to convince us it’s all terribly normal, is inferring that those of us (the majority!) who lead rather more mundane and heterosexual existences - are actually abnormal. And frankly that offends me. Did it ever dawn on all of the gender benders that are hell bent on ‘changing society,’ that the reason we are described as the ‘silent majority’ is because we are perfectly happy with our lot. It’s only those who are utterly insecure with their chosen paths that feel the need to make the most noise and create all the furore.

What is not realised is that by making a completely over the top spectacle of themselves and thrusting their beliefs onto society through demonstrations and outrageous actions, they are actually alienating themselves from many who may otherwise be more sympathetic to their cause.
So do us all and yourselves a favour. Tone it down a bit. Enjoy and try to be comfortable in your bodies. Show the majority a little respect. Please don’t try to force us to accept outrageous and utterly over the top behaviour as the ‘norm.’ Most of us are perfectly happy the way we are. We would also like to keep the whole
controversial issue out of our innocent classrooms - if you get my drift! Oh, and by the way, before those who disagree with my views start writing in accusing me of being homophobic, please make sure you have interpreted my piece correctly. Personally I’ve always loved a bit of drag, just don’t want it shoved down my throat, that’s all. At the time of writing I have no idea how the circumstances of tragic teenager Nora Quoirin will turn out; but quite frankly, if the Malaysian authorities expect us to believe that a 15-year-old girl with severe special needs, is able to trek shoeless, through one and a half miles of thick jungle, and be discovered 10 days later completely naked and displaying just a few leg bruises - had actually managed it under her own steam, they must have taken leave of their senses. We all understand you have to protect your tourist industry, but credit us all with a little intelligence and get to work finding those who actually did commit this heinous and horrific abduction. Businesswoman opens her heart F O R M E R restaurateur, T V stylist and writer Lisa Burgess has revealed how she feels her life has come to a dead end after being diagnosed with cancer, and is calling on the public to help her rebuild her life. Here’s her story in her own words…. I hit rock bottom very recently. So low I couldn’t see a way out of my situation. I felt I was a burden to everyone. I found a lump under my arm last September, 2018. Thought nothing of it, but my partner Joffrey Charles insisted I see a doctor. I almost wished I hadn’t. I was immediately whisked to a radiologist who blurted out in unrecognisable words “you have THE cancer.” It wasn’t just one tumour but 15. I immediately had a 10-hour operation including a mastectomy. I was living in full blown denial zone. The only serious laugh I had was after my operation the surgeon prescribed me paracetamol. I was in agony so my retort was “if someone cut off your penis would you prescribe that?” I then got proper medication and all the care here in Spain has been top notch even with my minimum ‘palabras.’ M y partner and I owned a F rench restaurant in La Cala (Costa del Sol). I’ve had eight months of chemo and this week start radiotherapy. When Joffrey lost his job last week I felt I couldn’t take any more. People can be so utterly mean. That’s where Michel Euesden and the Euro Weekly News come in. I reached out for help. Michel got Joffrey a job interview
and suggested a crowd funding page and a cancer benefit which won’t just be for me but other sufferers. I’m a real person, in need of real help. National Service LEAPY LEE, I know you have no hankering to be a politician but I wish more of ‘them’ would display a modicum of your common sense and ‘bottle.’ I could find no fault with your recent ‘What If’ manifesto; it was well thought out and presented, and only the socially inept could have found fault with any of it. Your most recent article in response to an ill-informed individual, with regards to the reintroduction of some form of National Service has inspired me to write to you. I am an ex-Infantryman who later became a firefighter and am proud to have voluntarily served both country and community. In the 1960s I was an indolent, disrespectful and troublesome inner city teenager with no ambition or direction in life. Any kind of jobs were scarce in my city and so I headed to the Army Recruiting Office one day... and it was one of the better decisions I have ever made in life. Your ignorant correspondent is totally wrong in thinking the Army churns out trained killers. It instills a sense of self discipline and absolute self-worth and confidence that lasts a lifetime. Perhaps it is people like your ‘ignorant correspondent’ who would have benefited most from a spell of National Service. But in closing let me point out that some European countries do have some form of National Service based on community service rather than military training. If only Mr Ignoramus had studied this subject a little deeper before writing to you. Chris Kelly

A thought for the firemen THIS year is turning into a disastrous year when it comes to forest fires, with more than 57,000 hectares burned in Spain so far. And we haven’t even reached the end of August yet. This is more than three times more than in the same period of 2018. As this leader is being written, 9,000 people on Gran Canaria have been evacuated while 500 firefighters do their utmost to save their homes and the beautiful forests of the island. Hundreds more have been forced out of their properties on the Costa del Sol where another fire rages. For these people it must be a truly horrifying time. While they may be safe - and the authorities are to be commended for having plans in place to deal with such natural disasters - the worry of not knowing if they will have a home to return to must be a heavy one indeed. Apart from the capricious whims of nature, the only hope many people have for their possessions - in many cases quite literally everything they own - is the skill, endurance and bravery of the emergency services. And dangerous work it is too. Over the years many firefighters have died when trapped by the flames by a sudden change of wind. Pilots of the firefighting planes are at high risk too as they bombard the flames with water. We send them all our thanks and our prayers too.

JORIS PLU THE power of cats and dogs towards us human beings is enormous! We can easily call them fantastic counsellors with fur. No? They can, if you allow them, teach us so much about life in general. Each time I have spent time with an animal, any animal, I shake my head thinking to myself… these wonderful creatures can teach us humans so much about love, compassion, forgiveness. For instance dogs have special listening skills. Have a look at children and even adults how they ‘talk’ to dogs and how dogs just listen to them. Not judging. The power of listening, just being in the moment is extraordinary. Even between humans. Only we can talk back and we do most of the time. So dogs are teaching us how to really listen. Little children sometimes talk for minutes with a dog or a cat.
The cat most of the times runs away after a while. That is why they are called cats and not dogs. But back to the dogs and children. Next time you see this happening, watch them closely. See what happens and feel the energy between them. We may use the word amazing since that is what it is. In some hospitals they use dogs just to be with patients. Let them sit on the bed or wheelchair. You see them interact, giving love and attention. You see how patients start to smile, have their feel good hormone working harder and harder. Just being happy. Dogs decrease levels of stress hormones, lower blood pressure and many more things. Petting a dog will do so much more to our body… and theirs. It’s the same with cats, only slightly different. People love the way they purr. Some say it also releases stress and even pain. Cats

are more independent then dogs and that is why so many people just love them. They exist in a way they want to, in control of their own life. Some time ago a man told me he did not know if he likes a cat more over a dog but he said he liked one thing and that was the lesson a cat
gave him which was living a more independent life, following his own soul instead of following the
crowd. For me this was a very nice way of defining a cat. Why did I want to write this small column about dogs and cats? Because they have power! Look at them, talk to them, just be with them. Learn from them. Even if you are not so comfortable being very close to them, give yourself the chance to notice them longer then you ever did before in your life. Feel their power and put a big smile on your face since they prolong your life in a unique and good way. Let us be thankful for them living with us on this planet. Life would be totally different without them. Maybe there would be no life without them. Love animals. All of them.

SWIMMING is one of the best forms of exercise. Swimming burns calories and can help a person to lose weight, as well as tone muscles and improve overall health and fitness. By engaging several different muscle groups and the cardiovascular system, swimming can provide an excellent workout for a wide variety of individuals, no matter what age you are. Here in Spain, access to swimming pools is good. If we do not have pools ourselves, the vast majority of municipalities have public pools and failing that there is always the sea for a swim. Swimming is one of the only exercises that utilises all your muscle groups while constantly stimulating the heart rate. You are also unlikely to be injured whilst participating due to its low-impact nature. Like any aerobic exercise, it is necessary to swim consistently for best results. Most people who want to get in or to stay in shape make an effort to do some form of training three to five times a week for 20 minutes or more per session. Suppose you can swim for 20 minutes, with generous

breaks at each end of the pool. You should plan on swimming for 30 minutes, then, so that your actual exercise time (as opposed to rest time) ends up around 20 minutes. To begin with, try to swim a minimum of three times a week, for about half an hour. Try swimming for as much of
that time as you can, and count your lengths. You should be able to cover anywhere from 20 to 30 lengths, at least. If you are capable of doing more, you should be swimming for longer periods of time, perhaps 45 minutes or even an hour. Try also to vary your
strokes between front crawl, breast stroke and back stroke to ensure that virtually every single muscle group in your body is used. Advanced swimmers might even want to add a few laps of butterfly into their routine. One last point, lying on a lilo with a gin and tonic does not count as swimming!

Three quarters of these are in a letting pool, which is run as a hotel by our managing agent, who is also the community administrator. Because of the conflict of interest and complicated money transfers, we agreed by a large majority at the AGM to split the residential community from the letting business. Our administrator disagreed so we called an EGM, which we won. We also had a notary and our lawyer attend. Now the administrator will not give us the official minutes book, which we need to get the minutes registered. Aside from general markets around the island, there are also municipal markets in central Palma that sell fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, wine and other food to local residents. Santa Catalina Market is one of the most popular in Palma and attracts locals, restaurant owners and tourists in search of fresh produce, local wines or some lunch in one of the many tapas kiosks inside. On Saturdays the market is teeming with people as the famous, or perhaps infamous, ‘Tardeo’, begins here with hordes of Spanish locals beginning a daytime bar crawl from one of the restaurants near the market. In the Old Town of Palma you will find the Mercat Olivar which, similar to Santa Catalina Market, sells fresh produce and local delicacies. Visitors to this market can enjoy a glass of cava and some oysters at the cava bar inside and then pop to the Mercadona upstairs for your general shopping. Interestingly there is a restaurant inside that will cook anything that you buy in the market or Mercadona to order - definitely beats cooking yourself! Foodies looking for a market experience should head to the San Juan Gastronomic Market in S’Escorxador. This converted slaughterhouse offers open, communal dining with over 20 full time food stalls serving everything from tapas to Thai, ponchos to Peking duck. There are activities and events throughout the year to entertain the crowds and often live music is played at the weekend as people dine. Whatever it is you are looking for from a market, Mallorca really does have something for everyone. Be sure to visit a market inland for a true Mallorcan experience, sip cañas and dine your way through the Gastronomic Market at least once.

If there is a November election because two groups of knowledgeable and - in some cases experienced people cannot reach agreement over who will do what in a hypothetical government, the PSOE and Unidas-Podemos parties should prepare for a punishment vote. Roughly 7.5 million people voted for the PSOE and about half that for Unidas Podemos last April. Had they wanted a return to the mid-70’s they would have voted for the Partido Popular, for Ciudadanos and, heaven forfend, for Vox who would have opted for the same threesome they have created in Andalucia, Murcia and Madrid where none was the most-voted party. This could happen nationally next November because the people the PSOE and UnidasPodemos expect to vote for them

It’s not likely to happen but it looks good and plays nicely to the gallery, especially those who rightly feel that Cs have sold out to Vox.

Straight down the middle ALBERT RIVERA’S dislike of Spain’s acting president Pedro Sanchez is increasingly personal, not political, as his refusal to meet him demonstrates. It’s not easy to discern what Rivera hopes to achieve with an enmity that was magnified by Sanchez’s elevation to president when the PSOE was at its lowest ebb and Cs at its highest. Rivera, but not his party, is listing to starboard when he could do far more harm to Sanchez and Pablo Casado’s PP by staying on course in the Centre. He needs to attract the undecided who ultimately decide elections, but instead he’s sending them anywhere but Cs.
From dinosaurs to chickens and birds PETER PURVEY TODAY, modern science tells us that that the dinosaurs became extinct some 65 million years ago following earth’s cataclysmic collision with a huge asteroid. Nothing could be further from the truth ! True, Tyrannosaurus Rex and many other huge members of his species did disappear about this time, but for three hundred million years earlier many had been undergoing a monumental change; their skins, previously covered with a soft downy substance which were slowly turning into feathers. In an area of NE China the geologic record is beginning to reveal the transition of feathered dinosaurs, from simply being able to glide from tree to tree to the discovery of the skeleton of a fourwinged dinosaur which astonished experts. By about 220 million years ago some developed a bat-like leathery membrane which may have helped it to become airborne. These so-called flying reptiles called Pterosaurs were the first vertebrates to gain flight; their later,

Between 150 and 120 million years ago rare fossil skeletons depict the earliest recognisable bird, named Archaeopteryx, but still revealing its dinosaur ancestry. One, nicknamed the ‘dragon dinosaur’ appeared to have a feathery ruff around its neck; the delicate tracery of its wing feathers clearly visible in the limestone. It would
have been about the size and appearance of a large turkey. but probably flightless. From the bones of a T Rex which was found more frozen than fossilized, scientists have extracted proteins and compared them to various modern vertebrates. Those with the closest similarity were found in ostriches and chickens. The conclusion was that the humble chicken was T Rex’s closest living rela-
tive and the smaller, increasingly birdlike dinosaurs, survived the great extinction of 65 million years ago and evolved into every flying creature that you see today. Not surprising, really, when you consider that dinosaurs made nests and reproduced by laying eggs. So if you want to see the remains of the dinosaurs, LOOK UP ! There’s a lot of them about and we eat the eggs.
Strange, but true ! Sometime before the start of the First World War, three friends were enjoying a boisterous day out. Come evening it began to rain heavily. Soaking wet, inebriated and almost out of money they entered a nearby hotel. The manager, viewing them with the greatest suspicion, refused them a room, but allowed them to sleep in the lounge. Come morning he made them sign the guest register. After they had left he saw that their surnames were… Edison, Firestone and Ford. Three men who were to revolutionise the world. The hotel still exists, now with a large plaque in the lounge to commemorate the event. To all chocoholics. It would appear that the origins of the use of chocolate can now be pushed back to a time of over 5,000 years ago. Residues found in ancient pottery suggest that the coco bean was farmed for food, medicine or a drink 5,000 years ago in Equador. When not to pay a deposit YOU’VE probably heard the rule: Save for a 20 per cent down payment before you buy a home. The logic behind saving 20 per cent is solid, as it shows that you have the financial discipline and stability to save for a longterm goal. It also helps you get favourable rates from lenders. Indeed, in Spain most banks require a minimum 20 per cent deposit before giving a mortgage. However, there are other lenders who will give up to 100 per cent loans, if you shop around. There can actually be financial benefits to putting down a smaller down payment rather than parting with so much cash up front, even if you have the money available.
PROPERTY professionals and future home buyers - will be watching a legal battle in the Valencian Community with interest. At the moment, the most widely used valuation used by regional governments when charging ITP tax (property transfer tax) is the ‘mortgage appraisal.’ It consists of valuing the taxpayer’s property using the appraisal value that appears in the mortgage loan deed. However, a ruling of the Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community, obtained by the law firm Ático Jurídico, considers that the appraised value has nothing to do in many cases with the actual value of the taxpayer’s home. The consequence is that the Valencian Community will now not apply this method. This method is used by several autonomous communities to verify the value declared by taxpayers when purchasing a property, whether by purchase, donation or inheritance. It takes as a reference the mortgage appraisal value for auction purposes that appears in the mortgage deed. Once the taxpayer pays the ITP or the Inheritance and Donations

I’m nothing like that, but the contents of my Sony Walkman says otherwise. Mixed in with jazz, it contains a vast number of hillbilly songs by artists ranging from Dolly Parton and Willy Nelson to relative newcomer, Steve Grand, a gay Chicago singer, songwriter and model who, to my mind is the sexiest man on the planet. Now while it’s true that rednecks are generally as dumb as breeze blocks, country music is anything but stupid, with the exception of mawkish religious songs such as Johnny Cash’s Being a Christian isn’t for Sissies. ‘She gets a stiffy when we grind / I think I’m dancing with a man.’ Raunchy songs, of course, go back decades and Cole Porter, a master of the suggestive lyric, raised the hackles of the BBC back in 1930 with his enduring Love for Sale. This was banned by the corporation for its ambiguity about prostitution: ‘If you want to buy my wares, follow me and climb the stairs...’ In 1937 George Formby’s With My Little Stick of Blackpool Rock was only allowed to be played with certain sections removed. In 1953 Frankie Laine’s Answer Me was condemned as ‘a sentimental mockery of Christian prayer’ for the lines: ‘Answer me, Lord above / Just what sin have I been
guilty of? Tell me how I came to lose my love. Please answer me, oh, Lord.’ Sadly missing from my extensive collection of amusing and sexy songs spanning almost 100 years is an album called ‘Ben Bagley’s Cole Porter Revisited Volume 1’ in which a variety of artists perform 14 little-known Porter numbers. It was first released in 1964 and re-released as a CD in 1983. I lost it in my move to Spain in 2010 and I dearly would love to get a replacement. I found one on Amazon’s American site for a whopping $36.98, but I am loathe to buy anything from the US because import duties in Spain can almost double the cost of an item. There’s one too on Amazon’s UK site for £28.74. Also available on the site is Volume 3 of the series which would set me back £167.90! If anyone out there has any or all of the Cole Porter Revisited series and is willing to part with them for around 20 quid each, I would be ever so grateful.
