Almeria celebrates ‘best days of the year’ 22 - 28 August 2019
“THE best days of the year in the best city in the world,” was how Almeria mayor Ramon Fernandez-Pacheco described this week’s festival in the provincial capital. The mayor promised the nine days of festivities in honour of the Virgen of the Sea would be “better than last year and worse than next.” Fernandez-Pacheco seemed unconcerned this year’s annual bash coincides with the Malaga City festival. “We have our own festival model,” he said in reference to the potential impact on visitor numbers. “It is totally different from other Andalucian festivals, and that’s what makes it special.” The mayor boasted Almeria “is a city which increasingly more people like, where everyone is welcome, and where everyone has the opportunity to fit in, share and enjoy.” He also praised locals for being “the best ambassadors for our sun, our sea, our tapas and our way of living life.” The festival programme

giving a free concert in the park next to the port. Saturday’s grand fireworks display will be at midnight at the La Termica breakwater.

Geode ‘universal marvel’ PULPI’S giant geode is a ‘universal natural marvel,’ commented acting Culture Minister Jose Guirao following a visit to the site. The acting minister toured more than 500 metres of galleries in the mine housing the eight metrelong, two metre-high natural phenomenon covered with huge gypsum crystals of extraordinary transparency. 47 THE JUCAR CANYON in the region of Castile-La Mancha is one of Spain’s lesser known natural wonders.
Spain’s forgotten canyon AROUND a two-hour drive from Alicante airport, one of Spain’s most stunning natural wonders lies in the depths of rural Castile-La Mancha. The Jucar Canyon is a 40km gorge that is carved through the Albacete countryside, with picturesque villages and luscious green forests lining the banks of the Jucar River that follows its path. The canyon is situated in an area known as La Manchuela. The
source of the canyon starts out as rich, fertile vegetable gardens and river vegetation. It soon transforms into a unique habitat, with woodland of juniper, pine and holm-oak perched on the side of the steep 100-metre high gorge sides. On the steeper sections the rocky outcrops are home to nesting birds of prey such as Griffon Vultures and Golden Eagles and the river is rich in aquatic and bird life. One of the most spectacular
sights along the gorge is the villages that are perched on top of the many meanders that the river takes. One of the most spectacular being the stretch between Valdeganga to the village of Villa de Ves. Although relatively unknown as a tourist destination, sports such as hiking, fishing, cycle-touring, kayaking are all practised on the river, and a number of lovely guest houses are situated along the length of the river.
Friends pinch jewellery Drug sales family affair FRIENDS of the family of a robbery victim in El Ejido are under arrest on charges of theft and fraud after the Guardia Civil recovered €4,500 worth of stolen jewellery from a gold shop. The Guardia detained a mate of the victim’s daughter and the friend’s boyfriend for taking the jewellery and a third person suspected of receiving the stolen items and passing them onto a fourth individual, who they said would have been hoodwinked into taking the bracelets, necklace and watch to a gold shop to sell. The investigation followed the victim’s report the jewellery was missing from their home, but there were no signs that doors had been forced or anything broken open. It emerged that the daughter’s friend and her other half had got their hands on a key to the property and hence access to the pieces, the Guardia said.

GUARDIA CIVIL are investigating six members of the same family after discovering a property in Velez-Rubio was being used for illegal drug sales. The investigation, prompted in part by information gathered from local residents, revealed activities at the property increased considerably at the weekend. There were constant comings and goings of people to buy drugs and a continual noise of cars, much to the concern of the neighbours, the Guardia Civil reported. The Guardia said the six detainees were suspected of managing the drug supplies and sales, and were all part of the family which lived in the property. A search of the premises resulted in the seizure of various amounts of illegal substances, including five grammes of marihuana, a gramme of cocaine and 40 grammes of hashish, as well as precision scales, a rifle and a lead truncheon.

Wastewater treatment plant priority THE expansion of the Mojacar wastewater treatment plant is an investment priority, the Andalucia government’s Agriculture, Fisheries and Sustainable Development regional minister assured the mayor during a visit to the municipality last week. Carmen Crespo went to see the treatment plant and the land earmarked for the €13 million enlargement project, accompanied by Mojacar mayor Rosa Maria Cano, Agriculture, Fisheries and Sustainable Development provincial delegate Aranzazu Marin and local councillor Francisco Garcia. The regional minister described the plant as an ‘essential infrastructure’ and underlined the Agriculture, Fisheries and Sustainable Development department’s commitment to a project which she said should have been actioned in 2007.
She said the department put great emphasis on the importance of increasing the treatment capacity in order to guarantee sanitation in the Levante area municipalities and cope with a predicted population of 53,800 by 2036. She also pointed out the need to update the purifications systems. “Mojacar’s treatment plant is one of the most important in the whole of Almeria, and what we the Andalucia government is doing now is to relaunch the expansion with the implementation of the process which will allow us to start the project as soon as possible,” Crespo commented. She revealed the provisional approval has now been signed and the plans would shortly be available for public information. “There is nothing more ecological than purifying our waste water,” Crespo added.
POPULAR: There has been an increase in the number of petanca clubs in the province in recent years. THE Diputacion de Almeria-organised petanca circuit is doing the rounds. The competition got going last weekend in Mojacar and Alhama de Almeria, and is being played out in 16 municipalities over the summer and autumn. Provincial Sports deputy Maria Luisa Cruz stressed that petanca is a popular sport throughout Almeria. The deputy said the provincial administration had been supporting and collaborating with municipalities in the organisation of their local events, and that “thanks to the work of the Diputacion’s sports experts, who have over the years been sewing this seed, this year we can offer a provincial circuit.”
She said it would maintain the ‘essence’ of local competitions, but would have a new format, “bringing together all the events in a unified circuit.” The Almeria delegate of the Andalucia Petanca Federation and national selector, Pepe Herrada, echoed the deputy’s point about the popularity of the sport in the province. He pointed out there had been considerable growth in the number of petanca playing area licences and in the creation of clubs in recent years. Herrada revealed two national championships are being staged in Almeria this year, as well as a junior European competition and an international junior event. He also underlined the broad appeal of the sport, remarking it is played by young and old. The provincial circuit is organised into three zones. The Bajo Andarax encompasses Alhama de Almería, Rioja, Benahadux and Viator. The Levante area is made up of Mojacar, Antas, which hosts a leg of the circuit this Sunday August 25, Carboneras, Velez Blanco, Velez Rubio and Cuevas del Almanzora. The Almanzora zone matches will be played in Cantoria, Zurgena, Seron, Tijola, Macael and Olula del Rio. The top four from each zone will classify for the final, which will be played on November 24. Registration to take part in the circuit costs €5 and can be done at the host municipality town halls or through the Diputacion or the petanca federation.

The mayor described the park as “an important project for the town, as it encompasses such features as
the inclusion of people with functional diversity and a bio-he a lth a re a s o tha t adults can enjoy areas like this.” He stressed that features for children like the pirate boat are also “completely inclusive” and accessible by “people with different capacities.” He continued, “this was the main aim as our town is for everyone, without ex-
ception, and sport and fun in public s pa c e s like this should be at the reach of all residents, without distinction.” The newly opened Picasso park is the first of five of its kind planned for the municipality. Further features include gardens with native species, a water efficient irrigation system and low energy consumption LED lighting.
Municipal indoor pool reopening imminent CUEVAS DEL ALMANZORA Council is immersed in the final details for the reopening of the municipal indoor swimming pool. The local authority said it expected the pool to be ready for public use this month following a series of updates and works to make the facilities energy efficient. Also that people will be able to sign up for organised activities and swimming classes imminently.
The council further revealed the municipality will this year be the base for the province’s most important swimming club, the Mare Nostrum. The works on the pool, which included installing solar panels, putting down anti-slip tiles, and improving air-conditioning, plumbing and electrical systems, were co-financed by the Junta de Andalucia and the European Regional Development Fund.

Station returned to former glory THE old Almanzora railway station has been returned to its former glory following Cantoria Council’s €200,000 restoration of the building to convert it into a multiple uses centre. The structure now has a large social hall for celebrating public events and a public information office offering a bilingual service to cater to the area’s sizeable English-speaking population. There is also a modern café-bar with a spacious terrace on what had been the platform used by travellers on the Granada-Murcia line during the century the service functioned up to 1985. Overseen by architect Jorge Espinosa, the station’s original appearance has been restored, while the interior has been given a more contemporary look, including materials like natural stone from local companies.

Spread the Almanzora word TOURISM businesses in the Almanzora Valley have launched new food and leisure guides aimed at spreading the word about the region’s attractions and encouraging more people to visit. ‘Sabores del Almeria’ (Flavours of Almeria) is based on the premise gastronomy is one of the main reasons for visiting an area, tourists and travellers relishing the opportunity to try local specialities made from regional produce. The publication is the result of several months’ work. It features photos and descriptions of a selection of the most typical tapas and main courses in Almanzora towns and villages. They range from contemporary-style Macael black pudding with goat’s cheese and mandarin glaze, roasted ribs with citrus and Filabres honey, and leg of lamb with spinach cream, mushroom and rocket to seriously traditional soups and stews. Internet investment THE regional government is investing just over €40,000 in internet coverage for Partaloa. The subsidy for extending latest generation broadband coverage is part of the Junta de Andalucia’s Economy Depart-

The guide also suggests discovering locations like Seron, Laroya, Oria, Barcares and Urrucal, learning about the stars on an astronomy tour and taking a dip in the thermal waters of the Cela pool near Tijola.

Catalan elections not ruled out GUILTY verdicts for Catalan separatists facing charges that include rebellion and misappropriation of public funds could trigger an early regional election. Oriol Junqueras, president of the Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) party, has been imprisoned on remand since November 2017 following the regional parliament’s unilateral declaration of independence of October 27. This came to nothing and the PDeCat leader and former regional president Carles Puigdemont fled Spain two days later, followed by other members of the regional government. Twelve who remained stood trial earlier this year and await verdicts due to arrive after the summer break. “Calling elections is an option that cannot be rejected,” Junqueras told a radio interviewer. The other pro-independence party PDeCat is unconvinced, especially its leader Carles Puigdemont who now lives in Waterloo (Belgium). With ERC overtaking Puigdemont’s party in the last general elections and continuing to rise in the polls, the former regional president considers this would result in his PDeCat successor and protégé - Quim Torra heading a weakened acting government. Equally important, but unspoken, is the likelihood of an ERC overall majority that would weaken Puigdemont’s own grip.

Car ring smashed NATIONAL POLICE in Malaga have dismantled a gang dedicated to the theft of high-end vehicles in Germany. Eleven cars valued at more tha n €1 million have been recovered and three people of Danish, US and Spanish nationality arrested in ‘Operation Turbo.’ The y a re a c c us e d of misappropriation, fraud and theft. Prince touches down PRINCE ANDREW touched down in Malaga last week with his ex-wife amidst fresh scrutiny surrounding his relationship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein. The duo were seen getting off a private jet at Malaga airport before being whisked away in a limousine to a luxury Sotogrande resort where they have holidayed regularly since 2009. The Prince is said to be ‘panicked’ due to previous connections he had with the Ameri-
can, and that he has been accompanied by his ex-wife so she can ‘look after him’ and show the world their solidarity together. They are staying at a €38 million estate they regularly holiday in, set amongst the hills around Sotogrande. It is reported to include over 350 acres of land including a polo pitch, parkland, woodland and lakes, and is surrounded by a 12-foot perimeter fence to maintain complete privacy.
Mid-flight nightmare ENGINEER Alan Wild’s flight to Tenerife was turned into a nightmare when a drunken passenger sparked panic after attempting to open the emergency exit mid-flight. Alan, 47, an engineer from Cheshire, reported his story to
UK press after the drunken passenger boarded his flight. He told press he could “hear some commotion going on at the front door... basically this guy got on the plane and was hammered.” Although he was reportedly
abusive and loud towards the airline staff he was still permitted to board the plane, much to the disbelief of the rest of the passengers. He sat himself down in the emergency exit seat, and although told to move, he remained seated and the plane took off. Half an hour into the flight he vomited down himself and all over the aircraft floor. Fellow passengers saw that he had drunk three quarters of a bottle of whisky. Alan explained that he was terrified that the man would damage the emergency door next to where he was sitting, adding that “he sat there spitting on the floor and hanging off the emergency exit door. His arms were all over it.” According to Alan, the cabin crew seemed unfazed by the incident, claiming they have to deal with disruptive passengers all the time. Ryanair has recently imposed a ban on all duty free booze being taken on board flights with extra security police checks at the gates.

Brutal assault A 51-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested after he allegedly raped and brutally battered a young prostitute who refused to perform certain sexual practices. Police say the detained man went to a club in LogroĂąo (La Rioja) to demand sexual services. When these were not forthcoming, he beat the victim, who was unknown to him, so severely her jaw was broken. To escape his assault the victim had to lock herself in the bathroom at which point the man left the premises. A man fitting his description was tracked down by police and arrested in another club a few days later.

Illegal beach rave AN investigation has taken place into an illegal rave that took place in the early hours of Sunday morning on the beach of Cala Sa Boadella in the Girona town of Lloret de Mar. Around 150 people attended the get together where loud music could be heard emanating from a secluded cove.
Authorities were called after a taxi driver was alerted by large congregations of people in the area. Around 12 officers were dispatched to the scene and in total; five people have been identified as the so- called organisers of the event. Although the ring leaders have not been arrested,
procedures have been put in place to sanction them with fines of up to â‚Ź100,000. Music equipment and a PA system have also been confiscated and an investigation is still underway. It is thought that the party was put together through social media channels.

Corbyn intent on stopping No Deal JEREMY CORBYN has stated in a recent speech that he will not let Boris Johnson ‘crash out’ of the EU without a deal by calling for another election after they hold a vote of no confidence. Corbyn compared Johnson to Trump in his speech, a likeness that drew the Conservatives to respond in turn by referring to this attempt to gain power as a ‘cynical’ move to ‘dither.’ Cor-
byn expressed that Labour is morally obliged to take the situation into their own hands and capitalise on the aftermath of the vote of no confidence to avoid what he has termed a ‘Trump Deal Brexit.’ The vote of no confidence is scheduled to take place early October before the UK is supposed to be taken out of the EU. If Johnson cannot secure his position as prime minister in
the two weeks after the first vote, Corbyn will have an opportunity to stop the Conservative government from forcing the UK out of the EU. Johnson believes that he will still have the power to do so whilst the second vote is in situ. The Labour party has agreed that Jeremy Corbyn cannot control a majority vote in parliament if the Conservative lose the vote of no confidence. Brexit spokesperson Tom Brake has called for Corbyn to stand down if this is the case and back a new leader who will ultimately have more success in the house. Corbyn has refused to relinquish his position after a vote of no confidence is passed and has urged all those in the remain camp to get on board with his plan.

Hammond has vehemently denied any involvement in this alleged intentional move to undermine Johnson and his team before important negotiations with the EU. Making provisions IN his latest speech Jeremy Corbyn has cited new leaked documents pertaining to an operation aimed at making provisions necessary to keep the supply of some vital medicines and food steady in post-Brexit Britain. The documents for the operation entitled ‘Yellowhammer’ suggest that the UK will have problems importing some vital medicines and some fresh food after leaving the EU. Michael Gove - the minister in charge of making sure that in a no-deal scenario Britain’s assets and economy is secure - has been reported as saying that operation Yellowhammer denotes the worst case scenario. He claims that he and his team are making sufficient efforts to stop severe delays in receiving medicine and food. According to various government sources however, the leaked documents mention that the worst case scenario is the scenario most likely to transpire.
Farming news MP Owen Paterson has claimed that when the UK leaves the EU farmers will be able to better plan funding to cover their costs and they will not have to compete with the European farmers who will be able to significantly undercut them.

Two girls are recording themselves at some kind of event and as one twirls round on the camera, a man drops a pill into her cup without her consent and without her even noticing. Neither the girl or her friend have any idea about what has just happened and she continues sucking her lollypop, oblivious. The video raises awareness about drugs at festivals/parties warning partygoers to be extremely vigilant with their drinks.

Disastrous year for fires IT has been a disastrous year for wildfires in Spain with more than 57,000 hectares burned so far, more than triple the amount of the same period in 2018. Fire has destroyed a total of 57,697 hectares up until August 11, making 2019 the fifth worst year of the decade in terms of forest fires with four months of the year still to go. Data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fish-
eries and Food show that in just one week from August 4 to 11, 254 fires destroyed 1,198 hectares. Since then a major fire has been raging in Gran Canaria and another on the Costa del Sol. So far this year 43.70 per cent of the fires occurred in the northwest, 39.28 per cent in the interior communities, 16.53 per cent on the Mediterranean coasts and 0.49 per cent in the Canary Islands.

The couple, originally from Guinea, were arrested in Palma for allegedly assaulting their young daughters for not wanting to wear the Islamic veil or practise the Muslim religion. National Police arrested the couple on Monday for crimes of abuse, child abuse and causing injury. St a f f a nd t e a c h er s a t th e c h ild ren ’s school, PAC Escola Graduada in Palma, Mallorca informed the authorities that they suspected the children were being mistreated. The girls, aged 12 and 14, had numerous injuries and confirmed that they had been beaten by their own parents. One of the girls confirmed that her father repeatedly attacked them for refusing to wear the Islamic veil and not wanting to practise the Muslim religion. Walker hit by lorry A 60-YEAR-OLD man has been killed after he was hit by a lorry travelling on the A-357 at Campillos, Malaga. A spokesman for the Traffic Management Centre reported that the man was walking on the side of the
road at around dawn when he was struck by a truck travelling near the technology park. The event was reported by fellow road users in the early hours of Friday morning that a man had been injured at kilometre 61 of the
busy main road. Emergency services from the Guardia Civil, Local Police and the Public Health E m e rg e n c i e s C o m p a n y (EPES) attended the scene, but the man was already pronounced dead at the scene.
A SERIOUS fire broke out at a fish farm near the Sant Joan de Déu Hospital in Palma. The fire consumed an area of approximately 2,000 square metres of the Piscifactoria Balear last Thursday and is thought to have caused millions of euros worth of damage. The National Police has taken charge of the investigation to find out what caused the fire on the site of what was formerly the thermal power station of Sant Joan de Déu. Insurance experts are now working out the exact amount of losses caused by the fire. The fire, which began at around 1.30 am, affected the tanks of giltheads and sea bass in the fish farm and a metal structure with a plastic cover that houses various electrical installations. The fire was not brought under control until 6.30am. Fortunately no one was injured in the fire due to it happening at night and the nearby hospital got away unscathed.

Kidnapped doctor released THE Mexican Special Forces Unit (FAS) has apprehended a gang of kidnappers on the outskirts of Mexico City who held a Spanish ophthalmologist hostage for over two days. According to a police statement from the unit i n M e x i c o C i t y, t h e k i d n a p p e r s a b d u c t e d t h e Spaniard as he was leaving his home in the Lindavista area. The kidnappers were demanding a ransom of €250,000. Luckily for him though, the police had been following the criminal group for some time and were able to quickly and accurately locate the house where he was being held with the help of the network of security cameras around the city. Ten officers raided the kidnappers’ house in Temamatla in Mexico State and apprehended the suspects belonging to the notorious ‘Las Guerreras’ gang without a bullet being fired. The couple claimed to have purchased the items from a collector on the Costa Brava. Upon investigation the seller confirmed the story and was found to also have possession of mortars and shells which have also been confiscated. Spanish police said the couple are very lucky as the items, without proper transportation care could have detonated. The Spanish Public Prosecution Service is investigating.
Less youngsters smoking SPAIN has one of the highest percentages of smokers in Europe. So much so that the French-Spanish state Andorra is the country with the highest cigarette consumption per year per person in the world according to a World Health Organisation survey. However, a recent study has shown teenagers are more than 18 per cent less likely to start smoking than they were 17 years ago.
The study edited by Socidrogalcohol collected data from 51,046 test subjects from 2002 to 2018, all of whom were aged between 15 and 18. The study found that 26.5 per cent of this age group were smoking regularly in 2002, but by the time 2018 came around, only 8.7 per cent of the youngsters had started smoking on a regular basis.

Donating blood in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. In Spain, Blood Components and Services are provided by 17 Regional Blood Transfusion Services. Despite their autonomous operations management, every regional service is fully incorporated into a unique and common Public National Health System, supplying a cohesive blood transfusion care to all citizens, residents, and visitors in Spain based on 100 per cent voluntary and non-remunerated blood donation. For more general information, visit www.msps.es. Anyone who has lived continuously in the UK between 1980 and 1996 (a minimum of one year) will not be able to donate blood in Spain due to the risk of transmitting mad cow disease. Similarly, there are restrictions if you have received a blood transfer in the UK. However, each region may have different rules about donation. Call the donation helpline on 935 573 500. Alternatively, visit www.donorsang.gencat.cat to find out if you are eligible. If you are eligible, you can give blood at your local hospital, or via the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja) at one of their clinics, or in one of their mobile units. You can check dates and locations by visiting www.donarsangre.org. A donor card is not necessary to give blood. On the first visit you will have to provide DNI, NIE, passport or a driving licence. If you are already registered in the Blood Bank, you only need a donor card or a document with your name and surname. The process of blood donation takes just 10 minutes in which 450 ml are collected (equating to 10 per cent of the total blood circulation of an adult person). Despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain blood is through the generosity of the public. The blood is carefully screened for disease to make sure it is safe. After a tattoo, you must wait four months to be eligible to donate. After surgery, the exclusion period will depend on the type of intervention. After minor surgical procedures, you cannot donate blood for seven days or until you are fully recovered. After undergoing major surgery, you will not be able to donate blood for four months. The rarest blood type is AB, present in 1 per cent of Caucasians, according to research by the America Red Cross. Blood transfusions are carried out daily in Spanish hospitals with more than 6,200 patients being given them, of whom almost a quarter are fighting cancer and a similar figure receiving transfusions during or after surgery. Body found in gender violence case POLICE officers have discovered the body of a woman in a home in Madrid with signs of suspected gender violence on Calle Tenerife in the Tetuan district of the city. According to reports from the Police Headquarters, the victim was found with heavy bruising to the head and stab wounds. The body was discovered after an 091 call was made at around 12.20pm last Friday. Officers were called to the scene from the Scientific Police Brigade and from the Homicide Group to confirm the injuries and to remove the body for autopsy. The police are currently investigating.
Forced prostitution NATIONAL POLICE have arrested a Romanian couple in Beniganim, Valencia for allegedly forcing a young
woman of the same nationality into prostitution by threatening her with violence.
Longest slide removed THE longest slide in Spain measuring in at 38 metres high has been removed from the Los Niños park in Estepona, Costa del Sol, amid safety concerns. The company which built the slide was forced to dismantle the slide by the town hall after several people injured themselves on the way down. They were offered the chance to revise the slide and to certify it as safe in the eyes of the law, but the building company couldn’t effectively guarantee the safety of everybody using it. The slide was originally installed to bring attention to the surrounding area which is a park designated for further development in an area of about 38,000 sqm. With lots of greenery such as pines plus new infrastructure including lighting and irrigation, the Los Niños park has required a large sum of public money to bring it to life. The slide however, was a product of the building company that is trying to promote further development in the area, so it will not cost the taxpayer anything to take it down.
She was originally promised lucrative work and a better lifestyle in Spain by the detained couple. She subsequently moved with them from Romania thinking that she would be taken care of, but she was instead forced to work 10 hours a day in an isolated house offering her body for sex. All of the money went to the couple, so in effect she was a sex slave. The young woman has told police that she was often raped by her captor and she was forced to have two abortions during her time in the country. She was also regularly beaten according to the police who noticed several wounds and bruises. Police raided the couple’s house after suspected prostitution was reported and found the woman. The Court of Valencia has remanded the couple in custody after they were charged with several counts of sexual abuse, coercion and violence.

Airport strikes
IBERIA workers at Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport have announced four days of strikes on August 24, 25, 30 and 31. According to trade union UGT, as in July the strikes are in protest at the lack of sufficient staff to meet real needs and the ‘systematic failure’ by the company to meet previous agreements reached with staff. The main problems are, according to the union, the lack of permanent staff they need to increase the temporary workforce and the indiscriminate use of compulsory overtime.

Factories switch RETAIL giant Inditex has been reducing its number of manufacturing partners in Latin America and moving to Asia. Since 2015, the number of factories with which Inditex works have been cut by 96 per cent and 55 per cent in Brazil and Argentina respectively. At the same time the number of factories working for Inditex on a non-exclusive basis increased notably in Cambodia (43 per cent), China (40 per cent) and Bangladesh (35 per cent). China is the country with the highest number of plants associated with the company, 1,903.

Auditors cashing in THE Big Four received €312 million as auditors of Ibex companies in 2018, 11 per cent less than in 2015. Leading the way were PwC and KPMG who charged €148 million and €80 million respectively. They have been helped by the Accounts Audit Act, passed in July 2015, which was intended to encourage independence and competition between companies. Three years after its
entry came into force in June 2016, the status quo has changed radically and audits of Ibex companies, traditionally dominated by Deloitte, are now dominated by PwC, which verifies the accounts of a dozen companies. In 2018, PwC provided audit, verification and related services to Acerinox, Sabadell, Bankinter, CaixaBank, Cie, Colonial, Ence, Meliá, Repsol, Santander, Telefónica and Viscofan.

Low growth forecast FUNDS manager Pimco expects eurozone GDP to grow between 0.75 per cent and 1.25 per cent in 2019. With some countries in recession this represents a slowdown influenced by the significant downward pressure on the economy of weak world trade. Pimco’s forecasts are more pessimistic than those of the European Commission itself, which predicted growth of 1.2 per cent in 2019 for the euro area. In the second quarter, the single currency economy grew by just 0.2 per cent, half that of the first quarter, as confirmed this week by Eurostat. Germany’s economy contracted by 0.1 per cent. Further afield, Pimco considers that the yuan’s stability is ‘well anchored’ with a ‘patient’ Federal Reserve, which understands that this should be a component of the t r a d e a g re e m e n t b e tween China and the US. The European Central Bank (ECB) is preparing a major stimulus package against the weakness of the Eurozone, as recently announced by its president, Mario Draghi. It is trying to curb an ‘ever-worsening’ economic scenario. As for the United Kingdom, the fund manager has predicted real growth in the range of 1 per cent to 1.5 per cent in 2019, since it considers a nodeal Brexit ‘a low probability event.’

Vehicle production on the decline VEHICLE production in Spain, the second largest producer in Europe and the ninth largest in the world, continues to fall. Official data shows that up to the end of May, it had fallen by 5.6 per cent compared to the same period of 2018. Forecasts are for the decline to be between 3 per cent and 5 per cent of volume to about 2.7 million units by the end of the year, which would be the third consecutive year of falls. The main reason for this loss of production derives from the fall in demand of Spain’s main markets which are 90 per cent European. Leading the fall in sales has been Spain itself, which saw 5.7 per cent fewer registrations in the first six months of the year. Italy saw a decline of 3.5 per cent to 1.08 million registrations. Third was the United Kingdom with a decrease of 3.4 per cent, to 1.26 million units. In France, deliveries fell by 1.8 per cent to
1.16 million. Germany, the main European market, grew by 0.5 per cent to 1.84 million sales, but could not prevent sales in Europe as a whole from contracting by 3.1 per cent. This loss of demand is causing production adjustments at Spanish car plants. Mercedez-Benz Vitoria has reduced production of Class V and Vito vans by 6,000 units for this year. The Villaverde plant of the PSA Group is undergoing a process of temporary employment regulation (Erte) until 2020; and in the centre of Vigo, on the line that manufactures the Peugeot 301 and Citroën CElysée, another temporary employment agreement has been formalised until production of these models ends at the end of the year. Ford Almussafes has just announced another Erte that will affect all its workers until the end of the year, both in the car plant and in the engine plant. Iveco,
CNH Industrial’s truck manufacturer, has had another Erte since January 2018 at its Madrid plant. Nissan Barcelona is running an ERE for 600 people because of the low demand for the pick-ups it produces. And Nissan Avila has already stopped manufacturing trucks to become a plant producing spare parts. On the positive side, the Volkswagen group has just awarded its factory in Landaben a third model that will start production in the second half of 2021 and will guarantee 340,000 units per year in the medium term. In 2018 it produced 272,000 cars. Both VW Navarra and Seat Martorell will end the year with more production. Ford will manufacture battery packs in Almussafes from September 2020; and Renault, whose production in Valladolid and Palencia is falling, expects to start making the new Renault Captur and Mégane by the end of 2020.
False selfemployed THE National Statistics Institute (INE) has reclassified as salaried 143,500 workers who initially declared themselves as self-employed in the second quarter of 2019. This figure is 9,200 persons lower than that recorded in the first quarter, when the INE detected 152,700 people falsely declared as self-employed. In short, in the first half of th e y e a r almo s t 3 0 0 , 000 pe ople were in this situation. If we compare the data for the second quarter of this year with that of the same period of the previous year, the self-employed reclassified as employees fell by 26.5 per cent. Meanwhile, between April and
June of this year, the INE counted 98,700 inde pe nde nt w orke rs or businessmen without employees who work almost exclusively for one client, although they attend to others when they arise. This figure is low e r tha n both the pre vious quarter, when there were 104,400 people, and the figure recorded in the s e c ond qua rte r of 2018 (112,300). Thus, in the light of INE data, more people are self-employed but recognise that they work for a single client and, as a consequence, have been considered by Statistics as employees. LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I TRULY am heartily sick and tired of being made to feel guilty for being in the majority. It is no fault of mine that I am a heterosexual male, perfectly at ease with my gender. Frankly I don’t care how anyone else chooses to lead their existence. I don’t care if men want to dress in frocks, Botox their bums, walk around in six-inch heels with light bulbs up their noses or use ladies toilets. Personally I couldn’t care less. Do anything you like. Live however you want. Just stop trying to convince me that living this type of existence is the ‘norm!’ By constantly trying to shove these gender bender ideals down everyone’s throats and endeavouring to convince us it’s all terribly normal, is inferring that those of us (the majority!) who lead rather more mundane and heterosexual existences - are actually abnormal. And frankly that offends me. Did it ever dawn on all of the gender benders that are hell bent on ‘changing society,’ that the reason we are described as the ‘silent majority’ is because we are perfectly happy with our lot. It’s only those who are utterly insecure with their chosen paths that feel the need to make the most noise and create all the furore.

What is not realised is that by making a completely over the top spectacle of themselves and thrusting their beliefs onto society through demonstrations and outrageous actions, they are actually alienating themselves from many who may otherwise be more sympathetic to their cause.
So do us all and yourselves a favour. Tone it down a bit. Enjoy and try to be comfortable in your bodies. Show the majority a little respect. Please don’t try to force us to accept outrageous and utterly over the top behaviour as the ‘norm.’ Most of us are perfectly happy the way we are. We would also like to keep the whole
controversial issue out of our innocent classrooms - if you get my drift! Oh, and by the way, before those who disagree with my views start writing in accusing me of being homophobic, please make sure you have interpreted my piece correctly. Personally I’ve always loved a bit of drag, just don’t want it shoved down my throat, that’s all. At the time of writing I have no idea how the circumstances of tragic teenager Nora Quoirin will turn out; but quite frankly, if the Malaysian authorities expect us to believe that a 15-year-old girl with severe special needs, is able to trek shoeless, through one and a half miles of thick jungle, and be discovered 10 days later completely naked and displaying just a few leg bruises - had actually managed it under her own steam, they must have taken leave of their senses. We all understand you have to protect your tourist industry, but credit us all with a little intelligence and get to work finding those who actually did commit this heinous and horrific abduction. Pause for faith It’s funny how often I find friends questioning my Christian faith as being so unscientific, for one, like myself, who’s normally reckoned to have a logical mind. “So why”, I usually respond, “would you consider faith to be illogical?” For to me, faith is the extremely logical link that bridges many otherwise incomprehensible phenomena that defy my understanding. And before doubting my reasoning too much, I would suggest that all of us at times put our faith in people and things we don’t fully understand. For how many among us really understand how a large metal object is able to raise itself off the ground? Yet most of us are content to put our faith in the experts who design, build and fly aeroplanes, regularly committing ourselves to travel large distances by air. And in that faith, we all accept that an aircraft has to have been designed and built by an incredibly clever team of engineers; no way could it possibly have just materialised entirely by chance! That would be a
ridiculous suggestion! Yet many folk become that ridiculous when they consider the Universe and all that’s in it, suggesting that it and all living things on Earth merely happened by random chance. How much more logical is it that I, as a Christian, whilst unable to fully comprehend the incredible processes by which the universe was created, conclude that, like an aircraft, it was designed and built by a being of amazing ability and power? And that being I just happen to know as God. So I would suggest that if it is considered reasonable for us to put our faith in a fallible team of engineers as we fly around the world in their creation, then how much more reasonable is it for us to put our faith in the one who designed the entire universe? So no, I do not believe there is anything illogical about my faith in God. On the contrary, I really question the logic of those who deny the existence of God, and have no desire to learn more of this incredible creator.

COLOGNE was originally developed as protection against the plague. Herbs and flowers are bound together and placed inside the masks of plague doctors as most Europeans believed diseases were spread by bad smells. National Service LEAPY LEE, I know you have no hankering to be a politician but I wish more of ‘them’ would display a modicum of your common sense and ‘bottle.’ I could find no fault with your recent ‘What If’ manifesto; it was well thought out and presented, and only the socially inept could have found fault with any of it. Your most recent article in response to an ill-informed individual, with regards to the reintroduction of some form of National Service has inspired me to write to you. I am an ex-Infantryman who later became a firefighter and am proud to have voluntarily served both country and community. In the 1960s I was an indolent, disrespectful and troublesome inner city teenager with no ambition or direction in life. Any kind of jobs were scarce in my city and so I headed to the Army Recruiting Office one day... and it was one of the better decisions I have ever made in life. Your ignorant correspondent is totally wrong in thinking the Army churns out trained killers. It instills a sense of self discipline and absolute self-worth and confidence that lasts a lifetime. Perhaps it is people like your ‘ignorant correspondent’ who would have benefited most from a spell of National Service. But in closing let me point out that some European countries do have some form of National Service based on community service rather than military training. If only Mr Ignoramus had studied this subject a little deeper before writing to you. Chris Kelly

A thought for the firemen THIS year is turning into a disastrous year when it comes to forest fires, with more than 57,000 hectares burned in Spain so far. And we haven’t even reached the end of August yet. This is more than three times more than in the same period of 2018. As this leader is being written, 9,000 people on Gran Canaria have been evacuated while 500 firefighters do their utmost to save their homes and the beautiful forests of the island. Hundreds more have been forced out of their properties on the Costa del Sol where another fire rages. For these people it must be a truly horrifying time. While they may be safe - and the authorities are to be commended for having plans in place to deal with such natural disasters - the worry of not knowing if they will have a home to return to must be a heavy one indeed. Apart from the capricious whims of nature, the only hope many people have for their possessions - in many cases quite literally everything they own - is the skill, endurance and bravery of the emergency services. And dangerous work it is too. Over the years many firefighters have died when trapped by the flames by a sudden change of wind. Pilots of the firefighting planes are at high risk too as they bombard the flames with water. We send them all our thanks and our prayers too.

They can, if you allow them, teach us so much about life in general. Each time I have spent time with an animal, any animal, I shake my head thinking to myself… these wonderful creatures can teach us humans so much about love, compassion, forgiveness. For instance dogs have special listening skills. Have a look at children and even adults how they ‘talk’ to dogs and how dogs just listen to them. Not judging. The power of listening, just being in the moment is extraordinary. Even between humans. Only we can talk back and we do most of the time. So dogs are teaching us how to really listen. Little children sometimes talk for minutes with a dog or a cat.

The cat most of the times runs away after a while. That is why they are called cats and not dogs. But back to the dogs and children. Next time you see this happening, watch them closely. See what happens and feel the energy between them. We may use the word amazing since that is what it is. In some hospitals they use dogs just to be with patients. Let them sit on the bed or wheelchair. You see them interact, giving love and attention. You see how patients start to smile, have their feel good hormone working harder and harder. Just being happy. Dogs decrease levels of stress hormones, lower blood pressure and many more things. Petting a dog will do so much more to our body… and theirs. It’s the same with cats, only slightly different. People love the way they purr. Some say it also releases stress and even pain. Cats

are more independent then dogs and that is why so many people just love them. They exist in a way they want to, in control of their own life. Some time ago a man told me he did not know if he likes a cat more over a dog but he said he liked one thing and that was the lesson a cat

crowd. For me this was a very nice way of defining a cat. Why did I want to write this small column about dogs and cats? Because they have power! Look at them, talk to them, just be with them. Learn from them. Even if you are not so comfortable being very close to them, give yourself the chance to notice them longer then you ever did before in your life. Feel their power and put a big smile on your face since they prolong your life in a unique and good way. Let us be thankful for them living with us on this planet. Life would be totally different without them. Maybe there would be no life without them. Love animals. All of them.

Keeping it simple Swim yourself fit SWIMMING is one of the best forms of exercise. Swimming burns calories and can help a person to lose weight, as well as tone muscles and improve overall health and fitness. Swimming can provide an excellent workout for a wide variety of individuals, no matter what age you are. Here in Spain, access to swimming pools is good. If we do not have pools ourselves, the vast majority of municipalities have public pools and failing that there is always the sea. Swimming is one of the only exercises that utilises all your muscle groups while constantly stimulating the heart rate. You are also unlikely to be injured due to its low-impact nature. Like any aerobic exercise, it is necessary to swim consistently for best results. Most people who want to get in or to stay in shape make an effort to do some form of training three to five times a week for 20 minutes or more per session. Suppose you can swim for 20 minutes, with generous
breaks at each end of the pool. You should plan on swimming for 30 minutes, then, so that your actual exercise time (as opposed to rest time) ends up around 20 minutes. To begin with, try to swim a minimum of three times a
week, for about half an hour. Try swimming for as much of that time as you can, and count your lengths. You should be able to cover anywhere from 20 to 30 lengths. Try also to vary your strokes between crawl, breast stroke and back stroke.

THE days of bathroom cabinets packed with an array of skincare products could be over as British women grow tired of complicated facial skincare routines, according to the latest research from Mintel. Over the last year, almost three in 10 (28 per cent) women have reduced the number of products in their facial skincare routine, with young millennials aged 20-29 (54 per cent) most likely to have simplified their routines. In a move away from multi-step routines, the proportion of women using just one product to cleanse their face has risen from 25 per cent in 2018 to 28 per cent in 2019. Meanwhile, the proportion of women using four or more products to cleanse has fallen sharply from 26 per cent in 2018 to 18 per cent in 2019. The biggest facial cleansing casualties include facial cleansing wash (from 55 per cent to 50 per cent), as well as facial cleansing wipes (from 54 to 43) and facial toners (from 29 to 25). This comes as Mintel research reveals there has been a decline in the purchase of make-up, potentially led by reduced usage following the trend for naturally radiant skin. Indeed, some 31 per cent of women who wear make-up are buying colour cosmetics less frequently now compared to last year, and 19 per cent have spent less on the category in the last 12 months. Usage of facial care products has also taken a tumble in the last 12 months. The number of women using day cream/lotion declined from 66 per cent to 60 per cent; while night cream/lotion fell from 48 per cent to 44 per cent and blemish balm (BB), colour correct (CC) and daily defence (DD) cream slumped from 21 per cent in 2018 to 15 per cent in 2019. Overall, the women’s facial skincare market is expected to decline by nearly 1 per cent in 2019, falling to an estimated £1.16 billion from £1.17 billion in 2018.

Cordoba Salmorejo A COLD soup at this time of year is most welcome as I am sure you will agre e . Ga z p a c h o i s p ro b a b ly th e most f a m o u s, b u t t h is v e rs io n o f Salmorejo is a truly delicious soup, a definite contender to Gazpacho, and you would think that cream has been added. It has very few ingredients, the main one being fresh tomatoes, which is an important factor in the taste. Although we grow our own here at Olive Tree Farm, I realise not everyone i s a b l e t o . Sh o p b o u g h t o n es would suffice, obviously. But I decided this time, to test something out and m a d e i t u si n g a c a n o f s h o p bought tomato puree (Triturado), and it worked. It took only 10 minutes to make, but do chill for a couple of hours before serving. It is traditionally served with chopped hard boiled eggs and torn up pieces of Serrano ham and definitely more filling than Gazpacho. It is also a good way to make use of stale bread. • Ingredients 8 medium tomatoes (I used most of a large can of Triturado) 1 medium baguette - White middle part only (I used about two cups of bread) 1 c u p E x t r a Vi rg in O liv e O il (again, quality is important) 1 clove of garlic A splash of red wine vinegar or sherry vinegar A pinch of salt, I used Himalayan rock salt 2 hard boiled eggs, peeled Sliced or torn Serrano ham • Method If you are using fresh tomatoes, scald them by dropping them into boiling water for around 30-60 seconds, remove from the pan and then drop them into iced water. You can then easily remove the skin. Slice in half and remove the seeds. Blend the tomatoes for about a minute or so until creamy. Remove the white soft middle section from your baguettes and add

Free concert festival highlight A FREE concert by the Almeria City Orchestra is one of the highlights of this week’s festival in the provincial capital. The orchestra is performing music by Manuel de Falla, Stravinsky and Darius Milhaud in the Parque de las Almadrabillas with the ‘Cable Ingles’ mining platform as a backdrop at 10pm on Friday. The event is billed as a homage to Almeria. “With this performance we want to highlight the importance of the province, from the marble quarries to the fertile land of the hothouses, including the gastronomy in such a special year,” commented the orchestra’s British director Michael Thomas. “The setting will be unbeatable,” Thomas added.

them to the blended tomatoes. Push them into the blended tomatoes and
leave to soak for about four or five minutes. Now add the splash of vinegar, salt, and garlic and blend until the soup is an even creamy texture and the bread is completely blended in. Fina lly, s low ly a dd your oil whizzing as you go using a medium speed. You need to do this part quite slowly to allow it to emulsify, so don’t just add your oil all at once. Finally add one hard boiled egg and blend until incorporated. Taste and adjust levels of salt, vinegar, garlic, and bread. As required. NB: I didn’t quite use all the oil, and also only used about 4/5 of the can of Triturado saving some to adjust at the end, but it didn’t need it. To serve, add to a bowl and sprinkle some of the chopped boiled egg and Serrano ham on top along with a drizzle of olive oil.
AN exhibition of works by Myriam Vela Blanca runs at the Mojacar La Fuente Municipal Art Centre until the month end. One section features the artist’s works in wood, inspired by the Cabo de Gata natural park’s landscapes and native flowers. These works include watercolours and photography, giving a touch of the artist’s own personality to each piece. The deputy said the contract for the Tijola project, part of an €8 million provincial administration plan for Galasa water supplier municipalities in the Levante and Almanzora regions, has now been put out to tender. The project will affect 11 streets in the town (Sevilla, Madrid, Cadiz, Granada, Filabres, Virgen del Carmen, Alcalde Perez Arriaga, Juan de Austria, Ramon y Cajal, De La Cruz and Malaga), and will involve laying more than 1.5 kilometres of pipes and more than 230 new supply connections. The aim is to prevent water cuts and leaks.

Businesswoman opens her heart FORMER restaurateur, TV stylist and writer Lisa Burgess has revealed how she feels her life has come to a dead end after being diagnosed with cancer, and is calling on the public to help her rebuild her life. Here’s her story in her own words…. I hit rock bottom very recently. So low I couldn’t see a way out of my situation. I felt I was a burden to everyone. I found a lump under my arm last September, 2018. Thought nothing of it, but my partner Joffrey Charles insisted I see a doctor. I almost wished I hadn’t. I was immediately whisked to a radiologist who blurted out in unrecognisable words “you have THE cancer.” It wasn’t just one tumour but 15. I immediately had a 10-hour operation including a mastectomy. I was living in full blown denial zone. The only serious laugh I had was after my operation the surgeon prescribed me paracetamol. I was in agony so my retort was “if someone cut off your penis would you prescribe that?” I then got proper medication and all the care here in Spain has been top notch even with my minimum ‘palabras.’ My partner and I owned a French restaurant in La Cala (Costa del Sol). Our journey was filmed by Channel 4 which

It was first released in 1964 and re-released as a CD in 1983. I lost it in my move to Spain in 2010 and I dearly would love to get a replacement. I found one on Amazon’s American site for a whopping $36.98, but I am loathe to buy anything from the US because import duties in Spain can almost double the cost of an item. There’s one too on Amazon’s UK site for £28.74. Also available on the site is Volume 3 of the series which would set me back £167.90! If anyone out there has any or all of the Cole Porter Revisited series and is willing to part with them for around 20 quid each, I would be ever so grateful.

ROAD TEST by Nick Fletcher THE world’s all-time bestselling car is the Toyota Corolla with global sales of more than 44 million, and the latest version seems set to boost this remarkable sales total. The 2019 Corolla’s full-hybrid status - it can run on electric power only - gives it a head start on ‘mild’ hybrid rivals which do not store power, and new body styling gives the car a more purposeful look and a new chassis delivers a lower centre of gravity which improves ride quality and handling. Corolla prices start at €23,761 (£21,305) for reasonably kitted models, but you need to move up the range to get more comfort, convenience and safety features. My test model was an Excel specification which includes sat-nav, online connectivity, rear-view camera, dual-zone air-conditioning and partleather upholstery. Safety features include pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lanedeparture warning, auto high-

New Corvette Stingray
CHEVROLET has announced the details of the new Stingray, the brand’s first-ever production mid-engine Corvette. The new mid-engine layout gives the new Stingray: • Better weight distribution, with the rear weight bias enhancing performance in a straight line. • Better responsiveness and sense of control due to driver positioning closer to the front axle, almost on top of the front wheels. • The fastest 0-60 mph time of any entry Corvette, approximately three seconds when equipped with the Z51 package. • A racecar-like view of the road due to lower positioning of the hood, instrument panel and steering wheel. • An enhancement of Corvette’s traditional utility strengths, with dual trunks for a total of 357 litres of cargo volume, ideal for luggage or two sets of golf clubs. A supercar level of craftsmanship, premium materials and attention to detail were critical in designing every component of the Stingray. The new location of the engine is truly the focal point for the car ’s design. It’s the heart of this nextgeneration Corvette and it sits like a jewel in a showcase, visible through the large rear hatch window. The US version of the new Chevrolet Corvette Stingray goes into production in late 2019.
