Tourism doing just fine LIKES: Almeria’s beaches are one of the aspects of the province visitors like most.
TOURISM in Almeria Province is doing just fine, figures from the regional government suggest. The n u m b e r o f p e o p le visiting the province in the second quarter of the year totalled nearly 715,000, 5.2 per cen t m o r e t h a n i n th e s ame p e r i o d o f 2 0 1 8 , a c cordin g t o t h e An d a l u c ia Tourist Joint Survey. Nearly 60 per cent of the visitors to Almeria over the three months were Spanish,
of whom half were from Andalucia. Another 30 per cent were European Union citizens, and one in 10 were from other parts of the world. Service, wining and dining, beaches, national parks, landscapes, golf infrastructure, leisure options, traffic levels and accommodation were what tourists liked most about their time in this part of the country; 45 per cent of travellers said accommodation had exceeded
the ir e xpe c ta tions . The y were less full of praise for the province’s public transport system. The average length of a s ta y w a s 8.4 da ys , the longest for any of the Anda luc ia n provinc e s , a lthough 1.4 da ys dow n on last year. Ty p i c a l d a i l y s p e n d i n g added up to €61.9, which is around €8 below the regional average, and 7.6 per cent less than the second
quarter of 2018. More than 90 per cent of the visitors were in the province on holiday. The remainder travelled to Almeria to vis it fa mily a nd friends. Two out of three stayed in hotels and 27 per in apartments or villas. Almeria attracted 8 per cent of the visitors to Andalucia between the beginning of April and the end of June.

Something in the air A STRONG smell of marihuana and an unauthorised connection to the power network: the telltale signs of an illegal marihuana plantation, this time behind the walls of a Pechina farmhouse. Sure enough, when Guardia Civil raided the property they discovered more than 1,000 marihuana plants growing in various rooms and on patios. Officers also found 56 high power spotlights, nine air-conditioning units, extractors and other materials for maximising the plantation’s production, and seized a 12-calibre shotgun which had its serial number erased. A 19 and a 42-yearold are under arrest.

TELLTALE: The strong waft of marihuana emanating from the farmhouse was a clear sign there was an illegal marihuana plantation behind the farmhouse walls.
THE emergency services rescued two people trapped inside their car after it fell more than 20 metres down the side of a ravine in Santa Fe de Mondujar. A family member alerted the Guardia Civil there had been an accident, although they were not able to say exactly where on the road. Officers located the vehicle at the bottom of the slope. They immediately called out a medical team and the fire service for assistance.

Hash stash on Dutch yacht TWO crew members of a yacht flying a Dutch flag sailing in Almeria waters are under arrest after customs officers found 5,500 kilos of hashish stashed on board. The authorities launched Operation Landa when a Tax Office Customs Surveillance aerial unit detected a semirigid dinghy loaded with bundles of the kind commonly used to transport the drug heading for the yacht. Customs marine and aerial units boarded the yacht and transferred it to Almeria port, where they got court permission to carry out a search. The authorities reported there were 183 packets of the drug in all, which was of the highest purity.
One of the Guardia officers managed to get down to the car, finding the two occupants, one of them a child, injured but conscious. The officer stayed with them to make sure they remained conscious until the medical services arrived. Ropes and considerable human effort went into getting the accident victims safely stretchered up to the road and into the waiting ambulance, which rushed them to the Torrecardenas hospital.

47 WINNER: Casa Batllo was voted the best modernist building in Spain.
Modern marvel THIS art nouveau building in Barcelona has been named the winner of an architectural magazine’s poll on the best modernist building in Spain. Architectural Digest declared the Casa Batllo the winner after more than 21 per cent of those polled said it was their favourite modernist building. Cantabria’s El Capricho came second, Casa Lis in Castilla y Leon came third and the Palacio de Longoria in Madrid came fourth. Casa Batllo, sometimes called the House of Bones owing to its balcony’s
skeletal appearance, was designed by Antoni Gaudi. It was built around the outside of a pre-existing building in Barcelona’s Eixample district between 1904 and 1906. The house’s owner and its namesake Josep Battlo hired Gaudi to refurbish his family home. It was shortlisted by Barcelona City Council as one of 1906’s best buildings but was not chosen as the winner. The house’s design incorporates many features typical of art nouveau. Its balconies, windows, roof and
chimney all mimic nature with irregular curves in its masonry. Its central facade is said to be based on the surface of a lake with water lilies. It is thought to take cues from impressionist Claude Monet’s Nympheas painting. It is covered with 330 discs of pottery which were designed by Gaudi and fellow architect Josep Maria Jujol while staying in Mallorca when they were restoring Palma Cathedral. Casa Batllo is currently rented out for some of the most important events which take place in Barcelona.

POLICE arrested a 19-year-old Algerian for skippering an inflatable dinghy heading for the Spanish coast with 18 migrants on board. The five-metre long boat was intercepted by Almeria maritime rescue 40 nautical miles east of Cabo de Gata. Police identified the young Algerian as one of the individuals who had organised the crossing to Spain from a beach in Canastel in the North African country, and for being the only person responsible for navigating and steering the craft across the Mediterranean. A police statement said that prior to making the crossing the 19-year-old had had the job of getting together a group willing to do the journey and for getting each person to hand over the equivalent of €500. After they set off he told the migrants that if they were rescued they should say they had taken the navigating and steering in turns.
THE provincial government has allocated a €100,000 packet of investments to the second phase of the project for the mine housing Pulpi’s giant geode, which opened to the public last week. Diputacion de Almeria President Javier A Garcia was among the first visitors to the geological gem, the second biggest geode in the world. Garcia said the council was at the local authority’s side on this “exciting project.” In the same week, Garcia announced in his capacity as national deputy and secretary general of the provincial conservative Popular Party the tabling of a proposal in Congress to urge the national government to collaborate on the geode project. Garcia also said Almeria PP would be registering a proposal to support the declaration of the remains of the Copper Age Los Millares settlement in Santa Fe de Mondujar as a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Club hoping to bounce back AN artistics gymnastics club for youngsters is hoping to spring back into action soon having found itself without a home. Adelante Gimnastics founder Stacey Smith told the Euro Weekly News the club is not able to remain operating at the Huercal-Overa municipal facilities where it had been based since February last year. Stacey has, she said, found what would be a suitable base for the club in HuercalOvera town. The obstacle, in Stacey’s words, is that “it looks like a bomb’s hit it,” and an investment of some €20,000 is needed to turn the premises into a fully ready for use gym. Stacey told EWN she is desparate to have Adelante up and running again as soon as possible for the sake of the children and teenagers of all ages who attend the artistic gymastics and Parkour classes, but for one dedicated group in particular: the elites. “This is the group who have been working for a year and a half, 12 hours a week of intense gymnastics,” Stacey said.
“What they’ve achieved in that time is incredible: you normally get to that level after about two and a half years. I pushed them because we’re supposed to be competing in October in Valencia as the first team from Huercal-Overa in the national ‘Liga Iberica.’ “Now we have nowhere to train, the routines are not together, so it looks as though these girls have trained for absolutely nothing.” Stacey told EWN: “I’m trying to get a loan from my bank to save the club, but that’s a lot of money to put your neck on the line for, and I need help: the bank told me there’s no guarantee they can give me that amount.” She has therefore launched an online fundraising page, and is hoping organisations and companies will “come in to try and save the club.” Stacey also told EWN she is in the process of applying to make Adelante Gimnastics a non-profit making organisation.
REACTION: Various acts of vandalism in the same week prompted the council campaign. VERA Council has launched a zero tolerance campaign against vandalism in the wake of damage to different beach facilities in just a few days. Graffiti on service units, sinks pulled off walls, foot showers and rubbish bins pushed over are among the acts of vandalism which have prompted the local authority to take steps. The administration accuses the vandals not only of damaging municipal infrastructure, but also of ‘giving the municipality a bad image.’ The council has called on the public to do their bit so the ‘irresponsible’ individuals responsible for the destruction can be identified and penalised. “Caring for the beach and the street furniture is for everyone,” the council said, requesting respect for regulations on civic behaviour, also providing the Local Police’s telephone number for reporting vandalism. To put the expense of the recent damage in perspective, the council said the cost of the repairs was equivalent to installing 500 metres of cement beach walkway.
Caught in the act UNIFORMED police made two arrests after spotting an individual selling drugs to someone in the mi ddl e of t he day near Almeria City’s Nicolas Salmeron Park. The pair made off when they realised police were nearby. Of-
ficers intercepted one immediately. He confessed he had been buying cocaine for some friends. Officers also caught up with the drug dealer, who had tried to get away on his moped. They f ound ei ght doses of cocai ne hidden in his clothing.
Festival phone thief collared GUARDIA CIVIL arrested a suspected thief for pinching phones from festivalgoers. Officers approached WSGC in a car in the parking areas of the Dreambeach music event in Villaricos on suspicion he was handling drugs. Not only did they catch him consuming illegal substances, they also discovered 43 stolen mobiles. The Guardia reported some of the phones had been taken at festivals in other provinces.

Dreambeach drugs bust GUARDIA CIVIL arrested two individuals heading for the Dreambeach music festival after finding more than 250 doses of different kinds of drugs prepared for sale hidden in their vehicle. Officers pulled over 25-year-old ARS and 24-year-old DAL during one of the vehicle checks set up on the access roads to the fiveday electronic music event in Villaricos.
A superficial search of the car led to the discovery of a number of illegal substances. A more thorough examination of the vehicle back at the Guardia station brought the total amount seized to eight liquid poppers, 14 grammes of ecstasy, 13 tabs of speed, 73 grammes of hashish, 23 grammes of cannabis resin and 23 grammes of marihuana, as well as €550 in cash.

Shining a light MOJACAR Council is to assign land to the Almeria Port Authority (APA) for the construction of a maritime signal lighthouse. The structure will be located 150 metres above sea level on the northern slope of Moro Manco hill above Marina de la Torre. APA will undertake the project through funds approved by the State Ports, with a planned budget of around €300,000. The APA is also drafting the execution of the project, which in addition to the lighthouse and tower, includes an operation zone with all the necessary equipment and building a good access road. Mojacar mayor Maria Cano and APA president Jesus Caicedo visited the site following a meeting at the town hall to formalise the land transfer. Joining them for the

ADRA mayor Manuel Cortes has called for an expanded municipal health service. Cortes raised the subject during a visit to the town by the Andalucia government’s Health and Families delegate in Almeria, Juan de la Cruz Belmonte, to see the €180,000 extension works on the La Curva health centre. The council head commented that the visit had been an opportunity to explain the municipality’s health service needs to the delegate in person. He thanked the delegate for his “sensitivity and attention” and for “being aware that what we ask for are necessary things for our town and for our residents.” Cortes said he had requested more health professionals, particularly specialists, and more diagnosis equipment,

Family row ends in drug arrest A FAMILY row ended with the arrest of a 27-year-old for growing marihuana and of a 46-year-old for defrauding the power supply. A Guardia Civil patrol rushed to a property in San Juan de los Terreros after a call came through about a massive argument between a young man and his stepfather. The cause of the fight it turned out was the marihuana the stepson was cultivating on the property’s terrace. A search of the home revealed there were a dozen plants and an unauthorised electricity connection.

‘Phantom’ cat caught on camera IMAGES of a mountain cat were caught on camera in the Sierra de los Filabres. The SERBAL Society for the Study and Recovery of Almerian Biodiversity revealed that after nearly three weeks of waiting it recorded footage of the solitary feline on one of the 12 phototrap cameras it had set up at strategic locations in a 2,000-hectare area. SERBAL said it was a female, and the camera had filmed her going in different directions on different days. The organisation is aiming to carry out a census of the cat it dubs the ‘phantom of the Sierra de los Filabres’ on its website. It describes the task as a ‘real challenge’ given the lack of available data on the animal in Almeria, but had based the decision on where to locate the cameras on extensive knowledge of the mountains and intuition as to where cats are most likely to be found. SERBAL warned however there are significantly less dense populations of the species in the province than in northern Spain. The cameras picked up plenty of other kinds of wildlife, mainly foxes and deer, but also martens, genets, badgers, rabbits, rats and mice.

Schools ship-shape for the new term

Turtle ready SPRUCE UP: Children will return to school in September to find a fresh lick of paint on some classroom walls. ADRA Council is making the most of the summer holidays to get municipal schools ship-shape before the start of the autumn term in September. Classrooms are being cleaned up and decorated, and repair and maintenance works are being carried out. Meanwhile, Adra mayor Manuel Cortes applauded the news the Andalucia regional government has awarded the more than €100,000 contract for ‘necessary’ works to reform and update
the Nueva Andalucia school in the La Curva area of the municipality. Cortes said both teachers and parents had been calling for the improvements to be carried out. The works will focus on repairs to the roof of one of the school buildings, the replacement of fencing and the connection of the drainage to the municipal sewage system. The works are expected to take two months to complete.
MOJACAR is all prepared for the possible appearance of loggerhead turtles on the municipality’s beaches following a visit from the Caretta Project. The project is a division of the SERBAL Society for the Study and Recovery of Almerian Biodiversity, which aims to raise awareness about turtles, a threatened species, and ensure nests are safe. Project members held a session on Mojacar ’s Provençal beach, largely aimed at children, but adults were also keen to find out more. The educational, fun workshop included information on conservation and protection, with all partici-
pants receiving a notebook containing advice on what to do in the case of a sighting. There were also roleplay games in which the children acted as mother turtles and new-borns, along with the various predators which threaten the young creatures as they make their way to the sea. SERBAL wants to rapidly identify and protect turtle nest-building along the Almeria coastline this summer. The association has involved everyone connected to the beaches in some way in the initiative, including lifeguards, maintenance and cleaning staff, catering trade businesses and tourism companies. There
is also an important team of local environmental volunteers who keep an eye out for signs of turtle nests and take the necessary safety steps should they appear. According to experts, climatic change is causing turtles which nested in North Africa to come instead to the Spanish coast in search of cooler waters. The species had not nested on Almeria’s beaches for more than 150 years, but through DNA they retain in their genetic memory the locations where their ancestors were born. Turtle nests have been found on beaches in Vera and in Pulpi in recent years, and Mojacar is regarded as a possible nesting site.

Hot July SPAIN has just had its fifth hottest July this century, with a temperature 1.2º Celsius above the average for this month, compared to the years 19812010. Between the 21st and 24th of the month a heatwave was recorded and several temperature records broken, such as the 39º Celsius reached at the Igueldo Observatory, in Donostia-San Sebastian. In Tortosa, the average maximum temperature was 35.1º Celsius, the highest value in almost a century. As far as rainfall is concerned, during July it was more abundant than normal, with storms mainly in the northern half of the country bringing intense rain and some major flooding.
A WEBSITE set up by Cataluña’s regional authority which some claim defames Spain and promotes its separatist agenda cost more than €450,000 of public money to develop. The website, www.catalo niavotes.eu, was set up in 2014 and has been receiving ongoing updates since its launch - all at the tax payer’s expense. It was the brainchild of former Catalan Generalitat President Artur Mas to promote the Catalan region before October 2017’s independence referendum. His successor Carles Puigdemont kept the website live after the referendum to celebrate the voters’ decision to back independence. The main theme of the website is reportedly to mark Spain as a repressive state which prevents Catalans from free expression and speaking their own language. Of the €450,000 spent, €110,000 was allegedly given to the pro-independence newspaper Ara to create favourable news stories and

translate them into English, before publishing them online. Also in the budget was the hiring of a ‘head of inter-
national press,’ who has been paid a total of €212,474 in four years. The website was also used by politician Carles Puigde-
mont as a platform to give his account of police clashes outside the parliament buildings during the voting process.

‘Tried to abduct’ boy A MAN aged 55 accused of trying to abduct a nine-year-old boy from a children’s playground in Vigo has been released by a court on conditional bail. He was arrested after allegedly grabbing the boy by the arm and led him away with the promise of seeing a toy truck. Luckily a parent saw something suspicious was happening and alerted the boy’s father who raced after them. The man released the boy and fled, but Local Police were able to find him nearby. He was identified by the boy’s father. A search of the man’s backpack found a knife with a 22cm blade and a laptop with external hard drive. According to the information given to the officers the detainee had been frequenting the park for a few days, sitting down to watch the children. A Vigo court has opened an investigation, but released the man having imposed a restraining order and prohibited him from communicating with the child.

Two bodies discovered RESIDENTS in properties overlooking the Plaza de La Libertad in San Pedro Alcantara woke to the sight of two bodies collapsed in the square. Emergency services were called and when they arrived they found that one was dead whilst the other was unconscious and appeared to be seriously ill and he was transferred to the Costa del Sol hospital. The idea was born when Arteta saw an interview with two Red Cross members who told the story of attending to a shipwreck on jet skis to help the passengers on board. They spoke of their frustration over only being able to help a small number at a time due to the size and buoyancy of their jet ski. IT has been revealed that Spain last year rejected 76 per cent of asylum claims. A total of 11,800 asylum applications were processed, with just 24 per cent being adjudicated as favourable. But of that 24 per cent, just 575 have actually been granted refugee status as yet. BREXIT BRIEF Economy shrinks THE British economy shrunk by 0.2 per cent between April and June this year, raising concerns that it could slide into recession amidst ongoing Brexit uncertainty. Office of National Statistics (ONS) figures showed economic output (gross domestic product, GDP), contracted for the first time since 2012. The head of GDP at the ONS Rob Kent-Smith said manufacturing output shrinking and a weakening construction sector contributed to the contraction. “Manufacturing output fell back after a strong start to the year. The often-dominated service sector delivered virtually no growth at all,” KentSmith said. The ONS said GDP growth figures had been volatile this year because of changes to the date of Brexit. The departure deadline was repeatedly pushed back due to deadlock and defeats of the Withdrawal Agreement in Westminster. Economists expected growth to flat line in the second quarter but had not predicted growth to fall. Chancellor Sajid Javid told British media he did not expect the economy to slip into a recession. “There’s not a single leading forecaster out there that is expecting a recession. And that’s because they know that the fundamentals remain strong,” Javid said. An economy is classed as being in a recession when there are two consecutive quarters of negative growth.

Police save dog from choking to death THE Guardia Civil who rescued a dog that was choking to death after it had been tied up with a length of string using a slip knot followed it home to find its owner. They had been called to a plot of land in the municipality of Guillena (Sevilla) by concerned neighbours who reported there was an American Staffordshire in a very poor condition. Officers arrived in the nick of time - they found the animal close to death as the string
had tightened around its neck. They cut the cord then, with the help of neighbours, cooled the dog and rehydrated it. It took 20 minutes to revive the animal, say police. Once back on his feet the pet headed for home, and officers simply followed it to find its owner. They discovered two more dogs, which appeared to not be adequately cared for. Guardia Civil are now investigating the unnamed owner for five counts of animal abuse.

Holidays in uncertainty By Joe Gerrard SPAIN’S acting prime minister and other leading politicians have headed off on their summer holidays this week while political deadlock in Madrid remains no closer to being resolved. Pedro Sanchez is understood to have arrived at the prime minister’s summer residence of Marismillas Palace in Andalucia’s Doñana National Park. He is staying with his wife Begoña Lopez and their two daughters. Sanchez’s trip comes just over a month before the Monday September 23 deadline to form a government or hold fresh elections. A deal between the acting prime minister’s left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) and potential partners remains out of reach. Sanchez met with King Felipe at Mallorca’s Marivent Palace last week while the head of state was himself on holiday.

The acting prime minister told the king he would not ‘throw in the towel’ and that he would seek to form a government before resorting to a snap election. He said current mistrust between himself and leftist Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias was ‘mutual.’ The comments followed the collapse in talks between PSOE and the leftist Podemos which led to Sanchez losing two investiture votes after April’s inconclusive election.
Sanchez said he was looking for other ways to return to power but is keeping a deal with Podemos on the table. He also called on the opposition conservative Partido Popular (PP) and the centrist Ciudadanos to abstain and allow PSOE to take power which they have refused to do. One option floated by Sanchez was a Portuguese-style confidence and supply government which would see PSOE
rule alone with the backing of various leftwing parties. Podemos rejected the plan and continued to call for a full coalition, the details of which brought down earlier talks. Podemos’ Pablo Enchenique, who led his party’s negotiating team, said they were still open to a deal and called on PSOE to reach a ‘comprehensive agreement’ with them. Ana Beltran, a senior PP organisational spokesperson, said Sanchez had crossed his arms and done ‘absolutely nothing’ since April’s snap election. Junta de Andalucia Vice President Juan Marin, of Ciudadanos, called on Sanchez to ‘leave Doñana’ and get on with forming a government shortly after his arrival. PSOE ministers including Finance Minister Maria Jesus Montero and Farming Minister Luis Planas both said they were concerned that the deadlock was slowing down economic growth.
Taking power THE formation of regional governments across Spain is complete with the swearing in of Madrid’s new president yesterday (Wednesday). The conservative Partido Popular’s (PP) Isabel Diaz Ayuso was voted in after reaching a deal with the centrist Ciudadanos and the far-right Vox. Her investiture marks the end of some the most protracted talks to form a regional administration since elections on Sunday May 26. Diaz Ayuso said negotiations to form the administration had been ‘difficult.’ The new Madrid Region president also faced difficulties from opposition parties including the left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) and the leftist Mas Madrid and Podemos. They unearthed a story about Diaz Ayuso’s alleged non-payment of real estate taxes on a home jointly owned with her brother, leaving her facing a scandal before even taking office. The president accused the parties of trying to ruin her investiture and ‘damage’ her honour. Diaz Ayuso’s investiture process was one of two of the most drawn-out following May’s elections. Similar wrangling took place in Navarra between leftwing parties who collectively won the most seats there, but none had enough to govern alone.

Traffic drones THE DGT traffic department announced at the start of the month with great fanfare that it was now deploying drones to spot driving offences, but it has now emerged none are covering the mainland. So far the only two equipped for the task of actually fining motorists are in the Canary islands - Tenerife and Gran Canaria to be precise. In addition, they do not have speed radars, so they can only impose fines for dangerous overtaking or illegal manoeuvres, the use of a mobile phone at the wheel or travelling without a seat belt. The provincial head of Traffic of Santa Cruz de Tenerife Pablo Calvo explained that the working radius of the drones in optimal conditions is about two kilometres. The camera incorporated in the drones, which cost up to €8,000, can also detect if people are driving too close together or ignores stop and give way signs.
Canoeist refuses medal A 14-YEAR-OLD canoeist has refused to collect a medal he won in a competition in the town of Zaragoza after he was forced to remove the Spanish flag he had draped over his shoulders. The events took place after a Spanish Canoeing Federation competition during the medal ceremony at the pavilion of the Commercial Circuit of Sevilla. Pablo Ogazón Rodríguez Tabernero, climbed the podium to receive his medal, but was told forcibly to remove his Spanish flag before he could be awarded the medal. Developers launch biggest animal adoption site in Spain THREE young website developers in Mallorca have launched the largest animal adoption platform in Spain, with more than 15,000 to choose from. The developers of pepecos.es discovered the animals by gathering information from independent animal adoption agencies all over Spain. The website is unique in that it offers various advanced functional search tools such as age, sex, breed and location. The service is growing exponentially in popularity and the creators are not done yet. The team of software developers are keen to extend their project into the mobile world so they are creating an app which also allows users to search for lost animals. The app will offer two public spaces, one to report a lost animal and another to inform users the location and time that an animal has been sighted. The website and app are free and the creators said they intend to keep them that way.

JAILED: A Malaga Provincial Court judge sentenced the defendant to 51 years in prison.
Defendant gets 51 years in jail after multiple rapes on the Costa del Sol A 32-YEAR-OLD defendant convicted of raping four women in garages and store rooms in the Teatinos area of Malaga City has been sentenced to 51 years in prison at the Provincial Court of Malaga. The assaults took place between July 2014 and September 2015. The court heard during the trial the 32-year-old raped four women in the garages of community car parks. According to a statement read out in court, the man would use fear and violence to
assault the women. On one occasion he locked one of his victims in the boot of a car for more than an hour. He would threaten them with screwdrivers and wrenches, as well as issuing death threats if they failed to comply. Included in his sentence is a penalty of four years and six months for robbery with force as he committed nearly a dozen robberies in the same car park. Police were able to trace him after he posted selfies on social media which led officers to
track down his location. The man, who has not been named, will serve his prison sentence as well as 10 years on police surveillance and has been ordered to pay damages to the victims. During the trial his lawyer said he had ‘remorse’ for what he had done and that his crimes were the result of going through a ‘bad time’ in his life. The aftermath of his attacks have left many of his victims psychologically scarred and requiring treatment.
Human trafficking THE Guardia Civil in Madrid have arrested seven people aged between 19 and 41 in connection with crimes related to human trafficking. The group of four women and three men allegedly set up an illegal business in La Rioja and Aragon which specialised in bringing care workers for elderly, disabled and terminally ill people into the country from Nicaragua so they could profit by using them as slaves. The care workers received threats from the gang periodically thereby forcing them to comply. The Guardia Civil has confirmed that there were around 50 women who have
been victims of this particular form of slavery connected to the gang since 2016. The group is reported to have earned around €750,000 for bringing people into the country and using them in this way. One of the leaders of the group was caught at the Barajas airport in Madrid as he was allegedly attempting to bring three migrants into the country from Nicaragua. The AYOTE operation captured the rest of the gang - who are believed to be related - later in La Rioja and Huesca where they were running the business. The detainees have been charged with human trafficking, money laundering, labour exploitation and belonging to a criminal gang.

There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics.
HERE in Spain there is a general number for all emergencies, 112. No area code is needed and the number can be called from any phone, including mobiles without a Spanish SIM card. The responders speak a number of languages, and you can also fax or SMS 112. In addition, there are individual emergency numbers, depending on the type of assistance you need. It’s a good idea to keep a printout of them handy, in your bag or wallet, in the home and in the car. And it can’t hurt to have a few helpful Spanish medical/emergency terms written down, just in case you don’t get an English-speaking member of staff. National Police, also known as National Police Corps (Cuerpo Nacional de Policia, CNP), deals with criminal offences and public order in towns and cities, and can be contacted by calling 091 or 902 102 112. The latter was set up for non-Spanish to report burglaries, car theft or a break-in when documents and belongings are lost or stolen. Available in English from 9am to 2pm, all week long, the service is also available in French, German and Italian. Once the telephone report is made,
claimants have 48 hours to check and sign their statement at the police station of their choice. In the case of robbery, where threat or force has been used, victims should call 091 at the time, then go directly to a police station to make a report. The Guardia Civil is a military force which operates mostly in rural areas and is responsible for drug offences, fatal car accidents, robberies and murders, and can be contacted on 062. Local Police (Policia municipal) cover their local town or city area for traffic offences and control, lost property and crimes such as theft and neighbourhood disputes. You can reach them on 092. And a special helpine, 016, has been set up specifically to report instances of gender violence. Jeffrey Epstein death THE death of US financier Jeffrey Epstein while being held in prison on charges of sex trafficking has prompted a special FBI investigation into the circumstances. Epstein died shortly after he was found unconscious in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Centre in New York City early on Saturday, according to media reports. He had seemingly taken his own life. The millionaire was reportedly discovered to have marks on his neck last month, but there are conflicting reports as to whether he was placed on suicide watch at some point. Power cut hits large part of the UK THE UK was hit by major power failures last week, according to news reports. Power suppliers said areas of London, the South East, Midlands and South West were without electricity. There were also reports of problems in the North East. ‘We’re aware of a power cut affecting a large area of London and the South East,’ UK Power Networks posted on Twitter

SPAIN’S central bank plans to increase customer protection at currency exchange bureaus by requiring businesses to state how much they charge in commission and expenses. The Bank of Spain’s proposals, which are currently undergoing consultation until Friday August 23, would make the previously optional sharing of the information a legal requirement. Bureaus will be required to show customers how much they are charged in commission in writing for free under the plans. They will also have to post current rates in a clear and visible place.

FASHION chain Mango made losses of €35 million in 2018 despite sales increasing by 1.8 per cent, company figures show. The regions with the highest proportion of households in rentals were the Canary Islands with 27.8 per cent, the Balearic Islands with 27.7, Cataluña, 24.9 and Madrid, 23.3.

New company creation falls A TOTAL of 7,623 new companies were set up in Spain from January to July this year, a year-on-year fall of 1.7 per cent according to credit firm Iberinform. Iberinform figures showed almost a quarter, 23 per cent, of new companies registered were in Madrid. One in five were set up in Cataluña while 16 per cent were registered in Andalucia. Service businesses made up more than half of the total. Construction’s share of new firms was one quarter while industrial companies made up 6 per cent of the total. Iberinform figures also showed 57,705 plans to create new firms were registered from January to July this year, 1.7 per cent less than during the first seven months of 2018. A total of 21,630 companies were wound up in the first seven months of 2019, 1 per cent higher than January to July last year. Almost a quarter of all companies that dissolved did so in Madrid. One fifth did so in Cataluña, while 11 per cent did in both Andalucia and Valencia.
Stakeholders call for coalition deal TRADE UNIONS and business organisations have both called on Spain’s largest political party to reach a deal that would enable it to govern following April’s inconclusive general election. The general secretaries of the CCOO and UGT, two of Spain’s largest trade unions, both called on the left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) to unite with the leftist Podemos. Heads of the Confederation of Business Organisations (CEOE) and the Confederation of Small and Medium Enterprises (CEPYME) said acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez should form a ‘moderate and stable’ government. Unai Sordo and Pepe Alvarez, of the CCOO and UGT unions respectively, said it was more important at this stage for PSOE and Podemos to agree on a joint programme. Union leaders called for tax reforms and raising the minimum wage to be a part of the pact. CEOE President Antonio Garamendi said stability and moderation should be the foundation of any deal PSOE strikes with other parties. CEPYME’s head Gerado Cuerva called for the ‘world of business’ to be at the centre of a future government.

Contract crackdown SPAIN’S acting labour minister has vowed to end the practice of some workers being hired improperly on self-employed contracts if her party is returned to government. Magdalena Valerio unveiled plans for the crackdown following meetings with acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, trade union leaders and the heads of business associations. The government needed to address multiple court rulings which stated workers employed under such arrangements are full time staff and should be contracted as such, the minister added. Valerio added she planned to repeal the ‘most harmful’ elements of labour reforms introduced by the previous
conservative Partido Popular (PP) government. Those reforms were followed by a rise in workers being hired under temporary or zero-hour contracts, dubbed ‘junk contracts’ by critics. The crackdown would target companies in the so-called ‘gig economy,’ such as delivery firms Deliveroo and Glovo. Both firms employ delivery riders under freelance contracts, meaning workers have to pay their own social security contributions despite not being able to set their work schedules. The companies also require workers to make a set amount of deliveries to receive more work. Valerio’s pledge to crack down on
such practices follows court rulings such as in Madrid’s 19th Social Court which ruled Deliveroo workers should be classed as full time staff. The court ordered the firm to pay out almost €1.2 million to 500 delivery riders in social security payments they were made to contribute. Deliveroo has since said it will appeal against the ruling in Spain’s Supreme Court. That ruling is expected to set the precedent on whether the company and others can employ their riders as freelancers. Workers at Glovo in Barcelona protested earlier this year against their conditions and burnt their delivery bags.

Dia owner probe A NATIONAL COURT judge has summoned the owner of Spanish supermarket Dia to testify on allegations he ‘economically strangled’ and bankrupted another company to buy it at below market prices. Judge Manuel Garcia Castellon claimed Mikhail Fridman, owner of the LetterOne private equity firm which bought the struggling Dia earlier this year, used underhand tactics to buy Zed Worldwide. His attempted takeover began in 2009. Zed Worldwide asked to be declared insolvent on June 30, 2016 and Fridman submitted a bid to buy it for €20 million four months later, well below its market value. A police anti-corruption probe alleged Fridman had ‘direct power’ over actions which they said caused property damage to Zed Worldwide shareholders. The allegations came after Fridman wrote to the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office in November 2017 in an effort to absolve himself of responsibility over the company’s insolvency. The new police report which levelled

This left the company with a ‘total lack’ of liquidity, the report claimed.

Bring back National Service LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT AS most of my scribble followers are aware, I don’t generally enter into personal rapport with correspondents. As much as I truly do appreciate the wonderful and varied feedback that I receive, getting involved with individual readers has, I have learned through past experience, usually been more time consuming than productive. However I do read all the mail that arrives to me personally and I’m always interested in letters received by the EWN, especially those pertaining to the column that is published on our excellent ‘Your Opinion’ letters page. This was certainly the case last week. Midst a positive deluge of mail supporting my ‘What If’ manifesto, the one that managed to find the ‘Letter of the week’ spot was, of course, a strictly minority, derogatory opinion. The gentleman disagreed with a number of my suggestions, and I did indeed take umbrage at his efforts to depict me as something of a cross between Donald Trump and Adolf Hitler. Firstly, my suggestion that we bring back National Service was not to teach our youngsters

to kill people, they’re already learning that perfectly well in Civvy Street! It was to instill them with discipline and respect for their fellow human beings; rescue them from the gang infested streets, and give them the opportunity to learn a trade and engage in wider life experiences. The immigrant camps I suggested were not a resurgence of the likes of Auschwitz or Belsen, but places with full medical facilities, factories,
acceptable living conditions and places of learning. Somewhere to place illegals and those without papers; enabling them to live and work without disruption of local society, until they either earned the opportunity of becoming British citizens, or be returned back from whence they came. The ‘boot camps’ would be to bring young and rampant criminals into line. Strict disciplinary institutions that would
strike fear into young thugs and encourage them to attempt anything (even work!) to stay out of these establishments forever. So, to this gentleman who wrote in, I most respectfully ask you to read my blurb more carefully and not try to instill it with your own, utterly incorrect interpretations. Thanks a lot. I see yet another ‘suicide’ has prevented a high profile trial that could have incriminated members of the ‘hierarchy.’ Jeffery Epstein joins the ranks of those whose deaths are terribly opportune for yet more slimy highly placed toe rags, who, believe me, will stop at nothing to preserve their privileged existence. The tragic, still mysterious death of scientist David Kelly was another. Stephen Ward also ‘took his own life’ the night before he was prepared to blow the whistle on some of the highest in the land, which more than probably included royalty. Heaven knows how many others have been quietly ‘neutralised’ to cover the tracks of the elite. And while we are about it, have the authorities ceased to investigate the sordid goings on at Elm House? THIS week I was planning to write about the benefits to portfolio risk of international equity investing backed up by numerous research papers. No, don’t go away. You’d have loved it. Trust me. I’m a journo… Never mind! But then I came across a couple of newspaper articles. Firstly, about the actor Kevin Spacey (assault allegations recently dropped against him in America) ‘punching back’ at his accusers with a defiant poetry recital alongside the statue of a battered Greek boxer in Rome’s main archaeological museum. Next, that the police chief at the centre of the botched VIP sex abuse inquiry costing £2.5m into false allegations of paedophilia and child murder by the fantasist ‘Nick’ has amassed a £2m pension pot. And that when allegations about the Westminster paedophile ring first surfaced, Tom Watson, now Labour’s deputy leader, leapt upon them purely for personal political advancement. Sadly, one fact in this sorry mess that is ‘credible and true.’ Something’s wrong with this world, isn’t it? We have an Oscar-winning actor who has his career cut short by, as yet, unproven allegations. We have an MP who caused complete misery in the lives of well-respected people walking as

As a writer of psychological crime thrillers (now in audiobook format; plus all profits to Costa del Sol Cudeca cancer charity) I admit I’m attracted by crime and all it entails. From grisly descriptions of crime scenes to the spinechilling details of post-mortems - as in my latest novel ‘Betrayal.’ And given the chance to talk to criminals, I’d welcome the first-hand information they’d provide. But that’s as far as it’d go. Not so with
some police officers, apparently. The charge sheet gets ever longer, doesn’t it? LEGALLY SPEAKING Are his charges too high? Four years ago I bought a property in a new complex. At the time of purchase I was told that the community charge would be €155. On completion I was informed that the charge would be €255, because my apartment has a garden. Most others have terraces. Now the community charge has been reduced to €236 per month. All properties were reduced as the new President promised. Many other residents also complain about the high charges. They tell me that my charge is higher because my garden is watered by the community system and not through my apartment. The administrator tells me that any application to reduce must be done through the courts. Can I get these charges lowered? H M (Costa del Sol) It is quite normal that a larger unit YOU AND THE with a garden pays LAW IN SPAIN more than a smaller unit with a terrace. Be aware that your garden is in fact community property with exclusive use assigned to you. The community fees are not set by the president or the administrator. They are voted by the members at the Annual General Meeting. This would be the right time to raise the issue.

Look on the bright side A POLL by Key Data for the pro-Podemos online publication, Publico, predicted that the PSOE and Unidas-Podemos would take 174 seats, two short of an overall majority, in a new election. This is unlikely as Pablo Iglesias’ popularity has plummeted since the failed Investiture and these results apply to an election tomorrow, not next November. Voters would be so weary of politics, politicians and promises by then that most would stay at home, especially if the weather were bad. But as always, the hard-core Right would turn out in force producing another hung parliament or, if Spain is to be truly unlucky, a PP-Cs-Vox coalition. Popularity has plummeted.
Double standards THERE is a socialist government in Navarra because EHBildu abstained during the investiture vote, allowing the P S O E ’s M a r i a C h i v i t e t o b e come regional president. This allowed the Partido Popular, Ciudadanos and Vox to insist again that the PSOE consorts with terrorists. EH-Bildu was the political arm of the defunct terrorist organisation, ETA, but is the situation in Navarra worse than in Madrid, Murcia or Andalucia where Vox’s votes enabled PP-Cs governments? Top tribute HOLA Leapy, thank you so much for dedicating this week’s column to the great Joe Longhorne. I had no idea he had sadly passed away. If it had been one of the faceless wonders from Big Brother and similar rubbish I am sure it would have been all over the media!!! Disgraceful. I worked with Joe in Jersey in the 1970s. He was top of the bill and I was a female vocalist in the show, he was awesome. One week someone stole my handbag with my wages in and Joe paid me out of his own pocket, I will never forget him doing such a kind thing but that was the measure of the man, God bless him. I now live in t h e c o a s t a l r e s o r t o f M o j a c a r, Almeria and you will be pleased to know live music is alive and kicking here. WHILST the fireworks in Altea were absolutely fantastic, (I myself attended, to see the superb display with my husband). The after effects this morning were not so. We went to our usual beach Porto Senso, to be confronted with the remnants of the night before fireworks. In a world where we are constantly being told about all the plastic in the sea and the effects this is having on our environment, it was apparent this morning that it is not being taking that seriously. Just a few months ago in March I had the privilege of seeing a demonstration in L’Alfaz del Pi, where all schoolchildren took to the roads to show what plastic is doing to our environment.

THE Spanish government’s publishing of the names of its citizens who died in a Nazi concentration camp is a positive step towards the country confronting its fascist past. The government revealed the names of almost 4,430 people who died in the Mauthausen-Gusen camp last week. Those who were sent to the camp were among around 10,000 others deported to concentration and death camps by former dictator Francisco Franco’s regime. Franco was closely aligned with Nazi Germany’s leader Adolf Hitler during the Second World War. The publishing of the victim’s names is the latest in a long series of steps taken by Spain to face up to the crimes of the Franco regime. The worst of these were the mass killings of opponents. Several of them were deported to Nazi camps and stripped of Spanish citizenship while thousands more died and were buried in mass graves which are still being unearthed. Spain adopted democracy in the late 1970s and efforts to root out the relics of fascism have continued ever since and have faced considerable opposition. There is still a Francisco Franco Foundation in Spain while an equivalent organisation for Hitler in Germany would be unthinkable. Plans to exhume Franco’s remains from the Valley of the Fallen mausoleum have also faced pushback including from the conservative Partido Popular (PP), a mainstream political party. But the latest move on the concentration camp shows exposing the crimes of fascism is necessary, just and long overdue.

JORIS PLU SOME days ago, I had a fantastic meal with a very good friend of mine. We were talking for hours. There was a lot to say, to discover. At a certain moment we were talking about when and if people who were really in trouble would ask for help. If it would bring people closer to each other. Something that looks so simple and easy but which is for many of us so hard to do. We are not brought up like this. Or, we have to solve our own problems. And so many more answers. And to a certain extent this is true. We need to sort out our own life and work. But on the other hand there are circumstances where someone really needs help. This can be when one is moving from one house to another and in desperate need of helping hands. Or it could be about mental guidance, financial help, etcetera. We all need to find out our ourselves where the limit is, when to ask

RUNNING: Get fit and have fun.
RUNNING is free, you can do it anywhere, it burns more calories than any other mainstream exercise and it can reduce your risk of long-term illnesses, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and stroke. It can also boost your mood and keep your weight under control. Okay, you have bought those new trainers and are keen to get out for a nice jog, but here are some top tips for beginners. It really helps to have someone about the same level of ability as you to run with. You’ll encourage each other when you’re not so keen to run. You’ll feel that you do not want to let your running partner down, and this will help motivate you. Firstly, to avoid getting a stitch do not eat anything solid about two hours before your run and only drink in small quantities. Many muscle-related injuries are caused by people failing to warm up before exercise. Start each run with a gentle warm-up of at least five min-
utes. This can include quick walking, marching on the spot, knee lifts, side stepping and climbing stairs. Start running at a moderate pace, where you can easily hold a conversation) and then try to relax whilst you run. Try to take short, easy steps, which are more effective than long, powerful strides that act as a brake, slowing your forward momentum with every footfall. Keep your arms in tight, for a really economical use of your energy. Initially, you should alternate between two minutes of jogging and two minutes of walking. Increase your running intervals by one minute per workout until you can run the entire distance in one, without having to walk. Schedule your training so you run one day and rest the next. This simple training plan can help you achieve the greatest training effect and avoid overuse injuries. When you finish your run, give yourself a few
minutes to cool down after each run by walking and doing a few stretches. Keep your running interesting by adding variety. Running the same route over
and over again can become boring. Vary your distances, pace and routes. Have fun.

HERE at Olive Tree Farm there are times of the year when both eggs and tomatoes are in abundance. Flamenco Eggs is one of our favourite dish e s wh i c h m a k e s u s e o f b o th . There are a few variations of this dish in different areas of Spain, this is my version finished in a traditional Spanish cazuela! Ingredients - For two people 6 large tomatoes roughly chopped (or a can of chopped tomatoes) 1 red pepper chopped 1 white onion chopped 2-3 tablespoons olive oil 3 sl i c e s Se r r a n o h a m cu t in to strips 2 small chorizo sausages cut into small slices 2 garlic cloves chopped 2 teaspoons of sweet paprika 1-2 eggs per person Chopped parsley Salt and freshly ground black pepper
OLIVE TREE FARM was set up about four years ago with the intention of achieving a level of self sufficiency. We have poultry for meat and eggs, goats for milk, rabbits and small pigs for meat and harvest our 70 olive trees each year for oil. We also grow a variety of fruits and vegetables.
Method Preheat the oven to 200ºC In a small frying pan on the hob, add the olive oil, a sprinkle of salt and black pepper and fry the onion
and garlic gently until the onion is opaque. Add the chorizo and ham to the pan and fry gently for a couple of minute s to a llow the fla vours to come out of the meats. Add the tomatoes and chopped red pepper, sprinkle over the paprika and s tir through… s imme r until the tomatoes and pepper are soft and the juices have reduced slightly, check seasoning and add salt and black pepper to taste if required. Tip all the ingredients into a small ove n proof dis h, le ve l it out a nd make small wells in the mixture, one for e a c h e gg, w ith the ba c k of a spoon. Crack the eggs into each indentation and then bake in the oven for about 10 - 12 minutes until the whites are cooked, but the yolk is still a little runny. Sprinkle with the chopped parsley and serve immediately. Make sure you have plenty of crusty bread to mop up all those juices.
ALMERIA is Spanish indie pop central this weekend as the city stages the second Cooltural Fest Music for All festival. More than 50 bands and artists are performing on three stages. Among the headline acts appearing on the main stage are Vetusta Morla, Dorian, Miss Caffeina, Viva Suecia, Second and Zahara. Access to see artists including Arizona Baby, Lichis and Alice Wonder on the Playa Acustico stage, and Perro, Jenny & The Mexicats, Tu Otra Bonita and Yo Diablo on the Almeria Ciudad stage is free. The festival also features DJ sets and after parties, and on Friday night there is the Gastromusical route initiative, with concerts by Kill Aniston, We’ve Got Enemies, Los Manises and Playa Cuberris.

LIVE ACTS: Orquesta Pentagrama will have everyone up and dancing on Sunday night. ARBOLEAS is in party mood as the town celebrates its annual San Roque fiestas. The entertainment gets going tonight, Thursday, August 15, with a concert by Trifasico at 9pm. There’s a sporty start to Friday with a cycle route around the town beginning at 11am. At 7pm there is a mass in honour of San Roque, and at 8.30pm
there will be a performance by the Municipal Folklore School and Kamushka. From 11pm onwards everyone will have a chance to get up and dance to music from Orchestra El Norte and Orchestra Cristal. On Saturday night it will be the turn of the Arboleas Dance School to take to the stage, followed by more live tunes from
Orchestra El Norte and Orchestra Cristal at from 11pm. On Sunday, the final day of the celebrations, there will be an opportunity to try traditional food from 2pm, and in the evening the music will be provided by Orquesta Pentagrama. The celebrations will draw to a colourful close with a grand firework display at 2am.

TWO new officers have joined Albox Local Police force after successfully completing training. The two took up their posts in an official act held in Mayor Francisco Torrecillas’ office. As well as the council head, Deputy Mayor Jose Campoy and town hall secretary Maria Eva Cano were also present, and Albox Local Police chief Casimiro Martinez was the official witness. The new officers are working out of the police station located in the La Loma area of the town, which was inaugurated in April last year.

Covering the area from Partaloa to El Cucador, Little Owls is an Arboleasbased voluntary practical support group. The volunteers provide services including sitting with people while their carers go shopping, taking people to medical appointments, providing mobility equipment or just dropping in for a chat.
Supreme Court ratifies assault sentence THE Supreme Court upheld a seven-year sentence set by the Almeria Provincial Court for an attempted sexual assault on a woman in Alfoquia in September 2016, Spanish press reported. The Supreme Court rejected the appeal against the sentence. As well as time behind bars, the sentence includes a restraining order prohibiting the individual from going within 300 metres of the victim for 10 years, eight years’ probation and a €5,190 fine for inflicting minor injuries and compensation, Spanish press said.

‘Realistic’ budget THE mayor of Tijola described the recently approved municipal budget for 2019 as “realistic.” It is “investor, but with balanced expenditure,” Jose Juan Martinez said. The budget anticipates income of €6,090,000 and expenses of €5,830,000, translating into a €260,000 surplus. The Ciudadanos party council head highlighted an increase in the social affairs section and in contracting personnel for areas like municipal cleaning services.
In reference to investments, Martinez referred to plans to allocate some €205,000 for the construction of a swimming pool and a funeral parlour in the Higueral area of the municipality. He also drew attention to the €60,000 earmarked for projects and works over the next year, including the cultural and exhibition centre in the Plaza de Abastos, underground parking and the extension of the town hall in Plaza de España.

This week I was robbed! MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man THIS week’s article has been written by a guest; a mini grumpy in the making, a ‘grumpette’ if you will. Please welcome my daughter, Dr S : This week I was robbed. No not in the way you might think. But by Starbucks. They even asked me my name before they robbed me. Most untraditional (I work with offenders, I should know). So, Monday I bounced into Starbucks at Waterloo station in London, and asked for a Soya Latte. Did I want it to be tall, grande or venti the ‘barista’ (a whole other article) asked; this is a language reserved for Starbucks just to make the process more convoluted and challenging. Let’s be clear, I need coffee. This means engaging my brain (pre-caffeine) is a challenge, so it seems unfair to introduce new words other than small, medium or large at this point, but alas, they do. Then, the ‘barista’ tells me the price of this ‘grande’ (medium to the rest of the world), latte - with its not so special milk -
is £3.90. Hang on, let me just repeat this. THREE POUNDS, NINETY. Almost £4! Now, I drink coffee a lot. And don’t get me wrong, I am partial to a fancy pants, whirly twirly, coloured, unprounceable, instagrammable coffee like the best of us, BUT, this is not what a ‘grande’ soya latte is. It’s BASIC. So why are you charging me the same price as a taxi from where I live to my nearest train station? I’ll tell you why; because they can! Because I smiled as he said ‘that will be £3.90 please’ and paid it. Because I didn’t say a word, and instead just messaged Big Grumpy and moaned. To be clear, Starbucks isn’t the only coffee shop robbing people, but I am quite sure every time I go into this establishment the price is creeping up for no valid reason. AND, it seems I am penalised for my lactose intolerance allergy (an early gift from my Dad) by having to pay extra for soya milk. I’ll just also have a quick moan about people who don’t indicate while I am here. Yes I am a psychologist, but contrary to popular belief, I am not a mind-reader! You are a hazard on the road! Please note, both these moans are particularly relevant following my recent trip to visit Big Grumpy in Spain, since coffee is one euro at our local venta (Starbucks take note) and no-one ever indicates!

If you want some privacy, thinner, pale-coloured curtains will give you that while still allowing sunlight to filter through and brighten up a room. The same illusion can be created by sticking to light, solid colours on walls. Mirrors are another way of tricking the eye into making rooms seem a bit bigger than they actually are.

I have first-hand experience of that sort of brutal policing. Back in the 1970s, after I had a bottle smashed over my head by one of a gang of homophobic thugs, a police officer in Tottenham, north London, said: ‘Well that’s the sort of thing that happens around here to

Patel’s words highlighted all that is wrong with British politicians, most of whom are too stubborn, too out-oftouch with public opinion or too stupid to realise that the only way to deal with the drug ‘problem’ is to decriminalise ALL illegal substances and subject them to regulation and taxation. At a stroke, drug gangs will be largely eliminated and tax revenues could be used to drag the NHS out of the hole it’s presently in. And there will be enough cash left over to tackle the desperate social problems that are destroying the fabric of British society. Other countries have shown that this is the only sensible way forward, but when last did you see political leaders in the UK, or America for that matter, exhibit anything other than gross ignorance and breathtaking incompetence?

ROAD TEST by Nick Fletcher LARGE MPV models have great appeal for families who need space for children and lots of luggage, so day-to-day practicality and versatility are key factors - and so is price. Some of the larger MPVs can cost well over €30,000 but for buyers on a budget, the Opel Combo Life is a smart alternative. Made by Opel and Vauxhall - both now part of the giant French PSA Group the Combo Life can seat seven on three rows of seats and still have substantial load space in the boot, with prices starting at €22,485 (£20,135). It has to be said that the Combo Life isn’t the most stylish in the class - it was designed as a van rather than specifically as an MPV - but it more than atones with its value for money and its surprisingly pleasant driving dynamics. There are petrol and diesel engines, manual and auto gearboxes and the option of five or seven seats. My test version was a seven-seat model with a perky and economi-

MotoGP thriller in Austria By Dilip Kuner MARC MARQUEZ may have been setting records recently, but Ducati have sent a reminder that they too are proud of their past. Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) took a thrilling last corner win in Austria to keep up their 100 per cent success rate at the Red Bull Ring. He passed Marquez (Repsol Honda team) to sweep to victory in a race that could not have been closer as the two MotoGP greats treated the crowds to a sensational race at the myWorld Motorrad Grand Prix von Österreich. New kid on the block Fabio Quartararo (Petronas Yamaha SRT) took third in a breathless race that saw Britain’s Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda Castrol) crash out of contention early on. He hit the back of Tito Rabat’s Reale Avinita Racing Ducati on turn
three of lap two after the Spaniard had to take avoiding action to avoid Pol Espargaro’s (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) bike. Marquez on pole and Dovizioso made superb starts and reached turn one in first and second. There was nothing to choose between the two, neither willing to give an inch. But they were perhaps too intent on their own race at this stage and mistakes into turn three allowed Quartararo to take the lead, with Jack Miller (Pramac Racing) and Team Suzuki Ecstar’s Alex Rins getting by Marquez and Dovizioso on the exit. Dovi then got by Marquez into turn four on the opening lap as the polesitter was demoted to P5. Meanwhile, Quartararo was getting the hammer down as the rookie took a 0.5 lead into lap two. However, Dovizioso and Marquez have too much talent to stay down the
field, and they both started to recover from their opening lap. Dovi was shortly back up to second, with Miller in third holding off Marquez. Just behind was the fast-starting Valentino Rossi (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP), having climbed to fifth from P10. Marquez soon got past Miller, then Dovi and Marquez blasted past Quartararo on lap seven. They gradually pulled out a lead, but there was nothing between the two. Marquez got past Dovi with three laps to go, but could not pull clear. It was nip and tuck until the final corner when Dovi reclaimed first place and took the chequered flag. Dovi said: “This victory was really important for me. At the end of the race I had good grip on the tyre and this allowed me to attempt that incredible overtaking at the final corner.”

Mas for Movistar MALLORCAN cyclist Enric Mas has signed with the Movistar Team for three seasons. Mas, 24, who competed in this year’s Tour de France for the first time, comes from the Belgian team Deceuninck-Quick Step. The Spaniard excelled in the French competition, where he held the white jersey as leader of the Youth classification for a while,
finally finishing third in the category. A native of Artá, Mas finished second in the Vuelta a España in 2018, which is the greatest achievement of his career to date, where he also won one of the stages. Mas trained in the ranks of the Contador Foundation until 2015 when he moved to the Deceuninck-Quick Step.
