Old style Almeria post IMAGES of Almeria are going far and wide this month by good old-fashioned post. The province is the featured region for August in the post service’s ’12 months, 12 stamps’ series. Unveiling the commemorative stamp, provincial council Vice-President Angel Escobar and Post Office Stamp Collecting director Modesto Fraguas, revealed the design is made up of some of Almeria’s most distinctive symbols. An indalo, a Garrucha red prawn, a Raf tomato, a cowboy, the Alcazaba fortification and the Cabo da Gata natural park coastline are all included.

Escobar thanked the post service for dedicating the stamp series to Almeria in such an important month for
the tourism sector and for the design, which he said captures “our strengths of agriculture, our main economic
motor, the seagoing tradition, culture, cinema and our beaches, which every year attract thousands of visitors.”
Saudi millionaire new Almeria boss SAUDI ARABIAN millionaire Turki AlSheikh is the new boss of UD Almeria football club. The former Saudi Minister for Sport has officially taken over from businessman Alfonso Garcia Gabarron as the red and white’s largest shareholder after signing a €20 million deal in a notary in Almeria City at midday on Friday, a further €7 million going to pay off the club’s debt, according to Spanish media reports. "I always said if someone came along with a grand, ambitious project, and with
more financial power than me, I would let it happen,” Garcia Gabarron said in reference to the deal. “I hope you all back him as he is an important person who loves football,” he added. The 38-year-old advisor to the Saudi Royal Court is aiming to take the Second Division side back to the Premier League, Spanish press reported. He has considerable experience in the football world, and already owns Cairo side Pyramids FC. Turki Al-Sheikh is the club’s third
owner since it was founded in 1989. Garcia Gabarron was UD Almeria president for 16 years, having acquired a majority stake in the club in July 2003. The change of club boss was followed a day later by the replacement of the manager. Pedro Emanuel dos Santos Martins Silva takes over from Oscar Fernandez. A former professional player, who was on Jose Mourinho’s Champions Leaguewinning Oporto side, the 44-year-old Portuguese has been a club manager in Saudi Arabia, Portugal and Cyprus.

Fatal crash ONE person died and two were injured when a car came off the road in the early hours of Tuesday morning on the AL-7107 road connecting Villaricos and Pozo del Esparto, Spanish press reported.
Suitcase stowaway A STOWAWAY failed to get past Almeria port authorities by hiding in a suitcase stashed in a car boot. Guardia Civil officers found the woman squashed into the case in a vehicle coming off a ferry from Nador in Morocco after a check on the boot contents showed one bag was suspiciously heavy. She was, the Guardia reported, evidently dazed, exhausted and dehydrated, prompting an immediate call for an ambulance. The car driver was identified and arrested for a crime against the rights of foreign citizens. So far this year Guardia Civil at Almeria port have intercepted 98 stowaways hidden in vehicles or luggage, or who have jumped into the sea from ships from North Africa while they are docking in a bid to try and reach Spanish territory. Five of them were minors.

POLICE in Almeria detained six fugitives from Spanish justice in just 48 hours. The first two detentions were Moroccan citizens who were attempting to leave Spain from Almeria port. One was handed over to the Violence Against Women Court in Cartagena in Murcia, and the other to a court in Mataro in Barcelona. A 32-year-old woman wanted in connection with a robbery in Jaen was arrest number three.
Six fugitives in 48 hours The fourth was an individual suspected of taking part in an assault. He was arrested on the order of an Almeria court after police found him con-
suming alcohol and drugs on one of the provincial capital’s main streets. On the same night, the police force’s daily check on guests registered at the city’s hotels and hostels led to the detention of a man who had violated a prohibition on entering the Schengen Area. The final arrest was not far from the provincial police station, in this case an individual with a prison sentence issued by an Almeria court which they have yet to serve.

Knocked out and robbed GUARDIA CIVIL arrested a 24year-old woman from El Ejido for knocking out and robbing a woman on the doorstep of her Almerimar home. The victim claimed she was whacked and lost consciousness after opening the front door without first checking who was knocking. The attacker then got inside and stole her mobile phone and a bag containing €500, the victim said. She needed stiches for the injury sustained during the attack, the Guardia reported.
Almanzora highway Junta priority THE Almanzora highway is a priority for the regional government, according to Junta de Andalucia Almeria delegate Maribel Sanchez. Speaking at a presentation to highlight the administration’s achievements in its first six months in office, the delegate pointed to the recent allocation of the €25.3 million contract for the construction of the El Cucador-La Concepcion stretch of the dual-carriageway and said the works would begin in September.

Best village THIS picture of a village in Castilla y Leon comes as it was recently crowned the best in Spain following a public vote. Riaño, in Leon Province, was n a m e d 2 0 1 9 ’s B e s t Vi l l a g e i n Spain after winning almost 20,210 votes in Cadena Ser’s contest. It beat the town of Frigiliana, in Andalucia’s Malaga Province, by more than 5,700 votes. Riaño and Frigiliana came first and second in the poll which saw 50 villages vie to be named
Spain’s best. Riaño lies close to Castilla y Leon’s border with Asturias in the north of Spain. It sits 1,148 metres above sea level and covers an area of almost 98 square kilometres. The village which stands today is known as Nuevo Riaño (New Riaño). It was built after the original village, which dated from the 18th century, was demolished to make way for a reservoir in 1987. The modern-day village is home to 474 people, according to the lat-
est census data from 2018. Riaño and the surrounding area are known for their natural beauty. It lies in the so-called Spanish Switzerland which is popular with skiers and for other winter sports. The village has been part of the Mountains of Riaño Regional Park since 2016. It lies opposite the Picos de Europa range. Riaño is also known for the Church of San Martin de Pedrosa del Rey which was built in the 13th century.

GOVERNMENT sub-delegate in Almeria, Manuel de la Fuente met with Almeria’s Security councillor Maria de Mar Garcia Lorca to discuss measures to improve public safety in the El Puche area of the city after a rubbish collection worker was hit by a pellet in the neck.
THIRTEEN members of the same family are under arrest following a police operation into a criminal drug trafficking organisation. Searches of eight properties in Vicar, El Parador, Roquetas de Mar and La Mojonera uncovered a cocaine production laboratory. Police seized 1.6 kilos of the drug in its pure form and 3.5 kilos of cocaine cut with other substances, along with marihuana and hash, a firearm and €6,755 in cash. Officers also discovered four indoor marihuana plantations with nearly 750 cannabis plants. The clan used some of the money from marihuana deals to acquire consignments of pure cocaine to cut with other substances and sell, police said. According to the police the gang functioned with a well-organised pyramid-shaped hierarchy, strong security measures and a clear allocation of responsibilities. The detainees include the clan head and his two sons, who acted as his lieutenants.
THE provincial government and the Spanish Golf Federation have come together to promote the Costa de Almeria as a golfing destination. The province’s tourism brand will be the official sponsor of the men’s Senior Professional Spanish National Championship, considered the most important event staged in the country, and which this year will be played in Almeria. Some 100 sportsmen are expected to take part in the autumn championship, which, the Diputacion pointed out, would bring media, sponsors and spectators to the region. The provincial administration said the event would make Almeria the ‘epicentre of golf at national level,’ raising the province’s profile as a year-round golfers’ destination, whether training or playing. “Celebrating an event of these characteristics in our province will put us on the national level competition map and on the agenda of golf enthusiasts and professionals around the world,” commented Tourism Deputy Fernando Gimenez.
Fire doused A WILDFIRE close to the road connecting Cabrera and Turre was under control within hours, the Andalucia Plan INFOCA service reported. A total of 25 firefighters tackled the blaze, supported by two helicopters and an aircraft. The fire affected 1.2 hectares of undergrowth.

ALMERIA’S population increased by 36.9 per cent between 2000 and 2018, according to a report by the BBVA Foundation and the Valencian Institute of Economic Investigations. This was the second highest growth in resident numbers seen in Spanish provinces over the 18-year period.

Epic bike ride for excellent cause AN epic bike ride from Palomares to Portsmouth has raised more than €1,000 for an excellent cause. Friends Martin Morris, Glenn Roulland and Rob Hillard chose the Alzheimer’s Society to benefit from the money they collected from taking on the challenge of the 2,100kilometre self-supported cycle. All three have family members who have been affected by the condition. One of the trio’s biggest fundraising supporters was regular haunt, the Oasis bar in Palomares, which last Friday hosted a presentation of the €300 they raised: bar owner Emma Rundle donated monies from the Sunday quiz and Tuesday darts, and individual customers generously did their bit too. Martin told the Euro Weekly News the three mates had already tested their cycling stamina, last year biking unsupported from Santander to Palomares, where both he and Glenn own property. Back in May, Team ‘3 Amigos, The fellowship of the chainring,’ as they dubbed themselves, went the extra mile so to speak, pedalling the other way and finishing in the Hampshire port city which is home to Rob and Glenn. “This was by far the biggest ride we had ever undertaken,” Martin explained. “We were fully self-supported with our panniers carrying our luggage. We were relying on our steel bikes and strong legs to get us by!” They made Cartagena their first stop after two big climbs out of Aguilas and Puerto Mazzarron, then followed the coast, calling in at Alicante, Va-

Then it was across the bottom of the Pyrenees and on to Carcassonne, Toulouse, La Rochelle and St Malo, where the team caught the ferry to Portsmouth and cycled the final nine mile-stretch. The trio successfully completed the distance in the 21-day allotted time period, climbing as high as 32,400 feet. Martin told EWN, “Our last day, our only day of rain, there was a feeling of great personal achievement as I had always said one day I would cycle back to the UK rather than fly or drive.”
ROQUETAS DE MAR Council is using drones to help wage war on mosquitos. Drones equipped with thermal cameras identify mozzie hotspots, which are then fumigated. Roquetas mayor Gabriel Amat dropped by Torrequebrada in Aguadulce last week to meet with the technicians responsible for the municipality’s mosquito prevention, control and treatment campaign this year and to see for himself the equipment they have at their disposal. Thanking the council employees and the technicians from the company reinforcing current anti-mozzie efforts, the mayor commented that while the insects have not been a significant problem in Roquetas this summer “we have to take into account that we cannot lower our guard and we all have to continue collaborating, looking at the way to get to places and gardens where there are focal points.” A 10-strong team tackles Roquetas’ mosquito prevention in urban and natural areas, including Punta Entinas and the Ribera de la Algaida. Amat identified the latter as where mosquitos most appear following rain as the water there does not drain away, saying every effort was made to control their proliferation in the zone. Parks and Gardens councillor Susi Ibañez talked about the importance of making residents aware they need to do their bit on their own properties to prevent the insects from appearing. For this reason, she said, 4,000 mosquito prevention campaign leaflets in English and Spanish are being put in multiple uses centres, tourist offices and the town hall. The information will also be published on the council website, including a phone number to report suspected mosquito concentrations.

Fridge dumper ends up in trouble AN Olula del Rio electrical shop worker and his employers are in trouble with the authorities after a video of the young man tossing an old fridge down a hillside in the Los Filabres mountains did the rounds on social media. ‘Recycling, we’re going to recycle it,’ and ‘how many rollovers,’ he jokes in the video, in which not only is his face clearly visible, but also the licence plate of the van he was driving. The Guardia Civil clearly didn’t find the v i d e o f u n n y. Th ey an n o u n ce d o n Twitter that the Almeria SEPRONA Nature Protection Service had identified the young man and was investigating the incident. Just days later the Guardia said it had carried out an inspection of the business where the fridge dumper was employed ‘to determine the responsibility both of the person who appears in the video and the company for which he was working delivering domestic electrical appliances.’ The Guardia statement said they found some 50 old washing machines aban-
doned on waste ground and approximately 20 old fridges indoors. The premises has no container for depositing electrical goods, the statement continued, and the company has not handed over any proof of the elimination of electrical apparatus and electronics residues to an authorised agent for the 10 years it had been operating. The investigation also revealed the young man had returned to the dumping spot after the video went viral and removed the fridge. The Guardia said it would inform the Andalucia regional government of the suspected failure to comply with regulations on electrical goods and electronics, and would continue investigations to determine if there was also an environmental crime. As Felicity has spent the last seven years helping her family with the upkeep of their local farms, she has, Emma said, “managed to capture the essence of each animal perfectly. “Her drawings are brilliant, and we are very proud of her.” Felicity and family relocated to Spain seven years ago. After a period of settling into her new life in Spain, and due to living on a farm, Felici-
t y ’s l o v e o f a n i m a l s b e came a large part of her development, Emma commented. She also revealed that coming from a creative background, Felicity quickly found she was a natural at music and art, and spends hours drawing. “She came into her own and certainly found her feet at her school in Albox, the Cardinal Cisneros,” Emma told EWN. “Felicity soon made lots of friends and the teachers have been fantastic.” The Merigan family have now decided to publ i s h t h e i r o w n c h i l d r e n ’s
storybook based on their personal farming experiences over the years in Spain. The book will include a full glossary at the back explaining any difficult words, as well as stories, and will be translated from Spanish to English by Felicity. Commented Emma, “All the family enjoy sharing any knowledge and experiences with others and this will be a fun way in which to do just that.” ‘Kylie, the Karate Chicke’n featuring Felicity’s illustrations is available on Amazon.

Square named after local VERA Council has unanimously approved renaming the town’s Plaza del Sol after much-loved local bar owner Jose ‘El Alicantino’ Ramon, who died recently at the age of 94. Vera mayor Jose Carmelo Jorge said Jose Ramon merited the honour for the person that he was and for his life’s work. The mayor also announced they were looking at awarding Jose Ramon the posthumous title of favourite son of Vera.

Urgent appeal to save dog rescuer’s sight A PENSIONER who has worked tirelessly for years rescuing abandoned dogs in Almeria says she is now in desperate need of help herself. Maz Bailey maintains she urgently requires eye surgery to save her sight, but is worried at how long she could be waiting for a public health service op and so is trying to raise €2,000 for private treatment. The 67-year old founder of charity Maz’s Canine Rescue has glaucoma in her right eye, she explained to the Euro Weekly News, commenting, “I haven’t got time to wait.” Just recently she had emergency hospital treatment for the condition. The pressure inside the eye is very high due to a cataract which is stopping it from draining and is therefore damaging her optic nerve, Maz said. “I have been told I will be blind in three months if the cataract is not removed,” Maz states on her ‘I need to fund an eye operation or go blind’ online Fundrazr page.

Back home ESCORIAL the loggerhead turtle is back in the sea where it belongs. Almeria Guardia Civil officers assisted by Equinac released the creature back into its natural environment following its recovery in the marine life rescue association’s centre. When the turtle was picked up its oesophagus was blocked due to ingesting plastic.
“My only option is to go private,” Maz further claims. Donations have already been made to Maz’s eye op cause. Zurgena resident Christine Maywood, along with other friends from Alfoquia, is one of the dog rescuer’s friends who is supporting her operation fundraising effort. Christine told the EWN, “Maz has done so much hard work rescuing animals during many years in Spain: all her pension and devotion goes into the dogs she takes in. “It would be a great loss to the rescue community if she was unable to carry on with her good work.” Huercal-Overa hospital told EWN earlier this week an appointment has been made for Maz to see an ophthalmologist in the first week of September to assess the current condition of her eyes and the need for surgery. The hospital stressed Maz can go to the emergencies department at any time.

THE WEEK IN POLITICS By Joe Gerrard SPAIN’S acting prime minister is once again courting smaller parties in the Congress of Deputies to secure support for a return to power after his investiture vote failure. Pedro Sanchez began by travelling to Valencia City to meet with representatives from the regional Compromis party. He was joined by the leftleaning Partido Socialista’s (PSOE) Organisational Secretary and acting Development Minister Jose Luis Abalos. Acting Finance Minister Maria Jesus Montero said ahead of the visit that Sanchez would keep ‘discreet’ channels of communication open with such parties. Sanchez’s current situation is a far cry from PSOE’s triumphalism following April’s general election and May’s local, regional and European vote. Although PSOE won 123 seats, short of the 176 needed for a majority, a deal with the leftist Podemos and a handful of smaller parties seemed like a

That, coupled with the rout of the conservative Partido Popular (PP) and an underwhelming showing from the far-right Vox despite forecasts they would bag several seats, gave the left confidence. But now the picture is completely different. PSOE’s talks with Podemos ran until the 11th hour but came to naught, resulting in the latter abstaining in two investiture
votes which Sanchez lost. That began a countdown for the acting prime minister to strike a workable deal and restage the votes by Monday September 23 or hold another election. Hence this week’s meeting with Compromis. The party has one seat in Congress, but Sanchez needs all the support he can get. King Felipe, whose constitutional duties include overseeing
indecisive electoral outcomes such as April’s, has said he would prefer politicians to reach an agreement before returning to the polls. Uncertainty abounds, but one constant is that the PP and the centrist Ciudadanos both remain steadfast in their decision to vote against Sanchez’s investiture come what may. Both parties have no doubt factored in the possibility of another election which could see the PP in particular claw back its April losses. But the approach is placing a strain on Ciudadanos. Leader Albert Rivera recently packed the party’s National Executive with figures loyal to his approach after a raft of protest resignations. Meanwhile, Podemos sources indicated they wanted to reopen talks with Sanchez. But their chances of getting a coalition offer may have narrowed since they rejected the last one.
Coalitions common POLITICIANS across Spain’s regions have overwhelmingly acquiesced to coalition deals to govern after May’s elections while their national counterparts continue trying to come to terms with the fractured political landscape. Analysis in Spanish media this week showed almost 40 million Spanish people now live under coalition governments at a regional level. Only four regional governments, Asturians, Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha and Galicia are run by one party. The left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) controls the former three while the conservative Partido Popular (PP) rules the latter. Elsewhere coalitions, sometimes featuring multiples parties, are the norm. Aragon and the Canary Islands are both governed by four-way coalitions. Two or three parties tends to be more common, and the way they align shows who could be prepared to work with who nationally. The PP governs in four regions, Andaucia, Castilla y Leon, Madrid and Murcia, thanks to pacts with the centrist Ciudadanos. The pact struck between the two parties in Andalucia at the start of this year, including backing from the far-right Vox, has become their blueprint for achieving regional power. Elsewhere PSOE typically sides with the leftist Podemos achieving what acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez could not. It also tends to work with regionalist parties.

Jail for two of the six Bilbao ‘wolfpack’ THE judge residing over the Bilbao ‘wolfpack’ case has sentenced two of the accused to jail, with the remaining four released with a provisional order to attend court every day. The length of the jail term is not yet known, however the ruling has angered some. The Federation of Neighbourhood Associations of Bilbao has expressed their disbelief at only two of the four attackers receiving a jail term. “If the six have participated in the rape, the six must have
the same fate. The victim will be able to cross the street with their aggressors. What about the judiciary?” exclaimed a spokesperson from the group. The events took place in the early hours of Friday morning where an 18-year-old girl was lured to a makeshift camp in a municipal park in Ertzaintza, Bilbao. It was there where she was attacked and raped by six men of what has been revealed as Moroccan and Algerian nationalities. The National Police appre-
hended the men shortly after the attack due to a description given by the victim. The two attackers will enter Basauri Prison to see out their sentence. The Federation of Neighbourhood Associations of Bilbao has also announced that it is working closely with the Clara Campoamor Association to set up police points across the city where people can report anything suspicious or threatening. They are also concerned that more things can be done to prevent such things happening again in the future. “Sometimes criminals enter through one door and exit through the other of the court despite having numerous crimes behind them” explained the group after learning that three of the six detainees have a history of robbery, fighting and aggression.

CONFIDENCE in the EU has grown by nine percentage points in Spain since last year and approval now stands at 47 per cent, according to a new survey. The Eurobarometer, which measures social and political attitudes across the bloc, found support for the bloc rose by two percentage points across the EU on average. BREXIT BRIEF Health insurance risk BRITISH travellers could be left without health coverage while holidaying in Europe if Britain leaves the EU without a deal in October, a senior opposition Labour figure has said. Shadow Culture Secretary Tom Watson told British media ‘millions’ of families would face more expensive holidays because of the government’s no-deal approach. “Over the school summer holidays, families across the country will have saved and planned for a holiday to spend special, quality time together, but this prime minister’s mishandling of Brexit could make holiday prices rocket,” Watson said. “Boris Johnson’s reckless, senseless approach to Brexit will leave working families worse off. He must urgently rethink and take no deal off the table,” he added. British holidaymakers would no longer be covered by European Health Insurance Cards (EHIC) if Britain leaves without a deal and would have to buy travel insurance. The cards cover travellers for health claims ‘medically necessary’ treatment while travelling in the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland. Figures obtained by Labour showed more than 21,200 claims were made for under 16s under the scheme from January to June this year. It comes as the NHS recently issued advice stating access to EU healthcare is ‘likely to change’ under a no-deal.

The European Commission is due to hold talks with Boris Johnson to find a way forward on Brexit. A spokesperson for the Commission said the meetings aimed to avoid a no-deal which they added would cause significant economic disruption. Johnson’s pledge to broker a better deal than predecessor Theresa May faced an immediate stumbling block. Commission spokesperson Mina Andreeva said the bloc would not reopen the draft Withdrawal Agreement negotiated last year. She added the EU could revisit the political declaration, the document which sketches out what a future relationship between Britain and the bloc would look like. Opportunities for Argentine migrants The Spanish government has authorised work permits for more than 1,000 Argentine students to enter the country and apply for roles. The applicants are made up of students between the ages of 25 and 30 years with medium and high qualifications in the technological, research and financial sectors. Out of 3,000 applicants, 1,084 have been selected to receive a three month work visa. In that time they will have chance to have interviews with the companies they organised whilst in Argentina, and once a role has been confirmed, contracts and
residencies will be issued. The scheme is the first implementation of an existing policy that was originally drafted in 2003, however this pioneering authorisation sees the first time it has been used. A REPORT on hate crime by the Ministry of Interior has highlighted the concerning figures after a video of an attack by Madrid railway staff on a black man was leaked online. The video went viral last Friday and appeared to show two metro security guards beating a man who, according to statements, refused to leave the station. An investigation is underway into the attack and the firm which employed the guards, Integral Security Group (GSI).
Hate crime rise This is the latest incident in a year that has been tainted by apparent racist, homophobic and xenophobic attacks and has prompted the Ministry of Interior to release figures of hate crimes to force local governments into taking drastic action. Hate crimes were first officially recorded
in 2013 where 1,172 specific reports were received by the National Police. In 2017 the figure rose by nearly 21 per cent to 1,419. The largest of the increases occurred between 2016 and 2017 with 2016’s figures being 1,272. According to statistics, the majority of

these crimes occur through racism or xenophobia with a total of 2,301 over the span of five years. Sexual orientation was second followed by religious beliefs. The Ministry of Interior closed the report with a plea to local governments across the country. “Acting against hate crimes helps improve the coexistence of a multicultural society, formed by different people and, as a direct consequence, will mean living in a better society.”
AI ‘opportunity’ SPAIN has an opportunity to become a European leader in artificial intelligence (AI), its industry minister has said. Reyes Maroto, who attended a recent confe re nc e on the s ubje c t, sai d Spai n had learned about the technological possibilities of AI ‘very fast’ despite joining the race late.
“We have the resources and the talent. We are already deploying 5G networks and we must also take advantage of this second digital dividend,” Maroto said. Waterfall death A 26-YEAR-OLD Spanish man has died after what appears to have been a fatal fall from a waterfall on the Thai Island Ko Samui. The Spanish Embassy in Thailand has made contact with the family of the deceased and organised for his body to be returned to Spain. The deceased, who has been referred to as DR, was travelling around Asia last week with a group of seven friends enjoying the scenery and nightlife that the Ko Samui island in the Gulf of Thailand offers. DR and his friends reportedly decided to visit the series of waterfalls that is known as the Na Muang 2 waterfall area which is popular amongst visitors but notoriously unsafe. While crossing one of the precipices, DR’s friends recall that he was nowhere to be seen so they started to look for him. When he didn’t show up they called the police and later notified the Kuson Songkroh Foundation who sent out a search party. Later in the evening, after a search party had been looking for DR for some time, his body was located between two rocks further downstream. It wasn’t until the morning after however that his body was recovered as the police were not able to reach him in the dark. DR’s body is currently in Ko Samui hospital and is undergoing a post-mortem to accurately assess the cause of death.

By Marco March A GANG that has allegedly smuggled 100 immigrants into Spain in 2019 and held a rival gang member hostage has been broken up. National Police in Ceuta in collaboration with Europol arrested 10 people during seven searches in which they seized €4,700, three kilos of hashish, more than 1,000 tablets of karkubi - mixed hashish and psychotropic drugs - various knives and a fake gun. The organisation sold Spanish identity documents to foreigners and smuggled Moroccan citizens into Spain by inflatable boats. The nature of the organisation, which was also involved in drug trafficking, was of a markedly violent nature, even carrying out the kidnapping of a member of another criminal gang. The kidnapped person was held for five days in a house located in the Ceutí del Príncipe neighbourhood, where he received continuous physical and psychological attacks until the required payment was made for a debt he owed the gang.

It also depends on what is on offer at what time as some fatty foods are best consumed earlier in the day. Of course dietary advice goes hand in hand with exercise so SEDCA also recommend an active lifestyle which they suggest can be achieved by walking as much as possible. Oil boss found dead
TROUBLE: Inflation in Venezuela is over 10 million per cent causing global unrest. THE head of the Venezuelan oil company PDVSA has been found dead in an office in Madrid. The circumstances surrounding the death of Juan Carlos Marquez Cabrera are currently being investigated but police have so far eluded to suicide as the most obvious cause. Cabrera is of Spanish origin but had worked in Venezuela for many years un-
der the leadership of Hugo Chavez. For his role in the Venezuelan oil industry he was always a character of great interest for the US due to the ties that they and Russia both share in the business. Cabrera was allegedly prepared to divulge sensitive details pertaining to the Venezuelan oil industry at a US court hearing after receiving several corruption charges from a judge in
Madrid last week. The accused claimed that he knew many things in relation to Venezuela’s biggest export such as the origin of several million dollar transactions that have gone under the radar. After Cabrera was reportedly found dead with his belt wrapped around his neck earlier this week, the judge ordered that the case be investigated immediately.
Fireman saves boy A FOUR-YEAR-OLD child has an off-duty fireman and first aid-trained hotel staff to thank for his life after he started to choke on an ice lolly. Victor Monzon, a fireman in Gran Canaria, was on holiday with his wife and little boy at the island’s Cordial Mogán Hotel. His wife entered the dining room when she noticed the situation: Marcos, a four-year-old boy, had choked on an ice lolly and was suffocating. She alerted her husband, who rushed to help, aware that time is of the essence in these cases. The child
was already being cared for by the hotel’s sector chief, Juani González, who like the rest of the workers have first aid qualifications. “Everything happened very quickly, in thousandths of a second,” explained Victor. “I took the child, who had turned blue, and I put him face down to give him a few slaps on the back.” What he put into practice was the Heimlich manoeuvre, a first aid procedure that removes obstructions from the airway, using the variant for babies and young children.
Georgian gang busted A GANG of Georgian burglars who toured Spain to commit their crimes has been arrested in Salamanca. Members of the National Police of Salamanca have dismantled the criminal or-
ganisation, detaining six men during raids on three homes. The gang allegedly travelled to towns across Spain on burglary ‘tours’ where they would carry out several break-ins in a single day
before returning to Salamanca with their loot. Police say the gang was well organised with each member having a clearly defined role. The detainees have been brought before the courts.

Organ donation LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics.
As of 2010, Spain has operated an ‘opt-out’ (or presumed consent) system for deceased organ donation. This addresses the rate or refusal of potential donors or their families in giving permission for the use of organs. The rate of family refusal in Spain is 13 per cent, compared to 37 per cent in England (according to the National Transplant Organisation figures - ONT). According to the ONT, Brits living in Spain are more likely to donate their organs than their countrymen back home. It’s not necessary to have a donor card. What is important is to let family members and loved ones know your wishes in terms of organ donation. Figures published by the Spanish ONT in 2017 put the country as world leader in donation and transplants, reaching a new record with 46.9 donors per million people and 5.261 transplants. Spain has been a global leader in organ donation and transplantation for the past 26 years. Broken down by organ, there were 3,269 kidney surgeries (up 9 per cent on 2016), 1,247 liver transplants (up 8 per cent), 304 heart procedures (8 per cent rise), 363 lung surgeries (up 18 per cent), 70 pancreas transplants (down 4 per cent) and eight bowel surgical procedures (up 100 per cent). According to the National Transplant Organisation (ONT), these surgeries are equivalent to six donors and 14 surgical procedures a day. In addition, Spain saw a new record in bone marrow donation last year, with 78,291 new donors and an increase of 196 per cent over the previous year. At this rate, the country could reach its target of 400,000 bone marrow donors well before the mid-2020 goal. In Spain the number of those on the waiting list was reduced to 4,896 in 2017, from 5,480, although the number of children waiting for organs increased to 74, from 48 a year earlier. Lung and heart are viable for four to six hours after death, liver and pancreas 24 hours, kidney 72 hours, corneas 14 days, bone and skin five years, and heart valves up to 10 years. Small intestines, veins, tendons and ligaments can also be donated. A single organ donor can save up to eight people and a single tissue donor may enhance the lives of up to 50 people. Jeremy Corbyn said Labour would push for a no confidence vote at a point where they can win it. Boris Johnson said calling a general election

CAR sales have fallen in Spain for the first time since July 2012, with the number of purchases last month 11 per cent less than last year industry figures show. Data from the ANFAC, Faconauto and Ganvam associations found almost 116,690 cars were sold in July. ANFAC said: “The situation is worrying, especially if one takes into account that July is one of the best months for families buying cars.” The carmakers’ association has called for ‘shock measures’ to reverse the decline.

Data from the Public Employment Service (SEPE) showed the figures had grown for the fifth year in a row. Andalucia, had the highest conversion rate with 48.4 per cent. More than 397,700 temporary contracts became indefinite during the first half of this year, the first time the number has fallen in absolute terms since 2013.

IAG profit fall COMPANIES belonging to the International Airlines Group (IAG) made a total consolidated profit of €806 million in the first half of this year, a year-on-year fall of 42.3 per cent. Accounts sent to the National Stock Market Commission (CNMV) showed total pre-tax profits stood at more than €1 billion, 11.7 per cent lower than January to June 2018. CEO Willie Walsh said the company had performed solidly despite the drop, with passenger revenues rising by 1.1 per cent. Ticket revenues rose by 7.2 per cent. The company’s fuel and emission permits costs also rose by 20.5 per cent, hitting overall earnings.

Plan to tackle hiring fraud OFFICIALS with the Labour Ministry have drawn up plans to combat the fraudulent hiring of workers on incorrect contracts. The ministry is set to use its Anti-Fraud Tool to detect possible irregularities this month. September is due to see letters being sent to companies warning them they will have one month to put workers on correct contracts. Ministry officials are planning on conducting a
round of inspections in October at companies suspected of not complying with these requests. The move comes as part of the government’s Master Plan for Decent Work 2018-2020 which was approved a year ago with the agreement of employers and trade unions. Figures show there were more than 48,550 inspections at companies thought to be improperly hiring workers from August 2018 to June.

Calviño out of IMF head race SPAIN’S economy minister is no longer running to lead the International Monetary Fund (IMF) after the government agreed to withdraw her candidacy to achieve a European consensus on the appointment. Government sources said Nadia Calviño would no longer seek to lead the IMF, a key pillar in the global financial system. “The government is committed to achieving a European agreement so Economy Minister Nadia Calviño will not go through to the next selection phase,” the sources said. “We will continue to work to put Spanish officials forward for the governance of international organisations and we consider it an honour that any member of the government is considered,” they added. Calviño’s departure from the race comes as European leaders remained at loggerheads over who would succeed current IMF director Christine Lagarde last week. She said a full consensus was yet to be reached as she prepares to step down.
Jobless higher than 18 states THERE are more people out of work in Spain than in 18 other EU member states combined, according to the bloc’s latest unemployment figures. The latest figures from the Eurostat data agency showed there were more than 3.2 million people out of work in Spain as of June. A total of 18 other countries have almost three million people out of work between them, still below the amount in Spain. Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Croatia, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Austria, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia and Sweden’s combined rate of unemployment was still lower than Spain’s. Those countries have a combined population of around 120 million compared to Spain’s 47 million, showing the proportion of people out of work was also higher. The Spanish proportion of unemployed was higher than two of the EU’s largest economies, France and Germany. France, which has a population of 67 million, had 2.5 million out of work in June, while Germany with 83 million people had 1.3 million unemployed.

Bankruptcy rate decline CHEAPER: ADIF hopes train companies will pass on savings to customers.
Rail changes on track THE body which manages Spain’s railway infrastructure has paved the way for the country’s publicy-owned train company to cut prices ahead of the market’s opening to competition. ADIF has changed the system used to calculate what it charges to Renfe in fees and taxes, as well as those of the company’s future competitors. The Spanish rail market is due to be opened to competition from December 2020 under EU rules. ADIF president Isabel Pardo unveiled the changes as part of the body’s strategy for the period from 2020 to 2025, the first five years of
rail market liberalisation. Operators will be offered discounts on fees if they increase the number of trains on Spanish tracks to reward them for increasing services, the plans state. Aena, the body which manages Spanish airports, uses a similar system for charging airlines. Pardo said ADIF was offering the discounts on the understanding savings would be passed on to customers through ticket price cuts. The president added ADIF would consider allowing Renfe to run night trains under its AVE high speed service to better compete with rivals.
They would be allowed to run at night provided they did not interfere with track maintenance, Pardo said. Both plans are subject to changes to Spain’s Railway Law which are pending the investiture of a new government following the indecisive result of April’s snap general election. France’s publicly-owned SNCF, ILSA, Globalia and Britain’s Virgin have all said they are interested in entering the Spanish rail market after it is opened to competition. ADIF is set to chose the first companies which will be allowed to operate in Spain this December.
GDP growth slows THE Spanish economy grew by 0.5 per cent in the second quarter of this year, down from the first quarter rate of 0.7 per cent according to new figures. Figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) showed gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 2.3 per cent between the second quarters of 2018 and this year. The rate was down from the first quarter year-on-year rate of 2.4 per cent. The INE said in a statement national demand had fallen during the second quarter, but external demand grew at the same time. The growth rates fell just shy of those forecast by the Bank of Spain. The central bank predicted GDP would grow by 0.6 per cent quarteron-quarter and by 2.4 per cent yearon-year. The General Council of Economist’s Financial Observatory said the slowdown was caused in part by a fall in domestic demand. Data showed household consumption increased by 1.7 per cent from the second quarter of 2018 to that of this year. The rate of growth was 0.2 percentage points higher than the first quarter’s year-on-year rate.
THE amount of families and businesses which declared bankruptcy fell by 4.6 per cent and 13.6 per cent respectively from the second quarter of 2018 to April to June this year, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
New store SWEDISH fashion chain H&M has opened a new store in the Alicante Province town of Alcoy’s Alzamora shopping centre after making net profits of almost €510 million in the first half of this year.
Sea delivery FOOD delivery company Deliveroo has unveiled plans to launch a service to serve boats off the coast of 17 Spanish cities this summer, similar to services launched in Britain in 2017 and for riverboats in Paris in 2018.
Costs to fall THE National Commission for Markets and Competition (CNMC) has approved a 33 per cent cut in tariffs for fixed network phone calls, a reduction from more than 0.08 cents a minute to around 0.064.
‘Tough’ month SPANISH manufacturing contracted last month, according to the purchasing managers index (PMI) which registered 48.2 points which IHS Markit economist Paul Smith said was another ‘difficult’ month for industry. SLOWDOWN: Spain’s economic output grew at a slower rate during the second quarter of this year. Government administrative spending grew year-on-year by 1.9 per cent, 0.1 points less than in the first quarter. Investment grew by 1.2 per cent year-on-year compared to the 4.7 per cent rise from the first quarter of 2018 to this year. Investment in capital goods shrank by 1.4 per cent year-on-year in the
second quarter after growing by 7.2 per cent from the first quarter of 2018 to 2019. The latter indicator is seen as a litmus test of business confidence in future economic activity. Construction grew by 5.8 per cent year-on-year, 0.8 percentage points less than the equivalent rate for the first quarter.
Plant sale ALUMINIUM maker Alcoa has sold factories in Asturias and Galicia to the Swiss for Parter Capital for about €115 million after nine months of talks between the firms and stakeholders including government officials and trade unions.

The great, now sadly lamented, Joe Longthorne MBE LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT THIS week saw the passing of probably one of the finest variety entertainers the UK has ever produced. So mystified was I at the extraordinary initial lack of main media coverage, I decided to dedicate this week’s offering to his memory. I’m talking of the great, now sadly lamented, Joe Longthorne MBE. Joe was world class. Unfortunately, over the years, those who managed his career and well-being were not. Consequently, even after appearances in Las Vegas and success on TV, this multi-talented vocal impressionist, never maintained the world accolades he so richly deserved. Nevertheless, his UK theatre tours, club dates and charity functions were always sold out and he never failed his thousands of adoring fans. Throughout his long battle with cancer, Joe continued to follow the profession he loved, and only recently pulled out of his latest tour when the dis-

ease simply became too overwhelming. Although I hadn’t seen Joe for some years, I have followed him closely on social media and have often related the circumstances surrounding my first meeting with this highly amusing and lovable entertainer. It was back in the late 70’s. I had been engaging in an ultimately disastrous business enterprise to bring live entertainment to the expats working in Saudi Arabia. We had brought in a few shows and decided in the light of somewhat limited success, to ‘up the ante’ and import a rather more upmarket group of acts. Joe, then relatively unknown, was one of the artists we selected. On the bill we also engaged a band, which comprised of five young musicians who worked under the name of ‘Coaster’ - a title which by sheer coincidence happened to be the name of the model of local buses in Jeddah at the time. The cast duly arrived and after a couple of days, decided they wanted to visit the local Souk. Now Jeddah, in those days, was not exactly conducive to tourism and ‘Westerners’ were looked on with no small amount of apprehension and suspicion. Instructing the boys to be as inconspicuous as
possible, I told our Yemeni chauffer to drive them to the local market. They promised to be back for tea - they weren’t! A nail biting hour or so later, the door flew open and the driver rushed in. In a complete panic he told me the band had been arrested! Apparently the boys, including Joe, had seen what they thought was a dumping ground for crashed cars and buses and had been trying to prise off one of the chrome ‘Coaster’ emblems as a keepsake. In fact the site was actually the local police pound! I hurried down, my thoughts a turmoil of possible deportations, lashings and Lord knows what. I needn’t have bothered. As I approached the circle of police surrounding the group, I realised they were all laughing! There in the centre was Joe. Notwithstanding a total language barrier, he had the whole bunch of them in peals of laughter. They actually escorted us all home. That was Joe Longthorne, a truly unique international artist of the very first order. RIP Joe. Far more deserving of a knighthood than others I could mention! A BIT of a rant this week (so what’s new, I hear you say!). First off, news that struggling British high streets experienced their worst month in 24 years in May as sales fell at the highest rate on record potentially leading to further closures. Followed by reports that more than 200 Boots stores across the UK could be closed by their American owners in a bid to cut costs, Boots join the list of a string of well-known names suffering in the tough high street environment. Last year, Poundworld, Toys R Us and Maplin all went bust and disappeared altogether. Other household names - Homebase, Mothercare, Carpetright and New Look - were forced into restructuring deals with their landlords, closing hundreds of stores. Changing consumer behaviour as shoppers spend more on experiences and increasing concerns about the economic outlook post-Brexit are continuing to wreak havoc on the industry. Yet if British high streets are being left empty, then Primark, which notched up 50 years in business in June, seems indestructible. Sales increased by 4 per cent in the six months to March, while established brands (such as Debenhams and LK Bennett) were going belly up and, under pressure from online shopping

LOW POINT: May was the worst month in 24 years. and popular fast-fashion brands, the fate of Sir Philip Green’s Topshop empire was left hanging by a thread (see what I did there?). And it’s even more surprising that the UK’s biggest fashion retailer by volume (though not by value) has succeeded without moving into online shopping. Basically, Primark’s message is: if you want it, you have to get off your **** and go buy it. And clearly mega-crowds do. Its brand-new Birmingham mega-store is almost a tourist destination, day-trippers magnetised by its in-store blow-dry bar, beauty salon and Disney-themed cafe. Primark proves that brands can’t just stay still. Companies have to keep reinventing
themselves with fresh products - trading on past glories no longer cuts it. Nonetheless, it’s sad that with fewer Boots around soon there’ll be nothing much left on the high street bar betting shops and Oxfam... Can they pay him less? I am 71 years old, retired, and I receive a state pension from the UK. At the last municipal elections I was elected councillor. I was told that I am not entitled to the retribution of €16,000 per year which the other part-time councillors receive, because this salary is incompatible with my pension. Instead, I am offered a payment of €700 a month for attending the monthly ‘Information Commission’ meetings and €300 a month for attending the council meetings. If I don’t attend, I don’t get paid. I do not receive any expenses or benefits. This sounds wrong to me. Can you please tell me if the decision taken by the town hall is correct? S B (Costa Blanca) In principle, yes, it is correct. Spanish YOU AND THE law states that a LAW IN SPAIN pensioner can earn up to the amount of the legal minimum wage without affecting the amount of his pension. After a big jump last year the legal minimum wage for 2019 is almost €10,000. The councillor’s salary of €16,000 is well above this. Because the Spanish tax man cannot reduce your UK pension, it seems they have found a way around this.

Ain’t what it used to be CASSANDRA NASH A WEEKLY LOOK - and not entirely impartial reaction to the Spanish political scene
THE Left can’t get it together and it’s not all that easy for the Right, especially Albert Rivera. He doesn’t want to be seen cosying up to the ultra-Right, but is too ambitious to renounce the power brought by the three-way Partido Popular Ciudadanos and Vox arrangement. Inside his party, Rivera occupies a political no-man’s-land where he calls the shots in splendid and increasingly autocratic isolation. Ciudadanos founder Francesc de Carreras has left the party, likewise C’ Economy spokesman Toni Roldan. De Carreras lamented that the party is no longer what it set out to be, and Roldan said that Albert Rivera puts his own interests before those of the party and Spain. In an informal online poll in the Catalan daily La Vanguardia 84.65 per cent of participants believed that
Rivera would eventually pay - in votes - for his dalliance and ill-disguised alliance with Vox. And a probable November general election will show whether Rivera paid a bargain price for his Vox-enabled elevation or was sold a pup.
Hitting the big time IF Podemos and the party supremo Pablo Iglesias were destined
to hit the big time, it would have happened by now. Iglesias presumably believed that erupting onto the political scene in the European elections of 2014 by taking five seats had set the pattern for Podemos’ national trajectory. Support amongst the undecided and politically-uncommitted has drifted away with each national, regional and local election, but
Iglesias and Podemos nomenclature have not yet received and digested this message. If, as he maintained, Iglesias really did hope for a left-wing progressive government, he would have put his own ambitions to one side and voted in favour of Pedro Sanchez in the investiture debate. The other half of the Unidas Podemos tandem, Izquierda Uni-

da, increasingly favours backing Sanchez, asking for nothing in return. After all, it is more blessed to give than receive and Sanchez would have been - could still be eternally in their debt. Trouble is, Iglesias knew that a role in a putative Sanchez government, even in the shadows, was his only remaining chance of hitting the big time. He blew it and the small time is all he can expect now.

Both are looking for buyers now, yet one you may have to wait a little longer for delivery than the other. So time enough to get sated rather than bored before having yet more fun with the second. The Mercedes-AMG GT R is available now for deliveries in the autumn and uses a hand built biturbo four-litre V8 engine to push this supercar from 0 to 62 mph in 3.6 seconds. The Lotus Evija will go a little faster, but let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves as they are very different cars.
Back to the Mercedes-AMG, its top speed is electronically limited to 197 miles hour. Yes, that’s a lot and there are going to be few roads that will permit the attempt to reach that top speed without winning a long conversation with an angry speed cop and a large fine. Inspired by Le Mans race cars an intriguing exterior element are the Venturi Tunnels which pierces each rear quarter of the Evija, directing airflow through the bodyshell. A visual exclamation mark yet this design element pursues a concept known as ‘porosity’ the delivery of high energy air flow to the rear of the car, this reduces the low pressure behind the car and so reduces drag. The car goes faster! When viewed from the rear each Venturi tunnel is illuminated with red LED evoking the afterburner effect of a fighter jet especially when seen at night. To make the point Lotus fit an extra LED hidden within the tunnel to illuminate its interior. I READ the news of Spain’s PSOE and Podemos failing to agree to a coalition with despair and I see it as a missed opportunity. I had looked forward to a new government that would serve the interests of workers here in Spain rather than those of big business. As a Brit I have watched as rightwing governments there and in Spain loot and pillage their countries to serve their corporate puppet masters. Taxes for the wealthiest have been slashed while ordinary people have been punished with brutal austerity regimes. PSOE and Podemos had a chance to put an end to this but they failed to take it. Their failure to put aside party politics and unite on a left-wing basis is tragic but it will ultimately be the working class, not they, who pay the price. The two party’s lack of political vision may allow reaction to rear its ugly head. Owen Carlson

A SCHEME which saw 45 children from Africa’s Western Sahara travel to northern Spain for summer holidays shows what can be achieved with global thinking and international solidarity. The ‘Holidays for Peace’ scheme saw children aged between nine and 12 visit Asturias’ Oviedo. They will not only benefit from cooler climes. Such schemes help both the children and people here in Spain look beyond the narrow confines of nations and see that we are all part of one global community. When people from different backgrounds come together they are able to share ideas, experiences and cultures not only to their benefit, but to the betterment of all. The children can learn that the world offers opportunities for exploration and for making meaningful connections in the most unlikely places with the most unexpected people. Barriers of country, religion, culture and society soon evaporate and what is left is one human being enjoying the company of another. The children will also have much-needed respite from conditions in their home countries that are tough to say the least. Western Sahara was annexed by Morocco in the late 1970s. The UN and NGOs have repeatedly denounced the occupation and its associated human rights abuses. The children now have a respite from the fear and suspicion living under such conditions produces. Everyone needs to have holidays to rest, but we should think ourselves fortunate that we do not have to return to such situations.

Leap of faith jump, that leap of faith. Staying in a place where they do not belong any more. And it gives them pain. Pain which is in that moment more ok than the belief, the trust that the next step will be even better for them. Who are we to decide that another person needs to change, needs to take that leap. If at that certain moment a human being needs to stay on the rather safer site than that which is ok. We all have our reasons, our fears, our time to take the leap. Or not take it at all. Sometimes it takes a long time before we jump. That is ok too. There is totally nothing wrong with being happy with where you are in life. But if you keep on hearing
that nagging voice in your head that you have to jump… then just jump. If we listen to our body, heart and soul. Really listen. W e
know very well what is good for us or not. Most of the time we do not trust enough that feeling. Fear and trust. Two powerful words. Taking the leap is about trusting, even though you do not see the net to catch you, knowledge that you will land safely. Think for a moment about all

More than skin deep HEALTHY skin, full of vitality tends to be the preserve of the young and beautiful. As we age our skin loses its elasticity. Skin also becomes thinner and more fragile; glands lose their ability to effectively moisturise the skin and it’s therefore common for older adults to have dry skin. Here are our top tips for keeping you and your skin looking at their best and keeping it that way. Use warm water rather than hot when you wash, and avoid taking too many baths or showers. Use mild cleansers rather than harsh soaps and alcohol-based products. Consider using a fragrance-free moisturiser and keep your skin well hydrated to help prevent the cracking and itchiness that can accompany dry skin. Stay out of the sun, whenever possible, during the time when rays are strongest, 10am to 4pm. Remember you can get sunburnt even when it’s cloudy or when you’re in water. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF of 35 or more. Apply it 15 to 30 minutes before going out and reapply every two hours. When outside in the sun, wear loose, lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and long pants or long skirts, along with a wide-brimmed hat. Also wear sunglasses that block the sun’s rays to protect your eyes. Smoking damages your skin in numerous ways, contributes to wrinkles and gen-

It’s all in the eyes HERE are some tips to keep your eyes healthy: * Get regular eye tests. The tests carried out by an optician will not only detect eye conditions such as glaucoma, but can actually detect medical conditions like diabetes. * Wear decent quality sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun. Sunglasses help prevent certain eye diseases related to the sun. Prolonged exposure to the sun’s UV rays can lead to cataracts, and macular degeneration. It’s therefore important that your sunglasses provide 100 per cent UV protection. * Eat healthily, particularly plenty of fish, fruit and vegetables which have specific nutrients that are important for eye health. Remember the old joke, ‘Are carrots good for your eyes?’ and the answer was, ‘Of course, have you ever seen a rabbit wearing glasses?’ Well actually there is some truth in the joke, Carrots are high in vitamin A, a nutrient essential for good vision and eating carrots will provide you with the small amount of vitamin A. Try to ensure that you eat a balanced diet containing sufficient omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, and vitamins C and E. * Dry eyes can be a problem. Drinking more water can help. Mild dehydration often makes dry eye problems worse. This is especially true during hot, dry and windy weather. Simply drinking more water sometimes reduces the symptoms of dry eye syndrome. * Stop smoking. Smoking is harmful to the eyes. Research has shown that smoking increases the risk of agerelated macular degeneration, glaucoma and cataracts. Cigarette smoke irritates the eyes and will worsen dry eyes.

RUSTIC TART: A really easy dish to make.
ALTHOUGH we have a number of beautiful fruit trees here at Olive Tree Farm, there are many that we do not have but still enjoy to eat, so the markets are a wonderful place to go and buy them from. The colours of the fruit stalls here are a joy to see. The hustle and bustle of people choosing their fruit and vegetables is a pleasure to watch. This week’s recipe is another version of galette, or rustic tart. I have to admit, I prefer the French word, it sounds almost exotic. Again, this is a really easy dish to make; why make life more difficult than it needs to be. If you cut and place your fruit carefully you can make it look really pretty, but remember to have your baking tray ready to sit your pastry on before you fill it, as you have no chance of moving it onto the tray and keeping it intact once it is filled, it will fall apart. Ingredients: One round sheet of shortcrust pastry (I used ready-made Quebrada-Brisa) 4 large peaches, halved and de-

stoned 4-6 dark red plums, halved and destoned 2 teaspoons lemon juice 2 teaspoons cornflour 2 teaspoons granulated sugar (plus extra for sprinkling over before baking)
1 teaspoon vanilla essence A pinch of salt 1 egg yolk beaten with a little milk for brushing over the pastry Method: Pre-heat your oven to 200ºC Line a baking tray with baking paper Sit your pastry circle on the paper. Slice your peach and plum halves to about ¼” slices and arrange in the centre of your pastry leaving a gap of about 2” around the outside edge. In a small bowl, mix together the lemon juice, cornflour, sugar, vanilla essence and salt and drizzle over the fruit. Using your fingers, gently wrap the bare pastry edges upwards, pinching the pastry together as you work your way round. Brush the pastry with the egg and milk. Sprinkle a little more sugar over the top of the fruit and over the pastry. Bake in the centre of the oven for approximately 20-25 mins until the pastry is golden. Serve whilst still warm with cream or ice cream.

This evening, Thursday, youngsters can burn up some serious energy on bouncy castles in the Plaza del Fronton in Mojacar Pueblo and meet some much-loved TV and film stars. The inflatable fun will be back on Monday in the same venue from 7pm onwards, along with activities like face painting, wack a mole, bouncy
bootcamp and hungry hippos. The following Monday evening, August 19, there will be more junior-orientated fun in the village’s Plaza Nueva: a jumping ring and play-park, games, story-telling and more. Coming up this weekend, Mojacar’s pretty outlying hamlet Sopalmo celebrates its annual fiesta, featuring ribbon races, dancing and the chance to try some of the best local cuisine.

WORK has officially begun on the construction of Fines’ municipal art and culture centre. Almeria provincial council President Javier A Garcia and Fines mayor Rodrigo Sanchez laid the first stone of the 200-capacity theatre auditorium in the Plaza de San Esteban in the town’s historic centre. The €500,000 investment in the facilities comes under the provincial authority’s 2018-2019 Scenic Spaces Plan. The council president said the provincial government was not only building the municipality’s
first theatre but would also “fill it with cultural performances, theatre, cinema and art” to make it the “epicentre of the Almanzora.” The Fines mayor described the project as “a dream fulfilled,” which “will allow residents to enjoy a quality offer of culture and our municipal theatre group a space for their rehearsals and performances. “We were the only municipality without a space of these characteristics, and from today we will start to see it become a reality,” Sanchez added.

GUARDIA CIVIL detained a man suspected of breaking into two vehicles in Macael after identifying him from security camera footage. Both break-ins took place at around the same time on July 21. One of the cars was parked in a public street and the other in a communal garage. The robber broke or forced open a window to get his hands on the items inside, including the vehicle documentation. Video cameras in the garage caught the thief in action and revealed he had a peculiarity in one leg when he walked. This led to the identification of 38-year-old BCS from San Javier in Murcia. The Guardia reported the detainee has an extensive record for similar crimes.

ALBOX can look forward to a super sporty September when the municipality will be staging a range of events and competitions. Albox mayor Francisco Torrecillas, accompanied by Sports councillor Juan Luis Montoya, Tourism councillor Virginia Saez, and sports activity expert Luis D Sanchez, unveiled details of the ‘50 hours of sport on the street’ initiative last week. The council said the initiative was aimed at getting children to see the importance of sport for good health, while also serving as the starting point for the municipality’s sporting programme from autumn onwards. Events get going with the AlboxEl Saliente night-time bike race on September 13. This will be the 13th edition of the event, which every year attracts participants from across the province. The novelty this time is the collaboration with the Andalucia Retinitis Pigmentosa Association. Half the money raised from inscriptions will go towards investigation into this genetic disorder of the eyes. The bike race will start at 10pm from the Plaza de San Francisco.

features 36 hours of five-aside football for youngsters staged over September 16, 17, 18 and 21. The knockout stages will be held in the Las Ventas and Francisco Torrecillas pavillions and the final in the Agua y Salud Municipal Sports Centre. There will also be 24 hours of
five-aside football on September 20 and 21 for all categories and a women’s competition on September 21 in the municipal sports centre. The night-time Albox town paddle tennis competition and the On the Street basketball tournament are further events the sports centre will host on September 20 and 21.
School upgrade CANTORIA’S Cerro Castillo infants and primary school is set to get some significant upgrades thanks to regional government-funded works. The Junta de Andalucia’s Education and Sport department is investing more than €180,000 in a series of improvements to the school’s infrastructure, including the toilets and the playground flooring. Works will be carried out on the kitchen building to adapt it to current health and safety regulations. There will also be a redistribution of space in the school with a view to better adapting it to the needs of the 172 pupils. The works will take three months to complete.
Car goes up in flames A CAR went up in flames on the road leading to the quarries in Macael. Spanish press reported smoke started coming out of the vehicle after it broke down. There were then several small explosions, after which the car was rapidly consumed by fire. There were no reports anyone was injured in the incident.

How hard can it be? MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man What a bunch of aerosols! It drives me nuts. I shake the container and hear plenty of swishing so I assume there is plenty in there, which there is. But after pressing the button nothing, except a little puff of air, comes out. I shake it again, I tilt the container – nothing. How hard can it be to make a product that actually works? This is not an unusual occurrence in the Senker household. There’s the sun creams all packed ready to go to the beach. We get there, find our pitch, move the beds this way and that whilst trying not to remove a layer of skin from my feet whilst walking round the bed. The ice box is in position under the shade. I sit down; get the sun cream - a spray bottle of course for a more even application. I shake the bottle as per instructions, point the nozzle at my legs, and pump three times ... nothing, zilch, nada. I check that I’ve twisted the thingy on the nozzle into the on position.

Yeah, everything is in the correct place. Now I’m staring at it, talking to it, trying to unscrew the - what I now find out is a top that doesn’t unscrew. I’ve paid about €20 for this stuff. I’m on the beach. I can’t take it back because it came from the UK with my daughter. So here are the choices. Go and buy another which I’m not doing. Or I force the top off and try and apply it that way. Of course I go for the brute force and ignorant approach as there is no way I’m buying another one. I finally manage to remove the top and as it comes off the bottle semi explodes showering me with more sun cream than would be needed to protect the two rows of sunbeds in front of me. I can tell my family is really concerned for me by the level of screeching laughter I can hear. Oh well, it can’t get any worse can it? Well not until we get home and Mrs S asks me to help her make a tuna and sweetcorn salad. Good idea - pass me the tuna please. It’s a ring pull can. I get it in the upright positon and pull, simplicity itself, and there is the ring pull sitting there on my finger instead of the tin. OK, back to the tin opener. Why, oh why does this happen to me? Or maybe to you too?

Pause for contentment IT seems that most of us, when asked why we chose to retire to Spain, give reasons that include the sunshine and the more relaxed way of life. Why then, I frequently wonder, do so many of us spend so much time complaining about the excessive heat and the interminable delays we experience whenever we have to deal with officialdom? Are these not two key reasons for our being here? Some of us, it seems, are never satisfied! So I was encouraged when recently reminded of words St Paul wrote to the Church in Philippi, saying ‘I’ve learned to be content with every circumstance of life’ - not bad for a man who’d been wrongly beaten and imprisoned, besides enduring all manner of other hardships! But how great is contentment the ability to accept and make the most of whatever life throws at us. And it’s a characteristic that all we who claim to be Christian should know, as Paul did. For an essential part of our faith is the acceptance that God is in control, so that, however difficult personal circumstances may seem, we can simply re-
lax and leave the worrying to Him. Sounds impossible? Well, the best-known of all Christian prayers, must be the one Jesus taught his disciples. I guess for many of us, it’s the only prayer we ever use, taking comfort in the sense of peace we gain from it. And that prayer contains the familiar words ‘Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.’ So yes, if we really mean it, then worrying becomes pointless as we leave that entirely to God, accepting that His will is necessarily best. The trouble is that, so often, rather like St Peter, when he stepped out of a boat to meet Jesus walking on the water, we become distracted by the circumstances around us and take our eyes off Jesus, so find ourselves sinking. So let’s take heart and look beyond the problems that surround us, to see Christ stretching out to us and giving us the power to rise above our circumstances, and so to relax, content in whatever situation we may face, knowing our Heavenly Father cares and controls.

BARRY DUKE FELLA approaches me in a bar, points at the fearsome demon’s head, all teeth and horns, that I have tattooed on my upper right arm and asks ‘did that hurt?’ ‘Sure,’ I replied, ‘but the pain was exquisite.’ I added: ‘But it was nothing compared to the agony of having a lizard inked on my right buttock.’ ‘Oooh, can I see it?’ was his response. As we were the only people in the place, and because the bartender, polishing glasses, had his back turned to us, I exposed it. There was a long silence before he exclaimed ‘that doesn’t look like a lizard, it’s more like Godzilla!’ The moment I got home, I rushed to a mirror to see what he was on about - and was horrified to discover that time and the loss of skin elasticity had transformed the cute wee reptile into a bloody great monster.

EXQUISITE PAIN: ... and even the Pope approves. Gone, alas, was the pert little butt that once won me the ‘Rear of the Year ’ title in a gay nightclub competition 52 years ago. My addiction to tattoos was triggered when my t h e n p a r t n e r, B r i a n , a n nounced on our 15th an-
niversary 31 years ago that his gift to me was a red rose. ‘So, where is it?’ I asked. ‘Oh,’ he replied, ‘we’ve yet to get it. Put on some clothes and I’ll take you there.’ ‘There’ turned out to be a tattoo parlour in Soho,
London. Brian introduced me to Simon, the needle man, and showed me the rose he’d chosen for my left upper arm. ‘You’ll always think of me when you look at it,’ he said. And I still do, 23 years after I lost him to cancer in 1996.
Filled with trepidation, I let Simon get to work, and with the pain came a feeling of exhilaration that I’d before experienced. This, I later discovered, was because needles release endorphins in the brain. ‘Endorphins are your body’s natural pain relievers’ Lisa Barretta, author of Conscious Ink: The Hidden Meaning of Tattoos, says. ‘These chemicals come directly from the brain, flooding your body. Endorphins are ‘feel-good’ chemicals that help us realise on some level that we are more resilient to pain than we think. It can become a deeply therapeutic process, for that very reason.’ She sure got that right. Soon I was back to Simon for more, and in the process discovered to my astonishment that his biggest client base comprised New York Catholic
priests. It started, he said, when one was on a visit to the UK, and was so pleased with the piece he’d had done that word spread like wildfire among his colleagues. ‘I’m guessing they all wanted religious tattoos,’ I surmised. Simon chortled ‘oh no, demons were mainly their thing.’ Seeing the look of surprise on my face, he confided that one an archbishop no less wanted his dangly bits coloured red and blue. Ouch! Then I learned that, in 2018, Pope Francis told aspiring young priests ‘not to be scared of tattoos’ and to use them as a talking-point to encourage dialogue. But what kind of dialogue can be encouraged by having brightly coloured testicles? Your guess, dear reader, is as good as mine.

ROAD TEST HONDA’S Jazz hatchback has been a very popular model in recent years, appealing to those who look for reliability and low running costs, but are not too concerned about sporty performance. However, the Jazz is now available with a more punchy 1.5-litre petrol engine which will widen its appeal to younger buyers who tend to prefer more zesty performance and sharper handling. The previous 1.3-litre 101 hp petrol engine is still available, but the new 1.5-litre unit packs 128 hp, and with a sixspeed manual gearbox (a CVT auto gearbox is an option) delivers a quick 0-100 kph time of 8.7 seconds and a top speed of 190 kph (118 mph). Average fuel economy is 17 kpl (47.9 mpg) and emissions are 133 g/km. With this larger engine in my upper-spec Sport Navi test model, there was not only an immediate performance boost but a whole new persona for the Jazz because it has also had an exterior make-over to

With the new engine option, forceful new styling and with Honda’s legendary reliability record, the potential market for the Jazz is greatly increased and this sporty version should prove popular.

Marquez equals Hailwood record By Dilip Kuner CHAMPIONSHIP leader Marc Marquez reaffirmed his position at the top of the MotoGP standings after another dominant weekend at the Czech Grand Prix in Brno. After equalling Mick Doohan’s 58 career pole positions on Saturday, his win makes him only the fourth rider in modern history to reach 50 top tier victories. The win also means he equals legendary British rider Mike Hailwood’s 76 wins across all classes. Fourth on the all time winner list, Marquez heads to round 11 in Austria with 210 points - 63 points clear of second placed Dovizioso. The race weekend was littered with scattered showers which played right into the Spaniard’s hands. Marquez is rightly known for being fault-
less in mixed conditions. The race start was delayed for 40 minutes after a shower deposited standing water onto the start/finish straight and into turn one. Marquez started from pole after a masterful display in qualifications saw him lead the field by 2.5 seconds. From the start, the factory Honda rider pulled away for a commanding lead and although close rival Andrea Dovioso (Ducatti) would stay with him for the opening stages of the race, he would later drop back as tyre wear came into play. The battle behind the leading two was a close one, with Alex Rins, Jack Miller and Valentino Rossi trading places throughout the early stages. Rossi would fall back leaving the two youngsters to battle for the final position on the podium. Miller managed
to overtake Rins on the penultimate lap for his second podium of the year. Britain’s Cal Crutchlow would cross the line in fifth ahead of Yamaha duo Valentino Rossi and Fabio Quartararo. Danilo Petrucci was eighth, with Taka Nakagami and Maverick Vinales finishing off the top 10. Marquez said: “I was really concentrated from the beginning as there were still some wet patches, especially at turn one. I knew I needed to keep my rhythm as the Yamaha riders were starting from behind and they were strong in warm up. “Then I saw that Dovi was behind me so I had to keep pushing
and pushing. I had a little warning on lap 10 because that is when I started to push more to try and open the gap. “Delaying the race was the best decision that could have been made because the
track was in a mixed condition and it could have been quite dangerous. A crazy weekend with the weather, but the
whole Repsol Honda Team were perfect and helped me a lot to achieve victory!”
